Recent advances of bioinspired functional materials with specific wettability: from nature and beyond nature

Lightweight, breathable and self-cleaning polypyrrole-modified multifunctional cotton fabric for flexible electromagnetic interference shielding

The thriving of wearable electronics and the emerging new requirements for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding have driven the innovation of EMI shielding materials towards lightweight, wearability and multifunctionality. Herein, the hierarchical polypyrrole nanotubes (PNTs)/PDMS structures are rationally constructed on the textile for obtaining multifunctional and flexible EMI shielding textiles by in-situ polymerization and surface coating. The modified cotton fabric possesses a conductivity of about 2715.8 S/m and an SET of 28.2 dB in the X band when the thickness is only 0.5 mm. After ultrasonic treatment, cyclic bending and washing, the conductivity and EMI shielding performance remain stable and exhibit long-term durability. Importantly, the textile's inherent lightweight, breathable and soft properties have been completely retained after modification. This work shows application potentiality in the field of EMI pollution protection and affords a novel path for the construction of multifunctionally wearable and durable EMI shielding materials.

Alumina - Stabilized SEI and CEI in Potassium Metal Batteries

Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanopowder is spin-coated onto both sides of commercial polypropene separator to create artificial solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and artificial cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) in potassium metal batteries (KMBs). This significantly enhances the stability, including of KMBs with Prussian Blue (PB) cathodes. For example, symmetric cells are stable after 1,000 cycles at 0.5 mA/cm2-0.5 mAh/cm2 and 3.0 mA/cm2-0.5 mAh/cm2. Alumina modified separators promote electrolyte wetting and increase ionic conductivity (0.59 vs. 0.2 mS/cm) and transference number (0.81 vs. 0.23). Cryo-stage focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) analysis of cycled modified anode demonstrates dense and planar electrodeposits, versus unmodified baseline consisting of metal filaments (dendrites) interspersed with pores and SEI. Alumina-modified CEI also suppresses elemental Fe crossover and reduces cathode cracking. Mesoscale modeling of metal - SEI interactions captures crucial role of intrinsic heterogeneities, illustrating how artificial SEI affects reaction current distribution, conductivity and morphological stability.

Wetting Behavior-Induced Interfacial transmission of Energy and Signal: Materials, Mechanisms, and Applications

Wetting behaviors can significantly affect the transport of energy and signal (E&S) through vapor, solid, and liquid interfaces, which has prompted increased interest in interfacial science and technology. E&S transmission can be achieved using electricity, light, and heat, which often accompany and interact with each other. Over the past decade, their distinctive transport phenomena during wetting processes have made significant contributions to various domains. However, few studies have analyzed the intricate relationship between wetting behavior and E&S transport. This review summarizes and discusses the mechanisms of electrical, light, and heat transmission at wetting interfaces to elucidate their respective scientific issues, technical characteristics, challenges, commonalities, and potential for technological convergence. The materials, structures, and devices involved in E&S transportation are also analyzed. Particularly, harnessing synergistic advantages in practical applications and constructing advanced, multifunctional, and highly efficient smart systems based on wetted interfaces is the aim to provide strategies.

Intelligent micro/nanorobots based on biotemplates

Intelligent micro/nanorobots based on natural materials as biotemplates are considered to be some of the most promising robots in the future in the microscopic field. Due to the advantages of biotemplates such as unique structure, abundant resources, environmental friendliness, easy removal, low price, easy access, and renewability, intelligent micro/nanorobots based on biotemplates can be endowed with both excellent biomaterial activity and unique structural morphology through biotemplates themselves and specific functions through artificial micro/nanotechnology. Thus, intelligent micro/nanorobots show excellent application potential in various fields from biomedical applications to environmental remediation. In this review, we introduce the advantages of using natural biological materials as biotemplates to build intelligent micro/nanorobots, and then, classify the micro/nanorobots according to different types of biotemplates, systematically detail their preparation strategies and summarize their application prospects. Finally, in order to further advance the development of intelligent micro/nanorobots, we discuss the current challenges and future prospects of biotemplates. Intelligent micro/nanorobots based on biotemplates are a perfect combination of natural biotemplates and micro/nanotechnology, which is an important trend for the future development of micro/nanorobots. We hope this review can provide useful references for developing more intelligent, efficient and safe micro/nanorobots in the future.

Bioinspired Slippery Surfaces for Liquid Manipulation from Tiny Droplet to Bulk Fluid

Slippery surfaces, which originate in nature with special wettability, have attracted considerable attention in both fundamental research and practical applications in a variety of fields due to their unique characteristics of superlow liquid friction and adhesion. Although research on bioinspired slippery surfaces is still in its infancy, it is a rapidly growing and enormously promising field. Herein, a systematic review of recent progress in bioinspired slippery surfaces, beginning with a brief introduction of several typical creatures with slippery property in nature, is presented. Subsequently,this review gives a detailed discussion on the basic concepts of the wetting, friction, and drag from micro- and macro-aspects and focuses on the underlying slippery mechanism. Next, the state-of-the-art developments in three categories of slippery surfaces of air-trapped, liquid-infused, and liquid-like slippery surfaces, including materials, design principles, and preparation methods, are summarized and the emerging applications are highlighted. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of various slippery surfaces are addressed.

Recognition of sounds by ensembles of proteinoids

Proteinoids are artificial polymers that imitate certain characteristics of natural proteins, including self-organization, catalytic activity, and responsiveness to external stimuli. This paper examines the acoustic response properties of proteinoids microspheres when exposed to auditory stimuli. We convert sounds of English alphabet into waveforms of electrical potential, feed the waveforms into proteinoid solutions and record electrical responses of the proteinoids. We also undertake a detailed comparison of proteinoids' electrical responses (frequencies, periods, and amplitudes) with original input signals. We found that responses of proteinoids are less regular, lower dominant frequency, wider distribution of proteinoids and less skewed distribution of amplitudes compared with input signals. We found that resonant acoustic excitation of proteinoids generates unique electrical impulse patterns dependent on sound frequency and amplitude. The finding will be used in further designs of organic electronic devices, based on ensembles of proteinoids, for sound processing and speech recognition. Our findings provide the first quantitative investigation into the potential of thermal proteinoid microspheres for bio-inspired sound processing and recognition applications. Using controlled speaker excitation on proteinoid samples, we create reliable markers of productive acoustic response capacities, paving the way for future advancement.

A laser-processed micro/nanostructures surface and its photothermal de-icing and self-cleaning performance

Micro/nanostructures have garnered significant attention and widespread applications in areas such as photocatalysis, coated fabrics, microchips, and sensors. However, high-resolution and multifunctional micro/nanostructures fabrication remains a great challenge. In this work, a novel self-assembly-femtosecond laser processing for the regular micro squares and nano bumps surface on steel substrates is proposed, and a great potential in the field of anti-icing/de-icing and self-cleaning is demonstrated. The surface tension gradient-driven liquid-air self-assembly provides a silica microsphere monolayer, while the post-femtosecond laser process can give precise micro/nano decoration. We systematically explore the impact of laser repetition frequency, scanning speed, and laser incident power on the size and shape of micro/nano decorations that have been studied. The different performances of self-cleaning effects, ice adhesion, and the photothermal de-icing capability due to the change in surface wettability have been demonstrated. This research shows a new pathway for the creation of smart micro/nanostructures surface which possess stable super hydrophilic and highly adhesive superhydrophobic properties, as well as high abrasion resistance. The discovery achieves a suitable blend of multiple functions on the surface of a single material, which can be applied to various surface engineering fields.

Bioinspired Hydrophobicity for Enhancing Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (CO2 R) is a promising pathway for converting greenhouse gasses into valuable fuels and chemicals using intermittent renewable energy. Enormous efforts have been invested in developing and designing CO2 R electrocatalysts suitable for industrial applications at accelerated reaction rates. The microenvironment, specifically the local CO2 concentration (local [CO2 ]) as well as the water and ion transport at the CO2 -electrolyte-catalyst interface, also significantly impacts the current density, Faradaic efficiency (FE), and operation stability. In nature, hydrophobic surfaces of aquatic arachnids trap appreciable amounts of gases due to the "plastron effect", which could inspire the reliable design of CO2 R catalysts and devices to enrich gaseous CO2 . In this review, starting from the wettability modulation, we summarize CO2 enrichment strategies to enhance CO2 R. To begin, superwettability systems in nature and their inspiration for concentrating CO2 in CO2 R are described and discussed. Moreover, other CO2 enrichment strategies, compatible with the hydrophobicity modulation, are explored from the perspectives of catalysts, electrolytes, and electrolyzers, respectively. Finally, a perspective on the future development of CO2 enrichment strategies is provided. We envision that this review could provide new guidance for further developments of CO2 R toward practical applications.

CO2-philicity to CO2-phobicity Transition on Smooth and Stochastic Rough Cu-like Substrate Surfaces

CO2 on metal substrates is essential to CO2 liquefaction and transportation of CO2, yet the manipulation of the wettability of the CO2 and the elucidation of its underlying mechanism have not been fully achieved. Here, using molecular dynamics simulations, we report CO2 wetting characteristics on both smooth and stochastic rough Cu-like substrate surfaces. The results indicate that the apparent contact angle (CA) of the CO2 droplet on the smooth surface decreases from 180° to 0° as the CO2-solid characteristic interaction energy increases from 0.002 to 0.016 eV. In addition, the CAs become greater with increasing the density of surface asperities, regardless of the intrinsic surface wettability. This is attributed to the capillary drying-out of liquid CO2 molecules in gaps between surface asperities at the three-phase contact line of the droplet, which is usually overlooked in previous theoretical studies. Notably, the intrinsically CO2-philic surface transforms to the CO2-phobic due to an increase in the density of surface rugosity. Moreover, we verify the range of applicability of the CA prediction models concerning the nanoscale asperities. This work is beneficial for fully understanding the influence of nanoscale surface topography on CO2 wettability and shedding light on the design of functionalized and patterned surfaces to manipulate CO2 wettability.

From Bioinspired Topographies toward Non-Wettable Neural Implants

The present study investigates different design strategies to produce non-wettable micropatterned surfaces. In addition to the classical method of measuring the contact angle, the non-wettability is also discussed by means of the immersion test. Inspired by non-wettable structures found in nature, the effects of features such as reentrant cavities, micropillars, and overhanging layers are studied. We show that a densely populated array of small diameter cavities exhibits superior non-wettability, with 65% of the cavities remaining intact after 24 h of full immersion in water. In addition, it is suggested that the wetting transition time is influenced by the length of the overhanging layer as well as by the number of columns within the cavity. Our findings indicate a non-wetting performance that is three times longer than previously reported in the literature for a small, densely populated design with cavities as small as 10 μm in diameter. Such properties are particularly beneficial for neural implants as they may reduce the interface between the body fluid and the solid state, thereby minimiing the inflammatory response following implantation injury. In order to assess the effectiveness of this approach in reducing the immune response induced by neural implants, further in vitro and in vivo studies will be essential.

Research progress of bionic fog collection surfaces based on special structures from natural organisms

With the increasing shortage of water resources, people are seeking more innovative ways to collect fog to meet the growing need for production and the demand for livelihood. It has been proven that fog collection is efficient for collecting water in dry but foggy areas. As a hot research topic in recent years, bionic surfaces with fog collection functions have attracted widespread attention in practical applications and basic research. By studying natural organisms and bionic surfaces, more avenues are provided for the development of fog collection devices. Firstly, starting from biological prototypes, this article explored the structural characteristics and fog collection mechanisms of natural organisms such as spider silk, desert beetles, cactus, Nepenthes and other animals and plants (Sarracenia, shorebird and wheat awn), revealing the fog collection mechanism of the natural organisms based on microstructures. Secondly, based on the theory of interfacial tension, we would delve into the fog collection function's theoretical basis and wetting model, expounding the fog collection mechanism from a theoretical perspective. Thirdly, a detailed introduction was given to prepare bionic surfaces and recently explore fog collection devices. For bionic surfaces of a single biological prototype, the fog collection efficiency is about 2000-4000 mg cm-2 h-1. For bionic surfaces of multiple biological prototypes, the fog collection efficiency reaches 7000 mg cm-2 h-1. Finally, a critical analysis was conducted on the current challenges and future developments, aiming to promote the next generation of fog collection devices from a scientific perspective from research to practical applications.

A review of self-cleaning photocatalytic surface: Effect of surface characteristics on photocatalytic activity for NO

Self-cleaning surface has attracted much attention in the field of photocatalytic degradation of NO due to its dirt pickup resistance and self-cleaning effect under the action of rainwater. In this review, the factors affecting NO degradation efficiency were analyzed in terms of photocatalyst characteristics and environmental conditions combined with the photocatalytic degradation mechanism. The feasibility of photocatalytic degradation of NO on superhydrophilic, superhydrophobic and superamphiphobic surfaces was discussed. Furthermore, the effect of special surface characteristics of self-cleaning on photocatalytic NO was highlighted and the improvement of the long-term effect using three self-cleaning surfaces on photocatalytic NO was evaluated and summarized. Finally, the conclusion and outlook were proposed related to the self-cleaning surface for photocatalytic degradation of NO. In future research, the comprehensive effects of the characteristics of photocatalytic materials, self-cleaning characteristics and environmental factors on the photocatalytic degradation of NO and the actual application effects of such self-cleaning photocatalytic surfaces should be further clarified in combination with the engineering. It is believed that this review can provide some theoretical basis and support for the development of self-cleaning surfaces in the field of photocatalytic degradation of NO.

A comprehensive review of lignocellulosic biomass derived materials for water/oil separation

With rapid socioeconomic development, oil is widely used in all aspects of modern society. However, the extraction, transport, and processing of oil inevitably lead to the production of large quantities of oily wastewater. Traditional oil/water separation strategies are often inefficient, costly, and cumbersome to operate. Therefore, new green, low-cost, and high-efficiency materials must be developed for oil/water separation. As widely sourced and renewable natural biocomposites, wood-based materials have become a hot field recently. This review will focus on the application of several wood-based materials in oil/water separation. The state of research on wood sponges, cotton fibers, cellulose aerogels, cellulose membranes, and some other wood-based materials for oil/water separation over the last few years and provide an outlook on their future development are summarized and investigated. It is expected to provide some direction for future research on the use of wood-based materials in oil/water separation.

Review on Hydrophobic Thin Films Prepared Using Magnetron Sputtering Deposition

Hydrophobic thin films have gained significant attention due to their broad applications in self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, anti-icing, medicine, oil-water separation, and other fields. The target hydrophobic materials can be deposited onto various surfaces thanks to the scalable and highly reproducible nature of magnetron sputtering, which is comprehensively overviewed in this review. While alternative preparation methods have been extensively analyzed, a systematic understanding of hydrophobic thin films fabricated using magnetron sputtering deposition is still absent. After outlining the fundamental mechanism of hydrophobicity, this review briefly summarizes three types of sputtering-deposited thin films that originate from oxides, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and diamond-like carbon (DLC), respectively, primarily focusing on the recent advances in their preparation, characteristics, and applications. Finally, the future applications, current challenges, and development of hydrophobic thin films are discussed, and a brief perspective on future research directions is provided.

Underwater Superoleophobic and Underoil Superhydrophilic Copper Benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (HKUST-1) Mesh for Self-Cleaning and On-Demand Emulsion Separation

Surfaces with underoil superhydrophilic (UOSHL) and underwater superoleophobic (UWOHB) have great potential for on-demand emulsion separation. However, the fabrication of underoil superhydrophilic based on wetting thermodynamic principles is quite challenging. Several previous studies have shown that some sarcocarps are able to spontaneously absorb water to moisturize themselves and have a unique UOSHL ability. By mimicking this unique ability of the sarcocarp, an outstanding UWOHB and UOSHL membrane was prepared. We choose 2300 mesh stainless steel mesh (SSM) as the substrate, then grow Cu and Cu(OH)₂ on SSM by a simple electrochemical method, and finally grow HKUST-1 crystals via a fast in situ growth method. The whole preparation process is simple, low cost, and does not require complex and long-term hydrothermal reactions. By growing HKUST-1 crystals, the prepared surface successfully achieved the required UOSHL and UWOHB properties. When the water droplets come into contact with the membrane under n-hexane, it will diffuse and can completely spread out in 2 s. The as-prepared membrane exhibits outstanding anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties for rapeseed oil and crude oil with high viscosity underwater due to the special wetting. By prewetting the surface with an appropriate amount of the dispersion medium, it can rapidly and efficiently on-demand separate different emulsions. The separation efficiencies of water-in-oil emulsions and oil-in-water emulsions are above 99.00 and 97.00%. With their outstanding performance in self-cleaning, on-demand emulsion separation, low cost, and fast preparation, the as-prepared UOSHL and UWOHB HKUST-1 meshes show excellent potential for treating oily wastewater in practical applications.

Wetting hysteresis induces effective unidirectional water transport through a fluctuating nanochannel

We propose a water pump that actively transports water molecules through nanochannels. Spatially asymmetric noise fluctuations imposed on the channel radius cause unidirectional water flow without osmotic pressure, which can be attributed to hysteresis in the cyclic transition between the wetting/drying states. We show that the water transport depends on fluctuations, such as white, Brownian, and pink noises. Because of the high-frequency components in white noise, fast switching of open and closed states inhibits channel wetting. Conversely, pink and Brownian noises generate high-pass filtered net flow. Brownian fluctuation leads to a faster water transport rate, whereas pink noise has a higher capability to overcome pressure differences in the opposite direction. A trade-off relationship exists between the resonant frequency of the fluctuation and the flow amplification. The proposed pump can be considered as an analogy for the reversed Carnot cycle, which is the upper limit of the energy conversion efficiency.

Cleanroom-Free Fabrication of Microneedles for Multimodal Drug Delivery

Microneedles have recently emerged as a powerful tool for minimally invasive drug delivery and body fluid sampling. To date, high-resolution fabrication of microneedle arrays (MNAs) is mostly achieved by the utilization of sophisticated facilities and expertise. Particularly, hollow microneedles have usually been manufactured in cleanrooms out of silicon, resin, or metallic materials. Such strategies do not support the fabrication of microneedles from biocompatible/biodegradable materials and limit the capability of multimodal drug delivery for the controlled release of different therapeutics through a combination of injection and sustained diffusion. This study implements low-cost 3D printers to fabricate relatively large needle arrays, followed by repeatable shrink-molding of hydrogels to form high-resolution molds for solid and hollow MNAs with controllable sizes. The developed strategy further enables modulating surface topography of MNAs to tailor their surface area and instantaneous wettability for controllable drug delivery and body fluid sampling. Hybrid gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) MNAs are fabricated using the developed strategy that can easily penetrate the skin and enable multimodal drug delivery. The proposed method holds promise for affordable, controllable, and scalable fabrication of MNAs by researchers and clinicians for controlled spatiotemporal administration of therapeutics and sample collection.

A Review of Smart Superwetting Surfaces Based on Shape-Memory Micro/Nanostructures

Bioinspired smart superwetting surfaces with special wettability have aroused great attention from fundamental research to technological applications including self-cleaning, oil-water separation, anti-icing/corrosion/fogging, drag reduction, cell engineering, liquid manipulation, and so on. However, most of the reported smart superwetting surfaces switch their wettability by reversibly changing surface chemistry rather than surface microstructure. Compared with surface chemistry, the regulation of surface microstructure is more difficult and can bring novel functions to the surfaces. As a kind of stimulus-responsive material, shape-memory polymer (SMP) has become an excellent candidate for preparing smart superwetting surfaces owing to its unique shape transformation property. This review systematically summarizes the recent progress of smart superwetting SMP surfaces including fabrication methods, smart superwetting phenomena, and related application fields. The smart superwettabilities, such as superhydrophobicity/superomniphobicity with tunable adhesion, reversible switching between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity, switchable isotropic/anisotropic wetting, slippery surface with tunable wettability, and underwater superaerophobicity/superoleophobicity with tunable adhesion, can be obtained on SMP micro/nanostructures by regulating the surface morphology. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of smart superwetting SMP surfaces are discussed.

Bioinspired nanoflakes with antifouling and mechano-bactericidal capacity

Pathogenic bacteria contamination ubiquitously occurs on high-contact surfaces in hospitals and has long been a threat to public health, inducing severe nosocomial infections that cause multiple organ dysfunction and increased hospital mortality. Recently, nanostructured surfaces with mechano-bactericidal properties have shown potential for modifying material surfaces to fight against the spread of pathogenic microorganisms without the risk of triggering antibacterial resistance. Nevertheless, these surfaces are readily contaminated by bacterial attachment or inanimate pollutants like solid dust or common fluids, which has greatly weakened their antibacterial capabilities. In this work, we discovered that the nonwetting Amorpha fruticosa leaf surfaces are equipped with mechano-bactericidal capacity by means of their randomly-arranged nanoflakes. Inspired by this discovery, we reported an artificial superhydrophobic surface with similar nanofeatures and superior antibacterial abilities. Compared to conventional bactericidal surfaces, this bioinspired antibacterial surface was synergistically accompanied by antifouling performances, which significantly prevent either initial bacterial attachment or inanimate pollutants like dust covering and fluid contaminants. Overall, the bioinspired antifouling nanoflakes surface holds promise as the design of next-generation high-touch surface modification that effectively reduces the transmission of nosocomial infections.

Bioinspired All-Fibrous Directional Moisture-Wicking Electronic Skins for Biomechanical Energy Harvesting and All-Range Health Sensing

Bioinspired directional moisture-wicking electronic skin (DMWES) was successfully realized by surface energy gradient and push–pull effect via the design of distinct hydrophobic-hydrophilic difference. The DMWES membrane showed excellent comprehensive pressure sensing performance with high sensitivity and good single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator performance The superior pressure sensing and triboelectric performance enabled the DMWES for all-range healthcare sensing, including accurate pulse monitoring, voice recognition, and gait recognition.

Abstract

Electronic skins can monitor minute physiological signal variations in the human skins and represent the body’s state, showing an emerging trend for alternative medical diagnostics and human–machine interfaces. In this study, we designed a bioinspired directional moisture-wicking electronic skin (DMWES) based on the construction of heterogeneous fibrous membranes and the conductive MXene/CNTs electrospraying layer. Unidirectional moisture transfer was successfully realized by surface energy gradient and push–pull effect via the design of distinct hydrophobic-hydrophilic difference, which can spontaneously absorb sweat from the skin. The DMWES membrane showed excellent comprehensive pressure sensing performance, high sensitivity (maximum sensitivity of 548.09 kPa−1), wide linear range, rapid response and recovery time. In addition, the single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator based on the DMWES can deliver a high areal power density of 21.6 µW m−2 and good cycling stability in high pressure energy harvesting. Moreover, the superior pressure sensing and triboelectric performance enabled the DMWES for all-range healthcare sensing, including accurate pulse monitoring, voice recognition, and gait recognition. This work will help to boost the development of the next-generation breathable electronic skins in the applications of AI, human–machine interaction, and soft robots.

Tribological Behavior of Bioinspired Surfaces

Energy losses due to various tribological phenomena pose a significant challenge to sustainable development. These energy losses also contribute toward increased emissions of greenhouse gases. Various attempts have been made to reduce energy consumption through the use of various surface engineering solutions. The bioinspired surfaces can provide a sustainable solution to address these tribological challenges by minimizing friction and wear. The current study majorly focuses on the recent advancements in the tribological behavior of bioinspired surfaces and bio-inspired materials. The miniaturization of technological devices has increased the need to understand micro- and nano-scale tribological behavior, which could significantly reduce energy wastage and material degradation. Integrating advanced research methods is crucial in developing new aspects of structures and characteristics of biological materials. Depending upon the interaction of the species with the surrounding, the present study is divided into segments depicting the tribological behavior of the biological surfaces inspired by animals and plants. The mimicking of bio-inspired surfaces resulted in significant noise, friction, and drag reduction, promoting the development of anti-wear and anti-adhesion surfaces. Along with the reduction in friction through the bioinspired surface, a few studies providing evidence for the enhancement in the frictional properties were also depicted.

Fish scale inspired structures-a review of materials, manufacturing and models

Fish scale inspired materials and structures can provide advanced mechanical properties and functionalities. These materials, inspired by fish scales, take the form of either composite materials or multi-material discrete exoskeleton type structures. Over the last decade they have been under intense scrutiny for generating tailorable and tunable stiffness, penetration and fracture resistance, buckling prevention, nonlinear damping, hydrodynamic and camouflaging functions. Such programmable behavior emerges from leveraging their unique morphology and structure-property relationships. Several advanced tools for characterization, manufacturing, modeling and computation have been employed to understand and discover their behavior. With the rapid proliferation of additive manufacturing techniques and advances in modeling and computational methods, this field is seeing renewed efforts to realize even more ambitious designs. In this paper we present a review and recapitulation of the state-of-the art of fish scale inspired materials.

Bifunctional Amphiphilic Nanospikes with Antifogging and Antibiofouling Properties

Over the past few decades, extensive research efforts have been devoted to developing surfaces with unique functionalities, such as controlled wettability, antibiofouling, antifogging, and anti-icing behavior, for applications in a wide range of fields, including biomedical devices, optical instruments, microfluidics, and energy conservation and harvesting. However, many of the previously reported approaches have limitations with regard to eco-friendliness, multifunctionality, long-term stability and efficacy, and cost effectiveness. Herein, we propose a scalable bifunctional surface that simultaneously exhibits excellent antifogging and antibiofouling properties based on the synergistic integration of an eco-friendly and bio-friendly polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel, oleamide (OA), and nanoscale architectures in a single flexible platform. We demonstrate that the PEG-OA-nanostructure hybrid exhibits excellent antifogging performance owing to its enhanced water absorption and spreading properties. We further show that the triple hybrid exhibits notable biofilm resistance without the use of toxic biocides or chemicals by integrating the "fouling-resistant" mechanism of the PEG hydrogel, the "fouling-release" mechanism of OA, and the "foulant-killing" mechanism of the nanostructures.

Anisotropic Wettability of Bioinspired Surface Characterized by Friction Force

Bioinspired surfaces with special wettabilities attract increasing attention due to their extensive applications in many fields. However, the characterizations of surface wettability by contact angle (CA) and sliding angle (SA) have clear drawbacks. Here, by using an array of triangular micropillars (ATM) prepared by soft lithography, the merits of measuring the friction force of a water droplet on ATM over measurements of CA and SA in characterizing the surface wettability are demonstrated. The CA and SA measurements show ignorable differences in the wettabilities of ATM in opposite directions (1.13%) and that with different periodic parameters under the elongation ranging from 0 to 70%. In contrast, the friction measurement reveals a difference of > 10% in opposite directions. Moreover, the friction force shows a strong dependence on the periodic parameters which is regulated by mechanical stretching. Increasing the elongation from 0 to 50% increases the static and kinetic friction force up to 23.0% and 22.9%, respectively. Moreover, the stick-slip pattern during kinetic friction can reveal the periodic features of the measured surface. The friction force measurement is a sensitive technique that could find applications in the characterization of surface wettabilities.

Biomimetic superhydrophobic metal/nonmetal surface manufactured by etching methods: A mini review

As an emerging fringe science, bionics integrates the understanding of nature, imitation of nature, and surpassing nature in one aspect, and it organically combines the synergistic complementarity of function and structure-function integrated materials which is of great scientific interest. By imitating the microstructure of a natural biological surface, the bionic superhydrophobic surface prepared by human beings has the properties of self-cleaning, anti-icing, water collection, anti-corrosion and oil-water separation, and the preparation research methods are increasing. The preparation methods of superhydrophobic surface include vapor deposition, etching modification, sol-gel, template, electrostatic spinning, and electrostatic spraying, which can be applied to fields such as medical care, military industry, ship industry, and textile. The etching modification method can directly modify the substrate, so there is no need to worry about the adhesion between the coating and the substrate. The most obvious advantage of this method is that the obtained superhydrophobic surface is integrated with the substrate and has good stability and corrosion resistance. In this article, the different preparation methods of bionic superhydrophobic materials were summarized, especially the etching modification methods, we discussed the detailed classification, advantages, and disadvantages of these methods, and the future development direction of the field was prospected.

Fabrication of robust superhydrophobic magnetic multifunctional coatings and liquid marbles

To obtain durable and multi-function superhydrophobic surfaces, we reported a facial method to prepare a multifunctional suspension (γ-Fe₂O₃@SiO₂@PDMS suspension) named as FSP suspension, in which γ-Fe₂O₃ was coated by the silica shell and PDMS was used as the outer layer. Superhydrophobic magnetic polyurethane (SMPU) sponge was prepared by immersing the polyurethane (PU) sponge into the FSP suspension, exhibiting the superior ability to absorb oil. In addition, it could also move directionally by the attraction of magnets and absorb the oil along the fixed path. The heated superhydrophobic magnetic stainless steel (H-SMSS) mesh was acquired by spraying FSP suspension onto the stainless steel mesh and then heating at 400 °C, which demonstrated superior superhydrophobicity and resistance to abrasion and chemical corrosion. Besides, the H-SMSS mesh displayed excellent flux and efficiency to separate the oil/water mixture. Rolling droplets on FSP particles, the superhydrophobic magnetic liquid marbles (SMLMs) were fabricated, in which liquids with different volumes were encapsulated and transported directionally. Further, it was convenient to inject liquid into the SMLM and withdraw liquid from it. Thus, the prepared FSP suspension has promising applications in constructing large-area, robust, and multifunctional surfaces and microreactors.

Designing Photothermal Superhydrophobic PET Fabrics via In Situ Polymerization and 1,4-Conjugation Addition Reaction

This study demonstrates a simple and fast method to integrate superhydrophobicity, UV protection, and photothermal effect onto PET fabrics. The surface of PET fabric forms a hierarchical rough structure through in situ oxidative polymerization of the pyrrole (Py). The 1,4-conjugate addition reaction between pentaerythritol tetraacrylate, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and octadecyl acrylate not only endows the PET fabric with superhydrophobicity but also forms a cross-linked network structure which improves the stability of multifunctional coatings on the surface of the PET fabric. In addition, the wettability of the prepared PET fabric is investigated by adjusting the Py monomer and octadecyl acrylate concentration. The results reveal that the prepared PET fabrics exhibit obviously superhydrophobic behavior with a contact angle of 155.8°. The surface temperature of the superhydrophobic PPy/PET fabric can rise to 91 °C under a simulated sunlight which is much higher than the pristine PET fabric, while reaching basically the same steady-state in five heating/cooling cycles. The prepared PET fabric also possesses excellent self-cleaning, UV shielding, and solar light absorption performances. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic PET fabric exhibited excellent stability against 180 °C high temperature, strong UV radiation, different pH solutions and organic solvent erosion, 8 h washing tests, and 25 sandpaper abrasion cycles. These findings provide a path for the future development of multifunctional fabrics using fluorine-free environmentally friendly materials.

3D Printed Parahydrophobic Surfaces as Multireaction Platforms

Parahydrophobic surfaces (PHSs) composed of arrays of cubic μ-pillars with a double scale of roughness and variable wettability were systematically obtained in one step and a widely accessible stereolithographic Formlabs 3D printer. The wettability control was achieved by combining the geometrical parameters (H = height and P = pitch) and the surface modification with fluoroalkyl silane compounds. Homogeneous distribution of F and Si atoms onto the pillars was observed by XPS and SEM-EDAX. A nano-roughness on the heads of the pillars was achieved without any post-treatment. The smallest P values lead to surfaces with static contact angles (CAs) >150° regardless of the H utilized. Interestingly, the relationship 0.6 ≤ H/P ≤ 2.6 obtained here was in good agreement with the H/P values reported for nano- and submicron pillars. Furthermore, experimental CAs, advancing and receding CAs, were consistent with the theoretical prediction from the Cassie-Baxter model. Structures covered with perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane with high H and short P lead to PHSs. Conversely, structures covered with perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane exhibited a superhydrophobic behavior. Finally, several aqueous reactions, such as precipitation, coordination complex, and nanoparticle synthesis, were carried out by placing the reactive agents as microdroplets on the parahydrophobic pillars, demonstrating the potential application as chemical multi-reaction array platforms for a large variety of relevant fields in microdroplet manipulation, microfluidics systems, and health monitoring, among others.

Adhesion behaviors of water droplets on bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces

The adhesion behaviors of droplets on surfaces are attracting increasing attention due to their various applications. Many bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces with different adhesion states have been constructed in order to mimic the functions of natural surfaces such as a lotus leaf, a rose petal, butterfly wings, etc. In this review, we first present a brief introduction to the fundamental theories of the adhesion behaviors of droplets on various surfaces, including low adhesion, high adhesion and anisotropic adhesion states. Then, different techniques to characterize droplet adhesion on these surfaces, including the rotating disk technique, the atomic force microscope cantilever technique, and capillary sensor-based techniques, are described. Wetting behaviors, and the switching between different adhesion states on bioinspired surfaces, are also summarized and discussed. Subsequently, the diverse applications of bioinspired surfaces, including water collection, liquid transport, drag reduction, and oil/water separation, are discussed. Finally, the challenges of using liquid adhesion behaviors on various surfaces, and future applications of these surfaces, are discussed.

Role of chemistry in bio-inspired liquid wettability

Chemistry and topography are the two distinct available tools for customizing different bio-inspired liquid wettability including superhydrophobicity, superamphiphobicity, underwater superoleophobicity, underwater superoleophilicity, and liquid infused slippery property. In nature, various living species possessing super and special liquid wettability inherently comprises of distinctly patterned surface topography decorated with low/high surface energy. Inspired from the topographically diverse natural species, the variation in surface topography has been the dominant approach for constructing bio-inspired antiwetting interfaces. However, recently, the modulation of chemistry has emerged as a facile route for the controlled tailoring of a wide range of bio-inspired liquid wettability. This review article aims to summarize the various reports published over the years that has elaborated the distinctive importance of both chemistry and topography in imparting and modulating various bio-inspired wettability. Moreover, this article outlines some obvious advantages of chemical modulation approach over topographical variation. For example, the strategic use of the chemical approach has allowed the facile, simultaneous, and independent tailoring of both liquid wettability and other relevant physical properties. We have also discussed the design of different antiwetting patterned and stimuli-responsive interfaces following the strategic and precise alteration of chemistry for various prospective applications.

Rational Design of High-Performance Keratin-Based Hemostatic Agents

Keratins are considered ideal candidates as hemostatic agents, but the development lags far behind their potentials due to the poorly understood hemostatic mechanism and structure-function relations, owing to the composition complexity in protein extracts. Here, it is shown that by using a recombinant synthesis approach, individual types of keratins can be expressed and used for mechanism investigation and further high-performance keratin hemostatic agent design. In the comparative evaluation of full-length, rod-domain, and helical segment keratins, the α-helical contents in the sequences are identified to be directly proportional to keratins' hemostatic activities, and Tyr, Phe, and Gln residues at the N-termini of α-helices in keratins are crucial in fibrinopeptide release and fibrin polymerization. A feasible route to significantly enhance the hemostatic efficiency of helical keratins by mutating Cys to Ser in the sequences for enhanced water wettability through soluble expression is then further presented. These results provide a rational strategy to design high-efficiency keratin hemostatic agents with superior performance over clinically used gelatin sponge in multiple animal models.

High-Performance Heterogeneous Thermocatalysis Caused by Catalyst Wettability Regulation

Catalyst wettability regulation has emerged as an attractive approach for high catalytic performance for the past few years. By introducing appropriate wettability, the molecule diffusion of reactants and products can be enhanced, leading to high activity. Besides this, undesired molecules are isolated for high selectivity of target products and long-term stability of catalyst. Herein, we summarize wettability-induced high-performance heterogeneous thermocatalysis in recent years, including hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity, hybrid hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity, amphiphilicity, and superaerophilicity. Relevant reactions are further classified and described according to the reason for the performance improvement. It should be pointed out that studies of utilizing superaerophilicity to improve heterogeneous thermocatalytic performance have been included for the first time, so this is a comparatively comprehensive review in this field as yet.

Sunlight Recovering the Superhydrophobicity of a Femtosecond Laser-Structured Shape-Memory Polymer

Superhydrophobic surfaces have aroused increasing attentions in the fields of self-cleaning, anti-fouling, heat transfer, etc. However, one of the major problems of the artificial superhydrophobic surface in practical applications is the poor durability. Inspired by the self-healing property of nature organism, we developed a sunlight-driven recoverable superhydrophobic surface by femtosecond laser constructing micropillar array on the surface of the photo-responsive shape-memory polymer (SMP). The photo-responsive SMP composite was prepared by adding reduced graphene oxide (RGO) into thermal-responsive SMP matrix. Due to the excellent sunlight-to-heat transformation property of RGO, the temperature of the as-fabricated RGO-SMP composite could be rapidly increased above the shape transformation temperature of the RGO-SMP under one sunlight irradiation. Once the micropillar array of the RGO-SMP composite was deformed by pressing or stretching treatments, the surface would lose superhydrophobicity. Upon sunlight irradiation, the surface morphology and the wettability of the RGO-SMP micropillars could completely recover to the original states. Meanwhile, this reversible morphology and wettability transformation process could be repeated multiple times. We envision that such a sunlight-recoverable superhydrophobic surface will have great applications in the future.

Robust multifunctional fluorine-free superhydrophobic fabrics for high-efficiency oil-water separation with ultrahigh flux

The limited robustness and complex preparation process greatly hinder the large-scale use of superhydrophobic surfaces in real life. In this work, we adopt a simple method to prepare robust fluorine-free superhydrophobic cotton fabrics by a facile dip-coating method based on silica microparticles and titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Microparticles and nanoparticles are used to build a suitable rough hierarchical structure, while strong bonds are formed between fabric and particles by a silane coupling agent. The cross-linking reaction between the isocyanate group of trimers of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and the hydroxyl group of each component in the condensation reaction further increases the bonding between the coating and the cotton fabric. In addition, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is used as a low-surface-energy material to modify the fabric surface. The resulting coating shows excellent superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle of 161.7°. Meanwhile, the prepared superhydrophobic fabric exhibits excellent durability and stability after sandpaper wearing, washing, and UV radiation, as well as treatment with various organic solutions, boiling water and different pH solutions. Moreover, the superhydrophobic fabric displays excellent UV protection performance and high oil-water separation efficiency (>99% after 30 cycles) with ultrahigh flux up to 20 850 L m^-2 h^-1.

Bibliometric survey and network analysis of biomimetics and nature inspiration in engineering science

The field encompassing biomimetics, bioinspiration and nature inspiration in engineering science is growing steadily, pushed by exogenous factors like the search for potentially sustainable engineering solutions that might already exist in nature. With the help of information provided by a bibliometric database and further processed with a dynamic network and semantic analysis tool, we provide insight at two scales into the corpus of nature-inspired engineering field and its dynamics. At the macroscale, the Web of Science^®(WoS) categories, countries and institutions are ranked and ordered by thematic clusters and country networks, highlighting the leading countries and institutions and how they focus on specific topics. Such an insight provides an overview at the macroscale that can be valuable to orient scientific strategy at the country level. At the mesoscale, where science is incarnated by collaborative networks of authors and institutions that run across countries, we identify six semantic clusters and subclusters within them, and their dynamics. We also pinpoint leading academic collaborative networks and their activity in relation to the six semantic clusters. Trends and prospective are also discussed. Typically, one observes that the field is becoming mature since, starting by imitating nature, it proceeded with mimicking more complex natural structures and functions and now it investigates ways used in nature in response to changes in the environment and implements them in innovative and adaptive artefacts. The sophistication of devices, methods and tools has been increasing over the years as well as their functionalities and adaptability, whereas the size of devices has decreased at the same time.

Cost-Effective Fabrication of Micro-Nanostructured Superhydrophobic Polyethylene/Graphene Foam with Self-Floating, Optical Trapping, Acid-/Alkali Resistance for Efficient Photothermal Deicing and Interfacial Evaporation

Solar evaporation is one of the most attractive and sustainable approaches to address worldwide freshwater scarcity. Unfortunately, it is still a crucial challenge that needs to be confronted when the solar evaporator faces harsh application environments. Herein, a promising polymer molding method that combines melt blending and compression molding, namely micro extrusion compression molding, is proposed for the cost-effective fabrication of lightweight polyethylene/graphene nanosheets (PE/GNs) foam with interconnected vapor escape channels and surface micro-nanostructures. A contact angle of 155 ± 2°, a rolling angle of 5 ± 1° and reflectance of ≈1.6% in the wavelength range of 300-2500 nm appears on the micro-nanostructured PE/GNs foam surface. More interestingly, the micro-nanostructured PE/GNs foam surface can maintain a robust superhydrophobic state under dynamic impacting, high temperature and acid-/alkali solutions. These results mean that the micro-nanostructured PE/GNs foam surface possesses self-cleaning, anti-icing and photothermal deicing properties at the same time. Importantly, the foam exhibits an evaporation rate of 1.83 kg m^-2 h^-1 under 1 Sun illumination and excellent salt rejecting performance when it is used as a self-floating solar evaporator. The proposed method provides an ideal and industrialized approach for the mass production of solar evaporators suitable for practical application environments.

Mechanical response of surface wettability of Janus porous membrane and its application in oil-water separation

Smart surfaces with switchable wettability are widely studied for environmental application. Although a large number of stimulation routes provide broad prospects for the development of smart surfaces, achieving high sensitivity, fast response and recovery, simple operation, security and good stability is still challenging. Herein, a Janus membrane via electrospinning, chemical bath deposition and heat treatment is constructed. By using the hydrophilic ZIF-L nanosheet to functionalize the hydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) substrate, a smart surface utilizes the ZIF-L crack induced by strain in the hydrophilic layer to control surface wettability is obtained. In the range of 0%-100% strain, the wettability of the smart surface presents an obvious change with stretching, and water contact angle of the surface shows a monotonic increase with a maximum tuning range from 47° to 114°. Due to local fusion of the TPU microfibers and good binding between the ZIF-L layer and the TPU substrate after heat treatment, the prepared Janus membrane exhibits consistent and symmetrical hydrophilic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic transition curves in 50 stretching-releasing cycles. Thanks to the porous and asymmetric architecture, the membrane shows good oil-water separation performance, and the separation flux increases with the increase of strain, while the separation efficiency is always higher than 98%. Because of the excellent structural stability, the robust membrane with 100% strain maintains its oil-water separation property for 50 stretching-releasing cycles. This study provides a new perspective for the development of smart material with stimuli responsive surface for oily wastewater purification.

Flexible Sensory Systems: Structural Approaches

Biology is characterized by smooth, elastic, and nonplanar surfaces; as a consequence, soft electronics that enable interfacing with nonplanar surfaces allow applications that could not be achieved with the rigid and integrated circuits that exist today. Here, we review the latest examples of technologies and methods that can replace elasticity through a structural approach; these approaches can modify mechanical properties, thereby improving performance, while maintaining the existing material integrity. Furthermore, an overview of the recent progress in wave/wrinkle, stretchable interconnect, origami/kirigami, crack, nano/micro, and textile structures is provided. Finally, potential applications and expected developments in soft electronics are discussed.

Large-Scale Fabrication of Graded Convex Structure for Superhydrophobic Coating Inspired by Nature

The addition of toxic substances and poor durability severely limit the market applications of superhydrophobic coatings in the oil−water-separation industry, anti-icing, and self-cleaning surfaces. In order to solve the above problems, a stable, strong, fluorine-free superhydrophobic coating was prepared according to natural inspiration. In this study, polydivinylbenzene (PDVB) was produced by the hydrothermal method, and micro-nanoparticle clusters composed of PDVB particles of different sizes were prepared by controlling the ratio of raw materials, which was then attached to the substrate surface by a simple spraying technique. A rough coating with a lotus-leaf-like layered protruding structure was constructed by depositing particle clusters of different sizes. In the end, the prepared coating showed attractive superhydrophobicity, with a maximum contact angle (CA) that reached up to 160°. In addition, the coating had long-lasting superhydrophobic properties in various environments, such as common liquid and acidic and alkaline solutions. Moreover, in the oil−water-separation process, the superhydrophobic filter paper was still able to obtain a separation efficiency of more than 85% after being used 50 times, and it maintained a contact angle of >150°. At the same time, the coating had excellent dye resistance and self-cleaning performance.

Preparation of Needleless Electrospinning Polyvinyl Alcohol/Water-Soluble Chitosan Nanofibrous Membranes: Antibacterial Property and Filter Efficiency

Electrospinning is an efficient method of producing nanofibers out of polymers that shows a great potential for the filtration territory. Featuring water-soluble chitosan (WS-CS), a low-pollution process and a self-made needleless machine, PVA/WS-CS nanofibrous membranes were prepared and evaluated for nanofiber diameter, bacteriostatic property, filtration efficiency, pressure drop, and quality factor. Test results indicate that the minimal fiber diameter was 216.58 ± 58.15 nm. Regardless of the WS-CS concentration, all of the PVA/WS-CS nanofibrous membranes attained a high porosity and a high water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), with a pore size of 12.06–22.48 nm. Moreover, the membranes also exhibit bacteriostatic efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, an optimal quality factor of 0.0825 Pa⁻¹, and a filtration efficiency as high as 97.0%, that is 72.5% higher than that of common masks.

Multifunctional Separator Allows Stable Cycling of Potassium Metal Anodes and of Potassium Metal Batteries

This is the first report of a multifunctional separator for potassium-metal batteries (KMBs). Double-coated tape-cast microscale AlF₃ on polypropylene (AlF₃ @PP) yields state-of-the-art electrochemical performance: symmetric cells are stable after 1000 cycles (2000 h) at 0.5 mA cm^-2 and 0.5 mAh cm^-2 , with 0.042 V overpotential. Stability is maintained at 5.0 mA cm^-2 for 600 cycles (240 h), with 0.138 V overpotential. Postcycled plated surface is dendrite-free, while stripped surface contains smooth solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Conventional PP cells fail rapidly, with dendrites at plating, and "dead metal" and SEI clumps at stripping. Potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) cathode KMBs with AlF₃ @PP display enhanced capacity retention (91% at 100 cycles vs 58%). AlF₃ partially reacts with K to form an artificial SEI containing KF, AlF₃ , and Al₂ O₃ phases. The AlF₃ @PP promotes complete electrolyte wetting and enhances uptake, improves ion conductivity, and increases ion transference number. The higher of K⁺ transference number is ascribed to the strong interaction between AlF₃ and FSI^- anions, as revealed through ¹⁹ F NMR. The enhancement in wetting and performance is general, being demonstrated with ester- and ether-based solvents, with K-, Na-, or Li- salts, and with different commercial separators. In full batteries, AlF₃ prevents Fe crossover and cycling-induced cathode pulverization.

Bioinspired Materials for Energy Storage

Nature offers a variety of interesting structures and intriguing functions for researchers to be learnt for advanced materials innovations. Recently, bioinspired materials have received intensive attention in energy storage applications. Inspired by various natural species, many new configurations and components of energy storage devices, such as rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors, have been designed and innovated. The bioinspired designs on energy devices, such as electrodes and electrolytes, have brought about excellent physical, chemical, and mechanical properties compared to the counterparts at their conventional forms. In this review, the design principles for bioinspired materials ranging from structures, synthesis, and functionalization to multi-scale ordering and device integration are first discussed, and then a brief summary is given on the recent progress on bioinspired materials for energy storage systems, particularly the widely studied rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors. Finally, a critical review on the current challenges and brief perspective on the future research focuses are proposed. It is expected that this review can offer some insights into the smart energy storage system design by learning from nature.
