Holistic insight mechanism of ozone-based oxidation process for wastewater treatment

The world is facing water crises because freshwater scarcity has become a global issue due to rapid population growth, resulting in the need for more industries, agriculture, and domestic sectors. Therefore, it is challenging for scientists and environmental engineers to treat wastewater with cost-effective treatment techniques. As compared to conventional processes (physical, chemical, and biological), advanced oxidation processes (AOP) play an essential role in the removal of wastewater contaminants, with the help of a powerful hydroxyl (OH•) through oxidation reactions. This review study investigates the critical role of O3-based Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) in tackling the complex difficulties of wastewater treatment. Effective treatment methods are critical, with wastewater originating from various sources, including industrial activity, pharmaceutical manufacturing, agriculture, and a wide range of toxins. O3-based AOPs appear to be powerful therapies capable of degrading a wide range of pollutants, including stubborn organics, medicines, and pesticides, reducing environmental and human health risks. This review sheds light on their efficacy in wastewater treatment by explaining the underlying reaction mechanisms and applications of several O3-based AOP processes, such as O3, O3/UV, and O3/H2O2. Ozone, a powerful oxidizing agent, stimulates the breakdown of complex chemical molecules by oxidation processes, which are aided further by synergistic combinations with ultraviolet (UV) radiation or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Notably, while ozonation alone may not always produce the best outcomes, it acts as an essential pretreatment step prior to traditional treatments, increasing total treatment efficiency. Furthermore, O3-based AOPs' transformational capacity to convert organic chemicals into simpler, more stable inorganic forms with little sludge creation emphasizes its sustainability and environmental benefits. This study sheds light on the processes, uses, and benefits of O3-based AOPs, presenting practical solutions for sustainable water management and environmental protection. It is a valuable resource for academics, engineers, and politicians looking for new ways to combat wastewater contamination and protect water resources.

Prediction of micropollutant degradation kinetic constant by ultrasonic using machine learning

A prediction model based on XGBoost is proposed for ultrasonic degradation of micropollutants' kinetic constants. After parameter optimization through iteration, the model achieves Evaluation metrics with R2 and SMAPE reaching 0.99 and 2.06%, respectively. The impact of design parameters on predicting kinetic constants for ultrasound degradation of trace pollutants was assessed using Shapley additive explanations (SHAP). Results indicate that power density and frequency significantly impact the predictive performance. The database was sorted based on power density and frequency values. Subsequently, 800 raw data were split into small databases of 200 each. After confirming that reducing the database size doesn't affect prediction accuracy, ultrasound degradation experiments were conducted for five pollutants, yielding experimental data. A small database with experimental conditions within the numerical range was selected. Data meeting both feature conditions were filtered, resulting in an optimized 60-data group. After incorporating experimental data, a model was trained for prediction. Degradation kinetic constants for experiments (kE) were compared with predicted constants (for 800 data-based model: kP-800 and for 60 data-based model: kP-60). Results showed ibuprofen, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, and 17β-Estradiol performed better on the 60-data group (kP-60/kE: 1.00, 0.99, 1.00, 1.00), while caffeine suited the model trained on the 800-data group (kP-800/kE: 1.02).

Impact of Fe3O4-porphyrin hybrid nanoparticles on wheat: Physiological and metabolic advance

Iron-magnetic nanoparticles (Fe-NMPs) are widely used in environmental remediation, while porphyrin-based hybrid materials anchored to silica-coated Fe3O4-nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs) have been used for water disinfection purposes. To assess their safety on plants, especially concerning potential environmental release, it was investigated for the first time, the impact on plants of a silica-coated Fe3O4-NPs bearing a porphyrinic formulation (FORM) - FORM@NMP. Additionally, FORM alone and the magnetic nanoparticles without FORM anchored (NH2@NMP) were used for comparison. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was chosen as a model species and was subjected to three environmentally relevant doses during germination and tiller development through root application. Morphological, physiological, and metabolic parameters were assessed. Despite a modest biomass decrease and alterations in membrane properties, no major impairments in germination or seedling development were observed. During tiller phase, both Fe3O4-NPs increased leaf length, and photosynthesis exhibited varied impacts: both Fe3O4-NPs and FORM alone increased pigments; only Fe3O4-NPs promoted gas exchange; all treatments improved the photochemical phase. Regarding oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation decreased in FORM and FORM@NMP, yet with increased O2-• in FORM@NMP; total flavonoids decreased in NH2@NMP and antioxidant enzymes declined across all materials. Phenolic profiling revealed a generalized trend towards a decrease in flavones. In conclusion, these nanoparticles can modulate wheat physiology/metabolism without apparently inducing phytotoxicity at low doses and during short-time exposure. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Iron-magnetic nanoparticles are widely used in environmental remediation and fertilization, besides of new applications continuously being developed, making them emerging contaminants. Soil is a major sink for these nanoparticles and their fate and potential environmental risks in ecosystems must be addressed to achieve more sustainable environmental applications. Furthermore, as the reuse of treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation is being claimed, it is of major importance to disclose the impact on crops of the nanoparticles used for wastewater decontamination, such as those proposed in this work.

Epoxiconazole degradation in water samples: a comparative study of Fenton, photo-Fenton, solar photo-Fenton, and solar photolysis processes

Epoxiconazole (EPO) is classified as a persistent organic pollutant due to its ability to persist in the environment for prolonged periods. Its degradation is pivotal in mitigating its environmental impact. This investigation focuses on assessing the degradation of EPO using various methodologies, namely Fenton, photo-Fenton, solar photo-Fenton, and solar photolysis, conducted in both Milli-Q water and groundwater. These experiments encompassed evaluations at both the standard pH typically used in photo-Fenton reactions and the natural pH levels inherent to the respective aqueous environments. Additionally, EPO degradation products were analyzed after a 60-min reaction. Notably, in systems utilizing groundwater, the inclusion of additional iron was unnecessary, as the naturally occurring iron content in the groundwater facilitated the intended processes. Specifically, in Milli-Q water, solar photo-Fenton demonstrated an EPO degradation efficiency of 97%. Furthermore, the substitution of Milli-Q water with groundwater in Fenton-like processes did not significantly affect the efficacy of EPO degradation. These findings underscore the potential of solar photo-Fenton as an economically viable and environmentally sustainable strategy for EPO degradation.

Recent Advancement in Emerging MXene-Based Photocatalytic Membrane for Revolutionizing Wastewater Treatment

MXene-based photocatalytic membranes provide significant benefits for wastewater treatment by effectively combining membrane separation and photocatalytic degradation processes. MXene represents a pioneering 2D photocatalyst with a variable elemental composition, substantial surface area, abundant surface terminations, and exceptional photoelectric performance, offering significant advantages in producing high-performance photocatalytic membranes. In this review, an in-depth overview of the latest scientific progress in MXene-based photocatalytic membranes is provided. Initially, a brief introduction to the structure and photocatalytic capabilities of MXene is provided, highlighting their pivotal role in promoting the photocatalytic process. Subsequently, in pursuit of the optimal MXene-based photocatalytic membrane, critical factors such as the morphology, hydrophilicity, and stability of MXenes are meticulously taken into account. Various preparation strategies for MXene-based photocatalytic membranes, including blending, vacuum filtration, and dip coating, are also discussed. Furthermore, the application and mechanism of MXene-based photocatalytic membranes in micropollutant removal, oil-water separation, and antibacterial are examined. Lastly, the challenges in the development and practical application of MXene-based photocatalytic membranes, as well as their future research direction are delineated.

Recent Developments in Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Framework Materials for Water Remediation under Visible-Light Irradiation

Access to clean drinking water is a basic requirement, and eliminating pollutants from wastewater is important for saving water ecosystems. The porous structure and surface characteristics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can function as a perfect scaffold for removing toxic compounds from wastewater. Porphyrins are promising building blocks for constructing MOFs. Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (P-MOFs) have been fabricated using porphyrin ligands, metal clusters, or ions. These materials can harvest light from a wide region of the solar spectrum, and their framework morphology and physicochemical properties can be controlled by changing their peripheral subunits or metal ions. These porous crystalline materials have generated interest because of their distinctive characteristics, including large permanent porosity, interesting surface morphology, broad conformational diversity, high photostability, and semiconducting nature. This article discusses the recent progress and usefulness of P-MOFs. The fabrication procedures of P-MOFs are discussed, followed by the adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of contaminants from wastewater. The relationships between the geometries of P-MOFs and their light-harvesting and charge-transfer mechanisms for the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants are highlighted. Finally, some future perspectives and obstacles in the photodegradation usage of P-MOFs are discussed, along with feasible research directions to standardize efficient photocatalysts for improved photodegradation for water treatment.

Pressures of the urban environment on the endocrine system: Adverse effects and adaptation

With an increasing collective awareness of the rapid environmental changes, questions and theories regarding the adaptability of organisms are emerging. Global warming as well as chemical and non-chemical pollution have been identified as triggers of these adaptative changes, but can we link different kinds of stressors to certain phenotypic traits? The physiological adaptation, and particularly endocrine system adaptation, of living beings to urban environments is a fascinating way of studying urban endocrinology, which has emerged as a research field in 2007. In this paper, we stress how endocrine disruption in humans and environment can be studied in the urban environment by measuring the levels of pollution, endocrine activities or adversity. We broaden the focus to include not only exposure to the chemicals that have invaded our private spheres and their effects on wild and domestic species but also non-chemical effectors such as light, noise and climate change. We argue that taking into account the various urban stress factors and their effects on the endocrine system would enable the adoption of new approaches to protect living organisms.

Bio-based matrix photocatalysts for photodegradation of antibiotics

Antibiotics development during the last century permitted unprecedent medical advances. However, it is undeniable that there has been an abuse and misuse of antimicrobials in medicine and cosmetics, food production and food processing, in the last decades. The pay toll for human development and consumism is the emergence of extended antimicrobial resistance and omnipresent contamination of the biosphere. The One Health concept recognizes the interconnection of human, environmental and animal health, being impossible alter one without affecting the others. In this context, antibiotic decontamination from water-sources is of upmost importance, with new and more efficient strategies needed. In this framework, light-driven antibiotic degradation has gained interest in the last few years, strongly relying in semiconductor photocatalysts. To improve the semiconductor properties (i.e., efficiency, recovery, bandgap width, dispersibility, wavelength excitation, etc.), bio-based supporting material as photocatalysts matrices have been thoroughly studied, exploring synergetic effects as operating parameters that could improve the photodegradation of antibiotics. The present work describes some of the most relevant advances of the last 5 years on photodegradation of antibiotics and other antimicrobial molecules. It presents the conjugation of semiconductor photocatalysts to different organic scaffolds (biochar and biopolymers), then to describe hybrid systems based on g-C3N4 and finally addressing the emerging use of organic photocatalysts. These systems were developed for the degradation of several antibiotics and antimicrobials, and tested under different conditions, which are analyzed and thoroughly discussed along the work.

Environmental remediation of the norfloxacin in water by adsorption: Advances, current status and prospects

Antibiotics are considered as the new generation water pollutants as these disturb endocrine systems if water contaminated with antibiotics is consumed. Among many antibiotics norfloxacin is present in various natural water bodies globally. This antibiotic is considered an emerging pollutant due to its low degradation in aquatic animals. Besides, it has many side effects on human vital organs. Therefore, the present article discusses the recent advances in the removal of norfloxacin by adsorption. This article describes the presence of norfloxacin in natural water, consumption, toxicity, various adsorbents for norfloxacin removal, optimization factors for norfloxacin removal, kinetics, thermodynamics, modeling, adsorption mechanism and regeneration of the adsorbents. Adsorption takes place in a monolayer following the Langmuir model. The Pseudo-second order model represents the kinetic data. The adsorption capacity ranged from 0.924 to 1282 mg g-1. In this sense, the parameters such as the NFX concentration added to the adsorbent textural properties exerted a great influence. Besides, the fixed bed-based removal at a large scale is also included. In addition to this, the simulation studies were also discussed to describe the adsorption mechanism. Finally, the research challenges and future perspectives have also been highlighted. This article will be highly useful for academicians, researchers, industry persons, and government authorities for designing future advanced experiments.

Porphyrin-Based Nanomaterials for the Photocatalytic Remediation of Wastewater: Recent Advances and Perspectives

Self-organized, well-defined porphyrin-based nanostructures with controllable sizes and morphologies are in high demand for the photodegradation of hazardous contaminants under sunlight. From this perspective, this review summarizes the development progress in the fabrication of porphyrin-based nanostructures by changing their synthetic strategies and designs. Porphyrin-based nanostructures can be fabricated using several methods, including ionic self-assembly, metal-ligand coordination, reprecipitation, and surfactant-assisted methods. The synthetic utility of porphyrins permits the organization of porphyrin building blocks into nanostructures, which can remarkably improve their light-harvesting properties and photostability. The tunable functionalization and distinctive structures of porphyrin nanomaterials trigger the junction of the charge-transfer mechanism and facilitate the photodegradation of pollutant dyes. Finally, porphyrin nanomaterials or porphyrin/metal nanohybrids are explored to amplify their photocatalytic efficiency.

Hydrophilic Biocompatible Fluorescent Organic Nanoparticles as Nanocarriers for Biosourced Photosensitizers for Photodynamic Therapy

Most photosensitizers of interest for photodynamic therapy-especially porphyrinoids and chlorins-are hydrophobic. To circumvent this difficulty, the use of nanocarriers is an attractive strategy. In this perspective, we have developed highly water-soluble and biocompatible fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONPs) made from citric acid and diethyltriamine which are then activated by ethlynene diamine as nanoplatforms for efficient photosensitizers (PSs). Purpurin 18 (Pp18) was selected as a biosourced chlorin photosensitizer combining the efficient single oxygen generation ability and suitable absorption in the biological spectral window. The simple reaction of activated FONPs with Pp18, which contains a reactive anhydride ring, yielded nanoparticles containing both Pp18 and Cp6 derivatives. These functionalized nanoparticles combine solubility in water, high singlet oxygen generation quantum yield in aqueous media (0.72) and absorption both in the near UV region (FONPS) and in the visible region (Soret band approximately 420 nm as well as Q bands at 500 nm, 560 nm, 660 nm and 710 nm). The functionalized nanoparticles retain the blue fluorescence of FONPs when excited in the near UV region but also show deep-red or NIR fluorescence when excited in the visible absorption bands of the PSs (typically at 520 nm, 660 nm or 710 nm). Moreover, these nanoparticles behave as efficient photosensitizers inducing colorectal cancer cell (HCT116 and HT-29 cell lines) death upon illumination at 650 nm. Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values down to, respectively, 0.04 and 0.13 nmol/mL were observed showing the potential of FONPs[Cp6] for the PDT treatment of cancer. In conclusion, we have shown that these novel biocompatible nanoparticles, which can be elaborated from biosourced components, both show deep-red emission upon excitation in the red region and are able to produce singlet oxygen with high efficiency in aqueous environments. Moreover, they show high PDT efficiency on colorectal cancer cells upon excitation in the deep red region. As such, these functional organic nanoparticles hold promise both for PDT treatment and theranostics.

Unraveling kinetic and synergistic effects during ultrasound-enhanced carbocatalysis for water remediation as a function of ultrasonic frequency

The ability of the ultrasound (US) combined with peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and a carbonaceous material (BC) was evaluated in the degradation of a model pollutant (acetaminophen, ACE). The US/BC/PMS system was compared with other possible systems (US, oxidation by PMS, BC adsorption, BC/PMS, US/PMS, and US/BC. The effect of the ultrasonic frequency (40, 375, and 1135 kHz) on the kinetics and synergy of the ACE removal was evaluated. In the US system, kinetics was favored at 375 kHz due to the increased production of hydroxyl radicals (HO•), but this did not improve in the US/PMS and US/BC systems. However, synergistic and antagonistic effects were observed at the low and high frequencies where the production of radicals is less efficient but there is an activation of PMS through mechanical effects. US/BC/PMS at 40 kHz was the most efficient system obtaining ∼95% ACE removal (40 μM) in the first 10 min of treatment, and high synergy (S = 10.30). This was promoted by disaggregation of the carbonaceous material, increasing the availability of catalytic sites where PMS is activated. The coexistence of free-radical and non-radical pathways was analyzed. Singlet oxygen (1O2) played the dominant role in degradation, while HO• and sulfate radicals (SO4•-), scarcely generated at low frequency, play a minimum role. Performance in hospital wastewater (HWW), urine, and seawater (SW) evidenced the competition of organic matter by BC active sites and reactive species and the removal enhancement when Cl- is present. Besides, toxicity decreased by ∼20% after treatment, being the system effective after three cycles of reuse.

Recent developments on advanced oxidation processes for degradation of pollutants from wastewater with focus on antibiotics and organic dyes

The existence of various pollutants in water environment contributes to global pollution and poses significant threats to humans, wildlife, and other living beings. The emergence of an effective, realistic, cost-effective, and environmentally acceptable technique to treat wastewater generated from different sectors is critical for reducing pollutant accumulation in the environment. The electrochemical advanced oxidation method is a productive technology for treating hazardous effluents because of its potential benefits such as lack of secondary pollutant and high oxidation efficiency. Recent researches on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the period of 2018-2022 are highlighted in this paper. This review emphasizes on recent advances in electro-oxidation (EO), ozone oxidation, sonolysis, radiation, electro-Fenton (EF), photolysis and photocatalysis targeted at treating pharmaceuticals, dyes and pesticides polluted effluents. In the first half of the review, the concept of the AOPs are discussed briefly. Later, the influence of increasing current density, pH, electrode, electrolyte and initial concentration of effluents on degradation are discussed. Lastly, previously reported designs of electrochemical reactors, as well as data on intermediates generated and energy consumption during the electro oxidation and Fenton processes are discussed. According to the literature study, the electro-oxidation technique is more appropriate for organic compounds, whilst the electro-Fenton technique appear to be more appropriate for more complex molecules.

A cohesive effort to assess the suitability and disparity of carbon nanotubes for water treatment

Population growth, industrialization, and the extensive use of chemicals in daily life have all contributed to an increase in waste generation and an intensified release of organic pollutants into the aquatic environment. To ensure the quality of water (including natural resources), the removal of these pollutants from wastewater has become a challenging task for scientific community. Conventional physical, chemical, and biological treatment methods are commonly used in combinations and are not very effective. Recently, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) emerged as the most reliable and adaptable choice for efficient water treatment due to their extraordinary material properties appearing as a single-step solution for water treatment. High surface area, exceptional porosities, hollow and layered structures, and ease of chemical activation and functionalization are some properties which makes it excellent adsorption material. Hence, this review paper discusses the recent advances in the synthesis, purification, and functionalization of CNTs for water and wastewater treatment. In addition, this study also also provides a quick overview of CNTs-based advance technologies employed in water treatment and carefully assesses the benefits versus risks during large-scale water treatment. Furthermore, it concludes that identified risks to the environment and human health cannot be easily ignored and strict regulatory requirements are a must for producing low-cost innoxious CNTs.

Colorimetric Sensors Based on Poly(acrylic Acid)/TiO2 Nanocomposite Hydrogels for Monitoring UV Radiation Exposure

In recent years, there has been an open debate on proper sun exposure to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. The mainly encountered issue is that general guidelines for UV radiation exposure could not be effective for all skin types. The implementation of customized guidelines requires a method by which to measure the UV dose as a result of daily exposure to sunlight, ideally with an inexpensive, easy-to-read sensor. In this work, we present the characterization of nanocomposite hydrogel materials acting as colorimetric sensors upon exposure to UV light. The sensor was prepared using a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel matrix in which TiO2 nanoparticles and methylene blue (MB) were integrated. Raman mapping was used to determine the network structure of the hydrogel and its water distribution. The TiO2 nanoparticles dispersed in the PAA matrix maintain their photoactivity and catalyze a reaction by which methylene blue is converted into leuko-methylene. The conversion causes a discoloration effect that is visible to the naked eye and can therefore be used as an indicator of UV radiation exposure. Moreover, it was possible to tune the discoloration rate to the limit exposure of each skin type, simply by changing the ratio of titanium dioxide to dye. We obtained a response time ranging from 30 min to 1.5 h. Future work will be dedicated to the possibility of scaling up this range and to improve the sensor wearability; however, our study paves the way to the realisation of sensors suitable for public use, which could help us find a solution to the challenge of balancing sufficient UV exposure to prevent Vitamin D deficiency with excessive UV exposure that could ultimately cause skin cancer.

Systematic study of the synergistic and kinetics effects on the removal of contaminants of emerging concern from water by ultrasound in the presence of diverse oxidants

The enhancement of the ultrasound system by adding diverse oxidants to remove a model contaminant (acetaminophen, ACE) in water was investigated. Different parameters were evaluated to study their effect on both the degradation kinetics and the synergy of the combination. The variables studied were the ultrasonic frequency (575, 858, and 1135 kHz), type of oxidant (hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxydisulfate (or persulfate, PDS), and potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS)), ACE concentration (4, 8, and 40 µM), and oxidant concentration (0.01, 0.1, 1, and 5 mM). Particular interest was placed on synergistic effects, implying that one process (or both) is activated by the other to lead to greater efficiency. Interestingly, the parameters that led to the higher synergistic effects did not always lead to the most favorable degradation kinetics. An increase in ACE removal of 20% was obtained using the highest frequency studied (1135 kHz), PMS 0.1 mM, and the highest concentration of ACE (40 µM). The intensification of degradation was mainly due to the ability of ultrasound to activate oxidants and produce extra hydroxyl radicals (HO•) or sulfate radicals (SO4•-). Under these conditions, treatment of ACE spiked into seawater, hospital wastewater, and urine was performed. The hospital wastewater matrix inhibited ACE degradation slightly, while the urine components inhibited the pollutant degradation completely. The inhibition was mainly attributed to the competing organic matter in the effluents for the sono-generated radical species. On the contrary, the removal of ACE in seawater was significantly intensified due to "salting out" effects and the production of the strong oxidant HOCl from the reaction of chloride ions with PMS.

Nanotechnology as an efficient and effective alternative for wastewater treatment: an overview

The increase in the surface and groundwater contamination due to global population growth, industrialization, proliferation of pathogens, emerging pollutants, heavy metals, and scarcity of drinking water represents a critical problem. Because of this problem, particular emphasis will be placed on wastewater recycling. Conventional wastewater treatment methods may be limited due to high investment costs or, in some cases, poor treatment efficiency. To address these issues, it is necessary to continuously evaluate novel technologies that complement and improve these traditional wastewater treatment processes. In this regard, technologies based on nanomaterials are also being studied. These technologies improve wastewater management and constitute one of the main focuses of nanotechnology. The following review describes wastewater's primary biological, organic, and inorganic contaminants. Subsequently, it focuses on the potential of different nanomaterials (metal oxides, carbon-based nanomaterials, cellulose-based nanomaterials), membrane, and nanobioremediation processes for wastewater treatment. The above is evident from the review of various publications. However, nanomaterials' cost, toxicity, and biodegradability need to be addressed before their commercial distribution and scale-up. The development of nanomaterials and nanoproducts must be sustainable and safe throughout the nanoproduct life cycle to meet the requirements of the circular economy.

Electrochemically assisted production of biogenic palladium nanoparticles for the catalytic removal of micropollutants in wastewater treatment plants effluent

Biogenic palladium nanoparticles (bio-Pd NPs) are used for the reductive transformation and/or dehalogenation of persistent micropollutants. In this work, H₂ (electron donor) was produced in situ by an electrochemical cell, permitting steered production of differently sized bio-Pd NPs. The catalytic activity was first assessed by the degradation of methyl orange. The NPs showing the highest catalytic activity were selected for the removal of micropollutants from secondary treated municipal wastewater. The synthesis at different H₂ flow rates (0.310 L/hr or 0.646 L/hr) influenced the bio-Pd NPs size. The NPs produced over 6 hr at a low H₂ flow rate had a larger size (D50 = 39.0 nm) than those produced in 3 hr at a high H₂ flow rate (D50 = 23.2 nm). Removal of 92.1% and 44.3% of methyl orange was obtained after 30 min for the NPs with sizes of 39.0 nm and 23.2 nm, respectively. Bio-Pd NPs of 39.0 nm were used to treat micropollutants present in secondary treated municipal wastewater at concentrations ranging from µg/L to ng/L. Effective removal of 8 compounds was observed: ibuprofen (69.5%) < sulfamethoxazole (80.6%) < naproxen (81.4%) < furosemide (89.7%) < citalopram (91.7%) < diclofenac (91.9%) < atorvastatin (> 94.3%) < lorazepam (97.2%). Removal of fluorinated antibiotics occurred at > 90% efficiency. Overall, these data indicate that the size, and thus the catalytic activity of the NPs can be steered and that the removal of challenging micropollutants at environmentally relevant concentrations can be achieved through the use of bio-Pd NPs.

Photomodulation Approaches to Overcome Antimicrobial Resistance

Photopharmacology is an approach that aims to be an alternative to classical chemotherapy. Herein, the different classes of photoswitches and photocleavage compounds and their biological applications are described. Proteolysis targeting chimeras (PROTACs) containing azobenzene moieties (PHOTACs) and photocleavable protecting groups (photocaged PROTACs) are also mentioned. Furthermore, porphyrins are referenced as successful photoactive compounds in a clinical context, such as in the photodynamic therapy of tumours as well as preventing antimicrobial resistance, namely in bacteria. Porphyrins combining photoswitches and photocleavage systems are highlighted, taking advantage of both photopharmacology and photodynamic action. Finally, porphyrins with antibacterial activity are described, taking advantage of the synergistic effect of photodynamic treatment and antibiotic therapy to overcome bacterial resistance.

Synthesis of magnetic graphene-like carbon nitride-cobalt ferrite (g-C3N4/CoFe2O4) nanocomposite for sonocatalytic remediation of toxic organic dyes

A novel magnetic g-C₃N₄/CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method and applied as a new graphene-like carbon nitride-based sonocatalyst for sonodegradation of pollutant dyes. The as-prepared samples were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), BET surface area measurements and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results indicate that the nanocomposite sample is composed of spherical CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles adhered to g-C₃N₄ naosheets. The g-C₃N₄/CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposites were used as a new magnetically separable sonocatalyst in H₂O₂-assisted sonodegradation of methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes in aqueous media. The results showed complete degradation (ca. 100%) of dyes within short times (30-35 min). The sonocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) was greatly enhanced with CoFe₂O₄ modification. Trapping experiments indicated that the g-C₃N₄/CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposites serves as a generator of hydroxyl radical (˙OH) via activation of H₂O₂ for degradation of dyes under ultrasound irradiation. Furthermore, the magnetic sonocatalyst can be separated from solution by an external magnet and reused several times without observable loss of activity. The possible mechanism of sonocatalytic activity was also proposed according to experimental results.

Photodynamic inactivation of microorganisms in different water matrices: The effect of physicochemical parameters on the treatment outcome

Wastewater (WW) insufficiently treated for the disinfection of microorganisms, including pathogenic ones, is a source of concern and a possible generator of public health problems. Traditional disinfection methods to reduce pathogens concentration (e.g., chlorination, ozonation, UV) are expensive, unsafe, and/or sometimes ineffective, highlighting the need for new disinfection technologies. The promising results of photodynamic inactivation (PDI) treatment to eradicate microorganisms suggest the efficacy of this treatment to improve WW quality. This work aimed to assess if PDI can be successfully extended to real contexts for the microbial inactivation in WW. For the first time, PDI experiments with 9 different water matrices compositions were performed to inquire about the influence of some of their physicochemical parameters on the effectiveness of microbial inactivation. Bacterial photoinactivation was tested in freshwater, aquaculture water, and seawater samples, as well as in influents and effluents samples from domestic, industrial, and a mixture of industrial and domestic WW receiving wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Additionally, PDI assays were performed in phosphate-buffered saline isotonic solution (PBS), used as an aqueous comparative matrix. To relate the PDI disinfection efficiency with the physicochemical compositions of the different used water matrices, a series of statistical analysis were performed, in order to support our main conclusions. Overall, the results showed that PDI is an effective and promising alternative to traditionally used WW disinfection methods, with a bacterial reduction of >3.0 log CFU/mL in all the water matrices within the first hour of PDI treatment, but also that the physicochemical composition of the aqueous matrices to be PDI-disinfected must be taken into account since they seem to influence the PDI efficacy, namely the pH, with acidic pH conditions seeming to be associated to a better PDI performance in general.

A review of the adsorption method for norfloxacin reduction from aqueous media

Norfloxacin (NRFX) is one of a class of antibiotics known as broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is frequently used to treat infectious disorders in both animals and humans. NRFX is considered an emergent pharmaceutical contaminate. This review's objective is to evaluate empirical data on NRFX's removal from aqueous medium. The environmental danger of NRFX in the aquatic environment was validated by an initial ecotoxicological study. Graphene oxide/Metal Organic Framework (MOF) based composite, followed by Magnesium oxide/Chitosan/Graphene oxide composite gave the highest NRFX adsorption capacities (Qmax) of 1114.8 and 1000 mg/g, respectively. The main adsorption mechanisms for NRFX uptake include electrostatic interactions, H-bonds, π-π interactions, electron donor-acceptor interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and pore diffusion. The adsorptive uptake of NRFX were most suitably described by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order implying adsorbate-to-adsorbent electron transfer on a monolayer surface. The thermodynamics of NRFX uptake is heavily dependent on the makeup of the adsorbent, and the selection of the eluent for desorption from the solid phase is equally important. There were detected knowledge gaps in column studies and adsorbent disposal method. There's great interest in scale-up and industrial applications of research results that will aid in management of water resources for sustainability.

Effect of Pharmaceutical Sludge Pre-Treatment with Fenton/Fenton-like Reagents on Toxicity and Anaerobic Digestion Efficiency

Sewage sludge is successfully used in anaerobic digestion (AD). Although AD is a well-known, universal and widely recognized technology, there are factors that limit its widespread use, such as the presence of substances that are resistant to biodegradation, inhibit the fermentation process or are toxic to anaerobic microorganisms. Sewage sludge generated by the pharmaceutical sector is one such substance. Pharmaceutical sewage sludge (PSS) is characterized by high concentrations of biocides, including antibiotics and other compounds that have a negative effect on the anaerobic environment. The aim of the present research was to determine the feasibility of applying Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) harnessing Fenton's (Fe²⁺/H₂O₂) and Fenton-like (Fe³⁺/H₂O₂) reaction to PSS pre-treatment prior to AD. The method was analyzed in terms of its impact on limiting PSS toxicity and improving methane fermentation. The use of AOP led to a significant reduction of PSS toxicity from 53.3 ± 5.1% to 35.7 ± 3.2%, which had a direct impact on the taxonomic structure of anaerobic bacteria, and thus influenced biogas production efficiency and methane content. Correlations were found between PSS toxicity and the presence of Archaea and biogas yields in the Fe²⁺/H₂O₂ group. CH₄ production ranged from 363.2 ± 11.9 cm³ CH₄/g VS in the control PSS to approximately 450 cm³/g VS. This was 445.7 ± 21.6 cm³ CH₄/g VS (1.5 g Fe²⁺/dm³ and 6.0 g H₂O₂/dm³) and 453.6 ± 22.4 cm³ CH₄/g VS (2.0 g Fe²⁺/dm³ and 8.0 g H₂O₂/dm³). The differences between these variants were not statistically significant. Therefore, due to the economical use of chemical reagents, the optimal tested dose was 1.5 g Fe²⁺/6.0 g H₂O₂. The use of a Fenton-like reagent (Fe³⁺/H₂O₂) resulted in lower AD efficiency (max. 393.7 ± 12.1 cm³ CH₄/g VS), and no strong linear relationships between the analyzed variables were found. It is, therefore, a more difficult method to estimate the final effects. Research has proven that AOP can be used to improve the efficiency of AD of PSS.

Multi-Dimensional Elimination of β-Lactams in the Rural Wetland: Molecule Design and Screening for More Antibacterial and Degradable Substitutes

Restricted economic conditions and limited sewage treatment facilities in rural areas lead to the discharge of small-scale breeding wastewater containing higher values of residual beta-lactam antibiotics (β-lactams), which seriously threatens the aquatic environment. In this paper, molecular docking and a comprehensive method were performed to quantify and fit the source modification for the combined biodegradation of β-lactams. Using penicillin (PNC) as the target molecule, combined with contour maps for substitute modification, a three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) model was constructed for the high-performance combined biodegradation of β-lactams. The selected candidate with better environmental friendliness, functionality, and high performance was screened. By using the homology modeling algorithms, the mutant penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) of Escherichia coli were constructed to have antibacterial resistance against β-lactams. The molecular docking was applied to obtain the target substitute by analyzing the degree of antibacterial resistance of β-lactam substitute. The combined biodegradation of β-lactams and substitute in the constructed wetland (CW) by different wetland plant root secretions was studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The result showed a 49.28% higher biodegradation of the substitutes than PNC when the combined wetland plant species of Eichhornia crassipes, Phragmites australis, and Canna indica L. were employed.

A detailed review on advanced oxidation process in treatment of wastewater: Mechanism, challenges and future outlook

The presence of several contaminants in waterbodies raises global pollution and creates major risks to mankind, wildlife, as well as other living organisms. Development of an effective, feasible, cost-effective and eco-friendly approach for treating wastewater that is discharged from various industries is important for bringing down the deposition of contaminants into environment. Advanced oxidation process is an efficient technique for treating wastewater owing to its advantages such as high oxidation efficacy and does not produce any secondary pollutants. Advanced oxidation process can be performed through various methods such as ozone, Fenton, electrochemical, photolysis, sonolysis, etc. These methods have been widely utilized for degradation of emerging pollutants that cannot be destroyed using conventional approaches. This review focuses on wastewater treatment using advanced oxidation process. A brief discussion on mechanism involved is provided. In addition, various types of advanced oxidation process and their mechanism are explained in detail. Challenges faced during wastewater treatment process using oxidation, electrochemical, Fenton, photocatalysis and sonolysis are discussed elaborately. Advanced oxidation process can be viewed as potential approach for treating wastewater with certain modifications and solving challenges.

Sn(IV)-Porphyrin-Based Nanostructures Featuring Pd(II)-Mediated Supramolecular Arrays and Their Photocatalytic Degradation of Acid Orange 7 Dye

Two robust Sn(IV)-porphyrin-based supramolecular arrays (1 and 2) were synthesized via the reaction of trans-Pd(PhCN)2Cl2 with two precursor building blocks (SnP1 and SnP2). The structural patterns in these architectures vary from 2D to 3D depending on the axial ligation of Sn(IV)-porphyrin units. A discrete 2D tetrameric supramolecule (1) was constructed by coordination of {(trans-dihydroxo)[5,10-bis(4-pyridyl)-15,20-bis(phenyl) porphyrinato]}tin(IV) (SnP1) with trans-PdCl2 units. In contrast, the coordination between the {(trans-diisonicotinato)[5,10-bis(4-pyridyl)-15,20-bis(phenyl)porphyrinato]}tin(IV) (SnP2) and trans-PdCl2 units formed a divergent 3D array (2). Axial ligation of the Sn(IV)-porphyrin building blocks not only alters the supramolecular arrays but also significantly modifies the nanostructures, including porosity, surface area, stability, and morphology. These structural changes consequently affected the photocatalytic degradation efficiency under visible-light irradiation towards acid orange 7 (AO) dye in an aqueous solution. The degradation efficiency of the AO dye in the aqueous solution was observed to be between 86% to 91% within 90 min by these photocatalysts.

Influence of Wurtzite ZnO Morphology on Piezophototronic Effect in Photocatalysis

A piezoelectric field promotes the photocatalytic activity of a photocatalyst by helping separating photo-generated charge carriers. Wurtzite phase ZnO is a typical photocatalyst with a piezoelectric property, thus self-assisted photocatalysis with ZnO based on the piezophototronic effect can be achieved. ZnO nanorods or nanowires with a clear c-axis have been well studied, while other morphologies have not been fully discussed. In this work, we prepared wurtzite phase ZnO with four different morphologies. By comparing their photocatalytic activity for degradation of Rhodamine B under the same mechanical energy source provided by ultrasound, the effect of morphology and exposed facets on photo-induced charge separation were highlighted. The ZnO nanowire photocatalyst delivered an impressive improvement in photocatalytic efficiency when ultrasound driven, suggesting that the morphology-related piezophototronic effect had a positive effect on separation of photo-generated charge carriers, and more exposed active facets benefitted the utilization of charge carriers.

Recent development on core-shell photo(electro)catalysts for elimination of organic compounds from pharmaceutical wastewater

Pharmaceutical organics are a vital milestone in contemporary human research since they treat various diseases and improve the quality of human life. However, these organic compounds are considered one of the major environmental hazards after the conception, along with the massive rise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in an ecosystem. There are various biological and catalytic technologies existed to eliminate these organics in aqueous system with their limitation. Advanced Oxidation processes (AOPs) are used to decompose these pharmaceutical organic compounds in the wastewater by generating reactive species with high oxidation potential. This review focused various photocatalysts, and photocatalytic oxidation processes, especially core-shell materials for photo (electro)catalytic application in pharmaceutical wastewater decomposition. Moreover, we discussed in details about the design and recent developments of core shell catalysts and comparison for photocatalytic, electrocatalytic and photo electrocatalytic applications in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. In addition, the mixture of inorganic and organic core-shell materials, and metal-organic framework-based core-shell catalysts discussed in detail for antibiotic degradation.

Bi-based photocatalysts for bacterial inactivation in water: Inactivation mechanisms, challenges, and strategies to improve the photocatalytic activity

Bi-based photocatalysts have been considered suitable materials for water disinfection under natural solar light due to their outstanding optical and electronic properties. However, until now, there are not extensive reviews about the development of Bi-based materials and their application in bacterial inactivation in aqueous solutions. For this reason, this work has focused on summarizing the state of the art related to the inactivation of Gram- and Gram + pathogenic bacteria under visible light irradiation using different Bi-based micro and nano structures. In this sense, the photocatalytic bacterial inactivation mechanisms are analyzed, considering several modifications. The factors that can affect the photocatalytic performance of these materials in real conditions and at a large scale (e.g., water characteristics, pH, light intensity, photocatalyst dosage, and bacteria level) have been studied. Furthermore, current alternatives for improving the photocatalytic antibacterial activity and reuse of Bi-based materials (e.g., surface engineering, crystal facet engineering, doping, noble metal coupling, heterojunctions, Z-scheme junctions, coupling with graphene derivatives, magnetic composites, immobilization) have been explored. According to several reports, inactivation rate values higher than 90% can be achieved by using the modified Bi-based micro/nano structures, which become them excellent candidates for photocatalytic water disinfection. However, these innovative photocatalytic materials bring a variety of future difficulties and opportunities in water disinfection.

Modification of natural chitosan with Fe and Ce cations as photocatalyst beads: Degradation of dye chemicals and textile wastewater under UVA light

The photocatalytic effect of ferrous and cerium loaded catalysts produced from chitosan beads (CB) was investigated for dye removal and textile wastewater degradation. Commercially available chitosan was initially shaped into beads form and modified with ferrous and cerium compounds. The amount of ferrous and cerium loaded on the chitosan beads were calculated as 22 mg Fe/g CB, 60 mg Ce/g CB, respectively. The chemical formation and morphology of the catalysts were characterized with SEM-EDS. Photocatalytic studies with UVA irradiation were carried out using 20 mg/L Direct Orange 46 (DO46) textile dye solution, 1 g/L catalyst and 10 mM H₂O₂ and the dye removal efficiencies for CB, Fe/CB and Ce/CB were obtained as 10%, 60% and 26%, respectively As a result of the characterization and photocatalytic studies, the produced Fe/CB was then used for the treatment of the textile industry wastewater and while 21% total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency was obtained, 30, 23 and 26% color removal efficiencies were calculated for 436, 525 and 620 nm wavelengths, respectively.

Enhanced UV Direct Photolysis and UV/H2O2 for Oxidation of Triclosan and Ibuprofen in Synthetic Effluent: an Experimental Study

This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of an advanced oxidation system based on UV radiation and UV/H₂O₂ for degradation of TCS and IBU in synthetic effluent. The assays occurred in a 2-L reactor, protected from external light and equipped with a UV lamp (λ = 254 nm). The effect of contaminant concentration, fractions of chemical species present, and mineralization were evaluated. In the UV/ H₂O₂ system, different concentrations of H₂O₂ were studied for oxidation of the contaminants. The kinetic experiments took place between 75 and 270 min of UV irradiation. The results showed > 99% oxidation of TCS in the direct photolysis system at pH 9.4 after 12 min. The degradation of IBU in the UV/H₂O₂ system, when 10 mg L^-1 of H₂O₂ was used, was 97.39% oxidation. We obtained k' values of 0.189 min^-1 for TCS when its highest oxidation occurred and k' values of 0.0219 min^-1 for IBU. The system was not able to completely mineralize the contaminants, presenting high values of TOC and COD after treatment, thus suggesting the occurrence of phototransformation.

Ecological safety with multifunctional applications of biogenic mono and bimetallic (Au-Ag) alloy nanoparticles

Recently, the design and biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) have drawn immense interest, but their very specific function and secondary toxic effects are major concern towards commercial application of NPs. That's why environment-friendly (nontoxic) NPs having multiple functions are extremely important. Herein, we report the mechanism of biosynthesis of mono and bimetallic (Au-Ag) alloy NPs and study their multifunctional (antioxidant, antifungal and catalytic) activity and ecotoxicological property. AgNPs exhibit phytotoxicity (at 100 μg/ml) on morphological characteristics of Lentil (during germination), while alloy and AuNPs are non-toxic (up to 100 μg/ml). In-vitro antioxidant response using DPPH methods reveals that alloy NPs (IC₅₀ = 55.8 μg/ml) possesses better antioxidant activity compared to the monometallic NPs (IC₅₀ = 73.6-82.6 μg/ml). In addition, alloy NPs displayed appreciable antifungal efficacy against a plant pathogenic fungus Gloeosporium musarum by structural damage to hyphae and conidia of the fungus. The catalytic performance of NPs for degradation of chlorpyriphos (CP) pesticide reveals that alloy NPs is more efficient in terms of rate constant (k = 0.405 d^-1) and half-life (T₅₀ = 1.71 d) compared to the monometallic counterparts (k = 0.115-0.178 d^-1; T₅₀ = 3.89-6.04 d). Degradation products of CP (3,5,6-trichloropyridinol and diethyl thiophosphate) are confirmed using mass spectrometry and based on that a degradation pathway has been suggested. Thus, these sustainable and ecological safe biogenic (Au-Ag) alloy NPs promise multiple applications as an antioxidant in the pharmaceutical sector, as a fungicide for disease control in agriculture, as a catalyst for remediation of toxic pollutants and in other pertinent areas.

Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Chlorination of Methylene Blue Using a Newly Synthesized TiO2-SiO2 Photocatalyst

The titanium dioxide-silicon dioxide (TiO2-SiO2) nanocomposite used for the study was synthesized using a sol-gel method followed by UV-treatment. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized catalyst, TiO2-SiO2 were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) and photoluminescence (PL). The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye was evaluated in the presence of TiO2-SiO2 and reactive chlorine species (RCS) under experimental conditions. By comparing the important reaction processes in the study, including photocatalysis, chlorination and photocatalytic chlorination, it was found out that the process of photocatalytic chlorination had the highest photodegradation efficiency (95% at 60 min) of the MB under optimum reaction conditions (MB = 6 mg L−1, catalyst = 0.1 g and pH = 4). The enhanced removal of MB from the aqueous medium was identified because of the synergy between chlorination and photocatalysis activated in the presence of TiO2-SiO2. The mechanism of the photocatalytic chlorination process was scrutinized in the presence of various RCS and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers. Based on the experimental data attained, Na2S2O3 exhibited the highest inhibitory effect on the degradation efficiency of MB, indicating that the RCS is the main contributor to visible light-induced photodegradation of MB.

Bioluminescent Models to Evaluate the Efficiency of Light-Based Antibacterial Approaches

The emergence of microbial resistance to antimicrobials among several common pathogenic microbial strains is an increasing problem worldwide. Thus, it is urgent to develop not only new antimicrobial therapeutics to fight microbial infections, but also new effective, rapid, and inexpensive methods to monitor the efficacy of these new therapeutics. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and antimicrobial blue light (aBL) therapy are receiving considerable attention for their antimicrobial potential and represent realistic alternatives to antibiotics. To monitor the photoinactivation process provided by aPDT and aBL, faster and more effective methods are required instead of laborious conventional plating and overnight incubation procedures. Bioluminescent microbial models are very interesting in this context. Light emission from bioluminescent microorganisms is a highly sensitive indication of their metabolic activity and can be used to monitor, in real time, the effects of antimicrobial agents and therapeutics. This chapter reviews the efforts of the scientific community concerning the development of in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo bioluminescent bacterial models and their potential to evaluate the efficiency of aPDT and aBL in the inactivation of bacteria.

Ingeniously designed Silica nanostructures as an exceptional support: Opportunities, potential challenges and future prospects for viable degradation of pesticides

Despite significant advancements in modern agricultural practices, efficient handling of pesticides is a must as they are continuously defiling our terrestrial as well as aquatic life. During the last couple of decades, substantial efforts by various research groups have been devoted to find innovative solutions to remove pesticides from our environment in a greener way. In this regard, functionalized silica nanoparticles (NPs) have gained considerable attention of scientific community due to their notable properties such as amenable design, large surface area as well as fine-tunable and uniform pore structures which make them an ideal material for pesticides removal. The present review aims to proffer current scientific progress attained by silica-based nanostructures as an excellent material for effective removal of noxious agrochemicals. Further, a brief discussion on the synthetic strategies as well as intrinsic benefits associated with different morphologies of silica have also been highlighted in this article. It also summarizes the recent reports on silica assisted degradation of pesticides via enzymatic, chemical as well as advanced oxidation protocols. Additionally, it presents a critical analysis of different support materials for decontamination of our ecosystem. The review concludes with potential challenges, their possible solutions along with key knowledge gaps and future research directions for successful deployment of silica supported materials in degradation of pesticides at commercial scale.

A synthetic wastewater based on Algiers refinery real effluent was prepared and treated using anodic oxidation. Full factorial plan design was used to conduct the statistical analysis of the results. The aim of the study was to assess the interaction between current density (CD) and stirring degree (SD), and quantify their effects on chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and electric energy specific consumption (EESC). With an initial COD of 487 mg/L, pH of 5.5 and 0.05 M of Na₂SO₄ as supporting electrolyte, it was found that a 55 rpm stirring degree variation led to a substantial gain in COD removal and energy consumption: 6% and 8.5 KWh/kg, respectively. Current density was found to have a different effect on removal efficiency within the applied stirring domain, and mass transport coefficient (km) is inversely correlated to energy consumption. A theoretical model describing the process was reviewed and the relation between concentration, hydrodynamics and applied current was emphasized.

In-situ fabrication of novel flower like MoS2/CoTiO3 nanorod heterostructures for the recyclable degradation of ciprofloxacin and bisphenol A under sunlight

Effectual degradation of toxic water contaminants is a crucial step in water purification and designing an efficient semiconductor based hybrid structure photocatalyst is a good approach to achieve this. Benefiting from the combination of semiconductors, a series of novel visible-light active flower-like MoS₂/CoTiO₃ nanorod heterostructures with excellent morphological contact interface were prepared through a facile in-situ hydrothermal process. These heterostructures were well characterized and demonstrated high photocatalytic performance for ciprofloxacin (CIP) and bisphenol A (BPA) under sunlight irradiation. Compared to pristine CoTiO₃ and MoS₂, the optimal catalyst (5 wt% MoS₂/CoTiO₃) presented 39.97 and 22.32 times higher activity for CIP degradation and 26.85 and 15.66 times higher activity for BPA degradation, respectively. This improved activity can be accounted for the effective interfacial contact which promotes the efficient charge carriers separation and reduce its recombination. The catalyst exhibited decent stability and was potentially reused for five cycles without significant loss in activity. Furthermore, based on active species scavenging experiments the plausible photodegradation mechanism is discussed in detail.

"pySiRC": Machine Learning Combined with Molecular Fingerprints to Predict the Reaction Rate Constant of the Radical-Based Oxidation Processes of Aqueous Organic Contaminants

We developed a web application structured in a machine learning and molecular fingerprint algorithm for the automatic calculation of the reaction rate constant of the oxidative processes of organic pollutants by ^•OH and SO₄^•- radicals in the aqueous phase-the pySiRC platform. The model development followed the OECD principles: internal and external validation, applicability domain, and mechanistic interpretation. Three machine learning algorithms combined with molecular fingerprints were evaluated, and all the models resulted in high goodness-of-fit for the training set with R² > 0.931 for the ^•OH radical and R² > 0.916 for the SO₄^•- radical and good predictive capacity for the test set with R_ext² = Q_ext² values in the range of 0.639-0.823 and 0.767-0.824 for the ^•OH and SO₄^•- radicals. The model was interpreted using the SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) method: the results showed that the model developed made the prediction based on a reasonable understanding of how electron-withdrawing and -donating groups interfere with the reactivity of the ^•OH and SO₄^•- radicals. We hope that our models and web interface can stimulate and expand the application and interpretation of kinetic research on contaminants in water treatment units based on advanced oxidative technologies.

Fe-based single-atom catalysis for oxidizing contaminants of emerging concern by activating peroxides

We prepared a single-atom Fe catalyst supported on an oxygen-doped, nitrogen-rich carbon support (SAFe-OCN) for degrading a broad spectrum of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) by activating peroxides such as peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In the SAFe-OCN/PMS system, most selected CECs were amenable to degradation and high-valent Fe species were present for oxidation. Moreover, SAFe-OCN showed excellent performance for contaminant degradation in complex water matrices and high stability in oxidation. Specifically, SAFe-OCN, with a catalytic center of Fe coordinated with both nitrogen and oxygen (FeN_xO_4-x), showed 5.13-times increased phenol degradation kinetics upon activating PMS compared to the catalyst where Fe was only coordinated with nitrogen (FeN₄). Molecular simulations suggested that FeN_xO_4-x, compared to FeN₄, was an excellent multiple-electron donor and it could potential-readily form high-valent Fe species upon oxidation. In summary, the single-atom Fe catalyst enables efficient, robust, and sustainable water and wastewater treatment, and molecular simulations highlight that the electronic nature of Fe could play a key role in determining the activity of the single-atom catalyst.

Critical review of advanced oxidation processes in organic wastewater treatment

With the development of industrial society, organic wastewater produced by industrial manufacturing has caused many environmental problems. The vast majority of organic pollutants in water bodies are persistent in the environment, posing a threat to human and animal health. Therefore, efficient treatment methods for highly concentrated organic wastewater are urgently needed. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely noticed in the area of treating organic wastewater. Compared with other chemical methods, AOPs have the characteristics of high oxidation efficiency and no secondary pollution. In this paper, the mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of AOPs are comprehensively reviewed. Besides, the basic principles of combining different AOPs to enhance the treatment efficiency are described. Furthermore, the applications of AOPs in various wastewater treatments, such as oily wastewater, dyeing wastewater, pharmaceutical wastewater, and landfill leachate, are also presented. Finally, we conclude that the main direction in the future of AOPs are the modification of catalysts and the optimization of operating parameters, with the challenges focusing on industrial applications.

Antimicrobial Photodynamic Approach in the Inactivation of Viruses in Wastewater: Influence of Alternative Adjuvants

Pathogenic viruses are frequently present in marine and estuarine waters, due to poor wastewater (WW) treatments, which consequently affect water quality and human health. Chlorination, one of the most common methods used to ensure microbiological safety in tertiarily treated effluents, may lead to the formation of toxic chemical disinfection by-products on reaction with organic matter present in the effluents. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) can be a promising disinfecting approach for the inactivation of pathogens, without the formation of known toxic by-products. Additionally, some studies have reported the potentiator effect on aPDT of some compounds, such as potassium iodide (KI) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In the present study, the aPDT efficiency of a PS formulation constituted of five cationic porphyrins (Form) in the inactivation of E. coli T4-like bacteriophage, a model of mammalian viruses, in different aqueous matrices with different organic matter content, was evaluated. Photoinactivation studies were performed at different concentrations of Form and in the presence of the adjuvants KI and H2O2. The results showed that the efficiency of bacteriophage photoinactivation is correlated with the Form concentration, the amount of the organic matter in WW, and the adjuvant type. Form can be an effective alternative to controlling viruses in WW, particularly if combined with H2O2, allowing to significantly reduce PS concentration and treatment time. When combined with KI, the Form is less effective in inactivating T4-like bacteriophage in WW.

Application of TiO2-Based Photocatalysts to Antibiotics Degradation: Cases of Sulfamethoxazole, Trimethoprim and Ciprofloxacin

The extensive application of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine has led to their widespread occurrence in a natural aquatic environment. Global health crisis is associated with the fast development of antimicrobial resistance, as more and more infectious diseases cannot be treated more than once. Sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim and ciprofloxacin are the most commonly detected antibiotics in water systems worldwide. The persistent and toxic nature of these antibiotics makes their elimination by conventional treatment methods at wastewater treatment plants almost impossible. The application of advanced oxidation processes and heterogeneous photocatalysis over TiO2-based materials is a promising solution. This highly efficient technology has the potential to be sustainable, cost-efficient and energy-efficient. A comprehensive review on the application of various TiO2-based photocatalysts for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim and ciprofloxacin is focused on highlighting their photocatalytic performance under various reaction conditions (different amounts of pollutant and photocatalyst, pH, light source, reaction media, presence of inorganic ions, natural organic matter, oxidants). Mineralization efficiency and ecotoxicity of final products have been also considered. Further research needs have been presented based on the literature findings. Among them, design and development of highly efficient under sunlight, stable, recyclable and cost-effective TiO2-based materials; usage of real wastewaters for photocatalytic tests; and compulsory assessment of products ecotoxicity are the most important research tasks in order to meet requirements for industrial application.
