Plasmonic nanoparticle sensors: current progress, challenges, and future prospects

Plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) have played a significant role in the evolution of modern nanoscience and nanotechnology in terms of colloidal synthesis, general understanding of nanocrystal growth mechanisms, and their impact in a wide range of applications. They exhibit strong visible colors due to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) that depends on their size, shape, composition, and the surrounding dielectric environment. Under resonant excitation, the LSPR of plasmonic NPs leads to a strong field enhancement near their surfaces and thus enhances various light-matter interactions. These unique optical properties of plasmonic NPs have been used to design chemical and biological sensors. Over the last few decades, colloidal plasmonic NPs have been greatly exploited in sensing applications through LSPR shifts (colorimetry), surface-enhanced Raman scattering, surface-enhanced fluorescence, and chiroptical activity. Although colloidal plasmonic NPs have emerged at the forefront of nanobiosensors, there are still several important challenges to be addressed for the realization of plasmonic NP-based sensor kits for routine use in daily life. In this comprehensive review, researchers of different disciplines (colloidal and analytical chemistry, biology, physics, and medicine) have joined together to summarize the past, present, and future of plasmonic NP-based sensors in terms of different sensing platforms, understanding of the sensing mechanisms, different chemical and biological analytes, and the expected future technologies. This review is expected to guide the researchers currently working in this field and inspire future generations of scientists to join this compelling research field and its branches.

Effect of wavelength and liquid on formation of Ag, Au, Ag/Au nanoparticles via picosecond laser ablation and SERS-based detection of DMMP

The present study investigates the effects of input wavelength (1064, 532, and 355 nm) and surrounding liquid environment (distilled water and aqueous NaCl solution) on the picosecond laser ablation on silver (Ag), gold (Au), and Ag/Au alloy targets. The efficacy of the laser ablation technique was meticulously evaluated by analyzing the ablation rates, surface plasmon resonance peak positions, and particle size distributions of the obtained colloids. The nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized using the techniques of UV-visible absorption, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Furthermore, NPs of various sizes ranging from 6 to 35 nm were loaded onto a filter paper by a simple and effective drop-casting approach to achieve flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates/sensors. These substrates were tested using a simple, portable Raman device to identify various hazardous chemicals (malachite green, methyl salicylate, and thiram). The stability of the substrates was also systematically investigated by determining the decay percentages in the SERS signals over 60 days. The optimized SERS substrate was subsequently employed to detect chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulants such as methyl salicylate (a CWA simulant for sulfur mustard) and dimethyl methyl phosphonate (has some structural similarities to the G-series nerve agents) at different laser excitations (325, 532, and 633 nm). A notably higher SERS efficiency for CWA simulants was observed at a 325 nm Raman excitation. Our findings reveal that a higher ablation yield was observed at IR irradiation than those obtained at the other wavelengths. A size decrease of the NPs was noticed by changing the liquid environment to an electrolyte. These findings have significant implications for developing more efficient and stable SERS substrates for chemical detection applications.

Using Femtosecond Laser Pulses to Explore the Nonlinear Optical Properties of Ag/Au Alloy Nanoparticles Synthesized by Pulsed Laser Ablation in a Liquid

Metallic nanoparticles have gained attention in technological fields, particularly photonics. The creation of silver/gold (Ag/Au) alloy NPs upon laser exposure of an assembly of these NPs was described. First, using the Nd: YAG pulsed laser ablation's second harmonic at the same average power and exposure time, Ag and Au NPs in distilled water were created individually. Next, the assembly of Ag and Au NP colloids was exposed again to the pulsed laser, and the effects were examined at different average powers and exposure times. Furthermore, Ag/Au alloy nanoparticles were synthesized with by raising the average power and exposure time. The absorption spectrum, average size, and shape of alloy NPs were obtained by using an ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer and transmission electron microscope instrument. Ag/Au alloy NPs have been obtained in the limit of quantum dots (<10 nm). The optical band gap energies of the Ag/Au alloy colloidal solutions were assessed for different Ag/Au alloy NP concentrations and NP sizes as a function of the exposure time and average power. The experimental data showed a trend toward an increasing bandgap with decreasing nanoparticle size. The nonlinear optical characteristics of Ag/Au NPs were evaluated and measured by the Z-scan technique using high repetition rate (80 MHz), femtosecond (100 fs), and near-infrared (NIR) (750-850 nm) laser pulses. In open aperture (OA) Z-scan measurements, Ag, Au, and Ag/AuNPs present reverse saturation absorption (RSA) behavior, indicating a positive nonlinear absorption (NLA) coefficient. In the close-aperture (CA) measurements, the nonlinear refractive (NLR) indices (n2) of the Ag, Au, and Ag/Au NP samples were ascribed to the self-defocusing effect, indicating an effective negative nonlinearity for the nanoparticles. The NLA and NLR characteristics of the Ag/Au NPs colloids were found to be influenced by the incident power and excitation wavelength. The optical limiting (OL) effects of the Ag/Au alloy solution at various excitation wavelengths were studied. The OL effect of alloy NPs is greater than that of monometallic NPs. The Ag/Au bimetallic nanoparticles were found to be more suitable for optical-limiting applications.

Selective SERS Detection of TATB Explosives Based on Hydroxy-Terminal Nanodiamond-Multilayer Graphene Substrate

Selective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of target explosives with good reproducibility is very important for monitoring soldiers' health and ecological environment. Here, the specific charge transfer pathway was constructed between a stable nanodiamond-multilayer graphene (MGD) film substrate and the target explosives. Two-step wet chemical oxidation methods of H2O2 (30%) and HNO3 (65%) solutions were used to regulate the terminal structure of MGD films. The experimental results showed that the hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups are successfully modified on the surface of MGD thin films, and the MGD-OH substrates having good selectivity for 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) explosive in mixed solutions of the TATB, 2,2-dinitroethene-1,1-diamine, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, and 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine explosives compared with MGD substrates were demonstrated. Finally, first-principles density functional theory simulations revealed that the SERS enhancement of the MGD-OH substrate is mainly attributed to the transferred electrons between the -NO2 groups of TATB and the -OH groups of the MGD-OH substrate.

Green waste immobilized Ag/Cu feather like Bi-matrix on garment dye decomposes and their bio-efficacy

This paper describes a simple phyto-remediation of feather-like silver/copper bi-matrix (BMs) was constructed by employing pommagrant waste peel (PWP) extract as crucial role of reducing agent and chelating agents. Numerous strategies, including UV-Visible, XRD, SEM-EDX, and TEM and BET isotherm were used to analysis the optical, structural, surface area and functional properties. Ag/Cu BPNMs of TEM characterization shows feather-like architectural features with constrained size and shape. The Ag/Cu co-catalytic nanoparticles have a particle size of 34-64 nm. The photocatalytic efficiency of Ag/Cu BMs was investigated using a garment dye, Congo red (CR), at successive time intervals under halogen lamp exposure. For Ag/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles, the photocatalytic degradation rate was recorded to be 100% after 40 min which is caused by adsorption of Congo red dye molecules on Ag/Cu and their degradation by reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS are free hydroxyl radicals such as •OH and O2• ions that have high oxidizing capacity. The developed Ag/Cu BMs shown effective bacteriostatic action against many infections.

Synergistic antibacterial mechanism of silver-copper bimetallic nanoparticles

The excessive use of antibiotics in clinical settings has resulted in the rapid expansion, evolution, and development of bacterial and microorganism resistance. It causes a significant challenge to the medical community. Therefore, it is important to develop new antibacterial materials that could replace traditional antibiotics. With the advancements in nanotechnology, it has become evident that metallic and metal oxide nanoparticles (MeO NPs) exhibit stronger antibacterial properties than their bulk and micron-sized counterparts. The antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) have been extensively studied, including the release of metal ions, oxidative stress responses, damages to cell integrity, and immunostimulatory effects. However, it is crucial to consider the potential cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of Ag NPs and Cu NPs. Numerous experimental studies have demonstrated that bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) composed of Ag NPs and Cu NPs exhibit strong antibacterial effects while maintaining low cytotoxicity. Bimetallic nanoparticles offer an effective means to mitigate the genotoxicity associated with individual nanoparticles while considerably enhancing their antibacterial efficacy. In this paper, we presented on various synthesis methods for Ag-Cu NPs, emphasizing their synergistic effects, processes of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, photocatalytic properties, antibacterial mechanisms, and the factors influencing their performance. These materials have the potential to enhance efficacy, reduce toxicity, and find broader applications in combating antibiotic resistance while promoting public health.

Fast and easy synthesis of silver, copper, and bimetallic nanoparticles on cellulose paper assisted by ultrasound

This work focuses on a systematic method to produce Ag, Cu, and Ag/Cu metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in situ assisted with ultrasound on cellulose paper. By tuning the concentration of AgNO3 and CuSO4 salt precursors and ultrasound time, combined with a fixed concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent, it was possible to control the size, morphology, and polydispersity of the resulting MNPs on cellulose papers. Notably, high yield and low polydispersity of MNPs and bimetallic nanoparticles are achieved by increasing the sonication time on paper samples pre-treated with salt precursors before reduction with AA. Moreover, mechanical analysis on paper samples presenting well-dispersed and distributed MNPs showed slightly decreasing values of Young's modulus compared to neat papers. The strain at break is substantially improved in papers containing solely Ag or Cu MNPs. The latter suggests that the elastic/plastic transition and deformation of papers are tuned by cellulose and MNPs interfacial interaction, as indicated by mechanical analysis. The proposed method provides insights into each factor affecting the sonochemistry in situ synthesis of MNPs on cellulose papers. In addition, it offers a straightforward alternative to scale up the production of MNPs on paper, ensuring an eco-friendly method.

Femtosecond laser ablation in liquid synthesis of iron-oxidation nanoparticles with saturable absorption performance

"Naked" ferroferric-oxide nanoparticles (FONPs) synthesized by a femtosecond laser ablation on a bulk stainless steel in liquid were applied to the Nd: YVO₄ laser to achieve passive Q-switched pulse laser output. Without the pollution of ligand, the inherent light characteristic of "naked" FONPs was unaffected. The analysis of the morphological characteristics, dominant chemical elements, and phase composition of the FONPs showed that they were mainly composed of Fe₃O₄, which was spherical with an average diameter of 40 nm. The electron transition and orbital splitting of the iron element's octahedral center position under the laser-driven were considered the primary mechanisms of saturable absorption of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles.

Deep learning approach to overcome signal fluctuations in SERS for efficient On-Site trace explosives detection

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an improved Raman spectroscopy technique to identify the analyte under study uniquely. At the laboratory scale, SERS has realised a huge potential to detect trace analytes with promising applications across multiple disciplines. However, onsite detection with SERS is still limited, given the unwanted glitches of signal reliability and blinking. SERS has inherent signal fluctuations due to multiple factors such as analyte adsorption, inhomogeneous distribution of hotspots, molecule orientation etc. making it a stochastic process. Given these signal fluctuations, validating a signal as a representation of the analyte often relies on an expert's knowledge. Here we present a neural network-aided SERS model (NNAS) without expert interference to efficiently identify reliable SERS spectra of trace explosives (tetryl and picric acid) and a dye molecule (crystal violet). The model uses the signal-to-noise ratio approach to label the spectra as representative (RS) and non-representative (NRS), eliminating the reliability of the expert. Further, experimental conditions were systematically varied to simulate general variations in SERS instrumentation, and a deep-learning model was trained. The model has been validated with a validation set followed by out-of-sample testing with an accuracy of 98% for all the analytes. We believe this model can efficiently bridge the gap between laboratory and on-site detection using SERS.

Structural evolution under physical and chemical stimuli of metastable Au-Fe nanoalloys obtained by laser ablation in liquid

Metastable alloy nanoparticles are investigated for their variety of appealing properties exploitable for photonics, magnetism, catalysis and nanobiotechnology. Notably, nanophases out of thermodynamic equilibrium feature a complex "ultrastructure" leading to a dynamic evolution of composition and atomic arrangement in response to physical-chemical stimuli. In this manuscript, metastable Au-Fe alloy nanoparticles were produced by laser ablation in liquid, an emerging versatile synthetic approach for freezing multielement nanosystems in non-equilibrium conditions. The Au-Fe nanoalloys were characterized through electron microscopy, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The dynamics of the structure of the Au-Fe system was tracked at high temperature under vacuum and atmospheric conditions, evidencing the intrinsic transformative nature of the metastable nanoalloy produced by laser ablation in liquid. This dynamic structure is relevant to possible application in several fields, from photocatalysis to nanomedicine, as demonstrated through an experiment of magnetic resonance imaging in biological fluids.

Multigram-Scale Production of Hybrid Au-Si Nanomaterial by Laser Ablation in Liquid (LAL) for Temperature-Feedback Optical Nanosensing, Light-to-Heat Conversion, and Anticounterfeit Labeling

Recent progress in hybrid optical nanomaterials composed of dissimilar constituents permitted an improvement in the performance and functionality of novel devices developed for optoelectronics, catalysis, medical diagnostics, and sensing. However, the rational combination of contrasting materials such as noble metals and semiconductors within individual hybrid nanostructures via a ready-to-use and lithography-free fabrication approach is still a challenge. Here, we report on a two-step synthesis of hybrid Au-Si microspheres generated by laser ablation of silicon in isopropanol followed by laser irradiation of the produced Si nanoparticles in the presence of HAuCl₄. Thermal reduction of [AuCl₄]^- species to a metallic gold phase, along with its subsequent mixing with silicon under laser irradiation, creates a nanostructured material with a unique composition and morphology, as revealed by electron microscopy, tomography, and elemental analysis. A combination of basic plasmonic and nanophotonic materials such as gold and silicon within a single microsphere allows for efficient light-to-heat conversion, as well as single-particle SERS sensing with temperature-feedback modality and expanded functionality. Moreover, the characteristic Raman signal and hot-electron-induced nonlinear photoluminescence coexisting within the novel Au-Si hybrids, as well as the commonly criticized randomness of the nanomaterials prepared by laser ablation in liquid, were proved to be useful for the realization of anticounterfeiting labels based on a physically unclonable function approach.

Wafer-scale Silver Nanodendrites with Homogeneous Distribution of Gold Nanoparticles for Biomolecules Detection

We report the fabrication and demonstrate the superior performance of robust, cost-effective, and biocompatible hierarchical Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated Ag nanodendrites (AgNDs) on a Silicon platform for the trace-level detection of antibiotics (penicillin, kanamycin, and ampicillin) and DNA bases (adenine, cytosine). The hot-spot density dependence studies were explored by varying the AuNPs deposition time. These substrates’ potential and versatility were explored further through the detection of crystal violet, ammonium nitrate, and thiram. The calculated limits of detection for CV, adenine, cytosine, penicillin G, kanamycin, ampicillin, AN, and thiram were 348 pM, 2, 28, 2, 56, 4, 5, and 2 nM, respectively. The analytical enhancement factors were estimated to be ∼10⁷ for CV, ∼10⁶ for the biomolecules, ∼10⁶ for the explosive molecule, and ∼10⁶ for thiram. Furthermore, the stability of these substrates at different time intervals is being reported here with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy/scattering (SERS) data obtained over 120 days.

Machine learning for rapid quantification of trace analyte molecules using SERS and flexible plasmonic paper substrates

Given the intrinsic nature of low reproducibility and signal blinking in the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique, especially while detecting trace/ultra-trace amounts, it remains a major challenge to quantify the analyte under study. Here we present a simple and economically viable, flexible hydrophobic plasmonic filter paper-based SERS substrate for the quantification of two trace analytes [crystal violet (CV) and picric acid (PA)] using machine learning techniques and SERS data. The wettability of the substrate was modified with an easy and low-cost technique of coating it with silicone oil. Gold nanoparticles were synthesized using a femtosecond laser ablation in water technique. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized using UV, TEM, and SEM techniques and subsequently loaded onto filter papers before using them for SERS studies. We have considered the SERS intensities of the analytes at different concentrations with over 900 spectra to train the model. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to reduce the dimensionality and, hence, the complexity of the model. Furthermore, support vector regression was used to quantify the analyte molecules and we achieved an R² error of 0.9629 for CV and 0.9472 for PA. In conjunction with a portable Raman spectrometer and a computation time of less than <10 s, we believe that this is an affordable and rapid method for quantification of analytes using the SERS technique.

Hybrid Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates for the Trace Detection of Ammonium Nitrate, Thiram, and Nile Blue

We report the fabrication and performance evaluation of hybrid surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates involving laser ablation and chemical routes for the trace-level detection of various analyte molecules. Initially, picosecond laser ablation experiments under ambient conditions were performed on pure silver (Ag) and gold (Au) substrates to achieve distinct nanosized features on the surface. The properties of the generated surface features on laser-processed portions of Ag/Au targets were systematically analyzed using UV-visible reflection and field emission scanning electron microscopy studies. Later, hybrid-SERS substrates were achieved by grafting the chemically synthesized Au nanostars on the plain and laser-processed plasmonic targets. Subsequently, we employed these as SERS platforms for the detection of a pesticide (thiram), a molecule used in explosive compositions [ammonium nitrate (AN)], and a dye molecule [Nile blue (NB)]. A comparative SERS study between the Au nanostar-decorated bare glass, silicon, Ag, Au, and laser-processed Ag and Au targets has been established. Our studies and the obtained data have unambiguously determined that laser-processed Ag structures have demonstrated reasonably good enhancements in the Raman signal intensities for distinct analytes among other substrates. Importantly, the fabricated hybrid SERS substrate of "Au nanostar-decorated laser-processed Ag" exhibited up to eight times enhancement in the SERS intensity compared to laser-processed Ag (without nanostars), as well as up to three times enhancement than the Au nanostar-loaded plain Ag substrates. Additionally, the achieved detection limits from the Au nanostar-decorated laser-processed Ag SERS substrate were ∼50 pM, ∼5 nM, and ∼5 μM for NB, thiram, and AN, respectively. The estimated enhancement factors accomplished from the Au nanostar-decorated laser-processed Ag substrate were ∼106, ∼106, and ∼104 for NB, thiram, and AN, respectively.

Optimization mechanism and applications of ultrafast laser machining towards highly designable 3D micro/nano structuring

The optimization mechanism of ultrafast laser machining is introduced. The specific applications of laser processed 3D micro/nano structures in optical, electrochemical and biomedical fields are elaborated, and perspectives are presented.

Electrodeposition of Cu-Ag Alloy Films at n-Si(001) and Polycrystalline Ru Substrates

Electrodeposition of Cu-Ag films from acidic sulfate bath was conducted at n-Si(001) and polycrystalline Ru substrates. Significant nucleation overpotential of 0.4 V is observed with the Cu-Ag bath at n-Si(001) substrate, whereas the electrodeposition of Cu-Ag at Ru substrate is influenced by Ru oxides at the surface. Incomplete coverage of Si substrate by Cu-Ag deposit was observed from the deposition systems without Ag(I), or with 0.1 mM Ag(I), comparing with the compact Cu-Ag film obtained with the deposition bath containing 0.01 mM Ag(I). Layered and faceted Cu-Ag deposit was observed at small Cu deposition overpotential with the Ru substrate. Phase composition of the Cu-Ag deposits at n-Si(001) substrate from electrolyte with various Ag(I) concentrations is examined by XRD. Limited solubility of Ag (0.4 at.%) was observed in fcc-Cu until phase separation occurs. The classical model for nucleation kinetics in electrodeposition was used to examine the potentiostatic transients of the Cu-Ag electrodeposition at n-Si(001) substrate.

Bimetallic Ag-Cu Alloy Microflowers as SERS Substrates with Single-Molecule Detection Limit

Bimetallic Ag-Cu alloy microflowers with tunable surface compositions were fabricated as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates with a limit of detection in the zeptomolar range for the analyte molecule rhodamine 6G (R6G). The substrates were prepared on a glass coverslip through a bottom-up strategy by simple thermolysis of metal-alkyl ammonium halide precursors. The reaction temperature and composition of the alloy were varied sequentially to find out the maximum SERS efficiency from the substrates. While UV-vis spectroscopy was employed to characterize the optical properties of the substrates, the bulk and surface compositions of the microflowers were determined using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, respectively. Also, the structural and morphological characterizations of the substrates were performed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. For alloys, the ED-XRF studies confirmed that the bulk compositions matched with the feed ratio, while the surface compositions were found to be rich in copper in the form of both elementary copper and copper oxide, as revealed by XPS studies. From the efficiency studies for different compositions prepared, it was found that 10% Ag-Cu alloy microflowers produced the maximum SERS intensity for resonant R6G molecules as probes. In fact, R6G evidences a 50-fold enhancement in SERS spectra with 10% alloy microflowers as against pure Ag microflowers. Using 1, 2, 3-benzotriazole as a nonresonant Raman probe, uniform enhancement factors on the order of ≈10⁸ were achieved from different parts of the 10% Ag-Cu alloy microflower. The same substrate showed excellent Raman response for detecting R6G at very low concentrations such as 10 zM, leading to detection and analysis of SERS spectra from a single R6G molecule.

Trace level detection of explosives and pesticides using robust, low-cost, free-standing silver nanoparticles decorated porous silicon

We report results from our extensive studies on the fabrication of ultra-thin, flexible, and cost-effective Ag nanoparticle (NP) coated free-standing porous silicon (FS-pSi) for superior molecular sensing. The FS-pSi has been prepared by adopting a simple wet-etching method. The deposition time of AgNO₃ has been increased to improve the number of hot-spot regions, thereby the sensing abilities are improved efficiently. FESEM images illustrated the morphology of uniformly distributed AgNPs on the pSi surface. Initially, a dye molecule [methylene blue (MB)] was used as a probe to evaluate the sensing capabilities of the substrate using the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique. The detection was later extended towards the sensing of two important explosive molecules [ammonium nitrate (AN), picric acid (PA)], and a pesticide molecule (thiram) clearly demonstrating the versatility of the investigated substrates. The sensitivity was confirmed by estimating the analytical enhancement factor (AEF), which was ∼10⁷ for MB and ∼10⁴ for explosives and pesticides. We have also evaluated the limit of detection (LOD) values in each case, which were found to be 50 nM, 1 µM, 2 µM, and 1 µM, respectively, for MB, PA, AN, and thiram. Undeniably, our detailed SERS results established excellent reproducibility with a low RSD (relative standard deviation). Furthermore, we also demonstrate the reasonable stability of AgNPs decorated pSi by inspecting and studying their SERS performance over a period of 90 days. The overall cost of these substrates is attractive for practical applications on account of the above-mentioned superior qualities.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy aptasensor for simultaneous determination of ochratoxin A and zearalenone using Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles and gold nanorods

The design and fabrication of a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) aptasensor for simultaneous detection of zearalenone (ZEN) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in wheat and corn samples is described. The capture and reporter probes were SH-cDNA-modified gold nanorods and SH-Apt-modified Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles, respectively. After recognizing OTA and ZEN aptamers and complementary strands (SH-cDNA), the reporter probe generated a strong SERS signal. The preferred binding of OTA and ZEN aptamers to OTA and ZEN, respectively, caused reporter probes to release the capture probes, resulting in a linear decrease in SERS intensity. The detection of OTA showed good linearity with an R² value of 0.986, which could be maintained across a wide concentration range (0.01 to 100 ng/mL), with the limit of detection of 0.018 ng/mL. For detection of ZEN, good linearity with an R² value of 0.987 could be maintained across a wide concentration range (0.05 to 500 ng/mL), with 0.054 ng/mL as the limit of detection. Good accuracy (relative standard deviation < 4.2%) during mycotoxin determination as well as excellent quantitative recoveries (96.0-110.7%) during the analysis of spiked real samples was achieved. The proposed SERS aptasensor exhibited excellent performance in the detection of OTA and ZEN in real food samples. Hence, by simply changing the aptamer, this new model can be applied to the detection of multiple mycotoxins in the food industry.

Femtosecond laser patterned superhydrophobic/hydrophobic SERS sensors for rapid positioning ultratrace detection

Ultratrace molecular detections are vital for precancer diagnosis, forensic analysis, and food safety. Superhydrophobic (SH) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors are regarded as an ideal approach to improve detection performance by concentrating analyte molecules within a small volume. However, due to the low adhesion of SH surfaces, the analyte droplet is prone to rolling, making it hard to deposit molecules on a predetermined position. Furthermore, the sediment with a very small area on the SH-SERS surface is difficult to be captured even with a Raman microscope. In this study, femtosecond laser fabricated hybrid SH/hydrophobic (SH/HB) surfaces are successfully applied to realize a rapid and highly sensitive SERS detection. By modulating dual surface structures and wetting behaviors, the analyte molecules can be enriched at the edge of HB pattern. This improves the convenience and speed of Raman test. On a hybrid SH/HB SERS substrate with a circular HB pattern at 300-µm-diameter, a femtomolar level (10^-14 M) of rhodamine 6G can be detected by using analyte volumes of just 5 µL. The SERS enhancement factor can reach 5.7×10⁸ and a good uniformity with a relative standard deviation of 6.98% is achieved. Our results indicate that the laser fabrication of hybrid SERS sensor offers an efficient and cost-effective approach for ultratrace molecular detection.

Kinetically Stable Nonequilibrium Gold-Cobalt Alloy Nanoparticles with Magnetic and Plasmonic Properties Obtained by Laser Ablation in Liquid

Nonequilibrium nanoalloys are metastable solids obtained at the nanoscale under nonequilibrium conditions that allow the study of kinetically frozen atoms and the discovery of new physical and chemical properties. However, the stabilization of metastable phases in the nanometric size regime is challenging and the synthetic route should be easy and sustainable, for the nonequilibrium nanoalloys to be practically available. Here we report on the one-step laser ablation synthesis in solution (LASiS) of nonequilibrium Au-Co alloy nanoparticles (NPs) and their characterization on ensembles and at the single nanoparticle level. The NPs are obtained as a polycrystalline solid solution stable in air and water, although surface cobalt atoms undergo oxidation to Co(II). Since gold is a renowned plasmonic material and metallic cobalt is ferromagnetic at room temperature, these properties are both found in the NPs. Besides, surface conjugation with thiolated molecules is possible and it was exploited to obtain colloidally stable solutions in water. Taking advantage of these features, an array of magnetic-plasmonic dots was obtained and used for surface-enhanced Raman scattering experiments. Overall, this study confirms that LASiS is an effective method for the formation of kinetically stable nonequilibrium nanoalloys and shows that Au-Co alloy NPs are appealing magnetically responsive plasmonic building blocks for several nanotechnological applications.

Ultra-sensitive reusable SERS sensor for multiple hazardous materials detection on single platform

We demonstrate the detection of dipicolinic acid, (DPA), a biomarker of bacterial spores for Bacillus anthracis, 2,4-Dinitrotoluene (DNT) and picric acid (PA) nitroaromatic hazardous chemicals on ultra-sensitive, reusable femtosecond laser textured Au nanostructures decorated with hierarchical AuNPs as a SERS substrate. The AuNPs were achieved by ablating an Au sheet using two different laser scan speeds (1 and 0.1 mm/s) in linear and crossed patterns. The morphological studies revealed dense hierarchical nanostructures decorated with spherical AuNPs possessing 30-40 nm in size in 0.1 mm/s laser scan. The limits of detection (LOD) of the sensor were determined from the detailed SERS measurements and were estimated to be 0.83 pg/L, 3.6 pg/L and 2.3 pg/L for DPA, DNT, and PA, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the achieved sensitivity is nearly 2 orders improved for DPA when compared with the currently reported LODs using other techniques and 1 order in the case of SERS. Moreover, for DNT and PA the LODs were found to be either superior or comparable with recent reports. We have also demonstrated the competence of our SERS substrates by testing a few real samples (water spiked with these analytes) and again obtained very good sensitivity.

How the Physicochemical Properties of the Bulk Material Affect the Ablation Crater Profile, Mass Balance, and Bubble Dynamics During Single-Pulse, Nanosecond Laser Ablation in Water

Understanding the key steps that drive the laser-based synthesis of colloids is a prerequisite for learning how to optimize the ablation process in terms of nanoparticle output and functional design of the nanomaterials. Even though many studies focus on cavitation bubble formation using single-pulse ablation conditions, the ablation efficiency and nanoparticle properties are typically investigated under prolonged ablation conditions with repetition rate lasers. Linking single-pulse and multiple-pulse ablation is difficult due to limitations induced by gas formation cross-effects, which occur on longer timescales and depend on the target materials' oxidation-sensitivity. Therefore, this study investigates the ablation and cavitation bubble dynamics under nanosecond, single laser pulse conditions for six different bulk materials (Au, Ag, Cu, Fe, Ti, and Al). Also, the effective threshold fluences, ablation volumes, and penetration depths are quantified for these materials. The thermal and chemical properties of the corresponding bulk materials not only favor the formation of larger spot sizes but also lead to the highest molar ablation efficiencies for low melting materials such as aluminum. Furthermore, the concept of the cavitation bubble growth linked with the oxidation sensitivity of the ablated material is discussed. With this, evidence is provided that intensive chemical reactions occurring during the very early timescale of ablation are significantly enhanced by the bubble collapse.

Antimicrobial Properties of the Ag, Cu Nanoparticle System

Microbes, including bacteria and fungi, easily form stable biofilms on many surfaces. Such biofilms have high resistance to antibiotics, and cause nosocomial and postoperative infections. The antimicrobial and antiviral behaviors of Ag and Cu nanoparticles (NPs) are well known, and possible mechanisms for their actions, such as released ions, reactive oxygen species (ROS), contact killing, the immunostimulatory effect, and others have been proposed. Ag and Cu NPs, and their derivative NPs, have different antimicrobial capacities and cytotoxicities. Factors, such as size, shape and surface treatment, influence their antimicrobial activities. The biomedical application of antimicrobial Ag and Cu NPs involves coating onto substrates, including textiles, polymers, ceramics, and metals. Because Ag and Cu are immiscible, synthetic AgCu nanoalloys have different microstructures, which impact their antimicrobial effects. When mixed, the combination of Ag and Cu NPs act synergistically, offering substantially enhanced antimicrobial behavior. However, when alloyed in Ag-Cu NPs, the antimicrobial behavior is even more enhanced. The reason for this enhancement is unclear. Here, we discuss these results and the possible behavior mechanisms that underlie them.

Robust and cost-effective silver dendritic nanostructures for SERS-based trace detection of RDX and ammonium nitrate

We report the fabrication and performance evaluation of cost-effective, reproducible silver nanodendrite (AgND) substrates, possessing high-density trunks and branches, achieved by a simple electroless etching process and subsequently utilized them for the trace detection of 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (Research Development Explosive, RDX) and Ammonium Nitrate (AN). The intricate structural features in AgNDs offer high-density hotspots for effective molecular detection based on the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique. The active SERS-substrate was initially tested with standard Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules at 1 nM concentration, which established an effective enhancement factor (EF) of ∼108. The AgNDs were subsequently utilized in the detection of the explosives RDX and AN, down to concentrations of 1 μM. The typical EF achieved in the case of RDX and AN was ∼104. The sensitivity of 1 μM R6G was further enhanced by two-fold through the deposition of Au nanoparticles on the AgNDs. The reproducibility of the low-cost substrate was also demonstrated, with a ∼9% RSD value in the measurements.

Modular and Integrated Systems for Nanoparticle and Microparticle Synthesis-A Review

Nanoparticles (NPs) and microparticles (MPs) have been widely used in different areas of research such as materials science, energy, and biotechnology. On-demand synthesis of NPs and MPs with desired chemical and physical properties is essential for different applications. However, most of the conventional methods for producing NPs/MPs require bulky and expensive equipment, which occupies large space and generally need complex operation with dedicated expertise and labour. These limitations hinder inexperienced researchers to harness the advantages of NPs and MPs in their fields of research. When problems individual researchers accumulate, the overall interdisciplinary innovations for unleashing a wider range of directions are undermined. In recent years, modular and integrated systems are developed for resolving the ongoing dilemma. In this review, we focus on the development of modular and integrated systems that assist the production of NPs and MPs. We categorise these systems into two major groups: systems for the synthesis of (1) NPs and (2) MPs; systems for producing NPs are further divided into two sections based on top-down and bottom-up approaches. The mechanisms of each synthesis method are explained, and the properties of produced NPs/MPs are compared. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and outline the potentials for the development of modular and integrated systems.

Recent Developments in the Field of Explosive Trace Detection

Explosive trace detection (ETD) technologies play a vital role in maintaining national security. ETD remains an active research area with many analytical techniques in operational use. This review details the latest advances in animal olfactory, ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), and Raman and colorimetric detection methods. Developments in optical, biological, electrochemical, mass, and thermal sensors are also covered in addition to the use of nanomaterials technology. Commercially available systems are presented as examples of current detection capabilities and as benchmarks for improvement. Attention is also drawn to recent collaborative projects involving government, academia, and industry to highlight the emergence of multimodal screening approaches and applications. The objective of the review is to provide a comprehensive overview of ETD by highlighting challenges in ETD and providing an understanding of the principles, advantages, and limitations of each technology and relating this to current systems.

Polarization-Sensitive Surface-Enhanced In Situ Photoluminescence Spectroscopy of S. aureus Bacteria on Gold Nanospikes

We report the possibility of a time-resolved bacterial live/dead dynamics observation with the use of plasmonic nanospikes. Sharp nanospikes, fabricated on a 500-nm thick gold film by laser ablation with the use of 1030-nm femtosecond pulses, were tested as potential elements for antibacterial surfaces and plasmonic luminescence sensors. Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were stained by a live/dead viability kit, with the dead microorganisms acquiring the red colour, caused by the penetration of the luminescent dye propidium iodide through the damaged cell membrane. Photoluminescence was pumped by 515-nm femtosecond laser pulses with linear (Gaussian beam), circular, azimuthal and radial (Laguerre-Gaussian beam) polarizations, exciting the transverse plasmon resonance of the nanospikes and their apex lightning-rod near-field. According to the numerical electrodynamic modeling, the observed strong increase in the photoluminescence yield for radial polarization, while slightly lower for circular and azimuthal polarizations, compared with the low luminescence intensities for the linear laser polarization, was related to their different laser-nanospike coupling efficiencies.

Surface enhanced Raman scattering substrate for the detection of explosives: Construction strategy and dimensional effect

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology has been reported to be able to quickly and non-destructively identify target analytes. SERS substrate with high sensitivity and selectivity gave SERS technology a broad application prospect. This contribution aims to provide a detailed and systematic review of the current state of research on SERS-based explosive sensors, with particular attention to current research advances. This review mainly focuses on the strategies for improving SERS performance and the SERS substrates with different dimensions including zero-dimensional (0D) nanocolloids, one-dimensional (1D) nanowires and nanorods, two-dimensional (2D) arrays, and three-dimensional (3D) networks. The effects of elemental composition, the shape and size of metal nanoparticles, hot-spot structure and surface modification on the performance of explosive detection are also reviewed. In addition, the future development tendency and application of SERS-based explosive sensors are prospected.

Instantaneous trace detection of nitro-explosives and mixtures with nanotextured silicon decorated with Ag-Au alloy nanoparticles using the SERS technique

The development of recyclable surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based sensors has been in huge demand for trace level explosives detection. A simple, hybrid Silicon (Si) nanotextured target-based SERS platform is fabricated through patterning micro square arrays (MSA) on Si using femtosecond (fs) laser ablation technique at different fluences. Using the hybrid target Si MSA substrate loaded/decorated with Ag-Au alloy NPs (obtained using femtosecond ablation in liquids) we demonstrate the trace level detection of organic nitro-explosives [picric acid (PA), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), and 1, 3, 5-trinitroperhydro-1, 3, 5-triazine (RDX)] and their mixtures. The microstructures/nanostructures of MSA fabricated at an input fluence of 9.55 J/cm², and decorated with Ag-Au alloy NPs, exhibited exceptional SERS enhancement factors (EFs) up to ∼10¹⁰ for MB, ∼10⁶ for PA, and ∼10⁴ for RDX with the detection limits obtained being ∼5 pM, ∼36 nM, and ∼400 nM for MB, PA and RDX respectively. Furthermore, we demonstrate these SERS substrates possess good reproducibility (RSD values < 15%) and a superior performance compared to a commercial Ag substrate (SERSitive, Poland). Three binary mixtures, i.e. MB-PA, MB-DNT, PA-DNT at different concentrations, were also investigated using the same SERS substrate to test the efficacy. Further, the SERS spectra of dyes, explosives, and complex mixtures were utilized for discrimination/classification using principal component analysis.

SERS based detection of multiple analytes from dye/explosive mixtures using picosecond laser fabricated gold nanoparticles and nanostructures

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a cutting edge analytical tool for trace analyte detection due to its highly sensitive, non-destructive and fingerprinting capability. Herein, we report the detection of multiple analytes from various mixtures using gold nanoparticles (NPs) and nanostructures (NSs) as SERS platforms. NPs and NSs were achieved through the simple approach of laser ablation in liquids (LAL) and their morphological studies were conducted with a UV-Visible absorption spectrometer, a high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The fabricated NPs/NSs allowed the sensitive and selective detection of different mixed compounds containing (i) rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) and methylene blue (MB), (ii) crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG), (iii) picric acid (explosive) and MB (dye), (iv) picric acid and 3-nitro-1,2,4- triazol-5-one (explosive, NTO) and (v) picric acid and 2,4-dinitrotoluene (explosive, DNT) using a portable Raman spectrometer. Thus, the obtained results demonstrate the capability of fabricated SERS substrates in identifying explosives and dyes from various mixtures. This could pave a new way for simultaneous detection of multiple analytes in real field applications.
