Efficient Dienyl End-Capping of Ruthenium Catalyzed Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization with Allyl Compounds through Base-Promoted Metallacyclobutane Decomposition

Herein we demonstrate an effective and facile end-capping technique for ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using readily available allyl compounds as a new type of terminating agents. This new type of end-capping reactions, which are based on the base-promoted decomposition of ruthenocyclobutane intermediates, introduce diene moiety onto the chain end of ROMP polymers while simultaneously deactivating the ruthenium complex. These termination reactions are highly efficient, typically completing within 1 minute at 0 °C with >95 % end-capping fidelity.

Robust Multifunctional Ultrathin 2 Nanometer Organic Nanofibers

Ultrathin organic nanofibers (UTONFs) represent an emerging class of nanomaterials as they carry a set of favorable attributes, including ultrahigh specific surface area, lightweight, and mechanical flexibility, over inorganic counterparts, for use in biomedicine and nanotechnology. However, precise synthesis of uniform UTONFs (diameter ≤ 2 nm) with tailored functionalities remained challenging. Herein, we report robust multifunctional UTONFs using hydrophobic interaction-driven self-assembly of amphiphilic alternating peptoids containing hydrophobic photoresponsive azobenzene and hydrophilic hydroxyl moieties periodically arranged along the peptoid backbone. Notably, the as-crafted UTONFs are approximately 2 nm in diameter and tens of micrometers in length (an aspect ratio, AR, of ∼10000), exemplifying the UTONFs with the smallest diameter yielded via self-assembly. Intriguingly, UTONFs were disassembled into short-segmented nanofibers and controllably reassembled into UTONFs, resembling "step-growth polymerization". Photoisomerization of azobenzene moieties leads to reversible transformation between UTONFs and spherical micelles. Such meticulously engineered UTONFs demonstrate potential for catalysis, bioimaging, and antibacterial therapeutics. Our study highlights the significance of the rational design of amphiphiles containing alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties in constructing otherwise unattainable extremely thin UTONFs with ultrahigh AR and stimuli-responsive functionalities for energy and bionanotechnology.

Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity of Bismuth Ferrite Hollow Spheres Synthesized via Evaporation-Induced Self-Assembly

Semiconductor hollow spheres have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their unique structural properties and enhanced surface area, which are advantageous for various applications in catalysis, energy storage, and sensing. The present study explores the surfactant-assisted synthesis of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) hollow spheres, emphasizing their enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity. Utilizing a novel, facile, two-step evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) approach, monodisperse BiFeO3 hollow spheres were synthesized with a narrow particle size distribution. The synthesis involved Bi/Fe citrate complexes as precursors and the triblock copolymer Pluronic P123 as a soft template. The BiFeO3 hollow spheres demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic performance in degrading the emerging pollutants Rhodamine B and metronidazole under visible-light irradiation (100% degradation of Rhodamine B in <140 min and of metronidazole in 240 min). The active species in the photocatalytic process were identified through trapping experiments, providing crucial insights into the mechanisms and efficiency of semiconductor hollow spheres. The findings suggest that the unique structural features of BiFeO3 hollow spheres, combined with their excellent optical properties, make them promising candidates for photocatalytic applications.

One-step synthesis of amphiphilic copolymers PDMS-b-PEG using tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane and subsequent study of encapsulation and release of curcumin

A series of amphiphilic block copolymer (BCP) micelles based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were synthesized by a one-step reaction in the presence of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) as a catalyst. The structural composition of PDMS-b-PEG (PR11) and PEG-b-PDMS-b-PEG (PR12) was corroborated by FTIR, 29Si NMR, and TGA. The BCPs were assembled in an aqueous solution, obtaining micelles between 57 and 87 nm in size. PR11 exhibited a higher (2.0 g L-1) critical micelle concentration (CMC) than PR12 (1.5 g L-1) due to the short chain length. The synthesized nano micelles were used to encapsulate curcumin, which is one of three compounds of turmeric plant 'Curcuma longa' with significant biological activities, including antioxidant, chemoprotective, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-depressant properties. The encapsulation efficiency of curcumin was 60% for PR11 and 45% for PR12. Regarding the release study, PR11 delivered 53% curcumin after five days under acidic conditions (pH of 1.2) compared to 43% at a pH of 7.4. The degradation products of curcumin were observed under basic conditions and were more stable at acidic pH. In both situations, the release process is carried out by breaking the silyl-ether bond, allowing the release of curcumin. PR11 showed prolonged release times, so it could be used to reduce ingestion times and simultaneously work as a nanocarrier for other hydrophobic drugs.

Chemically Nanostructured Organogel Monoliths from Cross-Linked Block Copolymers for Selective Infusion Templating

Soft gels with spatially defined mesoscale distributions of chemical activity that guide and accelerate reactions by chemical nanoconfinement are found ubiquitously in nature but are rare in artificial systems. In this study, we introduce chemically nanostructured bulk organogels with periodically ordered morphologies from self-assembled block copolymer monoliths with a single selectively cross-linked block (xBCP). Ordered bulk organogels are fabricated with various distinct morphologies including hexagonally packed cylinders and two gyroidal three-dimensionally periodic network structures that exhibit macroscopic and nanoscopic structural integrity upon swelling. Small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy confirm that the periodic arrangement of the chemically distinct blocks in the self-assembled xBCP is retained at polymer fractions as low as 15 vol %. Our results reveal that the swelling equilibrium is not exclusively determined by the cross-linked block despite its structural role but is strongly influenced by the weighted interactions between solvent and the individual nanophases, including the non-cross-linked blocks. Therefore, substantial swelling can be obtained even for solvents that the cross-linked block itself has unfavorable interactions with. Since these ordered organogels present a class of solvent-laden bulk materials that exhibit chemically distinct nanoenvironments on a periodic mesoscale lattice, we demonstrate their use for selective infusion templating (SIT) in a proof-of-concept nanoconfined synthesis of poly(acrylonitrile) from which a monolithic ordered gyroidal mesoporous carbon is obtained. Going forward, we envision using xBCP gels and SIT to enable the fabrication of traditionally hard-to-template materials as periodically nanostructured monoliths due to the extensive tunability in their physicochemical parameter space.

Polyphenol-Based Bicontinuous Porous Spheres Via Amine-Mediated Polymerization-Induced Fusion Assembly

Bicontinuous porous materials, which possess 3D interconnected network and pore channels facilitating the mass diffusion to the interior of materials, have demonstrated their promising potentials in a large variety of research fields. However, facile construction of such complex and delicate structures is still challenging. Here, an amine-mediated polymerization-induced fusion assembly strategy is reported for synthesizing polyphenol-based bicontinuous porous spheres with various pore structures. Specifically, the fusion of pore-generating template observed by TEM promotes the development of bicontinuous porous networks that are confirmed by 3D reconstruction. Furthermore, the resultant bicontinuous porous carbon particles after pyrolysis, with a diameter of ≈600 nm, a high accessible surface area of 359 m2 g-1, and a large pore size of 40-150 nm manifest enhanced performance toward the catalytic degradation of sulfamethazine in water decontamination. The present study expands the toolbox of interfacial tension-solvent-dependent porous spheres while providing new insight into their structure-property relationships.

Modulation of excited state intramolecular proton transfer and intramolecular charge transfer pathways of symmetrical azines through micellar medium

The photophysical studies of fluorescent probes in micellar medium can give a better insight about their interaction with biological membranes. This study attempts to access the photophysical properties of the dual emitting azine based probe diethylamino salicylidene azine dimer (DEASAD) in micellar media. DEASAD showed dual charge transfer emission due to the presence of open enol (480 nm) and closed enol (510 nm) forms in polar protic solvents. Upon increasing the concentration of ionic surfactants, there is a significant increase in the emission intensity of both the enol forms of DEASAD until premicellar concentration. After micellization, occurrence of a new anomalous keto form emission through excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) was observed around 530 nm in ionic micelles and its intensity changes depend on the micellar surface charge. The emission studies revealed the position and interaction of DEASAD with the charge of micellar stern layer as confirmed through interaction of metal ion with the probe and control molecules with and without ESIPT and ICT moieties. In contrast, the new anomalous longer wavelength keto form of DEASAD emission was absent in neutral micelles like Triton X-100.

The Hybridization of Polymers with Metal Oxide Clusters for the Design of Non-Fluorinated Proton Exchange Membranes

As the key component of various energy storage and conversion devices, proton exchange membranes (PEMs) have been attracting significant interest. However, their further development is limited by the high cost of perfluorosulfonic acid polymers and the poor stability of acid-dopped non-fluorinated polymers. Recently, a new group of PEMs has been developed by hybridizing polyoxometalates (POMs), a group of super acidic sub-nanoscale metal oxide clusters, with polymers. POMs can serve simultaneously as both proton sponges and stabilizing agents, and their complexation with polymers can further improve polymers' mechanical performance and processability. Enormous efforts have been focused on studying supramolecular complexation or covalent grafting of POMs with various polymers to optimize PEMs in terms of cost, mechanical properties and stabilities. This concept summarizes recent advances in this emerging field and outlines the design strategies and application perspectives employed for using POM-polymer hybrid materials as PEMs.

Protein-polymer bioconjugation, immobilization, and encapsulation: a comparative review towards applicability, functionality, activity, and stability

Polymer-based biomaterials have received a lot of attention due to their biomedical, agricultural, and industrial potential. Soluble protein-polymer bioconjugates, immobilized proteins, and encapsulated proteins have been shown to tune enzymatic activity, improved pharmacokinetic ability, increased chemical and thermal stability, stimuli responsiveness, and introduced protein recovery. Controlled polymerization techniques, increased protein-polymer attachment techniques, improved polymer surface grafting techniques, controlled polymersome self-assembly, and sophisticated characterization methods have been utilized for the development of well-defined polymer-based biomaterials. In this review we aim to provide a brief account of the field, compare these methods for engineering biomaterials, provide future directions for the field, and highlight impacts of these forms of bioconjugation.

Low-Temperature, Universal Synthetic Route for Mesoporous Metal Oxides by Exploiting Synergistic Effect of Thermal Activation and Plasma

Mesoporous metal oxides exhibit excellent physicochemical properties and are widely used in various fields, including energy storage/conversion, catalysis, and sensors. Although several soft-template approaches are reported, high-temperature calcination for both metal oxide formation and template removal is necessary, which limits direct synthesis on a plastic substrate for flexible devices. Here, a universal synthetic approach that combines thermal activation and oxygen plasma to synthesize diverse mesoporous metal oxides (V2O5, V6O13, TiO2, Nb2O5, WO3, and MoO3) at low temperatures (150-200 °C), which can be applicable to a flexible polymeric substrate is introduced. As a demonstration, a flexible micro-supercapacitor is fabricated by directly synthesizing mesoporous V2O5 on an indium-tin oxide-coated colorless polyimide film. The energy storage performance is well maintained under severe bending conditions.

Regulating the Chiroptical Expression of Aggregated Solvophobic Core by Solvophilic Segments

The investigation of chiral supramolecular stacking is of essential significance for the understanding of the origin of homochirality in nature. Unlike structurally well-defined amphiphilic liposomes, it remains unclear whether the solvophilic segments of the amphiphilic block copolymer play a decisive role in the construction of asymmetric superstructures. Herein, insights are presented into the stacking patterns and morphological regulation in azobenzene-containing block copolymer assemblies solely by modulating the solvophilic chain length. The solvophilic poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) segments of different molecular weights could cause multi-mode chirality inversions involving stacking transitions between intra-chain π-π stacking, inter-chain H- and J-aggregation. Furthermore, the length of the solvophilic PMAA also affects the morphology of the chiral supramolecular assemblies; rice grain-like micelles, worms, nanofibers, floccules, and lamellae can be prepared at different solvophilic-solvophobic balance. The comprehensive mechanism is collectively revealed by utilizing various measurement methods, such as including circular dichroism (CD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). This study highlights the critical importance of fully dissolved solvophilic segments for the chiroptical regulation of the aggregated core, providing new insights into the arrangement of chiral supramolecular structures in polymer systems.

Construction of Layer-Blocked Covalent Organic Framework Heterogenous Films via Surface-Initiated Polycondensations with Strongly Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties

Imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) usually show high crystallinity and porosity, while vinyl-linked COFs have excellent semiconducting properties and stability. Therefore, achieving the advantages of imine- and vinyl-linkages in a single COF material is highly interesting but remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of a layer-blocked COF (LB-COF) heterogeneous film that is composed of imine- and vinyl-linkages through two successive surface-initiated polycondensations. In brief, the bottom layer of imine-linked COF film was constructed on an amino-functionalized substrate via Schiff-base polycondensation, in which the unreacted aldehyde edges could be utilized for initiating aldol polycondensation to prepare the second layer of vinyl-linked COF film. The resultant LB-COF film displays excellent ordering due to the crystalline templating effect from the bottom imine-linked COF layer; meanwhile, the upper vinyl-linked COF layer could strongly enhance its stability and photocatalytic properties. The LB COF also presents superior performance in photocatalytic uranium extraction (320 mg g-1), which is higher than the imine-linked (35 mg g-1) and the vinyl-linked (295 mg g-1) counterpart. This study provides a novel surface-initiated strategy to synthesize layer-blocked COF heterogeneous films that combine the advantages of each building block.

From nano- to macroarchitectures: designing and constructing MOF-derived porous materials for persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes

Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) have gained significant attention as an effective approach for the elimination of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in water treatment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives are regarded as promising catalysts for activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) due to their tunable and diverse structure and composition. By the rational nanoarchitectured design of MOF-derived nanomaterials, the excellent performance and customized functions can be achieved. However, the intrinsic fine powder form and agglomeration ability of MOF-derived nanomaterials have limited their practical engineering application. Recently, a great deal of effort has been put into shaping MOFs into macroscopic objects without sacrificing the performance. This review presents recent advances in the design and synthetic strategies of MOF-derived nano- and macroarchitectures for PS-AOPs to degrade EOCs. Firstly, the strategies of preparing MOF-derived diverse nanoarchitectures including hierarchically porous, hollow, yolk-shell, and multi-shell structures are comprehensively summarized. Subsequently, the approaches of manufacturing MOF-based macroarchitectures are introduced in detail. Moreover, the PS-AOP application and mechanisms of MOF-derived nano- and macromaterials as catalysts to eliminate EOCs are discussed. Finally, the prospects and challenges of MOF-derived materials in PS-AOPs are discussed. This work will hopefully guide the design and development of MOF-derived porous materials in SR-AOPs.

Increasing the Accessibility of Internal Catalytic Sites in Covalent Organic Frameworks by Introducing a Bicontinuous Mesostructure

Introducing continuous mesochannels into covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to increase the accessibility of their inner active sites has remained a major challenge. Here, we report the synthesis of COFs with an ordered bicontinuous mesostructure, via a block copolymer self-assembly-guided nanocasting strategy. Three different mesostructured COFs are synthesized, including two covalent triazine frameworks and one vinylene-linked COF. The new materials are endowed with a hierarchical meso/microporous architecture, in which the mesochannels exhibit an ordered shifted double diamond (SDD) topology. The hierarchically porous structure can enable efficient hole-electron separation and smooth mass transport to the deep internal of the COFs and consequently high accessibility of their active catalytic sites. Benefiting from this hierarchical structure, these COFs exhibit excellent performance in visible-light-driven catalytic NO removal with a high conversion percentage of up to 51.4 %, placing them one of the top reported NO-elimination photocatalysts. This study represents the first case of introducing a bicontinuous structure into COFs, which opens a new avenue for the synthesis of hierarchically porous COFs and for increasing the utilization degree of their internal active sites.

Tunable Neuromorphic Switching Dynamics via Porosity Control in Mesoporous Silica Diffusive Memristors

In response to the growing need for efficient processing of temporal information, neuromorphic computing systems are placing increased emphasis on the switching dynamics of memristors. While the switching dynamics can be regulated by the properties of input signals, the ability of controlling it via electrolyte properties of a memristor is essential to further enrich the switching states and improve data processing capability. This study presents the synthesis of mesoporous silica (mSiO2) films using a sol-gel process, which enables the creation of films with controllable porosities. These films can serve as electrolyte layers in the diffusive memristors and lead to tunable neuromorphic switching dynamics. The mSiO2 memristors demonstrate short-term plasticity, which is essential for temporal signal processing. As porosity increases, discernible changes in operating currents, facilitation ratios, and relaxation times are observed. The underlying mechanism of such systematic control was investigated and attributed to the modulation of hydrogen-bonded networks within the porous structure of the silica layer, which significantly influences both anodic oxidation and ion migration processes during switching events. The result of this work presents mesoporous silica as a unique platform for precise control of neuromorphic switching dynamics in diffusive memristors.

Designable Photo-Responsive Micron-Scale Ultrathin Peptoid Nanobelts for Enhanced Performance on Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The development of high-reactive single-atom catalysts (SACs) based on long-range-ordered ultrathin organic nanomaterials (UTONMs) (i.e., below 3 nm) provides a significant tactic for the advancement in hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) but remains challenging. Herein, photo-responsive ultrathin peptoid nanobelts (UTPNBs) with a thickness of ≈2.2 nm and micron-scaled length are generated using the self-assembly of azobenzene-containing amphiphilic ternary alternating peptoids. The pendants hydrophobic conjugate stacking mechanism reveals the formation of 1D ultralong UTPNBs, whose thickness is dictated by the length of side groups that are linked to peptoid backbones. The photo-responsive feature is demonstrated by a reversible morphological transformation from UTPNBs to nanospheres (21.5 nm) upon alternative irradiation with UV and visible lights. Furthermore, the electrocatalyst performance of these aggregates co-decorated with nitrogen-rich ligand of terpyridine (TE) and uniformly-distributed atomic platinum (Pt) is evaluated toward HER, with a photo-controllable electrocatalyst activity that highly depended on both the presence of Pt element and structural characteristic of substrates. The Pt-based SACs using TE-modified UTPNBs as support exhibit a favorable electrocatalytic capacity with an overpotential of ≈28 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. This work presents a promising strategy to fabricate stimuli-responsive UTONMs-based catalysts with controllable HER catalytic performance.

Ordered Mesoporous Crystalline Frameworks Toward Promising Energy Applications

Ordered mesoporous crystalline frameworks (MCFs), which possess both functional frameworks and well-defined porosity, receive considerable attention because of their unique properties including high surface areas, large pore sizes, tailored porous structures, and compositions. Construction of novel crystalline mesoporous architectures that allows for rich accessible active sites and efficient mass transfer is envisaged to offer ample opportunities for potential energy-related applications. In this review, the rational synthesis, unique structures, and energy applications of MCFs are the main focus. After summarizing the synthetic approaches, an emphasis is placed on the delicate control of crystallites, mesophases, and nano-architectures by concluding basic principles and showing representative examples. Afterward, the currently fabricated components of MCFs such as metals, metal oxides, metal sulfides, and metal-organic frameworks are described in sequence. Further, typical applications of MCFs in rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis are highlighted. This review ends with the possible development and synthetic challenges of MCFs as well as a future prospect for high-efficiency energy applications, which underscores a pathway for developing advanced materials.

Spatially Amplified and Rigid Junction in Diblock Copolymers: Reduced Microphase Separation Size via Interface Expansion

We introduce an approach in diblock copolymer design, where modifying the junction point with rigid bulky monomer expands the cross-sectional area of the interface and leads to a decrease in the repeat period. Using living anionic polymerization, we synthesized a series of dialkynyl midfunctionalized poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (PSM-DA) and functionalized them using the thiol-alkyne click reaction with specifically selected rigid bulky monomers: PSS-(3-mercapto)propyl-heptaisobutyl substituted (PSS) and 1-adamantanethiol (ADA). This modification, though involving only a single monomer unit within the diblock copolymer structure, brought about a significant reduction in domain size, with PSS and ADA reducing it by 18% and 15%, respectively. The results indicate a method for reducing the domain sizes of block copolymers, which could lead to advancements in lithography and various nanotechnological applications.

Supramolecular Complexation of Metal Oxide Cluster and Non-Fluorinated Polymer for Large-Scale Fabrication of Proton Exchange Membranes for High-Power-Density Fuel Cells

Cost-effective, non-fluorinated polymer proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are highly desirable in emerging hydrogen fuel cells (FCs) technology; however, their low proton conductivities and poor chemical and dimension stabilities hinder their further development as alternatives to commercial Nafion®. Here, we report the inorganic-organic hybridization strategy by facilely complexing commercial polymers, polyvinyl butyral (PVB), with inorganic molecular nanoparticles, H3 PW12 O40 (PW) via supramolecular interaction. The strong affinity among them endows the obtained nanocomposites amphiphilicity and further lead to phase separation for bi-continuous structures with both inter-connected proton transportation channels and robust polymer scaffold, enabling high proton conductivities, mechanical/dimension stability and barrier performance, and the H2 /O2 FCs equipped with the composite PEM show promising power densities and long-term stability. Interestingly, the hybrid PEM can be fabricated continuously in large scale at challenging ~10 μm thickness via typical tape casting technique originated from their facile complexing strategy and the hybrids' excellent mechanical properties. This work not only provides potential material systems for commercial PEMs, but also raises interest for the research on hybrid composites for PEMs.

Structural Transformation of Coassembled Fmoc-Protected Aromatic Amino Acids to Nanoparticles

Materials made of assembled biomolecules such as amino acids have drawn much attention during the past decades. Nevertheless, research on the relationship between the chemical structure of building block molecules, supramolecular interactions, and self-assembled structures is still necessary. Herein, the self-assembly and the coassembly of fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-protected aromatic amino acids (tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine) were studied. The individual self-assembly of Fmoc-Tyr-OH and Fmoc-Phe-OH in water formed nanofibers, while Fmoc-Trp-OH self-assembled into nanoparticles. Moreover, when Fmoc-Tyr-OH or Fmoc-Phe-OH was coassembled with Fmoc-Trp-OH, the nanofibers were transformed into nanoparticles. UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to investigate the supramolecular interactions leading to the self-assembled architectures. π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding were the main driving forces leading to the self-assembly of Fmoc-Tyr-OH and Fmoc-Phe-OH forming nanofibers. Further, a mechanism involving a two-step coassembly process is proposed based on nucleation and elongation/growth to explain the structural transformation. Fmoc-Trp-OH acted as a fiber inhibitor to alter the molecular interactions in the Fmoc-Tyr-OH or Fmoc-Phe-OH self-assembled structures during the coassembly process, locking the coassembly in the nucleation step and preventing the formation of nanofibers. This structural transformation is useful for extending the application of amino acid self- or coassembled materials in different fields. For example, the amino acids forming nanofibers could be applied for tissue engineering, while they could be exploited as drug nanocarriers when they form nanoparticles.

Nanoscale polymer discs, toroids and platelets: a survey of their syntheses and potential applications

Polymer self-assembly has become a reliable and versatile workhorse to produce polymeric nanomaterials. With appropriate polymer design and monomer selection, polymers can assemble into shapes and morphologies beyond well-studied spherical and cylindrical micellar structures. Steadfast access to anisotropic polymer nanoparticles has meant that the fabrication and application of 2D soft matter has received increasing attention in recent years. In this review, we focus on nanoscale polymer discs, toroids, and platelets: three morphologies that are often interrelated and made from similar starting materials or common intermediates. For each morphology, we illustrate design rules, and group and discuss commonly used self-assembly strategies. We further highlight polymer compositions, fundamental principles and self-assembly conditions that enable precision in bottom-up fabrication strategies. Finally, we summarise potential applications of such nanomaterials, especially in the context of biomedical research and template chemistry and elaborate on future endeavours in this space.

3D Carbon Microspheres with a Maze-Like Structure and Large Mesopore Tunnels Built From Rapid Aerosol-Confined Coherent Salt/Surfactant Templating

Hierarchically porous carbons with tailor-made properties are essential for applications wherein rich active sites and fast mass transfer are required. Herein, a rapid aerosol-confined salt/surfactant templating approach is proposed for synthesizing hierarchically porous carbon microspheres (HPCMs) with a maze-like structure and large mesopore tunnels for high-performance tri-phase catalytic ozonation. The confined assembly in drying microdroplets is crucial for coherent salt (NaCl) and surfactant (F127) dual templating without macroscopic phase separation. The HPCMs possess tunable sizes, a maze-like structure with highly open macropores (0.3-30 µm) templated from NaCl crystal arrays, large intrawall mesopore tunnels (10-45 nm) templated from F127, and rich micropores (surface area >1000 m2 g-1 ) and oxygen heteroatoms originated from NaCl-confined carbonization of phenolic resin. The structure formation mechanism of the HPCMs and several influencing factors on properties are elaborated. The HPCMs exhibit superior performance in gas-liquid-solid tri-phase catalytic ozonation for oxalate degradation, owing to their hierarchical pore structure for fast mass transfer and rich defects and oxygen-containing groups (especially carbonyl) for efficient O3 activation. The reactive oxygen species responsible for oxalate degradation and the influences of several structure parameters on performance are discussed. This work may provide a platform for producing hierarchically porous materials for various applications.

Synthesis of Amphiphilic Block Copolymer and Its Application in Pigment-Based Ink

Amphiphilic block copolymers-based aqueous color inks show great potential in the field of visual communication design. However, the conventional step-by-step chemistry employed to synthesize the amphiphilic block copolymers is intricate, with low yield and high economic and environmental costs. In this work, we present a novel method for preparing an amphiphilic AB di-block copolymer of PCL-b-PAA by employing a combined polymerization strategy that involves both cationic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the ε-caprolactone monomer and the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization on the acrylic acid monomer simultaneously. The corresponding polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) serve as the hydrophobic and hydrophilic units, respectively. The effectiveness of the amphiphilic AB di-block copolymer as the polymeric pigment dispersant for water-based color inks is evaluated. The amphiphilic AB di-block copolymer of PCL-b-PAA exhibits a molecular weight of 1400 g mol-1, which is consistent with the theoretical value and suitable for polymeric dispersant application. The high surface excess (Γmax) of the PCL-b-PAA in water indicates a densely packed molecular morphology at the water/air interface. Additionally, micelles can be stably formed in the aqueous PCL-b-PAA solution at very low concentrations by demonstrating a low CMC value of 10-4 wt% and a micelle dimension of approximately 30 nm. The model ink dispersion is prepared using organic dyes (Disperse Yellow 232) and the amphiphilic block copolymer of PCL-b-PAA. The dispersion demonstrates near-Newtonian behavior, which is highly favorable for the application as inkjet ink. Furthermore, the ink dispersion displays a low viscosity, making it particularly suitable for visual communication design and printing purposes. Moreover, the ink dispersion demonstrates an unimodal distribution of the particle size, with an average diameter of approximately 500 nm. It retains exceptional stability of dispersion and even conducts a thermal aging treatment at 60 °C for 5 days. This work presents a facile and efficient synthetic strategy and molecular design of AB di-block copolymer-based dispersants for dye dispersions.

Impact of channel nanostructures of porous carbon particles on their catalytic performance

Mesoporous carbon particles have great potential due to their unique structural properties as support materials for catalytic applications. Particle shapes and channel nanostructures of mesoporous carbon particles can determine the reactant/product transport efficiency. However, the role of the channel nanostructure in the catalytic reaction has not been much explored. Herein, we introduce a facile method to fabricate a series of porous carbon particles (PCPs) with controlled channel exposure on the carbon surface and investigate the impact of the channel nanostructure of the PCPs on the catalytic activity. By employing a membrane emulsification method with a controlled solvent evaporation rate, we fabricate block copolymer (BCP) particles with uniform size and regulated degrees of cylindrical channel exposed to the particle surface. Followed by the carbonization of the BCP particles, a low amount (1.3 wt%) of Pt is incorporated into the PCP series to investigate the impact of channel nanostructures on the catalytic oxidation reaction of o-phenylenediamine (OPD). Specifically, PCP featuring highly open channel nanostructures shows a high reaction rate constant of 0.154 mM-1 s-1 for OPD oxidation, showing 5.5 times higher catalytic activity than those of closed channel nanostructures (0.028 mM-1 s-1). This study provides a deeper understanding of the impact of channel nanostructure within mesoporous carbon particles on catalytic activity.

Mechanochemistry in Block Copolymers: New Scission Site due to Dynamic Phase Separation

Mechanochemistry can lead to the degradation of the properties of covalent macromolecules. In recent years, numerous functional materials have been developed based on block copolymers (BCPs), however, like homopolymers, their chains could undergo mechanochemical damage during processing, which could have crucial impact on their performance. To investigate the mechanochemical response of BCPs, multiple polymers comprising different ratios of butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate were prepared with similar degree of polymerization and stressed in solution via ultrasonication. Interestingly, all BCPs, regardless of the amount of the methacrylate monomer, presented a mechanochemistry rate constant similar to that of the methacrylate homopolymer, while a random copolymer reacted like the acrylate homopolymer. Size-exclusion chromatography showed that, in addition to the typical main peak shift towards higher retention times, a different daughter fragment was produced indicating a secondary selective scission site, situated around the covalent connection between the two blocks. Molecular dynamics modeling using acrylate and methacrylate oligomers were carried out and indicated that dynamic phase separation occurs even in a good solvent. Such non-random conformations can explain the faster polymer mechanochemistry. Moreover, the dynamic model for end-to-end chain overstretching supports bond scission which is not necessarily chain-centered.

Spinodal Decomposition-Driven Structural Hierarchy of Mesoporous Inorganic Materials for Energy Applications

ConspectusMesoporous inorganic materials (MIMs) directed by block copolymers (BCPs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their high surface area, large pore volume, and tunable pore size. The structural hierarchy of inorganic materials with designed meso- and macrostructures combines the benefits of mesoporosity and tailored macrostructures in which macropores have increased ion/mass transfer and large capacity to carry guest material and have a macroscale particle morphology that permits close packing and a low surface energy. Existing methods for hierarchically structured MIMs require complicated multistep procedures including preparation of sacrificial macrotemplates (e.g., foams and colloidal spheres). Despite considerable efforts to control the macrostructures of mesoporous materials, major challenges remain in the formation of a structural hierarchy with ordered mesoporosity.In polymer science, spinodal decomposition (SD) is a physical phenomenon that spontaneously produces a wide variety of macroscale heterostructures from interconnected networks to isolated droplets. Exploitation of SD is a promising method to achieve precise control of the macrostructure (e.g., macropore, particle morphology) and mesostructure (e.g., pore size and structure, composition) of inorganic materials. However, this approach for tailoring the structural hierarchy of MIMs is unexplored due to the lack of effective systems that can control the complex thermodynamic interactions of inorganic precursor/polymer blends and the phase-separation kinetics.In this Account, we present our recent research progress on the development of synthesis systems that combine unique SD behaviors and BCP self-assembly in polymer blends. To generate macropores in MIMs, we have exploited interconnected macrostructures of SD induced by designed quench conditions of multicomponent blends containing BCP. These strategies enable control of the size of the macropores of the nanostructures independently and can be extended to various compositions (e.g., carbon, SiO2, TiO2, WO3, TiNb2O7, TiN). We also control the macroscopic morphology of the MIMs into spherical particles (e.g., solid and hollow mesoporous spheres) by using SD induced by increasing the mixing entropy penalty of polymer blends that consist BCP, homopolymer(s), and inorganic precursors. Furthermore, interfacial tension between polymers determines the macroscopic morphology of MIMs, from isotropic to anisotropic mesoporous particles (e.g., oblate, bowl, 2D nanosheet). The interfacial states of the homopolymer determine the pore orientation and particle morphology of BCP-directed MIMs.We also highlight the application of the hierarchically structured MIMs in energy storage devices. Generated macropores facilitate ion/mass transfer in lithium-ion batteries and stable accommodation of a large amount of sulfur in lithium-sulfur batteries. Designed morphologies of MIMs are beneficial to achieve high packing density as electrode materials in potassium-ion batteries and thereby achieve high volumetric capacities.Recent advances in SD-driven synthesis for the structural hierarchy of MIMs will inspire how polymer science can be used as a platform for preparing the designed inorganic materials. Additionally, broadening the polymer and composition repertoire will guide in novel frontiers in the design and applications of MIMs in various fields.

Solvent-Free Synthesis of Hollow Carbon Nanostructures for Efficient Sodium Storage

The structural characteristics of hollow carbon nanostructures (HCNs) result in intriguing physicochemical properties and various applications, especially for electrochemical energy storage applications. However, the currently solvent-based template methods to prepare HCNs are still far from meeting the facile, environment-friendly, and scalable demand. Herein, we explored a general and facile solvent-free block copolymer self-assembly approach to prepare various hollow hard carbon nanostructures, including hollow carbon nanofibers, hollow carbon Janus nanotadpoles, hollow carbon spheres, etc. It was found that the obtained HCNs possess abundant active sites, fast pathways for electrons/ions transport, and superior electronic conducting connectivity, which are promising for efficient electrochemical energy storage. Typically, the resultant hollow carbon nanofibers with a thick-walled tube deliver a high reversible capacity (431 mAh g-1) and excellent rate performance (259 mAh g-1 at 800 mA g-1) for sodium ion storage. This intelligent solvent-free block copolymer self-assembly method would inspire the design of hollow hard carbon-based nanostructures for advanced applications in various energy conversion and storage.

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Cubosomes as an Efficient Electrocatalyst with High Accessibility of Internal Active Sites

Porous carbon particles (PCPs) present considerable potential for applications across a wide range of fields, particularly within the realms of energy and catalysis. The control of their overall morphologies and pore structures has remained a big challenge. Here, using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the precursor and polymer cubosomes (PCs) as the template, nitrogen-doped carbon cubosomes (SP-NCs) with a single primitive bicontinuous architecture are prepared. SP-NCs inherit the high porosity of MOFs, generating a high specific surface area of 825 m2 g-1 and uniformly distributed active sites with a 5.9 at % nitrogen content. Thanks to the presence of three-dimensional continuous mesochannels that enable much higher accessibility of internal active sites over those of their porous counterparts' lack of continuous channels, SP-NCs exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction with a half-wave potential of 0.87 V, situating them in the leading level of the reported carbon electrocatalysts. Serving as an air cathode catalyst of the Zn-air battery, SP-NCs exhibit excellent performance, outperforming the commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Intermetallic Nanocrystals for Fuel-Cells-Based Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis underpins the renewable electrochemical conversions for sustainability, which further replies on metallic nanocrystals as vital electrocatalysts. Intermetallic nanocrystals have been known to show distinct properties compared to their disordered counterparts, and been long explored for functional improvements. Tremendous progresses have been made in the past few years, with notable trend of more precise engineering down to an atomic level and the investigation transferring into more practical membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which motivates this timely review. After addressing the basic thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals, we discuss classic and latest synthetic strategies that enable not only the formation of intermetallic phase but also the rational control of other catalysis-determinant structural parameters, such as size and morphology. We also demonstrate the emerging intermetallic nanomaterials for potentially further advancement in energy electrocatalysis. Then, we discuss the state-of-the-art characterizations and representative intermetallic electrocatalysts with emphasis on oxygen reduction reaction evaluated in a MEA setup. We summarize this review by laying out existing challenges and offering perspective on future research directions toward practicing intermetallic electrocatalysts for energy conversions.

Fluorescence-readout as a powerful macromolecular characterisation tool

The last few decades have witnessed significant progress in synthetic macromolecular chemistry, which can provide access to diverse macromolecules with varying structural complexities, topology and functionalities, bringing us closer to the aim of controlling soft matter material properties with molecular precision. To reach this goal, the development of advanced analytical techniques, allowing for micro-, molecular level and real-time investigation, is essential. Due to their appealing features, including high sensitivity, large contrast, fast and real-time response, as well as non-invasive characteristics, fluorescence-based techniques have emerged as a powerful tool for macromolecular characterisation to provide detailed information and give new and deep insights beyond those offered by commonly applied analytical methods. Herein, we critically examine how fluorescence phenomena, principles and techniques can be effectively exploited to characterise macromolecules and soft matter materials and to further unravel their constitution, by highlighting representative examples of recent advances across major areas of polymer and materials science, ranging from polymer molecular weight and conversion, architecture, conformation to polymer self-assembly to surfaces, gels and 3D printing. Finally, we discuss the opportunities for fluorescence-readout to further advance the development of macromolecules, leading to the design of polymers and soft matter materials with pre-determined and adaptable properties.

Dendritic mesoporous nanoparticles for the detection, adsorption, and degradation of hazardous substances in the environment: State-of-the-art and future prospects

Equipped with hierarchical pores and three-dimensional (3D) center-radial channels, dendritic mesoporous nanoparticles (DMNs) make their pore volumes extremely large, specific surface areas super-high, internal spaces especially accessible, and so on. Other entities (like organic moieties or nanoparticles) can be modified onto the interfaces or skeletons of DMNs, accomplishing their functionalization for desirable applications. This comprehensive review emphasizes on the design and construction of DMNs-based systems which serve as sensors, adsorbents and catalysts for the detection, adsorption, and degradation of hazardous substances, mainly including the construction procedures of brand-new DMNs-based materials and the involved hazardous substances (like industrial chemicals, chemical dyes, heavy metal ions, medicines, pesticides, and harmful gases). The sensitive, adsorptive, or catalytic performances of various DMNs have been compared; correspondingly, the reaction mechanisms have been revealed strictly. It is honestly anticipated that the profound discussion could offer scientists certain enlightenment to design novel DMNs-based systems towards the detection, adsorption, and degradation of hazardous substances, respectively or comprehensively.

Structural Control of Nanofibers According to Electrospinning Process Conditions and Their Applications

Nanofibers have gained much attention because of the large surface area they can provide. Thus, many fabrication methods that produce nanofiber materials have been proposed. Electrospinning is a spinning technique that can use an electric field to continuously and uniformly generate polymer and composite nanofibers. The structure of the electrospinning system can be modified, thus making changes to the structure, and also the alignment of nanofibers. Moreover, the nanofibers can also be treated, modifying the nanofiber structure. This paper thoroughly reviews the efforts to change the configuration of the electrospinning system and the effects of these configurations on the nanofibers. Excellent works in different fields of application that use electrospun nanofibers are also introduced. The studied materials functioned effectively in their application, thereby proving the potential for the future development of electrospinning nanofiber materials.

Controllable One-Step Assembly of Uniform Liquid Crystalline Block Copolymer Cylindrical Micelles by a Tailored Nucleation-Growth Process and Their Application as Tougheners

The fabrication of uniform cylindrical nanoobjects from soft materials has attracted tremendous research attention from both fundamental research and practical application points of view but has also posed outstanding challenges in terms of their preparation. Herein, we report a one-step method to assemble cylindrical micelles (CMs) with highly controllable lengths from a single liquid crystalline block copolymer by an in situ nucleation-growth strategy. By adjusting the assembly conditions, the lengths of the CMs are controlled from hundreds of nanometers to micrometers. Several influencing factors are systematically investigated to comprehensively understand the process. Particularly, the solvent quality is found determinative in either enhancing or suppressing the nucleation process to produce shorter and longer CMs, respectively. Taking advantage of this strategy, the lengths of CMs can be nicely controlled over a wide concentration range of four orders of magnitude. Lastly, CMs are produced on decent scales and applied as additives to dramatically toughen glassy plastic matrix, revealing an unprecedented length-dependent toughening effect.

Monitoring of Pore Orientation by in Operando Grazing Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering during Templated Electrodeposition of Mesoporous Pt Films

We have used in operando grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) to monitor structural changes during templated electrodeposition of mesoporous platinum films on gold electrodes from a ternary lyotropic liquid crystalline mixture of aqueous hexachloroplatinic acid and the diblock copolymer surfactant Brij56. While the cylindrical micelles of the lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) in the hexagonal phase have a center-to-center distance of 7.5 nm with a preferential alignment parallel to the electrode surface, the electrodeposited platinum films contain highly ordered mesopores arranged in a 2D hexagonal structure, with a center-to-center distance of about 8.5 nm and a preferential orientation perpendicular to the electrode surface. The progression of structural changes of the LLC template and the deposited mesoporous Pt could be monitored for the first time in operando by GISAXS: within the first 14 s of deposition, a nucleation burst of Pt coincides with a loss of preferential alignment of the LLC. Initially, the morphology of the 2-dimensionally nucleated Pt replicates the Au substrate. During the following 5 to 7 min, the growth morphology of the Pt film changes, and vertically aligned mesopores form. Our results indicate mutual interaction between the species involved in the electrodeposition and the LLC template, leading to a partial loss of horizontal orientation of the LLC during Pt nucleation before vertical rearrangement of the micelles to the electrode surface. The vertically aligned mesopores in the Pt and the possibility to produce freestanding films make these materials interesting in fields such as electrocatalysis, energy harvesting, and nanofluidics.

Modulating Electronic Metal-Support Interactions to Boost Visible-Light-Driven Hydrolysis of Ammonia Borane: Nickel-Platinum Nanoparticles Supported on Phosphorus-Doped Titania

Ammonia borane (AB) is a promising material for chemical H2 storage owing to its high H2 density (up to 19.6 wt %). However, the development of an efficient catalyst for driving H2 evolution through AB hydrolysis remains challenging. Therefore, a visible-light-driven strategy for generating H2 through AB hydrolysis was implemented in this study using Ni-Pt nanoparticles supported on phosphorus-doped TiO2 (Ni-Pt/P-TiO2 ) as photocatalysts. Through surface engineering, P-TiO2 was prepared by phytic-acid-assisted phosphorization and then employed as an ideal support for immobilizing Ni-Pt nanoparticles via a facile co-reduction strategy. Under visible-light irradiation at 283 K, Ni40 Pt60 /P-TiO2 exhibited improved recyclability and a high turnover frequency of 967.8 molH 2 ${{_{{\rm H}{_{2}}}}}$  molPt -1  min-1 . Characterization experiments and density functional theory calculations indicated that the enhanced performance of Ni40 Pt60 /P-TiO2 originated from a combination of the Ni-Pt alloying effect, the Mott-Schottky junction at the metal-semiconductor interface, and strong metal-support interactions. These findings not only underscore the benefits of utilizing multipronged effects to construct highly active AB-hydrolyzing catalysts, but also pave a path toward designing high-performance catalysts by surface engineering to modulate the electronic metal-support interactions for other visible-light-induced reactions.

Seeded RAFT Polymerization-Induced Self-assembly: Recent Advances and Future Opportunities

Over the past decade, polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has fully proved its versatility for scale-up production of block copolymer nanoparticles with tunable sizes and morphologies; yet, there are still some limitations. Recently, seeded PISA approaches combing PISA with heterogeneous seeded polymerizations have been greatly explored and are expected to overcome the limitations of traditional PISA. In this review, recent advances in seeded PISA that have expanded new horizons for PISA are highlighted including i) general considerations for seeded PISA (e.g., kinetics, the preparation of seeds, the selection of monomers), ii) morphological evolution induced by seeded PISA (e.g., from corona-shell-core nanoparticles to vesicles, vesicles-to-toroid, disassembly of vesicles into nanospheres), and iii) various well-defined nanoparticles with hierarchical and sophisticated morphologies (e.g., multicompartment micelles, porous vesicles, framboidal vesicles, AXn -type colloidal molecules). Finally, new insights into seeded PISA and future perspectives are proposed.

Hybrid Polymer Vesicles: Controllable Preparation and Potential Applications

Hybrid polymer vesicles contain functional nanoparticles (NPs) in their walls, interfaces, coronae, or cavities. NPs render the hybrid vesicles with specific physical properties, while polymers endow them with structural stability and may significantly reduce the high toxicity of NPs. Therefore, hybrid vesicles integrate fascinating multifunctions from both NPs and polymeric vesicles, which have gained tremendous attention because of their diverse promising applications. Various types of delicate hybrid polymeric vesicles with size control and tunable localization of NPs in different parts of vesicles have been constructed via in situ and ex situ strategies, respectively. Their potential applications have been widely explored, as well. This review presents the progress of block copolymer (BCP) vesicle systems containing different types of NPs including metal NPs, magnetic NPs, and semiconducting quantum dots (QDs), etc. The strategies for controlling the location of NPs within hybrid vesicles are discussed. Typical potential applications of the elegant hybrid vesicles are also highlighted.

A new and versatile template towards vertically oriented nanopillars and nanotubes

Vertically oriented nanostructures bring unparalleled high surface area, light trapping capability, and high device density to electronic, optoelectronic, and energy storage devices. However, general methods to prepare such structures remain sparse and are typically based on anodized metal oxide templates. Here, we demonstrate a new approach: using vertically oriented tetraaniline nanopillar arrays as templates for creating nanopillars and nanotubes of other materials. The tetraaniline templates are scalable and easy to prepare. Vertical arrays of a variety of materials can be created by directly coating them onto the tetraaniline nanopillars via vapor, solution, or electrodeposition. Since the tetraaniline template is encased within the target material, it does not require post-deposition removal, thus enabling vertical structure formation of sensitive materials. Conversely, removal of the encased tetraaniline template provides vertically oriented nanotube arrays in a lost-wax-type operation. The resulting vertical structures exhibit a high degree of orientation and height uniformity, with tunable feature size, spacing, and array density. Furthermore, the deposition location and shape of the vertical arrays can be patterned at a resolution of 3 μm. Collectively, these attributes should broaden the material repertoire for vertically oriented structures, and lead to advancements in energy storage, electronics, and optoelectronics.

Sequence effect on the self-assembly of discrete amphiphilic co-oligomers with fluorene-azobenzene semirigid backbones

Sequences can have a dramatic impact on the unique properties and self-assembly in natural macromolecules, which has received increasing interest. Herein, we report a series of discrete amphiphilic co-oligomers with the same composition but different building blocks in a semirigid backbone. These sequence-defined oligomers possess two primary amine groups on the side chain of the azobenzene building block, and hence, they become amphipathic due to quaternization of the amine groups when protonated in acidic aqueous solution. These oligomer isomers assembled into different nanoparticles, including nanofibers, hollow vesicles and spherical micellar complexes, in a THF/water/HCl mixture under the same conditions. UV-vis absorption spectra, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray scattering (XRD) experiments combined with theoretical calculations reveal that the sequence-controlled co-oligomers induce different molecular packing conformations and arrangement modes of building blocks in self-assembly. Furthermore, these self-assembled nanoparticles demonstrate photoresponsive morphological transformation and fluorescence emission under UV light irradiation due to trans-to-cis photoisomerization of azobenzene. This work demonstrates that customizing functional nanoparticles can be achieved by controlling the sequence structure in synthetic co-oligomers.

Self-assembled nanoformulations of paclitaxel for enhanced cancer theranostics

Chemotherapy has occupied the critical position in cancer therapy, especially towards the post-operative, advanced, recurrent, and metastatic tumors. Paclitaxel (PTX)-based formulations have been widely used in clinical practice, while the therapeutic effect is far from satisfied due to off-target toxicity and drug resistance. The caseless multi-components make the preparation technology complicated and aggravate the concerns with the excipients-associated toxicity. The self-assembled PTX nanoparticles possess a high drug content and could incorporate various functional molecules for enhancing the therapeutic index. In this work, we summarize the self-assembly strategy for diverse nanodrugs of PTX. Then, the advancement of nanodrugs for tumor therapy, especially emphasis on mono-chemotherapy, combinational therapy, and theranostics, have been outlined. Finally, the challenges and potential improvements have been briefly spotlighted.

Micellar Nanoreactors Enabled Site-Selective Decoration of Pt Nanoparticles Functionalized Mesoporous SiO2 /WO3-x Composites for Improved CO Sensing

Site-selective and partial decoration of supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) with transition metal oxides (e.g., FeOx ) can remarkably improve its catalytic performance and maintain the functions of the carrier. However, it is challenging to selectively deposit transition metal oxides on the metal NPs embedded in the mesopores of supporting matrix through conventional deposition method. Herein, a restricted in situ site-selective modification strategy utilizing poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) micellar nanoreactors is proposed to overcome such an obstacle. The PEO shell of PEO-b-PS micelles interacts with the hydrolyzed tungsten salts and silica precursors, while the hydrophobic organoplatinum complex and ferrocene are confined in the hydrophobic PS core. The thermal treatment leads to mesoporous SiO2 /WO3-x framework, and meanwhile FeOx nanolayers are in situ partially deposited on the supported Pt NPs due to the strong metal-support interaction between FeOx and Pt. The selective modification of Pt NPs with FeOx makes the Pt NPs present an electron-deficient state, which promotes the mobility of CO and activates the oxidation of CO. Therefore, mesoporous SiO2 /WO3-x -FeOx /Pt based gas sensors show a high sensitivity (31 ± 2 in 50 ppm of CO), excellent selectivity, and fast response time (3.6 s to 25 ppm) to CO gas at low operating temperature (66 °C, 74% relative humidity).

Fast Fabrication of Porous Amphiphilic Polyamides via Nonconventional Evaporation Induced Phase Separation

In the present work, we report a facile approach for the fast fabrication of porous films and coatings of long-chain polyamides through a nonconventional evaporation induced phase separation. Because of its amphiphilic nature, polyamide 12 can be dissolved in the mixture of a high-polarity solvent and a low-polarity solvent, while it could not be dissolved in either solvent solely. The sequential and fast evaporation of the solvents leads to the formation of porous structures within 1 min. Moreover, we have investigated the dependence of the pore structures on composition of the solutions, and have demonstrated that our approach can be applied to other long-chain polycondensates, too. Our findings can provide insight on the fabrication of porous materials by using amphiphilic polymers.

Efficient Self-Powered Overall Water Splitting by Ni4 Mo/MoO2 Heterogeneous Nanorods Trifunctional Electrocatalysts

The exploration of cost-effective multifunctional electrodes with high activity toward energy storage and conversion systems, such as self-powered alkaline water electrolysis, is very meaningful, although studies remain quite limited. Herein, a heterogeneous nickel-molybdenum (NiMo)-based electrode is fabricated for the first time as a trifunctional electrode for asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC), hydrogen evolution reaction, and oxygen evolution reaction. The trifunctional electrode consists of Ni₄ Mo and MoO₂ (denoted Ni₄ Mo/MoO₂ ) with hierarchical nanorod heterostructure and abundant heterogeneous nanointerfaces creating sufficient active sites and efficient charge transfer for achieving high performance self-power electrochemical devices. The ASC consists of the as-prepared Ni₄ Mo/MoO₂ positive electrode, showing a broad potential window of 1.6 V, and a maximum energy density of 115.6 Wh kg^-1 , while the alkaline overall water splitting (OWS) assembled using the as-prepared Ni₄ Mo/MoO₂ as bifunctional catalysts only requires a low cell voltage of 1.48 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in aqueous alkaline electrolyte. Finally, by integrating the Ni₄ Mo/MoO₂ -based ASC and OWS devices, an aqueous self-powered OWS is assembled, which self-power the OWS to generate hydrogen gas and oxygen gas, verifying great potential of the as-prepared Ni₄ Mo/MoO₂ for sustainable and renewable energy storage and conversion system.

Direct Visualization of the Self-Alignment Process for Nanostructured Block Copolymer Thin Films by Transmission Electron Microscopy

Herein, this work aims to directly visualize the morphological evolution of the controlled self-assembly of star-block polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) thin films via in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. With an environmental chip, possessing a built-in metal wire-based microheater fabricated by the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technique, in situ TEM observations can be conducted under low-dose conditions to investigate the development of film-spanning perpendicular cylinders in the block copolymer (BCP) thin films via a self-alignment process. Owing to the free-standing condition, a symmetric condition of the BCP thin films can be formed for thermal annealing under vacuum with neutral air surface, whereas an asymmetric condition can be formed by an air plasma treatment on one side of the thin film that creates an end-capped neutral layer. A systematic comparison of the time-resolved self-alignment process in the symmetric and asymmetric conditions can be carried out, giving comprehensive insights for the self-alignment process via the nucleation and growth mechanism.

Wet-Spun Porous Carbon Microfibers for Enhanced Electrochemical Detection

We present a novel copolymer-based, uniform porous carbon microfiber (PCMF) formed via wet-spinning for significantly improved electrochemical detection. Carbon fiber (CF), fabricated from a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor, is commonly used in batteries or for electrochemical detection of neurochemicals due to its biplanar geometry and desirable edge plane sites with high surface free energy and defects for enhanced analyte interactions. Recently, the presence of pores within carbon materials has presented interesting electrochemistry leading to detection improvements; however, there is currently no method to uniformly create pores on a carbon microfiber surface impacting a broad range of electrochemical applications. Here, we synthesized controllable porous carbon fibers from a spinning dope of the copolymers PAN and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in dimethylformamide via wet spinning for the first time. PMMA serves as a sacrificial block introducing macropores of increased edge-plane character on the fiber. Methods were optimized to produce porous CFs at similar dimensions to traditional CF. We prove that an increase in porosity enhances the degree of disorder on the surface, resulting in significantly improved detection capabilities with fast-scan cyclic voltammetry. Local trapping of analytes at porous geometries enables electrochemical reversibility with improved sensitivity, linear range of detection, and measurement temporal resolution. Overall, we demonstrate the utility of a copolymer synthetic method for PCMF fabrication, providing a stable, controlled macroporous fiber framework with enhanced edge plane character. This work will significantly advance fundamental investigations of how pores and edge plane sites influence electrochemical detection.

Facile Fabrication of Monodisperse Micron-Sized Dual Janus Silica Particles with Asymmetric Morphology and Chemical Environment

Janus particles are a kind of materials with asymmetric morphology or surface chemical environment. But so far, the preparation of particles with dual asymmetry is still a challenging problem. Hence the cation surfactant hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and co-surfactant octadecylamine are applied to improve the Pickering emulsion stability, and the micron-sized silica particles are arranged in a single layer at the toluene-water interface through electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, organosilane reagents are added in the preparation process, resulting in the construction of asymmetric hydrophilic or hydrophobic mesoporous precisely onto the micron-sized silica particles surface. The cation surfactant-assisted Pickering emulsion method is simple, effective, and convenience, which can be applied in the synthesis of various dual Janus silica particles for specific applications.

Tunable Polymer Nanoreactors from RAFT Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly: Fabrication of Nanostructured Carbon-Coated Anatase as Battery Anode Materials with Variable Morphology and Porosity

We demonstrate a modular synthesis approach to yield mesoporous carbon-coated anatase (denoted as TiO₂/C) nanostructures. Combining polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization enabled the fabrication of uniform core-shell polymeric nanoreactors with tunable morphologies. The nanoreactors comprised of a poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) shell and a poly(benzyl methacrylate) (PBzMA) core. We selected worm-like and vesicular morphologies to guide the nanostructuring of a TiO₂ precursor, namely, titanium(IV) bis(ammonium lactato)dihydroxide (TALH). Subsequent carbonization yielded nanocrystalline anatase and simultaneously introduced a porous carbon framework, which also suppressed the crystal growth (∼5 nm crystallites). The as-prepared TiO₂/C materials comprised of a porous structure, with large specific surface areas (>85 m²/g) and various carbon contents (20-30 wt %). As anode components in lithium-ion batteries, our TiO₂/C nanomaterials improved the cycling stability, facilitated high overall capacities, and minimized the capacity loss compared to both their sans carbon and commercial anatase analogues.

Metal Organic Framework Cubosomes

We demonstrate a general strategy for the synthesis of ordered bicontinuous-structured metal organic frameworks (MOFs) by using polymer cubosomes (PCs) with a double primitive structure (Im 3 ‾ ${\bar{3}}$ m symmetry) as the template. The filling of MOF precursors in the open channel of PCs, followed by their coordination and removal of the template, generates MOF cubosomes with a single primitive topology (Pm 3 ‾ ${\bar{3}}$ m) and average mesopore diameters of 60-65 nm. Mechanism study reveals that the formation of ZIF-8 cubosomes undergoes a new MOF growth process, which involves the formation of individual MOF seeds in the template, their growth and eventual fusion into the cubosomes. Their growth kinetics follows the Avrami equation with an Avrami exponent of n=3 and a growth rate of k=1.33×10^-4 , indicating their fast 3D heterogeneous growth mode. Serving as a bioreactor, the ZIF-8 cubosomes show high loading of trypsin enzyme, leading to a high catalytic activity in the proteolysis of bovine serum albumin.

Supramolecular nanofibers via protrusion budding interfacial membrane

We have proposed an approach to achieve nanofibers or composite nanofibers with functional nanoparticles via the protrusion of the budding interfacial membrane in an oil-water emulsion droplet stabilized with copolymers. The nanofibers were formed by the wrapping of the monolayer of the copolymers. The length is tunable with the copolymer concentration and water/oil ratio of the emulsion.

Au-Loaded Superparamagnetic Mesoporous Bimetallic CoFeB Nanovehicles for Sensitive Autoantibody Detection

Construction of a well-defined mesoporous nanostructure is crucial for applying nonnoble metals in catalysis and biomedicine owing to their highly exposed active sites and accessible surfaces. However, it remains a great challenge to controllably synthesize superparamagnetic CoFe-based mesoporous nanospheres with tunable compositions and exposed large pores, which are sought for immobilization or adsorption of guest molecules for magnetic capture, isolation, preconcentration, and purification. Herein, a facile assembly strategy of a block copolymer was developed to fabricate a mesoporous CoFeB amorphous alloy with abundant metallic Co/Fe atoms, which served as an ideal scaffold for well-dispersed loading of Au nanoparticles (∼3.1 nm) via the galvanic replacement reaction. The prepared Au-CoFeB possessed high saturation magnetization as well as uniform and large open mesopores (∼12.5 nm), which provided ample accessibility to biomolecules, such as nucleic acids, enzymes, proteins, and antibodies. Through this distinctive combination of superparamagnetism (CoFeB) and biofavorability (Au), the resulting Au-CoFeB was employed as a dispersible nanovehicle for the direct capture and isolation of p53 autoantibody from serum samples. Highly sensitive detection of the autoantibody was achieved with a limit of detection of 0.006 U/mL, which was 50 times lower than that of the conventional p53-ELISA kit-based detection system. Our assay is capable of quantifying differential expression patterns for detecting p53 autoantibodies in ovarian cancer patients. This assay provides a rapid, inexpensive, and portable platform with the potential to detect a wide range of clinically relevant protein biomarkers.
