Five-coordinate transition metal complexes and the value of τ5: observations and caveats

Co(III) complexes of the pentadentate NHC ligand PY4Im: carbene-induced trans influences and the non-disappearing 13C NMR peak

Co(III) complexes of the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand PY4Im (PY4Im = (1,3-bis(bis(2-pyridyl)methyl)imidazol-2-ylidene)) having the general formula [(PY4Im)Co(X)](ClO4)n (X = NCMe; n = 3: OH-, N3-, NCS-, ONO-, F-; n = 2: O2CO2-, n = 1; (N3-)3, n = 0) were prepared and structurally characterised. X-ray structural data are consistent with the presence of a trans influence due to the coordinated carbene carbon, and this is also supported by computational results. 13C NMR spectra of the complexes did not display peaks corresponding to the carbene carbon, except in the case of the [(PY4Im)Co(O2CO)]+ cation, where a peak at δ = 170.21 ppm was observed. However, HMBC spectra allowed indirect determination of the chemical shifts of the carbene carbon in the remaining complexes, owing to the geometry of the PY4Im ligand. Calculated 13C chemical shifts for the complexes showed very good agreement with the experimental values for all but the carbene carbon atoms in all cases.

The structural studies of the fluorinated Schiff base ligand and its copper complex were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared, UV-visible, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis unveils a dinuclear copper complex arising from double bridging acetate anions to copper ions that are chelated by the tridentate Schiff base ligand Cu(LS). The trigonality index τ5 of 0.080 indicates a distorted square pyramidal coordination geometry for the metal. The SL ligand and complex exhibit intra- and intermolecular interactions, leading to unique supramolecular architectures. The structural changes between the free halogenated Schiff base ligand and upon coordination with the metal were extensively studied by experimental and theoretical approaches. The intra- and intermolecular interactions have been analyzed by Hirshfeld surface and quantum theory of atoms in molecules analysis, and the enrichment ratio highlights the most favored interactions in the formation of molecular packing. The chemical and physical properties, such as the HOMO - LUMO energy gap, chemical reactivity, and electron density topology, are studied using density functional theory studies. In addition, the Schiff base ligand compound is used to study the latent fingerprint analysis.

Trianionic Carbocyclic NCN Pincer Ligand: Coordination Chemistry and Reactivity Studies

(BCHT-NCN)H3 (1) [1,6-bis(methylene(bis-2,6-diisopropylaniline)(benzo)cycloheptatriene)] was synthesized by nucleophilic substitution treating 1,6-bis(methylenebromide)(benzo)cycloheptatriene with 2 equiv of Li[2,6-iPr2C6H3NH], Li[Dipp-NH]. Triple deprotonation of (BCHT-NCN)H3 (1) using n-BuLi yields the deprotonation product [(BCHT-NCN)Li3] (2), which crystallizes as a dimer [{[BCHT-NCN]Li3(Et2O)2}2] (2)2. Coordination compounds of the trianionic pincer ligand were obtained with SnCl2, YCl3(THF)3.5, and HfCl4(THF)2: [(BCHT-NCN)SnLi] (3), [(BCHT-NCN)Y(THF)2] (4), [(BCHT-NCN)HfCl2][Li(THF)4] (5), respectively. A hafnium hydride complex [(BCHT-NCN)HfH(HBEt3)][K(Et2O)2] (6) was isolated after reaction of 5 with K[HBEt3]. A MeNHC substitution product [(BCHT-NCN)HfCl(MeNHC)] (7) was synthesized treating compound 5 with MeNHC at rt. Following an n-BuLi reaction of 7 gives an alkyl complex [(BCHT-NCN)Hf(n-Bu)(MeNHC)] (8). Thermolysis of 7 yields the isomerization product [(BCHT-NCN#)HfCl(MeNHC)] (9), which was transferred into a methyl complex [(BCHT-NCN#)HfMe(MeNHC)] (10) upon treatment with MeMgBr. Hydride abstraction from complex 9 leads to a cationic complex [(BCHT-NCN+)HfCl(MeNHC)][Al(OtBuF)4] (11).

Chromium-Thiolate Complex Undergoing C-S Bond Cleavage

The cleavage of C-S bonds represents a crucial step in fossil fuel refinement to remove organosulfur impurities. Efforts are required to identify alternatives that can replace the energy-intensive hydrodesulfurization process currently in use. In this context, we have developed a series of bis-thiolato-ligated CrIII complexes supported by the L2- ligand (L2- = 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-diyl(bis(1,1-diphenylethanethiolate), one of them displaying desulfurization of one thiolate of the ligand under reducing and acidic conditions at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. While only 5-coordinated complexes were previously isolated by reaction of L2- with 3d metal MIII ions, both 5- and 6-coordinated mononuclear complexes have been obtained in the case of CrIII, viz., [CrIIILCl], [CrIIILCl2]-, and [CrIIILCl(CH3CN)]. The investigation of the reactivity of [CrIIILCl(CH3CN)] under reducing conditions led to a dinuclear [CrIII2L2(μ-Cl)(μ-OH)] compound and, in the presence of protons, to the mononuclear CrIII complex [CrIII(LN2S)2]+, where LN2S- is the partially desulfurized form of L2-. A desulfurization mechanism has been proposed involving the release of H2S, as evidenced experimentally.

Homoleptic hexa- and penta-coordinated gallium(I) amide complexes of ruthenium and molybdenum

Reaction of neutral olefin complexes of ruthenium and molybdenum with GaTMP (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl) by substitution leads to the formation of respective five- and six-coordinated homoleptic products. [Ru(GaTMP)5] (1) and [Mo(GaTMP)6] (2) were isolated and characterized. Core structure geometries were analyzed using continuous shape measure, and the complexes were subjected to DFT calculations unveiling competing π-interactions between the transition metal center and the amido substituent with the unoccupied pπ orbitals of the gallium.

A CoII-Hydroxide Complex That Converts Directly to a CoII-Acetamide during Catalytic Nitrile Hydration

In exploring structural and functional mimics of nitrile hydratases, we report the synthesis of the pseudo-trigonal bipyramidal CoII complexes (K)[CoII(DMF)(LPh)] (1(DMF)), (NMe4)2[CoII(OAc)(LPh)] (1(OAc)), and (NMe4)2[CoII(OH)(LPh)] (1(OH)) (LPh = 2,2',2''-nitrilo-tris-(N-phenylacetamide; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide; -OAc = acetate)). The complexes were characterized using NMR, FT-IR, ESI-MS, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography, showing the LPh ligand to bind in a tetradentate tripodal fashion alongside the respective ancillary donor. One of the complexes, 1(OH), is an unusual structural and functional mimic of the Co active site in Co nitrile hydratases. 1(OH) reacted with acetonitrile to yield the CoII-acetamide complex (NMe4)2[CoII(NHC(O)CH3)(LPh)], 2, which was also thoroughly characterized. In the presence of excess hydroxide, 1(OH) was found to catalyze quantitative conversion of the added hydroxide into acetamide. Despite the differences in Co oxidation state in nitrile hydratases and 1(OH) (CoIII versus CoII, respectively), 1(OH) was nonetheless an effective nitrile hydration catalyst, selectively producing acetamide over multiple turnovers.

Application of a distinctly bent, trinuclear, end-to-end azide bridged, mixed valence cobalt(iii/ii/iii) complex in the fabrication of photosensitive Schottky barrier diodes

A mixed-valence trinuclear cobalt(iii)-cobalt(ii)-cobalt(iii) complex, [(μ-1,3-N3)Co3L(N3)3]·MeOH has been synthesized using a tetradentate N2O2 donor 'reduced Schiff base' ligand, H2L {1,3-bis(2-hydroxybenzylamino)2,2-dimethylpropane} and azide as anionic co-ligand. The complex has been characterised by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies etc. The cobalt(iii)-cobalt(ii)-cobalt(iii) skeleton in the complex is non-linear and non-centrosymmetric. The redox behavior of the complex was studied by using Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). The complex is found to be a semiconductor material as confirmed by determining the band gap of this complex by experimental as well as theoretical studies. The band gap in the solid state has been determined experimentally. The conductivity of the synthesized complex based device improves considerably in illumination conditions from the non-illuminated conditions. The complex has also been used to fabricate Schottky barrier diodes.

Enhanced Catalytic Activity of a Copper(II) Metal-Organic Framework Constructed via Semireversible Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Dehydration

Herein, we present a copper(II) metal-organic framework, [Cu2(btec)(OH2)4]·2H2O (1) [(btec)4- = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate], that undergoes single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations into two anhydrous phases 2' and 2″ with the chemical formula [Cu2(btec)], triggered by two-step dehydration at 403 and 433 K, respectively. After immersion in water for 3 days at room temperature, 2' transformed into [Cu2(btec)(OH2)] (3), while both 2' and 2″ took 1 week to revert to 1. Dynamic vapor sorption studies validated water-induced reversible structural transformations at 70% relative humidity (RH). According to single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), the local coordination geometry of the Cu2+ ion in 2' changed from a saturated octahedron to a coordinatively unsaturated square-based pyramid in 3, manifested by changes in color and dimensionality. From a topological point of view, all of the scaffolds show a binodal (3,6)-connected kgd topology with the point symbol {43}2{46}. In addition, the materials were thoroughly characterized using routine spectroscopic data and various analytical techniques. The catalytic activity of the microporous materials in the liquid-phase oxidation of styrene in acetonitrile, using 30% (wt) H2O2 as the oxidant, was investigated. The excellent performance of the monohydrous phase 3 was shown to be superior to the pristine framework and the anhydrous counterparts, as evidenced by a good turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) = 82.6 and 21.0 h-1, respectively. Within 4 h, the substrates were catalytically oxidized to the desired products with up to 67% conversion and 100% benzaldehyde selectivity. It is worth noting that the accessible active metal sites and higher surface area enhanced the catalytic properties of 3. Furthermore, the maintenance of catalytic efficiency over five cycles and reusability are illustrated and discussed in terms of the structural differences of the microporous frameworks. Thus, a preliminary reaction mechanism for the selective oxidation of styrene is proposed. This study not only provides a fascinating example of MOF chromism achieved by thermal activation and rehydration but also sheds some light on the relationship between pore-surface- or metal-engineered sites in MOFs and their heterogeneous catalytic performances.

Chromophore appended DPA-based copper(II) complexes with a diimine motif towards DNA binding and fragmentation studies

Mixed ligand copper(II) complexes [Cu(L1)(bpy)](ClO4)21 and [Cu(L2)(bpy)](ClO4)22 (where L1 = 1-(anthracen-9-yl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine, L2 = 1-(pyren-1-yl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) were synthesised and characterised thoroughly via different analytical and spectroscopic techniques i.e., UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, HRMS and EPR spectroscopy. The molecular structures of the synthesised complexes were obtained using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Both complexes exhibited penta-coordinated and acquired distorted square pyramidal geometry. The redox behaviour of complexes 1 and 2 was investigated by employing cyclic voltammetry. The DNA binding study was carried out by UV-vis spectrophotometry using double-stranded salmon sperm DNA (ds-ss-DNA). The binding constant (Kb) values of 1 and 2 were 0.11 × 104 M-1 and 1.05 × 104 M-1, respectively, which indicates that 2 has better binding ability than 1. This might be due to the higher conjugative abilities with the extended surface area of the aromatic pyrene ring compared to the anthracene moiety. The fluorescence quenching experiments were also performed with EB bound DNA (EB-DNA) and Stern-Volmer constant (KSV) values were calculated as 1.23 × 105 M-1 and 1.39 × 105 M-1 for 1 and 2, respectively, suggesting that 2 showed stronger interaction with ss-DNA than 1. The molecular docking data support the DNA-binding studies, with the sites and mode of interactions against B-DNA varying with 1 and 2. Evaluation of the DNA binding properties of the complexes to linearized plasmid DNA indicated that 2 had modest DNA binding properties, which is a pre-requisite for a genotoxic agent. The effect of 1 and 2 on cell survival was analysed using HeLa cells by MTT assay and it was observed that the IC50 values of 1 and 2 were 43.7 μM and 18.6 μM, respectively. Our study paves the way for the designing of bio-inspired novel mixed metal complexes, which shows promising results for further exploration of molecular and mechanistic studies towards the development of non-platinum based economical metallodrugs.

Field induced single ion magnet behavior in CoII complexes in a distorted square pyramidal geometry

We report three CoII-based complexes with the general formula [CoII(L)(X)2] by changing the halide/pseudo-halide ions [X = NCSe (1SeCN); Cl (2Cl) and Br (3Br)]. The obtained τ5 and CShM values confirm a distorted square pyramidal geometry around the CoII ion in all these complexes. In these three complexes, the central CoII ion is situated above the basal plane of the square pyramidal geometry. The extent of distortion from the ideal SPY-5 geometry differs upon changing the coordinating halide/pseudo-halide ion in these complexes. This essentially results in the alteration of the anisotropic parameter D and hence impacts the magnetic properties in these complexes. This phenomenon has been corroborated with the aid of theoretical investigations. All these complexes display field-induced SIM behaviour with magnetic relaxation occurring through a combination of processes depending on the applied dc magnetic field values and dilution.

Are Zn(II) pincer complexes efficient apoptosis inducers? a deep insight into their activity against A549 lung cancer cells

To expand the array of chemotherapeutic drugs, earth-abundant metal complexes are found to be the future direction. In this regard, new zinc(II) complexes 1-3 of 8-aminoquinoline-based pincer ligands were synthesized, characterized and tested for their anticancer activity. The IC50 values of these complexes were estimated by an MTT assay to be 16.35-17.95 μM and 33.35-40 μM against A549 lung and MCF-7 breast cancer cells respectively. Among them, 3 was slightly better than the other complexes and, thus, subjected to detailed studies. Moreover, the ligand corresponding to 3 was less active against both the cell lines than the complex. Further, 3 showed no toxicity against normal fibroblast cell line L929, which instantly elevated the drug characteristic of our complex. An AO-EB staining assay revealed that 3 can induce apoptosis in A549, and it was quantified by flow cytometry as 22.77%. Moreover, the depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential determined by JC-1 staining indicated excess ROS production sites in the mitochondria, which was confirmed by carboxy-H2DCFDA staining. Interestingly, the present complexes show better activity than that of the standard drug cisplatin against A549 cells. Overall, the studies provided promising results that can be extended for clinical applications.

Electrocatalytic Atom Transfer Radical Addition with Turbocharged Organocopper(II) Complexes

The utility and scope of Cu-catalyzed halogen atom transfer chemistry have been exploited in the fields of atom transfer radical polymerization and atom transfer radical addition, where the metal plays a key role in radical formation and minimizing unwanted side reactions. We have shown that electrochemistry can be employed to modulate the reactivity of the Cu catalyst between its active (CuI) and dormant (CuII) states in a variety of ligand systems. In this work, a macrocyclic pyridinophane ligand (L1) was utilized, which can break the C-Br bond of BrCH2CN to release •CH2CN radicals when in complex with CuI. Moreover, the [CuI(L1)]+ complex can capture the •CH2CN radical to form a new species [CuII(L1)(CH2CN)]+ in situ that, on reduction, exhibits halogen atom transfer reactivity 3 orders of magnitude greater than its parent complex [CuI(L1)]+. This unprecedented rate acceleration has been identified by electrochemistry, successfully reproduced by simulation, and exploited in a Cu-catalyzed bulk electrosynthesis where [CuII(L1)(CH2CN)]+ participates as a radical donor in the atom transfer radical addition of BrCH2CN to a selection of styrenes. The formation of these turbocharged catalysts in situ during electrosynthesis offers a new approach to the Cu-catalyzed organic reaction methodology.

H(N3)dap (Hdap = 2,6-Diaminopurine) Recognition by Cu2(EGTA): Structure, Physical Properties, and Density Functional Theory Calculations of [Cu4(μ-EGTA)2(μ-H(N3)dap)2(H2O)2]·7H2O

Reactions in water between the Cu2(µ-EGTA) chelate (EGTA = ethylene-bis(oxyethyleneimino)tetraacetate(4-) ion) and Hdap in molar ratios 1:1 and 1:2 yield only blue crystals of the ternary compound [Cu4(μ-EGTA)2(μ-H(N3)dap)2(H2O)2]·7H2O (1), which has been studied via single-crystal X-ray diffraction and various physical methods (thermal stability, spectral and magnetic properties), as well as DFT theoretical calculations. In the crystal, uncoordinated water is disordered. The tetranuclear complex molecule also has some irrelevant disorder in an EGTA-ethylene moiety. In the complex molecule, both bridging organic molecules act as binucleating ligands. There are two distorted five- and two six-coordinated Cu(II) centers. Each half of EGTA acts as a tripodal tetradentate Cu(II) chelator, with a mer-NO2 + O(ether, distal) conformation. Hdap exhibits the tautomer H(N3)dap, with the dissociable H-atom on its less basic N-heterocyclic atom. These features favor the efficient cooperation between Cu-N7 or Cu-N9 bonds with appropriate O-EGTA atoms, as N6-H···O or N3-H···O interligand interactions, respectively. The bridging role of both organics determines the tetranuclear dimensionality of the complex. In this crystal, such molecules associate in zig-zag chains built by alternating π-π interactions between the five- or six-atom rings of Hdap ligands of adjacent molecules. DFT theoretical calculations (using two different theoretical models and characterized by the quantum theory of "atoms in molecules") reveal the importance of these π-π interactions between Hdap ligands, as well as those corresponding to the referred hydrogen bonds in the contributed tetranuclear molecule.

Vanadyl as a Spectroscopic Probe of Tunable Ligand Donor Strength in Bimetallic Complexes

Incorporation of secondary metal ions into heterobimetallic complexes has emerged as an attractive strategy for rational tuning of compounds' properties and reactivity, but direct solution-phase spectroscopic interrogation of tuning effects has received less attention than it deserves. Here, we report the assembly and study of a series of heterobimetallic complexes containing the vanadyl ion, [VO]²⁺, paired with monovalent cations (Cs⁺, Rb⁺, K⁺, Na⁺, and Li⁺) and a divalent cation (Ca²⁺). These complexes, which can be isolated in pure form or generated in situ from a common monometallic vanadyl-containing precursor, enable experimental spectroscopic and electrochemical quantification of the influence of the incorporated cations on the properties of the vanadyl moiety. The data reveal systematic shifts in the V-O stretching frequency, isotropic hyperfine coupling constant for the vanadium center, and V(V)/V(IV) reduction potential in the complexes. These shifts can be interpreted as charge density effects parametrized through the Lewis acidities of the cations, suggesting broad potential for the vanadyl ion to serve as a spectroscopic probe in multimetallic species.

Coordination-Driven Salamo-Salen-Salamo-Type Multinuclear Transition Metal(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, Luminescence, Transformation of Configuration, and Nuclearity Induced by the Acetylacetone Anion

A flexible polydentate Salamo-Salen-Salamo hybrid ligand H₄L was designed and synthesized, which has rich pockets (salamo and salen pockets) so that it may have fascinating coordination patterns with transition metal(II) ions. Four multinuclear transition metal(II) complexes, novel butterfly-shaped homotetranuclear [Ni₄(L)(μ₁-OAc)₂(μ_1,3-OAc)₂(H₂O)_0.5(CH₃CH₂OH)_3.5]·4CH₃CH₂OH (1), helical homotrinuclear [Zn₃(L)(μ₁-OAc)₂]·2CH₃CH₂OH (2), double-helical homotrinuclear [Cu₂(H₂L)₂]·2CH₃CN (3), and mononuclear [Ni(H₂L)]·1.5CH₃COCH₃ (4), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The effects of different anions [OAc^- and (O₂C₅H₇)^2-] on the complexation behavior of H₄L with transition metal(II) ions were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The fluorescent properties of the four complexes were studied with zebrafish, which are expected to be a potential light-emitting material. Ultimately, interaction region indicator (IRI) valuations, Hirshfeld surface analyses, density functional theory (DFT & TD-DFT), electrostatic potential analyses (ESP), and simulations were carried out to further demonstrate the weak interactions and electronic properties of the free ligand and its four complexes.

P,N-type phosphaalkene-based Ir(i) complexes: synthesis, coordination chemistry, and catalytic applications

Iridium P,N phosphaalkene complexes show a rich coordination chemistry with unusual twofold C–H activation. The Ir(i) chloride complex can be applied for C–N coupling and alcohol upgrading reactions.

Thiosemicarbazone N-Heterocyclic Cu(II) complexes inducing nuclei DNA and mitochondria damage in hepatocellular carcinoma cells

The α-N-Heterocyclic thiosemicarbazones and their metal complexes have been widely investigated as anticancer and antibacterial agents for their broad spectrum of pharmacological properties. Thus, two thiosemicarbazone-based Cu(II) complexes, [Cu₂(ptpc)I₂] (1) and [Cu(qtpc)I] (2) with thiosemicarbazone ligand (ptpc = 2-(di(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)-N-(2-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-hydrazine-1-carbothioamide, qtpc = 2-(quinolin-8-ylmethylene)-N-(2-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide) were synthesized and evaluated for their biological activities. Complexes 1 and 2 are superior to cisplatin in vitro antiproliferative activities toward hepatocellular carcinoma cell line with the half maximal inhibitory concentration value of 0.2 and 2 μM, respectively. A series of spectroscopic assays and the DNA cleavage experiments showed that both complexes can change and distort the conformation of DNA. Molecular docking experiment further demonstrated that complex 1 binds to DNA mainly in groove mode. Meanwhile, benefiting from their good liposolubility, complexes 1 and 2 could easily enter cells, which further triggers cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Moreover, complexes 1 and 2 caused serious mitochondrial damage, associating with increased the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Ca²⁺, decreased adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content and mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψ_m), and transformed mitochondrial morphology. These findings indicated that complexes 1 and 2 might exert their anticancer activity by inducing DNA and mitochondrial damage simultaneously.

Synthesis of a Bench-Stable Manganese(III) Chloride Compound: Coordination Chemistry and Alkene Dichlorination

The complex [MnCl₃(OPPh₃)₂] (1) is a bench-stable and easily prepared source of MnCl₃. It is prepared by treating acetonitrile solvated MnCl₃ (2) with Ph₃PO and collecting the resulting blue precipitate. 1 is useful in coordination reactions by virtue of the labile Ph₃PO ligands, and this is demonstrated through the synthesis of {Tpm*}MnCl₃ (3). In addition, methodologies in synthesis that rely on difficult or cumbersome to prepare solutions of reactive MnCl₃ can be accomplished using 1 instead. This is demonstrated through alkene dichlorinations in a wide range of solvents, open to air, and with good substrate scope. Light-accelerated halogenation and radical sensitive experiments support a radical mechanism involving stepwise Cl-atom transfer(s) from 1.

Synthesis, Coordination Chemistry, and Mechanistic Studies of P,N-Type Phosphaalkene-Based Rh(I) Complexes

The synthesis of P,N-phosphaalkene ligands, py-CH═PMes* (1, py = 2-pyridyl, Mes* = 2,4,6-tBu-C₆H₂) and the novel quin-CH═PMes* (2, quin = 2-quinolinyl) is described. The reaction with [Rh(μ-Cl)cod]₂ produces Rh(I) bis(phosphaalkene) chlorido complexes 3 and 4 with distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination environments. Complexes 3 and 4 show a pronounced metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) from Rh into the ligand P═C π* orbitals. Upon heating, quinoline-based complex 4 undergoes twofold C-H bond activation at the o-tBu groups of the Mes* substituents to yield the cationic bis(phosphaindane) Rh(I) complex 5, which could not be observed for the pyridine-based analogue 3. Using sub- or superstoichiometric amounts of AgOTf the C-H bond activation at an o-tBu group of one or at both Mes* was detected, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) studies suggest an oxidative proton shift pathway as an alternative to a previously reported high-barrier oxidative addition at Rh(I). The Rh(I) mono- and bis(phosphaindane) triflate complexes 6 and 7, respectively, undergo deprotonation at the benzylic CH₂ group of the phosphaindane unit in the presence of KOtBu to furnish neutral, distorted square-planar Rh(I) complexes 8 and 9, respectively, with one of the P,N ligands being dearomatized. All complexes were fully characterized, including multinuclear NMR, vibrational, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, as well as single-crystal X-ray and elemental analysis.

Iridium and rhodium complexes bearing a silyl-bipyridine pincer ligand: synthesis, structures and catalytic activity for C-H borylation of arenes

Unsaturated 16-electron iridium and rhodium complexes bearing a silyl-bipyridine-based SiNN-pincer ligand (Bpy^SiNN) were synthesised and characterised by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. The iridium-Bpy^SiNN complex facilitated the catalytic C(sp²)-H borylation of arenes to give arylboronate esters in high yields (≥93%) under mild conditions (∼40 °C).

Iron(II) Mediated Deazotation of Benzyl Azide: Trapping and Subsequent Transformations of the Benzaldimine Fragment

The mono-benzaldimine (HN═CHPh) complex [(^tBupyrpyrr₂)Fe(HN═CHPh)] (1-HN═CHPh) has been prepared by reaction of [(^tBupyrpyrr₂)Fe(OEt₂)] (1-OEt₂) (^tBupyrpyrr₂ = 2,6-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-pyrrolyl)pyridine) with one equivalent of benzyl azide. Compound 1-HN═CHPh retains the cis-divacant octahedral coordination geometry akin to 1, as established by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. A bis-HN═CHPh complex [(^tBupyrpyrr₂)Fe(HN═CHPh)₂] (2) was also prepared by the addition of two equivalents of benzyl azide to 1, and its molecular structure exhibits the two HN═CHPh ligands coordinated trans to each other, thereby forming a square pyramidal coordination geometry at the Fe^II center. Reaction of 1 with excess benzyl azide yields [(^tBupyrpyrr₂)Fe(HN═CHPh)₂·PhCHNCH(NH₂)Ph] (2-PhCHNCH(NH₂)Ph), which contains an unstable benzylideneamino phenyl methanamine fragment, effectively hydrogen bonded to 2. Thermolysis of 2 or 2-PhCHNCH(NH₂)Ph releases the HN═CHPh self-coupling products hydrobenzamide (A), N-benzylidine benzylamine (B), and benzonitrile (C). Under catalytic conditions, free HN═CHPh (cis/trans-HN═CHPh mixture) is produced using 2.5 mol % of 1 in 90% spectroscopic yield. These studies provide a clearer understanding for the conversion of the HN═CHPh in 2 or 2-PhCHNCH(NH₂)Ph to the C-C and C-N coupled products. Reduction of 1-HN═CHPh with KC₈ yields the reductively coupled benzylamide complex [K(OEt₂)]₂[(^tBupyrpyrr₂)₂Fe₂(μ₂-NHCHPhCHPhNH)] (3) as the result of a new C-C bond formed between two radical benzylamide fragments.

Isocyanate deoxygenation by a molecular magnesium silanide

The stoichiometric reactivity of a β-diketiminato (BDI) magnesium silanide towards a variety of organic isocyanates has been assessed. While the primary outcome of reactions of t-BuNCO, DippNCO and CyNCO was the production of β-diketiminato magnesium siloxide adducts of the isonitrile resulting from isocyanate deoxygenation, analogous treatment with i-PrNCO led to multiple products, four of which have been positively identified. Although the specificity of this latter reaction was hampered by competitive isocycanate addition at the γ-methine carbon of the BDI supporting ligand, the identification of [{i-PrNCO}CH{(Me)CNDipp}Mg{Me₂PhSi}C(O)Ni-Pr]₆ provided corroborative evidence for the likely generation of sila-amidate intermediates in all four reactions under study. The formation of [{Me₂PhSi}C(O)NR]^- anions as the most likely initial species formed en route to isonitrile and siloxide formation was, therefore, validated by a computational density functional theory (DFT) study.

Does H3O+ Really Act as a Ligand in the Solid State?

The evidence for the existence of metal complexes containing H₃O⁺ as a ligand in the solid state is examined. Each of the 68 examples in the Cambridge Structural Database in which H₃O⁺ is bound to a transition metal, lanthanoid, actinoid, or main group metal ion is detailed and critically appraised. It is concluded that none of the reported examples of complexes containing coordinated H₃O⁺ have been unequivocally characterized and that they result from either curation errors or misinterpretations of the crystallographic data. These conclusions are supported by computational techniques, which show that three purported H₃O⁺ complexes based on the 1,4,7,10,13,16,21,24-octa-azabicyclo(8.8.8)hexacosane azacryptand skeleton are better described as aqua complexes, with protonation occurring at the amine ligand.

Electrochemical Exploration of Active Cu-Based Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Catalysis through Ligand Modification

The intersection between Cu-catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and organometallic mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) has been recently shown to be a result of competition between the Cu^I and Cu^II complexes of polyamine ligands for the same organic free radical. The tetradentate ligands N,N'-bis-2'-pyridylmethyl-ethane-1,2-diamine (L¹) and N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis-2'-pyridylmethyl-ethane-1,2-diamine (L²) form stable Cu complexes which, depending on their oxidation state, can either liberate or complex organic radicals. Herein, we show that this process may be affected by subtle changes to the ligand system. Switching from a tertiary amine (L²) to a secondary amine (L¹) retains ATRP and OMRP activity through a series of cyclic voltammetry measurements in the presence of the initiator bromoacetonitrile.

The crystal structure of the deca-aluminum alkoxide cluster Al10O4(OH)8 L 14 (L = 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexa-fluoro-propan-2-olate)

The title centrosymmetric deca­aluminum cluster, Al₁₀O₄(OH)₈(C₃HF₆O)₁₄, contains two OAl₄ units and a central Al₂(O)₂ bridge.

In the title centrosymmetric cluster compound, hexa­kis­(μ₂-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexa­fluoro­propan-2-olato)octa­kis­(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexa­fluoro­propan-2-olato)octa-μ₂-hydroxido-di-μ₄-oxido-di-μ₃-oxido-deca­aluminium, [Al₁₀(C₃HF₆O)₁₄(OH)₈O₄] (C₄₂H₂₂Al₁₀F₈₄O₂₆), there is a central μ₄-OAl₄ moiety, which has six edges of which three contain μ(O)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexa­fluoro­propan-2-olate (L) ligands and two contain μ-OH groups each bridging two Al atoms along an edge. The sixth edge is occupied by a group containing a fifth aluminium atom [bis-μ(OH)-, μ₃(O)—AlL]. This last μ₃(O) group generates a centrosymmetric Al₂O₂ dimer, thus the μ₃(O) atom is linked to two Al atoms in the asymmetric unit as well as a third Al atom through a center of inversion. Three of the hexa­fluoro­propyl groups of the C₃HF₆O⁻ ligands are disordered and each was refined with two conformations with occupancies of 0.770 (3)/0.230 (3), 0.772 (3)/0.228 (3) and 0.775 (3)/0.225 (3). The five unique Al centers have coordination numbers varying from four to six with bond angles that show considerable distortions from regular geometry: for the four-coordinate atom, τ₄′ = 0.886, while three Al atoms are five-coordinate (τ₅ values = 0.098, 1.028, and 0.338) and one is distorted six-coordinate with O—Al—O bond angles ranging from 74.22 (9) to 171.59 (12)°. The geometry about the central O atom in the OAl₄ block is significantly distorted tetra­hedral (τ₄′ = 0.630) with Al—O—Al angles ranging from 95.50 (9) to 147.74 (13)°. The extended structure features numerous O—H⋯O, O—H⋯F, C—H⋯O and C—H⋯F hydrogen bonds and short F⋯F contacts.

Synthesis, structural characterization, protein binding, DNA cleavage and anticancer activity of fluorophore labelled copper(ii) complexes based on 1,8-naphthalimide conjugates

The synthesized copper complexes have good anticancer activity and induce an apoptotic mode of cell death.
