Synthesis of water-soluble CdS quantum dots for the fluorescence detection of tetracycline

An effective strategy for combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) entails the early detection of antibiotics during the initial stages of water treatment facilities. In this context, cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) were employed for the precise detection of tetracycline (TET), an emerging contaminant, in water. CdS QDs with fluorescence properties were synthesized by culturing Citrobacter freundii bacteria. The CdS QDs were characterized by spectroscopy techniques, and the quantum efficiency was estimated to be 55.8% which is ∼2-fold high compared to the standard rhodamine-B solution. The fluorescence of CdS QDs was quenched at 440 nm in the presence of TET. The linear range of TET was varied from 10 to 100 μM with a lower limit of detection of ∼23 nM. The CdS QDs were used to detect TET in river water, tap water, and milk which showed an excellent recovery rate. Therefore, the novel biosynthesis CdS QDs can be a significant fluorescence probe for the detection of TET that shows exceptional sensitivity and selectivity.

Development of in-situ electrochemical heavy metal ion sensor using integrated 1D/0D/1D hybrid by MWCNT and CQDs supported MnO2 nanomaterial

An integrated 1D/0D/1D hybrid nanomaterial was prepared from MWCNT supported carbon quantum dots @ MnO₂ nanomaterial for a sensitive and selective electrochemical heavy metal ion sensor by hydrothermal methods. The developed nanomaterials were characterized by various analytical methods such as FESEM, HRTEM, XRD, FTIR, EDX and elemental mapping study, and also its electrochemical properties of the prepared samples were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) analysis has been used to investigate the quantitative detection of heavy metal ions such as cadmium and chromium on modified electrodes under optimal conditions. The in-situ electrochemical sensitivity and selectivity of the samples were determined by varying various parameters, such as the concentration of heavy metal ions, different electrolytes and electrolyte pH. The observed DPV results show that prepared MWCNT (0.05 wt%) and CQD (0.1 wt%) supported MnO₂ nanoparticles show effective detection response for chromium (IV) metal ion. In particular, 0D CQD, 1D MWCNT, and MnO₂ hybrid nanostructures produced a synergistic effect among them, resulting in strong electrochemical performance of the prepared samples against the target metal ions.

Electrochemical detection of arsenic (III) hazardous chemicals using cubic CsPbBr3 single crystals: Structural insights from DFT study

Long-term exposure to the highly toxic heavy metal arsenic can harm ecological systems and pose serious health risks to humans. Arsenic pollutant in water and the food chain must be addressed, and active prompt detection of As(III) is essential. The development of an effective detection method for As(III) ions is urgently needed to slow the alarming growth of arsenic pollution in the environment and safeguard the well-being of future generations. This study presents the results of our exhaustive investigation into cubic CsPbBr₃ single crystals, the glassy carbon (GC) electrode modification with CsPbBr₃ single crystals prepared by direct solvent evaporation, as well as our observations of the material's remarkable electrocatalytic properties and exceptional anti-interference sensing of As(III) ions in neutral pH media. The developed CsPbBr₃/GC is exceptionally useful for the ultra-sensitive and specific identification of arsenic in water, exhibiting a detection limit of 0.381 μmol/L, a rapid response across a defined range of 0.1-25 μmol/L, and an ultra-sensitivity of 0.296 μA/μmolL^-1. CsPbBr₃/GCE (prepared without a specific reagent) is superior to other modified electrodes used as sensors in electrocatalytic activity, detection limit, analytical sensitivity, and stability response.

Analysis of impacts of exogenous pollutant bisphenol-A penetration on soybeans roots and their biological growth

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common chemical used in plastic production. BPA, which has the potential to be poisonous to plants, has lately emerged as a serious environmental concern owing to its extensive usage and release patterns. Prior study has only looked at how BPA affects plants up to a certain stage in their growth. The precise mechanism of toxicity, penetration of BPA, and damage to internal root tissues remains unknown. Therefore, the goal of this study was to examine the hypothesized mechanism for BPA-induced root cells by studying the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on the ultrastructure and function of root tip cells of soybean plants. We looked at plant changes in root cell tissues after BPA exposure. Further, the biological characteristics that responded to BPA stress were investigated, and the accumulation of BPA in the root, stem, and leaf of the soybean plant was systematically investigated by using FTIR and SEM analysis. The uptake of BPA is a key internal factor that contributes to changes in biological characteristics. Our findings provide insight into how BPA could alter plant root growth, which might contribute new knowledge toward a better scientific appraisal of the possible dangers of BPA exposure for plants.

Revealing the stability of CuWO4/g-C3N4 nanocomposite for photocatalytic tetracycline degradation from the aqueous environment and DFT analysis

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) is an emerging metal-free photocatalyst, however, engineering the photocatalytic efficiency for the effective degradation of hazardous molecules is still challenging. An unstable and low bandgap CuWO₄ was composited with g-C₃N₄ to achieve synergistic benefits of tuning the visible light responsiveness and stability of CuWO₄. CuWO₄/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite exhibited a relatively high visible light absorption region and the bandgap was modified from 2.77 to 2.53 eV evidenced via UV-DRS. Moreover, the fast electron transfer rate was observed with CuWO₄/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite as confirmed using PL and photocurrent studies. XRD, FT-IR, and HR-TEM analyses signified the formation of CuWO₄/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite. CuWO₄/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite showed enhanced photocatalytic degradation of Tetracycline (TC) about ∼7.4 fold greater than pristine g-C₃N₄ in 120 min. Notably, the OH^• and ^•O₂^- radicals played a most significant role in photocatalytic TC degradation. Furthermore, the energy band structure, density of state, and Bader charge analyses of these molecules were performed.

Chitosan magnetic graphene grafted polyaniline doped with cobalt oxide for removal of Arsenic(V) from water

The present study reports the successful functionalization/magnetization of bio-polymer to produce chitosan-magnetic graphene oxide grafted polyaniline doped with cobalt oxide (ChMGOP-Co₃O₄). Analytical techniques furrier transform infra-red (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to confirm the formation of ChMGOP-Co₃O₄. The effects of several experimental factors (solution pH, adsorbent dosage and coexisting ions) on the uptake of As(V) ions using ChMGOP-Co₃O₄ were examined through batch experiments. As(V) removal process was validated by experimentally and theoretically investigating the adsorption capacity, rate, and thermal effects. Thermodynamic parameters such as free energy (ΔG°), entropy (ΔS°) and enthalpy (ΔH°) were also calculated and were used to explain the mechanism of adsorption. Based on the results, the sorbent showed a high adsorption capacities (90.91 mg/g) at favorable neutral pH and superior removal efficiencies as high as 89% within 50 min. In addition, the adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir isotherm in compare to the Freundlich, due to its higher R² value (0.992 < 0.941). Meanwhile, the kinetic data revealed that the of As(V) adsorption was controlled by pseudo-second-order. Overall, the adsorption mechanism studies revealed a spontaneous endothermic nature with predominance of physisorption over chemisorption. This study indicated that ChMGOP-Co₃O₄ is an exceptional novel adsorbent material for the efficient isolation of As(V) from aqueous media.

Detection of trizole contaminated waste water using biocatalyst and effective biodegradation potential of flubendiamide

Flubendiamide is a new class of chemical pesticide with broad spectrum activity against lepidopteran pests. Due to limited approach and high specificity towards various non targeted organisms, the unrestricted application of this pesticide as a prominent alternate for organochlorine and organophosphate pesticides, causing serious environmental pollution. In this study, wastewater was used for the determination of microbial strains and pesticide degrading fungi. Microbial population and flubendiamide resistant fungal strains were characterized using enriched medium. Aerobic bacteria (6.38 ± 0.23 log CFU/mL), nitrifying bacteria (2.73 ± 0.31 CFU/mL), Lactobaillus (0.72 ± 0.03 log CFU/mL), actinomycetes (5.36 ± 0.27 log CFU/mL) and fungi (4.79 ± 0.22 log CFU/mL) were detected. The prominent fungi genera were, Fusarium, Trichoderma, Cladophialophora, Paecilomyces, Talaromyces, Penicillium, Aspergillus, Candida, Phyllosticta, Mycosphaerella, Ochroconis, and Mucor. Minimum inhibitory concentration of the rapidly growing organism (FR04) revealed its ability to tolerate up to 1250 mg/L flubendiamide concentration. Morphological, biochemical and molecular analysis revealed that the strain was Aspergillus terreus FR04. The residual pesticide was detected using a High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). High performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed that 89 ± 1.9% pesticide removal efficiency was observed in strain FR04 at optimized culture conditions (96 h, pH 6.5, 30 °C and 300 mg/L pesticide concentration). The strain FR04 degraded pollutants from the wastewater and improved water quality. A. terreu sFR04 is an indigenous fungus and has the ability to degrade trizole pesticides from the wastewater significantly.

Toxicity evaluation and oxidative stress response of fumaronitrile, a persistent organic pollutant (POP) of industrial waste water on tilapia fish (Oreochromis mossambicus)

The study was designed to determine the impact of acute toxicity of fumaronitrile exposure through tissue damaging, oxidative stress enzymes and histopathological studies in gills, liver and muscle cells of freshwater tilapia fish (Oreochromis mossambicus). In gill, liver, and muscle cells, biochemical indicators such as tissue damage enzymes (Acid Phosphatase (ACP), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), and Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)) and antioxidative enzymes (Superoxide Dismutase (SOD); Catalase (CAT); Glutathione-S-transferase (GST); Reduced Glutathione (GSH); Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) and Glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) were quantified in the time interval of 30, 60 and 90 days exposure to the fumaronitrile. After 90 days, under 6 ppb exposure conditions, the acid phosphatase (ACP) levels of fish increased significantly in the gills (3.439 μmol/mg protein/min), liver (1.743 μmol/mg protein/min), and muscles (2.158 μmol/mg protein/min). After 90 days of exposure to the same concentration and days, ALP activity increased significantly in gills (4.354 μmol/mg protein/min) and liver (1.754 μmol/mg protein/min), but muscle cells had a little decrease in ALP activity (2.158 μmol/mg protein/min). The LDH concentration in gills following treatment with fumaronitrile over a period of 0-90 days was 3.573 > 3.521 > 2.245 μmol/mg protein/min over 30 > 60 > 90 days. However, at the same dose and treatment duration, a greater LDH level of 0.499 μmol/mg protein/min was found in liver and muscle cells. Histopathological abnormalities in the gills, liver, and muscle cells of treated fish were also examined, indicating that fumaronitrile treatment generated the most severe histological changes. The current study reveals that fumaronitrile exposure has an effect on Oreochromis mossambicus survival, explaining and emphasising the risk associated with this POP exposure to ecosystems and human populations.

Removal of lead ions from wastewater using lanthanum sulfide nanoparticle decorated over magnetic graphene oxide

In this study, the new lanthanum sulfide nanoparticle (La₂S₃) was synthesized and incorporated onto magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) sheets surface to produce potential adsorbent (MGO@LaS) for efficient removal of lead ions (Pb²⁺) from wastewater. The synthesized MGO@LaS adsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The effective parameters on the adsorption process including solution pH (~5), adsorbent dosage (20 mg), contact time (40 min), initial Pb²⁺ concentration and temperature were studied. The removal efficiency was obtained >95% for lead ions at pH 5 with 20 mg adsorbent. To validate the adsorption rate and mechanism, the kinetic and thermodynamic models were studied based on experimental data. The Langmuir isotherm model was best fitted to initial equilibrium concentration with a maximum adsorption capacity of 123.46 mg/g. This indicated a monolayer adsorption pattern for Pb²⁺ ions over MGO@LaS. The pseudo-second-order as the kinetic model was best fitted to describe the adsorption rate due to high R² > 0.999 as compared first-order. A thermodynamic model suggested a chemisorption and physisorption adsorption mechanism for Pb²⁺ ions uptake into MGO@LaS at different temperatures; ΔG° < -5.99 kJ mol^-1 at 20 °C and ΔG° -18.2 kJ mol^-1 at 45 °C. The obtained results showed that the novel nanocomposite (MGO@LaS) can be used as an alternative adsorbent in wastewater treatment.

Knowledge extraction of sonophotocatalytic treatment for acid blue 113 dye removal by artificial neural networks

Removing decolorizing acid blue 113 (AB113) dye from textile wastewater is challenging due to its high stability and resistance to removal. In this study, we used an artificial neural network (ANN) model to estimate the effect of five different variables on AB113 dye removal in the sonophotocatalytic process. The five variables considered were reaction time (5-25 min), pH (3-11), ZnO dosage (0.2-1.0 g/L), ultrasonic power (100-300 W/L), and persulphate dosage (0.2-3 mmol/L). The most effective model had a 5-7-1 architecture, with an average deviation of 0.44 and R² of 0.99. A sensitivity analysis was used to analyze the impact of different process variables on removal efficiency and to identify the most effective variable settings for maximum dye removal. Then, an imaginary sonophotocatalytic system was created to measure the quantitative impact of other process parameters on AB113 dye removal. The optimum process parameters for maximum AB 113 removal were identified as 6.2 pH, 25 min reaction time, 300 W/L ultrasonic power, 1.0 g/L ZnO dosage, and 2.54 mmol/L persulfate dosage. The model created was able to identify trends in dye removal and can contribute to future experiments.

Polyhydroxybutyrate degradation by biocatalyst of municipal sludge water and degradation efficacy in sequencing batch biofilm reactor

The main aim of the study was to degrade poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (P(3HB)) in the sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) using biocatalyst. Enrichment method was used for the isolation of P(3HB) degrading bacteria. These bacterial strains were isolated from the wastewater sludge sample treated with P(3HB) sheets. A total of 75 bacteria were isolated after 60 days of incubation. The zone of clearance varied between 12 ± 1 mm and 19 ± 2 mm. Two bacterial strains (Nitrobacter vulgaris SW1 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa KS10) showed rapid PHB degradation activity on agar plates. Plate screening experiments confirmed PHB degrading ability of P. aeruginosa KS10 and N. vulgaris SW1. Biodegrading potential improved after 72 h fermentation period. The bacteria produced depolymerase and enzyme activity was maximum after 72 h. The sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) co-cultured with N. vulgaris SW1 and P. aeruginosa KS10 was operated to remove PHB from the wastewater. Biofilm in the reactor degraded PHB and the production of polyhydroxybutyrate depolymerase influenced on PHB degradation. Polyhydroxybutyrate degradation improved continuously and maximum degradation (95.6%) was achieved after 8 days. The degradation of biopolymers help to reduce environmental pollution associated with the petroleum based polymers.

Measurement of trace bisphenol A in drinking water with combination of immunochromatographic detection technology and SERS method

Sensitive and selective detection of target analyte is very important in many fields such as commodity inspection and quality monitoring. In this work, based on the principle of competitive immunoassay, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to establish a rapid and highly sensitive method for the detection of trace amounts of bisphenol A in water. Here, Raman molecule 5,5-dithiobis-2-nitrobenzoic acid and anti-BPA antibody were conjugated with Au (core)@Ag (shell) nanoparticle to serve as SERS nanoprobe. After the SERS nanoprobe is combined with the substance to be tested, it uses the siphon effect to pass through the test line and the charging line on the test strip. And the Raman test was performed on the T line with a Raman spectrometer. The detection limitation was 0.1 pg/mL. Compared with the reported gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, fluorescence analysis, and other detection methods, SERS ICA does not demand complicated sample preparation procedures, and has the advantages of simple detection methods, quick results, High sensitivity, good specificity, and low technical demands for laboratory environment and testers. In addition, Raman spectrometers have gradually developed to be portable, making it easier to meet the needs of on-site rapid and highly sensitive detection, and will show broad prospects for applications in the fields of biomedical diagnosis and food safety monitoring.

Supercritical Technology-Based Date Sugar Powder Production: Process Modeling and Simulation

Date palm fruits (Phoenix dactylifera) contain high levels of fructose and glucose sugars. These natural sugar forms are healthy, nutritional and easily assimilate into human metabolism. The successful production of soluble date sugar powder from nutritious date fruits would result in a new food product that could replace the commercial refined sugar. In this work, a novel process technology based on the supercritical extraction of sugar components from date pulp was modeled and simulated using Aspen Plus software. The process model consisted of three main steps that were individually simulated for their optimal working conditions as follows: (a) freeze-drying of the date pulp at −42 °C and 0.0001 bar; (b) supercritical extraction of the sugar components using a 6.77 wt.% water mixed CO2 solvent system at a pressure of 308 bar, temperature of 65 °C, and CO2 flow rate of 31,000 kg/h; and (c) spray-drying of the extract using 40 wt.% Gum Arabic as the carrier agent and air as drying medium at 150 °C. The overall production yield of the process showed an extraction efficiency of 99.1% for the recovery of total reducing sugars from the date fruit. The solubility of the as-produced date sugar powder was improved by the process selectivity, elimination of insoluble fiber contents, and the addition of Gum Arabic. The solubility of the final date sugar product was estimated as 0.89 g/g water.

Electrochemical process of early-stage corrosion detection based on N-doped carbon dots with superior Fe3+ responsiveness

Iron corrosion is a subject of great technological importance and extensive public concern. However, the highly efficient detection of iron corrosion at early stage is still a challenging task. Herein, bright fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with superior response to Fe³⁺ were prepared by simple solvothermal process based on citric acid and ammonia. The obtained CDs are able to rapidly, sensitively and selectively respond to Fe³⁺. The quantitative analysis showed that the CDs exhibited a linear response to Fe³⁺ in the range of 10 to 300 µM, with a detection limit of 0.9 μM. And the fluorescence quenching of CDs was obvious enough to be detected by the naked eyes. Such promising responsiveness of CDs offers a great opportunity for real-time and visual detection of Fe³⁺ during electrochemical corrosion process. In addition, due to the excellent stability and solubility of CDs, patterned papers and hydrogels have been fabricated utilizing cellulose and PVA as matrices. The as-prepared biocompatible, environmental-friendly and disposable CDs based fluorescent materials were successfully used for detecting the degree of iron corrosion. This could provide a simple and visual strategy for monitoring the safety of structural metal materials.

Photocatalytic effect of CuO nanoparticles flower-like 3D nanostructures under visible light irradiation with the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye for environmental application

The present research work focuses on preparing 3D transition metal doped copper oxide nanostructures through sonication method and to investigate the effect of doping different transition metal into copper oxide (CuO) on the basic properties of CuO nanoparticles and, to study the photocatalytic behaviour of the doped CuO samples. The morphological studies performed with the help of SEM revealed the formation of flower like CuO 3D nanostructures for all the doped samples. The slight shift in the position of peaks in the x-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirms that doping has been successfully done into CuO. Also, the sharp diffraction peaks suggest the polycrystalline nature of the sample with monoclinic structure. The UV-vis absorption analysis reveals a bandgap of 2.26, 2.12 and 2.15 eV for the CuO samples doped with nickel, zinc, and iron respectively via Tauc plot. The photocatalytic performance of the samples tested through the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye suggests that samples doped with Zn shows better degradation. Thus, it is evident that the morphology and the optical properties of the CuO can be tailored by doping transition metal into it.

Mechanochemical synthesis of ternary heterojunctions TiO2(A)/TiO2(R)/ZnO and TiO2(A)/TiO2(R)/SnO2 for effective charge separation in semiconductor photocatalysis: A comparative study

TiO₂, ZnO, and SnO₂ metal oxides were synthesized by the sol-gel method and heterojunctions were fabricated by combining TiO₂ with either ZnO or SnO₂ in a 1:1 ratio using mechanochemical ball milling process. The ball milling process promotes phase transition of TiO₂ from anatase to rutile and yields ternary heterojunction of the type TiO₂(A)/TiO₂(R)/ZnO and TiO₂(A)/TiO₂(R)/SnO₂ (A-anatase and R-rutile). These ternary heterojunctions were characterized by various analytical techniques and its photocatalytic efficiency is evaluated using 4-Chloro Phenol as a model compound under UV and solar light. The enhanced catalytic activity of TiO₂(A)/TiO₂(R)/ZnO heterojunction is attributed to the formation of Ti³⁺-V_o defect states which leads to the efficient charge carrier separation. During the ball milling process severe crystal deformation takes place in TiO₂ and ZnO lattices by creating crystal lattice distortion which leads to the formation of defects due to valency mismatch between Ti⁴⁺ and Zn²⁺. A mechanistic pathway is proposed for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ternary heterojunctions.

In-situ thermal phase transition and structural investigation of ferroelectric tetragonal barium titanate nanopowders with pseudo-cubic phase

Optimization and miniaturization of existing electronic devices require the development of advanced nanostructured materials with high phase and structural purity. Over the past decade, barium titanate (BaTiO₃) has attracted considerable attention due to its outstanding ferroelectric and dielectric properties. The present study involved the investigation of the phase transition and structural stability of tetragonal BaTiO₃ nanopowders with pseudo-cubic phase using an in-situ high resolution and high temperature X-ray diffraction method. Under ambient conditions, the coexistence the tetragonal and cubic phases with weight fractions of 75.7% and 24.3%, respectively, was determined in BaTiO₃. In the temperature range of 25 °C-300 °C, phase boundaries of BaTiO₃ (180 nm in size) exhibiting several phases were detected. The phase transformation behavior, relative crystal phase content, lattice parameters, crystallite size, and tetragonality of the BaTiO₃ nanopowders were established by the Rietveld refinement method at the onset temperature from 25 °C to 300 °C. Up to 150 °C, the nanopowders exhibited a complete transition of the cubic phase. Additionally, a complete tetragonal to cubic transformation was accomplished by a decrease of tetragonality at 125 °C and an increase in the crystallite size at 300 °C.

Synergistic effect of sonication on photocatalytic oxidation of pharmaceutical drug carbamazepine

Photocatalytic, sono-photocatalytic oxidation of pharmaceutical drug of carbamazepine was successfully carried out using Ag/AgCl supported BiVO4 catalyst. For this purpose, firstly, photocatalytic oxidation was optimized by central composite design methodology and then synergistic effect of sonication was investigated. Low frequency (20 kHz) probe type and high frequency (850 kHz) plate type sonication at pulse and continuous mode were studied to degrade the carbamazepine (CBZ) containing wastewater. Pulse duties of 1:5 and 5:1 (on : off) were tested using the high frequency sonication system in the sono-photocatalytic oxidation of CBZ. The effects of frequency, power density measured from calorimetry by changing amplitudes were discussed in the sono-photocatalytic oxidation of CBZ. Complete carbamazepine removal was achieved at the optimum conditions of 5 ppm CBZ initial concentration with 1.5 g/L of catalysts loading and at an alkaline pH of 10 at the end of 4 h of photocatalytic reaction under visible LED light irradiation. Both low frequency and high frequency sonication systems caused an increase in photocatalytic efficiency in a shorter treatment time of 60 min. CBZ removal increased from 44% to 65.42% in low frequency sonication of 20 kHz at the amplitude of 20% (0.15 W/mL power density). In the case of high frequency ultrasonic system (850 kHz), CBZ removal increased significantly from 44% to 89.5 % at 75% amplitude (0.12 W/mL power density) within 60 min of reaction. Continuous mode sonication was observed to be more effective than that of pulse mode sonication not only for degradation efficiency and also for electrical energy consumption needed to degrade CBZ. Sono-catalytic oxidation was also conducted with simulated wastewater that contains SO42-, CO32-, NO3-, Cl- anions and natural organic component of fulvic acid. The CBZ degradation was inhibited slightly in the presence of NO3- and Cl-, and fulvic acid, however, the existence of SO42- and CO32- increased the degradation degree of CBZ. Evaluating the detection efficacy of advanced bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles for heavy metals, hazardous materials and pesticides of leachate in contaminated groundwater

During the decomposition of trashes, leachate is created and leaching is gradually pollutes the surface and groundwater. Thus, the most severe ecological impact is the risk of ground water pollution because of collection of leachate from unlined insecure landfills. Due to the low biodegradable organic strength, irregular productivity and composition, the environmentally neglected landfill leachate treatment is challenging. This work was conducted on a synthetically effective bimetallic surface enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) nanosensor by gold/silver-bimetallic nanoparticles (Au/Ag-NPs), and used for the specific detection of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill leachate in groundwater. The optical study of Au/Ag-NPs led to reflections from Ag cores and small Au shells. The structural studies represent the FCC structure of Au/Ag-NPs. The core-shell nanocrevice NPs with particle size of 23 nm played an important role with plasmonic behaviour enhances the electromagnetic excitation to achieve SERS detection and plasmonic photocatalysis. Thus, obtained results clearly show that Au was successfully added to Ag-NPs, and its existence can also be confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDAX). The prepared SERS based sensors have the potential to detect aromatic hydrocarbon, pesticides and heavy metals from environmentally ignored MSW landfill leachate. In general, the application of this new synergetic strategy of the photocatalytic degradation of leachate was irradiated by visible wavelength with the rate constant of 0.0036/min, 0.0047/min and 0.005/min by Ag-NPs, Au-NPs and Au/Ag-NPs respectively. Overall, this is the only study achieved efficiently with photocatalytic degradation and SERS detection of environmentally ignored real sample (leachate) to make pollutant free homeland aquifers.

Green sporopollenin supported cyanocalixarene based magnetic adsorbent for pesticides removal from water: Kinetic and equilibrium studies

In this study, magnetic sporopollenin supported cyanocalixarene (MSP-CyCalix) nanocomposite was synthesized and introduced as an adsorbent material for the removal of pesticides from aqueous media. MSP-CyCalix was characterized by different analytical techniques FTIR, SEM, EDX, BET, VSMand TEM. Chlorpyrifos and hexaconazole pesticides were chosen as model analytes solutions for testing the adsorption efficiency of MSP-CyCalix adsorbent. The adsorption results showed that the incorporated cyano functional groups significantly increased the chemical reactivity and adsorption capacity for pesticides. To obtain the highest possible performance, experimental parameters such as pH, salt, dosage and time were optimized. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms models showed that pesticide adsorption process was well fitted with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models with a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.88 mg g^-1 and 12.34 mg g^-1 and a removal efficiency of >90% for both pesticides. Lastly, MSP-CyCalix maintained a removal efficiency of >80% for ten cycles and 60% after the eleventh cycles of usage. The results proved that MSP-CyCalix nanocomposite can be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of pesticide residues from water.

Rapid and highly selective electrochemical sensor based on ZnS/Au-decorated f-multi-walled carbon nanotube nanocomposites produced via pulsed laser technique for detection of toxic nitro compounds

Novel ZnS/Au/f-multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanostructures were produced via a pulsed laser-assisted technique followed by a wet chemical process. ZnS nanospheres were synthesized via pulsed laser ablation of a Zn target in DMSO, which was used as a solvent and sulfur source. Notably, no additional sulfur sources, surfactants, or reducing agents were used during the synthesis. The structure and morphology of the prepared materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The fabricated electrochemical sensor based on ZnS/Au/f-MWCNT nanocomposites exhibited rapid and highly selective detection of a toxic pollutant, namely 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Linear sweep voltammetry analysis revealed that the optimized ZnS/Au10/f-MWCNT3 nanocomposite displayed a wide linear dynamic response (10-150 μM) with high sensitivity (0.8084μAμM^-1cm^-2) and low limit of detection (30 nM). The excellent 4-NP sensing performance of the modified electrode was attributed to the availability of numerous active sites (electrochemical surface area=0.00369μFcm^-2) and an enhanced electron transfer rate. Interference and stability studies were also conducted. A 100-fold excess of competing ions (Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Cl^-, NO₃^-, 4-AP, AA, and 2-NP) did not interfere with the selective detection of 4-NP. The newly fabricated ZnS/Au10/f-MWCNT3 nanocomposite could be an effective sensor for the selective and sensitive detection of toxic organic nitro compounds.

Synthesis of porous 2D layered nickel oxide-reduced graphene oxide (NiO-rGO) hybrid composite for the efficient electrochemical detection of epinephrine in biological fluid

In the present research work, 2D-Porous NiO decorated graphene nanocomposite was synthesized by hydrothermal method to monitored the concentration of epinephrine (EPI). The morphology (SEM and TEM) results confirmed 2D-Porous NiO nanoparticles firmly attached over graphene nanosheets. FTIR and XPS analysis confirmed the formation of nickel oxide formation and complete reduction of GO to rGO. The electrochemical activity of the proposed NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode on epinephrine was analyzed by simple cyclic voltammetry technique. The proposed low cost NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode showed excellent catalytic activity over GCE and rGO/GCE electrodes. Due to its high conductivity and charge transfer ability of the NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode exhibited high sensitivity of EPI at optimized conditions. The anodic peak current of the EPI linearly increases with increasing the concertation of EPI. A wide linear range (50 μM-1000 μM) was achieved with high correlation coefficient (R² = 0.9986) and the limit of detection (LOD) of NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode was calculated to be 10 μM. NiO-rGO/GCE electrode showed good stability and repeatability towards the EPI oxidation. Mainly, the proposed NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode showed good sensitivity of EPI in the human biological fluid with high recovery percentage. The low cost, NiO-rGO/GCE electrode could be the promising sensor electrode for the detection of Epinephrine in the real samples.

Fabrication of novel AgVO3/BiOI nanocomposite photocatalyst with photoelectrochemical activity towards the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation

In the present work, a visible light driven AgVO₃/BiOI nanocomposite photocatalyst with different wt % (1, 2, 3) of AgVO₃ was fabricated by using facile hydrothermal method. Further, the nanocomposite was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, UV-vis DRS, photoluminescence and photoelectrochemical studies. The structural characterization showed nanorods on nanosheet surface. Among different AgVO₃ loaded samples, the photocatalytic efficiency of 1 wt % AgVO₃/BiOI nanocomposite was found to be comparatively higher than the pure BiOI and AgVO₃. The photodegradation rate constant values of pure BiOI, AgVO₃ and 1, 2, 3 wt % AgVO₃/BiOI nanocomposites are 0.006, 0.0033, 0.0255, 0.01575, 0.0116 min^-1 respectively. This enhanced photocatalytic activity was due to the increasing visible light absorption ability and efficient separation of the charge carriers. Thereby, the 1 wt % AgVO₃/BiOI nanocomposite photocatalyst exhibited increased photodegradation activity, photostability and recyclability characteristics. The radical trapping experiment confirmed the role of OH and h⁺ in the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. Based on this, the probable mechanism of degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation has also been proposed. Hence, we believe it could be a promising material that can be employed for the photodegradation of organic pollutants present in wastewater.

Microwave-assisted green synthesis of fluorescent carbon quantum dots from Mexican Mint extract for Fe3+ detection and bio-imaging applications

Biomass-derived carbon quantum dots have drawn special interest owing to their admirable photostability, biocompatibility, fluorescence, high solubility, sensitivity and environmentally friendly properties. In the present work, the Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs) was synthesized from the Plectranthus amboinicus (Mexican Mint) leaves via the microwave-assisted reflux method. The strong absorption peaks observed from UV-vis spectra at 291 and 330 nm corresponds to the π-π* and n-π* transitions, respectively, reveal the formation of CQDs. The synthesized CQDs showed bright blue fluorescence under UV irradiation with a fluorescence quantum yield of 17% and a maximum emission of 436 nm in the blue region at an excitation wavelength of 340 nm. The HRTEM analysis elucidates that the synthesized CQDs were crystalline and spherical in shape with a particle size of 2.43 ± 0.02 nm. The FT-IR spectroscopy confirms the presence of the different functional groups such as -OH, -CH, CO and C-O. The chemical composition of CQD was revealed through XPS analysis. The synthesized CQDs were used as a fluorescent probe to detect different metal ions, where high selectivity was obtained for Fe³⁺ ions through quenching phenomenon. The emission intensity of CQD showed a good linear relationship with R² = 0.9111 with the concentration of Fe³⁺ ions in the range of 0-15 μM. The fluorescence emission of CQD was turned OFF upon the binding of Fe³⁺ ions and turned - ON with the addition of ascorbic acid. With this fluorescent turn ON-OFF behaviour of CQD, the NOT and IMPLICATION logic gates were constructed and studied for different input conditions. The biocompatibility of CQD was tested via MTT assay using MCF7 breast cancer cell line, which revealed that CQD synthesized from the Mexican Mint leaves possess less cytotoxicity. Further, the prepared CQD was applied effectively as fluorescent probes in a cell imaging application.

Studies on the spectrometric analysis of metallic silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using Basella alba leaf for the antibacterial activities

In this present investigation, an aqueous Basella alba leaves extract was used to synthesize AgNPs. The green synthesis approach is carried out in our work due to non-toxic, less cost, and ecofriendly methods. FTIR spectra are used to confirm the biomolecules present in B.alba leaves extract along with AgNPs and these compounds are responsible for Ag particle from micro to nanostructure. The FCC structure and crystalline nature of the AgNPs are analyzed with the help of XRD and TEM techniques respectively. DLS and Zeta potential techniques are carried out to find the size and stability of AgNPs respectively and UV is used to verify the presence of AgNPs in synthesized samples employing SPR peaks around 435 nm. The antioxidant studies expose eminent scavenging activity which ranges from 13.71% to maximum 67.88%. Green synthesized AgNPs possess well organized biological activities concerning antioxidant and antibacterial, which can be used in some biologically applications.

Hydrothermal synthesis of copper (׀׀) oxide-nanoparticles with highly enhanced BTEX gas sensing performance using chemiresistive sensor

In the present work, the cost effective and facile hydrothermal synthesis technique was adopted to synthesize the copper (׀׀) oxide (CuO)-Nanoparticles (NPs). Physico-chemical characterization of the synthesized CuO-NPs was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were carried out to study the structural, optical, and surface morphology of nanomaterial. XRD analysis revealed that the synthesized CuO-NPs had monoclinic structure and the average crystallite size is 20 nm. FTIR spectra indicate the vibrational bands of metal oxygen bonds (Cu-O). UV-visible absorption spectra were utilized to determine the energy band gap (E_g) of the CuO-NPs. In addition, we fabricated the chemiresistive sensor using synthesized CuO-NPs for detecting Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These results demonstrate that CuO-NPs based chemiresistive sensor is ideal for qualitative detection of BTEX chemicals vapors (i.e. Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene).

Tuning the reactivity of tri-s-triazine, trinitro-tri-s-triazine and ternary tri-s-triazine graphitic C3N4 quantum dots through H-functionalized and B-doped complexes: A density functional study

Modifying the structures and doping are proven to be effective methods to tune the structural and electrical properties of g-C₃N₄ quantum dots. Hence, in this study, tri-s-triazine and tri-nitro tri-s-triazine have been studied by functionalizing their edges with hydrogen. The H-functionalized tri-nitro tri-s-triazine quantum dot displays a buckled structure with a band gap of 1.988 eV, whereas the tri-s-triazine demonstrates a planner structure with a band gap of 1.636 eV. The obtained results have been compared with the previous results. The absorbance spectrum of H-functionalized trinitro tri-s-triazine falls under the visible region with a peak value of 488 nm, and the absorption spectrum of tri-s-triazine falls at 790 nm. The planarity of the tri-nitro tri-s-triazine structure is improved by doping the B atom in the N site, and the band gap of H-functionalized B doped tri-nitro tri-s-triazine is 1.143 eV. The absorbance spectrum of H-functionalized B doped tri-nitro tri-s-triazine is 508 nm. The reactivity of the structure is increased by doping B atoms, and it is confirmed by the electrophilicity index. Similarly, the H-functionalized B doped tri-s-triazine exhibits a band gap of 1.328 eV. Further, the tri-s-triazine structures are arranged in ternary form, and the properties are studied by increasing the number of B atoms in the tri-s-triazine rings. The outcome presents that the structures are planar, and band gap values are reduced further. Also, the reactivity of the sheets is increased, which is confirmed by the electrophilicity index. It is proposed that the sheets with a high reactivity can be used for the removal of hazardous ions and molecules from the industrial wastage.

Oxidizing agent impacting on growth of ZnO tetrapod nanostructures and its characterization

In this paper, the fabrication of ZnO tetrapod was investigated. It was synthesized by the thermal oxidation technique using metal zinc powder mixed with oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and ammonium persulfate ((NH₄)₂S₂O₈). The furnace heating temperature reached at 1000 °C in the air. The average diameter and length of a tetrapod leg for mixture with H₂O₂ from SEM were 45.3 nm and 1.57 μm, respectively. The oxygen vacancy (36%) of ZnO tetrapod with H₂O₂ was higher than 33% of ZnO tetrapod with only Zn. Growth mechanism of ZnO tetrapod was processed via the formation of Zn nucleus and growing the wurtzite structure. The growing directions of ZnO crystal conformed with the [0001] direction. ZnO tetrapod showed up the high resolution TEM image with the lattice spacing 0.252 nm. From these results, this work was indicated that H₂O₂ solution was a better oxidizing reaction helper to make ZnO tetrapod nanostructures than anything else.

Solvent-mediated synthesis of BiOI with a tunable surface structure for effective visible light active photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater

The present study investigated the effect of various solvents on the tunable surface morphology and photocatalytic activity (PCA) of bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI), which could be used for the reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation (VLI). BiOI samples exhibiting different morphologies, i.e., two-dimensional square-like nanosheet and three-dimensional hierarchical flower-like morphology, were synthesized by a hydro/solvothermal process using different solvents, namely H₂O, MeOH, EtOH, and ethylene glycol (EG). The crystal structure, surface morphology, surface area, light-absorption capability, and recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers were examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and transient photocurrent analyses, respectively. The BiOI sample fabricated in EG showed excellent photocatalytic efficiency (~99%) for the reduction of Cr(VI) after 90 min under VLI. The enhanced PCA demonstrated that the high surface area and well-structured surface characteristics of flower-like 3D BiOI microspheres played important roles in the photoreduction process. Moreover, a plausible mechanism for the reduction of Cr(VI) over the EG-BiOI photocatalyst was proposed. The results of the PCA evaluation and recycle test revealed that 3D EG-BiOI microspheres could serve as promising materials for the efficient removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Additionally, EG-BiOI could be utilized in other environmental remediation processes.

In vitro fibrinolytic activity of an enzyme purified from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain KJ10 isolated from soybean paste

A fibrinolytic protease secreting producing Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain KJ10 was initially screened from the fermented soybean. Maximum productivity was obtained in the culture medium after 40 h incubation, 34 °C incubation temperature at pH 8.0. Fibrinolytic protease production was enhanced in the culture medium with 1% sucrose (3712 ± 52 U/mL), 1% (w/v) yeast extract (3940 ± 28 U/mL) and 0.1% MgSO₄ (3687 ± 38 U/mL). Enzyme was purified up to 22.9-fold with 26%recovery after Q-Sepharose HP column chromatography. After three steps purification, enzyme activity was 1606U/mg and SDS-PAGE analysis revealed 29 kDa protein and enzyme band was detected by zymograpy. Enzyme was highly active at pH 8.0, at wide temperature ranges (40 °C − 55 °C) and was activated by Mn²⁺ (102 ± 3.1%) and Mg²⁺ (101.4 ± 2.9%) ions. The purified fibrinolytic enzyme was highly specific against N-Suc-Ala-Ala-Pro-Phe-pNA (189 mmol/min/mL) and clot lytic activity reached 28 ± 1.8% within 60 minin vitro. The purified fibrinolytic enzyme showed least erythrocytic lysis activity confirmed safety to prevent various health risks, including hemolytic anemia. Based on this study, administration of fibrinolytic enzyme from B. amyloliquefaciens strain KJ10 is safe for clinical applications.

A facile and green synthesis of CuO/NiO nanoparticles and their removal activity of toxic nitro compounds in aqueous medium

In this present work, we report the green synthesis of mixed bimetal oxides (CuO/NiO) for the efficient reduction of toxic nitrophenols (NP, DNP and TNP) in aqueous medium. The CuO/NiO NPs were synthesized by green hydrothermal method combined calcination process. The physiochemical properties of the synthesized CuO/NiO NPs were systematically characterized by using XRD, XPS, FTIR, SEM, and HR-TEM techniques. The calcinated CuO/NiO NPs XRD pattern and SEM morphology show the high crystalline nature than the non-calcinated. Whereas, the XPS and FTIR results confirmed the formation of the metal oxide bonding and the interaction of the bimetals. The HR-TEM images showed the spherical crystals with average particle size about 25 nm. In addition, the SAED pattern confirmed the polycrystalline nature of CuO/NiO NPs. The catalytic reduction of nitro compounds to amino derivative was studied with reducing agent (NaBH₄). The CuO/NiO NPs showed the high catalytic activity and completed the reduction reaction of NP, DNP and TNP with in 2, 5 and 10 min respectively. In addition, CuO/NiO NPS exhibited the excellent kinetic rate constant k value about 1.519, 0.5102, 0.4601 min^-1 for NP, DNP and TNP respectively. Furthermore, the conversion product aminophenol was observed for these three nitro compounds. The proposed CuO/NiO NPs showed excellent crystal stability after the nitrophenol reduction reactions. An inexpensive CuO/NiO NPs is a promising catalysts for reduction of toxic nitro compounds to useful products in aqueous or non-aqueous medium.

A sensitive and fast approach for voltammetric analysis of bisphenol a as a toxic compound in food products using a Pt-SWCNTs/ionic liquid modified sensor

A sensitive and fast approach has been introduced for the voltammetric sensing of bisphenol A based on modification of a paste electrode with Pt-SWCNTs and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium n-butylsulfate as a highly conductive binder. The new sensor was used to determine the concentration of bisphenol A in food products in I-V mode. The Pt-SWCNTs nanocomposite was synthesized through the polyol method and its morphology was evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The determining factors influencing the sensing performance, i.e., pH and mediators used in the modification process were optimized in the first step and the results showed that at a pH of 7.0, a modified paste containing 9% (w:w) nanocomposite and 20% (v:v) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium n-butylsulfate formed catalytic properties enhancing the oxidation signal of bisphenol A by 5.9 folds. Current density investigation clearly confirmed the conductivity of Pt-SWCNTs and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium n-butylsulfate in the paste matrix. In addition, fabricated sensor showed considerable sensing behavior for bisphenol A in the concentration range of 0.5 nM-180 μM with a detection limit of 0.2 nM. In the final step, using standard addition technique, the ability of fabricated sensor for sensing bisphenol A in food products was evaluated, and the results confirmed improved performance of the modified electrodes.

Synthesis of hierarchically structured T-ZnO-rGO-PEI composite and their catalytic removal of colour and colourless phenolic compounds

Phenolic compounds bisphenol A (BPA) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) are the prime water contaminants. As reported, these compounds are some of the highly hazardous ones to the human and living species. In this study, T-ZnO-rGO-PEI composite was synthesized employing hydrothermal method and the obtained composite samples were systematically characterized by FTIR, XPS, FE-SEM and HR-TEM studies. The FTIR, XPS analysis confirmed the successful surface modification of T-ZnO-rGO-PEI composite. The FE-SEM morphology confirmed the formation of ZnO (arm length about 2.5 μm) tetrapod structured in synthesized T-ZnO-rGO-PEI composite. The thickness of formed ZnO arm (0.44 μm) was increased after the polymer coating which confirmed the successful surface modification by PEI polymer. The HR-TEM images confirm the uniform coating of PEI polymer on T-ZnO-rGO surface. The catalytic activity and adsorption capacity of the synthesized T-ZnO-rGO-PEI composite was successfully explored using 4-nitrophenol and bisphenol-A as model pollutants .T-ZnO-rGO-PEI composite and found that 4-NP reduction reaction was completed within 10 min with the rate of 0.224 min^-1. The BPA adsorption over T-ZnO-rGO-PEI exhibited high adsorption rate of 0.0210 min^-1. In addition, the detailed 4-NP reduction and BPA adsorption mechanism was demonstrated. Hence the synthesized T-ZnO-rGO-PEI composite is a promising catalyst for the removal of micropollutants in aqueous medium.
