Removal of food dyes using biological materials via adsorption: A review

It is alarming that synthetic food dyes (FD) are widely used in various industries and that these facilities discharge their wastewater into the environment without treating it. FDs mixed into industrial wastewater pose a threat to the environment and human health. Therefore, removing FDs from wastewater is very important. This review explores the burgeoning field of FD removal from wastewater through adsorption using biological materials (BMs). By synthesizing a wealth of research findings, this comprehensive review elucidates the diverse array of BMs employed, ranging from algae and fungi to agricultural residues and microbial biomass. Furthermore, this review investigates challenges in practical applications, such as process optimization and scalability, offering insights into bridging the gap between laboratory successes and real-world implementations. Harnessing the remarkable adsorptive potential of BMs, this review presents a roadmap toward transformative solutions for FD removal, promising cleaner and safer production practices in the food and beverage industry.

Functionalized fennel extract-mediated alumina/cerium oxide nanocomposite potentiometric sensor for the determination of diclofenac sodium medication

The current work suggests a new, ultrasensitive green functionalized sensor for the determination of anti-inflammatory medication diclofenac sodium (DCF). Alumina (Al2O3) and cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted great interest for their use as outstanding and electroactive nanocomposite in potentiometric and sensory research due to their ultrafunctional potential. The formed nanoparticles have been confirmed using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The fennel extract-mediated Al2O3/CeO2 nanocomposite (Al2O3/CeO2 NCS) modified coated wire membrane sensor developed in this study was used to quantify DCF in bulk and commercial products. Diclofenac sodium was coupled with phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) to generate diclofenac phosphomolybdate (DCF-PM) as an active ion-pair in the existence of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE). Clear peaks at 270, and 303 nm with band gaps of 4.59 eV and 4.09 eV were measured using UV-vis spectroscopy of Al2O3 and CeO2, respectively. The crystallite sizes of the formed nanoparticles were XRD-determined to be 30.13 ± 8, 17.72 ± 3, and 35.8 ± 0.5 nm for Al2O3, CeO2, and Al2O3/CeO2 NCS, respectively. The developed sensor showed excellent response for the measurement and assay of DCF, with a linearity between 1.0 × 10-9 and 1.0 × 10-2 mol L-1. EmV = (57.76) log [DCF] +622.69 was derived. On the other hand, the typical type DCF-PM presented a potentiometric response range of 1.0 × 10-5-1.0 × 10-2 mol L-1 and a regression equation of EmV = (56.97) log [DCF]+367.16. The functionalized sensor that was proposed was successful in determining DCF in its commercial tablets with percent recovery 99.95 ± 0.3. Method validation has been used to improve the suitability of the suggested potentiometric technique, by studying various parameters with respect to the international council harmonization requirements for analytical methodologies.

Laser-induced 2D/0D graphene-nanoceria freestanding paper-based films for on-site hydrogen peroxide monitoring in no-touch disinfection treatments

A one-shot CO2 laser-based strategy to generate conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) decorated with nanoceria (nCe) is proposed. The 2D/0D rGO-nCe films, integrated as catalytic sensing layers in paper-based sensors, were employed for on-site monitoring of indoor fogging treatments against Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), a ubiquitous pathogenic bacterium. The rGO-nCe laser-assisted synthesis was optimized to preserve the rGO film morphological and electron-transfer features and simultaneously integrate catalytic nCe. The films were characterized by microscopical (SEM), spectroscopical (EDX, Raman, and FTIR), and electrochemical techniques. The most performing film was integrated into a nitrocellulose substrate, and the complete sensor was assembled via a combination of xurography and stencil printing. The rGO-nCe sensor's catalytic activity was proved toward the detection of H2O2, obtaining sensitive determination (LOD = 0.3 µM) and an extended linear range (0.5-1500 µM). Eventually, the rGO-nCe sensor was challenged for the real-time continuous monitoring of hydrogen peroxide aerosol during no-touch fogging treatment conducted following the EU's recommendation for biocidal product use. Treatment effectiveness was proved toward three Lm strains characterized by different origins, i.e., type strain ATCC 7644, clinical strain 338, and food strain 641/6II. The sensor allows for discrimination and quantification treatments at different environmental biocidal amounts and fogging times, and correlates with the microbiological inhibition, promoting the proposed sensor as a useful tool to modulate and monitor no-touch treatments.

The addition of mammalian cell culture medium impacts nanoparticle toxicity in zebrafish

Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are ubiquitous in contemporary applications, yet their environmental and human health impacts remain inadequately understood. This study addresses the challenge of identifying potential risks associated with ENM exposure by highlighting the significant variability in existing research methodologies. Without a systematic collection of toxicological data that encompasses standardized materials, relevant platforms, and assays, the task of identifying potential risks linked to ENM exposure becomes an intricate challenge. In vitro assessments often use media rich in ionic species, such as RPMI and fetal bovine serum (FBS). Zebrafish embryos, known to develop normally in low-ionic environments, were exposed to Cerium Oxide, Zinc Oxide, and Graphene Oxides in different media at varying concentrations. Here, we discovered that zebrafish embryos tolerated a mix of 80 % RPMI, 2 % FBS, and 1 % antibiotic cocktail. The results revealed that adverse effects observed in zebrafish with certain nanomaterials in Ultra-Pure (UP) water were mitigated in cell culture medium, emphasizing the importance of revisiting previously considered non-toxic materials in vitro. The zebrafish results underscore the importance of utilizing a multidimensional in vivo platform to gauge the biological activity of nanomaterials accurately.

Recent advances in reactive oxygen species scavenging nanomaterials for wound healing

Reactive oxygen species play a crucial role in cell signaling pathways during wound healing phases. Treatment strategies to balance the redox level in the deep wound tissue are emerging for wound management. In recent years, reactive oxygen species scavenging agents including natural antioxidants, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging nanozymes, and antioxidant delivery systems have been widely employed to inhibit oxidative stress and promote skin regeneration. Here, the importance of reactive oxygen species in different wound healing phases is critically analyzed. Various cutting-edge bioactive ROS nanoscavengers and antioxidant delivery platforms are discussed. This review also highlights the future directions for wound therapies via reactive oxygen species scavenging. This comprehensive review offers a map of the research on ROS scavengers with redox balancing mechanisms of action in the wound healing process, which benefits development and clinical applications of next-generation ROS scavenging-based nanomaterials in skin regeneration.

Cerium oxide nanoparticles in wound care: a review of mechanisms and therapeutic applications

Skin wound healing is a complex and tightly regulated process. The frequent occurrence and reoccurrence of acute and chronic wounds cause significant skin damage to patients and impose socioeconomic burdens. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement to promote interdisciplinary development in the fields of material science and medicine to investigate novel mechanisms for wound healing. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are a type of nanomaterials that possess distinct properties and have broad application prospects. They are recognized for their capabilities in enhancing wound closure, minimizing scarring, mitigating inflammation, and exerting antibacterial effects, which has led to their prominence in wound care research. In this paper, the distinctive physicochemical properties of CeO2 NPs and their most recent synthesis approaches are discussed. It further investigates the therapeutic mechanisms of CeO2 NPs in the process of wound healing. Following that, this review critically examines previous studies focusing on the effects of CeO2 NPs on wound healing. Finally, it suggests the potential application of cerium oxide as an innovative nanomaterial in diverse fields and discusses its prospects for future advancements.

Ceria nanoparticles: biomedical applications and toxicity

Ceria nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) have become popular materials in biomedical and industrial fields due to their potential applications in anti-oxidation, cancer therapy, photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, sensors, etc. Many methods, including gas phase, solid phase, liquid phase, and the newly proposed green synthesis method, have been reported for the synthesis of CeO2 NPs. Due to the wide application of CeO2 NPs, concerns about their adverse impacts on human health have been raised. This review covers recent studies on the biomedical applications of CeO2 NPs, including their use in the treatment of various diseases (e.‍g., Alzheimer's disease, ischemic stroke, retinal damage, chronic inflammation, and cancer). CeO2 NP toxicity is discussed in terms of the different systems of the human body (e.‍g., cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, respiratory toxicity, neurotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity). This comprehensive review covers both fundamental discoveries and exploratory progress in CeO2 NP research that may lead to practical developments in the future.

Sol-gel synthesis and cytotoxicity evaluation of selenium-doped cerium oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Over the past few years, ovarian cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among women. Despite the widespread knowledge of its prevalence, the curative measures and survival rates for ovarian cancer have not improved significantly, making it a challenging condition. Nanotechnology has become increasingly prominent in the field of cancer treatment. Previous studies showed both cerium oxide nanoparticles (CONPs) and selenium (Se) had anti-cancer. Therefore, doping selenium into CONPs may exhibit a more significant anti-cancer effect on ovarian cancer cells. Cerium nitrate hexahydrate, sodium selenite, and gelatin were employed for the production of CONPs and Se-doped CONPs. The EDX, XRD, and TEM/PSA imaging were employed to investigate the structural characteristics and morphology of the synthesized Se-doped CONPs. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and TNF, IL-6, and IL-1B gene expression were evaluated after inoculating A2780 human epithelial ovarian carcinoma (HEOC) with Se-doped CONP. Statistical analysis was conducted using ANOVA, followed by Bonferroni's t-test for multiple group comparisons. Se-doped CONPs had IC50 of 113 and 49 PPM after 24 and 48 h, respectively. In addition, Se-doped CONPs with concentrations of 50 and 100 PPM significantly reduced to ROS levels in the HEOC cell line. Also, 50 and 100 PPM Se-doped CONPs lead to significantly reduced TNF, IL-6, and IL-1B gene expression compared to the control group in the HEOC cell line. Our study showed the potential anti-cancer effects of Se-doped CONPs on ovarian cancer cell lines.

The Effect of Cerium Oxide (CeO2) on Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Skeletal Muscle in Mice with Streptozocin-Induced Diabetes

Objective: Lower extremity ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) may occur with trauma-related vascular injury and various vascular diseases, during the use of a tourniquet, in temporary clamping of the aorta in aortic surgery, or following acute or bilateral acute femoral artery occlusion. Mitochondrial dysfunction and increased basal oxidative stress in diabetes may cause an increase in the effects of increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial dysfunction due to IRI. It is of great importance to examine therapeutic approaches that can minimize the effects of IRI, especially for patient groups under chronic oxidative stress such as DM. Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles mimic antioxidant enzymes and act as a catalyst that scavenges ROS. In this study, it was aimed to investigate whether CeO2 has protective effects on skeletal muscles in lower extremity IRI in mice with streptozocin-induced diabetes. Methods: A total of 38 Swiss albino mice were divided into six groups as follows: control group (group C, n = 6), diabetes group (group D, n = 8), diabetes-CeO2 (group DCO, n = 8), diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion (group DIR, n = 8), and diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion-CeO2 (group DIRCO, n = 8). The DCO and DIRCO groups were given doses of CeO2 of 0.5 mg/kg intraperitoneally 30 min before the IR procedure. A 120 min ischemia-120 min reperfusion period with 100% O2 was performed. At the end of the reperfusion period, muscle tissues were removed for histopathological and biochemical examinations. Results: Total antioxidant status (TAS) levels were found to be significantly lower in group DIR compared with group D (p = 0.047 and p = 0.022, respectively). In group DIRCO, total oxidant status (TOS) levels were found to be significantly higher than in group DIR (p < 0.001). The oxidative stress index (OSI) was found to be significantly lower in group DIR compared with group DCO (p < 0.001). Paraoxanase (PON) enzyme activity was found to be significantly increased in group DIR compared with group DCO (p < 0.001). The disorganization and degeneration score for muscle cells, inflammatory cell infiltration score, and total injury score in group DIRCO were found to be significantly lower than in group DIR (p = 0.002, p = 0.034, and p = 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Our results confirm that CeO2, with its antioxidative properties, reduces skeletal muscle damage in lower extremity IRI in diabetic mice.

Preparation of monodisperse cerium oxide particle suspensions from a tetravalent precursor

Cerium oxide particles are a unique material that enables studying the intersection of metal oxides, f-elements, and nanomaterials. Distinct from diverse applications in catalysis, energy, and medicine, cerium possesses additional influence as a non-radioactive actinide surrogate. Herein, we present a synthesis for sub-micron cerium particles using hexamethylenetetramine and ammonium hydroxide as precipitating agents with a CeIV precursor. The combinatorial homogeneous precipitation approach yields monodisperse and moderately-stable CeO2 particle suspensions in ethanol, as determined by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential measurements. Various additives may be used to moderate and manipulate the surface charge of the particles. Proof-of-concept electrophoretic deposition of the particles produces a uniform layer of CeO2 on graphite. The synthesis and suspension properties are developed as a methodology towards future controlled actinide hydrolysis and film deposition.

Green synthesized Cu-doped CeO2nanoparticles for Congo red dye adsorption and antibacterial action

The removal of pollutants from water bodies is crucial for the well-being of humanity and is a topic of global research. Researchers have turned their attention to green synthesized nanoparticles for wastewater treatment due to their eco-friendly nature, biocompatibility, and cost-effectiveness. This work demonstrates the efficient removal of organic dye and both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria from water bodies using copper-doped cerium oxide nanoparticles synthesized withMurraya Koenigiiextract. Characterized via various methods, the 15% copper doped cerium oxide nanoparticles (Cu 15% NPs) exhibited maximum Congo red dye adsorption (98% degradation in 35 min). Kinetic analysis favoured a pseudo-second-order model, indicating the chemical nature of adsorption. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms aligned with the Langmuir model, indicating homogenous monolayer dye adsorption on the doped adsorbent. The maximum uptake of adsorbate,Qmobtained from Langmuir model for Cu 15% NPs was 193 mg g-1. The study also showed enhanced antibacterial activity againstBacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coliandPseudomonas aeruginosafor Cu-doped ceria, attributed to generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by the redox cycling between Ce3+and Ce4+. This substantiated that the green synthesized copper doped cerium oxide nanoparticles are potential candidates for adsorptive removal of Congo red dye and as antibacterial agents.

Fabrication and Characterization of Montmorillonite Clay/Agar-Based Magnetic Composite and Its Biological and Electrical Conductivity Evaluation

Montmorillonite clay and agar are naturally occurring materials of significant importance in designing biocompatible materials tailored for applications in biotechnology and medicine. The introduction of magnetic properties has the potential to significantly boost their characteristics and expand their applications. In this study, we have successfully synthesized highly intercalated magnetic composites, incorporating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MNPs), montmorillonite clay (MMT), and agar (AG), through a thermo-physicomechanical method. Three samples of MMT-AG with 2, 1.5, and 0.5% MNPs and three sample composites of MNPs-AG with 2, 1, and 0.5% MMT clay are prepared. The synthesized composites were characterized by SEM, XRD, TGA, DTA, and FTIR. SEM analysis revealed a uniform dispersion of MNPs and MMT in the composite. The XRD pattern confirmed the presence of MNPs in the composite site. The TGA and DTA results demonstrated improved thermal stability due to the MNP incorporation. FTIR spectra showed all of the constituents of agar, MNPs, and MMT clay. The swelling ratio was observed to range from 835% to 1739%. The swelling study indicated an increased hydrophobicity with the addition of MNPs to the composite. Antibacterial activities revealed a significant inhibition of Escherichia coli (E. coli) growth by ranging from 10 to 19 nm in the composite. The composite also exhibited a considerable antioxidant action, with IC50 values of 7.96, 46.55, and 57.58 μg/mL, and electrical properties just like conductors.

Ceria-Based Therapeutic Antioxidants for Biomedical Applications

The growing interest in nanomedicine over the last 20 years has carved out a research field called "nanocatalytic therapy," where catalytic reactions mediated by nanomaterials are employed to intervene in disease-critical biomolecular processes. Among many kinds of catalytic/enzyme-mimetic nanomaterials investigated thus far, ceria nanoparticles stand out from others owing to their unique scavenging properties against biologically noxious free radicals, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), by exerting enzyme mimicry and nonenzymatic activities. Much effort has been made to utilize ceria nanoparticles as self-regenerating antioxidative and anti-inflammatory agents for various kinds of diseases, given the detrimental effects of ROS and RNS therein that need alleviation. In this context, this review is intended to provide an overview as to what makes ceria nanoparticles merit attention in disease therapy. The introductory part describes the characteristics of ceria nanoparticles as an oxygen-deficient metal oxide. The pathophysiological roles of ROS and RNS are then presented, as well as their scavenging mechanisms by ceria nanoparticles. Representative examples of recent ceria-nanoparticle-based therapeutics are summarized by categorization into organ and disease types, followed by the discussion on the remaining challenges and future research directions.

Metal-Based Nanoparticles for Cardiovascular Diseases

Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death and disability. While there are many therapeutic alternatives available for the management of CVDs, the majority of classic therapeutic strategies were found to be ineffective at stopping or significantly/additionally slowing the progression of these diseases, or they had unfavorable side effects. Numerous metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) have been created to overcome these limitations, demonstrating encouraging possibilities in the treatment of CVDs due to advancements in nanotechnology. Metallic nanomaterials, including gold, silver, and iron, come in various shapes, sizes, and geometries. Metallic NPs are generally smaller and have more specialized physical, chemical, and biological properties. Metal-based NPs may come in various forms, such as nanoshells, nanorods, and nanospheres, and they have been studied the most. Massive potential applications for these metal nanomaterial structures include supporting molecular imaging, serving as drug delivery systems, enhancing radiation-based anticancer therapy, supplying photothermal transforming effects for thermal therapy, and being compounds with bactericidal, fungicidal, and antiviral qualities that may be helpful for cardiovascular diseases. In this context, the present paper aims to review the applications of relevant metal and metal oxide nanoparticles in CVDs, creating an up-to-date framework that aids researchers in developing more efficient treatment strategies.

α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Activity and Cytotoxicity of CeO2 Nanoparticles Fabricated Using a Mixture of Different Cerium Precursors

A mixture of three distinct cerium precursors (Ce(NO3)3·6H2O, CeCl3·7H2O, and Ce(CH3COO)3·H2O) was used to prepare cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) in a polyol-mediated synthesis. Different ratios of diethylene glycol (DEG) and H2O were utilized in the synthesis. The properties of the synthesized CeO2 NPs, such as structural and morphological properties, were investigated to observe the effect of the mixed cerium precursors. Crystallite sizes of 7-8 nm were obtained for all samples, and all synthesized samples were confirmed to be in the cubic phase. The average particle sizes of the spherical CeO2 were between 9 and 13 nm. The successful synthesis of CeO2 can also be confirmed via the vibrational band of Ce-O from the FTIR. Antidiabetic properties of the synthesized CeO2 NPs were investigated using α-glucosidase enzyme inhibition assay, and the concentration of the synthesized CeO2 NPs was varied in the study. The biocompatibility properties of the synthesized CeO2 NPs were investigated via cytotoxicity tests, and it was found that all synthesized materials showed no cytotoxic properties at lower concentrations (62.5-125 μg/mL).

Radioprotective Potency of Nanoceria

Cancer presents a significant medical challenge that requires effective management. Current cancer treatment options, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy, have limitations in terms of their efficacy and the potential harm they can cause to normal tissues. In response, researchers have been focusing on developing adjuvants that can enhance tumor responses while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. Among the promising options, nanoceria (NC), a type of nanoparticle composed of cerium oxide, has garnered attention for its potential to improve various cancer treatment regimens. Nanoceria has demonstrated its ability to exhibit toxicity towards cancer cells, inhibit invasion, and sensitize cancer cells to both radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The remarkable aspect is that nanoceria show minimal toxicity to normal tissues while protecting against various forms of reactive oxygen species generation. Its capability to enhance the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy and radiotherapy has also been observed. This paper thoroughly reviews the current literature on nanoceria's applications within different cancer treatment modalities, with a specific focus on radiotherapy. The emphasis is on nanoceria's unique role in enhancing tumor radiosensitization and safeguarding normal tissues from radiation damage.

Implications of siRNA Therapy in Bone Health: Silencing Communicates

The global statistics of bone disorders, skeletal defects, and fractures are frightening. Several therapeutic strategies are being used to fix them; however, RNAi-based siRNA therapy is starting to prove to be a promising approach for the prevention of bone disorders because of its advanced capabilities to deliver siRNA or siRNA drug conjugate to the target tissue. Despite its 'bench-to-bedside' usefulness and approval by food and drug administration for five siRNA-based therapeutic medicines: Patisiran, Vutrisiran, Inclisiran, Lumasiran, and Givosiran, its use for the other diseases still remains to be resolved. By correcting the complications and complexities involved in siRNA delivery for its sustained release, better absorption, and toxicity-free activity, siRNA therapy can be harnessed as an experimental tool for the prevention of complex and undruggable diseases with a personalized medicine approach. The present review summarizes the findings of notable research to address the implications of siRNA in bone health for the restoration of bone mass, recovery of bone loss, and recuperation of bone fractures.

Remineralization of Dentin with Cerium Oxide and Its Potential Use for Root Canal Disinfection

Objective

This study was to investigate a novel antibacterial biomimetic mineralization strategy for exploring its potential application for root canal disinfection when stabilized cerium oxide was used.

Material and Methods

A biomimetic mineralization solution (BMS) consisting of cerium nitrate and dextran was prepared. Single-layer collagen fibrils, collagen membranes, demineralized dentin, and root canal system were treated with the BMS for mineralization. The mineralized samples underwent comprehensive characterization using various techniques, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and micro-CT. Additionally, the antimicrobial properties of the BMS and the remineralized dentin were also analyzed with broth microdilution method, live/dead staining, and SEM.

Results

Cerium ions in the BMS underwent a transformation into cerium oxide nanoparticles, which were deposited in the inter- and intra-fibrillar collagen spaces through a meticulous bottom-up process. XPS analysis disclosed the presence of both Ce (III) and Ce (IV) of the generated cerium oxides. A comprehensive examination utilizing SEM and micro-CT identified the presence of cerium oxide nanoparticles deposited within the dentinal tubules and lateral canals of the root canal system. The BMS and remineralized dentin exhibited substantial antibacterial efficacy against E. faecalis, as substantiated by assessments involving the broth dilution method and live/dead staining technique. The SEM findings revealed the cell morphological changes of deceased E. faecalis.

Conclusion

This study successfully demonstrated antibacterial biomimetic mineralization as well as sealing dentinal tubules and lateral branches of root canals using cerium nitrate and dextran. This novel biomimetic mineralization could be used as an alternative strategy for root canal disinfection.

Recent advances in the production of bionanomaterials for development of sustainable food packaging: A comprehensive review

Polymers originating from natural macromolecule based polymeric materials have gained popularity due to the demand for green resources to develop unique, eco-friendly, and high-quality biopolymers. The objective of this review is to address the utilization of bionanomaterials to improve food quality, safety, security, and shelf life. Bionanomaterials are synthesized by integrating biological molecules with synthetic materials at the nanoscale. Nanostructured materials derived from biopolymers such as cellulose, chitin, or collagen can be employed for the development of sustainable food packaging. Green materials are cost-effective, biocompatible, biodegradable, and renewable. The interaction of nanoparticles with biological macromolecules must be analyzed to determine the properties of the packaging film. The nanoparticles control the growth of bacteria that cause food spoiling by releasing distinctive chemicals. Bio-nanocomposites and nanoencapsulation systems have been used in antimicrobial bio-based packaging solutions to improve the efficiency of synergism. Nanomaterials can regulate gas and moisture permeability, screen UV radiation, and limit microbial contamination, keeping the freshness and flavor of the food. Food packaging based on nanoparticles embedded biopolymers can alleviate environmental concerns by lowering the amount of packaging materials required and enhancing packaging recyclability. This results in less waste and a more eco-sustainable approach to food packaging. The study on current advances in the production of bionanomaterials for development of sustainable food packaging involves a detailed investigation of the available data from existing literature, as well as the compilation and analysis of relevant research results using statistical approaches.

Combinatorial Effect of Doxorubicin Entrapped in Alginate-Chitosan Hybrid Polymer and Cerium Oxide Nanocomposites on Skin Cancer Management in Mice

Conventional chemotherapeutic drugs are used for cancer management, but recently nanoparticles have also been shown to contribute towards controlling cancer cell proliferation. In the present study, we focussed on analyzing the combinatorial effect of Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles and Doxorubicin (Dox) on melanoma cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. We entrapped CeO2, Dox, and CeO2+Dox in a hybrid polymer matrix of alginate and chitosan (Alg-Cs) and used them in both in vitro and in vivo studies to compare their anticancer effect. Scratch assay using A549 lung cancer cells showed delayed wound healing when exposed to a low and high dose of CeO2 +Dox, compared to individual components. In order to determine a safe dose of the nanoformulations, zebrafish embryos were used. Further, in vivo, testing was done on Swiss albino female mice where the melanoma was induced by applying Benzopyrene followed by UV irradiation. The animals were treated with CeO2, Dox, and CeO2+ Dox that were entrapped in Alg-Cs for further 21 days. From both in vivo and in vitro results, we concluded that CeO2 and Dox in combination had superior therapeutic efficiency in cancer cells and animals than the nude drugs.

Doped Ceria Nanomaterials: Preparation, Properties, and Uses

Doping is a powerful strategy for enhancing the performance of ceria (CeO2) nanomaterials in a range of catalytic, photocatalytic, biomedical, and energy applications. The present review summarizes recent developments in the doping of ceria nanomaterials with metal and non-metal dopants for selected applications. The most important metal dopants are grouped into s, p, d, and f block elements, and the relevant synthetic methods, novel properties, and key applications of metal doped ceria are collated and critically discussed. Non-metal dopants are similarly examined and compared with metal dopants using the same performance criteria. The review reveals that non-metal (N, S, P, F, and Cl) doped ceria has mainly been synthesized by calcination and hydrothermal methods, and it has found applications mostly in photocatalysis or as a cathode material for LiS batteries. In contrast, metal doped ceria nanomaterials have been prepared by a wider range of synthetic routes and evaluated for a larger number of applications, including as catalysts or photocatalysts, as antibacterial agents, and in devices such as fuel cells, gas sensors, and colorimetric detectors. Dual/co-doped ceria containing both metals and non-metals are also reviewed, and it is found that co-doping often leads to improved properties compared with single-element doping. The review concludes with a future outlook that identifies unaddressed issues in the synthesis and applications of doped ceria nanomaterials.

Ce1-xZrxO2 nanoparticles in bacterial cellulose, bio-based composites with self-regenerating antioxidant capabilities

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an emerging biopolymer with ever-widening uses in the biomedical field due to its purity, mechanical stability, conformability, moisture control, and biocompatibility. In the wet form, its highly porous nanofibrillar structure and abundant surface hydroxyl groups enable the functionalisation of BC with inorganic nanoparticles (NPs), granting the material additional purposive capabilities. As oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) negatively affects various cellular structures, the functionalisation of BC with CeO2 NPs, known antioxidants, is pursued in this work to achieve composites capable of minimising inflammation and tissue damage. We report on low-temperature in situ syntheses of CeO2 NPs in BC enabling the formation of BC-CeO2 composites that exhibit self-regenerating antioxidant properties, as verified by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays and studies of the evolution in the CeO2 absorption edge (indicative of the Ce3+ and Ce4+ fractions). X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further reveals that incorporation of zirconium into the CeO2 lattice leads to a four-fold increase in the Ce3+: Ce4+ ratio, thereby enhancing the composite antioxidant performance as exemplified by BC-Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 recording the highest %DPPH scavenging per unit mass of NPs among the BC-Ce1-xZrxO2 studied systems.

Fungal biorecovery of cerium as oxalate and carbonate biominerals

Cerium is the most sought-after rare earth element (REE) for application in high-tech electronic devices and versatile nanomaterials. In this research, biomass-free spent culture media of Aspergillus niger and Neurospora crassa containing precipitant ligands (oxalate, carbonate) were investigated for their potential application in biorecovery of Ce from solution. Precipitation occurred after Ce3+ was mixed with biomass-free spent culture media and >99% Ce was recovered from media of both organisms. SEM showed that biogenic crystals with distinctive morphologies were formed in the biomass-free spent medium of A. niger. Irregularly-shaped nanoparticles with varying sizes ranging from 0.5 to 2 μm and amorphous biominerals were formed after mixing the carbonate-laden N. crassa supernatant, resulting from ureolysis of supplied urea, with Ce3+. Both biominerals contained Ce as the sole metal, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analyses identified the biominerals resulting from the biomass-free A. niger and N. crassa spent media as cerium oxalate decahydrate [Ce2(C2O4)3·10H2O] and cerium carbonate [Ce2(CO3)3·8H2O], respectively. Thermal decomposition experiments showed that the biogenic Ce oxalates and carbonates could be subsequently transformed into ceria (CeO2). FTIR confirmed that both amorphous and nanoscale Ce carbonates contained carbonate (CO32-) groups. FTIR-multivariate analysis could classify the biominerals into three groups according to different Ce concentrations and showed that Ce carbonate biominerals of higher purity were produced when precipitated at higher Ce3+ concentrations. This work provides new understanding of fungal biotransformations of soluble REE species and their biorecovery using biomass-free fungal culture systems and indicates the potential of using recovered REE as precursors for the biosynthesis of novel nanomaterials.

Cerium Oxide Polishes Lithium Disilicate Glass Ceramic via a Chemical-Mechanical Process

OBJECTIVE

 The aim of the present study was to evaluate the chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) effect of cerium oxide (ceria [CeO2]) as an abrasive to polish lithium disilicate glass ceramic.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 For the polishing experiment, 22 lithium disilicate glass ceramic samples were prepared, polished with sandpaper using a polishing machine, their surface roughness (Ra) was measured using a profilometer, and they were randomly divided into two groups (n = 10). The samples were polished for 30 seconds with ceria paste with different ratios of deionized water:ceria by weight: 1:0.5 (C0.5) and 1:1 (C1) according to their group and the Ra values were determined. The Ra measurement was repeated after an additional 30 seconds of polishing until 120 seconds of polishing had been performed. The surface images of the postpolishing (120 seconds) samples were obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the surface morphology. For the adsorption experiment, 10 lithium disilicate glass ceramic specimens were prepared and soaked in 50-mL deionized water. After 24 hours, the specimens were removed. Each liquid sample was divided in two halves. The first half was stored and ceria particles were added into the second half. After 24 hours, the solutions were filtered. The silicon concentration in the liquid samples was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 The difference in mean Ra value between groups was analyzed using two-way repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the difference in mean silica concentrations before and after adding ceria particles was analyzed using the paired t-test. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

 Ra decreased as the ratio of ceria and polishing time increased. The surface morphology of the samples analyzed by SEM corresponded with their Ra values. The mean silicon concentration after adding ceria particles was significantly decreased (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

 Using a ceria-polishing paste to polish lithium disilicate glass ceramic generates a significantly smoother surface compared with baseline roughness. Moreover, CeO2 has a mechanical action and chemical reaction with lithium disilicate glass ceramic. Therefore, it can be used as a CMP paste to create a smooth surface.

Phytomediated-Assisted Preparation of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Using Plant Extracts and Assessment of Their Structural and Optical Properties

Cerium oxide nanoparticles were obtained using aqueous extracts of Chelidonium majus and Viscum album. X-ray diffractometry analysis confirmed the crystalline structure of the synthesized cerium oxide nanoparticles calcined at 600 °C. Scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis reflectance and Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and fluorescence studies were utilized to interpret the morphological and optical properties of these nanoparticles. The STEM images revealed the spherical shape of the nanoparticles and that they were predominantly uniform in size. The optical band gap of our cerium nanoparticles was determined to be 3.3 and 3.0 eV from reflectance measurements using the Tauc plots. The nanoparticle sizes evaluated from the Raman band at 464 cm^-1 due to the F2g mode of the cubic fluorite structure of cerium oxide are close to those determined from the XRD and STEM data. The fluorescence results showed emission bands at 425, 446, 467, and 480 nm. The electronic absorption spectra have exhibited an absorption band around 325 nm. The antioxidant potential of the cerium oxide nanoparticles was estimated by DPPH scavenging assay.

Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles/Polyacrylonitrile Nanofibers as Impervious Barrier against Viral Infections

BACKGROUND

Using face masks is one of the protective measures to reduce the transmission rate of coronavirus. Its massive spread necessitates developing safe and effective antiviral masks (filters) applying nanotechnology.

METHODS

Novel electrospun composites were fabricated by incorporating cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofibers that can be used in the future in face masks. The effects of the polymer concentration, applied voltage, and feeding rate during the electrospinning were studied. The electrospun nanofibers were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, and tensile strength testing. The cytotoxic effect of the nanofibers was evaluated in the Vero cell line using the MTT colorimetric assay, and the antiviral activity of the proposed nanofibers was evaluated against the human adenovirus type 5 (ADV-5) respiratory virus.

RESULTS

The optimum formulation was fabricated with a PAN concentration of 8%, w/v loaded with 0.25%, w/v CeO2 NPs with a feeding rate of 26 KV and an applied voltage of 0.5 mL/h. They showed a particle size of 15.8 ± 1.91 nm and a zeta potential of -14 ± 0.141 mV. SEM imaging demonstrated the nanoscale features of the nanofibers even after incorporating CeO2 NPs. The cellular viability study showed the safety of the PAN nanofibers. Incorporating CeO2 NPs into these fibers further increased their cellular viability. Moreover, the assembled filter could prevent viral entry into the host cells as well as prevent their replication inside the cells via adsorption and virucidal antiviral mechanisms.

CONCLUSIONS

The developed cerium oxide nanoparticles/polyacrylonitrile nanofibers can be considered a promising antiviral filter that can be used to halt virus spread.

Effect of Ag content on the nanostructure and antimicrobial activity of CeO2

The morphological and antibacterial effects of CeO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) with different amounts of Ag precursor were studied. The samples were synthesized with different percentages of silver nitrate content by co-precipitation method. The cerium nitrate hexahydrate was a precursor of Ce reagent, polyvinylpyrrolidone as dispersant agent, and ammonium hydroxide as a precipitating agent. The obtained particles were annealed at 400 °C and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N₂ physisorption. The particles show high crystallinity, whose size decreases slightly by the effect of Ag precursor incorporation. These particle morphologies studied by SEM and TEM revealed the spherical shape of CeO₂ NPs. Furthermore, the Ag particles were observed with a size of around 30 nm. Selected area electron diffraction patterns confirm the cubic structure of CeO₂, also the cubic structure of Ag particles. Besides, it was determined that Ag incorporation has no significant influence on the textural properties of NPs. In addition, the antibacterial activity was evaluated against gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms. The quantitative results showed that the antimicrobial activity increased depending on the Ag amount incorporated, reaching up to 99.999% of the growing reduction rate.

Evaluation of Apical and Molecular Effects of Algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata to Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles

Cerium oxide engineered nanoparticles (nCeO₂) are widely used in various applications and are, also, increasingly being detected in different environmental matrixes. However, their impacts on the aquatic environment remain poorly quantified. Hence, there is a need to investigate their effects on non-target aquatic organisms. Here, we evaluated the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of <25 nm uncoated-nCeO₂ on algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. Apical (growth and chlorophyll a (Chl a) content) and genotoxic effects were investigated at 62.5-1000 µg/L after 72 and 168 h. Results demonstrated that nCeO₂ induced significant growth inhibition after 72 h and promotion post 96-168 h. Conversely, nCeO₂ induced enhanced Chl a content post 72 h, but no significant changes were observed between nCeO₂-exposed and control samples after 168 h. Hence, the results indicate P. subcapitata photosynthetic system recovery ability to nCeO₂ effects under chronic-exposure conditions. RAPD-PCR profiles showed the appearance and/or disappearance of normal bands relative to controls; indicative of DNA damage and/or DNA mutation. Unlike cell recovery observed post 96 h, DNA damage persisted over 168 h. Thus, sub-lethal nCeO₂-induced toxicological effects may pose a more serious threat to algae than at present anticipated.

Self-assembled three-dimensional hydrogels based on graphene derivatives and cerium oxide nanoparticles: scaffolds for co-culture of oligodendrocytes and neurons derived from neural stem cells

Stem cell-based therapies have shown promising results for the regeneration of the nervous system. However, the survival and integration of the stem cells in the neural circuitry is suboptimal and might compromise the therapeutic outcomes of this approach. The development of functional scaffolds capable of actively interacting with stem cells may overcome the current limitations of stem cell-based therapies. In this study, three-dimensional hydrogels based on graphene derivatives and cerium oxide (CeO₂) nanoparticles are presented as prospective supports allowing neural stem cell adhesion, migration and differentiation. The morphological, mechanical and electrical properties of the resulting hydrogels can be finely tuned by controlling several parameters of the self-assembly of graphene oxide sheets, namely the amount of incorporated reducing agent (ascorbic acid) and CeO₂ nanoparticles. The intrinsic properties of the hydrogels, as well as the presence of CeO₂ nanoparticles, clearly influence the cell fate. Thus, stiffer adhesion substrates promote differentiation to glial cell lineages, while softer substrates enhance mature neuronal differentiation. Remarkably, CeO₂ nanoparticle-containing hydrogels support the differentiation of neural stem cells to neuronal, astroglial and oligodendroglial lineage cells, promoting the in vitro generation of nerve tissue grafts that might be employed in neuroregenerative cell therapies.

Tea polyphenols mediated biogenic synthesis of chitosan-coated cerium oxide (CS/CeO2) nanocomposites and their potent antimicrobial capabilities

In the present study, we hypothesized that novel nanocomposites of chitosan-coated cerium oxide (CS/CeO₂ NCs) derived from aqueous extracts of tea polyphenols would be stabilized and reduced by using green chemistry. The UV-visible spectrum of the synthesized material revealed an SPR peak at 279 nm, and the morphological characteristics of nanoparticles (NPs) as a uniformly distributed spherical shape with a size range of 20 nm were confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectrum illustrated the amino groups of chitosan-coated with CeO₂ NPs on the surface. While, the hydrodynamic size (376 nm) and surface charge (+ 25.0 mV) of particles were assessed by dynamic light scattering (DLS), and the existence of oxidation state elements Ce 3d, O 1 s, and C 1 s was identified by employing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A cubic fluorite polycrystalline structure with a crystallite size of (5.24 nm) NPs was determined using an X-ray Diffractometer (XRD). The developed CS/CeO₂ NCs demonstrated excellent antibacterial and antifungal efficacy against foodborne pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Botrytis cinerea with zone of inhibition of 13.5 ± 0.2 and 11.7 ± 0.2 mm, respectively. The results elucidated the potential of biosynthesized CS/CeO₂ NCs could be utilized as potent antimicrobial agents in the food and agriculture industries.

Development and Characterization of Electrospun Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) Biopapers Containing Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles for Active Food Packaging Applications

Food quality is mainly affected by oxygen through oxidative reactions and the proliferation of microorganisms, generating changes in its taste, odor, and color. The work presented here describes the generation and further characterization of films with active oxygen scavenging properties made of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) loaded with cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO₂NPs) obtained by electrospinning coupled to a subsequent annealing process, which could be used as coating or interlayer in a multilayer concept for food packaging applications. The aim of this work is to explore the capacities of these novel biopolymeric composites in terms of O₂ scavenging capacity, as well as antioxidant, antimicrobial, barrier, thermal, and mechanical properties. To obtain such biopapers, different ratios of CeO₂NPs were incorporated into a PHBV solution with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant. The produced films were analyzed in terms of antioxidant, thermal, antioxidant, antimicrobial, optical, morphological and barrier properties, and oxygen scavenging activity. According to the results, the nanofiller showed some reduction of the thermal stability of the biopolyester but exhibited antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In terms of passive barrier properties, the CeO₂NPs decreased the permeability to water vapor but increased the limonene and oxygen permeability of the biopolymer matrix slightly. Nevertheless, the oxygen scavenging activity of the nanocomposites showed significant results and improved further by incorporating the surfactant CTAB. The PHBV nanocomposite biopapers developed in this study appear as very interesting constituents for the potential design of new active organic recyclable packaging materials.

The role of nanocerianite (CeO2) in the stability of Ce carbonates at low-hydrothermal conditions

The formation of cerianite (CeO₂) was investigated at low hydrothermal conditions (35-205 °C) via two experimental settings: (1) crystallisation from solution experiments, and (2) replacement of Ca-Mg carbonates (calcite, dolomite, aragonite) mediated by Ce-bearing aqueous solutions. The solid samples were studied with a combination of powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results revealed a multi-step crystallisation pathway: amorphous Ce carbonate → Ce-lanthanite [Ce₂(CO₃)₃·8H₂O] → Ce-kozoite [orthorhombic CeCO₃(OH)] → Ce-hydroxylbastnasite [hexagonal CeCO₃(OH)] → cerianite [CeO₂]. We found that Ce carbonates can decarbonise in the final stage of the reaction, forming cerianite which significantly increases the porosity of the solids. The redox behaviour of Ce combined with the temperature, and the availability of CO₂ ^3- govern this crystallisation sequence, the sizes, morphologies, and crystallisation mechanisms of the solid phases. Our results explain the occurrence and behaviour of cerianite in natural deposits. These findings also present a simple, environmental-friendly, and cost-efficient method for the synthesis of Ce carbonates and cerianite with tailored structures and chemistries.

Regulating the microenvironment with nanomaterials: Potential strategies to ameliorate COVID-19

COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has resulted in serious economic and health burdens. Current treatments remain inadequate to extinguish the epidemic, and efficient therapeutic approaches for COVID-19 are urgently being sought. Interestingly, accumulating evidence suggests that microenvironmental disorder plays an important role in the progression of COVID-19 in patients. In addition, recent advances in nanomaterial technologies provide promising opportunities for alleviating the altered homeostasis induced by a viral infection, providing new insight into COVID-19 treatment. Most literature reviews focus only on certain aspects of microenvironment alterations and fail to provide a comprehensive overview of the changes in homeostasis in COVID-19 patients. To fill this gap, this review systematically discusses alterations of homeostasis in COVID-19 patients and potential mechanisms. Next, advances in nanotechnology-based strategies for promoting homeostasis restoration are summarized. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects of using nanomaterials for COVID-19 management. This review provides a new strategy and insights into treating COVID-19 and other diseases associated with microenvironment disorders.

Biosynthesis of phyto functionalized cerium oxide nanoparticles mediated from Scoparia dulsis L. for appraisal of anti-cancer potential against adenocarcinomic lung cancer cells and paracetamol sensing potentiality

This research work aims at the eco-friendly preparation of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeSD NPs) utilizing the natural extract of Scoparia dulsis L. An attempt was made to analyze the influence of the fuel load on the size, shape, and optical properties of the nanoparticles. The p-XRD studies revealed the controlled formation of NPs with a size not more than 12.74 nm. The surface area studies appraise the mesoporous nature of the synthesized ceria particles, with the maximum specific surface area of 36.06 m²g^-1. The nano-regime CeO₂ nanoparticles had a definite impact on biomedical and electrochemical studies. The CeSD NPs with minuscule size (10.69 nm) manifested promising antioxidant and human RBC protection activity. The antioxidant properties were evaluated using % DPPH inhibition with of maximum of 83.38. The stabilization of RBC's by CeSD NPs was maximum at 94.97%. However, the CeSD NPs with apparent size (12.74 nm) that utilized greater volume fuel (25 mL) had noticeable results on adenocarcinomic lung (A549) cancer cell viability and antidiabetic study which was maximum of 70.16% at concentration 500 μg/mL. A satisfactory antibacterial application was proffered against chosen bacterial stains. The smallest size CeO₂ NPs exhibited the best proton diffusion coefficient (8.16 × 10^-6 cm²s^-1), and the capacitance values of the CeSD NPs are near in all samples (~ 1.17 to 2.00 F) manifest their compact nano-regime sizes. The paracetamol drug was chosen as analyte to appreciating the superlative efficiency for sensing paracetamol drug with the lowest detection limit.

Changes in mechanical and bacterial properties of denture base resin following nanoceria incorporation with and without SBA-15 carriers

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a commonly used material for the fabrication of biomedical appliances. Although PMMA has several advantages, it is susceptible to microbial insults with practical use. Therefore, different bioactive nanomaterials, such as nanoceria (CeN), have been proposed to enhance the properties of PMMA. In this study, we investigated the effect of the incorporation of CeN into PMMA with and without the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticle (SBA-15) carriers. The unmodified PMMA specimens (control, CTRL) were compared to groups containing SBA-15, CeN, and the synthesized SBA-15 impregnated with CeN (SBA-15@CeN) at different loading percentages. The mechanical and physical properties of the different SBA-15@CeN groups and their effects on cell viability were investigated, and the optimal CeN concentration was identified accordingly. Our results revealed that flexural strength was significantly (P < 0.01) reduced in the SBA-15@CeN_3× group (containing 3-fold the CeN wt. %). Although the surface microhardness increased with the increase in the wt. % of SBA-15@CeN, cell viability was significantly reduced (P < 0.001). The SBA-15@CeN_1× group had the optimal concentration and displayed significant resistance to single-and multispecies microbial colonization. Finally, the enzymatic activity of CeN was significantly high in the SBA-15@CeN_1× group. The proinflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, CD80, and CD86) showed a significant (P < 0.001) multifold reduction in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW cells treated with a 5-day eluate of the SBA-15@CeN_1× group. These results indicate that the addition of SBA-15@CeN at 1.5 wt % improves the biological response of PMMA without compromising its mechanical properties.

Role of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles and Doxorubicin in Improving Cancer Management: A Mini Review

Cancer is one of the significant issues with public health and the second leading cause of death worldwide. The three most lethal cancers in the general population are stomach, lung, and liver cancers, in which lung and breast cancers cause the majority of cancer-associated deaths among men and women, respectively. CeO2 nanoparticles have a cytoprotectant effect in normal cells and a cytotoxic effect in cancer cells that enables them to induce the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production within cancer cells, which in turn develops reactive nitrogen species (RNS) that interfere with intracellular activities, and this property makes them an excellent anticancer agent. Because of its biofilm suppression, free radical scavenging ability, redox activity, and other unique properties, attention has been bestowed on cerium oxide nanoparticles as a potential alternative to solve many biomedical issues in the future. This review mainly focuses on the combinatorial effect of cerium dioxide nanoparticles and Doxorubicin in cancer management.

Alginate/Gelatin Hydrogel Scaffold Containing nCeO2 as a Potential Osteogenic Nanomaterial for Bone Tissue Engineering

Background

Clinicians frequently face difficulties when trying to fix bone abnormalities. Gelatin-Alginate (GA) is frequently employed as a carrier because it is non-toxic, biodegradable, and has a three-dimensional network structure. Meanwhile, cerium oxide nanoparticles (nCeO₂) demonstrated high antioxidant enzyme simulation activity. Therefore, in order to develop a porous hydrogel scaffold for the application of bone tissue engineering, an appropriate-type GA-nCeO₂ hydrogel scaffold was developed and evaluated.

Methods

 GA-nCeO₂ hydrogel scaffold was prepared by the lyophilized method and characterized. The surface morphology and cell adhesion of the scaffold were observed by the scanning electron microscope. CCK8 and live-dead staining methods were used to evaluate its biological safety and cell proliferation. Then the osteogenic differentiation in early and late stages was discussed. The expression of osteogenic genes was also detected by RT-PCR. Finally, a bone defect model was made in SD rats, and bone formation in vivo was detected.

Results

 The results showed that GA-nCeO₂ hydrogel scaffold exhibited a typical three-dimensional porous structure with a mean pore ratio of 70.61 ± 1.94%. The GA-nCeO₂ hydrogel was successfully endowed with simulated enzyme activity including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) after the addition of nCeO₂. Osteoblasts demonstrated superior cell proliferation and adhesion on composite scaffolds, and both mineralization test and gene expression demonstrated the strong osteogenic potential of GA-nCeO₂ hydrogel. The outcomes of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and Masson trichrome staining in the femoral defect model of SD rats further supported the scaffold's favorable biocompatibility and bone-promoting capacity.

Conclusion

Due to its favorable safety, degradability, and bone formation property, GA-nCeO₂ hydrogel was anticipated to be used as a potential bone defect healing material.

Noninvasive Delivery of Self-Regenerating Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles to Modulate Oxidative Stress in the Retina

Diseases affecting the retina, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, and retinal vein occlusions, are currently treated by the intravitreal injection of drug formulations. These disease pathologies are driven by oxidative damage due to chronic high concentrations of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the retina. Intravitreal injections often induce retinal detachment, intraocular hemorrhage, and endophthalmitis. Furthermore, the severe eye pain associated with these injections lead to patient noncompliance and treatment discontinuation. Hence, there is a critical need for the development of a noninvasive therapy that is effective for a prolonged period for treating retinal diseases. In this study, we developed a noninvasive cerium oxide nanoparticle (CNP) delivery wafer (Cerawafer) for the modulation of ROS in the retina. We fabricated Cerawafer loaded with CNP and determined its SOD-like enzyme-mimetic activity and ability to neutralize ROS generated in vitro. We demonstrated Cerawafer's ability to deliver CNP in a noninvasive fashion to the retina in healthy mouse eyes and the CNP retention in the retina for more than a week. Our studies have demonstrated the in vivo efficacy of the Cerawafer to modulate ROS and associated down-regulation of VEGF expression in the retinas of very-low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout (vldlr-/-) mouse model. The development of a Cerawafer nanotherapeutic will fulfill a hitherto unmet need. Currently, there is no such therapeutic available, and the development of a Cerawafer nanotherapeutic will be a major advancement in the treatment of retinal diseases.

CeO2-Azacrown Conjugate as a Nanoplatform for Combined Radiopharmaceuticals

This study is one of the first attempts to assess CeO₂ nanoparticles as a nanoplatform for radiopharmaceuticals with radionuclides. The process of functionalization using a bifunctional azacrown ligand is described, and the resulting conjugates are characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy. Their complexes with ²⁰⁷Bi show a high stability in medically relevant media, thus encouraging the further study of these conjugates in vivo as potential combined radiopharmaceuticals.

Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Review of Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Effects

In the last few years, the progress made in the field of nanotechnology has allowed researchers to develop and synthesize nanosized materials with unique physicochemical characteristics, suitable for various biomedical applications. Amongst these nanomaterials, metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) have gained increasing interest due to their excellent properties, which to a great extent differ from their bulk counterpart. However, despite such positive advantages, a substantial body of literature reports on their cytotoxic effects, which are directly correlated to the nanoparticles' physicochemical properties, therefore, better control over the synthetic parameters will not only lead to favorable surface characteristics but may also increase biocompatibility and consequently lower cytotoxicity. Taking into consideration the enormous biomedical potential of MONPs, the present review will discuss the most recent developments in this field referring mainly to synthesis methods, physical and chemical characterization and biological effects, including the pro-regenerative and antitumor potentials as well as antibacterial activity. Moreover, the last section of the review will tackle the pressing issue of the toxic effects of MONPs on various tissues/organs and cell lines.

Template-Less and Surfactant-Less Synthesis of CeO2 Nanostructures for Catalytic Application in Ipso-hydroxylation of Aryl Boronic Acids and the aza-Michael Reaction

Due to its excellent physicochemical properties, CeO₂ has found great importance as an electrochemical and in electronics, photocatalysis, sensing, and heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we report the surfactant-less and template-less synthesis of CeO₂ nanostructures by the hydrothermal method. The synthesized CeO₂ nanostructures have been characterized in detail by electron microscopy, spectroscopy, diffractometry, and other analytical methods. The XRD studies revealed the formation of pure crystalline CeO_2, possessing a cubic fluorite structure with an average crystallite size of 15.6 to 16.4 nm. Electron microscopy studies reveal the formation of cube-shaped CeO₂ nanostructures with sizes below 25 nm. The cube-shaped CeO₂ nanostructures exhibited a higher BET surface area compared to their bulk counterparts. The XPS analysis has confirmed the existence of Ce in the mixed oxidation states of +3 and +4, while O is present as O^2- in the sample. The as-synthesized CeO₂ nanostructures exhibit excellent catalytic activity in both the ipso-hydroxylation of aryl boronic acids and the aza-Michael reaction. The analysis of the used catalyst has confirmed its stability under the reported reaction conditions. The catalysts retain their catalytic activity up to the fifth run in both types of reactions, which is economically beneficial for industrial application.

A Nanomedicine Structure-Activity Framework for Research, Development, and Regulation of Future Cancer Therapies

Despite their clinical success in drug delivery applications, the potential of theranostic nanomedicines is hampered by mechanistic uncertainty and a lack of science-informed regulatory guidance. Both the therapeutic efficacy and the toxicity of nanoformulations are tightly controlled by the complex interplay of the nanoparticle's physicochemical properties and the individual patient/tumor biology; however, it can be difficult to correlate such information with observed outcomes. Additionally, as nanomedicine research attempts to gradually move away from large-scale animal testing, the need for computer-assisted solutions for evaluation will increase. Such models will depend on a clear understanding of structure-activity relationships. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the field of cancer nanomedicine and provides a knowledge framework and foundational interaction maps that can facilitate future research, assessments, and regulation. By forming three complementary maps profiling nanobio interactions and pathways at different levels of biological complexity, a clear picture of a nanoparticle's journey through the body and the therapeutic and adverse consequences of each potential interaction are presented.

The promising role of hypoxia-resistant insulin-producing cells in ameliorating diabetes mellitus in vivo

Aim:

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of hypoxia-persistent insulin-producing cells (IPCs) against diabetes in vivo.

Materials & methods:

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) differentiation into IPCs in the presence of Se/Ti (III) or CeO₂ nanomaterials. IPCs were subjected to hypoxia and hypoxia genes were analyzed. PKH-26-labeled IPCs were infused in diabetic rats to evaluate their anti-diabetic potential.

Results:

MSCs were differentiated into functional IPCs. IPCs exhibited overexpression of anti-apoptotic genes and down-expression of hypoxia and apoptotic genes. IPCs implantation elicited glucose depletion and elevated insulin, HK and G6PD levels. They provoked VEGF and PDX-1 upregulation and HIF-1α and Caspase-3 down-regulation. IPCs transplantation ameliorated the destabilization of pancreatic tissue architecture.

Conclusion:

The chosen nanomaterials were impressive in generating hypoxia-resistant IPCs that could be an inspirational strategy for curing diabetes.

Transplantation of cells that can release insulin have been reported as an alternate method to islet transfer for curing diabetes; however, the main difficulty facing the quality of the pancreatic cells is the deficiency of oxygen. Thus, this study was done to discover a new curing method for diabetes by producing cells that can release insulin and could survive under low oxygen circumstances, and assessing their healing ability against diabetes in rats.

Multiomics analyses uncover nanoceria triggered oxidative injury and nutrient imbalance in earthworm Eisenia fetida

The toxic stress caused by nanoceria remains vague owing to the limited efforts scrutinizing its molecular mechanisms. Herein, we investigated the impacts of nanoceria on earthworm Eisenia fetida, at the molecular level using the multiomics-based profiling approaches (transcriptomics, metabolomics, and 16 S rRNA sequencing). Nanoceria (50 and 500 mg/kg) significantly increased the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), Fe, and K in worms, suggesting oxidative injury and nutrient imbalance. This was corroborated by the transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. Nanoceria decreased the levels of certain genes and metabolites associated with glycerolipid and glycerophospholipid metabolisms, suggesting the production of reactive oxygen species and subsequent oxidative stress. Additionally, the ABCD3 gene belonging to ABC transporter family was upregulated, facilitating Fe uptake by worms. Moreover, the higher contents of MDA, Fe, and K after exposure were tightly associated with the imbalanced intestinal flora. Specifically, a higher relative abundance of Actinobacteriota and a lower relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Patescibacteria were induced. This study, for the first time, revealed that nanoceria at nonlethal levels caused oxidative stress and nutrient imbalance of earthworms from the perspective of genes, metabolites, and gut microbiome perturbations, and also established links between the gut microbiome and the overall physiological responses of the host.

Highly efficient and selective heterogeneous catalytic reduction of 2-nitroaniline by cerium oxide nanocatalyst under microwave irradiation

Efficient nanocatalyst with incredible performance is highly demanding in a heterogeneous catalysis system. Herein, we report the facile fabrication of uniform and highly stable Cerium Oxide nanoparticles (CeO₂ NPs), through chemical precipitation method using sodium hydroxide as reducing agent. The synthesized material is characterized through highly sophisticated techniques including UV-Visible, FT-IR, SEM, AFM, XRD, and Zeta Sizer- Potential to check the particle formation, surface morphology, topography, crystalline nature, size, and surface potential. The heterogeneous catalytic performance of CeO₂ NPs has been accomplished for the reduction of 2-nitroaniline from the aqueous media. The CeO₂ nanocatalyst displayed excellent reusability, while the reduction in several repetitive catalytic cycles against 2-nitroaniline under optimized conditions. The CeO₂ nanocatalyst shows 99.12% efficiency within 60s reaction time under a greener source of microwave radiation.
