Conversion of Carbon Dioxide into a Series of CBxOy- Compounds Mediated by LaB3,4O2- Anions: Synergy of the Electron Transfer and Lewis Pair Mechanisms to Construct B-C Bonds

Converting CO2 into value-added products containing B-C bonds is a great challenge, especially for multiple B-C bonds, which are versatile building blocks for organoborane chemistry. In the condensed phase, the B-C bond is typically formed through transition metal-catalyzed direct borylation of hydrocarbons via C-H bond activation or transition metal-catalyzed insertion of carbenes into B-H bonds. However, excessive amounts of powerful boryl reagents are required, and products containing B-C bonds are complex. Herein, a novel method to construct multiple B-C bonds at room temperature is proposed by the gas-phase reactions of CO2 with LaBmOn- (m = 1-4, n = 1 or 2). Mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations are applied to investigate these reactions, and a series of new compounds, CB2O2-, CB3O3-, and CB3O2-, which possess B-C bonds, are generated in the reactions of LaB3,4O2- with CO2. When the number of B atoms in the clusters is reduced to 2 or 1, there is only CO-releasing channel, and no CBxOy- compounds are released. Two major factors are responsible for this quite intriguing reactivity: (1) Synergy of electron transfer and boron-boron Lewis acid-base pair mechanisms facilitates the rupture of C═O double bond in CO2. (2) The boron sites in the clusters can efficiently capture the newly formed CO units in the course of reactions, favoring the formation of B-C bonds. This finding may provide fundamental insights into the CO2 transformation driven by clusters containing lanthanide atoms and how to efficiently build B-C bonds under room temperature.

The Versatile and Strategic O-Carbamate Directed Metalation Group in the Synthesis of Aromatic Molecules: An Update

The aryl O-carbamate (ArOAm) group is among the strongest of the directed metalation groups (DMGs) in directed ortho metalation (DoM) chemistry, especially in the form Ar-OCONEt2. Since the last comprehensive review of metalation chemistry involving ArOAms (published more than 30 years ago), the field has expanded significantly. For example, it now encompasses new substrates, solvent systems, and metalating agents, while conditions have been developed enabling metalation of ArOAm to be conducted in a green and sustainable manner. The ArOAm group has also proven to be effective in the anionic ortho-Fries (AoF) rearrangement, Directed remote metalation (DreM), iterative DoM sequences, and DoM-halogen dance (HalD) synthetic strategies and has been transformed into a diverse range of functionalities and coupled with various groups through a range of cross-coupling (CC) strategies. Of ultimate value, the ArOAm group has demonstrated utility in the synthesis of a diverse range of bioactive and polycyclic aromatic compounds for various applications.

Iridium-Catalyzed C-H Borylations: Regioselective Functionalizations of Calix[4]arene Macrocycles

We report iridium-catalyzed C-H borylations for the regioselective synthesis of distally disubstituted calix[4]arene macrocycles. The atom- and step-economical method led to a broad family of calix[4]arenes in good yields and functional group tolerance. The synthetic utility of the C-H borylation protocol was finally illustrated with several late-stage modifications for the synthesis of elaborate calix[4]arenes frameworks, otherwise challenging to achieve with commonly employed procedures.

Cu(II)-Catalyzed Hydroboration Reactions of 1,1-Disubstituted α,β-Unsaturated Ketones, Esters, and Amides in Pure Water

Here, a Cu2(OH)2CO3-catalyzed hydroboration reaction of 1,1-disubstituted α,β-unsaturated compounds has been developed. The reaction was carried out using water as a solvent at room temperature except for N-monosubstituted α,β-unsaturated amides. This method is applicable to diverse 1,1-disubstituted α,β-unsaturated ketones, esters, and amides, showing excellent reactivity (up to 98% yield). Gram-scale experiments and functional group transformations further demonstrated the practicality of this method.

Thermodynamic H-Abstraction Abilities of Nitrogen Centered Radical Cations as Potential Hydrogen Atom Transfer Catalysts in Y-H Bond Functionalization

Y-H bond functionalization has always been the focus of research interest in the area of organic synthesis. Direct hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the Y-H bond is one of the most efficient and practical methods to activate the Y-H bond. Recently, nitrogen centered radical cations were broadly utilized as H-abstraction catalysts to activate Y-H bonds via the HAT process. As a type of HAT catalyst, the H-affinity of nitrogen centered radical cations is a significant thermodynamic parameter to quantitatively evaluate the thermodynamic H-abstraction potentials of nitrogen centered radical cations. In this work, the pK a values of 120 protonated N-containing compounds in acetonitrile (AN) are predicted, and the H-affinities of 120 nitrogen centered radical cations in AN are derived from the reduction potentials of nitrogen centered radical cations and pK a of protonated N-containing compounds using Hess' law. This work focuses on the H-abstraction abilities of 120 nitrogen centered radical cations in AN to enrich the molecule library of novel HAT catalysts or H-abstractors and provides valuable thermodynamic guidelines for the application of nitrogen centered radical cations in Y-H bond functionalization.

Tuning the Emission Properties of 2,1,3-Benzothiadiazoles via Regioselective Substitution

The 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD) unit is a prominent building block commonly used in various research areas such as optoelectronics and bioimaging. Despite its great versatility, the development of strategies to elaborate BTD has been largely neglected, including exploring its reactivity and understanding how regioselective functionalization can be used to tune the fluorescence emission. Previous focus has primarily been on C4- or C4,C7-substitutions. Here, a series of unsymmetrical mono - and disubstituted BTDs was synthesized and characterized for their photophysical properties. The reaction scope includes all six possible substituent patterns on the BTD benzoid ring (C4-, C5-, C4,C5-, C4,C6-, C4,C7- and C5,C6-substitution), which comprise arrangements that previously been synthetically challenging to access. By introducing a methoxy and/or a phenyl group we demonstrate that the emissive behavior of BTD derivatives strongly depends on the position of the substituent (s). We show that regioselective substitution on BTD can engender long-lived fluorescence and circumvent strong fluorescence quenching in polar protic solvents, which is a limitation of many previously described BTD derivatives.

Boronyl-Group-Assisted Decatungstate-Catalyzed Benzylic C(sp3)-H Alkylation

Boronic acid synthesis primarily involves the introduction of boronyl groups. However, an alternative route that involves the functionalization of boronic acids has not received much attention. This study describes the catalytic C(sp3)-H alkylation of ortho-tolylboronic acids utilizing the interaction between a free boronyl group [-B(OH)2] and a decatungstate photocatalyst [W10O32]4-. The boronyl groups of the alkylated products could be converted without isolation of the alkylated product.

Transition Metal-Free Catalytic C-H Zincation and Alumination

C-H metalation is the most efficient method to prepare aryl-zinc and -aluminium complexes that are ubiquitous nucleophiles. Virtually all C-H metalation routes to form Al/Zn organometallics require stoichiometric, strong Brønsted bases with no base-catalyzed reactions reported. Herein we present a catalytic in amine/ammonium salt (Et3N/[(Et3N)H]+) C-H metalation process to form aryl-zinc and aryl-aluminium complexes. Key to this approach is coupling an endergonic C-H metalation step with a sufficiently exergonic dehydrocoupling step between the ammonium salt by-product of C-H metalation ([(Et3N)H]+) and a Zn-H or Al-Me containing complex. This step, forming H2/MeH, makes the overall cycle exergonic while generating more of the reactive metal electrophile. Mechanistic studies supported by DFT calculations revealed metal-specific dehydrocoupling pathways, with the divergent reactivity due to the different metal valency (which impacts the accessibility of amine-free cationic metal complexes) and steric environment. Notably, dehydrocoupling in the zinc system proceeds through a ligand-mediated pathway involving protonation of the β-diketiminate Cγ position. Given this process is applicable to two disparate metals (Zn and Al), other main group metals and ligand sets are expected to be amenable to this transition metal-free, catalytic C-H metalation.

A-Frame-Templated High-Coordinate Platinum(IV) cis-Bis(boryl) Complexes

The addition of Et2O·BF3 or Me2S·BCl3 to the BNBN-cumulene-bridged Pt(II) A-frame complexes [(μ-1,1-BNBN(TMS)2)(μ-dmpm)2Pt2X2] (TMS = SiMe3, dmpm = CH2(PMe2)2, X = Br 1Br, I 1I) resulted in the oxidative addition of one B-F or B-Cl bond, respectively, to the internal BN bond of the bridging, iminoborane-like B-N≡B-N moiety, and coordination of one Pt(II) center to the resulting adjacent BF2 (complex 2Br-F) or BCl2 (complexes 2Br-Cl and 2I-Cl) moiety, respectively. X-ray crystallographic and multinuclear NMR-spectroscopic data show that the Pt→BF2 interaction in 2Br-F is very weak and merely electrostatic, while the Pt→BCl2 interaction in 2Br-Cl and 2I-Cl is a stronger donor-acceptor bond. In contrast, the reaction of Me2S·BBr3 with 1Br yielded a ca. 3:2 mixture of the analogous B-Br addition product to the iminoborane, 2Br-Br, and the product of a subsequent oxidative addition of one B-Br bond of the chelating BBr2 moiety to the adjacent platinum center, the mixed-valence boranediyl-bridged, Pt(II)-Pt(IV)-bromoboryl complex 3-Br5. The analogous reactions of Me2S·BI3 with 1Br and Me2S·BBr3 with 1I yielded complex product mixtures of Pt(II)-Pt(II)-borane (2Br-I and 2I-Br, respectively) and Pt(II)-Pt(IV)-boryl complexes (3-BrnI5-n, n = 1-3) analogous to 2X-Y and 3-Br5, respectively, the proportion of the latter increasing with the proportion of iodide in the precursor mixture. Both multinuclear NMR-spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic data show evidence of complex and extensive inter- and intramolecular bromide-iodide exchanges between the soft, iodide-affine platinum centers and the harder, more bromide-affine boron centers. A clue to the mechanism of these halide exchanges is provided by the reactions of BBr2Ar (Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 (Mes), 2,3,5,6-Me4C6H (Dur)) with 1Br, which yielded the cationic Pt(II)-Pt(II)-borenium analogues of 2Br-Br, the complexes 4Br-Ar, generated by the sterics-induced displacement of the bromide substituent from the chelating Pt→BBrAr moiety, and displaying a rare metal→borenium donor-acceptor bond.

Synthetic progress of organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters via C-H activation and functionalization

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have become increasingly prominent due to their promising applications across various fields, prompting a continuous demand for developing reliable synthetic methods to access them. This review aims to highlight the progress made in the last decade in synthesizing organic TADF compounds through C-H bond activation and functionalization. The review begins with a brief introduction to the basic features and design principles of TADF emitters. It then provides an overview of the advantages and concise development of C-H bond transformations in constructing TADF emitters. Subsequently, it summarizes both transition-metal-catalyzed and non-transition-metal-promoted C-H bond transformations used for the synthesis of TADF emitters. Finally, the review gives an outlook on further challenges and potential directions in this field.

Catalyst Design for Rh-Catalyzed Arene and Alkane C-H Borylation: The NHC Affects the Induction Period, and Indenyl is Superior to Cp

In order to establish design criteria for Rh C-H borylation catalysts, analogues of the successful catalyst [Rh(Ind)(SIDipp)(COE)] (Ind = η5-indenyl, SIDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene, and COE = cis-cyclooctene) were synthesized by changing the indenyl and carbene ligands. [RhCp(SIDipp)(COE)] (1) formed alongside the C-C activated, cyclometalated byproduct [RhCp(κ2CAr,Ccarbene-SIDipp')(iPr)] (rac-2; SIDipp' = 1-(6-isopropylphenyl)-3-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene). Computational modeling of COE dissociation showed that both C-C and C-H activation of the SIDipp aryl group is thermally attainable and reversible under experimental conditions, with the C-C activation products being the more thermodynamically stable species. Oxidative addition of 1 with SiH(OEt)3 gave the Rh silyl hydride [RhCp(H){Si(OEt)3}(SIDipp)] (rac-3). [Rh(Ind)(IDipp)(COE)] (4; IDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazole-2-ylidene), the carbonyl analogue [Rh(Ind)(IDipp)(CO)] (5; νCO = 1940 cm-1, cf. 1944 cm-1 for [Rh(Ind)(SIDipp)(COE)]), and [Rh(Ind)(IMe4)(COE)] (6; IMe4 = 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene) were also characterized, but attempts to synthesize Rh carbene complexes with fluorenyl or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrofluorenyl ligands were not successful. For the catalytic C-H borylation of benzene using B2pin2, 1 was inactive at 80 °C, and [Rh(Ind)(SIDipp)(COE)] was superior to all other complexes tested due to the shortest induction period. However, the addition of HBpin to precatalyst 4 eliminated the induction period. Catalytic n-alkane C-H borylation using [Rh(Ind)(NHC)(COE)] gave yields of up to 21% alkylBpin, but [RhCp*(C2H4)2] was the better catalyst.

Metal-Free ortho C-H Borylation of Thiobenzamides

A BBr3-mediated S-directed ortho C-H borylation of thiobenzamides was developed. A variety of ortho-borylated thiobenzamides were obtained in moderate to good yields with a wide functional group tolerance under simple and metal-free conditions. This transformation provided a convenient and practical route to important functionalized thiobenzamides.

Derivatization of 2,1,3-Benzothiadiazole via Regioselective C-H Functionalization and Aryne Reactivity

Despite growing interest in 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD) as an integral component of many functional molecules, methods for the functionalization of its benzenoid ring have remained limited, and many even simply decorated BTDs have required de novo synthesis. We show that regioselective Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation allows access to versatile 5-boryl or 4,6-diboryl BTD building blocks, which undergo functionalization at the C4, C5, C6, and C7 positions. The optimization and regioselectivity of C-H borylation are discussed. A broad reaction scope is presented, encompassing ipso substitution at the C-B bond, the first examples of ortho-directed C-H functionalization of BTD, ring closing reactions to generate fused ring systems, as well as the generation and capture reactions of novel BTD-based heteroarynes. The regioselectivity of the latter is discussed with reference to the Aryne Distortion Model.

Noncovalent interaction with a spirobipyridine ligand enables efficient iridium-catalyzed C-H activation

Exploitation of noncovalent interactions for recognition of an organic substrate has received much attention for the design of metal catalysts in organic synthesis. The CH-π interaction is especially of interest for molecular recognition because both the C-H bonds and the π electrons are fundamental properties of organic molecules. However, because of their weak nature, these interactions have been less utilized for the control of organic reactions. We show here that the CH-π interaction can be used to kinetically accelerate catalytic C-H activation of arenes by directly recognizing the π-electrons of the arene substrates with a spirobipyridine ligand. Computation and a ligand kinetic isotope effect study provide evidence for the CH-π interaction between the ligand backbone and the arene substrate. The rational exploitation of weak noncovalent interactions between the ligand and the substrate will open new avenues for ligand design in catalysis.

Photoinduced Site-Selective Aryl C-H Borylation with Electron-Donor-Acceptor Complex Derived from B2Pin2 and Isoquinoline

Due to boron's metalloid properties, aromatic boron reagents are prevalent synthetic intermediates. The direct borylation of aryl C-H bonds for producing aromatic boron compounds offers an appealing, one-step solution. Despite significant advances in this field, achieving regioselective aryl C-H bond borylation using simple and readily available starting materials still remains a challenge. In this work, we attempted to enhance the reactivity of the electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complex by selecting different bases to replace the organic base (NEt3) used in our previous research. To our delight, when using NH4HCO3 as the base, we have achieved a mild visible-light-mediated aromatic C-H bond borylation reaction with exceptional regioselectivity (rr > 40:1 to single isomers). Compared with our previous borylation methodologies, this protocol provides a more efficient and broader scope for aryl C-H bond borylation through the use of N-Bromosuccinimide. The protocol's good functional-group tolerance and excellent regioselectivity enable the functionalization of a variety of biologically relevant compounds and novel cascade transformations. Mechanistic experiments and theoretical calculations conducted in this study have indicated that, for certain arenes, the aryl C-H bond borylation might proceed through a new reaction mechanism, which involves the formation of a novel transient EDA complex.

Pd(II)-catalyzed cascade annulation of N-substituted anilines with CO, NH4OAc and aldehydes to N1-substituted 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones

A facile and direct approach to N1-substituted 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones has been developed via Pd(II)-catalyzed one-pot cascade annulation of N-substituted anilines with CO, NH4OAc and aldehydes, and it features an intrinsic directing strategy, cheap and easily obtainable raw materials, low cost, high step economy and efficiency, broad substrate scope and good product diversity. This protocol has been successfully applied to the synthesis of glycozolone A and gram-level experiments. Based on the control experiments and the literature, the reaction mechanism was proposed.

Trialkoxysilane-Induced Iridium-Catalyzed para-Selective C-H Bond Borylation of Arenes

An ideal approach for the construction of aryl boron compounds is to selectively replace a C-H bond in arenes with a C-B bond, and controlling regioselectivity is one of the most challenging aspects of these transformations. Herein, we report an iridium-catalyzed trialkoxysilane protecting group-assisted regioselective C-H borylation of arenes, including derivatives of benzaldehydes, acetophenones, benzoic acids, benzyl alcohols, phenols, aryl silanes, benzyl silanes, and multi-functionalized aromatic rings are all well tolerated and gave the para -selective C-H borylation products in a short time without the requirement of inert gases atmosphere. The site-selective C-H borylation can be adjustable by installing the developed trialkoxysilane protecting group on different functional groups on one aromatic ring. Importantly, the preparation process of the trialkoxychlorosilane is efficient and scalable. Mechanistic and computational studies reveal that the steric hindrance of the trialkoxysilane protecting group plays a key role in dictating the para-selectivity.

Synthesis of Boronic Esters from Organometallic Reagents and Bis(pinacolato)diboron

Synthesis of alkyl, aryl, and vinyl boronic esters carrying various chiral and achiral diol-protecting groups were synthesized starting from the corresponding alkyl, aryl, and vinyl lithium or Grignard reagents. Good to excellent yields were obtained for a large range of substrates. The reaction can be conducted in a gram scale to obtain the product over 80 % yield. This approach provides direct access to neopentyl, pinene, and other boronic esters that are difficult to achieve. Using trimethoxyborane or 2-isopropoxy pinacolboronic ester. Detailed mechanistic studies have been conducted to understand the mechanism behind the formation of boronic ester starting from organometallic reagents.

Iridium(III)-catalyzed β-trifluoromethyl enone carbonyl-directed regioselective ortho-C(sp2)-H olefination

Due to the lower LUMO energy level at the β-position of α,β-unsaturated-β-trifluoromethyl enone than that of its non-fluorinated counterpart, there is a challenge to activate the sp2 C-H bond of aromatic rings. Herein, we have reported iridium(III)-catalyzed β-trifluoromethyl enone carbonyl-directed regioselective aromatic C(sp2)-H olefination with acrylates under oxidative conditions. Furthermore, coupling with natural product-derived acrylates, scale-up and product diversification have also been performed.

Catalyst-Free Regioselective Diborylation of Aryllithium with Tetra(o-tolyl)diborane(4)

A catalyst-free 1,2-diborylation of aryllithium with tetra(o-tolyl)diborane(4) has been achieved, giving a series of 1,2-diborylaryl lithium species in excellent yields under mild reaction conditions, which leads to 1,2-di(tolyl)borylarenes in 60-91 % yields upon treatment with the hydride-abstracting reagent. In these transformations, one sp2 C-H of arene is activated and both boryl units are utilized to build two new (sp2 )C-B bonds. This represents a new strategy for selective arene diborylation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that an aromatic nucleophilic substitution is a key step in the formation of the products.

Synthesis and crystal structures of boryl ortho-silylaryl tri-fluoro-methane-sulfonates

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of three crystalline borylated ortho-silylaryl tri-fluoro-methane-sulfonates: 5-(4,4,5,5-tetra-methyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)-2-(tri-methyl-sil-yl)phenyl tri-fluoro-methane-sulfonate, C16H24BF3O5SSi (1a), 4-(4,4,5,5-tetra-methyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)-2-(tri-methyl-sil-yl)phenyl tri-fluoro-methane-sulfonate, C16H24BF3O5SSi (1b), and 2-methyl-4-(4,4,5,5-tetra-methyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)-6-(tri-methyl-silyl)phen-yl tri-fluoro-methane-sulfonate, C17H26BF3O5SSi (2), which are versatile aryne precursors. For all three compounds, the heteroatom substituents are almost coplanar with the central aromatic moiety. C-heteroatom bonding metrics are unexceptional and fall withing the typical range of C-B, C-Si, and C-O single bonds. Despite numerous electronegative sites, only weak inter-molecular inter-actions are observed in the solid state.

One-Pot Manganese (I)-Catalyzed Oxidant-Controlled Divergent Functionalization of 2-Arylindazoles

The oxidant-controlled divergent synthesis of C-2' formyl 2H-indazoles and indazoloindazolediones has been developed through Mn(I)- catalyzed ortho C-H functionalization of 2H-indazoles with para-formaldehyde to afford C-2' hydroxymethylated 2H-indazoles and subsequently oxidation with varying the amount of DDQ in one-pot. By employing selectfluor as the oxidant instead of DDQ, this reaction exclusively provided indazolebenzoxazine derivatives. This strategy delivered unsymmetrical indazoloindazoledione and indazolobenzoxazine with varied functional group tolerance in moderate to good yields.

The Recent Advances in Iron-Catalyzed C(sp3 )-H Functionalization

The use of iron as a core metal in catalysis has become a research topic of interest over the last few decades. The reasons are clear. Iron is the most abundant transition metal on Earth's crust and it is widely distributed across the world. It has been extracted and processed since the dawn of civilization. All these features render iron a noncontaminant, biocompatible, nontoxic, and inexpensive metal and therefore it constitutes the perfect candidate to replace noble metals (rhodium, palladium, platinum, iridium, etc.). Moreover, direct C-H functionalization is one of the most efficient strategies by which to introduce new functional groups into small organic molecules. The majority of organic compounds contain C(sp3 )-H bonds. Given the enormous importance of organic molecules in so many aspects of existence, the utilization and bioactivity of C(sp3 )-H bonds are of the utmost importance. This review sheds light on the substrate scope, selectivity, benefits, and limitations of iron catalysts for direct C(sp3 )-H bond activations. An overview of the use of iron catalysis in C(sp3 )-H activation protocols is summarized herein up to 2022.

Regiochemical Switching in Ir-Catalyzed C-H Borylation by Altering Ligand Loadings of N,B-Type Diboron Species

Traditional reaction conditions in Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation consist of a 2:1 ligand to Ir metal ratio, affording C(sp2)-H borylation at the least sterically hindered position. We found that lowering the ligand to metal ratio of a N,B-type diboron (BB) preligand in respect to the IrI precatalyst to 0.5:1 affords the chelate controlled ortho product. Switching from steric-directed to chelate-directed products is shown for various substituted arenes and (hetero)arenes containing Lewis-basic functionalities. This work offers the first example of obtaining complementary regioisomers as the major product by altering the ligand loading in CHB.

Borylation directed borylation of N-alkyl anilines using iodine activated pyrazaboles

Doubly electrophilic pyrazabole derivatives (pyrazabole = [H2B(μ-C3N2H3)]2) combined with one equiv. of base effect the ortho-borylation of N-alkyl anilines. Initial studies found that the bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide ([NTf2]-) pyrazabole derivative, [H(NTf2)B(μ-C3N2H3)]2, is highly effective for ortho-borylation, with this process proceeding through N-H borylation and then ortho C-H borylation. The activation of pyrazabole by I2 was developed as a cheaper and simpler alternative to using HNTf2 as the activator. The addition of I2 forms mono or ditopic pyrazabole electrophiles dependent on stoichiometry. The ditopic electrophile [H(I)B(μ-C3N2H3)]2 was also effective for the ortho-borylation of N-alkyl-anilines, with the primary C-H borylation products readily transformed into pinacol boronate esters (BPin) derivatives. Comparison of borylation reactions using the di-NTf2-and the diiodo-pyrazabole congeners revealed that more forcing conditions are required with the latter. Furthermore, the presence of iodide leads to competitive formation of side products, including [HB(μ-C3N2H3)3BH]+, which are not active for C-H borylation. Using [H(I)B(μ-C3N2H3)]2 and 0.2 equiv. of [Et3NH][NTf2] combines the higher yields of the NTf2 system with the ease of handling and lower cost of the iodide system generating an attractive process applicable to a range of N-alkyl-anilines. This methodology represents a metal free and transiently directed C-H borylation approach to form N-alkyl-2-BPin-aniline derivatives.

Amidophosphine Boranes as Hydroboration Reagents for Nitriles, Alkynes, and Carboxylic Acids

We report here the hydroboration of nitriles, alkynes, and carboxylic acids using amidophosphine boranes {(BH3)(PPh2)-NC(CH3)3}, {(BH3)2(PPh)2N(CH2)C6H5}, and {(BH3)2(PPh2)2N-(BH3)CH2C6H4N} as reducing agents. These compounds were synthesized to replace more commonly used borane reagents. Solid amidophosphine boranes, which were synthesized with ease, demonstrated excellent reactivity and functional group tolerance toward a wide variety of nitriles, alkynes, and carboxylic acids, affording the corresponding ammonium salts, alkenes, and alcohols in good yield.

A tautomerized ligand enabled meta selective C-H borylation of phenol

Remote meta selective C-H functionalization of aromatic compounds remains a challenging problem in chemical synthesis. Here, we report an iridium catalyst bearing a bidentate pyridine-pyridone (PY-PYRI) ligand framework that efficiently catalyzes this meta selective borylation reaction. We demonstrate that the developed concept can be employed to introduce a boron functionality at the remote meta position of phenols, phenol containing bioactive and drug molecules, which was an extraordinary challenge. Moreover, we have demonstrated that the method can also be applied for the remote C6 borylation of indole derivatives including tryptophan that was the key synthetic precursor for the total synthesis of Verruculogen and Fumitremorgin A alkaloids. The inspiration of this catalytic concept was started from the O-Si secondary interaction, which by means of several more detailed control experiments and detailed computational investigations revealed that an unprecedented Bpin shift occurs during the transformation of iridium bis(boryl) complex to iridium tris(boryl) complex, which eventually control the remote meta selectivity by means of the dispersion between the designed ligand and steering silane group.

Desulfurative Borylation of Small Molecules, Peptides, and Proteins

We introduce a direct conversion of alkyl thiols into boronic acids, facilitated by a water-soluble phosphine, 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA), in conjunction with tetrahydroxydiboron (B2(OH)4), acting as both a radical initiator and a boron source. This desulfurative borylation reaction has been successfully applied to various substrates, including cysteine residues in oligopeptides and small proteins, primary alkyl thiols found in pharmaceutical compounds, disulfides, and selenocysteine. Optimization of reaction conditions was undertaken to reduce the formation of unwanted reactions, such as the reduction of alanyl or other primary radicals, and to prevent deleterious reactions between the phosphine and N-terminal amine that lead to methylene adducts by utilizing a buffer containing glycine-glycine (GG) dipeptide. The developed method is characterized by its operational simplicity and robustness. Moreover, its compatibility with various functional groups present in peptides and proteins makes it a promising tool for late-stage functionalization, extending its potential application across a broad spectrum of chemical and biological targets.

Recent Expedition in Pd- and Rh-Catalyzed C(Ar) -B Bond Formations and Their Applications in Modern Organic Syntheses

Transition metal-catalyzed borylation has emerged as a powerful and versatile strategy for synthesizing organoboron compounds. These compounds have found widespread applications in various aspects, including organic synthesis, materials science, and medicinal chemistry. This review provides a concise summary of the recent advances in palladium- and rhodium-catalyzed borylation from 2013 to 2023. The review covers the representative examples of catalysts, substrates scope and reaction conditions, with particular emphasis on the development of catalyst systems, such as phosphine ligands, NHC-carbene, and more. The diverse array of borylative products obtained for further applications in Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, and other transformations, are also discussed. Future directions in this rapidly evolving field, with the goal of designing more efficient, selective borylation methodologies are highlighted, too.

Interrogating the Crucial Interactions at Play in the Chiral Cation-Directed Enantioselective Borylation of Arenes

Rendering a common ligand scaffold anionic and then pairing it with a chiral cation represents an alternative strategy for developing enantioselective versions of challenging transformations, as has been recently demonstrated in the enantioselective borylation of arenes using a quinine-derived chiral cation. A significant barrier to the further generalization of this approach is the lack of understanding of the specific interactions involved between the cation, ligand, and substrate, given the complexity of the system. We have embarked on a detailed computational study probing the mechanism, the key noncovalent interactions involved, and potential origin of selectivity for the desymmetrizing borylation of two distinct classes of substrate. We describe a deconstructive, stepwise approach to tackling this complex challenge, which involves building up a detailed understanding of the pairwise components of the nominally three component system before combining together into the full 263-atom reactive complex. This approach has revealed substantial differences in the noncovalent interactions occurring at the stereodetermining transition state for C-H oxidative addition to iridium for the two substrate classes. Each substrate engages in a unique mixture of diverse interactions, a testament to the rich and privileged structure of the cinchona alkaloid-derived chiral cations. Throughout the study, experimental support is provided, and this culminates in the discovery that prochiral phosphine oxide substrates, lacking hydrogen bond donor functionality, can also give very encouraging levels of enantioselectivity, potentially through direct interactions with the chiral cation. We envisage that the findings in this study will spur further developments in using chiral cations as controllers in asymmetric transition-metal catalysis.

Mechanism and Origins of Regio- and Stereoselective Alkylboration of Endocyclic Olefins Enabled by Nickel Catalysis

The Ni-catalyzed alkylboration of endocyclic olefins is a stereo- and regioselective approach for the synthesis of boron-containing compounds. We report a detailed density functional theory (DFT) study to elucidate the mechanism and origins of the stereo-, chemo-, and regioselectivity of alkylboration of endocyclic olefins enabled by nickel catalysis. The alkylboration proceeds via the migratory insertion of alkenes, β-H elimination of the Ni(II) complex, subsequent migratory insertion leading to a new Ni(II) complex, combined with an alkyl radical, and reductive eliminations. The electronic effects of the endocyclic olefins synergistically control the regioselectivity toward the C1- and C2-position boration. In C1-position boration, a more electron-deficient carbon atom tends to combine with an electron-rich -Bpin group and leads to C1-position boration products. The stereoselectivity is influenced by the solvent effect, and the interaction between the substrate and Ni-catalyzed groups, the low-polarity solvent 1,4-dioxane, and a favorable steric hindrance effect result in the cis-alkylboration product. Chemoselectivity toward 1,3-alkylboration results from the steric hindrance effects of the -Bpin group.

Non-Covalent Interaction-Controlled Site-Selective C-H Transformations

Site-selective C-H transformations are important to obtain desired compounds as single products in a highly efficient manner. However, it is generally difficult to achieve such transformations because organic substrates contain many C-H bonds with similar reactivities. Therefore, the development of practical and efficient methods for controlling site selectivity is highly desirable. The most frequently used strategy is "directing group method". Although this method is highly effective and promotes site-selective reactions, it has several limitations. Our group recently reported other methods to achieve site-selective C-H transformations using non-covalent interactions between a substrate and a reagent or a catalyst and a substrate (non-covalent method). In this personal account, the background of site-selective C-H transformations, our reaction design to achieve site-selective C-H transformations, and recently reported reactions are explained.

Aluminum-Boron Bond Formation by Boron Ester Oxidative Addition at an Alumanyl Anion

The potassium diamidoalumanyl, [K{Al(SiNDipp)}]2 (SiNDipp = {CH2SiMe2NDipp}2), reacts with the terminal B-O bonds of pinacolato boron esters, ROBpin (R = Me, i-Pr), and B(OMe)3 to provide potsassium (alkoxy)borylaluminate derivatives, [K{Al(SiNDipp)(OR)(Bpin)}]n (R = Me, n = 2; R = i-Pr, n = ∞) and [K{Al(SiNDipp)(OMe)(B(OMe)2)}]∞, comprising Al-B σ bonds. An initial assay of the reactivity of these species with the heteroallene molecules, N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide and CO2, highlights the kinetic inaccessibility of their Al-B bonds; only decomposition at high temperature is observed with the carbodiimide, whereas CO2 preferentially inserts into the Al-O bond of [K{Al(SiNDipp)(OMe)(Bpin)}]2 to provide a dimeric methyl carbonate species. Treatment of the acyclic dimethoxyboryl species, however, successfully liberates a terminal alumaboronic ester featuring trigonal N2Al-BO2 coordination environments at both boron and aluminum.

Combined molecular dynamics and coordinate driving method for automatically searching complicated reaction pathways

The combined molecular dynamics and coordinate driving (MD/CD) method is updated and generalized in this work to broaden its applications in automatically searching reaction pathways for complicated reactions. In this updated version, MD simulations are performed with the GFN's family of methods to systematically sample conformers for almost any systems with atomic numbers Z ≤ 86. The improved CD procedure is greatly accelerated by applying a pre-screening stage at the semiempirical GFN2-xTB level. An automatic module based on the Marcus theory and its improved version (the Wolynes theory) is designed to include single electron transfer (SET) processes into reaction pathways. The capabilities of this method are demonstrated by exploring the most possible reaction pathways of three experimentally reported reactions: the organophosphine-catalyzed trans phosphinoboration, the Fe(II) complex-mediated C(sp2)-H borylation reaction, and the SET-triggered deaminative radical cross-coupling reaction. Comprehensive reaction networks are obtained for all three reactions with reasonable computational costs. Detailed mechanisms for these reactions can account for the reported experimental facts.

Regioselective Iridium-Catalyzed C8-H Borylation of 4-Quinolones via Transient O-Borylated Quinolines

The quinolone-quinoline tautomerization is harnessed to effect the regioselective C8-borylation of biologically important 4-quinolones by using [Ir(OMe)(cod)]2 as the catalyst precursor, the silica-supported monodentate phosphine Si-SMAP as the ligand, and B2 pin2 as the boron source. Initially, O-borylation of the quinoline tautomer takes place. Critically, the newly formed 4-(pinBO)-quinolines then undergo N-directed selective Ir-catalyzed borylation at C8. Hydrolysis of the OBpin moiety on workup returns the system to the quinolone tautomer. The C8-borylated quinolines were converted to their corresponding potassium trifluoroborate (BF3 K) salts and to their C8-chlorinated quinolone derivatives. The two-step C-H borylation-chlorination reaction sequence resulted in various C8-Cl quinolones in good yields. Conversion to C8-OH-, C8-NH2 -, and C8-Ar-substituted quinolones was also feasible by using this methodology.

Pd-Catalyzed Organometallic-Free Homologation of Arylboronic Acids Enabled by Chemoselective Transmetalation

A Pd-catalyzed homologation of arylboronic acids is reported. Halomethylboronic acid pinacol esters (Bpin) undergo a remarkably facile, yet rare, oxidative addition enabled by an α-boryl effect. Simultaneous chemoselective transmetalation allows use of these metalloid reagents for formal C₁ insertion to deliver benzyl Bpin products without the requirement for stoichiometric organometallic reagents. The utility of the process is demonstrated by stepwise C(sp³)-C(sp²) cross-coupling of the boronic ester products into diarylmethane pharmacophores and electrophile/nucleophile chemoselective cross-coupling. Control experiments that demonstrate the reactivity enhancement provided by the α-boryl effect are provided, along with a description of the limitations of the formal homologation process.

Examining the Scope of Deriving β-Aryl Enones from Enol Silanes as Ketone Equivalents via Pd(II)-Mediated Sequential Dehydrosilylation and Arylation

Silyl enol ethers were examined as a masked source of saturated ketones to derive β-aryl enones and their derivatives by dehydrosilylation to generate enones in situ and subsequent oxidative arylation with arylboronic acids as transmetallation coupling partners using relayed Pd(II) catalysis in one pot under base-free conditions. Oxygen was found to be an efficient and green oxidant to enable both dehydrosilylation of enol silanes and arylation. Additionally, arylation conditions can be custom-designed to take advantage of aryl halides as an alternative source of arylating agents. The preparative scope was investigated with 35 examples (up to 95% yield), and mechanistic studies implied a cationic Pd(II)-based catalytic system.

One-Shot Construction of BN-Embedded Heptadecacene Framework Exhibiting Ultra-narrowband Green Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

BN-embedded nonacene, tridecacene, and heptadecacene frameworks were constructed using one-shot quadruple, sextuple, and octuple borylation reactions, respectively. The key to success is the judicious choice of borylating reagents and long-chain alkyl-substituted carbazolyl groups as boron-trapping groups, which suppressed the decrease in HOMO energy and insolubilization associated with borylation. Based on the product yields, each electrophilic C-H borylation proceeded in >99% yield, which is the best efficiency reported so far for C-H borylation reactions. Owing to the multiple resonance effects of boron and nitrogen, the prepared acenes exhibited ultra-narrowband green thermally activated delayed fluorescence with full-width at half-maximum of 12-16 nm; moreover, their k_RISC values were in the order of 10⁵ s^-1. We fabricated an organic light-emitting diode by employing the nonacene as an emitter, which exhibited high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 28.7%. The device also showed a minimum efficiency roll-off with an EQE of 25.8% at 1000 cd m^-2.

Transition-Metal-Catalyzed C-H Bond Activation for the Formation of C-C Bonds in Complex Molecules

Site-predictable and chemoselective C-H bond functionalization reactions offer synthetically powerful strategies for the step-economic diversification of both feedstock and fine chemicals. Many transition-metal-catalyzed methods have emerged for the selective activation and functionalization of C-H bonds. However, challenges of regio- and chemoselectivity have emerged with application to highly complex molecules bearing significant functional group density and diversity. As molecular complexity increases within molecular structures the risks of catalyst intolerance and limited applicability grow with the number of functional groups and potentially Lewis basic heteroatoms. Given the abundance of C-H bonds within highly complex and already diversified molecules such as pharmaceuticals, natural products, and materials, design and selection of reaction conditions and tolerant catalysts has proved critical for successful direct functionalization. As such, innovations within transition-metal-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization for the direct formation of carbon-carbon bonds have been discovered and developed to overcome these challenges and limitations. This review highlights progress made for the direct metal-catalyzed C-C bond forming reactions including alkylation, methylation, arylation, and olefination of C-H bonds within complex targets.

Dual-Ligand Catalyst for the Nondirected C-H Olefination of Heteroarenes

Pd(II)-catalyzed nondirected C-H functionalization of heteroarenes is a significant challenge for the following reasons: poor reactivity of electron-deficient heterocycles and the unproductive coordination of Lewis basic nitrogen atoms. Existing methodologies using palladium catalysis often employ a large excess of heterocycle substrates to overcome these hurdles. Despite recent advances in nondirected functionalization of arenes that allow them to be used as limiting reagents, the reaction conditions are incompatible with electron-deficient heteroarenes. Herein we report a dual-ligand catalyst that enables Pd(II)-catalyzed nondirected C-H olefination of heteroarenes without using a large excess of substrate. In general, the use of 1-2 equiv of substrates was sufficient to obtain synthetically useful yields. The reactivity was rationalized by the synergy between two types of ligands: a bidentate pyridine-pyridone ligand promotes C-H cleavage; the monodentate heterocycle substrate acts as a second ligand to form a cationic Pd(II) complex that has high affinity for arenes. The proposed dual-ligand cooperation is supported by a combination of X-ray, kinetics, and control experiments.

Amides as modifiable directing groups in electrophilic borylation

Amide directed C-H borylation using ≥two equiv. of BBr3 forms borenium cations containing a R2N(R')C[double bond, length as m-dash]O→B(Ar)Br unit which has significant Lewis acidity at the carbonyl carbon. This enables reduction of the amide unit to an amine using hydrosilanes. This approach can be applied sequentially in a one-pot electrophilic borylation-reduction process, which for phenyl-acetylamides generates ortho borylated compounds that can be directly oxidised to the 2-(2-aminoethyl)-phenol. Other substrates amenable to the C-H borylation-reduction sequence include mono and diamino-arenes and carbazoles. This represents a simple method to make borylated molecules that would be convoluted to access otherwise (e.g. N-octyl-1-BPin-carbazole). Substituent variation is tolerated at boron as well as in the amide unit, with diarylborenium cations also amenable to reduction. This enables a double C-H borylation-reduction-hydrolysis sequence to access B,N-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including an example where both the boron and nitrogen centres contain functionalisable handles (N-H and B-OH). This method is therefore a useful addition to the metal-free borylation toolbox for accessing useful intermediates (ArylBPin) and novel B,N-PAHs.

Simple Ether-Directed Enantioselective C(sp3 )-H Borylation of Cyclopropanes Enabled by Iridium Catalysis

Reported here is an efficient and simple ether-directed iridium-catalyzed enantioselective C(sp³ )-H borylation of cyclopropanes. Various functional groups were well-tolerated, affording a vast array of chiral cyclopropanes with high enantioselectivities. We also demonstrated that the turnover numbers of the current reaction could be up to 335.

Arene C-H borylation strategy enabled by a non-classical boron cluster-based electrophile

Introducing a tri-coordinate boron-based functional group (e.g., boronic ester) into an unactivated C-H bond in the absence of directing groups is an ongoing challenge in synthetic chemistry. Despite previous developments in transition metal-catalyzed and -free approaches, C-H borylation of sterically hindered arenes remains a largely unsolved problem to date. Here, we report a synthetic strategy of a two-step, precious metal-free electrophilic C-H borylation of sterically hindered alkyl- and haloarenes to generate aryl boronic esters. The first step relies on electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) induced by cage-opening of Cs₂[closo-B₁₀H₁₀], forming a 6-Ar-nido-B₁₀H₁₃ product containing a B-C bond, followed by a cage deconstruction of arylated decaboranes promoted by diols. The combination of these two steps allows for the preparation of aryl boronic esters that are hardly accessible by current direct C-H borylation approaches. This reaction does not require any precious metals, highly-engineered ligands, pre-functionalized boron reagents, or inert conditions. In addition, the unique properties of a non-classical boron cluster electrophile intermediate, B₁₀H₁₃⁺, afford a regioselectivity with unique steric and electronic control without the undesirable side reactions.

Iodine-Catalyzed Borylation of Benzylic Alcohols

Direct borylation of benzylic alcohols has been achieved via an iodine-catalyzed process. This transition-metal-free borylation transformation is compatible with various functional groups and provides a practical and convenient method to access important and useful benzylic boronate esters from widely available benzylic alcohols. Preliminary mechanistic investigations indicated that benzylic iodide and radicals are involved as the key intermediates in this borylation reaction.

DFT mechanistic studies of boron-silicon exchange reactions between silyl-substituted arenes and boron bromides

C-B bond forming reactions are important methodologies in modern synthetic chemistry, since many borylated organic substrates, ranging from alkanes and alkenes to arenes and heteroarenes, are useful intermediates for the synthesis of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and organic π-conjugated materials. Among numerous borylation methods, C-Si/B-Br exchange reactions have attracted increasing attention in recent years. While experimental exploration has been continually carried out for more than two decades, mechanistic insights into this type of reaction have not yet been clearly established. To address this deficiency of knowledge, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to map out the reaction pathways for a range of boron-silicon exchange reactions between boron tribromide (BBr₃) and trimethylsilyl-substituted arenes (TMSAr). Our computational analyses have disclosed the energetic, structural, and electronic properties for key stationary points on the potential energy surfaces (PES) in both the gas and solution (CH₂Cl₂) phases.

Transition Metal-Free Aromatic C-H, C-N, C-S and C-O Borylation

Aromatic organoboron compounds are highly valuable building blocks in organic chemistry. They were mainly synthesized through aromatic C-H and C-Het borylation, in which transition metal-catalysis dominate. In the past decade, with increasing attention to sustainable chemistry, numerous transition metal-free C-H and C-Het borylation transformations have been developed and emerged as efficient methods towards the synthesis of aromatic organoboron compounds. This account mainly focuses on recent advances in transition metal-free aromatic C-H, C-N, C-S, and C-O borylation transformations and provides insights to where further developments are required.

Site- and Stereoselective C(sp3 )-H Borylation of Strained (Hetero)Cycloalkanols Enabled by Iridium Catalysis

Transition metal-catalyzed site- and stereoselective C-H activation of strained (hetero)cycloalkanes remains a formidable challenge. We herein report a carbamate-directed iridium-catalyzed asymmetric β-C(sp³ )-H borylation of cyclopropanol derivatives. A variety of densely functionalized cyclopropanols were obtained in good enantioselectivities via desymmetrization and kinetic resolution. In addition, site-selective C(sp³ )-H borylation of methine groups furnished α-borylated (hetero)cycloalkanols in moderate to good yields. The synthetic utility of the method was further shown in a gram-scale synthesis and diverse downstream transformations of borylated products.
