Effects of Relative Humidity and Phase on the Molecular Detection of Nascent Sea Spray Aerosol Using Extractive Electrospray Ionization

Online mass spectrometry techniques, such as extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (EESI-MS), present an attractive alternative for analyzing aerosol molecular composition due to reduced aerosol sample collection and handling times and improved time resolution. Recent studies show a dependence of EESI-MS sensitivity on particle size and mixing state. This study measured authentic sea spray aerosol (SSA) components generated during a phytoplankton bloom, specifically glycerol, palmitic acid, and potassium ions. We demonstrate temporal variability and trends dependent on specific biological processes occurring in seawater. We found that the EESI-MS sensitivity, after adjusting for pressure variations at the inlet and normalizing to the reagent ion, critically depends on the sample's relative humidity. Relevant SSA species exhibited heightened sensitivity at an elevated relative humidity near the deliquescence relative humidity of sea salt and poorer sensitivity with sparse detection below the efflorescence relative humidity. Modeling the reagent ion's diffusive depth demonstrates that the sample aerosol particle viscosity governs the relative humidity dependence because it modulates the particle's coagulation efficiency and distance the reagent ion diffuses and reacts with components in the particle bulk. The effects of particle size and mixing state are discussed, revealing improved sensitivity of phase-separated components present along the particle surface. This work highlights the importance of the particle phase state in detecting and quantifying molecular components within authentic and complex aerosol particles and the utility of EESI-MS for measuring SSA composition.

Distinguishing Mechanisms for Reactive Uptake at Liquid Surfaces via Angular Distributions of Inelastically Scattered Molecules

Angular distributions of OH inelastically scattered from the surfaces of the reactive hydrocarbon liquids squalane (fully saturated) and squalene (partially unsaturated) have been measured. A pulsed, rotationally cold molecular beam (Ei = 35 kJ mol-1) of OH was scattered from refreshed liquid surfaces in a vacuum. Spatially and temporally resolved OH number densities were measured by pulsed, planar laser-induced fluorescence. Results are compared with those for the inert liquid perfluoropolyether. The clearly asymmetric distributions for 45° incidence add to the weight of evidence for predominantly impulsive scattering from all three liquids. However, we propose that significant differences in their shapes may be diagnostic of contrasting reaction mechanisms. Direct, near-specular trajectories survive preferentially on squalene, consistent with an addition mechanism removing those at more backward angles. This trend is reversed for squalane, as expected for direct abstraction. The results reinforce the need to consider the effects of composition-dependent contributions from different reaction mechanisms in the modeling of OH-aging of atmospheric aerosol particles.

Enhanced HONO Formation from Aqueous Nitrate Photochemistry in the Presence of Marine Relevant Organics: Impact of Marine-Dissolved Organic Matter (m-DOM) Concentration on HONO Yields and Potential Synergistic Effects of Compounds within m-DOM

Nitrous acid (HONO) is a key molecule in the reactive nitrogen cycle. However, sources and sinks for HONO are not fully understood. Particulate nitrate photochemistry has been suggested to play a role in the formation of HONO in the marine boundary layer (MBL). Here we investigate the impact of marine relevant organic compounds on HONO formation from aqueous nitrate photochemistry. In particular, steady-state, gas-phase HONO yields were measured from irradiated nitrate solutions at low pH containing marine-dissolved organic matter (m-DOM). m-DOM induces a nonlinear increase in HONO yield across all concentrations compared to that for pure nitrate solutions, with rates of HONO formation increasing by up to 3-fold when m-DOM is present. Furthermore, to understand the potential synergistic effects that may occur within complex samples such as m-DOM, mixtures of chromophoric (light-absorbing) and aliphatic (non-light-absorbing) molecular proxies were utilized. In particular, mixtures of 4-benzoylbenzoic acid (4-BBA) and ethylene glycol (EG) in acidic aqueous solutions containing nitrate showed more HONO upon irradiation compared to solutions containing only one of the molecular proxies. This suggests that synergistic effects in the HONO formation can occur in complex organic samples. Atmospheric implications of the results presented here are discussed.

The toxic effects of petroleum pollutants to microalgae in marine environment

Marine oil pollution is one of the major global environmental pollution problems. Marine microalgae are the foundation of the marine food chain, providing the main primary productivity of the ocean. They not only maintain the energy flow and material cycle of the entire marine ecosystem, but also play an important role in regulating global climate change. Exploring the impact of petroleum pollutants on marine microalgae is extremely important for studying marine environmental pollution. This review first introduced the sources, compositions, and forms of petroleum pollutants and their migration and transformation processes in the ocean. Then, the toxic effects of petroleum pollutants on marine microalgae were summarized. The growth of marine microalgae showed low-concentration promotion and high-concentration inhibition. The population growth and interspecific relationships of marine microalga was changed and the photosynthesis of marine microalgae was influenced. Finally, potential research directions and suggestions for marine microalgae in the future were proposed.

Micro- and nanoplastics transfer from seawater to the atmosphere through aerosolization under controlled laboratory conditions

Sea spray has been suggested to enable the transfer of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) from the ocean to the atmosphere, but only a few studies support the role of sea spray aerosols (SSAs) as a source of airborne particles. We demonstrated that MNPs are aerosolized during wave action, via SSAs, under controlled laboratory conditions. We used a mini-Marine-Aerosol-Reference-Tank (miniMART), a device that mimics naturally occurring physical mechanisms producing SSAs, and assessed the aerosolization of fluorescent polystyrene beads (0.5-10 μm), in artificial seawater. The SSAs contained up to 18,809 particles/mL of aerosols for 0.5 μm beads, with an enrichment factor of 19-fold, and 1977 particles/mL of aerosols for 10 μm beads with a 2-fold enrichment factor. Our study demonstrates that the use of the miniMART is essential to assess MNPs aerosolization in a standardized way, supporting the hypothesis which states that MNPs in the surface of the ocean may be transferred to the atmosphere.

Vapors Are Lost to Walls, Not to Particles on the Wall: Artifact-Corrected Parameters from Chamber Experiments and Implications for Global Secondary Organic Aerosol

Atmospheric models of secondary organic aerosol (OA) (SOA) typically rely on parameters derived from environmental chambers. Chambers are subject to experimental artifacts, including losses of (1) particles to the walls (PWL), (2) vapors to the particles on the wall (V2PWL), and (3) vapors to the wall directly (VWL). We present a method for deriving artifact-corrected SOA parameters and translating these to volatility basis set (VBS) parameters for use in chemical transport models (CTMs). Our process involves combining a box model that accounts for chamber artifacts (Statistical Oxidation Model with a TwO-Moment Aerosol Sectional model (SOM-TOMAS)) with a pseudo-atmospheric simulation to develop VBS parameters that are fit across a range of OA mass concentrations. We found that VWL led to the highest percentage change in chamber SOA mass yields (high NO_x: 36-680%; low NO_x: 55-250%), followed by PWL (high NO_x: 8-39%; low NO_x: 10-37%), while the effects of V2PWL are negligible. In contrast to earlier work that assumed that V2PWL was a meaningful loss pathway, we show that V2PWL is an unimportant SOA loss pathway and can be ignored when analyzing chamber data. Using our updated VBS parameters, we found that not accounting for VWL may lead surface-level OA to be underestimated by 24% (0.25 μg m^-3) as a global average or up to 130% (9.0 μg m^-3) in regions of high biogenic or anthropogenic activity. Finally, we found that accurately accounting for PWL and VWL improves model-measurement agreement for fine mode aerosol mass concentrations (PM_2.5) in the GEOS-Chem model.

Anthropogenic and Biogenic Contributions to the Organic Composition of Coastal Submicron Sea Spray Aerosol

The organic composition of coastal sea spray aerosol is important for both atmospheric chemistry and public health but remains poorly characterized. Coastal waters contain an organic material derived from both anthropogenic processes, such as wastewater discharge, and biological processes, including biological blooms. Here, we probe the chemical composition of the organic fraction of sea spray aerosol over the course of the 2019 SeaSCAPE mesocosm experiment, in which a phytoplankton bloom was facilitated in natural coastal water from La Jolla, California. We apply untargeted two-dimensional gas chromatography to characterize submicron nascent sea spray aerosol samples, reporting ∼750 unique organic species traced over a 19 day phytoplankton bloom experiment. Categorization and quantitative compositional analysis reveal three major findings. First, anthropogenic species made up 30% of total submicron nascent sea spray aerosol organic mass under the pre-bloom condition. Second, biological activity drove large changes within the aerosolized carbon pool, decreasing the anthropogenic mass fraction by 89% and increasing the biogenic and biologically transformed fraction by a factor of 5.6. Third, biogenic marine organics are underrepresented in mass spectral databases in comparison to marine organic pollutants, with more than twice as much biogenic aerosol mass attributable to unlisted compounds.

Effects of Atmospheric Aging Processes on Nascent Sea Spray Aerosol Physicochemical Properties

The effects of atmospheric aging on single-particle nascent sea spray aerosol (nSSA) physicochemical properties, such as morphology, composition, phase state, and water uptake, are important to understanding their impacts on the Earth's climate. The present study investigates these properties by focusing on the aged SSA (size range of 0.1-0.6 μm) and comparing with a similar size range nSSA, both generated at a peak of a phytoplankton bloom during a mesocosm study. The aged SSAs were generated by exposing nSSA to OH radicals with exposures equivalent to 4-5 days of atmospheric aging. Complementary filter-based thermal optical analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and AFM photothermal infrared spectroscopy were utilized. Both nSSA and aged SSA showed an increase in the organic mass fraction with decreasing particle sizes. In addition, aging results in a further increase of the organic mass fraction, which can be attributed to new particle formation and oxidation of volatile organic compounds followed by condensation on pre-existing particles. The results are consistent with single-particle measurements that showed a relative increase in the abundance of aged SSA core-shells with significantly higher organic coating thickness, relative to nSSA. Increased hygroscopicity was observed for aged SSA core-shells, which had more oxygenated organic species. Rounded nSSA and aged SSA had similar hygroscopicity and no apparent changes in the composition. The observed changes in aged SSA physicochemical properties showed a significant size-dependence and particle-to-particle variability. Overall, results showed that the atmospheric aging can significantly influence the nSSA physicochemical properties, thus altering the SSA effects on the climate.

Isotopic Insights into Organic Composition Differences between Supermicron and Submicron Sea Spray Aerosol

To elucidate the seawater biological and physicochemical factors driving differences in organic composition between supermicron and submicron sea spray aerosol (SSA_super and SSA_sub), carbon isotopic composition (δ¹³C) measurements were performed on size-segregated, nascent SSA collected during a phytoplankton bloom mesocosm experiment. The δ¹³C measurements indicate that SSA_super contains a mixture of particulate and dissolved organic material in the bulk seawater. After phytoplankton growth, a greater amount of freshly produced carbon was observed in SSA_super with the proportional contribution being modulated by bacterial activity, emphasizing the importance of the microbial loop in controlling the organic composition of SSA_super. Conversely, SSA_sub exhibited no apparent relationship with biological activity but tracked closely with surface tension measurements probing the topmost ∼0.2-1.5 μm of the sea surface microlayer. This probing depth is similar to a bubble's film thickness at the ocean surface, suggesting that SSA_sub organic composition may be influenced by the presence of surfactants at the air-sea interface that are transferred into SSA_sub by bubble bursting. Our findings illustrate the substantial impact of seawater dynamics on the pronounced organic compositional differences between SSA_super and SSA_sub and demonstrate that these two SSA populations should be considered separately when assessing their contribution to marine aerosols and climate.
