Abstract
This study investigated the protective effect of dulcitol on LPS-induced intestinal injury in piglets and explored the underlying molecular mechanisms. A total of 108 piglets were divided into three groups: CON, LPS, and DUL. The CON and LPS groups were fed a basal diet, the DUL group was fed a diet supplementation with 500 mg/kg dulcitol. On day 29, 6 piglets in the LPS and DUL groups were injected with 100 μg/kg BW of LPS. At 4 h postchallenge, all pigs were slaughtered, and colonic samples were collected. Results showed that dulcitol supplementation boosted intestinal barrier function in LPS-challenged piglets by enhancing intestinal morphology and integrity, and increasing the gene expression of zonula occludens-1, claudin-1, and occludin in the colonic mucosa (P <0.05). Metabolomics showed DUL supplementation mainly increased (P <0.05) the metabolites related to steroid and vitamin metabolism (Cholesterol and Vitamin C). Proteomics showed that dulcitol supplementation altered the protein expression involved in maintaining barrier integrity (FN1, CADM1, and PARD3), inhibiting inflammatory response (SLP1, SFN, and IRF3), and apoptosis (including FAS, ING1, BTK, MTHFR, NOX, and P53BP2) in LPS-challenged piglets (P <0.05). Additionally, dulcitol addition also suppressed the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway and apoptosis in mRNA and protein levels. Dulcitol increased the abundance of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria (Lactobacillus, Blautia, and Faecalibacterium) at the genus level, but decreased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria at the phylum level and Pseudomonas and Delftia at the genus level in piglets (P<.05). In conclusion, these results suggested that the addition of dulcitol alleviated LPS-induced intestinal barrier injury in piglets, probably by maintaining its integrity, inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathways and apoptosis, and modulating the gut microbiota. Therefore, dulcitol can be considered a potential dietary additive for improving intestinal health in pig models.

Abstract
This study was conducted to develop a W/O/W emulsion encapsulated Lactobacillus plantarum 23-1 (LP23-1) to significantly enhance the survival rate of LP23-1 under simulated digestion and storage conditions. The zein particles and pectin formed a complex through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. When the proportion of zein particles to pectin was 1:1, the emulsifying stability index (ESI) was 304.17 %. Additionally, when the proportion of the internal aqueous phase to the oil phase was 1:9, the polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) concentration was 5 %, the proportion of primary emulsion to the external aqueous phase was 5:5, the zein particles concentration was 4 %, and the proportion of zein particles to pectin was 1:1, the encapsulation rate was the highest at 96.27 %. Cryo-scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy confirmed the morphology of W/O/W emulsion and successful encapsulation of LP23-1. Furthermore, compared with free LP23-1, the W/O/W emulsion encapsulation significantly improved the survival rate of LP23-1 to 73.36 % after simulated gastrointestinal digestion and maintained a high survival rate of 78.42 % during the 35-day storage. The W/O/W emulsion was found to effectively improve the survival rate of LP23-1 during simulated digestion and storage, which has implications for the development of probiotic functional foods with elevated survival rates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary kelp possesses a variety of useful biological qualities but does not have a toxic effect on the host. In this study, we examine how kelp dietary supplementation enhances the serum biochemistry, intestinal immunity, and metabolism of hybrid snakehead. A total of 810 juvenile hybrid snakeheads (Channa maculata ♀ × Channa argus ♂), with an initial average weight of 11.4 ± 0.15 g, were allocated randomly to three treatment groups (three replicates per group). The fish were fed for 60 days with isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets. The groups were the control group (C) (20% high-gluten flour), the medium replacement group (MR) (10% high-gluten flour and 10% kelp meal), and the full replacement group (FR) (0% high-gluten flour and 15% kelp meal). RESULTS The results showed that dietary kelp increased the activity of serum antioxidant enzymes significantly and decreased the content of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) in hybrid snakeheads, with significant changes in the FR group (P < 0.05). The intestinal morphology results showed that dietary kelp helped to increase the specific surface area of intestinal villi, which was beneficial for intestinal digestion and absorption. According to transcriptome and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis, dietary kelp can improve the expression of intestinal immunity and metabolism-related pathways. Among them, immune-related genes MHC1 and HSPA1 were significantly up-regulated, and IGH, MHC2, and IL-8 were significantly down-regulated (P < 0.05). Lipid metabolism-related genes DGAT2, FABP2, RXRα, and PLPP1 were all significantly up-regulated (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Dietary kelp can effectively improve the antioxidant function of hybrid snakeheads, improve intestinal morphology, reduce intestinal inflammation, and promote intestinal lipid synthesis and transportation, thereby improving intestinal immunity and metabolic functions. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The strong connection between gut microbes and human health has been confirmed by an increasing number of studies. Although probiotics have been found to relieve ulcerative colitis, the mechanism varies by the species involved. In this study, the physiological, immune and pathological factors of mice were measured and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was conducted to investigate the potential mechanisms in preventing ulcerative colitis. RESULTS The results demonstrated that ingestion of Lactobacillus fermentum GLF-217 and Lactobacillus plantarum FLP-215 significantly alleviated ulcerative colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), as evidenced by the increase in body weight, food intake, water intake and colon length as well as the decrease in disease activity index, histopathological score and inflammatory factor. Both strains not only improved intestinal mucosa by increasing mucin-2 and zonula occludens-1, but also improved the immune system response by elevating interleukin-10 levels and decreasing the levels of interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α and interferon-γ. Moreover, L. fermentum GLF-217 and L. plantarum FLP-215 play a role in preventing DSS-induced colitis by regulating the structure of gut microbiota and promoting the formation of short-chain fatty acids. CONCLUSIONS This study may provide a reference for the prevention strategy of ulcerative colitis. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) serves as an essential cofactor in all organisms, yet excessive Cu exposure is widely recognized for its role in inducing liver inflammation. However, the precise mechanism by which Cu triggers liver inflammation in ducks, particularly in relation to the interplay in gut microbiota regulation, has remained elusive. In this investigation, we sought to elucidate the impact of Cu exposure on liver inflammation through gut-liver axis in ducks. Our findings revealed that Cu exposure markedly elevated liver AST and ALT levels and induced liver inflammation through upregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) and triggering the LPS/TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. Simultaneously, Cu exposure induced alterations in the composition of intestinal flora communities, notably increasing the relative abundance of Sphingobacterium, Campylobacter, Acinetobacter and reducing the relative abundance of Lactobacillus. Cu exposure significantly decreased the protein expression related to intestinal barrier (Occludin, Claudin-1 and ZO-1) and promoted the secretion of intestinal pro-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, correlation analysis was observed that intestinal microbiome and gut barrier induced by Cu were closely related to liver inflammation. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiments further demonstrated the microbiota-depleted ducks transplanting fecal samples from Cu-exposed ducks disturbed the intestinal dysfunction, which lead to impaire liver function and activate the liver inflammation. Our study provided insights into the mechanism by which Cu exposure induced liver inflammation in ducks through the regulation of gut-liver axis. These results enhanced our comprehension of the potential mechanisms driving Cu-induced hepatotoxicity in avian species.

Abstract
Zebrafish (Danio rerio) has ascended as a pivotal model organism in the realm of gut-brain axis research, principally owing to its high-throughput experimental capabilities and evolutionary alignment with mammals. The inherent transparency of zebrafish embryos facilitates unprecedented real-time imaging, affording unparalleled insights into the intricate dynamics of bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain. Noteworthy are the structural and functional parallels shared between the zebrafish and mammalian gut-brain axis components, rendering zebrafish an invaluable model for probing the molecular and cellular intricacies inherent in this critical physiological interaction. Recent investigations in zebrafish have systematically explored the impact of gut microbiota on neurodevelopment, behaviour, and disease susceptibility, underscoring the model's prowess in unravelling the multifaceted influence of microbial communities in shaping gut-brain interactions. Abstract
T2D and its complications are significant threats to human health and are among the most concerning metabolic diseases worldwide. Previous studies have revealed that Glycyrrhiza uralensis polysaccharide extract (GUP) exhibits remarkable antioxidant capabilities and inhibits alpha-glucosidase activity. However, whether GUP improves glycemic control in T2D is unknown. This study aims to investigate the effects of GUP on glucose and lipid metabolism as well as the intestinal microbiota in HFD/STZ-induced T2D. The results demonstrated that GUP could significantly ameliorate hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and reduce liver lipid levels in T2D mice. Furthermore, it also enhanced the integrity of the intestinal barrier in T2D mice by reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and serum LPS levels. Interestingly, GUP treatment significantly lowered serum creatinine and urea nitrogen levels, mitigating renal function deterioration and interstitial fibrosis. Additionally, GUP intervention increased the α diversity of gut microbiota, promoting beneficial species like Akkermansia, Lactobacillus, Romboutsia and Faecalibaculum, while decreasing harmful ones such as Bacteroides, Escherichia-Shigella, and Clostridium sensu stricto 1 in T2D mice. Overall, this study highlights the potential of GUP in alleviating complications and enhancing intestinal health in T2D mice, providing valuable insights into dietary strategies for diabetes control and overall health improvement.

Abstract
Lactobacillus is a probiotic with therapeutic potential for several diseases, including liver disease. However, the therapeutic effect of L. plantarum against nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and its underlying mechanisms remain unelucidated. Therefore, we delineated the L. plantarum-mediated NASH regulation in a mouse model to understand its therapeutic effect. We used a choline-deficient high-fat diet (CD-HFD)-induced murine model that recapitulated the critical features of human metabolic syndrome and investigated the effect of L. plantarum on NASH pathogenesis using transcriptomic, metagenomic, and immunohistochemistry analyses. Validation experiments were performed using liver organoids and a murine model fed a methionine-choline-deficient (MCD) diet. L. plantarum treatment in mice significantly decreased liver inflammation and improved metabolic phenotypes, such as insulin tolerance and the hepatic lipid content, compared with those in the vehicle group. RNA-sequencing analysis revealed that L. plantarum treatment significantly downregulated inflammation-related pathways. Shotgun metagenomic analysis revealed that L-arginine biosynthesis-related microbial genes were significantly upregulated in the L. plantarum group. We also confirmed the elevated arginine levels in the serum of the L. plantarum group. We further used liver organoids and mice fed an MCD diet to demonstrate that L-arginine alone was sufficient to alleviate liver inflammation. Our data revealed a novel and counterintuitive therapeutic effect of L. plantarum on alleviating NASH-related liver inflammation by increasing circulating L-arginine.

Abstract
Accumulating evidences strongly support the correlations between the compositions of gut microbiome and therapeutic effects on Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Notably, gut microbes such as Akkermansia muciniphila are found able to regulate microecological balance and alleviate dysmetabolism of mice bearing T2D. In order to search out similarly functional bacteria, bacteriophage MS2 with a good specificity to bacteria carrying fertility (F) factor were used to treat T2D mice. Based on multi-omics analysis of microbiome and global metabolism of mice, we observed that gavage of bacteriophage MS2 and metformin led to a significant increase in the abundance of Corynebacterium glutamicum and A. muciniphila, respectively. Consequently, the gut microbiota were remodeled, leading to variations in metabolites and a substantial increase in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). In which, the amount of acetate, propionate, and butyrate presented negative correlations to that of proinflammatory cytokines, which was beneficial to repairing the intestinal barriers and improving their functions. Moreover, main short fatty acid (SCFA) producers exhibited positive interactions, further facilitating the restoration of gut eubiosis. These findings revealed that C. glutamicum and its metabolites may be potential dietary supplements for the treatment of T2D. Moreover, our research contributes to a novel understanding of the underlying mechanism by which functional foods exert their anti-diabetic effects.

Abstract
Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) contamination is a worldwide environmental problem that poses a grave threat to the water ecosystem and public health. Exposure to MC-LR has been associated with the development of intestinal injury, but there are no effective treatments for MC-LR-induced intestinal disease. Probiotics are "live microorganisms that are beneficial to the health of the host when administered in sufficient quantities". It has been demonstrated that probiotics can prevent or treat a variety of human diseases; however, their ability to mitigate MC-LR-induced intestinal harm has not yet been investigated. The objective of this study was to determine whether probiotics can mitigate MC-LR-induced intestinal toxicity and its underlying mechanisms. We first evaluated the pathological changes in colorectal tissues using an animal model with sub-chronic exposure to low-dose MC-LR, HE staining to assess colorectal histopathologic changes, qPCR to detect the expression levels of inflammatory factors in colorectal tissues, and WB to detect the alterations on CSF1R signaling pathway proteins in colorectal tissues. Microbial sequencing analysis and screening of fecal microorganisms differential to MC-LR treatment in mice. To investigate the role of microorganisms in MC-LR-induced colorectal injury, an in vitro model of MC-LR co-treatment with microorganisms was developed. Our findings demonstrated that MC-LR treatment induced an inflammatory response in mouse colorectal tissues, promoted the expression of inflammatory factors, activated the CSF1R signaling pathway, and significantly decreased the abundance of Lactobacillus. In a model of co-treatment with MC-LR and Lactobacillus fermentum (L. fermentum), it was discovered that L. fermentum substantially reduced the incidence of the colorectal inflammatory response induced by MC-LR and inhibited the protein expression of the CSF1R signaling pathway. This is the first study to suggest that L. fermentum inhibits the CSF1R signaling pathway to reduce the incidence of MC-LR-induced colorectal inflammation. This research may provide an excellent experimental foundation for the development of strategies for the prevention and treatment of intestinal diseases in MC-LR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is closely associated with lipid accumulation and intestinal microbiota dysbiosis. It has been proved that probiotics supplement contributes to alleviate obesity. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism by which Lactobacillus plantarum HF02 (LP-HF02) alleviated lipid accumulation and intestinal microbiota dysbiosis in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. RESULTS Our results showed that LP-HF02 ameliorated body weight, dyslipidemia, liver lipid accumulation, and liver injury in obese mice. As expected, LP-HF02 inhibited pancreatic lipase activity in small intestinal contents and increased fecal triglyceride levels, thereby reducing dietary fat hydrolysis and absorption. Moreover, LP-HF02 ameliorated the intestinal microbiota composition, as evidenced by the enhanced ratio of Bacteroides to Firmicutes, the decreased abundance of pathogenic bacteria (including Bacteroides, Alistipes, Blautia, and Colidextribacter) and the increased abundance of beneficial bacteria (including Muribaculaceae, Akkermansia, Faecalibaculum, and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group). LP-HF02 also increased fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) levels and colonic mucosal thickness, and subsequently decreased serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels in obese mice. Additionally, reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blot results demonstrated that LP-HF02 ameliorated hepatic lipid accumulation via activating the adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway. CONCLUSION Therefore, our results indicated that LP-HF02 could be considered as a probiotic preparation for preventing obesity. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
This study aims to systematically evaluate the safety of a novel L. plantarum LPJZ-658 explored on whole-genome sequence analysis, safety, and probiotic properties assessment. Whole genome sequencing results demonstrated that L. plantarum LPJZ-658 consists of 3.26 Mbp with a GC content of 44.83%. A total of 3254 putative ORFs were identified. Of note, a putative bile saline hydrolase (BSH) (identity 70.4%) was found in its genome. In addition, the secondary metabolites were analyzed, and one secondary metabolite gene cluster was predicted to consist of 51 genes, which verified its safety and probiotic properties at the genome level. Additionally, L. plantarum LPJZ-658 exhibited non-toxic and non-hemolytic activity and was susceptible to various tested antibiotics, indicating that L. plantarum LPJZ-658 was safe for consumption. Moreover, the probiotic properties tests confirm that L. plantarum LPJZ-658 also exhibits tolerance to acid and bile salts, preferably hydrophobicity and auto-aggregation, and excellent antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative gastrointestinal pathogens. In conclusion, this study confirmed the safety and probiotic properties of L. plantarum LPJZ-658, suggesting it can be used as a potential probiotic candidate for human and animal applications.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of oral administration with L. plantarum CAM6 on the hematological profile, relative weight of digestive organs, and cecal traits in growing pigs. A total of 36 castrated male pigs [(Landrace × Pietrain) × Duroc] aged 49 to 139 days old were randomly assigned to 3 experimental groups with 12 animals per treatment. The treatments included a control diet without additives (CTRL), a positive control with subtherapeutic antibiotics (TRT1), and CTRL supplemented with 5 mL Lactobacillus plantarum CAM6 preparation providing 109 CFU/pig/day (TRT2). The TRT2 group showed a higher (p ≤ 0.05) small intestine length and the cecum relative weight compared to the CTRL group. Moreover, L. plantarum CAM6 supplementation promoted (p ≤ 0.05) increased thickness of the muscular and mucosal layers, as well as enhanced depth and width of the cecal crypts. The TRT2 group also showed well-defined crypts without lesions, while the CTRL and TRT1 groups exhibited congestion, lymphocytic infiltration in the crypt, and intestinal-associated lymphoid tissue atrophy, respectively. Additionally, TRT2 stimulated (p ≤ 0.05) the growth of the autochthonous cecal microbiota compared to other experimental groups. Overall, the results indicate that oral administration of L. plantarum CAM6 improved intestinal health and enhanced the growth of autochthonous cecal lactic acid bacteria and had no impact on the complete blood count in growing pigs.

Abstract
Dietary patterns are promising strategies for preventing and treating obesity and its coexisting inflammatory processes. Bioactive food compounds have received considerable attention due to their actions against obesity-induced inflammation, with limited harmful side effects. They are perceived as food ingredients or dietary supplements other than those necessary to meet basic human nutritional needs and are responsible for positive changes in the state of health. These include polyphenols, unsaturated fatty acids, and probiotics. Although the exact mechanisms of bioactive food compounds' action are still poorly understood, studies have indicated that they involve the modulation of the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, adipokines, and hormones; regulate gene expression in adipose tissue; and modify the signaling pathways responsible for the inflammatory response. Targeting the consumption and/or supplementation of foods with anti-inflammatory potential may represent a new approach to obesity-induced inflammation treatment. Nevertheless, more studies are needed to evaluate strategies for bioactive food compound intake, especially times and doses. Moreover, worldwide education about the advantages of bioactive food compound consumption is warranted to limit the consequences of unhealthy dietary patterns. This work presents a review and synthesis of recent data on the preventive mechanisms of bioactive food compounds in the context of obesity-induced inflammation.

Abstract
Bacterial translocation is a pathological process involving migration of pathogenic bacteria across the intestinal barrier to enter the systemic circulation and gain access to distant organs. This phenomenon has been linked to a diverse range of diseases including inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and cancer. The intestinal barrier is an innate structure that maintains intestinal homeostasis. Pathogenic infections and dysbiosis can disrupt the integrity of the intestinal barrier, increasing its permeability, and thereby facilitating pathogen translocation. As translocation represents an essential step in pathogenesis, a clear understanding of how barrier integrity is disrupted and how this disruption facilitates bacterial translocation could identify new routes to effective prophylaxis and therapy. In this comprehensive review, we provide an in-depth analysis of bacterial translocation and intestinal barrier function. We discuss currently understood mechanisms of bacterial-enterocyte interactions, with a focus on tight junctions and endocytosis. We also discuss the emerging concept of bidirectional communication between the intestinal microbiota and other body systems. The intestinal tract has established 'axes' with various organs. Among our regulatory systems, the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems have been shown to play pivotal roles in barrier regulation. A mechanistic understanding of intestinal barrier regulation is crucial for the development of personalized management strategies for patients with bacterial translocation-related disorders. Advancing our knowledge of barrier regulation will pave the way for future research in this field and novel clinical intervention strategies.

Abstract
Saponins, consisting of sapogenins as their aglycones and carbohydrate chains, are widely found in plants and some marine organisms. Due to the complexity of the structure of saponins, involving different types of sapogenins and sugar moieties, investigation of their absorption and metabolism is limited, which further hinders the explanation of their bioactivities. Large molecular weight and complex structures limit the direct absorption of saponins rendering their low bioavailability. As such, their major modes of action may be due to interaction with the gastrointestinal environment, such as enzymes and nutrients, and interaction with the gut microbiota. Many studies have reported the interaction between saponins and gut microbiota, that is, the effects of saponins on changing the composition of gut microbiota, and gut microbiota playing an indispensable role in the biotransformation of saponins into sapogenins. However, the metabolic routes of saponins by gut microbiota and their mutual interactions are still sparse. Thus, this review summarizes the chemistry, absorption, and metabolic pathways of saponins, as well as their interactions with gut microbiota and impacts on gut health, to better understand how saponins exert their health-promoting functions.

Abstract
Excessive drinking has been listed by the World Health Organization as the fifth major risk factor; especially the liver, as the core organ of alcohol metabolism, is prone to organic lesions. Probiotics have received attention due to their bioactivity for liver protection. The beneficial effects of probiotics on hosts are related to their physiological functions. Therefore, based on the concept of second-generation synbiotes, this study explored the protective effects of four dietary polyphenols on the stress tolerance, hydrophobicity, adhesion, and digestive characteristics of L. rhamnosus 1.0320. L. rhamnosus 1.0320 had the best synergistic effect with dihydromyricetin (DMY). Therefore, this combination was selected as a synbiotic supplement to explore the protective effect on acute alcohol exposure-induced hepatic impairment. The results showed that L. rhamnosus 1.0320 combined with DMY restored the intestinal barrier by upregulating short-chain fatty acid levels and activated the adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase-mediated lipid metabolism pathway to inhibit oxidative stress, inflammation, and lipid accumulation in the liver. Furthermore, 109 CFU/mouse/d L. rhamnosus 1.0320 and 50 mg/kg/d DMY by gavage were identified as the optimal doses for protection against acute alcohol expose-induced hepatic impairment. This study provides new insights into alleviating acute alcoholic hepatic impairment by targeting intestinal metabolites through the gut-liver axis.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC. is a Chinese herb that has been commonly used to treat spleen-deficiency diarrhea (SDD) in China for over a thousand years. However, the underlying mechanism of its antidiarrheal activity is not fully understood. AIM OF THE STUDY The antidiarrheal effects of the ethanol extract of deep-fried A. lancea rhizome (EEDAR) due to spleen deficiency induced by folium sennae (SE) were determined on the regulation of the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabonomics induced by the intestinal flora. MATERIALS AND METHODS The effects of EEDAR on a SE-induced mouse model of SDD were evaluated by monitoring the animal weight, fecal water content, diarrhea-grade rating, goblet cell loss, and pathological changes in the colon. The expression of inflammatory factors (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, interleukin [IL]-1β, IL-6, IL-10), aquaporins (AQP3, AQP4, and AQP8), and tight junction markers (ZO-1, occludin, claudin-1) in colon tissues were determined using quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. SCFA metabonomics in the feces of mice treated with EEDAR was evaluated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Furthermore, 16S rDNA sequencing was used to determine the effect of EEDAR on the intestinal flora of SDD mice, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was used to confirm whether the intestinal flora was essential for the anti-SDD effect of EEDAR. RESULTS Treatment with EEDAR significantly improved the symptoms of mice with SDD by inhibiting the loss of colonic cup cells, alleviating colitis, and promoting the expression of AQPs and tight junction markers. More importantly, the effect of EEDAR on the increase of SCFA content in mice with SDD was closely related to the gut microbiota composition. EEDAR intervention did not significantly improve intestinal inflammation or the barrier of germ-free SDD mice, but FMT was effective. CONCLUSION EEDAR alleviated SE-induced SDD in mice, as well as the induced SCFA disorder by regulating the imbalance of the intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
(1) Background: In this study, the potential use of Dioscorea rotundata hydrocolloids was evaluated to develop low-fat mayonnaise. (2) Methods: The effect of different concentrations of hydrocolloids on the physicochemical, microstructural, and rheological properties of mayonnaise was evaluated. (3) Results: Physicochemical analyses showed pH values that were stable over time but decreased with increasing hydrocolloid concentration. The color parameters showed a decrease in luminosity and an increase in the values of a* and b* over time, which can be translated into an increase in yellow and a decrease in white, with a greater accentuation in the control sample. The rheological study allowed us to obtain a non-Newtonian flow behavior of the shear-thinning type for all samples, and the flow curves were well-fitted by the Sisko model (R2 ≥ 0.99). The samples had an elastic rather than viscous behavior, typical of dressings and emulsions. This indicates that the storage modulus was greater than the loss modulus (G′ > G″) in the evaluated frequency range. (4) Conclusions: hydrocolloids from Dioscorea rotundata have potential as a fat substitute in emulsion-type products.

Abstract
Oxidative stress and inflammation lead by dietary oxidised lipids, as oxysterols, have been linked to the loss of intestinal barrier integrity, a crucial event in the initiation and progression of intestinal disorders. In the last decade, probiotic lactobacilli have emerged as an interesting tool to improve intestinal health, thanks to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the ability of two commercial probiotic strains of lactobacilli (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v® (DMS 9843) and Lacticaseibacillus casei DG® (CNCMI-1572)), both as live bacteria and intracellular content, to attenuate the oxysterols-induced alteration of intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cell monolayer permeability. Our investigation was focused on the modulation of tight junctions (TJs) proteins, occludin, ZO-1 and JAM-A, in relation to redox-sensitive MAPK p38 activation. Obtained results provided evidence on the ability of the two probiotics to counteract the alteration of monolayer permeability and loss of TJs proteins, at least in part, through the modulation of p38 pathway. The protective action was exerted by live bacteria, whose adhesion to Caco-2 cells was not altered by oxysterols, and bacterial intracellular components equally able to interact with the signaling pathway.

Abstract
Polyphenols have received attention as dietary supplements for the relief of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) due to various bioactivities. Ethanol-induced rat small intestinal epithelial cell 6 (IEC-6) and alpha mouse liver 12 (AML-12) cell models were pretreated with four dietary polyphenols with different structures to explore their effects on cytotoxicity and potential protective mechanisms. The results showed that polyphenols had potential functions to inhibit ethanol-induced AML-12 and IEC-6 cell damage and oxidative stress, and restore ethanol-induced IEC-6 permeability and tight junction gene expression. Especially, dihydromyricetin (DMY) had the best protective effect on ethanol-induced cytotoxicity, followed by apigenin (API). Western blot results showed that DMY and API had the best ability to inhibit CYP2E1 and Keap1, and promote nuclear translocation of Nrf2, which might be the potential mechanism by which DMY and API attenuate ethanol-induced cytotoxicity. Moreover, the molecular docking results predicted that DMY and API could bind more tightly to the amino acid residues of CYP2E1 and Keap1, which might be one of the inhibitory modes of dietary polyphenols on CYP2E1 and Keap1. This study provided a rationale for the subsequent protective effect of dietary polyphenols on alcohol-induced liver injury in animal models and provided new clues on bioactive components for ALD-protection based on the gut-liver axis.

Abstract
In modern society, where new diseases and viruses are constantly emerging, drugs are still the most important means of resistance. However, adverse effects and diminished efficacy remain the leading cause of treatment failure and a major determinant of impaired health-related quality of life for patients. Clinical studies have shown that the disturbance of the gut microbial structure plays a crucial role in the toxic and side effects of drugs. It is well known that probiotics have the ability to maintain the balance of intestinal microecology, which implies their potential as an adjunct to prevent and alleviate the adverse reactions of drugs and to make medicines play a better role. In addition, in the past decade, probiotics have been found to have excellent prevention and alleviation effects in drug toxicity side effects, such as liver injury. In this review, we summarize the development history of probiotics, discuss the impact on drug side effects of probiotics, and propose the underlying mechanisms. Probiotics will be a new star in the world of complementary medicine.

Abstract
Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces boulardii are common probiotic supplements. Colonic subepithelial myofibroblasts (cSEMFs) are actively involved in mucosal wound healing and inflammation. cSEMFs, isolated from healthy individuals, were stimulated with 102 or 104 cfu/mL of these probiotic strains alone and in combination, and their effect on chemokine and wound healing factor expression was assessed by qRT-PCR, ELISA and Sircol Assay, and on cSEMFs migration, by Wound Healing Assay. These strains remained viable and altered cSEMFs’ inflammatory and wound healing behavior, depending on the strain and concentration. cSEMFs treated with a combination of the four probiotics had a moderate, but statistically significant, increase in the mRNA and/or protein expression of chemokines CXCL1, CXCL2, CXCL4, CXCL8, CXCL10, CCL2 and CCL5, and healing factors, collagen type I and III, fibronectin and tissue factor. In contrast, when each strain was administered alone, different effects were observed, with greater increase or decrease in chemokine and healing factor expression, which was balanced by the mixture. Overall, this study highlights that the use of multiple probiotic strains can potentially alert the gut mucosal immune system and promote wound healing, having a better effect on mucosal immunity than the use of single probiotics.

Abstract
Buckwheat has beneficial effects on human intestinal health, which is often compounded with wheat to make food. Therefore, the effect of cereals mixture via in vitro fermentation on gut microbes and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were investigated in this study. The mixture of wheat and tartary buckwheat (WT) produced more lactate and acetate, and the mixture of wheat and sweet buckwheat (WE) produced more propionate and butyrate. Compared with wheat (WA), the relative abundance of some beneficial bacteria significantly increased, such as Sutterella in WT and Faecalibacterium in WE. Cereals mixture also affected the expression of functional genes, involved in metabolic pathways and carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) that modulated SCFAs generation. This study provides new insights into the effects of sweet and tartary buckwheat on intestinal function, which is beneficial to applying both types of buckwheat in practical.

Abstract
Effects of ball milling (BM) on the structure and physicochemical properties of three types of citrus fibers were investigated. With the extension of the grinding time, the particle size of citrus fibers significantly decreased. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that the three citrus fibers had similar chemical groups, and more -OH and phenolic acid groups were exposed after BM, and pectin and lignin were not degraded. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results showed that the appearance of particles changed from spherical to fragmented, irregular shapes. The water holding capacity (WHC), oil holding capacity (OHC), and water swelling capacity (WSC) of citrus fibers LM, JK, and FS reached the maximum value after BM of 2 h (increasing by 18.5%), 4 h (increasing by 46.1%), and 10 h (increasing by 38.3%), respectively. After 10 h BM, citrus fibers FS and JK had the highest adsorption capacity of cholesterol and sodium cholate, increasing by 48.3% and 48.6%, respectively. This indicates that BM transforms the spatial structure of citrus fibers and improves their physicochemical properties.

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to explore the impacts of different homogenization pressures, pasteurization conditions, and process sequence on the physical and chemical properties of soybean oil body (SOB)-substituted low-fat ice cream as well as the storage stability of SOB-substituted ice cream under these process parameters. With the increase of homogenization pressure (10–30 MPa), the increase of pasteurization temperature (65 °C for 30 min–85 °C for 15 min), and the addition of SOB before homogenization, the overrun and apparent viscosity of ice cream increased significantly, and the particle size, hardness, and melting rate decreased significantly. Thus, frozen dairy products of desired quality and condition could be obtained by optimizing process parameters. In addition, the SOB ice cream showed better storage stability, which was reflected in lower melting rate and hardness and more stable microstructure compared with the full-milk-fat ice cream. This study opened up new ideas for the application of SOB and the development of nutritious and healthy ice cream. Meanwhile, this research supplied a conceptual basis for the processing and quality optimization of SOB ice cream.

Abstract
The effect of different extraction processes on the physicochemical characterization, digestibility, antioxidant activity and prebiotic activity of Isaria cicadae Miquel (ICM) fruiting body polysaccharides was studied. Furthermore, the effect of ultrasound-assisted extraction of ICM (U-ICM) on gut microbiota, the intestinal barrier and immune response was deeply explored. This study found that ICMs showed high indigestibility in both α-amylase and artificial gastric juice, indicating that ICMs have the potential as dietary fiber. In contrast, U-ICM had the best antioxidant activity and prebiotic potential. Meanwhile, there was a structure-activity relationship between the antioxidant activity of ICMs and the content of uronic acid, arabinose and galactose. When healthy mice were fed U-ICM for 42 days, the relative abundances of Lactobacillus, Akkermansia, and Bacteroides were found to increase significantly, while that of Clostridium decreased significantly. Meanwhile, U-ICM significantly promotes the expression of tight junction protein and the production of cytokines, indicating that U-ICM had the function of enhancing the intestinal barrier and regulating the host immune response. In conclusion, U-ICM as dietary fiber has the potential to be developed as a gut health-promoting prebiotic component or functional food. This research provided a valuable resource for further exploring the structure-activity relationship and prebiotic activity of ICMs.

Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are a group of neurodevelopmental pathologies whose current treatment is neither curative nor effective. Anthocyanins are naturally occurring compounds abundant in blueberries and in other red fruits which have been shown to be successful in the treatment of several neurological diseases, at least in in vitro and in vivo disease models. The aim of the present work was to study the ability of an anthocyanin-rich extract (ARE) obtained from Portuguese blueberries to alleviate autism-like symptoms in a valproic acid (VPA) mouse model of ASD and to get insights into the underlying molecular mechanisms of such benefits. Therefore, pregnant BALB/c females were treated subcutaneously with a single dose of VPA (500 mg/kg) or saline on gestational day 12.5. Male offspring mice were orally treated with the ARE from Portuguese blueberries (30 mg/kg/day) or the vehicle for three weeks, and further subjected to behavioral tests and biochemical analysis. Our data suggested that the ARE treatment alleviated autism-like behaviors in in utero VPA-exposed mice and, at the same time, decreased both neuroinflammation and gut inflammation, modulated the gut microbiota composition, increased serotonin levels in cerebral prefrontal cortex and gut, and reduced the synaptic dysfunction verified in autistic mice. Overall, our work suggests that anthocyanins extracted from Portuguese blueberries could constitute an effective strategy to ameliorate typical autistic behaviors through modulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Abstract
With the increasing consumer demand for low-fat and low-cholesterol foods, low-fat mayonnaise prepared from soybean oil body (SOB) substitute for egg yolk has great consumption potential. However, based on previous studies, it was found that the stability and sensory properties of mayonnaise substituted with SOB were affected due to there being less lecithin and SOB containing more water. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of different ratios of xanthan gum, pectin and modified starch as stabilizers on the apparent viscosity, stability, texture and microstructure of SOB-substituted mayonnaise. It was found that the apparent viscosity and stability of SOB-substituted mayonnaise increased significantly when xanthan gum, pectin and modified starch were added in a ratio of 2:1:1. Meanwhile, the emulsified oil droplets of SOB-substituted mayonnaise were similar in size and uniformly dispersed in the emulsion system with different thickener formulations. In addition, the storage stability of SOB-substituted mayonnaise was explored. Compared with full egg yolk mayonnaise, SOB-substituted mayonnaise had better oxidative stability and bacteriostatic, which is important for the storage of mayonnaise. This study provided a theoretical basis for the food industry application of SOB. Meanwhile, this study provided new ideas for the development and storage of low-fat mayonnaise.

Abstract
Probiotics and prebiotics have received attention in alleviating neurodegenerative diseases. Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) 69-2 was combined with galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and supplemented in a d-galactose (d-gal)-induced neurodegeneration and memory impairment mice model to explore its effects on the brain and the regulation of short-chain fatty acids. The results showed that the L. plantarum-GOS supplementation inhibited d-gal-induced oxidative stress and increased the brain's nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) levels. Butyrate, a metabolite of the gut microbiota regulated by L. plantarum combined with GOS, inhibits p-JNK expression, downregulates pro-apoptotic proteins expression and the activation of inflammatory mediators, and upregulates synaptic protein expression. This might be a potential mechanism for L. plantarum 69-2 combined with GOS supplementation to alleviate d-gal-induced neurodegeneration and memory impairment. This study sheds new light on the development of aging-related neuroprotective dietary supplements based on the gut-brain axis.

Abstract
In this experiment, the effect of replacing milk fat with soybean fat body (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) on the quality, antioxidant capacity and in vitro digestive characteristics of yogurt was investigated while maintaining the total fat content of the yogurt unchanged. The results showed that increasing the substitution amount of soy fat body for milk fat had little effect on the pH and acidity of yogurt during the storage period, while the physicochemical properties, degree of protein gel network crosslinking, saturated fatty acid content, PV value and TBARS value of the yogurt significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, protein content, solids content, unsaturated fatty acid content, tocopherol content and water holding capacity significantly increased (p < 0.05). Flavor analysis revealed that yogurts with soybean oil bodies were significantly different when compared to those without soybean oil bodies (p < 0.05), and yogurt with 25% substitution had the highest sensory score. After in vitro digestion, the free fatty acid release, antioxidant capacity and protein digestibility of soybean oil body yogurt were significantly higher (p < 0.05). The SDS-PAGE results showed that the protein hydrolysis of the soybean oil body yogurt was faster. Therefore, the use of an appropriate amount of soybean oil bodies to replace milk fat is able to enhance the taste of yogurt and improve the quality of the yogurt.

Abstract
Gut microbes are closely associated with most human health. When ingested orally, probiotics can effectively regulate the composition and quantity of human intestinal microorganisms, which is beneficial to human health. However, probiotics will be affected by the harsh environment of the digestive tract during the in vivo transportation process, and ensuring the viability of probiotics is a great challenge. Probiotic encapsulating technology provides an effective solution to this problem. The introduction of extreme temperatures, large probiotic microcapsule sizes and the difficulty in controlling probiotic microcapsule particle sizes mean that traditional microcapsule encapsulation methods have some limitations. From traditional microcapsule technology to the bulk encapsulation of probiotics with nanofibers and nanoparticles to the recent ability to wear nano "armor" for a single probiotic through biofilm, biological membrane and nanocoating. Emerging probiotic nanoagents provides a new conceptual and development direction for the field of probiotic encapsulation. In this review, we presented the characteristics of encapsulated probiotic carrier materials and digestive tract transport systems, we focused on the encapsulation systems of probiotic nanoagents, we analyzed the shortcomings and advantages of the current agent encapsulation systems, and we stated the developmental direction and challenges for these agents for the future.

Abstract
The objective of the research was to analyze and compare the oxidative and physical stabilities of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) emulsions stabilized by two glycosylated hydrolysates (GPP-A and GPP-B) that were formed via two different pathways. This study showed that GPP-A exhibited higher browning intensity and DPPH radical scavenging ability in comparison with GPP-B. Moreover, the CLA emulsion formed by GPP-A exhibited a lower creaming index, average particle size, primary and secondary oxidative products, in comparison with GPP-B-loaded emulsion. However, the GPP-A-loaded emulsion showed a higher absolute potential and fraction of interfacial adsorption than that of the CLA emulsion formed by GPP-B. Therefore, the CLA emulsion formed by GPP-A exhibited stronger stabilities in comparison with the GPP-B-loaded emulsion. These results suggested that GPP-A showed an emulsification-based delivery system for embedding CLA to avoid the loss of biological activities. Additionally, the development of CLA emulsions could exert its physiological functions and prevent its oxidation.

Abstract
Soybean oil body (SOB) has potential as a milk fat substitute due to its ideal emulsification, stability and potential biological activity. In this study, SOB was used as a milk fat substitute to prepare ice cream, expecting to reduce the content of saturated fatty acid and improve the quality defects of ice cream products caused by the poor stability of milk fat at low temperatures. This study investigated the effect of SOB as a milk fat substitute (the substitution amount was 10–50%) on ice cream through apparent viscosity, particle size, overrun, melting, texture, sensory and digestive properties. The results show SOB substitution for milk fat significantly increased the apparent viscosity and droplet uniformity and decreased the particle size of the ice cream mixes, indicating that there were lots of intermolecular interactions to improve ice cream stability. In addition, ice cream with 30% to 50% SOB substitution had better melting properties and texture characteristics. The ice cream with 40% SOB substitution had the highest overall acceptability. Furthermore, SOB substitution for milk fat increased unsaturated fatty acid content in ice cream and fatty acid release during digestion, which had potential health benefits for consumers. Therefore, SOB as a milk fat substitute may be an effective way to improve the nutritional value and quality characteristics of dairy products.
