Mechanisms of bacterial resistance to environmental silver and antimicrobial strategies for silver: A review

The good antimicrobial properties of silver make it widely used in food, medicine, and environmental applications. However, the release and accumulation of silver-based antimicrobial agents in the environment is increasing with the extensive use of silver-based antimicrobials, and the prevalence of silver-resistant bacteria is increasing. To prevent the emergence of superbugs, it is necessary to exercise rational and strict control over drug use. The mechanism of bacterial resistance to silver has not been fully elucidated, and this article provides a review of the progress of research on the mechanism of bacterial resistance to silver. The results indicate that bacterial resistance to silver can occur through inducing silver particles aggregation and Ag+ reduction, inhibiting silver contact with and entry into cells, efflux of silver particles and Ag+ in cells, and activation of damage repair mechanisms. We propose that the bacterial mechanism of silver resistance involves a combination of interrelated systems. Finally, we discuss how this information can be used to develop the next generation of silver-based antimicrobials and antimicrobial therapies. And some antimicrobial strategies are proposed such as the "Trojan Horse" - camouflage, using efflux pump inhibitors to reduce silver efflux, working with "minesweeper", immobilization of silver particles.

Unexpected sequel to the application of silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride to an open carious lesion in a primary molar: A case report

OBJECTIVES

The use of silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride was designed for the treatment of open carious lesions in primary molars in dental outreach programs. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic when aerosol-producing procedures were inadvisable, one dental location started using it as the first stage in a two-visit restorative procedure for carious primary molars. If the gap between the fluoride application and the restoration placement stages was around 3-5 weeks it was noticed that a black friable crust appeared on the caries surface. To investigate further a normally discarded crust from one patient was retrieved and sent for analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two techniques suitable for identification and preliminary analysis of material of unknown composition, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used. The only preparation was that the specimen was dried and coated beforehand.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

This preliminary examination showed two unexpected findings. The first was that the crust surface indicated a possible dentine derivation as it was covered with reasonably evenly spaced holes. In addition, the EDS spectrum showed it to be, at least, partially mineralized. The second unexpected finding was that the surface was coated with electron-dense particles. The size of the particles and the EDS spectrum pointed to the likelihood of the majority of them being nanosilver. These unexpected findings suggest a possible new direction for research.

Nanotechnology, a frontier in agricultural science, a novel approach in abiotic stress management and convergence with new age medicine-A review

Climate change imposes various environmental stresses which substantially impact plant growth and productivity. Salinity, drought, temperature extremes, heavy metals, and nutritional imbalances are among several abiotic stresses contributing to high yield losses of crops in various parts of the world, resulting in food insecurity. Many interesting strategies are being researched in the attempt to improve plants' environmental stress tolerance. These include the application of nanoparticles, which have been found to improve plant function under stress situations. Nanotechnology will be a key driver in the upcoming agri-tech and pharmaceutical revolution, which promises a more sustainable, efficient, and resilient agricultural and medical system Nano-fertilizers can help plants utilise nutrients more efficiently by releasing nutrients slowly and sustainably. Plant physiology and nanomaterial features (such as size, shape, and charge) are important aspects influencing the impact on plant growth. Here, we discussed the most promising new opportunities and methodologies for using nanotechnology to increase the efficiency of critical inputs for crop agriculture, as well as to better manage biotic and abiotic stress. Potential development and implementation challenges are highlighted, emphasising the importance of designing suggested nanotechnologies using a systems approach. Finally, the strengths, flaws, possibilities, and risks of nanotechnology are assessed and analysed in order to present a comprehensive and clear picture of the nanotechnology potentials, as well as future paths for nano-based agri-food applications towards sustainability. Future research directions have been established in order to support research towards the long-term development of nano-enabled agriculture and evolution of pharmaceutical industry.

Biomimetic Control over Bimetallic Nanoparticle Structure and Activity via Peptide Capping Ligand Sequence

The controlled design of bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) is a key goal in tailoring their catalytic properties. Recently, biomimetic pathways demonstrated potent control over the distribution of different metals within BNPs, but a direct understanding of the peptide effect on the compositional distribution at the interparticle and intraparticle levels remains lacking. We synthesized two sets of PtAu systems with two peptides and correlated their structure, composition, and distributions with the catalytic activity. Structural and compositional analyses were performed by a combined machine learning-assisted refinement of X-ray absorption spectra and Z-contrast measurements by scanning transmission electron microscopy. The difference in the catalytic activities between nanoparticles synthesized with different peptides was attributed to the details of interparticle distribution of Pt and Au across these markedly heterogeneous systems, comprising Pt-rich, Au-rich, and Au core/Pt shell nanoparticles. The total amount of Pt in the shells of the BNPs was proposed to be the key catalytic activity descriptor. This approach can be extended to other systems of metals and peptides to facilitate the targeted design of catalysts with the desired activity.

Bacterial nano-factories as a tool for the biosynthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles: characterization and potential application in wastewater treatment

The development of reliable and eco-conscious processes for nanoparticle synthesis constitutes a significant element in nanotechnology. TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are becoming essential due to their potential uses in dentistry, surgery, agriculture, and pharmacy. This leads to the development of various procedures for producing TiO2 NPs using various physicochemical methods. Still, the drawbacks of these conventional methods are associated with the emission of toxic chemicals into the atmosphere and high energy demands in production, hence endangering the health and the environment. Problems issued are solved by green nanotechnology, which offers tools as nano-factories by utilizing biological sources to subside the improper effects of conventional methods and produces nanoparticles through synthesis methods that are clean, safe, energy-efficient, and cost-effective. Among the biogenic sources, microbial cells such as bacteria possess intrinsic pathways of converting metallic salt to nanoparticles due to their ability to produce reductase enzymes. Also, they can offer features to products such as high dispersity and produce sustainable nanoparticles at a large scale. Biosynthesized TiO2 NPs have high oxidizing potential and a wide range of applications, specifically as photosensitizers and antimicrobial agents. This review will address bacterial nano-factories that can be utilized for the biosynthesis of TiO2 NPs, the characterization of biosynthesized nanoparticles, and their potential application in wastewater treatment.

Emerging Nanotechnology for the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease

Nanotechnology is a great choice for medical research, and the green synthesis approach is a novel and better way to synthesize nanoparticles. Biological sources are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and allow large-scale production of nanoparticles. Naturally obtained 3 β-hydroxy-urs- 12-en-28-oic acids reported for neuroprotective and dendritic structure are reported as solubility enhancers. Plants are free from toxic substances and act as natural capping agents. In this review, the pharmacological properties of ursolic acid (UA) and the structural properties of the dendritic structure are discussed. UA acid appears to have negligible toxicity and immunogenicity, as well as favorable biodistribution, according to the current study, and the dendritic structure improves drug solubility, prevents drug degradation, increases circulation time, and potentially targets by using different pathways with different routes of administration. Nanotechnology is a field in which materials are synthesized at the nanoscale. Nanotechnology could be the next frontier of humankind's technological advancement. Richard Feynman first used the term 'Nanotechnology' in his lecture, "There is Plenty of Room at the Bottom", on 29th December, 1959, and since then, interest has increased in the research on nanoparticles. Nanotechnology is capable of helping humanity by solving major challenges, particularly in neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most prevalent type, which may account for 60-70% of cases. Other significant forms of dementia include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies (abnormal protein aggregates that form inside nerve cells), and a number of illnesses that exacerbate frontotemporal dementia. Dementia is an acquired loss of cognition in several cognitive domains that are severe enough to interfere with social or professional functioning. However, dementia frequently co-occurs with other neuropathologies, typically AD with cerebrovascular dysfunction. Clinical presentations show that neurodegenerative diseases are often incurable because patients permanently lose some neurons. A growing body of research suggests that they also advance our knowledge of the processes that are probably crucial for maintaining the health and functionality of the brain. Serious neurological impairment and neuronal death are the main features of neurodegenerative illnesses, which are also extremely crippling ailments. The most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders cause cognitive impairment and dementia, and as average life expectancy rises globally, their effects become more noticeable.

Green Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles from Olive and Walnut-Related Bacteria, Synthesis, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Activity

Many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of various plant extracts in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The phytochemical components of plant extracts contain biodegradable agents necessary for the stabilization and synthesis of nanoparticles. However, extracellular components of microorganisms have been shown to have similar activity in recent years. This study expects nanoparticle synthesis using silver nitrate using bacteria from different plant and soil parts in the Proteobacteria and Actinomycetes families in the endophytic and free form obtained from various sources, determining their antimicrobial properties on other pathogenic microorganisms. Nanoparticules showed a positive effect on antibiotic-resistant human pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus, Escherichia, and Acinetobacter), two strains of the human pathogenic Candida, and six different plant pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus, Fusarium, Gaeumannomyces, and Penicillium) compared to the reference antibiotics and antifungals. The physical forms and dimensions of the nanoparticles were determined by XRD, FTIR, UV-vis, and scanning electron microscopy. We believe that our findings will be the basis for the bacterial nanoparticle production procedures.

Synthesizing biomaterials in living organisms

Living organisms fabricate biomacromolecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins by the self-assembly process. The research on the mechanism of biomacromolecule formation also inspires the exploration of in vivo synthesized biomaterials. By elaborate design, artificial building blocks or precursors can self-assemble or polymerize into functional biomaterials within living organisms. In recent decades, these so-called in vivo synthesized biomaterials have achieved extensive applications in cell-fate manipulation, disease theranostics, bioanalysis, cellular surface engineering, and tissue regeneration. In this review, we classify strategies for in vivo synthesis into non-covalent, covalent, and genetic types. The development of these approaches is based on the chemical principles of supramolecular chemistry and synthetic chemistry, biological cues such as enzymes and microenvironments, and the means of synthetic biology. By summarizing the design principles in detail, some insights into the challenges and opportunities in this field are provided to  enlighten further research.

Bioinspired Multifunctional Silver Nanoparticles for Optical Sensing Applications: A Sustainable Approach

Silver nanoparticles developed via biosynthesis are the most fascinating nanosized particles and encompassed with excellent physicochemical properties. The bioinspired nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes have attracted huge attention due to their stability, low cost, environmental friendliness, and use of less hazardous chemicals. This is an ideal method for synthesizing a range of nanosized metal particles from plants and biomolecules. Optical biosensors are progressively being fabricated for the attainment of sustainability by using opportunities offered by nanotechnology. This review focuses mainly on tuning the optical properties of the metal nanoparticles for optical sensing to explore the importance and applications of bioinspired silver nanoparticles. Further, this review deliberates the role of bioinspired silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in biomedical, agricultural, environmental, and energy applications. Profound insight into the antimicrobial properties of these nanoparticles is also appreciated. Tailor-made bioinspired nanoparticles with effectuating characteristics can unsurprisingly target tumor cells and distribute enwrapped payloads intensively. Existing challenges and prospects of bioinspired Ag NPs are also summarized. This review is expected to deliver perceptions about the progress of the next generation of bioinspired Ag NPs and their outstanding performances in various fields by promoting sustainable practices for fabricating optical sensing devices.

Surface-modified bacteria: synthesis, functionalization and biomedical applications

The past decade has witnessed a great leap forward in bacteria-based living agents, including imageable probes, diagnostic reagents, and therapeutics, by virtue of their unique characteristics, such as genetic manipulation, rapid proliferation, colonization capability, and disease site targeting specificity. However, successful translation of bacterial bioagents to clinical applications remains challenging, due largely to their inherent susceptibility to environmental insults, unavoidable toxic side effects, and limited accumulation at the sites of interest. Cell surface components, which play critical roles in shaping bacterial behaviors, provide an opportunity to chemically modify bacteria and introduce different exogenous functions that are naturally unachievable. With the help of surface modification, a wide range of functionalized bacteria have been prepared over the past years and exhibit great potential in various biomedical applications. In this article, we mainly review the synthesis, functionalization, and biomedical applications of surface-modified bacteria. We first introduce the approaches of chemical modification based on the bacterial surface structure and then highlight several advanced functions achieved by modifying specific components on the surface. We also summarize the advantages as well as limitations of surface chemically modified bacteria in the applications of bioimaging, diagnosis, and therapy and further discuss the current challenges and possible solutions in the future. This work will inspire innovative design thinking for the development of chemical strategies for preparing next-generation biomedical bacterial agents.

Exploring the Biomedical Applications of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles Using Perilla frutescens Flavonoid Extract: Antibacterial, Antioxidant, and Cell Toxicity Properties against Colon Cancer Cells

The present study reports the biomimetic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using a simple, cost effective and eco-friendly method. In this method, the flavonoid extract of Perilla frutescens (PFFE) was used as a bioreduction agent for the reduction of metallic silver into nanosilver, called P. frutescens flavonoid extract silver nanoparticles (PFFE-AgNPs). The Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrum showed a characteristic absorption peak at 440 nm that confirmed the synthesis of PFFE-AgNPs. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) analysis of the PFFE-AgNPs revealed that flavonoids are involved in the bioreduction and capping processes. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns confirmed the face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure of PFFE-AgNPs. A transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis indicated that the synthesized PFFE-AgNPs are 20 to 70 nm in size with spherical morphology and without any aggregation. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies showed that the average hydrodynamic size was 44 nm. A polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.321 denotes the monodispersed nature of PFFE-AgNPs. Further, a highly negative surface charge or zeta potential value (-30 mV) indicates the repulsion, non-aggregation, and stability of PFFE-AgNPs. PFFE-AgNPs showed cytotoxic effects against cancer cell lines, including human colon carcinoma (COLO205) and mouse melanoma (B16F10), with IC50 concentrations of 59.57 and 69.33 μg/mL, respectively. PFFE-AgNPs showed a significant inhibition of both Gram-positive (Listeria monocytogens and Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative (Salmonella typhi and Acinetobacter baumannii) bacteria pathogens. PFFE-AgNPs exhibited in vitro antioxidant activity by quenching 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) free radicals with IC50 values of 72.81 and 92.48 µg/mL, respectively. In this study, we also explained the plausible mechanisms of the biosynthesis, anticancer, and antibacterial effects of PFFE-AgNPs. Overall, these findings suggest that PFFE-AgNPs have potential as a multi-functional nanomaterial for biomedical applications, particularly in cancer therapy and infection control. However, it is important to note that further research is needed to determine the safety and efficacy of these nanoparticles in vivo, as well as to explore their potential in other areas of medicine.

Formation of silver halos by Sphingomonas paucimobilis MX8 and its bioleaching of silver from computer keyboard printed circuit boards

Silver (Ag) is currently obtained from primary and secondary sources through hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. However, these processes consume high amounts of energy and are environmentally unfriendly. The search for bacteria tolerant with a high leaching capacity for to Ag is therefore a necessary requirement as part of the development of bioleaching technologies with reduced impact on the environment and lower energy expenditure. In this sense, the objective of this research was to evaluate the tolerance of Sphingomonas paucimobilis MX8 to Ag added to nutrient agar, and to determine whether this tolerance could favor the bioleaching of Ag present on the printed circuit boards (PCBs) of computer keyboards. The bacteria Sphingomonas paucimobilis MX8 was cultured in Petri dishes with nutrient agar and four different concentrations of AgNO3 (200, 400, 600, and 800 mg L-1) at 28 °C for 10 days. For the bioleaching experiment, the bacteria were grown in a mineral medium with computer keyboard PCBs for 30 days at room temperature (17 to 22 °C) and centrifugation at 150 rpm. The results indicate that Sphingomonas paucimobilis MX8 is tolerant to Ag and forms a silvery halo around its growth in the presence of this metal. Furthermore, Sphingomonas paucimobilis MX8 was able to bioleach 12% of the Ag found in computer keyboard PCBs. The results obtained could help generate more environmentally friendly silver bioleaching processes in which the silver bioleaching capacity of this bacterium is increased.

Advances in therapeutic applications of silver nanoparticles

Nanotechnology is one of the most appealing area for developing new applications in biotechnology and medicine. For decades, nanoparticles have been extensively studied for a variety of biomedical applications. Silver has evolved into a potent antibacterial agent that can be used in a variety of nanostructured materials of various shapes and sizes. Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) based antimicrobial compounds are employed in a wide range of applications, including medicinal uses, surface treatment and coatings, the chemical and food industries, and agricultural productivity. When designing formulations for specific applications, the size, shape, and surface area of AgNPs are all crucial structural aspects to consider. Different methods for producing AgNPs with varying sizes and forms that are less harmful have been devised. The anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-angiogenic properties of AgNPs have been addressed in this review, as well as their generation and processes. Herein, we have reviewed the advances in therapeutic applications of AgNPs, as well as their limitations and barriers for future applications.

Fungi-mediated synthesis of nanoparticles: characterization process and agricultural applications

In the field of nanotechnology, the use of biologically active products from fungi for the reduction and synthesis of nanoparticles as an alternative to toxic chemicals has received extensive attention, due to their production of large quantities of proteins, high yields, easy handling, and the low toxicity of the residues. Fungi have become valuable tools for the manufacture of nanoparticles in comparison with other biological systems because of their enhanced growth control and diversity of metabolites, including enzymes, proteins, peptides, polysaccharides, and other macro-molecules. The ability to use different species of fungi and to perform the synthesis under different conditions enables the production of nanoparticles with different physicochemical characteristics. Fungal nanotechnology has been used to develop and offer products and services in the agricultural, medicinal, and industrial sectors. Agriculturally, it has found applications in plant disease management, crop improvement, biosensing, and the production of environmentally friendly, non-toxic pesticides and fertilizers to enhance agricultural production in general. The subject of this review is the application of fungi in the synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles, characterization, and possible applications of fungal nanoparticles in the diverse agricultural sector. The literature shows potential uses of fungi in biogenic synthesis, enabling the production of nanoparticles with different physiognomies. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Nanoplatforms: The future of oral cancer treatment

Background and Aims

Cytotoxicity is a key disadvantage of using chemotherapeutic drugs to treat cancer. This can be overcome by encapsulating chemotherapeutic drugs in suitable carriers for targeted delivery, allowing them to be released only at the cancerous sites. Herein, we aim to review the recent scientific developments in the utilization of nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems for treating oral malignancies that can lead to further improvements in clinical practice.

Methods

A comprehensive literature search was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and other notable databases to identify recent peer-reviewed clinical trials, reviews, and research articles related to nanoplatforms and their applications in oral cancer treatment.

Results

Nanoplatforms offer a revolutionary strategy to overcome the challenges associated with conventional oral cancer treatments, such as poor drug solubility, non-specific targeting, and systemic toxicity. These nanoscale drug delivery systems encompass various formulations, including liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, dendrimers, and hydrogels, which facilitate controlled release and targeted delivery of therapeutic agents to oral cancer sites. By exploiting the enhanced permeability and retention effect, Nanoplatforms accumulate preferentially in the tumor microenvironment, increasing drug concentration and minimizing damage to healthy tissues. Additionally, nanoplatforms can be engineered to carry multiple drugs or a combination of drugs and diagnostic agents, enabling personalized and precise treatment approaches.

Conclusion

The utilization of nanoplatforms in oral cancer treatment holds significant promise in revolutionizing therapeutic strategies. Despite the promising results in preclinical studies, further research is required to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and long-term effects of nanoformulations in clinical settings. If successfully translated into clinical practice, nanoplatform-based therapies have the potential to improve patient outcomes, reduce side effects, and pave the way for more personalized and effective oral cancer treatments.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Loaded Hydrogel for Wound Healing; Systematic Review

Wound healing is a biological process that involves a series of consecutive process, and its impairment can lead to chronic wounds and various complications. Recently, there has been a growing interest in employing nanotechnology to enhance wound healing. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have expanded significant attention due to their wide range of applications in the medical field. The advantages of AgNPs include their easy synthesis, change their shape, and high surface area. Silver nanoparticles are very efficient for topical drug administration and wound healing because of their high ratio of surface area to volume. The efficiency of AgNPs depends on the synthesis method and the intended application. Green synthesis methods offer an eco-friendly approach by utilizing natural sources such as plant extracts and fungus. The characterization of nanoparticles plays an important character, and it is accomplished through the use of several characterization methods such as UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These techniques are employed to confirm the specific characters of the prepared Silver Nanoparticles. Additionally, the review addresses the challenges and future perspectives of utilizing green-synthesized AgNPs loaded in Polyacrylamide hydrogel for wound healing applications, including the optimization of nanoparticle size, and release kinetics. Overall, this review highlights the potential of green-synthesized AgNPs loaded in Polyacrylamide hydrogel as promising for advanced wound healing therapies. There are different approaches of usage of AgNPs for wound healing such as polyacrylamide -hydrogels, and the mechanism after their antibacterial action, have been exposed.

Antibacterial and anticancer activities of green-synthesized silver nanoparticles using Photinia glabra fruit extract

Aims: We prepared Photinia glabra (PG) aqueous fruit extract, utilized it to synthesize silver nanoparticles (PG-Ag NPs) and evaluated the antibacterial and anticancer activities of the nanoparticles (NPs). Materials & methods: Silver nitrate aqueous solution was reduced to PG-Ag NPs using aqueous PG fruit extract. NP shape, size, composition and functionalization were determined using transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared and x-ray diffraction. Results & conclusions: PG-Ag NPs were spherical, approximately 39-77 nm-sized, functionalized surfaces with notable antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with an MIC <30 ug/ml and cytotoxicity toward esophageal cancer cells, with IC50 values less than 20 ug/ml. PG-Ag@rt NPs have been shown to be a potent antibacterial and anticancer agent, and their enriched particle surfaces can be conjugated with other compounds for multibiomedical applications.

Biogenic Copper Selenide Nanoparticles for Near-Infrared Photothermal Therapy Application

Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy (PTT) is attractive for cancer treatment but is currently restricted by limited availability and insufficient NIR-II photoactivity of photothermal agents, for which artificial nanomaterials are usually used. Here, we report the first use of biogenic nanomaterials for PTT application. A fine-controlled extracellular biosynthesis of copper selenide nanoparticles (bio-Cu_2-xSe) by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was realized. The resulting bio-Cu_2-xSe, with fine sizes (∼35.5 nm) and high product purity, exhibited 76.9% photothermal conversion efficiency under 1064 nm laser irradiation, outperforming almost all the existing counterparts. The protein capping also imparted good biocompatibility to bio-Cu_2-xSe to favor a safe PTT application. The in vivo PTT with injected bio-Cu_2-xSe in mice (without extraction nor further modification) showed 87% tumor ablation without impairing the normal organisms. Our work not only opens a green route to synthesize the NIR-II photothermal nanomaterial but may also lay a basis for the development of bacteria-nanomaterial hybrid therapy technologies.

Advances in CO2 utilization employing anisotropic nanomaterials as catalysts: a review

Anisotropic nanomaterials are materials with structures and properties that vary depending on the direction in which they are measured. Unlike isotropic materials, which exhibit uniform physical properties in all directions, anisotropic materials have different mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical properties in different directions. Examples of anisotropic nanomaterials include nanocubes, nanowires, nanorods, nanoprisms, nanostars, and so on. These materials have unique properties that make them useful in a variety of applications, such as electronics, energy storage, catalysis, and biomedical engineering. One of the key advantages of anisotropic nanomaterials is their high aspect ratio, which refers to the ratio of their length to their width, which can enhance their mechanical and electrical properties, making them suitable for use in nanocomposites and other nanoscale applications. However, the anisotropic nature of these materials also presents challenges in their synthesis and processing. For example, it can be difficult to align the nanostructures in a specific direction to impart modulation of a specific property. Despite these challenges, research into anisotropic nanomaterials continues to grow, and scientists are working to develop new synthesis methods and processing techniques to unlock their full potential. Utilization of carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a renewable and sustainable source of carbon has been a topic of increasing interest due to its impact on reducing the level of greenhouse gas emissions. Anisotropic nanomaterials have been used to improve the efficiency of CO₂ conversion into useful chemicals and fuels using a variety of processes such as photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. More study is required to improve the usage of anisotropic nanomaterials for CO₂ consumption and to scale up these technologies for industrial use. The unique properties of anisotropic nanomaterials, such as their high surface area, tunable morphology, and high activity, make them promising catalysts for CO₂ utilization. This review article discusses briefly about various approaches towards the synthesis of anisotropic nanomaterials and their applications in CO₂ utilization. The article also highlights the challenges and opportunities in this field and the future direction of research.

Cytotoxicity and Antibiofilm Activity of Silver-Polypropylene Nanocomposites

The development of biocompatible nanomaterials that interface with human skin and tissue is critical for advancing prosthetics and other therapeutic medical needs. In this perspective, the development of nanoparticles with cytotoxicity and antibiofilm properties and biocompatibility characteristics are important. Metallic silver (Ag) exhibits good biocompatibility, but it is often challenging to integrate it into a nanocomposite without compromising its antibiofilm properties for optimal applications. In this study, new polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) with ultra-low filling content (0.0023-0.046 wt%) of Ag nanoplates were manufactured and tested. The cytotoxicity and antibiofilm activity of different composites with polypropylene (PP) matrix were examined. At first, PNCs surface were analyzed by means of AFM (atomic force microscopy) with phase contrast evaluation and FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) to study the Ag nanoplates distribution. Subsequently, the cytotoxicity and growth properties of biofilms were assessed by MTT assay protocol and detection of nitric oxide radicals. Antibacterial and antibiofilm activities were measured against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (K. pneumoniae). The PNCs with silver exhibited antibiofilm activity although they did not inhibit regular planktonic bacterial growth. Moreover, the PNCs were not cytotoxic to mammalian cells and did not induce significant immune response. These features reveal the potential of the PNCs developed in this study for usage in fabrication of prosthetics and other smart structures for biomedical applications.

Biogenic silver based nanostructures: Synthesis, mechanistic approach and biological applications

The alarming impact of antibiotic resistance sparked the quest for complementary treatments to overcome the confrontation over resistant pathogens. Metallic nanoparticles, especially silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have gained a much attention because of their remarkable biological characteristics. Moreover, their medicinal properties can be enhanced by preparing the composites with other materials. This article delves a comprehensive review of biosynthesis route for Ag NPs and their nanocomposites (NCs) with in-depth mechanism, methods and favorable experimental parameters. Comprehensive biological features Ag NPs such as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal have been examined, with a focus on their potential uses in biomedicine and diagnostics has also been discussed. Additionally, we have also explored the hitches and potential outcomes of biosynthesis of Ag NPs in biomedical filed.

Biologically-induced synthetic manganese carbonate precipitate (BISMCP) for potential applications in heavy metal removal

Heavy metal pollution of water is a burning issue of today's world. Among several strategies involved for heavy metal remediation purpose, biomineralization has shown great potential. Of late, research has been focused on developing effective mineral adsorbents with reduced time and cost consumption. In this present paper, the Biologically-Induced Synthetic Manganese Carbonate Precipitate (BISMCP) was produced based on the biologically-induced mineralization method, employing Sporosarcina pasteurii in aqueous solutions containing urea and MnCl₂. The prepared adsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and BET surface area analyzer. EDX analysis showed the elements in the crystal BISMCP were Mn, C, and O. XRD result of BISMCP determined the crystal structure, which is close to rhodochrosite (MnCO₃). Spectral peaks of FTIR at 1641.79 cm^-1 confirmed the appearance of C[bond, double bond]O binding, with strong stretching of CO₃^2- in Amide I. From the six kinds of BISMCP produced, sample MCP-6 has the higher specific surface area by BET analysis at 109.01 m²/g, with pore size at 8.76 nm and higher pore volume at 0.178 cm³/g. These specifications will be suitable as an adsorbent for heavy metal removal by adsorption process. This study presents a preliminary analysis of the possibility of BISMCP for heavy metals adsorption using ICP multi-element standard solution XIII (As, Cr, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn). BISMCP formed from 0.1 MnCl₂ and 30 ml of bacteria volume (MCP-6) produced a better adsorbent material than others concentrations, with the adsorption efficiency of total As at 98.9%, Cr at 97.0%, Cu at 94.7%, Cd at 88.3%, Zn at 48.6%, and Ni at 29.5%. Future work could be examined its efficiency adsorbing individual heavy metals.

Nanobiotechnological approaches in anticoagulant therapy: The role of bioengineered silver and gold nanomaterials

Nanotechnology is a novel area that has exhibited various remarkable applications, mostly in medicine and industry, due to the unique properties coming with the nanoscale size. One of the notable medical uses of nanomaterials (NMs) that attracted enormous attention recently is their significant anticoagulant activity, preventing or reducing coagulation of blood, decreasing the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and other serious conditions. Despite successful in vitro experiments, in vivo analyses are yet to be confirmed and further research is required to fully prove the safety and efficacy of nanoparticles (NPs) and to introduce them as valid alternatives to conventional ineffective anticoagulants with various shortcomings and side-effects. NMs can be synthesized through two main routes, i.e., the bottom-up route as a more preferable method, and the top-down route. In numerous studies, biological fabrication of NPs, especially metal NPs, is highly suggested given its eco-friendly approach, in which different resources can be employed such as plants, fungi, bacteria, and algae. This review discusses the green synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as two of the most useful metal NPs, and also their alloys in different studies focussing on their anticoagulant potential. Challenges and alternative approaches to the use of these NPs as anticoagulants have also been highlighted.

Polymerization in living organisms

Vital biomacromolecules, such as RNA, DNA, polysaccharides and proteins, are synthesized inside cells via the polymerization of small biomolecules to support and multiply life. The study of polymerization reactions in living organisms is an emerging field in which the high diversity and efficiency of chemistry as well as the flexibility and ingeniousness of physiological environment are incisively and vividly embodied. Efforts have been made to design and develop in situ intra/extracellular polymerization reactions. Many important research areas, including cell surface engineering, biocompatible polymerization, cell behavior regulation, living cell imaging, targeted bacteriostasis and precise tumor therapy, have witnessed the elegant demeanour of polymerization reactions in living organisms. In this review, recent advances in polymerization in living organisms are summarized and presented according to different polymerization methods. The inspiration from biomacromolecule synthesis in nature highlights the feasibility and uniqueness of triggering living polymerization for cell-based biological applications. A series of examples of polymerization reactions in living organisms are discussed, along with their designs, mechanisms of action, and corresponding applications. The current challenges and prospects in this lifeful field are also proposed.

Myco-Nanofabrication of Silver Nanoparticles by Penicillium brasilianum NP5 and Their Antimicrobial, Photoprotective and Anticancer Effect on MDA-MB-231 Breast Cancer Cell Line

Currently, the exploration of fungal organisms for novel metabolite production and its pharmacological applications is much appreciated in the biomedical field. In the present study, the fungal strains were isolated from soil of unexplored Yellapura regions. The potent isolate NP5 was selected based on preliminary screening and identified as Penicillium brasilianum NP5 through morphological, microscopic, and molecular characterizations. Synthesis of silver nanoparticles from P. brasilianum was confirmed by the color change of the reaction mixture and UV-visible surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectra of 420 nm. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis revealed the functional groups involved in synthesis. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis showed aggregation of the NPs, with sizes ranged from 10 to 60 nm, an average particle size of 25.32 nm, and a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.40. The crystalline nature and silver as the major element in NP5-AgNPs was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The negative value −15.3 mV in Zeta potential exhibited good stability, and thermostability was recorded by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). NP5-AgNPs showed good antimicrobial activity on selected human pathogens in a concentration-dependent manner. The MTT assay showed concentration-dependent anticancer activity with an IC50 of 41.93 µg/mL on the MDA-MB-231 cell line. Further, apoptotic study was carried out by flow cytometry to observe the rate of apoptosis. The calculated sun protection factor (SPF) value confirms good photoprotection capacity. From the results obtained, NP5-AgNPs can be used in the pharmaceutical field after successful in vitro clinical studies.

Cell-free synthesis of silver nanoparticles in spent media of different Aspergillus species

The recovery and valorization of metals and rare earth metals from wastewater are of great importance to prevent environmental pollution and recover valuable resources. Certain bacterial and fungal species are capable of removing metal ions from the environment by facilitating their reduction and precipitation. Even though the phenomenon is well documented, little is known about the mechanism. Therefore, we systematically investigated the influence of nitrogen sources, cultivation time, biomass, and protein concentration on silver reduction capacities of cell-free cultivation media (spent media) of Aspergillus niger, A. terreus, and A. oryzae. The spent medium of A. niger showed the highest silver reduction capacities with up to 15 μmol per milliliter spent medium when ammonium was used as the sole N-source. Silver ion reduction in the spent medium was not driven by enzymes and did not correlate with biomass concentration. Nearly full reduction capacity was reached after 2 days of incubation, long before the cessation of growth and onset of the stationary phase. The size of silver nanoparticles formed in the spent medium of A. niger was influenced by the nitrogen source, with silver nanoparticles formed in nitrate or ammonium-containing medium having an average diameter of 32 and 6 nm, respectively.

Biosensing and anti-inflammatory effects of silver, copper and iron nanoparticles from the leaf extract of Catharanthus roseus

Background

In this study, we present a low-cost, environmentally friendly method for producing silver, copper, and iron nanoparticles using fresh Catharanthus roseus leaf extract. The biomolecules found in the plant extract play a crucial role as stabilizing and reducing agents. The spectral profile of the UV–visible spectrophotometer was measured to confirm and identify the biosynthesized nanoparticles. The synthesized nanoparticles were tested for biosensing activities and anti-inflammatory effects.

Result

UV–visible spectra showed a prominent surface resonance peak of 415 nm, 300 nm, and 400 nm, corresponding to the formation of silver, copper, and iron nanoparticles, respectively. The in vitro anti-inflammatory properties of the synthesized AgNPs, CuNPs, and FeNPs showed the maximum inhibition of protein denaturation at 58%, 54.15%, and 44.26% at a concentration of 400 µg/ml, respectively. Furthermore, at a 400 µg/ml concentration, Diclofenac, utilized as a control, showed a maximal inhibition of 93.37%. According to the biosensing activity, these nanoparticles are also a good source for biosensing hazardous heavy salts. So, this article provides the first description of the silver, copper, and iron nanoparticles from Catharanthus roseus leave biosensing capabilities and anti-inflammatory characteristics.

Conclusion

Overall, this study revealed that due to their biocompatibility, silver, copper, and iron nanoparticles could be appealing and environmentally acceptable options that could be used as innovative therapeutic agents for the prevention and treatment of inflammation. The primary outcome of the research will be the development of potential pharmaceutical uses for the C. roseus medicinal plant in the biomedical and nanotechnology-based industries.

Silver-Based Surface Plasmon Sensors: Fabrication and Applications

A series of novel phenomena such as optical nonlinear enhancement effect, transmission enhancement, orientation effect, high sensitivity to refractive index, negative refraction and dynamic regulation of low threshold can be generated by the control of surface plasmon (SP) with metal micro-nano structure and metal/material composite structure. The application of SP in nano-photonics, super-resolution imaging, energy, sensor detection, life science, and other fields shows an important prospect. Silver nanoparticles are one of the commonly used metal materials for SP because of their high sensitivity to refractive index change, convenient synthesis, and high controllable degree of shape and size. In this review, the basic concept, fabrication, and applications of silver-based surface plasmon sensors are summarized.

Utilizing a divalent metal ion transporter to control biogenic nanoparticle synthesis

Biogenic synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials has been demonstrated for both wild and engineered bacterial strains. In many systems the nucleation and growth of nanomaterials is poorly controlled and requires concentrations of heavy metals toxic to living cells. Here, we utilized the tools of synthetic biology to engineer a strain of Escherichia coli capable of synthesizing cadmium sulfide nanoparticles from low concentrations of reactants with control over the location of synthesis. Informed by simulations of bacterially-assisted nanoparticle synthesis, we created a strain of E. coli expressing a broad-spectrum divalent metal transporter, ZupT, and a synthetic CdS nucleating peptide. Expression of ZupT in the outer membrane and placement of the nucleating peptide in the periplasm focused synthesis within the periplasmic space and enabled sufficient nucleation and growth of nanoparticles at sub-toxic levels of the reactants. This strain synthesized internal CdS quantum dot nanoparticles with spherical morphology and an average diameter of approximately 3.3 nm.

Impact of Nanotechnology on Differentiation and Augmentation of Stem Cells for Liver Therapy

The liver is one of the crucial organs of the body that performs hundreds of chemical reactions needed by the body to survive. It is also the largest gland of the body. The liver has multiple functions, including the synthesis of chemicals, metabolism of nutrients, and removal of toxins. It also acts as a storage unit. The liver has a unique ability to regenerate itself, but it can lead to permanent damage if the injury is beyond recovery. The only possible treatment of severe liver damage is liver transplant which is a costly procedure and has several other drawbacks. Therefore, attention has been shifted towards the use of stem cells that have shown the ability to differentiate into hepatocytes. Among the numerous kinds of stem cells (SCs), the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are the most famous. Various studies suggest that an MSC transplant can repair liver function, improve the signs and symptoms, and increase the chances of survival. This review discusses the impact of combining stem cell therapy with nanotechnology. By integrating stem cell science and nanotechnology, the information about stem cell differentiation and regulation will increase, resulting in a better comprehension of stem cell-based treatment strategies. The augmentation of SCs with nanoparticles has been shown to boost the effect of stem cell-based therapy. Also, the function of green nanoparticles in liver therapies is discussed.

Biofabrication of nanoparticles: sources, synthesis, and biomedical applications

Nanotechnology is an emerging applied science delivering crucial human interventions. Biogenic nanoparticles produced from natural sources have received attraction in recent times due to their positive attributes in both health and the environment. It is possible to produce nanoparticles using various microorganisms, plants, and marine sources. The bioreduction mechanism is generally employed for intra/extracellular synthesis of biogenic nanoparticles. Various biogenic sources have tremendous bioreduction potential, and capping agents impart stability. The obtained nanoparticles are typically characterized by conventional physical and chemical analysis techniques. Various process parameters, such as sources, ions, and temperature incubation periods, affect the production process. Unit operations such as filtration, purification, and drying play a role in the scale-up setup. Biogenic nanoparticles have extensive biomedical and healthcare applications. In this review, we summarized various sources, synthetic processes, and biomedical applications of metal nanoparticles produced by biogenic synthesis. We highlighted some of the patented inventions and their applications. The applications range from drug delivery to biosensing in various therapeutics and diagnostics. Although biogenic nanoparticles appear to be superior to their counterparts, the molecular mechanism degradation pathways, kinetics, and biodistribution are often missing in the published literature, and scientists should focus more on these aspects to move them from the bench side to clinics.

Extracellular biosynthesis, OVAT/statistical optimization, and characterization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Leclercia adecarboxylata THHM and its antimicrobial activity

BACKGROUND

The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is an area of interest for researchers due to its eco-friendly approach. The use of biological approaches provides a clean and promising alternative process for the synthesis of AgNPs. We used for the first time the supernatant of Leclercia adecarboxylata THHM under optimal conditions to produce AgNPs with an acceptable antimicrobial activity against important clinical pathogens.

RESULTS

In this study, soil bacteria from different locations were isolated and screened for their potential to form AgNPs. The selected isolate, which was found to have the ability to biosynthesize AgNPs, was identified by molecular methods as Leclercia adecarboxylata THHM and its 16S rRNA gene was deposited in GenBank under the accession number OK605882. Different conditions were screened for the maximum production of AgNPs by the selected bacteria. Five independent variables were investigated through optimizations using one variable at a time (OVAT) and the Plackett-Burman experimental design (PBD). The overall optimal parameters for enhancing the biosynthesis of AgNPs using the supernatant of Leclercia adecarboxylata THHM as a novel organism were at an incubation time of 72.0 h, a concentration of 1.5 mM silver nitrate, a temperature of 40.0 °C, a pH of 7.0, and a supernatant concentration of 30% (v/v) under illumination conditions. The biosynthesized AgNPs have been characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The biosynthesized AgNPs showed an absorption peak at 423 nm, spherical shape, and an average particle size of 17.43 nm. FTIR shows the bands at 3321.50, 2160.15, and 1636.33 cm^-1 corresponding to the binding vibrations of amine, alkyne nitrile, and primary amine bands, respectively. The biosynthesized AgNPs showed antimicrobial activity against a variety of microbial pathogens of medical importance. Using resazurin-based microtiter dilution, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for AgNPs were 500 µg/mL for all microbial pathogens except for Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC13883, which has a higher MIC value of 1000 µg/mL.

CONCLUSIONS

The obtained data revealed the successful green production of AgNPs using the supernatant of Leclercia adecarboxylata THHM that can be effectively used as an antimicrobial agent against most human pathogenic microbes.

Nanodelivery of antiretroviral drugs to nervous tissues

Despite the development of effective combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), the neurocognitive impairments associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remain challenging. The presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCFB) impedes the adequate penetration of certain antiretroviral drugs into the brain. In addition, reports have shown that some antiretroviral drugs cause neurotoxicity resulting from their interaction with nervous tissues due to long-term systemic exposure. Therefore, the research into the effective therapeutic modality that would cater for the HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) and ART toxicity is now receiving broad research attention. Thus, this review explores the latest information in managing HAND using a nanoparticle drug delivery system (NDDS). We discussed the neurotoxicity profile of various approved ART. Also, we explained the applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in medicine, their different synthesis methods and their interaction with nervous tissues. Lastly, while proposing AgNPs as useful nanoparticles in properly delivering ART to enhance effectiveness and minimize neurocognitive disorders, we hypothesize that the perceived toxicity of AgNPs could be minimized by taking appropriate precautions. One such precaution is using appropriate reducing and stabilizing agents such as trisodium citrate to reduce silver ion Ag + to ground state Ag0 during the synthesis. Also, the usage of medium-sized, spherical-shaped AgNPs is encouraged in AgNPs-based drug delivery to the brain due to their ability to deliver therapeutic agents across BBB. In addition, characterization and functionalization of the synthesized AgNPs are required during the drug delivery approach. Putting all these factors in place would minimize toxicity and enhance the usage of AgNPs in delivering therapeutic agents across the BBB to the targeted brain tissue and could cater for the HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders and neurotoxic effects of antiretroviral drugs (ARDs).

Microbes-mediated synthesis strategies of metal nanoparticles and their potential role in cancer therapeutics

Past few years have seen a paradigm shift towards ecofriendly, green and biological fabrication of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) for diverse nanomedicinal applications especially in cancer nanotheranostics. Besides, the well-known green synthesis methods of plant materials, the potential of the microbial world (bacteria, fungi, alga, etc.) in biofabrication is equally realized. Biomolecules and enzymes in the microbial cells are capable of catalyzing the biosynthesis process. These microbial derived inorganic nanoparticles have been frequently evaluated as potential agents in cancer therapies revealing exciting results. Through, cellular and molecular pathways, these microbial derived nanoparticles are capable of killing the cancer cells. Considering the recent developments in the anticancer applications of microbial derived inorganic MNPs, a dire need was felt to bring the available information to a single document. This manuscript reviews not only the mechanistic aspects of the microbial derived MNPs but also include the diverse mechanisms that governs their anticancer potential. Besides, an updated literature review is presented that includes studies of 2019-onwards.

Mechanistic and recent updates in nano-bioremediation for developing green technology to alleviate agricultural contaminants

The rise in environmental pollutant levels in recent years is mostly attributable to anthropogenic activities such as industrial, agricultural and other activities. Additionally, these activities may produce excessive levels of dangerous toxicants such as heavy metals, organic pollutants including pesticide and herbicide chemicals, and sewage discharges from residential and commercial sources. With a focus on environmentally friendly, sustainable technology, new technologies such as combined process of nanotechnology and bioremediation are urgently needed to accelerate the cost-effective remediation process to alleviate toxic contaminants than the conventional remediation methods. Numerous studies have shown that nanoparticles possess special qualities including improved catalysis and adsorption as well as increased reactivity. Currently, microorganisms and their extracts are being used as promising, environmentally friendly catalysts for engineered nanomaterial. In the long term, this combination of both technologies called nano-bioremediation may significantly alter the field of environmental remediation since it is more intelligent, safe, environmentally friendly, economical and green. This review provides an overview of soil and water remediation techniques as well as the use of nano-bioremediation, which is made from various living organisms. Additionally, current developments related to the mechanism, model and kinetic studies for remediation of agricultural contaminants have been discussed.

Nanotechnological interventions of the microbiome as a next-generation antimicrobial therapy

The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) impacts public health due to the diminished potency of existing antibiotics. The microbiome plays an important role in the host's immune system activity and shows the history of exposure to antimicrobials and its manipulation in combating antimicrobial resistance. Advancements in gene technologies, DNA sequencing, and computational biology have emerged as powerful platforms to better understand the relationship between animals and microorganisms (MOs). The past few years have witnessed an increase in the use of nanotechnology, both in industry and in academia, as tools to tackle antimicrobial resistance. New strategies of microbiome manipulation have been developed, such as the use of prebiotics, probiotics, peptides, antibodies, an appropriate diet, phage therapy, and the use of various nanotechnological techniques. Owing to the research outcomes, targeted delivery of antimicrobials with some modifications with nanoparticles can lead to the destruction of resistant microbial cells. In addition, nanoparticles have been studied for their potential antimicrobial effects both in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we highlight key opportunistic areas for applying nanotechnologies with the aim of manipulating the microbiome for the treatment of antimicrobial resistance. Besides providing a detailed review on various nanomaterials, technologies, opportunities, technical needs, and potential approaches for the manipulation of the microbiome to address these challenges, we discuss future challenges and our perspective.

Insights into the mapping of green synthesis conditions for ZnO nanoparticles and their toxicokinetics

Research on ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) has broad medical applications. However, the green synthesis of ZnO NPs involves a wide range of properties requiring optimization. ZnO NPs show toxicity at lower doses. This toxicity is a function of NP properties and pharmacokinetics. Moreover, NP toxicity and pharmacokinetics are affected by the species type and age of the animals tested. Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling offers a mechanistic platform to scrutinize the colligative effect of the interplay between these factors, which reduces the need for in vivo studies. This review provides a guide to choosing green synthesis conditions that result in minimal toxicity using a mechanistic tool, namely PBPK modeling.

Characterization of the biosynthesized intracellular and extracellular plasmonic silver nanoparticles using Bacillus cereus and their catalytic reduction of methylene blue

The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) has been studied in detail using two different approaches. For the first time, Bacillus cereus is used for one-pot biosynthesis of capsulated Ag NPs, using both intracellular and extracellular approaches. To discriminate between the produced nanostructures by these two approaches, their structures, nanomorphologies, optical properties, hydrodynamic sizes and zeta potentials are studied using different techniques. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to identify the bioactive components responsible for the reduction of Ag⁺ ions into Ag and the growth of stable Ag NPs. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy images displayed spherical and polygon nanomorphology for the intracellular and extracellular biosynthesized Ag NPs. For intracellular and extracellular biosynthesized Ag NPs, a face-centred cubic structure was observed, with average crystallite sizes of 45.4 and 90.8 nm, respectively. In comparison to the noncatalytic reduction test, the catalytic activities of intracellular and extracellular biosynthesized Ag NPs were explored for the reduction of highly concentrated MB dye solution. Extracellular Ag NPs achieved 100% MB reduction efficacy after around 80 min, compared to 50.6% and 24.1% in the presence and absence of intracellular Ag NPs, respectively. The rate of MB reduction was boosted by 22 times with the extracellular catalyst, and by 3 times with the intracellular catalyst. Therefore, the extracellular production process of Ag NPs utilizing Bacillus cereus bacteria might be applied in the industry as a cost-effective way for eliminating the toxic MB dye.

On Recent Developments in Biosynthesis and Application of Au and Ag Nanoparticles from Biological Systems

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are extensively studied nanoparticles (NPs) and are known to have profound applications in medicine. The researcher made continuous efforts for the environmental-friendly and economical methods, such as biogenic methods known as green synthesis. There are many strategies for separating and applying gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles, of which biological routes have emerged as efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly techniques. This review focuses on recent developments of green synthesized AuNPs and AgNPs using biogenic sources such as algae, animals, plants, microbes, bacteria, fungi, and so on. Hence, it discusses their numerous biomedical applications and separating Au and Ag nanoparticles from plants, bacteria, fungi, and algae.

Antibacterial activity of airborne fungal mediated nanoparticles in combination with Foeniculum vulgare essential oil

Introduction: A cost-effective and ecologically friendly method of generating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) includes pathways that utilize a variety of biological sources to decrease metal ions. This study was designed to synthesize AgNPs using a fungus strain Aspergillus flavus and evaluate its antibacterial activities alone or in combination with Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) essential oil (EO). Methods: The antibacterial activity of different concentrations of biosynthesized AgNPs by Aspergillus flavus individually and in combination with fennel EO was investigated using disc diffusion methods and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). Bacterial species, including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Shigella sp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis were tested. Results: Formation of dark brown color, ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were used for the characterization of AgNPs. Obvious synergistic effects were observed between AgNPs and EO of fennel (F. vulgare) with all tested bacteria except S. aureus, through increases in fold area of inhibition (IFAs) within the range of 0.15 to 8.87. Although S. aureus had the most susceptibility toward both AgNPs and EO of fennel (24 and 17 mm, respectively), no synergistic activity was exhibited. The best synergistic capacity resulted from AgNPs and fennel EO was observed against S. epidermidis (8.87-fold in IFA). Conclusion: This study revealed that when biosynthesized AgNPs were mixed with the EO of F. vulgare, they became more bacteriostatic and might be developed to treat bacterial infections in the future.

Biogenesis of selenium nanospheres using Halomonas venusta strain GUSDM4 exhibiting potent environmental applications

Selenite reducing bacterial strain (GUSDM4) isolated from Mandovi estuary of Goa, India was identified as Halomonas venusta based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Its maximum tolerance level for sodium selenite (Na₂SeO₃) was 100 mM. The 2, 3-diaminonaphthalene-based spectroscopic analysis demonstrated 96 and 93% reduction of 2 and 4 mM Na₂SeO₃ respectively to elemental selenium (Se⁰) during the late stationary growth phase. Biosynthesis of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) commenced within 4 h during the log phase, which was evident from the brick red color in the growth medium and a characteristic peak at 265 nm revealed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The intracellular periplasmic synthesis of SeNPs in GUSDM4 was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Characterization of SeNPs by X-ray crystallography, TEM and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) clearly demonstrated spherical SeNPs of 20-80 nm diameter with hexagonal crystal lattice. SeNPs (0.8 and 1 mg/L) primed seeds under arsenate [As(V)] stress showed increase in shoot length, root length and biomass by 1.4-, 1.5- and 1.1-fold respectively, as compared to As(V) primed seeds alone. The proline and phenolic content in seeds primed with SeNPs under arsenate stress showed alleviated levels proving its ameliorative potential. SeNPs also demonstrated anti-biofilm activity at 20 µg/mL against human pathogens which was evident by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis. SeNPs interestingly revealed mosquito larvicidal activity also. Therefore, these studies have clearly demonstrated amazing potential of the marine bacterium, Halomonas venusta in biosynthesis of SeNPs and their applications as ameliorative, anti-biofilm and mosquito larvicidal agents which is the first report of its kind.
