Abstract
OBJECTIVE Following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), children show reduced processing speed (PS). Evidence suggests that slowed PS after TBI is associated with working memory deficits. Our aim was to investigate several forms of PS and to examine its impact on working and episodic memory performance in children after mTBI. METHOD We included data of 64 children after mTBI and 57 healthy control children aged 8-16 years. PS (Color Naming, Coding, Symbol Search, Alertness) was compared between groups 1 week (T1) and 3-6 months (T2) after the injury; working and episodic memory outcome was compared between groups at T2. RESULTS Alertness at T1 and Color Naming at T1 and T2 were significantly reduced following mTBI compared to controls, although most group differences in PS disappeared when patients with previous impairments and mTBI were excluded. PS was predictive for episodic and working memory performance 3-6 months after injury, whereas group was a significant predictor of working memory. CONCLUSIONS Compared to healthy controls, children after mTBI showed reduced performance in verbal PS, which was associated with working memory. In children who are symptomatic after mTBI, diagnostic screening of PS could be helpful in identifying patients that could profit from speed-improving strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate reported burden by the Primary Family Caregiver (PFC) 7-years after severe pediatric traumatic brain injury in the TGE (Traumatisme Grave de l'Enfant) longitudinal study. METHODS Subjective burden was estimated with the Zarit Burden Inventory (ZBI) in 36 PFC (parents), who rated their own health status (Medical Outcome Study Short Form-12), family functioning and their child's level of care and needs (Pediatric/Adult Care And Needs Scale [PCANS/CANS]). Data collection included: child and PFC sociodemographic characteristics, injury-related factors, 'objective' (e.g. overall level of disability: Glasgow Outcome Scale - Extended, GOS-E/GOS-E-Peds) and 'subjective' outcomes (e.g. participation, behavior, executive functions, quality of life and fatigue). RESULTS 25% of PFC reported mild-moderate burden, and 19% moderate-severe burden. Higher burden correlated with worse outcomes in all 'subjective' PFC-rated outcomes, and with self-reported participation. The ZBI correlated strongly with CANS/PCANS and GOS-E/GOS-E-Peds. Overall level of disability and PFC-reported executive functioning explained 62% of the ZBI variance. For equal levels of disability, burden was higher when PFC reported a 'negative' picture of their child. CONCLUSION Significant PFC-reported burden 7-years post-injury was associated with overall disability and 'subjective' PFC-rated outcomes. Factors influencing parental burden in the long term should be identified and psychological support implemented over time.

Abstract
Background/Objective: Pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) survivors risk significant cognitive morbidity, particularly those with acquired brain injury (ABI) diagnoses. Studies show sedative and analgesic medication may potentiate neurologic injury, but few studies evaluate impact on survivor outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate whether exposures to analgesic and sedative medications are associated with worse neurocognitive outcome. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of 91 patients aged 8 to 18 years, undergoing clinical neurocognitive evaluation approximately 1 to 3 months after PICU discharge. Electronic health data was queried for sedative and analgesic medication exposures, including opioids, benzodiazepines, propofol, ketamine, and dexmedetomidine. Doses were converted to class equivalents, evaluated by any exposure and cumulative dose exposure per patient weight. Cognitive outcome was derived from 8 objective cognitive assessments with an emphasis on executive function skills using Principal Components Analysis. Then, linear regression was used to control for baseline cognitive function estimates to calculate a standardized residualized neurocognitive index (rNCI) z-score. Multivariable linear regression evaluated the association between rNCI and medication exposure controlling for covariates. Significance was defined as P < .05. Results: Most (n = 80; 88%) patients received 1 or more study medications. Any exposure and higher cumulative doses of benzodiazepine and ketamine were significantly associated with worse rNCI in bivariate analyses. When controlling for Medicaid, preadmission comorbid conditions, length of stay, delirium, and receipt of other medication classes, receipt of benzodiazepine was associated with significantly worse rNCI (β-coefficient = -0.48, 95% confidence interval = -0.88, -0.08). Conclusions: Exposure to benzodiazepines was independently associated with worse acute phase cognitive outcome using objective assessments focused on executive function skills when controlling for demographic and illness characteristics. Clinician decisions regarding medication regimens in the PICU may serve as a modifiable factor to improve outcomes. Additional inquiry into associations with long-term cognitive outcome and optimal medication regimens is needed.

Abstract
Effectiveness of innovative, gamified interventions (i.e., Augmented Reality, Computer-Based Cognitive Retraining [CBCR], and Virtual Reality [VR] in conjunction with a Serious Game) for cognitive training in paediatric ABI was evaluated. Studies were identified on PsycINFO, PubMed and Scopus; last searched 4 January 2022. Eligibility criteria were participants diagnosed with ABI and aged ≤ 18 years, experimental intervention to train cognition, cognition assessed pre- and post-intervention at: (1) The level of function, or (2) The level of activity, and written in English. ROB 2 and ROBINS-I were utilised to assess risk of bias. Extracted study characteristics were methods, participants, interventions, outcomes, and results. Seven studies were included, comprising six CBCR studies and one VR study, with 182 participants. Following CBCR: (1) Improvements were observed in several cognitive functions, but there was inconsistent evidence; (2) Improvements were reported in attention and executive functions (EF) at home and at school. Following VR: (1) Improvements were observed in attention and EF; (2) Not evaluated. Due to the small number of included studies with (relatively) small and heterogeneous samples, only a cautious interpretation of the evidence was provided. There is a need for carefully designed studies with more attention to inter-individual differences and generalisation to daily life.

Abstract
Impairments in cognitive processes and their associations with dimensional measures of inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity and anxiety were examined in children at risk of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Children referred by teachers for exhibiting ADHD-type problems (n = 116; 43 meeting full diagnostic criteria for ADHD; 4-8 years) completed computerized tasks measuring episodic memory, response inhibition, visuomotor control and sustained attention, while parents were interviewed (DAWBA) to assess ADHD and anxiety symptoms. Of the 116 children assessed, 72% exhibited impaired cognitive processes; 47% had impaired visuomotor control, 37% impaired response inhibition, and 35% had impaired episodic memory. Correlational and hierarchical regression analyses using our final analytic sample (i.e., children who completed all cognitive tasks and a vocabulary assessment, n = 114) showed that poorer task performance and greater within-subject variability were significantly associated with more severe inattention symptoms but not with hyperactivity-impulsivity severity. Symptoms of separation anxiety, which were reported in over half of the sample, moderated associations between inattention and episodic memory, and between inattention and inhibition. Only children without separation anxiety showed significant correlations between ADHD symptoms and poor performance. However, separation anxiety had no moderating effect on associations between inattention and visuomotor control or sustaining attention. Children exhibiting signs of ADHD show impairments across a range of cognitive tasks. Further research to improve our understanding of these processes may be useful in the development of early interventions. Our results suggest that separation anxiety should be taken into account when considering interventions to address emerging neuropsychological deficits associated with this disorder.

Abstract
Acquired brain injury (ABI) may cause fatigue and participation restrictions in young patients. However, knowledge regarding the course of these problems over time is lacking. This study aims to describe the course of fatigue and participation and their relationship over time in an observational two-year follow-up study among patients(5-24 years) with ABI referred for outpatient rehabilitation and their parents. Patients/parents completed the PedsQL™Multidimensional-Fatigue-Scale(PedsQL™MFS, totalscore/3-domains) and the Child/Adolescent-Scale of Participation(CASP, totalscore/4-domains). Scores ranged from 0-100: lower scores = more fatigue/participation problems. Linear mixed models and repeated measures correlations were used to determine the course over time (change-scores/95%CI) and correlations between fatigue/participation. At baseline, 223 patients/246 parents participated with 94/104 at either T1, T2 or both. Median age was 15 years (IQR:12-17), 74% had a traumatic brain injury. Mean(SD) patient/parent-reported PedsQL™MFS totalscores(baseline) were: 50.3(17.3) and 53.8(19.1), respectively. CASP totalscores were 78.0(16.4) and 87.1(13.6). Over time, patient-reported scores improved significantly (fatigue: + 8.8 (2.9;14.7), p < 0.05)/participation: + 10.5 (6.3;14.7), p < 0.05)). Similar results were found regarding parent-reported fatigue: + 8.7 (3.4;13.9), p < 0.05 but not regarding participation. Two years later, fatigue was still considerable(patients:59.1/parents:62.5). Moderate/fair correlations between fatigue/participation over time were found. Fatigue and participation in young patients with ABI improved two years after referral to rehabilitation. However, fatigue remained a considerable problem.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) might impair the sense of smell and cognitive functioning. Repeated, systematic exposure to odors, i.e., olfactory training (OT) has been proposed for treatment of olfactory dysfunctions, including post-traumatic smell loss. Additionally, OT has been shown to mitigate cognitive deterioration in older population and enhance selected cognitive functions in adults. We aimed to investigate olfactory and cognitive effects of OT in the pediatric population after mTBI, likely to exhibit cognitive and olfactory deficits. METHODS Our study comprised 159 children after mTBI and healthy controls aged 6-16 years (M = 9.68 ± 2.78 years, 107 males), who performed 6-months-long OT with a set of 4 either high- or low-concentrated odors. Before and after OT we assessed olfactory functions, fluid intelligence, and executive functions. RESULTS OT with low-concentrated odors increased olfactory sensitivity in children after mTBI. Regardless of health status, children who underwent OT with low-concentrated odors had higher fluid intelligence scores at post-training measurement, whereas scores of children performing OT with high-concentrated odors did not change. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that OT with low-concentrated odors might accelerate rehabilitation of olfactory sensitivity in children after mTBI and support cognitive functions in the area of fluid intelligence regardless of head trauma.

Abstract
Childhood concussion may interfere with neurodevelopment and influence cognition. Females are more likely to experience persistent symptoms after concussion, yet the sex-specific impact of concussion on brain microstructure in children is understudied. This study examined white matter and cortical microstructure, based on neurite density (ND) from diffusion-weighted MRI, in 9-to-10-year-old children in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study with (n = 336) and without (n = 7368) a history of concussion, and its relationship with cognitive performance. Multivariate regression was used to investigate relationships between ND and group, sex, and age in deep and superficial white matter, subcortical structures, and cortex. Partial least square correlation was performed to identify associations between ND and performance on NIH Toolbox tasks in children with concussion. All tissue types demonstrated higher ND with age, reflecting brain maturation. Group comparisons revealed higher ND in deep and superficial white matter in females with concussion. In female but not male children with concussion, there were significant associations between ND and performance on cognitive tests. These results demonstrate a greater long-term impact of childhood concussion on white matter microstructure in females compared to males that is associated with cognitive function. The increase in ND in females may reflect premature white matter maturation.

Abstract
Following a pediatric stroke, outcome measures selected for monitoring functional recovery and development vary widely. We sought to develop a toolkit of outcome measures that are currently available to clinicians, possess strong psychometric properties, and are feasible for use within clinical settings. A multidisciplinary group of clinicians and scientists from the International Pediatric Stroke Organization comprehensively reviewed the quality of measures in multiple domains described in pediatric stroke populations including global performance, motor and cognitive function, language, quality of life, and behavior and adaptive functioning. The quality of each measure was evaluated using guidelines focused on responsiveness and sensitivity, reliability, validity, feasibility, and predictive utility. A total of 48 outcome measures were included and were rated by experts based on the available evidence within the literature supporting the strengths of their psychometric properties and practical use. Only three measures were found to be validated for use in pediatric stroke: the Pediatric Stroke Outcome Measure, the Pediatric Stroke Recurrence and Recovery Questionnaire, and the Pediatric Stroke Quality of Life Measure. However, multiple additional measures were deemed to have good psychometric properties and acceptable utility for assessing pediatric stroke outcomes. Strengths and weaknesses of commonly used measures including feasibility are highlighted to guide evidence-based and practicable outcome measure selection. Improving the coherence of outcome assessment will facilitate comparison of studies and enhance research and clinical care in children with stroke. Further work is urgently needed to close the gap and validate measures across all clinically significant domains in the pediatric stroke population.

Abstract
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is highly prevalent in children. Recent literature suggests that children with mTBI are at considerable risk of persisting neurocognitive deficits, threatening post-injury child development. Nevertheless, clinical tools for early identification of children at risk are currently not available. This systematic review aims to describe the available literature on neurocognitive outcome prediction models in children with mTBI. Findings are highly relevant for early identification of children at risk of persistent neurocognitive deficits, allowing targeted treatment of these children to optimize recovery. The electronic literature search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane, PsychINFO and Web of Science on February 9, 2022. We included all studies with multi-variate models for neurocognitive outcome based on original data from only children (age <18 years) with mTBI. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, two authors independently performed data extraction and risk of bias analysis using the Prediction model Risk of Bias Assessment Tool (PROBAST). This systematic review identified eight original studies (nine articles) reporting prediction models for neurocognitive outcome, representing a total of 1033 children diagnosed with mTBI (mean age at injury = 10.5 years, 37.6% girls). Neurocognitive outcome assessment took place between 1 month and 7 years post-injury. Models were identified with significant predictive value for the following outcomes: memory, working memory, inhibition, processing speed, and general neurocognitive functioning. Prediction performance of these models varied greatly between weak and substantial (R2 = 10.0%-54.7%). The best performing model was based on demographic and pre-morbid risk factors in conjunction with a subacute neurocognitive screening to predict the presence of a deficit in general neurocognitive functioning at 12 months post-injury. This systematic review reflects the absence of robust prediction models for neurocognitive outcome of children with mTBI. The findings indicate that demographic factors, pre-morbid factors as well as acute and subacute clinical factors have relevance for neurocognitive outcome. Based on the available evidence, evaluation of demographic and pre-morbid risk factors in conjunction with a subacute neurocognitive screening may have the best potential to predict neurocognitive outcome in children with mTBI. The findings underline the importance of future research contributing to early identification of children at risk of persisting neurocognitive deficits.

Abstract
Youth admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for traumatic brain injury (TBI) commonly struggle with long-term residual effects in the domains of physical, cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial/family functioning. In the cognitive domain, executive functioning (EF) deficits are often observed. The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning, Second Edition (BRIEF-2) is a parent/caregiver-completed measure that is regularly utilized to assess caregivers' perspectives of daily EF abilities. Using parent/caregiver-completed measures like the BRIEF-2 in isolation as outcome measures for capturing symptom presence and severity might be problematic given that caregiver ratings are vulnerable to influence from external factors. As such, this study aimed to investigate the association between the BRIEF-2 and performance-based measures of EF in youth during the acute recovery period post-PICU admission for TBI. A secondary aim was to explore associations among potential confounding factors, including family-level distress, injury severity, and the impact of pre-existing neurodevelopmental conditions. Participants included 65 youths, 8-19 years of age, admitted to the PICU for TBI, who survived hospital discharge and were referred for follow-up care. Non-significant correlations were found between BRIEF-2 outcomes and performance-based measures of EF. Measures of injury severity were strongly correlated with scores from performance-based EF measures, but not BRIEF-2. Parent/caregiver-reported measures of their own health-related quality of life were related to caregiver responses on the BRIEF-2. Results demonstrate the differences captured by performance-based versus caregiver-report measures of EF, and also highlight the importance of considering other morbidities related to PICU admission.

Abstract
Over 50,000 children are hospitalized annually for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and face long-term cognitive morbidity. Over 50% develop sleep/wake disturbances (SWDs) that can affect brain development and healing. We hypothesized SWDs would portend worse executive function outcomes in children aged 3−18 years with TBI 1−3 months after hospital discharge. SWDs were defined using the Sleep Disturbances Scale for Children (t-scores ≥ 60). Outcomes included the Global Executive Composite (GEC, t-score) from the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Second and Preschool Editions, and multiple objective executive function assessments combined through Principal Components Analysis into a Neurocognitive Index (NCI, z-score). Multiple linear regression evaluated associations between SWDs and executive function outcomes, controlling for covariates. Among 131 children, 68% had clinically significant SWDs, which were associated with significantly worse median scores on the GEC (56 vs. 45) and NCI (−0.02 vs. 0.42; both p < 0.05). When controlling for baseline characteristics and injury severity in multivariable analyses, SWDs were associated with worse GEC (β-coefficient = 7.8; 95% Confidence Interval = 2.5, 13.1), and worse NCI (β-coefficient = −0.4; 95% Confidence Interval = −0.8, −0.04). SWDs in children with TBI are associated with worse executive function outcomes after hospital discharge, and may serve as modifiable targets to improve outcomes.

Abstract
Aims: Online awareness is an ongoing ability to monitor performance within the stream of action. It involves the ability to detect errors emerging during actual performance, as well as to anticipate potential problems. This preliminary within-subject study aimed to evaluate emergent and anticipatory online awareness among adolescents with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) during performance of motor, cognitive and functional tasks.Methods: 14 adolescents (11-18 years) following ABI were recruited. Before and after completion of the tasks, participants fulfilled task-related awareness questionnaires.Results: In the motor task, no significant correlations were found between heart rate and the subjective perceived exertion scale (emergent awareness). In the cognitive task, no significant correlations were found between the estimated difficulty before the task (anticipatory awareness) and actual performance, however a significant correlation was found between performance and the self-evaluation of performance (emergent awareness), in the easiest item of the task. In the functional task, two main patterns of online awareness were recognized: accurate and overestimation of performance.Conclusions: Online awareness deficits in adolescents after ABI, vary as a function of task characteristics. Clinicians who aim to improve online awareness should direct interventions to mainly include functional tasks, as compared to cognitive and motor tasks.

Abstract
Purpose: To increase knowledge/awareness on family impact (FI) after acquired brain injury (ABI) in rehabilitation settings, it is essential to investigate the associations between patient-functioning and impact on families. This has been explored in hospital-based cohorts, but not in rehabilitation settings.Methods: A cross-sectional, multi-center study among parents of children/young adults (aged 5-24 years) with ABI referred to rehabilitation was performed. Patient/injury/family-characteristics were noted, and parents completed the PedsQL™Family-Impact-Module and PedsQL™generic-core-4.0 to assess FI and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Univariate- and multivariable-regression analyses were performed to investigate associations between HRQoL/patient/injury/family-related factors and FI.Results: 246 families participated; patients' median age was 14 year (IQR 11-16), 65 had non-traumatic-brain-injury (nTBI) (26%), 127 were female. FI was found to be considerable (median FIM-score 71.9, IQR:60-85). Especially referral to rehabilitation >6 months after onset, diminished patients' mental/emotional health and HRQoL (child/family factors), and premorbid problems were associated with higher FI.Conclusions: In this rehabilitation cohort, pediatric ABI caused considerably higher FI than in hospital-based studies with referral to rehabilitation >6 months, diminished child/family factors and presence of premorbid problems increasing FI. Assessing and monitoring FI and its associated factors enables professionals to individualize treatment, psychoeducation, support and follow-up.

Abstract
Improving participation is an important aim in outpatient rehabilitation treatment. Knowledge regarding participation restrictions in children and young adults with acquired brain injury (ABI) is scarce and little is known regarding the differences in perspectives between patients and parents in the outpatient rehabilitation setting. The aims are to describe participation restrictions among children/young adults (5–24 years) with ABI and investigating differences between patients’ and parents’ perspectives. At admission in 10 rehabilitation centers, patients and parents were asked to complete the Child and Adolescent Scale of Participation (CASP; score 0–100; lower score = more restrictions) and injury/patient/family-related questions. CASP scores were categorized (full/somewhat-limited/limited/very-limited participation). Patient/parent-reported outcomes were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. 223 patients and 245 parents participated (209 paired-samples). Median patients’ age was 14 years (IQR; 11–16), 135 were female (52%), 195 had traumatic brain injury (75%). The median CASP score reported by patients was 82.5 (IQR: 67.5–90) and by parents 91.3 (IQR: 80.0–97.5) (difference = p < 0.05). The score of 58 patients (26%) and 25 parents (10%) was classified as ‘very-limited’. Twenty-six percent of children and young adults referred for rehabilitation after ABI had “very-limited” participation. Overall, parents rated their child’s participation better than patients themselves. Quantifying participation restrictions after ABI and considering both perspectives is important for outpatient rehabilitation treatment.

Abstract
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), is a developing public health problem. Evidence suggests that youth who suffer a mTBI experience worse outcomes than similar adults. However, the structure of long-term symptoms associated with mTBI is not well understood. The current study aims to determine if classes of youth psychopathology can be predicted by mTBI status. The current study analyzed a large sample of children and adolescents from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (n = 2978) to examine trajectories of psychopathologies. Using data from the Achenbach Childhood Behavior Checklist, latent classes of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology were identified. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine if mTBI predicted class membership, while controlling for a number of variables associated with psychopathology. The results of the current study suggest that mTBI may be an important transdiagnostic risk factor associated with developmental patterns of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects children's ability to succeed at school. Few educators have the necessary training and knowledge needed to adequately monitor and treat students with a TBI, despite schools regularly serving as the long-term service provider. In this article, we describe a return to school model used in Oregon that implements best practices indicated by the extant literature, as well as our research protocol for evaluating this model. We discuss project aims and our planned procedures, including the measures used, our quasi-experimental design using matched controls, statistical power, and impact analyses. This project will provide the evidential base for implementation of a return to school model at scale.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physiological recovery from pediatric mild traumatic brain injury (pmTBI) as a function of age remains actively debated, with the majority of studies relying on subjective symptom report rather than objective markers of brain physiology. PURPOSE To examine potential abnormalities in fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) or regional homogeniety (ReHo) during resting-state fMRI following pmTBI. STUDY TYPE Prospective cohort. POPULATION Consecutively recruited pmTBI (N = 105; 8-18 years old) and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC; N = 113). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE 3T multiecho gradient T1 -weighted and single-shot gradient-echo echo-planar imaging. ASSESSMENT All pmTBI participants were assessed 1 week and 4 months postinjury (HC assessed at equivalent timepoints after the first visit). Comprehensive demographic, clinical, and cognitive batteries were performed in addition to primary investigation of fALFF and ReHo. All pmTBI were classified as "persistent" or "recovered" based on both assessment periods. STATISTICAL TESTS Chi-square, nonparametric, and generalized linear models for demographic data. Generalized estimating equations for clinical and cognitive data. Voxelwise general linear models (AFNI's 3dMVM) for fALFF and ReHo assessment. RESULTS Evidence of recovery was observed for some, but not all, clinical and cognitive measures at 4 months postinjury. fALFF was increased in the left striatum for pmTBI relative to HC both at 1 week and 4 months postinjury; whereas no significant group differences (P > 0.001) were observed for ReHo. Age-at-injury did not moderate either resting-state metric across groups. In contrast to analyses of pmTBI as a whole, there were no significant (P > 0.001) differences in either fALFF or ReHo in patients with persistent postconcussive symptoms compared to recovered patients and controls at 4 months postinjury. DATA CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest prolonged clinical recovery and alterations in the relative amplitude of resting-state fluctuations up to 4 months postinjury, but no clear relationship with age-at-injury or subjective symptom report. Abstract
(1) Background: Memory deficits are common sequelae of pediatric Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). Only methods for non-focused cognitive remediation are available to the pediatric field. The aims of this feasibility trial are the description, implementation, and test of an intensive program specific to the training and re-adaptation of memory function in children, called Intensive Memory-Focused Training Program (IM-FTP); (2) Methods: Eleven children and adolescents with ABI (mean age at injury = 12.2 years, brain tumor survivors excluded) were clinically assessed and rehabilitated over 1-month through IM-FTP, including physio-kinesis/occupational, speech, and neuropsychology treatments. Each patient received a psychometric evaluation and a brain functional MRI at enrollment and at discharge. Ten pediatric controls with ABI (mean age at injury = 13.8 years) were clinically assessed, and rehabilitated through a standard program; (3) Results: After treatment, both groups had marked improvement in both immediate and delayed recall. IM-FTP was associated with better learning of semantically related and unrelated words, and larger improvement in immediate recall in prose memory. Imaging showed functional modification in the left frontal inferior cortex; (4) Conclusions: We described an age-independent reproducible multidisciplinary memory-focused rehabilitation protocol, which can be adapted to single patients while preserving inter-subject comparability, and is applicable up to a few months after injury. IM-FTP will now be employed in a powered clinical trial.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the association between fatigue and participation and QoL after acquired brain injury (ABI) in adolescents and young adults (AYAs). MATERIALS & METHODS Cross-sectional study with AYAs aged 14-25 years, diagnosed with ABI. The PedsQL™ Multidimensional Fatigue Scale, Child & Adolescent Scale of Participation, and PedsQL™4.0 Generic Core Scales were administered. RESULTS Sixty-four AYAs participated in the study, 47 with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Median age at admission was 17.6 yrs, 0.8 yrs since injury. High levels of fatigue (median 44.4 (IQR 34.7, 59.7)), limited participation (median 82.5 (IQR 68.8, 92.3)), and diminished QoL (median 63.0 (IQR 47.8, 78.3)) were reported. More fatigue was significantly associated with more participation restrictions (β 0.64, 95%CI 0.44, 0.85) and diminished QoL (β 0.87, 95%CI 0.72, 1.02). CONCLUSIONS AYAs with ABI reported high levels of fatigue, limited participation and diminished quality of life with a significant association between fatigue and both participation and QoL. Targeting fatigue in rehabilitation treatment could potentially improve participation and QoL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Opportunities to participate in daily life have improved considerably for children with chronic disease. Nevertheless, they still face challenges associated with their ever-present illness affecting every aspect of their lives. To best help these children, we aimed to assess the child's own perspective on participation and the main considerations that affect participation in a stable phase of disease. METHODS Qualitative study design was applied. Semistructured, indepth interviews were conducted and analysed by a general inductive approach using constant comparison, coding and categorisation. Children 8-18 years old with a chronic disease were recruited from a cohort study involving cystic fibrosis, autoimmune disease and post-treatment paediatric cancer. RESULTS 31 of the 56 (55%) invited patients participated. From the perspective of children with chronic disease, participation is considered more than merely engaging in activities; rather, they view having a sense of belonging, the ability to affect social interactions and the capacity to keep up with peers as key elements of full participation. Some children typically placed a higher priority on participation, whereas other children typically placed a higher priority on their current and/or future needs, both weighing the costs and benefits of their choices and using disclosure as a strategy. CONCLUSIONS Enabling full participation from the child's perspective will help realise patient-centred care, ultimately helping children self-manage their participation. Caregivers can stimulate this participation by evaluating with children how to achieve a sense of belonging, active involvement and a role within a peer group. This requires active collaboration between children, healthcare providers and caregivers.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To provide a summary of recent developments in the field of paediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). RECENT FINDINGS The epidemiology of paediatric TBI with falling rates of severe TBI, and increasing presentations of apparently minor TBI. There is growing interest in the pathophysiology and outcomes of concussion in children, and detection of 'significant' injury, arising from concern about risks of long-term chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The role of decompressive craniectomy in children is still clarifying. SUMMARY Paediatric TBI remains a major public health issue.

Abstract
Objective To explore participation in social roles of adolescents (aged 12-18y) with cerebral palsy (CP), in terms of satisfaction compared with accomplishment. Design Cohort study as part of a prospective longitudinal research program. Setting Clinic. Participants Participants were adolescents (N=45; 58% male, mean age 15y 6mo) with CP at levels I-II (88%) and III-IV-V (12%) of the Gross Motor Function Classification System. Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures Accomplishment (0-9 scale; with score <8 “having difficulties”) and satisfaction (1-5 scale; with score 3 “neutral”) were assessed using the Life-Habits questionnaire, on 6 domains (Responsibilities, Interpersonal relationships, Community life, Education, Employment, Recreation). Per domain, we analyzed scatterplots of accomplishment vs satisfaction. Additionally, we compared determinant-models (including factors of CP, activity, person, and environment) using regression analysis. Results For accomplishment, mean scores were <8.00 except for Interpersonal relationships. For satisfaction, mean scores varied between 3.85 and 4.34. Overall, individuals with similar levels of accomplishment showed large ranges in their levels of satisfaction, which was expressed by low explained variances, especially on Education (6%). Furthermore, different sets of determinants were found for accomplishment (predominantly CP factors) compared with satisfaction (predominantly environment factors). Conclusions This study revealed a dissociation between participation accomplishment and satisfaction with participation among adolescents with CP. For practice and research, we recommend not only to focus on accomplishment but also, if not mainly, on satisfaction.

Abstract
The aims of this study were (1) to prospectively measure memory functioning following severe childhood Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and its evolution over 2 years; (2) to assess demographic and medical factors associated with memory function and recovery; (3) to explore relations between memory and other TBI outcomes. Methods: Children (aged 0-15 years; n= 65) consecutively admitted in a single trauma center over a 3-year period, who survived severe non-inflicted TBI, were included in a prospective longitudinal study. Memory was assessed in 38 children aged 5-15 years at injury, using the Children's Memory Scale at 3, 12, and 24 months post-injury. Results: Mean general memory score was low at 3 months (M = 90.2, SD = 20.3) but within the normal range at 12 and 24 months (M = 100.6, SD = 23.1 and M = 108.6, SD = 24.1, respectively), with high variability. Improvement was stronger for immediate visual memory than for other memory indices. Lower general memory score was associated with higher injury severity, lower intellectual ability and functional status, higher overall disability, and ongoing education. Conclusion: Memory functioning is highly variable following severe childhood TBI, related to injury severity and functional, cognitive and educational outcomes; improvement is significant during the first-year post-injury, but varies according to the type of memory.

Abstract
Background: Research following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) during childhood predominantly examines recovery up to 12 months post-injury. Objectives: To determine children's longer-term (4 years) patterns and predictors of recovery. Methods: Parents of 196 children (aged 1-15 years) completed the Behaviour Assessment System for Children and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory at baseline, 1, 6, 12, and 48 months post-injury. Children aged ≥8 years at each assessment completed a computerized neurocognitive testing battery. At 1 month, parents completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Multilevel modeling accounted for repeated measures. Results: Children had significantly fewer child behavior problems, better adaptability, and improved quality of life after 12 months. Concurrent improvements in overall neurocognitive function were no longer significant once adjusted for age, gender, and socio-economic status. From 12 to 48 months, quality of life reduced significantly while child behavior and neurocognition plateaued. Child behavior problems and worse quality of life were associated with parental anxiety and lower socio-economic status. Conclusions: Children's recovery in the year following mTBI appears to plateau from 12 to 48 months, with a concomitant reduction in quality of life. Identification and treatment of parent mental health issues may reduce the exacerbation of negative child outcomes following mTBI.
