Review of the current state and main sources of dioxins around the world

Global dioxin research trends and focal points: A century-long visual and bibliometric analysis (1923-2022)

Dioxin-like compounds, recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as among the most enduring toxic chemical substances in the environment, are linked to various occupational activities and industrial accidents worldwide. The aim of this study was to examine and present research publications on dioxins, pinpoint current research trends, identify research gaps, and highlight potential avenues for future exploration in the field. The study period for relevant research articles ranged from 1923 to December 31, 2022, and these articles were sourced from the Scopus database. The analysis involved the identification of key contributors to the field and the visualization of topics, themes, and international collaboration. VOSviewer software (version 1.6.20) was used for visualization analysis. A total of 11,620 publications on dioxins were documented in the Scopus database. The predominant category of these documents comprised 9780 original articles, which represents 84.17% of the total publications. The United States lead in the number of publications, with 3992 (34.35%), followed by Japan, with 1429 (12.3%), China, with 1005 (8.65%), and Germany, with 974 (8.38%). Before 2002, scholarly attention in this field focused primarily on the health effects, environmental fate, and mechanism of toxicity of tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). However, a noticeable change in research focus has been observed since 2002, highlighting the emergence of a topic related to the health effects and environmental fate of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PFDFs). This study is the first to conduct a comprehensive quantitative bibliometric analysis of dioxins over time. These findings indicate a significant increase in the overall growth of the dioxin literature over the past 30 years. These findings may prove crucial in guiding and organizing subsequent investigations related to dioxins.

Atmospheric Concentrations and Potential Sources of Dioxin-Like Contaminants to Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park (ANP) is located on Mt. Desert Island, ME on the U.S. Atlantic coast. ANP is routinely a top-ten most popular National Park with over four million visits in 2022. The overall contribution and negative effects of long-range atmospheric transport and local sources of dioxin-like contaminants endangering natural and wildlife resources is unknown. Dioxin-like (DL) contaminants polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (∑PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (∑PCDF), non-ortho coplanar PCBs (∑CP4), and polychlorinated naphthalenes (∑PCNs) were measured at the McFarland Hill air monitoring station (44.37⁰N, 68.26⁰W). On a mass/volume basis, total PCNs averaged 90.9 % (788 fg/m3) of DL contaminants measured annually, with 92.9 % of the collected total in the vapor-phase. Alternatively, total dioxin/furans (∑PCDD/Fs) represented 71.6 % of the total toxic equivalence (∑TEQ) (1.018 fg-TEQ/m3), with 69.7 % in the particulate-phase. Maximum concentrations measured for individual sampling events for ∑PCDD/F, ∑CP4, and ∑PCN were 159 (winter), 139 (summer), and 2100 (autumn), fg/m3 respectively. Whereas the maximum ∑TEQ concentrations for individual sampling events for ∑PCDD/F, ∑CP4, and ∑PCN were 2.8 (autumn), 0.38 (summer), and 0.71 (autumn), fg-TEQ/m3 respectively. Pearson correlations were calculated for ∑PCDD/Fs and ∑PCN particulate/vapor-phase air concentrations and PM2.5 wood smoke "indicator" species. The most significant correlations were observed in autumn for particulate-phase ∑PCDD/Fs suggesting a relationship between visitation-generated combustion sources (campfires and/or waste burning) or climate-change mediated forest fires. Significant Clausius-Clapeyron (C-C) correlations observed for particulate-phase ∑PCDDs (r2=0.567) as ambient temperatures decreased suggests a connection between localized domestic heating sources or visitor-based burning of wood/trash resources. Alternatively, highly significant C-C vapor-phase ∑CP4-PCBs correlations (r2=0.815) implies that the majority of ∑CP4-PCB loading to ANP is from long-range atmospheric transport processes. Based on these findings, Acadia National Park should be classified as a remote site with minor depositional impacts from ∑PCDD/Fs, ∑CP4-PCBs, and ∑PCN atmospheric transport or local diffuse sources.

The Impact of the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor on Antenatal Chemical Exposure-Induced Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Programming

Early life exposure lays the groundwork for the risk of developing cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome in adulthood. Various environmental chemicals to which pregnant mothers are commonly exposed can disrupt fetal programming, leading to a wide range of CKM phenotypes. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) has a key role as a ligand-activated transcription factor in sensing these environmental chemicals. Activating AHR through exposure to environmental chemicals has been documented for its adverse impacts on cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, kidney disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as evidenced by both epidemiological and animal studies. In this review, we compile current human evidence and findings from animal models that support the connection between antenatal chemical exposures and CKM programming, focusing particularly on AHR signaling. Additionally, we explore potential AHR modulators aimed at preventing CKM syndrome. As the pioneering review to present evidence advocating for the avoidance of toxic chemical exposure during pregnancy and deepening our understanding of AHR signaling, this has the potential to mitigate the global burden of CKM syndrome in the future.

Health assessment of emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in PM2.5 in northern and central Taiwan

Over the last two decades, Taiwan has effectively diminished atmospheric concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) through the adept utilization of advanced technologies and the implementation of air pollution control devices. Despite this success, there exists a dearth of data regarding the levels of other PM2.5-bound organic pollutants and their associated health risks. To address this gap, our study comprehensively investigates the spatial and seasonal variations, potential sources, and health risks of PCDD/Fs, Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and Polychlorinated naphthalene (PCNs) in Northern and Central Taiwan. Sampling collections were conducted at three specific locations, including six municipal waste incinerators in Northern Taiwan, as well as a traffic and an industrial site in Central Taiwan. As a result, the highest mean values of PM2.5 (20.3-39.6 μg/m3) were observed at traffic sites, followed by industrial sites (14.4-39.3 μg/m3), and the vicinity of the municipal waste incinerator (12.4-29.4 μg/m3). Additionally, PCDD/Fs and PCBs exhibited discernible seasonal fluctuations, displaying higher concentrations in winter (7.53-11.9 and 0.09-0.12 fg I-TEQWHO/m3) and spring (7.02-13.7 and 0.11-0.16 fg I-TEQWHO/m3) compared to summer and autumn. Conversely, PCNs displayed no significant seasonal variations, with peak values observed in winter (0.05-0.10 fg I-TEQWHO/m3) and spring (0.03-0.08 fg I-TEQWHO/m3). Utilizing a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, sintering plants emerged as the predominant contributors to PCDD/Fs, constituting 77.9% of emissions. Woodchip boilers (68.3%) and municipal waste incinerators (21.0%) were identified as primary contributors to PCBs, while municipal waste incinerators (64.6%) along with a secondary copper and a copper sludge smelter (22.1%) were the principal sources of PCNs. Moreover, the study specified that individuals aged 19-70 in Northern Taiwan and those under the age of 12 years in Central Taiwan were found to have a significantly higher cancer risk, with values ranging from 9.26 x 10-9-1.12 x 10-7 and from 2.50 x 10-8-2.08 x 10-7respectively.

Human health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds in oil-based drill cuttings of shale gas

Waste oil-based drill cuttings contain dioxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have the potential to cause serious health effects in humans. Therefore, this paper took oil-based drill cuttings (OBDCs) as the research object and carried out the testing of VOCs and dioxins content by using GC-MS and HRGCS-HRMS and comprehensively evaluated the content, composition and distribution pattern of VOCs and dioxins and the risk to human health posed by the two pollutants in OBDCs. The results showed that the VOCs did not exceed the emission limits in ESPPI (GB 31571-2015), but it is vital to recognise that 1,2-dichloropropane has the potential to cause cancer risk, with soil and groundwater risk control values of 662.95 mg·kg-1 and 0.066 mg·kg-1, respectively. Benzene, 1,2-dichloropropane and 8 other VOCs pose a non-carcinogenic risk to humans. The levels of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) exceeded those of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), which accounted for 95.76 percent of the total PCDD/Fs, 2,3,4,7,8-P5CDF (56.00%), 2,3,7,8-T4CDF (9.20%), 1,2,3,6,7,8-H6CDF (8.80%) and 1,2,3,7,8-P5CDF (8.00%) were the main contributing monomers. The findings of the assessment on exposure risk indicate that there is a respiratory risk to oil-based drill cuttings dioxins for adults and children exceeded the World Health Organisation (WHO) acceptable daily intake (ADI) (1-4 pgTEQ/kg/d). Finally, three aspects of solid waste pre-treatment prior to incineration, the incineration process and post incineration were used to reduce the environmental and human health risks from dioxins.

Exposure to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist dioxin disrupts formation of the muscle, nerves, and vasculature in the developing jaw

Human exposure to environmental pollutants can disrupt embryonic development and impact juvenile and adult health outcomes by adversely affecting cell and organ function. Notwithstanding, environmental contamination continues to increase due to industrial development, insufficient regulations, and the mobilization of pollutants as a result of extreme weather events. Dioxins are a class of structurally related persistent organic pollutants that are highly toxic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic. 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is the most potent dioxin compound and has been shown to induce toxic effects in developing organisms by activating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), a ligand activated transcription factor targeted by multiple persistent organic pollutants. Contaminant-induced AHR activation results in malformations of the craniofacial cartilages and neurocranium; however, the mechanisms mediating these phenotypes are not well understood. In this study, we utilized the optically transparent zebrafish model to elucidate novel cellular targets and potential transcriptional targets underlying TCDD-induced craniofacial malformations. To this end, we exposed zebrafish embryos at 4 h post fertilization to TCDD and employed a mixed-methods approach utilizing immunohistochemistry staining, transgenic reporter lines, fixed and in vivo confocal imaging, and timelapse microscopy to determine the targets mediating TCDD-induced craniofacial phenotypes. Our data indicate that embryonic TCDD exposure reduced jaw and pharyngeal arch Sox10+ chondrocytes and Tcf21+ pharyngeal mesoderm progenitors. Exposure to TCDD correspondingly led to a reduction in collagen type II deposition in Sox10+ domains. Embryonic TCDD exposure impaired development of tissues derived from or guided by Tcf21+ progenitors, namely: nerves, muscle, and vasculature. Specifically, TCDD exposure disrupted development of the hyoid and mandibular arch muscles, decreased neural innervation of the jaw, resulted in compression of cranial nerves V and VII, and led to jaw vasculature malformations. Collectively, these findings reveal novel structural targets and potential transcriptional targets of TCDD-induced toxicity, showcasing how contaminant exposures lead to congenital craniofacial malformations.

Mechanisms of breast cancer progression induced by environment-polluting aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonists

Breast cancer is the most common invasive malignancy among women worldwide and constitutes a complex and heterogeneous disease. Interest has recently grown in the role of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in breast cancer and the contribution of environment-polluting AhR agonists. Here, we present a literature review addressing AhR ligands, including pesticides hexachlorobenzene and chlorpyrifos, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, polychlorinated biphenyls, parabens, and phthalates. The objectives of this review are a) to summarize recent original experimental, preclinical, and clinical studies on the biological mechanisms of AhR agonists which interfere with the regulation of breast endocrine functions, and b) to examine the biological effects of AhR ligands and their impact on breast cancer development and progression. We discuss biological mechanisms of action in cell viability, cell cycle, proliferation, epigenetic changes, epithelial to mesenchymal transition, and cell migration and invasion. In addition, we examine the effects of AhR ligands on angiogenic processes, metastasis, chemoresistance, and stem cell renewal. We conclude that exposure to AhR agonists stimulates pathways that promote breast cancer development and may contribute to tumor progression. Given the massive use of industrial and agricultural chemicals, ongoing evaluation of their effects in laboratory assays and preclinical studies in breast cancer at environmentally relevant doses is deemed essential. Likewise, awareness should be raised in the population regarding the most harmful toxicants to eradicate or minimize their use.

Thermal Phase Transition and Rapid Degradation of Forever Chemicals (PFAS) in Spent Media Using Induction Heating

In this study, we have developed an innovative thermal degradation strategy for treating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS)-containing solid materials. Our strategy satisfies three criteria: the ability to achieve near-complete degradation of PFASs within a short timescale, nonselectivity, and low energy cost. In our method, a metallic reactor containing a PFAS-laden sample was subjected to electromagnetic induction that prompted a rapid temperature rise of the reactor via the Joule heating effect. We demonstrated that subjecting PFASs (0.001-12 μmol) to induction heating for a brief duration (e.g., <40 s) resulted in substantial degradation (>90%) of these compounds, including recalcitrant short-chain PFASs and perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids. This finding prompted us to conduct a detailed study of the thermal phase transitions of PFASs using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). We identified at least two endothermic DSC peaks for anionic, cationic, and zwitterionic PFASs, signifying the melting and evaporation of the melted PFASs. Melting and evaporation points of many PFASs were reported for the first time. Our data suggest that the rate-limiting step in PFAS thermal degradation is linked with phase transitions (e.g., evaporation) occurring on different time scales. When PFASs are rapidly heated to temperatures similar to those produced during induction heating, the evaporation of melted PFAS slows down, allowing for the degradation of the melted PFAS.

Historical production and release inventory of PCDD/Fs in China and projections upon policy options by 2025

Using the source identification and classification methodology described in UNEP standardized toolkit for dioxin releases, combined with research data over the past decade, the production and release of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) from 6 major sectors in China were inventoried from 2003 to 2020, and were projected until 2025 based on current control measures and relevant industrial plans. The results showed that after ratification of the Stockholm Convention, China's production and release of PCDD/Fs began to decline after peaking in 2007, demonstrating the effectiveness of preliminary control measures. However, the continual expansion of manufacturing and energy sectors, along with the lack of compatible production control technology, reversed the declining trend of production after 2015. Meanwhile, the environmental release continued to decrease, but at a slower rate after 2015. If subject to current policies, production and release would remain elevated with an expanding gap in between. This study also established the congener inventories, revealing the significance of OCDF and OCDD in terms of both production and release, and that of PeCDF and TCDF in terms of environmental impacts. Lastly, through comparison with other developed countries and regions, it was concluded that room for further reduction exists, but can only be achieved through strengthened regulations and improved control measures.

Exposure to the persistent organic pollutant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD, dioxin) disrupts development of the zebrafish inner ear

Dioxins are a class of highly toxic and persistent environmental pollutants that have been shown through epidemiological and laboratory-based studies to act as developmental teratogens. 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), the most potent dioxin congener, has a high affinity for the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), a ligand activated transcription factor. TCDD-induced AHR activation during development impairs nervous system, cardiac, and craniofacial development. Despite the robust phenotypes previously reported, the characterization of developmental malformations and our understanding of the molecular targets mediating TCDD-induced developmental toxicity remains limited. In zebrafish, TCDD-induced craniofacial malformations are produced, in part, by the downregulation of SRY-box transcription factor 9b (sox9b), a member of the SoxE gene family. sox9b, along with fellow SoxE gene family members sox9a and sox10, have important functions in the development of the otic placode, the otic vesicle, and, ultimately, the inner ear. Given that sox9b is a known target of TCDD and that transcriptional interactions exist among SoxE genes, we asked whether TCDD exposure impaired the development of the zebrafish auditory system, specifically the otic vesicle, which gives rise to the sensory components of the inner ear. Using immunohistochemistry, in vivo confocal imaging, and time-lapse microscopy, we assessed the impact of TCDD exposure on zebrafish otic vesicle development. We found exposure resulted in structural deficits, including incomplete pillar fusion and altered pillar topography, leading to defective semicircular canal development. The observed structural deficits were accompanied by reduced collagen type II expression in the ear. Together, our findings reveal the otic vesicle as a novel target of TCDD-induced toxicity, suggest that the function of multiple SoxE genes may be affected by TCDD exposure, and provide insight into how environmental contaminants contribute to congenital malformations.

Utility of an alternative method (to USEPA Method 1613) for analysis of priority persistent organic pollutants in soil from mixed industrial-suburban areas of Durban, South Africa

This study evaluates the adequacy of a USEPA Method 1613 alternative analytical method for analysis of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in soil from the immediate vicinity of industrialized areas in the eThekwini municipal area in South Africa. The objective of this study is in line with the Stockholm Convention Article 11 on research, development, and monitoring. Furthermore, it became imperative to find an alternative analytical procedure to USEPA Method 1613 that could cater to studies conducted in Africa where recent reviews have indicated that most African countries lack the technical and instrumental capacity for performing analysis of dioxin-like compounds according to USEPA Method 1613, which entails the use of high-resolution chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry instrumentation. The study aimed to ascertain the utility of an alternative two-dimensional gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry method for analysis of trace-level priority POPs in soil, along with a fast single quadrupole gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method. The analytical methods were applied to the analysis of POPs on soil samples from industrial areas with oil refineries and a pulp and paper manufacturing company, while other samples were collected near the electricity substations and a landfill site. Analytical results showed BDE 209 as the dominant contaminating polybrominated diphenyl ether (concentration ranges from 0.006 to 5.71 ng g^-1 ). Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) 9, 10, and 49 were the dominant PBBs detected in 78% of the sites tested, although their concentrations were below the limit of quantification (LOQ). Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls detected could not be quantified above their respective LOQs, indicating that the Durban area has low priority pollutant contamination levels compared to other regions around the world. The methods developed are a starting point that will inform considerations for routine evaluation and management of soil contamination, which plays a vital role in environmental management. Levels, enrichment characteristics and dietary intake risk of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/furans in traditional smoked pork

The concentrations and TEQs of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/furans (PCDD/Fs) in traditional smoked pork were significantly higher than those in raw pork, and mainly distributed in the surface layer. The main enriched congeners during traditional smoking were 2378-TCDF, 12378-PeCDF, 23478-PeCDF, 1234678-HpCDF, OCDF, 1234678-HpCDD and OCDD. The ability of each congener to transfer from the surface to the inner part was various. According to the dietary habits of local residents, PCDD/Fs in more than half of the traditional smoked pork samples posed a potential carcinogenic risk, and the risk in the surface samples were 1.02-10.2 times that of the corresponding inner samples. Some variables might be the important factors affecting the concentration of PCDD/Fs in smoked pork, such as the duration of smoking and the kind of fuel. It is recommended to achieve lower risk by reducing the consumption of smoked pork, especially the surface layer of smoked pork, and innovating traditional smoking technologies.

Environmental and health impacts assessment of long-term naturally-weathered municipal solid waste incineration ashes deposited in soil-old burden in Bratislava city, Slovakia

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) is an effective method for reducing the volume/mass of waste. However, MSWI ashes contain high concentrations of many substances, including trace metal (loid)s, that could be released into the environment and contaminate soils and groundwater. In this study, attention was focused on the site near the municipal solid waste incinerator where MSWI ashes are deposited on the surface without any control. Here, combined results (chemical and mineralogical analyses, leaching tests, speciation modelling, groundwater chemistry and human health risk assessment) are presented to assess the impact of MSWI ash on the surrounding environment. The mineralogy of ∼forty years old MSWI ash was diverse, and quartz, calcite, mullite, apatite, hematite, goethite, amorphous glasses and several Cu-bearing minerals (e.g. malachite, brochantite) were commonly detected. In general, the total concentrations of metal (loid)s in MSWI ashes were high, following the order: Zn (6731 mg/kg) > Ba (1969 mg/kg) ≈ Mn (1824 mg/kg) > Cu (1697 mg/kg) > Pb (1453 mg/kg) > Cr (247 mg/kg) > Ni (132 mg/kg) > Sb (59.4 mg/kg) > As (22.9 mg/kg) ≈ Cd (20.6 mg/kg). Cadmium, Cr, Cu, Pb, Sb and Zn exceeded the indication or even intervention criteria for industrial soils defined by the Slovak legislation. Batch leaching experiments with diluted citric and oxalic acids that simulate the leaching of chemical elements under rhizosphere conditions documented low dissolved fractions of metals (0.00-2.48%) in MSWI ash samples, showing their high geochemical stability. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were below the threshold values of 1.0 and 1 × 10^-6, respectively, with soil ingestion being the most important exposure route for workers. The groundwater chemistry was unaffected by deposited MSWI ashes. This study may be useful in determining the environmental risks of trace metal (loid)s in weathered MSWI ashes that are loosely deposited on the soil surface.

Source apportionment of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in the sediments of an urban estuary

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in the sediments of aquatic systems are a persistent global problem that poses serious health risks. Identifying the sources of dioxins in natural water systems and the extent of their contributions to observed sediment concentrations is important from a health advisory and mitigation perspective. This paper proposes novel distribution-based qualitative and quantitative methods as source apportionment techniques and alternatives to conventional source attribution methods. Using sampled data, air, runoff, industrial effluent, and industrial paper and pulp wastes were identified as four distinct dioxin contributors to concentrations found in the sediments of the test bed region: the Houston Ship Channel-San Jacinto River-Galveston Bay (HSC-SJR-GB) estuarine system that also includes 2 Superfund sites with dioxin contamination. Two qualitative methods, the Kullback-Leibler divergence (K-L divergence) and the Bhattacharya measure (BM), and a quantitative method, the L₂ norm, were used to investigate the spatial and temporal sourcing patterns of dioxins in the system sediments. The results indicated a global contribution from air and runoff sources across the estuarine system and over time with more localized impacts of the Superfund sites and the industrial sources. The results using the developed methodologies were compared with the output from the more conventional positive matrix factorization (PMF) method. Statistically significant correlations were observed among source contributions from the proposed methods and the PMF method, with Spearman's ρ ranging between - 0.596 to - 0.963 and 0.652 to 0.719, demonstrating the utility of the sourcing approaches used in the study. Additionally, the proposed methods were found to be rigorous in terms of elucidating spatial and temporal changes in the sourcing of dioxin to the estuary, indicating their suitability for use for other contaminants and other estuarine systems.

Serum levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans in a sample of Lebanese pregnant women: The role of dietary, anthropometric, and environmental factors

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are unintentionally produced, toxic environmental chemicals that persist for long years and bioaccumulate along the food chain, contaminating humans through diet. A particularly critical population subgroup is pregnant women given the adverse health effects on fetuses and newborns. Several anthropogenic sources of exposure to PCDD/Fs exist in Lebanon. Therefore, the aim of the present cross-sectional study is to measure the levels of PCDD/Fs in a sample of pregnant women in Lebanon and to explore potential associated factors. In this study, we measured serum concentrations of seven dioxins and ten furans, among 423 pregnant women recruited at delivery, using gas chromatography MS/MS. Among 269 participants, maternal sociodemographic information was collected including vicinity to landfills, incineration, pesticide use, industrial activity, and smoking. Anthropometric data were registered regarding pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), pre-pregnancy weight loss from restrictive diet, and gestational weight gain. Intake of major food groups generally related to PCDD/Fs was reported (fish, red meat, poultry, and dairy). Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify associations. PCDD/Fs were detected in 0 to 56.1% of the sample. Geometric mean concentrations were 75.5 (2.35) pg/g lipid and 2.25 (1.39) TEQ₂₀₀₅ pg/g lipid for total dioxins, and 2.66 (1.76) pg/g lipid and 0.34 (1.78) TEQ₂₀₀₅ pg/g lipid for total furans. Levels were relatively lower than levels previously observed in France, Germany, Mexico, Ghana, and Japan. Red meat consumption was the most consistently associated factor with a 2.38-2.57 fold increase in PCDD/F levels. Pre-pregnancy weight loss showed inverse associations with PCDD/F congeners. Vicinity to illegal incineration was also associated with a 2.32-2.43 fold increase in PCDD/F levels. In conclusion, results showed the importance of dietary, anthropometric, and environmental factors in the present sample's exposure to PCDD/Fs, in a region that contains anthropogenic sources of contamination.

Influence of iron ore properties on dioxin emissions during iron ore sintering

Iron ores are principal input materials for iron and steel-making industries. Quality of iron ores is one of the critical parameters for formation of environmental pollutants related to the steel-making process. Dioxins are identified as one of the most toxic pollutants emitted during ironmaking, specifically during the sintering process. This study applied four types of iron ores and analyzed their moisture, density, particle size distribution and element concentrations to investigate their effect on the dioxin formation during sintering. Each type of iron ore was processed in a sinter pot grate. During each processing route, exhausted dust and generated sinter products were collected and subjected to PCDD/F and PCB analysis. Statistical analysis was applied to assess correlations between properties of iron ores and exhausted dioxin emissions, identifying key contributors to dioxin formation during sintering process. Results showed that Fe in iron ores was positively and significantly related to PCB 114 formation in dust and confirmed its co-catalytic effect on dioxin formation. Concentrations of Al, Ti and Cl in iron ores greatly increased PCDD/F and PCB emissions in the sintered products compared to dioxins in dust samples. The S levels and density of iron ores were highly related to the increasing PCDD/F and PCB emissions in both sinter and dust samples. By contrast, concentrations of Si in iron ores played a significant role in decreasing PCDD/F and PCB emissions in both sinter and dust samples. This study also confirmed the optimum size (< 1 mm-2.59 mm) for iron ores, which helps reduce dioxin emissions without affecting the quality of iron and steel-making products.

A Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) Modeling Framework for Mixtures of Dioxin-like Compounds

Humans are exposed to persistent organic pollutants, such as dioxin-like compounds (DLCs), as mixtures. Understanding and predicting the toxicokinetics and thus internal burden of major constituents of a DLC mixture is important for assessing their contributions to health risks. PBPK models, including dioxin models, traditionally focus on one or a small number of compounds; developing new or extending existing models for mixtures often requires tedious, error-prone coding work. This lack of efficiency to scale up for multi-compound exposures is a major technical barrier toward large-scale mixture PBPK simulations. Congeners in the DLC family, including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), share similar albeit quantitatively different toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic properties. Taking advantage of these similarities, here we reported the development of a human PBPK modeling framework for DLC mixtures that can flexibly accommodate an arbitrary number of congeners. Adapted from existing TCDD models, our mixture model contains the blood and three diffusion-limited compartments-liver, fat, and rest of the body. Depending on the number of congeners in a mixture, varying-length vectors of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are automatically generated to track the tissue concentrations of the congeners. Shared ODEs are used to account for common variables, including the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) and CYP1A2, to which the congeners compete for binding. Binary and multi-congener mixture simulations showed that the AHR-mediated cross-induction of CYP1A2 accelerates the sequestration and metabolism of DLC congeners, resulting in consistently lower tissue burdens than in single exposure, except for the liver. Using dietary intake data to simulate lifetime exposures to DLC mixtures, the model demonstrated that the relative contributions of individual congeners to blood or tissue toxic equivalency (TEQ) values are markedly different than those to intake TEQ. In summary, we developed a mixture PBPK modeling framework for DLCs that may be utilized upon further improvement as a quantitative tool to estimate tissue dosimetry and health risks of DLC mixtures.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of cancer risks in relation to environmental waste incinerator emissions: a meta-analysis of case-control and cohort studies

OBJECTIVES

Various toxic substances can be generated from incinerators, exposing nearby residents, and epidemiological studies have shown wide variations in risk estimates for cancer risk in populations living close to incinerators.

METHODS

Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a literature search and systematic review were conducted to identify studies conducted on general populations exposed to environmental incinerator emissions and cancer outcomes. Meta-analysis was performed according to the cancer types for which 2 or more studies were reported. Subgroup analysis was done for sex, the exposure estimation method, the study period, and the type of outcome.

RESULTS

Eleven studies were found for the qualitative review and meta-analysis. Seven studies had a case-control design, and 4 had a cohort design. The pooled effect size was not significant for breast, colorectal, liver, lung, lymphohematopoietic, stomach, bladder, central nervous system, and laryngeal cancers, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, sarcoma, leukemia, and all cancers. In the subgroup analysis, the pooled effect size of laryngeal cancer in females was 1.82 (95% confidence interval, 1.10 to 3.01), although only 2 studies were identified.

CONCLUSIONS

The meta-analysis did not provide evidence of an increased risk for any cancer among populations living near waste incinerators, except for laryngeal cancer in females. However, since relatively few studies were reviewed and some cancer types showed significant increases in individual studies, this evidence needs to be updated regularly.

The first quantitative investigation of compounds generated from PFAS, PFAS-containing aqueous film-forming foams and commercial fluorosurfactants in pyrolytic processes

Pyrolysis as a thermochemical technology is commonly used in waste management and remediation of organic-contaminated soil. This study, for the first time, investigated fluorinated and non-fluorinated compounds emitted from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and relevant products upon pyrolysis (200-890 °C) and their formation mechanisms. Approximately 30 non-fluorinated compounds were detected from PFAS-containing aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) and commercial surfactant concentrates (SCs) after heating, including glycols and glycol ethers that were predominant at 200 °C. Oxygen (e.g., 1,4-dioxane) and nitrogen heterocycles and benzene were unexpectedly observed at higher temperatures (300-890 °C), which were likely formed as a consequence of the thermal dehydration, dehydrogenation, and intermolecular cyclization of glycols and glycol ethers. Fluorinated volatiles in six major classes were detected at low and moderate temperatures (200-500 °C), including perfluoroalkenes, perfluoroalkyl aldehydes, fluorotelomer alcohols, and polyfluorinated alkanes/alkenes. Several features of the pyrolyses of PFAS suggest that the underlying decomposition mechanism is radical-mediated. Perfluoroheptene thermally decomposed at 200 °C to shorter-chain homologues following a radical chain-scission mechanism. Most of these volatiles observed at low/moderate temperatures were not detected at 890 °C. Ultra-short-chain fluorinated greenhouse gases (e.g., perfluoromethane) were not found.

Curbing dioxin emissions from municipal solid waste incineration: China's action and global share

China generates the world's second-largest amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) and incinerates the largest quantity of MSW. However, data on the latest dioxin emissions from MSW incineration (MSWI) and the related global share were lacking. In the context of MSW classification, distinguishing the long-term MSW generation and incineration quantity, and dioxin emissions was necessary for macro-control and policy-making by the Chinese Government. By considering population size and GDP per capita, China's MSW generation toward 2050 was projected based on Monte Carlo simulation. Moreover, dioxin emission factors were also assumed based on the diffusion rate of four grades of air pollution control devices (APCDs). Finally, we show that the quantity of China's MSW generation in 2050 will be 363.50 million tonnes (Mt) with 341.06-382.45 Mt of 75% certainty. China's dioxin emissions from MSWI were approximately 15.46 g I-TEQ in 2019, which accounted for 26.1% of total emissions from global MSWI. We discuss dioxin emission reduction scenarios depending on MSW diversion and APCD upgrades. China's dioxin emissions will be 70.38 g I-TEQ for the business-as-usual scenario, and the dioxin emissions will be 9.29 g I-TEQ (within the range of 8.88-9.64 g I-TEQ) for the optimal scenario in 2050. Moreover, in 2050, the APCD diffusion rate will account for 98.8% of the sensitivity of dioxin emissions from China's MSWI. According to the assumed scenarios, there is a dioxin emission reduction potential of 18.6% and 86.8% in 2050 by MSW diversion alone and maximum APCD upgrades combined with food waste diversion, respectively.

The associations of prenatal exposure to dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls with neurodevelopment at 6 Months of age: Multi-pollutant approaches

BACKGROUND

Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants, including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs), and nondioxin-like PCBs (NDL-PCBs), has been hypothesized to have a detrimental impact on neurodevelopment. However, the association of prenatal exposure to a dioxin and PCB mixture with neurodevelopment remains largely inconclusive partly because these chemical levels are correlated.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to elucidate the association of in utero exposure to a mixture of dioxins and PCBs with neurodevelopment measured at 6 months of age by applying multipollutant methods.

METHODS

A total of 514 pregnant women were recruited between July 2002 and October 2005 in the Sapporo cohort, Hokkaido Study on Environment and Children's Health. The concentrations of individual dioxin and PCB isomers were assessed in maternal peripheral blood during pregnancy. The mental and psychomotor development of the study participants' infants was evaluated using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-2nd Edition (n = 259). To determine both the joint and individual associations of prenatal exposure to a dioxin and PCB mixture with infant neurodevelopment, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and quantile-based g-computation were employed.

RESULTS

Suggestive inverse associations were observed between in utero exposure to a dioxin and PCB mixture and infant psychomotor development in both the BKMR and quantile g-computation models. In contrast, we found no association of a dioxin and PCB mixture with mental development. When group-specific posterior inclusion probabilities were estimated, BKMR suggested prenatal exposure to mono-ortho PCBs as the more important contributing factors to early psychomotor development compared with the other dioxin or PCB groups. No evidence of nonlinear exposure-outcome relationships or interactions among the chemical mixtures was detected.

CONCLUSIONS

Applying the two complementary statistical methods for chemical mixture analysis, we demonstrated limited evidence of inverse associations of prenatal exposure to dioxins and PCBs with infant psychomotor development.

A Review of Soil Contaminated with Dioxins and Biodegradation Technologies: Current Status and Future Prospects

This article provides a comprehensive assessment of dioxins contaminating the soil and evaluates the bioremediation technology currently being widely used, and also offers recommendations for future prospects. Soil pollution containing dioxins is extremely toxic and hazardous to human health and the environment. Dioxin concentrations in soils around the world are caused by a variety of sources and outcomes, but the main sources are from the consequences of war and human activities. Bioremediation technology (bioaugmentation, biostimulation, and phytoremediation) is considered an optimal and environmentally friendly technology, with the goal of applying native microbial communities and using plant species with a high biomass to treat contaminated dioxins in soil. The powerful bioremediation system is the growth of microorganisms that contribute to the increased mutualistic and competitive relationships between different strains of microorganisms. Although biological treatment technology can thoroughly treat contaminated dioxins in soil with high efficiency, the amount of gas generated and Cl radicals dispersed after the treatment process remains high. Further research on the subject is required to provide stricter control over the outputs noted in this study.

Air Quality Impact Assessment of a Waste-to-Energy Plant: Modelling Results vs. Monitored Data

The impact of the emissions from a municipal Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant in Northern Italy on local air quality was assessed using the CALMET-CALPUFF atmospheric dispersion modelling system. Model simulations were based on hourly emission rates measured by continuous stack monitoring systems and considered both air quality-regulated pollutants (nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, toxic elements, benzo(a)pyrene), and other trace pollutants typical of WtE plants (dioxins, furans, and mercury). The model results were compared to both long-term observations from the air quality monitoring network and with short-term measurements from dedicated monitoring campaigns in the vicinity of the WtE plant, in both warm and cold season conditions. Modelling and observational results showed that the estimated plant contributions are very limited. This suggests that the observed concentration levels were the result of the contribution of all the sources distributed over the area and that they were not solely driven by the activity of the plant. Estimated contributions from the plant’s emissions were usually at least two orders of magnitudes lower than the ambient levels at the nearest monitoring site and even lower at the farthest sites.

A review on environmental occurrence, toxic effects and transformation of man-made bromophenols

Brominated phenols (BPs) of anthropogenic origin are aromatic substances widely used in the industry as flame retardants (FRs) and pesticides as well as the components of FRs and polymers. In this review, we have focused on describing 2,4-dibromophenol (2,4-DBP), 2,4,6-tribromophenol (2,4,6-TBP) and pentabromophenol (PBP), which are the most commonly used in the industry and are the most often detected in the air, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the human body. This review describes human-related sources of these BPs that influence their occurrence in the environment (atmosphere, surface water, sediment, soil, biota), indoor air and dust, food, drinking water and the human organism. Data from in vitro and in vivo studies showing 2,4-DBP, 2,4,6-TBP and PBP toxicity, including their estrogenic activity, effects on development and reproduction, perturbations of cellular redox balance and cytotoxic action have been described. Moreover, the processes of BPs transformation that occur in human and other mammals, plants and bacteria have been discussed. Finally, the effect of abiotic factors (e.g. UV irradiation and temperature) on BPs conversion to highly toxic brominated dioxins and brominated furans as well as polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers has been presented.

Survey of bioavailable PCDDs, PCDFs, dioxin-like PCBs, and PBBs in air, water, and sediment media using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) deployed in the Hartbeespoort Dam area, South Africa

A survey of bioavailable polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs), and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) from ambient air, water and sediment was performed in the Hartbeespoort Dam area in South Africa, a region where data on highly toxic Stockholm Convention persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is scanty. The sampling was designed to simulate POP bioaccumulation in benthic and aquatic dwelling organisms as well as ambient air for estimation of ecological risk. The objective was to survey the spatiotemporal distribution and fate of bioavailable priority persistent organic compounds in the Hartbeespoort Dam in summer, autumn and winter seasons and to validate the utility of a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOF) method for PCDD/F, PCB, and PBB analysis. The highest detection rates for bioavailable priority POPs were for PCB 77 and PCB 126 which were detected in 15 and 16 of the 22 samples, though the majority of the detections were < LOQ for PCB 77. Overall, PCB 126, PBB 10 and PBB 49 recorded the highest quantified bioavailable concentrations per site in SPMDs deployed in the Hartbeespoort Dam. The SPMDs deployed in air at the Magalies River site in winter recorded the highest toxic equivalency quotient (TEQ) of 29.77 pg TEQ SPMD^-1. The highest TEQs recorded for SPMDs deployed in the sediment phase were 10.2, 3.3, and 3.2 pg TEQ SPMD^-1, recorded at the Harbour site in summer, Dam wall in summer and Harbour in winter respectively. In water, SPMDs deployed at the Crocodile River site recorded the highest TEQ of 0.81 pg TEQ SPMD^-1 in summer. TEQ data shows that air carries significant bioavailable dl-toxicity compared to the water phase, and sediment generally carries the highest dl-toxicity. Detection rates for bioavailable PBBs were generally very low, with < 3 detections being quantified above the LOQ for the majority of the sites. Statistical analysis of TEQs computed at all sites, using AVOVA shows that the dispersion of TEQs in the Hartbeespoort Dam is largely homogenous as the differences between the TEQs were insignificant (p > 0.05).

Classification of Human Failure in Chemical Plants: Case Study of Various Types of Chemical Accidents in South Korea from 2010 to 2017

The increasing use and distribution of chemicals are causing serious chemical accidents such as fires, explosions, and leaks during manufacturing and handling. In most cases, all risks caused by chemicals are classified as accidents due to defects in process facilities, human errors, and multi-cause accidents. Among chemical accidents caused by human errors, accurate analysis of accidents caused by the complex action of various types of human failures is required. Based on the accident investigation reports that occurred in South Korea from 2010 to 2017, chemical accidents caused by human failure were analyzed, and the fundamental causes were derived by classifying them into human error and violation. Human failure was analyzed according to the classification criteria for human failure of health and safety executive (HSE). As a result of the analysis, several types of human failure acted in combination to be a more significant cause of chemical accidents; incorrect application of process rules and procedures, inappropriate chemical information, lack of education, and defects in the current safety regulation were analyzed as the main causes. In addition, the cause of human errors was presented through case studies of chemical accidents in South Korea.

Adverse Impact of Environmental Chemicals on Developmental Origins of Kidney Disease and Hypertension

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypertension are becoming a global health challenge, despite developments in pharmacotherapy. Both diseases can begin in early life by so-called "developmental origins of health and disease" (DOHaD). Environmental chemical exposure during pregnancy can affect kidney development, resulting in renal programming. Here, we focus on environmental chemicals that pregnant mothers are likely to be exposed, including dioxins, bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), heavy metals, and air pollution. We summarize current human evidence and animal models that supports the link between prenatal exposure to environmental chemicals and developmental origins of kidney disease and hypertension, with an emphasis on common mechanisms. These include oxidative stress, renin-angiotensin system, reduced nephron numbers, and aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling pathway. Urgent action is required to identify toxic chemicals in the environment, avoid harmful chemicals exposure during pregnancy and lactation, and continue to discover other potentially harmful chemicals. Innovation is also needed to identify kidney disease and hypertension in the earliest stage, as well as translating effective reprogramming interventions from animal studies into clinical practice. Toward DOHaD approach, prohibiting toxic chemical exposure and better understanding of underlying mechanisms, we have the potential to reduce global burden of kidney disease and hypertension.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in food and human dietary intake: An update of the scientific literature

It is well established that for non-occupationally exposed populations, dietary intake is, by far, the main way of human exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDD/Fs), a family of environmental POPs with a well-known potential toxicity -including carcinogenicity-in humans. We here summarize the results of recent studies (2010-2021) (databases: Scopus and PubMed), focused on determining the levels of PCDD/Fs in food samples of different origins, as well as the dietary intake of these pollutants. We have revised studies conducted in various Asian, American and European countries. However, information is rather limited, with no recent data for most countries over the world. Due to the enormous differences in the methodologies of the studies, to conduct a detailed comparison of the results for the different regions and countries has not been possible. Notwithstanding, where data over time are available, important reductions have been observed. These reductions have been linked to the decreases in the environmental emissions of PCDD/Fs noted in recent years. Interestingly, reductions in the levels of PCDD/Fs in biological tissues are also occurring in parallel. In general, the tolerable daily/weekly/monthly dietary intakes of PCDD/Fs are not being currently exceeded where data are available.

Perinatal Resveratrol Therapy to Dioxin-Exposed Dams Prevents the Programming of Hypertension in Adult Rat Offspring

Exposure to environmental chemicals during pregnancy and lactation is a contributing factor in gut microbiota dysbiosis and linked to programming of hypertension. 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), the most toxic dioxin, induces toxic effects by mediating aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). Resveratrol, a potent antioxidant with prebiotic properties, can possess high affinity for AHR and protect against TCDD-activated AHR attack. We examined whether perinatal resveratrol therapy prevents offspring hypertension programmed by maternal TCDD exposure and whether its beneficial effects are related to reshaping gut microbiota and antagonizing AHR-mediated T helper 17 (TH17) cells responses using a maternal TCDD exposure rat model. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were given a weekly oral dose of TCDD 200 ng/kg for four doses (T), 50 mg/L of resveratrol in drinking water (CR), TCDD + resveratrol (TR), or vehicle (C) in pregnancy and lactation periods. Male offspring (n = 7–8/group) were sacrificed at the age of 12 weeks. Perinatal TCDD exposure caused elevated blood pressure in adult male offspring, which resveratrol supplementation prevented. Additionally, the TCDD-induced programming of hypertension is coincided with the activation of AHR signaling, TH17-induced renal inflammation, and alterations of gut microbiota compositions. Conversely, TCDD-mediated induction of AHR signaling and TH17 responses were restored by maternal resveratrol supplementation. Furthermore, maternal resveratrol supplementation prevented the programming of hypertension and was related to increased genera Bacteroides, ASF356, and Lachnoclostridium. Taken together, these results suggest that the interplay between gut microbiota, AHR-mediated TH17 responses, and renal inflammation in the gut and kidneys may play an important role in the action of resveratrol against TCDD-induced programming of hypertension.

Atmospheric PCDDs/PCDFs levels and occurrences in Southeast Asia: A review

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are toxic compounds derived from anthropogenic sources that stay in the environment for long periods. Ambient air has become the most important pathway for the transfer of PCDDs/PCDFs from emission sources to the environment. This review intends to summarise the information available on atmospheric PCDDs/PCDFs in the countries of Southeast Asia to provide a detailed description of the trends in PCDDs/PCDFs emissions, key sources, and levels in urban, rural, and industrial air as reported in peer-reviewed literature since 2000 and by the United Nations Environment Programme. As the largest country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is the major PCDDs/PCDFs emitter, accounting for 72.81% of the total release of PCDDs/PCDFs in the air from all available inventories in this region, while Brunei Darussalam is the lowest emitter, contributing to less than 0.02%. Open burning processes have become the largest source of ambient PCDDs/PCDFs in the region (69.62%), followed by waste incineration (10.69%), and ferrous and non-ferrous metal production (8.78%). PCDDs/PCDFs levels in rural areas ranged between 10 and 38 fg TEQ m^-3; however, where open burning waste has occurred, the levels rose to 12-29 times higher. In urban areas, ambient levels were 15 times greater than in rural areas, varying from 23 to 565 fg TEQ m^-3. Atmospheric concentrations near industrial palm oil and waste incinerator sites were between 64 and 1530 fg TEQ m^-3. The non-cancer risk of ambient exposure to PCDDs/PCDFs through inhalation is low among populations near facilities emitting PCDDs/PCDFs. The lack of local technical capacity, the high economic costs, and the lack of established human resource capacities have been the major challenges in conducting ambient PCDDs/PCDFs studies in most countries in the region.

Temporal Trends of Persistent Organic Pollutants across Africa after a Decade of MONET Passive Air Sampling

The Global Monitoring Plan of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) was established to generate long-term data necessary for evaluating the effectiveness of regulatory measures at a global scale. After a decade of passive air monitoring (2008-2019), MONET is the first network to produce sufficient data for the analysis of long-term temporal trends of POPs in the African atmosphere. This study reports concentrations of 20 POPs (aldrin, chlordane, chlordecone, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, endosulfan, HBCDD, HCB, HCHs, heptachlor, hexabromobiphenyl, mirex, PBDEs, PCBs, PCDDs, PCDFs, PeCB, PFOA, and PFOS) monitored in 9 countries (Congo, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, and Sudan). As of January 1, 2019, concentrations were in the following ranges (pg/m³): 0.5-37.7 (∑₆PCB), 0.006-0.724 (∑₁₇PCDD/F), 0.05-5.5 (∑₉PBDE), 0.6-11.3 (BDE 209), 0.1-1.8 (∑₃HBCDD), 1.8-138 (∑₆DDT), 0.1-24.3 (∑₃endosulfan), 0.6-14.6 (∑₄HCH), 9.1-26.4 (HCB), 13.8-18.2 (PeCB). Temporal trends indicate that concentrations of many POPs (PCBs, DDT, HCHs, endosulfan) have declined significantly over the past 10 years, though the rate was slow at some sites. Concentrations of other POPs such as PCDD/Fs and PBDEs have not changed significantly over the past decade and are in fact increasing at some sites, attributed to the prevalence of open burning of waste (particularly e-waste) across Africa. Modeled airflow back-trajectories suggest that the elevated concentrations at some sites are primarily due to sustained local emissions, while the low concentrations measured at Mt. Kenya represent the continental background level and are primarily influenced by long-range transport.

Why We Will Continue to Lose Our Battle with Cancers If We Do Not Stop Their Triggers from Environmental Pollution

Besides our current health concerns due to COVID-19, cancer is a longer-lasting and even more dramatic pandemic that affects almost a third of the human population worldwide. Most of the emphasis on its causes has been posed on genetic predisposition, chance, and wrong lifestyles (mainly, obesity and smoking). Moreover, our medical weapons against cancers have not improved too much during the last century, although research is in progress. Once diagnosed with a malignant tumour, we still rely on surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. The main problem is that we have focused on fighting a difficult battle instead of preventing it by controlling its triggers. Quite the opposite, our knowledge of the links between environmental pollution and cancer has surged from the 1980s. Carcinogens in water, air, and soil have continued to accumulate disproportionally and grow in number and dose, bringing us to today's carnage. Here, a synthesis and critical review of the state of the knowledge of the links between cancer and environmental pollution in the three environmental compartments is provided, research gaps are briefly discussed, and some future directions are indicated. New evidence suggests that it is relevant to take into account not only the dose but also the time when we are exposed to carcinogens. The review ends by stressing that more dedication should be put into studying the environmental causes of cancers to prevent and avoid curing them, that the precautionary approach towards environmental pollutants must be much more reactionary, and that there is an urgent need to leave behind the outdated petrochemical-based industry and goods production.

Analysis of medical waste management and impact analysis of COVID-19 on its generation in Taiwan

Medical waste management in Taiwan is a crucial issue due to its highly environmental and human health risks. The main objectives of this paper were to analyse the status of medical waste generation and treatment in recent years, and also address the discussions on the impacts of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on its generation in the first half of 2020. It showed that the reported quantities have slightly increased from 35,747 metric tonnes (Mt) in 2016 to 40,407 Mt in 2019, showing an average increase by 4.17%. This rate of increase was consistent with the hospital services. When classified by the reported codes, the C-type waste (infectious waste) accounted for about 89% of the reported quantities, which indicated an annual increase by 4.14% during the same period. In addition, the medical waste treatment in 2019 was mainly dependent on the commissioned treatment (80.18%), followed by the recycling (18.53%) and the self-treatment (1.29%). Furthermore, the impact of COVID-19 on the medical waste generation in Taiwan was not significant in the first half of 2020 compared to the data during the years of 2016-2019. It was indicated that the consistent trend was observed at the daily confirmed COVID-19 cases in Taiwan during this period. Obviously, the reduction in the hospital medical services during the COVID-19 outbreak should be offset by the increase in medical waste generation from the medical services. In order to try to ensure safe and complete destruction of the COVID-19 virus, all the waste generated from the healthcare facilities should be treated in the incineration plants.

Identification of viable TCDD access pathways to human AhR PAS-B ligand binding domain

Unintentionally released in the environment as by-products of industrial activities, dioxins, exemplified by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), represent a primary concern for human health. Exposure to these chemicals is known to produce a broad spectrum of adverse effects, including cancer. The main mechanism of action of TCDD in humans involves binding to the Aryl hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR). Although qualitatively established, TCDD capture by the AhR remains poorly characterized at the molecular level. Starting from a recently developed structural model of the human AhR PAS-B domain, in this work we attempt the identification of viable TCDD access pathways to the human AhR ligand binding domain by means of molecular dynamics. Based on the result of metadynamics simulations, we identify two main regions that may potentially serve as access paths for TCDD. For each path, we characterize the residues closely interacting with TCDD, thereby suggesting a possible mechanism for TCDD capture. Our results are reviewed and discussed in the light of the available information about Human AhR structure and functions.

Qualitative and quantitative changes in traffic and waste incineration PCDD/Fs in urban air and soils under different seasonal conditions (Metropolitan Area of Barcelona)

A sampling and analysis scheme was implemented to discriminate between inputs of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) at low concentrations in urban areas. Ambient air and soils were sampled and analyzed in five stations in the Metropolitan area of Barcelona (2018-2019); one located in a reference urban traffic site and four in the area of influence of an integrated waste management facility (IWMF) that included a solid waste incinerator. Seasonality was the main factor determining the PCDD/F composition, and involved lower values in the warmer months. This seasonal effect was related to enhanced photooxidation of PCDDs compared to PCDFs and faster depletion of the less chlorinated congeners due to volatility at higher ambient temperature; consistent with the compounds' octanol-air partition coefficients. The ratio 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorobenzofuran/1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorobenzofuran allowed, for the first time, identifying cases of preferential contributions of IWMF and traffic inputs, i.e. values of 0.06 and 0.32, respectively. Combination of this ratio with the airborne PCDD/F levels illustrated that the quantitative PCDD/F levels were not a useful criterion for elucidation between IWMF and traffic inputs. PCDD/Fs levels in soils ranged between 9.0 and 22 pg WHO-TEQ/g in the two sites closest to the IWMF, while the other sites, including the traffic site, showed values between 0.8 and 1.9 pg WHO-TEQ/g. The levels in the former group were higher than those observed in other urban areas and above 5 pg WHO-TEQ/g, which is a limit reference value in several European countries. The C₇ and C₈ observed congener distributions in all soils examined were different from those in the air samples and similar to those reported in sewage sludge from waste water treatment plants, not showing influences from IWMF or traffic PCDD/F inputs.

Long-term nationwide assessment of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls ambient air concentrations for ten years in South Korea

In this study, seasonal/regional variations of Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/DFs) and dioxin like-polychlorinated biphenyls in the ambient air were monitored for ten years (2008-2017) using a high volume air sampler. As a result of strict regulation enforced by Korea Ministry of Environment in 2008, PCDD/DFs concentrations in the ambient air decreased from 0.051 pg I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2009 to 0.014 pg I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2017 which was comparably associated with cut-down of their emission sources from 880.2 g I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2001 to 24.2 g I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2015; revealing that it was only 2.7% against that of 2001. In 2017, mean TEQ concentration level of PCDD/DFs in the air of South Korea was quite low in comparison to its ambient environmental standards of 0.6 pg I-TEQ Sm^-3 for PCDD/DFs. Particularly, the sum of PCDD/DFs in the background revealed the lowest level, however, the fraction of octachlorodibenzodioxin among other isomers exposed at the highest level in this study, suggesting that the ambient air quality in the background being studied was severely and persistently impaired by inflowing unknown sources of any possible anthropogenic transboundary migratory air pollutants. Moreover, this study conducted the scientific analysis of the long-term variations in the ambient air and emission sources using principal component analysis. From this of 10 years long-term nationwide assessments for the PCDD/DFs and dl-PCBs in the ambient air, it is possible to prove that South Korean environmental policy to manage POPs has been successfully conducted for the last ten years.

Assessment of Air Pollution with Polychlorinated Dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and Polychlorinated Dibenzofuranes (PCDFs) in Lithuania

Polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) are highly bioavailable in humans, either through direct inhalation or indirectly by trophic transfer from contaminated food or water. The main sources of pollution with PCDD/F include industrial and non-industrial combustion sources, like domestic contaminated wood burning, house fires, burning of leaves from trees, etc. When looking for alternative energy sources and reduced energy costs, solid waste incineration plants are intended to be built in the vicinity of urbanized areas, and thus, the need emerges for examination and prediction of to what extent the solid waste incineration plants might affect the surrounding ecosystem, air pollution, and human health. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) (or simply PCDD/F congeners) belong to the group of semi-volatile organic compounds with environmental stability and long-range transfer in the ambient air. Dioxin isomers are highly toxic and may have carcinogenic and mutagenic effects in humans. PCDD/F is detected in air, water, sediment, plants and animals. PCDD/F is generally distributed in the particulate phase in ambient air. For solid waste incineration plant emissions, the distribution of PCDD/F particles into particles with a diameter of <10 μm is more than 81% of the total particulate matter, and more than 54% of the PCDD/F is distributed into particles with a diameter of <2.5 μm. The aim of this study is to investigate the sources of PCDD/F, emissions and potential hazards, i.e., a toxic equivalent in Lithuania. The measurements were performed in two largest cities of Lithuania Vilnius and Kaunas, where the level of PCDD/F discovered was from 0.015 to 0.52 pg/m3 and from 0.02 to 0.05 pg/m3, respectively. The sites for the monitoring were selected based on their proximity to the locations of the planned cogeneration power plants in these cities.

Dioxin exposure and breast cancer risk in a prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

Dioxins are persistent organic pollutants generated from industrial combustion processes such as waste incineration. To date, results from epidemiologic studies of dioxin exposure and breast cancer risk have been mixed.

OBJECTIVES

To prospectively examine the association between ambient dioxin exposure using a nationwide spatial database of industrial dioxin-emitting facilities and invasive breast cancer risk in the Nurses' Health Study II (NHSII).

METHODS

NHSII includes female registered nurses in the US who have completed self-administered biennial questionnaires since 1989. Incident invasive breast cancer diagnoses were self-reported and confirmed by medical record review. Dioxin exposure was estimated based on residential proximity, duration of residence, and emissions from facilities located within 3, 5, and 10 km around geocoded residential addresses updated throughout follow-up. Cox regression models adjusted for breast cancer risk factors were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

RESULTS

From 1989 to 2013, 3840 invasive breast cancer cases occurred among 112,397 participants. There was no association between residential proximity to any dioxin facilities (all facilities combined) and breast cancer risk overall. However, women who resided within 10 km of any municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) compared to none had increased breast cancer risk (adjusted HR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.28), with stronger associations noted for women who lived within 5 km (adjusted HR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.52). Positive associations were also observed for longer duration of residence and higher dioxin emissions from MSWIs within 3, 5, and 10 km. There were no clear differences in patterns of association for ER + vs. ER-breast cancer or by menopausal status.

DISCUSSION

Results from this study support positive associations between dioxin exposure from MSWIs and invasive breast cancer risk.

Concentrations, toxic equivalence, and age-corrected trends of legacy organic contaminants in Lake Champlain lake trout: 2012-2018

Our study is the first comprehensive, multi-year assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) lake trout concentrations and trends in Lake Champlain (LC). Lake trout whole-fish, fillets, and eggs were collected over the 2012-2018 study period. Total PCB concentrations (395.7 ng/g wet weight (ww)) were the highest average concentration of any contaminant grouping reported in this study. Whole-fish lake trout modeling revealed highly significant (p < 0.05) log-linear correlations for all dioxin-like contaminants measured. Overall contaminant decreases for the 2012-2018 period ranged from 20.9% (total PCNs) to 39.3% (2378-TCDD). Contaminant decreases for total PCBs and total-5-PBDEs were 30.9% and 48.3%, respectively. Of particular significance were the measured total PBDE concentrations (74.3 ng/g ww) found in LC whole-fish lake trout. Log-linear forecasting indicates that whole-fish lake trout TEQs will be below the guidelines protective of wildlife thresholds during the periods 2035-2047 (TRG_bird) and 2062-2088 (TRG_mammal). Based on current USEPA guidelines, all lake trout fillets from Lake Champlain analyzed for this study exceed the human health cancer screening value of 0.15 pg-TEQ/g ww by a substantial margin (average = 8.61 pg-TEQ/g ww). Dioxin-like trend data collected for Lake Champlain indicates that the mechanisms of contaminant uptake, trends, and yearly percent decline reflect those found in the Great Lakes.

Long-term monitoring of PCDD/Fs in soils in the vicinity of a hazardous waste incinerator in China: Temporal variations and environmental impacts

Campaigns from 2008 to 2016 are carried out to study temporal variations and environmental impacts of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/Fs) in soils in the vicinity of a new hazardous waste incinerator (HWI) in China. Results indicate that after 8-year operation of HWI, the geometrical means of both the total concentrations and the TEQ values of PCDD/Fs in soils decrease from 1280 ng·kg^-1 and 3.08 ng WHO-TEQ·kg^-1 to 568 ng·kg^-1 and 2.70 ng WHO-TEQ·kg^-1, respectively, showing generally limited impact on soils within 7.5 km. Temporal changes of PCDD/Fs congener profiles trend to profiles in combustion sources. Considering the whole studied area, results of principal component analysis between soils and emission sources show that instead of HWI, other sources including open burning, traffic, and cement plant are more responsible for PCDD/Fs accumulation. The modeling results of AERMOD indicate the dominant roles of wind velocities and directions on the deposition of PCDD/Fs emitted from HWI. The largest PCDD/Fs increase value in soils predicted by integrating AERMOD and a reservoir model is very limited after 25 years (2.03 × 10^-5 ng WHO-TEQ·kg^-1), indicating relatively minor impacts of HWI on surrounding soils, but the noticeable impact on area downwind from the stack in short distance (e.g., within 0.5 km) should be recognized.

Pathways and influential factors study on the formation of PBDD/Fs during co-processing BDE-209 in cement kiln simulation system

The thermal processes of cement kilns are sources of polybrominated dibenzofurans and dioxins (PBDD/Fs); however, when co-processing decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) soil in cement kilns, very few reports have investigated the mechanism of PBDD/Fs formation from BDE-209. Therefore, the pathways and factors that influence the formation of PBDD/Fs were investigated using Box-Behnken design (BBD) of the response surface methodology (RSM) at lab-scale. The PBDEs, HBr/Br₂ and PBDD/Fs emissions in flue gas from the simulated thermal process were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS), high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS), and ion chromatography (IC). Density functional theory (DFT) was also used to further discuss the formation of PBDD/Fs. The major products of BDE-209 thermal decomposition in flue gas were 97.1% HBr/Br₂ (a.v. 26.6%/70.6%) > 2.7% PBDEs >0.2% PBDD/Fs. Formation of precursors were the main pathways for PBDD/Fs, and those precursors were dominated by higher-brominated PBDEs (heptã deca-BDEs); debromination of BDE-209 was also a crucial pathway for the formation of PBDD/Fs throughout the thermal process. Interestingly, it was easier to form HpBDD/Fs from OBDD/Fs than from PBDEs. The O₂ percentage and interaction factors of O₂ percentage, temperature, and CaCO₃ percentage have the largest influence on PBDD/Fs emissions and formation.

Aerobic bacterial transformation and biodegradation of dioxins: a review

Waste generation tends to surge in quantum as the population and living conditions grow. A group of structurally related chemicals of dibenzofurans and dibenzo-p-dioxins including their chlorinated congeners collectively known as dioxins are among the most lethal environmental pollutants formed during different anthropogenic activities. Removal of dioxins from the environment is challenging due to their persistence, recalcitrance to biodegradation, and prevalent nature. Dioxin elimination through the biological approach is considered both economically and environmentally as a better substitute to physicochemical conventional approaches. Bacterial aerobic degradation of these compounds is through two major catabolic routes: lateral and angular dioxygenation pathways. Information on the diversity of bacteria with aerobic dioxin degradation capability has accumulated over the years and efforts have been made to harness this fundamental knowledge to cleanup dioxin-polluted soils. This paper covers the previous decades and recent developments on bacterial diversity and aerobic bacterial transformation, degradation, and bioremediation of dioxins in contaminated systems.

Lung surfactant monolayer - A good natural barrier against dibenzo-p-dioxins

The present study deals with interaction of two air pollutants: dibenzodioxin, DD, and its' monochlorinated derivative, 2-chlorodibenzodioxin, 2CLDD, with models of the lung surfactant (LS) system. A monolayer composed of DPPC and POPC in 1:1 molar ratio was used as a model of LS. One component monolayers of DPPC and POPC were also examined, to model the interiors of LC and LE domains in LS, respectively. Molecular dynamics simulations and measurements of surface pressure isotherms, as well as polarization modulation-infrared reflection-absorption spectra were employed to study the influence of dioxins on the monolayers. We demonstrate, that both dioxins adsorb and accumulate in the hydrophobic parts of all three monolayers. DD molecules prefer flat orientation on the surface at large areas. Upon compression, they lift and orient perpendicularly to the monolayer. Flat orientation of DD molecules leads to their large surface area. In consequence they preferentially locate in vicinity of unsaturated chains of POPC - they are small enough to fill void spaces created by kinks in unsaturated chains. 2CLDD orient along monolayer normal already at the largest areas and preference for POPC was not observed for them. In laterally relaxed states, a condensing effect, connected with reduction of surface area available to the lipids was observed for both dioxins. In the case of 2CLDD, additional locally ordering influence of dioxin molecules was detected. In compressed states, the presence of dioxin molecules hinders alignment and uniform ordering of lipid chains.

The preconception environment and sperm epigenetics

BACKGROUND

Infertility is a common reproductive disorder, with male factor infertility accounting for approximately half of all cases. Taking a paternal perceptive, recent research has shown that sperm epigenetics, such as changes in DNA methylation, histone modification, chromatin structure, and noncoding RNA expression, can impact reproductive and offspring health. Importantly, environmental conditions during the preconception period has been demonstrated to shape sperm epigenetics.

OBJECTIVES

To provide an overview on epigenetic modifications that regulate normal gene expression and epigenetic remodeling that occurs during spermatogenesis, and to discuss the epigenetic alterations that may occur to the paternal germline as a consequence of preconception environmental conditions and exposures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We examined published literature available on databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect) focusing on adult male preconception environmental exposures and sperm epigenetics in epidemiologic studies and animal models.

RESULTS

The preconception period is a sensitive developmental window in which a variety of exposures such as toxicants, nutrition, drugs, stress, and exercise, affects sperm epigenetics.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

Understanding the environmental legacy of the sperm epigenome during spermatogenesis will enhance our understanding of reproductive health and improve reproductive success and offspring well-being.

The effect of the transition from elemental chlorine bleaching to chlorine dioxide bleaching in the pulp industry on the formation of PCDD/Fs

The article reviews the transition from bleaching kraft pulp with elemental chlorine to bleaching with chlorine dioxide with respect to formation of chlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs). New data is also presented for bleaching with 100% chlorine dioxide and the effect of elemental chlorine impurities. The typical fingerprint of PCDD/Fs in pulp bleached with elemental chlorine was unique compared to all other sources such as incineration and metallurgic processes. 2,3,7,8-TCDD and 2,3,7,8-TCDF were the dominating congeners formed during the period pulp was bleached with elemental chlorine. Elimination of unchlorinated precursors lowered, but did not eliminate, the formation of 2,3,7,8-TCDD and 2,3,7,8-TCDF. The formation of 2,3,7,8-TCDD and 2,3,7,8-TCDF increases exponentially with the amount of elemental chlorine used. Replacing elemental chlorine with chlorine dioxide (with levels of elemental chlorine contamination of <0.3% in the chlorine dioxide) in pulp bleaching eliminates the formation of 2,3,7,8-TCDD and 2,3,7,8-TCDF. PCDD/Fs can also be found in background levels in ecosystems, food, soil and air as well as in unbleached pulp, bleached pulp, and paper and fiber products. Thus, the only way to determine if PCDD/Fs are present from bleaching is to make a full congener analysis and compare to known sources and processes as well as to laboratory blanks and unbleached reference samples.

Persistent Organic Pollutants in Food: Contamination Sources, Health Effects and Detection Methods

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) present in foods have been a major concern for food safety due to their persistence and toxic effects. To ensure food safety and protect human health from POPs, it is critical to achieve a better understanding of POP pathways into food and develop strategies to reduce human exposure. POPs could present in food in the raw stages, transferred from the environment or artificially introduced during food preparation steps. Exposure to these pollutants may cause various health problems such as endocrine disruption, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, birth defects, and dysfunctional immune and reproductive systems. This review describes potential sources of POP food contamination, analytical approaches to measure POP levels in food and efforts to control food contamination with POPs.

Higher health risk resulted from dermal exposure to PCBs than HFRs and the influence of haze

To investigate the influence of haze on human dermal exposure to a series of halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), paired forehead wipes were collected from 46 volunteers (23 males, 23 females) using gauze pads soaked in isopropyl alcohol under heavy and light haze pollution levels. The median levels of ∑₂₇HFRs and ∑₂₇PCBs in all 92 samples were 672 and 1300ng/m², respectively. Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) (171ng/m²) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) (134ng/m²) were the dominant components of HFRs, indicating that dermal exposure may also be the significant pathway for non-volatile compounds. PCB-37 contributed the most to ∑₂₇PCBs, with a median concentration of 194ng/m², followed by PCB-60 (141ng/m²). Generally, PBDE, PCB and DD (dehalogenated derivatives of DPs) levels on the foreheads of female participants (291, 1340, 0.92ng/m²) were higher (p=0.037, 0.001, and 0.031, respectively) than those of male participants (226, 989, and 0.45ng/m²). A significant difference (p=0.001) in PCBs was found between light (1690ng/m²) and heavy (996ng/m²) haze pollution conditions. Nevertheless, HFR levels under heavy (median=595ng/m², ranging from 295 to 1490ng/m²) and light haze pollution conditions (ranging from 205 to 1220ng/m² with a median of 689ng/m²) did not show significant differences (p=0.269). The non-carcinogenic health risk resulting from dermal exposure to ∑₈HFRs and ∑₂₇PCBs was 8.72×10^-5 and 1.63×10^-2, respectively, raising more concern about populations' exposure to PCBs than HFRs.

Application of national pollutant inventories for monitoring trends on dioxin emissions from stationary industrial sources in Australia, Canada and European Union

Industrial sources, including iron ore sintering, municipal waste incineration and non-ferrous metal processing have been prominent emitters of dioxins to the environment. With the expanding industrial sectors, many international conventions were established in order to reduce the emission of dioxins in the past two decades. The Stockholm convention, a global monitoring treaty, entered into force in 2004 with the aim to promote development of strategies to reduce or eliminate dioxin emissions. According to the convention, parties are required to develop national inventory databases to report emission levels and develop a national implementation plan (NIP) to reduce further dioxin emissions. In order to understand the trend of dioxin emissions since 1990s this study provides a comparative assessment of dioxin emissions from different industrial sources by deriving emission data from the national inventory databases of Australia, Canada and the 28 European countries (EU-28). According to the data collected, iron and steel production and electricity generation were the highest emitters of dioxins in 2017 for Europe, Canada and Australia, when compared to other stationary industrial sources. The change in the trend of dioxin emissions from the iron and steel industry and the public electricity sector was also assessed. The emission of dioxins during 1990–2017 from both iron and steel production and electricity generation revealed a relative decreasing trend, except for Spain and Italy who showed higher level of emissions from iron and steel production in 2017. Furthermore, comparing emission data for metal production revealed that the blast furnace process was the prominent emitter of dioxins comparing to electric arc furnace process. Further investigation was performed to compare the amount of dioxin emitted from three different fuel types, black coal, brown coal and natural gas, used for electricity generation in Australia. The study showed that dioxin emissions from brown coal were higher than black coal for the last two years, while power production from natural gas emits the lowest amounts of dioxins to the environment.
