Abstract
The present study focuses on the chemical composition of the infusions of Sideritis raeseri subsp. raeseri from cultivated and wild populations using NMR, LC-DAD, LC-HRESIMS, and GC-MS techniques, to reveal possible differences. Mainly carbohydrates, flavonoids, and phenylethanoid glycosides were detected in the 1H-NMR spectra of both infusions. In the GC-MS analysis, carbohydrates were shown to be the main constituents in both infusions. Caffeic acid was found in traces only in the cultivated sample, while quinic and chlorogenic acids were detected in both samples. Further investigation by LC-HRESIMS unveiled the same constituents with only slight differences in the amounts. Although the Sideritis samples originated from wild and cultivated populations, similar metabolic profiles were observed in the infusions.

Abstract
Endemic Sideritis dichotoma Huter, herbal tea, is used for colds, coughs and digestive ailments. Since at least 25 % of the active ingredients of pharmacological drugs are obtained from plants, it is important to investigate many plants, both traditionally used and whose potential hasnt yet been discovered, before they disappear. When the results compared to other Sideritis species, it has better antioxidant activity in DPPH⋅ scavenging activity, Fe3+ and Cu2+ reducing capacity methods and is also rich in minerals, necessary for human body, K, Mg, Ca, P, S. Zone values (10-19,5 mm) obtained on S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli, S.enteritidis, E. faecalis, P. putida and K. pnemoniae strains are an indication that the plant has antibacterial activity. 27 secondary metabolites were identified by LC-HRMS. Verbascoside, pharmacologically active compound known to have antitumor effect, cytotoxic selectivity and anticancer activity, is the most abundant phenolic in ethanol extract (49297.13 mg/kg).

Abstract
The genus Sideritis (Lamiaceae) comprises around 150 species, of which many are popular herbal remedies in Mediterranean folk medicine. Already mentioned by Dioscorides and Theophrastus, the "ironwort" or "Greek mountain tea" has been receiving increased attention in recent years. A European Union herbal monograph and assessment report (HMPC) has been issued, covering the species Sideritis scardica, S. clandestina, S. raeseri, and S. syriaca. This study presents results of a first pharmacognostic examination of the botanical and phytochemical differences among and between these emerging commercial species, and other, less studied species. An HPTLC method is proposed for normal phase separation of the species; this means applying two mobile phases on silica plates and subsequent derivatization with natural product reagent (NP/PEG) for visualization of phenolic compounds and anisaldehyde for a broader detection. With the help of selected reference compounds, a system suitability test was established for proper chromatographic separation. The method was applied to specimens from botanical gardens and commercial raw material in order to test its suitability for differentiation and authentication. The HPTLC analysis also includes, for the first time, S. hyssopifolia and other less used Sideritis species. The results might enable the development of a validated phytochemical fingerprint authentication procedure for quality assurance of Sideritis herba.

Abstract
The present study focuses on the polar constituents and biological effects of the methanol extract and the infusion of wild Sideritis sipylea Boiss. from Samos island (Greece), as well as on the nutritional and mineral contents of this plant. The total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were examined. In addition, the anti-acetylcholinesterase property was evaluated, revealing strictly lower results than the control, galanthamine. Furthermore, the nutritional value of the plant is reported herein for the first time, revealing a promising source of protein. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first work on the infusion of this species and the nutritional value of the plant.

Abstract
Herein, a comprehensive review is given focusing on the chemical profiles of the essential oils (EOs), non-volatile compounds, ethnobotany, and biological activities of different Haplophyllum (Rutaceae family) species. To gather the relevant data, all the scientific databases, including Scopus, ISI-WOS (Institute of Scientific Information-Web of Science), and PubMed and highly esteemed publishers such as Elsevier, Springer, Taylor and Francis, etc., were systematically retrieved and reviewed. A wide array of valuable groups of natural compounds, e.g., terpenoids, coumarins, alkaloids, lignans, flavonoids, and organic acids have been isolated and subsequently characterized in different organic extracts of a number of Haplophyllum species. In addition, some remarkable antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, cytotoxic, antileishmanial, and antialgal effects as well as promising remedial therapeutic properties have been well-documented for some species of the genus Haplophyllum.

Abstract
Aloysia Paláu is an important herbal genus from the Verbenaceae family and possesses numerous remedial properties in the folk medicine of Asian, European, and, in particular, South American countries. Only a few reports have discussed some phytochemical characteristics associated with Aloysia species. Right the lack of an exhaustive report prompted us to organize this review article. Accordingly, besides the ethnobotanical knowledge of Aloysia species, their essential oil profiles, phytochemistry of the polar isolated fractions, and the relevant biological activities are discussed in detail.

Abstract
Sideritis cypria Post is an endemic and endangered species of Northern Cyprus. The overall aim of the present study was to evaluate the total phenolic content, the antioxidant, the cytotoxic and the antimicrobial activity of the methanol extract obtained from the aerial parts of cultivated S. cypria. A bio-guided approach led to the isolation of 27 chemical compounds by using various analytical techniques. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The crude extract exerted strong antioxidant activity (DPPH and FRAP assays) which was attributed to its high total phenolic content. Furthermore, groups rich in phenolic content showed highest antioxidant property, whereas groups with phytosterols, diterpenoids and apigenin derivatives exerted cytotoxic effects in MDA-MB231 cancer cell line by the MTT method. Moreover, the cytotoxic activity of four isolated apigenin derivatives was evaluated in the same cancer cells. The antimicrobial activity of the extract and groups were measured, demonstrating lack of activity. To the best of our knowledge, this survey is the first report on the biological activities of the methanol extract of S. cypria.

Abstract
Three iridoid glycosides, 5-allosyloxy-aucubine (1), melittoside (2), ajugol (3), five phenylethanoid glycosides, verbascoside (4), martynoside (5), leucoseptoside A (6), lamalboside (7), decaffeoylverbascoside (8), four flavonoids, xanthomicrol (9), isoscutellarein 7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-β-allopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-glucopyranoside (10), 4'-O-methylisoscutellarein 7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-β-allopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-glucopyranoside (11), 3'-hydroxy-4'-O-methylisoscutellarein 7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-β-allopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-glucopyranoside (12), and two lignan glycosides dehydrodiconiferylalcohol 4-O-β-D-glucopyranose (13) and pinoresinol 4'-O-β-glucopyranoside (14) were isolated from the aerial parts of Sideritis germanicopolitana. Their structures were determined on the basis of detailed NMR and HRESIMS analyses. To our knowledge, all compounds are being reported for the first time from S. germanicopolitana, while the isolated lignans (13 and 14) are new for the genus Sideritis. In vitro evaluation of AChE, BChE and LOX inhibitory effects of all the tested compounds (1-14) resulted in low to moderate activities.

Abstract
Stachys palustris, well-known as marsh woundwort, is a perennial herb growing in wet environments of Europe. Its tubers, leaves and seeds are eaten raw or cooked. Alike other Stachys species, the plant is also used as a traditional remedy. Despite S. palustris has been consumed for centuries, little is known about its chemical constituents. In this work the main secondary metabolites of S. palustris from Hungary and France have been analysed. From the plant ethanolic extracts, ethanoid glucosides, isoscutellarein derivatives, caffeoyl-quinic acids and iridoids have been isolated and structurally characterized by NMR. The essential oils were analysed by GC/MS and showed (E)-phytol, fatty acids and carbonylic compounds as the most abundant compounds. The radical scavenging capacity of plant ethanolic extracts, as evaluated by the DPPH assay, was noteworthy, with IC50 values of 92.08 - 105.42 μg/ml.

Abstract
Sideritis montana subsp. montana is a small annual herb occurring in countries bordering the Mediterranean and Balkan regions. The secondary metabolism of this plant has not been fully explored so far. The aim of the present study was to understand the complex mixture of secondary metabolites and the type of secretory structures. The polar constituents were isolated by column chromatography from the ethanolic extract, and their structure was elucidated by NMR and MS. The essential oil was isolated by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC/MS. The plant indumentum was studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. To complete the work, the essential oil antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity on tumor cells were evaluated by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and MTT methods. Four different classes of secondary metabolites were isolated, namely flavonoids, caffeoylquinic derivatives, glycosidic hydroquinones and iridoids. The essential oil was mainly characterized by sesquiterpenene hydrocarbons. Peltate and long-capitate hairs were the main sites where terpenes and polar constituents are produced. The secondary metabolites found in S. montana subsp. montana are of chemotaxonomic interest, some of them being typical of the genus Sideritis. The trichomes types observed partially differ from those described in other members of the genus Sideritis. The essential oil showed noteworthy inhibition on tumor cells.

Abstract
In the present work, we studied the chemical composition of Chinese artichoke (S. affinis tubers) by analyzing its polar constituents and its macro- and micro- nutrients. A total of nine compounds were isolated from the tuber ethanolic extract and structurally elucidated by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS). The marker compounds identified were oligosaccharide stachyose and the organic acid, succinic acid, as well as phenylethanoid and iridoid glycosides. The macronutrient profile was dominated by carbohydrates (36.9% dw), whereas potassium (2.36%) was the most abundant micro-nutrient. The tuber ethanolic extract was able to efficiently protect human cells (Caco-2, SHSY-5Y and K562) against t-BHP-induced oxidative damage.

Abstract
We report the first analysis in absolute, and in particular, concerning the phytochemical pattern, about an endemic Italian species, Ajuga tenorei C. Presl. The analysis, performed by means of techniques such as Column Chromatography and NMR spectroscopy and Mass spectrometry, led to the isolation and the identification of five compounds namely verbascoside (1), echinacoside (2), ajugoside (3), harpagide (4) and 8-O-acetylharpagide (5). The presence of these compounds is important from both chemotaxonomic and ethno-pharmacological point of view. For what concerns the first point is confirmed the correct botanical classification of the species. The isolated compounds are also known to exert peculiar pharmacological activities and their presence may give a rationale to the historical medicinal properties associated to the Ajuga genus in general, since these plants have a long traditional use in many parts of the world. Such fact might suggest the use of also this species in this sense.

Abstract
A re-examination of Scrophularia canina L. confirmed the presence of iridoid glucosides considered as chemotaxonomic markers for the Scrophulariaceae family, like aucubin, harpagide and 8-O-acetylharpagide, besides the further presence of 8-epiloganic acid, which is, indeed, considered the biogenetic precursor of iridoids normally found in Scrophulariaceae, and was recognised here for the first time in the studied species. Also verbascoside and (E)-phytol were evidenced for the first time in S. canina. The former compound is an almost ubiquitous glycosidic phenyl-ethanoid, which attains systematic importance when in co-occurrence with iridoids, and its taxonomical implications were discussed. The latter compound, even though it is omnipresent, is interestingly endowed with several biological activities, which may give an additional reason for the traditional uses of this plant.

Abstract
This study reports the first phenolics from Wissadula genus (Malvaceae) and the anti-inflammatory activity of 7,4'-di-O-methylisoscutellarein. Using chromatographic methods, five phenolic compounds were isolated from aerial parts of Wissadula periplocifolia (L.) C. Presl. The compounds were identified as 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, trans-cinnamic acid, tamgermanetin and 7,4'-di-O-methylisoscutellarein using spectroscopic methods. The flavone 7,4'-di-O-methylisoscutellarein showed anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting neutrophils recruitment in a mice model of pleurisy and by decreasing significantly the production of cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α.

Abstract
The neuronal and smooth muscle effects of a methanol extract prepared from the air-dried flowering aerial parts of Sideritis montana L. (SME) was tested in vitro on Guinea-pig ileum. The chemical composition of the investigated extract was analysed by HPLC-MS, and chrysoeriol, chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid were detected as main constituents. The isolated organ assay showed that S. montana extract caused an immediate contraction and a more slowly developing inhibitory response in the ileum. The SME-induced contractions were strongly inhibited by the acetylcholine muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine (0.5 μM), but not by either the Na+ channel blocker tetrodotoxin (TTX; 0.5 μM) or the histamine H1 receptor antagonist chloropyramine (0.5 μM). Selective desensitization of capsaicin-sensitive neurons by the sensory neuron stimulant and blocker capsaicin did not influence the contractile effect of SME. As to the spasmolytic effect, SME inhibited the effects of electrical field stimulation, exogenous acetylcholine, and histamine. These smooth muscle-relaxing effects were reversible in 40 min by repeated renewals of the bathing solution.
