Interaction effects of magnetized water irrigation and wounding stress on Cd phytoremediation effect of Arabidopsis halleri

In this study, the phytoremediation efficiency of Arabidopsis halleri L. in response to mechanical injury were compared between those irrigated with magnetized water and those irrigated with normal water. Under normal irrigation treatment, wounding stress increased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels in A. halleri leaves significantly, by 46.7-86.1% and 39.4-77.4%, respectively, relative to those in the intact tissues. In addition, wounding stresses decreased the content of Cd in leaves by 26.8-52.2%, relative to the control, indicating that oxidative damage in plant tissues was induced by mechanical injury, rather than Cd accumulation. There were no significant differences in MDA and H2O2 between A. halleri irrigated with magnetized water and with normal water under wounding conditions; however, the activities of catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the leaves of plants treated with magnetized water were significantly increased by 25.1-56.7%, 47.3-183.6%, and 44.2-109.4%, respectively. Notably, under the magnetic field, the phytoremediation effect of 30% wounded A. halleri nearly returned to normal levels. We find that irrigation with magnetized water is an economical pathway to improve the tolerance of A. halleri to inevitable mechanical injury and may recover its phytoremediation effect.

A novel type of biochar from chitinous Hermetia illucens waste with a built-in stimulating effect on plants and soil arthropods

The breeding of insects generates waste in the form of insect excrement and feed residues. In addition, a specific chitinous waste in the form of insect larvae and pupae exuvia is also left. Recent research tries to manage it, e.g., by producing chitin and chitosan, which are value-added products. The circular economy approach requires testing new, non-standard management methods that can develop products with unique properties. To date, the possibility of biochar production from chitinous waste derived from insects has not been evaluated. Here we show that the puparia of Hermetia illucens are suitable for biochar production, which in turn exhibits original characteristics. We found that the biochars have a high nitrogen level, which is rarely achievable in materials of natural origin without artificial doping. This study presents a detailed chemical and physical characterization of the biochars. Moreover, ecotoxicological analysis has revealed the biochars' stimulation effect on plant root growth and the reproduction of the soil invertebrate Folsomia candida, as well as the lack of a toxic effect on its mortality. This predisposes these novel materials with already built-in stimulating properties to be used in agronomy, for example as a carriers for fertilizers or beneficial bacteria.

Effects of magnetically treated Sedum alfredii seeds on the dissolved organic matter characteristics of Cd-contaminated soil during phytoextraction

The effects of magnetic field treatments on the two determining factors of phytoremediation, growth status and element uptake capacity, of Sedum alfredii Hance. have been thoroughly studied; however, minimal studies have been performed to determine the influence of the Cd hyperaccumulator S. alfredii, grown from magnetically treated seeds, on the dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics in its rhizosphere. A series of pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the variations in the DOM concentration and fractionations in the rhizosphere of S. alfredii treated with external magnetic fields. Compared with the untreated seeds, S. alfredii grown from magnetically treated seeds excreted more DOM in its rhizosphere. Additionally, the hydrophilic DOM fractionation proportion, which presented a greater capacity to mobilize Cd in the soil, increased from 42.7 % in the control sample to 47.2 % in the 150 mT magnetically treated S. alfredii sample. The water-soluble and exchangeable forms of Cd in the rhizosphere of the magnetically treated S. alfredii were significantly lower than those of the control sample. Furthermore, the Cd extraction capacity of DOM from the rhizosphere of the magnetically treated S. alfredii was greater than that of the control sample, thereby increasing the Cd uptake ability of the magnetically treated species. This study proves that a suitable magnetic field treatment can enhance the phytoremediation effect of S. alfredii, and reveals the mechanism of the phenomenon from the perspective of changes in soil DOM.

Enhancement of the Cd phytoremediation efficiency of Festuca arundinacea by sonic seed treatment

It has been reported that both naturally occurring and artificially created sounds can alter the physiological parameters of various plants. A series of experiments were designed in the present study to estimate the physiological responses and the variation in the Cd decontamination capacity of Festuca arundinacea under sonic wave treatments. Plant seeds were treated by sound waves of frequency 200, 300, 400, 500, and 1000 Hz, and the germinated seedlings were transplanted to Cd-polluted soil. The results showed that all the sonic treatments increased the whole plant dry weight of F. arundinacea compared with that of the control, and the highest value was observed in the 200 Hz treatment. The Cd content in below-ground and aerial tissues of the species increased with increasing frequency till 400 Hz, after which they became constant. A higher proportion of senescent and dead leaf tissues was observed in the high-frequency treatment (1000 Hz), and more Cd was transferred to these failing tissues. Therefore, in the 1000 Hz treatment, a significantly greater amount of Cd could be eliminated by harvesting the senescent and dead leaf tissues of the species compared with that of the other treatments. The concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the proportions of hydrophilic fractions which have a strong Cd affinity, in the rhizosphere soil of F. arundinacea increased with the increase in sound frequency. Cd extraction ability of DOM also increased with increasing frequency. This study indicated that a suitable sonic treatment can improve the phytoextraction efficiency of F. arundinacea, and also explained the mechanism from the perspective of the variations in soil DOM.

Effect of using Celosia argentea grown from seeds treated with a magnetic field to conduct Cd phytoremediation in drought stress conditions

The mechanisms of the stimulatory effect of external magnetic fields on plant growth have been revealed; however, the role of magnetic fields in the efficiency of phytoremediation with Celosia argentea grown under drought stress which results in detrimental influences on food security has not been reported. Therefore, this study evaluated the physiological responses of C. argentea to the interactions between exposure to a magnetic field and drought stress. Compared with a control, a drought treatment negatively affected the dry weight, transpiration rate, and Cd extraction efficiency of the species and caused oxidative damage in plant cells, as manifested by the increase in malondialdehyde levels and antioxidant enzyme activities. The biomass production, pigment levels, Cd content, and phytoremediation efficiency of the plant were positively affected by all magnetic field treatments compared to the control. All magnetic treatments, except those at 30 mT, alleviated the detrimental effects induced by a 10-day irrigation regime by enhancing the dry weight, chlorophyll content, and activities of antioxidant enzymes in the leaves of the plant. In terms of the interaction between pre-sowing magnetic field seed treatment and drought stress, a 100 mT treatment increased most of the measured parameters, particularly under a 3-day irrigation regime; this corresponded to the optimal phytoremediation efficiency. The results suggest that magnetic field treatment is a novel, economical, and practicable strategy by which to increase the efficiency of phytoremediation using C. argentea under drought stress.

Impacts of root pruning and magnetized water irrigation on the phytoremediation efficiency of Celosia argentea

Pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of magnetized water irrigation (100 mT) and root cutting (three pruning intensities) on phytoremediation efficiency of Celosia argentea. In the absence of magnetic field treatment, low root cutting intensity increased the dry weight of the below-ground and aerial parts of C. argentea. Moderate and severe cutting intensities decreased the biomass yield of the plant roots by 11.3% and 31.0%, and increased the dry weight of aerial parts by 75.9% and 27.6%, respectively, alleviating the detrimental effects of these pruning treatments on the plant roots. In the presence of magnetic field treatment, 10% and 25% of pruning treatments increased the dry weight of plant roots by 52.1% and 33.8%, and 33% pruning treatment decreased it by 14.1%. Under both irrigation treatments, low and moderate root cutting strategies did not affect the take up of Cd by the plant roots, while severe cutting decreased it significantly. Enzyme activities decreased with the increment of pruning intensity, and magnetic field can alleviate the negative impact, increasing the capacity of the root pruned species to scavenge the excessive ROS induced by the accumulated Cd. The results showed that root pruning enhanced the phytoremediation efficiency of C. argentea, and this effect was enhanced when combined with magnetized water irrigation.

Hermetia illucens exhibits bioaccumulative potential for 15 different elements - Implications for feed and food production

A new branch of the insect-based food and feed industry is intensively developing all over the world, the best proof of which is the recent change in legislation at the European level allowing the use of insect protein in the production of feed for aquaculture animals. Previous publications have proven that some heavy metals can be bioaccumulated in fly H. illucens (black soldier fly), even when the insect is raised on optimal feed with an acceptable heavy metal content. The purpose of this study was to determine the bioaccumulation potential of H. illucens in relation to micro- and macroelements, toxic elements and for the first time, selected non-essential elements from optimal feed. Our results showed that bioaccumulation of Ba, Bi, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mo, Se and Zn occurred in all stages of insect development and in puparia, while bioaccumulation of Al, As, Co, K, Pb and Si was not found. The highest bioaccumulation factors were obtained for Ca and Mn in puparia - 38 and 21 respectively. In addition, Ca, Cd, Ga, Mn, P and S were bioaccumulated only in some developmental stages of the insect. The results are discussed in the context of the safety of feed and food production from H. illucens.

White Mustard (Sinapis alba L.) Oil in Biodiesel Production: A Review

White mustard (Sinapis alba L.) seed oil is used for cooking, food preservation, body and hair revitalization, biodiesel production, and as a diesel fuel additive and alternative biofuel. This review focuses on biodiesel production from white mustard seed oil as a feedstock. The review starts by outlining the botany and cultivation of white mustard plants, seed harvest, drying and storage, and seed oil composition and properties. This is followed by white mustard seed pretreatments (shelling, preheating, and grinding) and processing techniques for oil recovery (pressing, solvent extraction, and steam distillation) from whole seeds, ground seed or kernels, and press cake. Novel technologies, such as aqueous, enzyme-assisted aqueous, supercritical CO2, and ultrasound-assisted solvent extraction, are also discussed. The main part of the review considers biodiesel production from white mustard seed oil, including fuel properties and performance. The economic, environmental, social, and human health risk/toxicological impacts of white mustard-based biodiesel production and use are also discussed.

Appraisal of immediate and late effects of mobile phone radiations at 2100 MHz on mitotic activity and DNA integrity in root meristems of Allium cepa

The present study evaluated the potential of 2100 MHz radiofrequency radiations to act as cytotoxic and genotoxic agent. Fresh onion (Allium cepa L.) roots were exposed to electromagnetic field radiations (EMF-r) for different durations (1 h and 4 h) and evaluated for mitotic index (MI), phase index, chromosomal aberrations, and DNA damage. DNA damage was investigated with the help of the comet assay by assessing various parameters like % head DNA (HDNA), % tail DNA (TDNA), tail moment (TM), and olive tail moment (OTM). Effects of EMF-r exposure were also compared with that of methyl methanesulfonate (MMS; 90 μM), which acted as a positive control. The post-exposure effects of EMF-r after providing the test plants with an acclimatization period of 24 h were also evaluated. Compared to the control, a significant increase in the MI and aberration percentage was recorded upon 4 h of exposure. However, no specific trend of phase index in response to exposure was detected. EMF-r exposure incited DNA damage with a significant decrease in HDNA accompanied by an increase in TDNA upon exposure of 4 h. However, TM and OTM did not change significantly upon exposure as compared to that of control. Analysis of the post-exposure effects of EMF-r did not show any significant change/recovery. Our data, thus, suggest the potential cytotoxic and genotoxic nature of 2100 MHz EMF-r. Our study bears great significance in view of the swiftly emergent EMF-r in the surrounding environment and their potential for inciting aberrations at the chromosomal level, thus posing a genetic hazard.

Hermetia illucens as a new and promising species for use in entomoremediation

This study investigated the use of Hermetia illucens (black soldier fly - BSF) larvae as a new species for use in entomoremediation. The H. illucens larvae effectively reduced the dry mass of polluted corn leaves by an average of 49% after 36days for both Cd and Zn (50mg·kg^-1), which is a better result than that, which can be obtained by one of the standard proposed pretreatments for biomass polluted after phytoextraction: composting. The presence of heavy metals did not significantly affect the dry mass utilization efficiency. Based on this, we proposed the use of H. illucens as a new post-harvest management method of phytoextraction-polluted biomass. Cadmium mostly accumulates in the puparium, while Zn accumulates in the adults. The high Cd content in the puparium further creates possibility of its application in the metal recovery process. It is also proposed that the general definition of entomoremediation be expanded.
