Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the relationship between diffusion tensor imaging indicators and brain network characteristics in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) with (CSVD + S) and without (CSVD-S) sleep disturbance. We explored the feasibility of using these imaging biomarkers to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying sleep disturbance in patients with CSVD. METHODS A total of 146 patients with CSVD and 84 healthy controls were included. Sleep quality was assessed using polysomnography and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Tract-based spatial statistics and graph theory were applied to compare white matter lesions and brain network characteristics, which were then used for backpropagation artificial neural network (BPANN) analysis. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the CSVD + S group showed a decrease in total sleep time and sleep efficiency, as well as higher values for sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, and non-rapid eye movement sleep stage 1. Both the CSVD + S and CSVD-S groups exhibited reduced fractional anisotropy and structural connectivity strength. However, the CSVD + S group showed increased mean diffusivity in affected fiber bundles (the anterior thalamic radiation, frontal occipital fasciculus, and superior longitudinal fasciculus) in key brain regions, such as the thalamus and frontal lobe, that regulate sleep and wakefulness. In addition, the CSVD + S group showed significant impairments in global, node, and small-world attributes. The BPANN model successfully predicted sleep disturbance in patients with CSVD. CONCLUSION Our findings support the possibility that white matter abnormalities in subcortical neural circuits and microstructural and functional changes in brain connections underly CSVD sleep disturbance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the status of sleep disorders and their association with comprehensive frailty in the community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING Six community healthcare centres in Xi'an City, Northwest China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 2647 community-dwelling older adults completed the study. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The primary outcomes included frailty and sleep disorders, measured with the Comprehensive Frailty Assessment Instrument and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), respectively. The secondary outcomes were potential factors associated with frailty. RESULTS The participants averaged 5.23±2.94 in the total score of the PSQI, with a poor sleep quality prevalence of 19.9%. Individuals with poor sleep quality are more likely to have mild and high frailty, with an OR of 1.64 and 2.81, respectively. Both shortened (<5 hours) and prolonged (>8 hours) sleep duration are associated with higher level of frailty. Poor overall sleep, poor subjective sleep quality, extended sleep latency, sleep disturbances, use of sleeping medication and daytime dysfunction were associated with higher level of frailty (with a correlational coefficient of 0.237, 0.201, 0.223, 0.197, 0.087 and 0.378, respectively). CONCLUSION Sleep disorders are common problems among community-dwelling older adults, the severity of which rises with the increase in frailty level. Poor overall sleep quality, poor subjective sleep quality, extended sleep latency, sleep disturbances, daytime dysfunction and abnormal sleep duration are associated with frailty.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep disturbance is one of the most prevalent health issues among community-dwelling older adults. This systematic review aims to assess the prevalence of sleep disturbances among these adults living in the community and identify associated risk factors. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases. We screened studies focusing on the prevalence of sleep disturbances in community-dwelling older adults (≥ 60 years). A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled prevalence of sleep disturbances. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were conducted to investigate sources of heterogeneity, and funnel plots were used to assess publication bias. RESULTS Our systematic review included 41 articles, encompassing a total sample of 71,607 participants from 13 countries. The pooled prevalence of sleep disturbances, measured by PSQI, was found to be 45% (95% CI: 40-50%). Notably, the prevalence of sleep disturbances was significantly higher among individuals aged 70 years and older (48%) compared to those aged 60 years and older (41%). Common risk factors for sleep disturbances included depression, advanced age, females, chronic diseases (hypertension, coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and poor external support (poor social support and poor family relationships). CONCLUSION The findings highlight the necessity for comprehensive assessments and management strategies targeting this population with depression, advanced age, females, hypertension, coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and poor external support while also underscoring the significance of healthcare planners and policymakers in enhancing sleep quality for older adults.

Abstract
Objective To assess the sleep status and prevalence rate of the elderly in southeast coastal areas of China, and analyze related factors. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among elderly individuals in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, situated in the southeast coastal areas of China, using a multi-stage random sampling method. A total of 903 elderly people aged ≥ 60 years were selected for the survey. The questionnaire aimed to assess their sleep status using PSQI and to evaluate related factors using Self-designed General Information and Health Behavior Questionnaires, SAS, GDS-15, ESS, AD8, SHAP, WHOQOL-BREF, among other tools. Logistic regression was applied to analyze the influencing factors of sleep disorders. Results Among the 903 elderly individuals who participated in the survey, 316 cases (35.0%) had a PSQI score > 7. Females exhibited a higher prevalence rate of poor subjective sleep quality (24.9% vs 17.6%) and difficulty falling asleep (32.8% vs 22.5%) compared to males. Drinking green tea (OR = 0.1.841, 95% CI, 1.220-2.777, P <0.05) had the strongest association with poor sleep. The duration of nap time ranging from 30 to 90 minutes (OR = 0.492, 95% CI= 0.340-0.713, P < 0.001) and specifically a 90-minute nap (OR = 0.441, 95% CI = 0.234-0.832, P < 0.05) were both significantly associated with a decreased risk of experiencing poor sleep quality. Conclusion The prevalence in this population is 35%. Several factors contribute to this prevalence, including tea consumption, anxiety, daytime sleepiness, cognitive decline, environmental influences, awareness of sleep health, knowledge about sleep, and detrimental habits. Specifically, the consumption of green tea negatively impacts sleep quality, while taking naps longer than 30 minutes is associated with a reduced risk of poor sleep. These findings can inform the development of targeted preventive strategies and interventions aimed at mitigating sleep disorders in the elderly population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association between sleep patterns and sleep factors (sleep duration, trouble sleeping, sleep disorder) and the risk of depression in older adults. METHODS A total of 5636 participants (2754 men and 2882 women) aged 60 years and older from the 2007-2014 waves of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Sleep duration, sleep problems, and sleep disorders were assessed in the home by trained interviewers using the Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) system. The combined sleep behaviours were referred to as 'sleep patterns (healthy, intermediate and poor)', with a 'healthy sleep pattern' defined as sleeping 7-9 h per night with no self-reported trouble sleeping or sleep disorders. Intermediate and poor sleep patterns indicated 1 and 2-3 sleep problems, respectively. Baseline characteristics of participants analysed using one-way logistic regression. Logistic multiple linear regression was used to assess the association of sleep factors and sleep patterns with the risk of depressive symptoms.Conduct subgroup analyses to ensure robustness of findings. RESULTS The overall prevalence of depression was 7.7% among the 5636 participants analysed, with the rate of depression in older women being 1.6 times higher than in older men. The prevalence of depression was higher in older adults with intermediate sleep pattern than in older adults with healthy sleep pattern (OR: 2.28, 95% CI: 1.71-3.03, p < 0.001). The prevalence of depression was higher in older adults with poor sleep pattern than in older adults with healthy sleep pattern (OR: 5.60, 95% CI: 4.25-7.39, p < 0.001). The findings were robust after controlling for sleep items in the PHQ-9. CONCLUSION This nationally representative survey showed a relationship between sleep patterns and depression in older adults. However, the study population was limited to Americans, and we recommend continued investigation of the causal relationship and mechanisms between the two in the future, and further expansion of data sources in order to assess the applicability of the findings.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to examine the association between home-based community care services (HBCCS) and mental health in older adults and specifically analyzes rural-urban differences in the association. Methods This cross-sectional study enrolled 852 older adults from Zhejiang Province, China. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), University of California Los Angeles 3-item Loneliness Scale (UCLA-3), and the Mental Health (MH) component score of the 36-item Short Form (SF-36) were used to measure self-reported mental health status. Four categories of community care services were examined: daily, medical, social and recreational, and spiritual comfort. Satisfaction with community care services was assessed using self-reported measures. We used a multiple linear regression model. Results Satisfaction with daily care services, social and recreational services, and spiritual comfort services in rural older adults was significantly higher than in urban older adults (p = 0.016, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, respectively). Rural older adults reported lower scores on the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and UCLA-3 than urban older adults (p < 0.001, p = 0.003, p = 0.001, respectively) and had significantly higher scores on the SF-36 MH than urban older adults (p < 0.001). Among urban older adults, medical care services satisfaction was negatively related to the PHQ-9 and UCLA-3 scores (β = -0.296, p = 0.004; β = -0.447, p = 0.009, respectively). A lower UCLA-3 score was associated with higher levels of satisfaction with social and recreational services and with spiritual comfort services (β = -0.426, p = 0.010; β = -0.523, p = 0.002, respectively). A higher level of spiritual comfort services satisfaction was associated with a lower SF-36 MH score (β = 0.646, p < 0.001). Among rural older adults, medical care services satisfaction was negatively related to the GAD-7 score (β = -0.327, p = 0.028). Conclusion Home-based community care services satisfaction was positively associated with older adults' mental health status in Zhejiang Province. More attention should be paid to maintaining relevant satisfaction with HBCCS to ensure positive mental health among rural and urban older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND China has the highest incidence of stroke worldwide because of a high rate of recurrence of ischemic stroke, which has significant negative impacts on the physical and mental health of patients. However, little research has been devoted to the psychological capital of ischemic stroke patients. PURPOSE To investigate the psychological capital of ischemic stroke patients, and uses latent profile analysis to identify the potential profiles of the psychological capital among patients as well as to explore heterogeneity within subgroups and the factors influencing it. METHODS A survey was distributed among and completed by 427 ischemic stroke patients from November 2023 to March 2024. Four types of questionnaires were administered: the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ-26), Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS), Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), and a general information questionnaire. RESULTS Three latent profiles of the psychological capital of ischemic stroke patients were identified: the deficient psychological capital group(19.7%), medium psychological capital group(52.5%), and affluent psychological capital group(27.9%). Compared with the deficient psychological capital group, the results of a disordered multi-classification logistic regression analysis showed that the factors influencing the participants of the medium psychological capital group were their marital status (married OR = 1.081, 95% CI: 1.163-7.468, p = 0.023), perceived stress (OR = -0.2, 95% CI: 0.769-0.872, p < 0.001), and insomnia (OR = -0.273, 95% CI: 0.696-0.833, p < 0.001). The factors influencing the affluent psychological capital group were perceived stress (OR = -0.334, 95% CI: 0.664-0.773, p < 0.001) and insomnia (OR = -0.46, 95% CI: 0.56-0.712, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Three potential categories of psychological capital in ischemic stroke patients were identified. Sex, marital status, education, perceived stress, and insomnia were found to be associated with psychological capital in stroke patients. Future research should explore other determinants of psychological capital in ischemic stroke patients to formulate interventions that can improve their psychological capital.

Abstract
Purpose Many shift nurses experience poor sleep quality, and the effect on nurses' cognitive function remains unclear. The study aims to investigate sleep status and explore its association with cognitive function. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Fujian, China between March and September 2022. By convenience sampling method, 588 shift nurses participated in this study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Bergen Shift Work Sleep Questionnaire (BSWSQ) were used to assess sleep quality, while the Chinese version of Ascertain Dementia-8 (AD-8) was used to evaluate cognitive function. A PSQI score ≤7 is classified as good sleep quality, and a score >7 indicates poor sleep quality. An AD-8 score≥ 2 is considered indicative of memory impairment. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the association between sleep status and memory impairment. Results A total of 310 (52.6%) participants presented poor sleep quality. Among them, 52.2% of participants had day shift-related sleep problems, 45.9% had evening shift-related sleep problems, 61.9% had night shift-related sleep problems, and 15.0% reported rest-day/vacation-related sleep problems. The prevalence of poor sleep quality and each shift-related sleep problem in the memory impairment group were higher than in the normal memory group (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that poor sleep quality (OR=2.073, 95% CI: 1.398~3.072), evening shift-related sleep problems (OR=1.707, 95% CI: 1.028~2.835), night shift-related sleep problems (OR=1.859, 95% CI:1.104~3.129), and rest-day/vacation-related sleep problems (OR=2.069, 95% CI:1.170~3.659) was significantly associated with memory impairment. Conclusion This study highlights the prevalence of poor sleep quality among clinical nurses and identifies poor sleep quality and shift-related sleep problems (excluding day shift) as risk factors for memory impairment. Nurse managers should prioritize sleep quality and focus on cognitive function to enhance nurses' occupational health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent research has revealed that today's older adults report more sleep problems than their predecessors, a trend compounded by expanding social stratification. As such, this study examined the demographic, socioeconomic, and health correlates of sleep quality and sleep duration among community-dwelling older adults in India. METHODS The current study sample draws on data from 7118 respondents aged 50 years and over participating in the World Health Organization's Study on global AGEing and adult health (WHO-SAGE) wave-2 dataset. Sleep quality (good, moderate, and poor) and sleep duration (in hours and minutes) were self-reported. Adjusted multivariable logistic regression models were employed to examine the associations between sleep quality and sleep duration and several demographic, socioeconomic, and health indicators. RESULTS A total of 12.84% and 36.1% of older adults reported long (> 8 h) and short (< 7 h) sleep, respectively. Older adults with primary education had lower odds of poor sleep [aOR: 0.85, CI: 0.73-0.99] than peers with no formal education. The odds of poor sleep were lower among those in higher wealth quintiles than those in the poorest quintile. Older adults with higher education had higher odds of short sleep [aOR: 1.36, CI: 1.06-1.74], and those with primary education had lower odds of long sleep [aOR: 0.70, CI: 0.54-0.91] than those without formal education (base category: age-appropriate sleep, i.e., 7-8 h). Older adults who were widowed had lower odds of both short [aOR: 0.82, CI: 0.68-0.98] and long sleep [aOR:0.74, CI: 0.58-0.95] compared to those who were currently married. Older individuals with adequate nutritional intake reported lower odds of short [aOR:0.59, CI: 0.49-0.72] and higher odds of long sleep [aOR:1.52, CI: 1.20-1.93] relative to their counterparts. Older adults who reported chronic conditions and body pain had higher odds of poor sleep and short sleep than their counterparts. CONCLUSIONS We identified significant associations between several unmodifiable factors, including age, education, and marital status, and modifiable factors such as dietary intake, body pain, and pre-existing chronic ailments, and sleep quality and sleep duration. Our findings can assist health care providers and practitioners in developing a more holistic and empathic approach to care. Moreover, that several demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related factors are consequential for older adults' sleep health suggests that early detection through screening programs and community-based interventions is vital to improving sleep among older Indians who are most susceptible to sleep problems.

Abstract
Objectives Sleep is an indispensable part of human health, which can help us to restore physical strength, enhance immunity and maintain nervous system stability. The relationship between sleep quality and cognitive dysfunction is unclear, especially at the community population level. This study aims to explore the association between sleep quality and cognitive dysfunction. Methods A total of 5,224 community residents were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Cognitive function was assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Sleep quality was assessed by the multidimensional sleep questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between sleep quality and cognitive dysfunction. The adjusted models took into account relevant demographic, clinical, and sleep variables. Results A total of 3,106 participants were enrolled in this study, of whom 463 (15%) had cognitive dysfunction. Total sleep duration, staying up, sleep latency, number of awakenings, and history of sleep medications were associated with cognitive dysfunction in unadjusted models, and these effects were consistent after adjustment. First, those who slept 6-7.9 h per day (OR = 0.57, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.80, p = 0.001) had a lower risk for cognitive dysfunction compared to those who slept less than 6 h per day. Second, participants who stayed up more than 10 times over the 3 months (OR = 1.90, 95% CI 1.20 to 3.00, p = 0.006) were more likely to suffer cognitive dysfunction than those who never stayed up. Third, we also found that participants with sleep latencies of 16-30 min were less likely to experience cognitive dysfunction than those with sleep latencies of less than 16 min after adjusting confounders (OR = 0.33, 95% CI 0.23 to 0.47, p < 0.001). Fourth, participants who woke up once (OR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.19 to 2.30, p = 0.003) and three or more times (OR = 2.34, 95% CI 1.25 to 4.36, p = 0.008) after falling asleep had a higher risk than those who did not wake up at night. Last, participants taking sleep medication (OR = 2.97, 95% CI 1.19 to 7.45, p = 0.020) were more vulnerable to cognitive dysfunction, relative to participants without taking any medications. Conclusion Our results suggest that after adjustment for potential confounding variables, poor sleep quality is associated with cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
AIMS Insomnia is a common complaint among older adults. However, the comparative prevalence between older adults living in urban versus rural areas remains under-researched. This study aims to validate the overall prevalence of insomnia among older adults in Indonesia and investigate the comparative prevalence between older adults living in urban and rural areas. METHODS The data were derived from the 2018 Indonesian Basic Health Research Study. We included a total of 93,830 older participants aged > 60 years old who completed the insomnia questions. The prevalence and regression models were analyzed using the SPSS software. RESULTS The insomnia group has a higher age compared to the non-insomnia group (P < 0.05). Insomnia is more prevalent in females compared to males (P < 0.05). When classified by age groups (60-64, 65-69, 70-74, and > 75 years old), the prevalence of insomnia was 20%, 21%, 23%, and 24%, respectively. The prevalence of insomnia among older individuals living in rural areas was higher compared to those living in urban areas. In addition, increasing age, being female, unemployed, having comorbidities, being less active, and drinking alcohol are associated with insomnia symptoms. CONCLUSION The findings of this study indicated that the prevalence of insomnia is high among older adults in Indonesia, with older adults living in rural areas exhibiting a higher prevalence compared to those living in urban areas. Our findings strengthen the importance of sleep management in clinical or community settings.

Abstract
This review was performed to determine sleep disturbance prevalence in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched from inception to January 20, 2024. Fifty-two studies fulfilling the eligibility criteria were included. However, six of these studies were excluded from data synthesis due to poor methodological quality. The subjective sleep disturbance prevalence among all individuals with MCI was 35.8 % (95 % CI: 31.9-39.7) across 44 studies, and the objective sleep disturbance prevalence was 46.3 % (95 % CI: 36.3-56.3) across 6 studies. Five studies examined TST and WASO, while three assessed SE. Among all potential objective assessments of sleep disturbance prevalence, only TST, WASO, and SE could be meta-analyzed in MCI because of the limited number of studies available. The estimated sleep disturbance prevalence differed significantly according to measurement method, geographical region, and research design. However, the data source did not significantly influence prevalence estimates. In meta-regression analysis, publication year, participant age, percentage of females, and study quality did not predict prevalence. As subjective and objective sleep disturbances are common in people with MCI, effective intervention strategies should be developed to alleviate them.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative sleep disturbance (PSD) is prevalent in perioperative patients,and has significant impact on postoperative recovery and prognosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of desflurane maintenance on postoperative sleep quality, in order to optimize patients' perioperative sleep management. METHOD A total of 118 patients undergoing elective breast surgery were randomized to receive either desflurane-based volatile anesthesia (desflurane group) or propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (propofol group) for anesthesia maintenance. The primary outcome was the quality of sleep, which was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) on 3 days after operation (POD3). Secondary outcomes were PSQI on postoperative day 7 (POD7) and 30 (POD30), and postoperative anxiety, depression, and pain score, as well as objective sleep parameters including total sleep time (TST), WASO (Wakefulness after sleep onset), REM (Rapid eye movement) and NREM (Non-rapid Eye Movement) measured by Fitbit Charge 2TM during the initial 3 postoperative days. RESULTS The global PSQI scores on POD3 in the desflurane group was non-inferior to that in the propofol group [mean (SD) 8.47 (3.46) vs. 7.65 (3.16); mean difference (95 % CI) 0.82 (-0.43, 2.07); p < 0.001 for non-inferiority]. There were no significant differences in PSQI scores on POD3 and POD7. In addition, the score of anxiety, depression, and pain on the 3rd, 7th, and 30th day after surgery have no significant differences between the propofol and the desflurane group, respectively. The postoperative NREM was higher in the desflurane group than that in the propofol group. CONCLUSION The effects of desflurane-based volatile anesthesia maintenance on postoperative sleep quality is not inferior to that of propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia, and these two drugs may have different effects on the sleep structure. Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep disorders are becoming more prevalent in hospitalized patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We aimed to investigate the risk factors for sleep disorders in hospitalized patients with AMI, then develop and validate a prediction nomogram for the risk of sleep disorders. METHODS Clinical data were collected from patients with AMI hospitalized in our hospital from January 2020 to June 2023. All patients were divided into the training group and the validation group with a ratio of 7:3 in sequential order. The LASSO regression analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to screen potential risk factors for sleep disorders. The concordance index (C-index), calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were plotted. RESULTS A total of 256 hospitalized patients with AMI were enrolled. Patients were divided into the training group (180) and the validation group (76) according to a scale of 7:3. Of the 256 patients, 90 patients (35.16%) suffered from sleep disorders, and 33 patients (12.89%) needed hypnotics. The variables screened by LASSO regression included age, smoking, NYHA class, anxiety status at admission, depression status at admission, and strangeness of environment. A nomogram model was established by incorporating the risk factors selected. The C-index, calibration curve, and DCA showed good predictive performance. CONCLUSIONS We identified six clinical characteristics as predictors of sleep disorders in hospitalized patients with AMI. It helps nurses make appropriate decisions in clinical practice.

Abstract
Sleep quality significantly affects the quality of life of older persons. Therefore, this study explored the relationship between sleep quality and living environment of older persons in China to provide a theoretical basis for therapies to alleviate sleep disorders in older persons. A total of 6211 subjects > 60 years of age in Anhui Province, China, were evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and a self-reported questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that living alone (OR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.09-1.46) and living in a rural area (OR = 1.19, 95% CI 1.06-1.34) were significantly associated with a high incidence of sleep disorders in older persons. Living near a park or foot paths suitable for exercise or walking was significantly associated with a lower incidence of sleep disorders in older persons (OR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.77-0.96). Individual factors such as female sex (OR = 1.30, 95% CI 1.14-1.48) and depression (OR = 2.80, 95% CI 2.47-3.19) were also associated with sleep quality in older persons. These data indicate a correlation exists between living environment and sleep quality.

Abstract
The understanding of the prevalence of sleep problems in older adults can provide a broad and reliable perspective into the occurrence of such issues among older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the worldwide prevalence of sleep problems in community-dwelling older adults. Studies that provide information on the prevalence of sleep problems in community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years) were screened between December 2022 and March 2023. A total of 20,379 studies were identified in database searches, from which 252 were included in this review. These studies covered the last 35 years (from 1988 to 2023) and pooled a sample of 995,544 participants from 36 countries. The most frequent sleep problem worldwide was obstructive sleep apnea (46.0%), followed by poor sleep quality (40.0%), other sleep problems (37.0%), insomnia (29.0%), and excessive daytime sleepiness (19.0%). No significant difference in the prevalence estimates of all sleep problems was observed between the sexes. This systematic review and meta-analysis showed a high prevalence of some sleep problems, mainly obstructive sleep apnea, poor sleep quality, and other sleep problems. Our estimates can be useful for managers and policymakers in planning healthcare strategies for sleep problems aimed at the older population.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the prevalence of self-reported sleep disturbances in people living with HIV considering the effects of age, depression, anxiety, CD4 cell counts, time since HIV diagnosis, study region, and the instruments used to measure sleep disturbances. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, and EMBASE to include eligible articles. In this meta-analysis of 43 studies, the pooled prevalence of self-reported sleep disturbances was 52.29% (95% confidence interval 47.69-56.87). The subgroup analyses revealed that variations in the sleep measurements and study region significantly contributed to the observed heterogeneity. In the meta-regression analyses, higher proportions of participants with depression or anxiety and longer times since HIV diagnosis were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of self-reported sleep disturbances after adjusting for mean age. Our findings emphasise the substantial burden of sleep disturbances in people living with HIV and identified comorbid depression and anxiety and the time since HIV diagnosis as significant moderators. These results underscore the importance of considering these factors when designing tailored screening programmes for high-risk patients and implementing early interventions to prevent and mitigate sleep disturbances in people living with HIV.

Abstract
The prevalence of locomotive syndrome naturally increases with age, but approximately half of nonelderly individuals also meet the criteria for locomotive syndrome, suggesting that even younger people need to pay attention to their own health status. Sleep is important for physical, cognitive, and psychological health. Some individuals with poor sleep quality may be at risk of developing negative health status. Although the effects of sleep hygiene strategies for elderly individuals have been well investigated, optimal nonpharmacological sleep hygiene strategies for improving sleep quality in nonelderly individuals has not been identified. We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomized controlled trials aimed to elucidate the effects of various nonpharmacological interventions on sleep quality in nonelderly individuals and to identify the optimal intervention. Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, and Scopus were comprehensively searched. We identified 27 studies focusing on the effects of various nonpharmacological sleep hygiene strategies in nonelderly individuals, and 24 studies were applied into NMA. The present results showed that resistance training was the most effective intervention for improving sleep quality in nonelderly individuals. In addition, this study revealed the effects of nonpharmacological interventions, such as physical activity, nutritional intervention, as well as exercise interventions. This is the first report that utilized NMA to compare the effects of various nonpharmacological interventions on sleep quality in nonelderly individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the associations between perceived neighborhood conditions and older Chinese adults' sleep problems, and whether these associations are mediated by psychosocial factors and moderated by urban-rural residence. METHODS Data were from the World Health Organization Study on global Ageing and Adult Health. We used OLS, binary, and multinomial logistic regression analyses. Karlson-Holm-Breen decomposition method was used to test mediation effects. RESULTS Positively perceived neighborhood social cohesion was associated with fewer insomnia symptoms and decreased odds of poor sleep quality, sleepiness, lethargy, and short sleep duration. Positively perceived neighborhood safety was related to decreased risks of poor sleep quality and sleepiness. Depression and perceived control partially mediated the effects of perceived neighborhood on sleep. Furthermore, the protective effects of neighborhood cohesion against sleep problems were more pronounced among older urban adults than their rural counterparts. DISCUSSION Interventions that make neighborhoods safer and more integrated will improve late-life sleep health.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a novel dietary supplement, including melatonin and magnesium, delivered via coffee pods on sleep quality, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and body composition in individuals with poor sleep quality disturbances. Using a double-blinded, randomized, crossover trial, we recruited 35 participants to a 4-week intervention with both supplements (1.9 mg melatonin + 200 mg elemental magnesium before sleep) and placebo conditions, considering a 7d washout period between treatments. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was applied, RMR (kcal) was measured using indirect calorimetry (canopy ventilated open-circuit system) and body composition was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Decreases in PSQI and anger - hostility scores, as well as in energy intake and fat mass, were observed (p < 0.05) for both conditions, from baseline to the end of each 4-week intervention. Differences between conditions were also observed for these parameters along with energy spent in activity, number of sedentary breaks, sleep efficiency, latency time, time in bed, total sleep time, awakening time, and movement index (p < 0.05) favouring the supplement condition. However, the final PSQI questionnaire scores still indicated poor sleep quality on average (PSQI > 5), in both conditions, with no changes regarding RMR. A melatonin-magnesium supplement, in a coffee pod format, showed improvements in sleep quality in otherwise healthy individuals with sleep disturbances, however PSQI questionnaire scores still indicated poor quality on average (PSQI > 5).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Frailty is a pervasive clinical syndrome among the older population. It is associated with an increased risk of diverse adverse health outcomes including death. The association between sleep duration and frailty remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep duration and frailty in community-dwelling Korean older adults and to determine whether this relationship is sex-dependent. METHODS Data on 3,953 older adults aged ≥ 65 years were obtained from the 7th (2016-2018) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Frailty was defined using the Fried phenotype with criteria customized for the KNHANES dataset. Self-reported sleep duration was classified as short sleep duration (≤ 6 h), middle sleep duration (6.1-8.9 h), and long sleep duration (≥ 9 h). Complex samples multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS The percentage of male participants with short, middle, and long sleep durations was 34.9%, 62.1%, and 16.8%, respectively, while that of female participants was 26.1%, 59.2%, and 14.7%. The prevalence of frailty in the middle sleep duration group was lower than that in the short and long sleep duration groups in both men (short, 14.7%; middle, 14.2%; long, 24.5%; p < 0.001) and women (short, 42.9%; middle, 27.6%; long, 48.6%; p < 0.001). Both short (OR = 2.61, 95% CI = 1.91 - 4.83) and long (OR = 2.57, 95% CI = 1.36 - 3.88) sleep duration groups had a significantly higher OR for frailty than the middle sleep duration group even after adjusting for confounding variables among women, but not among men. CONCLUSION Short and long sleep durations were independently associated with frailty in community-dwelling Korean older adult women. Managing sleep problems among women should be prioritized, and effective interventions to prevent frailty should be developed accordingly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have revealed the effects of childhood adversity, anxiety, and negative coping on sleep quality in older adults, but few studies have focused on the association between childhood adversity and sleep quality in rural older adults and the potential mechanisms of this influence. In this study, we aim to evaluate sleep quality in rural older adults, analyze the impact of adverse early experiences on their sleep quality, and explore whether anxiety and negative coping mediate this relationship. METHODS Data were derived from a large cross-sectional study conducted in Deyang City, China, which recruited 6,318 people aged 65 years and older. After excluding non-agricultural household registration and lack of key information, a total of 3,873 rural older adults were included in the analysis. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to analyze the relationship between childhood adversity and sleep quality, and the mediating role of anxiety and negative coping. RESULTS Approximately 48.15% of rural older adults had poor sleep quality, and older adults who were women, less educated, widowed, or living alone or had chronic illnesses had poorer sleep quality. Through structural equation model fitting, the total effect value of childhood adversity on sleep quality was 0.208 (95% CI: 0.146, 0.270), with a direct effect value of 0.066 (95% CI: 0.006, 0.130), accounting for 31.73% of the total effect; the total indirect effect value was 0.142 (95% CI: 0.119, 0.170), accounting for 68.27% of the total effect. The mediating effects of childhood adversity on sleep quality through anxiety and negative coping were significant, with effect values of 0.096 (95% CI: 0.078, 0.119) and 0.024 (95% CI: 0.014, 0.037), respectively. The chain mediating effect of anxiety and negative coping between childhood adversity and sleep quality was also significant, with an effect value of 0.022 (95% CI: 0.017, 0.028). CONCLUSIONS Anxiety and negative coping were important mediating factors for rural older adult's childhood adversity and sleep quality. This suggests that managing anxiety and negative coping in older adults may mitigate the negative effects of childhood adversity on sleep quality.

Abstract
Despite the well-documented detrimental health effects of elder abuse, scholars have rarely considered whether and how family members' abuse of older adults is associated with sleep. Data from the 2018 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (N = 8110) were used to assess the association between elder abuse committed by family members and sleep quality, and how psychological well-being (depression and loneliness) mediates and gender moderates the above association. Results indicated that those who experienced family members' abuse were more likely to report poor sleep quality than their non-abused counterparts. Depression and loneliness partially mediated the elder abuse-sleep relationship. Furthermore, among those who experienced one elder abuse, older women had a higher risk of poor sleep quality than their male counterparts. However, two or more elder abuse experiences had similar negative effects on older women and men. Preventing elder abuse and improving psychological well-being is critical to promoting late-life sleep.

Abstract
Background Postoperative delirium (POD) is prevalent in craniotomy patients and is associated with high mortality. Sleep disturbances are receiving increasing attention from clinicians as associated risk factors for postoperative complications. This study aimed to determine the impact of preoperative sleep disturbances on POD in craniotomy patients. Methods We recruited 130 patients undergoing elective craniotomy for intracranial tumors between May 1st and December 30th, 2022. Preoperative subjective sleep disturbances were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index on the day of admission. We also measured objective perioperative sleep patterns using a dedicated sleep monitoring device 3 days before and 3 days after the surgery. POD was assessed twice daily using the Confusion Assessment Model for the Intensive Care Unit within the first week after craniotomy. Results Preoperative sleep disturbances were diagnosed in 49% of the study patients, and POD was diagnosed in 22% of all the study patients. Sleep disturbances were an independent risk factor for POD (OR: 2.709, 95% CI: 1.020-7.192, P = 0.045). Other risk factors for POD were age (OR: 3.038, 95% CI: 1.195-7.719, P = 0.020) and the duration of urinary catheterization (OR: 1.246, 95% CI: 1.025-1.513, P = 0.027). Perioperative sleep patterns (including sleep latency, deep sleep duration, frequency of awakenings, apnea-hypopnea index, and sleep efficiency) were significantly associated with POD. Conclusion This study demonstrated that preoperative sleep disturbances predispose patients undergoing craniotomy to POD, also inferred a correlation between perioperative sleep patterns and POD. The targeted screening and intervention specifically for sleep disturbances during the perioperative period are immensely required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether sleep quality and duration assessed from multiple domains, either individually or in combination, are strongly associated with mortality risk in older adults remains unelucidated. We aimed to clarify these relationships. METHODS We enrolled 7,668 older (age ≥65 years) Japanese adults in the Kyoto-Kameoka prospective cohort study who provided valid responses to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in a mail-in survey. Sleep quality and duration were classified into six groups using the previously validated PSQI: short sleep duration (SSD: <360 min/day)/sleep disturbance (SD: ≥5.5 PSQI points), n = 701; SSD/non-sleep disturbance (NSD: <5.5 PSQI points), n = 100; optimal sleep duration (OSD: 360-480 min/day)/NSD, n = 1,863; OSD/SD, n = 2,113; long sleep duration (LSD: >480 min/day)/NSD, n = 1,972; LSD/SD, n = 919. Mortality data were collected from February 15, 2012, to November 30, 2016. We evaluated the relationship between all-cause mortality risk and sleep quality and duration (and their combinations) using a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model that included baseline covariates. RESULTS The median follow-up period was 4.75 years (34,826 person-years), with a total of 616 deaths. After adjusting for confounders, compared with other groups, SSD/SD and LSD/SD had the highest hazard ratio (HR) of mortality (SSD/SD: HR 1.56; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-2.19; SSD/NSD: HR 1.27; 95% CI, 0.47-3.48; OSD/NSD: reference; OSD/SD: HR 1.20; 95% CI, 0.91-1.59; LSD/NSD: HR 1.35; 95% CI, 1.03-1.77; LSD/SD: HR 1.83; 95% CI, 1.37-2.45). However, mortality risk was not associated with the interaction between sleep quality and duration. CONCLUSION Older adults with sleep disturbances involving SSD and LSD have a strong positive association with mortality risk, suggesting an additive effect between sleep quality and duration.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is a scarcity of summarizing data on the epidemiology of insomnia in older persons, especially when diagnosed with international criteria. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and correlates of insomnia disorder in older persons, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). METHODS Through PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science (WoS), we searched for relevant articles published before June 28, 2023. The risk of bias was weighed using the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI's) critical appraisal checklist for studies reporting prevalence data. For our analyses, we used a random-effect model, with subgroup analyses, meta-regression, and sensitivity analyses to explore potential sources of heterogeneity. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. RESULTS We included 18,270 participants across 16 studies. The male/female ratio was 0.89 (12 studies), and the mean age varied from 65.9 to 83.1 years (8 studies). The pooled prevalence of insomnia was 19.6% (95% CI = [12.3%; 28.3%]), with substantial heterogeneity. This prevalence fluctuated according to the sample size, the minimal age for inclusion, and the study quality, considering that the risk of bias was moderate for most of studies. There was a publication bias, with a very low level of certainty. Insomnia disorder was associated with the female gender, depression, anxiety, and somatic illnesses notably cardiovascular, respiratory, and painful ones. CONCLUSION Nearly one in every five old individuals was considered to have insomnia disorder, which was associated with the gender and the existence of mental health and/or somatic conditions. REGISTRATION We registered the protocol in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) with registration number: CRD42022344675.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have suggested a possible association between metals and sleep disorders. This study aimed to explore the association between Zn, Cu, Se, Mg and Ca and sleep disorders in single and multi-metal co-exposure models. METHODS Logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline model (RCS), Quantile g computation (Q-gcomp), Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to investigate the association between metal levels and sleep disorders. RESULTS Logistic regression showed that in the total population, the second, third, and fourth quartile Zn concentration exhibited a lower risk of sleep disorders compared with the first quartile, with odds ratios (ORs) of 0.783, 0.711, and 0.704, respectively. Compared with Zn/Cu and Zn/Se in the first quartile, the third and fourth quartiles showed a lower risk of sleep disorders. In the 30-59 years group, the risk of sleep disorders was 0.699 times greater for the fourth quartile Mg concentration than that for the first quartile. The risk of sleep disorders in Mg/Ca concentration in the third quartile was 0.737 times higher than in the first quartile. Q-gcomp, WQS, and BKMR model analysis showed the negative overall effect of mixtures of the five metals on sleep disorders, with Zn being the largest contributor. CONCLUSION Our study showed that plasma Zn, Mg, Zn/Cu, Zn/Se, and Mg/Ca reduced the risk of sleep disorders, and the combined effect of multiple metals was negatively associated with the risk of sleep disorders, with Zn being the largest contributor to this relationship.

Abstract
Children in institutional care have a high risk to experience childhood adversities (CAs), with consequences for physical and mental well-being. The long-term effects of CAs on the brain, including consequences for neuronal plasticity and sleep, are poorly understood. This study examined the interplay between stress (including CAs), sleep, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a prominent marker for neuronal plasticity. Participants (N = 131, mean age = 26.3±3.4 years, 40 females) with residential youth-care history completed questionnaires measuring CAs (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, CTQ), psychological well-being (World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index, WHO-5), and sleep disturbances (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory, PSQI). Hair cortisol and serum BDNF concentration were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The analyses were conducted by using bootstrap regression models. There was no association of stress parameters or sleep with BDNF concentration. However, we found a significant association of CAs and well-being with sleep disturbances. Last, we found an association between CAs and BDNF in sleep-healthy but not sleep-disturbed participants. Our findings indicated a role of sleep disturbance in the association between stress and BDNF. Still, further studies are warranted using vulnerable groups at-risk to understand long-term effects on mental health and sleep.

Abstract
Background Nature therapy can significantly benefit the physiology and psychology of middle-aged and older people, but previous studies have focused on forest environments. The restoration potential of rural environments in urban fringe areas, which are more accessible to older people on a daily basis, has not been fully studied. This study assessed the effects of nature therapy on the physical and mental health of older women in a rural setting (locally known as Linpan) in the urban fringe area of Chengdu, China. Methods We recruited a total of 60 older women (65.3 ± 5.5 years old) living in cities for 3 days of nature therapy in the winter (30 subjects) and spring (30 subjects), including 20 hypertensive patients. Results The results showed that the overall blood pressure, pulse and sleep dysfunction rating scores of the participants were significantly lower than the pretest levels, and the finger blood oxygen saturation, mid-day salivary alpha-amylase and cortisol were increased post-treatment. Increases in these biomarker indicates and increase in stress. There were significant differences in the changes in systolic blood pressure between the hypertension group (HTN) and the normal group (normal) (HTN decreased by 8.8%, normal decreased by 5.4%), salivary alpha-amylase content (HTN decreased by 0.3%, normal increased by 16.9%), and sleep dysfunction rating scores (HTN decreased by 59.6%, normal decreased by 54%). The decreases in systolic blood pressure and pulse in the winter group were higher than those in the spring group by 1.8 and 4.4%, respectively, while the increases in salivary alpha-amylase content and salivary cortisol content were lower than those in the spring group by 11.7 and 11.2%, respectively, and the decrease in sleep dysfunction rating scores was lower than that in the spring group by 7.1%. Conclusion Our study concluded that nature therapy based on various health activities in the Linpan has significant health effects on older women. It can regulate blood pressure and pulse in older women, relieve cardiovascular disease, improve sleep quality. Meanwhile, older women with high blood pressure experienced a more significant effect than the healthy group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review will determine the prevalence of sleep disturbances in individuals with mild cognitive impairment. INTRODUCTION Mild cognitive impairment is regarded as a transitional state between normal functioning and dementia, and has a high likelihood of conversion to dementia. Individuals with mild cognitive impairment may suffer more severe sleep disturbances compared with normal older people. In some studies, sleep disturbances were associated with significantly higher odds of mild cognitive impairment. There is a need for prevalence estimates of sleep disturbances in people with mild cognitive impairment based on the currently available literature to guide clinical health care professionals and public health policies. INCLUSION CRITERIA The review will consider studies reporting on the prevalence of sleep disturbances in individuals with mild cognitive impairment, using validated instruments, including subjective and/or objective measures. Studies will be excluded if the participants report sleep-related breathing or movement disorders. Studies using only the Mini-Mental State Examination to diagnose mild cognitive impairment will also be excluded. METHODS The review will follow the JBI methodology for systematic reviews of prevalence and incidence. The MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase, Cochrane Library (CDSR and CENTRAL), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection databases will be systematically searched from inception to the present with no language limitations. Analytical observational studies, including prospective and retrospective cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies, will be considered. Two reviewers will independently conduct the study selection, critical appraisal, and data extraction. Methodological quality will be evaluated using the JBI critical appraisal checklist for studies reporting prevalence data. A meta-analysis will be conducted to synthesize the prevalence data, where possible. REVIEW REGISTRATION PROSPERO CRD42022366108.

Abstract
PURPOSE The relationships between sleep quality and sleep hygiene awareness in the Chinese population were unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations and related factors between sleep quality and sleep hygiene awareness in adults and to identify the most central domain for sleep quality using network analysis. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted from April 22 to May 5, 2020. Adults (18 years old or above) who had access to smartphones were invited to participate in this survey. The Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Sleep Hygiene Awareness and Practice Scale (SHAPS) were used to evaluate the sleep quality and sleep hygiene awareness of the participants. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used as sensitivity analysis to reduce the confounding effects. Multiple logistic regression was performed to evaluate the associations. The R packages "bootnet" and "qgraph" were used to estimate the connection and calculate the network centrality indices between good and poor sleepers. RESULTS In total, 939 respondents were included in the analysis. Of them, 48.8% (95% CI: 45.6-52.0%) were identified as poor sleepers. Participants with nervous system diseases, psychiatric diseases, and psychological problems were more likely to have poor sleep quality. The notion that using sleep medication regularly was beneficial to sleep was associated with poor sleep quality. Similarly, the notion that waking up at the same time each day disrupted sleep was also associated with poor sleep quality. The findings were consistent before and after PSM. Subjective sleep quality was the most central domain for sleep quality in good and poor sleepers. CONCLUSION Poor sleep quality was positively associated with certain sleep hygiene notions in Chinese adults. Effective measures such as self-relief, sleep hygiene education, and cognitive behavioral treatment may have been needed to improve sleep quality, especially during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract
Poor sleep quality is prevalent among members of the military but rates of poor sleep quality vary between studies. This study examined the global prevalence of poor sleep quality in military personnel and veterans as well as possible moderators of prevalence differences between studies. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were systematically searched from their inception dates to September 1, 2022. Studies were included if they were conducted on military personnel and/or veterans and prevalence estimates of poor sleep quality could be generated from assessments with standardized tools. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled prevalence and its 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Fifty-nine studies (N = 28,100) were included for analysis with sample sizes ranging from 14 to 8481. Two studies were rated as "high quality" (3.39%), while 57 were rated as "moderate quality" (96.61%). The overall pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality in military personnel and veterans was 69.00% (95% CI: 62.33-75.30%); pooled rates were 57.79% (95% CI: 49.88-65.50%) and 82.88% (95% CI: 74.08-90.21%) for active duty personnel and veterans, respectively. Subgroup analyses indicated study region, study design, sampling method, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index cut-off values, and service type moderated prevalence of poor sleep quality. Meta-regression analyses indicated sample size, mean age, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were associated with prevalence differences between studies. Poor sleep quality was more common in both active duty military personnel and veterans who were older and those who reported PTSD or depression. Regular monitoring of sleep quality and sleep hygiene should be promoted in this population. More relevant studies in middle- and low-income countries should also be conducted.

Abstract
Objective Night flights might aggravate sleep disorders among aging airline pilots, posing a threat to flight safety. In this study, we assess the prevalence of sleep disorders as well as the combined effects of night flight duration and aging on sleep disorders. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted between July and December, 2021. Participants were recruited from a commercial airline. Sleep disorders were evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The interaction effect of night flight duration and age on sleep disorders and their correlates were examined using logistic regression models. Results In total, 1,208 male airline pilots were included in the study, with a median age of 34 (interquartile range [IQR]: 29-39) years. The overall prevalence of sleep disorders was 42.6%. The multivariate logistic regression identified an interaction between night flight duration and age on sleep disorders (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] of the interaction term was 5.85 95% CI: 2.23-15.34 for age ≥ 45 years; 1.96 95% CI:1.01-3.81 for the age group 30-44 years). Longer night flight duration (aOR: 4.55; 95%CI: 1.82-11.38) and body mass index (BMI) ≥28.0 kg/m2 (aOR: 0.16; 95% CI: 0.03-0.91) were significantly associated with sleep disorders in participants aged ≥45 years. Hyperuricemia (aOR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.09-2.16) and regular exercise (aOR: 0.23; 95% CI: 0.08-0.70) were significantly associated with sleep disorders in the 30-44 years age group. Conclusion The mean monthly night flight duration and aging had a synergistic effect on airline pilots' sleep disorders, implying an aging and work-related mechanistic pathogenesis of sleep disorders in airline pilots that requires additional exploration and intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluated the preliminary effect of an integrated novel intervention comprising visualised sleep report feedback using information and communication technology and periodic health guidance on improving sleep indicators among community-dwelling older people. METHODS The intervention was implemented among 29 older people in Sakai City, Japan, in a 3 months pilot trial. Non-worn actigraph devices were placed under participants' bedding to continuously measure their sleep state, and they received monthly sleep reports in writing. Sleep efficiency, total sleep time, sleep latency, and the number of times away from bed were recorded. A trained nurse expertly interpreted participants' sleep data and provided telephone health guidance. The first month's data were used as the baseline (T1), the second month provided data for the first intervention (T2), and the third month provided data for the second intervention (T3). Friedman tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to examine differences in sleep outcomes between different time points. RESULTS Participants' mean age was 78.97 ± 5.15 years, and 51.72% (15/29) were female. Comparison of T2 and T1 showed the intervention decreased participants' sleep latency at T2 (P = 0.038). Compared with T1, the intervention significantly decreased sleep latency (P = 0.004), increased total sleep time (P < 0.001), and improved sleep efficiency (P < 0.001) at T3. When T3 was compared with T2, only total sleep time was significantly increased (P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the number of times away from bed across the three time points (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This visualised sleep report feedback and periodic health guidance intervention for community-dwelling older people showed promising, albeit small preliminary effects on sleep. A fully powered randomised controlled trial is required to verify the significance of this effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A handful of previous studies have reported the association between exposure to outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN) and sleep problems. However, evidence for such association is limited in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to examine the association between outdoor ALAN exposure and sleep quality in veterans across different regions of China. METHODS Within the network of the Chinese Veteran Clinical Research Platform, we selected 7258 participants from 277 veteran communities in 18 cities across China during December 2009 and December 2011, using a multi-stage stratified cluster sampling strategy. Face-to-face interviews with the participants were conducted by trained investigators. We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess participants' sleep quality. We defined poor sleep quality as a PSQI global score >7. The 3-year average exposure to outdoor ALAN prior to the baseline interview was calculated using satellite imagery data, according to participants' geolocation information. The association of ALAN exposure with sleep quality was examined using the mixed-effects logistic regression models with natural cubic splines. RESULTS The exposure-response curve for sleep quality associated with ALAN exposure was nonlinear, with a threshold value of 49.20 nW/cm2/sr for the 3-year average exposure to outdoor ALAN prior to the baseline interview. Higher ALAN exposure above the threshold was associated with increased risk of poor sleep quality. After adjusting for potential confounders, the odds ratios (and 95%CI, 95% confidence intervals) were 1.15 (0.97, 1.36) and 1.45 (1.17, 1.78) at the 75th and 95th percentiles of ALAN against the threshold. The association of ALAN exposure with poor sleep quality was more pronounced in veterans with depression than those without. Higher OR of poor sleep quality at the 75th percentile of ALAN against the threshold was observed in veterans with depression than those without [2.09 (1.16, 3.76) vs. 1.09 (0.92, 1.30)]. CONCLUSIONS Long-term exposure to outdoor ALAN was associated with higher risk of poor sleep quality in Chinese veterans. Effective outdoor ALAN management may help to reduce the burden of sleep disorders in Chinese veterans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxiety and sleep problems are common comorbidities among outpatients living in high-altitude areas. Network analysis is a novel method to investigate the interaction and the association between symptoms across diverse disorders. This study used network analysis to investigate the network structure symptoms of anxiety and sleep problems among outpatients in high-altitude areas, and to explore the differences in symptom associations in various sex, age, educational levels and employment groups. METHODS The data was collected from the Sleep Medicine Center of The First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province from November 2017 to January 2021 with consecutive recruitment (N = 11,194). Anxiety and sleep problems were measured by the Chinese version of the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) respectively. Central symptoms were identified based on centrality indices and bridge symptoms were identified with bridge indices. The difference of network structures in various sex, age, educational levels and employment groups were also explored. RESULTS Among all the cases, 6,534 (58.37%; 95% CI: 57.45-59.29%) reported experiencing anxiety (GAD-7 total scores ≥ 5), and 7,718 (68.94%; 95% CI: 68.08-69.80%) reported experiencing sleep problems (PSQI total scores ≥ 10). Based on the results of network analysis, among participants, "Nervousness", "Trouble relaxing", "Uncontrollable worry" were the most critical central symptoms and bridge symptoms within the anxiety and sleep problems network structure. The adjusted network model after controlling for covariates was significantly correlated with the original (r = 0.75, P = 0.46). Additionally, there were significant differences in edge weights in the comparisons between sex, age and educational levels groups (P < 0.001), while the employed and unemployed groups did not show significant differences in edge weights (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In the anxiety and sleep problems network model, among outpatients living in high-altitude areas, nervousness, uncontrollable worry, and trouble relaxing were the most central symptoms and bridge symptoms. Moreover, there were significant differences between various sex, age and educational levels. These findings can be used to provide clinical suggestions for psychological interventions and measures targeting to reduce symptoms that exacerbate mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbance is a common complaint among critically ill patients in intensive care units and after hospitalisation. However, the prevalence of sleep disturbance among critically ill patients varies widely. OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of sleep disturbance among critically ill patients in the intensive care unit and after hospitalisation. METHODS Electronic databases were searched from their inception until 15 August 2022. Only observational studies with cross-sectional, prospective, and retrospective designs investigating sleep disturbance prevalence among critically ill adults (aged ≥ 18 years) during intensive care unit stay and after hospitalisation were included. RESULTS We found 13 studies investigating sleep disturbance prevalence in intensive care units and 14 investigating sleep disturbance prevalence after hospitalisation, with 1,228 and 3,065 participants, respectively. The prevalence of sleep disturbance during an ICU stay was 66 %, and at two, three, six and ≥ 12 months after hospitalisation was 64 %, 49 %, 40 %, and 28 %, respectively. Studies using the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire detected a higher prevalence of sleep disturbance among patients in intensive care units than non-intensive care unit specific questionnaires; studies reported comparable sleep disturbance prevalence during intensive care stays for patients with and without mechanical ventilation. CONCLUSION Sleep disturbance is prevalent in critically ill patients admitted to an intensive care unit and persists for up to one year after hospitalisation, with prevalence ranging from 28 % to 66 %. The study results highlight the importance of implementing effective interventions as early as possible to improve intensive care unit sleep quality.

Abstract
A significant proportion of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) suffer from physical and mental disorders which lead to the decline of sleep profile. Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in these patients. But the effect of sleep on the outcomes of post-PCI patients remains unclear. We aim to examine the individual and joint effects of sleep quality and sleep duration on the risk of adverse cardiovascular events in post-PCI patients. We included 314 participants who were diagnosed with a first CAD and underwent PCI with drug-eluting stents and followed up for a mean duration of 341 days to assess major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). Sleep quality, based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, was categorized as good (a score of ≤7) or poor (>7). Sleep duration was categorized into three classes: ≤ 5, 6-8 (reference group) and ≥ 9 hours per day. The log-rank test and the Cox regression model were used for data analysis. MACEs occurred in 26 (8.3%) patients. Subjects whose sleep duration was ≤ 5 hours per day had a shorter time to MACEs than those whose sleep duration was 6-8 hours (p = 0.036). A significantly increased risk for MACEs was observed for participants with a ≤ 5 hours sleep duration (HR = 2.18, 95% CI = 1.02-4.64) after adjustment for demographic and clinical confounders. Associations between long sleep duration (≥ 9 hours), sleep quality, or their joint effect and MACEs were not found. This suggests the importance of considering sleep loss when developing strategies to improve health outcomes of PCI patients. And further researches are needed to examine the effects of different aspects of sleep quality on the prognosis of PCI patients and explore the reasons that lead to the decline of sleep profile.

Abstract
Background The migrant elderly following children (MEFC) are a vulnerable group that emerged during fast urbanization in China. The MEFC faced physical and psychological discomfort upon their arrival in the inflow city, particularly those who came from rural areas. Objective This study aimed to explore the relationship between oral health status, loneliness, and sleep quality among the MEFC in China and to clarify the disparities in the above mentioned relationship by migration type. Methods In 2021, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in Weifang, Shandong Province, using multistage cluster random sampling to collect data from the MEFC aged 60 years and over. In total, 613 respondents [525 rural-to-urban (RTU) and 88 urban-to-urban (UTU)] were included in the final database. The chi-square test, t-test, and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to investigate the relationship between oral health status, loneliness, and sleep quality among the RTU and UTU MEFC. Results Total scores [mean ± standard deviation (SD)] for oral health status, loneliness, and sleep quality were 54.95 ± 6.47, 8.58 ± 3.03, and 4.47 ± 3.60, respectively. SEM revealed that, among the RTU and UTU MEFC, oral health status was positively and significantly related to sleep quality; however, the correlation was slightly stronger in the UTU MEFC. In both groups, there was a significant negative correlation between oral health status and loneliness, which was stronger in the UTU MEFC. In the RTU MEFC, a significant negative correlation between loneliness and sleep quality was observed, and in the UTU MEFC, no significant association between loneliness and sleep quality was observed. Conclusion The sleep quality among the MEFC in this study was higher compared to previous studies. Oral health status was negatively correlated with loneliness and positively associated with sleep quality, whereas loneliness was negatively correlated with sleep quality. These three associations differed significantly between the UTU and RTU MEFC. The government, society, and families should take measures to improve oral health and reduce loneliness among the MEFC to improve their sleep quality.

Abstract
A complex urban living environment and residents' sleep quality are intrinsically linked. Nonetheless, there is little evidence that the residential environment affects sleep quality. Based on the results of subjective questionnaires, this study uses the multiple regression combined with mediation analysis to construct a mechanical model of the impact of urban residential environmental perception characteristics on residents' sleep quality. Moreover, the differences among the influence intensities of the significant factors are compared and the results show that (1) in low-density environments (FAR < 2) and lower floors (4-6), residents sleep longer and have better sleep quality; (2) the environmental quality and service facilities of the physical environment and the sense of safety in the social environment have a significant impact on residents' sleep quality; and (3) the mental health of residents play a significant intermediary role in the relationship between social environment and sleep quality, with the highest effect accounting for 33.88%. The influence mechanisms of various environmental factors in a residential area on sleep quality were revealed and a more refined design basis for a healthy urban living environment, community renewal, and renovation was provided.

Abstract
Limited information is available on the links between heavy metals' exposure and coronary heart disease (CHD). We aim to establish an efficient and explainable machine learning (ML) model that associates heavy metals' exposure with CHD identification. Our datasets for investigating the associations between heavy metals and CHD were sourced from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (US NHANES, 2003-2018). Five ML models were established to identify CHD by heavy metals' exposure. Further, 11 discrimination characteristics were used to test the strength of the models. The optimally performing model was selected for identification. Finally, the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) tool was used for interpreting the features to visualize the selected model's decision-making capacity. In total, 12,554 participants were eligible for this study. The best performing random forest classifier (RF) based on 13 heavy metals to identify CHD was chosen (AUC: 0.827; 95%CI: 0.777-0.877; accuracy: 95.9%). SHAP values indicated that cesium (1.62), thallium (1.17), antimony (1.63), dimethylarsonic acid (0.91), barium (0.76), arsenous acid (0.79), total arsenic (0.01) in urine, and lead (3.58) and cadmium (4.66) in blood positively contributed to the model, while cobalt (-0.15), cadmium (-2.93), and uranium (-0.13) in urine negatively contributed to the model. The RF model was efficient, accurate, and robust in identifying an association between heavy metals' exposure and CHD among US NHANES 2003-2018 participants. Cesium, thallium, antimony, dimethylarsonic acid, barium, arsenous acid, and total arsenic in urine, and lead and cadmium in blood show positive relationships with CHD, while cobalt, cadmium, and uranium in urine show negative relationships with CHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems are common among older adults worldwide. The present study aims to determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and its independent factors among retired people in health check-ups population in China. METHOD In this multicenter, cross-sectional survey in 2017, a group of retired people was invited to participate in an online survey of health status, and their data, including socio-demographic information, lifestyle, and medical characteristics, were recorded. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the independent factors responsible for poor sleep quality. RESULTS Data from 17,408 responders who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed; among them, 53.04 % (95 % CI = 52 %-54 %) reported poor sleep quality. Binary logistic regression showed that poor sleep quality was associated with a number of factors, including being female (OR = 1.42, 95 % CI = 1.32-1.53), being single (OR = 1.35, 95 % CI = 1.18-1.54), non-smoker (OR = 1.12, 95 % CI = 1.03-1.22), physical inactivity (OR = 1.14, 95 % CI = 1.05-1.23), poor self-rated health status (OR = 1.69, 95 % CI = 1.43-2.00), long-term medication use (OR = 1.05, 95 % CI = 1.07-1.23), chronic pain (OR = 1.33, 95 % CI = 1.22-1.45), comorbidity (OR = 1.16, 95 % CI = 1.07-1.25), and depressive symptoms (mild depression: OR = 2.14, 95 % CI = 1.96-2.34; moderate depression: OR = 4.00, 95 % CI = 3.49-4.58, moderately severe depression: OR = 4.15, 95 % CI = 3.47-4.97, severe depression: OR = 4.27, 95 % CI = 2.93-6.22); while age (OR = 0.99, 95 % CI = 0.99-1.00) was negatively related to poor sleep quality. CONCLUSION The prevalence of poor sleep quality in the studied population is relatively high (53.04 %). Sleep problems are common among Chinese retirees, especially older females, and have a great impact on their quality of life. People living with depression, chronic diseases, and chronic pain were at a higher risk of developing sleep disorders. Therefore, it is critical to formulate effective management strategies for Chinese retirees with poor sleep quality in the context of healthy aging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study assessed the effects of Health Qigong on sleep quality in adults. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHOD We searched 10 databases to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in English or Chinese languages that evaluated the effects of Health Qigong on sleep quality in participants aged ≥18 years old with or without diseases in comparison with any type of controls. Quality of the included studies was assessed by the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials. The between-group treatment effect size was estimated by calculating Hedges' g and associated confidence interval (CI) through a random effects model. Cochran's Q test and I2 were used to determine heterogeneity. RESULTS The initial search yielded 730 articles, of which 13 studies involving 1147 participants were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall effect size was -0.955 (95 % CI: -1.601 to -0.309, p = 0.004). A homogeneity test revealed high heterogeneity (Q = 278.187, p < 0.001, I2 = 95.686 %). A sensitivity analysis was conducted through the exclusion of an outlier, which revealed a small but statistically significant effect size (Hedges' g = -0.423, 95 % CI: -0.603 to -0.243, p < 0.001; Q = 18.073, p = 0.08, I2 = 39.137 %). CONCLUSIONS Our study results suggest that Health Qigong is beneficial for improving sleep quality in adults with and without disease. However, the effects of Health Qigong could be partially due to nonspecific effects as half of the included studies did not employ an active control.

Abstract
Sleep is an integral part of individuals' health and wellbeing. Despite evidence showing that social stressors are important contributors to older adults' sleep problems, how the accumulative stressful life events (SLEs) and ageing attitudes independently and jointly affect sleep quality among older adults in developing countries remains unclear. This study examined the effects of SLEs on subjectively rated sleep quality among older adults in China, and explored the potential mediating and moderating roles of positive and negative ageing attitudes on the above association. Using data from the 2014 China Longitudinal Ageing Social Survey, we had complete data for 7,780 older adults aged 60 and older. We employed logistic regression models and the Karlson–Holm–Breen decomposition method. Our findings indicated that SLEs significantly increased the risk of poor sleep quality, especially for those who had experienced two or more SLEs during the past year. Positive ageing attitudes were associated with lower odds of poor sleep quality, whereas negative ageing attitudes were related to higher odds of poor sleep quality. Moreover, the mediation analyses suggested that SLEs were associated with poor sleep quality via negative ageing attitudes. The moderating effects further documented that higher levels of positive ageing attitudes can significantly attenuate the deleterious impact of SLEs on sleep quality. The findings highlight the significance of SLEs for older adults' sleep quality and shed light on the importance of ageing attitudes to improve older adults' sleep in China as well as other low- and middle-income countries, where the social safety nets are still underdeveloped.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the enormous changes observed in China since entering the 21st century, little is known about changes in sleep quality among older adults. AIMS The purpose of this study is to explore the changes, features, and influence factors of sleep quality among the elderly in a ten-year period, providing evidence for sleep-quality enhancement. METHODS The data were obtained from the data of epidemiological sampling surveys on mental disorders in Shandong province in 2004 and 2015. A total of 4451 subjects (aged ≥ 60 years) in 2004 and 10,894 subjects (aged ≥ 60 years) in 2015 were selected by the multistage stratified sampling method. The demographic information and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were collected. RESULTS The adjusted 1-month prevalence of poor sleep in 2015 was 22.5% (95% CI:21.7-23.3), which is lower than that in 2004 (24.8%) (95% CI:23.5-26.0, p = 0.002). The total score of the PSQI in 2015 (4.74 ± 3.96) was lower than that in 2004 (4.97 ± 4.18, p = 0.002). In 2015, a binary multi-factor logistic and stepwise regression analysis showed that being female, living in a rural area, living alone, being older, spending less years in school, and being jobless/unemployed made the participants more likely to develop poor sleep (p < 0.05, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS In 2015, the overall sleep quality of the elderly (aged ≥ 60) in Shandong province was significantly improved compared to 2004. After more than 10 years, the characteristics of the elderly with sleep disturbances in Shandong province has changed. Therefore, more attention should be paid to gender, location of residence (rural or urban), living arrangement, age, education, occupation, and other factors to improve the sleep quality of the elderly.

Abstract
Background and objectives Integrating sleep health into primary care is a promising approach to narrow the treatment gap for insomnia in older adults but data regarding the epidemiological characteristics of insomnia among elderly primary care attenders (EPCAs) are very limited. This study examined the prevalence and correlates of clinical insomnia among Chinese EPCAs. Methods By using two-stage consecutive sampling method, a total of 757 EPCAs were recruited from seven urban and six rural primary care centers in Wuhan, China. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (15 item version) were administered to assess insomnia severity and depressive symptoms, respectively. Results The two-week prevalence of clinical insomnia (ISI score ≥ 15) was 28.9%. Significant correlates of clinical insomnia were: female sex (vs. male, OR = 2.13, P < 0.001), fair and poor family relationship (vs. good, OR = 1.59, P = 0.028), hypertension (OR = 1.67, P = 0.004), heart disease (OR = 1.73, P = 0.048), arthritis (OR = 2.72, P = 0.001), and depressive symptoms (OR = 4.53, P < 0.001). Conclusion The high prevalence of clinical insomnia among Chinese EPCAs suggests a high level of sleep health need in older patients in China's primary care settings. Considering the many negative outcomes associated with insomnia, it is necessary to integrate sleep health into primary care in China.

Abstract
Aging as a major challenge can affect the development and growth of countries all around the world. This study aimed to identify the subgroups of the elderly based on the quality of life (Qol), sleep quality, and common mental disorders and assess the role of demographic characteristics on the membership of participants in each latent class. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 1064 people over the age of 60 years. The sample was selected through cluster sampling in northern Iran. All participants completed six sets of checklists and questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using latent class analysis. Three latent classes were identified; namely, (1) healthy (66.8%), (2) anxious and with poor sleep quality (28.6%), and unhealthy (4.6%). Being Female significantly increased the odds of membership in classes 2 and 3 compared to class 1. Furthermore, living in urban areas increased the odds of belonging to class 2 and class 3 compared to class 1. Illiteracy was also shown to increase the odds of being in class 3 in comparison to class 1. Results from the present indicate that the co-occurrence of health problems in 33.2% of the elderly was observed in various forms. The results of this study can be used in prioritizing health programs for the elderly and emphasizing high-risk groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore changes and predictors of sleep quality with a 2-year follow-up in Chinese elderly individuals and to further present them according to living arrangements. METHODS A total of 3005 individuals were effectively surveyed at baseline and at the 2-year follow-up. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) was performed to explore associations between sleep quality and predictor variables. RESULTS The rate of poor sleep quality was 32.6% at baseline and 27.4% at follow-up. According to living arrangements, sleep quality improved among empty nesters living as a couple (P < 0.001). After adjusting for sex, age, and other influencing factors, empty nesters living alone had poorer sleep quality (OR = 1.399, 95% CI = 1.022-1.917) than nonempty nesters. Sex, age, education, self-reported health, depression, and social support were predictors of poor sleep quality for all participants. In the subgroup analyses, self-reported physical health and body mass index (BMI) were predictors of sleep quality in the nonempty-nester group, but depression was not a predictor. Depression was a predictor of sleep quality in the empty-nester group. CONCLUSIONS Sleep quality was improved in this 2-year follow-up survey. However, sleep quality problems in the elderly cannot be ignored, especially empty nesters living alone. Therefore, according to living arrangements, different intervention methods should be selected to prevent and control poor sleep quality.
