Effects of confinement on freezing and melting

Self-Assembly of Ionic Superdiscs in Nanopores

Discotic ionic liquid crystals (DILCs) consist of self-assembled superdiscs of cations and anions that spontaneously stack in linear columns with high one-dimensional ionic and electronic charge mobility, making them prominent model systems for functional soft matter. Compared to classical nonionic discotic liquid crystals, many liquid crystalline structures with a combination of electronic and ionic conductivity have been reported, which are of interest for separation membranes, artificial ion/proton conducting membranes, and optoelectronics. Unfortunately, a homogeneous alignment of the DILCs on the macroscale is often not achievable, which significantly limits the applicability of DILCs. Infiltration into nanoporous solid scaffolds can, in principle, overcome this drawback. However, due to the experimental challenges to scrutinize liquid crystalline order in extreme spatial confinement, little is known about the structures of DILCs in nanopores. Here, we present temperature-dependent high-resolution optical birefringence measurement and 3D reciprocal space mapping based on synchrotron X-ray scattering to investigate the thermotropic phase behavior of dopamine-based ionic liquid crystals confined in cylindrical channels of 180 nm diameter in macroscopic anodic aluminum oxide membranes. As a function of the membranes' hydrophilicity and thus the molecular anchoring to the pore walls (edge-on or face-on) and the variation of the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance between the aromatic cores and the alkyl side chain motifs of the superdiscs by tailored chemical synthesis, we find a particularly rich phase behavior, which is not present in the bulk state. It is governed by a complex interplay of liquid crystalline elastic energies (bending and splay deformations), polar interactions, and pure geometric confinement and includes textural transitions between radial and axial alignment of the columns with respect to the long nanochannel axis. Furthermore, confinement-induced continuous order formation is observed in contrast to discontinuous first-order phase transitions, which can be quantitatively described by Landau-de Gennes free energy models for liquid crystalline order transitions in confinement. Our observations suggest that the infiltration of DILCs into nanoporous solids allows tailoring their nanoscale texture and ion channel formation and thus their electrical and optical functionalities over an even wider range than in the bulk state in a homogeneous manner on the centimeter scale as controlled by the monolithic nanoporous scaffolds.

Structures and Dynamics of Complex Guest Molecules in Confinement, Revealed by Solid-State NMR, Molecular Dynamics, and Calorimetry

This review gives an overview of current trends in the investigation of confined molecules such as water, small and higher alcohols, carbonic acids, ethylene glycol, and non-ionic surfactants, such as polyethylene glycol or Triton-X, as guest molecules in neat and functionalized mesoporous silica materials employing solid-state NMR spectroscopy, supported by calorimetry and molecular dynamics simulations. The combination of steric interactions, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions results in a fascinating phase behavior in the confinement. Combining solid-state NMR and relaxometry, DNP hyperpolarization, molecular dynamics simulations, and general physicochemical techniques, it is possible to monitor these confined molecules and gain deep insights into this phase behavior and the underlying molecular arrangements. In many cases, the competition between hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between polar and non-polar moieties of the guests and the host leads to the formation of ordered structures, despite the cramped surroundings inside the pores.

Pore-scale physics of ice melting within unconsolidated porous media revealed by non-destructive magnetic resonance characterization

Melting of ice in porous media widely exists in energy and environment applications as well as extraterrestrial water resource utilization. In order to characterize the ice-water phase transition within complicated opaque porous media, we employ the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and imaging (MRI) approaches. Transient distributions of transverse relaxation time T2 from NMR enable us to reveal the substantial role of inherent throat and pore confinements in ice melting among porous media. More importantly, the increase in minimum T2 provides new findings on how the confinement between ice crystal and particle surface evolves inside the pore. For porous media with negligible gravity effect, both the changes in NMR-determined melting rate and our theoretical analysis of melting front confirm that conduction is the dominant heat transfer mode. The evolution of mushy melting front and 3D spatial distribution of water content are directly visualized by a stack of temporal cross-section images from MRI, in consistency with the corresponding NMR results. For heterogeneous porous media like lunar regolith simulant, the T2 distribution shows two distinct pore size distributions with different pore-scale melting dynamics, and its maximum T2 keeps increasing till the end of melting process instead of reaching steady in homogeneous porous media.

Ice-Water Equilibrium in Nanoscale Confinement

We show that 2D ^{2}H NMR spectra enable valuable insights into the nature of an ice-water equilibrium in nanoscale confinement, which extends over a broad temperature range. In particular, 2D ^{2}H NMR line-shape analysis allows us to determine the timescale on which the coexisting ice and water phases exchange molecules. For D_{2}O in a silica nanopore with a diameter of 5.4 nm, we find that the residence time of a water molecule in either phase is characterized by an NMR exchange time of τ_{X}=5.7  ms at 220 K. Thus, the ice-water equilibrium is highly dynamic, which is an important aspect for an understanding of deeply cooled confined and, possibly, bulk waters.

The Nanoscale Wetting Parameter and Its Role in Interfacial Phenomena: Phase Transitions in Nanopores

Through analysis of the statistical mechanical equations for a thin adsorbed film (gas, liquid, or solid) on a solid substrate or confined within a pore, it is possible to express the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of the film as a function of just two dimensionless parameters: a nanoscale wetting parameter, αw, and pore width, H*. The wetting parameter, αw, is defined in terms of molecular parameters for the adsorbed film and substrate and so is applicable at the nanoscale and for films of any phase. The main assumptions in the treatment are that (a) the substrate structure is not significantly affected by the adsorbed layer and (b) the diameter of the adsorbate molecules is not very small compared to the spacing of atoms in the solid substrate. We show that different surface geometries of the substrate (e.g., slit, cylindrical, and spherical pores) and various models of wall heterogeneity can be accounted for through a well-defined correction to the wetting parameter; no new dimensionless variables are introduced. Experimental measurements are reported for contact angles for various liquids on several planar substrates and are shown to be closely correlated with the nanoscale wetting parameter. We apply this approach to phase separation in nanopores of various geometries. Molecular simulation results for the phase diagram in confinement, obtained by the flat histogram Monte Carlo method, are reported and are shown to be closely similar to experimental results for capillary condensation, melting, and the triple point. The value of the wetting parameter, αw, is shown to determine the qualitative behavior (e.g., increase vs decrease in the melting temperature, capillary condensation vs evaporation), whereas the pore width determines the magnitude of the confinement effect. The triple point temperature and pressure for the confined phase are always lower than those for the bulk phase for all cases studied.

Investigating the Cell Entry Mechanism, Disassembly, and Toxicity of the Nanocage PCC-1: Insights into Its Potential as a Drug Delivery Vehicle

The porous coordination cage PCC-1 represents a new platform potentially useful for the cellular delivery of drugs with poor cell permeability and solubility. PCC-1 is a metal-organic polyhedron constructed from zinc metal ions and organic ligands through coordination bonds. PCC-1 possesses an internal cavity that is suitable for drug encapsulation. To better understand the biocompatibility of PCC-1 with human cells, the cell entry mechanism, disassembly, and toxicity of the nanocage were investigated. PCC-1 localizes in the nuclei and cytoplasm within minutes upon incubation with cells, independent of endocytosis and cargo, suggesting direct plasma membrane translocation of the nanocage carrying its guest in its internal cavity. Furthermore, the rates of cell entry correlate to extracellular concentrations, indicating that PCC-1 is likely diffusing passively through the membrane despite its relatively large size. Once inside cells, PCC-1 disintegrates into zinc metal ions and ligands over a period of several hours, each component being cleared from cells within 1 day. PCC-1 is relatively safe for cells at low micromolar concentrations but becomes inhibitory to cell proliferation and toxic above a concentration or incubation time threshold. However, cells surviving these conditions can return to homeostasis 3-5 days after exposure. Overall, these findings demonstrate that PCC-1 enters live cells by crossing biological membranes spontaneously. This should prove useful to deliver drugs that lack this capacity on their own, provided that the dosage and exposure time are controlled to avoid toxicity.

Hydrogen-bonded structures and low temperature transitions of the confined water in subnano channels

The interfacial and confined water have long been attractive objects due to their crucial roles in biological, geological processes, etc. In this paper, we investigate the hydrogen-bonded structures of water and their low temperature transitions in the subnano channels of AlPO4-11 for the first time on the basis of infrared spectroscopy. The number of the adsorbed water molecules is estimated to be 8.45 per channel in one unit cell by thermogravimetric analysis. It is found that the confined water molecules are involved in saturated and unsaturated coordination with different hydrogen bond strengths at ambient temperature. The former refers to ice-like four-coordinated water and the latter includes liquid-like structures, Al-coordinated and relatively free water molecules. Unique coordination between water molecules and framework Al sites is responsible for the ice-like structures in the channels above the ice melting point. The appearance of liquid-like structures is closely related to the strong channel confinement, which does not allow the formation of extensive tetrahedral hydrogen-bonded configuration. As temperature decreases, a structural transformation of confined water happens in the channels of AlPO4-11. Isolated small water oligomers and two new components with stronger hydrogen bonds, such as low-density amorphous ice-like structures and a kind of low-density liquid-like structures are preferred. Our results provide important insights into the structural organizations and thermal-dynamic behaviors of confined water in extreme narrow channels.

Experimental Study on Phase Transitions of Carbon Dioxide Confined in Nanopores: Evaporation, Melting, Sublimation, and Triple Point

Capillary phase transitions (evaporation, melting, and sublimation) and the pore triple point of CO2 confined in MCM-41 mesoporous media with a pore diameter of 3.5 nm have been studied by using an isochoric heating procedure in a high-pressure low-temperature differential scanning calorimeter over a pressure range of 0.5-40.5 bar. The procedure is validated by the agreement between the measured conditions of bulk evaporation/sublimation and literature data. The main finding in this work is that the solid-to-fluid phase transitions of CO2 in MCM-41 shift to temperatures higher than those of the corresponding bulk phase transitions. It is also found that the formation of a solid phase of CO2 in MCM-41 does not require the presence of a liquid or solid in the bulk. The capillary-melting and capillary-evaporation curves approach each other as temperature decreases until they meet at the pore triple point. The effect of pressure on capillary melting temperature is significant at pressures close to the pore triple point. Furthermore, the capillary-melting curve approaches the bulk saturated vapor-pressure curve as temperature increases, thus hinting an agreement with the prediction by molecular dynamics simulation in the literature that the curves eventually intersect each other at a high temperature and pressure. Based on the measured capillary phase transitions, the pore triple-point temperature and pressure of nanoconfined CO2 are bracketed and found to be much lower than those of the bulk triple point.

Nanoconfined Water in Pillared Zeolites Probed by 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Here, we report the results of our 1H nuclear magnetic resonance study of the dynamics of water molecules confined in zeolites (mordenite and ZSM-5 structures) with hierarchical porosity (micropores in zeolite lamella and mesopores formed by amorphous SiO2 in the inter-lamellar space). 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra show that water experiences complex behavior within the temperature range from 173 to 298 K. The temperature dependence of 1H spin-lattice relaxation evidences the presence of three processes with different activation energies: freezing (about 30 kJ/mol), fast rotation (about 10 kJ/mol), and translational motion of water molecules (23.6 and 26.0 kJ/mol for pillared mordenite and ZSM-5, respectively). For translational motion, the activation energy is markedly lower than for water in mesoporous silica or zeolites with similar mesopore size but with disordered secondary porosity. This indicates that the process of water diffusion in zeolites with hierarchical porosity is governed not only by the presence of mesopores, but also by the mutual arrangement of meso- and micropores. The translational motion of water molecules is determined mainly by zeolite micropores.

Molecular simulation of the confined crystallization of ice in cement nanopore

Freezing of water under nanoconfinement exhibits physical peculiarities with respect to the bulk water. However, experimental observations are extremely challenging at this scale, which limits our understanding of the effect of confinement on water properties upon freezing. In this study, we use molecular dynamic simulations to investigate how confinement affects the kinetics of growth of ice and the thermodynamic equilibrium of ice-liquid coexistence. TIP4P/Ice water model and CSH-FF model were applied to simulate ice crystallization in a confined cement system at temperatures down to 220 K. We adapted an interface detection algorithm and reparameterized the CHILL/CHILL+ algorithm to capture ice growth. The confinement leads to a shift of the maximum growth rate of ice to a higher temperature than for bulk water. Both the confinement and surface impurities contribute to slowing down the ice growth. For the ice-liquid coexistence at equilibrium, we derive a formulation of Thomson's equation adapted to statistical physics quantities accessible by molecular simulation, and we show that this adapted equation predicts accurately the melting line of bulk and confined ice Ih as a function of pressure. The confinement decreases systematically the melting temperature of ice of about 5 K compared with bulk ice Ih. A premelted water film about 1 nm thick is observed between the solid wall and ice, and its thickness is found to decrease continuously as temperature is lowered. We note that the surface impurities are key to the formation of the premelted water nanofilm when the temperature is lower than 250 K.

Phase transitions of ionic fluids in nanoporous electrodes

In this work, we utilise grand canonical Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, to establish pore-induced freezing of restricted primitive model fluids. A planar pore model is utilised, with walls that are initially neutral, and either non-conducting or perfectly conducting. The phase of the confined electrolyte (solid/fluid) displays an oscillatory dependence on surface separation, in narrow pores. Conditions are chosen so that the bulk is composed of a stable fluid electrolyte. The tendency for the electrolyte to freeze in narrow pores is somewhat stronger in systems with non-conducting walls. We also demonstrate that an applied potential will, above a threshold value, melt a frozen electrolyte. In these cases, the capacitance, as measured by the average surface charge density divided by the applied potential, will be almost vanishing if the applied potential is below this threshold value. We do not see any evidence for a "superionic fluid", which has been hypothesised to generate a strong capacitance in narrow pores, due to an efficient screening of like-charge repulsions by image charges.

Role of site-site interaction on the phase equilibria of multiple-site associating fluids in a functionalized slit pore

Vapor-liquid phase equilibria for multiple sites associating fluids with different associating strengths are investigated in a slit pore using grand-canonical transition matrix Monte Carlo method. The increase of critical temperature from two-site to four-site associating fluids at constant site strength is quite significant as compared to that of the one-site to two-site associating fluids, which is more pronounced at higher associating strength (ϵ* = 6). Monomer fraction and cluster size distribution are used to investigate the association of fluid particles in coexistence phases. The monomer fraction for both phases decreases with increased associating sites on the fluid particles due to more site-site interaction with neighboring fluid particles and forming a larger cluster. Therefore, the number of associating sites and their distribution play a vital role in the association of fluid particles. Moreover, the saturation chemical potential changes with the arrangement of the sites. For two-site associating fluids, we observe early vapor-liquid transition when the sites are oppositely placed, and when the sites are placed at 90°, the vapor-liquid transition is observed at the higher chemical potential. Moreover, four-site associating fluids with a square arrangement show early vapor-liquid phase transition, mainly because these arrangements of sites effectively interact with surface sites and the molecules in the next layer.

Preparation and Characterization of Silica-Based Ionogel Electrolytes and Their Application in Solid-State Lithium Batteries

In this study, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) were used as precursors for silica, combined with the ionic liquid [BMIM-ClO4]. Lithium perchlorate was added as the lithium-ion source, and formic acid was employed as a catalyst to synthesize silica ionogel electrolytes via the sol-gel method. FT-IR and NMR identified the self-prepared ionic liquid [BMIM-ClO4], and its electrochemical window was determined using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The properties of the prepared silica ionogel electrolytes were further investigated through FT-IR, DSC, and 29Si MAS NMR measurements, followed by electrochemical property measurements, including conductivity, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), LSV, and charge-discharge tests. The experimental results showed that adding methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) enhanced the mechanical strength of the silica ionogel electrolyte, simplifying its preparation process. The prepared silica ionogel electrolyte exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 1.65 × 10-3 S/cm. In the LSV test, the silica ionogel electrolyte demonstrated high electrochemical stability, withstanding over 5 V without oxidative decomposition. Finally, during the discharge-charge test, the second-cycle capacity reached 108.7 mAh/g at a discharge-charge rate of 0.2 C and a temperature of 55 °C.

Thermodynamic Study of the Electric Field Effect on Liquid-Vapor Mixture at Equilibrium: An Analysis on a Water-Ethanol Mixture

In this paper, the effect of electric fields on phase equilibria through polarization is investigated. A relation is derived for the chemical potential of a system, where the electric field is localized over a liquid phase mixture in equilibrium with a vapor phase mixture. This relation is then applied to a water-ethanol mixture to explore the effect of polarization-based electric fields on the liquid phase composition. It is observed that the quadratic dependence on electric field strength produces little effect below field strengths of approx. 10 MV/m. However, above this field strength, the mole fraction of water in the liquid phase grows rapidly, increasing by a factor of 8 for a water vapor phase fraction of 0.2 and a field strength of 500 MV/m, which approaches the dielectric breakdown strength of water. Nonetheless, this field strength could be achievable with microfluidic experimental setups.

Computer simulations and mode-coupling theory of glass-forming confined hard-sphere fluids

We present mode-coupling theory (MCT) results for densely packed hard-sphere fluids confined between two parallel walls and compare them quantitatively to computer simulations. The numerical solution of MCT is calculated using the full system of matrix-valued integro-differential equations. We investigate several dynamical properties of supercooled liquids including scattering functions, frequency-dependent susceptibilities, and mean-square displacements. Close to the glass transition, we find quantitative agreement between the coherent scattering function predicted from theory and that evaluated from simulations, which enables us to make quantitative statements on caging and relaxation dynamics of the confined hard-sphere fluid.

Fluids and Electrolytes under Confinement in Single-Digit Nanopores

Confined fluids and electrolyte solutions in nanopores exhibit rich and surprising physics and chemistry that impact the mass transport and energy efficiency in many important natural systems and industrial applications. Existing theories often fail to predict the exotic effects observed in the narrowest of such pores, called single-digit nanopores (SDNs), which have diameters or conduit widths of less than 10 nm, and have only recently become accessible for experimental measurements. What SDNs reveal has been surprising, including a rapidly increasing number of examples such as extraordinarily fast water transport, distorted fluid-phase boundaries, strong ion-correlation and quantum effects, and dielectric anomalies that are not observed in larger pores. Exploiting these effects presents myriad opportunities in both basic and applied research that stand to impact a host of new technologies at the water-energy nexus, from new membranes for precise separations and water purification to new gas permeable materials for water electrolyzers and energy-storage devices. SDNs also present unique opportunities to achieve ultrasensitive and selective chemical sensing at the single-ion and single-molecule limit. In this review article, we summarize the progress on nanofluidics of SDNs, with a focus on the confinement effects that arise in these extremely narrow nanopores. The recent development of precision model systems, transformative experimental tools, and multiscale theories that have played enabling roles in advancing this frontier are reviewed. We also identify new knowledge gaps in our understanding of nanofluidic transport and provide an outlook for the future challenges and opportunities at this rapidly advancing frontier.

Active Brownian particles in random and porous environments

The transport of active particles may occur in complex environments, in which it emerges from the interplay between the mobility of the active components and the quenched disorder of the environment. Here, we explore the structural and dynamical properties of active Brownian particles (ABPs) in random environments composed of fixed obstacles in three dimensions. We consider different arrangements of the obstacles. In particular, we consider two particular situations corresponding to experimentally realizable settings. First, we model pinning particles in (non-overlapping) random positions and, second, in a percolating gel structure and provide an extensive characterization of the structure and dynamics of ABPs in these complex environments. We find that the confinement increases the heterogeneity of the dynamics, with new populations of absorbed and localized particles appearing close to the obstacles. This heterogeneity has a profound impact on the motility induced phase separation exhibited by the particles at high activity, ranging from nucleation and growth in random disorder to a complex phase separation in porous environments.

Steering self-organisation through confinement

Self-organisation is the spontaneous emergence of spatio-temporal structures and patterns from the interaction of smaller individual units. Examples are found across many scales in very different systems and scientific disciplines, from physics, materials science and robotics to biology, geophysics and astronomy. Recent research has highlighted how self-organisation can be both mediated and controlled by confinement. Confinement is an action over a system that limits its units' translational and rotational degrees of freedom, thus also influencing the system's phase space probability density; it can function as either a catalyst or inhibitor of self-organisation. Confinement can then become a means to actively steer the emergence or suppression of collective phenomena in space and time. Here, to provide a common framework and perspective for future research, we examine the role of confinement in the self-organisation of soft-matter systems and identify overarching scientific challenges that need to be addressed to harness its full scientific and technological potential in soft matter and related fields. By drawing analogies with other disciplines, this framework will accelerate a common deeper understanding of self-organisation and trigger the development of innovative strategies to steer it using confinement, with impact on, e.g., the design of smarter materials, tissue engineering for biomedicine and in guiding active matter.

Hierarchical Macro-Mesoporous Silica Monolithic Tablets as a Novel Dose-Structure-Dependent Delivery System for the Release of Confined Dexketoprofen

This study reports the application of hierarchical porous monoliths as carriers for controlled and dose-adjustable release of model pharmaceutical (dexketoprofen, DEX). The synthesis and detailed characterization of the hierarchical porous scaffolds are provided before and after the adsorption of three doses of DEX─a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The drug incorporated in the mesopores of silica was stabilized in an amorphous state, while the presence of macropores provided sufficient space for drug crystallization as we demonstrated via a combination of powder X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and imaging techniques (scanning electron microscopy and EDX analysis). Drug release from silica matrices was tested, and a mechanistic model of this release based on the Fick diffusion equation was proposed. The hierarchical structure of the carrier, due to the presence of micrometric macropores and nanometric mesopores, turned out to be critical for the control of the drug phase and drug release from the monoliths. It was found that at low drug content, the presence of an amorphous component in the pores promoted the rapid release of the drug, while at higher drug contents, the presence of macropores favored the crystallization of DEX, which naturally slowed down its release. Both the hierarchical porous structure and the control of the drug phase (amorphous and/or crystalline) were proven important for adjustable (fast or prolonged) release kinetics, desirable for effective pharmacotherapy and patient compliance. Therefore, the developed materials may serve as a versatile formulation platform for the smart manipulation of drug release kinetics.

Effects of compressibility and wetting on the liquid-vapor transition in a confined fluid

When a fluid is constrained to a fixed, finite volume, the conditions for liquid-vapor equilibrium are different from those for the infinite volume or constant pressure cases. There is even a range of densities for which no bubble can form, and the liquid at a pressure below the bulk saturated vapor pressure remains indefinitely stable. As the fluid density in mineral inclusions is often derived from the temperature of bubble disappearance, a correction for the finite volume effect is required. Previous works have explained these phenomena and proposed a numerical procedure to compute the correction for pure water in a container completely wet by the liquid phase. Here, we revisit these works and provide an analytic formulation valid for any fluid, including the case of partial wetting. We introduce the Berthelot-Laplace length λ = 2γκ/3, which combines the liquid isothermal compressibility κ and its surface tension γ. The quantitative effects are fully captured by a single, nondimensional parameter: the ratio of λ to the container size.

Structural properties of liquids in extreme confinement

We simulate a hard-sphere liquid in confined geometry where the separation of the two parallel, hard walls is smaller than two particle diameters. By systematically reducing the wall separation we analyze the behavior of structural and thermodynamic properties, such as inhomogeneous density profiles, structure factors, and compressibilities when approaching the two-dimensional limit. In agreement with asymptotic predictions, we find for quasi-two-dimensional fluids that the density profile becomes parabolic and the structure factor converges toward its two-dimensional counterpart. To extract the compressibility in polydisperse samples a perturbative expression is used which qualitatively influences the observed nonmonotonic dependence of the compressibility with wall separation. We also present theoretical calculations based on fundamental-measure theory and integral-equation theory, which are in very good agreement with the simulation results.

Salt Enrichment and Dynamics in the Interface of Supercooled Aqueous Droplets

The interconversion reaction of NaCl between the contact-ion pair (CIP) and the solvent-separated ion pair (SSIP) as well as the free-ion state in cold droplets has not yet been investigated. We report direct computational evidence that the lower is the temperature, the closer to the surface the ion interconversion reaction takes place. In supercooled droplets the enrichment of the subsurface in salt becomes more evident. The stability of the SSIP relative to the CIP increases as the ion-pairing is transferred toward the droplet's outer layers. In the free-ion state, where the ions diffuse independently in the solution, the number density of Cl^- shows a broad maximum in the interior in addition to the well-known maximum in the surface. In the study of the reaction dynamics, we find a weak coupling between the interionic NaCl distance reaction coordinate and the solvent degrees of freedom, which contrasts with the diffusive crossing of the free energy barrier found in bulk solution modeling. The H₂O self-diffusion coefficient is found to be at least an order of magnitude larger than that in the bulk solution. We propose to exploit the enhanced surface ion concentration at low temperature to eliminate salts from droplets in native mass spectrometry ionization methods.

Urea Disrupts the AOT Reverse Micelle Structure at Low Temperatures

Aside from its prominent role in the excretory system, urea is also a known protein denaturant. Here, we characterize urea as it behaves in confined spaces of AOT (sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate) reverse micelles as a model of tight, confined spaces found at the subcellular level. Dynamic light scattering revealed that low temperatures (275 K) caused the smallest of the reverse micelle sizes, w₀ = 10, to destabilize and dramatically increase in apparent hydrodynamic diameter. We attribute this to urea embedded into the surfactant interface as confirmed by 2D ¹H-NOESY NMR spectroscopy. This increase in size in turn caused the hydrogen exchange between urea and water within the nanosized reverse micelles to increase as measured by 1D EXSY-NMR. A minimal enlarging effect and no increase in hydrogen exchange were observed when aqueous urea was introduced into w₀ = 15 or 20 reverse micelles, suggesting that this effect is unique to particularly small-diameter spaces (∼7 nm).

Structural and Dynamical Properties of Liquids in Confinements: A Review of Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are a powerful tool for detailed studies of altered properties of liquids in confinement, in particular, of changed structures and dynamics. They allow, on one hand, for perfect control and systematic variation of the geometries and interactions inherent in confinement situations and, on the other hand, for type-selective and position-resolved analyses of a huge variety of structural and dynamical parameters. Here, we review MD simulation studies on various types of liquids and confinements. The main focus is confined aqueous systems, but also ionic liquids and polymer and silica melts are discussed. Results for confinements featuring different interactions, sizes, shapes, and rigidity will be presented. Special attention will be given to situations in which the confined liquid and the confining matrix consist of the same type of particles and, hence, disparate liquid-matrix interactions are absent. Findings for the magnitude and the range of wall effects on molecular positions and orientations and on molecular dynamics, including vibrational motion and structural relaxation, are reviewed. Moreover, their dependence on the parameters of the confinement and their relevance to theoretical approaches to the glass transition are addressed.

On the Comparative Analysis of Different Phase Coexistences in Mesoporous Materials

Alterations of fluid phase transitions in porous materials are conventionally employed for the characterization of mesoporous solids. In the first approximation, this may be based on the application of the Kelvin equation for gas-liquid and the Gibbs-Thomson equation for solid-liquid phase equilibria for obtaining pore size distributions. Herein, we provide a comparative analysis of different phase coexistences measured in mesoporous silica solids with different pore sizes and morphology. Instead of comparing the resulting pore size distributions, we rather compare the transitions directly by using a common coordinate for varying the experiment's thermodynamic parameters based on the two equations mentioned. Both phase transitions in these coordinates produce comparable results for mesoporous solids of relatively large pore sizes. In contrast, marked differences are found for materials with smaller pore sizes. This illuminates the fact that, with reducing confinement sizes, thermodynamic fluctuations become increasingly important and different for different equilibria considered. In addition, we show that in the coordinate used for analysis, mercury intrusion matches perfectly with desorption and freezing transitions.

Confinement effects on glass-forming mixtures: Insights from a combined experimental approach to aqueous ethylene glycol solutions in silica pores

We perform nuclear magnetic resonance, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry studies to ascertain the dynamical behaviors of aqueous ethylene glycol (EG) solutions in silica pores over broad temperature ranges. Both translational and rotational motions are analyzed, and the pore diameter (2.4–9.2 nm) and the EG concentration (12–57 mol. %) are varied, leading to fully liquid or partially crystalline systems. It is found that the translational diffusion coefficient strongly decreases when the diameter is reduced, resulting in a slowdown of nearly three orders of magnitude in the narrowest pores, while the confinement effects on the rotational correlation times are moderate. For the fully liquid solutions, we attribute bulk-like and slowed down reorientation processes to the central and interfacial pore regions, respectively. This coexistence is found in all the studied pores, and, hence, the range of the wall effects on the solution dynamics does not exceed ∼1 nm. Compared to the situation in the bulk, the concentration dependence is reduced in confinements, implying that the specific interactions of the molecular species with the silica walls lead to preferential adsorption. On the other hand, bulk-like structural relaxation is not observed in the partially frozen samples, where the liquid is sandwiched between the silica walls and the ice crystallites. Under such circumstances, there is another relaxation process with a weaker temperature dependence, which is observed in various kinds of partially frozen aqueous systems and denoted as the x process.

History-Dependent Stress Relaxation of Liquids under High-Confinement: A Molecular Dynamics Study

When liquids are confined into a nanometer-scale slit, the induced layering-like film structure allows the liquid to sustain non-isotropic stresses and thus be load-bearing. Such anisotropic characteristics of liquid under confinement arise naturally from the liquids’ wavenumber dependent compressibility, which does not need solidification to take place as a prerequisite. In other words, liquids under confinement can still retain fluidity with molecules being (sub-)diffusive. However, the extensively prolonged structural relaxation times can cause hysteresis of stress relaxation of confined molecules in response to the motions of confining walls and thereby rendering the quasi-static stress tensors history-dependent. In this work, by means of molecular dynamics, stress tensors of a highly confined key base-oil component, i.e., 1-decene trimer, are calculated after its relaxation from being compressed and decompressed. A maximum of 77.1 MPa normal stress discrepancy has been detected within a triple-layer boundary film. Analyses with respect to molecular morphology indicate that among the effects (e.g., confinement, molecular structure, and film density) that can potentially affect confined stresses, the ordering status of the confined molecules plays a predominant role.

A Combined Atomic and Molecular Probe Characterization of Aromatic Hydrocarbons via PALS and ESR: Methylbenzene

A combined study of one of the simplest aromatic hydrocarbons, i.e., methylbenzene (toluene) (TOL), via the annihilation of an ortho-positronium (o-Ps) probe via positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and the rotation dynamics of nitroxide spin probe 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidinyl-1-oxy (TEMPO) using electron spin resonance (ESR) over a wide temperature range, 10–300 K, is reported. The o-Ps lifetime, τ₃, and the relative o-Ps intensity, I₃, as a function of temperature exhibit changes defining several characteristic PALS temperatures in the slowly and rapidly cooled samples. Similarly, the spectral parameter of TEMPO mobility in TOL, 2A_zz‘, and its correlation time, τ_c, reveal several effects at a set of the characteristic ESR temperatures, which were determined and compared with the PALS results. Finally, the physical origins of the changes in free volume expansion and spin probe mobility are revealed. They are reflected in a series of the mutual coincidences between the characteristic PALS and ESR temperatures and appropriate complementary thermodynamic and dynamic techniques.

Connectedness percolation of fractal liquids

We apply connectedness percolation theory to fractal liquids of hard particles, and make use of a Percus-Yevick liquid state theory combined with a geometric connectivity criterion. We find that in fractal dimensions the percolation threshold interpolates continuously between integer-dimensional values, and that it decreases monotonically with increasing (fractal) dimension. The influence of hard-core interactions is significant only for dimensions below three. Finally, our theory incorrectly suggests that a percolation threshold is absent below about two dimensions, which we attribute to the breakdown of the connectedness Percus-Yevick closure.

Cluster Assembled Silicon-Lithium Nanostructures: A Nanowire Confined Inside a Carbon Nanotube

We computationally explore an alternative to stabilize one-dimensional (1D) silicon-lithium nanowires (NWs). The Li₁₂Si₉ Zintl phase exhibits the NW [Li6Si5]∞1, combined with Y-shaped Si₄ structures. Interestingly, this NW could be assembled from the stacking of the Li₆Si₅ aromatic cluster. The [Li6Si5]∞1@CNT nanocomposite has been investigated with density functional theory (DFT), including molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations. We found that van der Waals interaction between Li’s and CNT’s walls is relevant for stabilizing this hybrid nanocomposite. This work suggests that nanostructured confinement (within CNTs) may be an alternative to stabilize this free NW, cleaning its properties regarding Li₁₂Si₉ solid phase, i.e., metallic character, concerning the perturbation provided by their environment in the Li₁₂Si₇ compound.

Solid-state NMR studies of non-ionic surfactants confined in mesoporous silica

This review gives an overview of current trends in the investigation of confined molecules such as higher alcohols, ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol as guest molecules in neat and functionalized mesoporous silica materials. All these molecules have both hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts. They are characteristic role-models for the investigation of confined surfactants. Their properties are studied by a combination of solid-state NMR and relaxometry with other physicochemical techniques and molecular dynamics techniques. It is shown that this combination delivers unique insights into the structure, arrangement, dynamical properties and the guest-host interactions inside the confinement.

Structural and Dynamical Behaviour of Colloids with Competing Interactions Confined in Slit Pores

Systems with short-range attractive and long-range repulsive interactions can form periodic modulated phases at low temperatures, such as cluster-crystal, hexagonal, lamellar and bicontinuous gyroid phases. These periodic microphases should be stable regardless of the physical origin of the interactions. However, they have not yet been experimentally observed in colloidal systems, where, in principle, the interactions can be tuned by modifying the colloidal solution. Our goal is to investigate whether the formation of some of these periodic microphases can be promoted by confinement in narrow slit pores. By performing simulations of a simple model with competing interactions, we find that both the cluster-crystal and lamellar phases can be stable up to higher temperatures than in the bulk system, whereas the hexagonal phase is destabilised at temperatures somewhat lower than in bulk. Besides, we observed that the internal ordering of the lamellar phase can be modified by changing the pore width. Interestingly, for sufficiently wide pores to host three lamellae, there is a range of temperatures for which the two lamellae close to the walls are internally ordered, whereas the one at the centre of the pore remains internally disordered. We also find that particle diffusion under confinement exhibits a complex dependence with the pore width and with the density, obtaining larger and smaller values of the diffusion coefficient than in the corresponding bulk system.

Isomorphs in nanoconfined liquids

We study in this paper the possible existence of Roskilde-simple liquids and their isomorphs in a rough-wall nanoconfinement. Isomorphs are curves in the thermodynamic phase diagram along which structure and dynamics are invariant in suitable nondimensionalized units. Two model liquids using molecular dynamics computer simulations are considered: the single-component Lennard-Jones (LJ) liquid and the Kob-Andersen binary LJ mixture, both of which in the bulk phases are known to have good isomorphs. Nanoconfinement is implemented by adopting a slit-pore geometry with fcc crystalline walls; this implies inhomogenous density profiles both parallel and perpendicular to the confining walls. Despite this fact and consistent with an earlier study [Ingebrigtsen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2013, 111, 235901] we find that these two nanoconfined liquids have isomorphs to a good approximation. More specifically, we show good invariance along the isomorphs of inhomogenous density profiles, mean-square displacements, and higher-order structures probed using the topological cluster classification algorithm. Our study thus provides an alternative framework for understanding nanoconfined liquids.

A novel hybrid method for the calculation of methane hydrate-water interfacial tension along the three-phase (hydrate-liquid water-vapor) equilibrium line

We use a novel hybrid method to explore the temperature dependence of the solid-liquid interfacial tension of a system that consists of solid methane hydrate and liquid water. The calculated values along the three-phase (hydrate-liquid water-vapor) equilibrium line are obtained through the combination of available experimental measurements and computational results that are based on approaches at the atomistic scale, including molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo. An extensive comparison with available experimental and computational studies is performed, and a critical assessment and re-evaluation of previously reported data is presented.

Confinement driven anomalous freezing in nano porous spray dried microspheres

One-step evaporative jamming of colloidal silica particles in contact-free spray droplets resulted in well-defined powder micro-granules with interstitial nanopores. This paper reports the anomalous freezing behaviour of confined water in the microspheres synthesized using spray drying. It has been revealed that the freezing point of water in these microspheres gets significantly lowered (∼-45 °C) owing to the confinement effect. Thermoporometry results are corroborated with the structural details obtained using complementary techniques of gas adsorption measurements and small-angle x-ray scattering.

Insights into the Solubility of Carbon Dioxide in Grafted Mesoporous Silica for the Catalytic Synthesis of Cyclic Carbonates by Nanoconfinement

Gas solubility can go beyond classical bulk-liquid Henry's law saturation under the nanoconfinement of a liquid phase. This concept establishes the foundation of the current study for developing a novel catalytic system for transformation of carbon dioxide to cyclic carbonates at mild conditions with major emphasis on application for CO₂ capture and utilization. A series of mesoporous silica-based supports of various pore sizes and shapes grafted with a quaternary ammonium salt is synthesized and characterized. CO₂ sorption in styrene oxide, either in bulk or nanoconfined state, as well as catalytic reactivity for CO₂ transformation into styrene carbonate, are experimentally evaluated. The family of mesoporous catalysts with aligned cylindrical pores (MCM-41 and SBA-15) with pore sizes ranging from 3.5 to 9 nm exhibit enhanced sorption of CO₂ in nanoconfined styrene oxide with maximum sorption capacity taking place in MCM-41 with the smallest pore size. The catalysts with interconnected cylindrical pores (KIT-6) with pore sizes ranging from 4.5 to 8.7 nm showed CO₂ solubilities almost equal to the bulk solubility of styrene oxide. Monte Carlo simulations revealed that the oversolubility in styrene oxide confined complex is directly related to the density of adsorbed solvent in the nanopore, which is less than its bulk density. Catalytic reactivities correlate with CO₂ sorption enhancement, showing higher turnover frequencies for catalysts having higher CO₂ sorption capacity. The turnover frequency is increased by a factor of 7.5 for grafted MCM-41 with the smallest pore size with nanoconfined styrene oxide in comparison to the homogeneous reaction implemented in bulk.

Laser-excited elastic guided waves reveal the complex mechanics of nanoporous silicon

Nanoporosity in silicon leads to completely new functionalities of this mainstream semiconductor. A difficult to assess mechanics has however significantly limited its application in fields ranging from nanofluidics and biosensorics to drug delivery, energy storage and photonics. Here, we present a study on laser-excited elastic guided waves detected contactless and non-destructively in dry and liquid-infused single-crystalline porous silicon. These experiments reveal that the self-organised formation of 100 billions of parallel nanopores per square centimetre cross section results in a nearly isotropic elasticity perpendicular to the pore axes and an 80% effective stiffness reduction, altogether leading to significant deviations from the cubic anisotropy observed in bulk silicon. Our thorough assessment of the wafer-scale mechanics of nanoporous silicon provides the base for predictive applications in robust on-chip devices and evidences that recent breakthroughs in laser ultrasonics open up entirely new frontiers for in-situ, non-destructive mechanical characterisation of dry and liquid-functionalised porous materials.

Assessing mechanics of nanoporous silicon is challenging, but important for new applications. Here, the authors use non-destructive laser-excited elastic guided waves detected contactless, to study dry and liquid-infused single-crystalline porous silicon, revealing its complex mechanics and significant deviations from bulk silicon.

On the Segmental Dynamics and the Glass Transition Behavior of Poly(2-vinylpyridine) in One- and Two-Dimensional Nanometric Confinement

Geometric nanoconfinement, in one and two dimensions, has a fundamental influence on the segmental dynamics of polymer glass-formers and can be markedly different from that observed in the bulk state. In this work, with the use of dielectric spectroscopy, we have investigated the glass transition behavior of poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) confined within alumina nanopores and prepared as a thin film supported on a silicon substrate. P2VP is known to exhibit strong, attractive interactions with confining surfaces due to the ability to form hydrogen bonds. Obtained results show no changes in the temperature evolution of the α-relaxation time in nanopores down to 20 nm size and 24 nm thin film. There is also no evidence of an out-of-equilibrium behavior observed for other glass-forming systems confined at the nanoscale. Nevertheless, in both cases, the confinement effect is seen as a substantial broadening of the α-relaxation time distribution. We discussed the results in terms of the importance of the interfacial energy between the polymer and various substrates, the sensitivity of the glass-transition temperature to density fluctuations, and the density scaling concept.

Dynamics of Emim+ in [Emim][TFSI]/LiTFSI Solutions as Bulk and under Confinement in a Quasi-liquid Solid Electrolyte

Quasi-liquid solid electrolytes are a promising alternative for next-generation Li batteries. These systems combine the safety of solid electrolytes with the desired properties of liquids and are typically formed by solutions of Li salts in ionic liquids incorporated into solid matrices. Here, we present a fundamental understanding of the transport properties in solutions of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Emim][TFSI]), either in bulk form or incorporated in a boron nitride (BN) matrix. We performed a series of quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiments that, given the high incoherent neutron scattering cross section of hydrogen, allowed us to focus on the Emim⁺ dynamics. First, [Emim][TFSI]/LiTFSI solutions (0.5 and 2.5 mol·kg^-1) were investigated and we show how the increase in the concentration reduces the Emim⁺ mobility and increases the activation energy of their long-range motions. Then, the 0.5 mol·kg^-1 solution was incorporated into the BN matrix and we report that the diffusivities of the Emim⁺ cations that remain mobile under confinement are highly accelerated in comparison with the bulk sample and the activation energy of these motions is drastically reduced. We present the experimental evidence that this effect is related to the content of the Emim⁺ cations immobilized near the surfaces of the BN pores.

Strong Enhancement of Nanoconfined Water Mobility by a Structure Breaking Salt

For the majority of the water present on earth, the two most important factors influencing its behavior are confinement, in either inorganic or organic matrixes, and the presence of solutes. Here, we investigate the effect of confinement in 3 nm pores on water diffusivity in aqueous solutions with archetypical solutes, a structure making (kosmotrope) NaCl and a structure breaking (chaotrope) KCl, up to 1.0 M in concentration. The water diffusivity in bulk aqueous solutions in such a concentration range is known to decrease very slightly in the presence of NaCl and increase very slightly in the presence of KCl. However, here we observe the water diffusivity in confined H₂O-KCl increases by a factor of 2 compared to the pure water diffusivity in the same confinement. This unusually strong cumulative effect of confinement and a structure breaking additive may have profound implications for the mobility and transport of aqueous species in nature.

On the Gibbs-Thomson equation for the crystallization of confined fluids

The Gibbs-Thomson (GT) equation describes the shift of the crystallization temperature for a confined fluid with respect to the bulk as a function of pore size. While this century old relation is successfully used to analyze experiments, its derivations found in the literature often rely on nucleation theory arguments (i.e., kinetics instead of thermodynamics) or fail to state their assumptions, therefore leading to similar but different expressions. Here, we revisit the derivation of the GT equation to clarify the system definition, corresponding thermodynamic ensemble, and assumptions made along the way. We also discuss the role of the thermodynamic conditions in the external reservoir on the final result. We then turn to numerical simulations of a model system to compute independently the various terms entering in the GT equation and compare the predictions of the latter with the melting temperatures determined under confinement by means of hyper-parallel tempering grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. We highlight some difficulties related to the sampling of crystallization under confinement in simulations. Overall, despite its limitations, the GT equation may provide an interesting alternative route to predict the melting temperature in large pores using molecular simulations to evaluate the relevant quantities entering in this equation. This approach could, for example, be used to investigate the nanoscale capillary freezing of ionic liquids recently observed experimentally between the tip of an atomic force microscope and a substrate.

Static dielectric permittivity of ionic liquids ultraconfined in carbon nanotubes

In this work the parallel component of the static dielectric permittivity, ϵ II of ionic liquids ultraconfined into flexible carbon nanotubes of radius of 1.2 nm and 2.4 nm is evaluated from molecular dynamics simulations. We show an enhancement of ϵ II with respect to bulk value and a counter-intuitive temperature dependence. Indeed an increase of ϵ II as a function of the temperature opposed to a bulk behavior is evidenced. Increase in ϵ II is the result of the strong orientation of ionic liquid close to the pore wall. The temperature dependence is the consequence of the thermal fluctuations increasing the dipolar fluctuations such that the strong orientation is conserved. Eventually, we show a molecular stacking between [C4mim+][Tf2N−] and CNT decreasing dipolar fluctuations close to the CNT surface reducing ϵ II .

A survey of multiscale modeling: Foundations, historical milestones, current status, and future prospects

Research problems in the domains of physical, engineering, biological sciences often span multiple time and length scales, owing to the complexity of information transfer underlying mechanisms. Multiscale modeling (MSM) and high-performance computing (HPC) have emerged as indispensable tools for tackling such complex problems. We review the foundations, historical developments, and current paradigms in MSM. A paradigm shift in MSM implementations is being fueled by the rapid advances and emerging paradigms in HPC at the dawn of exascale computing. Moreover, amidst the explosion of data science, engineering, and medicine, machine learning (ML) integrated with MSM is poised to enhance the capabilities of standard MSM approaches significantly, particularly in the face of increasing problem complexity. The potential to blend MSM, HPC, and ML presents opportunities for unbound innovation and promises to represent the future of MSM and explainable ML that will likely define the fields in the 21st century.

Ranking the Efficiency of Gas Hydrate Anti-agglomerants through Molecular Dynamic Simulations

Using both computational and experimental methods, the capacity of four different surfactant molecules to inhibit the agglomeration of sII hydrate particles was assessed. The computational simulations were carried out using both steered and non-steered molecular dynamics (MD), simulating the coalescence process of a hydrate slab and a water droplet, both covered with surfactant molecules. The surfactants were ranked according to free energy calculations (steered MD) and the number of agglomeration events (non-steered MD). The experimental work was based on rocking cell measurements, determining the minimum effective dose necessary to inhibit agglomeration. Overall, good agreement was obtained between the performance predicted by the simulations and the experimental measurements. Moreover, the simulations allowed us to gain additional insights that are not directly accessible via experiments, such as an analysis of the mass density profiles, the diffusion coefficients, or the orientations of the long tails.
