Abstract
Women are at greater risk of common mental disorders. The intersectionality concept provides a framework to examine the effects of multiple social disadvantages on women's mental health. We conducted a systematic review to collect and analyse information to identify the quantitative methodologies and study designs used in intersectional research to examine women's mental health and multiple social disadvantages. Included studies used accepted statistical methods to explore the intersectional effects of gender and one or more types of social disadvantage from the PROGRESS-Plus inequity framework: a place of residence, race/ethnicity, occupation, gender/ sex, religion, education, socioeconomic status, social capital (O'Neill et al. J Clin Epidemiol 67:56-64, 2014). The scope of this systematic review was limited to studies that analysed common mental disorders in women and men comparatively. Studies focusing on only one gender were excluded, ensuring a comprehensive comparative analysis of the intersection of social disadvantages in mental health.Twelve papers were included in the narrative synthesis (Table 1). Eight of the included papers (67%) reported an intersectional effect of gender and one or more additional types of social disadvantage. The multiplicative effect of gender and socioeconomic status on the risk of common mental disorders was the most commonly reported interaction. This systematic review shows that multiplicative and simultaneous interactions of multiple social disadvantage increase the risk of common mental disorders experienced by women. Moreover, it underlines the potential for quantitative research methods to complement qualitative intersectionality research on gender and mental health. The findings of this systematic review highlight the importance of multiple social disadvantage in understanding the increased risk of mental health experienced by women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sex and gender have profound effects on disease prevalence, presentation, and outcome, but these issues are not covered in depth in standard medical school curricula. To improve understanding of women's health, an intensive 1-month class was offered to fourth-year medical students. METHODS The class combined background lectures on the biological and social determinants of women's health with presentations on specific medical conditions by practicing clinicians and students. Students' anonymous responses to end-of-class evaluation used by Stony Brook University School of Medicine as well as pre- and post-class answers to the question "why are women twice as likely to go to the doctor" were analyzed using quantitative, descriptive, and qualitative approaches. RESULTS The class was given between 2017 and 2022 to a total of 154 students. Course evaluations were submitted by 133 students. Over 80% of responders ranked the class as good or excellent and many expressed surprise about how much sex and gender influence health. Furthermore, before taking the class responders favored gender stereotypes (82%) and OB/GYN visits (56%) as the main reasons why women utilize healthcare more often than men, whereas only 31% of post-class answers included these factors (p < .0001), which were replaced by others including misdiagnosis, high rate of adverse effects of medications, implicit bias, and longevity. CONCLUSION A dedicated class given to students at the end of their undergraduate medical training increased awareness and knowledge of the effects of sex and gender on women's health.

Abstract
Introduction The opioid epidemic continues to escalate in the United States, exacerbated significantly by the COVID-19 pandemic. Necessary steps in acute care medicine to expand efforts to combat this epidemic involve increased emergency department engagement of patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) and an incorporation of evolving sex- and gender-based factors that affect this disease presentation and management course. Methods & Aims An ever-increasing amount of peer-reviewed, evidence-based literature has shed light on the important biologic and sociocultural variables, specifically sex and gender, which impact OUD trajectory and outcomes. As a collaborative effort of the Sex and Gender in Emergency Medicine (SGEM) Interest Group, a community within the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), we sought to consider, review, and summarize clinically pertinent information as a comprehensive introduction to this topic for the emergency medicine (EM) clinician and educator. Results A selected overview of current evidence-based data and publications, to include current epidemiologic trends, opioid-based physiology and pathophysiology, as well as opioid use disorder management and outcomes, through a sex- and gender-based lens, was reviewed and included in this summary. Also discussed are implications and recommendations for EM educators seeking insight and resources for continuing, graduate, and/or undergraduate education on this topic. Conclusion Incorporation of emerging sex- and gender-specific scientific knowledge into clinical context represents a critical link to effective management of the OUD patient in the ED. Similarly, integration of this information into EM education represents an essential step for both sex- and gender-based medicine and opioid-specific training.

Abstract
PURPOSE Physical inactivity, a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is independently associated with stroke. Though some prior data have suggested sex differences in levels of physical activity, whether there are sex differences in the role of physical activity in primary stroke prevention is largely unknown. This systematic review identifies and describes recent findings on sex differences in the association between physical activity and incident (first-ever) stroke. This review also describes the current evidence on the strength of the association between physical activity and a reduced stroke risk in women in particular. METHODS Using a prespecified strategy, PubMed/MEDLINE and Cochrane Central were searched to identify observational studies or trials published from 2000 to 2020 and reporting sex differences in physical activity and incident stroke. To be included, among other criteria, studies had to include sex-specific effect estimates from women, men, or both. Titles, abstracts, and full-text articles were screened to identify studies meeting the inclusion criteria, and adjusted sex-specific estimates of the association between physical activity and incident stroke for total stroke (ischemic plus hemorrhagic) or ischemic stroke were abstracted. FINDINGS Thirty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Of 17 studies that included data on total incident stroke (ischemic and hemorrhagic combined) in both women and men, 7 (41%) showed similar associations between physical activity and incident stroke between women and men, 6 (35%) suggested a significant effect in women but not in men, and 3 (18%) showed a significant effect in men but not in women. Of 10 studies that included data on ischemic stroke in women and men, 5 (50%) suggested similar effects in women and men, 4 (40%) suggested a significant effect in women but not in men, and 1 (10%) showed an effect in men but not women. In women specifically, the majority of included studies demonstrated a reduced risk for incident stroke with physical activity, with relative risk reductions ranging from 11% to 72%, though most estimates fell between 20% and 40%. IMPLICATIONS The majority of studies indicated a clear association between physical activity and a reduction in stroke risk. Studies were split as to the potential for sex differences in this association. Future prospective investigations should identify strategies for the use of increased physical activity for primary stroke prevention, with sex-specific considerations as warranted. The data on sex-specific dose-response relationship between physical activity and stroke risk are inconclusive and warrant more research.

Abstract
Women were historically excluded from clinical trials. Despite numerous guidance and policy, we are still seeing this exclusion throughout the research pipeline more than 40 years later. The progress that has been made to include women in clinical trials and to report data disaggregated by sex continues to be limited due to multiple factors. In this paper, we aim to review some of the current FDA funding, policies, and practice in regard to inclusion of biological sex and sociocultural gender variables. This paper provides some recommendations and actionable policies to ensure that women as well as men can benefit from the updated biomedical research and clinical trials designed to take these variables into account. Strong regulations and mandates should be in place to direct pharmaceutical companies and industry toward the inclusion of women in biomedical research instead of a series of guidelines and recommendations that have not led to sufficient progress. Additionally, regulatory agencies should be completely independent in their decision-making process. Provision of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) funding by industry user fee for instance, might compromise FDA's impartiality in the approval process. Finally, better oversight is needed by the FDA for the labeling of drugs. FDA has made a significant contribution to the progress that has been made to this date, however, some of the current action plans including the Drug Trial Snapshots need to be refined to be more responsive to the current needs.

Abstract
Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) affects over 600,000 Americans per year and is a common diagnostic consideration among emergency department patients. Although there are well-documented differences in the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of cardiovascular conditions, such as ischemic heart disease and stroke, the influence of sex and gender on PE remains poorly understood. The overall age-adjusted incidence of PE is similar in women and men, but women have higher relative rates of PE during early and mid-adulthood (ages 20-40 years); whereas, men have higher rates of PE after age 60 years. Women are tested for PE at far higher rates than men, yet women who undergo computed tomography pulmonary angiography are ultimately diagnosed with PE 35%-55% less often than men. Among those diagnosed with PE, women are more likely to have severe clinical features, such as hypotension and signs of right ventricular dysfunction. When controlled for PE severity, women are less likely to receive reperfusion therapies, such as thrombolysis. Finally, women have more bleeding complications for all types of anticoagulation. Further investigation of possible sex-specific diagnostic and treatment algorithms is necessary in order to more accurately detect and treat acute PE in non-pregnant adults.

Abstract
For the most part, stroke is a disease of old age. With the predicted increase in the aged population and longer life expectancies, the number and proportion of people living with stroke is expected to increase, especially among women and the elderly. For those who suffer stroke, there is a high likelihood of experiencing death and severe disability. Therefore, the issue of stroke amongst women (and men) is a key priority in global public health. In this review, we consider sex and gender differences in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, and we summarize data that outlines the epidemiology, risk factor, treatment recovery and prevention of stroke. We discuss possible mechanisms for the sex differences, specifically in areas of biology, medical management and social and behavioral context. With evidence showing that women and men experience stroke differently, sex must be taken into account when treating patients and when designing clinical trials.

Abstract
Background Clinical practice guideline ( CPG ) developers have yet to endorse a consistent and systematic approach for considering sex-specific cardiovascular information in CPG s. This article describes an initiative led by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society to determine the feasibility and outcomes of a structured process for considering sex in a CPG for the management of ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction. Methods and Results A sex and gender champion was appointed to the guideline development committee. The feasibility of tailoring the CPG to sex was ascertained by recording (1) the male-female distribution of the study population, (2) the adequacy of sex-specific representation in each study using the participation/prevalence ratio, and (3) whether data were disaggregated by sex. The outcome was to determine whether recommendations for CPG s based on an assessment of the evidence should differ by sex. In total, 175 studies were included. The mean percentage of female participants reported in the studies was 24.5% ( SD : 6.6%; minimum: 0%; maximum: 51%). The mean participation/prevalence ratio was 0.62 ( SD : 0.16; minimum: 0.00; maximum: 1.19). Eighteen (10.2%) studies disaggregated the data by sex. Based on the participation/prevalence ratio and the sex-specific analyses presented, only 1 study provided adequate evidence to confidently inform the applicability of the CPG recommendations to male and female patients. Conclusions Implementing a systematic process for critically appraising sex-specific evidence for CPG s was straightforward and feasible. Inadequate enrollment and reporting by sex hindered comprehensive sex-specific assessment of the quality of evidence and strength of recommendations for a CPG on the management of ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study sought to create an integrated vocabulary system that addresses the lack of standardized health terminology in gender and sexual orientation. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated computational efficiency, coverage, query-based term tagging, randomly selected term tagging, and mappings to existing terminology systems (including ICD (International Classification of Diseases), DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ), SNOMED (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine), MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), and National Cancer Institute Thesaurus). RESULTS We published version 2 of the Gender, Sex, and Sexual Orientation (GSSO) ontology with over 10 000 entries with definitions, a readable hierarchy system, and over 14 000 database mappings. Over 70% of terms had no mapping in any other available ontology. DISCUSSION We created the GSSO and made it publicly available on the National Center for Biomedical Ontology BioPortal and on GitHub. It includes clarifications on over 200 slang terms, 190 pronouns with linked example usages, and over 200 nonbinary and culturally specific gender identities. CONCLUSIONS Gender and sexual orientation continue to represent crucial areas of medical practice and research with evolving terminology. The GSSO helps address this gap by providing a centralized data resource.

Educating the Scientific Workforce on Sex and Gender Considerations in Research: A National Scan of the Literature and Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health Programs. Abstract
Background: This study was a national scan of education resources on integrating sex and gender considerations into research. The purpose was to assess capacity for educating researchers and to identify gaps, with implications for implementation of guidelines or mandates to consider sex and gender differences in research. Information sources were U.S. training programs in women's health and sex/gender difference research, Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH), and published peer-reviewed biomedical literature. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study used multiple methods: a national survey and a comprehensive literature review. BIRCWH leaders responded to a survey regarding education on sex/gender difference research for BIRCWH scholars (response rate 100%, 20 of 20). A comprehensive literature review was conducted for 1993-2018. Results: Nearly half (45%) of BIRCWH institutions offered education on integrating sex or gender differences in clinical translational research; of those, roughly half (54%) offered in-person training and one-third (31%) offered content within existing for-credit courses. Respondents preferred online training (84%) to in-person offerings or reference materials (47% and 42% respectively). Published indexed literature on sex or gender differences has quadrupled since 1993, although growth in these publications remained flat in the most recent six years. Conclusions: Published resources to educate researchers on integrating sex and gender differences into medical research have increased, and BIRCWH programs connect scholars to national resources. Educational gaps remain due to limited access to curricula on applied research approaches, design, and methods for sex/gender difference research. BIRCWH programs desire curricula that are easily accessible online and asynchronously; sanctioned and supported by national thought leaders; linked to required training such as rigor and reproducibility; foster collaboration; and offer practical applications. Evidence-based, high-quality educational curricula and a dissemination plan are needed to enhance the adoption and integration of sex and gender into scientific endeavors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sepsis is a leading cause of mortality in critically ill patients. Recently, it has been recognised that sex may contribute to a differential risk for developing sepsis and it remains uncertain if the prognosis of sepsis varies between the sexes. The aim of this systematic review is to summarise the available evidence to assess the role of sex as a prognostic factor in patients with sepsis managed in the intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is a systematic review protocol of prognostic studies of sex in patients with sepsis managed in the ICU. The primary outcomes include all-cause hospital mortality and all-cause hospital mortality during the first 28 days. The secondary outcomes include all-cause hospital mortality during the first 7 days and all-cause mortality at 1 year. We will conduct a search strategy based on the population (sepsis), the prognostic factor (sex), the outcome of interest (mortality) and prognostic study methods. We will search in the following databases up to December 2019: MEDLINE Ovid (from 1976), Embase Elsevier (from 1974), Web of Science and two trial registries. We will impose no language restrictions. Two authors will independently screen titles, abstracts and full-text articles for eligibility of studies, and subsequently extract data. Two authors will independently assess the risk of bias of each study using the Quality in Prognostic Studies (QUIPS) tool. If possible, we will carry out a meta-analysis to provide a pooled prognostic effect estimate for each outcome. We will use the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system to assess the quality of evidence. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval will not be required. Findings from this review will be reported in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Additionally, the results will be disseminated at conferences and in the mass media. Abstract
There is evidence that sex- and gender-related factors are involved in cannabis patterns of use, health effects and biological mechanisms. Women and men report different cannabis use disorder (CUD) symptoms, with women reporting worse withdrawal symptoms than men. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the effectiveness of cannabis pharmacological interventions for women and men and the uptake of sex- and gender-based analysis in the included studies. Two reviewers performed the full-paper screening, and data was extracted by one researcher. The search yielded 6098 unique records—of which, 68 were full-paper screened. Four articles met the eligibility criteria for inclusion. From the randomized clinical studies of pharmacological interventions, few studies report sex-disaggregated outcomes for women and men. Despite emergent evidence showing the influence of sex and gender factors in cannabis research, sex-disaggregated outcomes in pharmacological interventions is lacking. Sex- and gender-based analysis is incipient in the included articles. Future research should explore more comprehensive inclusion of sex- and gender-related aspects in pharmacological treatments for CUD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Searching for topics within large biomedical databases can be challenging, especially when topics are complex, diffuse, emerging or lack definitional clarity. Experimentally derived topic search filters offer a reliable solution to effective retrieval; however, their number and range of subject foci remain unknown. OBJECTIVES This systematic scoping review aims to identify and describe available experimentally developed topic search filters. METHODS Reports on topic search filter development (1990-) were sought using grey literature sources and 15 databases. Reports describing the conception and prospective development of a database-specific topic search and including an objectively measured estimate of its performance ('sensitivity') were included. RESULTS Fifty-four reports met inclusion criteria. Data were extracted and thematically synthesised to describe the characteristics of 58 topic search filters. DISCUSSION Topic search filters are proliferating and cover a wide range of subjects. Filter reports, however, often lack clear definitions of concepts and topic scope to guide users. Without standardised terminology, filters are challenging to find. Information specialists may benefit from a centralised topic filter repository and appraisal checklists to facilitate quality assessment. CONCLUSION Findings will help information specialists identify existing topic search filters and assist filter developers to build on current knowledge in the field.

Abstract
New knowledge about male-female differences in pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment is shifting the practice of medicine from a one-size-fits all approach to a more individualized process that considers sex-specific interventions at the point of care. In this article, we review how clinical practice guideline committees can incorporate a structured framework to determine whether sex-specific assessments of the quality of the evidence or the particular recommendations should be made. The process can be operationalized by societies who author clinical practice guidelines by developing formal policies to approach biological sex in a systematic way, and by ensuring that writing committees include an individual who will champion the formal appraisal of the literature for associations between sex and the outcomes of interest. Ongoing challenges are discussed, and solutions are provided for how to disaggregate the evidence, how to assess bias, how to improve search strategies, and what to do when the data are insufficient to make sex-specific recommendations. Application of sex-specific recommendations will involve routinely asking whether the presentation, diagnostic workup, or management might change for each patient if they were the opposite sex.

Abstract
Symptom recognition and self-management is instrumental in reducing the number of deaths related to coronary artery disease (CAD) in women. The purpose of this study was to synthesize qualitative research evidence on the self-management of cardiac pain and associated symptoms in women. Seven databases were systematically searched, and the concepts of the Individual and Family Self-Management Theory were used as the framework for data extraction and analysis. Search strategies yielded 22,402 citations, from which 35 qualitative studies were included in a final meta-summary, comprising data from 769 participants, including 437 (57%) women. The available literature focused cardiac pain self-management from a binary sex and gender perspective. Ethnicity was indicated in 19 (54%) studies. Results support individualized intervention strategies that promote goal setting and action planning, management of physical and emotional responses, and social facilitation provided through social support.

Abstract
Objective The most used search engine for scientific literature, PubMed, provides tools to filter results by several fields. When searching for reports on clinical trials, sample size can be among the most important factors to consider. However, PubMed does not currently provide any means of filtering search results by sample size. Such a filtering tool would be useful in a variety of situations, including meta-analyses or state-of-the-art analyses to support experimental therapies. In this work, a tool was developed to filter articles identified by PubMed based on their reported sample sizes. Materials and Methods A search engine was designed to send queries to PubMed, retrieve results, and compute estimates of reported sample sizes using a combination of syntactical and machine learning methods. The sample size search tool is publicly available for download at http://ihealth.uemc.es. Its accuracy was assessed against a manually annotated database of 750 random clinical trials returned by PubMed. Results Validation tests show that the sample size search tool is able to accurately (1) estimate sample size for 70% of abstracts and (2) classify 85% of abstracts into sample size quartiles. Conclusions The proposed tool was validated as useful for advanced PubMed searches of clinical trials when the user is interested in identifying trials of a given sample size.

Abstract
The National Institutes of Health recently highlighted the significant role of sex as a biological variable (SABV) in research design, outcome and reproducibility, mandating that this variable be accounted for in all its funded research studies. This move has resulted in a rapidly increasing body of literature on SABV with important implications for changing the clinical practice of emergency medicine (EM). Translation of this new knowledge to the bedside requires an understanding of how sex-based research will ultimately impact patient care. We use three case-based scenarios in acute myocardial infarction, acute ischemic stroke and important considerations in pharmacologic therapy administration to highlight available data on SABV in evidence-based research to provide the EM community with an important foundation for future integration of patient sex in the delivery of emergency care as gaps in research are filled.

Abstract
Objective This study explored the effectiveness of search filters in identifying sex- and gender-specific data in health promotion studies that are indexed in MEDLINE. Methods Literature searches were conducted to identify studies on patient or consumer attitudes and behaviors toward colorectal cancer screening, nutritional labeling, and influenza vaccination. Publications reporting sex- or gender-specific outcome data constituted the gold standards for this study. The sensitivity and precision of previously published gender-specific filters, as well as individual filter component terms, were calculated and compared with values identified in prior studies. Results The sensitivity and precision of published sex or gender filters varied across topics. Sensitivity values ranged from 14.3% to 92.5%, while precision varied from 17.9% to 51.4%. These filters were less sensitive and less precise in their identification of relevant studies than has been reported in previous studies. Further, while the MEDLINE Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) term “Sex Factors” achieved the greatest average precision (59.3%) of any individual filter term, the MEDLINE check tag “Female” returned the highest average sensitivity (90.1%), with an average precision of 25.0% across topics. Conclusions Although search filters can facilitate the identification of research evidence to enable decision making, variability in study abstracting and indexing can limit the generalizability and usability of these filters. This potential for variability should be considered when deciding to incorporate a search filter into any literature search. This research highlights the importance of this awareness when developing strategies for searching the published literature and the potential value of supplementing database searching with other methods of study identification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The importance of sex and gender in the diagnosis and management of health conditions is well established, but the extent to which this evidence is integrated into clinical practice guidelines remains unknown. We aimed to determine the proportion of Canadian clinical practice guidelines that integrate evidence on sex and gender considerations. METHODS We searched the Canadian Medical Association's CPG Infobase, PubMed, all provincial/territorial websites and websites of professional organizations for English- and French-language Canadian clinical practice guidelines published between January 2013 and June 2015 on selected conditions identified as priorities by policy-makers and practitioners. Citations and text were searched electronically using keyword terms related to sex and gender. Three investigators independently analyzed and categorized the content of text-positive clinical practice guidelines based on clinical relevance for practitioners. RESULTS Of the 118 clinical practice guidelines that met the inclusion criteria, 79 (66.9%) were text-positive for sex and/or gender keywords; 8 (10%) of the 79 used the keywords only in relation to pregnancy. Of the remaining 71 guidelines, 25 (35%) contained sex-related diagnostic or management recommendations. An additional 5 (7%) contained recommendations for sex-specific laboratory reference values, 29 (41%) referred to differences in epidemiologic features or risk factors only, and 12 (17%) contained nonrelevant mentions of search keywords. Twenty-five (35%) of the text-positive guidelines used the terms "sex" and/or "gender" correctly. INTERPRETATION Recommendations related to sex and gender are inconsistently reported in Canadian clinical practice guidelines. Guidelines such as the Sex and Gender Equity in Research guidelines may help inform the meaningful inclusion of sex and gender evidence in the development of clinical practice guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite overwhelming evidence that sex and gender are critical factors in the delivery and practice of medicine, there is no unified sex- and gender-based medicine (SGBM) undergraduate medical education curriculum. Two Workshops within the 2015 Sex and Gender Medical Education Summit: a Roadmap to Curricular Innovation sought to lay the framework for such a curriculum. METHODS Attendees to the Sex and Gender Educational Summit self-selected attendance for one of two Workshops: (A) Utilization of SGBM Resources in U.S. Medical Schools or (B) Creating SGBM Student Competencies. RESULTS Workshop A identified gaps in existing curricula as well as strategies for incorporating available SGBM content into existing educational activities or curricular threads. Focus was given to the use of advisory committees to nurture collaboration and sharing of resources. Workshop B created a framework for national SGBM competencies by adapting existing materials from women's health curricula such as Brown University's SGBM Emergency Medicine subspecialty. The importance of student engagement, assessment, and faculty development were stressed as well as engaging the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in awareness of the vital nature of including SGBM content into all medical school curricula. CONCLUSION These Workshops provided a forum for national and international institutional representatives to lay a foundation for integration of SGBM into medical school curricula and the development of national SGBM Student Competencies.

Abstract
In the era of individualized medicine, training future scientists and health-care providers in the principles of sex- and gender-based differences in health and disease is critical in order to optimize patient care. International successes to incorporate these concepts into medical curricula can provide a template for others to follow. Methodologies and resources are provided that can be adopted and adapted to specific needs of other institutions and learning situations.

Abstract
Background Sex- and gender-based medicine (SGBM) aims to (1) delineate and investigate sex- and gender-based differences in health, disease, and response to treatment and (2) apply that knowledge to clinical care to improve the health of both women and men. However, the integration of SGBM into medical school curricula is often haphazard and poorly defined; schools often do not know the current status of SGBM content in their curricula, even if they are committed to addressing gaps and improving SGBM delivery. Therefore, complete auditing and accounting of SGBM content in the existing medical school curriculum is necessary to determine the baseline status and prepare for successful integration of SGBM content into that curriculum. Methods A review of course syllabi and lecture objectives as well as a targeted data analysis of the Curriculum Management and Information Tool (CurrMIT) were completed prior to a real-time curriculum audit. Subsequently, six “student scholars,” three first-year and three second-year medical students, were recruited and trained to audit the first 2 years of the medical school curriculum for SGBM content, thus completing an audit for both of the pre-clinical years simultaneously. A qualitative analysis and a post-audit comparative analysis were completed to assess the level of SGBM instruction at our institution. Results The review of syllabi and the CurrMIT data analysis did not generate a meaningful catalogue of SGBM content in the curriculum; most of the content identified specifically targeted women’s or men’s health topics and not sex- or gender-based differences. The real-time student audit of the existing curriculum at Texas Tech revealed that most of the SGBM material was focused on the physiological/anatomical sex differences or gender differences in disease prevalence, with minimal coverage of sex- or gender-based differences in diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and outcomes. Conclusions The real-time student scholar audit was effective in identifying SGBM content in the existing medical school curriculum that was not possible with a retrospective review of course syllabi and lecture objectives or curriculum databases such as the CurrMIT. The audit results revealed the need for improved efforts to teach SGBM topics in our school’s pre-clinical curriculum.
