Abstract
With the advancements in dental science and the growing need for improved dental health, it has become imperative to develop new implant materials which possess better geometrical, mechanical, and physical properties. The oral environment is a corrosive environment and the relative motion between the teeth also makes the environment more hostile. Therefore, the combined corrosion and tribology commonly known as tribocorrosion of implants needs to be studied. The complex shapes of the dental implants and the high-performance requirements of these implants make manufacturing difficult by conventional manufacturing processes. With the advent of additive manufacturing or 3D-printing, the development of implants has become easy. However, the various requirements such as surface roughness, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance further make the manufacturing of implants difficult. The current paper reviews the various studies related to3D-printed implants. Also, the paper tries to highlight the role of 3D-Printing can play in the area of dental implants. Further studies both experimental and numerical are needed to devise optimized conditions for 3D-printing implants to develop implants with improved mechanical, corrosion, and biological properties.

Abstract
Current regenerative medicine tactics focus on regenerating tissue structures pathologically modified by cell transplantation in combination with supporting scaffolds and biomolecules. Natural and synthetic polymers, bioresorbable inorganic and hybrid materials, and tissue decellularized were deemed biomaterials scaffolding because of their improved structural, mechanical, and biological abilities.Various biomaterials, existing treatment methodologies and emerging technologies in the field of Three-dimensional (3D) and hydrogel processing, and the unique fabric concerns for tissue engineering. A scaffold that acts as a transient matrix for cell proliferation and extracellular matrix deposition, with subsequent expansion, is needed to restore or regenerate the tissue. Diverse technologies are combined to produce porous tissue regenerative and tailored release of bioactive substances in applications of tissue engineering. Tissue engineering scaffolds are crucial ingredients. This paper discusses an overview of the various scaffold kinds and their material features and applications. Tabulation of the manufacturing technologies for fabric engineering and equipment, encompassing the latest fundamental and standard procedures.

Abstract
A comprehensive understanding of the complex physiological and pathological processes associated with alveolar bones, their responses to different therapeutics strategies, and cell interactions with biomaterial becomes necessary in precisely treating patients with severe progressive periodontitis, as a bone-related issue in dentistry. However, existing monolayer cell culture or pre-clinical models have been unable to mimic the complex physiological, pathological and regeneration processes in the bone microenvironment in response to different therapeutic strategies. In this point, 'organ-on-a-chip' (OOAC) technology, specifically 'alveolar-bone-on-a-chip', is expected to resolve the problems by better imitating infection site microenvironment and microphysiology within the oral tissues. The OOAC technology is assessed in this study toward better approaches in disease modeling and better therapeutics strategy for bone tissue engineering applied in dentistry.

Abstract
Extruded bioprinting is widely used for the biomanufacturing of personalized, complex tissue structures, which requires biomaterial inks with a certain viscosity to enable printing. However, there is still a lack of discussion on the controllable preparation and printability of biomaterial inks with different viscosities. In this paper, biomaterial inks composed of gelatin, sodium alginate, and methylcellulose were utablesed to investigate the feasibility of adjustment of rheological properties, thereby analyzing the effects of different rheological properties on the printing process. Based on the response surface methodology, the relationship between the material components and the rheological properties of biomaterial inks was discussed, followed by the prediction of the rheological properties of biomaterial inks. The prediction accuracies of the power-law index and consistency coefficient could reach 96% and 79%, respectively. The material group can be used to prepare biomaterial inks with different viscosity properties in a wide range. Latin hypercube sampling and computational fluid dynamics were used to analyze the effects of different rheological properties and extrusion pressure on the flow rate at the nozzle. The relationship between the rheological properties of the biomaterial ink and the flow rate was established, and the simulation results showed that the changes in the rheological properties of the biomaterial ink in the high-viscosity region resulted in slight fluctuations in the flow rate, implying that the printing process for high-viscosity biomaterial inks may have better versatility. In addition, based on the characteristics of biomaterial inks, the printing process was optimized from the planning of the print pattern to improve the location accuracy of the starting point, and the length accuracy of filaments can reach 99%. The effect of the overlap between the fill pattern and outer frame on the print quality was investigated to improve the surface quality of complex structures. Furthermore, low- and high-viscosity biomaterial inks were tested, and various printing protocols were discussed for improving printing efficiency or maintaining cell activity. This study provides feasible printing concepts for a wider range of biomaterials to meet the biological requirements of cell culture and tissue engineering.

Abstract
Recent advances in the three-dimensional (3D) cancer models give rise to a plethora of new possibilities in the development of anti-cancer drug therapies and bring us closer to personalized medicine. Three-dimensional models are undoubtedly more authentic than traditional two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures. Nowadays, they are becoming preferentially used in most cancer research fields due to their more accurate biomimetic characteristics. On the contrary, they still lack the cellular and matrix complexity of the native tumor microenvironment (TME). This review focuses on the description of existing 3D models, the incorporation of TME and fluidics into these models, and their perspective in the future research. It is clear that such an improvement would need not only biological but also technical progress. Therefore, the modern approach to anti-cancer drug discovery should involve various fields.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a class of promising techniques in biomedical research for a wide range of related applications. Specifically, stereolithography apparatus (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP)-based vat-polymerization techniques are highly effective methods of bioprinting, which can be used to produce high-resolution and architecturally sophisticated structures. Our review aims to provide an overview of SLA- and DLP-based 3D bioprinting strategies, starting from factors that affect these bioprinting processes. In addition, we summarize the advances in bioinks used in SLA and DLP, including naturally derived and synthetic bioinks. Finally, the biomedical applications of both SLA- and DLP-based bioprinting are discussed, primarily centered on regenerative medicine and tissue modeling engineering.

Abstract
This review presents bioprinting methods, biomaterials, and printing strategies that may be used for composite tissue constructs for musculoskeletal applications. The printing methods discussed include those that are suitable for acellular and cellular components, and the biomaterials include soft and rigid components that are suitable for soft and/or hard tissues. We also present strategies that focus on the integration of cell-laden soft and acellular rigid components under a single printing platform. Given the structural and functional complexity of native musculoskeletal tissue, we envision that hybrid bioprinting, referred to as hybprinting, could provide unprecedented potential by combining different materials and bioprinting techniques to engineer and assemble modular tissues.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) printing is well acknowledged to constitute an important technology in tissue engineering, largely due to the increasing global demand for organ replacement and tissue regeneration. In 3D bioprinting, which is a step ahead of 3D biomaterial printing, the ink employed is impregnated with cells, without compromising ink printability. This allows for immediate scaffold cellularization and generation of complex structures. The use of cell-laden inks or bio-inks provides the opportunity for enhanced cell differentiation for organ fabrication and regeneration. Recognizing the importance of such bio-inks, the current study comprehensively explores the state of the art of the utilization of bio-inks based on natural polymers (biopolymers), such as cellulose, agarose, alginate, decellularized matrix, in 3D bioprinting. Discussions regarding progress in bioprinting, techniques and approaches employed in the bioprinting of natural polymers, and limitations and prospects concerning future trends in human-scale tissue and organ fabrication are also presented.

Abstract
Healing of articular cartilage defects presents a challenging issue, due to its regenerative shortcomings. Lacking vascularity and innervation of cartilage and low proliferative potential of chondrocytes are the main reasons for the limited healing potential of articular cartilage. Traditional reparative approaches are limited in their efficiency, hence there is a demand for novel reparative treatments. Mesenchymal stromal cells, preferred for clinical uses, can be readily derived from various sources and have been proven to have a therapeutic effect on cartilage and subchondral bone. Therefore, mesenchymal stromal cells, their derivates, and scaffolds have been utilized in research targeting osteochondral regeneration. The present review aims to comprehensively outline and discuss literature considering this topic published within last 5 years.

Abstract
Bioprinting is a promising fabrication technique aimed at developing biologically functional, tissue-like constructs for various biomedical applications. Among the different bioprinting approaches, vat polymerization-based techniques offer the highest feature resolution compared to more commonly used extrusion-based methods and therefore have greater potential to be utilized for printing complex hierarchical tissue architectures. Although significant efforts have been directed toward harnessing digital light processing techniques for high-resolution bioprinting, the use of stereolithography (SLA) setups for producing distinct hydrogel filaments smaller than 20 μm has received less attention. Improving the bioprinting resolution is still a technical challenge that must consider both the practical limitations of the bioprinter apparatus and the formulation of the cytocompatible bioresin. In this study, we developed a novel bioresin compatible with SLA and capable of printing high-resolution features. This resin, composed of a biosynthetic polypeptide poly(l-glutamic acid) functionalized with tyramine moieties (PLGA-Tyr), was crosslinked using a visible-light photoinitiator system. Varying concentrations of PLGA-Tyr and the co-photoinitiator were evaluated for the hydrogel system's gelation ability, swelling characteristics, degradation profiles, mechanical properties, and cell viability post-encapsulation. This study introduces a custom-built, cost-effective, visible-light SLA bioprinting system named the "MicroNC". Using the newly developed visible-light bioresin, we demonstrated for the first time the ability to fabricate hydrogel scaffolds with well-resolved filaments (less than 8 μm in width) capable of supporting cell viability and proliferation and directing cellular morphology at the single-cell level for up to 14 days. Overall, these experiments have underscored the exciting potential of using the visible-light-photoinitiated PLGA-Tyr material system for developing physiologically relevant in vitro hydrogel scaffolds with feature resolutions comparable to the dimensions of individual human cells for a wide range of biomedical applications.

Abstract
Polymeric hydrogels are fascinating platforms as 3D scaffolds for tissue repair and delivery systems of therapeutic molecules and cells. Among others, methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) has become a representative hydrogel formulation, finding various biomedical applications. Recent efforts on GelMA-based hydrogels have been devoted to combining them with bioactive and functional nanomaterials, aiming to provide enhanced physicochemical and biological properties to GelMA. The benefits of this approach are multiple: i) reinforcing mechanical properties, ii) modulating viscoelastic property to allow 3D printability of bio-inks, iii) rendering electrical/magnetic property to produce electro-/magneto-active hydrogels for the repair of specific tissues (e.g., muscle, nerve), iv) providing stimuli-responsiveness to actively deliver therapeutic molecules, and v) endowing therapeutic capacity in tissue repair process (e.g., antioxidant effects). The nanomaterial-combined GelMA systems have shown significantly enhanced and extraordinary behaviors in various tissues (bone, skin, cardiac, and nerve) that are rarely observable with GelMA. Here we systematically review these recent efforts in nanomaterials-combined GelMA hydrogels that are considered as next-generation multifunctional platforms for tissue therapeutics. The approaches used in GelMA can also apply to other existing polymeric hydrogel systems.

Abstract
Bioprinting is a relatively new yet evolving technique predominantly used in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. 3D bioprinting techniques combine the advantages of creating Extracellular Matrix (ECM)like environments for cells and computer-aided tailoring of predetermined tissue shapes and structures. The essential application of bioprinting is for the regeneration or restoration of damaged and injured tissues by producing implantable tissues and organs. The capability of bioprinting is yet to be fully scrutinized in sectors like the patient-specific spatial distribution of cells, bio-robotics, etc. In this review, currently developed experimental systems and strategies for the bioprinting of different types of tissues as well as for drug delivery and cancer research are explored for potential applications. This review also digs into the most recent opportunities and future possibilities for the efficient implementation of bioprinting to restructure medical and technological practices.

Abstract
Three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology is an innovative tool used in manufacturing medical devices, producing alloys, replacing biological tissues, producing customized dosage forms and so on. Stereolithography (SLA), a 3D printing technique, is very rapid and highly accurate and produces finished products of uniform quality. 3D formulations have been optimized with a perfect tool of artificial intelligence learning techniques. Complex designs/shapes can be fabricated through SLA using the photopolymerization principle. Different 3DP technologies are introduced and the most promising of these, SLA, and its commercial applications, are focused on. The high speed and effectiveness of SLA are highlighted. The working principle of SLA, the materials used and applications of the technique in a wide range of different sectors are highlighted in this review. An innovative idea of 3D printing customized pharmaceutical dosage forms is also presented. SLA compromises several advantages over other methods, such as cost effectiveness, controlled integrity of materials and greater speed. The development of SLA has allowed the development of printed pharmaceutical devices. Considering the present trends, it is expected that SLA will be used along with conventional methods of manufacturing of 3D model. This 3D printing technology may be utilized as a novel tool for delivering drugs on demand. This review will be useful for researchers working on 3D printing technologies.

Abstract
In the last decades, biomedical research has significantly boomed in the academia and industrial sectors, and it is expected to continue to grow at a rapid pace in the future. An in-depth analysis of such growth is not trivial, given the intrinsic multidisciplinary nature of biomedical research. Nevertheless, technological advances are among the main factors which have enabled such progress. In this review, we discuss the contribution of two state-of-the-art technologies-namely biofabrication and organ-on-a-chip-in a selection of biomedical research areas. We start by providing an overview of these technologies and their capacities in fabricating advanced in vitro tissue/organ models. We then analyze their impact on addressing a range of current biomedical challenges. Ultimately, we speculate about their future developments by integrating these technologies with other cutting-edge research fields such as artificial intelligence and big data analysis.

Abstract
As a technique of producing fabric engineering scaffolds, three-dimensional (3D) printing has tremendous possibilities. 3D printing applications are restricted to a wide range of biomaterials in the field of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Due to their biocompatibility, bioactiveness, and biodegradability, biopolymers such as collagen, alginate, silk fibroin, chitosan, alginate, cellulose, and starch are used in a variety of fields, including the food, biomedical, regeneration, agriculture, packaging, and pharmaceutical industries. The benefits of producing 3D-printed scaffolds are many, including the capacity to produce complicated geometries, porosity, and multicell coculture and to take growth factors into account. In particular, the additional production of biopolymers offers new options to produce 3D structures and materials with specialised patterns and properties. In the realm of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM), important progress has been accomplished; now, several state-of-the-art techniques are used to produce porous scaffolds for organ or tissue regeneration to be suited for tissue technology. Natural biopolymeric materials are often better suited for designing and manufacturing healing equipment than temporary implants and tissue regeneration materials owing to its appropriate properties and biocompatibility. The review focuses on the additive manufacturing of biopolymers with significant changes, advancements, trends, and developments in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering with potential applications.

Abstract
Drug and chemical development along with safety tests rely on the use of numerous clinical models. This is a lengthy process where animal testing is used as a standard for pre-clinical trials. However, these models often fail to represent human physiopathology. This may lead to poor correlation with results from later human clinical trials. Organ-on-a-Chip (OOAC) systems are engineered microfluidic systems, which recapitulate the physiochemical environment of a specific organ by emulating the perfusion and shear stress cellular tissue undergoes in vivo and could replace current animal models. The success of culturing cells and cell-derived tissues within these systems is dependent on the scaffold chosen; hence, scaffolds are critical for the success of OOACs in research. A literature review was conducted looking at current OOAC systems to assess the advantages and disadvantages of different materials and manufacturing techniques used for scaffold production; and the alternatives that could be tailored from the macro tissue engineering research field.

Abstract
Hydrogels are soft, water-based polymer gels that are increasingly used to fabricate free-standing fluidic devices for tissue and biological engineering applications. For many of these applications, pressurized liquid must be driven through the hydrogel device. To couple pressurized liquid to a hydrogel device, a common approach is to insert tubing into a hole in the gel; however, this usually results in leakage and expulsion of the tubing, and other options for coupling pressurized liquid to hydrogels remain limited. Here, we describe a simple coupling approach where microfluidic tubing is inserted into a plastic, 3D-printed bulb-shaped connector, which "pops" into a 3D-printed socket in the gel. By systematically varying the dimensions of the connector relative to those of the socket entrance, we find an optimal head-socket ratio that provides maximum resistance to leakage and expulsion. The resulting connection can withstand liquid pressures on the order of several kilopascals, three orders of magnitude greater than traditional, connector-free approaches. We also show that two-sided connectors can be used to link multiple hydrogels to one another to build complex, reconfigurable hydrogel systems from modular components. We demonstrate the potential usefulness of these connectors by established long-term nutrient flow through a 3D-printed hydrogel device containing bacteria. The simple coupling approach outlined here will enable a variety of applications in hydrogel fluidics.

Abstract
The development of large-scale human liver scaffolds equipped with interconnected flow channels in three-dimensional space offers a promising strategy for the advancement of liver tissue engineering. Tissue-engineered scaffold must be blood-compatible to address the demand for clinical transplantable liver tissue. Here, we demonstrate the construction of 3-D macro scaffold with interconnected flow channels using the selective laser sintering (SLS) fabrication method. The accuracy of the printed flow channels was ensured by the incorporation of polyglycolic acid (PGA) microparticles as porogens over the conventional method of NaCl salt leaching. The fabricated scaffold was populated with Hep G2, followed by endothelization with endothelial cells (ECs) grown under perfusion of culture medium for up to 10 days. The EC covered scaffold was perfused with platelet-rich plasma for the assessment of hemocompatibility to examine its antiplatelet adhesion properties. Both Hep G2-covered scaffolds exhibited a markedly different albumin production, glucose metabolism and lactate production when compared to EC-Hep G2-covered scaffold. Most importantly, EC-Hep G2-covered scaffold retained the antiplatelet adhesion property associated with the perfusion of platelet-rich plasma through the construct. These results show the potential of fabricating a 3-D scaffold with interconnected flow channels, enabling the perfusion of whole blood and circumventing the limitation of blood compatibility for engineering transplantable liver tissue.

Abstract
Cardiac tissue engineering is very much in a current focus of regenerative medicine research as it represents a promising strategy for cardiac disease modelling, cardiotoxicity testing and cardiovascular repair. Advances in this field over the last two decades have enabled the generation of human engineered cardiac tissue constructs with progressively increased functional capabilities. However, reproducing tissue-like properties is still a pending issue, as constructs generated to date remain immature relative to native adult heart. Moreover, there is a high degree of heterogeneity in the methodologies used to assess the functionality and cardiac maturation state of engineered cardiac tissue constructs, which further complicates the comparison of constructs generated in different ways. Here, we present an overview of the general approaches developed to generate functional cardiac tissues, discussing the different cell sources, biomaterials, and types of engineering strategies utilized to date. Moreover, we discuss the main functional assays used to evaluate the cardiac maturation state of the constructs, both at the cellular and the tissue levels. We trust that researchers interested in developing engineered cardiac tissue constructs will find the information reviewed here useful. Furthermore, we believe that providing a unified framework for comparison will further the development of human engineered cardiac tissue constructs displaying the specific properties best suited for each particular application.

Abstract
Over the past decade, 3D bioprinting technology has progressed tremendously in the field of tissue engineering in its ability to fabricate individualized biological constructs with precise geometric designability, which offers us the capability to bridge the divergence between engineered tissue constructs and natural tissues. In this work, we first review the current widely used 3D bioprinting approaches, cells, and materials. Next, the updated applications of this technique in tissue engineering, including bone tissue, cartilage tissue, vascular grafts, skin, neural tissue, heart tissue, liver tissue and lung tissue, are briefly introduced. Then, the prominent advantages of 3D bioprinting in tissue engineering are summarized in detail: rapidly prototyping the customized structure, delivering cell-laden materials with high precision in space, and engineering with a highly controllable microenvironment. The current technical deficiencies of 3D bioprinted constructs in terms of mechanical properties and cell behaviors are afterward illustrated, as well as corresponding improvements. Finally, we conclude with future perspectives about 3D bioprinting in tissue engineering.

Abstract
Skin and skin appendages are vulnerable to injury, requiring rapidly reliable regeneration methods. In recent years, 3D bioprinting has shown potential for wound repair and regeneration. 3D bioprinting can be customized for skin shape with cells and other materials distributed precisely, achieving rapid and reliable production of bionic skin substitutes, therefore, meeting clinical and industrial requirements. Additionally, it has excellent performance with high resolution, flexibility, reproducibility, and high throughput, showing great potential for the fabrication of tissue-engineered skin. This review introduces the common techniques of 3D bioprinting and their application in skin tissue engineering, focusing on the latest research progress in skin appendages (hair follicles and sweat glands) and vascularization, and summarizes current challenges and future development of 3D skin printing.

Abstract
One of the most common types of 3D printing technologies is inkjet printing due to its numerous advantages, including low cost, programmability, high resolution, throughput, and speed. Inkjet printers are also capable of fabricating artificial tissues with physiological characteristics similar to those of living tissues. These artificial tissues are used for disease modeling, drug discovery, drug screening, and replacements for diseased or damaged tissues. This paper reviews recent advancements in one of the most common 3D printing technologies, inkjet dispensing. We briefly consider common printing techniques, including fused deposition modeling (FDM), stereolithography (STL), and inkjet printing. We briefly discuss various steps in inkjet printing, including droplet generation, droplet ejection, interaction of droplets on substrates, drying, and solidification. We also discuss various parameters that affect the printing process, including ink properties (e.g., viscosity and surface tension), physical parameters (e.g., internal diameter of printheads), and actuation mechanisms (e.g., piezoelectric actuation and thermal actuation). Through better understanding of common 3D printing technologies and the parameters that influence the printing processes, new types of artificial tissues, disease models, and structures for drug discovery and drug screening may be prepared. This review considers future directions in inkjet printing research that are focused on enhancing the resolution, printability, and uniformity of printed structures.

Abstract
There is a rising demand for replacement, regeneration of tissues and organ repairs for patients who suffer from diseased/damaged bones or tissues such as hip pains. The hip replacement treatment relies on the implant, which may not always meet the requirements due to mechanical and biocompatibility issues which in turn may aggravate the pain. To surpass these limitations, researchers are investigating the use of scaffolds as another approach for implants. Three-dimensional (3D) printing offers significant potential as an efficient fabrication technique on personalized organs as it is capable of biomimicking the intricate designs found in nature. In this review, the determining factors for hip replacement and the different fabrication techniques such as direct 3D printing, Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and stereolithography (SLA) for hip replacement. The study also covers surface modifications of 3D printed implants and provides an overview on 3D tissue regeneration. To appreciate the current conventional hip replacement practices, the conventional metallic and ceramic materials are covered, highlighting their rationale as the material of choice. Next, the challenges, ethics and trends in the implants' 3D printing are covered and conclusions drawn. The outlook and challenges are also presented here. The knowledge from this review indicates that 3D printing has enormous potential for providing a pathway for a sustainable hip replacement.

Abstract
Bioprinting techniques have been flourishing in the field of biofabrication with pronounced and exponential developments in the past years. Novel biomaterial inks used for the formation of bioinks have been developed, allowing the manufacturing of in vitro models and implants tested preclinically with a certain degree of success. Furthermore, incredible advances in cell biology, namely, in pluripotent stem cells, have also contributed to the latest milestones where more relevant tissues or organ-like constructs with a certain degree of functionality can already be obtained. These incredible strides have been possible with a multitude of multidisciplinary teams around the world, working to make bioprinted tissues and organs more relevant and functional. Yet, there is still a long way to go until these biofabricated constructs will be able to reach the clinics. In this review, we summarize the main bioprinting activities linking them to tissue and organ development and physiology. Most bioprinting approaches focus on mimicking fully matured tissues. Future bioprinting strategies might pursue earlier developmental stages of tissues and organs. The continuous convergence of the experts in the fields of material sciences, cell biology, engineering, and many other disciplines will gradually allow us to overcome the barriers identified on the demanding path toward manufacturing and adoption of tissue and organ replacements.

Abstract
Since the advent of additive manufacturing, known commonly as 3D printing, this technology has revolutionized the biofabrication landscape and driven numerous pivotal advancements in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Many 3D printing methods were developed in short course after Charles Hull first introduced the power of stereolithography to the world. However, materials development was not met with the same enthusiasm and remained the bottleneck in the field for some time. Only in the past decade has there been deliberate development to expand the materials toolbox for 3D printing applications to meet the true potential of 3D printing technologies. Herein, we review the development of biomaterials suited for light-based 3D printing modalities with an emphasis on bioprinting applications. We discuss the chemical mechanisms that govern photopolymerization and highlight the application of natural, synthetic, and composite biomaterials as 3D printed hydrogels. Because the quality of a 3D printed construct is highly dependent on both the material properties and processing technique, we included a final section on the theoretical and practical aspects behind light-based 3D printing as well as ways to employ that knowledge to troubleshoot and standardize the optimization of printing parameters.

Abstract
The basic concepts from the fields of biology and engineering are integrated into tissue engineering to develop constructs for the repair of damaged and/or absent tissues, respectively. The field has grown substantially over the past two decades, with particular interest in bone tissue engineering (BTE). Clinically, there are circumstances in which the quantity of bone that is necessary to restore form and function either exceeds the patient's healing capacity or bone's intrinsic regenerative capabilities. Vascularized osseous or osteocutaneous free flaps are the standard of care with autologous bone remaining the gold standard, but is commonly associated with donor site morbidity, graft resorption, increased operating time, and cost. Regardless of the size of a craniofacial defect, from trauma, pathology, and osteonecrosis, surgeons and engineers involved with reconstruction need to consider the complex three-dimensional (3D) geometry of the defect and its relationship to local structures. Three-dimensional printing has garnered significant attention and presents opportunities to use craniofacial BTE as a technology that offers a personalized approach to bony reconstruction. Clinicians and engineers are able to work together to produce patient-specific space-maintaining scaffolds tailored to site-specific defects, which are osteogenic, osseoconductive, osseoinductive, encourage angiogenesis/vasculogenesis, and mechanically stable upon implantation to prevent immediate failure. In this work, we review biological and engineering principles important in applying 3D printing technology to BTE for craniofacial reconstruction as well as present recent translational advancements in 3D printed bioactive ceramic scaffold technology.

Abstract
Gelatin and transglutaminase (TG) ink is increasingly popular in direct ink writing three-dimensional (3D) printing of cellular scaffolds and edible materials. The use of enzymes to crosslink gelatin chains removes the needs for toxic crosslinkers and bypasses undesired side reactions due to the specificity of the enzymes. However, their application in 3D printing remains challenging primarily due to the rapid crosslinking that leads to the short duration of printable time. In this work, we propose the use of gelatin preheated for 7 days to extend the duration of the printing time of the gelatin ink. We first determined the stiffness of freshly prepared gelatin (FG) and preheated gelatin (PG) (5 – 20% w/w) containing 5% w/w TG. We selected gelatin hydrogels made from 7.5% w/w FG and 10% w/w PG that yielded similar stiffness for subsequent studies to determine the duration of the printable time. PG inks exhibited longer time required for gelation and a smaller increase in viscosity with time than FG inks of similar stiffness. Our study suggested the advantage to preheat gelatin to enhance the printability of the ink, which is essential for extrusion-based bioprinting and food printing.

Abstract
Stereolithography (SLA)-based 3D printing has proven to have several advantages over traditional fabrication techniques as it allows for the control of hydrogel synthesis at a very high resolution, making possible the creation of tissue-engineered devices with microarchitecture similar to the tissues they are replacing. Much of the previous work in hydrogels for tissue engineering applications have utilised the ultraviolet (UV) chamber bulk photopolymerisation method for preparing test specimens. Therefore, it is essential to directly compare SLA 3D printing to this more traditional approach to elucidate the differences in hydrogels prepared by each fabrication method. Polyethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) is an ideally suited material for a comparative study of the impact that SLA fabrication has on performance, as the properties of traditional UV chamber-cured hydrogels have been extensively characterised. The present study was conducted to compare the material properties of PEGDMA hydrogels prepared using UV chamber photopolymerisation and SLA 3D printing. From the subsequent testing, SLA-fabricated hydrogels were shown to maintain similar thermal and chemical performance to UV chamber-cured hydrogels but had a higher compressive strength and tensile stiffness, as well as increased hydrophilicity. These differences are attributed to the increased exposure to UV light SLA samples received compared to traditionally UV chamber-cured samples.

Abstract
Advances in biomaterials and the need for patient-specific bone scaffolds require modern manufacturing approaches in addition to a design strategy. Hybrid materials such as those with functionally graded properties are highly needed in tissue replacement and repair. However, their constituents, proportions, sizes, configurations and their connection to each other are a challenge to manufacturing. On the other hand, various bone defect sizes and sites require a cost-effective readily adaptive manufacturing technique to provide components (scaffolds) matching with the anatomical shape of the bone defect. Additive manufacturing or three-dimensional (3D) printing is capable of fabricating functional physical components with or without porosity by depositing the materials layer-by-layer using 3D computer models. Therefore, it facilitates the production of advanced bone scaffolds with the feasibility of making changes to the model. This review paper first discusses the development of a computer-aided-design (CAD) approach for the manufacture of bone scaffolds, from the anatomical data acquisition to the final model. It also provides information on the optimization of scaffold's internal architecture, advanced materials, and process parameters to achieve the best biomimetic performance. Furthermore, the review paper describes the advantages and limitations of 3D printing technologies applied to the production of bone tissue scaffolds.

Abstract
Biomanufacturing of tissues/organs in vitro is our big dream, driven by two needs: organ transplantation and accurate tissue models. Over the last decades, 3D bioprinting has been widely applied in the construction of many tissues/organs such as skins, vessels, hearts, etc., which can not only lay a foundation for the grand goal of organ replacement, but also be served as in vitro models committed to pharmacokinetics, drug screening and so on. As organs are so complicated, many bioprinting methods are exploited to figure out the challenges of different applications. So the question is how to choose the suitable bioprinting method? Herein, we systematically review the evolution, process and classification of 3D bioprinting with an emphasis on the fundamental printing principles and commercialized bioprinters. We summarize and classify extrusion-based, droplet-based, and photocuring-based bioprinting methods and give some advices for applications. Among them, coaxial and multi-material bioprinting are highlighted and basic principles of designing bioinks are also discussed.

Abstract
The development of bioinks for bioprinting of cell-laden constructs remains a challenge for tissue engineering, despite vigorous investigation. Hydrogels to be used as bioinks must fulfill a demanding list of requirements, mainly focused around printability and cell function. Recent advances in the use of supramolecular and dynamic covalent chemistry (DCvC) provide paths forward to develop bioinks. These dynamic hydrogels enable tailorability, higher printing performance, and the creation of more life-like environments for ultimate tissue maturation. This review focuses on the exploration and benefits of dynamically cross-linked bioinks for bioprinting, highlighting recent advances, benefits, and challenges in this emerging area. By incorporating internal dynamics, many benefits can be imparted to the material, providing design elements for next generation bioinks.

Abstract
Until recently, bioprinting was largely limited to highly interdisciplinary research teams, as the process requires significant input from specialists in the fields of materials science, engineering, and cell biology. With the advent of commercially available high-performance bioprinters, the field has become accessible to a wider range of research groups, who can now buy the hardware off the shelf instead of having to build it from scratch. As a result, bioprinting has rapidly expanded to address a wide array of research foci, which include organotypic in vitro models, complex engineered tissues, and even bioprinted microbial systems. Moreover, in the early days, the range of suitable bioinks was limited. Now, there is a plethora of viable options to suit many cell phenotypes. This rapidly evolving dynamic environment creates endless opportunities for scientists to design and construct highly complex biological systems. However, this scientific diversity presents its own set of challenges, such as defining standardized protocols for characterizing bioprinted structures, which is essential for eventual organ replacement. In this progress report, the current state-of-the-art in the field of bioprinting is discussed, with a special emphasis on recent hardware developments, bioprinting for regenerative medicine, and late-breaking nontraditional topics.

Abstract
Next generation engineered tissue constructs with complex and ordered architectures aim to better mimic the native tissue structures, largely due to advances in three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting techniques. Extrusion bioprinting has drawn tremendous attention due to its widespread availability, cost-effectiveness, simplicity, and its facile and rapid processing. However, poor printing resolution and low speed have limited its fidelity and clinical implementation. To circumvent the downsides associated with extrusion printing, microfluidic technologies are increasingly being implemented in 3D bioprinting for engineering living constructs. These technologies enable biofabrication of heterogeneous biomimetic structures made of different types of cells, biomaterials, and biomolecules. Microfluiding bioprinting technology enables highly controlled fabrication of 3D constructs in high resolutions and it has been shown to be useful for building tubular structures and vascularized constructs, which may promote the survival and integration of implanted engineered tissues. Although this field is currently in its early development and the number of bioprinted implants is limited, it is envisioned that it will have a major impact on the production of customized clinical-grade tissue constructs. Further studies are, however, needed to fully demonstrate the effectiveness of the technology in the lab and its translation to the clinic.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that has not yet been treated successfully. In the United States, almost 450,000 people suffer from SCI. Despite the development of many clinical treatments, therapeutics are still at an early stage for a successful bridging of damaged nerve spaces and complete recovery of nerve functions. Biomimetic 3D scaffolds have been an effective option in repairing the damaged nervous system. 3D scaffolds allow improved host tissue engraftment and new tissue development by supplying physical support to ease cell function. Recently, 3D bioprinting techniques that may easily regulate the dimension and shape of the 3D tissue scaffold and are capable of producing scaffolds with cells have attracted attention. Production of biologically more complex microstructures can be achieved by using 3D bioprinting technology. Particularly in vitro modeling of CNS tissues for in vivo transplantation is critical in the treatment of SCI. Considering the potential impact of 3D bioprinting technology on neural studies, this review focus on 3D bioprinting methods, bio-inks, and cells widely used in neural tissue engineering and the latest technological applications of bioprinting of nerve tissues for the repair of SCI are discussed.

Abstract
One of the goals of biomaterials science is to reverse engineer aspects of human and nonhuman physiology. Similar to the body's regulatory mechanisms, such devices must transduce changes in the physiological environment or the presence of an external stimulus into a detectable or therapeutic response. This review is a comprehensive evaluation and critical analysis of the design and fabrication of environmentally responsive cell-material constructs for bioinspired machinery and biomimetic devices. In a bottom-up analysis, we begin by reviewing fundamental principles that explain materials' responses to chemical gradients, biomarkers, electromagnetic fields, light, and temperature. Strategies for fabricating highly ordered assemblies of material components at the nano to macro-scales via directed assembly, lithography, 3D printing and 4D printing are also presented. We conclude with an account of contemporary material-tissue interfaces within bioinspired and biomimetic devices for peptide delivery, cancer theranostics, biomonitoring, neuroprosthetics, soft robotics, and biological machines.

Abstract
The scaffold is one of the most important components in tissue engineering. There are a lot of natural or synthetic materials applied for the fabrication of scaffolds. Among them, cellulose nanofibril (CNF) is an important natural polymer with characteristics of superior biocompatibility, notable nanostructure effect and excellent hydrophilia, which make it qualified for serving as a raw material of scaffolds. In this paper, polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) was mixed with CNF at different content ratios, which were 0%, 0.35%, 0.7%, 1.05% and 1.4% (m/v). Furthermore, the visible light photoinitiator (eosin Y + TEA + NVP) was first added to this mixture solution to form a new kind of bio-resin. A two-step method including stereolithography and freeze-drying is put forward to fabricate a new aerogel-wet hydrogel scaffold. Scaffolds were fabricated by using a self-built stereolithography platform and the mechanical properties, printability and biocompatibility of the hydrogel scaffolds were investigated thoroughly. The original hydrogel scaffold was fabricated through stereolithography, where CNFs were applied to regulate the mechanical properties of the hydrogel and the printability of the bio-resin. After the freeze-drying process, the original hydrogel was transformed into the aerogel-wet hydrogel whose compressive modulus is reduced by 20%. Furthermore, the surface structure of the hydrogel scaffold is modified to provide a better environment for adhesion and growth of BMSc.

Abstract
Impaired or damaged blood vessels can occur at all levels in the hierarchy of vascular systems from large vasculatures such as arteries and veins to meso- and microvasculatures such as arterioles, venules, and capillary networks. Vascular tissue engineering has become a promising approach for fabricating small-diameter vascular grafts for occlusive arteries. Vascularized tissue engineering aims to fabricate meso- and microvasculatures for the prevascularization of engineered tissues and organs. The ideal small-diameter vascular graft is biocompatible, bridgeable, and mechanically robust to maintain patency while promoting tissue remodeling. The desirable fabricated meso- and microvasculatures should rapidly integrate with the host blood vessels and allow nutrient and waste exchange throughout the construct after implantation. A number of techniques used, including engineering-based and cell-based approaches, to fabricate these synthetic vasculatures are herein explored, as well as the techniques developed to fabricate hierarchical structures that comprise multiple levels of vasculature.

Abstract
Poly(propylene fumarate) (PPF) is a biodegradable polymer that has been investigated extensively over the last three decades. It has led many scientists to synthesize and fabricate a variety of PPF-based materials for biomedical applications due to its controllable mechanical properties, tunable degradation and biocompatibility. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the progress made in improving PPF synthesis, resin formulation, crosslinking, device fabrication and post polymerization modification. Further, we highlight the influence of these parameters on biodegradation, biocompatibility, and their use in a number of regenerative medicine applications, especially bone tissue engineering. In particular, the use of 3D printing techniques for the fabrication of PPF-based scaffolds is extensively reviewed. The recent invention of a ring-opening polymerization method affords precise control of PPF molecular mass, molecular mass distribution (ƉM) and viscosity. Low ƉM facilitates time-certain resorption of 3D printed structures. Novel post-polymerization and post-printing functionalization methods have accelerated the expansion of biomedical applications that utilize PPF-based materials. Finally, we shed light on evolving uses of PPF-based materials for orthopedics/bone tissue engineering and other biomedical applications, including its use as a hydrogel for bioprinting.

Abstract
The osteochondral tissue is an interface between two distinct tissues: articular cartilage and bone. These two tissues are significantly diverse with regard to their chemical compositions, mechanical properties, structure, electrical properties, and the amount of nutrient and oxygen consumption. Thus, transition from the surface of the articular cartilage to the subchondral bone needs to face several smooth gradients. These gradients are imperative to study to generate a scaffold suitable for the reconstruction of the cartilaginous and osseous layers of a defected osteochondral tissue, simultaneously. The aim of this review is to peruse the alternation of biochemical, biomechanical, structural, electrical, and metabolic properties of the osteochondral tissue moving from the surface of the articular cartilage to the subchondral bone. Moreover, this review also discusses currently developed approaches and ideal techniques with a focus on gradients present in the interface of the cartilage and bone. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The submitted review paper entitled as "Engineering of the gradient osteochondral tissue: from nature to lab" is a complete review with regard to the osteochondral tissue and transition of different properties between the cartilage and bone tissues. Moreover, previous studies on the osteochondral tissue engineering have been reviewed in this paper. This complete information can be a valuable and useful source for current and future researchers and scientists. Considering the scope of the submitted paper, Acta Biomaterialia would be a suitable journal for publishing this article.

Abstract
This article reviews the current state of the art of additive manufacturing techniques for the production of bone tissue engineering (BTE) scaffolds. The most well-known of these techniques include: stereolithography, selective laser sintering, fused deposition modelling and three-dimensional printing. This review analyses in detail the basic physical principles and main applications of these techniques and presents a list of biomaterials for BTE applications, including commercial trademarks. It also describes and compares the main advantages and disadvantages and explains the highlights of each additive manufacturing technique and their evolution. Finally, is discusses both their capabilities and limitations and proposes potential strategies to improve this field.
