Abstract
PURPOSE Examine trends in noncigarette tobacco use among smoking susceptible and nonsusceptible adolescents from 2009-2021. METHODS Data came from cross-sectional samples of the National Youth Tobacco Survey (N = 183,198). Using Pierce's smoking susceptibility scale, participants were classified as either susceptible or nonsusceptible to cigarette smoking. Their use of noncigarette tobacco products was classified into four mutually exclusive categories: nonuse, noncigarette combustibles use, noncombustibles use, and noncigarette combustibles and noncombustibles dual use. We produced covariate-adjusted predicted marginal proportions of noncigarette tobacco use for 12 National Youth Tobacco Survey years, which were entered into Joinpoint trend analysis software to determine (a) trends in noncigarette tobacco use from 2009-2021 using the average annual percent changes (AAPCs) and (b) changes in each time segment using the average percent change. Models were fitted by smoking susceptibility, sex, and race/ethnicity. RESULTS Nonuse was lower among susceptible (vs. nonsusceptible) adolescents whereas noncigarette tobacco use was higher. Trends show significant declines in nonuse (nonsusceptible: AAPC = -0.3%) and noncigarette combustibles use (susceptible: AAPC = -12%) between 2009-2021, increases in noncombustibles use (susceptible: AAPC = 18%, nonsusceptible: AAPC = 19%) between 2009 and 2019, and steadiness in dual use. Parallel trends were observed when stratified by sex and race/ethnicity with notable increases in noncombustibles use among females and Latinos. DISCUSSION Noncigarette tobacco use differed by smoking susceptibility. Observed trends, especially when stratified by sex and race/ethnicity, raise concerns about tobacco use disparities among females and Latinos. Smoking susceptibility can help identify at-risk adolescents for current or future tobacco use.

Abstract
Nicotine vaping products (NVPs) pose health risks associated with nicotine dependence and increased likelihood of tobacco consumption. Despite having a secondary role in smoking cessation, recreational NVP use is increasing among younger people. Vaping prevention campaigns aim to influence views on the health risks of vaping. This study examined perceptions of Australian and international vaping prevention campaigns among 27 young South Australians aged 16-26 years who do and do not use NVPs, to inform targeting and framing of vaping risk messaging. Participants viewed example materials from three vaping prevention campaigns: 'Epidemic', 'Do you know what you're vaping' and 'Unveil what you inhale'. Focus groups and interviews assessed whether materials were easily understood, appropriate, relevant, credible and effective in health communication. Participants indicated that all campaigns would influence their thoughts and actions related to vaping. The 'Do you know what you're vaping' campaign prompted thoughts about uncertainty about individual health risks, though participants did not indicate that this was enough to motivate vaping cessation. Participants considered the 'Unveil' campaign effective, with those who did not vape indicating they would click through to access resources, and those who did vape responding well to the 'challenge' aspect of the messaging. The 'Epidemic' campaign fear appeal did not clearly prompt change in vaping views or behaviours. Campaigns using a challenge approach may generate conversation about vaping harms, while fear appeals can be dismissed by younger audiences. Evidence-based short messages and the presentation of multiple versions of content were considered effective approaches.

Abstract
While the impact of combustible cigarette smoking on cardiovascular disease (CVD) is well-established, the longitudinal association of non-traditional tobacco products with subclinical and clinical CVD has not been fully explored due to: 1) limited data availability; and 2) the lack of well-phenotyped prospective cohorts. Therefore, there is the need for sufficiently powered well-phenotyped datasets to fully elucidate the CVD risks associated with non-cigarette tobacco products. The Cross-Cohort Collaboration (CCC)-Tobacco is a harmonized dataset of 23 prospective cohort studies predominantly in the US. A priori defined variables collected from each cohort included baseline characteristics, details of traditional and non-traditional tobacco product use, inflammatory markers, and outcomes including subclinical and clinical CVD. The definitions of the variables in each cohort were systematically evaluated by a team of two physician-scientists and a biostatistician. Herein, we describe the method of data acquisition and harmonization and the baseline sociodemographic and risk profile of participants in the combined CCC-Tobacco dataset. The total number of participants in the pooled cohort is 322782 (mean age: 59.7 ± 11.8 years) of which 76% are women. White individuals make up the majority (73.1%), although there is good representation of other race and ethnicity groups including African American (15.6%) and Hispanic/Latino individuals (6.4%). The prevalence of participants who never smoked, formerly smoked, and currently smoke combustible cigarettes is 50%, 36%, and 14%, respectively. The prevalence of current and former cigar, pipe, and smokeless tobacco is 7.3%, 6.4%, and 8.6%, respectively. E-cigarette use was measured only in follow-up visits of select studies, totaling 1704 former and current users. CCC-Tobacco is a large, pooled cohort dataset that is uniquely designed with increased power to expand knowledge regarding the association of traditional and non-traditional tobacco use with subclinical and clinical CVD, with extension to understudied groups including women and individuals from underrepresented racial-ethnic groups.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nicotine pouches are small, permeable pouches containing nicotine. The nicotine may either be derived from tobacco plants or synthetically produced. Nicotine pouches are available worldwide, but little is known as to how various countries regulate these products. This study summarises nicotine pouch regulatory policies across 67 countries. METHODS This research summarises insights obtained through active policy surveillance work in which we requested information on the availability of nicotine pouches and applicable policies and analysed responses from representatives of 67 countries (representatives included subject matter experts in government or civil society organisations). These countries span all WHO regions. RESULTS We found significant variation in how countries classify nicotine pouches, with many countries' current regulatory approach failing to regulate nicotine pouches that used synthetic nicotine. We found 34 countries regulate nicotine pouches with 23 of these countries' policies encompassing synthetic nicotine. Countries regulating both synthetic and tobacco-derived nicotine pouches generally (1) rely on existing policies for tobacco products and/or medicines or (2) have developed new policies or regulatory classifications that specify nicotine as the substance at issue rather than linking policies solely to tobacco. CONCLUSION Our work offers novel insight into nicotine pouch markets and national regulatory approaches. Policy approaches vary from not regulating nicotine pouches at all to banning both forms of nicotine pouches. Policies used by countries regulating both tobacco-derived and synthetic nicotine pouches offer a roadmap for how other jurisdictions can add effective guardrails to the use of these and other non-medicinal nicotine products.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents who dual use ENDS with tobacco cigarettes are more likely to have an increased risk of developing dependence. Yet, little is understood about the factors driving dual use among adolescents. The current study sought to reveal the day-to-day socio-temporal contextual and community factors associated with adolescents' use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), and how these factors predict dual use with tobacco cigarettes. METHODS We collected ecological momentary assessments (EMA) from a sample of 50 adolescent past two-week vapers (ages 14-17 years old) over 14 days. Daily EMA data were collected on ENDS and tobacco cigarette use, as well as a range of contextual (i.e., motivations to vape, location of vaping, who with when vaping) and community factors (i.e., exposure to peers vaping, to adults vaping, to ENDS advertising, to ENDS warning messages). Our primary analyses were multilevel regressions, accounting for daily observations nested within individuals (N = 700 observations). RESULTS Participants used ENDS exclusively on 44% of days and dual used ENDS and tobacco cigarettes on 8% of the days. Dual use days (versus exclusive ENDS use days) were associated with "vaping because tobacco use was prohibited" (OR = 34.65, p < .05). Also, dual use days (versus no use days) were associated with greater exposure to adults vaping (OR = 5.59, p < .05), peers vaping (OR = 7.48, p < .05), and (c) ENDS advertisements or promotions (OR = 2.12, p < .01), whereas exclusive use days (versus no use days) were only associated with greater exposure to peers vaping (OR = 2.58, p < .01). CONCLUSIONS Results showed that exposure to peers and adults vaping and exposure to ENDS marketing were associated with same day dual use behaviors. And, that adolescents who dual used were motivated to use ENDS because they were easy to conceal. Findings support stricter regulation of ENDS marketing and for smoke-free air laws that include ENDS. In addition, these findings support prioritizing family- and school-based prevention programming that effectively communicates risk associated with ENDS use, including heightened risk of dual use and dependence. Such efforts can reduce the number of adolescents who use ENDS as well as the number who transition to tobacco cigarette use.

Abstract
Over the past six decades, the United States has significantly improved tobacco-related health outcomes through mass efforts in policies, research, and behavioral and clinical interventions. Disparities persist, however, among communities of color who continue to suffer disproportionate rates of cardiovascular disease and other tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. In this review, we synthesize and discuss the tobacco use lifecycle across the lifespan, with special attention paid to socioecological determinants of tobacco-use behavior among Blacks and Latinos. This review summarizes the permeability of tobacco use and tobacco-related determinants across multiple levels of influence, from the individual to the societal, and highlights gaps in the tobacco control and prevention landscape. Given its continued evolution and impact on socially disadvantaged communities, we conclude with recommendations for improving current tobacco research and treatment and prevention efforts.

Abstract
PURPOSE The tobacco and nicotine market is diversifying. Implications for public health will depend on trends in use, including overall use, and who is using these products. This study examined differences over time (2017-2019), across countries (Canada, England, the United States (US)), and by smoking and vaping, in use of other tobacco/nicotine products and overall use. METHODS The study includes online repeat cross-sectional surveys of youth aged 16-19 years in Canada (N = 11,714), England (N = 11,170), US (N = 11,838) in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Past 30-day use of tobacco/nicotine products (any, cigarette, e-cigarette, other combusted [cigars/cigarillos/waterpipe], other non-combusted [smokeless tobacco/nicotine replacement therapies) were examined by country, year, and, for other combusted and non-combusted products, past 30-day cigarette smoking and vaping. Use of emerging products (IQOS, nicotine pouches) was explored in 2018-2019. RESULTS From 2017 to 2019, use of any product increased in Canada (17.1%-23.2%, AOR = 1.07 [95% CI = 1.04-1.09]) and the US (18.0%-24.0%, AOR = 1.06 [1.04-1.09]) but not England (20.8%-21.7%, AOR = 1.01 [.99-1.03]). Use of other combusted products (cigars/cigarillos/waterpipe) showed little change (Canada: 8.1%-7.8%; England: 6.3%-7.3%; US: 8.6%-8.5%; p ≥ .151). Use of other non-combusted products (smokeless/nicotine replacement therapies) increased in all countries (Canada: 1.5%-3.2%, AOR = 1.02 [1.01-1.02]; England: 1.4%-2.6%, AOR = 1.02 [1.01-1.03]; US: 3.3%-4.9%, AOR = 1.02 [1.01-1.02]). Vaping increased in all countries (Canada: 8.4%-17.8%; England: 8.7%-12.6%; United States: 11.1%-18.5%; all p < .001). Smokers and vapers reported greater use of other combusted and non-combusted products than those who neither smoked/vaped (p < .001). Emerging product use was rare (≤1.5%). CONCLUSIONS Youth past 30-day tobacco and nicotine product use increased from 2017 to 2019 in Canada and the United States, largely due to increases in vaping and other non-combusted products. "Other" tobacco/nicotine products were used predominantly by youth who smoked cigarettes and/or vaped.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cigarettes are the most harmful and most prevalent tobacco product in the USA. This study examines cross-sectional prevalence and longitudinal pathways of cigarette use among US youth (12-17 years), young adults (18-24 years) and adults 25+ (25 years and older). DESIGN Data were drawn from the first three waves (2013-2016) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study, a nationally representative, longitudinal cohort study of US adults and youth. Respondents with data at all three waves (youth, N=11 046; young adults, N=6478; adults 25+, N=17 188) were included in longitudinal analyses. RESULTS Among Wave 1 (W1) any past 30-day (P30D) cigarette users, more than 60%, persistently used cigarettes across three waves in all age groups. Exclusive cigarette use was more common among adult 25+ W1 P30D cigarette users (62.6%), while cigarette polytobacco use was more common among youth (57.1%) and young adults (65.2%). Persistent exclusive cigarette use was the most common pathway among adults 25+ and young adults; transitioning from exclusive cigarette use to cigarette polytobacco use was most common among youth W1 exclusive cigarette users. For W1 youth and young adult cigarette polytobacco users, the most common pattern of use was persistent cigarette polytobacco use. CONCLUSIONS Cigarette use remains persistent across time, regardless of age, with most W1 P30D smokers continuing to smoke at all three waves. Policy efforts need to continue focusing on cigarettes, in addition to products such as electronic nicotine delivery systems that are becoming more prevalent.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A holistic public health surveillance approach can help capture the public's tobacco and marijuana-related attitudes and behaviors. Using publicly available data from Twitter, this is one of the first studies to describe key topics of discussions related to each intersection (e-cigarette, combustible tobacco, and marijuana) of the Triangulum framework. METHOD Twitter posts (n=999,447) containing marijuana, e-cigarette and combustible tobacco terms were collected from January 1, 2018, to December 23, 2019. Posts to Twitter with co-occurring mentions of keywords associated with the Triangulum were defined as an intersection (e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco, combustible tobacco and marijuana, e-cigarettes and marijuana, and marijuana, e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco). Text classifiers and unsupervised machine learning was used to identify predominant topics in posts. RESULTS Product Features and Cartridges were commonly referenced at the intersection of e-cigarette and marijuana-related conversations. Blunts and Cigars and Drugs and Alcohol were commonly referenced at the intersection of combustible tobacco and marijuana-related discussions. Flavors and Health Risks were discussed at the intersection of e-cigarette and combustible-related conversations, while discussions about Illicit products and Health risks were key topics of discussion when e-cigarettes, combustible tobacco, and marijuana were referenced all together in a single post. CONCLUSION By examining intersections of marijuana and tobacco products, this study offers inputs for designing comprehensive FDA regulations including regulating product features associated with appeal, improving enforcement to curb sales of illicit products, and informing the FDA's product review and standards procedures for tobacco products that can be used with marijuana. IMPLICATIONS This study is the first to leverage the Triangulum framework and Twitter data to describe key topics of discussions at the intersection of e-cigarette, combustible tobacco, and marijuana. Real-time health communication interventions can identify Twitter users posting in the context of e-cigarettes, combustible tobacco, and marijuana by automated methods and deliver tailored messages. This study also demonstrates the utility of Twitter data for surveillance of complex and evolving health behaviors.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study examines sociodemographic patterns of exclusive/dual/polytobacco use among U.S. high school students using multiple national surveys. METHODS Using three national youth surveys (Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health [PATH] Wave 4 [2016-2017], 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and 2017 National Youth Tobacco Survey), we classified tobacco products into four groups: (1) electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), (2) conventional cigarettes (CCs), (3) other combustible tobacco products, and (4) smokeless tobacco products. We created 16 categories of non/exclusive/dual/polytobacco use within the past 30 days using the four product groups and calculated weighted population prevalence by sex and race/ethnicity (all surveys) and parental education and income (PATH), based on variable availability. RESULTS The results from 9,331, 12,407, and 9,699 high school students in PATH, Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and National Youth Tobacco Survey, respectively, largely agreed and pointed to similar conclusions. ENDS was the most prevalent exclusive use product (3.8%-5.2% across surveys), with CCs falling to second or third (1.2%-2.0% across surveys). By sex, exclusive, dual, and poly smokeless tobacco product use were more common for males, whereas exclusive CC use was more common for females. By race/ethnicity, non-Hispanic Whites had a higher prevalence of exclusive ENDS use and ENDS/CC dual use than non-Hispanic Blacks. As income and parental education levels increased from low to high, the prevalence of exclusive CC use decreased, whereas the prevalence of exclusive ENDS use increased. CONCLUSION Understanding sociodemographic patterns of tobacco use can help identify groups who may be at greater risk for tobacco-related health outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To provide tobacco product use patterns for US adults by sociodemographic group. DESIGN A secondary analysis of Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (2014-15), National Health Interview Survey (2015), and Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (2015-16). SETTING United States. SAMPLE Three nationally representative samples of adults (N = 28,070-155,067). MEASURES All possible combinations of cigarette, Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), other combustible product, and smokeless tobacco use, defined as current use every day or some days. ANALYSIS Weighted population prevalence and proportion among tobacco users of exclusive, dual, and polyuse patterns by sex, race/ethnicity, education, income, and age. RESULTS Exclusive cigarette use was the most prevalent pattern (10.9-12.8% of US population). Dual and polyuse were less prevalent at the population level (2.6-5.2% and 0.3-1.3%, respectively) but represented 16.7-25.5% of product use among tobacco users. Cigarette plus ENDS use was similar by sex, but men were more likely to be dual users of cigarettes plus other combustibles or smokeless tobacco. Among race/ethnic subgroups, non-Hispanic (NH) Whites were most likely to use cigarettes plus ENDS, while NH Blacks were most likely to use cigarettes plus other combustibles. Dual and polyuse were generally less common among adults with higher education, income, and age. CONCLUSION Differences in product use patterns by sociodemographic group likely represent different risk profiles with important implications for resulting health disparities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) are an important group of carcinogens found in tobacco and tobacco smoke. To describe and characterize the levels of TSNAs in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study Wave 1 (2013-2014), we present four biomarkers of TSNA exposure: N'-nitrosonornicotine, N'-nitrosoanabasine, N'-nitrosoanatabine, and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) which is the primary urinary metabolite of 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone. METHODS We measured total TSNAs in 11 522 adults who provided urine using automated solid-phase extraction coupled to isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. After exclusions in this current analysis, we selected 11 004 NNAL results, 10 753 N'-nitrosonornicotine results, 10 919 N'-nitrosoanatabine results, and 10 996 N'-nitrosoanabasine results for data analysis. Geometric means and correlations were calculated using SAS and SUDAAN. RESULTS TSNA concentrations were associated with choice of tobacco product and frequency of use. Among established, every day, exclusive tobacco product users, the geometric mean urinary NNAL concentration was highest for smokeless tobacco users (993.3; 95% confidence interval [CI: 839.2, 1147.3] ng/g creatinine), followed by all types of combustible tobacco product users (285.4; 95% CI: [267.9, 303.0] ng/g creatinine), poly tobacco users (278.6; 95% CI: [254.9, 302.2] ng/g creatinine), and e-cigarette product users (6.3; 95% CI: [4.7, 7.9] ng/g creatinine). TSNA concentrations were higher in every day users than in intermittent users for all the tobacco product groups. Among single product users, exposure to TSNAs differed by sex, age, race/ethnicity, and education. Urinary TSNAs and nicotine metabolite biomarkers were also highly correlated. CONCLUSIONS We have provided PATH Study estimates of TSNA exposure among US adult users of a variety of tobacco products. These data can inform future tobacco product and human exposure evaluations and related regulatory activities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Over 35% of the adult tobacco-using population regularly use more than one tobacco product. Although rates of tobacco use in the United States have declined over the last decade, rates of multiple tobacco product (MTP) have either remained stable (among adults) or increased (among youth). METHODS In this paper, we review the literature and propose a framework for understanding both MTP use and how regulatory actions on any single tobacco product (STP) may influence the use of other tobacco products. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Within the framework, Product, Person, and Context/Situational factors (and their interactions) influence product cross-substitution and thus patterns of use of MTPs. In addition, we propose that Context/Situation effects specifically increase the complexity of MTP-use patterns resulting in "dynamic complementarity" in addition to substitution-like relationships between tobacco products. Experimentation with, and use of, various tobacco products results in reinforcement histories that affect which products are used, in what contexts, and by whom, which in turn has downstream impacts on toxicant exposure and health. We conclude our analysis with an examination of how regulation of STPs can have impacts on the use of other STP and MTP use and provide research questions for further examining MTP use. IMPLICATIONS Though rates of tobacco use have declined in the United States, over 35% of the adult tobacco-using population regularly uses more than one tobacco product. This paper provides a framework for understanding MTP use and how regulatory actions on any STP may influence the use of other tobacco products. We conclude our analysis by providing research questions for further examining MTP use.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine how youth multiple tobacco product (MTP) users differ relative to non-users and to single-product users on risk factors at multiple levels of influence. METHODS We analyzed data on high school students from the North Carolina Youth Tobacco Survey, 2015 (n = 2922). Single- and MTP use were defined as use of one, or two or more tobacco products in the past month, respectively. Multinomial regressions estimated the association between risk factors and MTP use compared to single-product use and non-use of tobacco. Risk factors included intra-personal (e.g., harm perceptions), and interpersonal (e.g., household, peer tobacco use, secondhand smoke or vapor, and advertising) factors. RESULTS Of students, 12% and 13% were single product and MTP users, respectively. Many differences emerged between MTP users and non-tobacco users, with MTP users showing lower harm perceptions, higher perceived social benefits of smoking, significantly higher relative risk of having friends who use tobacco (RRR = 4.79, 95% CI 3.42, 6.70), of exposure to secondhand e-cigarette vapor (RRR = 1.35, 95% CI 1.23, 1.48), and of being receptive to tobacco marketing (RRR = 4.01, 95% CI 2.87, 5.61). Fewer differences emerged between MTP and single product users with MTP users having significantly higher relative risk of having friends who use tobacco (RRR = 2.31 95% CI 1.73, 3.07), of exposure to secondhand vapor (RRR = 1.10, 95% CI 1.02, 1.18), and of being receptive to tobacco marketing (RRR = 1.71, 95% CI 1.17, 2.50). CONCLUSIONS Efforts that target multiple tobacco product use should increase youth tobacco-related harm perceptions, and protect youth from social, peer, and industry influences.

Abstract
Introduction We examined trends in seven mutually exclusive tobacco product use patterns (T-PUPs) in nationally representative samples of U.S. youth over time and age. Methods We used time varying effect modeling on National Youth Tobacco Surveys, 1999-2014 (N = 38662, 9-17 years, M = 15.02). Regression coefficients were estimated as a non-parametric function of time. T-PUPs were cigarette only, non-cigarette combustible only, noncombustible only, non-cigarette combustible and noncombustible dual, cigarette and noncombustible dual, cigarette and non-cigarette combustible dual, and POLY (i.e. cigarettes, non-cigarette combustibles, and noncombustibles) use. Results Among youth tobacco users, cigarette only use was the predominant T-PUP from 1999 to 2010. After 2010 and 2013, non-cigarette combustible only (AOR 1.38, CI = 1.02-1.87) and noncombustible only (AOR 1.57, CI = 1.00-2.45) use became more prevalent than cigarette only use. In 2011, dual and POLY T-PUPs were on the rise although not significantly different from cigarette only use. Cigarette only use was the predominant T-PUP among 11- to 17-year-old tobacco users. Non-cigarette combustible only (AOR 0.14, CI = 0.10-0.19), noncombustible only (AOR 0.01, CI = 0.008-0.02), non-cigarette combustible and noncombustible (AOR 0.01, CI = 0.01-0.03), cigarette and noncombustible (AOR 0.02, CI = 0.01-0.04), cigarette and non-cigarette combustible (AOR 0.32, CI = 0.24-0.43), and POLY (AOR 0.02, CI = 0.01-0.04) use were less prevalent than cigarette only use at age 17. Conclusions Non-cigarette, dual, and POLY T-PUPs are rising among youth tobacco users. Screening for all tobacco use and delivering treatment during pediatrician visits should be standard clinical practice. Implications Tracking trends in tobacco product use patterns (T-PUPs) over time and age is necessary to achieve Healthy People 2020 goal of reducing tobacco use among youth. Trends over time show a rise of non-cigarette T-PUPs especially noncombustible products but cigarette only use remains the most prevalent among 11- to 17-year-old tobacco users. The recent extension of FDA's regulatory jurisdiction over all tobacco products (e.g. e-cigarettes, hookah) is a step toward comprehensive tobacco control especially among youth. Public health practitioners should extend prevention and cessation efforts among youth to T-PUPs beyond exclusive cigarette smoking.

Adolescents' first tobacco products: Associations with current multiple tobacco product use. PLoS One 2019; 14:e0217244. Abstract
Understanding which tobacco products adolescents use first can lead to insights for tobacco prevention interventions and policies. We used cross-sectional data from high school students who reported ever using a tobacco product from the 2017 North Carolina Youth Tobacco Survey (n = 1,053). In multivariable regressions, we examined how demographic and psychosocial factors were associated with adolescents' first product tried and how first product tried was associated with current tobacco use (i.e., no use, use of a single product, use of multiple products) and frequency of tobacco use. Cigarettes (34.8%) and e-cigarettes (33.7%) were the most frequently reported first products tried, followed by cigars (15.6%), smokeless tobacco (10.7%), waterpipe (4.0%), and other tobacco products (i.e., pipe tobacco or some other tobacco product) (1.2%). Demographic differences in adolescents' first product tried existed, with Black adolescents having higher odds of initiating tobacco use via cigars (aOR: 6.17, 95% CI: 3.75, 10.14). Adolescents who initiated tobacco use via cigars (aOR: 2.33, 95% CI: 1.31, 4.13) or smokeless tobacco (aOR: 2.45, 95% CI: 1.18, 5.04) had higher odds of being a multiple current tobacco product user, whereas adolescents who initiated tobacco use via e-cigarettes (aOR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.34, 0.93) had lower odds of being a multiple current tobacco product user. Additionally, adolescents who initiated tobacco use via smokeless tobacco had higher odds of currently using at least one tobacco product frequently (aOR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.04, 3.48), while adolescents who initiated tobacco use via e-cigarettes had lower odds of currently using at least one tobacco product frequently (aOR: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.23, 0.70). These findings suggest that most adolescents reported initiating tobacco use via cigarettes or e-cigarettes and that trying certain products first (e.g., cigars, smokeless tobacco) was associated with higher odds of multiple current tobacco product use.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Alternative tobacco product (ATP) use is popular among adolescents in Western countries, however, little is known about factors influencing ATP experimentation in Europe. The aim of this study was to explore factors associated with ATP experimentation, and to identify patterns of ATP experimentation among Hungarian adolescents who had ever tried manufactured cigarette smoking. METHODS Logistic regression analyses were applied to estimate the relationship between individual cigarette smoking experiences, social smoking influences, demographics, and ATP experimentation (roll-your-own (RYO) cigarettes, cigars/cigarillos, waterpipe, traditional pipe and flavoured cigarettes) in a cross-sectional sample of 8th and 11th grade students (N = 1,067, 56.0% of girls) who had ever tried manufactured cigarette smoking in six metropolitan cities of Hungary. Latent class analysis (LCA) was performed to identify patterns of different ATP use. RESULTS Almost 90% of the sample had ever tried ATPs and significantly more commonly older (91.8%) versus younger (79.8%) students. Waterpipe was the most popular product to try followed by flavoured cigarettes, cigars/cigarillos, RYO cigarettes, and pipe. Boys were more likely to report ATP experimentation compared to girls. Younger age of cigarette smoking experimentation, greater frequency of past month cigarette smoking and history of ever daily smoking for 30 days showed strong association with ATP experimentation. Students with one or more smoking friends were more vulnerable to experiment with ATPs. Weekly allowance, school academic achievement and household smoking exposure showed no effect on the experimentation. LCA identified four subgroups of ATP experimenters comprising intense polytobacco experimenters (38.4%), mainly waterpipe experimenters (34.2%), moderate polytobacco experimenters (14.9%), and less interested experimenters (12.5%). CONCLUSION Tobacco prevention programmes targeting adolescents should emphasize the risks of using ATPs in addition to manufactured cigarettes. Accessibility of ATPs should be better regulated and restrictions should be strongly enforced in order to prevent potential harmful consequences of adolescent polytobacco use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Polytobacco use and experimentation is common among young adults. Additional research is needed to determine how these patterns of use impact perceptions of tobacco-related harm and risk. The current study examined whether a relationship exists between an increased number of tobacco products used and decreases in perceptions of harmfulness and health risk. METHOD Participants (N = 792) completed a survey assessing current/lifetime tobacco use, perceived absolute harmfulness of tobacco/nicotine products and perceived health risk of smoking. For some analyses, participants were grouped by polytobacco use status. RESULTS Among participants who ever tried a tobacco product, a greater number of products tried was associated with lower perceptions of harm (all p < .05). For e-cigarettes and hookah, nonusers rated tobacco products as more harmful compared to single product, dual, and poly users (all p < .05). Number of products tried predicted perceived harmfulness above and beyond demographic characteristics and polytobacco use status across all products. Similarly, number of products tried predicted perceived health risk above and beyond demographic characteristics and polytobacco use status for both lung cancer and heart disease risk. DISCUSSION Trying a greater number of tobacco products is associated with lower perceived harmfulness of tobacco products. Prospective studies are needed to determine if experimentation with more tobacco products leads to reductions in perceived risk of tobacco use and subsequent sustained use of tobacco.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Research has demonstrated a robust relationship between psychosocial risk factors (e.g., perceptions of health risk, peer and parent influences, and school climate) and adolescent tobacco use. However, whether internal assets (IAs), factors that promote healthy youth development, can mitigate the adverse effects of psychosocial risks on tobacco use has not been well researched. METHOD Using a population-based sample of middle and high school students (N = 112,364), multilevel logistic and negative binomial regression models estimated the direct effects of cumulative psychosocial risks and IAs on student tobacco use (e.g., combustible, non-combustible, alternative delivery systems) and assessed whether IAs moderated the relationship between psychosocial risks and tobacco use. RESULTS Results indicate that every additional psychosocial risk factor was associated with an estimated 100% (AOR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.88-2.22) to 57% (AOR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.52-1.62) increase in the odds of using tobacco and a 60% increase in the estimated number of products used. IAs were inversely associated with tobacco use and attenuated the association between cumulative psychosocial risks and use. Among students experiencing all five psychosocial risks, boys had an estimated 20% reduction, and girls an estimated 50% reduction, in the probability of tobacco use at the highest mean scores of IAs. CONCLUSION Universal, school-based prevention programs will benefit from identifying and targeting a set of shared risk and protective factors for tobacco use. Bolstering resilience by facilitating students' IAs represents a promising direction for youth focused prevention efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The risks of polytobacco use among young adults are unclear because we know relatively little about the consistency of multiproduct patterns over time and how these patterns impact cigarette smoking. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in multiple tobacco product use over time and associations with cigarette smoking quantity. METHODS Participants (n=335; 55% male) were 18-24 years old non-daily cigarette smokers living in California. Polytobacco use patterns were assessed quarterly for 2 years. RESULTS Transition analyses showed that while the number of products that had been used recently was volatile, the most common pattern was stability between timepoints. A longitudinal negative binomial regression model indicated that those who used more non-cigarette products also reported greater cigarette quantity. The strength of this relationship increased over time. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that individuals who use more tobacco products are at greater risk for increased cigarette smoking and maintaining a multiple product use pattern.

Abstract
PURPOSE Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are adolescents' most commonly used tobacco product and young adults' second most used. Little is known about ENDS use alongside other tobacco products (polytobacco use) and whether exclusive ENDS users differ from polytobacco ENDS users. METHODS In spring 2016, we surveyed a nationally representative sample of 3,517 13-25-year olds (36.9% 13-17-year olds), and examined sociodemographic and relative risk perceptions between two groups of past 30-day ENDS users: exclusive (only ENDS) and polytobacco (ENDS and at least one other tobacco product). RESULTS 4.5% of adolescents and 10% of young adults reported past 30-day ENDS use (n = 281; analytic sample). ENDS users were 38.8% female and 70.6% white. Over half (55.9%) were polytobacco ENDS users. The most common patterns of polytobacco ENDS use were ENDS and cigarettes (11.5%), ENDS and cigars (7.7%), and ENDS, cigars, and waterpipe (5.2%). Those who perceived ENDS to be less harmful than cigarettes were more likely to be exclusive ENDS users than those who perceived ENDS to be as or more harmful than cigarettes (adjusted odds ratio = 2.6, confidence interval = 1.2, 5.7). There were no differences between ENDS groups on age, race, sex, parental education, sexual orientation, or ENDS use frequency. CONCLUSIONS Just over half of ENDS users also used other tobacco products, increasing their risk for nicotine addiction and other health harms. The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for communicating product risk to consumers and should consider common patterns of use and relative risk perceptions in its ENDS public education efforts.

Abstract
E-cigarettes and other non-cigarette tobacco products are increasingly popular among youth. Little is known to inform public health efforts to reduce youth use. We examined psychosocial correlates of single and multiple tobacco product use among youth e-cigarette users. Data were from the 2014 Florida Youth Tobacco Survey (N = 69,923), a representative sample of Florida middle and high school students. Associations between combinations of e-cigarette, cigarette and other tobacco product (OTP) use and psychosocial variables were examined using multinomial logistic regression with an analytic sample of N = 2756. Most e-cigarette-using youth used at least one other product (81%). Perceiving cigarettes as easy to quit was significantly associated with greater likelihood of combined e-cigarette/OTP use (relative risk ratio (RRR) = 2.51, p < 0.001) and combined e-cigarette/cigarette/OTP use (RRR = 3.20, p < 0.0001). Thinking you will be smoking cigarettes in 5 years was associated with product combinations that include cigarettes. Tobacco company marketing receptivity was associated with multiple product user types. Given that specific psychosocial factors put youth at risk for concurrent use of e-cigarettes with tobacco products, public health efforts should address polytobacco use specifically, instead of individual product use. Youth perceptions about the ease of quitting cigarettes, intentions to continue smoking cigarettes and receptivity to tobacco company marketing are promising areas for messaging aimed at reducing e-cigarette polytobacco product use.

Abstract
Background: Few studies have examined differences in product consumption patterns and nicotine and tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) exposure between single versus dual- and poly-tobacco users. We applied the Tobacco Product Use Patterns (T-PUPs) model to fill this gap in the literature.Methods: Data from adults (age ≥18 years) who used any tobacco products during the 5 days prior to participating in the 1999-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. Participants were classified into seven T-PUPs: (1) cigarettes only, (2) noncigarette combustibles only, (3) noncombustibles only, (4) dual noncigarette combustibles and noncombustibles, (5) dual cigarettes and noncombustibles, (6) dual cigarettes and noncigarette combustibles, and (7) poly-tobacco use. Weighted regression models were used to compare product consumption, serum cotinine, and urinary total 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (i.e., NNAL) levels between single-, dual-, and poly-tobacco T-PUPs.Results: Dual- and poly-tobacco T-PUPs were associated with lower product consumption compared with single-product T-PUPs only in some cases (e.g., dual cigarette and noncombustible users smoked cigarettes on 0.6 fewer days in the past 5 days compared with cigarette-only users; P < 0.05). Dual- and poly-tobacco T-PUPs had either nondistinguishable or higher levels of serum cotinine and urinary total NNAL than corresponding single-product T-PUPs.Conclusions: Product consumption, and nicotine and TSNAs exposure of dual- and poly-tobacco product category users somewhat differ from those of single-product category users as defined by the T-TUPs model.Impact: Higher levels of cotinine and NNAL among dual- and poly-tobacco T-TUPs users compared with the single-product T-TUPs users may indicate health concerns. Abstract
PURPOSE Use of other tobacco products (smokeless tobacco, hookah, cigarillo, and e-cigarettes) is increasing, particularly among young adults, and there are few regulations on marketing for these products. We examined the associations between tobacco marketing receptivity and other tobacco product (OTP) use among young adult bar patrons (aged 18-26 years). METHODS Time-location sampling was used to collect cross-sectional surveys from 7,540 young adult bar patrons from January 2012 through March of 2014. Multivariable logistic regression analyses in 2015 examined if tobacco marketing receptivity was associated (1) with current (past 30 day) OTP use controlling for demographic factors and (2) with dual/poly use among current cigarette smokers (n = 3,045), controlling for demographics and nicotine dependence. RESULTS Among the entire sample of young adult bar patrons (Meanage = 23.7, standard deviation = 1.8; 48.1% female), marketing receptivity was consistently associated with current use of all OTP including smokeless tobacco (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]= 2.56, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.08-3.16, p < .001), hookah (AOR = 1.97, 95% CI 1.58-2.43, p < .001), cigarillos (AOR = 3.00, 95% CI 2.21-4.08, p < .001), electronic cigarettes (AOR = 2.43, 95% CI 1.93-3.04, p < .001), and multiple tobacco products (AOR = 2.93, 95% CI 2.45-3.51, p < .001). Among current smokers, marketing receptivity was significantly associated with use of smokeless tobacco (AOR = 1.63, 95% CI 1.22-2.18, p < .01), cigarillos (AOR = 1.81, 95% CI 1.22-2.70, p < .01), and multiple tobacco products (AOR = 1.58, 95% CI 1.27-1.97, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS OTP use is common among young adult bar patrons, and it is associated with tobacco marketing receptivity. Efforts to limit tobacco marketing should address OTP in addition to cigarettes.
