Abstract
Background: This study aimed to investigate the association between evacuation status and lifestyle-related disease risks among Fukushima residents following the Great East Japan earthquake. Methods: Fukushima health management survey respondents were classified into non-evacuees, returnees, evacuees in lifted areas, and evacuees in banned areas. During a seven-year follow-up, 22,234 men and 31,158 women were included. Those with a history of diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia at baseline were excluded. The odds ratios of risk factors (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were calculated using a logistic regression model. Spatial autocorrelation of the prevalence of these diseases in the Fukushima area in 2017, was calculated to detect the disease prevalence status. Results: The risks of diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were higher in evacuees in banned areas than in non-evacuees; the multivariable ORs were 1.32 (95% CI: 1.19–1.46), 1.15 (1.06–1.25), and 1.20 (1.11–1.30) for diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, respectively. Returnees and evacuees in lifted areas had no increased risk of diseases. The area analyzed had a non-uniform spatial distribution of diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, with clusters around Fukushima and Koriyama. Conclusion: Our findings imply the need for continuous support for evacuees in banned areas.

Abstract
Patients undergoing coronary angiography after myocardial infarction (MI) often develop cardiac and renal dysfunction. We hypothesized that the apolipoprotein A-I mimetic peptide 4F (4F) would prevent those complications. Male Wistar rats were fed a high-cholesterol diet for 8 days. The rats were then anesthetized with isoflurane and randomly divided into five groups: a control group (sham-operated rats), and four groups of rats induced to MI by left coronary artery ligation, the rats in three of those groups being injected 6 h later, with the nonionic contrast agent iopamidol, 4F, and iopamidol plus 4F, respectively. At postprocedure hour 24, we performed the following experiments/tests (n = 8 rats/group): metabolic cage studies; creatinine clearance studies; analysis of creatinine, urea, sodium, potassium, triglycerides, total cholesterol, very low-, low- and high-density lipoproteins (VLDL, LDL, and HDL); immunohistochemistry; histomorphometry; Western blot analysis; and transmission electron microscopy. In another set of experiments (n = 8 rats/group), also performed at postprocedure hour 24, we measured mean arterial pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, echocardiographic parameters, left ventricular systolic pressure, and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. 4F protected against MI-induced increases in total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL; increased HDL levels; reversed autonomic and cardiac dysfunction; decreased the myocardial ischemic area; minimized renal and cardiac apoptosis; protected mitochondria; and strengthened endothelia possibly by minimizing Toll-like receptor 4 upregulation (thus restoring endothelial nitric oxide synthase protein expression) and by upregulating vascular endothelial growth factor protein expression. 4F-treated animals showed signs of cardiac neovascularization. The nitric oxide-dependent cardioprotection and renoprotection provided by 4F could have implications for post-MI treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have shown that there is a correlation between lipid levels and depressive mood, and that lipids could be useful biomarkers for depression. We conducted this study to clarify the association between lipid levels and depressive mood in adolescents, especially in community samples. METHODS We analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) that was conducted from 2013 to 2016. A total of 2,454 adolescents aged 12-18 years (1,273 boys, 1,181 girls) participated in the Survey. We conducted a cross-sectional study using multiple logistic regression, adjusting for age, household income, daily energy intake, daily fat intake, and daily cholesterol intake, to assess the association between depressive mood and serum lipid levels. RESULTS Depressive mood was found in 8.7% of those included in the study. Borderline (110-129 mg/dL) and high (≥130 mg/dL) levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were significantly associated with depressive mood [Borderline level: odds ratio (OR)=5.55, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.56-19.81, p=0.01; High level: OR=5.73, 95% CI 1.06-31.08, p=0.04]. However, this association was not found in girls. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that depressive mood in boys is associated with higher LDL-C levels. Further investigation regarding this relationship and the underlying biological mechanisms is needed.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE This study provides a nationwide, population-based data on the incidence of benign essential blepharospasm in Asian adults. BACKGROUND To describe the incidence, patient demographics, and risk factors associated with benign essential blepharospasm. DESIGN Population-based retrospective study. PARTICIPANTS AND SAMPLES A total of 1325 patients with benign essential blepharospasm were identified. METHODS Patients with diagnosis of blepharopsasm between January 2000 and December 2013 were sampled using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. Secondary blepharospasm that may be related to neurological, trauma, and ocular surface disease were excluded. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURED Multivariate conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios for potential risk factors of benign essential blepharospasm. RESULTS The mean annual incidence was 0.10‰ (0.07‰ for males, and 0.12‰ for females). The peak incidence was in the 50 to 59-year-old age group (0.19‰). People living in urban regions have more risk of developing blepharospasm comparing to people living in less urban regions (p <0.01). White-collar workers also have higher chance of having blepharospasm (p<0.001). Significant difference between control group and case group in hyperlipidemia (p <0.001), sleep disorders (p <0.001), mental disorders (depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder) (p <0.001), dry eye-related diseases (dry eye, Sjögren's syndrome) (p <0.001), Parkinson's disease (p <0.004), and rosacea (p <0.021) were also identified. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Higher level of urbanization, white-collar work, sleep disorders, mental health diseases, dry eye-related diseases, Parkinsonism, and rosacea are possible risk factors for benign essential blepharospasm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Acute stress induces redistribution of circulating leucocytes in humans. Although effects on lymphocytes as adaptive immune cells are well understood, the mechanisms underlying stress effects on granulocytes and monocytes as innate immune blood cells are still elusive. We investigated whether the stress hormone norepinephrine (NE) and α-adrenergic receptors (α-ADRs) may play a mediating role. METHODS In a stress study, we cross-sectionally tested 44 healthy men for associations between stress-induced NE increases and simultaneous granulocyte and monocyte cell count increases, as measured immediately before and several times after the Trier Social Stress Test. In a subsequent infusion study, 21 healthy men participated in three different experimental trials with sequential infusions of 1- and 15-minute duration with varying substances (saline as placebo, the nonspecific α-ADR blocker phentolamine [2.5 mg/min], and NE [5 μg/min]): trial 1 = saline+saline, trial 2 = saline+NE, trial 3 = phentolamine+NE. Granulocyte and monocyte cell numbers were assessed before, immediately after, 10 minutes, and 30 minutes after infusion procedures. RESULTS In the stress study, higher NE related to higher neutrophil stress changes (β = .31, p = .045, R change = .09), but not epinephrine stress changes. In the infusion study, saline+NE induced significant increases in neutrophil (F(3/60) = 43.50, p < .001, η = .69) and monocyte (F(3/60) = 18.56, p < .001, η = .48) numbers compared with saline+saline. With phentolamine+NE, neutrophil (F(3/60) = 14.41, p < .001, η = .42) and monocyte counts (F(2.23/44.6) = 4.32, p = .016, η = .18) remained increased compared with saline+saline but were lower compared with saline+NE (neutrophils: F(3/60) = 19.55, p < .001, η = .494, monocytes: F(3/60) = 2.54, p = .065, η = .11) indicating partial mediation by α-ADRs. Trials did not differ in eosinophil and basophil count reactivity. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that NE-induced immediate increases in neutrophil and monocyte numbers resemble psychosocial stress effects and can be reduced by blockade of α-ADRs.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum lipid concentrations and PTSD symptoms in the bereaved after a traumatic familial loss. Eighteen months after the Sewol ferry disaster, 107 subjects who experienced traumatic losses as a result of the accident completed a mental and medical survey as well as laboratory tests for lipid profiles. At 30 months after the trauma, a total of 64 individuals completed a follow-up psychometric survey and biochemical measurements. We performed multiple linear regression analyses, examining the association between PTSD symptoms and lipid profiles. Other potential influences on lipid profiles such as metabolic risk factors, demographic risk factors, and underlying medical history were accounted for. Participants reporting clinically significant PTSD symptoms exhibited lower serum HDL-C levels than those without PTSD symptoms. In addition, we found that the severity of PTSD symptoms and sex could explain the changes in lipid profiles independently of other possible risk factors of changes. The results of this study suggest that PTSD symptoms may contribute to an increased risk for developing metabolic syndrome via detrimental changes in lipid concentrations. Routine screening and multidisciplinary management to prevent metabolic syndrome in individuals who experience traumatic losses would therefore be valuable.

Abstract
Stress influences the risk of cardiovascular disease. Acute mental stress can induce both low-grade inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. The relationship between inflammatory responses to stress and future endothelial function is unexplored. Knowledge on the impact of other cardiovascular risk factors, such as dyslipidaemia, on such relationships is also limited We investigated the relationship between inflammatory responses to an acute mental stress challenge and endothelial function plus the influence of dyslipidaemia on the associations. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and fibrinogen were assessed at baseline, immediately following standardized behavioural tasks and 45 min post-task in 158 participants. Blood pressure and heart rate responses were measured. Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) was measured 3years later. Fibrinogen and IL-6 increased post-stress (p⩽0.001 & 0.003) but TNFα was unchanged (p=0.09). An independent negative association between FMD and change in fibrinogen at 45 min (β=-0.047 p=0.016) remained after multiple adjustment (baseline fibrinogen, baseline diameter, reactive hyperaemia, age, gender and other cardiovascular risk factors). There was no association between FMD and change in IL-6 or TNFα. There were no differences in the responses to stress between those with and without dyslipidaemia. However, there was an interaction between the presence of dyslipidaemia and immediate change in fibrinogen with stress which was associated with FMD. Those participants with dyslipidaemia who had a greater change in fibrinogen had lower FMD. We conclude that elevated fibrinogen responses to stress are associated with future endothelial dysfunction which may reflect increased cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric syndrome associated with high levels of sympathetic activation of the autonomic nervous system. Individuals diagnosed with PTSD have a high propensity for electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities, atrioventricular conductive defects, and cerebrovascular incidents. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate ECG abnormalities in post-war PTSD patients. METHOD This pilot study compared patients diagnosed with chronic post-war PTSD (n = 30) to patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD; n = 24) and healthy controls (n = 20). Following the completion of the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM (SCID), participants were assessed with a standard 12-lead ECG. RESULTS ECG abnormalities were observed in 66.7% of PTSD patients and 70.8% of MDD patients. In contrast, only 28.6% of the healthy control group showed ECG abnormalities. Multivariate logistic regression was used to adjust for participants' sex, smoking rate, education level, disease duration, and marital status. The results indicated that PTSD and MDD patients were more likely to have ECG abnormalities than the normal population (odds ratio for PTSD = 12.7, 95% confidence interval 1.9-83.9; and odds ratio for MDD = 14.9, 95% confidence interval 1.3-170.5). CONCLUSION PTSD and MDD patients showed elevated rates of ECG abnormalities compared to healthy controls. These findings have important implications for the medical treatment of PTSD and MDD given that both of these patient groups appear to be at increased risk of cardiovascular disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Yoga is a science practiced in India over thousands of years. It produces constituent physiological changes and has sound scientific basis. AIM Since exam stress modifies lipid profile and hematological parameters, we conducted an investigation on the effect of sudarshan kriya (SK and P) program on these parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS Blood samples of 43 engineering students were collected at four intervals namely baseline (BL), exam stress (ES), three and six weeks practice of SK and P during exam stress. Lipid profile and hematological parameters were measured at all four intervals. RESULTS ES elevated total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels. Hematological parameters affected by ES included neutrophil, lymphocytes, platelet count, packed cell volume (PCV) and mean cell volume (MCV). Three and six weeks practice of SK and P reduced the elevated lipid profile, hematological parameters and improved lymphocyte levels. CONCLUSION Our study indicates that SK and P practice has the potential to overcome ES by improving lipid profile and hematological parameters.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a pathology characterized by low-grade vascular inflammation rather than a mere accumulation of lipids. Inflammation is central at all stages of atherosclerosis. Acute coronary syndrome significantly affects the concentration and composition of the lipids and lipoproteins in plasma. Plasma triglyceride and very low density lipoprotein levels increase, while high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein and total cholesterol levels decrease. Early treatment of hyperlipidemia provides potential benefits. However, post-event changes in lipid and lipoproteins lead to delays in the choice of the treatment. This review focuses on the mechanism and the clinical importance of the relevant changes.

Abstract
Neuroglucopenia induced by 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) activates hypothalamic glucoreceptors leading to increased hepatic glucose production and insulin inhibition. This response is similar to what is observed with intravenous injection of angiotensin II (Ang II). However, the involvement of an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor on neuroglucopenia has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of chronic enalapril treatment on plasma glucose, insulin and lipid levels in response to neuroglucopenia. Male Holtzman rats (120-170 g) were chronically treated with enalapril (10 mg/kg per day) in the drinking water for two weeks. On the day of experiment the animals received an i.v. enalapril final dose one hour before the neuroglucopenic stress by 2DG infusion (500 mg/kg), and blood samples were drawn before and 5, 10, 20, 30 and 60 minutes following infusion. The hyperglycaemic response to 2DG was not significantly changed by enalapril treatment. The enalapril-treated group exhibited a peak of plasma insulin higher than controls. Plasma triglyceride showed a significant increase only in the enalapril group after neuroglucopenic stress (p < 0.05).These data show that chronic enalapril treatment changes insulin and triglyceride responses to neuroglucopenia, suggesting an effect on glucose-induced insulin secretion and the storage of triglycerides.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Substantial evidence shows that psychological factors are associated with cardiovascular diseases. However, data on the association between psychological factors and subclinical atherosclerosis is lacking in postmenopausal Chinese women. OBJECTIVES To examine the associations of perceived stress and trait anxiety with subclinical atherosclerosis in postmenopausal Chinese women in Hong Kong. Their relationships with biological and behavioral risk factors were also examined. METHODS Between 2002 and 2004, we recruited 518 postmenopausal women aged 50-64 years. Perceived stress and trait anxiety were evaluated by the perceived stress scale and the state-trait anxiety inventory, respectively. Subclinical atherosclerosis was determined by measuring carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque using B-mode ultrasonography. RESULTS Perceived stress and trait anxiety showed no significant association with IMT or plaque. Multivariate analyses showed high perceived stress scores were associated with an increased risk of elevated total cholesterol (OR=2.10; 95% CI=1.17-3.77) and elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (OR=2.39; 95% CI=1.36-4.21). High trait anxiety scores were associated with a 2.7-fold risk of elevated LDL-C (OR=2.74; 95% CI=1.56-4.80). Women with high perceived stress or trait anxiety scores were more likely to be physically inactive. CONCLUSIONS Perceived stress and trait anxiety were associated with atherogenic lipid levels, but not subclinical atherosclerosis. Maintaining high physical activity may help alleviate psychological stress and anxiety.

Abstract
Hypertension is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Hypertensive individuals show exaggerated norepinephrine (NE) reactivity to stress. Norepinephrine is a known lipolytic factor. It is unclear if, in hypertensive individuals, stress-induced increases in NE are linked with the elevations in stress-induced circulating lipid levels. Such a mechanism could have implications for atherosclerotic plaque formation. In a cross-sectional, quasi-experimentally controlled study, 22 hypertensive and 23 normotensive men (mean +/- SEM, 45 +/- 3 years) underwent an acute standardized psychosocial stress task combining public speaking and mental arithmetic in front of an audience. We measured plasma NE and the plasma lipid profile (total cholesterol [TC], low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C], high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides) immediately before and after stress and at 20 and 60 minutes of recovery. All lipid levels were corrected for stress hemoconcentration. Compared with normotensives, hypertensives had greater TC (P = .030) and LDL-C (P = .037) stress responses. Independent of each other, mean arterial pressure (MAP) upon screening and immediate increase in NE predicted immediate stress change in TC (MAP: beta = .41, P = .003; NE: beta = .35, P = .010) and LDL-C (MAP: beta = .32, P = .024; NE: beta = .38, P = .008). Mean arterial pressure alone predicted triglycerides stress change (beta = .32, P = .043) independent of NE stress change, age, and BMI. The MAP-by-NE interaction independently predicted immediate stress change of high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (beta = -.58, P < .001) and of LDL-C (beta = -.25, P < .08). We conclude that MAP and NE stress reactivity may elicit proatherogenic changes of plasma lipids in response to acute psychosocial stress, providing one mechanism by which stress might increase cardiovascular risk in hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine prospectively early-age heart disease (HD) among a national random sample of 4328 male Vietnam veterans, who did not have HD at baseline in 1985. Studies have suggested that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may result in cardiovascular disease. However, many past studies had important methodological limitations to their designs. METHOD Using Cox regressions, we assessed PTSD, age, race, intelligence, family history, obesity, smoking, alcohol abuse, antisocial personality, and depression in predicting HD mortality at follow-up in December 31, 2000. The men were <65 years old at follow-up. RESULTS Using two PTSD measures, a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd Edition (DSM-III) measure (D-PTSD) and one developed by Keane (K-PTSD), we found that among Vietnam theater and era veterans combined (era veterans had no Vietnam service), having PTSD was associated with HD mortality for D-PTSD (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.25, p = .045) and approached significance for K-PTSD (HR = 2.16, p = .066). However, having higher PTSD symptoms on either scale was associated with mortality, with a 5-point increase associated with approximately 20% increase in mortality risk (all p < .05). Controlling for lifetime depression only slightly altered the results. The effects for theater veterans alone were stronger (D-PTSD: HR = 2.58, p = .025; K-PTSD: HR = 2.73, p = .022). Among theater veterans, controlling for lifetime depression or combat exposure made little difference. CONCLUSION PTSD was prospectively associated with HD mortality among veterans free of HD at baseline. This study suggests that early-age HD may be an outcome after military service among PTSD-positive veterans.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Little work has investigated the relationship between unfairness and risk factors for heart disease. We examine the role of unfairness in predicting the metabolic syndrome and explaining the social gradient of the metabolic syndrome. METHODS The design is a prospective study with an average follow-up of 5.8 years. Participants were 4128 males and 1715 females of 20 civil service departments in London (Whitehall II study). Sociodemographics, unfairness, employment grade, behavioral risk factors, and other psychosocial factors were measured at baseline (Phase 3, 1991-1993). Waist circumference, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, fasting glucose, and hypertension were used to define metabolic syndrome at follow-up (Phase 5, 1997-2000), according to the National Cholesterol Education Program/Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines. RESULTS Unfairness is positively associated with waist circumference, hypertension, triglycerides, and fasting glucose and negatively associated with serum HDL cholesterol. High levels of unfairness are also associated with the metabolic syndrome [odds ratio (OR)=1.72, 95% CI=1.31-2.25], after adjustment for age and gender. After additional adjustment for employment grade, behavioral risk factors, and other psychosocial factors, the relationship between high unfairness and metabolic syndrome weakened but remained significant (OR=1.37, 95% CI=1.00-1.93). When adjusting for unfairness, the social gradient of metabolic syndrome was reduced by approximately 10%. CONCLUSION Unfairness may be a risk factor for the metabolic syndrome and its components. Future research is needed to study the biological mechanisms linking unfairness and the metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Panic disorder (PD) has been associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality. There are inconsistent reports of increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients with PD. Studies have reported a correlation between cholesterol levels and the intensity and frequency of panic attacks (PAs), suggesting that an elevation in cholesterol could be due to physiological and neurochemical changes that occur during and after a PA. The objective of our study was to show that the occurrence of a PA is associated with an increase in LDL-C. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design with randomized injections of placebo and pentagastrin in 18 patients with PD (11 men, 7 women) and 33 healthy-control subjects (24 men, 9 women). RESULTS Pentagastrin-induced PAs were associated with a statistically significant 10.4% delayed (24 h) increase in LDL-C levels in male subjects. Such an effect was not observed in female subjects. CONCLUSION LDL-C levels are directly affected by the occurrence of a PA in males. These findings, in association with previous reports of increased cholesterol levels in PD patients, suggest that a chronic increase in LDL-C as a result of frequent PAs may be one of the mechanisms that contributes, at least in male patients, to previously reported increased CV risk in patients with PD. The gender difference and the temporal association between PAs and increased LDL-C may explain the inconsistency in the findings of previous investigations of cholesterol levels in PD patients.

Abstract
In this study, the hypothesis was tested that behaviour of rats under the open field test condition and effects of subsequent acute stress relate to conformational properties of the main plasma carrier protein, albumin.To evaluate albumin properties, fluorescence intensity of a molecular probe CAPIDAN (N-carboxyphenylimide of dimethylaminonaphthalic acid) at N (at pH 7.4) and F (at pH 4.2) albumin conformations was measured and the N-F signal ratio was calculated. The data obtained showed that CAPIDAN fluoresces selectively from albumin in rat serum and its fluorescence is sensitive to binding of fatty acids and some other ligands to albumin. Behaviour of 78 Wistar male rats was characterized from the fraction of time taken for exploratory and ambulatory activity during the open field test. In rats not subjected to stress (n = 40), a negative correlation was revealed between open field activity and CAPIDAN N-to-F ratio for albumin (r = - 0.55, p < 0.0005). In the group of rats subjected to acute stress (immobilization plus stochastic electrocutaneous stimulation) the correlation between behavioural activity and the albumin conformational properties was significantly positive (r = 0.59, p < 0.0001): the CAPIDAN albumin fluorescence ratio increased in the highly active rats and decreased in the low-activity rats. The mechanisms of the observed effects may involve differences in nonesterified fatty acid production during stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the relationship between household income and metabolic syndrome in men and women. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 1,695 men and 1,664 women, aged 35-64 years, from three distinct geographical areas of France were investigated. Waist girth, plasma triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, glucose, and systolic blood pressure were used to define metabolic syndrome according to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP)/Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) guidelines. Household income, educational level, occupational category, working status, consumption of psychotropic drugs, accommodation status, household composition, physical activity at work and during leisure time, alcohol consumption, and smoking habits were recorded with a standardized questionnaire. RESULTS There were 390 (23.0%) men and 381 (16.9%) women who satisfied NCEP/ATPIII criteria for metabolic syndrome. Household income (P < 0.0001) and consumption of psychotropic drugs (P = 0.0005) were associated with metabolic syndrome in women but not in men. In contrast, educational level, occupational category, working status, and accommodation status were associated with metabolic syndrome in both men and women. After adjustment on lifestyle variables, household income (interaction P < 0.004) remained inversely associated with metabolic syndrome in women but not in men. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that limited household income, which reflects a complex unfavorable social and economic environment, may increase the risk of metabolic syndrome in a sex-specific manner.

Abstract
The authors assessed the association between lipid responses to acute mental stress and fasting serum lipid levels 3 years later in 199 middle-aged men and women. Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol increased following moderately stressful behavioral tasks. LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and total:HDL ratio measured 3 years later were predicted by acute stress responses independent of gender, age, socioeconomic position, change in body mass, smoking, alcohol consumption, or hormone replacement therapy baseline lipid levels. The odds of clinically elevated cholesterol were significantly greater in the highest compared with the lowest stress tertile, independent of baseline levels and covariates. Acute lipid stress responsivity may reflect processes that contribute to the development of elevated blood cholesterol concentration.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess eventual differences in serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio between veterans with combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) only or comorbid with major depressive disorder (MDD), veterans with combat experiences with MDD, and healthy control group. PTSD and/ or MDD were diagnose according to structured clinical interview based on DSM-IV criteria. Additional criteria to diagnose PTSD were Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS), and to diagnose MDD Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRAS). Serum lipid concentrations were determined by using the enzyme-assay method. Veterans with combat-related PTSD as well as veterans with combat-related PTSD comorbid with MDD showed significantly higher concentrations of cholesterol (F=9.858, p<0.01), triglycerides (F=10.112, p<0.01), LDL-C (F=11.145, p<0.01), and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (F=8.346, p<0.01) vs. veterans with MDD or healthy control group. Contrary healthy control group and veterans with MDD showed significantly higher concentrations of HDL-C (F=8.421, p<0.01), vs. veterans with PTSD or PTSD comorbid with MDD. In conclusion, there are no differences in serum lipid concentrations between veterans with combat-related PTSD and PTSD comorbid with MDD, but they have higher lipid concentrations than veterans with MDD or healthy control subjects.

Abstract
This study examined the role of shifts in plasma volume on lipid and immune reactions to stress. Lipid, immune, rheological, and cardiovascular reactions to exercise and mental stress in 51 patients with suspected coronary artery disease were determined. Blood pressure and heart rate were measured during and blood samples taken at the end of each rest and task. Lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL) and immune cells (lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes) increased with exercise, whereas cholesterol, LDL, and lymphocytes increased with mental stress. Plasma volume decreased by 1 and 5% following mental and exercise stress, respectively. The task-induced increases in lipids were no longer statistically significant following adjustment for changes in plasma volume, whereas the increases in immune cell numbers survived such correction. This study provides evidence that, in coronary artery disease patients, exercise and mental stress-induced increases in lipids but not immune cells can be largely accounted for by shifts in plasma volume.

Abstract
The subject of neuroinflammation is reviewed. In response to psychological stress or certain physical stressors, an inflammatory process may occur by release of neuropeptides, especially Substance P (SP), or other inflammatory mediators, from sensory nerves and the activation of mast cells or other inflammatory cells. Central neuropeptides, particularly corticosteroid releasing factor (CRF), and perhaps SP as well, initiate a systemic stress response by activation of neuroendocrinological pathways such as the sympathetic nervous system, hypothalamic pituitary axis, and the renin angiotensin system, with the release of the stress hormones (i.e., catecholamines, corticosteroids, growth hormone, glucagons, and renin). These, together with cytokines induced by stress, initiate the acute phase response (APR) and the induction of acute phase proteins, essential mediators of inflammation. Central nervous system norepinephrine may also induce the APR perhaps by macrophage activation and cytokine release. The increase in lipids with stress may also be a factor in macrophage activation, as may lipopolysaccharide which, I postulate, induces cytokines from hepatic Kupffer cells, subsequent to an enhanced absorption from the gastrointestinal tract during psychologic stress. The brain may initiate or inhibit the inflammatory process. The inflammatory response is contained within the psychological stress response which evolved later. Moreover, the same neuropeptides (i.e., CRF and possibly SP as well) mediate both stress and inflammation. Cytokines evoked by either a stress or inflammatory response may utilize similar somatosensory pathways to signal the brain. Other instances whereby stress may induce inflammatory changes are reviewed. I postulate that repeated episodes of acute or chronic psychogenic stress may produce chronic inflammatory changes which may result in atherosclerosis in the arteries or chronic inflammatory changes in other organs as well.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to evaluate the lipoprotein changes that occur during acute coronary events, and to determine the lipoprotein threshold levels that identify patients who require future statin therapy. Lipoprotein levels were measured at admission, at 6 hours, the morning after admission, before discharge, and 3 months after discharge in patients with myocardial infarction and unstable angina. Patients with myocardial infarction on thrombolytic therapy (n = 63) and patients with unstable angina (n = 33) had a decrease in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels < or = 24 hours after admission (-12 +/- 20% and -6 +/- 23%, respectively), but these levels returned to baseline before discharge. In patients with myocardial infarction who did not receive thrombolytic therapy (n = 37), the decrease was more gradual and peaked before hospital discharge (-7 +/- 19%). There was good correlation between LDL cholesterol levels at admission and after discharge, especially in normotriglyceridemic patients. Over 90% of patients with LDL cholesterol > or = 125 mg/dl on the morning after admission were candidates for statin therapy after discharge. Thus, the need for future statin therapy can be predicted with fair reliability during the initial 24 hours after admission. However, elevated baseline triglyceride levels significantly affect these LDL cholesterol changes and complicate prediction of long-term lipoprotein levels.

Abstract
Various psychosocial factors have been implicated in the etiology and pathogenesis of certain cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, now considered to be the result of a chronic inflammatory process. In this article, we review the evidence that repeated episodes of acute psychological stress, or chronic psychologic stress, may induce a chronic inflammatory process culminating in atherosclerosis. These inflammatory events, caused by stress, may account for the approximately 40% of atherosclerotic patients with no other known risk factors. Stress, by activating the sympathetic nervous system, the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, and the renin-angiotensin system, causes the release of various stress hormones such as catecholamines, corticosteroids, glucagon, growth hormone, and renin, and elevated levels of homocysteine, which induce a heightened state of cardiovascular activity, injured endothelium, and induction of adhesion molecules on endothelial cells to which recruited inflammatory cells adhere and translocate to the arterial wall. An acute phase response (APR), similar to that associated with inflammation, is also engendered, which is characterized by macrophage activation, the production of cytokines, other inflammatory mediators, acute phase proteins (APPs), and mast cell activation, all of which promote the inflammatory process. Stress also induces an atherosclerotic lipid profile with oxidation of lipids and, if chronic, a hypercoagulable state that may result in arterial thromboses. Shedding of adhesion molecules and the appearance of cytokines, and APPs in the blood are early indicators of a stress-induced APR, may appear in the blood of asymptomatic people, and be predictors of future cardiovascular disease. The inflammatory response is contained within the stress response, which evolved later and is adaptive in that an animal may be better able to react to an organism introduced during combat. The argument is made that humans reacting to stressors, which are not life-threatening but are "perceived" as such, mount similar stress/inflammatory responses in the arteries, and which, if repetitive or chronic, may culminate in atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Screening of young hypercholesterolemics is important because they are highly susceptible to atherosclerotic diseases. However, in some cases, serum cholesterol level may be elevated temporarily due to stress or other psychological factors. This study examined the effects of mood states on 'persistent' hypercholesterolemia in comparison with 'temporary' hypercholesterolemia among students entering a university. The subjects were 114 untreated first-year students aged 18 to 20 years old. All had been screened positive for hypercholesterolemia (serum total cholesterol > or = 220 mg/dl) upon enrolling in the university. Three months after the screening, they were divided into two groups according to the re-examined serum total cholesterol level; a persistent hypercholesterolemic group (n=41) with >220 mg/dl and a temporary hypercholesterolemic group (n=73) with <220 mg/dl. At that time, they completed the Profile of Mood States (POMS) with tension-anxiety, depression, anger-hostility, vigor, fatigue and confusion scales. The POMS depression scores and the female ratio were higher (both p<0.01) and body mass index was lower (p<0.05) in the persistent hypercholesterolemic subjects than in the temporary hypercholesterolemic subjects; the POMS depression scores were still higher (p<0.05) after controlling for the effects of gender, body mass index, and other POMS scales by multiple logistic regression analysis. Depressive mood appeared to relate to hypercholesterolemia when the university students were screened. Assessment of mood states may be important in screening young hypercholesterolemic patients.

Abstract
AbstractObjectives: Psychological coronary-proncncss is most probably one of the first recognised risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD). The mechanisms by which psychological risk factors might exert their influence on the cardiovascular system arc less clear than those for the more standard biological risk factors. The aim of this review was to classify all possible mechanisms of potentiation of CHD by psychological factors.Method: A MEDLINE search was conducted by selecting literature on both standard biological risk factors (eg. dyslipidaemia, hypertension, smoking) and psychological risk factors (eg. personality traits, behavioural characteristics, coping with stress) for CHD.Results: It was suggested that six biological mechanisms could mediate psychological influences specifically for CHD, of course, together with the seventh mechanism of general alterations in health-related behaviours. These are: increased oxygen demand of the heart muscle, decreased blood supply to the heart muscle, increased concentration of blood, enhanced blood clotting, increase in cholesterol and other plasma lipids, disturbances of blood sugar level, and alterations in health-related behaviours.Conclusions: If more studies of CHD were conducted with both physical and psychological risk factors simultaneously, it would be possible to investigate which of the above suggested mechanisms are important, which could in turn substantially improve both primary and secondary preventive measures.

Abstract
Research suggests psychological distress could result in arterial endothelial injury and coronary heart disease (CHD). Studies also show Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) victims have higher circulating catecholamines and other sympathoadrenal-neuroendocrine bioactive agents implicated in arterial damage. Here we analyzed resting 12-lead electrocardiographic (ECG) results among a national sample of 4,462 nonhospitalized male veterans (mean age = 38) about 20 years after military service by current posttraumatic stress (n = 54), general anxiety (n = 186), and depression (n = 157) disorders. ECGs were interpreted by board-certified cardiologists and summarized using the Minnesota Code Manual of Electrocardiographic Findings. Psychiatric disorders were diagnosed based on the Diagnostic Interview Schedule, Version III. Controlling for age, place of service, illicit drug use, medication use, race, body mass index, alcohol use, cigarette smoking, and education, PTSD (odds ratio [OR] = 2.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.17-4.26, p < 0.05), anxiety (OR = 1.51, 95% CI = 1.03-2.22, p < 0.05), and depression (OR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.13-2.58, p < 0.01) were associated with having a positive ECG finding. Specific results indicate PTSD was associated with atrioventricular (AV) conduction defects (OR = 2.81, 95% CI = 1.03-7.66, p < 0.05) and infarctions (OR = 4.44, 95% CI = 1.20-16.43, p < 0.05), while depression was associated with arrhythmias (OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.22-3.23, p < 0.01). The PTSD associations for AV conduction defects and infarctions held, even after controlling for current anxiety and depression. These findings suggest psychological distress may result in CHD, because we controlled for obvious biases and confounders, the men studied had current PTSD due to combat exposures 20 years ago, combat exposure was associated with anxiety and depression among these men, and the men were disease free a military induction. These findings suggest the need for clinical surveillance among combat veterans, better psychobiologic models of CHD pathogenesis, and additional research.

Abstract
The possibility that stress affects plasma lipid concentrations has been the subject of recent investigation, but the findings are equivocal in nonlaboratory settings. To determine whether psychological stress contributes to variability in plasma lipid concentrations and concomitant changes in health behaviors, the effect of increased work load on plasma lipids and apolipoproteins was examined in 173 lawyers. Plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, and apolipoprotein concentrations were studied during periods of high work load (corresponding to impending tax deadlines) and during periods of usual work load. Self-reports of stress, work load, and time pressure, and cortisol, blood pressure, and heart rate were measured to verify that impending deadlines were associated with increased stress levels. Health behaviors which may affect plasma lipoprotein concentrations, including dietary intake and exercise, were also examined. High work load was accompanied by increases in self-reported work load among lawyers most directly affected by the impending deadlines. Plasma apolipoprotein B and triglycerides increased during periods of high work load (M = 1.9 mg/dL, SD = 10.1 and M = 5.3, SD = 34.4, respectively). No changes in dietary intake and exercise were observed. Psychological stress (high work load) is associated with potentially atherogenic changes in plasma lipid concentrations. While the lipoprotein effect of this short-term work stress is small, the effects of longer-term stress on multiple rise factors including triglycerides and apolipoprotein B could have significance for the development of coronary artery disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental stress produces alterations in serum lipids and lipoproteins. OBJECTIVE The objective was to assess the effect of mental stress during the day and night on postprandial lipoproteins. DESIGN Fourteen healthy subjects aged 26.6 +/- 5.0 y were given randomly the same meal either at night (0100) or during the day (1300), with or without (control session) a mental stress challenge. The meal contained 40% of estimated daily energy needs. The mental task was performed on a computer and consisted of a task of choice reaction. Blood samples were drawn at baseline and hourly for 7 h after the meal. RESULTS Urinary epinephrine concentrations were higher (P < 0.012) during the mental task than during the control sessions. Repeated-measures analysis of variance showed that mean postprandial triacylglycerol concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.02) and total cholesterol (P < 0.0001) and HDL-cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower (P < 0.0001) at night than during the day. The mean postprandial VLDL-triacylglycerol concentration was significantly higher (P < 0.04) during the mental task than during the control sessions. Similarly, the VLDL-cholesterol response, calculated as the area under the postprandial curve, was significantly greater (P < 0.02) during the mental task than during the control sessions. There was no interaction between mental stress and nyctohemeral cycle on postprandial lipoprotein responses, suggesting that both indexes act independently on postprandial lipid metabolism. CONCLUSIONS Mental stress is associated with increased concentrations of postprandial triacylglycerol-rich lipoprotein fractions. Therefore, postprandial hyperlipidemia is one possible mechanism contributing to the higher risk of ischemic heart disease in stressed people.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to establish the temporal stability of lipid responses to acute psychological stress. Eighteen men were tested twice an average of 16.2 months apart in identical laboratory reactivity protocols. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, high- and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, plasma volume, heart rate, and blood pressure were assessed during rest, serial subtraction, and speech. After correction for changes in plasma volume, significant elevations were recorded for all variables during the speech task, but fewer variables showed changes during the serial subtraction task. Strong intersession associations were found when considering levels of the variables during baseline and stress (rs > or = .58). Correlations for the change scores ranged from .36 to .52 for the atherogenic lipids and from .39 to .87 for the cardiovascular variables. Little evidence was found for stability of plasma volume changes. There is moderate to high temporal stability of the atherogenic lipids when considering rest and stress levels and small to moderate temporal stability when considering change scores.

Abstract
Three experiments were conducted examining the contribution of beta-adrenergic receptors to stress-induced cholesterol increases. Rats were exposed to 3 90-min sessions of inescapable tailshock, or left undisturbed in their home cage. Propranolol, a nonselective beta-blocker, attenuated the stress-induced cholesterol increase when administered prior to the daily shock session. Atenolol, a beta-1 specific antagonist, also attenuated the stress-induced cholesterol increase. Butoxamine, a beta-2 specific antagonist, had no effect on the stress-induced cholesterol increases. Results are discussed in terms of catecholamine-stimulated free fatty acid (FFA) release as a potential mechanism for producing stress-induced hypercholesterolemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate risk for cardiovascular disease in patients with GAD, as well as the effects of comorbid major depression (MD). METHOD Predrug-trial serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels were assessed in 38 patients with pure GAD and compared with those of 21 patients with mixed GAD and comorbid (MD). RESULTS Significantly higher cholesterol and triglyceride levels were found in the GAD group.
