Abstract
Molecular hydrogen (H2, dihydrogen) is an antioxidant and signaling molecule with potent antioxidative, antiapoptotic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite the growing interest in H2 as a potential therapeutic agent, the evidence regarding its potential as a nootropic remains limited. Only a handful of studies on the human population have evaluated its effects, although there are suggestive indications of its efficacy. The present paper overviews H2's potential as a novel agent for improving cognitive functions in health and disease contexts, highlighting its mechanisms of action and areas for further investigation. Current evidence suggests that H2 improves executive function, alertness and memory in several clinical trials, from healthy young and elderly individuals to individuals with altered circadian rhythms, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer. Further investigations are needed to confirm the potential positive effects of dihydrogen as a nootropic agent in both health and disease.

Abstract
Lorlatinib has been FDA-approved as a systemic therapy for ALK/ROS1-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. However, it has been associated with an increased frequency of neurocognitive adverse events (NAEs). Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the NAEs related to lorlatinib therapy in NSCLC patients. PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and prominent conference proceedings were searched for eligible studies of lorlatinib in NSCLC patients. NAEs included cognitive, mood, speech, and psychotic effects. A total of 1147 patients from 12 studies were included; 62% had brain metastases. A pooled analysis of NAEs showed frequencies of cognitive effects of 14.57% (95% CI, 8.37 to 24.14, I2 = 84%), mood effects of 11.17% (95% CI, 5.93 to 20.07, I2 = 84%), speech effects of 7.24% (95% CI, 3.39 to 15.20, I2 = 72%), and psychotic effects of 4.97% (95% CI, 3.27 to 7.49, I2 = 21%). Clinical trials reported a significantly higher frequency of mood effects than was indicated by real-world data. These results highlight the importance of educating patients and healthcare professionals about lorlatinib-related NAEs for early detection and management to improve NSCLC patients' quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES While chemotherapy is the primary contributor to cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), interindividual differences in CRCI are not well-understood. Studies suggest that breast cancer (BC) survivors who are in pain are more likely to experience depression, which in turn contributes to CRCI, although this hypothesis is not yet tested. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between pain and CRCI among BC survivors and the mediation effect of depression on this relationship. METHODS As a secondary analysis of a descriptive cross-sectional study investigating fatigue and preferred types of fatigue self-management in BC survivors recruited from five tertiary hospitals in South Korea; of the 229 participants, data on 186 who received chemotherapy were analyzed. Study participants were aged between 20 and 69 years, diagnosed with stage I to III, and treated with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Measurement was done with Korean versions of the Cognitive Failure Questionnaire (to assess CRCI), Brief Pain Inventory (for pain severity and interference on daily functioning), and C-ESD (for depression). To assess bivariate relationships between pain, depression, and CRCI, Pearson correlation was used. A mediation analysis was used to examine the effect of depression on CRCI. RESULTS Significant associations were found among pain, depression, and CRCI (all P < 0.01). Furthermore, a mediation effect of depression was found on the association between pain and CRCI (severity, β = 1.26, SE = 0.38, 95% confidence intervals [0.60, 2.08]; interference, β = 1.53, SE = 0.32, 95% confidence intervals [0.95, 2.20]). CONCLUSION Findings indicate that among BC survivors, those with higher pain tend to show higher depression and consequently had lower cognitive function. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING PRACTICE Oncology nurses may need to identify BC survivors with higher pain, and screening those survivors could be a strategy to identify those at higher risk for CRCI. Also, nurses should focus on managing depression to prevent and/or treat CRCI in BC survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cancer-related cognitive impairment involves changes in cognitive domains among people diagnosed with cancer. This review aimed to explore and synthesize the experiences of women with breast cancer disclosing cancer-related cognitive impairment symptoms to health professionals. METHODS A systematic review and meta-synthesis was conducted to generate synthesized findings from existing literature. Six databases were searched from inception until mid-October 2022, with eligible studies appraised using the QualSyst Quality Assessment Checklist. RESULTS Three synthesized findings were generated from eight included studies. Findings highlight that women initiated conversations disclosing symptoms and frequently experienced dismissal or minimization from health professionals. Women rarely received information about cognitive impairment symptoms before treatment. Women reported that health professionals could be more involved in managing cognitive impairment symptoms. CONCLUSION This meta-synthesis highlights the importance of health professionals providing information before treatment and following up on cognitive impairment symptoms.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is increasing interest in developing new methods to improve sensitivity in detecting subtle cognitive deficits associated with cancer and its treatments. The current study aimed to evaluate the ability of a novel computerized battery of cognitive neuroscience-based tests to discriminate between cognitive performance in breast cancer survivors and controls. METHODS Breast cancer survivors (N = 174) and age-matched non-cancer controls (N = 183) completed the Enformia Cogsuite Battery of cognitive assessments, comprised of 7 computerized tests of multiple cognitive domains. Primary outcome measures included accuracy, reaction times (RT), and coefficients of variation (CV) for each task, as well as global scores of accuracy, RT, and CV aggregated across tests. RESULTS Linear regressions adjusting for age, education, and remote vs. in-office administration showed that compared to non-cancer controls, survivors had significantly lower performance on measures of attention, executive function, working memory, verbal ability, visuospatial ability, and motor function. Survivors had significantly greater CV on measures of attention, working memory, and processing speed, and significantly slower RT on measures of verbal fluency. CONCLUSIONS The Cogsuite battery demonstrates sensitivity to cancer-related cognitive dysfunction across multiple domains, and is capable of identifying specific cognitive processes that may be affected in survivors. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The sensitivity of these tasks to subtle cognitive deficits has advantages for initial diagnosis of cancer-related cognitive dysfunction, as well as detecting changes in survivors' cognitive function over time. The remote delivery of the battery may help overcome barriers associated with in-office administration and increase access to neurocognitive evaluation.

Abstract
Objective Previous studies have discussed the impact of chemotherapy on the brain microstructure. There is no evidence of the impact regarding cancer-related psychiatric comorbidity on cancer survivors. We aimed to evaluate the impact of both chemotherapy and mental health problem on brain microstructural alterations and consequent cognitive dysfunction in breast cancer survivors. Methods In this cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary center, data from 125 female breast cancer survivors who had not received chemotherapy (BB = 65; 49.86 ± 8.23 years) and had received chemotherapy (BA = 60; 49.82 ± 7.89 years) as well as from 71 age-matched healthy controls (47.18 ± 8.08 years) was collected. Chemotherapeutic agents used were docetaxel and epirubicin. We used neuropsychological testing and questionnaire to evaluate psychiatric comorbidity, cognitive dysfunction as well as generalized sampling imaging (GQI) and graph theoretical analysis (GTA) to detect microstructural alterations in the brain. Findings Cross-comparison between groups revealed that neurotoxicity caused by chemotherapy and cancer-related psychiatric comorbidity may affect the corpus callosum and middle frontal gyrus. In addition, GQI indices were correlated with the testing scores of cognitive function, quality of life, anxiety, and depression. Furthermore, weaker connections between brain regions and lower segregated ability were found in the post-treatment group. Conclusion This study suggests that chemotherapy and cancer-related mental health problem both play an important role in the development of white matter alterations and cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is one of the most prevalent symptoms that breast cancer survivors experience. While cancer treatments are established contributors to CRCI, inter-individual differences in CRCI are not well understood. Individual differences in sensitivity to uncertainty are potential contributors to CRCI; however, no prior studies have attempted to examine this link in the context of breast cancer. To address the gap, we used preliminary findings from an ongoing cross-sectional study. A total of 38 women with stage I-III breast cancer (1-4 years post-treatment) were included in this study. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) was assessed using the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale. Self-reported cognitive function was assessed with the Neuro-QoL questionnaire. Anxiety was assessed using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement System Bank. From this study, we found that anxiety mediates the association between IU and cognitive function of survivors. In other words, among post-menopausal breast cancer survivors, those with higher IU showed higher anxiety and consequently had lower cognitive function. This finding suggests that assessing IU may help predict the risk of CRCI. This study expands the current knowledge that addresses the importance of IU as a factor associated with cognitive health.

Abstract
Mothers with cancer report guilt associated with failing to successfully balance their parental roles and cancer. This study utilized a cross-sectional mixed-methods design and intersectional framework to investigate the multiple roles that mothers with cancer assume and their perceived coping ability. Participants included mothers diagnosed with any type or stage of cancer, in treatment or ≤3 years post-treatment, and experiencing cancer-related disability with a dependent child (<18 years, living at home). Participants completed a questionnaire battery, semi-structured interview, and optional focus group. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and thematic inductive analyses are reported. The participants' (N = 18) mean age was 45 years (SD = 5.50), and 67% were in active treatment. Their role participation (M = 42.74, ±6.21), role satisfaction (M = 43.32, ±5.61), and self-efficacy (M = 43.34, ±5.62) were lower than the general population score of 50. Greater role participation and higher role satisfaction were positively correlated (r = 0.74, p ≤ 0.001). A qualitative analysis revealed that the mothers retained most roles, and that their quality of life depended on their capacity to balance those roles through emotion-focused and problem-focused coping. We developed the intersectional Role Coping as a Mother with Cancer (RCMC) model, which has potential research and clinical utility.

Abstract
Background Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, may adversely affect gastrointestinal (GI), physical and mental health in survivors of cancer. Objective This study investigated associations between GI, mental and physical health outcomes, and cancer treatment-related variables, such as chemotherapy, in adult cancer survivors. Methods A one-time cross-sectional survey with patient-reported outcomes was used. Cancer survivors (N = 317) aged ≥18 years, living in Canada, who completed cancer treatments were included. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and linear regression analyses are reported. Results Mean age at diagnosis was 40.90 ± 15.40 years. Most survivors received chemotherapy (86.1%). Persistent GI symptoms include constipation (53.6%), diarrhea (50.5%), and bloating/pain (54.9%). Mean GI symptom duration was 30.53 ± 33.42 months. Severity of GI symptom interference was moderate to extreme for 51.9% of survivors. Compared to normative values of 50 in healthy people, survivors scored poorer for mental health (M = 42.72 ± 8.16) and physical health (M = 45.55 ± 7.93), and reported more belly pain (M = 56.10 ± 8.58), constipation (M = 54.38 ± 6.81), diarrhea (M = 55.69 ± 6.77), and gas/bloating (M = 56.08 ± 8.12). Greater GI symptom severity was associated with poorer mental and physical health (P < .01). Chemotherapy was associated with increased belly pain (B = 4.83, SE = 1.65, P < .01) and gas/bloating (B = 3.06, SE = 1.45, P = .04). Conclusion We provide novel evidence that many cancer survivors experience chronic, moderate to severe GI symptoms lasting for years after cancer treatment, which are associated with worse mental and physical health. Chemotherapy is associated with specific GI symptoms. Integrative therapies are needed to address GI symptoms in cancer survivors.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study examined associations between self-reported cognitive functioning and social support as well as social ties among women with breast cancer. METHODS The study included 3351 women from the Women's Health Initiative Life and Longevity After Cancer cohort who were diagnosed with breast cancer stages I-III. Social support was assessed using a modified Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Social Support Survey, and marital status was obtained from the baseline questionnaire. We also assessed social ties (e.g., number of friends, relatives, living children) and cognitive function (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function [FACT-COG]) on the year-1-follow up questionnaire. Multivariable quantile regression was used to estimate the changes in median cognitive scores. Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to assess the association of cognitive function with social ties. RESULTS The majority of participants were non-Hispanic White (93.3%), presently married (49%), with at least a 4-year college degree (53.2%), and had been diagnosed with localized breast cancer (79%). A 10-point higher social support score correlated to a 0.32 higher (better) median cognitive score (p < 0.001). Women who were presently married tended to have better cognition than women who were divorced/separated or widowed (p = 0.01). Significant associations were also present for having close relatives (p < 0.001) or friends (p < 0.001), with cognitive scores being higher in those with at least one close relative or friend compared to none. CONCLUSION Women reporting higher social support and greater numbers of friends or relatives have higher cognitive functioning. Compared to divorced or separated women, married women were likely to have higher cognitive functioning. These findings suggest that social support assessments have the potential to help identify women at higher risk of cognitive decline.

Abstract
Knowledge of the complexity of the gut microbiota is expanding, and its importance in physiological processes and disease development is widely studied. The aim of this review is to present the most relevant and recent research on the associations between gut microbiota and oncologic disease. Recently, a number of associations between the gut microbiome and neoplasms—regarding tumorigenesis, prognosis and therapeutic efficacy—have been reported. The effects of the gut microbiome on these processes are via the direct and indirect immunomodulating effects of bacteria. Studies have been done mainly in adult populations, where its effect on immunomodulating therapies was unambiguous. In paediatric populations, however, due to the low number of cases and the complex therapeutic approaches, there have been only a few studies. Among them, children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia were mainly involved. Significant alterations in the abundance of certain bacteria were associated with altered therapeutic responses. Regarding solid tumours, studies with low case numbers have been reported; no significant discoveries have been described so far. In the future, studies with larger cohorts are needed in order to better understand the associations between bacteria and neoplasms and to improve prognosis in the paediatric oncologic population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In recent years, growing attention has been given to the study of the impact of cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) in working non-central nervous system (CNS) cancer survivors. Available literature has shown that working cancer survivors identify cognitive problems at work as very problematic and worrisome. Some reviews have discussed the association between CRCI and work-related outcomes; however, none to date have investigated this association through comprehensive systematic review with meta-analysis. Hence, this work will comprehensively summarise existing evidence from quantitative studies assessing the relationship between CRCI and work-related outcomes of adult non-CNS cancer survivors at working age. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The systematic review procedures and its report will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Electronic searches in the databases Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest, PsycINFO and CINAHL, complemented by a manual search of other relevant articles, will be performed from 2000 onwards to identify relevant publications. Two independent reviewers will assess studies for inclusion and extract data from each article using a standardised form. Studies eligible for inclusion must be quantitative, contain adult non-CNS cancer survivors with CRCI, and a measure of cognitive functioning and work-related outcomes. To assess risk of bias, the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool Studies checklists will be independently used by the two researchers. Synthesis of the included articles will be conducted using a narrative method and through meta-analysis. Meta-analysis will be reported via correlation for the association between CRCI and work-related outcomes. The cumulative evidence will be assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethics approval is not required since individual patient data will not be collected. The findings will be published in a peer-review indexed journal, presented at scientific meetings and included in a chapter of a Doctoral thesis. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42020165458.

Abstract
Chemotherapy adversely affects the gut microbiota, inducing dysbiosis, and negatively impacts gastrointestinal (GI) and psychosocial health during treatment, but little is known about the long-term effects or how these factors are related. Methods: This cross-sectional pilot study investigated the effects of chemotherapy on the gut microbiota, GI symptoms, and psychosocial outcomes in cancer survivors aged 18−39 years old, compared to healthy controls. Gut microbial diversity and composition were assessed from stool samples using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results: Survivors (n = 17) and healthy controls (n = 18) participated. Mean age at diagnosis was 31 years (±5.3). Mean time off treatment was 16.9 months (±16.4). Survivors had more severe GI symptoms, poorer psychosocial health, and increased relative abundance of Selenomondales, Veilloneliaceae, and Intestinibacter. In survivors, Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae and Intestinibacter correlated with psychosocial symptoms, while diarrhea correlated positively with Lachnospiraceae. Results are statistically significant. Survivors ≤6 months post-treatment had lower alpha diversity than survivors >6 months post-treatment (p = 0.04) and controls (p = 0.19). Conclusion: This small exploratory study demonstrates potential long-term gut microbial dysbiosis in cancer survivors, which may be associated with psychosocial symptoms. Larger trials concurrently and longitudinally examining gut microbiota, GI symptoms, and psychosocial outcomes are needed.

Abstract
Purpose: Various physical problems and balance disorders are observed after mastectomy surgery in breast cancer survivors (BCSs). The study aimed to compare the balance functions in BCS women who had a mastectomy with healthy women.
Methods: Sixty-six individuals, BCSs (study group, n=33) and healthy (control group, n=33) women were included. Subjective balance problems and falling characteristics, static balance (Tandem Romberg Test-TRT) and, dynamic balance (Y Balance Test-YDT and computer-based dynamic balance platform-Technobody) were used in this study as outcome measures to compare the groups.
Results: The individuals in the study group (48.48%) experienced more balance problems than the control group (6.06%), but there was no difference between the two groups in terms of falling characteristics. Static balance (TRT) eyes-closed results were lower in the study group than the control group (t=-2.21, p=0.03), but there was no difference between the groups in TRT eyes-open results. There was no difference in any sub-parameter in dynamic balance measurements between the groups.
Conclusion: Subjective balance problems and static balance functions are affected more in BCSs than in healthy individuals. It is recommended that balance functions should be evaluated and followed up with appropriate treatment methods in BCS women who had a mastectomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer treatments can cause significant gastrointestinal (GI) health issues, and negatively affect patient's psychosocial health and quality of life (QOL). Novel, integrative strategies using prebiotics and probiotics have been explored for treating adverse cancer treatment-related side effects. We evaluated the current literature for interventions using prebiotics or probiotics specifically to treat GI and psychosocial health issues in cancer patients and survivors. METHODS Five databases (PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), CINHAL, PsychINFO, Web of Science) were searched for studies with prebiotic or probiotic interventions where GI and/or psychosocial health outcomes were measured in adult cancer patients and survivors, and published before September 12th 2021. RESULTS Twelve studies (N = 974 participants) meeting the inclusion criteria were identified (randomized controlled trials [n = 10], single-group pre-post studies [n = 2]). Ten studies were conducted with patients on active cancer treatment, and 2 studies treated patients after anti-cancer therapies. Three studies used prebiotics, 7 studies used probiotics, and 2 studies used a combination therapy. The most commonly used probiotic strains were from the Lactobacillus genus. There was minimal evidence for prebiotics to improve GI or psychosocial health. Probiotics were associated with significant improvements in abdominal pain (n = 2), gas/bloating (n = 2), and especially diarrhea (n = 5), and with improvements in anxiety (n = 1), depression (n = 1), fatigue (n = 1), and QOL (n = 2). CONCLUSIONS Studies specifically examining effects of prebiotics and probiotics on GI and psychosocial health outcomes are scarce. Probiotic intervention may improve some GI symptoms in cancer patients, and QOL in survivors. Controlled trials that consistently include GI and psychosocial health outcomes are needed.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Breast cancer is the leading type of cancer among women worldwide, and a high number of breast cancer patients are suffering from psychological and cognitive disorders. This cross-sectional study used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and clinical neuropsychological tests to evaluate the possible underlying mechanisms.We enrolled 32 breast cancer patients without chemotherapy (BC), 32 breast cancer patients within 6 to 12 months after the completion of chemotherapy (BC_CTx) and 46 healthy controls. Participants underwent neuropsychological tests and rs-fMRI with mean fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation and mean regional homogeneity analyses. Between groups whole-brain voxel-wise rs-fMRI comparisons were calculated using two-sample t test. rs-fMRI and neuropsychological tests correlation analyses were calculated using multiple regression. Age and years of education were used as covariates. A false discovery rate-corrected P-value of less than .05 was considered statistically significant.We found significantly alteration of mean fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation and mean regional homogeneity in the frontoparietal lobe and occipital lobe in the BC group compared with the other 2 groups, indicating alteration of functional dorsal attention network (DAN). Furthermore, we found the DAN alteration was correlated with neuropsychological impairment.The majority of potential underlying mechanisms of DAN alteration in BC patients may due to insufficient frontoparietal lobe neural activity to drive DAN and may be related to the effects of neuropsychological distress. Further longitudinal studies with comprehensive images and neuropsychological tests correlations are recommended.

Abstract
Novel treatments, screening, and detection methods have prolonged the lives of numerous cancer patients worldwide. Unfortunately, existing and many promising new chemotherapeutics can cause deleterious, off-target side effects in normal tissue and organ systems. The central and peripheral nervous systems are widely recognized as frequent off-target effectors of anticancer drugs which can produce persistent neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms collectively termed "chemobrain". Following chemotherapy, patients report several forms of cognitive impairment occurring acutely and sometimes persisting years after treatment. There are no effective treatments for cognitive decline induced by chemotherapeutics, and the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly characterized and understood. In this study, we find that chronic treatment with two common chemotherapeutic agents, cisplatin and gemcitabine, impairs brain region-specific metabolism, hippocampus-dependent memory formation, and stress response behavior. This corresponds to reduced hippocampal synaptic excitability, altered neuronal signal transduction, and neuroinflammation. These findings underline that a better understanding of the basic pathological consequences of chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment is the first step toward improving cancer treatment survivorship.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore whether caregiver characteristics were associated with cognitive complaints reported by women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. SAMPLE & SETTING 61 dyads of women with breast cancer and their caregivers were recruited at Duke Women's Cancer Care Raleigh in North Carolina. METHODS & VARIABLES An exploratory, cross-sectional design was used. Data were obtained on patients and caregivers. Patient cognitive complaints were represented by cognitive impairment (CI) and cognitive ability (CA). RESULTS Two significant associations were found. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Healthcare providers should consider caregivers when assessing and managing patients' cognitive symptoms. This study suggests the value of including caregivers when establishing interventions for patients who have cognitive complaints.

Abstract
Background. Most adult cancer survivors report a significant decrease of their quality of life and limitations in performing activities of daily living. Occupational therapy is a form of rehabilitation treatment that uses certain techniques and tools aimed at improving functional capacity, improve social participation and overall quality of life. Objective. The overall purpose of this narrative review is to provide a better understanding of the role that occupational therapy can play in the rehabilitation of cancer patients with a focus on the most important cancer-related aspects amenable and manageable by occupational therapy interventions and to increase awareness regarding this form of rehabilitation.
Discussion. Given the fact that there is constant grow in the number of cancer survivors with complex needs, rehabilitation and occupational therapy strategies can increase functionality and health-related quality of life of patients with cancer at any point of the disease, but it remains underused, due to certain barriers.
Conclusions. Occupational therapy, as part of cancer rehabilitation therapy, can lead to improvements in both short and long-term outcomes, while being cost-effective as goals are always set in collaboration with the patients and are aimed to identify and improve the activities most important and relevant for them.

Abstract
PURPOSE Previously we demonstrated the feasibility of a six-week-long combination of high-intensity interval endurance and strength training (HIT/HIRT) for women with nonmetastatic breast cancer leading to improvements in psychological well-being and performance. Now we report results of a 24-month follow-up. METHODS Previous intervention (IG, n = 10; 58.7 ± 8.4yrs) and control group (CG, n = 9; 58.8 ± 6.6yrs) were asked for follow-up examinations 12 (T12) and 24 months (T24) after cessation of the supervised training (POST). Medical history, mental well-being, performance and immunological variables were analyzed with respect to intervention start (PRE). RESULTS IG maximum oxygen consumption (⩒O2peak) 12%-improved POST (p = 0.05) and declined to baseline values T24, while CG ⩒O2peak increased 12% T24 (p = 0.01). IG strength (1RM) increased 31% POST (p < 0.001) and remained above baseline level T24 (p = 0.003), whereas CG 1RM slightly improved T24 (+19%, p = 0.034). IG Anxiety and Depression decreased POST and did not change until T24. IG C-reactive protein decreased POST and increased to pre-exercise levels T24. CG immunological/inflammatory/life quality markers did not change. CONCLUSIONS Six weeks of HIT/HIRT by breast cancer patients can induce similar beneficial effects like two years of convalescence, but outcomes were unstable and showed a fast backslide in aerobic capacity, activity level and in pro-inflammatory state within 12 months.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONHigh-intensity interval endurance and strength training (HIT/HIRT) for female breast cancer patients was shown to improve psychological well-being and performance, but long-term effects/adherence are unknown.Significant backslides in aerobic capacity, activity level as well as in the pro-inflammatory response after one and two years are observed and should be monitored.Continuous supervision and/or support of breast cancer patients before, during, and after medical care due to poor training adherence when voluntarily executed is recommended.

Abstract
Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) is a common detrimental effect of cancer treatment, occurring in up to 75% of cancer patients. The widely utilized chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) has been implicated in cognitive decline, mostly via cytokine-induced neuroinflammatory and oxidative and mitochondrial damage to brain tissues. C-phycocyanin (CP) has previously been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mitochondrial protective properties. Therefore, this present study was aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of CP against DOX-elicited cognitive impairment and explore the underlying mechanisms. CP treatment (50 mg/kg) significantly improved behavioral deficits in DOX-treated mice. Furthermore, CP suppressed DOX-induced neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, mitigated mitochondrial abnormalities, rescued dendritic spine loss, and increased synaptic density in the hippocampus of DOX-treated mice. Our results suggested that CP improves established DOX-induced cognitive deficits, which could be explained at least partly by inhibition of neuroinflammatory and oxidant stress and attenuation of mitochondrial and synaptic dysfunction.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the leading cancer among women worldwide, and a high number of breast cancer patients are struggling with psychological and cognitive disorders. In this study, we aim to use machine learning models to discriminate between chemo-brain participants and healthy controls (HCs) using connectomes (connectivity matrices) and topological coefficients. Nineteen female post-chemotherapy breast cancer (BC) survivors and 20 female HCs were recruited for this study. Participants in both groups received resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and generalized q-sampling imaging (GQI). Logistic regression (LR), decision tree classifier (CART), and xgboost (XGB) were the models we adopted for classification. In connectome analysis, LR achieved an accuracy of 79.49% with the functional connectomes and an accuracy of 71.05% with the structural connectomes. In the topological coefficient analysis, accuracies of 87.18%, 82.05%, and 83.78% were obtained by the functional global efficiency with CART, the functional global efficiency with XGB, and the structural transitivity with CART, respectively. The areas under the curves (AUCs) were 0.93, 0.94, 0.87, 0.88, and 0.84, respectively. Our study showed the discriminating ability of functional connectomes, structural connectomes, and global efficiency. We hope our findings can contribute to an understanding of the chemo brain and the establishment of a clinical system for tracking chemo brain.

Abstract
Chemotherapy causes various side effects, including cognitive impairment, known as 'chemobrain'. In this study, we determined whether a novel acupuncture mode called electroacupuncture trigeminal nerve stimulation plus body acupuncture (EA/TNS + BA) could produce better outcomes than minimum acupuncture stimulation (MAS) as controls in treating chemobrain and other symptoms in breast cancer patients. In this assessor- and participant-blinded, randomized controlled trial, 93 breast cancer patients under or post chemotherapy were randomly assigned to EA/TNS + BA (n = 46) and MAS (n = 47) for 2 sessions per week over 8 weeks. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) served as the primary outcome. Digit span test was the secondary outcomes for attentional function and working memory. The quality of life and multiple functional assessments were also evaluated. EA/TNS + BA treated group had much better performance than MAS-treated group on reverse digit span test at Week 2 and Week 8, with medium effect sizes of 0.53 and 0.48, respectively, although no significant differences were observed in MoCA score and prevalence of chemobrain between the two groups. EA/TNS + BA also markedly reduced incidences of diarrhoea, poor appetite, headache, anxiety, and irritation, and improved social/family and emotional wellbeing compared to MAS. These results suggest that EA/TNS + BA may have particular benefits in reducing chemotherapy-induced working memory impairment and the incidence of certain digestive, neurological, and distress-related symptoms. It could serve as an effective intervention for breast cancer patients under and post chemotherapy (trial registration: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov: NCT02457039).

Abstract
CONTEXT Patients with advanced cancer commonly suffer from both distressing symptoms and cognitive impairment, but the effect of cognitive impairment on the reliability and validity of symptom self-report is unknown. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the reliability and validity of symptom self-report in cancer outpatients with and without mild to moderate cognitive impairment. METHODS This was an analysis of the longitudinal European Palliative Care Cancer Symptom study of adults with incurable cancer in specialized palliative care (30 centers across 12 countries). Patients who could not comply with the study because of severe cognitive impairment were excluded. Cognitive status on the Mini-Mental State Examination short version and nine symptoms (pain, tiredness, drowsiness, nausea, appetite, breathlessness, depression, anxiety, and well-being) using the revised Edmonton Symptom Assessment System were self-reported at baseline and one-month follow-up. Reliability was analyzed using intraclass correlation coefficients and validity using regression of each symptom with health-related quality of life (HrQoL) measured with European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 15 for Palliative Care. RESULTS A total of 1047 patients were included: mean age of 62.9 years; 54.4% women; main cancer types were of digestive organs (26.6%), breast (21.6%), and lungs (21.2%). Cognitive impairment was present in 181 (17.3%) at baseline and associated with worse self-reported tiredness, drowsiness, appetite, and depression. Reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient) and validity (associations with HrQoL) were similar between people with/without cognitive impairment across the nine symptoms, except breathlessness, which showed a weaker relation to HrQoL in patients with cognitive impairment. Findings were robust in sensitivity analyses and after controlling for potential confounders. CONCLUSION In advanced cancer, self-report of nine major symptoms was reliable and valid also in people with mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To date, no German instrument exists to assess subjective levels of cancer-related cognitive impairments (CRCI) in cancer survivors. We translated the validated Attentional Function Index (AFI) into German and explored its psychometric properties. METHODS The validation sample consisted of 1,111 haematological cancer survivors mainly recruited from two cancer registries. Factorial structure was explored using principal component analysis, internal consistency via Cronbach's α, construct validity through correlational analyses (Pearson's r) and associations of patient characteristics with the AFI score via regression analyses. RESULTS In line with the original version, we revealed three factors, that is "effective action" (seven items), "attentional lapses" (three items) and "interpersonal effectiveness" (three items). The overall reliability α was .91. Verifying construct validity, the AFI score correlated positively with cognitive functioning (r = .64, p ≤ .01) and global QoL (r = .44, p ≤ .01), but negatively with fatigue (r = -.60, p ≤ .01) and depressive symptomatology (r = -.6, p ≤ .01). Older age (β = .12, p < .001), higher comorbidity (β = -.07, p = .02) and being male patient (β = .07, p = .01) were significantly associated with the AFI scores, but effect sizes were small. CONCLUSION The German translation of the AFI shows good psychometric properties and thus may be reasonably applied to measure the subjective level of CRCI in German-speaking oncological populations.

Abstract
Attenuating emesis elicited by both disease and medical treatments of disease remains a critical public health challenge. Although cannabinergic medications have been used in certain treatment-resistant populations, Food and Drug Administration-approved cannabinoid antiemetics are associated with undesirable side effects, including cognitive disruption, that limit their prescription. Previous studies have shown that a metabolically stable analog of the endocannabinoid anandamide, methanandamide (mAEA), may produce lesser cognitive disruption than that associated with the primary psychoactive constituent in cannabis, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), raising the possibility that endocannabinoids may offer a therapeutic advantage over currently used medications. The present studies were conducted to evaluate this possibility by comparing the antiemetic effects of Δ9-THC (0.032-0.1 mg/kg) and mAEA (3.2-10.0 mg/kg) against nicotine- and lithium chloride (LiCl)-induced emesis and prodromal hypersalivation in squirrel monkeys. Pretreatment with 0.1 mg/kg Δ9-THC blocked nicotine-induced emesis and reduced hypersalivation in all subjects and blocked LiCl-induced emesis and reduced hypersalivation in three of four subjects. Pretreatment with 10 mg/kg mAEA blocked nicotine-induced emesis in three of four subjects and LiCl-induced emesis in one of four subjects and reduced both nicotine- and LiCl-induced hypersalivation. Antiemetic effects of Δ9-THC and mAEA were reversed by rimonabant pretreatment, providing verification of cannabinoid receptor type 1 mediation. These studies systematically demonstrate for the first time the antiemetic effects of cannabinoid agonists in nonhuman primates. Importantly, although Δ9-THC produced superior antiemetic effects, the milder cognitive effects of mAEA demonstrated in previous studies suggest that it may provide a favorable treatment option under clinical circumstances in which antiemetic efficacy must be balanced against side effect liability. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Emesis has significant evolutionary value as a defense mechanism against ingested toxins; however, it is also one of the most common adverse symptoms associated with both disease and medical treatments of disease. The development of improved antiemetic pharmacotherapies has been impeded by a paucity of animal models. The present studies systematically demonstrate for the first time the antiemetic effects of the phytocannabinoid Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and endocannabinoid analog methanandamide in nonhuman primates.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative disorders, including chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment, are associated with neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction. Cisplatin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic, induces neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction in vivo and in vitro. Astrocytes are key players in supporting neuronal development, synaptogenesis, axonal growth, metabolism and, potentially mitochondrial health. We tested the hypothesis that astrocytes transfer healthy mitochondria to neurons after cisplatin treatment to restore neuronal health.We used an in vitro system in which astrocytes containing mito-mCherry-labeled mitochondria were co-cultured with primary cortical neurons damaged by cisplatin. Culture of primary cortical neurons with cisplatin reduced neuronal survival and depolarized neuronal mitochondrial membrane potential. Cisplatin induced abnormalities in neuronal calcium dynamics that were characterized by increased resting calcium levels, reduced calcium responses to stimulation with KCl, and slower calcium clearance. The same dose of cisplatin that caused neuronal damage did not affect astrocyte survival or astrocytic mitochondrial respiration. Co-culture of cisplatin-treated neurons with astrocytes increased neuronal survival, restored neuronal mitochondrial membrane potential, and normalized neuronal calcium dynamics especially in neurons that had received mitochondria from astrocytes which underlines the importance of mitochondrial transfer. These beneficial effects of astrocytes were associated with transfer of mitochondria from astrocytes to cisplatin-treated neurons. We show that siRNA-mediated knockdown of the Rho-GTPase Miro-1 in astrocytes reduced mitochondrial transfer from astrocytes to neurons and prevented the normalization of neuronal calcium dynamics.In conclusion, we showed that transfer of mitochondria from astrocytes to neurons rescues neurons from the damage induced by cisplatin treatment. Astrocytes are far more resistant to cisplatin than cortical neurons. We propose that transfer of functional mitochondria from astrocytes to neurons is an important repair mechanism to protect the vulnerable cortical neurons against the toxic effects of cisplatin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The gut microbiota is an important modulator of immune, metabolic, psychological and cognitive mechanisms. Chemotherapy adversely affects the gut microbiota, inducing acute dysbiosis, and alters physiological and psychological function. Cancer among young adults has risen 38% in recent decades. Understanding chemotherapy's long-term effects on gut microbiota and psycho-physiological function is critical to improve survivors' physical and mental health, but remains unexamined. Restoration of the gut microbiota via targeted therapies (e.g. probiotics) could potentially prevent or reverse the psycho-physiological deficits often found in young survivors following chemotherapy, ultimately leading to reduced symptom burden and improved health. METHODS This longitudinal study investigates chemotherapy induced long-term gut dysbiosis, and associations between gut microbiota, and immune, metabolic, cognitive and psychological parameters using data collected at < 2 month (T1), 3-4 months (T2), and 5-6 months (T3) post-chemotherapy. Participants will be 18-39 year old blood or solid tumor cancer survivors (n = 50), and a healthy sibling, partner or friend as a control (n = 50). Gut microbiota composition will be measured from fecal samples using 16 s RNA sequencing. Psychological and cognitive patient reported outcome measures will include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, pain, fatigue, and social and cognitive function. Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) will be used to measure fat and lean mass, and bone mineral concentration. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, C-reactive protein (CRP), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), serotonin, and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) will be measured in serum, and long-term cortisol will be assayed from hair. Regression and linear mixed model (LMM) analyses will examine associations across time points (T1 - T3), between groups, and covariates with gut microbiota, cognitive, psychological, and physiological parameters. CONCLUSION Knowing what bacterial species are depleted after chemotherapy, how long these effects last, and the physiological mechanisms that may drive psychological and cognitive issues among survivors will allow for targeted, integrative interventions to be developed, helping to prevent or reverse some of the late-effects of treatment that many young cancer survivors face. This protocol has been approved by the Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta Cancer Committee (ID: HREBA.CC-19-0018).

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. Adjuvant chemotherapy has significantly reduced mortality but increased cognitive impairments, including attention function, making quality of life issues a crucial concern. This study enrolled nineteen breast cancer patients who were treated with standard chemotherapy within 6 months and 20 sex-matched healthy controls to investigate the brain effects of chemotherapy. All participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) with mean fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (mfALFF) analysis and were correlated with neuropsychological tests, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Scale-Revised (CAMS-R), and the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), to explore the possible underlying mechanism of cognitive alternations. We found increased mfALFF over the frontoparietal lobe and decreased mfALFF over the occipital lobe in the cancer patients compared with the healthy controls; the altered brain regions may be associated with the dorsal attention network (DAN) and may be explained by a compensatory mechanism. Both MMSE and CAMS-R scores showed a positive correlation with mfALFF in the occipital lobe but a negative correlation in the frontoparietal lobe. By contrast, IES-R scores showed a positive correlation with mfALFF in the frontoparietal lobe but a negative correlation in the occipital lobe. These alterations are potentially related to the effects of both chemotherapy and psychological distress. Future research involving a larger sample size of patients with breast cancer is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast neoplasms are the most common cancer among women in Taiwan. Cognitive deficits are common complications of breast cancer survivors treated with chemotherapy. The most frequently observed disorders involve executive function and memory impairment. With improvements in tumor intervention and the consequent increase in the number of cancer survivors, the quality of life of patients has become an important issue. We are interested in the early effects of chemotherapy on the brain structures of patients. In addition, generalized q-sampling imaging (GQI), a wide range of q-space datasets for a more accurate and sophisticated diffusion MR approach, was first used in this topic. METHODS As diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is associated with restrictions in the resolution of crossing fibers, we attempted to use GQI, which can overcome these difficulties and is advantageous over DTI for tractography of the crossing fibers. This cross-sectional study included two groups: breast cancer survivors who had completed their chemotherapy (n = 19) and healthy controls (n = 20). All participants underwent diffusion MRI exams and neuropsychological assessments. We included four parts in our image analysis, i.e., voxel-based statistical analysis, multiple regression analysis, graph theoretical analysis and network-based statistical analysis. RESULTS The results from the voxel-based statistical analysis showed significantly lower GFA and NQA values in the breast cancer group than those in the control group. We found significant positive correlations between the FACT-Cog and GQI indices. In the graph theoretical analysis, the breast cancer group demonstrated significantly longer characteristic path length. Adjuvant chemotherapy affected the integrity of white matter and resulted in poor cognitive performance, as indicated by the correlations between the neuropsychological assessment scales and the GQI indices. In addition, it was found that the characteristic path lengths in the breast cancer group increased, indicating that the brain network integration became worse. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated alterations in structural brain networks and associated neuropsychological deficits among breast cancer survivors.

Abstract
Chemotherapy-Related Cognitive Impairment (CRCI) can be an adverse effect in women treated for breast cancer. Some longitudinal studies reported deficits in attention, memory, and executive function following treatment, but other studies did not find cognitive changes. It is known that practice effects (PE) on repeated assessments with cognitive tests contribute to the discrepancies in these results, but its influence on scores has not been systematically explored. The present study examines the impact of PE on retest scores in a group of women with breast cancer treated with chemotherapy and evaluated longitudinally. METHOD 51 women with breast cancer treated with a combination of 5-fluorouracil, epirubicin, and cyclophosphamide with or without taxanes were assessed after surgery but before chemotherapy (T1), post-chemotherapy (T2), and at one year after T2 (T3). Longitudinal changes on cognitive performance were analyzed twice: when retest scores were not corrected for PE and when correction for PE was applied to T2 and T3 scores. RESULTS When PE was not corrected, progressive improvement over time in measures of memory and divided attention at T2 and T3 was observed. In contrast, when PE was corrected, worsening was found in measures of memory, fluency, executive function, and attention at T2 and in attention and executive function at T3. Results after correction for PE are in line with previous longitudinal studies that report cognitive impairment after treatment with chemotherapy for breast cancer. CONCLUSION Accounting for PE is recommended to identify true change on cognition through treatment with chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Abstract
Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment, often referred to as "chemobrain," is a common side effect. In this study, mice received three intraperitoneal injections of a combination of docetaxel, adriamycin, and cyclophosphamide (DAC) at 2-day intervals. A water maze test was used to examine cognitive performance, and manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) was used to examine hippocampal neuronal activity. The whole brain, prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and blood samples were then collected for cytokine measurement. The DAC-treated mice displayed a significantly shorter duration spent in and fewer entries into the target quadrant of the water maze than the control mice and a pronounced decrease in MEMRI signal intensity in the hippocampal subregions. In a separate experiment using in vivo transcranial two-photon imaging, DAC markedly eliminated dendritic spines without changing the rate of spine formation, leading to a striking loss of spines in the medial prefrontal cortex. DAC treatment resulted in significant elevations in the levels of the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and in significant decreases in the levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10 in most of the sera and brain tissues examined. The IL-6 and TNF-α levels of several sera and brain tissues showed strong inverse correlations with the duration and number of entries in the target quadrant of the water maze and with the hippocampal MEMRI signal intensity, but also showed striking positive correlations with spine elimination and loss. These results indicate that chemobrain is associated with cytokine dysregulation and disrupted neuroplasticity of the brain.

Abstract
The central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract form the primary targets of chemotherapy-induced toxicities. Symptoms associated with damage to these regions have been clinically termed chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment and mucositis. Whilst extensive literature outlines the complex etiology of each pathology, to date neither chemotherapy-induced side-effect has considered the potential impact of one on the pathogenesis of the other disorder. This is surprising considering the close bidirectional relationship shared between each organ; the gut-brain axis. There are complex multiple pathways linking the gut to the brain and vice versa in both normal physiological function and disease. For instance, psychological and social factors influence motility and digestive function, symptom perception, and behaviors associated with illness and pathological outcomes. On the other hand, visceral pain affects central nociception pathways, mood and behavior. Recent interest highlights the influence of functional gut disorders, such as inflammatory bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome in the development of central comorbidities. Gut-brain axis dysfunction and microbiota dysbiosis have served as key portals in understanding the potential mechanisms associated with these functional gut disorders and their effects on cognition. In this review we will present the role gut-brain axis dysregulation plays in the chemotherapy setting, highlighting peripheral-to-central immune signaling mechanisms and their contribution to neuroimmunological changes associated with chemotherapy exposure. Here, we hypothesize that dysregulation of the gut-brain axis plays a major role in the intestinal, psychological and neurological complications following chemotherapy. We pay particular attention to evidence surrounding microbiota dysbiosis, the role of intestinal permeability, damage to nerves of the enteric and peripheral nervous systems and vagal and humoral mediated changes.

Abstract
PURPOSE As developments in cancer treatment have improved outcomes, research has increasingly focused on the role of cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) in quality of life for cancer survivors. Impairment profiles have been heterogeneous across studies, necessitating the study of these effects across different cohorts. The purpose of this preliminary study is to compare the memory profiles of Northeast Ontario breast and CNS cancer patients, as there is no literature which exists for profiling CRCI within this largely rural region. METHODS Sixty-three outpatients with breast cancer (n = 32) or CNS tumors (n = 30) at the Northeast Cancer Centre in Sudbury, Canada, were administered a neuropsychological test battery as part of their clinical examination. Domains measured within this study included attention and concentration, processing speed, motor function, language skills, verbal and visual memory, and executive functioning. RESULTS Participants with brain tumors scored poorer on most neuropsychological measures than participants with breast cancer. Initial verbal memory for individuals with breast cancer was lower than delayed recall and recognition trials. Trial 1 performance for this group was also negatively correlated with self-reported anxiety scores. CONCLUSIONS Consistent with the literature, participants with breast cancer obtained higher scores on most test measures than participants with CNC tumors. Breast cancer participants had lower verbal memory scores on initial trials compared to delayed recall, potentially due to relationships with anxiety and attention. Further research into this cohort will strive to gain greater understanding of the patterns of deficits experienced and how these may inform individuals with cancer in other regions.

Abstract
Patients with brain tumor exhibit wide-ranging prognoses and functional implications of their disease and treatments. In general, the supportive care needs of patients with brain tumor, including disabling effects, have been recognized to be high. This review (1) briefly summarizes brain tumor types, treatments, and prognostic information for the rehabilitation clinician; (2) reviews evidence for rehabilitation, including acute inpatient rehabilitation and cognitive rehabilitation, and the approaches to selected common symptom and medical management issues; and (3) examines emerging data about survivorship, such as employment, community integration, and fitness.

Abstract
As cancer evolves from a terminal illness to a chronic medical condition, so too does the view of clinical services. Palliative care and physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) will increase in acceptance because they provide a valuable resource. The overarching theme is improving cancer-related symptoms or treatment-related side effects, improving patient health-related quality of life, lessening caregiver burden, and valuing patient-centered care and shared decision making. Managing symptom burden may improve therapy participation/performance. PM&R and palliative care departments are well-equipped to develop patient-centered care protocols, and could play an important role in developing a universal measure of performance status.

Sustainable impact of an individualized exercise program on physical activity level and fatigue syndrome on breast cancer patients in two German rehabilitation centers. Abstract
PURPOSE Although physical activity has been demonstrated to increase cancer survival in epidemiological studies, breast cancer patients tend toward inactivity after treatment. METHODS Breast cancer patients were quasi-randomly allocated to two different groups, intervention (IG) and control (CG) groups. The intervention group (n = 111) received an individual 3-week exercise program with two additional 1-week inpatient stays after 4 and 8 months. At the end of the rehabilitation, a home-based exercise program was designed. The control group (n = 83) received a 3-week rehabilitation program and did not obtain any follow-up care. Patients from both groups were measured using questionnaires on physical activity, fatigue, and quality of life (QoL) at five time points, 4 months (t1), 8 months (t2), 12 months (t3), 18 months (t4), and 24 months (t5) after the beginning of the rehabilitation. RESULTS After 2 years, the level of physical activity (total metabolic rate) increased significantly from 2733.16 ± 2547.95 (t0) to 4169.71 ± 3492.27 (t5) metabolic equivalent (MET)-min/week in the intervention group, but just slightly changed from 2858.38 ± 2393.79 (t0) to 2875.74 ± 2590.15 (t5) MET-min/week in the control group (means ± standard deviation). Furthermore, the internal group comparison showed significant differences after 2 years as well. These results came along with a significantly reduced fatigue syndrome and an increased health-related quality of life. CONCLUSIONS The data indicate that an individual, according to their preferences, and physical-resource-adapted exercise program has a more sustainable impact on the physical activity level in breast cancer patients than the usual care. It is suggested that the rehabilitation program should be personalized for all breast cancer patients.

Abstract
Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is an important clinical problem for cancer patients and survivors. In this review, we summarize studies investigating the occurrence of impaired cognition in patients with haematological malignancies. Most published studies focus on survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and primary central nervous system lymphoma. We also discuss studies conducted in acute myeloid leukaemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, chronic myeloid leukaemia, Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), non-HL and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Although research in this area is still emerging, it appears that a subset of chemotherapy-treated haematological malignancy survivors experience CRCI. Future research should focus on expanding the literature reviewed here with larger studies appropriately powered to assess cognition via objective and subjective measures in a longitudinal fashion to tease apart the impact of disease and the various forms of cancer treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this scoping review was to determine the feasibility of conducting a systematic review of approaches for screening or assessing cognitive function that were comprehensive and that could be incorporated into clinical settings. METHODS Using the scoping review approach developed by Arksey and O'Malley, we searched Ovid Embase 1980-, Ovid PsycINFO 1806-, Ovid Health and Psychosocial Instruments 1985-, EBSCOhost CINAHL, ISI Web of Science (Science Citation Index 1900-), Social Sciences Citation Index 1900-, Conference Proceedings Citation Index -Science 1990-, Conference Proceedings Citation Index -Social Science & Humanities 1990-, Scopus 1960-, with no language restrictions. Searches were conducted in April 2009 and updated in February 2013. Studies of adults treated with chemotherapy that included at least seven of the eight domains of cognition were included. RESULTS Eleven studies met inclusion criteria. No screening tools suitable for inclusion in a clinic were identified. The studies reviewed varied by inclusion/exclusion criteria, design, and instruments for assessing cognitive function, and thus, there are not yet enough studies to warrant a systematic review on this topic.

Abstract
Disabling sequelae occur in a majority of patients diagnosed with brain tumor, including glioma, such as cognitive deficits, weakness, and visual perceptual changes. Often, multiple impairments are present concurrently. Healthcare staff must be aware of the "biographic disruption" the patient with glioma has experienced. While prognostic considerations factor into rehabilitation goals and expectations, regardless of prognosis the treatment team must offer cohesive support, facilitating hope, function, and quality of life. Awareness of family and caregiver concerns plays an important role in the overall care. Inpatient rehabilitation, especially after surgical resection, has been shown to result in functional improvement and homegoing rates on a par with individuals with other neurologic conditions, such as stroke or traumatic brain injury. Community integration comprises a significant element of life satisfaction, as has been shown in childhood glioma survivors. Employment is often affected by the glioma diagnosis, but may be ameliorated, when appropriate, by addressing modifiable factors such as depression, fatigue, or sleep disturbance, or by workplace accommodations. Further research is needed into many facets of rehabilitation in the setting of glioma, including establishing better care models for consistently identifying and addressing functional limitations in this population, measuring outcomes of various levels of rehabilitation care, identifying optimal physical activity strategies, delineating the long-term effects of rehabilitation interventions, and exploring impact of rehabilitation interventions on caregiver burden. The effective elements of cognitive rehabilitation, including transition of cognitive strategies to everyday living, need to be better defined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study examined the effects of cardiorespiratory fitness, heart rate recovery, and physical activity on working memory in breast cancer survivors and age-matched controls. METHOD Using a case-control design, 32 women who had received a breast cancer diagnosis and completed primary treatment within the past 36-months (11 radiation only; 21 chemotherapy) and 30 age-matched women with no previous cancer diagnosis completed a n-back continuous performance task commonly used as an assessment of working memory. In addition, cardiorespiratory fitness and heart rate recovery were measured during a submaximal graded exercise test and physical activity was measured using 7-days of accelerometer monitoring. RESULTS Breast cancer survivors who had received chemotherapy had poorer heart rate recovery (p = .010) and engaged in less physical activity than women who had received radiation only (p = .004) or non-cancer controls (p = .029). Cancer treatment (radiation; chemotherapy) predicted differences in reaction times on the 1-back working memory task (p = .029). However, more rapid heart rate recovery predicted shorter reaction times on the 1-back task in the age-matched control group (p = .002). All participants with greater cardiorespiratory fitness displayed greater accuracy independent of disease status on the 1-back task (p = .017). No significant group differences in reaction times were observed for 2-back target trials between breast cancer survivors and controls. However, greater total physical activity predicted shorter reaction times in breast cancer survivors (radiation, chemotherapy) on the 2-back task (p = .014). In addition, all participants who exhibited more rapid heart rate recovery demonstrated better greater accuracy regardless of disease status (p = .013). CONCLUSION These findings support differences in physical activty participation, heart rate recovery, and 1- and 2-back working memory reaction times between breast cancer survivors and age-matched controls. Greater cardiorespiratory fitness, heart rate recovery, and physical activity were positively associated with better working memory performance across conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research suggests that chemotherapy can cause deficits in both patients' objectively measured and self-reported cognitive abilities which can in turn affect their quality of life (QoL). The majority of research studies have used post-treatment retrospective designs or have not included a control group in prospective cohorts. This has limited the conclusions that can be drawn from the results. There have also been a disproportionate number of studies focussed on women with breast cancer, which has limited the generalisability of the results to other cancer populations. AIM This study aims to identify the extent and impact of chemotherapy-induced cognitive decline in colorectal cancer patients. Possible associations with poorer QoL will also be explored. DESIGN This will be a longitudinal controlled cohort study. Questionnaires measuring subjective cognitive functioning, QoL, fatigue and mood, and neuropsychological assessments of objective cognitive function will be collected pre-, mid- and post- chemotherapy treatment from a consecutive sample of 78 colorectal cancer patients from five London NHS Trusts. A further 78 colorectal cancer surgery only patients will be assessed at equivalent time points; this will allow the researchers to compare the results of patients undergoing surgery, but not chemotherapy against those receiving both treatments. Pre- and post-chemotherapy difference scores will be calculated to detect subtle changes in cognitive function as measured by the objective neuropsychological assessments and the self-reported questionnaires. A standardised z-score will be computed for every patient on each neuropsychological test, and for each test at each time point. The post-chemotherapy score will then be subtracted from the pre-chemotherapy score to produce a relative difference score for each patient. ANCOVA will be used to compare mean difference z-scores between the chemotherapy and surgery-only groups while controlling for the effects of gender, age, depression, anxiety, fatigue and education. DISCUSSION The result from this study will indicate whether a decline in cognitive functioning can be attributed to chemotherapy or to disease, surgical or some other confounding factor. Identification of risk factors for cognitive deficits may be used to inform targeted interventions, in order to improve QoL and help patients' cope.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cancer and its treatment may affect cognitive function through a number of direct and indirect pathways including inflammation, lipid metabolism, vascular damage, and changes in the blood-brain barrier. While short-term treatment-related cognitive changes are well recognized, only limited research is available in older, long-term survivors of cancer. METHODS Using NHANES data from 1999 to 2002, 408 cancer survivors and 2639 non-cancer participants aged 60 years old and above were identified. Cognitive function of these groups were compared using the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) and self-reported problems with memory or confusion. RESULTS After adjustment for covariates, cancer survivors scored, on average, 1.99 points lower on the DSST compared to non-cancer survivors (-1.99, 95 % CI -3.94, -0.05). Cancer survivors also had 17 % higher odds of self-reporting problems with memory or confusion (OR 1.17, 95 % CI 0.89, 1.53). CONCLUSION In this nationally representative sample of older US adults, cancer survivors had lower DSST scores than non-survivors and had more self-reported problems with memory or confusion.
