Abstract
BACKGROUND Lifestyle modification is essential to achieve and maintain successful outcomes after metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS). Emotions, physical states, and contextual factors are considered important determinants of maladaptive eating behavior, emphasizing their significance in understanding and addressing weight management. In this context, experience sampling methodology (ESM) offers promise for measuring lifestyle and behavior in the patient's natural environment. Nevertheless, there is limited research on its feasibility and association among emotions and problematic eating behavior within the population after MBS. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the feasibility of ESM in the population after MBS regarding emotions, physical states, contextual factors, and problematic eating behavior, and to explore the temporal association among these variables. METHODS An experience sampling study was conducted in which participants rated their current affect (positive and negative), physical states (disgust, boredom, fatigue, and hunger), contextual factors (where, with whom, and doing what), and problematic eating behavior (ie, grazing, dietary relapse, craving, and binge eating) via smartphone-based ESM questionnaires at 6 semirandom times daily for 14 consecutive days. Feasibility was operationalized as the study's participation rate and completion rate, compliance in answering ESM questionnaires, and response rates per day. At the end of the study period, patients reflected on the feasibility of ESM in semistructured interviews. Generalized estimation equations were conducted to examine the temporal association between emotions, physical states, contextual factors, and problematic eating behavior. RESULTS In total, 25 out of 242 participants consented to participate, resulting in a study participation rate of 10.3%. The completion rate was 83%. Overall compliance was 57.4% (1072/1868), varying from 13% (11/84) to 89% (75/84) per participant. Total response rates per day decreased from 65% (90/138) to 52% (67/130) over the 14-day study period. According to the interviews, ESM was considered feasible and of added value. Temporal associations were found for hunger and craving (odds ratio 1.04, 95% CI 1.00-1.07; P=.03), and for positive affect and grazing (odds ratio 1.61, 95% CI 1.03-2.51; P=.04). CONCLUSIONS In this exploratory study, patients after MBS were not amenable to participate. Only a small number of patients were willing to participate. However, those who participated found it feasible and expressed satisfaction with it. Temporal associations were identified between hunger and craving, as well as between positive affect and grazing. However, no clear patterns were observed among emotions, physical states, context, and problematic eating behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A sense of loss of control over eating, such that eating occurs despite the intent not to, is common in people with obesity and eating disorders such as binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa. Currently, options for management of loss of control eating are limited. We recently determined that the pro-drug N-acetylcysteine (NAC) reduces compulsive-like eating in a rat model of diet-induced obesity. We will now conduct a single site, open-label pilot study to examine the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of NAC for loss of control eating in humans. METHODS Thirty-six adult volunteers with loss of control eating will be enrolled. All participants will receive NAC at a dose of 1200 mg orally twice daily for 12 weeks. Eating behaviors and triggers will be assessed before and after the NAC treatment period using questionnaires (Eating Loss of Control Scale, Palatable Eating Motives Scale: Coping Subscale, Food Craving Inventory, Reward-Based Eating Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and Emotional Eating Scale) and ecological momentary assessment (EMA). The primary outcomes of this feasibility study are recruitment rate, participant retention rate at week 12, and medication adherence. The secondary outcome is change in Eating Loss of Control Scale score from baseline to week 12. Exploratory data will be collected on the change in eating behaviors from baseline to week 12. Although EMA can provide real-time data on eating behaviors compared with retrospective questionnaires, it relies on repeated daily measurement for long periods which can affect participant's adherence to study protocol. Therefore, this feasibility study will assess the performance of EMA versus retrospective questionnaires and will determine which approach suits the purposes of the research. DISCUSSION The results of this study will inform the feasibility of a RCT of NAC for loss of control eating using EMA. TRIAL REGISTRATION This study was prospectively registered with the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry in June 2022 (ACTRN12622000902796).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Studies have shown that early weight gain in family-based treatment (FBT) predicts treatment response in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN); however, research examining factors associated with early weight gain in FBT is limited. This study tested the feasibility and acceptability of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) in early FBT, particularly to capture momentary data on family climate during mealtimes. METHODS Using multiple methods, quantitative (EMA) and qualitative (interviews) data were collected in the first 4 weeks of FBT. Participants (11 families; 9 adolescents, 19 parents/caregivers) completed EMA assessments daily on the emotional climate during meals, parental strategies and confidence/agreement in renourishment. Qualitative interviews obtained technological and procedural data using EMA. Completion rates and markers of change were explored using repeated measures ANOVA. Interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS The EMA completion rate for all family members was 78%: 84% for adolescents, 83% for mothers, 64% for fathers. Results demonstrated changes in caregivers' use of renourishment strategies and in the emotional climate (decreased anger) at mealtimes. No changes were observed in caregiver confidence/agreement in renourishment. Qualitative analyses revealed factors interfering with and facilitating the use of EMA. DISCUSSION EMA is an acceptable and feasible tool for use with adolescents and their families in early FBT, particularly to capture momentary data on family climate during mealtimes. Future research is needed with larger sample sizes to examine the mechanisms of change in early FBT, and the utility of EMA as a clinical tool in FBT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Food addiction (FA) shows phenotypic and diagnostic overlap with eating disorders characterised by binge eating, though it is unknown how momentary processes driving binge-eating symptoms differ by FA. The present study examined the possible moderating influence of FA severity on momentary mechanisms underlying binge-eating symptomatology using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). METHOD Adults (N = 49, mean age = 34.9 ± 12.1, cis-gender female = 77.1%) who met criteria for FA and/or binge-eating disorder completed baseline measures including the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) followed by a 10-day EMA protocol. Generalised linear mixed models assessed main effects of YFAS, momentary antecedents (affect, impulsivity, food cue exposure, appetite, and eating expectancies) and two-way interactions between YFAS and within-person antecedents. RESULTS FA severity moderated momentary associations between food cue exposure and subsequent binge-eating symptoms: the association was stronger among participants with lower but not higher YFAS scores. No other interactions were significant. CONCLUSIONS Some functional associations underlying binge-eating symptoms vary based on individuals' level of FA symptoms. Future research to further understand how observed associations may differ amongst diverse populations and over course of illness may also inform future prevention and interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Psychotherapy is the cornerstone of the multidisciplinary treatment approach for eating disorders. This review examines recent evidence regarding effectiveness, predictors, and mechanisms of change of psychotherapy in eating disorders, providing a road map for clinicians and researchers. RECENT FINDINGS Family-based treatments (FBT) are effective in adolescents with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Evidence-based psychotherapies for anorexia nervosa have no evidence of superiority compared with treatment as usual (TAU) in adults with anorexia nervosa. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is the first-choice psychotherapy recommended for adults with bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder (BED). Self-help interventions have some evidence of effectiveness in nonunderweight individuals with eating disorders. Early symptom improvement and adolescent age predict more favourable outcomes. SUMMARY Evidence-based psychotherapies can be suggested for eating disorders, although follow-up data are needed. Beyond anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and BED, there is no evidence of psychotherapy effectiveness in other eating disorders. The effectiveness of novel (e.g. 'third-wave') psychotherapies, treatment delivery modality (e.g. internet-delivered), and adjunctive interventions (e.g. virtual reality) needs to be further explored. A broader definition of recovery is recommended, including behavioural, physical, and psychological criteria. Predictors and mechanisms of changes have not been studied enough: quantitative and qualitative studies are needed to promote more tailored and individualized psychotherapy interventions.

Abstract
The relationship between negative emotions and avoidance is widely theorized as a bidirectional cycle implicated in a range of psychopathology. Historically, research on this cycle has examined one type of negative emotion: anxiety. Yet, a broader range of internal experiences may be implicated in the maintenance of unhealthy avoidance cycles in psychopathology. This study examines prospective relationships among anxiety, guilt, physical discomfort, and experiential avoidance during mealtimes for individuals with eating disorders (EDs). Participants (N = 108) completed ecological momentary assessments four times a day for 25 days. We computed multilevel models to examine between- and within-person effects of negative emotions and physical discomfort on experiential avoidance. When including guilt and anxiety in one model, guilt, but not anxiety, explained the significant variance in experiential avoidance at the next meal. Mealtime physical discomfort and experiential avoidance evidenced reciprocal prospective relationships. Future research should test whether interventions targeting experiential avoidance and physical discomfort at mealtimes disrupt guilt.

Abstract
Bulimia nervosa (BN) is characterized by recurrent loss of control over eating (LOC) and inappropriate compensatory behaviors. Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is efficacious for BN, many patients continue to experience symptoms at posttreatment. One potential driver of this low treatment response may be low mood, which maintains BN symptoms through negative reinforcement. Thus, it is important to understand how mood changes over enhanced cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-E) and whether these changes are associated with improved treatment outcomes. Participants (N = 56) with BN-spectrum eating disorders (EDs) received 16 sessions of the focused version of CBT-E. The Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) was used to measure ED symptoms (global ED pathology, frequency of binge episodes, and compensatory behaviors) at pre- and posttreatment. Latent growth mixture modeling (LGMM) of affective ratings via digital self-monitoring identified latent growth classes. Kruskal-Wallis H tests examined the effect of trajectory of change in mood on pre- to posttreatment symptom change. LGMM yielded a four-class model that best fit the data representing distinct mood trajectories over the course of treatment: (a) highest baseline mood, linear improving; (b) moderate baseline mood, stable; (c) moderate baseline mood, quadratic worsening; and (d) lowest baseline mood, quadratic improving. Participants who demonstrated worsening mood over treatment (i.e., individuals in the "moderate baseline mood, quadratic worsening" class) had significantly higher EDE global scores at posttreatment and follow-up compared to participants with stable mood across treatment. Change in LOC eating frequency and compensatory behaviors across treatment did not significantly differ by mood class. The main effect of mood class or interaction effect between time and mood class on objective binge episodes, subjective binge episodes, and compensatory behaviors was not significant. There were no significant differences in global ED pathology at either posttreatment or follow-up for any other class comparisons. These results suggest that certain trajectories of change in mood during treatment are particularly associated with change in pre- to posttreatment EDE global score. If replicated, our findings could suggest that future iterations of CBT-E should target mood early in treatment in order to maximize reductions in global eating pathology.

Abstract
Disordered eating behaviors consistently associated with emotion regulation difficulties. However, most studies have focused on affect intensity without considering dynamic affective patterns. We examined these patterns in relation to daily overeating, loss of control eating (LOCE), dietary restraint, and food craving in young adults using ecological momentary assessment (EMA).Adults (N = 24) completed a 10-day EMA protocol during which they reported momentary affect and eating patterns. Generalized linear mixed-models examined each index in relation to eating variable.Higher PA instability (within-person) was associated with higher ratings of binge-eating symptoms (B = 0.15, SE = 0.06, p = 0.007). Lower NA differentiation (within-person) was associated with higher levels of food craving (B = -10.11, SE = 4.74, p = 0.033).Our results support previous findings suggesting that acute fluctuations in PA may increase risk of binge-eating symptoms. Further, inability to differentiate between momentary states of NA was associated with cravings. This study highlights the importance of examining multiple facets of NA and PA in relation to eating regulation.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02945475.

Abstract
Regular cannabis use (CU), defined as "weekly or more often", is associated with a number of negative mental health outcomes. In the last decade, Canada legalized first medical and then recreational CU. Despite higher prevalence in mental health populations, little research has documented changes in frequency of CU with progressive legalization of cannabis. This study examined rates of CU in a sample of 843 treatment-seeking patients with eating disorders (ED) in an outpatient setting between 2004 and 2020. Across ED diagnoses, segmented regression indicated a significant break-point in regular CU in 2014, commensurate with the relaxation of medical cannabis laws. Regular CU increased from 4.9 % to 23.7 % from 2014 to 2020; well above the stable 6 % found in the general population. No significant break-point was observed in either alcohol or illicit substance use over the same time period. Significant increases in regular CU were found in patients with anorexia nervosa and binge eating disorder, while regular use remained stable in patients with bulimia nervosa. Comorbid psychiatric diagnoses did not increase odds of regular CU. Findings suggest certain patient groups with mental illness may be at risk of engaging in high frequency use in the context of legislation implying medical benefits of cannabis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eating disorders (ED) are serious psychiatric disorders, taking a life every 52 minutes, with high relapse. There are currently no support or effective intervention therapeutics for individuals with an ED in their everyday life. The aim of this study is to build idiographic machine learning (ML) models to evaluate the performance of physiological recordings to detect individual ED behaviors in naturalistic settings. METHODS From an ongoing study (Final N = 120), we piloted the ability for ML to detect an individual's ED behavioral episodes (e.g. purging) from physiological data in six individuals diagnosed with an ED, all of whom endorsed purging. Participants wore an ambulatory monitor for 30 days and tapped a button to denote ED behavioral episodes. We built idiographic (N = 1) logistic regression classifiers (LRC) ML trained models to identify onset of episodes (~600 windows) v. baseline (~571 windows) physiology (Heart Rate, Electrodermal Activity, and Temperature). RESULTS Using physiological data, ML LRC accurately classified on average 91% of cases, with 92% specificity and 90% sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS This evidence suggests the ability to build idiographic ML models that detect ED behaviors from physiological indices within everyday life with a high level of accuracy. The novel use of ML with wearable sensors to detect physiological patterns of ED behavior pre-onset can lead to just-in-time clinical interventions to disrupt problematic behaviors and promote ED recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has been applied in psychological research for decades, delivery methods have evolved with the proliferation of digital technology. Technological advances have engendered opportunities for enhanced accessibility, convenience, measurement precision, and integration with wearable sensors. Notwithstanding, researchers must navigate novel complexities in EMA research design and implementation. OBJECTIVE In this paper, we aimed to provide guidance on platform selection for clinical scientists launching EMA studies. METHODS Our team includes diverse specialties in child and adolescent behavioral and mental health with varying expertise on EMA platforms (eg, users and developers). We (2 research sites) evaluated EMA platforms with the goal of identifying the platform or platforms with the best fit for our research. We created a list of extant EMA platforms; conducted a web-based review; considered institutional security, privacy, and data management requirements; met with developers; and evaluated each of the candidate EMA platforms for 1 week. RESULTS We selected 2 different EMA platforms, rather than a single platform, for use at our 2 research sites. Our results underscore the importance of platform selection driven by individualized and prioritized laboratory needs; there is no single, ideal platform for EMA researchers. In addition, our project generated 11 considerations for researchers in selecting an EMA platform: (1) location; (2) developer involvement; (3) sample characteristics; (4) onboarding; (5) survey design features; (6) sampling scheme and scheduling; (7) viewing results; (8) dashboards; (9) security, privacy, and data management; (10) pricing and cost structure; and (11) future directions. Furthermore, our project yielded a suggested timeline for the EMA platform selection process. CONCLUSIONS This study will guide scientists initiating studies using EMA, an in vivo, real-time research tool with tremendous promise for facilitating advances in psychological assessment and intervention.

Abstract
Food addiction (FA) is a concept centered around the addictive potential of highly palatable processed foods, though there is debate over the discriminative validity of FA as a distinct construct from binge-eating symptomatology. This study explored how trait measures of FA and binge-eating symptoms independently and interactively predicted eating behaviors and posited correlates of FA and binge eating measured via ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Adult participants (N = 49) who met the criteria for FA and/or binge-eating disorder completed baseline measures of FA (Yale Food Addiction Scale [YFAS 2.0]) and binge-eating symptoms (Eating Pathology Symptom Inventory [EPSI] binge eating scale) followed by a 10-day EMA protocol. Generalized linear mixed models examined the independent effects of YFAS 2.0, EPSI, and their interaction predicting EMA outcomes. Higher YFAS 2.0 symptom count scores were uniquely related to greater EMA-measured overeating, loss of control eating, negative and positive affect, and impulsivity when controlling for EPSI scores. Conversely, higher EPSI scores were uniquely related to greater EMA-measured eagerness and urge to eat, and expectancies that eating would improve mood. No interaction effects were significant. These results highlight potential distinctions between phenomena captured by FA and other measures of binge eating, in that FA symptoms may be a marker of heightened binge-eating severity, emotional arousal, and impulsivity.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be associated with eating problems. However, currently, there is a lack of established guidelines for assessing and addressing eating behaviors in individuals with ASD. This gap in research exists due to the challenges associated with using traditional assessment methods, which may lead to discrepancies in responses and unintentional potential biases from caregivers. In this review, we provided a comprehensive overview of various eating behaviors commonly observed in individuals with ASD. These behaviors include 1) food neophobia, 2) selective eating, 3) binge eating, 4) food avoidance, 5) chewing and swallowing problems, 6) pica, 7) rumination, 8) rituals, and 9) problematic behaviors. Furthermore, we provide a perspective of utilizing digital tools: 1) augmentative and alternative communication; 2) ecological momentary assessment; and 3) video analysis, behavioral analysis, and facial expression analysis. This review explores existing assessment methods and suggests novel assessment aiding together.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Theories suggest that elevated negative affect and weight/shape concerns explain both who is affected by bulimic symptoms as well as when bulimic symptoms occur, suggesting that individual differences predict within-subject differences. However, few studies have tested this theoretical premise. METHOD In the present study, participants (N = 119) diagnosed with bulimia nervosa (N = 57), purging disorder (N = 31), and non-eating disorder controls (N = 31) completed measures of negative affect and weight/shape concerns and later made momentary affect and weight/shape concerns ratings before and after an ad lib meal. RESULTS State negative affect and weight/shape concerns increased post-meal. No moderating effect of trait negative affect was observed for state affect. In contrast, between-subject differences in weight/shape concerns moderated within-subject increases in state weight/shape concerns. Diagnostic group did not account for this effect. DISCUSSION Findings point to viable treatment targets for disordered eating. Targeting elevated weight/shape concerns early in interventions could facilitate reductions in purging after food intake for bulimia nervosa and purging disorder. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE In the present study, individual differences in weight/shape concerns at baseline predicted greater increases in state weight/shape concerns following eating. These effects were maintained when considering possible differences related to presence and type of eating disorder. Results suggest that targeting weight/shape concerns earlier in treatment may be important for reducing maladaptive responses to eating across eating disorders.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inappropriate compensatory behaviors (ICBs), including purging, restricting, and excessive exercising, are key symptoms of several eating disorders (EDs). Studies have found positive associations between trauma and ICBs, although few studies have explored mechanisms that may explain these relationships. Emotion dysregulation has been posited as a mechanism that explains associations among ICBs and trauma. Given that individuals with high neuroticism may be particularly likely to use ICBs to regulate emotions following a trauma, the purpose of this study was to test whether neuroticism moderated the relationship between trauma-related symptoms and each type of ICB (purging, restricting, and excessive exercise). METHOD A community sample of adults with a DSM-5 ED (N = 263; 83.7 % female) completed measures of trauma-related symptoms, ED psychopathology, and personality. RESULTS Zero-inflated negative binomial models revealed that trauma-related symptoms alone predicted restricting and purging behavior. In addition, we found that neuroticism alone predicted the presence of excessive exercise. We found no significant interaction between trauma-symptoms and neuroticism. CONCLUSION Although past research has documented high rates of co-occurring ED and PTSD, the connections between trauma-related symptoms and ICBs are complex and may be unique to each type of ICB. Given that neuroticism may not influence the relationship between trauma-related symptoms and ICBs, more research should be done to establish an understanding of factors that could explain the relationship between ICBs and trauma-related symptoms. Novel interventions that simultaneously target restricting, purging, and trauma-related symptoms could be beneficial to explore.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Maladaptive exercise (i.e., driven and/or compensatory exercise) is common in binge-spectrum eating disorders (EDs; e.g., bulimia nervosa, binge ED) and associated with adverse treatment outcomes. Alternatively, individuals with EDs are often also engaging in adaptive exercise (e.g., for enjoyment or health improvement), and increasing adaptive exercise may decrease ED symptoms. The current study aimed to understand which exercise episodes are likely to be maladaptive/adaptive so that interventions can appropriately decrease/increase maladaptive and adaptive exercise. METHOD We used latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify pre-exercise affective profiles of 661 exercise episodes among 84 individuals with binge-spectrum EDs and examined associations between LPA-identified profiles and subsequent exercise motivations using ecological momentary assessment. RESULTS A two-profile solution best fit our data: Profile 1 (n = 174), 'positive affectivity,' and Profile 2 (n = 487), 'negative affectivity.' Episodes in the 'negative affectivity' profile were more likely to be endorsed as both driven and intended to influence body shape/weight. Episodes in the 'positive affectivity' profile were more likely to be endorsed as exercising for enjoyment. CONCLUSIONS Results support two phenotypes of exercise episodes, and differential associations of these phenotypes with adaptive and maladaptive motivations for exercise.

Abstract
Reward-related processes are an increasing focus of eating disorders research. Although evidence suggests that numerous distinct reward processes may contribute to eating pathology (e.g., reward learning and delay discounting), existing etiological models of reward dysfunction tend to focus on only a limited number of reward processes, and frequently lack specificity when identifying the individual reward processes hypothesized to contribute to dysregulated eating behavior. Moreover, existing theories have been limited in their integration of reward-related processes with other demonstrated risk and maintenance factors for eating disorders (e.g., affect and cognition), potentially contributing to underdeveloped models of eating pathology. In this article, we highlight five distinct reward processes with theorized or demonstrated relevance to eating disorders involving binge-eating, followed by a review of two well-established risk/maintenance factors for binge-eating pathology. We then introduce two novel models of binge eating onset and maintenance that integrate these factors (i.e., the Affect, Reward, Cognition models), and discuss methods for testing each of the models in future research. Ultimately, we hope that the proposed models provide a springboard for the continued evolution of more precise and comprehensive theories of reward dysfunction in the eating disorders, as well as the development of novel intervention approaches. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Eating disorders are associated with abnormalities in multiple domains of reward functioning. However, models of reward dysfunction within the eating disorders have not been well-integrated with prominent models of affect and cognition. This article presents two novel models of onset and maintenance for binge-eating pathology, which attempt to integrate observed reward abnormalities with other affective and cognitive processes implicated in binge-type eating disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) often engage in maladaptive exercise (e.g., feeling driven, or to "compensate" for eating) which maintains eating pathology. Maladaptive exercise has been theorized to help individuals with EDs regulate emotions by enhancing positive affect (PA) and reducing negative affect (NA) associated with binge episodes and poor body image. However, no research has considered the presence of non-maladaptive exercise or evaluated this theory in binge-spectrum EDs. METHODS This study evaluated affective trajectories pre- and post-exercise and examined exercise type (maladaptive or non-maladaptive) as a moderator. We recruited adults with binge-spectrum EDs (N = 107; n = 84 endorsed exercise) to complete a 7- to 14-day ecological momentary assessment protocol assessing NA (anxiety, guilt, and sadness), PA (excitement and cheerfulness), and exercise. RESULTS There was a significant quadratic trajectory of PA pre-exercise, suggesting that the upward trajectory of PA leveled out as it moved closer to an exercise episode. Exercise type significantly moderated the cubic trajectory of PA post-exercise, such that the upward trajectory of PA accelerated in the hours following non-maladaptive exercise episodes while the downward trajectory of PA accelerated in the hours following maladaptive exercise episodes. No trajectories of NA demonstrated significant effects. CONCLUSIONS Pre-exercise trajectories of PA may reflect positive expectancies around exercise. Post-exercise trajectories of PA suggest that non-maladaptive exercise promotes increased PA. Future research should evaluate when, and for whom, exercise serves to regulate affect and examine other momentary risk factors of exercise in EDs. Abstract
Eating disorders are severe mental illnesses characterized by the hallmark behaviors of binge eating, restriction, and purging. These disordered eating behaviors carry extreme impairment and medical complications, regardless of eating disorder diagnosis. Despite the importance of these disordered behaviors to every eating disorder diagnosis, our current models are not able to accurately predict behavior occurrence. The current study utilized machine learning to develop longitudinal predictive models of binge eating, purging, and restriction in an eating disorder sample (N = 60) using real-time intensive longitudinal data. Participants completed four daily assessments of eating disorder symptoms and emotions for 25 days on a smartphone (total data points per participant = 100). Using data, we were able to compute highly accurate prediction models for binge eating, restriction, and purging (.76-.96 accuracy). The ability to accurately predict the occurrence of binge eating, restriction, and purging has crucial implications for the development of preventative interventions for the eating disorders. Machine learning models may be able to accurately predict onset of problematic psychiatric behaviors leading to preventative interventions designed to disrupt engagement in such behaviors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Loss-of-control (LOC) eating is common in adults undergoing bariatric surgery. Agreement between real-time and retrospective assessment methods is unclear. METHODS Adults with severe obesity reported on LOC eating over the preceding 28 days via Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) items and in near real time over 10 days via ecological momentary assessment (EMA; involving daily repeated surveys delivered via smartphone in the natural environment), with both assessment forms completed before surgery and at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Wilcoxon signed rank tests and generalized linear mixed models were used to compare participants' EDE-Q and EMA reports of subjectively and objectively large LOC episodes across time points. RESULTS Participants reported subjectively large LOC episodes more frequently via EMA than EDE-Q across time points, although differences did not reach statistical significance (all p > 0.05). Conversely, objectively large LOC episodes were more frequently reported via EDE-Q than EMA, with differences reaching significance at 6 months post surgery only (p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Agreement between real-time and retrospective assessments of LOC eating varied by episode size and time elapsed in the year following surgery. These findings should be considered when designing assessment batteries for bariatric surgery-seeking adults and when extrapolating research findings across studies with diverging methods of real-time versus retrospective self-report assessment of LOC eating in adults undergoing bariatric surgery.

Abstract
Studies assessing the association between hunger and psychological states have been conducted in laboratory settings, or limited to persons with eating disorders. In this study, 748 community-dwelling adults (56.4% women, 60.0 ± 9.3 years) completed the Ecological Momentary Assessment four times a day (08:00, 12:00, 16:00 and 20:00) for seven days. At each assessment, respondents indicated their current hunger level, food intake, and psychological states (sad, anxious, active, lively, distracted, anhedonic, angry, slow thinking and restless). Time-lagged associations assessing the effect of hunger on subsequent psychological states 4 h later and vice-versa were assessed. Hunger intensity increased subsequent active feeling (coefficient and 95% confidence interval: 0.029 (0.007; 0.051)) and lively feeling (0.019 (0.004; 0.034)) and decreased later slow thinking (-0.016 (-0.029; -0.003)). Previous eating increased later activity (0.116 (0.025; 0.208)). Feeling active (0.050 (0.036; 0.064)), lively (0.045 (0.023; 0.067)) and restless (0.040 (0.018; 0.063)) increased later hunger intensity, while distraction (-0.039 (-0.058; -0.019)) and slow thinking (-0.057 (-0.080; -0.034)) decreased it. No association was found between hunger, food intake and negative psychological states (sadness, anxiety and anger). Conclusions: Positive psychological states and hunger influence each other, while no association was found between hunger and negative psychological states.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Eating disorders (EDs) are severe disorders with unsatisfactory outcome. Emotion dysregulation and self-image are suggested maintenance factors; this study examined emotion dysregulation as potential predictor and/or mechanism of change in relation to ED outcome, and associations between change in emotion dysregulation and self-image in relation to outcome. DESIGN Registry data from initial and 1-year follow-up assessments for 307 patients with a wide range of EDs in specialized ED treatment were used. METHODS Initial and change (∆) in emotion dysregulation were examined as predictors of 1-year outcome. Direct and indirect associations between ∆emotion dysregulation and ∆self-image as either independent variable or mediator in relation to ∆ED psychopathology as dependent were also examined. RESULTS Higher initial emotion dysregulation was weakly associated with higher follow-up ED psychopathology, but not remission, while relative increase in emotion dysregulation was associated with both higher follow-up psychopathology and increased risk of still having a diagnosis. Change in emotion dysregulation primarily had an indirect effect (through change in self-image), while change in self-image had a direct effect, on change in ED psychopathology improvement (such that improvement in one was associated with improvement in the other). CONCLUSIONS Results identify emotion dysregulation as a potential mechanism of change in relation to ED outcome. However, this association was mainly mediated by change in self-image. Results indicate that, in order to improve emotion regulation as a means to reduce ED psychopathology, improving self-image is essential.

Abstract
PURPOSE Maladaptive exercise (i.e., exercise that is either driven or compensatory) is thought to momentarily down-regulate elevated fear of weight gain (FOWG). However, little research has examined associations between FOWG and exercise, and no research has measured FOWG at a momentary level or considered exercise type (i.e., maladaptive vs. adaptive). Thus, we examined both within- and between-subject associations between FOWG and exercise among individuals with trans-diagnostic binge eating. METHODS We recruited treatment-seeking adults (N = 58, 82.9% female) to complete a 7-14-day ecological momentary assessment protocol which assessed levels of FOWG and exercise engagement and type. Mixed models and generalized estimating equations assessed within-subject associations, and linear regression assessed between-subject associations. RESULTS There was no main effect of FOWG on exercise engagement at the next survey. However, unexpectedly, exercise type moderated this relationship such that the relationship between FOWG and exercise was strongest for episodes of adaptive exercise. Overall exercise frequency accounted for 10.4% of the variance in FOWG and exercise type explained an additional 1.7% of the variance in FOWG. CONCLUSION The findings of the current study indicate that momentary levels of FOWG are associated with subsequent adaptive exercise episodes, while higher overall levels of maladaptive exercise were associated with higher levels of FOWG. Future treatments should place a greater emphasis on reducing the frequency of maladaptive exercise by providing strategies for reducing FOWG. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level IV: Evidence obtained from multiple time series analysis such as case studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Loss-of-control (LOC) eating, the subjective feeling of being unable to control what or how much is being consumed, is common. The purpose of this review was to examine the relationships among LOC eating, cardiometabolic health, and weight management intervention outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS In youth and adults, LOC eating is associated with and predictive of psychological symptoms, high weight, and worsened cardiometabolic health. While LOC eating pre-intervention does not appear to impact outcomes, LOC eating during or following is associated with worsened outcomes from behavioral and surgical weight management interventions. When individuals are undergoing weight management interventions, it may be important to regularly assess for LOC eating. There is limited research on the examined relationships in diverse populations (e.g., males, individuals of a lower socio-economic status, racial/ethnic minority groups). Future research should examine these relationships across the lifespan in diverse populations, with a focus on how these relationships can be impacted through targeted interventions.

Abstract
Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a self-report method that involves intensive longitudinal assessment of behavior and environmental conditions during everyday activities. EMA has been used extensively in health and clinical psychology to investigate a variety of health behaviors, including substance use, eating, medication adherence, sleep, and physical activity. However, it has not been widely implemented in behavior analytic research. This is likely an example of the empirically based skepticism with which behavioral scientists view self-report measures. We reviewed studies comparing electronic, mobile EMA (mEMA) to more objective measures of health behavior to explore the validity of mEMA as a measurement tool, and to identify procedures and factors that may promote the accuracy of mEMA. We identified 32 studies that compared mEMA to more objective measures of health behavior or environmental events (e.g., biochemical measures or automated devices such as accelerometers). Results showed that the correspondence rates varied considerably across individuals, behavior, and studies (agreement rates ranged from 1.8%-100%), and no unifying variables could be identified across the studies that found high correspondence. The findings suggest that mEMA can be an accurate measurement tool, but further research should be conducted to identify procedures and variables that promote accurate responding.

Abstract
Orthorexia nervosa, the pathological obsession with eating healthy, shares risks and significant comorbidity with other mental disorders. Based on a behavioral conceptualization of the overlap, emotion regulation, attachment style, and anxious-depressive-stress symptomatology are prominent but insufficiently researched endophenotypes for orthorexia nervosa. This study aimed at identifying ways in which difficulties in emotion regulation and attachment-related anxiety and avoidance become apparent in orthorexia nervosa and healthy orthorexia. Additionally, the moderating role of anxious, depressive, and stress symptoms was explored. A convenience sample of 399 adults (266 women) completed questionnaires to measure orthorexia nervosa and healthy orthorexia, difficulties in emotion regulation, partnership-related bond, and anxious-depressive-stress symptomatology. The healthy orthorexia subscale was negatively associated with lack of emotional awareness but no other subscale of difficulties in emotion regulation or attachment-related anxiety and avoidance. Orthorexia nervosa scores were positively linked to difficulties in emotion regulation as well as attachment-related anxiety and avoidance. Multiple linear regression indicated non-acceptance of emotional responses and impulse control difficulties to be the strongest predictors for orthorexia nervosa. Both subscales also mediated the effects of attachment style on orthorexia nervosa with anxious-depressive-stress symptomatology moderating some of these effects. Individuals with higher orthorexia nervosa tendencies showed difficulties in emotion regulation, a common feature also of affective and eating disorders. Improvement in understanding the psychological features of orthorexia nervosa can enable a better differentiation from other disorders, advances in the development of treatment approaches and treatment planning, and outlines directions for future research on mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The possible role of abnormal disgust processing in the development and course of anorexia nervosa (AN) has been emphasized in theoretical models and research. However, disgust toward external stimuli and self-disgust have not yet been investigated together in a clinical sample of AN patients. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to measure these constructs and examine their role in shaping eating pathology in AN patients and healthy controls (HCs), considering comorbid depressive and anxiety psychopathology. The study also aimed at testing the possible mediational roles of both disgust types in the associations between comorbid psychopathology and eating disorders (EDs) characteristics. METHOD Altogether, 63 inpatients with AN and 57 HCs partook in the study. Participants completed the Eating Disorder Inventory-3, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory-II, Disgust Scale-Revised and Self-Disgust Scale. RESULTS AN patients manifested higher self-disgust and disgust sensitivity than HCs. In addition, self-disgust predicted the severity of EDs characteristics and mediated the links of depressive symptoms and trait anxiety with EDs characteristics in both groups. DISCUSSION Our findings imply the putative role of self-disgust in the development of EDs psychopathology in HCs and in its maintenance in AN patients.
