Abstract
The interplay between nutrition and skin health provides a crucial lens for understanding, diagnosing, and managing eating disorders (EDs) such as anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge-eating disorder (BED). This review explores the dermatological manifestations resulting from the nutritional deficiencies commonly associated with EDs, including conditions like hair loss, xerosis, and brittle nails. These changes in the skin and its appendages often reflect deeper systemic dysfunctions, such as deficiencies in essential micronutrients (zinc, iron, and vitamins A and C), hormonal imbalances, and electrolyte disturbances. Recognizing these dermatological signs as diagnostic tools is vital for the early identification and intervention of EDs. By integrating dermatological observations with psychiatric and nutritional care, a holistic, multidisciplinary approach can be developed to address both the physical and psychological complexities of EDs. This review highlights the critical role of these skin-related markers in promoting timely diagnosis and effective treatment. To examine the relationship between specific nutrients and dermatological manifestations in EDs, a systematic review of three electronic databases-PubMed, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate-was conducted. The findings underline the importance of early recognition of these skin symptoms for effective management. Collaborative care involving dermatologists, psychiatrists, and nutritionists is essential for diagnosing and treating EDs. Such integrated efforts ensure a comprehensive approach to these multifaceted conditions, ultimately improving patient outcomes and enhancing overall care.

Abstract
In dry skin (DS), skin-barrier function is easily disturbed and moisturizing factors in the stratum corneum are reduced. Despite being a common condition, DS is often overlooked in patients with advanced age or comorbid diseases. In September 2022, specialists in dermatology and skin care met to discuss unmet needs and management of patients with DS with existing medical conditions or DS induced by ongoing pharmacological treatments. There was consensus about the need to improve the current understanding and management of DS in patients with comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, radiodermatitis, and photodamaged skin. Clinical guidance related to optimal treatment of DS in patients with advanced age or comorbid diseases is needed. Dexpanthenol-containing emollients have been shown to provide rapid relief from the symptoms and clinical signs of skin inflammation and are well-tolerated and effective in terms of moisturizing and soothing DS and maintaining skin-barrier function. Thus, dexpanthenol-containing emollients may play an important role in future management of DS. Further research is needed to elucidate the efficacy of dexpanthenol across the spectrum of DS, irrespective of comorbidity status or age.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is an unmet need for effective topical therapies for patients with uremic xerosis and chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP). The long-term efficacy and tolerability of an emollient containing glycerol 15% and paraffin 10% (V0034CR) was evaluated in a phase 3 study. METHODS In this randomized, double-blind, two-parallel group, vehicle-controlled study, patients with moderate-to-severe uremic xerosis were randomized to once-daily application of V0034CR or vehicle control for 28 days (period I). This was followed by a treatment-free period of ≤ 21 days (period II), then all patients received open-label treatment with V0034CR for ≥ 84 days (period III). Outcomes included treatment response at the end of period I (El Gammal's xerosis severity score), instrumental measures of scaling (D-Squame technique), time to relapse during period II, rate of recurrence during period III, pruritus severity over time, patient acceptability, and adverse events (AEs). RESULTS The intent-to-treat population comprised 235 patients randomized to V0034CR (n = 118) or vehicle control (n = 117) during period I. Treatment response at the end of period I was achieved by 71 patients (60.2%) in the V0034CR group versus 48 (41.0%) with vehicle control (p = 0.0041). This coincided with greater reductions in the total surface area of squames (p = 0.001 vs vehicle control). Xerosis relapsed progressively without treatment in period II; however, remission was durable under maintenance therapy in period III. Improvements in pruritus severity were comparable between V0034CR and vehicle control, suggesting that the antipruritic effect of V0034CR was mainly exerted by its oil-in-water emulsion base. V0034CR had high patient acceptability and was well tolerated; the most common treatment-related AEs were irritation or erythema (2.1%), exacerbated pruritus (1.3%), and vesicles at the application site (0.9%). CONCLUSION These data support the use of V0034CR, with its hydrating and occlusive properties, for the long-term management of patients with moderate-to-severe uremic xerosis and CKD-aP. Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The genus Wikstroemia has been extensively utilized in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the management of conditions such as coughs, edema, arthritis, and bronchitis. Studies have indicated that the crude extracts of Wikstroemia exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, anti-aging, skin psoriasis, anti-cancer, and antiviral properties. In addition, these extracts are known to contain bioactive substances, including flavonoids, coumarins, and lignans. However, few studies have investigated the anti-inflammatory or anti-allergic activities of Wikstroemia trichotoma (Thunb.) Makino against atopic dermatitis (AD). AIM OF THE STUDY The study aimed to explore the potential of a 95% ethanol extract of W. trichotoma (WTE) on the dysfunction of skin barrier and immune system, which are primary symptoms of AD, in 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced SKH-1 hairless mice and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)/ionomycin or immunoglobulin E (IgE) + 2,4-dinitrophenylated bovine serum albumin (DNP-BSA) stimulated rat basophilic leukemia cell line (RBL-2H3). Furthermore, we sought to identify the chemical contents of WTE using high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with a photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA). MATERIALS AND METHODS An in vitro study was conducted using RBL-2H3 cells stimulated with PMA/ionomycin or IgE + DNP-BSA to assess the inhibitory effects of WTE on mast cell degranulation and interleukin-4 (IL-4) mRNA expression levels. For the in vivo study, AD was induced in SKH-1 hairless mice by applying 1% DNCB to the dorsal skin daily for 7 days. Subsequently, 0.1% DNCB solution was applied on alternate days, and mice were orally administered WTE (at 30 or 100 mg/kg/day) dissolved in 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) daily for 2 weeks. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration, skin pH, and total serum IgE levels were measured. RESULTS In DNCB-stimulated SKH-1 hairless mice, WTE administration significantly improved AD symptoms and ameliorated dorsal skin inflammation. Oral administration of WTE led to a significant decrease in skin thickness, infiltration of mast cells, and level of total serum IgE, thus restoring skin barrier function in the DNCB-induced skin lesions. In addition, WTE inhibited β-hexosaminidase release and reduced IL-4 mRNA levels in RBL-2H3 cells. Chemical profile analysis of WTE confirmed the presence of three phenolic compounds, viz. chlorogenic acid, miconioside B, and matteucinol-7-O-β-apiofuranosyl (1 → 6)-β-glucopyranoside. CONCLUSIONS WTE ameliorates AD symptoms by modulating in the skin barrier and immune system dysfunction. This suggests that W. trichotoma extract may offer therapeutic benefits for managing AD.

Abstract
Skin disorders among individuals receiving palliative care may be associated with the primary condition or underlying comorbidities and patients may experience pruritus, discomfort or pain. Common conditions include xerosis, pressure ulcers, intertrigo, superficial fungal infections, telogen effluvium, pruritus, herpes zoster, eczematous disorders and edema. During end-of-life care, there is reduced skin perfusion and metabolism hence leading to susceptibility to infection, pressure and injury. Other factors affecting the skin include limited mobility, nutritional deficits and immunosuppression. Although treatment strategies for each skin condition are usually aligned with standard protocols, considerations among these patients include limited life-expectancies, potential treatment burden, drug-drug interactions as well as comfort-directed rather than cure-directed therapy. For patients with xerosis cutis, the regular use of moisturisers is recommended. The management and prevention of pressure ulcers include the strategies of skin assessment and care, pressure redistribution, nutrition and hydration and ulcer care. Superficial fungal infections require treatment with appropriate topical and/or systemic antifungals while antivirals and adjunctive treatment can be prescribed for herpes zoster. Treatment and symptom control of skin disorders in this population can improve quality of life and patients' comfort level.

Abstract
AIM Skin barrier dysfunction can trigger various skin disorders in older adults. Skin barrier assessment is essential for nurses and caregivers to prevent skin disorders; however, the evidence available for clinical assessment is limited. This systematic review aimed to clarify the risk factors of skin barrier dysfunction in older adults. METHODS This review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The four databases were searched using multiple terms related to "aged" and "skin barrier." The search was initially run on April 19, 2023, and rerun on October 12, 2023. Peer-reviewed quantitative studies in English were included, with no publication time limit being set. Two reviewers assessed the risk of bias in a blinded and independent manner using JBI tools. Owing to the heterogeneity of the results, a narrative synthesis was performed. RESULTS Among the database-identified 4833 studies, 20 studies were included. The extracted factors were categorized as demographic characteristics, functional characteristics, chronic diseases, nutritional status, skin condition, and environmental factors. However, owing to high risk of bias and inconsistent results across studies, only chronic kidney disease and dry skin were considered risk factors for skin barrier dysfunction in older adults. CONCLUSIONS Assessment of chronic kidney disease and dry skin in daily skin care may guide the development of personalized skincare programs to maintain skin integrity in older adults. Furthermore, cohort studies that consider confounding factors and the reliability of measurements are needed for an in-depth investigation into skin barrier dysfunction and more risk factors.

Abstract
Dissolvable microneedles (DMNs), fabricated from biocompatible materials that dissolve in both water and skin have gained popularity in dermatology. However, limited research exists on their application in compromised skin conditions. This study compares the hyaluronic acid-based DMNs penetration, formation of microchannels, dissolution, and diffusion kinetics in intact, barrier-disrupted (tape stripped), and dry (acetone-treated) porcine ear skin ex vivo. After DMNs application, comprehensive investigations including dermoscopy, stereomicroscope, skin hydration, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), optical coherence tomography (OCT), reflectance confocal laser scanning microscopy (RCLSM), confocal Raman micro-spectroscopy (CRM), two-photon tomography combined with fluorescence lifetime imaging (TPT-FLIM), histology, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were conducted. The 400 µm long DMNs successfully penetrated the skin to depths of ≈200 µm for dry skin and ≈200-290 µm for barrier-disrupted skin. Although DMNs fully inserted into all skin conditions, their dissolution rates were high in barrier-disrupted and low in dry skin, as observed through stereomicroscopy and TPT-FLIM. The dissolved polymer exhibited a more significant expansion in barrier-disrupted skin compared to intact skin, with the smallest increase observed in dry skin. Elevated TEWL and reduced skin hydration levels were evident in barrier-disrupted and dry skins compared to intact skin. OCT and RCLSM revealed noticeable skin indentation and pronounced microchannel areas, particularly in barrier-disrupted and dry skin. Additional confirmation of DMN effects on the skin and substance dissolution was obtained through histology, SEM, and CRM techniques. This study highlights the impact of skin condition on DMN effectiveness, emphasizing the importance of considering dissolvability and dissolution rates of needle materials, primarily composed of hyaluronic acid, for optimizing DMN-based drug delivery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The skin is the largest organ in the human body, not only resisting the invasion of harmful substances, but also preventing the loss of moisture and nutrients. Maintaining skin homeostasis is a prerequisite for the proper functioning of the body. Any damage to the skin can lead to a decrease in local homeostasis, such as ultraviolet radiation, seasonal changes, and air pollution, which can damage the skin tissue and affect the function of the skin barrier. OBJECTIVE This article reviews the maintenance mechanism and influencing factors of skin homeostasis and the symptoms of homeostasis imbalance. METHODS We searched for articles published between 1990 and 2022 in English and Chinese using PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, and other databases in the subject area of dermatology, using the following search terms in various combinations: "skin homeostasis," "skin barrier," and "unstable skin." Based on our results, we further refined our search criteria to include a series of common skin problems caused by the destruction of skin homeostasis and its treatments. Limitations include the lack of research on dermatological and cosmetic problems triggered by the disruption of skin homeostasis. RESULTS This study describes the neuroendocrine-immune system, skin barrier structure, and skin metabolic system that maintain skin homeostasis. In addition, we discuss several common symptoms that occur when skin homeostasis is out of balance, such as dryness, redness, acne, sensitivity, and aging, and explain the mechanism of these symptoms. CONCLUSION This article provides an update and review for students and practitioners, and provides a theoretical basis for the development of skin care products for the maintenance and repair of skin homeostasis.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to describe types and frequencies of skin care interventions and products provided in institutional long-term care. MATERIALS AND METHODS Baseline data from a cluster randomized controlled trial conducted in nursing homes in Berlin, Germany was collected before randomization. Numbers, proportions and frequencies of washing, showering and bathing, and the application of leave-on products were calculated. Product labels were iteratively and inductively categorized into overarching terms and concepts. RESULTS A total of n = 314 residents participated in the study. In the majority, washing of the whole body was done once daily, and showering was performed once per week or more rarely. The majority received leave-on products daily on the face and once per week on the whole body. Most of the skin care interventions were delivered by nurses. There was marked heterogeneity in terms of product names, whereas the product names reveal little about the ingredients or composition. CONCLUSION Personal hygiene and cleansing interventions are major parts of clinical practice in long-term care. Daily washing is a standard practice at the moment. In contrast, leave-on products are used infrequently. To what extent the provided care promotes skin integrity is unclear. Due to the heterogeneity and partly misleading labels of skin care products, informed decision making is difficult to implement at present. CLINICALTRIALS GOV IDENTIFIER NCT03824886.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Skin barrier disruption is a significant problem of the older population in an aging society. It is characterized by increased transepidermal water loss and decreased skin water content, and particulate matter (PM) is a social issue that can contribute to the exacerbation of skin inflammation. Thus, addressing this problem is urgent. METHODS Skin barrier-disrupted mouse models were induced by two methods using acetone application or tape-stripping. This study investigated the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of the Siegesbeckia herba extract (SHE) on PM-induced changes in skin barrier-disrupted mouse models. To examine changes in skin water content, inflammatory cytokines, and keratinocyte differentiation markers, mouse models were treated with vehicle 100 μL, PM10 100 μL (100 μg/mL), SHE 100 μL, or PM10 100 μL (100 μg/mL) plus SHE 100 μL. RESULTS SHE preserved skin hydration in the skin barrier-disrupted mouse models regardless of the presence of PM10 . SHE also inhibited the upregulation of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α and normalized the downregulation of keratinocyte differentiation markers against PM10 in skin barrier-disrupted mouse models. CONCLUSIONS This study elucidated the therapeutic effects of SHE against PM10 in skin barrier-disrupted mouse models.

Abstract
Background and Aims Skin aging is associated with dry skin and a decrease of the strength of the dermoepidermal adhesion, which increases the risk for lacerations (skin tears). Application of leave-on products improves dry skin and seems to reduce skin tear incidence. The aim of this study was to measure the effects of a humectant containing leave-on product on the strength of the dermoepidermal junction in older adult participants with dry skin. Methods A randomized controlled trial using a split body design was conducted. One forearm was randomly selected and treated with a lipophilic leave-on product containing 5% urea for 8 weeks. The other forearm was the control. The parameters stratum corneum hydration (SCH), transepidermal water loss, pH, roughness, epidermal thickness and skin stiffness were measured at the baseline, Weeks 4 and 8. At Week 8, suction blisters were created and time to blistering was measured. Blister roofs and interstitial fluid were analyzed for Interleukin-1α, 6 and 8. Results Twelve participants were included. After 8 weeks treatment, SCH was higher (median difference 11.6 AU), and the overall dry skin score (median difference -1) and median roughness (Rz difference -12.2 µm) were lower compared to the control arms. The median group difference for Interleukin-1α was -452 fg/µg total protein (TP) in the blister roofs and -2.2 fg/µg TP in the blister fluids. The median time to blister formation was 7.7 min higher compared to the control arms. Conclusion The regular application of humectant containing leave-on products improves dry skin and seems to lower inflammation and contribute to the strengthening of the dermoepidermal adhesion. This partly explains how the use of topical leave-on products helps to prevent skin tears.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Few studies are available on the epidemiology of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in Germany. The aim of this study was to estimate this prevalence based on different case definitions. METHODS Statutory health insurance (SHI) data were examined (2017 to 2019). Prevalence was analyzed and validated using three different case definitions: (1) At least one inpatient or outpatient diagnosis within one year, (2) additionally at least two outpatient diagnoses within one year, (3) additionally within three years. RESULTS The administrative prevalence of psoriasis including psoriatic arthritis ranged from 1.90% to 2.51%. For all case definitions, the prevalence increased with age, decreasing from the age of 70 with psoriasis and from the age of 65 with psoriatic arthritis. Males were more likely to be affected at an older age (p <0.0001), while in the under-20 age group, more girls were affected (p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS Psoriasis is a common skin disease in Germany. The internal diagnoses validation showed that in future studies with claims data, the narrow and broad criteria should be used to identify patients with psoriasis, depending on the research question.

Abstract
Given that particulate matter (PM) has an established role in inducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and skin aging, it is plausible that PM could exacerbate inflammatory skin conditions such as xerosis. Xerosis represents a significant dermatological concern among older adults within aging populations. We conducted an investigation into the efficacy of antioxidants, such as dieckol, punicalagin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and resveratrol, against PM10 in a skin barrier-disrupted mouse model. A skin barrier-disrupted mouse model was induced by tape stripping. This study investigated the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of antioxidants on PM-induced changes using the skin barrier-disrupted mouse model. Tape strips were attached to the back of 7-week-old nude mice and removed quickly. To investigate variations in skin hydration, levels of inflammatory cytokines, and indicators of keratinocyte differentiation, mice underwent treatment with several compounds: a control vehicle (100 μL), PM10 100 μL (100 μg/mL), PM10 100 μL (100 μg/mL) with antioxidants 100 μL (Punicalagin 5 μM, Dieckol 5 μM, EGCG 1 μM, resveratol 1 μM) for 1 week. To assess their effects, different analysis were conducted using measurements of skin moisture, real-time polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detecting inflammatory cytokines, and immunofluorescence staining to identify markers of keratinocyte differentiation. While PM10 decreased water content in disrupted skin, all antioxidants preserved skin hydration in the skin barrier-disrupted mice, regardless of the presence of PM10. All antioxidants also inhibited the upregulation of inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha and normalized the downregulation of keratinocyte differentiation markers against PM10 in skin barrier-disrupted mice. This study elucidated the protective effects of antioxidants-namely, punicalagin, dieckol, EGCG, and resveratrol-in mitigating the impact of PM10 on skin barrier integrity and inflammation in a disrupted skin barrier mouse model, highlighting their potential utility in dermatological treatments.

ZusammenfassungHintergrund und ZielsetzungEs gibt nur wenige Studien zur Epidemiologie der Psoriasis und Psoriasis‐Arthritis in Deutschland. Ziel dieser Studie war es, diese Prävalenz anhand verschiedener Falldefinitionen zu schätzen.MethodenEs wurden Daten der Gesetzlichen Krankenversicherung (GKV) untersucht (2017 bis 2019). Die Prävalenz wurde anhand von drei verschiedenen Falldefinitionen analysiert und validiert: (1) mindestens eine stationäre oder ambulante Diagnose innerhalb eines Jahres (2) mindestens zwei ambulante Diagnosen innerhalb eines Jahres (3) zusätzlich innerhalb von drei Jahren.ErgebnisseDie administrative Prävalenz der Psoriasis inklusive Psoriasis‐Arthritis lag zwischen 1,90% und 2,51%. Bei allen Falldefinitionen nahm die Prävalenz mit dem Alter zu, wobei sie bei der Psoriasis ab einem Alter von 70 Jahren und bei der Psoriasis‐Arthritis ab einem Alter von 65 Jahren sank. Männer waren im höheren Alter häufiger betroffen (p <0,0001), während in der Altersgruppe der unter 20‐Jährigen mehr Mädchen betroffen waren (p = 0,04).SchlussfolgerungDie Psoriasis ist eine häufige Hauterkrankung in Deutschland. Die interne Diagnosenvalidierung hat gezeigt, dass in zukünftigen Studien mit GKV‐Routinedaten, je nach Fragestellung, die engen oder weiten Kriterien zur Identifizierung von Patienten mit Psoriasis verwendet werden sollten.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyaluronic acid (HA) is mainly used to treat xerosis. It also exerts wound-healing, moisturizing, and antiaging effects. Although HA is considered an effective and safe ingredient in cosmetics, there is a constant demand for a more money-saving and effective formulation. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel hydrogel-based moisturizer containing HA cross-linked with silicone polymers, produced solely through irradiation without the use of cross-linking agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS A safety study enrolled 30 participants with healthy skin to perform patch and photopatch tests while recording adverse events. For the efficacy study, 30 participants with xerosis were compared before and after using the novel hydrogel, evaluating the cutaneous barrier function, xerosis severity scale (XSS) score, participant's satisfaction, and Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA). Furthermore, the efficacy of the novel hydrogel-based moisturizer was evaluated by comparing it with a conventional moisturizer, Physiogel, in another 30 participants with xerosis. RESULTS In the safety study, no serious adverse events were observed. In the efficacy study before and after use, skin hydration and skin surface lipid increased (p < 0.05) whereas the XSS scores decreased (p < 0.05) with time. In the comparative efficacy study with Physiogel, skin hydration increased whereas the XSS scores decreased (p < 0.05) over time in both groups. Furthermore, IGA improved in 100% of participants in both groups. Also, 100% and 93% of participants were satisfied with the novel hydrogel-based moisturizer and Physiogel, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The novel hydrogel-based moisturizer proved to be safe and effective for xerosis, showing comparable results to the conventional moisturizer.

Abstract
Methotrexate is a familiar chemotherapeutic preferred in a wide range of clinical fields such as leukemia, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, neoplastic and autoimmune disorders. However, methotrexate therapy has limitations as it causes severe side effects from which liver damage is the most important one. Several antioxidant compounds have been studied against methotrexate related liver toxicity, but dexpanthenol has not been experienced. Vitamin B5-derived dexpanthenol is a usual therapeutic having a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the ameliorating effect of dexpanthenol against methotrexate-induced hepatotoxicity. We performed our experiments on Wistar albino rats divided randomly into four groups involving control, dexphantenol, dexpanthenol + methotrexate and methotrexate applied animals. After this experimental work on rats, for the first time, we showed dexpanthenol improvement effect on ROS-caused hepatotoxicity initiated by methotrexate administration in terms of liver tissue antioxidant/oxidant enzymes, liver function tests, and histological changes. We suggest that dexpanthenol might be applied during methotrexate treatment in order to reduce the liver toxicity. However, further studies are needed to find out the optimal dose regimen and to understand the mechanism of action.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify possible factors associated with different severities of xerosis cutis and to describe possible associations between (skin) care dependency and application of moisturizers. DESIGN Cross-sectional study using baseline data from a cluster-randomized controlled trial. Demographic and health characteristics, skin physiological measurements, functional abilities and application of moisturizers were compared between the participants with mild and severe dry skin. Frequency of moisturization were also compared based on the participants' skin care dependency. RESULTS The more distal the body area, the more severe xerosis were observed. There were no or minor differences between the groups, except for the stratum corneum hydration and skin surface pH. Participants with severe xerosis received moisturizers less often. Skin care dependent residents received moisturizers frequently. CONCLUSION There is under-application regarding xerosis cutis treatment in long-term care. Skin care provided by nurses, in adequate frequencies, might be helpful compared to skin care performed by the residents themselves.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Xerosis cutis in older adults is a geriatric public health issue that severely affects healthy aging, associated with adverse outcomes and increased nursing burden. Skin care plays a significant role in the management of xerosis cutis. AIM To assess the pooled prevalence and interventions of xerosis cutis among older adults. METHODS We searched ten databases systematically from inception to August 29, 2023. We estimated pooled prevalence of xerosis cutis using Stata 15.0. RESULTS 28 articles were included in this review. The pooled prevalence of xerosis cutis was 53 %(95 %CI:36-69 %). We found the prevalence of xerosis cutis was highest in nursing homes and developed countries. The prevalence of xerosis cutis was similar in males and females. The prevalence of mild xerosis cutis and xerosis cutis at lower limbs was relatively high. Regular use of humectant-containing leave-on skin care products and structured skin care regimens were helpful in alleviating xerosis cutis. CONCLUSION Older adults are at high risk for xerosis cutis. The research provides health professionals with a basic framework for the prevention and management of xerosis cutis.

Abstract
Recent advances in molecular and biochemical processes relevant to the skincare field have led to the development of novel ingredients based on antioxidants that can improve skin health and youthfulness. Considering the plethora of such antioxidants and the many implications for the skin's appearance, this review focuses on describing the critical aspects of antioxidants, including cosmetic functions, intracellular mechanisms and challenges. In particular, specialized substances are suggested for the treatment of each skin condition, such as skin ageing, skin dehydration and skin hyperpigmentation, which treatments can maximize effectiveness and avoid side effects during skin care processes. In addition, this review proposes advanced strategies that either already exists in the cosmetic market or should be developed to improve and optimize cosmetic' beneficial effects.

Abstract
Ceramides are epidermal lipids important for normal skin barrier function. Reduced Ceramide content is associated with atopic dermatitis (AD). House dust mite (HDM) has been localized in AD skin where it plays an exacerbator role. We set to examine the impact of HDM on skin integrity and the effect of three separate Ceramides (AD™, DS, Y30) on HDM-induced cutaneous damage. The effect was tested in vitro on primary human keratinocytes and ex vivo on skin explants. HDM (100 μg/mL) decreased the expression of adhesion protein E-cadherin, supra-basal (K1, K10) and basal (K5, K14) keratins and increased matrix metallopeptidase (MMP)-9 activity. The presence of Ceramide AD™ in topical cream inhibited HDM-induced E-cadherin and keratin destruction and dampened MMP-9 activity ex vivo which was not seen for the control cream or cream containing DS or Y30 Ceramides. The efficacy of Ceramide AD™ was tested in a clinical setting on moderate to very dry skin (as surrogate for environment-induced skin damage). When applied topically for 21 days, Ceramide AD™ significantly reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in patients with very dry skin compared to their TEWL baseline data. Our study demonstrates Ceramide AD™ cream to be effective in restoring skin homeostasis and barrier function in damaged skin and warrants testing in larger clinical trials for possible treatment of AD and xerosis.

Abstract
Introduction Thyroid hormone is considered one of the key regulatory hormones for skin homeostasis. Multiple organs are affected by the release of peripheral thyroid hormones (T4 and T3) further regulating various functions at a cellular level. Specifically, skin is considered an important target organ in which the thyroid hormone has a significant impact. Multiple skin diseases are associated with thyroid hormone dysregulation. However, other striking dermatologic manifestations are seen in nails and hair as well. Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid cancer can have an array of cutaneous manifestations, and we present the recent updates in this field. Methods A PubMed search was performed for updates in any new skin disease findings and treatments between 2010 and 2022. Research published in the past decade and previously known foundational skin findings associated with thyroid disease were presented in this review. Conclusion Cutaneous manifestations of thyroid disease is one of the first notable signs of thyroid hormone dysregulation. This article reviews the recent updates on the thyroid and skin interplay, and it further discusses overt visible findings and various available treatment modalities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at high risk of developing hand eczema (HE). This can be exacerbated by hygiene measures related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Using mild skin cleansers and emollients or moisturizers is central in the prevention of HE-especially with increased COVID-19 hygiene regimes. AIMS This study aimed to assess parameters important for the acceptance of a skincare concept in HCWs. METHODS In this proof-of-concept user trial, HCWs were provided ad libitum with hand wash oil and hand cream during the 6-month period, when occupationally acquired COVID-19 infections among HCWs were peaking in Germany and then surveyed about acceptance of the products using questionnaires. RESULTS Of 135 HCWs, 115 (85%) responded. Skin tolerance of the hand wash oil and the hand cream was rated very good by 63% and 52% of the 115 participants, respectively. Of the 115 participants, 58% and 57% were very satisfied with the hand wash oil and the hand cream, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Acceptance of skin cleansing and skincare products in HCWs seems influenced by parameters such as self-assessed skin tolerance and self-reported overall satisfaction. It must be assumed that products are only used as recommended if they are well-accepted. Employers might survey employees about acceptance of products using the parameters identified to adjust concepts if necessary to sustainably contribute to the prevention of HE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Xerosis is an extremely common condition, especially in the elderly population. It is the most common cause of pruritus in the older adult. Since xerosis is generally caused by a lack of epidermal lipids, the use of leave-on skin care products is the mainstay treatment. The aim of this open prospective analytical observational study was to investigate the clinical and self-reported hydrating efficacy of a moisturizer formulation containing a synergy between amino-inositol and urea (INOSIT-U 20) in patients with psoriasis and xerosis. METHODS Twenty-two patients with psoriasis successfully treated with biologic therapy, and who presented xerosis, were recruited. Each patient was instructed to apply the topical with a frequency of two applications per die on the identified skin area. Corneometry values and a VAS itch questionnaire were measured at baseline (T0) and after 28 days (T4). To evaluate the cosmetic efficacy, the volunteers also completed a self-assessment questionnaire. RESULTS Comparing Corneometry values at T0 and T4, a statistically significant increase value was observed in the area subjected to topical treatment (P<0.0001). A significant decrease in itch (P=0.001) was also observed. Moreover, the patients' ratings of the cosmetic properties of the moisturizer showed significant confirmation rates. CONCLUSIONS This study provides preliminary evidence that INOSIT-U20 provides a good hydrating effect on xerosis, further reducing self-reported itch.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare the data of conductance and capacitance measurements of facial skin hydration and to evaluate and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches. METHODS We measured skin capacitance (Corneometer® CM 825) and skin conductance (Skicon-200EX®) on 30 pre-defined facial sites of 125 Chinese women, resulting in 3750 readings per device. The data were analysed and compared, and continuous colour maps were generated on a 3D avatar for capacitance, conductance, relative difference (Δ%) and correlation (R-value) by interpolating between the individual readings and converting the values to colours. This visualization allows a better interpretation of the results. RESULTS The complexity of facial skin hydration is revealed by this approach. The similarities and discrepancies in the facial hydration maps are clearly apparent. Due to the superiority of the Skicon in measuring high hydration levels, differences in skin hydration were evident on the forehead compared with the Corneometer maps, which may be related to the more superficial measurement of the Skicon within the stratum corneum. Conversely, a greater understanding of the complexity of facial skin hydration in the nasolabial fold was obvious when using the Corneometer. The best congruence between the instruments was found at two specific but separated facial areas, one around the inner eye region and the other one on a line between the nasolabial sulcus and the oblique, lateral jaw. Interestingly, the data were not normally distributed for both instruments and they had opposite skews. All facial clusters were statistically different from each other (p < 0.001), except the cheek and jaw for the Skicon. Larger than expected percentage coefficients of variance were found for the Corneometer on some facial sites that might be explainable by differences in stratum corneum physiology and biochemistry. Corneometer values of 48 AU and Skicon values of 132 μS were taken as the cutoff for normally hydrated facial skin. CONCLUSIONS Both devices have their advantages and disadvantages suggesting that bio-instrumental measurement of skin hydration is actually more complicated than commonly thought and that the different facial zones and the use of multiple instrumentation have not been adequately considered.

Abstract
The review summarizes information about the main causes and pathogenesis of xerosis cutis as one of the conditions indicating a violation of the epidermal barrier. Xerosis cutis is a clinical sign of a decrease in the amount and/or quality of lipids and/or hydrophilic substances in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. The modern approach to the treatment of dermatoses accompanied by violations of the epidermal barrier includes basic moisturizers. Urea not only moisturizes the skin. It is involved in the regulation of barrier function and antimicrobial protection. It is a low-molecular regulator of protein synthesis in keratinocytes, such as filaggrin, loricrin, involucrin and transglutaminase 1, cathelicidin, beta-defensin-2, water and urea carrier proteins into the cell, as well as proteins that promote the synthesis of intercellular matrix lipids. The main dermatotropic pharmacological effects of urea (hydration of the epidermis, strengthening of the barrier function of the skin, keratolytic effect, increased penetration of drugs into the skin) have been used in dermatological practice for many years. External agents with urea are used to treat skin diseases accompanied by dryness and excessive keratinization, to correct the deformation of nail plates of various genesis, to facilitate the local penetration of medicines. The use of topical UrocrEM5, UrocrEM10, Uroderm ointments containing 5%, 10% and 30% urea, respectively, is effective and safe.

Abstract
Die Mamillenregion ist durch besondere anatomische Verhältnisse charakterisiert und lässt sich aus dermatologischer Perspektive in Brusthaut, Haut des Brustwarzenhofes (Areola) und Haut der Brustwarze (Papilla mammae) unterteilen. Im klinischen Zusammenhang sind die Brustwarzen häufig während der Stillzeit durch mechanische Beanspruchung, Milieuänderung mit Mazeration durch den Milchfluss sowie durch mikrobielle Erreger alteriert. Zudem besteht hier die Gefahr der Entwicklung einer Mastitis puerperalis. Außerhalb der Schwangerschaft und Stillzeit finden sich gelegentlich an der Mamillenhaut Ekzemerkrankungen, häufig bei atopischer Disposition (atopisches Mamillenekzem) oder als irritatives Kontaktekzem („joggers nipple“). Seltener werden allergische Kontaktekzeme auf Konservierungsstoffe von Topika oder Metallen (Piercings) beobachtet. Auch im Rahmen einer Skabiesinfestation wird eine Beteiligung der Mamillen, insbesondere bei Frauen, regelmäßig beobachtet. Von großer klinischer Bedeutung sind seltene, präinvasive Läsionen eines Mammakarzinoms oder der Morbus Paget der Mamille vom extramammären Typ. Durch die besonderen anatomischen Gegebenheiten ist es naheliegend, dass bei der Anwendung von Topika sich auch spezifische Penetrationsbedingungen ableiten. Experimentelle Untersuchungen an Humanhaut ex vivo legen nahe, dass in Abhängigkeit von der Molmasse und der Löslichkeit des Arzneistoffs sowie des eingesetzten Vehikelsystems eine deutliche Zunahme der kutanen Bioverfügbarkeit, insbesondere an der Brustwarze selbst durch den transpapillären Diffusionsweg, auftreten kann. Dies sollte insbesondere bei der topischen Anwendung von Arzneistoffen mit bekanntem dosisabhängigem Nebenwirkungspotenzial (z. B. Glukokortikoiden) beachtet werden. Allerdings fehlt dafür bisher eine klinische Evidenz.

METHOD this is an integrative review carried out in the MEDLINE, CINAHL, LILACS, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Web of Science and SciELO databases. The search was conducted in a paired manner, constituting a sample of 17 studies categorized according to the types of skin lesions and preventive measures. RESULTS the main types of skin lesions related to mask use were stage 1 pressure ulcers, acne and cutaneous depression. Regarding the use of glasses and face shields, the most frequent were stage 1 and 2 pressure ulcers. Xerosis and irritant contact dermatitis occurred due to using gloves and protective clothing, respectively. The main preventive measures recommended were using hydrocolloid or foam dressing in the pressure regions, moisturizers and emollients. CONCLUSION a considerable number of skin lesions associated with using the equipment were noticed, and the data obtained can guide the professionals in identifying risks and promoting preventive measures to avoid their occurrence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dry skin can trigger eczema that affects >10% of the US population. Dressing films have been developed to improve diseased skin, but there is limited knowledge about their effects, especially for dry skin-related symptoms. We developed an electrospinning method that creates a coating film, called a fine fiber (FF) film, characterized by the production of a transparent, thin, flexible, and adherent membrane on the skin surface. OBJECTIVE The aim of this pilot study was to examine the effects of the FF film on dry skin. METHODS Three treatments (lotion only, lotion with the FF film, and lotion with an alternative film) were designed to treat subjects with rough skin on their lower legs. Twenty-four females were enrolled and used either a water-based lotion U or a petrolatum-based lotion P and the FF film for 2 weeks followed by a regression phase for 1 week. Skin hydration and roughness scores were assessed as were the subjects' perceptions of the effects. RESULTS When the FF film was applied with lotion U, skin hydration was significantly improved even after 1 week, accompanied by a significant improvement of skin roughness and an increase in skin hydration by the end of the regression phase. An evaluation of moisture permeability suggested that the FF film, especially with lotion U, performed as a semipermeable membrane with optimal moisture healing effects on dry skin. CONCLUSION The FF film together with a water-based lotion is a promising treatment to quickly improve dry skin conditions.

Resumen Objetivo identificar que evidencia científica hay sobre los tipos de lesiones cutáneas provocadas por el uso de Equipos de Protección Individual en los profesionales sanitarios durante la pandemia del COVID-19 y verificar las medidas de prevención recomendadas. Método se trata de una revisión integradora realizada en las bases de datos MEDLINE, CINAHL, LILACS, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Web of Science y la biblioteca electrónica SciELO. La búsqueda se realizó de forma pareada, la muestra estuvo conformada por 17 estudios categorizados según los tipos de lesiones cutáneas y medidas preventivas. Resultados los principales tipos de lesiones cutáneas relacionadas con el uso de mascarillas fueron las lesiones por presión estadio 1, el acné y la depresión cutánea. En cuanto al uso de gafas y pantalla facial, las más frecuentes fueron las lesiones por presión estadios 1 y 2. Se detectó xerosis y dermatitis irritante de contacto por el uso de guantes y ropa de protección, respectivamente. Las principales medidas preventivas recomendadas fueron el uso de apósitos de hidrocoloide o espuma en las regiones de presión, humectantes y emolientes. Conclusión hubo un número considerable de lesiones cutáneas asociadas al uso de equipos y los datos obtenidos pueden orientar a los profesionales para que identifiquen los riesgos y promuevan medidas preventivas para evitar su aparición.

Abstract
Background Xerosis cutis or dry skin is a highly prevalent dermatological disorder especially in the elderly and in patients with underlying health conditions. In the past decades, numerous molecular markers have been investigated for their association with the occurrence or severity of skin dryness. The aim of this review was to summarize the molecular markers used in xerosis cutis research and to describe possible associations with different dry skin etiologies. Methods We conducted a systematic review of molecular markers of xerosis cutis caused by internal or systemic changes. References published between 1990 and September 2020 were searched using ‘MEDLINE’, ‘EMBASE’ and ‘Biological abstracts’ databases. Study results were summarized and analyzed descriptively. The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO database (CRD42020214173). Results A total of 21 study reports describing 72 molecules were identified including lipids, natural moisturizing factors (NMFs), proteins including cytokines and metabolites or metabolic products. Most frequently reported markers were ceramides, total free fatty acids, triglycerides and selected components of NMFs. Thirty-one markers were reported only once. Although, associations of these molecular markers with skin dryness were described, reports of unclear and/or no association were also frequent for nearly every marker. Conclusion An unexpectedly high number of various molecules to quantify xerosis cutis was found. There is substantial heterogeneity regarding molecular marker selection, tissue sampling and laboratory analyses. Empirical evidence is also heterogeneous regarding possible associations with dry skin. Total free fatty acids, total ceramide, ceramide (NP), ceramide (NS), triglyceride, total free amino acids and serine seem to be relevant, but the association with dry skin is inconsistent. Although the quantification of molecular markers plays an important role in characterizing biological processes, pathogenic processes or pharmacologic responses, it is currently unclear which molecules work best in xerosis cutis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psoriasis (Pso) and atopic dermatitis (AD) are chronic skin diseases that result in significant physical and psychological impairment, financial burden, and loss of quality of life. According to previous data, there are regional differences in healthcare. OBJECTIVES The aim was to analyse the epidemiology as well as the treatment of insured people with Pso and AD in Germany in a regional comparison. METHODS Data of the insurance company Techniker Krankenkasse for the year 2019 regarding treatment prevalences as well as drug prescriptions on the regional level for all physicians were examined. RESULTS In 2019 the overall prevalence of Pso was 2.5% (about 2 million insured people in Germany) and AD was 4.2% (about 3.6 million insured people). In Pso, new guideline-compliant drugs were frequently utilised, yet systemic glucocorticosteroids (GCS) were still disproportionally prescribed. Regionally, there were pronounced disparities with higher prescription rates of the new drugs in the north and east. Insured people with AD most frequently received topical GCS (approx. 88%), of which most were class III (66%), and significantly less frequently calcineurin inhibitors (< 10%), which also conform to guidelines. Systemically, GCS were by far most commonly used (about 25% of all insured people with drug prescriptions). Dupilumab, the only long-term drug approved in 2019, was very rarely prescribed, accounting for less than 1%. Again, large regional differences similar to Pso were found. CONCLUSION Pso and AD show relevant disparities and gaps in drug care in the regional comparison despite uniform national guidelines and patient needs. The barriers to appropriate modern pharmaceuticals need to be clarified and mitigated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical studies have clarified the usefulness of moisturizers for dry skin diseases. However, few reports exist on the appropriate application of moisturizers with respect to the skin physiological functions. AIMS To clarify the optimal moisturizer application method on the basis of skin physiological functions. METHODS This study investigated the appropriate time, dose, and frequency of moisturizer application from the perspective of skin physiology. In healthy subjects, the stratum corneum water content (SCW) was compared between different moisturizer application times (immediately [≤5 min] and 90 min after bathing), doses (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/cm2 ), and frequencies (once and twice daily). Thereafter, patients with dry skin were treated with the moisturizer once or twice daily for 8 weeks at the time, and application dose was determined to be optimal for the healthy subjects; the moisturizing effect was evaluated based on the SCW, trypsin activity, and desmoglein 1 localization score in the stratum corneum. RESULTS In healthy subjects, compared to at control sites, the SCW was significantly higher at sites treated with the moisturizer immediately after bathing, with 1.0 and 2.0 mg/cm2 of the moisturizer, and with once- and twice-daily applications. In patients with dry skin, the SCW was significantly higher compared to control sites and the desmoglein 1 localization score was significantly lower after 8 weeks only when the moisturizer was applied twice daily. CONCLUSIONS Moisturizer application of ≥1.0 mg/cm2 twice daily (immediately after bathing at night and in the morning) had a moisturizing effect, as verified from the skin physiological functions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Xerosis cutis is characterized by a decreased stratum corneum (SC) hydration and an impaired skin barrier function. Urea, the most prevalent natural moisturizing factor (NMF), is currently considered the gold standard. Its efficacy can further be increased by combining urea with other NMF and skin barrier lipids (SBLs). OBJECTIVE We set out to evaluate physiological effects of a novel functional moisturizer containing 10% urea, additional NMF components, and a combination of SBLs on skin hydration and skin barrier integrity on a cellular and phenotypic level in female volunteers suffering from xerosis. METHODS Two double-blind, vehicle-controlled clinical studies were conducted. In the first study, 44 female subjects having very dry body skin applied the moisturizer or its vehicle twice daily to their volar forearms. Twenty-four hours after a single product application as well as 24 h after 2 weeks of treatment, SC hydration was measured by corneometry. Skin barrier function was assessed by transepidermal water loss 24 h and 48 h after 2 weeks of regular use. Twenty-four hours after 2 weeks of application, skin tape stripping was performed, and urea content was determined in the 3rd strip by means of high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. In the second study, 22 women with self-reported very dry skin applied the moisturizer or vehicle twice daily to their volar forearms for 2 weeks. Then, suction blister samples were obtained for gene expression analysis using RT-PCR. RESULTS Application of the actives led to significantly improved skin hydration and barrier function at all points in time. Compared to the vehicle, application of the moisturizer for 2 weeks resulted in a significant increase in SC urea content. Relative gene expression data revealed significant upregulation of genes associated with skin barrier function, hydration, differentiation, and lipid metabolism compared to the vehicle-treated area. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our data demonstrate that the functional moisturizer provides an adequate bioavailability of urea and a beneficial biophysical impact on xerotic skin. Topical treatment with a combination of urea and additional NMF as well as SBL can modify mRNA expression of important epidermal genes stimulating cellular processes and functions. The well-tolerated novel functional moisturizer stimulates molecular mechanisms involved in skin hydration and barrier function and is a profoundly effective treatment option for xerosis cutis.

Abstract
Background Sensitive skin is very common and distressing. Its diagnosis may be difficult with the tools/methods available at the moment. Aims To assess the reliability of a self‐assessment questionnaire for the diagnosis of sensitive skin, using the results of lactic acid stinging test (LAST) as a reference for the identification of subjects suffering from this condition. A further objective was to identify the questionnaire cutoff score that better discriminates between subjects with or without sensitive skin. Patients/methods Among the adult volunteers included in this observational, cross‐sectional study, both LAST‐positive subjects, who were considered as having sensitive skin (“patients”), and negative ones (“controls”) completed the questionnaire. It consisted of a part for self‐assessing and quantifying (0–10) sensitive skin and another one that included 10 items, each referring to a specific, potentially triggering stimulus. A cumulative score (questionnaire‐based skin sensitivity score, 0–10) was calculated from the sum of all items considered capable of triggering unpleasant skin sensations in real‐life experience. Results One hundred and sixty‐two subjects were enrolled, 102 patients and 60 controls; 98 subjects thought they had sensitive skin. The mean questionnaire‐based skin sensitivity score was significantly higher among patients than controls and correlated with skin sensitivity self‐assessments. A cutoff value of 3 was set for the identification of LAST‐positive subjects, with 79% accuracy. Conclusions The study self‐assessment questionnaire seems to be a reliable tool for diagnosing sensitive skin in clinical practice. These results led us to identify a numerical cutoff for detecting propensity to experience sensitive skin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Xerosis cutis is recognized as a burdensome and stressful condition of the skin, resulting in impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Therefore, it should be treated as a relevant skin disease with detailed care and treatment recommendations. METHODS This cross-sectional, exploratory study aimed to examine xerosis cutis-related burden from patient's perspective and compare it with individuals without xerosis cutis. Within-group comparisons were also performed among patients with xerosis cutis associated with atopic dermatitis (AD) or not. The second aim was to assess the effect of a routinely applied basic skin care therapy in terms of burden release. RESULTS Overall, 127 participants were included in the study. Patients with xerosis cutis reported a lower quality of life (p = .041), more dysmorphic concerns (p < .001), and higher general anxiety (p = .029) than individuals without xerosis cutis. The presence of AD was associated with lower HRQoL (p = .023), more depression (p = .008) and anxiety symptoms (p = .003), and more stigmatization experiences at baseline (p < .001). CONCLUSION Patients with xerosis cutis showed higher psychosocial burden than participants without xerosis cutis. Additionally, patients with xerosis and AD had more psychosocial impairments than patients with xerosis without AD.

Abstract
HINTERGRUND In der Primär- und Sekundärprävention von Berufsdermatosen werden Hautschutzprodukte eingesetzt, die eine präexpositionelle Schutzwirkung aufweisen sollen. Insbesondere finden sich auf dem Markt zahlreiche Produkte, die zum Einsatz bei Feuchtarbeit ausgelobt werden. Eine objektive Qualitätsbeurteilung dieser Produkte für Anwender ist auf Grund fehlender vergleichender Wirksamkeitsstudien oft nicht möglich. MATERIAL UND METHODIK In einer doppelblinden, randomisierten und kontrollierten In-vivo-Studie wurden sechs kommerzielle Hautschutzexterna in einem repetitiven Irritationsmodell untersucht. Sie wurden hinsichtlich ihrer präexpositionellen Schutzwirkung vor dem durch Natriumlaurylsulfat (SLS) induzierten irritativen Kontaktekzem mittels hautphysiologischer Methoden getestet. Es wurde ein Wirkindex anhand des transepidermalen Wasserverlustes (TEWL) gemäß des Protokolls der multizentrischen Studie des Forschungsprojektes FP 275 der Deutschen Gesetzlichen Unfallversicherung DGUV berechnet. ERGEBNISSE Die untersuchten Externa zeigten eine Schutzwirkung gegen SLS im Vergleich zum unbehandelten Kontrollfeld, wiesen allerdings signifikante Wirkunterschiede auf. Die Auswertung der Nebenparameter Corneometrie und visueller Score erbrachte ebenfalls Unterschiede zwischen den Externa. SCHLUSSFOLGERUNGEN Die zwischen den untersuchten Externa festgestellten Unterschiede hinsichtlich der Wirkgüte ermöglichten eine Einteilung der Produkte, welche als Grundlage für die Auswahl geeigneter Schutzpräparate dienen kann.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skin protection products, formerly named as barrier creams, are being used as primary and secondary prevention measures against occupational dermatoses. Many of these cosmetic products are claimed by manufacturers to be efficacious against wet work-induced skin barrier impairment if applied prior to exposure. However, results of validated and standardized in vivo efficacy tests allowing the comparison of different products are lacking. MATERIAL AND METHODS Efficacy of six skin protection products against sodium lauryl sulphate-induced irritant contact dermatitis was investigated in a double blind, randomized and controlled repetitive irritation study in healthy volunteers using skin physiological methods. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) results were used to calculate an efficacy index of protection by mathematical/statistical means according to a protocol developed in a German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV) multicenter study (research project FP 275). RESULTS All tested products had a demonstrable, protective effect against SLS compared to controls, but their relative efficacy varied significantly. Differences were also seen upon evaluation of other parameters such as corneometry and clinical irritation score (visual score). CONCLUSIONS Product ranking as a result of the established differences allows improved selection of appropriate skin protection products based on objective parameters, as compared to heterogenous product claims.

Abstract
The object of this paper is in vivo study of skin spectral-characteristics in patients with kidney failure by conventional Raman spectroscopy in near infrared region. The experimental dataset was subjected to discriminant analysis with the projection on latent structures (PLS-DA). Application of Raman spectroscopy to investigate the forearm skin in 85 adult patients with kidney failure (90 spectra) and 40 healthy adult volunteers (80 spectra) has yielded the accuracy of 0.96, sensitivity of 0.94 and specificity of 0.99 in terms of identifying the target subjects with kidney failure. The autofluorescence analysis in the near infrared region identified the patients with kidney failure among healthy volunteers of the same age group with specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy of 0.91, 0.84, and 0.88, respectively. When classifying subjects by the presence of kidney failure using the PLS-DA method, the most informative Raman spectral bands are 1315 to 1330, 1450 to 1460, 1700 to 1800 cm-1 . In general, the performed study demonstrates that for in vivo skin analysis, the conventional Raman spectroscopy can provide the basis for cost-effective and accurate detection of kidney failure and associated metabolic changes in the skin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Itch is a common symptom in the general population. Affected individuals often do not seek medical consultation and rely on Internet searches to obtain information regarding their itch. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to attain insights into common concerns of the general population regarding itch can by analysing itch-related Internet search behaviour. METHODS Google AdWords Keyword Planner was used to assess search volumes for itch-related terms in 15 European countries between September 2014 and August 2018. All identified keywords were qualitatively categorized. Itch-related terms were descriptively analysed and are shown as number of searches/100 000 inhabitants. RESULTS The search volume for the keyword 'itch' per 100 000 inhabitants was highest in Northern Europe, followed by Eastern, Central and Southern Europe. In 4/15 countries, itch was searched for more often in the autumn/winter months compared to in the spring/summer months. Most itch-related terms were related to dermatological conditions such as inflammatory skin diseases (e.g. psoriasis, atopic dermatitis), allergic or immunologic conditions (e.g. urticaria), and infectious diseases or infestations (e.g. scabies). In terms of body location, genitoanal itch dominated the searches. Symptoms and signs related to itch, possible non-dermatological aetiologies, and treatment options were also among the most searched terms. CONCLUSIONS These analyses provided for the first time insights into the search behaviour patterns related to itch across Europe. People from Northern and Eastern Europe are more likely to seek online information regarding itch. Causes for the itch, especially dermatological conditions, and genitoanal itch are the most important concerns for Internet users. This unconventional and inexpensive method identifies medical needs of people beyond the medical setting, including people who do not seek medical consultation. Accordingly, the data could be used to guide public health interventions and manage respective inhabitants' medical needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A common health condition among older persons is xerosis cutis. Topical corticosteroid treatments are -associated with side effects. There is an unmet need for her-bal treatment alternatives. Coccinia grandis, Clerodendrum inerme and Acanthus ebracteatus are used to treat skin con-ditions in Thai traditional medicine. This study aimed to investigate their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, synergistic properties as well as their cytotoxicity. METHODS -Ethanolic herbal extracts were used to perform minimal -inhibitory (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays on common skin pathogens. Synergistic anti-microbial activity was evaluated by a chequerboard assay. Antioxidant and synergistic properties were assessed by a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay. Cytotoxicity was tested on normal adult human primary epidermal keratinocytes. RESULTS All extracts showed an inhibitory effect on growth of all microorganisms tested. MIC and MBC values ranged from 0.0625 to 32 mg/mL and from 0.0625 to >256 mg/mL, respectively. A. ebracteatus extract markedly demonstrated bactericidal activity against an methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain. Additive antimicrobial activity was observed (fractional inhibitory concentration index values: 0.75-1). All extracts possessed antioxidant properties (IC50 values: 0.12-0.25 mg/L). However, antagonism was observed with paired extract combinations (combination index values: 1.025-1.455). The cell viability assay confirmed that herbal extracts were not cytotoxic. CONCLUSIONS Our results provide early findings of pharmacological activities to support a novel choice of herbal combinations as potential local skin treatment options for xerosis cutis.
