Abstract
Background: Mandibular condyle fractures in pediatric patients can lead to crippling sequelae such as ankylosis, pain and facial deformity if not managed properly. However, there is no consensus on the best approach for treating these fractures in children. Objective: This study aimed to describe the management of mandibular condyle fractures in growing patients across 14 maxillofacial departments worldwide. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study was conducted on children and adolescents aged 0 to 16 who had at least one mandibular condyle fracture. This study included patients who underwent expectant, closed, or open management and were treated over an 11-year period. Results: 180 patients had at least one mandibular condyle fracture, and 37 had a second condylar fracture. One hundred sixteen patients (65%) were males, and 64 (35%) were females (ratio 1.8:1). An expectant strategy was chosen in 51 (28%) patients, a closed treatment-stand-alone maxillomandibular fixation (MMF)-in 47 (26%), and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) was performed in 82 (46%) patients. The management varied significantly between the different departments (p < 0.0001). Significant differences were also identified between the fracture type (non-displaced, displaced or comminuted) and the management of the 180 patients with a single condylar fracture. Out of 50 non-displaced fractures, only 3 (6%) had ORIF, 25 (50%) had expectant management, and 22 (44%) had MMF. Out of 129 displaced fractures, 79 (62%) had ORIF, 25 (19%) had a soft diet, and 25 (19%) had MMF. Conclusions: Expectative management, MMF, and ORIF were all effective in treating pediatric mandibular condyle fractures, with a low incidence of complications and asymmetry.

Abstract
Background: Oral surgery involves the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases affecting the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity and encompasses a wide range of surgical interventions. The aim of this investigation was to study the characteristics and age-related diagnoses of these oral surgeries, as well as to describe the surgical procedures performed in a pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery service. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective, observational, and relational study was conducted on children and adolescents aged from 0 to 22 years who were treated in a pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery service at a children's hospital. Results: We analyzed 1311 surgical interventions (51.4% were on boys and 48.6% on girls), consisting of 24.8% soft tissue surgeries, 65.9% bone and dental tissue surgeries, and 9.3% mixed tissue surgeries. The most common pathologies were tooth eruption disorders (65.9%), followed by ankyloglossia (20.5%). The most frequent treatment was wisdom teeth extraction (31.3%). A statistically significant association (p < 0.05) was found between surgical treatments and variables such as age, sex, tissue type, and biopsy. Conclusions: This study enhances our understanding of pediatric oral surgery, emphasizing that the most common pathology is altered tooth eruption, while the most frequent surgical intervention is the extraction of wisdom teeth at different stages of development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mandibular fractures account for up to 48.8% of pediatric facial fractures; however, there are a wide range of available treatment modalities, and few studies describe trends in adverse outcomes of these injuries. This study describes fracture cause, pattern, management, and treatment outcomes in pediatric mandibular fracture patients. METHODS A retrospective review was performed of patients younger than 18 years who were evaluated for mandibular fractures at a pediatric level I trauma center between 2006 and 2021. Variables studied included demographics, cause, medical history, associated facial fractures, other associated injuries, treatments, and outcomes. RESULTS A total of 530 pediatric patients with 829 mandibular fractures were included in the analysis. Most isolated mandibular fractures were treated with physical therapy and rest ( n = 253 [47.7%]). Patients with combination fractures, specifically those involving the parasymphysis and angle, were 2.63 times more likely to undergo surgical management compared with patients with a single facial fracture ( P < 0.0001). Older age ( P < 0.001), sex ( P = 0.042), mechanism ( P = 0.008) and cause of injury ( P = 0.002), and specific fractures (eg, isolated angle [ P = 0.001]) were more associated with adverse outcomes. The odds of adverse outcomes were higher for patients treated with closed reduction and external fixation or open reduction and internal fixation compared with conservative management (OR, 1.8, 95% CI, 1.0 to 3.2; and OR, 2.1, 95% CI, 1.2 to 3.5, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Fracture type, mechanism of injury, and treatment modality in pediatric mandibular fractures are associated with distinct rates and types of adverse outcomes. Large-scale studies characterizing these injuries are critical for guiding physicians in the management of these patients. CLINICAL QUESTION/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Risk, III.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Mandibular condylar fractures in pediatric patients may exhibit distinct epidemiological characteristics attributed to their unique growth and development phase, as well as various anatomical, physiological, biomechanical, and behavioral factors that differentiate them from adults. This study aimed to investigate the demographics, injurious factors, classifications, clinical manifestations, and treatments of pediatric mandibular condylar fractures, as well as the concomitant injuries in maxillofacial and other body parts. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study analyzed the clinical data of 189 pediatric patients with mandibular condylar fractures between 2011 and 2022. Variables investigated included age, gender, timing of onset, causes, classification of condylar fracture, concomitant injuries, clinical manifestations, and treatment modalities. RESULTS A total of 189 patients, a higher proportion of boys compared to girls was observed, with the highest incidence rate in children aged 1-3 years. They occurred primarily in July, June, and September as well as on Saturdays and Sundays. The most prevalent cause of mandibular condylar fractures was falls from heights in 73 patients (38.62%). Pediatric patients exhibited a higher susceptibility to condylar head fractures. A significant majority (81.48%) of these fractures were accompanied by soft tissue injuries in the maxillofacial region, with the chin being particularly vulnerable to injury. In addition, 61.90% of pediatric patients experienced fractures in other areas of the maxillofacial region, with the mandibular symphysis being the most commonly affected site. Dental trauma predominantly occurred in the anterior region (44.97%). Notably, a substantial proportion (28.04%) of cases also presented with multiple systemic injuries. CONCLUSIONS The characteristics of pediatric mandibular condylar fractures exhibit distinct features in terms of age, gender, timing of onset, etiology, location and type, the presence of concomitant maxillofacial soft/hard tissue injuries and multiple systemic injuries, as well as clinical manifestations and treatment modalities. Therefore, clinicians should pay special attention to the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric condylar fractures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Naso-orbito-ethmoidal fractures (NOE) fractures are uncommon but critical injuries. This review aims to investigate the patient factors, procedural factors, and postoperative outcomes associated with the surgical management of NOE fractures. STUDY DESIGN PubMed and Scopus databases were systematically searched between 1993 and 2023 using the search strategy "(naso-orbito-ethmoidal OR nasoethmoid OR nasoorbitoethmoidal) AND fracture." Articles reporting clinical studies investigating the surgical management of NOE fractures were included. Articles that were duplicates, non-English, or non-full text; reported an unclear age range; reported insufficient data; and/or reported on a sample size less than 10 were excluded. Data on patient factors, procedural factors, and postoperative outcomes were extracted. RESULTS Of the 412 articles identified, 6 eligible articles (retrospective case series) representing 95 adult cases and 84 pediatric cases were included. The mean ages were 29.0 and 10.2 years, respectively. Most cases were male (65.3%; 73.9%). Motor vehicle accidents were the most common mechanism of injury (79.2% and 50.0%, respectively). Coronal incision was the most common approach. Epiphora (n = 33) and scar problems (n = 21) were the most common complications in adult and pediatric cases, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Further robust longitudinal studies with a clear description of fracture classification and surgical timing would be helpful. Gaps in knowledge include concomitant injuries, digitally-assisted applications, and risk factors for adverse outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Paediatric maxillozygomatic complex (MZC) fractures are uncommon, and there is a scarcity of data regarding their surgical treatment. The aim of this study was to analyse choices and outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for MZC fractures among 14 maxillofacial centers around the world. MATERIALS AND METHODS This multicentric retrospective observational study included patients ≤16 years of age with quadripod MZC fractures treated with ORIF from January 2011 and December 2022. The following data were collected: age, gender, dentition stage (deciduous, mixed, and permanent), cause of injury, type of fracture, surgical approach, site of osteosynthesis (infraorbital rim, zygomaticomaxillary buttress, frontozygomatic, and zygomaticotemporal sutures), material (titanium or resorbable) and number of plates used, and outcome. The minimum follow-up was 6 months. Statistical analyses were performed with Fisher's exact test or chi-squared test, as appropriate. RESULTS Sixty-four patients (mean age, 12.3 years) with quadripod MZC fractures were included. Seventy-two percent of patients received a single-point fixation. The zygomaticomaxillary buttress was the most common site for fixation, both in single-point and two-point fixation schemes, especially in combination with the frontozygomatic suture. Increasing age was associated with a higher rate of plate removal (p < .001). Postoperative complications included 5 (7.8%) cases of wound infections, 2 (3.1%) infraorbital paraesthesia, 1 (1.6%) ectropion. Residual facial asymmetry was found in 5 (7.8%) patients and was not associated with the type of fixation (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the possibility of using ORIF, even with a single point of fixation, for the treatment of displaced quadripod MZC fractures in the paediatric population. The zygomaticomaxillary buttress was the preferred site of fixation and allowed for adequate stabilization with no external scars and a low risk of tooth damage. Future prospective studies with long-term follow-up are needed to establish definitive surgical protocols and clarify the surgical decision-making.

Abstract
Introduction Traumatic facial injuries, leading to facial fractures represent a significant subset of traumatic events, with age emerging as a crucial determinant influencing both their etiology and outcomes. Understanding the age-related patterns of traumatic facial fractures is essential for developing targeted prevention and management strategies. In this context, the Appalachian tri-state area stands as an underexplored region concerning this issue, necessitating comprehensive research to elucidate the nuances of age-related traumatic facial fractures within this geographic context. Methods This retrospective study delves into the age-related patterns of traumatic facial fractures within the Appalachian tri-state area, drawing upon patient records from Cabell Huntington Hospital and Saint Mary's Medical Center spanning a five-year period. The study cohort encompasses 623 patients categorized into three age groups: individuals aged <22 years, those aged 22-65 years, and individuals over 65 years. Data analysis involves meticulous examination of mechanisms of injury, injury severity scores (ISSs), hospital length of stay, and the prevalence of surgical interventions across different age cohorts. Results Out of 623 patients, 104 (16.7%) were under 22 years old, 367 (58.9%) were between 22 and 65 years old, and 152 (24.4%) were over 65 years old. The majority were male (70%). Falls were the most common cause of facial fractures in patients over 65 (78%), while assaults were predominant in the 22-65 age group (24%), and motor vehicle collisions (MCVs) in those under 22 (34%). The median ISS and hospital stay durations were similar across age groups. 28% of patients underwent surgery, with significant variation among age groups (p<0.001): 38% for <22 years, 33% for 22-65 years, and 11% for >65 years. Mandibular fractures were more prevalent in younger patients, with rates of 12% for <22 years compared to 5.3% for >65 years. Logistic regression analysis revealed that patients aged 22-65 had 4.10 times higher odds (95% CI=2.38, 7.45, p<0.001) of undergoing surgery, while those under 22 had 5.14 times higher odds (95% CI=2.73, 10.0, p<0.001) compared to those over 65. Significant associations were found for mandibular and bilateral mandibular outcomes in patients aged 22-65 years. Discussion These findings underscore the imperative for tailored prevention strategies and age-specific treatment protocols to optimize patient outcomes. Fall prevention initiatives for the elderly and interventions addressing sports-related injuries for younger individuals are paramount. Moreover, the study highlights the necessity of specialized care protocols for elderly patients to minimize hospital stay durations and manage age-related comorbidities effectively. Moving forward, further research should address limitations, validate findings, and explore the efficacy of specific interventions, thereby paving the way for enhanced preventive measures and management strategies tailored to the diverse age cohorts affected by traumatic facial fractures in the Appalachian region.

Abstract
Introduction Maxillofacial injuries in children and adolescents always present a challenge due to the peculiar facial anatomy in children. This study aimed to determine the characteristics and pattern of traumatic maxillofacial injuries in children and adolescents reported to outpatient departments of two tertiary care health centers. Materials and Methods Present study had a retrospective design, and the hospital records of all children and adolescent patients aged between 0 and 18 years, who had undergone maxillofacial fractures and were admitted for the same to two tertiary care health centers between January 2012 and May 2022 were reviewed. Results 77 patients suffered maxillofacial trauma with 115 fractures. The leading cause of maxillofacial trauma in the study was found to be road traffic accidents (RTA) followed by falls and sports-related injuries. Maxillofacial trauma was observed more in boys than girls, with an M: F ratio of 3.8:1. Out of 77 patients in the present study, more than half (51.9%) suffered maxillofacial trauma involving the lower one-third of the face, followed by the middle third (45.5%) and upper third (2.6%). A total of 11 patients (14.2%) were treated within 24 hr of sustaining injury. The majority of the patients, (n = 68; 88.3%) underwent open reduction and rigid internal fixation (ORIF), while 9 patients (11.7%) underwent closed reduction. Conclusions Pediatric maxillofacial trauma was mainly attributed to road traffic accidents. Lower one-third of faces were more commonly affected and an increasing trend of maxillofacial trauma was observed with age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This retrospective study analysed the epidemiology of maxillofacial trauma over 22 years to assess whether there have been significant changes in the causes and characteristics of fractures in paediatric, adult and elderly populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS The following data were collected: age, sex, injury cause and mechanism, fracture site, Facial Injury Severity Scale, associated injuries, time of injury, type of treatment and length of hospital stay. The patients were analysed by age group (children [≤16 years], adults [17-60 years] and elderly [>60 years]) and divided into two time groups (group 1: 2001-2011; group 2: 2012-2022) that were compared to each other. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. RESULTS Between 01 January 2001 and 31 December 2022, 3535 patients (2690 males and 845 females, mean age 39.3 years) were admitted for facial fractures. The comparison of the two temporal periods showed a decrease in the prevalence of males (p = .02), in road traffic injuries (p < .001), and in fractures of the lower third of the face (p = .005); there were significant increases in the mean age (p < .001), prevalence of the elderly (p = .006) and in fall- and assault-related injuries (p < .001 and p = .03, respectively). Assault injuries increased only in the 17-60 age group (p = .02) while RTA-related fractures decreased in all age groups (p < .05 for all comparisons). Bicycle accidents increased significantly, with a parallel decrease in motor vehicle accidents (both p < .001). Fall-related fractures increased only in 17-60 and >60 age groups (p < .001 and p = .02, respectively). CONCLUSIONS This study shows significant changing trends in the epidemiology of maxillofacial trauma. While road traffic policies have been effective in the last years, preventive measures for falls in the elderly population and new legislative measures to prevent interpersonal violence should be advocated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM This retrospective study investigated the effect of lockdowns for Covid-19 on the rates of oro-facial trauma hospitalisations in children in Australia and the United Kingdom (UK). MATERIALS AND METHODS Hospitalisation data for children up to 19 years old for oro-facial trauma injuries (according to ICD-10-AM principal diagnosis codes) over 5 years were collected for Australian and UK children. The age-standard rate (ASR) for each age group was calculated per 100,000 population. RESULTS In the younger Australian children, there was no statistically significant change in the ASR of oro-facial trauma hospitalisations during the 'Covid year', compared to the average rate over the 3 years preceding. However, there was a significant decrease in the ASR of oro-facial trauma hospitalisations during the 'Covid year' in older Australian children (aged 10-19), and for all UK children, except for infants under one-year-old. CONCLUSIONS Reduction of the ASR of hospitalisations due to oro-facial trauma during the 'Covid year', and the implementation of lockdown measures in the two countries provides further evidence of the impact of physical activities and travel as contributing factors to oro-facial injuries in children. In addition to its role in reducing the spread of virus infections during the pandemic, the lockdown measures also resulted in a simultaneous decrease in trauma injuries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical characteristics of pediatric nasal fractures can vary depending on the child's age, social activities, and environment. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze these characteristics in different age groups. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed of a series of patients aged under 12 years who received treatment between 2013 and 2021. The initial study design involved dividing the patients into four age groups, corresponding to different developmental ages, but there were no cases in infants aged 0 to 1 year. Therefore, the patients were divided into three groups: group I, between 2 and 5; group II, between 6 and 9; and group III, between 10 and 12 years of age. The following parameters were evaluated: sex, age, etiology, fracture type and severity, and the incidence of septal injuries. RESULTS In total, 98 patients were included in this study. In group III, the ratio of boys to girls was 3.88:1, exceeding the overall ratio of 1.97:1. The most common cause varied with age: slipping down in group I, bumping accidents in group II, and sports accidents in group III. Concomitant septal injuries were present in 4.17% of patients in group I, 5.71% of patients in group II, and 28.21% of patients in group III. CONCLUSION Increasing age was accompanied by a greater tendency for male predominance and a higher prevalence of sports-related causes and septal injuries. Violence was infrequent but started to become a contributing factor during school age. These varying environmental factors across age groups can offer valuable insights into the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of pediatric nasal bone fractures.

Abstract
AIM The primary objective of this study was to analyze the patterns and etiology of maxillofacial fractures among hospitalized pediatric patients. METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on pediatric trauma cases admitted to King Saud Medical City, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2020. Data extracted from medical records was utilized to identify and establish correlations with various variables, including age, gender, trauma etiology, and the type of sustained fracture. RESULTS The study involved a total of 167 patients. The mean age of the patients was 11.79 years, with the youngest and oldest patients being 2 and 17 years old, respectively. The majority of participants (70.7%, n = 118) were male. A total of 257 fractures were identified, with the highest number (n = 173, 67.3%) occurring in the lower third of the face. CONCLUSION Road traffic accidents (RTAs) emerged as the primary cause of trauma in our study, accounting for 73% (n = 122) of cases, followed by falls at 16.8% (n = 28). All instances of polytrauma were linked to RTAs. Fractures in the lower third of the face constituted over two-thirds (67.3%, n = 173) of the total fractures observed. Among the fractures, condyle fractures were the most frequently observed (19.8%, n = 51) in our study.

Abstract
The incidence of pediatric craniofacial fractures and heterogeneity of fractures is known to increase with age. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of associated injuries (AIs) to craniofacial fractures and identify differences in patterns of and predictors for AIs in children and teenagers. A 6-year retrospective cross-sectional cohort study was designed and implemented. The study population included 397 patients aged 19 years or less diagnosed with craniofacial fracture at Helsinki University Hospital from 2013 to 2018. Boys (71.0%) and teenagers (64.7%) were predominated. Associated injuries were more common in teenagers than children. Teenagers had more often AI in 2 or more organ systems. Assault and intoxication by alcohol were observed only in teenagers and predominantly boys. A total of 27.0% of all patients sustained AIs. In 18.1%, brain injury was reported. In children, motor vehicle accident (MVA) was an independent predictor for AI. In teenagers, independent predictors for AI were female sex, isolated cranial fracture, combined cranial fracture, and high-energy trauma mechanism. Injury patterns and AI related to craniofacial fractures in the pediatric population are age-specific, requiring multidisciplinary collaboration in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of such trauma. Abstract
The oral microbiome can be influenced by many factors and its dysbiosis can have negative effects on oral and general health. The purpose of this study was to analyze the intensity of 11 periodontal pathogenic microorganisms identified in the oral cavity of a sample of children and adolescents from Oradea, Romania and to investigate the association of some variables (age, gender, body mass index, diet, and salivary pH) with the identified microorganisms. The cross-sectional study was conducted on a group of clinically healthy patients under the age of 18 years from Oradea, Romania. For the analysis of the periodontal pathogens, the micro-IDent kit was used, which determines 11 bacterial markers for periodontitis and peri-implantitis. The kit is based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Bacterial sampling was carried out according to the manufacturer's instructions. A total of 60 children (23 male, 37 female) were included in this study, and were divided into three different age categories. No statistically significant results were identified for gender. However statistically significant results were obtained for other variables. Positive results for Prevotella intermedia and Bacteroides forsythus were associated with ages between 13 and 18 years, while positive results for Capnocytophaga spp. were associated with ages between 2 and 5 years. Positive results for Prevotella intermedia, Bacteroides forsythus, Peptostreptococcus micros, Campylobacter rectus and Eikenella corodens were associated with an overweight BMI. Negative results for Prevotella intermedia and Eikenella corodens were associated with a natural diet in the first 6 months of life. Positive results for Fusobacterium nucleatum and Campylobacter rectus were associated with an acidic salivary pH. In this study, the identified periodontal pathogens were associated with age, body mass index, diet in the first 6 months of life, and salivary pH.

Abstract
The development of magnesium calcium phosphate bone cements (MCPCs) has garnered substantial attention. MCPCs are bioactive and biodegradable and have appropriate mechanical and antimicrobial properties for use in reconstructive surgery. In this study, the cement powders based on a (Ca + Mg)/P = 2 system doped with Zn2+ at 0.5 and 1.0 wt.% were obtained and investigated. After mixing with a cement liquid, the structural and phase composition, morphology, chemical structure, setting time, compressive strength, degradation behavior, solubility, antibacterial activities, and in vitro behavior of the cement materials were examined. A high compressive strength of 48 ± 5 MPa (mean ± SD) was achieved for the cement made from Zn2+ 1.0 wt.%-substituted powders. Zn2+ introduction led to antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli strains, with an inhibition zone diameter of up to 8 mm. Biological assays confirmed that the developed cement is cytocompatible and promising as a potential bone substitute in reconstructive surgery.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) in permanent dentition among patients who attended at the outpatient clinic of a Brazilian dental school, during the last 20 years, and to investigate factors associated with the severity of these injuries. Clinical records of patients who attended a specialized center for dental trauma care in Brazil presenting at least one TDI in a permanent tooth, between the years 2000 and 2019, were reviewed. The data recorded were sex, age, affected arch, etiology, number, and type of the teeth affected, and classification and severity of the TDIs. The diagnosis and classification of the TDIs were based on the guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT). The severity of each patient's injuries was defined as mild, moderate, or severe. Descriptive statistics, chi-square and multinomial regression analyses were used to evaluate the results. The significance level was set at 5%. A total of 837 clinical records were included, totaling 2357 teeth. Males were more prevalent than females. The patients' age ranged from 5 to 71 years. The most common traumas were avulsion (n=512) and uncomplicated enamel-dentin fracture (n=488). Univariate analyses showed that there was a statistically significant association between age group (p=0.004), etiology (p=0.000) and number of teeth affected (p=0.000) with severity of dental trauma. In conclusion, TDIs that occurred in Piracicaba and region are epidemiologically similar to those found worldwide, and that more severe injuries are related to age range, etiology and number of teeth affected.

Abstract
Pediatric dental emergencies can occur as a result of untreated dental caries, or can be caused by trauma or periodontal issues. The lockdown imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced the number of centers authorized to deliver dental services in Romania, with only a small number of dentists delivering dental emergency treatments. The aim of this study was to investigate the demographic characteristics of children and adolescent patients who were treated in the dental emergency department of Oradea, Romania and to compare the patients who were treated in the dental emergency department in the pre-lockdown (2019), lockdown (2020) and post-lockdown year (2021). All patients who were treated in the dental emergency department were included in the study except for adults and medical files that did not contain all relevant information. Several variables were investigated (age, gender, living environment, location of affected teeth, type of emergency). In 2019, 257 children and adolescents were treated, in 2020, 198, and in 2021, 136. Most patients were aged 7-12 years in all investigated years (2019-47.9%; 2020-50.5%; 2021-43.4%), and the most affected teeth were located in the lower posterior arch (2019-53.3%; 2020-53%; 2021-48.5%). The most frequent emergencies were pulpitis (2019-40.5%; 2020-43.9%) and acute apical periodontitis (2021-42.6%). It was observed that in 2019, patients aged between 0 and 6 years were more frequently associated with trauma (p < 0.001), and in 2019 and 2020, patients aged between 7 and 12 years were more frequently associated with periodontal emergencies (p < 0.001). In 2020, patients from rural areas were more frequently associated with pulpitis (p = 0.025), and in 2021, patients from rural areas were more frequently associated with pulpitis or acute apical periodontitis, and patients from urban areas were associated more frequently with periodontal emergencies (p = 0.042). Pediatric patients with ages between 7 and 12 years old, who lived in an urban environment were most affected. Teeth located in the lower and upper posterior dental arches were most affected, and pulpitis or acute apical periodontitis were the most common pathologies.

Abstract
Pediatric facial fractures have different clinical patterns and require different therapeutic approaches in comparison with those of facial fractures that occur among adults. The aim of this study was to describe the main clinical characteristics of pediatric facial fractures (such as fracture location, fracture pattern, treatment, complications and evolution) in a group of pediatric patients from NW Romania. This research was a retrospective study that was conducted for 10 years in a tertiary hospital for oral and maxillofacial surgery from NW Romania. A total of 142 pediatric patients were included in this study, with ages between 0 and 18 years. Mandibular (66.2%), midface (25.4%) and combined fractures (8.5%) were identified, and patients from the 13-18 years age group were more frequently affected by facial fractures (78.9%). Most of the diagnosed fractures among all three types of fractures were total fractures, and most mandibular (92.6%) and midface (80.6%) fractures were without displacement. Hematomas, lacerations and abrasions were identified as associated lesions. Patients with associated lesions were more frequently associated with combined fractures or midface fractures than mandibular fractures. The instituted treatment was, in general, orthopedic, for all three types of fractures (mandibular-86.2%; midface-91.7%; combined-66.7%). Most fractures, mandibular (96.8%), midface (100%) and combined (91.7%) fractures, had a favorable evolution. Most fractures did not present any complications at the follow-up. Pediatric facial fractures have unique patterns and must be treated with caution, considering the particularities of pediatric facial anatomy.

Abstract
(1) Background: Maxillofacial injury (MI) occurs universally, for it disregards preference for age, gender, and geographical region. The global incidence and prevalence of facial fractures rose by 39.45% and 54.39%, respectively, between the years 1990 to 2017. Projections indicate that the burden of injuries will persist in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in the next twenty years. This scoping review aims to map the literature on MI epidemiology and the economic burden on society in SSA. (2) Methods: The methodology presented by Arksey and O'Malley and extended by Levac and colleagues will be employed in the scoping review. The researcher will report the proposed review through the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review, and Meta-Analysis extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The review will include studies encompassing MI in sub-Saharan African adults 18 years and above. (3) Results: This will be presented as a thematic analysis of the data extracted from the included studies, and the Nvivo version 12 will be employed. (4) Discussion: We anticipate searching for related literature on the prevalence, incidence, risk factors, mortality, and cost associated with MI in the adult population of SSA. The conclusion from the review will assist in ascertaining research gaps, informing policy, planning, authorizing upcoming research, and prioritizing funding for injury prevention and management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Mandibular fractures are the most frequent type of pediatric facial traumatic injury, but their treatment remains controversial. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the surgical treatment and long-term outcomes of dentate mandibular fractures in children and adolescents. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients with mandibular fractures in the dentate area who were surgically treated in the period from January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2020, were included. The following data were collected: age, gender, cause and mechanism of injury, fracture site and type, associated maxillofacial fractures, the timing of surgical treatment, Facial Injury Severity Scale (FISS) score, surgical approach, number and thickness of plates, hospitalization stay and outcome. Patients were divided into three groups: deciduous (≤6 years, group A), mixed (7-12 years, group B), and permanent (13-18 years, group C) dentitions. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. RESULTS During the study 91 patients (male: female ratio, 3.8:1), 4 in group A, 12 in group B, and 75 in group C, with 65 single and 52 double fractures were included. An intraoral approach was used in 87% of patients. In group C, 90% of patients were treated with fixation schemes consistent with those suggested in the literature for adults, versus 75% in groups A and B. Median follow-up time was 20 months. No tooth germ injury or facial asymmetry was observed and only six group C patients had post-operative malocclusions. Hardware removal occurred in 22% of the patients. CONCLUSIONS This 20-year retrospective study shows that open reduction and internal fixation of pediatric dentate mandibular fractures caused no tooth germ damage or disturbances of mandibular growth in any dentition stage. Internal fixation schemes were similar to those used for adults, although it was necessary to adapt hardware size and position according to tooth and patient age.

Abstract
Background Maxillofacial fractures are a common type of injury that can result in significant morbidity and mortality. We aimed to systematically review the literature on the prevalence and causes of maxillofacial fractures in Iran to estimate the overall prevalence of maxillofacial fractures and the most common causes. Methods A systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science (WS) and Google Scholar (GS) electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant articles published up to January 2023. Studies reporting the prevalence and causes of maxillofacial fractures in Iran were included in the analysis. MOOSE guidelines were adopted for the current systematic review. No data or language restriction were applied. Risk of bias across the articles was assessed. Results A total of 32 studies comprising 35,720 patients were included in the analysis. The most common cause of maxillofacial fractures was road traffic accidents (RTAs), accounting for 68.97% of all cases, followed by falls (12.62%) and interpersonal violence (9.03%). The prevalence of maxillofacial fractures was higher in males (81.04%) and in the age group of 21-30 years (43.23%). Risk of bias across studies was considered low. Conclusion Maxillofacial fractures are a significant public health problem in Iran, with a high prevalence and RTAs being the leading cause. These results highlight the need for increased efforts to prevent maxillofacial fractures in Iran, especially through measures to reduce the incidence of RTAs.

Abstract
Background The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the changes in maxillofacial fracture epidemiology and etiology regarding Covid-19-related social distancing restrictions in an Iranian population. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was undertaken in six major trauma center hospitals in Iran in a period of two years (March 2018 until March 2020). The primary outcome variable was the maxillofacial fractures incidence. Patients' demographic data, date of injury as well as fracture characteristics, fracture etiology, type, and site were all recorded, compared, and analyzed in the control and experimental groups. Results The patients consisted of 520 (83.6%) males and 102 (16.4%) females. Patients sustaining maxillofacial fractures over this two-year period displayed a mean age of 31.24±14.44, with an age range of 2 to 88 years. The incidence of maxillofacial fractures significantly decreased in all age groups (p<0.001). After social distancing restrictions were placed; there was a significant drop in the number of subjects attending due to motorcycle collisions and road traffic accidents, whereas the number of fractures caused by assaults and domestic violence significantly increased (p<0.001 for each). Conclusion The investigators realized that social distancing restrictions were able to change the trends and patterns in maxillofacial fracture incidence and etiology.

Abstract
Trauma is a well-known issue in children, and its prevalence is on the rise more than that of dental caries in children. The objective of the study is to evaluate the association of Ellis class 1 fracture in children between 6 and 12 years. This study includes 45 males and 55 female patients of age 6-12 years. All the data regarding the study population was extracted from Dental Information Archiving Software-all patient records from management. The data collected were tabulated and imported to SPSS software. Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square tests. Ellis class 1 fracture ordinarily is observed to affect the central incisors. Majority of school children of 6-12 years of age were more vulnerable to dental trauma. There is a strong association between Ellis class 1 fracture in children of 6-12 years of age.

Abstract
The objective of the study is to evaluate the association of Ellis Class 2 fracture in children aged between 13 and 17 years. This is a descriptive study that was carried out in a university context, using data from patients with Ellis Class 2 fractures between 13 and 17 years from June 2019 to February 2021, which were obtained by analyzing patient records. The records were transferred to the SPSS software for statistical analysis. The association of Ellis Class 2 fracture is common in relation to 11 which is about 29.41% and more common among the age group of 14 years and had a more male prediction. The knowledge of Ellis Class 2 fracture and its association with several parameters are essential in dentistry for various clinical performances. This can be accomplished by increasing awareness through Continuing Dental Education (CDE) programs, demonstrations, and seminars on the clinical regime of Ellis Class 2 fracture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM The World Oral Maxillofacial Trauma (WORMAT) project was performed to analyze the causes and characteristics of maxillofacial fractures managed in 14 maxillofacial surgery divisions over a 1-year period. METHODS The following data were collected: age, sex, cause and mechanism of maxillofacial fracture, alcohol and/or drug abuse at the time of trauma, fracture site, Facial Injury Severity Scale score (FISS), associated injury, day of trauma, timing and type of treatment, and length of hospitalization. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. RESULTS Between 30 September 2019 and 4 October 2020, 2,387 patients (1,825 males and 562 females [ratio 3.2:1], 47.6% aged 20-39 years [mean age 37.2 years, median 33.0 years]) were hospitalised. The main cause of maxillofacial fracture was road traffic accidents (RTA), which were statistically associated with male adults as like as assault, sport, and work (p<0,05). Half of the fractures involved the middle third of the face, statistically associated with fall and assault (p<0.05). Trauma in multiple locations was significantly associated with longer hospital stay (p<0.05). The mean length of hospitalization was 3.9 days (95% Confidence Interval 3.7-4.2). CONCLUSIONS This prospective, multicenter epidemiological study confirmed that young adult males were the ones most commonly affected by maxillofacial fracture. RTAs and assaults are statistically associated with the adult population, while falls are associated with females and older population.

Abstract
Pediatric facial fractures are not as common as facial fractures occurring in the adult population. Their therapeutic approach is different because they affect patients with active growth, and have an etiology and epidemiology that vary depending on different cultural, religious and demographic factors. This research aimed to identify the main factors involved in the etiology of pediatric facial fractures, as well as the epidemiology of pediatric facial fractures in a sample of children and adolescents from North-Western Romania. This 10-year retrospective study was performed in a tertiary center for oral and maxillofacial surgery in North-Western Romania. Medical files of patients that were admitted between 1 January 2002 and 31 December 2022 were analyzed. Pediatric patients aged 0 to 18 years were included in this study. The final sample consisted of 142 children and adolescents diagnosed with facial fractures, with this number representing 14.1% of all patients affected by facial fractures. Most frequently, fractures were identified in the 13–18 age group (78.9%, n = 112), which were more often associated with fractures caused by interpersonal violence than caused by road traffic accidents, falls or animal attacks. Boys were more affected (88%, n = 125), and were more frequently associated with fractures caused by interpersonal violence. The most frequently identified etiological factors included interpersonal violence (50%, n = 71), falls (18.3%, n = 26) and road traffic accidents (11.3%, n = 16). In terms of location, the mandible was the most affected facial bone structure (66.2%, n = 94), and patients with mandibular fractures were more frequently associated with fractures caused by interpersonal violence. The incidence of pediatric facial fractures should be lowered because they may interfere with the proper development of the facial skeleton. Establishing measures aimed at preventing interpersonal violence, as well as other causes involved in the etiology of facial fractures is imperative.
