Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to summarize the ICF foci, looking beyond body structures and function, and to analyze who has been assessed in research about adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with CP in the phase of transition to adulthood. METHOD Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases were searched using terms related to cerebral palsy, adolescents/young adults, health development, participation, and independence. Studies including youth with CP (13-30 years old) published in English from 2014 to 2021 were considered. The methods of assessment reported in the included studies were used to identify the ICF foci and who was assessed. RESULTS In this study, 86 studies were reviewed. The main ICF foci are activity and participation (51% of the studies), personal factors (23%), ICF not covered (14%), ICF not defined (9%), with environmental factors being the least focused ICF component (3%). Most studies assessed AYAs directly (49% of studies). CONCLUSIONS Activity- and participation-related constructs are the leading research focus of studies, and more attention is needed concerning environmental factors. AYAs are the main source of information, and the perspectives of other key figures are also being valued. To bridge the gap between child and adult health care, a broader view of health development and approaches to explore AYA developmental issues must be taken.

Abstract
Research focused on children with intellectual disabilities has been of increasing interest over the last two decades. However, a considerable lag in the amount of research that is representative and generalizable to this population in comparison to neurotypical children remains, largely attributed to issues with participant engagement and recruitment. Challenges and barriers associated with engaging and recruiting this population include lack of research to provide a sound foundation of knowledge, ethical considerations, parental attitudes, family commitments, and organizational gatekeeping. Researchers can engage children and their families using participatory research methods, honouring the child's right to assent, and collaborating with parents. Recruitment strategies include partnering with organizations, working with parent and patient partners, and using remote methods. Employing evidence-informed engagement and recruitment strategies may provide substantial social and scientific value to the research field by ensuring that this underrepresented population benefits equitably from research findings.

Abstract
AIM Investigation of the perspectives of paediatric health care professionals (PHCPs) in Switzerland regarding factors that influence participation in physical activity programs for children and adolescents with disabilities or chronic conditions (CADCCs). Evaluation of self-reported exercise counselling behavior of those professionals. METHOD A cross-sectional survey was used to collect the opinions of 171 PHCPs working with CADCCs using a structured questionnaire. The information obtained was evaluated by performing a combined quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis. RESULTS PHCPs in Switzerland think that CADCC do not get enough physical activity and see the underlying reasons in lacking information/knowledge and organizational factors. We found that the level of knowledge about disability sports opportunities among PHCPs has a positive influence on their exercise counselling behaviour. CONCLUSIONS We propose three approaches to increase the level of physical activity in CADCC: Establishing personalized exercise counseling, intensifying information about disability sports programmes towards PHCPs, and improving inclusion and integration in PE lessons or regular sports clubs.

Abstract
The participation of adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) within the community is reduced compared to their peers and is a barrier to their socialization, self-determination and quality of life. Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) is a key strategy for successful interventions, especially when involvement of the stakeholders takes place at all stages of the research. Co-design can be crucial for success as researchers, patients with CP and their families work together to bring the necessary elements to the interventions to be designed. The objectives will be: (1) To co-design an intervention aimed at improving the participation of adolescents with significant motor disabilities within the community in partnership with adolescents with CP, families and rehabilitation professionals. (2) To assess the feasibility of the co-design process in partnership with interested parties. The study will be based on Participatory Action Research (PAR) and will be held in Spain and Brazil. In both countries, the study will be carried out remotely with nine adolescents aged 12 to 17 years with CP, Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels IV-V, their families and six health professionals (physiotherapists and occupational therapists). Different dialogue groups will be created to involve adolescents, families and health professionals to the research's project. To manage their involvement in the co-design process, the Involvement Matrix (IM) will be used, and according to the IM phases, four steps will be included in the research: (1) Preparation; (2) Co-design; (3) Analysis: results of the intervention protocol and the study's feasibility and (4) Dissemination of results. Partnering with the public to design an intervention to improve participation can bring better results compared to protocols designed only by health professionals. In addition, it will allow for knowing the needs of adolescents with CP in terms of participation within the community. The study will also explore which roles were chosen by all participants and how they felt while actively participating in the process of co-designing an intervention protocol and their own perspectives on the use of the involvement matrix.

Abstract
Objective To explore and compare the contents and scores of the Assessment of Life Habits (Life-H) with the Utrecht Scale for Evaluation of Rehabilitation-Participation (USER-Participation) in adolescents with cerebral palsy. Design Youth versions of both instruments were used for (1) content comparison and (2) analyses of relations between both instruments, based on cross-sectional data. Setting Clinic. Participants Participants were adolescents with cerebral palsy, aged 12-18 years; Gross Motor Function Classification System I-V; N=45. Interventions Not applicable. Main outcome measures Assessment of Life Habits (Life-H) with USER-Participation. Results Both instruments measure independence in participation, called accomplishment (Life-H) and restrictions (USER-Participation), and satisfaction with participation. Life-H provides a profile of 6 domain scores and the USER-Participation a total score per dimension. Compared with the USER-Participation, the Life-H contains more specific items, more items not-applicable to many participants and more ceiling effects. Total scores on the accomplishment/restrictions and satisfaction scales between both instruments showed strong correlation coefficients (0.87 and 0.67, respectively). Correlations between domain scores were stronger within the accomplishment/restrictions scales (range 0.37-0.88) compared with the satisfaction scales (range 0.22-0.68). Conclusions Compared with the USER-Participation, the Life-H takes more effort to complete but provides a more comprehensive assessment of participation. Participation accomplishment/restrictions scores were more similar between the instruments compared with satisfaction scores. Researchers and clinicians should carefully compare participation instruments in selecting one that matches their purpose.

Abstract
Introduction Cerebral palsy (CP) is a lifelong condition, where people may experience complications as they age. Including the views of people with CP through Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) ensures that research into the condition is relevant and meaningful in addressing their concerns. However, there is a lack of evidence on incorporating the voices of adults with CP in the doctoral research process. Therefore, this paper aims to provide an overview of how adults with CP were involved in a doctoral research process during the pandemic. Methods This paper describes the PPI process and its impact at various stages of the doctoral research process and reflects on the experiences from the perspective of the doctoral researcher and adults with CP using the INVOLVE Values and Principles framework. Five adults with CP were consulted throughout the doctoral research programme. The data for this paper is a combination of reflection notes, email exchanges, meeting minutes and informal discussions with the PPI team on their experiences of being involved in the PPI process. The content of this paper is informed by GRIPP 2 checklist. Results The doctoral researcher and adult reflections highlighted the value of collaboration and the positive impact on research at each stage of the doctoral research process. Although meetings were adapted due to the pandemic, the values of PPI were adhered to throughout the doctoral research. Conclusion Involving adults with CP positively impacted the doctoral research process. It is recommended to consider individual access needs to ensure meetings and information are accessible for disabled adults. Our reflective findings and recommendations may help other researchers who plan to involve adults with CP in doctoral research.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Scoping review. OBJECTIVE To identify and provide systematic overviews of partnership principles and strategies identified from health research about spinal cord injury (SCI) and related health conditions. METHODS Four health electronic databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO) were searched from inception to March 2019. We included articles that described, reflected, and/or evaluated one or more collaborative research activities in health research about SCI, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, amputation, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, acquired brain injury, or wheelchair-users. Partnership principles (i.e. norms or values) and strategies (i.e. observable actions) were extracted and analyzed using directed qualitative content analysis. RESULTS We included 39 articles about SCI (n = 13), stroke (n = 15), multiple sclerosis (n = 5), amputation (n = 2), cerebral palsy (n = 2), Parkinson's disease (n = 1), and wheelchair users (n = 1). We extracted 110 principles and synthesized them into 13 overarching principles. Principles related to building and maintaining relationships between researchers and research users were most frequently reported. We identified 32 strategies that could be applied at various phases of the research process and 26 strategies that were specific to a research phase (planning, conduct, or dissemination). CONCLUSION We provided systematic overviews of principles and strategies for research partnerships. These could be used by researchers and research users who want to work in partnership to plan, conduct and/or disseminate their SCI research. The findings informed the development of the new SCI Integrated Knowledge Translation Guiding Principles (www.iktprinciples.com) and will support the implementation of these Principles within the SCI research system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Quality participation, defined as satisfying and enjoyable involvement, is one of the most valued life outcomes for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. To broaden understandings of quality participation, our review explored participation experiences of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. METHOD Utilising an established systematic scoping review methodology, data were collected using three search tools (peer-reviewed databases, grey literature databases and Google). Inclusion criteria required that children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or their proxies provided descriptions of quality participation experiences in any life domain. RESULTS A total of 35 articles met the inclusion criteria. Quality participation strategies (30 total) and outcomes (8 total) were categorised according to six experiential elements (autonomy, belongingness, challenge, engagement, mastery and meaning). CONCLUSION Findings provide novel insight for building quality experiences across current and future participation initiatives.

Abstract
The problem of the research is important in the context of psychological assistance and interaction with adolescents with disabilities. The study aimed to carry out a comparative analysis of the resilience profiles of adolescents with congenital (cerebral palsy), acquired disabilities (oncology, rheumatic diseases) and healthy peers. The study involved 51 adolescents with cerebral palsy, 61 with oncological diseases, 51 with rheumatic diseases and 86 conditionally healthy adolescents aged 13 to 18 years old. In total it embraced 249 teenagers (mean age 14.94+1.48), of which 128 were male and 121 were female. There were used the following methods: the “Victimity” questionnaire (M.A. Odintsova, N.P. Radchikova), “Resilience Test” (E.N. Osin, E.I. Rasskazova) and “COPE” questionnaire (E.I. Rasskazova, T.O. Gordeeva, E.N. Osin). The study revealed significant differences in the resilience profiles of adolescents from different groups: healthy teenagers are mainly characterized by unstable and resilient profiles; adolescents with oncology and rheumatic diseases — by all three profiles; adolescents with cerebral palsy — by victim and unstable ones. The female part of the sample, unlike the male part, are characterized by unstable and victim profiles. The most significant differences in groups with different resilience profiles were found in coping strategies related to the dysfunctional coping style. The use of coping strategies: behavioral disengagement, mental disengagement, concentration on emotions and humor leads to a decrease in resilience in the boys of the entire sample. Concentration on emotions, behavioral disengagement, mental disengagement, and infrequent use of active coping are predictors of reduced resilience
in girls.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objectives: to investigate the correlation between fatigue and quality of life in adolescents with cerebral palsy who are susceptible to more significant fatigue and lower quality of life. Methods: cross-sectional study conducted with 101 adolescents with cerebral palsy. Instruments such as the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory and Gross Motor Function Classification System were used, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney, and Spearman tests were applied. Results: older adolescents self-reported higher fatigue levels, and female adolescents, quadriplegic, with worse motor function, older, and not attending school had lower quality of life scores. Higher fatigue levels correlated with lower quality of life in all domains (p<0.01), especially in tiredness (general and mental) and functioning (social, academic, and psychosocial). Conclusions: fatigue correlated negatively with the quality of life of adolescents with cerebral palsy, showing that the higher the level of fatigue, the more compromised is the adolescents’ life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As part of a research project aimed at evaluating a hospital-based adolescent transition programme, we asked ourselves what is known about the ethical and methodological challenges of research involving adolescent patients as co-researchers. The aim of our review was to summarize empirical evidence and identify knowledge gaps about the involvement of young patients as co-researchers. METHODS We conducted a scoping review through searches in MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, AMED. RESULTS We found reports of young patients being actively engaged as co-researchers in any stage of a research project, although commonly they were not involved in every stage. Including young patients as co-researchers is resource demanding and time-consuming. Involving young patients as co-researchers contributes to the fulfilment of their right to participation and may improve the relevance of research. Benefits for the young co-researcher include empowerment, skills building and raised self-esteem. Few authors go into detail about ethical considerations when involving young co-researchers. None of the included articles discuss legal considerations. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION No lists of recommendations are given, but recommendations can be deduced from the articles. There is need for time, funding and flexibility when including young patients as co-researchers. Knowledge gaps concern legal and ethical dilemmas of including a vulnerable group as co-researchers. More reflection is needed about what meaningful participation is and what it entails in this context. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This review is part of a research project where the hospital youth council has been involved in discussions of focus area and methods.

Abstract
PURPOSE We examined the self-care experiences of adolescents with spinal muscle atrophy (SMA) and their perceptions of the interactions between their body and the environment. METHODS We interviewed ten adolescents with SMA aged 13-18 years old regarding personal care practices. Purposive sampling was conducted in two medical centers in northern Taiwan. Data were analyzed using the Giorgi analysis method. RESULTS Four constitutions were identified: 1. limited space for independent development, 2. multiple reconstructions of self-image to improve physical ability, 3. self-care of disease, and 4. developing activity styles to accommodate social culture. CONCLUSION The self-care lived experiences of patients reflect dynamic changes in the body and environment. Self-existence was exhibited by adjustment, practice, and creativity of physical activity to integrate into society. Nursing staff should understand the self-care experiences and needs of adolescents with SMA to develop a database of self-care skills. This study recommended that nursing staff improve their ability to guide patients in taking care of themselves by developing body awareness self-care courses and individual care plans in response to various stages of disability to help patients delay deterioration, realize their physical potential, and promote independence and social development.

Abstract
AIM To examine the most relevant aspects of functioning of adults with cerebral palsy (CP) from their perspective, in order to develop an International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Core Set for adults with CP. METHOD We conducted six focus group discussions with adults with CP without intellectual disability and seven interviews with adults with CP with intellectual disability and caregivers, addressing all ICF components. Meaningful concepts were identified from verbatim transcripts and linked to ICF categories by two independent researchers. RESULTS In total, 31 adults with CP without intellectual disability (mean [SD] age 46y 1mo [14y 1mo]; 20 females, 11 males; Gross Motor Function Classification System [GMFCS] levels I-IV) and seven adults with CP and intellectual disability (mean [SD] age 25y 8mo [6y 8mo]; four females, three males; GMFCS levels III-V) participated. We identified 132 unique second-level categories: 47 body functions, seven body structures, 43 activities and participation, and 35 environmental factors. The most frequently mentioned categories were emotional function, pain, muscle tone function, support of family, products and technology, and health services. INTERPRETATION Adults with CP experienced problems in a broad range of body functions and activities and indicated the importance of environmental factors for functioning. The identified categories will be added to the list of candidate items to reach consensus on an ICF Core Set for adults with CP. What this paper adds Including the lived experience is crucial for fully understanding functioning of adults with cerebral palsy (CP). Adults with CP perceive environmental factors as essential elements for everyday functioning. Adults with intellectual disability should be considered as a group with specific problems.

Abstract
PURPOSE To provide an overview of environmental factors associated with participation and participation-related constructs in children and youth with cerebral palsy (CP). METHODS A rapid review following the principles from scoping methodology was performed with a literature search in September 2019. The CINAHL, Embase, Ovid MEDLINE and PsychINFO databases were searched to identify original articles which addressed participation in children and youth (aged 0-18) with CP. RESULTS In total, 9511 unique articles were identified, of which 34 met all inclusion criteria. Many different measures for environmental factors were used. Most common environmental factors associated with participation (i.e., attendance and involvement) were family ecology, type of school, and parental stress. Regarding participation-related constructs (activity competence, sense of self and preferences), most common factors were parental stress and the physical environment. CONCLUSIONS While environmental factors are found to be associated with participation attendance and activity competence in children with CP, there is a lack of research of environmental factors in relation to both participation involvement and other participation-related constructs. To increase impact in clinical practice, future research should involve structured assessments of the environment and focus more on modifiable factors, to help service providers develop treatment paradigms needed for meaningful participation outcomes.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONFamily ecology, type of school, and parental stress were the most common factors associated with participation.Future research should focus on modifiable factors associated with participation outcomes.Modifiable environmental factors associated with participation included parental stress, family activity and type of school.In clinical practice, environmental factors are to be assessed in a more systematic way in relation to current or future participation restrictions.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the feasibility and the preliminary effects of an individualized intensive goal training for adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP). METHODS Twelve adolescents with CP (12-17 years old, MACS II-III, GMFCS I-IV) identified functional goals to be practiced three hours/day, five days/week, for two weeks. The feasibility aspects included the participant's adherence (i.e., daily logs), the adequacy of the instruments used, and the participant's satisfaction with the intervention (i.e., structured questionnaire). Outcome measures included the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) (self-care; mobility), Children Helping Out: Responsibilities, Expectations and Supports (CHORES), Participation and Environment Measure-Children and Youth (PEM-CY) (home) and Box and Blocks Test (BBT). Assessments were conducted one month and two days before the intervention, immediately and three months after the intervention. Friedman tests were used to test time-related differences in the outcome measures. RESULTS All adolescents completed and reported satisfaction with the proposed intervention. Significant improvements were observed in performance and satisfaction (COPM), in functional skills and caregiver assistance in self-care and in the performance of household tasks. There were no significant differences in mobility skills, independence in mobility or household tasks, home participation, or manual dexterity. CONCLUSION The intensive training was feasible and promoted improvements in functional goals and daily functioning of adolescents with CP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interest in patient involvement in research is growing. Research should rather be 'with' or 'by' patients, and not only be 'about' or 'for' patients. Patients' active involvement in research is not self-evident and special efforts have to be made. If we make efforts towards patient involvement, it could contribute to even more relevant projects with an even greater impact. In this paper we describe the process of development of a tool to support patient involvement in research projects. METHODS The tool development was done in a co-creation of experience experts (patients and their parents/relatives) together with researchers. We used a participatory method in an iterative process comprising three consecutive stages. First, the purpose for the tool was explored, using focus groups. Second, the main ingredients and conceptualization for the tool were determined, using a narrative review. Third, the so-called Involvement Matrix was formalized and finalized using various expert panels. RESULTS A conversation tool was developed, through which researchers and patients could discuss and explain their roles of involvement in a research project. This tool was formalized and visualized as a 'matrix'. The so-called Involvement Matrix describes five roles (i.e., Listener, Co-thinker, Advisor, Partner, and Decision-maker) and three phases (i.e., Preparation, Execution, and Implementation) and includes a user's guide. CONCLUSION The Involvement Matrix can be used prospectively to discuss about possible roles of patients in different phases of projects, and retrospectively to discuss whether roles were carried out satisfactorily. Sharing experiences with the Involvement Matrix and evaluating its impact are the next steps in supporting patient involvement in research.

Abstract
Background There is evidence that gross motor function impacts the health-related quality of life of young adults with cerebral palsy. This study aimed to assess gross motor function, oral health and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and the relationship between them in young adults with cerebral palsy. Methods The sample comprised 46 individuals aged between 13 and 17 years with Gross Motor Function Classification Scores (GMFCS) ranging from level I to level III. The individuals and their parents were administered an Arabic version of the child perception questionnaire for adolescents. Parental and child perception scores, DMFT, and gingival index were compared across GMFCS levels using the one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's post hoc test. Results Children with level III GMFCS had a significantly higher child perception score (CPQ) and parental perception score (PPQ) than those with level I or level II scores. There was a significant association between function (GMFCS) and the CPQ score in children (p = 0.016). No significant associations were found between the CPQ score and either dental caries (DMFT) or gingival bleeding (GI) scores. Children with GMFCS level III had a significantly higher DMFT (p = 0.016). No significant associations were found between the CPQ score and either dental caries (DMFT) or gingival bleeding (GI) scores. Children with GMFCS level III had a significantly higher DMFT (p = 0.016). No significant associations were found between the CPQ score and either dental caries (DMFT) or gingival bleeding (GI) scores. AIM To determine the long-term development of autonomy in participation of individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) without intellectual disability. METHOD Individuals with CP (n=189, 117 males, 72 females; mean age [SD] 21y 11mo [4y 11mo], range 12-34y); were assessed cross-sectionally (46%) or up to four times (54%), between the ages of 12 and 34 years. Autonomy in participation was classified using phase 3 of the Rotterdam Transition Profile. A logistic generalized estimating equation regression model was used to analyse autonomy in six domains (independent variables: age, Gross Motor Function Classification System [GMFCS] level, and interaction between age and GMFCS level). Proportions of autonomy were compared to references using binomial tests (p<0.05). RESULTS In most domains, over 90% of participants (n=189, 400 observations, 80% in GMFCS levels I and II) reached autonomy in participation in their late twenties, except for intimate/sexual relationships. Those in GMFCS levels III to V compared to those in GMFCS levels I and II had less favourable development of autonomy in the transportation, intimate relationships, employment, and housing domains, and more favourable development in the finances domain. Compared to references, fewer individuals with CP were autonomous in participation. INTERPRETATION This knowledge of autonomy may guide the expectations of young people with CP and their caregivers. Furthermore, rehabilitation professionals should address autonomy development in intimate relationships, employment, and housing, especially in individuals with lower gross motor function. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS Individuals with cerebral palsy without intellectual disability achieved autonomy in most participation domains. Regarding intimate relationships, they continued to have less experience compared to age-matched references. Development of autonomy was less favourable for individuals in Gross Motor Function Classification System levels III to V.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Communication, behavioural disturbances and low motivation influence the functional potential and the effectiveness of interventions in adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP). While the model of human occupation (MOHO) is a conceptual model in occupational therapy, no research on the volition of adolescents with CP in daily activities has been undertaken. AIM To explore the elements contributing to the volition of adolescents with CP based on their own experience. METHODS A qualitative approach using directed content analysis with volition of MOHO as a framework was applied. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were carried out with five adolescents with CP and five parents of the same adolescents. RESULTS In this study primary codes were categorized into eight categories: family and community-related values, individual values, individual perceptions of ability level, sense of control over conditions, enjoying performing activities, enjoying interpersonal relationships, physical context features and social context features. CONCLUSIONS Personal causation in interaction with environmental features is strongly influenced by adolescents' motivation. SIGNIFICANCE Occupational therapists could improve the motivation of adolescents with CP in interaction with the individual's volition with focussing on self-efficacy for promoting personal causation. Adapting to the physical environment and changing the attitudes of others to these adolescents is necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adults with cerebral palsy (CP) may experience problems with participation in domestic life and interpersonal relationships. AIMS To identify teenage predictors of adult participation in domestic life and interpersonal relationships. METHODS AND PROCEDURES This 13-year follow-up of the PERRIN 16-24 cohort included 53 adults with CP without intellectual disability [current age 31.7 (SD = 1.4) years]. Participation performance was assessed as attendance (Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales), and difficulty/assistance with participation (Life Habits questionnaire). 56 teenage factors were categorized in ICF components. Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses explored predictors of participation. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS Lower gross motor capacity, following special education, having protective parents and a rigid personality predicted less participation in domestic life. Having rejective parents, receiving little daily support, having a socially avoidant personality or coping style and the male gender predicted less participation in interpersonal relationships. Lower activity and participation levels as a teenager predicted less participation in both domestic life and interpersonal relationships of adults with CP. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Environmental and personal factors, gross motor capacity and teenage participation were predictors of participation of adults with CP. These factors help identify subgroups at risk for suboptimal adult participation and provide targets for rehabilitation.

Abstract
Objective To explore participation in social roles of adolescents (aged 12-18y) with cerebral palsy (CP), in terms of satisfaction compared with accomplishment. Design Cohort study as part of a prospective longitudinal research program. Setting Clinic. Participants Participants were adolescents (N=45; 58% male, mean age 15y 6mo) with CP at levels I-II (88%) and III-IV-V (12%) of the Gross Motor Function Classification System. Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures Accomplishment (0-9 scale; with score <8 “having difficulties”) and satisfaction (1-5 scale; with score 3 “neutral”) were assessed using the Life-Habits questionnaire, on 6 domains (Responsibilities, Interpersonal relationships, Community life, Education, Employment, Recreation). Per domain, we analyzed scatterplots of accomplishment vs satisfaction. Additionally, we compared determinant-models (including factors of CP, activity, person, and environment) using regression analysis. Results For accomplishment, mean scores were <8.00 except for Interpersonal relationships. For satisfaction, mean scores varied between 3.85 and 4.34. Overall, individuals with similar levels of accomplishment showed large ranges in their levels of satisfaction, which was expressed by low explained variances, especially on Education (6%). Furthermore, different sets of determinants were found for accomplishment (predominantly CP factors) compared with satisfaction (predominantly environment factors). Conclusions This study revealed a dissociation between participation accomplishment and satisfaction with participation among adolescents with CP. For practice and research, we recommend not only to focus on accomplishment but also, if not mainly, on satisfaction.

Abstract
Background Participation in society can be difficult for adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP). Information is often based on quantitative studies, and little is known about their personal participation experiences. Objective The aim of this study was to examine the participation experiences of adolescents (aged 12‐17 years) with CP. Methods A qualitative participatory research method was used. Twenty‐three semi‐structured open interviews were conducted with 13 male and 10 female adolescents (mean age 15 years) with CP. An interview checklist was developed jointly with adolescents with CP. This checklist ensured that the adolescents reflected on various participation areas, that is school, sports, health care and work. The analysis was based on principles of grounded theory. Findings From the adolescents’ experiences, 4 key categories were identified. One concerned participation, as such, expressed as “My participation experiences,” including experiences, thoughts and feelings while participating in daily life. Three other categories concerned factors that influence participation experiences, expressed as “My disability,” “Me as a person” and “My environment.” These 4 categories together formed a model showing the interactions and dynamics of participation according to adolescents with CP. Conclusion Adolescents with CP expressed their participation experiences, including various important influencing factors. This study conceptualized these experiences into a dynamic model. This experience‐based participation model may provide new, personalized perspectives for practice, for instance in rehabilitation, but also for schools and sports (or sports clubs) attended by adolescents. Focusing on personal and environmental factors might be the key to successful participation.
