Abstract
PURPOSE Glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH), widely used globally, were initially considered harmless to humans. Experimental studies have suggested that these substances can disrupt iron homeostasis by interfering with iron uptake or triggering inflammatory responses. However, their potential impact on human iron homeostasis remains underexplored. APPROACH AND RESULTS We analyzed data from 5812 participants aged three and older from the 2013 to 2018 NHANES. We investigated the relationships between urinary glyphosate levels, oral iron intake, and markers of iron homeostasis, including serum iron, unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation, ferritin, and transferrin receptor. Higher urinary glyphosate levels were positively associated with oral iron intake (β = 1.310, S.E. = 0.382, P = 0.001). A one-unit increase in the natural logarithm (ln)-glyphosate was associated with lower serum iron (β = - 4.236, 95 % CI = - 6.432 to - 2.039, P < 0.001) and ferritin (β = - 9.994, 95 % CI = - 17.342 to - 2.647, P = 0.009), and higher UIBC (β = 5.431, 95 % CI = 1.061-9.800, P = 0.018) and transferrin receptor levels (β = 0.139, 95 % CI = 0.015-0.263, P = 0.029). Increasing glyphosate exposure was associated with significant decreases in serum iron and ferritin across exposure quintiles (trend P-values = 0.003 and 0.018, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Higher glyphosate exposure is associated with reduced iron availability, suggesting potential disruptions in iron absorption. These findings underscore the need for further research into the health implications of glyphosate exposure on iron homeostasis.

Abstract
Glyphosate (Gly) and its formulations are broad-spectrum herbicides globally used for pre- and post-emergent weed control. Glyphosate has been applied to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Critics have claimed that Gly-treated plants have altered mineral nutrition and increased susceptibility to plant pathogens because of Gly ability to chelate divalent metal cations. Still, the complete resistance of Gly indicates that chelation of metal cations does not play a role in herbicidal efficacy or have a substantial impact on mineral nutrition. Due to its extensive and inadequate use, this herbicide has been frequently detected in soil (2 mg kg-1, European Union) and in stream water (328 µg L-1, USA), mostly in surface (7.6 µg L-1, USA) and groundwater (2.5 µg L-1, Denmark). International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) already classified Gly as a category 2 A carcinogen in 2016. Therefore, it is necessary to find the best degradation techniques to remediate soil and aquatic environments polluted with Gly. This review elucidates the effects of Gly on humans, soil microbiota, plants, algae, and water. This review develops deeper insight toward the advances in Gly biodegradation using microbial communities. This review provides a thorough understanding of Gly interaction with mineral elements and its limitations by interfering with the plants biochemical and morphological attributes.

Abstract
Glyphosate application, even in low doses, changes the nutrient composition of crops. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of low doses of glyphosate and the sowing season on the macronutrient and micronutrient contents of early cycle common beans. Two experiments were conducted in the field, namely one in the winter season and one in the wet season, using the early cycle common bean cultivar IAC Imperador. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design consisting of the application of low doses of glyphosate [0.0, 1.8, 7.2, 12.0, 36.0, 54.0, and 108.0 g acid equivalent (a.e.) ha-1] in the phenological stage V4 with four replications. Environmental conditions, such as air temperature, interfered with the response of early cycle common beans to low doses of glyphosate. In the winter season, doses of 7.2 g a.e. ha-1 and 36.0 g a.e. ha-1 increased the nutrient composition in the bean leaves, whereas only the Cu content increased in the grains by the dose of 1.8 g a.e. ha-1. In the wet season, there was no increase in the nutrient composition in the bean leaves. The Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe contents in the grains increased with from the dose of 12 g a.e. ha-1 to above the amount normally observed in common beans, thereby improving the nutritional quality of the food. Our study indicated that low doses of glyphosate alter the nutrient composition of common beans, whereas environmental conditions interfere with the response of common beans to low doses of glyphosate.

Abstract
Glyphosate detection and quantification is still a challenge. After an extensive review of the literature, we observed that Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) had practically not yet been used for detection or quantification. The interaction between zinc oxide (ZnO), silver oxide (Ag2O), and Ag-doped ZnO nanocrystals (NCs), as well as that between nanocomposite (Ag-doped ZnO/AgO) and glyphosate was analyzed with FTIR to determine whether nanomaterials could be used as signal enhancers for glyphosates. The results were further supported with the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. The glyphosate commercial solutions were intensified 10,000 times when incorporated the ZnO NCs. However, strong chemical interactions between Ag and glyphosate may suppress signaling, making FTIR identification difficult. In short, we have shown for the first time that ZnO NCs are exciting tools with the potential to be used as signal amplifiers of glyphosate, the use of which may be explored in terms of the detection of other molecules based on nanocrystal affinity.

Abstract
Iron deficiency severely affects crop yield and quality. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays a vital role in plant responses to multifarious stresses. However, the role of GABA in Fe deficiency responses and the potential mechanisms remain largely unknown in cucumber. Here, we found that Fe deficiency raised the GABA levels in leaves and roots of cucumber. To probe the role of GABA in Fe deficiency, the seedlings were subjected to five levels of GABA concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mmol L-1) for 7 days under Fe deficiency. The results demonstrated that 20 mM GABA in alleviating the Fe deficiency-induced stress was the most effective. GABA pretreatment reduced the Fe deficiency-induced chlorosis and inhibition of photosynthesis and growth, and significantly enhanced the contents of iron in shoots and roots. Exogenous GABA significantly decreased the pH of nutrient solution and increased ferric-chelate reductase (FCR) activity induced by Fe deficiency and the transcript levels of Fe uptake-related genes HA1, FRO2 and IRT1 in roots. GABA also increased the content of auxin (IAA) and expression of auxin biosynthesis (YUC4), response (IAA1), and transport (PIN1) genes under Fe deficiency. Furthermore, exogenous the auxin transport inhibitor 1-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA) application abolished the GABA-induced changes in Fe deficiency. In summary, we found that GABA improves tolerance to iron deficiency via an auxin-dependent mechanism in cucumber.

Abstract
To produce high quality, glyphosate-resistant soybeans, we crossed Jinda 73 and glyphosate-resistant RR1 (Roundup Ready First Generation) (RR1) resulting in 34 hybrid strains. To determine the effects of glyphosate on soybean metabolism, we grew the two parents upto the seedling stage, and measured chlorophyll, soluble sugar, malondialdehyde (MDA), relative conductivity and proline. Then, we treated the plants with glyphosate and measured the same factors again. Results showed that the chlorophyll content of Jinda 73 and RR1 decreased after spraying glyphosate. Glyphosate increased the level of soluble sugar, MDA, relative conductivity and proline in Jinda 73, but had no significant effect on RR1. We determined glyphosate resistance of the parents and the 34 hybrid, offspring strains by documenting the growth response in the field after treatment with glyphosate. Results showed that 29 hybrid, offspring strains have complete glyphosate resistance. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) shows that the strains which have complete resistance to glyphosate have imported the CP4 5-enolpyhruvylshikimate-3- phosphate synthase (CP4 EPSPS) gene successfully. We selected three high quality, glyphosate-resistant strains (F7-3, F7-16 and F7-21), which had higher protein and oil levels as compared with Jinda 73.

Abstract
The use of herbicides to control weed species could lead to environmental threats due to their persistence and accumulation in the ecosystems and cultivated fields. Nonetheless, the effect of these compounds on plant mineral nutrition in crops has been barely investigated. This study aimed at ascertaining the effect of three herbicides (S-metolachlor, metribuzin and terbuthylazine) on the capacity of maize to acquire iron (Fe). Interferences on plant growth and reductions on the Fe contents were found in the plants treated. Furthermore, root cell viability and functionality losses were ascertained following the treatments, which, in turn, decreased the amount of phytosiderophores (PSs) released by the roots. An investigation carried out in greater depth on root apices of treated plants using an FE-SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) coupled with EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray) indicated that the reductions on Fe content started in this part of the roots. Lastly, decreases were found also in copper (Cu+2), zinc (Zn+2) and manganese (Mn+2) content in root apices.

Abstract
Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs), consisting of glyphosate and formulants, are the most frequently applied herbicides worldwide. The declared active ingredient glyphosate does not only inhibit the EPSPS but is also a chelating agent that binds macro- and micronutrients, essential for many plant processes and pathogen resistance. GBH treatment may thus impede uptake and availability of macro- and micronutrients in plants. The present study investigated whether this characteristic of glyphosate could contribute to adverse effects of GBH application in the environment and to human health. According to the results, it has not been fully elucidated whether the chelating activity of glyphosate contributes to the toxic effects on plants and potentially on plant-microorganism interactions, e.g., nitrogen fixation of leguminous plants. It is also still open whether the chelating property of glyphosate is involved in the toxic effects on organisms other than plants, described in many papers. By changing the availability of essential as well as toxic metals that are bound to soil particles, the herbicide might also impact soil life, although the occurrence of natural chelators with considerably higher chelating potentials makes an additional impact of glyphosate for most metals less likely. Further research should elucidate the role of glyphosate (and GBH) as a chelator, in particular, as this is a non-specific property potentially affecting many organisms and processes. In the process of reevaluation of glyphosate its chelating activity has hardly been discussed.

Abstract
Based on experimental data from laboratory and field, numerous authors have raised concern that exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) may pre-dispose crops to damage by microbial pathogens. In this review, we distinguish and evaluate two principal pathways by which GBHs may affect the susceptibility of crops to disease: pathway 1-via disruptions to rhizosphere microbial ecology, and pathway 2-via restriction of nutrients to crops. We conclude that GBHs have the potential to undermine crop health in a number of ways, including: (i) impairment of the innate physiological defences of glyphosate-sensitive (GS) cultivars by interruption of the shikimic acid pathway; (ii) impairment of physiological disease defences has also been shown to occur in some glyphosate-resistant (GR) cultivars, despite their engineered resistance to glyphosate's primary mode of action; (iii) interference with rhizosphere microbial ecology (in particular, GBHs have the potential to enhance the population and/or virulence of some phytopathogenic microbial species in the crop rhizosphere); and finally, (iv) the as yet incompletely elucidated reduction in the uptake and utilisation of nutrient metals by crops. Future progress will best be achieved when growers, regulators and industry collaborate to develop products, practices and policies that minimise the use of herbicides as far as possible and maximise their effectiveness when used, while facilitating optimised food production and security.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Safeners are agrochemicals used in agriculture to protect crops from herbicide injuries. They act by stimulating herbicide metabolism. As graminaceous plants, to cope with iron (Fe) deficiency, activate sulfur (S) metabolism and release huge amounts of Fe-chelating compounds, or phytosiderophores (PSs), we investigated, in barley plants (Hordeum vulgare, L.) grown in Fe deficiency, the effects of three safeners on two enzymes of S assimilation, cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH), and PS release. Finally, we monitored the root Fe content in plants treated with the most effective safener. RESULTS Generally, all the safeners activated S metabolism and increased Cys and GSH contents. In addition, the safened plants excreted higher levels of PSs. Given that mefenpyr-diethyl (Mef) was the most effective in causing these effects, we assessed the Fe concentration in Mef-treated barley and found higher Fe levels than those in untreated plants. CONCLUSION The three safeners, in different ways but specifically, activated S reductive metabolism and regulated Cys and GSH contents, PS release rate and Fe content (Mef-treated barley). The results of this research provide new indications of the biochemical and physiological mechanisms involved in the safening action. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
5-Enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) and glyphosate N-acetyltransferase (GAT) can detoxify glyphosate by alleviating the suppression of shikimate pathway. In this study, we obtained transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing AM79 aroA, GAT, and both of them, respectively, to evaluate whether overexpression of both genes could confer transgenic plants with higher glyphosate resistance. The transgenic plants harboring GAT or AM79 aroA, respectively, showed good glyphosate resistance. As expected, the hybrid plants containing both GAT and AM79 aroA exhibited improved glyphosate resistance than the transgenic plants overexpressing only a single gene. When grown on media with high concentration of glyphosate, seedlings containing a single gene were severely inhibited, whereas plants expressing both genes were affected less. When transgenic plants grown in the greenhouse were sprayed with glyphosate, less damage was observed for the plants containing both genes. Metabolomics analysis showed that transgenic plants containing two genes could maintain the metabolism balance better than those containing one gene after glyphosate treatment. Glyphosate treatment did not lead to a huge increase of shikimate contents of tobacco leaves in transgenic plants overexpressing two genes, whereas significant increase of shikimate contents in transgenic plants containing only a single gene was observed. These results demonstrated that pyramiding both aroA and GAT in transgenic plants can enhance glyphosate resistance, and this strategy can be used for the development of transgenic glyphosate-resistant crops.

Abstract
Glyphosate drift to nontarget crops causes growth aberrations and yield losses. This herbicide can also interact with divalent nutrients and form poorly soluble complexes. The possibility of using nickel (Ni), an essential divalent metal, for alleviating glyphosate drift damage to wheat was investigated in this study. Effects of Ni applications on various growth parameters, seed yield, and quality of durum wheat ( Triticum durum ) treated with sublethal glyphosate at different developmental stages were investigated in greenhouse experiments. Nickel concentrations of various plant parts and glyphosate-induced shikimate accumulation were measured. Foliar but not soil Ni applications significantly reduced glyphosate injuries including yield losses, stunting, and excessive tillering. Both shoot and grain Ni concentrations were enhanced by foliar Ni treatment. Seed germination and seedling vigor were impaired by glyphosate and improved by foliar Ni application to parental plants. Foliar Ni application appears to have a great potential to ameliorate glyphosate drift injury to wheat.

Abstract
Claims have been made recently that glyphosate-resistant (GR) crops sometimes have mineral deficiencies and increased plant disease. This review evaluates the literature that is germane to these claims. Our conclusions are: (1) although there is conflicting literature on the effects of glyphosate on mineral nutrition on GR crops, most of the literature indicates that mineral nutrition in GR crops is not affected by either the GR trait or by application of glyphosate; (2) most of the available data support the view that neither the GR transgenes nor glyphosate use in GR crops increases crop disease; and (3) yield data on GR crops do not support the hypotheses that there are substantive mineral nutrition or disease problems that are specific to GR crops.

Abstract
Iron-limited cells of the green alga Chlorella kesslerii use a reductive mechanism to acquire Fe(III) from the extracellular environment, in which a plasma membrane ferric reductase reduces Fe(III)-chelates to Fe(II), which is subsequently taken up by the cell. Previous work has demonstrated that synthetic chelators both support ferric reductase activity (when supplied as Fe(III)-chelates) and inhibit ferric reductase. In the present set of experiments we extend these observations to naturally-occurring chelators and their analogues (desferrioxamine B mesylate, schizokinen, two forms of dihydroxybenzoic acid) and also two formulations of the commonly-used herbicide N-(phoshonomethyl)glycine (glyphosate). The ferric forms of the larger siderophores (desferrioxamine B mesylate, schizokinen) and Fe(III)-N-(phoshonomethyl)glycine (as the isopropylamine salt) all supported rapid rates of ferric reductase activity, while the iron-free forms inhibited reductase activity. The smaller siderophores/siderophore precursors, 2,3- and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acids, did not support high rates of reductase in the ferric form but did inhibit reductase activity in the iron-free form. Bioassays indicated that Fe(III)-chelates that supported high rates of ferric reductase activity also supported a large stimulation in the growth of iron-limited cells, and that an excess of iron-free chelator decreased the growth rate. With respect to N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, there were differences between the pure compound (free acid form) and the most common commercial formulation (which also contains isopropylamine) in terms of supporting and inhibiting ferric reductase activity and growth. Overall, these results suggest that photosynthetic organisms that use a reductive strategy for iron acquisition both require, and are potentially simultaneously inhibited by, ferric chelators. Furthermore, these results also may provide an explanation for the frequently contradictory results of N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine application to crops: we suggest that low concentrations of this molecule likely solubilize Fe(III), making it available for plant growth, but that higher (but sub-lethal) concentrations decrease iron acquisition by inhibiting ferric reductase activity.

Abstract
When glyphosate is applied to glyphosate-resistant (GR) crops, drift to nonglyphosate-resistant (non-GR) crops may cause significant injury and reduce yields. Tools are needed to quantify injury and predict crop losses. In this study, glyphosate drift was simulated by direct application at 12.5% of the recommended label rate to non-GR corn (Zea mays L.) at 3 or 6 weeks after planting (WAP) during two field seasons in the Mississippi delta region of the southeastern USA. Visual plant injury, shikimate accumulation, nitrate reductase activity, leaf nitrogen, yield, and seed composition were evaluated. Effects were also evaluated in GR corn and GR corn with stacked glufosinate-resistant gene at the recommended label rate at 3 and 6 WAP. Glyphosate at 105 g ae/ha was applied once at 3 or 6 weeks after planting to non-GR corn. Glyphosate at 840 (lower label limit) or 1260 (upper label limit) g ae/ha was applied twice at 3 and 6 WAP to transgenic corn. Glyphosate caused injury (45-55%) and increased shikimate levels (24-86%) in non-GR compared to nontreated corn. In non-GR corn, glyphosate drift did not affect starch content but increased seed protein 8-21% while reducing leaf nitrogen reductase activity 46-64%, leaf nitrogen 7-16%, grain yield 49-54%, and seed oil 18-23%. In GR and GR stacked with glufosinate-resistant corn, glyphosate applied at label rates did not affect corn yield, leaf and seed nitrogen, or seed composition (protein, oil, and starch content). Yet, nitrate reductase activity was reduced 5-19% with glyphosate at 840 + 840 g/ha rate and 8-42% with glyphosate at 1260 + 1260 g/ha rate in both GR and GR stacked corn. These results demonstrate the potential for severe yield loss in non-GR corn exposed to glyphosate drift.

Abstract
The herbicide, glyphosate, has been shown to stimulate growth in a range of species when applied at doses of 5-60 g a.e.ha(-1), corresponding to realistic spray drift events. This study investigates growth of shoot parameters over time to detect whether the glyphosate induced growth increase was sustained and had a final effect on reproduction. The results showed that an actual biomass growth rate increase took place within the first week after spraying with glyphosate doses <60 g a.e.ha(-1). This initial growth boost kept treated plants larger than untreated plants for up to six weeks, but at harvest there was no significant difference between control plants and treated plants. Possible effects of glyphosate hormesis on the competitive ability of spray drift affected plants are discussed.
