Abstract
BACKGROUND Electromyographic activity (EMG) of masticatory muscles during wakefulness is understudied. It is unclear if single channel ambulatory EMG devices are sensitive enough to detect masticatory muscle activity (MMA) during wakefulness. OBJECTIVES To compare the MMA of various oral tasks recorded with a single channel EMG device ((Grindcare4-datalogger Prototype device) (GC4-β)) and a conventional EMG (cEMG) device. METHODS EMG activity of 30 standardised oral tasks was recorded unilaterally from the masseter and anterior temporalis muscle in 24 healthy volunteers using GC4-β and a cEMG device. To compare the EMG data, signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) were calculated as a way to normalise EMG activity across tasks. Analysis of variance was used to compare the SNR between the devices, muscles and oral tasks. RESULTS SNR measured from GC4-β was overall significantly higher than the cEMG device (p =.001). The SNR for maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) was significantly higher than all other tasks (p <.001). SNR for temporalis with GC4-β was significantly higher for MVC, hard food, soft food, gum chewing (dominant side), rhythmic clenching and upper lip biting compared to the cEMG device (p <.021). The SNR for masseter with GC4-β was significantly higher for hard food and gum chewing (dominant side), rhythmic clenching, rhythmic biting of an object and yawning compared to the cEMG device (p <.022). CONCLUSIONS This study provides novel insight into the EMG patterns of numerous oral tasks enhancing knowledge of physiological differences between the masticatory muscles. Further, single channel EMG devices can effectively measure the EMG activity of various oral tasks during wakefulness.

Abstract
It has been suggested that sleep bruxism may interrupt sleep continuity, hence potentially influencing sleep quality. The aim of this study was to systematically review the relationship between possible, probable, and definite sleep bruxism and sleep quality in otherwise healthy individuals. A systematic search on sleep bruxism and sleep quality was performed in seven databases until 19 December 2022. Eligible articles were screened, and quality assessment was performed via the Joanna Briggs Institute Scale. Of 3681 articles screened, 13 were included in this study. Of these, six evaluated the relationship between sleep quality and possible sleep bruxism, three with probable sleep bruxism, and four with definite sleep bruxism. An association between poor sleep quality and sleep bruxism was found among those individuals diagnosed with possible and probable sleep bruxism. However, the studies conducted in individuals with definite sleep bruxism failed to demonstrate any association. With more reliable measures to evaluate sleep bruxism, a relationship between sleep bruxism and sleep quality was not evident.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence and risk factors of sleep bruxism (SB) in adults with primary snoring (PS). METHODS This study included 292 adults with PS (140 males, 152 females; mean age ± standard deviation = 42.8 ± 12.2 years; mean body mass index ± standard deviation = 26.7 ± 4.7 kg/m2) without previous treatment for snoring. SB was diagnosed based on the frequency of the biomarker of SB: rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (SB when rhythmic masticatory muscle activity ≥ 2 episodes/h). Logistic regression was performed, with SB as the dependent variable and with age, sex, body mass index, and sleep- and respiratory-related polysomnographic parameters as the independent variables to identify the risk factors for SB. RESULTS The prevalence of SB was 44.6% in adults with PS. Younger age (odds ratio = 0.965 [0.944, 0.987]) and shorter total sleep time (odds ratio = 0.760 [0.609, 0.948]) significantly increased the risk of SB (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS SB is highly prevalent in adults with PS. Younger age and shorter sleep time are significant risk factors for SB in adults with PS. Abstract
PURPOSE The objective was the comparison of an occlusal device (OD), and sleep hygiene and progressive muscle relaxation (SH & PMR) on perceived stress and sleep bruxism activity (burst/episode and episode/hour) in participants with sleep bruxism. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-six participants with self-reported sleep bruxism were selected and randomly allocated into two groups: OD group or SH & PMR group. Assessment of perceived stress and sleep bruxism activity were the primary outcomes. The Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10 scale) was used to measure perceived stress and bruxism episodes/hour and bursts/episode recorded by electromyography of masseter and temporalis. These outcomes were assessed at baseline, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year. The paired t-test assessed changes in PSS-10 scores and sleep bruxism activity within the same group over different time points (baseline, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year). The unpaired t-test compared scores between two groups (OD and SH & PMR) at each time point to evaluate intervention differences. The chi-square test compared gender distribution between both groups. RESULTS PSS-10 scores were found to decrease with the OD at 1 month and 6 months compared to baseline and SH & PMR at all subsequent follow-ups. This decrease was not statistically significant (p > 0.05) between the OD and SH & PMR groups at all follow-ups. OD and SH & PMR significantly reduced bruxism episodes/hour and bursts/episode at all follow-ups (p < 0.05). There were no adverse effects related to any intervention. CONCLUSIONS The OD and SH & PMR both effectively reduced PSS-10 scores over 6 months and significantly decreased bruxism episodes and bursts per episode. Both methods are safe and effective for managing sleep bruxism and reducing stress.

Abstract
Rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) is a periodic muscle activity that characterises sleep bruxism (SB) events. These can occur as a single event, in pairs, or in clusters. Since RMMA episodes often occur in clusters and the relevance of this occurrence is unknown, we conducted a study to investigate the effect of RMMA clusters on sleep fragmentation and the severity of orofacial muscle pain. This study involved a secondary analysis using data from 184 adult subjects with orofacial muscle pain who underwent definitive polysomnography (PSG) for sleep bruxism diagnosis. Self-reported orofacial muscle pain (OFMP) was assessed using the numeric rating scale, and additional evaluation of side-to-side equivalence (symmetry) was described using a binary system. Among the 184 participants, 60.8% (n = 112) did not exhibit clusters and among the 72 participants with clusters, 36.1% (n = 26) and 63.9% (n = 46) were in the high and low RMMA frequency groups, respectively. The high SB group had significantly three times more phasic RMMA events than the noncluster group. A total of 89.67% (n = 165) of subjects reported orofacial muscle pain. While there was no difference in the severity of OFMP among groups, a significant decrease in symmetry between the severity of temporal muscle pain on the left and right sides was noted in the cluster group compared with the noncluster group. Clustering of RMMA events is associated with sleep fragmentation. The asymmetry of temporal muscle pain is related to the presence of RMMA clusters in sleep bruxism.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this 3D finite element analysis was to evaluate the biomechanical effects of different materials used to fabricate occlusal devices to achieve stress distribution in simulated abutment screws, dental implants, and peri-implant bone tissue in individuals who clench their teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eight 3D models simulated a posterior maxillary bone block with three external hexagon implants (Ø4.0 × 7.0 mm) supporting a 3-unit screw-retained metal-ceramic prosthesis with different crown connection (splinting), and the use of an occlusal device (OD). The OD was modeled to be 2-mm thick. ANSYS 19.2 software was used to generate the finite-element models in the pre-and post-processing phases. Simulated abutment screws and dental implants were evaluated by von Mises stress maps, and simulated bone was evaluated by maximum principal stress and microstrain maps by using a finite element software program. RESULTS The highest stress values in the dental implants and screws were observed in single crowns without OD (M1). Furthermore, the highest stress values and bone tissue strain were found in single crowns without OD (M1). The simulated material for the OD did not cause many discrepancies in terms of the stress magnitude in the simulated dental implant and abutment screw for both single and splinted crowns; however, more rigid materials exhibited lower stress values. CONCLUSION The use of OD was effective in reducing stress in the simulated implants and abutment screws and stress and strain in the simulated bone tissue. The material used to simulate the OD influenced the biomechanical behavior of implant-supported fixed prostheses, whereas splints with rigid materials such as PEEK and PMMA exhibited better biomechanical behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Parkinson's disease (PD) poses a range of challenges, including oral health issues, that significantly impact the patient's quality of life. Despite growing awareness of PD, oral health receives limited attention. To shed light on this matter, this personal scoping review explores the perspectives of Professor K.G. Raphael, who is both a professional and a PD patient, on various aspects of oral health in PD. METHODS Through semi-structured interviews, Prof. Raphael shares her insights on the complexities of oral health as a PD patient to compose an agenda for oral health care, research, and education, for PD patients. RESULTS She emphasises the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and education. Additionally, Prof. Raphael identifies crucial research areas, such as exploring the role of the oral microbiome and assessing the impact of exercise on oral health in PD. CONCLUSION This study resulted in agendas to improve oral health care, research and education, advocating for a holistic approach to enhance PD patients' well-being. Despite its limitations, this study highlights the imperative of integrating oral health into the broader management of PD, emphasising interdisciplinary collaboration and patient empowerment.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the global prevalence of sleep bruxism and awake bruxism in pediatric and adult populations. Methods: This systematic review was conducted by analyzing studies published from 2003 to 2023. The following keyword combination was utilized: prevalence, epidemiology, population, and bruxism. The PubMed database was analyzed, supplemented by manual searches using the Google search. Additionally, the snowballing procedure method was applied. A double assessment of the quality of publications was carried out to preserve the highest possible quality of evidence (e.g., Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist). Analyses were conducted using the R statistical language. Results: The global bruxism (sleep and awake) prevalence is 22.22%. The global sleep bruxism prevalence is 21% and awake prevalence is 23%. The occurrence of sleep bruxism, based on polysomnography, was estimated at 43%. The highest prevalence of sleep bruxism was observed in North America at 31%, followed by South America at 23%, Europe at 21%, and Asia at 19%. The prevalence of awake bruxism was highest in South America at 30%, followed by Asia at 25% and Europe at 18%. Conclusions: One in four individuals may experience awake bruxism. Bruxism is a significant factor among women. It was observed that age is a significant factor for the occurrence of sleep bruxism in women. Among the limitations of the study is the lack of analysis of the prevalence of bruxism in Africa and Australia due to not collecting an adequate sample for analysis. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep-related bruxism (SB) is the habit of grinding or clenching the teeth during sleep, mediated by the non-peripheral central nervous system. PURPOSE The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to evaluate associations between SB, microarousals and oxyhaemoglobin desaturations and to compare the frequency of SB and microarousals in sleep stages, in an apnoeic population. METHODS Two hundred and forty individuals composed the sample, who underwent a single full-night polysomnography. Self-reports and clinical inspections were not considered for assessing SB. The polysomnographic assessment of SB was performed using electrodes placed on masseter muscles and chin. SB was defined as more than two events of rhythmic masticatory muscle activity per hour of sleep. Microarousals were considered when there were abrupt changes in electroencephalogram frequencies, without complete awakening, lasting from 3 to 15 s. Oxyhaemoglobin desaturations were defined as significant drops (≥3%) in basal oxygen saturations. With these data, SB, microarousals and oxyhaemoglobin desaturations were evaluated and submitted to statistical analysis. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were observed between bruxers and non-bruxers when comparing the rates of microarousals (p < .001) and oxyhaemoglobin desaturations (p = .038). There was a higher number of SB and microarousals in NREM (non-rapid eye movement) two sleep stage (p < 0.001). Bruxers had a greater risk of higher numbers of microarousals (OR = 1.023; p = .003), which did not occur for oxyhaemoglobin desaturations (OR = 0.998; p = .741). CONCLUSIONS A higher number of microarousals presents relationship with SB; associations between SB and oxyhaemoglobin desaturations remained inconclusive; higher frequency of SB and microarousals was observed in NREM 2 sleep stage.

Abstract
The implementation of restrictive measures during the pandemic drastically changed the routine and habits of the population. In the academic sphere, the sudden closure of universities difficulted any advance planning. The objective of this study was to verify the effects of the pandemic on the routine, physical and mental health of students at a public university in southern Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study that applied a questionnaire from May to August 2020. The target population comprised 528 undergraduates. The questionnaire addressed questions about sociodemographic characteristics, physical and mental health. A response was obtained from 406 participants. During the quarantine period evaluated, the main results were: 66.2% reported worsening of anxiety symptoms; 57.6% declared that their physical health was "reasonable" to "bad". As for the quality of sleep there was an increase in 98.8% in the responses "bad sleep quality" and "very bad sleep quality"; increase in 26.6% for presence bruxism; 12.5% for orofacial pain, 3.8% for headache. It is concluded that there were several negative effects, among these effects, it was observed higher levels of anxiety, worsening physical health and quality of sleep, increase in the prevalence of bruxism, as well as the presence of orofacial pain and headache.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The demand for orthodontic treatment with aligners has recently increased, but their effects on awake bruxism (AB) behaviours have to be evaluated yet. OBJECTIVES This investigation assessed if aligners can affect oral behaviours (i.e. tooth contact, teeth clenching, teeth grinding and mandible bracing) that are related with the AB spectrum. METHODS The investigation was performed in a sample of 32 consecutively recruited healthy adult patients who required orthodontic treatment. The study protocol involved three different sessions of 1-week monitoring without aligners, with passive aligners and with active aligners, respectively. All patients underwent an orthodontic treatment with aligners and used a smartphone-based application for a real-time report (i.e. ecological momentary assessment [EMA]) of their AB behaviours. Recording time was set from 8.00 to 12.30 and from 14.30 to 22.00. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the average reported frequency for each activity within and between the different sessions. The coefficient of variation (CV) was assessed to evaluate daily fluctuations within the 7 days monitoring periods. RESULTS The average reported frequency of the relaxed condition was 64.9%, 63.0% and 60.0% during the sessions without aligners, with passive aligners and with active aligners, respectively. ANOVA showed no significant differences in any of the AB behaviours within (i.e. between 7 days of evaluation) and between the monitoring sessions (i.e. before orthodontic treatment, with passive aligners, with active aligners). No sex differences were detected, except for the 'tooth contact' report that showed a higher frequency in females. CONCLUSION The impact of our results in the orthodontic field is not negligible; clinicians can find support for the hypothesis that from a global point of view, wearing or not wearing aligners (passive and/or active) does not influence the frequency of AB behaviours at the short term.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate the effects on bite force and muscle thickness of the botulinum toxin (BoNT) injection for patients with sleep bruxism (SB) by comparing injections into the masseter muscle only and both the masseter and the anterior belly of the digastric muscle (ABDM) in a clinical trial. METHODS Twelve SB patients received BoNT-A injections using US-guided techniques into the masseter muscle only (Group A), while the remaining 12 SB patients received injections into both the masseter and ABDM (Group B). Bite force and muscle thickness were measured before injection, as well as 1 and 2 months after injection. RESULTS The bite force and masseter muscle thickness decreased in both Group A and Group B before injection, and at 1 and 2 months after injection. However, there was no significant difference (p > .05, repeated measures analysis of variance) between the two groups, and there was also no significant difference in ABDM thickness (p > .05, repeated measures analysis of variance). CONCLUSION This study is the first to assess the short-term effects of BoNT injected into ABDM for SB control. Results show no influence on SB reduction, suggesting the need for further research on BoNT's effectiveness in controlling intense ABDM contractions during sleep and assessing suprahyoid muscle potential impact on rhythmic masticatory muscle activity occurrence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Few studies investigated the influence of oral parafunctional habits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since some studies have demonstrated that signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD), as well as psychological alterations, increased during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the aim of this study was to investigate whether social isolation is a situation that increases the prevalence of oral parafunctional habits. METHODS This was an observational case-control study. An online survey with questions about TMD symptoms (Diagnostic Criteria Symptom Questionnaire) and oral parafunctional habits (Oral Behaviours Checklist [OBC]) was administered to Brazilian residents at two different times (2020 and 2021). The participants were divided according to social isolation practices into study groups (GI: 2020, n = 507; GIII: 2021, n = 282) and control groups (GII: 2020, n = 98; GIV: 2021, n = 202). RESULT In each group, we evaluated the association of the frequency of oral parafunctional habits with the symptoms of TMD, and we observed that individuals with a greater presence of painful TMD present a greater number of oral parafunctional habits. Despite the literature showing that individuals who practiced social isolation developed more oral parafunctional habits, when analysing the association of the OBC questions in Groups GI × GII and GIII × GIV, only 'sustained talking' (p = .0022) and 'hold telephone between your hand and shoulders' (p = .0124) showed a significant difference in GI × GII. Kendall's coefficient of concordance revealed that there was a very strong concordance (GI × GII 0.9515 (p = .0087) and GIII × GIV 0.9655 (p = .0074)) between the ranks of the analysed oral parafunctional habits in all groups. CONCLUSION We can state that Individuals who practiced social isolation did not present more oral parafunctional habits than individuals who did not.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between diurnal masseter muscle activity and awareness of diurnal awake bruxism (d-AB) by conducting a comparative analysis of electromyographic (EMG) data from individuals with and without awareness of diurnal awake bruxism (d-AB), utilizing EMG data gathered from multiple subjects. METHODS Unilateral masseter electromyography (EMG) recordings were performed during the daytime using an ultraminiature wearable EMG device. A total of 119 participants (59 with awareness of diurnal tooth clenching [d-TC] and 60 without awareness of d-TC) were included. Waveforms longer than 0.25 s with the two amplitude conditions, exceeding twice the baseline and >5% of maximum voluntary clenching, were extracted. In addition, the number of bursts and episodes (groups of bursts), burst duration, and burst peak amplitude were calculated for each participant. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the EMG parameters between the groups with and without awareness of d-TC. Additionally, the frequency distribution of the number of EMG waveforms exhibited wide ranges and substantial overlap between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS The variability in the number of bursts and episodes, burst peak amplitude, and burst duration among subjects suggests the need for an objective classification of d-AB severity based on EMG values. The absence of significant differences and large overlap in frequency distributions between the groups with and without awareness of d-TC indicate difficulty in predicting muscle activity solely based on awareness of d-AB.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review the literature regarding the concordance of sleep bruxism (SB) between monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins. METHODS The registration for this systematic review was accomplished in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO, No. CRD42021251751). As of July 2022, four databases were searched, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science, as well as the grey literature in Google Scholar and OpenGrey. Observational studies evaluating SB in MZ and DZ twins of any age and sex were included. For the evaluation of the risk of bias, the Joanna Briggs checklist was utilized. The certainty of evidence was assessed via the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system. Pooled and subgroup meta-analyses were performed to estimate concordance of SB between twins (p < 0.05). RESULTS In total, 3,155 records were identified. In the qualitative analysis, eleven studies were included; of these, seven were included in the meta-analysis. The majority of the articles exhibited a low risk of bias (63.6%). Greater SB concordance was observed between MZ twins than between DZ twins in the analysis of general concordance (OR = 1.47; 95% CI = 1.07-2.02) and also positive concordance (OR = 1.53; 95% CI = 1.29-1.81). Within the subgroup analyses, the significance of the findings remained only for the reported/self-reported SB regarding general concordance (OR = 1.44; 95% CI = 1.07-1.95) and positive concordance (OR = 1.55; 95% CI = 1.28-1.88). Low certainty of the evidence was observed for the general concordance analysis, while moderate certainty was observed for the positive concordance. CONCLUSION There was a higher concordance of SB in MZ twins compared to DZ twins, indicating a possible genetic influence on the condition's occurrence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of the Coronavirus pandemic on the report of psychological status, bruxism, and TMD symptoms. METHODS An online survey was drafted to report the presence of psychological status, bruxism activities, and reported symptoms of TMDs perceived during the COVID-19 pandemic in a population of 506 individuals. RESULTS Mental health is not positive during the Coronavirus pandemic: almost half the subjects reported an increase in bruxism behaviors, while up to one-third reported an increase in their symptoms involving the TMJ and jaw muscles. Specifically, 36% and 32.2% of participants reported increased pain in the TMJ and facial muscles, respectively, and almost 50% of the subjects also reported more frequent migraines and/or headaches. CONCLUSION Increased psychosocial distress during the COVID-19 pandemic can increase the frequency of TMD symptoms and bruxism behaviors, which, in turn, constitute a triangle of mutually interacting factors with the psychological and emotional status.

Abstract
AIM Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) comprise ailments involving the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint) and its associated anatomical structures. The complexity involved in TMD is primarily due to its broad spectrum of conditions, clinical signs and symptoms variability, and multifactorial etiology. Considering the above, the present study was performed to help understand the prevailing knowledge and awareness of TMD among Indian dentists in the context of the new specialty "orofacial pain". SETTINGS AND DESIGN Questinnaire study and review. MATERIALS AND METHODS The questionnaire was distributed using a web-based portal nationwide among Indian dentists. Dentists were invited to participate, clearly stating that the intent and purpose of the questionnaire was to record the existing knowledge and awareness concerning temporomandibular disorders among Indian dentists. The questionnaire was segregated into three sections: pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of TMDs. The questions were recorded using a Likert three-point scale (1=agree; 2=disagree; 3=not aware). 310 dentists participated in the survey, among which 105 were general dentists (BDS [Bachelor of Dental Surgery] graduates), and 205 were dentists with specialist training (MDS [Masters of Dental Surgery] graduates). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED The results obtained from the study participants was used to calculate the percentage and frequency, following which tabulations were made based on graduate type and clinical experience. The values obtained from all three sections were recorded, and the responses were analysed using Pearson's Chi-Square test with statistical significance kept at P < 0.05. RESULTS Results of the study disclosed that only 58.1% of general dentists and 46.8% of specialists were confident in handling temporomandibular disorder patients. Splint therapy was the preferred treatment modality for general dentists, whereas dentists with specialist training preferred occlusal rehabilitation. CONCLUSION The results of the current survey indicate that Indian dentists lack sufficient training in dental schools on all three sections and face difficulty diagnosing and treating TMDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The noteworthy correlation between bite force and masticatory performance emphasizes its significance as a meaningful and objective method for assessing oral function. Furthermore, in the study of bruxism, the measurement of intraoral bite force assumes critical importance. Given the importance of assessing occlusal forces and bite force, this systematic review aims to assess the efficacy of wireless sensors in measuring these forces. METHODS The search methodology employed in this systematic review adhered to the guidelines outlined by PRISMA. The strategy involved the exploration of various databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS and SCIELO. An assessment tool was employed to evaluate the bias risk and study quality. RESULTS This systematic review encompassed six prospective clinical studies involving a total of 89 participants. Wireless sensors for measuring occlusal forces and bite forces were predominantly employed in healthy adults or individuals with bruxism, along with children undergoing orthodontic treatment. All wireless sensors employed in the studies underwent validation and reproducibility assessments, affirming their reliability. The findings indicated that all wireless sensors exhibited efficacy in detecting occlusal forces and bite forces. CONCLUSION Wireless sensors offer real-time monitoring of occlusal and bite forces, aiding in understanding force distribution and identifying bruxism patterns. Despite limited studies on their application, these sensors contribute to evolving insights. Integration into clinical practice requires careful consideration of factors like calibration and patient compliance. Ongoing research is crucial to address limitations and enhance the efficacy of wireless sensors in measuring occlusal and bite forces and managing bruxism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) concept was the basis for developing a smartphone application for the real-time report of awake bruxism (AB) activities. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of the EMA with a randomised controlled trial designed to compare the frequency of AB reported in two separate single observation points between a group of students monitored over time with an EMA smartphone application and a non-EMA monitored group. METHODS Sixty-four (N = 64) dental students (22.3 YO [±2.6]; 52F; 12 M) answered the Oral Behaviour Checklist (OBC-1) and were randomised into an EMA-group (EG) and control group (CG). EG were monitored with a smartphone application for AB report during seven consecutive days and completed three EMA monitoring periods (EMA-1, 2 and 3) at one-month intervals. After the third period (EMA-3), both EG and CG answered again the OBC (OBC-2). Descriptive statistics were performed to characterise the sample. Pearson's chi-squared test, Fixer Exact test and post hoc Z test with Bonferroni correction were performed. The study hypothesis was that EMA could influence the AB reported by the participants because it implies an increase in the awareness, self-recognition, and self-control of bruxism behaviours. The level of significance was set at p < .05. RESULT The percentage of participants who changed the report of the activity of clenching their teeth while awake between OBC-1 and OBC-2 was significantly higher among participants in EG, when compared to CG (p = .027). For all other behaviours reported the within- and between-group differences from OBC-1 to OBC-2 were not significant. Clenching and bracing were the most frequently reported, whilst grinding was the less frequent behaviour. CONCLUSION A smartphone-based EMA approach demonstrated be useful to monitor AB over time, increasing individual's awareness, particularly to bracing and clenching behaviours.

Abstract
Background: Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most common primary headache. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep bruxism (SB) are two of the most common sleep disorders; however, the relationship between TTH, OSA, and SB has not been conclusively proved in the literature. The objective of our study was to estimate potential associations with OSA and SB in TTH subjects. Methods: 108 adult individuals who underwent polysomnography (vPSG) were included, and the group was divided into two subgroups: TTH (n = 34) and control (n = 74). The International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) guidelines were used to diagnose TTH. OSA and SB diagnoses were based on vPSG examination with electromyographic (EMG) recordings and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) criteria. The results were analyzed, where p < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: In the TTH group, the incidence of SB was more than two times lower than the control (OR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.17-0.96, p < 0.05). However, the incidence of severe SB (BEI > 4) was similar in the TTH and control groups (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.21-1.35, p > 0.05). Additionally, phasic and tonic SB episodes were less frequent in the TTH group compared to the controls (p < 0.05). The mean apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was not significantly different between the TTH and control groups (p > 0.05). The sleep architecture and respiratory disturbances did not differ between the examined groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: SB is not a risk factor for TTH. Moreover, severe SB is not connected with TTH. OSA is not a risk factor for TTH. Sleep quality did not differ between both groups during PSG; therefore, TTH may not change sleep structure. The mechanism of these findings is still unclear, and further studies should explain in detail the association between TTH and OSA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess whether awake bruxism and masticatory muscle activity could be related to external root resorption (ERR) in second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty patients, with requests for a cone-beam, computed tomography, were divided into two groups: ERR (patients with ERR in the second molar, n = 30), and control group (n = 30). Awake bruxism was assessed through the Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC) and an ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to assess the masseter and anterior temporal muscle function. Normality and homogeneity of variances were demonstrated. Descriptive analysis was performed, using the T-test and Chi-square test to compare the characteristics of the groups. A multiple regression model was performed. RESULTS The ERR group presented more non-functional oral activities related to awake bruxism than the control group, according to OBC (p = 0.027) and EMA (p = 0.035). In addition, the ERR group had higher EMG activity than the control group in rest and isotonic protocols (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Awake bruxism and greater masticatory muscle activity seem to be related to the presence of ERR in second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The results of the present study can reinforce the theory that triggering ERR in the second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars may be related to mechanical forces coming from the masticatory function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this review was to analyze mechanical and biological properties of resin materials used with subtractive or additive techniques for oral appliances fabrication and compare them to those conventionally manufactured. MATERIALS AND METHODS The protocol was registered online at Open Science Framework (OSF) registries ( https://osf.io/h5es3 ) and the study was based on the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis protocols (PRISMA-P). An electronic search was conducted on MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science from 1 February 2022 to 1 May 2022. INCLUSION CRITERIA in vitro and in vivo studies published in the last 10 years, with CAD-CAM or 3D printed resins for occlusal splints. Data considered homogenous were subjected to meta-analysis (95% confidence interval [CI]; α = 0.05) with Stata17 statistical software. Since all variables were continuous, the Hedge g measure was calculated. A fixed-effects model was used for I2 = 0%, while statistical analysis was conducted using a random-effects model with I2 > 0%. RESULTS 13 studies were included after full-text reading. The mechanical properties most studied were wear, flexural strength, surface hardness and surface roughness, while only 1 study investigated biological properties, performing the XTT viability assay. For the meta-analysis, only surface roughness, volume loss, and flexural strength were selected. Considering surface roughness, the subtractive specimen had a lower average value compared to traditional ones (Hedge's g with 95% CI = -1.25[ -1.84, - 0.66]). No significant difference was detected in terms of volume loss (P > 0.05) between the groups (Hedge's g with 95% CI = -0.01 [-2.71, - 2.68]). While flexural strength was higher in the control group (Hedge's g with 95% CI = 2.32 [0.10-4.53]). CONCLUSION 3D printed materials showed properties comparable to conventional resins, while milled splint materials have not shown better mechanical performance compared with conventional heat-cured acrylic resin. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) have great potential and needs to be further investigated. Biological tests on oral cell populations are needed to confirm the long-term biocompatibility of these materials. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The use of "mixed splints" combining different materials needs to be improved and evaluated in future research to take full advantage of different characteristics and properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although awake bruxism is associated with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) as well as head and neck pain, the effects of physical therapy and bruxism education to address these factors have not been investigated. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of oro-facial manual therapy and bruxism neuroscience education (BNE) on awake bruxism over a 3-week period with an open-ended follow-up questionnaire after 3 months. METHODS Subjects (n = 28) were randomly allocated to one of two groups, an intervention group and a control group. Data regarding disability, function and pain were collected pre- and post-assessment, with all measures administered in a single-blind fashion. Participants in both groups received six treatment sessions during this period. In addition to manual therapy, participants were provided with information on the neurophysiological mechanisms of bruxism and contributing factors. Individual behavioural guidelines and daily exercises were determined in consultation with the therapist. An introduction to a bruxism specific app (Brux.App) was also provided, which all participants used as an adjunct to their treatment. RESULTS The intervention group demonstrated notable improvement as indicated by their scores in the Neck Disability Index (NDI) (p = .008), Pain Disability Index (PDI) (p = .007) and Jaw Disability List (JDL) (p = .03). Furthermore, clinical assessments of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) revealed a significant progress in terms of mouth opening (p = .03) and lateral jaw movement (laterotrusion) (p = .03). The mechanical pain threshold (PTT) of both the masseter (p = .02) and temporalis muscle (p = .05) also showed significant improvement. At 3-month follow-up, the questionnaire revealed that the majority of the intervention group (13/15, 87%) reported a benefit from the treatment. CONCLUSION The reduction in pain and disability together with improvement in function and increased coping suggest a potential modification of awake bruxism through specialised musculoskeletal intervention and BNE tailored to the individual patient.

Abstract
The World Health Organization recognizes sexual health as not merely the absence of disease, but a state of physical, mental, and social well-being in relation to one's sexuality. Achieving sexual satisfaction is pivotal for many individuals, as it significantly contributes to their quality of life. Among various sexual disorders, erectile dysfunction (ED) is notably prevalent, affecting an estimated 10-20 million men in the United States alone. This condition impacts not just the person experiencing it but also significantly influences their intimate connections with partners. Although the causes of ED are multifactorial, recent research highlights a compelling association between sleep disorders, such as sleep deprivation, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and insomnia, and the incidence of ED. Furthermore, engaging in night work has been observed to exacerbate the risk of developing ED. One common sleep disorder, sleep related bruxism (SRB), despite its prevalence, has not generally been associated with ED. However, there is some interesting evidence hinting at a potential relationship, including a few studies reporting a high prevalence of ED in individuals with SRB. This review delves into the epidemiological, etiological, and mechanistic links between ED and SRB, aiming to uncover potential intersections between these two conditions. These insights could pave the way for innovative research avenues, possibly exploring treatments like vasodilation medication, that might concurrently address both ED and SRB.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The co-occurrence of bruxism, temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), and headache is common in patients. However, there is conflicting evidence regarding whether this association is simply a result of their high prevalence or whether there are indeed causal relationships. This review provides an overview of the current state of research while taking into account the controversies surrounding research methods, particularly in definitions and diagnostic standards. Bruxism-defined as repetitive jaw muscle activity during sleep or wakefulness-is not a painful disorder but may-particularly in co-occurrence with TMD-worsen pre-existing headache. It seems important to differentiate between sleep and awake bruxism because of different impact on pathophysiological processes in different primary headache disorders such as migraine and tension-type headache. Temporomandibular disorder is a heterogenous entity with both myofascial and arthrogenous types of pain in addition to nonpainful disorders. Research suggests a correlation between TMD pain and migraine, as well as between awake bruxism and tension-type headache. However, psychosocial factors may act as confounders in these relationships. Determining causality is challenging because of the limited number of experimental and clinical studies conducted on this topic. The main finding is an apparent lack of consensus on the definition and assessment criteria for bruxism. Treatment wise, it is important to differentiate all 3 conditions because treatment of one condition may have an effect on the other 2 without proving causality. For future research, it is crucial to establish greater consistency and applicability in diagnostic procedures and definitions. In addition, more experimental and clinical studies investigating the question of causality are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate if there are dose-response relationships between self-reported waking-state oral behaviours, including awake bruxism, and three indicators of psychological distress (depression, anxiety, stress). METHODS The study sample consisted of 1,886 patients with function-dependent TMD pain. Relationships between six non-functional and six functional waking-state oral behaviours, scored on a 5-point ordinal scale, and the psychological factors were investigated using ordinal logistic regression. RESULTS Mean age was 42.4 (±15.3) years, 78.7% being female. The odds of reporting the higher categories of non-functional oral behaviours depended on the severity of depression, anxiety, and stress. Most OR coefficients followed a quadratic dose-response distribution, the others increased linearly as the severity of the psychological scales increased. Almost no such associations were found with normal jaw function behaviours. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, it may be concluded that non-functional waking-state oral behaviours, including awake bruxism, and psychological distress have a dose-response relationship, with higher levels of distress being associated with higher reports of oral behaviours.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the frequency of awake bruxism (AB) behaviors in a group of undergraduate dentistry students and correlate it with the status of anxiety and depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS The frequency of five oral behaviors (i.e., relaxed jaw muscle, teeth contact, mandible bracing, teeth clenching, teeth grinding) was evaluated using a smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) approach. The anxiety and depression status was investigated with the four-item patient health questionnaire for anxiety and depression (PHQ-4). ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc test was used to assess the difference in frequency of AB behaviors among the four PHQ-4 groups. RESULTS Among the four groups, there was a statistically significant difference in the frequency of relaxed jaw muscle, teeth contact, mandible bracing, and teeth clenching, but not for teeth grinding. CONCLUSION Based on this cross-sectional study's findings, psyche seems to have a determinant impact on AB behaviors, which is significantly higher in individuals with anxiety and depression traits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the effects of aligners on masseter muscle activity by using an electromyographic device in the home environment. METHODS The study was performed on healthy patients who required orthodontic treatment. Three different 24 h-EMG recording sessions were performed in different conditions: without aligners, with passive aligners, and with active aligners. The non-functional MMA work index (nfMMA-WI) and the non-functional MMA time index (nfMMA-TI) for both awake and sleep hours were assessed. ANOVA test was used to compare the average activity during the three recording conditions. RESULTS On average, a total recording time of 204.7 ± 7.9 hours were provided for each patient. For most patients, ANOVA test showed an absence of significant differences between the recording sessions. CONCLUSIONS The impact of our results is not negligible: clinicians can find remarkable support to the hypothesis that the use of aligners affects the MMA only in a minority of subjects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study presents a scoping review to determine the association between tooth wear and bruxism. DATA A protocol was developed a priori (Open Science Framework (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/CS7JX)). Established scoping review methods were used for screening, data extraction, and synthesis. Risk of bias was assessed using JBI tools. Direct associations between tooth wear and bruxism were assessed. SOURCES Embase, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Cochrane, and PubMed were searched. STUDY SELECTION Any clinical study containing tooth wear and bruxism assessment done on humans in any language was included. Animal, in-vitro studies and case reports were excluded. CONCLUSIONS Thirty publications reporting on the association between tooth wear and bruxism were included. The majority of publications were cross-sectional studies (90%) while only three were longitudinal (10%). Eleven papers assessed definitive bruxism for analysis (instrumental tools), one paper assessed probable bruxism (clinical inspection with self-report) and eighteen assessed possible bruxism (self-report). Of the eleven papers assessing definitive bruxism, eight also reported outcomes of non-instrumental tools. Tooth wear was mostly scored using indexes. Most studies reported no or weak associations between tooth wear and bruxism, except for the studies done on cervical tooth wear. When bruxism assessment was done through self-report, more often an association was found. Studies using multivariate analyses did not find an association between tooth wear and bruxism, except the cervical wear studies. Evidence shows inconclusive results as to whether bruxism and tooth wear are related or not. Therefore, well-designed longitudinal trials are needed to address this gap in the literature. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Based on the evidence, dental clinicians should not infer bruxism activity solely on the presence of tooth wear.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Awake Bruxism (AB) management includes cognitive and behavioural changes. Digital and analogic tools can be used to remind the individual to control/avoid AB behaviours. However, no study addressed both tools together. OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of the combination of digital (smartphone application) and analogic (adhesive reminders) tools versus digital tool alone for AB management. METHODS Seventy-two individuals diagnosed with probable AB were divided into 3 groups: Group 1 (n = 24), used both digital and analogic tools during 30 days; Group 2 (n = 24), used only a digital tool during 30 days and Group 3 (n = 24), used only a digital tool for the first 15 days and then added the analogic tool for 15 days. The AB frequency was measured in real-time with a smartphone app, which sent alerts asking the individuals if they were doing any AB behaviours (bracing, teeth contact, clenching or grinding). Groups were compared using one-way ANOVA and before-after adding an analogic tool (group 3) by paired t-test, considering α = 0.05. RESULTS All groups showed a decrease in AB behaviours at the end of the evaluation period. Group 1 (digital and analogic tools) showed the lowest average of AB behaviours among all groups; however, statistically significant differences were found only for the comparison between groups 1 and 2. In group 3, a significantly greater reduction in AB behaviours was found after combining both approaches. CONCLUSION The combination of digital and analogic tools showed the greatest reduction of AB frequency and can be recommended for AB control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate, qualify, and summarize evidence presented in systematic reviews (SR) on treatments for bruxism. METHODS The overview was conducted using the PICO strategy: children, adolescents, and adults with bruxism (P) were submitted to different treatments (I) compared to other treatments, placebo, or no treatment (C) in order to evaluate incidence, prevalence, and number of episodes of bruxism (O). The search was carried out in six databases and gray literature up to July 2023. Data were extracted, and the ROBS tool was used, followed by a descriptive synthesis of the results. RESULTS A total of 31 SR were included. Sixteen showed a positive effect on episodes of bruxism (BE), while two had negative, one had neutral, and nine had inconclusive effects. Using the risk of bias in systematic reviews tool (ROBIS), risk of bias varied from low (n = 23) to high (n = 5) among the SR. Pharmacological treatment, oral rehabilitation, and other therapeutic approaches presented inconclusive or negative effects on BE, while oral appliances showed controversial effects. Biofeedback, physical therapy, laser therapy, and botulinum toxin showed positive effects on the reduction of BE. CONCLUSION Biofeedback, physical therapy, laser therapy, and botulinum toxin showed positive effects on the reduction of BE; there is still a lack of studies to support the safe and long-term use of these therapies. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES We aimed to develop a predictive model for the outcome of bruxism treatments using ultrasonography (USG)-based machine learning (ML) techniques. This study is a quantitative research study (predictive modeling study) in which different treatment methods applied to bruxism patients are evaluated through artificial intelligence. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study population comprised 102 participants with bruxism in three treatment groups: Manual therapy, Manual therapy and Kinesio Tape or Botulinum Toxin-A injection. USG imaging was performed on the masseter muscle to calculate muscle thickness, and pain thresholds were evaluated using an algometer. A radiomics platform was utilized to handle imaging and clinical data, as well as to perform a subsequent radiomics statistical analysis. RESULTS The area under the curve (AUC) values of all machine learning methods ranged from 0.772 to 0.986 for the training data and from 0.394 to 0.848 for the test data. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) led to excellent discrimination between bruxism and normal patients from USG images. Radiomics characteristics in pre-treatment ultrasound scans of patients, showing coarse and nonuniform muscles, were associated with a greater chance of less effective pain reduction outcomes. CONCLUSIONS This study has introduced a machine learning model using SVM analysis on ultrasound (USG) images for bruxism patients, which can detect masseter muscle changes on USG. Support Vector Machine regression analysis showed the combined ML models can also predict the outcome of the pain reduction.

Abstract
Introduction: Comorbid insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (COMISA) is not a well-identified sleep disorder, despite having a significant impact on health. This study investigates the relationship between sleep bruxism (SB) and sleep architecture in patients with COMISA, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and in those without any sleep disorders. Methods: 119 patients were included in the study and divided into three groups: OSA, COMISA, and a control group. Polysomnographic (PSG) examination provided parameters related to sleep architecture, OSA, and characteristics of SB. Results: The bruxism episode index (BEI) and other SB parameters were not found to be statistically different between the three groups (p > 0.05). There was no statistical difference in measured sleep architecture between the COMISA and OSA groups (p > 0.05). In comparison to the control group, participants in the COMISA group were found to have an increased apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), oxygen desaturation index (ODI), respiratory disturbance index (RDI), all arousals (AA), and respiratory arousals (RA) (p < 0.05). Among COMISA patients, AA and RA were shown to have a positive linear correlation with the number of bradycardia events per hour (r = 0.49, r = 0.48, p < 0.05). Conclusions: SB does not occur in patients with COMISA more frequently than in patients with OSA or those without any sleep disorders. PSG parameters are not specific for COMISA; therefore, in order to differentiate this disorder from OSA alone, a comprehensive patient assessment has to be performed.

Abstract
Intracranial pressure is one of the determinants of sympathetic activities, and sleep bruxism is associated with increased sympathetic activities. This study aimed to investigate effects of the low Fowler's sleep position and methazolamide treatment on the occurrence of rhythmic masticatory muscle activities/sleep bruxism episodes in patients with sleep bruxism in a randomized controlled trial. Polysomnographic recordings were performed on the patients with sleep bruxism sleeping in the low Fowler's (15°-30°) or supine position (n = 11), and with methazolamide or placebo treatment (100 mg, 3-4 hr before bedtime, P.O., n = 9), and changes in sleep variables and heart rate variance during sleep in the low Fowler's position or with methazolamide treatment were determined. Sleep bruxism index, number of masseter muscle electromyographic bursts per hour of sleep, ratio of rhythmic masticatory muscle activities/sleep bruxism duration to the total sleep duration, index of total limb movements, index of limb movements with rhythmic masticatory muscle activities, and number of sleep bruxism clusters per hour of sleep in the low Fowler's position and after methazolamide intake were significantly smaller (p < 0.05-0.001) than those in the supine position and after placebo intake, respectively. The low-frequency heart rate variance powers during non-rapid eye movement sleep stage 2 (N2) in the low Fowler's position and with methazolamide treatment were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those during sleep in the supine position and with placebo treatment, respectively. In conclusion, sleep in the low Fowler's position and methazolamide treatment were associated with significant decreases in the occurrence of rhythmic masticatory muscle activities/sleep bruxism episodes, which might be due to a reduction in intracranial pressure and sympathetic activities mainly during non-rapid eye movement sleep stage 2.

Abstract
Dental wear arises from mechanical (attrition or abrasion) and chemical (erosion) factors. Despite its prevalence and clinical significance, accurately measuring and understanding its causes remain challenging in everyday practice. This one-year study with 39 participants involved comprehensive examinations and full-arch intraoral scans at the start and after 12 months. Volume loss exceeding 100 µ on each tooth's surfaces (buccal, lingual/palatine and incisal/occlusal) was measured by comparing three-dimensional scans from both time points. This study also assessed factors such as abrasion and erosion through clinical exams and questionnaires. There were no significant differences in dental wear in participants with sleep bruxism. However, noticeable wear occurred in the front teeth of those with waking bruxism and joint-related symptoms. Increased wear was associated with frequent consumption of acidic drinks, regular swimming, dry mouth, nocturnal drooling and heartburn, while no significant wear was found in patients with reflux. The used methodology proved effective in accurately assessing the progression of dental wear, which is important as many patients may initially be asymptomatic. The variability observed in dental wear patterns underscores the need to develop specific software applications that allow immediate and efficient comparison of wear areas based on extensive analysis of patient databases.

Abstract
Sleep bruxism, characterized by involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth during sleep, poses significant challenges in management due to its potential to induce temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) and other related symptoms. The use of Botulinum toxin Type A (BoNT-A), also known as Botox®, has been proposed as a therapeutic intervention. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BoNT-A in the management of sleep bruxism, focusing on pain reduction, improvement in jaw function, reduction in bruxism episodes, and the incidence of adverse effects. An exhaustive search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases up to January 2024, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines. Nine randomized clinical trials (RCTs) involving 137 participants were analyzed for efficacy and safety outcomes. The studies demonstrated a significant reduction in mean pain scores (from 7.1 to 0.2 at 6 months and 1 year post-treatment in one study) and a notable decrease in the number of bruxism events (from 4.97/h to 1.70/h in the BoNT-A group in another study). Additionally, improvements were observed in jaw stiffness and total sleep time. Adverse effects varied but were generally mild and transient, including injection site pain in 20% of participants in one study and cosmetic changes in smile in 15.4% of patients in another. These findings suggest that BoNT-A injections may provide some benefits for treating nocturnal bruxism, potentially reducing TMD symptoms like pain and improving jaw function. However, these findings are preliminary due to variability in study designs and the absence of detailed statistical analysis.

Abstract
Introduction Causal relationships between psychopathological symptoms, personality traits, coping mechanisms, and sleep bruxism (SB) were studied in the past, giving inconsistent results mostly based on self-assessment evaluations. This polysomnography-based cross-sectional study aimed to explore the relationships between severe SB, personality traits (according to the Big Five model), and coping strategies with objective polysomnographic verification. Methodology The study included 66 participants divided into severe SB (SSB) (n=32) and no or mild SB (n=34) groups based on video-polysomnography performed in the sleep laboratory. Questionnaire assessment included the use of the Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Mini-COPE, International Personality Item Pool Big Five Markers 20-Item version, and Oral Behavior Checklist. Results Participants with SSB presented with fewer self-reported anxiety (p=0.008) and depressive (p=0.01) symptoms than the non- or mild-SB groups. The SSB group scored significantly higher in Big Five personal traits such as extraversion (p=0.007), emotional stability (p=0.013), and intellect (p=0.004), while regarding coping strategies, the SSB group was less likely to use negative strategies: self-distraction (p=0.036), denial (p=0.006), venting (p=0.03), behavioral disengagement (p=0.046), and self-blame (p=0.003), and turning to religion (p=0.041). The intensity of oral parafunctional behaviors was comparable in both groups (p=0.054). Emotional stability was a moderate protective factor (p=0.004), and the self-blame strategy was a strong risk factor (p<0.001) for increased oral parafunctional behavior intensity. Phasic activity negatively correlated with anxiety symptom severity (p=0.005), whereas tonic (p=0.122) and mixed (p=0.053) phenotypes did not. SB intensity was a protective factor against anxiety symptoms (p=0.016). Conclusion In terms of psychopathology, severe sleep bruxers tend to present less severe anxiety and depressive symptoms, while some of their personality traits (extraversion, emotional stability, and intellect) were more strongly pronounced. SSB is possibly related to the lesser use of the "maladaptive" coping strategies and there were no specific coping strategies preferred by SSB participants, compared to the other group. These observations require further studies, as it should be determined whether SB (especially phasic activity) might be a form of a somatization/functional disorder. Further research should focus on the psychogenic background of oral parafunctional behaviors, which occur more often in less emotionally stable personalities and in people using self-blame coping strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated oral behaviors in various temporomandibular disorder (TMD) subtypes, assessing their frequency, extent, and associations with both jaw functional status and psychological distress. MATERIALS AND METHODS Anonymized data from consecutive "initial-visit" TMD patients at a university-affiliated oral medicine clinic were obtained. Alongside demographic information, patients completed various questionnaires including the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD) Symptom Questionnaire, Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC), Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-20 (JFLS-20), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and General Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7). Patients underwent a protocolized clinical examination and received diagnoses of pain-related (PT), intra-articular (IT), or combined (CT) TMD using the DC/TMD diagnostic algorithms. Data were evaluated with Chi-square/non-parametric tests and logistic regression analyses (α = 0.05). RESULTS The study comprised 700 patients (mean age 37.4 ± 15.7 years), with 12.6%, 15.1%, and 72.3% diagnosed with PT, IT, and CT, respectively. For all TMD subtypes, oral activities during sleep were more prevalent than those during wakefulness. While variations in total/subscale OBC scores were insignificant, substantial differences were observed in global/subscale JFLS (PT, CT > IT), depression (PT, CT > IT), and anxiety (CT > IT) scores. Near-moderate correlations (rs = 0,36-0.39) were discerned between overall/waking-state non-functional oral behaviors and depression/anxiety. Multivariate analysis indicated that the odds of different TMD subtypes were influenced by sex, age, and jaw functional status. CONCLUSIONS For all TMD patients, sleep-related oral activities were more commonly reported than waking-state activities. Factors such as sex, age, and jaw functional limitation are associated with the likelihood of different TMD subtypes. STATEMENT OF CLINICAL RELEVANCE Oral behaviors, in themselves, do not predict distinct TMD subtypes, in contrast to factors such as sex, age, and jaw functional status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep hygiene measures and meditation may reduce stress and improve sleep quality, but their effect on the occurrence of sleep bruxism in children has not yet been investigated. AIM To explore the effects of sleep hygiene measures combined with mindfulness meditation (relaxation audio) in the management of probable sleep bruxism (SB) in children. DESIGN This clinical trial (no. NCT04501237) randomized 36 children with 3-8 years of age. Probable SB detection was performed according to the criteria established by the International Consensus on The Assessment of Bruxism-2018. Intervention group was instructed to practice sleep hygiene measures and mindfulness meditation (i.e., the use of a digital app to broadcast audio relaxation) each night before bedtime for 5 weeks; control group did not receive guidance for therapies. Parents completed a bruxism diary for 5 weeks, and the outcome was the number of SB episodes-day reported in the week (ranging from 0 to 7) in each period. A multilevel mixed-effects Poisson regression model was performed. RESULTS A total of 32 children (mean age: 6.1 years) completed the study. The children who received the therapies related to sleep hygiene measures and mindfulness meditation had a reduction in the SB incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 46% (IRR = 0.54 [Confidence Interval 95%, 0.45-0.65]) during a 5-week observation period. The sensitivity analyses did not show relevant changes in the measure of the effect. CONCLUSION Sleep hygiene measures combined with mindfulness meditation reduced the SB in children.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to verify the association between dental pain and severity of dental caries (caries morbidity stages) and the impact on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in preschool children. METHODS A cross-sectional study with 199 children (2-5 years old) enrolled at preschools in Capão do Leão-RS, Brazil. The self-report of mothers of children with a history of dental pain in the last 6 months and perception of their child's OHRQoL (ECOHIS) were obtained through a structured questionnaire. This questionnaire also collected independent variables. Children's oral examination was performed using the CAST instrument to determine caries morbidity stage. Crude and adjusted Poisson regression analysis was performed. RESULTS The prevalence of dental pain was 14.57%. The chance of the occurrence of dental pain was higher among children diagnosed in morbidity [Prevalence ratio-PR: 5.29 (95% confidence interval-95% CI 1.91-14.61); p = 0.001] and severe morbidity [RP = 6.12 (95 CI% 2.25-16.64); p < 0.001] stages. Children with dental pain presented higher scores in the total ECOHIS [rate ratio = 7.11 (95% CI 4.55-11.09); p < 0.001] and in all of the domains of this instrument. Furthermore, children with a history of dental trauma [PR = 2.41 (95% CI 1.15-5.04); p < 0.001] and those whose reason for last visit to the dental office was for restorative/endodontic/extraction treatment [PR = 1.29 (95% CI 1.01-6.19); p = 0.049] had a higher prevalence of dental pain. CONCLUSION A substantial prevalence of dental pain in the last 6 months and negative impact on children's OHRQoL was identified in this sample. Children diagnosed with carious dentin lesions and abscess and fistula were more likely to have dental pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The etiology of sleep bruxism in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients is not yet fully clarified. This prospective clinical study aimed to investigate the connection between probable sleep bruxism, electromyographic muscle tone, and respiratory sleep patterns recorded during polysomnography. METHODS 106 patients with OSA (74 males, 31 females, mean age: 56.1 ± 11.4 years) were divided into two groups (sleep bruxism: SB; no sleep bruxism: NSB). Probable SB were based on the AASM criteria: self-report of clenching/grinding, orofacial symptoms upon awakening, abnormal tooth wear and hypertrophy of the masseter muscle. Both groups underwent clinical examination for painful muscle symptoms aligned with Temporomandibular Disorders Diagnostic Criteria (DC/TMD), such as myalgia, myofascial pain, and headache attributed to temporomandibular disorder. Additionally, non-complaint positive muscle palpation and orofacial-related limitations (Jaw Functional Limited Scale-20: JFLS-20) were assessed. A one-night polysomnography with electromyographic masseter muscle tone (EMG) measurement was performed. Descriptive data, inter-group comparisons and multivariate logistic regression were calculated. RESULTS OSA patients had a 37.1% prevalence of SB. EMG muscle tone (N1-N3, REM; P = 0.001) and the number of hypopneas (P = 0.042) were significantly higher in the sleep bruxism group. While measures like apnea-hypopnea-index (AHI), respiratory-disturbance-index (RDI), apnea index (AI), hypopnea-index (HI), number of arousals, and heart rate (1/min) were elevated in sleep bruxers, the differences were not statistically significant. There was no difference in sleep efficiency (SE; P = 0.403). Non-complaint masseter muscle palpation (61.5%; P = 0.015) and myalgia (41%; P = 0.010) were significant higher in SB patients. Multivariate logistic regression showed a significant contribution of EMG muscle tone and JFLS-20 to bruxism risk. CONCLUSION Increased EMG muscle tone and orofacial limitations can predict sleep bruxism in OSA patients. Besides, SB patients suffer more from sleep disorder breathing. Thus, sleep bruxism seems to be not only an oral health related problem in obstructive apnea. Consequently, interdisciplinary interventions are crucial for effectively treating these patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Philipps-University Marburg (reg. no. 13/22-2022) and registered at the "German Clinical Trial Register, DRKS" (DRKS0002959).

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and headache disorders are highly prevalent in the population. TMDs can present headache symptoms as a secondary headache and, in addition, be comorbid with primary headache disorders. This overlap has significant clinical implications for which it is essential for the physician to be aware, and they should screen for the potential presence of TMDs in a headache patient. Bruxism is a parafunctional behavior also prevalent in the population which has a role in TMDs and may influence headache symptomatology, but it is still necessary to clarify this relationship.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In dentistry, association between bruxism and individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and Down Syndrome (DS) is high. Bruxism is one of the most common oral and psychophysiological disorders, that is still an unsolved issue with limited data. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this systematic review (SR) was to evaluate evidence about bruxism and its management in individuals with ASD and DS. MATERIALS AND METHODS The researchers performed an electronic search using keywords on three databases, reference lists and complemented by manual searching from January 2000 to February 2023 to find out the relevant documents. An extensive literature review using the "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta Analysis" method was carried out. PICO parameters were formulated, and studies risk of bias was evaluated using the JBI critical appraisal checklist tool for case reports. RESULTS Out of 527 documents, 8 case studies and one review paper were identified as final articles for data synthesis. The findings showed, bruxism was reduced for all the participants with ASD and DS after implementation of functional analysis or dental treatment. CONCLUSION The current SR found that despite the positive results of all the studies, there was a lack of evidence due to a limited number of studies and only case studies were conducted through functional analysis and dental treatment. NOVELTY This SR is the first study on bruxism treatments in individuals with ASD and DS that included all the available studies (n = 9) since last 23 years and the first study that specifically addresses the incorporation of case reports in a systemic review.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the immediate and late impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the occurrence of possible sleep bruxism (SB) among adolescents in Brazil. DESIGN This is a longitudinal study performed with adolescents (11-15 years old) from Southern Brazil. Baseline data were collected before the Brazilian COVID-19 outbreak (T1). Posteriorly, data were collected after 3 (T2) and 15 months under the Brazilian COVID-19 outbreak. The possible SB was evaluated by the question: 'Do you grind your teeth during your sleep?'. Sociodemographic, psychosocial and clinical variables were also collected. Changes in SB were evaluated by multilevel logistic regression models for repeated measures. RESULTS Of the 290 adolescents assessed at T1, 182 were reassessed at both follow-ups. The prevalence of possible SB was 13% at T1, 11% at T2 and 22% at T3. There were no immediate effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the occurrence of possible SB (T2). Adolescents had odds 2.77 times greater of presented possible SB after 15 months (T3) of COVID-19 pandemic scenarios when compared to T1. CONCLUSION There was a considerable and late increase in the possible SB in adolescents in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This 24-month, double-blind, split-mouth randomized clinical trial aimed to compare the retention rates of a preheated thermoviscous composite resin (PHT) compared to a non-heated composite resin (NHT) in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). METHODS A total of 120 restorations were restored on NCCLs using a preheated (VisCalor bulk, Voco GmbH) and a non-heated (Admira Fusion, Voco GmbH) composite resins with 60 restorations per group. A universal adhesive in the selective enamel conditioning was applied. In the PHT group, composite was heated at 68 °C for using a bench heater. In the NHT group, no heating was employed. Both restorative materials were dispensed into caps and inserted into the NCCLs. The restorations were evaluated at baseline, 6, 12, 18, and after 24 months of clinical service using the FDI criteria. Statistical analysis was performed with Kaplan-Meier estimation analysis for retention/fracture rate and Chi-square test for the other FDI parameters (α=0.05). RESULTS After 24 months 108 restorations were assessed. Seven restorations were lost (two for PHT group and five for NHT group), and the retention rates (95 % confidence interval [CI]) were 96.7 % (81.5-99.9) for PHT group and 90.8 % (81.1-96.0) for NHT group, with no statistical differences between them (p > 0.05). The hazard ratio (95 % CI) was 0.52 (0.27 to 1.01), with no significant difference within groups. In terms of all other FDI parameters that were assessed, all restorations were deemed clinically acceptable. CONCLUSIONS Both composites showed high rates of retention rates after 24 months. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The clinical performance of the new preheated thermoviscous was found to be as good as the non-heated composite after 24-month of clinical evaluation in non-carious cervical lesions. Abstract
Sleep bruxism (SB) can be determined with different diagnostic procedures. The relationship between psychometric variables and SB varies depending on the diagnostic method. The aim of the study was to compare the association between SB and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL; measured by the Oral Health Impact Profile, OHIP), anxiety (measured by the State-Trait anxiety inventory, STAI), and stress (single scale variable) depending on the diagnostic method in the same sample. N = 45 participants were examined by non-instrumental (possible/probable SB) and instrumental methods (definite SB). The OHIP differed significantly between possible SB (median = 4) and non-SB (median = 0) with W = 115, p = 0.01, and probable SB (median = 6) and non-SB (median = 0) with W = 101, p = 0.01). There was no significant difference in the OHIP score between definite SB and non-SB. For the other psychometric variables, the analyses revealed no significant differences between SB and non-SB in all diagnostic procedures. The results suggest that there is a difference between possible/probable and definite SB with respect to the association with OHRQoL. Certain aspects of possible/probable SB might be responsible for the poor OHRQoL, which are not measured in definite SB.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Stress is characterized as a challenging occurrence that triggers a physiological and/or behavioral allostatic response, alongside the demands typically encountered throughout the natural course of life. A sustained state of stress gives rise to secondary effects, including insomnia and neck pain. Also, the risk of musculoskeletal problems in the cervical and lumbar spine can be increased due to a sustained state of stress. The present study main objective is to study the association between orofacial and pelvic floor muscles in women in Spain. METHODOLOGY An observational, cross-sectional, retrospective analytical study was designed and carried out in the laboratories of the European University of Madrid. Sixty-five participants were recruited with a mean age of 29.9 ± 7.69. Measurements were taken by myotonometry on natural oscillation frequency (Hz), dynamic stiffness (N/m), elasticity (N/m2), mechanical stress relaxation time (ms) and creep, for the following muscles: right and left masseter, right and left temporalis and central fibrous nucleus of the perineum (CFPF). On the other hand, the subjects completed the following questionnaires: perceived stress scale (PSS-14), anxiety scale (STAI), self-reported bruxism questionnaire (CBA), Fonseca Anamnestic Index and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale (PSQI). RESULTS Significant correlations were found in several parameters between the right temporalis and CFPF (p<0.05). Highlighting the correlation between TMDs and lubrication r = -0.254 (p = 0.041) and bruxism with pain in sexual intercourse r = 0.261 (p = 0.036). CONCLUSION The results support the proposed hypothesis. To the author's knowledge, this is the first study which relates both locations, and it is suggested to continue with the research and expand the knowledge of it.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study is to assess the effects of respiratory exercises (inspiratory and expiratory) in individuals with sleep bruxism (SB) and associated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS This is a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial including individuals with SB and associated respiratory events in OSA. Respiratory physical therapy was performed using inspiratory (Threshold® IMT), expiratory (Threshold® PEP) muscle training, and compared with a placebo group. A total of 30 daily respiratory cycles (inspiration and expiration) were performed five times a week for 12 weeks. Individuals were reassessed at two times, at baseline (T1) and after 12 weeks of training (T2) by means of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Polysomnography. RESULTS Awakening was significantly different (p ≤ 0.05) between the inspiratory group and placebo 12 weeks after respiratory physical therapy. The number of contractions of the masseter muscle differed between the inspiratory, expiratory, and placebo groups (p ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION Respiratory physical therapy for OSA improved awaking levels in 80 and 67% of the number of masseter muscle contractions, when compared to placebo. Abstract
Bruxism is a non-functional involuntary muscle activity that affects more than one-third of the population at some point in their lives. A number of factors have been found to be related to the etiopathogenesis of bruxism; therefore, the condition is considered multifactorial. The most commonly accepted factor is stress. Stress has long been considered to increase muscle tone and to reduce the pain threshold. Current evidence indicates that exposure to chronic stress, distress and allostatic load ignite neurological degeneration and the attenuation of critical neuronal pathways that are highly implicated in the orofacial involuntary muscle activity. The present review discusses the negative effects that chronic stress exerts on certain parts of the central nervous system and the mechanisms through which these changes are involved in the etiopathogenesis of bruxism. The extent of these morphological and functional changes on nerves and neuronal tracts provides valuable insight into the obstacles that need to be overcome in order to achieve successful treatment. Additionally, particular emphasis is given on the effects of bruxism on the central nervous system, particularly the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, as this subsequently induces an increase in circulating corticosterone levels, also evidenced by increased levels of salivary cortisol, thereby transforming bruxism into a self-reinforcing loop.
