Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the association between salivary adipokine levels, including leptin, chemerin, resistin and interleukin-6, with body mass index (BMI), waist and wrist circumference and appetite in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 104 participants were divided into three groups: 35 diabetic patients, 35 pre-diabetic individuals and 34 healthy controls. Unstimulated saliva samples were collected using the spitting method, and salivary levels of leptin, chemerin, resistin and interleukin-6 were measured via ELISA. Appetite was assessed using a standard questionnaire, and BMI, waist and wrist circumferences were measured with a tape measure. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 26, with a significance threshold set at 0.01. RESULTS Significant differences were found in the salivary levels of leptin, chemerin, and resistin among the three groups (p < 0.01), but no significant difference was observed in the salivary levels of interleukin-6 (p > 0.01). Analysis also revealed significant differences in appetite traits among the groups, with the highest appetite trait observed in pre-diabetic subjects (p = 0.0002). The salivary level of chemerin was significantly associated with appetite traits regardless of diabetic status (p = 0.009). Appetite was also significantly related to BMI (p = 0.002) and waist circumference (p = 0.001) in all subjects. However, no significant relationship was observed between appetite and fasting plasma glucose or HbA1c levels (p > 0.01). CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that salivary levels of certain adipokines, such as leptin, chemerin and resistin, may be significantly higher in diabetic patients, although this is not true for all adipokines. While pre-diabetic patients exhibited a higher level of appetite, no positive correlation was found between salivary adipokine levels (except chemerin) and appetite or anthropometric characteristics, irrespective of diabetic status.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has a pathophysiological component that includes inflammation. Inflammation-sensitive marker measurement may be helpful in determining the risk of complications for both older T2D patients and the public. This study aimed to investigate the association between blood pro-inflammatory mediators and the characteristics of elderly patients with T2D using meta and network analyses. The Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were selected as study methodology. The Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool in the meta-analysis assessed the studies' methodological quality. The selected studies were statistically analyzed using the META-MAR tool based on the standardized mean difference (SMD). The selected studies included nine examinations involving 6399 old people [+>+55 years old, 65.9+±+4.09 (mean+±+SD)]. The meta-analysis showed that pro-inflammatory mediators (SMD 0.82) and patient-related variables [risk factors (SMD 0.71)] were significantly associated with T2D (p+<+0.05). Subgroup analysis revealed that tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α; SMD 1.08), body mass index (SMD 0.64), high-density lipoprotein (HDL; SMD -0.61), body weight (SMD 0.50), and blood pressure (SMD 1.11) were factors significantly associated with T2D (p+<+0.05). Network analysis revealed that among patient characteristics, diastolic blood pressure and, among inflammatory mediators, leptin were the most closely associated factors with T2D in older adults. Moreover, network analysis showed that TNF-α and systolic blood pressure were most closely associated with leptin. Overall, alternate techniques, such as meta-analysis and network analysis, might identify different markers for T2D in older people. A therapeutic decision-making process needs to consider these differences in advance.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the serum and salivary inflammatory markers induced by Diabetes mellitus (DM) in dogs and to assess the possible confounding effect of gingivitis. A panel of 13 cytokines was measured in the serum and saliva of dogs diagnosed with DM and compared with healthy dogs without gingivitis (control group 1; CG1) and dogs with gingivitis but otherwise healthy (control group 2; CG2). The results of the present study showed statistically significantly higher levels of IL-8, KC-like and MCP1 in the serum of dogs with DM compared to CG1 dogs. In the case of saliva, the DM group presented statistically higher GM-CSF, IL6, IL15, and MCP1 levels compared to CG1, and lower KC-like chemokine compared to CG2. Finally, gingivitis produced changes in saliva, with salivary levels of GM-CSF, IL-6, IL-7, IL-15, IP-10, KC-like, IL-10, IL-18, MCP1, TNFα being statistically significantly higher in the saliva of CG2 dogs compared to CG1. The results of the present study indicate that dogs with DM have altered cytokine levels in serum and saliva compared to healthy dogs. In addition, this study highlights the importance of taking oral health into account when determining cytokines in dogs, as gingivitis can significantly alter their concentrations. .

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common diseases worldwide. DM may disrupt hormone regulation. Metabolic hormones, leptin, ghrelin, glucagon, and glucagon-like peptide 1, are produced by the salivary glands and taste cells. These salivary hormones are expressed at different levels in diabetic patients compared to control group and may cause differences in the perception of sweetness. This study is aimed at assessing the concentrations of salivary hormones leptin, ghrelin, glucagon, and GLP-1 and their correlations with sweet taste perception (including thresholds and preferences) in patients with DM. A total of 155 participants were divided into three groups: controlled DM, uncontrolled DM, and control groups. Saliva samples were collected to determine salivary hormone concentrations by ELISA kits. Varying sucrose concentrations (0.015, 0.03, 0.06, 0.12, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mol/l) were used to assess sweetness thresholds and preferences. Results showed a significant increase in salivary leptin concentrations in the controlled DM and uncontrolled DM compared to the control group. In contrast, salivary ghrelin and GLP-1 concentrations were significantly lower in the uncontrolled DM group than in the control group. In general, HbA1c was positively correlated with salivary leptin concentrations and negatively correlated with salivary ghrelin concentrations. Additionally, in both the controlled and uncontrolled DM groups, salivary leptin was negatively correlated with the perception of sweetness. Salivary glucagon concentrations were negatively correlated with sweet taste preferences in both controlled and uncontrolled DM. In conclusion, the salivary hormones leptin, ghrelin, and GLP-1 are produced either higher or lower in patients with diabetes compared to the control group. In addition, salivary leptin and glucagon are inversely associated with sweet taste preference in diabetic patients.

Abstract
Objective To assess the effect of gender factors on serum leptin levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods To remove any studies that indicated a relationship between leptin-based inflammatory variables and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in particular patient categories, a comprehensive search of all articles published between July 2019 and June 2021 was performed on PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and EBSCO Host, including Academic Search Premier, Africa-Wide Information, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. A summary description of the combined analysis across multiple centers, regions, and continents will help us better understand the effect of gender on serum leptin levels in patients with diabetes. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.2 software on the literature that satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results Plasma CRP levels in women with type 2 diabetes were found to be no different from those in males with type 2 diabetes, with an OR of 0.12, 95 percent confidence interval (CI) of 0.12 to 0.12, P = 0.01. There was no statistically significant difference in the plasma level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) between women with type 2 diabetes and males with type 2 diabetes However, the “inverted funnel” diagram is asymmetrical, indicating a publication bias in the included studies, despite the fact that there was no statistically significant difference in abnormal leptin levels between men with type 2 diabetes and women patients (OR = −0.69, 95 percent CI (0.88, 1.00), P < 0.05). Conclusion Gender factors did not affect the level of inflammatory factors and leptin level in type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
The objective of this pilot clinical study was to identify salivary biomarkers that are associated with periodontal disease and measures of diabetic autonomic dysfunction. Saliva samples from 32 participants were obtained from 3 groups: healthy (H), type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM), and type 1 diabetes mellitus with neuropathy (DMN). Based on the periodontal examination, individuals’ mean Periodontal Screening and Recording scores were categorized into two groups (periodontally healthy and gingivitis), and correlated to specific salivary inflammatory biomarkers assessed by a customized protein array and enzyme assay. The mean salivary IgA level in DM was 9211.5 ± 4776.4 pg/ml, which was significantly lower than H (17,182.2 ± 8899.3 pg/ml). IgA in DMN with healthy periodontium was significantly lower (5905.5 ± 3124.8 pg/ml) compared to H, although IgA levels in DMN patients with gingivitis (16,894. 6 ± 7084.3) were not. According to the result of a logistic regression model, IgA and periodontal condition were the indicators of the binary response given by H versus DM, and H versus DMN, respectively. These data suggest that selected salivary biomarkers, such as IgA, combined with a periodontal examination prior to obtaining salivary samples can offer a non-invasive method to assess risk for developing diabetic neuropathy.

Abstract
Background A growing number of studies found inconsistent results on the role of chemokines in the progression of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and prediabetes (PDM). The purpose of this meta-analysis was to summarize the results of previous studies on the association between the chemokines system and T2DM/PDM. Methods We searched in the databases, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library, for eligible studies published not later than March 1, 2020. Data extraction was performed independently by 2 reviewers, on a standardized, prepiloted form. Group differences in chemokines concentrations were summarized using the standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI), calculated by performing a meta-analysis using the random-effects model. Results We identified 98 relevant studies that investigated the association between 32 different chemokines and T2DM/PDM. Altogether, these studies involved 14,708 patients and 14,574 controls. Results showed that the concentrations of CCL1, CCL2, CCL4, CCL5, CCL11, CXCL8, CXCL10 and CX3CL1 in the T2DM patients were significantly higher than that in the controls, while no difference in these concentrations was found between the PDM patients and controls. Conclusion Progression of T2DM may be associated with elevated concentrations of chemokines. Meta-Analysis Registration PROSPERO, identifier CRD42019148305.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Blood has been the usual biological fluid for measuring analytes, but there is mounting evidence that saliva may be also useful for detecting cytokines in a noninvasive way. Thus, in this study we aimed to determine concentration of cytokines and other analytes in saliva from a population of healthy children. METHODS We collected un-stimulated whole saliva samples from clinically healthy children, and concentration of 17 cytokines and 12 other analytes were measured in supernatants. All values were adjusted by albumin content and were log-transformed before multivariate statistical analysis. RESULTS We included 114 children (53.5% females) between 6.0 and 11.9 years old. The highest concentrations (medians, pg/µg albumin) were seen for visfatin (183.70) and adiponectin (162.26) and the lowest for IL-13 and IL-2 (~0.003). Albumin concentration was associated with age (rS = 0.39, p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, five analytes (C peptide, ghrelin, GLP-1, glucagon, leptin) inversely correlated with age and positively with height-for-age. Age was also positively associated with PAI-1, while height-for-age was also positively associated with insulin and visfatin. Finally, BMI-for-age had a positive correlation with GM-CSF and insulin. CONCLUSIONS Herein, we provided concentration values for 29 analytes in saliva from healthy children that may be useful as preliminary reference framework in the clinical research setting.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) is the recommended approach for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Leptin and chemerin are two examples of hormones from adipokine family, which mostly takes part in glucose metabolism and inflammatory processes. We aim to find a possible new and tolerable screening technique for GDM using salivary levels of leptin and chemerin. MATERIAL AND METHOD Saliva samples of pregnant patients, on their 24-28th weeks of gestation, are collected via saliva collection kit. Leptin and chemerin ELISA tests were run from serum samples being hold at -80 °C following their thawing session. Patients are divided into two groups depending on their GDM status. OGTT results of patients are compared with their ELISA results. RESULTS ELISA study for leptin showed an insignificant difference between patients with GDM and patients without where the values were 0.44 ± 0.33 and 0.34 ± 0.24 respectively (p: 0.155). Chemerin study revealed a significant difference between patients with GDM and without 631.06 ± 344.42, 334.81 ± 244.91 respectively (p < .001). CONCLUSION Leptin and chemerin can be detected in saliva. Chemerin levels are significantly higher in patients with GDM, thus this knowledge can be used to develop a new screening method for OGTT.

Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is associated with an increased morbidity and mortality, resulting in elevated cost for public health systems. DN is the main cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its incidence increases the number of patients that develop the end-stage renal disease (ESRD). There are growing epidemiological and preclinical evidence about the close relationship between inflammatory response and the occurrence and progression of DN. Several anti-inflammatory strategies targeting specific inflammatory mediators (cell adhesion molecules, chemokines and cytokines) and intracellular signaling pathways have shown beneficial effects in experimental models of DN, decreasing proteinuria and renal lesions. A number of inflammatory molecules have been shown useful to identify diabetic patients at high risk of developing renal complications. In this review, we focus on the key role of inflammation in the genesis and progression of DN, with a special interest in effector molecules and activated intracellular pathways leading to renal damage, as well as a comprehensive update of new therapeutic strategies targeting inflammation to prevent and/or retard renal injury.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes that can occur in saliva components in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) of different severity and determine if any of these components could be a biomarker of this disease. Therefore, a panel of selected analytes related to the amyloid cascade, the immune and adrenergic systems, among others, were analyzed in the saliva of patients with Alzheimer's disease. METHODS A total of 152 patients with AD and controls were included. The severity of the disease was established according to the Global Deterioration Scale. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected. RESULTS Salivary amyloid-β42 was significantly lower, and complement C4 was significantly higher in the patients with AD than in the controls (p < 0.05 in both cases). Only complement C4 maintained its significant effect in the multivariate regression analysis. However, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of C4 was 0.613. No changes were found in any analyte regarding the severity of the disease. CONCLUSIONS A decrease in amyloid-β42 and an increase in complement C4 were detected in the saliva of patients with AD, but the changes did not show a high diagnostic performance for the detection of AD and were not associated with its severity. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Although some analytes showed significant differences in saliva in patients with AD, in our study conditions the salivary biomarkers analyzed were not of enough diagnostic utility for being used in routine.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes is traditionally diagnosed by the use of an oral glucose tolerance test and/or HbA1c, both of which require serum collection. Various biomarkers, which are measurable biological substances that provide clinical insight on disease state, have also been effective in the early identification and risk prediction of inflammatory diseases. Measuring biomarker concentrations has traditionally been obtained through serum collection as well. However, numerous biomarkers are detectable in saliva. Salivary analysis has more recently been introduced into research as a potential non-invasive, cost-effective diagnostic for the early identification of type 2 diabetes risk in adults and youth. Therefore, the purpose of this review was to compare 6 established inflammatory biomarkers of type 2 diabetes, in serum and saliva, and determine if similar diagnostic effectiveness is seen in saliva. A lack of standardized salivary analysis, processing, and collection accounts for errors and inconsistencies in conclusive data amongst studies. Proposing a national standardization in salivary analysis, coupled with increased data and research on the utility of saliva as a diagnostic, poses the potential for salivary analysis to be used in diagnostic settings.

Abstract
Saliva contains a variety of compounds that can change in local and systemic pathologies including inflammation. Although changes in acute phase proteins and markers of oxidative stress in saliva during inflammation in humans and different animal species have been described, no data exist about possible changes during inflammation in analytes in saliva of cows. The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in selected salivary biomarkers of stress, inflammation and immune system, and oxidative stress in cows with inflammation. For this purpose, bovine mastitis was used as model. Saliva and serum from 18 clinically healthy cows and 18 cows with clinical mastitis were used in the study. A panel of analytes integrated by alpha-amylase, cortisol, haptoglobin, adenosine deaminase, cholinesterase, total antioxidant capacity, lactate, and uric acid was measured in all samples and differences between the two groups of animals were evaluated. Significant increases in cortisol, alpha-amylase, uric acid, lactate and significant decreases in cholinesterase were detected in saliva of cows with mastitis. These results indicate that that cows with mastitis show changes in salivary biomarkers that reflect presence of stress, inflammation and oxidative stress in the animals.

Abstract
Obesity is an important risk factor for postmenopausal breast cancer and also a poor prognostic factor among cancer patients. Moreover, obesity is associated with a number of health disorders such as insulin resistance/type-2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and other cardiovascular diseases. Frequently, these health disorders exhibit as components/complications of the metabolic syndrome. Nevertheless, obesity-related diseases may coexist with postmenopausal breast cancer; and these comorbid conditions could be substantial. Therefore, it may be assumed that different diseases including breast cancer could originate from a common pathological background in excessive adipose tissue. Adipocyte-released hormone-like cytokine (or adipokine) leptin behaves differently in a normal healthy state and obesity. A growing body of evidence suggests an important role of leptin in our major obesity-related health issues such as insulin resistance, hypertension, and neoplasia. In this context, this review describes the relationships of the abovementioned pathologies with leptin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate salivary adiponectin and adenosine deaminase (ADA) in women suffering from Sjögren's syndrome (SS). METHODS Salivary adiponectin and ADA were measured in patients with SS (n = 17) and compared to their values in healthy controls (n = 13) and patients suffering from drug-induced xerostomia (non-SS sicca group; n = 19). A clinical history was made for each patient, patients were examined clinically, and xerostomia inventory (XI) was performed. RESULTS Salivary adiponectin corrected by total protein was higher in patients with SS than in healthy individuals (P < 0.05) or patients with non-SS sicca (P < 0.01) and correlated with XI (r = 0.555; P < 0.05). Salivary ADA was higher in patients with SS and non-SS sicca compared to controls (P < 0.05 in both cases). CONCLUSION The results of the present study indicate that adiponectin and ADA are increased in the saliva of patients with SS. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Salivary adiponectin corrected by total protein can be a potential biomarker of SS. TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT03156569.

Abstract
Aims and Objectives The aim of the study was to estimate and compare aspartate aminotransferases (AST) and alanine aminotransferases (ALT) levels in saliva and serum of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and normal children, and the objective was to evaluate the significance of these enzymes in assessing the salivary gland injury in IDDM children. Materials and Methods The study group comprised of thirty children clinically and biochemically diagnosed for IDDM and thirty healthy children of similar age in the control group. Saliva and serum samples were collected and enzyme assay was performed by optimized ultraviolet test method (according to International Federation of Clinical Chemistry). The values obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using Mann-Whitney U-test for comparison of the variables and Karl-Pearson's coefficient test for correlation. The SPSS 16.0, (SPSS Inc., Chicago, USA) was used for statistical analysis. Results Higher values of AST (mean = saliva 91.60 IU/L) and ALT (mean = saliva 94.93 IU/L) were found in the saliva than in serum (AST serum = 15.83 IU/L) (ALT serum = 20.80 IU/L) among the patients and the differences were statistically highly significant (P = 0.001). A similar comparison in the control group did not show statistical significant difference (saliva - AST mean = 23.50 IU/L, ALT mean = 21.95 IU/L and serum - AST mean = 12.60 IU/L, ALT mean = 13.25 IU/L). On correlation between patient and normal group, greater values of AST and ALT were observed in saliva of patients and the difference was statistically highly significant ([AST-mean = patients 91.166 IU/L and controls = 23.500 IU/L] [ALT-mean = patients 94.933 IU/L and controls 21.950 IU/L]). The serum values of patients and controls did not show statistical difference. Although higher values of salivary ALT and AST were observed in patients with the disease for 0-5-year clinical duration (ALT mean = 100.21 IU/L and AST mean = 95.39 IU/L) than those with the disease for 6-10-year duration (ALT mean = 77.57 IU/L and AST mean = 77.28 IU/L), values were statistically nonsignificant. Conclusion Elevated salivary AST and ALT levels in IDDM patients suggest the injury to salivary glands and could aid as a salivary marker for the involvement of salivary glands in IDDM.
