Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to determine the burden of suspected nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in a predominantly Hispanic patient population and explore the utility of the American Gastroenterological Association's NAFLD Clinical Care Pathway (CCP). METHODOLOGY Electronic medical records (n = 223) were used to divide patients into risk groups based on the amount of metabolic risk factors they presented, diabetic status, or if they presented other liver diseases. Fribosis-4 (FIB-4) scores were used to determine the risk for advanced fibrosis. RESULTS Most patients (83.8%) were considered at risk for NAFLD based on CCP criteria, and about a third of patients (33.2%) were found to be at indeterminate (n = 60; 26.9%) or high risk (n = 14; 6.3%) for advanced fibrosis. Most indeterminate-risk patients (78.3%) were not referred for liver imaging. DISCUSSION This study demonstrates the potential of the CCP as a corrective tool that could help to better identify and screen patients at risk for NAFLD.

Abstract
Metabolic dysfunction-associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) is a chronic liver disease characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver and hepatic steatosis, which can progress to critical conditions, including Metabolic dysfunction-associated Steatohepatitis (MASH), liver fibrosis, hepatic cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Galectin-3, a member of the galectin family of proteins, has been involved in cascades that are responsible for the pathogenesis and progression of liver fibrosis in MAFLD. This review summarizes the present understanding of the role of galectin-3 in the severity of MAFLD and its associated liver fibrosis. The article assesses the underlying role of galectin-3-mediated fibrogenesis, including the triggering of hepatic stellate cells, the regulation of extracellular degradation, and the modulation of immune reactions and responses. It also highlights the assessments of the potential diagnostic and therapeutic implications of galectin-3 in liver fibrosis during MAFLD. Overall, this review provides insights into the multifaceted interaction between galectin-3 and liver fibrosis in MAFLD, which could lead to the development of novel strategies for diagnosis and treatment of this prevalent liver disease.

Abstract
Metabolic dysfunction associated with fatty liver disease (MAFLD), always accompanied by disturbance of glucose and lipid metabolism, is becoming the most difficult obstacle in the next decades. In the current research, we uncover that the potent non-coding RNA Tug1, which is related to metabolic enzymes, regulates hepatocytes steatosis induced by sodium palmitate via miR-1934-3p absorbing. The knockdown of lncRNA-Tug1 distinctly rescues the increased expression level of glycolytic enzymes and fatty acid synthetase via releasing more mature miR-1934-3p in hepatocytes. Moreover, miR-1934-3p suppresses Selenoprotein F (SelenoF) through binding with the SelenoF 3'UTR effectors; importantly, we demonstrated that the deletion of SelenoF consistent with the lncRNA-Tug1's effecting on metabolism enzymes. In the current paper, the interaction of Tug1/miR-1934-3p/SelenoF was verified by the dual-luciferase reporter system, and IRS1/AKT pathway possesses the essential role in glucolipid metabolism when SelenoF is deleted. We concluded that lncRNA Tug1 functioned as ceRNA to alleviate steatosis and glycolysis in hepatocytes of C57BL/6 through adsorbing miR-1934-3p to release SelenoF and triggering IRS/AKT pathway. The Tug1/miR-1934-3p/SelenoF constructed the ceRNA interact network Selenoprotein F accelerates glucolipid metabolism via IRS1/AKT pathway SelenoF-/- alleviates steatosis in mice liver.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knowledge is essential for patients' disease management strategies and a critical component of healthcare. The importance of increasing patients level of knowledge has become more widely acknowledge in liver disease management in recent years, but further studies are needed to address patients experiences of unmet knowledge needs to develop appropriate patient education strategies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore knowledge needs in patients' with liver disease of different etiology and severity. METHODS A qualitative study was designed and an inductive method was chosen. Thirty-three patients with liver disease of different etiology and severity were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. Content analysis was used as an inspiration to describe and compare patients' needs for knowledge across disease etiology and severity. The reporting followed consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research. RESULTS The analysis generated three categories and nine subcategories. In general, the patients described lack of knowledge related to their liver disease, which made it difficult for them to manage their disease. Patients wished to be more involved in care and treatment of the liver disease. However, patients' had difficulties to assess and understand the importance of the information they received from healthcare professionals. Due to lack of knowledge, patients' had a misconception of the liver disease. Patients' had variation in knowledge needs depending on liver disease etiology and severity. CONCLUSION Within liver disease management, knowledge of patients' experiences is vital to meet patients' knowledge needs and to develop appropriate patient education strategies. Therefore, it is important to ascertain a patient-centered approach to accommodate patients' individual knowledge needs, involve patients in care and treatment, and insure understanding to strengthen their self-management and give the patients the necessary skills to manage their disease and everyday life. Abstract
To assess the relationship between clinical biochemical characteristics and steatosis or fibrosis by Fibroscan in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients in order to seek the simple effective screening method closed to the results of the fibroScan measurement. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 188 patients with NAFLD who underwent FibroScan examinations. Demographic data and clinical biochemical characteristics were collected and analyzed. The result showed elevated serum uric acid (SUA) (P = .023, odds ratio [OR = 1.005, 95% CI (1.001-1.009) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) (P = .000, OR = 4.549, 95%CI (1.974-10.484) were associated with severe steatosis (controlled attenuation parameter, CAP ≥ 300 dB/m). The magnitude of liver stiffness measured using FibroScan was positively correlated with aspartate transaminase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio (R = 0.419, P = .000), AST to platelet ratio index (APRI) score (R = 0.309, P = .000), and Fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4) (R = 0.507, P = .000). The areas under the receiver operating curve (ROC) of AST/ALT, APRI, and FIB-4 for mild or severe fibrosis were 0.563, 0.696, and 0.728, respectively, and those for advanced fibrosis were 0.648, 0.750, and 0.821, respectively. The FIB-4 index cutoff value was 1.65 with a sensitivity of 68.3% and specificity of 89.8% during the diagnosis of advanced fibrosis. MetS and elevated SUA are associated with severe steatosis according to the CAP value screen, whereas FIB-4, as the fibrosis score method, is closer to the liver stiffness measurement results from FibroScan, which may facilitate early warning of NAFLD in the community or in remote areas.

Abstract
An international panel recently proposed an update to the terminology and diagnostic criteria for fatty liver disease. The experts proposed a change in the nomenclature from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). This single-letter change, we believe, heralds the dawn of a new era in clinical practice and in clinical and basic research as well. The new nomenclature with the easily applicable approach has stimulated the enthusiasm of the researchers worldwide, resulting in a large number of publications over the past two years. Several recent studies have provided tremendous evidence of the superiority of the MAFLD criteria over the NAFLD criteria. Many studies in different geographic areas of the world including the United States, Europe, and Asia on a large number of patients proved that the utility of MAFLD criteria was higher than that of the NAFLD criteria in different aspects of fatty liver diseases. Consequently, many societies, physician and nurse groups, health stakeholders, representatives of regulatory sciences, and others endorsed the new nomenclature. Here we highlight the endorsement of the new name by different societies and groups and the outcome of different studies on the new nomenclature in addition to a short discussion of the debate by some experts.

Abstract
"Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD)" is the term suggested in 2020 to refer to fatty liver disease related to systemic metabolic dysregulation. The name change from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to MAFLD comes with a simple set of criteria to enable easy diagnosis at the bedside for the general medical community, including primary care physicians. Since the introduction of the term, there have been key areas in which the superiority of MAFLD over the traditional NAFLD terminology has been demonstrated, including for the risk of liver and extrahepatic mortality, disease associations, and for identifying high-risk individuals. Additionally, MAFLD has been adopted by a number of leading pan-national and national societies due to its concise diagnostic criterion, removal of the requirement to exclude concomitant liver diseases, and reduction in the stigma associated with this condition. The current article explores the differences between MAFLD and NAFLD diagnosis, areas of benefit, some potential limitations, and how the MAFLD terminology has opened up new fields of research.

Abstract
The most common liver disease in the world is fatty liver disease related to metabolic dysfunction, yet neither patients nor medical professionals are fully aware of this. The disease, formerly known for decades as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has been renamed metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), with many international consensus groups making recommendations on how the condition should be diagnosed and treated. This point of view explores the nomenclature change from the standpoint of Arab medical professionals and patients. The call for a name change brought up serious issues with the current nomenclature, which refers to the condition as NAFLD, and its diagnostic criteria, including the necessity for excluding alcohol consumption. The Arab world has its unique situation as regards both old and new nomenclatures. This is because of the low alcohol consumption rates in most Arab Muslim countries besides the reported high prevalence rates of obesity and its related comorbidities in the region. In our opinion, such unclarities acted as a significant roadblock to several crucial aspects of disease management in the Arab countries, including patient-doctor communication, patient awareness, partnership working, patient motivation to make lifestyle changes, and promotion of multiple health behavior changes. Many Arab world hepatologists thus wholeheartedly endorse this call to redefine the disease as they believe it will eventually positively impact the understanding and awareness of fatty liver disease, enhance patient treatment and quality of life, and reduce the load on the healthcare system.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a progressive form of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which slowly progresses toward cirrhosis and finally leads to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus and the metabolic syndrome are major risk factors contributing to NAFLD. Targeting these risk factors is a rational option for inhibiting NASH progression. In addition, NASH could be treated with therapies that target the metabolic abnormalities causing disease pathogenesis (such as de novo lipogenesis and insulin resistance) as well with medications targeting downstream processes such as cellular damage, apoptosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. Glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1), is an incretin hormone dysregulated in both experimental and clinical NASH, which triggers many signaling pathways including fibroblast growth factor (FGF) that augments NASH pathogenesis. Growing evidence indicates that GLP-1 in concert with FGF-21 plays crucial roles in the conservation of glucose and lipid homeostasis in metabolic disorders. In line, GLP-1 stimulation improves hepatic ballooning, steatosis, and fibrosis in NASH. A recent clinical trial on NASH patients showed that the upregulation of FGF-21 decreases liver fibrosis and hepatic steatosis, thus improving the pathogenesis of NASH. Hence, therapeutic targeting of the GLP-1/FGF axis could be therapeutically beneficial for the remission of NASH. This review outlines the significance of the GLP-1/FGF-21 axis in experimental and clinical NASH and highlights the activity of modulators targeting this axis as potential salutary agents for the treatment of NASH.

Abstract
Recently, international expert panels have proposed a new definition of fatty liver: metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). MAFLD is not just a simple renaming of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The unique feature of MAFLD is the inclusion of metabolic dysfunctions, which are high-risk factors for events. In addition, MAFLD is independent of alcohol intake and the co-existing causes of liver disease. This new concept of MAFLD may have a widespread impact on patients, medical doctors, medical staff, and various stakeholders regarding fatty liver. Thus, MAFLD may renovate clinical practice and disease awareness of fatty liver. In this review, we introduce the definition of and rationale for MAFLD. We further describe representative cases showing how the diagnostic processes differ between MAFLD and NAFLD. We also summarize recent studies comparing MAFLD with NAFLD and discuss the impact of MAFLD on clinical trials, Japanese populations, and disease awareness.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW In 2020, a novel comprehensive redefinition of fatty liver disease was proposed by an international panel of experts. This review aims to explore current evidence regarding the impact of this new definition on the current understanding of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and clinical trials for fatty liver disease. RECENT FINDINGS The effectiveness of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was compared to the existing criteria for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Recent data robustly suggest the superior utility of MAFLD in identifying patients at high risk for metabolic dysfunction, the hepatic and extra-hepatic complications, as well as those who would benefit from genetic testing, including patients with concomitant liver diseases. This change in name and criteria also appears to have improved disease awareness among patients and physicians. SUMMARY The transformation in name and definition from NAFLD to MAFLD represents an important milestone, which indicates significant tangible progress towards a more inclusive, equitable, and patient-centred approach to addressing the profound challenges of this disease. Growing evidence has illustrated the broader and specific contexts that have tremendous potential for positively influencing the diagnosis and treatment. In addition, the momentum accompanying this name change has included widespread public attention to the unique burden of this previously underappreciated disease.

Abstract
Metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) affects a third of the population and is a leading cause of liver-related death. Since no effective treatments exist, novel approaches to drug development are required. Unfortunately, outdated terminology and definitions of the disease are hampering efforts to develop new drugs and treatments. An international consensus panel has put forth an influential proposal for the disease to be renamed from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to MAFLD, including a proposal for how the disease should be diagnosed. As allies with the many stakeholders in MAFLD care-including patients, patients' advocates, clinicians, researchers, nurse and allied health groups, regional societies, and others-we are aware of the negative consequences of the NAFLD term and definition. We share the sense of urgency for change and will act in new ways to achieve our goals. Although there is much work to be done to overcome clinical inertia and reverse worrisome recent trends, the MAFLD initiative provides a firm foundation to build on. It provides a roadmap for moving forward toward more efficient care and affordable, sustainable drug and device innovation in MAFLD care. We hope it will bring promising new opportunities for a brighter future for MAFLD care and improve care and outcomes for patients of one of the globe's largest and costliest public health burdens. From this viewpoint, we have revisited this initiative through the perspectives of drug development and regulatory science.

Abstract
Polarizing opinions have recently arisen in hepatology on the name and redefinition of fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction. In spite of growing and robust evidence of the superior utility of the term metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) definition for clinical and academic practice, controversy abounds. It should therefore come, as no surprise that the most common arguments used in contrarian op-eds is that there are no consensus on any name change. In this context, we suggest that discourse on an accurate understanding of what scientific consensus means, the various methods of achieving consensus, as well as other alternative models for reaching agreement is pivotal for the field. In this opinion piece, we provide an overview of these aspects as it applies to the case of fatty liver disease. We provide evidence that consensus on a change from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to MAFLD has already been achieved. We believe that the time has come for redirecting stakeholder focus and energy on capitalizing on the momentum generated by the debate to improve the lives of people at its centre, our patients.

Abstract
The prevalence of metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is rapidly increasing and affects up to two billion individuals globally, and this has also resulted in increased risks for cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver transplants. In addition, it has also been linked to extrahepatic consequences, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and various types of cancers. However, only a small proportion of patients with MAFLD develop these complications. Therefore, the identification of high-risk patients is paramount. Liver fibrosis is the major determinant in developing these complications. Although, liver biopsy is still considered the gold standard for the assessment of patients with MAFLD. Because of its invasive nature, among many other limitations, the search for noninvasive biomarkers for MAFLD remains an area of intensive research. In this review, we provide an update on the current and future biomarkers of MAFLD, including a discussion of the associated genetics, epigenetics, microbiota, and metabolomics. We also touch on the next wave of multiomic-based biomarkers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a new concept, proposed in 2020; however, its applicability in Asia populations has yet to be evaluated. Therefore, we aimed to compare the difference in epidemiological and clinical characteristics between MAFLD and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among Asian populations. METHODS Based on the Jinchang cohort, 30,633 participants were collected. The prevalence and incidence of MAFLD and NAFLD were used to analyze the epidemic characteristics and its overlapping effects. In addition, the corresponding clinical characteristics of the two diagnostic criteria populations were compared. RESULTS The prevalence rates of MAFLD and NAFLD were 21.03% and 18.83%, respectively. After an average 2.28-year follow-up, the incidence densities of MAFLD and NAFLD were 41.58 per 1,000 person-years and 37.69 per 1,000 person-years, respectively. With the increase of baseline age, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) levels, the prevalence and incidence of MAFLD and NAFLD were on the rise (all p trend<0.05). Among the total patients diagnosed at baseline or follow-up, most patients had both MAFLD and NAFLD, accounting for 78.84% and 82.88%, respectively. Compared with NAFLD, MAFLD patients had greater proportions of males and metabolic diseases (diabetes, dyslipidemia), and had higher BMI, WC, liver enzymes, blood glucose, and lipid levels in the baseline diagnosis patients (p<0.05). Additionally, lean MAFLD patients had higher metabolic disorders than lean NAFLD patients (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Compared with NAFLD, the newly proposed definition of MAFLD is more practical and accurate, and it can help identify more fatty liver patients with high-risk diseases.

Metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide - with an estimated global prevalence of 37%. Different from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is an exclusion diagnosis, MAFLD is defined by a set of positive criteria. This recent change in terminology is challenging because MAFLD and NAFLD denote two similar, albeit not identical, clinical populations. When the diagnostic criteria for MAFLD are applied, liver histology appears more severe and clinical outcomes are less favorable. However, the clinical management of MAFLD and NAFLD remains similar. While liver biopsy is still the reference standard for achieving a final diagnosis, noninvasive imaging- or biomarker-based diagnostic modalities are currently gaining momentum. However, liver biopsy should be recommended when diagnostic challenges exist. In this review, we compared the epidemiology, natural history, and diagnosis of MAFLD with respect to the traditional NAFLD definition.

Abstract
Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has appeared as the leading liver disease worldwide. Whereas the terminology nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) mainly reflected a negative selection and exclusion of alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), the new definition made its focus on the association of MAFLD with overweight/obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic risk factors especially also in normal weight/lean subjects. Several studies from the past 2 years have now used the new definition and have provided substantial information that this new definition might be accurate. Studies from the past 2 years have provided evidence that the new definition might be especially advantageous in the characterization and identification of patients with significant fibrosis. This has also been demonstrated in the well-known Rotterdam study in which the MAFLD-only group showed a higher rate of fibrosis and liver stiffness. MAFLD might also be able to predict all-cause mortality as demonstrated in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Furthermore, MAFLD might improve characterization of the cardiovascular risk of this patient population. As the term MAFLD has not yet been accepted universally, it remains important to coordinate efforts globally to adapt to this new definition and especially involve all specialities dealing with metabolic disorders such as diabetologists to further improve its definition and to prepare the medical community for its future use. The aim of this review is to summarize and critically address evidence emerging over the past 2 years that usage of the term MAFLD could be helpful in daily clinical practice.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now the most common cause of chronic liver disease, worldwide. The molecular pathogenesis of NAFLD is complex, involving numerous signalling molecules including microRNAs (miRNAs). Dysregulation of miRNA expression is associated with hepatic inflammation, fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although miRNAs are also critical to the cellular response to vitamin D, mediating regulation of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and vitamin D’s anticancer effects, a role for vitamin D regulated miRNAs in NAFLD pathogenesis has been relatively unexplored. Therefore, this review aimed to critically assess the evidence for a potential subset of miRNAs that are both dysregulated in NAFLD and modulated by vitamin D. Comprehensive review of 89 human studies identified 25 miRNAs found dysregulated in more than one NAFLD study. In contrast, only 17 studies, including a protocol for a trial in NAFLD, had examined miRNAs in relation to vitamin D status, response to supplementation, or vitamin D in the context of the liver. This paper summarises these data and reviews the biological roles of six miRNAs (miR-21, miR-30, miR-34, miR-122, miR-146, miR-200) found dysregulated in multiple independent NAFLD studies. While modulation of miRNAs by vitamin D has been understudied, integrating the data suggests seven vitamin D modulated miRNAs (miR-27, miR-125, miR-155, miR-192, miR-223, miR-375, miR-378) potentially relevant to NAFLD pathogenesis. Our summary tables provide a significant resource to underpin future hypothesis-driven research, and we conclude that the measurement of serum and hepatic miRNAs in response to vitamin D supplementation in larger trials is warranted.

Abstract
Fatty liver is now a major cause of liver disease in the Asia-Pacific region. Liver diseases in this region have distinctive characteristics. First, fatty liver is frequently observed in lean/normal-weight individuals. However, there is no standard definition of this unique phenotype. Second, fatty liver is often observed in patients with concomitant viral hepatitis. The exclusion of viral hepatitis from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease limits its value and detracts from the investigation and holistic management of coexisting fatty liver in patients with viral hepatitis. Third, fatty liver-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is generally categorized as non-B non-C HCC. Fourth, the population is aging rapidly, and it is imperative to develop a practicable, low-intensity exercise program for elderly patients. Fifth, most patients and non-specialized healthcare professionals still lack an awareness of the significance of fatty liver both in terms of intrahepatic and extrahepatic disease and cancer. Recently, an international expert panel proposed a new definition of fatty liver: metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). One feature of MAFLD is that metabolic dysfunction is a prerequisite for diagnosis. Pertinent to regional issues, MAFLD also provides its diagnostic criteria in lean/normal-weight individuals. Furthermore, MAFLD is independent of any concomitant liver disease, including viral hepatitis. Therefore, MAFLD may be a more suitable definition for fatty liver in the Asia-Pacific region. In this review, we introduce the regional characteristics of fatty liver and discuss the advantages of MAFLD for improving clinical practice for liver disease in the region.

Abstract
The term non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and its definition, have limitations for both adults and children. The definition is most problematic for children, for whom alcohol consumption is usually not a concern. This problematic definition has prompted a consensus to rename and redefine adult NAFLD associated with metabolic dysregulation to metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Similarities, distinctions, and differences exist in the causes, natural history, and prognosis of fatty liver diseases in children compared with adults. In this Viewpoint we, an international panel, propose an overarching framework for paediatric fatty liver diseases and an age-appropriate MAFLD definition based on sex and age percentiles. The framework recognises the possibility of other coexisting systemic fatty liver diseases in children. The new MAFLD diagnostic criteria provide paediatricians with a conceptual scaffold for disease diagnosis, risk stratification, and improved clinical and multidisciplinary care, and they align with a definition that is valid across the lifespan.

Abstract
Despite the rising health burden of metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), there are no approved pharmacotherapies for MAFLD currently. This situation led to a significant escalation in drug development and randomized controlled trials for MAFLD, particularly as novel information about its molecular pathogenesis unfolds. Currently, there are numerous investigational candidate drugs for MAFLD in various stages of clinical development that act on different pathophysiological processes, such as metabolism/steatosis, inflammation or fibrosis. Here, we provide an update on drug development for the treatment of MAFLD and discuss the prospects and challenges for improving and accelerating the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease drug discovery pipeline.

Abstract
In 2020, international consensus guidelines recommended the renaming of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), supported by diagnostic criteria. MAFLD affects up to 25% of the global population. However, the rates of MAFLD are likely to be underestimated due to the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. Within the next decade, MAFLD has been projected to become a major cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide, as well as the most common indication for liver transplantation in the US. This transition in terminology and clinical criteria may increase momentum and clinical evidence at multiple levels, including patient diagnosis, management, and care, and provide the basis for new research areas and clinical development for therapeutics. The diagnostic criteria for MAFLD are practical, simple, and superior to the existing NAFLD criteria for identifying patients at increased risk of developing progressive liver disease. This Editorial aims to present the historical evolution of the terminology for fatty liver disease and the advantages of diagnosis, patient management, and future research on MAFLD.

Abstract
With the global epidemics of obesity and associated conditions, including type 2 diabetes, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cancer, and cognitive changes, the prevalence of multimorbidity is rapidly increasing worldwide. In this Review, a panel of international experts from across the spectrum of metabolic diseases come together to identify the challenges and provide perspectives on building a framework for a virtual primary care-driven, patient-centred, multidisciplinary model to deliver holistic care for patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and associated metabolic diseases. We focus on clinical care and innovative trial design for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and associated metabolic diseases. This work represents a call to action to promote collaboration and partnerships between stakeholders for improving the lives of people with, or at risk of, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and associated metabolic diseases.

Abstract
Objectives: To determine the relationship between the endometrial thickness (ET) and metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in the postmenopausal women who have a comprehensive health examination. Methods: This was a population-based, retrospective observational study of the prevalence of MAFLD in 8594 postmenopausal women with different ET in the Quality Control Center of Health Examination in Chongqing, China. Binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to obtain odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for patients of different ET with MAFLD after adjusting for age. Results: The incidences of MAFLD were 28.6% (1352), 30.3% (1058), 34.9% (133) in postmenopausal women with ET of < 3 mm, 3 mm ≤ & < 5 mm, and ≥ 5 mm, respectively. Compared with a baseline ET of less than 5.0 mm, the risk of MAFLD in patients with ET of ≥5.0 mm is higher (OR=1.291, 95% CI: 1.041-1.603, P<0.05). After adjustment for age, a statistically significant positive correlation was still observed. The increased prevalence of MAFLD in patients with ET of 3 mm ≤ &<5 mm (OR=1.110, 95% CI: 1.008-1.223) and ≥5 mm (OR=1.383, 95% CI: 1.109-1.724) achieved statistical significance, respectively. In addition, multiple logistic analyses controlling for age also confirmed the finding of positive correlation among body mass index (BMI) and ET. Conclusion: Our results suggest that there is a positive correlation between MAFLD and ET in postmenopausal women. In addition, increased BMI is also associated with an increased risk of thickened endometrium.
