Publication trends of the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry: A bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVE

The Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry (JERD) stands out as one of the most prominent international journals publishing research in esthetic dentistry. This study analyzed articles published by JERD since the year 2000 through bibliometric analysis.

METHODOLOGY

The search was conducted in January 2024 using Scopus. The following data were extracted from the articles: citation count, year, language, access type, funding agency, study design, theme (general and specific), country, institution, authors, and keywords. The VOSviewer software was used to generate collaborative network maps among the data. Dimensions were consulted to measure altmetric data. Google Trends was used to investigate the global popularity of JERD research.

RESULTS

A total of 1394 articles were included in this analysis. Citation count ranged from 0 to 625 (average: 16.9). Articles were published between 2000 and 2023. Laboratory studies were more prevalent (n = 850), with the most investigated general theme being restorative procedures (n = 882), and the highlighted specific theme being the use of composite resin (n = 327). The United States had the highest number of articles (n = 640), with the diverse distribution among other countries. The most common keyword was "cad/cam" (n = 63). VOSviewer demonstrated high collaboration among countries. Intense mentions were identified primarily on Facebook. According to Google Trends, Egypt was the country that searched for JERD the most.

CONCLUSIONS

JERD exhibited significant growth in the number of published articles and their diversity by topics, types, origin (country), number of citations, and impact factor.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The JERD is a journal that publishes studies influencing clinical practice. Identifying the key characteristics of this journal is essential for charting future paths.

Areas of Interest in Dental Education: A Bibliometric Analysis of the Last Decade

This study aimed to perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of journals focused on dental education (Journal of Dental Education and European Journal of Dental Education) from 2014 to 2023. An ISI Web of Science Search was performed in October 2023 with no filters for language or keywords. Published articles between 2014 and 2018, 2019 and 2023, and 2014-2023, along with the top 100 cited articles published within this period were exported as txt files. Keyword and title word network maps and occurrences were generated using VOS Viewer software. Author-affiliated countries with the most publications were tabulated from the Web of Science. Dental education and dental students and education were consistently in the top six keywords and title word occurrences in all periods and top 100 cited articles. Similar trends were observed for keyword and title word network maps with an emphasis on dental education and students. However, the 2019-2023 period saw the emergence of coronavirus disease 2019, three-dimensional printing, virtual reality, and education technology, with the earlier period (2014-2018) showing clusters around students, perceptions, dental hygiene education, and assessment. The United States ranked top of the list for most published author-affiliated countries, with England, Canada, Australia, and Saudi Arabia in the top six for all periods analyzed. In conclusion, within the limitations of this study, areas of interest in dental education journals in the last decade were identified along with the countries with most publications.

The top 100 most cited articles in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma over the last decade: A bibliometric analysis and review

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) represents the most prevalent cancer globally. The past decade has witnessed significant advancements in BCC treatment, primarily through bibliometric studies. Aiming to perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of BCC treatments to comprehend the research landscape and identify trends within this domain, a dataset comprising 100 scientific publications from the Web of Science Core Collection was analyzed. Country co-operation, journal co-citation, theme bursts, keyword co-occurrence, author co-operation, literature co-citation, and field-specific references were examined using VOSviewer and CiteSpace visualization tools. These articles, published between 2013 and 2020, originated predominantly from 30 countries/regions and 159 institutions, with the USA and Germany at the forefront, involving a total of 1118 authors. The keyword analysis revealed significant emphasis on the hedgehog pathway, Mohs micrographic surgery, and photodynamic therapy. The research shows developed nations are at the forefront in advancing BCC therapies, with significant focus on drugs targeting the hedgehog pathway. This treatment avenue has emerged as a crucial area, meriting considerable attention in BCC therapeutic strategies.

A bibliometric analysis of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology: Fifty years of publications

OBJECTIVES

In celebration of the journal's 50th anniversary, the aim of the study was to review the whole collection of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology (CDOE) publications from 1973 to 2022 and provide a complete overview of the main publication characteristics.

METHODS

The study used bibliometric techniques such as performance and science mapping analysis of 3428 articles extracted from the Scopus database. The data were analysed using the 'Bibliometrix' package in R. The journal's scientific production was examined, along with the yearly citation count, the distribution of publications based on authors, the corresponding author's country and affiliation and citation count, citing source and keywords. Bibliometric network maps were constructed to determine the conceptual, intellectual and social collaborative structure over the past 50 years. The trending research topics and themes were identified.

RESULTS

The total number of articles and average citations has increased over the years. D Locker, AJ Spencer, A Sheiham and WM Thomson were the most frequently published authors, and PE Petersen, GD Slade and AI Ismail published papers with the highest citations. The most published countries were the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil and Canada, frequently engaging in collaborative efforts. The most common keywords used were 'dental caries', 'oral epidemiology' and 'oral health'. The trending topics were healthcare and health disparities, social determinants of health, systematic review and health inequalities. Epidemiology, oral health and disparities were highly researched areas.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric study reviews CDOE's significant contribution to dental public health by identifying key research trends, themes, influential authors and collaborations. The findings provide insights into the need to increase publications from developing countries, improve gender diversity in authorship and broaden the scope of research themes.

Bibliometric analysis and visualization of top papers in dentistry from 2012 to 2022 based on essential science indicators

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to analyze and visualize the top dental papers from 2012 to 2022 using data from essential science indicators (ESIs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The present study was conducted using library and retrospective bibliometric analysis methods. Additionally, a science map has been created. Web of Science was searched on January 18, 2023. The results were limited to the top papers in ESIs. The bibliometric information of the top papers was evaluated. Next, the VOSviewer was used to perform a co-occurrence analysis and visualize data.

RESULTS

The findings showed that Mariano Belén Sanz and Maurizio S. Tonetti were the top two authors. The University of London and the University of Bern had the highest number of articles. These articles were published in 55 journals. According to the analysis of keyword co-occurrence, the most frequently used keywords in the field of dentistry include "periodontitis," "dental implants," "periodontal disease," "mechanical properties," "peri-implantitis," "oral health," "dental caries," "dental materials," "3D printing."

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study enable readers to pinpoint the authors, organizations, countries, and journals that have made the biggest contributions to the list of the most often cited dentistry papers. In medicine, bibliometric citation analysis is frequently used to assist researchers in learning the fundamentals of a subject and pinpoint subtopics of broad interest for additional study.

Bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited articles on bone grafting in dentistry

AIM

This bibliometric study analyzed the characteristics of the 100 most cited articles on bone grafts in dentistry.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A database search was performed on the Web of Science Core Collection using a specific search strategy. Scopus and Google Scholar were also consulted for citation comparisons. Data extracted included: title, citation metrics, publication year, journal, study design, graft material, surgical technique, authors, institution, and country. Bibliometric networks were generated using VOSviewer.

RESULTS

The identified articles were published between 1991 and 2019. Citation counts ranged from 120 to 1161 (mean: 240, 30). Clinical Oral Implants Research was the most cited journal (5175 citations; 25/100). Xenogeneic bone graft material was the most frequently used (5130 citations; 22/100). Europe had 62 articles (14,604 citations), and the United States was the most prominent country (5209 citations; 22/100). The University of Bern had the highest number of citations (2565 citations; 13/100), with Buser D as the author with the largest number of articles (2648 citations; 12/100).

CONCLUSION

This study shows the scientific progress on bone grafts in dentistry. The use of xenogeneic grafts for horizontal and/or vertical ridge augmentation was the most prominent trend.

Publication Trends and Collaborative Patterns in Periodontics Research from Saudi Arabia: A Bibliometric Analysis

Aim

To perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis encompassing all articles published on periodontics from Saudi Arabia.

Materials and Methods

Using the Scopus database on June 8, 2023, the search term "Periodontic*" was entered in the primary search bar to extract all documents published on periodontics. Following, the year filter was applied to include articles published from the earliest available date until the date of data collection, excluding 2023. Next, we used the country/region filter to limit our documents to Saudi Arabia (n = 1929). We used Microsoft Excel (v.16) to examine periodical growth, collaboration patterns, influential institutions, frequently used sources, international research collaboration, and most-cited papers.

Results

Saudi Arabia ranked 11th in periodontics research, contributing 3.43% to the global research output, reaching a peak of 7.63% in 2022. Notably, there was significant growth observed during the last 5 years of the study, with an average of 232.8 documents per year. The analysis of citations revealed that the selected documents received an average of 13.39 citations per document. Indigenous literature received less citation on average compared to internationally collaborated documents. King Saud University ranked first among the most productive institutions in Saudi Arabia, accounting 40.74% of the total output. The Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice published the highest number of documents, followed by the Saudi Dental Journal and the Journal of Periodontology. In terms of citation impact, the Journal of Periodontology emerged as the most influential, with an average of 32.83 citations per document. Research collaboration was most prevalent with researchers from the United States (22.03%), although Germany ranked first in terms of citation impact.

Conclusion

Saudi Arabia's contribution to periodontics research has shown significant growth in recent years. The collaborative efforts with international researchers, particularly those from the United States, have played a crucial role in fostering advancements within the field.

Clinical applications and outcomes of the surgical tooth extrusion technique: A bibliometric analysis from 1982 to 2023

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The surgical extrusion technique has been advocated for severely damaged teeth as well as for intruded and unerupted teeth. However, a quantitative literature analysis is lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this bibliometric analysis was to provide a comprehensive overview of surgical extrusion, assess the applications and outcomes, and evaluate topics for future research.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An electronic search was conducted in leading databases in April 2023. Human studies with surgical tooth extrusion or synonyms in titles or abstracts were included. A bibliographic analysis, co-occurrence analysis, and coupling of publications were performed. The analysis of variance was used to assess the characteristics of the subgroups based on indications. The survival rate was evaluated by using the Kaplan-Meier method in the R software program (α=.05).

RESULTS

Fifty-one studies from 1982 to 2023 were included. The Journal of Dental Traumatology and the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry combined published approximately one-third of the papers and acquired the most citations. The burst detection of keywords revealed 4 popular research topics: the Benex extraction system, chlorhexidine for infection control, rigid or semi-rigid splints to decrease the risk of complications, and novel restorative materials to improve esthetics. An overall survival rate of 96.36% was reported among 316 participants with 330 extruded teeth. No significant differences were found in study types, geographic distribution, year of publication, or citation counts among the 4 subgroups (surgical extrusion for subgingival fractures, extensive caries, intruded teeth, and unerupted teeth). A significant difference was observed among the Kaplan-Meier curves of the 4 subgroups (P=.030).

CONCLUSIONS

Surgical extrusion may be used to save otherwise nonrestorable teeth, and the procedure has shown promising survival rates when teeth are properly selected and the procedure is well executed. Subgingival fractures and extensive caries near bone level are the predominant indications, as well as intruded and unerupted teeth. Surgical extrusion is a reliable treatment option to facilitate tooth restoration for severely damaged teeth, especially for maxillary anterior teeth.

Top 100 cited classical articles in sentinel lymph nodes biopsy for breast cancer

Background

The sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) takes on a critical significance in breast cancer surgery since it is the gold standard for assessing axillary lymph node (ALN) metastasis and determining whether to perform axillary lymph node dissection (ALND). A bibliometric analysis is beneficial to visualize characteristics and hotspots in the field of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs), and it is conducive to summarizing the important themes in the field to provide more insights into SLNs and facilitate the management of SLNs.

Materials and methods

Search terms relating to SLNs were aggregated and searched in the Web of Science core collection database to identify the top 100 most cited articles. Bibliometric tools were employed to identify and analyze publications for annual article volume, authors, countries, institutions, keywords, as well as hotspot topics.

Results

The period was from 1998 to 2018. The total number of citations ranged from 160 to 1925. LANCET ONCOLOGY and JAMA-JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION were the top two journals in which the above articles were published. Giuliano, AE was the author with the highest number of articles in this field with 15. EUROPEAN INST ONCOL is the institution with the highest number of publications, with 35 articles. Hotspots include the following 4 topics, false-negative SLNs after neoadjuvant chemotherapy; prediction of metastatic SLNs; quality of life and postoperative complications; and lymphography of SLNs.

Conclusion

This study applies bibliometric tools to analyze the most influential literature, the top 100 cited articles in the field of SLNB, to provide researchers and physicians with research priorities and hotspots.

Bibliometric Analysis of the 100 Most-Cited Articles on Periodontics in the Arab World

AIM

Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with diseases of the supporting and investing structures of the teeth including the gingiva, cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. The current study aimed to scrutinize the bibliometric indicators of the 100 most-cited articles on periodontics contributed by authors affiliated with the Arab countries.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The bibliometric research method was used for the 100 most-cited articles retrieved from the Scopus database on May 9, 2023. The keywords periodontitis, periodontology, gingivitis, periodontal, gingiva, and periodontium were inserted, and then the Arab countries were selected from the country's filter. The 100 most-cited articles were accessed. The bibliometric indicators such as periodic distribution of articles, their study design, nature of research, contributed by different Arab countries, international research collaboration, and author's used keywords were analyzed. Microsoft Excel version 16 (Microsoft Corporation, Washington, United States), VOSviewer (Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University, The Netherlands), and SPSS Statistics version 27 (IBM Corp. Released 2020. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 27.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) were used for data analysis.

RESULTS

A slow progress (4.50%) was found in periodontics literature before 2000 in the Arab countries, but a significant growth (75%) was recorded during the past 10 years (January 1, 2014, to May 9, 2023). The 100 most-cited articles on periodontics by the Arab countries were published from 1995 to 2021, and these articles gained citations with an average of 92.18 citations per articles. Case-control and review studies were the preferred study designs, and periodontology and implantology were the top two subject categories. About one-third of the articles were published in the Journal of Periodontology and the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. Saudi Arabia contributed the highest number of the most-cited articles, followed by Egypt and Jordan, but the articles contributed by the United Arab Emirates were the most influential. The United States and Germany were the top-ranked countries in international research collaboration.

CONCLUSION

The findings demonstrate that periodontics research increased remarkably during the past 10 years. Saudi Arabia stands not only on the topmost rank in overall research productivity in the Arab countries but also surpasses the rest of the Arab countries in the 100 most-cited articles. Saudi Arabia contributed 26 articles with the United States, while Jordan contributed the highest ratio of indigenous research.

Bibliometric Analysis on GABA-A Receptors Research Based on CiteSpace and VOSviewer

Background

GABA-A receptors are the primary mediators of brain inhibitory neurotransmission. In the past years, many studies focused on this channel to decipher the pathogenesis of related diseases but lacked bibliometric analysis research. This study aims to explore the research status and identify the research trends of GABA-A receptor channels.

Methods

Publications related to GABA-A receptor channels were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection from 2012 to 2022. After screening, the VOSviewer 1.6.18 and Citespace 5.8 R3 were used for bibliometric analysis from journals, countries, institutions, authors, co-cited references and keywords.

Results

We included 12,124 publications in the field of GABA-A receptor channels for analysis. The data shows that although there was a slight decrease in annual publications from 2012 to 2021, it remained at a relatively high level. Most publications were in the domain of neuroscience. Additionally, the United States was the most prolific country, followed by China. Univ Toronto was the most productive institution, and James M Cook led essential findings in this field. Furthermore, brain activation, GABAAR subunits expression, modulation mechanism in pain and anxiety behaviors and GABA and dopamine were paid attention to by researchers. And top research frontiers were molecular docking, autoimmune encephalitic series, obesity, sex difference, diagnosis and management, EEG and KCC2.

Conclusion

Taken together, academic attention on GABA-A receptor channels was never neglected since 2012. Our analysis identified key information, such as core countries, institutions and authors in this field. Molecular docking, autoimmune encephalitic series, obesity, sex difference, diagnosis and management, EEG and KCC2 will be the future research direction.

A Bibliometric Study on the Top 101 Most-Cited Articles of Dental Journals of the Middle East/North Africa Countries From 2011 to 2021

Introduction: This retrospective descriptive study evaluated the Scopus-indexed dental journals and their most-cited documents affiliated with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries from 2011 to 2021. Methods: Dental journals affiliated with MENA countries, their bibliometric indicators (SJR, CiteScore, SNIP, and H-index), and the 101 most cited articles of the considered journals were extracted and studied through descriptive statistics. In addition, the "citation per year" of each top 101 articles was calculated. Spearman's rho test was used for pairwise comparisons of the correlation coefficient values between each two of the considered bibliometric indicators. Results: The number of citations of the 101 most-cited papers ranged from 35 to 203. The mean (SD) citations of studied articles were 61.33 (37.58) and the median was 46. Furthermore, CiteScore had the highest significant correlation with SJR (r=0.828, P˂0.001). Moreover, the citation per year of the top 101 documents had no significant relationship with any of the journals' bibliometric indicators. Conclusion: Because journal performance and citation rate are multi-dimensional concepts, a single metric cannot express them thoroughly despite correlations between indices. "European Journal of Dentistry" from Turkey, "Saudi Dental Journal" from Saudi Arabia, and "Iranian Endodontic Journal" and "Journal of Lasers in Medical Sciences" both from Iran had the highest ranks in the SCImago portal and the highest scores in bibliometric indices amongst the MENA dental journals.

Scientific production of an oral implantology journal: a 5-year bibliometric study

Oral implantology is a science in constant evolution, with a considerable number of articles being published every year in scientific journals. Publications can be analyzed through bibliometric analysis, thus observing the evolution and trends of the articles published in the journal. To evaluate, through bibliometric analysis, the scientific production of Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research (CIDRR) and its evolution and trends in the last 5 years (2016-2020).All articles published in CIDRR in the last 5 years were reviewed and classified according to the year of publication, volume, number, the number of authors, demographic data of the first and last author, the geographical scope of the article, the number of affiliations of the authors, research topic, type of study, and study design. The association between these variables and citation counts was also analyzed. 599 articles were analyzed. 77.4% were authored by 4-6 authors, obtaining 78.4% from 1 to 3 different affiliations. Male researchers predominated in both the first and last authorship. China showed the highest number of publications when comparing the origin of the authors' affiliations individually; however, most researchers (40.9%) were from the European Union (EU)-Western Europe area. The most studied topic was the implant/abutment design/treatment of the surface (19.1%). Clinical research articles accounted for 92.99% of the publications, of which cross-sectional observational studies prevailed (21.7%). The presence of articles from the United States of America-Canada and EU-Western Europe was positively correlated with the impact factor. This study revealed an increasing trend in Asian research production, particularly Chinese, whereas production of European origin showed a decrease. Clinical studies increased their relative weight to the detriment of translational ones. A growing tendency in the relative weights of female authors was appreciated. Journal citations were associated with certain study variables.

Gene Targets of CAR-T Cell Therapy for Glioblastoma

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive primary brain tumor with a poor prognosis following conventional therapeutic interventions. Moreover, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) severely impedes the permeation of chemotherapy drugs, thereby reducing their efficacy. Consequently, it is essential to develop novel GBM treatment methods. A novel kind of pericyte immunotherapy known as chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell treatment uses CAR-T cells to target and destroy tumor cells without the aid of the antigen with great specificity and in a manner that is not major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-restricted. It has emerged as one of the most promising therapy techniques with positive clinical outcomes in hematological cancers, particularly leukemia. Due to its efficacy in hematologic cancers, CAR-T cell therapy could potentially treat solid tumors, including GBM. On the other hand, CAR-T cell treatment has not been as therapeutically effective in treating GBM as it has in treating other hematologic malignancies. CAR-T cell treatments for GBM have several challenges. This paper reviewed the use of CAR-T cell therapy in hematologic tumors and the selection of targets, difficulties, and challenges in GBM.

A bibliometric analysis of sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction from 2002 to 2022

Background

Sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (SIMD) has a significant contribution to sepsis-caused death in critically ill patients. In recent years, the number of published articles related to SIMD has increased rapidly. However, there was no literature that systematically analyzed and evaluated these documents. Thus, we aimed to lay a foundation for researchers to quickly understand the research hotspots, evolution processes and development trends in the SIMD field via a bibliometric analysis.

Methods

Articles related to SIMD were retrieved and extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection on July 19th, 2022. CiteSpace (version 6.1.R2) and VOSviewer (version 1.6.18) were used for performing visual analysis.

Results

A total of 1,076 articles were included. The number of SIMD-related articles published each year has increased significantly. These publications mainly came from 56 countries, led by China and the USA, and 461 institutions, but without stable and close cooperation. As authors, Li Chuanfu published the most articles, while Rudiger Alain had the most co-citations. Shock was the journal with the most studies, and Critical Care Medicine was the most commonly cited journal. All keywords were grouped into six clusters, some of which represented the current and developing research directions of SIMD as the molecular mechanisms.

Conclusion

Research on SIMD is flourishing. It is necessary to strengthen cooperation and exchanges between countries and institutions. The molecular mechanisms of SIMD, especially oxidative stress and regulated cell death, will be critical subjects in the future.

Mapping knowledge landscapes and emerging trends of the links between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis: A bibliometric analysis

Background

Osteoarthritis has the characteristics of degenerative changes in articular cartilage and secondary osteoporosis, and it is a common chronic irreversible joint disease. In addition to affecting articular cartilage, subchondral bone, joint capsule and synovial membrane also undergo pathological changes during the development of the disease. Multiple studies have revealed that patients with osteoarthritis were found to have a significantly increased risk of osteoporosis, which also contributes to the progression of osteoarthritis. However, in the current existing studies, we found that no scholars have used bibliometric analysis in the study of the relationship between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. From the perspective of bibliometrics, this study summarizes in detail the degree of cooperation between countries, research institutions, authors, and related journals in the field of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis research and their respective influence. In this way, the evolution of knowledge structure, the change of research focus and the hot topics with research potential in the future can be further visualized and analyzed.

Methods

Search the Web of Science core collection in Science Citation Index Expanded for articles and reviews of research on osteoarthritis and osteoporosis from 1998 to 2021. Bibliometric tools such as VOSviewer, CiteSpace, were be frequently used in our study. They are mainly used to analyze collaborations between countries, research institutions, and publication authors. Meantime, co-citation analysis of journals, co-occurrence analysis of keywords and subject categories will also be reflected in the study.

Results

According to the search strategy, 1,078 publications were included during the period 1998-2021. And the number of annual publications on the relationship between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis is on the rise. The United States has achieved the most and contributed the most in this field and the Boston University was the most prolific institution. For the statistical analysis of published publications, Reginster JY had the highest number of publications, while Felson DT had the highest co-citation frequency. Respectively, Osteoarthritis And Cartilage was the most productive journal in this area of research. The keywords "inflammation," "expression," and "mesenchymal stem cells" may also be the development trend and research hotspot of the future research direction in this field.

Conclusions

In our study, the relationship between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis was analyzed by using literature measurement. These analysis results can lead researchers to learn more directly about the trend in this area and provide guidance for determining popular research directions.

Public Health Concern on Sedentary Behavior and Cardiovascular Disease: A Bibliometric Analysis of Literature from 1990 to 2022

Background and Objectives: Cardiovascular disease is a long-term threat to global public health security, while sedentary behavior is a modifiable behavior among cardiovascular risk factors. This study aimed to analyze the peer-reviewed literature published globally on sedentary behavior and cardiovascular disease (SB-CVD) and identify the hotspots and frontiers within this research area. Materials and Methods: Publications on SB-CVD from 1990 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were applied to perform bibliometric and knowledge mapping visualization analyses. Results: A total of 2071 publications were retrieved, presenting a gradual growing trend. Authors from the USA topped the list with 748 (36.12%), followed by authors from England (373, 18.01%) and Australia (354, 17.09%). The University of Queensland, Australia, led with 95 (4.5%) publications. The top five active authors were all from Australia, while Dunstan D and Owen N published the most documents (56, 2.7%). A total of 71.27% of the publications received funding, and the United States Department of Health and Human Services provided 363 (17.53%) grants. Public Environmental Occupational Health (498, 24.05%), Sport Sciences (237, 11.44%), and Cardiac Cardiovascular Systems (212, 10.24%) were the three most popular disciplines, while PLOS One (96, 4.64%) and BMC Public Health (88, 4.25%) were the two most popular journals. Investigations within the SB-CVD research area addressed the entire lifespan, the most popular type of research was the epidemiological study, and the accelerometer was the primary instrument for measuring sedentary behavior. In terms of variables, physical activity and sedentary behavior were the dominant lifestyle behaviors, while obesity and hypertension were common health problems. Occupational physical activity and guidelines are at the frontier and are currently in the burst stage. Conclusions: The last three decades have witnessed the rapid development of the SB-CVD research area, and this study provided further research ideas for subsequent investigations.

Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology: A scientometric analysis

Background

A study related to an overview of the editorial workflow, editorial decision-making and timelines of the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology (IJDVL) had been published earlier. However, a study on publication pattern, citations, contributing organizations, most cited publications etc. of IJDVL has not been performed till now.

Objectives

This study aims to identify and analyse the impact of IJDVL on various scientometric indicators viz. year-wise publication growth, impact factor trend, most contributing organizations, global outreach, most cited papers, and cited and citing journals, over the years 2007 to 2019.

Methods

Data for this study were retrieved from the Web of Science-core collection database of Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate Analytics, 2021) on 12th May 2021. The search was performed by using the advanced search feature of the database. Using the “InCites”, a search for journal citation reports of IJDVL was performed.

Results

The highest number of cumulative citations have been received by publications published in the year 2019 with 2,122 citations which is 91.53% in citable items. In the year 2009 journal, the impact factor was 0.976, which jumped to 2.712 (Journal Citation Reports™ 2018). IJDVL received its highest impact factor (3.030) in the year 2019. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi is the most prolific organization contributing to IJDVL with 51 publications. Among foreign countries, China is leading with reference to most contributions by any foreign country with 51 publications in IJDVL. Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology having an impact factor 8.277 has been cited 145 times in this journal.

Limitations

Only one database was used for the study.

Conclusion

The high proportion of frequently cited articles in recent years, together with its currently high journal impact factor and quartile two-factor, give sustenance to the view that IJDVL publishes high-standard articles relevant to dermatology research and clinical practice.

Bibliometric analysis of research publications in three major orthodontic journals during 2012–2021

Objectives:

This study conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of articles published from 2012 to 2021 in three orthodontic journals: The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO), The Angle Orthodontist (AO), and European Journal of Orthodontics (EJO).

Material and Methods:

Eligible articles published from 2012 to 2021 in AJODO, AO, and EJO were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database and subsequently processed using CiteSpace software to generate their characteristics, including authorship, institution, geographic origin, keywords, and citation profiles.

Results:

The three orthodontic journals published 4001 articles from 370 institutions in 95 countries from 2012 to 2021. The AJODO published the most articles (45.5%) followed by AO (31.3%) and EJO (23.2%). The most prolific country was the United States (US), followed by Brazil, South Korea, China, and Turkey. The authors from the US were heavily engaged in international collaborations, especially with South Korea and Brazil. The country and institutions with the highest citation counts per publication were Italy and the University of Bern (Switzerland), respectively. Pandis N was the most prolific author, and Proffit W was the most-cited author in the 4001 publications. The keywords that emerged most frequently were “children” followed by “orthodontic treatment” and “malocclusion.” Four of the 10 most-cited articles were related to digital dental technology.

Conclusion:

This bibliometric analysis provides a complete picture of the research published in three major orthodontic journals over the past decade. It comprehensively analyzes the authorship, country of origin, institutions, keywords, and citation profiles of the articles.

A bibliometric and subject analysis of 3300 most‐cited articles in dentistry

Objectives

This study aims to analyze the publications that have studied top‐cited articles in dentistry.

Material and Methods

The study is applied research in terms of the purpose and scientometrics descriptive in terms of type, which has been done using the Retrospective Bibliometric Analysis. To retrieve the 100 most‐cited studies in Scopus, an advance search was used. The search results indicate that 33 articles focused on analyzing the 100 most‐cited publications on oral and dental subjects. The bibliographic information, including author, journal, country, institution, citation count, and citation density was analyzed. Then the full text of the articles was reviewed to identify the most productive journal, country, and institute in publishing the 100 most‐cited articles and also article type, study design, level of evidence, and the most important subjects among the 100 most‐cited papers.

Results

In these 33 articles, the topics of 3300 most‐cited articles were introduced, as well as the introduction of the core journals, countries, and institutes in publishing top‐cited articles. The most common research topics in the field of dentistry cover a range of dental public health and pediatric dentistry to adhesive restorative dentistry and implantology. Dental materials, oral medicine, and pathology seem like inseparable topics of common research in dentistry. J Dent Res, which was mentioned in nine articles, was introduced as the journal with the publication of articles of highest citation. J Clin Periodontol and Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology were in the second place, being mentioned in five articles. The USA, and two institutions the University of Texas, and the University of Michigan are orderly core country and institute for the production of most‐cited articles.

Conclusion

Researchers and specialists can get familiar with the most productive author, journals, countries, and different institutes for publishing high‐quality articles in the field of oral and dental subjects by the means of the results of this article. Furthermore, the results of this study ranked the most cited article topics, which are of interest for publication, demonstrating the future map road oral and dental research.

Research trends and hotspots of breast cancer management during the COVID-19 pandemic: A bibliometric analysis

Background

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is disrupting routine medical care of cancer patients, including those who have cancer or are undergoing cancer screening. In this study, breast cancer management during the COVID-19 pandemic (BCMP) is reviewed, and the research trends of BCMP are evaluated by quantitative and qualitative evaluation.

Methods

In this study, published studies relating to BCMP from 1 January 2020 to 1 April 2022 were searched from the Web of Science database (WoS). Bibliometric indicators consisted of publications, research hotspots, keywords, authors, journals, institutions, nations, and h-index.

Results

A total of 182 articles investigating BCMP were searched. The United States of America and the University of Rome Tor Vergata were the nation and the institution with the most publications on BCMP. The first three periodicals with leading published BCMP studies were Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, Breast, and In Vivo. Buonomo OC was the most prolific author in this field, publishing nine articles (9/182, 4.94%). The co-keywords analysis of BCMP suggests that the top hotspots and trends in research are screening, surgery, rehabilitation, emotion, diagnosis, treatment, and vaccine management of breast cancer during the pandemic. The hotspot words were divided into six clusters, namely, screening for breast cancer patients in the pandemic, breast cancer surgery in the pandemic, recovery of breast cancer patients in the pandemic, motion effect of the outbreak on breast cancer patients, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients in the pandemic, and vaccination management for breast cancer patients during a pandemic.

Conclusion

BCMP has received attention from scholars in many nations over the last 3 years. This study revealed significant contributions to BCMP research by nations, institutions, scholars, and journals. The stratified clustering study provided the current status and future trends of BCMP to help physicians with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer through the pandemic, and provide a reference for in-depth clinical studies on BCMP.

Application of lasers in dentistry: a bibliometric study of the top 100 most-cited papers

This bibliometric study analyzed the 100 most-cited papers about the use of lasers and their modalities in dentistry. A search strategy was created using specific keywords related to the topic. A comprehensive search was then conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS-CC) database up to July 2021. Papers that addressed the application of any type of laser and its modalities in dentistry were included. Each paper was cross-matched with the number of citations on Scopus and Google Scholar. The following data were extracted from papers: title, number of citations, authorship, country, year of publication, journal, study design, subject, laser type, and oral health outcomes. The VOSviewer software was used to generate bibliometric networks. The total number of citations ranged from 120 to 4,124 and 23 papers received more than 200 citations. Papers were published from 1964 to 2015. Most papers were from Europe (42%) and Anglo-Saxon America (27%). The USA was the country with more top 100 papers (25%). Papers were published mainly in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (15%) and Lasers in Medical Science (7%). VOSviewer maps demonstrated the existence of national and international research collaborations among institutions and authors. Most studies had a laboratory design (57%) and were about restorative dentistry (32%) and periodontics (21%). This bibliometric study of the top 100 most-cited papers on lasers in dentistry allowed a quantitative and qualitative analysis of this very promising research field, revealing a net of collaboration and the importance of this topic in dentistry.

Mapping the intersection of nanotechnology and SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19: A bibliometric analysis

Background

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has imposed great medical and economic burdens on human society, and nanotechnology is a promising technique for managing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. To drive further studies on anti-COVID-19 nanotechnology, this paper provides an analysis, from a bibliometric perspective, of the intersection of nanotechnology and SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19.

Methods

We analyzed the 2585 publications on nanotechnology and SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 included in the Web of Science Core Collection from January 2019 to March 2022 to determine the bibliometric landscape. The basic bibliometric characteristics are summarized in this article.

Results

Our bibliometric analysis revealed that the intersection between nanotechnology and SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 is a cutting-edge field in the science community and that the related studies were multidisciplinary in nature. Studies on the structural basis of SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV-2 detection assays, and mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 provided the development foundation for this field.

Conclusions

The current research focuses are the development of nanomaterial-based vaccines and SARS-CoV-2 detection methods, and the design of nanomedicines carrying SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors is a relatively burgeoning frontier. In summary, this bibliometric analysis of the intersection of nanotechnology and SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 highlights the current research focuses of this field to inspire future studies on anti-COVID-19 nanotechnologies.

Global Trends and Hotspots in Research on Rehabilitation Robots: A Bibliometric Analysis From 2010 to 2020

Background: In recent years, with the development of medical science and artificial intelligence, research on rehabilitation robots has gained more and more attention, for nearly 10 years in the Web of Science database by journal of rehabilitation robot-related research literature analysis, to parse and track rehabilitation robot research hotspot and front, and provide some guidance for future research.

Methods: This study employed computer retrieval of rehabilitation robot-related research published in the core data collection of the Web of Science database from 2010 to 2020, using CiteSpace 5.7 visualization software. The hotspots and frontiers of rehabilitation robot research are analyzed from the aspects of high-influence countries or regions, institutions, authors, high-frequency keywords, and emergent words.

Results: A total of 3,194 articles were included. In recent years, the research on rehabilitation robots has been continuously hot, and the annual publication of relevant literature has shown a trend of steady growth. The United States ranked first with 819 papers, and China ranked second with 603 papers. Northwestern University ranked first with 161 publications. R. Riener, a professor at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, ranked as the first author with 48 articles. The Journal of Neural Engineering and Rehabilitation has the most published research, with 211 publications. In the past 10 years, research has focused on intelligent control, task analysis, and the learning, performance, and reliability of rehabilitation robots to realize the natural and precise interaction between humans and machines. Research on neural rehabilitation robots, brain–computer interface, virtual reality, flexible wearables, task analysis, and exoskeletons has attracted more and more attention.

Conclusions: At present, the brain–computer interface, virtual reality, flexible wearables, task analysis, and exoskeleton rehabilitation robots are the research trends and hotspots. Future research should focus on the application of machine learning (ML), dimensionality reduction, and feature engineering technologies in the research and development of rehabilitation robots to improve the speed and accuracy of algorithms. To achieve wide application and commercialization, future rehabilitation robots should also develop toward mass production and low cost. We should pay attention to the functional needs of patients, strengthen multidisciplinary communication and cooperation, and promote rehabilitation robots to better serve the rehabilitation medical field.

Bibliometric and Visualized Analysis of 2011-2020 Publications on Physical Activity Therapy for Diabetes

Background

This study was designed to investigate the global emerging trends of physical activity therapy for diabetes based on a bibliometric analysis of the publications.

Methods

Publication papers from 2011 to 2020 were retrieved from the database of "Web of Science Core Collection" with the topic search. A number of papers, citations, authors, countries, institutions, and references were extracted. CiteSpace was used to analyze co-citation on authors, collaborations between countries and institutions, and detect the emerging trends of burst keywords and references.

Results

A total of 2651 publications were recruited in this study and showed an upward trend of annual publications. Diabetes obesity & metabolism (journal), the United States (country), Harvard University (institution), and Kaku K (author) published the most papers in this research field. "Impaired glucose tolerance" (2011-2012) was the highest strength burst keyword, while "cardiovascular outcome" (2017-2020) was the most burst keyword in the last 5 years. Moreover, "Standards of medical care in diabetes - 2014" was the strongest burst reference.

Conclusion

"Physical activity therapy for diabetes" has been accepted remarkably over the last 10 years. The keywords of "impaired glucose tolerance," "Cardiovascular outcome," "improves glycemic control," "Self-management," and exercise type including "Aerobic exercise, muscle strength" may be the latest research frontiers.

Achievements and Visibility of Scientific Publications of All Peruvian Medical Schools: A 5-Year Scientometric Analyses

Objective

To evaluate the bibliometric profile of the national academic production of public and private medical schools in Scopus after the publication of a new university law (2015–2020).

Methods

A descriptive bibliometric study was conducted. The secondary data corresponding to the 42 Peruvian medical schools that had scientific publications in Scopus from 2015 to 2020 were evaluated, and the Affiliation ID of each Peruvian institution was considered. Data were analysed using SciVal.

Results

The total production of the Peruvian medical schools was 5406 manuscripts (100%), of which 3018 (56%) were included in the ‘clinical medicine' category. The total production of publications in Peru from 2015 to 2020 was 21597 manuscripts, of which medical publications accounted for 7950, with only 5406 manuscripts belonging to the Faculties of Medicine of Peru. The Peruvian Journal of Experimental Medicine and Public Health had published the highest number of manuscripts (500 articles), with an approximate publication citation of two.

Conclusion

There was a constant increase in the scientific production of Peruvian medical schools from 2015 to 2020. Additionally, it was found that medical publications contribute the most to the total scientific production of Peru.

Evidence and consequences of academic drift in the field of dental research: A bibliometric analysis 2000-2015

The mission of academic excellence has resulted in a science system that incentivises publications within high impact, often basic science journals, and less in application-oriented journals. For the dental research field this so-called academic drift can result in a research portfolio that moves away from research that serves dental healthcare. Therefore, we examined if and how academic drift has changed the dental research field. Web of Science data were used to develop a network map for dental research containing journal clusters that show similar citation behavior. From the year 2000 up to 2015, we explored the intensity of knowledge exchange between the different clusters through citation relations. Next, we analyzed changes in research focus of dental research institutes in seven countries, in dental research, clinical medicine research, basic science, public health research and other fields. Within the citation network, 85.5% of all references in dental journals concern references to other dental journals. The knowledge contribution of non-dental research fields to dental research was limited during the studied period. At the same time, the share of output of dental research institutes in dental research has declined. The research activity of the dental research institutes increased mainly in basic science while the knowledge input from basic science into dental research did not increase. Our findings suggest that the dental research portfolio is influenced by academic drift. This academic drift has increased the disbalance towards basic science, and presents a challenge for the scientific progress in dental healthcare services.

Research Relating to Low Back Pain and Physical Activity Reported Over the Period of 2000-2020

Background

Low back pain (LBP) is a highly prevalent musculoskeletal disorder that contributes to the greatest degree of disability worldwide. It has become a very serious public health problem that has attracted considerable research interest. The number of publications associated with LBP and physical activity (PA) is gradually increasing. Nevertheless, few studies have utilised visualisation in analysing the general aspects of this field. Therefore, we aimed to provide a systematic overview of global scientific research related to low back pain and physical activity from 2000 to 2020. It has significant benefits in terms of providing researchers with the status and trends of research on low back pain and physical activity.

Methods

Publications on Science Citation Index-Expanded of Web of Science from 2000 to 2020 were searched, and publications relevant to LBP and PA were analysed using Citespace and SPSS. Analyses mainly included cooperation amongst authors, countries and institutions; co-occurrence analysis of keywords; and co-citation analysis of references, revealing productive researchers and contributing institutions tracking the status and trend of research fields.

Results

Results of linear regression analysis showed that the number of publications on LBP and PA studies increased significantly (p<0.001). The subject categories predominantly focused on orthopaedics (2579, 26.54%), rehabilitation (2544, 26.18%) and sport sciences (2015, 25.44%). The United States had the highest number of published papers (2700, 27.789%) and citations (86, 958). In terms of the number of publications, amongst the top 20 journals, Spine contributed the most, whilst the British Journal of Sports Medicine had the highest impact factor (IF₂₀₁₉, 12.022). The University of Sydney had the highest number of publications (330 publications). Maher published the most papers (123 papers) and had the highest H-index (41). Several citation articles and keywords (such as aerobic, obesity and fear-avoidance beliefs) can be used to provide frontier clues for research on LBP and PA.

Conclusion

The results of our study may provide information, such as research trends and frontiers of research and collaborating partners, institutions and countries, on LBP and PA.

Level of Evidence of Dental Research in Saudi Arabia (2000-2020)

Objectives

The level of evidence (LOE) of Saudi dental research from 2000 to 2020 was evaluated, and factors associated with the LOE were determined.

Methods

This study was a systematic review. PubMed, Web of Science, and Medline databases were utilized to retrieve available dental articles published in English between January 2000 and May 2020. The inclusion criteria consisted of clinical studies conducted in Saudi Arabia with at least one Saudi dental affiliation. The retrieved eligible articles were evaluated independently by two reviewers using a modified Oxford LOE scale. The LOE of the studies was compared between the last two decades.

Results

Of the 7237 articles identified, 1557 articles met the inclusion criteria. Approximately 78% of the published articles reported Level IV evidence. A higher trend toward Level I, II, and III publications has occurred in recent years (i.e., 2010-2020). However, no statistically significant difference existed in LOE proportions between the two decades. The presence of international collaboration and high journals' impact factor was significantly associated with a higher LOE.

Conclusion

Most published dental research studies were low LOE studies (i.e., Level IV). National and international collaboration is highly encouraged as this is a factor, according to our findings, that would be a positive addition toward publishing dental research of a higher LOE in Saudi Arabia.

A bibliometric analysis of top 100 most-cited articles in dentistry with author(s) affiliated with Taiwan institutes

BACKGROUND

Citation analysis can provide a historical perspective in the advancement of research, evolution, and areas of research. Taiwan exhibits rigorous academic and scientific activities in dentistry; however, based on its empirical contribution in research, there is no report in the literature analyzing the top-cited articles published by authors affiliated with Taiwan institutes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the citation characteristics of the top 100 most-cited articles published in dentistry with author(s) affiliated with Taiwan institutes.

METHODS

The Scopus database was used to search the qualified articles with authors from Taiwan published in journals. The bibliometric parameters, including year of publication, study design, research fields, citation half-life, self-citation, institute of origin, and international collaboration were analyzed. Multivariable linear regression in generalized linear model was used to find associate factors related to trends of citation counts.

RESULTS

The top 100 most-cited articles were determined by analyzing 7667 articles from the Scopus database. The steadily increasing trends were observed in the number and percentage of articles of author(s) affiliated with Taiwan institutes to the world. The most common study design was the in vitro research (55 %). The majority citation half-life is 3-5 and 6-8 years, and self-citation counts were between one to five times (n = 26). The percentage of international collaboration of these most-cited articles was 32%, and the main collaboration country was the United States. By using multivariable linear regression in the generalized linear model, the associated factors, study design, and self-citation were significantly associated with the escalating trends of citation counts.

CONCLUSION

This is the first study that provides valuable information in the dentistry regarding the academic activity, and empirical contribution of author(s) affiliated with Taiwan institutes in the world. The trends of citation characteristics were significantly correlated with study design and self-citation of these articles.

Investigating Research Hotspots and Publication Trends of Spinal Stenosis: A Bibliometric Analysis During 2000-2018

Spinal stenosis is a common disease affecting the elderly that is present in a various forms. Its high incidence forces researchers to pay more attention and offer countermeasures. We used the Web of Science Core collection and PubMed database to obtain 5,606 scientific studies concerning spinal stenosis, and the number of publications maintained a roughly increasing trend from 108 in 2000 to 512 in 2018, only declining in 2011. Bibliometric analysis was conducted using the online analysis software CiteSpace and Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB). The United States maintains academic leadership in this field. The journal SPINE was the most authoritative, with 695 articles and an average of 12.73 citations. The exported major MeSH terms were further biclustered with gCLUTO according to co-word analysis to reveal research hotspots, including etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, conservative treatment, operative indication, internal implantation, and postoperative complications. After combination, the main topics focused on pathogenesis and surgical treatment. Narrowing causes flavum ligamentum hypertrophy, and posterior longitudinal ligament ossification is widely accepted. Additionally, minimally invasive surgery and internal implantation fixation are more valid in the clinic. Refining pathological classification and optimizing surgical methods and instrument properties will be important future research directions for spinal stenosis.

Sustainable Construction Investment, Real Estate Development, and COVID-19: A Review of Literature in the Field

Aspects of sustainable construction investment and real estate development (CIRED) and their interrelations during the period pre-, intra-, and post-COVID-19, are presented in the research. Applications of the topic model, environmental psychology theory, building life cycle method, and certain elements of bibliometrics, webometrics, article level metrics, altmetrics, and scientometrics make it possible to perform a quantitative analysis on CIRED. The CIRED topic model was developed in seven steps. This paper aims to present a literature review on CIRED throughout the pandemic and to look at the responses from the real estate and construction sector. This sector is a field that appears to be rapidly expanding, judging from the volume of current research papers. This review focuses on last year’s leading peer-reviewed journals. A combination of various keywords was applied for the review and the criteria for paper selections included construction investment, real estate development, civil engineering, COVID-19, and sustainability, as well as residential, industrial, commercial, land, and special purpose real estate, along with their risks, strategies, and trends. The articles reviewed for this paper, which analyzes three hypotheses, look at pre-, intra-, and post-pandemic CIRED. The three hypotheses were validated by analyzing scientific publications from around the world. Two innovative elements make this study stand out among the most advanced research on pre-, intra-, and post-pandemic CIRED. The first of the two innovations is the integrated analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic, COVID-19-related national policies, and business investment strategies relevant to CIRED and the interests of investors as well as on the impact a CIRED policy and investors make on the spread of COVID-19. In addition, this research demonstrates a marked increase in the effectiveness of a CIRED analysis, when the life cycle of a CIRED, the involved stakeholders with their own individual interests, the COVID-19 situation, and the external micro-, meso-, and macro-environments are covered comprehensively as a single entity.

Bibliometric analysis of the scientific production of literature on peri-implant diseases in the Web of Science

BACKGROUND

The exponential increase in implant placement worldwide and the high prevalence of its associated pathologies have prompted an increasing contribution by the scientific community to the number of publications related to peri-implant pathologies.

PURPOSE

The objective of this work is to carry out a bibliometric analysis of scientific production on peri-implant diseases.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The search strategy included titles, keywords, and abstracts based on the term peri-implantitis and all the possible combinations existing in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) of the main collection of Web of Science. Two limits were established: the document typology was limited to Article and Review, and articles published up to 2019 were selected. All articles were refined and standardized manually to avoid typographical errors and duplications in authors' names or institutions.

RESULTS

The total number of papers collected was 2547. A significant increase was observed in the number of articles published, especially in the past 10 years. The three most productive authors were Europeans, and the 45 most productive institutions were the universities. The most productive funding entities were the governments. Of the published works, 42.28% were funded. Of the 2547 records, 86.53% presented keywords.

CONCLUSIONS

Scientific literature on peri-implantitis shows scientific growth in recent years, with a growing trend towards collaboration between authors and institutions. Most of the works have been published in high-impact journals, and in the last 2 years, more than half of the works have received some type of public or private funding.

An overview of the 35 years of research in the oral radiology: a bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to provide a bibliometric overview of the oral radiology journal output, contents, and leading trends, and also include a detailed authorship analysis by evaluating the top contributors, and their geographic distributions between 1985 and 2020 years.

METHODS

The databases available on the Scopus and journal's Web Page were searched to identify the all published articles and reports with no restriction regarding publication year or study design. Seven hundred and seventy-seven articles were included and analyzed for the following bibliometric criteria: publication title, authorship, publication year, coauthors, institution of origin, country of origin, collaborating institution and countries, article category, study field, and number of citations based on the Scopus and Google Scholar.

RESULTS

Original article is by far the largest group of study outcome that more than half of the articles were in this category and followed by the case reports (19.8%). The leading countries according to number of the articles were Japan by far (59.8%) followed by Turkey (10.8%) and South Korea (5.2%). The article by Arnheiter, Scarfe, and Farman has received the highest number of citations overall. As first and/or coauthor, Ariji E emerged as a most productive author with 35 publications and Osaka University was determined as the most prominent institutions by publishing the greatest number of articles. More than half of the articles were in the "Diagnosis of Orofacial Diseases" study field.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overall picture of the 35 years of research progress and publication trends in oral radiology.

A bibliometric study of the top cited papers related to periodontal regeneration

This report identifies the top cited papers in the field of periodontal regeneration since inception of the concept. Using the H-classics approach, 132 papers published between 1970 and 2012 were identified, with 230.0 ± 175.6 (mean ± SD) citations and 10.4 ± 11.5 citations/year. There were 46 clinical reports, 28 animal studies, 23 in vitro studies, 30 reviews, 3 systematic reviews, and 2 combined animal and in vitro studies. Analysis of covariance showed that institution number (≥3, P = 0.011), journal impact factor at publication (>3.0, P = 0.001) and study type (in vitro/reviews vs. clinical trials/animal studies, P = 0.024) were significantly associated with citations/year. This study has characterized the most influential literature in the field of periodontal regeneration and serves as a quick reference resource.

Research Trends in Career Success: A Bibliometric Review

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of academic research on professional success, using the bibliometric analysis to understand the evolution of this field between the years 1990 and 2020. The information was obtained from the publications indexed in the Scopus database, under a rigorous bibliometric process that comprises five parts: (i) criteria search of the field, (ii) selection of database and documents, (iii) inclusion and selection criteria, (iv) software and data selection, and (v) analysis and results. The results show professional success as a scientific discipline in full exponential growth, which allows us to consider the main contributions of authors, institutions, and international contributions, as well as to consider the main themes that have shaped the intellectual structure of the subject through their visualization using bibliometric maps of co-citation and co-occurrence, which combined showed eight main lines of research. The results obtained allowed us to identify patterns of convergence and divergence in various topics, which allows obtaining current and diverse information on the state of the research field’s art.

The Top 100 Most Cited Articles Published in Dentistry: 2020 Update

This bibliometric review is aimed to analyze the top 100 most-cited publications in dentistry and to compare its outcomes. A literature search was performed using Elsevier's Scopus, without any restriction of language, publication year, or study design. Of 336,381 articles, the top 100 were included based on their citation count, which ranged from 638 to 4728 citations (Feijoo et al., 326 to 2050). The most productive decade was the 2000s, with 40 articles on the list (Feijoo et al., 1980s: 26). Marx RE (7%) was the major contributor in this study (Feijoo et al., Socransky SS: 9%), and almost half (48%) of articles were from the USA. Of the top 100 articles, 26% focused on periodontology (Feijoo et al., periodontology: 43%), while 17% of the total were published in the Journal of Dental Research (Feijoo et al., Journal of Clinical Periodontology: 20%). Most of the publications were narrative reviews/expert opinion (36%), (Feijoo et al., case series: 22%), and were within the evidence level V (64%) (Feijoo et al., 54%). The citation count that a paper secures is not necessarily a reflection of research's quality, however, the current analysis provides the latest citation trends in dentistry.

A bibliometric analysis of periodontology

This bibliometric study assessed periodontal/implant articles that were part of the five most-cited dental articles in each of the years 2005-2019. Periodontal/implant articles made up one to four articles in each of 14 years and totaled 40% of the yearly five most-cited dental articles. The three core periodontal journals (Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Journal of Periodontology, and Periodontology 2000) increased ~50%-100% in Journal Impact Factor from 2005 to 2015 and were among the 10 most-cited dental journals in the 2015-2019 period. The Journal of Clinical Periodontology and Periodontology 2000 were in several years assigned the highest Journal Impact Factor in dentistry. In summary, periodontal journals continue to publish high-impact articles that are relevant for both oral health care and medicine.

Global Dental Publications in PubMed Databases between 2009 and 2019-A Bibliometric Analysis

The objective of this study was to evaluate the publications in the field of dentistry on the PubMed database over a span of 10 years, from 2009 to 2019. Articles published between January 2009 to December 2019 were searched for in the MEDLINE database via PubMed. Data analysis was done using R-base packages, including the specialized R-packages Bibliometrix and String. For descriptive statistics and sequence charting, SPSS version 23.0 was used. A total of 104,975 articles were extracted, with a total of 153,530 authors in the given time frame. The proportion of articles steadily increased from 2009, plateauing at its peak from 2010 to 2016, and then seeing a decline from 2017 to 2019. Journal articles (60.58%), comparative studies (16.05%) and case reports (10.8%) were recorded as the most reported type of publication globally, accounting for 81.43% of the total documents extracted. All the articles came from 81 countries, with the USA reporting the greatest number of published articles (45,911). Dentistry proves to be a multi-faceted arena and many researchers and authors around the globe are contributing to the burgeoning literature over time.

A Bibliometric Diagnosis and Analysis about Smart Cities

This article aims to present a bibliometric analysis of Smart Cities. The study analyzes the most important journals during the period between 1991 and 2019. It provides helpful insights into the document types, the distribution of countries/territories, the distribution of institutions, the authors’ geographical distribution, the most active authors and their research interests or fields, the relationships between principal authors and more relevant publications, and the most cited articles. This paper also provides important information about the core and historical references and the most cited papers. The analysis used the keywords and thematic noun-phrases in the titles and abstracts of the sample papers to explore the hot research topics in the top journals (e.g., ‘Smart Cities’, ‘Intelligent Cities’, ‘Sustainable Cities’, ‘e-Government’, ‘Digital Transformation’, ‘Knowledge-Based City’, etc.). The main objective is to have a quantitative description of the published literature about Smart Cities; this description will be the basis for the development of a methodology for the diagnosis of the maturity of a Smart City. The results presented here help to define the scientific concept of Smart Cities and to measure the importance that the term has gained through the years. The study has allowed us to know the main indicators of the published literature in depth, from the date of publication of the first articles and the evolution of these indicators to the present day. From the main indicators in the literature, some were selected to be applied: The most influential journals on Smart Cities according to the general citation structure in Smart Cities, Global Impact Factor of Smart Cities, number of publications, publications on Smart Cities around the world, and their correlation.

Scientific Production in Dentistry: The National Panorama through a Bibliometric Study of Italian Academies

Background

The academic scientific research in the field of dentistry has rapidly increased in the last 20 years under the pressure of the multidisciplinary technological advancements and the growing demand for new predictable and cost-effective techniques and materials. The aim of the present investigation was to analyze the academic scientific production conducted by Italian Academies and Dental Schools.

Methods

The list of MED/28 academic researchers, associate and full professors, and academic affiliations was collected from the national database of CINECA to evaluate the scientific output of the Italian Universities. The complete list of scientific contributions and the bibliometric parameters were recorded in the Scopus database.

Results

The scientific production of 37 Italian Universities, 416 researchers, and 23689 papers was evaluated. The measurement of total academic papers, citations, h-index, and relative citation ratio (RCR) was calculated. The study data showed an increase of the academic scientific production over the last 5 years.

Conclusions

The results presented show how scientific research is increasingly pursued by dental clinicians.

Citation Classics in the Journal of Endodontics and a Comparative Bibliometric Analysis with the Most Downloaded Articles in 2017 and 2018

INTRODUCTION

Bibliometric analysis is the quantitative measure of the impact of a scientific article in its respective field of research. The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the main features of the top 50 most cited articles published in the Journal of Endodontics since its inception as well as the top 50 most downloaded articles in 2017 and 2018 in order to evaluate the changing trends and other bibliometric parameters of the contemporary literature compared with the classic literature.

METHODS

An electronic search was conducted on the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science "All Databases" to identify and analyze the top 50 most frequently cited scientific articles. After ranking the articles in a descending order based on their citation counts, each article was then crossmatched with the citation counts in Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed.

RESULTS

The citation counts of the 50 selected most cited articles ranged between 218 and 731 (Clarivate Analytics Web of Science). The years in which most top 50 articles were published were 2004 and 2008 (n = 5). Among 131 authors, the greatest contribution was made by M. Torabinejad (n = 14). Most of the articles originated from the United States (n = 38) with the greatest contributions from the School of Dentistry, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, CA (n = 15). Basic research-technology was the most frequent study design (n = 18). A negative, significant correlation occurred between citation density and publication age (correlation coefficient = -0.708, P < .01).

CONCLUSIONS

Several interesting differences were found between the main characteristics of the most cited articles and the most downloaded articles.

Antibiotics: A Bibliometric Analysis of Top 100 Classics

Citation frequencies represent the most significant contributions in any respective field. This bibliometric analysis aimed to identify and analyze the 100 most-cited publications in the field of antibiotics and to highlight the trends of research in this field. “All databases” of Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science was used to identify and analyze the 100 publications. The articles were then cross-matched with Scopus and Google Scholar. The frequency of citation ranged from 940 to 11,051 for the Web of Science, 1053 to 10,740 for Scopus, and 1162 to 20,041 for Google Scholar. A total of 513 authors made contributions to the ranked list, and Robert E.W. Hancock contributed in six articles, which made it to the ranked list. Sixty-six scientific contributions originated from the United States of America. Five publications were linked to the University of Manitoba, Canada, that was identified as the educational organization, made the most contributions (n = 5). According to the methodological design, 26 of the most cited works were review-type closely followed by 23 expert opinions/perspectives. Eight articles were published in Nature journal, making it the journal with the most scientific contribution in this field. Correlation analysis between the publication age and citation frequency was found statistically significant (p = 0.012).
