Experimental research in environmentally induced hyperthermic older persons: A systematic quantitative literature review mapping the available evidence

The heat-related health burden is expected to persist and worsen in the coming years due to an aging global population and climate change. Defining the breadth and depth of our understanding of age-related changes in thermoregulation can identify underlying causes and strategies to protect vulnerable individuals from heat. We conducted the first systematic quantitative literature review to provide context to the historical experimental research of healthy older adults - compared to younger adults or unhealthy age matched cases - during exogenous heat strain, focusing on factors that influence thermoregulatory function (e.g. co-morbidities). We identified 4,455 articles, with 147 meeting eligibility criteria. Most studies were conducted in the US (39%), Canada (29%), or Japan (12%), with 71% of the 3,411 participants being male. About 71% of the studies compared younger and older adults, while 34% compared two groups of older adults with and without factors influencing thermoregulation. Key factors included age combined with another factor (23%), underlying biological mechanisms (18%), age independently (15%), influencing health conditions (15%), adaptation potential (12%), environmental conditions (9%), and therapeutic/pharmacological interventions (7%). Our results suggest that controlled experimental research should focus on the age-related changes in thermoregulation in the very old, females, those with overlooked chronic heat-sensitive health conditions (e.g. pulmonary, renal, mental disorders), the impact of multimorbidity, prolonged and cumulative effects of extreme heat, evidence-based policy of control measures (e.g. personal cooling strategies), pharmaceutical interactions, and interventions stimulating protective physiological adaptation. These controlled studies will inform the directions and use of limited resources in ecologically valid fieldwork studies.

Transdermal iontophoretic application of l-NAME is available in sweating research induced by heat stress in young healthy adults

Iontophoretic transdermal administration of NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride [l-NAME, a nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor] has been used as a non-invasive evaluation of NOS-dependent mechanisms in human skin. However, the availability has yet to be investigated in sweating research. Prior observations using invasive techniques (e.g., intradermal microdialysis technique) to administer l-NAME have implicated that NOS reduces sweating induced by heat stress but rarely influences the response induced by the administration of cholinergic muscarinic receptor agonists. Therefore, we investigated whether the transdermal iontophoretic administration of l-NAME modulates sweating similar to those prior observations. Twenty young healthy adults (10 males, 10 females) participated in two experimental protocols on separate days. Before each protocol, saline (control) and 1% l-NAME were bilaterally administered to the forearm skin via transdermal iontophoresis. In protocol 1, 0.001% and 1% pilocarpine were iontophoretically administered at l-NAME-treated and untreated sites. In protocol 2, passive heating was applied by immersing the lower limbs in hot water (43 °C) until the rectal temperature increased by 0.8 °C above baseline. The sweat rate was continuously measured throughout both protocols. Pilocarpine-induced sweat rate was not significantly different between the control and l-NAME-treated sites in both pilocarpine concentrations (P ≥ 0.316 for the treatment effect and interaction of treatment and pilocarpine concentration). The sweat rate during passive heating was attenuated at the l-NAME-treated site relative to the control (treatment effect, P = 0.020). Notably, these observations are consistent with prior sweating studies administrating l-NAME into human skin using intradermal microdialysis techniques. Based on the similarity of our results with already known observations, we conclude that transdermal iontophoresis of l-NAME is a valid non-invasive technique for the investigation of the mechanisms of sweating related to NOS during heat stress.

Human temperature regulation under heat stress in health, disease, and injury

The human body constantly exchanges heat with the environment. Temperature regulation is a homeostatic feedback control system that ensures deep body temperature is maintained within narrow limits despite wide variations in environmental conditions and activity-related elevations in metabolic heat production. Extensive research has been performed to study the physiological regulation of deep body temperature. This review focuses on healthy and disordered human temperature regulation during heat stress. Central to this discussion is the notion that various morphological features, intrinsic factors, diseases, and injuries independently and interactively influence deep body temperature during exercise and/or exposure to hot ambient temperatures. The first sections review fundamental aspects of the human heat stress response, including the biophysical principles governing heat balance and the autonomic control of heat loss thermoeffectors. Next, we discuss the effects of different intrinsic factors (morphology, heat adaptation, biological sex, and age), diseases (neurological, cardiovascular, metabolic, and genetic), and injuries (spinal cord injury, deep burns, and heat stroke), with emphasis on the mechanisms by which these factors enhance or disturb the regulation of deep body temperature during heat stress. We conclude with key unanswered questions in this field of research.

The effect of acute intradermal administration of ascorbate on heat loss responses in older adults with uncomplicated controlled hypertension

ABSTRACT

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) contributes to the heat loss responses of cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating during exercise. However, the contribution of NOS may be attenuated in individuals with uncomplicated, controlled hypertension due to elevated oxidative stress, which can reduce NO bioavailability. We evaluated the hypothesis that the acute local intradermal administration of the antioxidant ascorbate would enhance cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating via NOS-dependent mechanisms during an exercise-heat stress in adults with hypertension. Habitually active adults who were normotensive (n = 14, 7 females, 62 ± 4 years) or had uncomplicated, controlled hypertension (n = 13, 6 females, 62 ± 5 years) performed 30-min of moderate-intensity (50% of their pre-determine peak oxygen uptake) semi-recumbent cycling in the heat (35°C, 20% relative humidity). Cutaneous vascular conductance and sweat rate were assessed at four forearm skin sites continuously perfused with either: 1) lactated Ringer (Control), 2) 10 mM antioxidant ascorbate, 3) 10 mM L-NAME, a non-selective NOS inhibitor, or 4) a combination of ascorbate and L-NAME. Relative to Control, no effect of ascorbate was observed on cutaneous vascular conductance or sweating in either group (P = 0.619). However, L-NAME reduced cutaneous vascular conductance relative to Control in both groups (P ≤ 0.038). No effect of any treatment on sweating was observed (P ≥ 0.306). Thus, acute local administration of ascorbate to forearm skin does not enhance the activation of heat loss responses of cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in older adults, and those with hypertension during an exercise-heat stress (236/250 words) This article is protected by copyright. Revisiting regional variation in the age-related reduction in sweat rate during passive heat stress

Aging is associated with attenuated sweat gland function, which has been suggested to occur in a peripheral-to-central manner. However, evidence supporting this hypothesis remains equivocal. We revisited this hypothesis by evaluating the sweat rate across the limbs and trunk in young and older men during whole-body, passive heating. A water-perfused suit was used to raise and clamp esophageal temperature at 0.6°C (low-heat strain) and 1.2°C (moderate-heat strain) above baseline in 14 young (24 (SD 5) years) and 15 older (69 (4) years) men. Sweat rate was measured at multiple sites on the trunk (chest, abdomen) and limbs (biceps, forearm, quadriceps, calf) using ventilated capsules (3.8 cm² ). Sweat rates, expressed as the average of 5 min of stable sweating at low- and moderate-heat strain, were compared between groups (young, older) and regions (trunk, limbs) within each level of heat strain using a linear mixed-effects model with nested intercepts (sites nested within region nested within participant). At low-heat strain, the age-related reduction in sweat rate (older-young values) was greater at the trunk (0.65 mg/cm² /min [95% CI 0.44, 0.86]) compared to the limbs (0.42 mg/cm² /min [0.22, 0.62]; interaction: p = 0.010). At moderate-heat strain, sweat rate was lower in older compared to young (main effect: p = 0.025), albeit that reduction did not differ between regions (interaction: p = 0.888). We conclude that, contrary to previous suggestions, the age-related decline in sweat rate was greater at the trunk compared to the limbs at low-heat strain, with no evidence of regional variation in that age-related decline at moderate-heat strain.

Ageing augments β-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation differently in men and women, with no effect on β-adrenergic sweating

In this study, we assessed whether age-related differences in β-adrenergic regulation of these responses exist and whether they differ between men and women. Ageing had no effect on β-adrenergic sweating in men or women. Our findings advance our understanding of age-related changes in the regulation of cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating and provide new directions for research on the significance of enhanced β-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation in older adults.

ABSTRACT

β-Adrenergic receptor agonists, such as isoprenaline, can induce cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in young adults. Given that cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating responses to whole-body heating and to pharmacological agonists, such as acetylcholine, ATP and nicotine, can differ in older adults, we assessed whether ageing also modulates β-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating and whether responses differ between men and women. In the context of the latter, prior reports showed that the effects of ageing on cutaneous vasodilatation (evoked with ATP and nicotine) and sweating (stimulated by acetylcholine) were sex dependent. Thus, in the present study, we assessed the role of β-adrenergic receptor activation on forearm cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in 11 young men (24 ± 4 years of age), 11 young women (23 ± 5 years of age), 11 older men (61 ± 8 years of age) and 11 older women (60 ± 8 years of age). Initially, a high dose (100 µm) of isoprenaline was administered via intradermal microdialysis for 5 min to induce maximal β-adrenergic sweating. Approximately 60 min after the washout period, three incremental doses of isoprenaline were administered (1, 10 and 100 µm, each for 25 min) to assess dose-dependent cutaneous vasodilatation. Isoprenaline-mediated cutaneous vasodilatation was greater in both older men and older women relative to their young counterparts. Augmented cutaneous vasodilatory responses were observed at 1 and 10 µm in women and at 100 µm in men. Isoprenaline-mediated sweating was unaffected by ageing, regardless of sex. We show that ageing augments β-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation differently in men and women, without influencing β-adrenergic sweating.

Dietary nitrate supplementation does not influence thermoregulatory or cardiovascular strain in older individuals during severe ambient heat stress

What is the main finding and its importance? A 7-day nitrate supplementation regimen lowered resting mean arterial pressure in thermoneutral conditions. During heat stress, core and mean skin temperatures, vasodilatory responses, sweat loss, heart rate and left ventricular function were unchanged, and mean arterial pressure was only transiently reduced, post-supplementation. These data suggest nitrate supplementation with beetroot juice does not mitigate thermoregulatory or cardiovascular strain in heat-stressed older individuals.

ABSTRACT

This study tested the hypothesis that dietary nitrate supplementation with concentrated beetroot juice attenuates thermoregulatory and cardiovascular strain in older individuals during environmental heat stress. Nine healthy older individuals (six females, three males; aged 67 ± 5 years) were exposed to 42.5 ± 0.1°C and 34.0 ± 0.5% relative humidity conditions for 120 min before (CON) and after 7 days of dietary nitrate supplementation with concentrated beetroot juice (BRJ; 280 ml, ∼16.8 mmol of nitrate daily). Core and skin temperatures, body mass changes (indicative of whole-body sweat loss), skin blood flow and cutaneous vascular conductance, forearm blood flow and vascular conductance, heart rate, arterial blood pressures and indices of cardiac function were measured. The 7-day beetroot juice regimen increased plasma nitrate/nitrite levels from 27.4 ± 15.2 to 477.0 ± 102.5 μmol l^-1 (P < 0.01) and lowered resting mean arterial pressure from 90 ± 7 to 83 ± 10 mmHg at baseline under thermoneutral conditions (P = 0.02). However, during subsequent heat stress, no differences in core and skin temperatures, skin blood flow and vascular conductance, forearm blood flow and vascular conductance, whole-body sweat loss, heart rate, and echocardiographic indices of systolic function and diastolic filling were evident following nitrate supplementation (all P > 0.05). Mean arterial pressure was lower in BRJ vs. CON during heat stress (treatment-by-time interaction: P = 0.02). Overall, these findings suggest that dietary nitrate supplementation with concentrated beetroot juice does not attenuate thermoregulatory or cardiovascular strain in older individuals exposed to severe ambient heat stress.

Role of nitric oxide synthase in human sweat gland output

The mechanism by which nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition impacts human sweating is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that the activation of NOS and release on nitric oxide acts to open K⁺ channels and enhance sweat gland output. Local sweat rate (LSR) was measured with a small sweat capsule mounted on the skin while sweating was initiated by intradermal electrical stimulation. Sigmoid shape stimulus-response curves were generated by plotting the area under the LSR-time curve (LSR AUC) versus log₁₀ stimulus frequency and normalized to the peak AUC response during control trials. NOS inhibition alone reduced the peak sweat rate response to 81.5 ± 4.5% peak LSR AUC of that seen with lactated Ringer's (P = 0.0004). Fifty mM of tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA) alone reduced peak LSR (0.317 ± 0.060 vs. 0.511 ± 0.104 mg·min^-1·cm^-2, P = 0.03) and the peak LSR AUC response from 0.193 ± 0.170 to 0.158 ± 0.127 mg·cm^-2 (P = 0.004). Delivery of a 20 mM nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME) following 50 mM TEA produced a further decrease in the peak LSR AUC response to 0.095 ± 0.064 mg·cm^-2 (≈20% reduction, P = 0.0145). These data support the hypothesis that sudomotor control of sweat gland activity is locally modulated by a functioning NOS system that appears to be additive and independent to the effect of blockade of K⁺ channels with TEA.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The contribution of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) to the process of cholinergic-mediated human eccrine sweat production is unclear. Using a novel model for cholinergic-mediated sweating in humans, I demonstrate that blocking the NOS system led to a reduction in local sweat rate (LSR). This reduction in LSR was maintained in the presence of K⁺ channel blockade with tetraethylammonium.

Impairments to Thermoregulation in the Elderly During Heat Exposure Events

Heat waves represent a public health risk to elderly people, and typically result in an increased rate of hospital admissions and deaths. Studies of thermoregulation in this cohort have generally focused on single elements such as sweating capacity. Sweating capacity and skin blood flow reduce with age, reducing ability to dissipate heat. Perception of effort during heat exposure is emerging as an area that needs further investigation as the elderly appear to lack the ability to adequately perceive increased physiological strain during heat exposure. The role of the gut and endotoxemia in heat stress has received attention in young adults, while the elderly population has been neglected. This shortcoming offers another potential avenue for identifying effective integrated health interventions to reduce heat illnesses. Increasing numbers of elderly individuals in populations worldwide are likely to increase the incidence of heat wave-induced deaths if adequate interventions are not developed, evaluated, and implemented. In this narrative-style review we identify and discuss health-related interventions for reducing the impact of heat illnesses in the elderly.

Regional influence of nitric oxide on cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating during exercise-heat stress in young men

ABSTRACT

While it is established that nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is an important modulator of forearm cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating during an exercise-heat stress in young men, it remains unclear if regional differences exist in this response. In 15 habitually active young men (24 ± 4 (SD) years), cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and local sweat rate (LSR) were assessed at three body regions. On each of the dorsal forearm, chest and upper-back (trapezius), sites were continuously perfused with either (1) lactated Ringer solution (control) or (2) 10 Mm N^ω -nitro-l-arginine (l-NNA, NOS inhibitor), via microdialysis. Participants rested in the heat (35°C) for ∼75 min, followed by 60 min of semi-recumbent cycling performed at a fixed rate of heat production of 200 W m^-2 (equivalent to ∼42% V ̇ O 2 peak ). During exercise, the chest and upper-back regions showed higher CVC and LSR responses relative to the forearm (all P < 0.05). Within each region, l-NNA attenuated CVC and LSR relative to control (all P < 0.05). However, the NOS contribution was not different across regions for the rate of change and plateau for CVC or for the LSR plateau (all P > 0.05). Conversely, there was a greater NOS contribution to the rate of change for LSR at the chest relative to the forearm (P < 0.05) with a similar trend for the back. In habitually active young men, NOS-dependent cutaneous vasodilatation was similar across regions while the NOS contribution to LSR was greater on the chest relative to the forearm. These findings advance our understanding of the mechanisms influencing regional variations in cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating during an exercise-heat stress.

No thermoregulatory or ergogenic effect of dietary nitrate among physically inactive males, exercising above gas exchange threshold in hot and dry conditions

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of five days dietary nitrate (NO₃^-) consumption on exercise tolerance and thermoregulation during cycling in hot, dry conditions. In a double-blind, randomised crossover design, 11 healthy males participated in an exercise tolerance test (T_lim) in the heat (35°C, 28% relative humidity), cycling above the thermoneutral gas exchange threshold, after five days of dietary supplementation, with either NO₃^-rich beetroot juice (BR; ∼ 9.2 mmol NO₃^-) or placebo (PLA). Changes in plasma [NO₃^-] and nitrite [NO₂^-], core and mean skin temperatures, mean local and whole-body sweat rates, heart rate, perceptual ratings and pulmonary gas exchange were measured during exercise, alongside calorimetric estimations of thermal balance. Mean arterial pressures (MAP) were recorded pre-T_lim. There were no differences in T_lim between conditions (BR = 22.8 ± 8.1 min; Placebo = 20.7 ± 7.9 min) (P = 0.184), despite increases in plasma [NO₃^-] and [NO₂^-] (P < 0.001) and a 3.8% reduction in resting MAP (P = 0.004) in the BR condition. There were no other differences in thermoregulatory, cardio-metabolic, perceptual or calorimetric responses to the T_lim between conditions (P > 0.05). Dietary NO₃^- supplementation had no effect on exercise tolerance or thermoregulation in hot, dry conditions, despite reductions in resting MAP and increases in plasma [NO₃^-] and [NO₂^-]. Healthy, yet physically inactive individuals with no known impairments in vasodilatory and sudomotor function do not appear to require BR for ergogenic or thermolytic effects during exercise in the heat.

Thermoregulation in the Aging Population and Practical Strategies to Overcome a Warmer Tomorrow

As global temperatures continue to rise, improving thermal tolerance in the aged population is crucial to counteract age-associated impairments in thermoregulatory function. Impairments in reflex cutaneous vasodilation and sweating response can augment the vulnerability of older adults to heat-related injuries following exposure to heat stress. Mechanisms underlying a compromised cutaneous vasodilation are suggested to include reduced sympathetic neural drive, diminished cholinergic co-transmitter contribution, and altered second messenger signaling events. On the other hand, impairments in sweating response are ascribed to reduced sweat gland cholinergic sensitivity and altered cyclooxygenase and nitric oxide signaling. Several practical mitigation strategies such as exercise, passive heating, and behavioral adaptations are proposed as means to overcome heat stress and improve thermal tolerance in the aged. Aerobic exercise training is shown to be amongst the most effective ways to enhance thermoregulatory function. However, in elderly with limited exercise capability due to chronic diseases and mobility issues, passive heating can serve as a functional alternative as it has been shown to confer similar benefits to that of exercise training. Supplementary to exercise training and passive heating, behavioral adaptations can be applied to further enhance the heat-preparedness of the aged.

Contribution of nitric oxide synthase to cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in men of black-African and Caucasian descent during exercise in the heat

ABSTRACT

Men of black-African descent are at an increased risk of heat-related illness relative to their Caucasian counterparts. This might be attributable, in part, to reduced cutaneous nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability in this population, which might alter local cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating. To evaluate this, we compared these heat-loss responses in young men (18-30 years of age) of black-African (n = 10) and Caucasian (n = 10) descent during rest, exercise and recovery in the heat. Participants were matched for physical characteristics and fitness, and they were all born and raised in the same temperate environment (i.e. Canada; second generation and higher). Both groups rested for 10 min and then performed 50 min of moderate-intensity exercise at 200 W m^-2 , followed by 30 min of recovery in hot, dry heat (35°C, 20% relative humidity). Local cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC_%max ) and sweat rate (SR) were measured at two forearm skin sites treated with either lactated Ringer solution (control) or 10 mm N^G -nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME, a nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor). l-NAME significantly reduced CVC_%max throughout rest, exercise and recovery in both groups (both P < 0.001). However, there were no significant main effects for the contribution of NO to CVC_%max between groups (all P > 0.500). l-NAME significantly reduced local SR in both groups (both P < 0.050). The contribution of NO to SR was similar between groups such that l-NAME reduced SR relative to control at 40 and 50 min into exercise (both P < 0.05). We demonstrate that ethnicity per se does not influence NO-dependent cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in healthy young men of black-African and Caucasian descent during exercise in dry heat.

Exogenous Activation of Protease-Activated Receptor 2 Attenuates Cutaneous Vasodilatation and Sweating in Older Men Exercising in the Heat

BACKGROUND

Protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) exists in the cutaneous vasculature and eccrine sweat glands. We previously showed that in young habitually active men, exogenous PAR2 activation via the agonist SLIGKV-NH2 had no effect on heat loss responses of cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating during rest or exercise in the heat. However, ageing is associated with altered mechanisms governing these responses. Thus, the effect of exogenous PAR2 activation on cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in older individuals may differ from that in young adults.

METHODS

Local cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate were measured in 9 older males (62 ± 4 years) at four forearm skin sites treated with the following: (1) lactated Ringer solution (control), (2) 0.05 mM, (3) 0.5 mM, or (4) 5 mM SLIGKV-NH2. Measurements were performed while participants rested in a non-heat-stress environment (25°C) for ∼60 min and an additional 50 min thereafter in the heat (40°C). Participants then performed 50 min of cycling at a fixed metabolic heat load of 200 W/m2 (to maintain the same thermal drive for heat loss between participants) followed by a 30-min recovery.

RESULTS

CVC during non-heat-stress resting was elevated from the control site with 5 mM SLIGKV-NH2 (p ≤ 0.05), but this response was not observed during ambient heat exposure. By contrast, 5 mM SLIGKV-NH2 lowered CVC during the early stage (10 and 20 min) of exercise compared to the control site (all p ≤ 0.05). Although sweating during non-heat-stressed and heat-stressed resting was not affected by any dose of SLIGKV-NH2, it was reduced with all SLIGKV-NH2 doses relative to the control site during and following exercise (all p ≤ 0.05).

CONCLUSION

We show that while exogenous PAR2 activation induces cutaneous vasodilatation at rest under non-heat-stressed conditions, it attenuates cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating during and following an exercise-induced heat stress in older men.

Separate and combined effects of KCa and KATP channel blockade with NOS inhibition on cutaneous vasodilation and sweating in older men during heat stress

Our objective in this study was to examine the separate and combined effects of potassium (K⁺) channels and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) on cutaneous vasodilation and sweating in older men during rest and exercise in the heat. In 13 habitually active men (61 ± 4 yr), cutaneous vascular conductance and local sweat rate were assessed at six dorsal forearm skin sites continuously perfused with either 1) lactated Ringer (control), 2) 10 mM N^G-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME, NOS inhibitor), 3) 50 mM tetraethylammonium (TEA; Ca²⁺-activated K⁺ channel blocker), 4) 5 mM glybenclamide (GLY; ATP-sensitive K⁺ channel blocker), 5) 50 mM TEA + 10 mM l-NAME, and 6) 5 mM GLY + 10 mM l-NAME via microdialysis. Participants rested in non-heat stress (25°C) and heat stress (35°C) conditions for ∼60 min each, followed by 50 min of moderate-intensity cycling (∼55% V̇o_2peak) and 30 min of recovery in the heat. During rest and exercise in the heat, l-NAME, TEA + l-NAME, and GLY + l-NAME attenuated CVC relative to control (all P ≤ 0.05), although l-NAME was not different from TEA + l-NAME or GLY + l-NAME (all P > 0.05). TEA attenuated CVC during rest, whereas GLY attenuated CVC during exercise (both P ≤ 0.05). Additionally, whereas neither l-NAME nor TEA altered sweating throughout the protocol (all P > 0.05), combined TEA + l-NAME attenuated sweating during exercise in the heat (P ≤ 0.05). We conclude that in habitually active older men blockade of K_Ca and K_ATP channels attenuates cutaneous vasodilation during rest and exercise in the heat, respectively, and these effects are NOS dependent. Furthermore, combined NOS inhibition and K_Ca channel blockade attenuates sweating during exercise in the heat.

Local arginase inhibition does not modulate cutaneous vasodilation or sweating in young and older men during exercise

Age-related impairments in cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate (SR) during exercise may result from increased arginase activity, which can attenuate endogenous nitric oxide (NO) production. We therefore evaluated whether arginase inhibition modulates these heat-loss responses in young (n = 9, 23 ± 3 yr) and older (n = 9, 66 ± 6 yr) men during two 30-min bouts of moderate-intensity cycling (Ex1 and Ex2) in the heat (35°C). CVC and SR were measured at forearm skin sites perfused with 1) lactated Ringer's (control), 2) N^G-nitro-_L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; NO synthase-inhibited), or 3) N^ω-hydroxy-nor-arginine and S-(2-boronoethyl)-l-cysteine (Nor-NOHA + BEC; arginase-inhibited). In both groups, CVC was reduced at L-NAME relative to control and Nor-NOHA + BEC (both P < 0.01). Likewise, SR was attenuated with L-NAME compared with control and Nor-NOHA + BEC during each exercise bout in the young men (all P ≤ 0.05); however, no influence of treatment on SR in the older men was observed (P = 0.14). Based on these findings, we then evaluated responses in 7 older men (64 ± 7 yr) during passively induced elevations in esophageal temperature (∆T_es) equal to those in Ex1 (0.6°C) and Ex2 (0.8°C). L-NAME reduced CVC by 18 ± 20% CVC_max at a ∆T_es of 0.8°C (P = 0.03) compared with control, whereas Nor-NOHA + BEC augmented CVC by 20 ± 18% CVC_max, on average, throughout heating (both P ≤ 0.03). SR was not influenced by either treatment (P = 0.80) Thus, arginase inhibition does not modulate CVC or SR during exercise in the heat but, consistent with previous findings, does augment CVC in older men during passive heating. NEW & NOTEWORTHY In the current study, we demonstrate that local arginase inhibition does not influence forearm cutaneous vasodilatory and sweating responses in young or older men during exercise-heat stress. Consistent with previous findings, however, we observed augmented cutaneous blood flow with arginase inhibition during whole-body passive heat stress. Thus, arginase differentially affects cutaneous vasodilation depending on the mode of heat stress but does not influence sweating during exercise or passive heating.

Activation of protease-activated receptor 2 mediates cutaneous vasodilatation but not sweating: roles of nitric oxide synthase and cyclo-oxygenase

NEW FINDINGS

What is the central question of this study? Protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) is located in the endothelial cells of skin vessels and eccrine sweat glands. However, a functional role of PAR2 in the control of cutaneous blood flow and sweating remains to be assessed in humans in vivo. What is the main finding and its importance? Our results demonstrate that in normothermic resting humans in vivo, activation of PAR2 elicits cutaneous vasodilatation partly through nitric oxide synthase-dependent mechanisms, but does not mediate sweating. These results provide important new insights into the physiological significance of PAR2 in human skin. Protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) is present in human skin, including keratinocytes, endothelial cells of skin microvessels and eccrine sweat glands. However, whether PAR2 contributes functionally to the regulation of cutaneous blood flow and sweating remains entirely unclear in humans in vivo. We hypothesized that activation of PAR2 directly stimulates cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating via actions of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and cyclo-oxygenase (COX). In 12 physically active young men (29 ± 5 years old), cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate were measured at four intradermal microdialysis forearm skin sites that were treated with the following: (i) lactated Ringer's solution (control); (ii) 10 mm N^G -nitro-l-arginine (NOS inhibitor); (iii) 10 mm ketorolac (COX inhibitor); or (iv) a combination of both inhibitors. At all sites, a PAR2 agonist (SLIGKV-NH₂ ) was co-administered in a dose-dependent fashion (0.06, 0.18, 0.55, 1.66 and 5 mm, each for 25 min). The highest dose of SLIGKV-NH₂ (5 mm) increased CVC from baseline at the control site (P ≤ 0.05). This increase in CVC associated with PAR2 activation was attenuated by NOS inhibition regardless of the presence or absence of simultaneous COX inhibition (both P ≤ 0.05). However, COX inhibition alone did not affect the PAR2-mediated increase in CVC (P > 0.05). No increase in sweat rate was measured at any administered dose of SLIGKV-NH₂ (all P > 0.05). We show that in normothermic resting humans in vivo, PAR2 activation does not increase sweat rate, whereas it does modulate cutaneous vasodilatation through NOS-dependent mechanisms.

Sweating as a heat loss thermoeffector

In humans, sweating is the most powerful autonomic thermoeffector. The evaporation of sweat provides by far the greatest potential for heat loss and it represents the only means of heat loss when air temperature exceeds skin temperature. Sweat production results from the integration of afferent neural information from peripheral and central thermoreceptors which leads to an increase in skin sympathetic nerve activity. At the neuroglandular junction, acetylcholine is released and binds to muscarinic receptors which stimulate the secretion of a primary fluid by the secretory coil of eccrine glands. The primary fluid subsequently travels through a duct where ions are reabsorbed. The end result is the expulsion of hypotonic sweat on to the skin surface. Sweating increases in proportion with the intensity of the thermal challenge in an attempt of the body to attain heat balance and maintain a stable internal body temperature. The control of sweating can be modified by biophysical factors, heat acclimation, dehydration, and nonthermal factors. The purpose of this article is to review the role of sweating as a heat loss thermoeffector in humans.

Fluid replacement modulates oxidative stress- but not nitric oxide-mediated cutaneous vasodilation and sweating during prolonged exercise in the heat

The roles of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) activation in regulating cutaneous vasodilation and sweating during prolonged (≥60 min) exercise are currently unclear. Moreover, it remains to be determined whether fluid replacement (FR) modulates the above thermoeffector responses. To investigate, 11 young men completed 90 min of continuous moderate intensity (46% V̇o2peak) cycling performed at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production of 600 W (No FR condition). On a separate day, participants completed a second session of the same protocol while receiving FR to offset sweat losses (FR condition). Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and local sweat rate (LSR) were measured at four intradermal microdialysis forearm sites perfused with: 1) lactated Ringer (Control); 2) 10 mM NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME, NOS inhibition); 3) 10 mM ascorbate (nonselective antioxidant); or 4) 4.34 nM losartan (AT1R inhibition). Relative to Control (71% CVCmax at both time points), CVC with ascorbate (80% and 83% CVCmax) was elevated at 60 and 90 min of exercise during FR (both P < 0.02) but not at any time during No FR (all P > 0.31). In both conditions, CVC was reduced at end exercise with l-NAME (60% CVCmax; both P < 0.02) but was not different relative to Control at the losartan site (76% CVCmax; both P > 0.19). LSR did not differ between sites in either condition (all P > 0.10). We conclude that NOS regulates cutaneous vasodilation, but not sweating, irrespective of FR, and that ROS influence cutaneous vasodilation during prolonged exercise with FR.

An Overt Chemical Protective Garment Reduces Thermal Strain Compared with a Covert Garment in Warm-Wet but Not Hot-Dry Environments

Objectives: A commercial chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) protective covert garment has recently been developed with the aim of reducing thermal strain. A covert CBRN protective layer can be worn under other clothing, with equipment added for full chemical protection when needed. However, it is unknown whether the covert garment offers any alleviation to thermal strain during work compared with a traditional overt ensemble. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare thermal strain and work tolerance times during work in an overt and covert ensemble offering the same level of CBRN protection.

Methods: Eleven male participants wore an overt (OVERT) or covert (COVERT) CBRN ensemble and walked (4 km·h⁻¹, 1% grade) for a maximum of 120 min in either a wet bulb globe temperature [WBGT] of 21, 30, or 37°C (Neutral, WarmWet and HotDry, respectively). The trials were ceased if the participants' gastrointestinal temperature reached 39°C, heart rate reached 90% of maximum, walking time reached 120 min or due to self-termination.

Results: All participants completed 120 min of walking in Neutral. Work tolerance time was greater in OVERT compared with COVERT in WarmWet (P < 0.001, 116.5[9.9] vs. 88.9[12.2] min, respectively), though this order was reversed in HotDry (P = 0.003, 37.3[5.3] vs. 48.4[4.6] min, respectively). The rate of change in mean body temperature and mean skin temperature was greater in COVERT (0.025[0.004] and 0.045[0.010]°C·min⁻¹, respectively) compared with OVERT (0.014[0.004] and 0.027[0.007]°C·min⁻¹, respectively) in WarmWet (P < 0.001 and P = 0.028, respectively). However, the rate of change in mean body temperature and mean skin temperature was greater in OVERT (0.068[0.010] and 0.170[0.026]°C·min⁻¹, respectively) compared with COVERT (0.059[0.004] and 0.120[0.017]°C·min⁻¹, respectively) in HotDry (P = 0.002 and P < 0.001, respectively). Thermal sensation, thermal comfort, and ratings of perceived exertion did not differ between garments at trial cessation (P > 0.05).

Conclusion: Those dressed in OVERT experienced lower thermal strain and longer work tolerance times compared with COVERT in a warm-wet environment. However, COVERT may be an optimal choice in a hot-dry environment. These findings have practical implications for those making decisions on the choice of CBRN ensemble to be used during work.

Do nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase contribute to sweating response during passive heating in endurance-trained athletes?

The aim of our study was to determine if habitual endurance training can influence the relative contribution of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX) in the regulation of sweating during a passive heat stress in young adults. Ten trained athletes and nine untrained counterparts were passively heated until oral temperature (as estimated by sublingual temperature, T_or) increased by 1.5°C above baseline resting. Forearm sweat rate (ventilated capsule) was measured at three skin sites continuously perfused with either lactated Ringer's solution (Control), 10 mmol/L N^G -nitro-_L-arginine methyl ester (_L-NAME, non-selective NOS inhibitor), or 10 mmol/L ketorolac (Ketorolac, non-selective COX inhibitor) via intradermal microdialysis. Sweat rate was averaged for each 0.3°C increase in T_or Sweat rate at the _L-NAME site was lower than Control following a 0.9 and 1.2°C increase in T_or in both groups (all P ≤ 0.05). Relative to the Control site, NOS-inhibition reduced sweating similarly between the groups (P = 0.51). Sweat rate at the Ketorolac site was not different from the Control at any levels of T_or in both groups (P > 0.05). Nevertheless, a greater sweat rate was measured at the end of heating in the trained as compared to the untrained individuals (P ≤ 0.05). We show that NOS contributes similarly to sweating in both trained and untrained individuals during a passive heat stress. Further, no effect of COX on sweating was measured for either group. The greater sweat production observed in endurance-trained athletes is likely mediated by factors other than NOS- and COX-dependent mechanisms.

No effect of ascorbate on cutaneous vasodilation and sweating in older men and those with type 2 diabetes exercising in the heat

Aging and chronic disease such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) are associated with impairments in the body's ability to dissipate heat. To reduce the risk of heat-related injuries in these heat vulnerable individuals, it is necessary to identify interventions that can attenuate this impairment. We evaluated the hypothesis that intradermal administration of ascorbate improves cutaneous vasodilation and sweating in older adults via nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-dependent mechanisms during exercise in the heat and whether these improvements, if any, are greater in individuals with T2D. Older males with (n = 12, 61 ± 9 years) and without (n = 12, 64 ± 7 years) T2D performed two 30-min bouts of cycling at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production of 500 W (~70% peak oxygen uptake) in the heat (35°C); each followed by a 20- and 40-min recovery, respectively. Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate were measured at four intradermal microdialysis sites treated with either (1) lactated Ringer (Control), (2) 10 mmol/L ascorbate (an antioxidant), (3) 10 mmol/L L-NAME (non-selective NOS inhibitor), or (4) a combination of ascorbate + L-NAME. In both groups, ascorbate did not modulate CVC or sweating during exercise relative to Control (all P > 0.05). In comparison to Control, L-NAME alone or combined with ascorbate attenuated CVC during exercise (all P ≤ 0.05) but had no influence on sweating (all P > 0.05). We show that in both healthy and T2D older adults, intradermal administration of ascorbate does not improve cutaneous vasodilation and sweating during exercise in the heat. However, NOS plays an important role in mediating cutaneous vasodilation.

Individual variations in nitric oxide synthase-dependent sweating in young and older males during exercise in the heat: role of aerobic power

We evaluated the association between aerobic power (defined by peak oxygen consumption; VO_2peak) and the contribution of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) to the sweating response in young and older individuals during exercise in the heat. Data from 44 young (24 ± 1 years) and 48 older (61 ± 2 years) males with mean VO_2peak of 47.8 ± 2.4 (range, 28.0–62.3) and 39.1 ± 2.3 (range, 26.4–55.7) mLO₂ kg⁻¹ min⁻¹, respectively, were compiled from our prior studies. Participants performed two 15‐ to 30‐min bouts of exercise at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production of 400 or 500 W, each separated by 15–20 min recovery in the heat (35°C, relative humidity of 20%). Forearm sweat rate (ventilated capsule technique) was measured at two skin sites that were continuously and simultaneously administered with lactated Ringers solution (Control) or 10 mmol/L N^G‐nitro‐_L‐arginine methyl ester (_L‐NAME, nonselective NOS inhibitor) via intradermal microdialysis. Sweat rate during the final 5 min of each exercise bout was lower with _L‐NAME compared to the Control in both groups (all P < 0.05). The magnitude of the attenuation in sweat rate induced by _L‐NAME compared to the Control was not correlated with VO_2peak (all P ≥ 0.46) while this attenuation was negatively correlated with the sweat rate at the Control in both groups and in both exercise bouts (all P < 0.01, R ≤ −0.43). These results suggest that NOS‐dependent sweating is not associated with aerobic power per se, while it becomes evident in individuals who produce larger sweat rates during exercise irrespective of age.

Nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase modulate β-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in young men

KEY POINTS

β-Adrenergic receptor agonists such as isoproterenol induce cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in humans, but the mechanisms underpinning this response remain unresolved. Using intradermal microdialysis, we evaluated the roles of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX) in β-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating elicited by administration of isoproterenol. We show that while NOS contributes to β-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation, COX restricts cutaneous vasodilatation. We also show that combined inhibition of NOS and COX augments β-adrenergic sweating These new findings advance our basic knowledge regarding the physiological control of cutaneous blood flow and sweating, and provide important and new information to better understand the physiological significance of β-adrenergic receptors in the skin.

ABSTRACT

β-Adrenergic receptor agonists such as isoproterenol can induce cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in humans, but the mechanisms underpinning this response remain unresolved. We evaluated the hypotheses that (1) nitric oxide synthase (NOS) contributes to β-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation, whereas cyclooxygenase (COX) limits the vasodilatation, and (2) COX contributes to β-adrenergic sweating. In 10 young males (25 ± 5 years), cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate were evaluated at four intradermal forearm skin sites infused with (1) lactated Ringer solution (control), (2) 10 mm N^ω -nitro-l-arginine (l-NNA), a non-specific NOS inhibitor, (3) 10 mm ketorolac, a non-specific COX inhibitor, or (4) a combination of l-NNA and ketorolac. All sites were co-administered with a high dose of isoproterenol (100 μm) for 3 min to maximally induce β-adrenergic sweating (β-adrenergic sweating is significantly blunted by subsequent activations). Approximately 60 min after the washout period, three incremental doses of isoproterenol were co-administered (1, 10 and 100 μm each for 25 min). Increases in CVC induced by the first and second 100 μm isoproterenol were attenuated by l-NNA alone, and those in response to all doses of isoproterenol were reduced by l-NNA with co-infusion of ketorolac (all P ≤ 0.05). Ketorolac alone augmented increases in CVC induced by 10 μm and by the second 100 μm isoproterenol (both P ≤ 0.05). While isoproterenol-induced sweating was not affected by the separate administration of l-NNA or ketorolac (all P > 0.05), their combined administration augmented sweating elicited by the first 3 min of 100 μm isoproterenol (P = 0.05). We show that while NOS contributes to β-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation, COX restrains the vasodilatation. Finally, combined inhibition of NOS and COX augments β-adrenergic sweating.

The mechanisms underlying the muscle metaboreflex modulation of sweating and cutaneous blood flow in passively heated humans

Metaboreceptors can modulate cutaneous blood flow and sweating during heat stress but the mechanisms remain unknown. Fourteen participants (31 ± 13 years) performed 1‐min bout of isometric handgrip (IHG) exercise at 60% of their maximal voluntary contraction followed by a 3‐min occlusion (OCC), each separated by 10 min, initially under low (LHS, to activate sweating without changes in core temperature) and high (HHS, whole‐body heating to a core temperature increase of 1.0°C) heat stress conditions. Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate were measured continuously at four forearm skin sites perfused with 1) lactated Ringer's solution (Control), 2) 10 mmol L‐NAME [inhibits nitric oxide synthase (NOS)], 3) 10 mmol Ketorolac [inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX)], or 4) 4 mmol theophylline (THEO; inhibits adenosine receptors). Relative to pre‐IHG levels with Control, NOS inhibition attenuated the metaboreceptor‐mediated increase in sweating under LHS and HHS (P ≤ 0.05), albeit the attenuation was greater under LHS (P ≤ 0.05). In addition, a reduction from baseline was observed with THEO under LHS during OCC (P ≤ 0.05), but not HHS (both P > 0.05). In contrast, CVC was lower than Control with L‐NAME during OCC in HHS (P ≤ 0.05), but not LHS (P > 0.05). We show that metaboreceptor activation modulates CVC via the stimulation of NOS and adenosine receptors, whereas NOS, but not COX or adenosine receptors, contributes to sweating at all levels of heating.

The effect of endothelin A and B receptor blockade on cutaneous vascular and sweating responses in young men during and following exercise in the heat

During exercise, cutaneous vasodilation and sweating responses occur, whereas these responses rapidly decrease during postexercise recovery. We hypothesized that the activation of endothelin A (ET_A) receptors, but not endothelin B (ET_B) receptors, attenuate cutaneous vasodilation during high-intensity exercise and contribute to the subsequent postexercise suppression of cutaneous vasodilation. We also hypothesized that both receptors increase sweating during and following high-intensity exercise. Eleven men (24 ± 4 yr) performed an intermittent cycling protocol consisting of two 30-min bouts of moderate- (40% V̇o_2peak) and high-intensity (75% V̇o_2peak) exercise in the heat (35°C), each separated by a 20- and 40-min recovery period, respectively. Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate were evaluated at four intradermal microdialysis skin sites: 1) lactated Ringer (control), 2) 500 nM BQ123 (a selective ET_A receptor blocker), 3) 300 nM BQ788 (a selective ET_B receptor blocker), or 4) a combination of BQ123 + BQ788. There were no between-site differences in CVC during each exercise bout (all P > 0.05); however, CVC following high-intensity exercise was greater at BQ123 (56 ± 9%max) and BQ123 + BQ788 (55 ± 14%max) sites relative to the control site (43 ± 12%max) (all P ≤ 0.05). Sweat rate did not differ between sites throughout the protocol (all P > 0.05). We show that neither ET_A nor ET_B receptors modulate cutaneous vasodilation and sweating responses during and following moderate- and high-intensity exercise in the heat, with the exception that ET_A receptors may partly contribute to the suppression of cutaneous vasodilation following high-intensity exercise.

Type 1 diabetes modulates cyclooxygenase- and nitric oxide-dependent mechanisms governing sweating but not cutaneous vasodilation during exercise in the heat

Both cyclooxygenase (COX) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) contribute to sweating, whereas NOS alone contributes to cutaneous vasodilation during exercise in the heat. Here, we evaluated if Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) modulates these responses. Adults with (n = 11, 25 ± 5 yr) and without (n = 12, 24 ± 4 yr) T1DM performed two bouts of 30-min cycling at a fixed rate of heat production of 400 W in the heat (35°C); each followed by a 20- and 40-min recovery period, respectively. Sweat rate and cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) were measured at four intradermal microdialysis sites treated with either 1) lactated Ringer (vehicle control site), 2) 10 mM ketorolac (nonselective COX inhibitor), 3) 10 mM N^G-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (nonselective NOS inhibitor), or 4) a combination of both inhibitors. In nondiabetic adults, separate and combined inhibition of COX and NOS reduced exercise sweat rate (P ≤ 0.05), and the magnitude of reductions were similar across sites. In individuals with T1DM, inhibition of COX resulted in an increase in sweat rate of 0.10 ± 0.09 and 0.09 ± 0.08 mg ·: min^-1 ·: cm^-2 for the first and second exercise bouts, respectively, relative to vehicle control site (P ≤ 0.05), whereas NOS inhibition had no effect on sweating. In both groups, NOS inhibition reduced CVC during exercise (P ≤ 0.05), although the magnitude of reduction did not differ between the nondiabetic and T1DM groups (exercise 1: -28 ± 10 vs. -23 ± 8% max, P = 0.51; exercise 2: -31 ± 12 vs. -24 ± 10% max, P = 0.38). We show that in individuals with T1DM performing moderate intensity exercise in the heat, NOS-dependent sweating but not cutaneous vasodilation is attenuated, whereas COX inhibition increases sweating.

The interactive contributions of Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase and nitric oxide synthase to sweating and cutaneous vasodilatation during exercise in the heat

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) contributes to sweating and cutaneous vasodilatation during exercise in the heat. Similarly, reports show that Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase activation can modulate sweating and microvascular circulation. In light of the fact that NO can activate Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase, we evaluated whether there is an interaction between Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase and NOS in the regulation of heat loss responses during an exercise-induced heat stress. We demonstrate that Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase and NOS do not synergistically influence local forearm sweating during moderate intensity (fixed rate of metabolic heat production of 500 W) exercise in the heat (35°C). Conversely, we show an interactive role between NOS and Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase in the modulation of cutaneous vasodilatation. These findings provide novel insight regarding the mechanisms underpinning the control of sweating and cutaneous vasodilatation during exercise in the heat. Given that ouabain may be prescribed as a cardiac glycoside in clinical settings, potential heat loss impairments with ouabain administration should be explored.

ABSTRACT

Nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS) contributes to the heat loss responses of sweating and cutaneous vasodilatation. Given that NO can activate Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase, which also contributes to sweating and microvasculature regulation, we evaluated the separate and combined influence of Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase and NOS on sweating and cutaneous vasodilatation. Thirteen young (23±3 years) males performed two 30 min semi-recumbent cycling bouts in the heat (35°C) at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production (500 W) followed by 20 and 40 min recoveries, respectively. Local sweat rate (LSR) and cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) were measured at four forearm skin sites continuously perfused via intradermal microdialysis with either: (1) lactated Ringer solution (Control); (2) 6 mᴍ ouabain (Ouabain), a Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase inhibitor; (3) 10 mᴍ l-N(G) -nitroarginine methyl ester (l-NAME), a NOS inhibitor; or (4) 6 mᴍ ouabain and 10 mᴍ l-NAME (Ouabain+l-NAME). At the end of both exercise bouts relative to Control, LSR was attenuated with Ouabain (54-60%), l-NAME (12-13%) and Ouabain+l-NAME (68-74%; all P < 0.05). Moreover, the sum of attenuations from Control induced by independent administration of Ouabain and l-NAME was similar to the combined infusion of Ouabain+l-NAME (both P ≥ 0.74). Compared to Control, CVC at the end of both exercise bouts was similar with Ouabain (both P ≥ 0.30), but attenuated with l-NAME (%CVCmax reduction from Control, 24-25%). Furthermore, CVC at the Ouabain+l-NAME site (38-39%; all P < 0.01) was attenuated compared to Control and did not differ from baseline resting values (both P ≥ 0.81). We show that Na(+) /K(+) -ATPase and NOS do not synergistically mediate sweating, whereas they influence cutaneous blood flow in an interactive manner during exercise in the heat.

Endothelin-1 modulates methacholine-induced cutaneous vasodilatation but not sweating in young human skin

KEY POINTS

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent endothelial-derived vasoconstrictor that may modulate cholinergic cutaneous vascular regulation. Endothelin receptors are also expressed on the human eccrine sweat gland, although it remains unclear whether ET-1 modulates cholinergic sweating. We investigated whether ET-1 attenuates cholinergic cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating through a nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-dependent mechanism. Our findings show that ET-1 attenuates methacholine-induced cutaneous vasodilatation through a NOS-independent mechanism. We also demonstrate that ET-1 attenuates cutaneous vasodilatation in response to sodium nitroprusside, suggesting that ET-1 diminishes the dilatation capacity of vascular smooth muscle cells. We show that ET-1 does not modulate methacholine-induced sweating at any of the administered concentrations. Our findings advance our knowledge pertaining to the peripheral control underpinning the regulation of cutaneous blood flow and sweating and infer that ET-1 may attenuate the heat loss responses of cutaneous blood flow, but not sweating.

ABSTRACT

The present study investigated the effect of endothelin-1 (ET-1) on cholinergic mechanisms of end-organs (i.e. skin blood vessels and sweat glands) for heat dissipation. We evaluated the hypothesis that ET-1 attenuates cholinergic cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating through a nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-dependent mechanism. Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate were assessed in three protocols: in Protocol 1 (n = 8), microdialysis sites were perfused with lactated Ringer solution (Control), 40 pm, 4 nm or 400 nm ET-1; in Protocol 2 (n = 11) sites were perfused with lactated Ringer solution (Control), 400 nm ET-1, 10 mm N(G) -nitro-l-arginine (l-NNA; a NOS inhibitor) or a combination of 400 nm ET-1 and 10 mm l-NNA; in Protocol 3 (n = 8), only two sites (Control and 400 nm ET-1) were utilized to assess the influence of ET-1 on the dilatation capacity of vascular smooth muscle cells (sodium nitroprusside; SNP). Methacholine (MCh) was co-administered in a dose-dependent manner (0.0125, 0.25, 5, 100, 2000 mm, each for 25 min) at all skin sites. ET-1 at 400 nm (P < 0.05) compared to lower doses (40 pm and 4 nm) (all P > 0.05) significantly attenuated increases in CVC in response to 0.25 and 5 mm MCh. A high dose of ET-1 (400 nm) co-infused with l-NNA further attenuated CVC during 0.25, 5 and 100 mm MCh administration relative to the ET-1 site (all P < 0.05). Cutaneous vasodilatation in response to SNP was significantly blunted after administration of 400 nm ET-1 (P < 0.05). We show that ET-1 attenuates cutaneous vasodilatation through a NOS-independent mechanism, possibly through a vascular smooth muscle cell-dependent mechanism, and methacholine-induced sweating is not altered by ET-1.

Exploring the mechanisms underpinning sweating: the development of a specialized ventilated capsule for use with intradermal microdialysis

Many studies have aimed to identify the controllers of sweating using ventilated capsules with intradermal microdialysis. It is unclear, however, if the surface area covered by the capsule influences the observed response as a result of differences in the number of sweat glands affected by the infused pharmacological agent relative to the total glands captured by the capsule. We evaluated the area of skin perfused with agents delivered via microdialysis. Thereafter, we developed a specialized sweat capsule (1.1 cm(2)) and compared the sweating response with a classic capsule (2.8 cm(2)). InProtocol 1(n = 6), methacholine was delivered to forearm skin in a dose-dependent manner (1-2000 mmol L(-1)). The area of activated sweat glands was assessed via the modified iodine-paper technique. InProtocol 2(n = 6), the area of inhibited sweat glands induced by ouabain and atropine was assessed during moderate-intensity cycling. Marked variability in the affected skin area was observed (0.9 ± 0.4 to 5.2 ± 1.1 cm(2)). InProtocol 3(n = 6), we compared the attenuation in local sweat rate (LSR) induced by atropine between the new and classic capsule during moderate-intensity cycling. Atropine attenuated sweating as assessed using the new (control: 0.87 ± 0.23 mg min(-1) cm(-2)vs. atropine: 0.54 ± 0.22 mg min(-1) cm(-2);P < 0.01) and classic (control: 0.85 ± 0.33 mg min(-1) cm(-2)vs. atropine: 0.60 ± 0.26 mg min(-1) cm(-2);P = 0.05) capsule designs. Importantly, responses did not differ between capsule designs (P = 0.23). These findings provide critical information regarding the skin surface area perfused by microdialysis and suggest that use of a larger capsule does not alter the mechanistic insight into the sweating response gained when using microdialysis.

iNOS-dependent sweating and eNOS-dependent cutaneous vasodilation are evident in younger adults, but are diminished in older adults exercising in the heat

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) contributes to sweating and cutaneous vasodilation during exercise in younger adults. We hypothesized that endothelial NOS (eNOS) and neuronal NOS (nNOS) mediate NOS-dependent sweating, whereas eNOS induces NOS-dependent cutaneous vasodilation in younger adults exercising in the heat. Further, aging may upregulate inducible NOS (iNOS), which may attenuate sweating and cutaneous vasodilator responses. We hypothesized that iNOS inhibition would augment sweating and cutaneous vasodilation in exercising older adults. Physically active younger (n = 12, 23 ± 4 yr) and older (n = 12, 60 ± 6 yr) adults performed two 30-min bouts of cycling at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production (400 W) in the heat (35°C). Sweat rate and cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) were evaluated at four intradermal microdialysis sites with: 1) lactated Ringer (control), 2) nNOS inhibitor (nNOS-I, NPLA), 3) iNOS inhibitor (iNOS-I, 1400W), or 4) eNOS inhibitor (eNOS-I, LNAA). In younger adults during both exercise bouts, all inhibitors decreased sweating relative to control, albeit a lower sweat rate was observed at iNOS-I compared with eNOS-I and nNOS-I sites (all P < 0.05). CVC at the eNOS-I site was lower than control in younger adults throughout the intermittent exercise protocol (all P < 0.05). In older adults, there were no differences between control and iNOS-I sites for sweating and CVC during both exercise bouts (all P > 0.05). We show that iNOS and eNOS are the main contributors to NOS-dependent sweating and cutaneous vasodilation, respectively, in physically active younger adults exercising in the heat, and that iNOS inhibition does not alter sweating or cutaneous vasodilation in exercising physically active older adults.

Responses to hyperthermia. Optimizing heat dissipation by convection and evaporation: Neural control of skin blood flow and sweating in humans

Under normothermic, resting conditions, humans dissipate heat from the body at a rate approximately equal to heat production. Small discrepancies between heat production and heat elimination would, over time, lead to significant changes in heat storage and body temperature. When heat production or environmental temperature is high the challenge of maintaining heat balance is much greater. This matching of heat elimination with heat production is a function of the skin circulation facilitating heat transport to the body surface and sweating, enabling evaporative heat loss. These processes are manifestations of the autonomic control of cutaneous vasomotor and sudomotor functions and form the basis of this review. We focus on these systems in the responses to hyperthermia. In particular, the cutaneous vascular responses to heat stress and the current understanding of the neurovascular mechanisms involved. The available research regarding cutaneous active vasodilation and vasoconstriction is highlighted, with emphasis on active vasodilation as a major responder to heat stress. Involvement of the vasoconstrictor and active vasodilator controls of the skin circulation in the context of heat stress and nonthermoregulatory reflexes (blood pressure, exercise) are also considered. Autonomic involvement in the cutaneous vascular responses to direct heating and cooling of the skin are also discussed. We examine the autonomic control of sweating, including cholinergic and noncholinergic mechanisms, the local control of sweating, thermoregulatory and nonthermoregulatory reflex control and the possible relationship between sudomotor and cutaneous vasodilator function. Finally, we comment on the clinical relevance of these control schemes in conditions of autonomic dysfunction.

Sudomotor and vasomotor activity during the menstrual cycle with global heating

Many studies have reported that there are changes in sympathetic activity throughout the menstrual cycle as there are oestrogen receptor in the hypothalamus and all other parts of the sympathetic nervous system. The purpose of this study was to see whether there were variations in sympathetic activity, skin vasomotor and sweat gland sudomotor rhythms during the menstrual cycle. Eight young female subjects with a regular menstrual cycle participated in the study. Subjects were tested once during the follicular phase and once during the luteal phase. Skin blood flow and sweat rate were significantly higher in the luteal phase compared with the follicular phase (p < .05), but the frequency and magnitude of sudomotor and vasomotor rhythms were significantly greater in the follicular phase (p < .05). In contrast, spectral data showed less sympathetic activity in the luteal phase. A significant finding here is that the sudomotor rhythm of sweat glands is altered by the menstrual cycle.

Local infusion of ascorbate augments NO-dependent cutaneous vasodilatation during intense exercise in the heat

Recent work demonstrates that nitric oxide (NO) contributes to cutaneous vasodilatation during moderate (400 W of metabolic heat production) but not high (700 W of metabolic heat production) intensity exercise bouts performed in the heat (35°C). The present study evaluated whether the impairment in NO-dependent cutaneous vasodilatation was the result of a greater accumulation of reactive oxygen species during high (700 W of metabolic heat production) relative to moderate (500 W of metabolic heat production) intensity exercise. It was shown that local infusion of ascorbate (an anti-oxidant) improves NO-dependent forearm cutaneous vasodilatation during high intensity exercise in the heat. These findings provide novel insight into the physiological mechanisms governing cutaneous blood flow during exercise-induced heat stress and provide direction for future research exploring whether oxidative stress underlies the impairments in heat dissipation that may occur in older adults, as well as in individuals with pathophysiological conditions such as type 2 diabetes. Nitric oxide (NO)-dependent cutaneous vasodilatation is reportedly diminished during exercise performed at a high (700 W) relative to moderate (400 W) rate of metabolic heat production. The present study evaluated whether this impairment results from increased oxidative stress associated with an accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during high intensity exercise. On two separate days, 11 young (mean ± SD, 24 ± 4 years) males cycled in the heat (35°C) at a moderate (500 W) or high (700 W) rate of metabolic heat production. Each session included two 30 min exercise bouts followed by 20 and 40 min of recovery, respectively. Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) was monitored at four forearm skin sites continuously perfused via intradermal microdialysis with: (1) lactated Ringer solution (Control); (2) 10 mm ascorbate (Ascorbate); (3) 10 mm l-NAME; or (4) 10 mm ascorbate + 10 mm l-NAME (Ascorbate + l-NAME). At the end of each 500 W exercise bout, CVC was attenuated with l-NAME (∼35% CVCmax ) and Ascorbate + l-NAME (∼43% CVCmax ) compared to Control (∼60% CVCmax ; all P < 0.04); however, Ascorbate did not modulate CVC during exercise (∼60% CVCmax ; both P > 0.87). Conversely, CVC was elevated with Ascorbate (∼72% CVCmax ; both P < 0.03) but remained similar to Control (∼59% CVCmax ) with l-NAME (∼50% CVCmax ) and Ascorbate + l-NAME (∼47% CVCmax ; all P > 0.05) at the end of both 700 W exercise bouts. We conclude that oxidative stress associated with an accumulation of ascorbate-sensitive ROS impairs NO-dependent cutaneous vasodilatation during intense exercise.

Do nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase contribute to the heat loss responses in older males exercising in the heat?

This study evaluated the separate and combined roles of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX) in forearm sweating and cutaneous vasodilatation in older adults during intermittent exercise in the heat. Twelve healthy older (62 ± 7 years) males performed two 30 min cycling bouts at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production (400 W) in the heat (35°C, 20% relative humidity). The exercise bouts were followed by 20 and 40 min of recovery, respectively. Forearm sweat rate (ventilated capsule) and cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC, laser Doppler perfusion units/mean arterial pressure) were evaluated at four skin sites that were continuously perfused via intradermal microdialysis with: (1) lactated Ringer solution (Control), (2) 10 mm ketorolac (non-selective COX inhibitor), (3) 10 mm N(G) -nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME; non-selective NOS inhibitor) or (4) a combination of 10 mm ketorolac + 10 mm l-NAME. Sweating was not different between the four sites during either exercise bout (main effect P = 0.92) (average of last 5 min of second exercise, Control, 0.80 ± 0.06; ketorolac, 0.77 ± 0.09; l-NAME, 0.74 ± 0.07; ketorolac + l-NAME, 0.77 ± 0.09 mg min(-1) cm(-2) ). During both exercise bouts, relative to CVC evaluated at the Control site (average of last 5 min of second exercise, 69 ± 6%max), CVC was similar at the ketorolac site (P = 0.62; 66 ± 4%max) whereas it was attenuated to a similar extent at both the l-NAME (49 ± 8%max) and ketorolac + l-NAME (54 ± 8%max) sites (both P < 0.05). Thus, we demonstrate that NOS and COX are not functionally involved in forearm sweating whereas only NOS contributes to forearm cutaneous vasodilatation in older adults during intermittent exercise in the heat.

Forearm cutaneous vascular and sudomotor responses to whole body passive heat stress in young smokers

The purpose of this study was to compare smokers and nonsmokers' sudomotor and cutaneous vascular responses to whole body passive heat stress. Nine regularly smoking (SMK: 29 ± 9 yr; 10 ± 6 cigarettes/day) and 13 nonsmoking (N-SMK: 27 ± 8 yr) males were passively heated until core temperature (TC) increased 1.5°C from baseline. Forearm local sweat rate (LSR) via ventilated capsule, sweat gland activation (SGA), sweat gland output (SGO), and cutaneous vasomotor activity via laser-Doppler flowmetry (CVC) were measured as mean body temperature increased (ΔTb) during passive heating using a water-perfused suit. Compared with N-SMK, SMK had a smaller ΔTb at the onset of sweating (0.52 ± 0.19 vs. 0.35 ± 0.14°C, respectively; P = 0.03) and cutaneous vasodilation (0.61 ± 0.21 vs. 0.31 ± 0.12°C, respectively; P < 0.01). Increases in LSR and CVC per °C ΔTb (i.e., sensitivity) were similar in N-SMK and SMK (LSR: 0.63 ± 0.21 vs. 0.60 ± 0.40 Δmg/cm(2)/min/°C ΔTb, respectively, P = 0.81; CVC: 82.5 ± 46.2 vs. 58.9 ± 23.3 Δ%max/°C ΔTb, respectively; P = 0.19). However, the plateau in LSR during whole body heating was higher in N-SMK vs. SMK (1.00 ± 0.13 vs. 0.79 ± 0.26 mg·cm(-2)·min(-1); P = 0.03), which was likely a result of higher SGO (8.94 ± 3.99 vs. 5.94 ± 3.49 μg·gland(-1)·min(-1), respectively; P = 0.08) and not number of SGA (104 ± 7 vs. 121 ± 9 glands/cm(2), respectively; P = 0.58). During whole body passive heat stress, smokers had an earlier onset for forearm sweating and cutaneous vasodilation, but a lower local sweat rate that was likely due to lower sweat output per gland. These data provide insight into local (i.e., forearm) thermoregulatory responses of young smokers during uncompensatory whole body passive heat stress.

Can intradermal administration of angiotensin II influence human heat loss responses during whole body heat stress?

It is unclear if angiotensin II, which can increase the production of reactive oxygen species (oxidative stress), modulates heat loss responses of cutaneous blood flow and sweating. We tested the hypothesis that angiotensin II-induced increases in oxidative stress impair cutaneous perfusion and sweating during rest and exercise in the heat. Eleven young (24 ± 4 yr) healthy adults performed two 30-min cycling bouts at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production (400 W) in the heat (35°C). The first and second exercises were followed by a 20- and 40-min recovery. Four microdialysis fibers were placed in the forearm skin for continuous administration of either: 1) lactated Ringer (control), 2) 10 μM angiotensin II, 3) 10 mM ascorbate (an antioxidant), or 4) a combination of 10 μM angiotensin II + 10 mM ascorbate. Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC; laser-Doppler perfusion units/mean arterial pressure) and sweating (ventilated capsule) were evaluated at each skin site. Compared with control, angiotensin II reduced both CVC and sweating at baseline resting and during each recovery in the heat (all P < 0.05). However, during both exercise bouts, there were no differences in CVC or sweating between the treatment sites (all P > 0.05). When ascorbate was coinfused with angiotensin II, the effect of angiotensin II on sweating was abolished (all P > 0.05); however, its effect on CVC at baseline resting and during each recovery remained intact (all P < 0.05). We show angiotensin II impairs cutaneous perfusion independent of oxidative stress, while it impairs sweating through increasing oxidative stress during exposure to an ambient heat stress before and following exercise.

Aging impairs heat loss, but when does it matter?

Aging is associated with an attenuated physiological ability to dissipate heat. However, it remains unclear if age-related impairments in heat dissipation only occur above a certain level of heat stress and whether this response is altered by aerobic fitness. Therefore, we examined changes in whole body evaporative heat loss (HE) as determined using whole body direct calorimetry in young (n = 10; 21 ± 1 yr), untrained middle-aged (n = 10; 48 ± 5 yr), and older (n = 10; 65 ± 3 yr) males matched for body surface area. We also studied a group of trained middle-aged males (n = 10; 49 ± 5 yr) matched for body surface area with all groups and for aerobic fitness with the young group. Participants performed intermittent aerobic exercise (30-min exercise bouts separated by 15-min rest) in the heat (40°C and 15% relative humidity) at progressively greater fixed rates of heat production equal to 300 (Ex1), 400 (Ex2), and 500 (Ex3) W. Results showed that HE was significantly lower in middle-aged untrained (Ex2: 426 ± 34; and Ex3: 497 ± 17 W) and older (Ex2: 424 ± 38; and Ex3: 485 ± 44 W) compared with young (Ex2: 472 ± 42; and Ex3: 558 ± 51 W) and middle-aged trained (474 ± 21; Ex3: 552 ± 23 W) males at the end of Ex2 and Ex3 (P < 0.05). No differences among groups were observed during recovery. We conclude that impairments in HE in older and middle-aged untrained males occur at exercise-induced heat loads of ≥400 W when performed in a hot environment. These impairments in untrained middle-aged males can be minimized through regular aerobic exercise training.

Evidence for cyclooxygenase-dependent sweating in young males during intermittent exercise in the heat

Our recent work implicated nitric oxide (NO) in the control of sweating during intermittent exercise; however, it is unclear if cyclooxygenase (COX) is also involved. On separate days, ten healthy young (24 ± 4 years) males cycled in the heat (35°C). Two 30 min exercise bouts were performed at either a moderate (400 W, moderate heat load) or high (700 W, high heat load) rate of metabolic heat production and were followed by 20 and 40 min of recovery, respectively. Forearm sweating (ventilated capsule) was evaluated at four skin sites that were continuously perfused via intradermal microdialysis with: (1) lactated Ringer solution (Control), (2) 10 mm ketorolac (a non-selective COX inhibitor), (3) 10 mm N G-nitro-l -arginine methyl ester (l -NAME; a non-selective NO synthase inhibitor) or (4) a combination of 10 mm ketorolac + 10 mm l -NAME. During the last 5 min of the first exercise at moderate heat load, forearm sweating (mg min−1 cm−2) was equivalently reduced with ketorolac (0.54 ± 0.08), l -NAME (0.55 ± 0.07) and ketorolac+l -NAME (0.56 ± 0.08) compared to Control (0.67 ± 0.06) (all P  < 0.05). Similar results were obtained for the second exercise at moderate heat load (all P  < 0.05). However, forearm sweating was similar between the four sites during exercise at high heat load and during recovery regardless of exercise intensity (all P  > 0.05). We show that (1) although both COX and NO modulate forearm sweating during intermittent exercise bouts in the heat at a moderate heat load, the effects are not additive, and (2) the contribution of both enzymes to forearm sweating is less evident during intermittent exercise when the heat load is high and during recovery.

Cyclooxygenase inhibition does not alter methacholine-induced sweating

Cholinergic agents (e.g., methacholine) induce cutaneous vasodilation and sweating. Reports indicate that either nitric oxide (NO), cyclooxygenase (COX), or both can contribute to cholinergic cutaneous vasodilation. Also, NO is reportedly involved in cholinergic sweating; however, whether COX contributes to cholinergic sweating is unclear. Forearm sweat rate (ventilated capsule) and cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC, laser-Doppler perfusion units/mean arterial pressure) were evaluated in 10 healthy young (24 ± 4 yr) adults (7 men, 3 women) at four skin sites that were continuously perfused via intradermal microdialysis with 1) lactated Ringer (control), 2) 10 mM ketorolac (a nonselective COX inhibitor), 3) 10 mM N(G)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME, a nonselective NO synthase inhibitor), or 4) a combination of 10 mM ketorolac + 10 mM l-NAME. At the four skin sites, methacholine was simultaneously infused in a dose-dependent manner (1, 10, 100, 1,000, 2,000 mM). Relative to the control site, forearm CVC was not influenced by ketorolac throughout the protocol (all P > 0.05), whereas l-NAME and ketorolac + l-NAME reduced forearm CVC at and above 10 mM methacholine (all P < 0.05). Conversely, there was no main effect of treatment site (P = 0.488) and no interaction of methacholine dose and treatment site (P = 0.711) on forearm sweating. Thus forearm sweating (in mg·min(-1)·cm(-2)) from baseline up to the maximal dose of methacholine was not different between the four sites (at 2,000 mM, control 0.50 ± 0.23, ketorolac 0.44 ± 0.23, l-NAME 0.51 ± 0.22, and ketorolac + l-NAME 0.51 ± 0.23). We show that both NO synthase and COX inhibition do not influence cholinergic sweating induced by 1-2,000 mM methacholine.

Mechanisms underlying the postexercise baroreceptor-mediated suppression of heat loss

Reports indicate that postexercise heat loss is modulated by baroreceptor input; however, the mechanisms remain unknown. We examined the time‐dependent involvement of adenosine receptors, noradrenergic transmitters, and nitric oxide (NO) in modulating baroreceptor‐mediated changes in postexercise heat loss. Eight males performed two 15‐min cycling bouts (85% VO_2max) each followed by a 45‐min recovery in the heat (35°C). Lower body positive (LBPP), negative (LBNP), or no (Control) pressure were applied in three separate sessions during the final 30‐min of each recovery. Four microdialysis fibres in the forearm skin were perfused with: (1) lactated Ringer's (Ringer's); (2) 4 mmol·L⁻¹ Theophylline (inhibits adenosine receptors); (3) 10 mmol·L⁻¹ Bretylium (inhibits noradrenergic transmitter release); or (4) 10 mmol·L⁻¹ l‐NAME (inhibits NO synthase). We measured cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC; percentage of maximum) calculated as perfusion units divided by mean arterial pressure, and local sweat rate. Compared to Control, LBPP did not influence CVC at l‐NAME, Theophylline or Bretylium during either recovery (P >0.07); however, CVC at Ringer's was increased by ~5‐8% throughout 30 min of LBPP during Recovery 1 (all P <0.02). In fact, CVC at Ringer's was similar to Theophylline and Bretylium during LBPP. Conversely, LBNP reduced CVC at all microdialysis sites by ~7–10% in the last 15 min of Recovery 2 (all P <0.05). Local sweat rate was similar at all treatment sites as a function of pressure condition (P >0.10). We show that baroreceptor input modulates postexercise CVC to some extent via adenosine receptors, noradrenergic vasoconstriction, and NO whereas no influence was observed for postexercise sweating.

To assess the mechanisms of the baroreceptor‐mediated suppression of cutaneous blood flow and sweating postexercise, eight young men performed two 15‐min bouts of cycling at 85% of their VO_2max each followed by 45 min of recovery during which positive, negative, or no pressure were applied to the lower limbs. Baroreceptors modulated cutaneous blood flow via nitric oxide (panel B), adenosine receptor (panel C), and noradrenergic vasoconstrictor (panel D) dependent mechanisms. On the other hand, baroreceptors were not shown to modulate postexercise sweating.
