Abstract
During the induction of the body's alert state, the sympathetic system modulates sensory modalities and fine-tunes peripheral organs for improved stimulus detection. We explored noradrenaline (NA)'s role in modulating signaling in vomeronasal sensory neurons (VSNs), responsible for detecting pheromones and other semiochemicals. In current-clamp recordings, NA increased the firing frequency in response to natural stimuli of responsive VSNs and induced spiking activity in previously unresponsive neurons. Current injections into VSNs showed an increase in firing frequency during NA application. Combining transcriptomic analysis, electrophysiology, Ca2+ imaging, and a pharmacological approach, we identified alpha 1 adrenergic receptors as crucial for NA-induced firing frequency increases in VSNs. Immunohistochemistry revealed catecholaminergic fibers in the vomeronasal sensory epithelium, suggesting localized NA release near VSNs. This study unveils NA as a key regulator of VSN signaling, shedding light on the intricate interplay between the sympathetic nervous system and chemosensory processing, advancing our understanding of sensory modulation.

Abstract
Zinc is an essential trace element, and its deficiency causes taste dysfunction. Zinc accumulates in zinc transporter (ZnT)3-expressing presynaptic vesicles in hippocampal neurons and acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. However, the distribution of zinc and its role as a signal transmitter in taste buds remain unknown. Therefore, we examined the distribution of zinc and expression profiles of ZnT3 in taste cells and evaluated zinc release from isolated taste cells upon taste stimuli. Taste cells with a spindle or pyriform morphology were revealed by staining with the fluorescent zinc dye ZnAF-2DA and autometallography in the taste buds of rat circumvallate papillae. Znt3 mRNA levels were detected in isolated taste buds. ZnT3-immunoreactivity was found in phospholipase-β2-immunopositive type II taste cells and aromatic amino acid decarboxylase-immunopositive type III cells but not in nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 2-immunopositive type I cells. Moreover, we examined zinc release from taste cells using human transient receptor potential A1-overexpressing HEK293 as zinc-sensor cells. These cells exhibited a clear response to isolated taste cells exposed to taste stimuli. However, pretreatment with magnesium-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, an extracellular zinc chelator - but not with zinc-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, used as a negative control - significantly decreased the response ratio of zinc-sensor cells. These findings suggest that taste cells release zinc to the intercellular area in response to taste stimuli and that zinc may affect signaling within taste buds.

Abstract
Taste perception is affected by various environmental factors. In the present study, we investigated the effects of visual and aromatic stimulations on stress responses and taste perception. Fourteen young healthy participants were assessed for stress levels and taste intensities under 5 different conditions: normal (no stimuli), watching an action scene, watching a forest scene, sniffing a rosemary aroma, and sniffing a lavender aroma. Compared to participants under the action scene condition, participants under the forest scene or under the rosemary aroma condition showed significantly lower stress levels. Furthermore, the forest scene condition significantly increased the saltiness intensity, whereas the rosemary aroma condition significantly increased the bitterness intensity. A positive or negative correlation was observed between the stress level and taste intensity of sourness and saltiness, respectively. These findings indicate that visual image and aroma have the potential to change taste perception as well as modulate stress conditions.

Abstract
CONTEXT A common complaint among oncology patients receiving chemotherapy is altered taste perception. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate for differences in common symptoms and stress levels in patients who reported taste changes. METHODS Patients were receiving chemotherapy for breast, gastrointestinal, gynecological, or lung cancer. Change in the way food tastes (CFT) was assessed using the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale before the patients' second or third cycle of chemotherapy. Valid and reliable instruments were used to assess for depressive symptoms, state and trait of anxiety, cognitive impairment, diurnal variations in fatigue and energy, sleep disturbance, and pain. Stress was assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale and the Impact of Events Scale-Revised. Multiple logistic regression was used to evaluate for risk factors associated with CFT. RESULTS Of the 1329 patients, 49.4% reported CFT. Patients in the CFT group reported higher levels of depression, anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disturbance as well as higher levels of general and disease specific stress. Factors associated with CFT group included being non-White; receiving an antiemetic regimen that contained a neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist with two other antiemetics; having a lower functional status; higher levels of morning fatigue; and reporting higher scores on the hyperarousal subscale of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised. CONCLUSIONS This study provides new evidence on associations between taste changes and common co-occurring symptoms and stress in oncology patients receiving chemotherapy. Clinicians need to evaluate for taste changes in these patients because this symptom can effect patients' nutritional intake and quality of life.

Abstract
Chemical synapses between taste cells were first proposed based on electron microscopy of fish taste buds. Subsequently, researchers found considerable evidence for electrical coupling in fish, amphibian, and possibly mammalian taste buds. The development lingual slice and isolated cell preparations allowed detailed investigations of cell-cell interactions, both chemical and electrical, in taste buds. The identification of serotonin and ATP as taste neurotransmitters focused attention onto chemical synaptic interactions between taste cells and research on electrical coupling faded. Findings from Ca2+ imaging, electrophysiology, and molecular biology indicate that several neurotransmitters, including ATP, serotonin, GABA, acetylcholine, and norepinephrine, are secreted by taste cells and exert paracrine interactions in taste buds. Most work has been done on interactions between Type II and Type III taste cells. This brief review follows the trail of studies on cell-cell interactions in taste buds, from the initial ultrastructural observations to the most recent optogenetic manipulations.

Abstract
The five basic taste modalities, sweet, bitter, umami, salty and sour induce changes of Ca2+ levels, pH and/or membrane potential in taste cells of the tongue and/or in neurons that convey and decode gustatory signals to the brain. Optical biosensors, which can be either synthetic dyes or genetically encoded proteins whose fluorescence spectra depend on levels of Ca2+, pH or membrane potential, have been used in primary cells/tissues or in recombinant systems to study taste-related intra- and intercellular signaling mechanisms or to discover new ligands. Taste-evoked responses were measured by microscopy achieving high spatial and temporal resolution, while plate readers were employed for higher throughput screening. Here, these approaches making use of fluorescent optical biosensors to investigate specific taste-related questions or to screen new agonists/antagonists for the different taste modalities were reviewed systematically. Furthermore, in the context of recent developments in genetically encoded sensors, 3D cultures and imaging technologies, we propose new feasible approaches for studying taste physiology and for compound screening.

Abstract
An animal’s internal state is a critical parameter required for adaptation to a given environment. An important aspect of an animal’s internal state is the energy state that is adjusted to the needs of an animal by energy homeostasis. Glucose is one essential source of energy, especially for the brain. A shortage of glucose therefore triggers a complex response to restore the animal’s glucose supply. This counter-regulatory response to a glucose deficit includes metabolic responses like the mobilization of glucose from internal glucose stores and behavioral responses like increased foraging and a rapid intake of food. In mammals, the catecholamines adrenalin and noradrenalin take part in mediating these counter-regulatory responses to a glucose deficit. One candidate molecule that might play a role in these processes in insects is octopamine (OA). It is an invertebrate biogenic amine and has been suggested to derive from an ancestral pathway shared with adrenalin and noradrenalin. Thus, it could be hypothesized that OA plays a role in the insect’s counter-regulatory response to a glucose deficit. Here we tested this hypothesis in the honeybee (Apis mellifera), an insect that, as an adult, mainly feeds on carbohydrates and uses these as its main source of energy. We investigated alterations of the hemolymph glucose concentration, survival, and feeding behavior after starvation and examined the impact of OA on these processes in pharmacological experiments. We demonstrate an involvement of OA in these three processes in honeybees and conclude there is an involvement of OA in regulating a bee’s metabolic, physiological, and behavioral response following a phase of prolonged glucose deficit. Thus, OA in honeybees acts similarly to adrenalin and noradrenalin in mammals in regulating an animal’s counter-regulatory response.

Abstract
Each taste bud cell (TBC) type responds to a different taste. Previously, we showed that an unidentified cell type(s) functionally expresses a muscarinic acetylcholine (ACh) receptor subtype, M3, and we suggested the ACh-dependent modification of its taste responsiveness. In this study, we found that M3 is expressed by type III TBCs, which is the only cell type that possesses synaptic contacts with taste nerve fibers in taste buds. The application of ACh to the basolateral membrane of mouse fungiform TBCs in situ increased the intracellular Ca2+ concentration in 2.4 ± 1.4 cells per taste bud (mean ± SD, n = 14). After Ca2+ imaging, we supravitally labeled type II cells (phospholipase C β2 [PLCβ2]-immunoreactive cells) with Lucifer yellow CH (LY), a fluorescent dye and investigated the positional relationship between ACh-responding cells and LY-labeled cells. After fixation, the TBCs were immunohistostained to investigate the positional relationships between immunohistochemically classified cells and LY-labeled cells. The overlay of the two positional relationships obtained by superimposing the LY-labeled cells showed that all of the ACh-responding cells were type III cells (synaptosomal-associated protein 25 [SNAP-25]-immunoreactive cells). The ACh responses required no added Ca2+ in the bathing solution. The addition of 1 μM U73122, a phospholipase C inhibitor, decreased the magnitude of the ACh response, whereas that of 1 μM U73343, a negative control, had no effect. These results suggest that type III cells respond to ACh and release Ca2+ from intracellular stores. We also discuss the underlying mechanism of the Ca2+ response and the role of M3 in type III cells.

Abstract
The sense of taste conveys crucial information about the quality and nutritional value of foods before it is ingested. Taste signaling begins with taste cells via taste receptors in oral cavity. Activation of these receptors drives the transduction systems in taste receptor cells. Then particular transmitters are released from the taste cells and activate corresponding afferent gustatory nerve fibers. Recent studies have revealed that taste sensitivities are defined by distinct taste receptors and modulated by endogenous humoral factors in a specific group of taste cells. Such peripheral taste generations and modifications would directly influence intake of nutritive substances. This review will highlight current understanding of molecular mechanisms for taste reception, signal transduction in taste bud cells, transmission between taste cells and nerves, regeneration from taste stem cells, and modification by humoral factors at peripheral taste organs.

Abstract
Taste buds are peripheral chemosensory organs situated in the oral cavity. Each taste bud consists of a community of 50-100 cells that interact synaptically during gustatory stimulation. At least three distinct cell types are found in mammalian taste buds - Type I cells, Receptor (Type II) cells, and Presynaptic (Type III) cells. Type I cells appear to be glial-like cells. Receptor cells express G protein-coupled taste receptors for sweet, bitter, or umami compounds. Presynaptic cells transduce acid stimuli (sour taste). Cells that sense salt (NaCl) taste have not yet been confidently identified in terms of these cell types. During gustatory stimulation, taste bud cells secrete synaptic, autocrine, and paracrine transmitters. These transmitters include ATP, acetylcholine (ACh), serotonin (5-HT), norepinephrine (NE), and GABA. Glutamate is an efferent transmitter that stimulates Presynaptic cells to release 5-HT. This chapter discusses these transmitters, which cells release them, the postsynaptic targets for the transmitters, and how cell-cell communication shapes taste bud signaling via these transmitters.

Abstract
Mammalian taste buds use ATP as a neurotransmitter. Taste Receptor (type II) cells secrete ATP via gap junction hemichannels into the narrow extracellular spaces within a taste bud. This ATP excites primary sensory afferent fibers and also stimulates neighboring taste bud cells. Here we show that extracellular ATP is enzymatically degraded to adenosine within mouse vallate taste buds and that this nucleoside acts as an autocrine neuromodulator to selectively enhance sweet taste. In Receptor cells in a lingual slice preparation, Ca(2+) mobilization evoked by focally applied artificial sweeteners was significantly enhanced by adenosine (50 μM). Adenosine had no effect on bitter or umami taste responses, and the nucleoside did not affect Presynaptic (type III) taste cells. We also used biosensor cells to measure transmitter release from isolated taste buds. Adenosine (5 μM) enhanced ATP release evoked by sweet but not bitter taste stimuli. Using single-cell reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR on isolated vallate taste cells, we show that many Receptor cells express the adenosine receptor, Adora2b, while Presynaptic (type III) and Glial-like (type I) cells seldom do. Furthermore, Adora2b receptors are significantly associated with expression of the sweet taste receptor subunit, Tas1r2. Adenosine is generated during taste stimulation mainly by the action of the ecto-5'-nucleotidase, NT5E, and to a lesser extent, prostatic acid phosphatase. Both these ecto-nucleotidases are expressed by Presynaptic cells, as shown by single-cell RT-PCR, enzyme histochemistry, and immunofluorescence. Our findings suggest that ATP released during taste reception is degraded to adenosine to exert positive modulation particularly on sweet taste.

Abstract
Mammalian taste buds use ATP as a neurotransmitter. Taste Receptor (type II) cells secrete ATP via gap junction hemichannels into the narrow extracellular spaces within a taste bud. This ATP excites primary sensory afferent fibers and also stimulates neighboring taste bud cells. Here we show that extracellular ATP is enzymatically degraded to adenosine within mouse vallate taste buds and that this nucleoside acts as an autocrine neuromodulator to selectively enhance sweet taste. In Receptor cells in a lingual slice preparation, Ca(2+) mobilization evoked by focally applied artificial sweeteners was significantly enhanced by adenosine (50 μM). Adenosine had no effect on bitter or umami taste responses, and the nucleoside did not affect Presynaptic (type III) taste cells. We also used biosensor cells to measure transmitter release from isolated taste buds. Adenosine (5 μM) enhanced ATP release evoked by sweet but not bitter taste stimuli. Using single-cell reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR on isolated vallate taste cells, we show that many Receptor cells express the adenosine receptor, Adora2b, while Presynaptic (type III) and Glial-like (type I) cells seldom do. Furthermore, Adora2b receptors are significantly associated with expression of the sweet taste receptor subunit, Tas1r2. Adenosine is generated during taste stimulation mainly by the action of the ecto-5'-nucleotidase, NT5E, and to a lesser extent, prostatic acid phosphatase. Both these ecto-nucleotidases are expressed by Presynaptic cells, as shown by single-cell RT-PCR, enzyme histochemistry, and immunofluorescence. Our findings suggest that ATP released during taste reception is degraded to adenosine to exert positive modulation particularly on sweet taste.

Abstract
Taste buds signal the presence of chemical stimuli in the oral cavity to the central nervous system using both early transduction mechanisms, which allow single cells to be depolarized via receptor-mediated signaling pathways, and late transduction mechanisms, which involve extensive cell-to-cell communication among the cells in the bud. The latter mechanisms, which involve a large number of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, are less well understood. Among neurotransmitters, multiple lines of evidence suggest that norepinephrine plays a yet unknown role in the taste bud. This study investigated the expression pattern of adrenergic receptors in the rat posterior taste bud. Expression of alpha1A, alpha1B, alpha1D, alpha2A, alpha2B, alpha2C, beta1, and the beta2 adrenoceptor subtypes was observed in taste buds using RT-PCR and immunocytochemical techniques. Taste buds also expressed the biosynthetic enzyme for norepinephrine, dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DbetaH), as well as the norepinephrine transporter. Further, expression of the epinephrine synthetic enzyme, phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT), was observed suggesting a possible role for this transmitter in the bud. Phenotyping adrenoceptor expression patterns with double labeling experiments to gustducin, synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25), and neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) suggests they are prominently expressed in subsets of cells known to express taste receptor molecules but segregated from cells known to have synapses with the afferent nerve fiber. Alpha and beta adrenoceptors co-express with one another in unique patterns as observed with immunocytochemistry and single cell reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). These data suggest that single cells express multiple adrenergic receptors and that adrenergic signaling may be particularly important in bitter, sweet, and umami taste qualities. In summary, adrenergic signaling in the taste bud occurs through complex pathways that include presynaptic and postsynaptic receptors and likely play modulatory roles in processing of gustatory information similar to other peripheral sensory systems such as the retina, cochlea, and olfactory bulb.

Abstract
Glutamate-induced cobalt uptake reveals that non-NMDA glutamate receptors (GluRs) are present in rat taste bud cells. Previous studies involving glutamate induced cobalt staining suggest this uptake mainly occurs via kainate type GluRs. It is not known which of the 4 types of taste bud cells express subunits of kainate GluR. Circumvallate and foliate papillae of Sprague-Dawley rats (45~60 days old) were used to search for the mRNAs of subunits of non-NMDA GluRs using RT-PCR with specific primers for GluR1-7, KA1 and KA2. We also performed RT-PCR for GluR5, KA1, PLCbeta2, and NCAM/SNAP 25 in isolated single cells from taste buds. Taste epithelium, including circumvallate or foliate papilla, express mRNAs of GluR5 and KA1. However, non-taste tongue epithelium expresses no subunits of non-NMDA GluRs. Isolated single cell RT-PCR reveals that the mRNAs of GluR5 and KA1 are preferentially expressed in Type II and Type III cells over Type I cells.

Abstract
The evolving view of the taste bud increasingly suggests that it operates as a complex signal processing unit. A number of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides and their corresponding receptors are now known to be expressed in subsets of taste receptor cells in the mammalian bud. These expression patterns set up hard-wired cell-to-cell communication pathways whose exact physiological roles still remain obscure. As occurs in other cellular systems, it is likely that neuropeptides are co-expressed with neurotransmitters and function as neuromodulators. Several neuropeptides have been identified in taste receptor cells including cholecystokinin (CCK), neuropeptide Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). Of these, CCK and NPY are the best studied. These two peptides are co-expressed in the same presynaptic cells; however, their postsynaptic actions are both divergent and antagonistic. CCK and its receptor, the CCK-1 subtype, are expressed in the same subset of taste receptor cells and the autocrine activation of these cells produces a number of excitatory physiological actions. Further, most of these cells are responsive to bitter stimuli. On the other hand, NPY and its receptor, the NPY-1 subtype, are expressed in different cells. NPY, acting in a paracrine fashion on NPY-1 receptors, results in inhibitory actions on the cell. Preliminary evidence suggests the NPY-1 receptor expressing cell co-expresses T1R3, a member of the T1R family of G-protein coupled receptors thought to be important in detection of sweet and umami stimuli. Thus the neuropeptide expressing cells co-express CCK, NPY, and CCK-1 receptor. Neuropeptides released from these cells during bitter stimulation may work in concert to both modulate the excitation of bitter-sensitive taste receptor cells while concurrently inhibiting sweet-sensitive cells. This modulatory process is similar to the phenomenon of lateral inhibition that occurs in other sensory systems.

Abstract
Recent advances have underscored cell-to-cell communication as an important component of the operation of taste buds with individual taste receptor cells (TRCs) communicating with one another by means of a number of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, although functional roles are not yet understood. Here, we characterize the presence, distribution pattern, phenotype, and functional consequences of a previously undescribed inhibitory route within the taste bud mediated by the classic neurotransmitter GABA and its receptors. By using immunocytochemistry, subsets of TRCs within rat taste buds were identified as expressing GABA, and its synthetic enzyme glutamate decarboxylase (GAD). GAD expression was verified with Western blotting. Immunofluorescent studies revealed complex coexpression patterns of GAD with the TRC protein markers gustducin, neural cell adhesion molecule, protein gene product 9.5, and synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 kDa that collectively outline hardwired signaling pathways of GABAergic TRCs. RT-PCR and immunocytochemistry demonstrated that both GABA(A) and GABA(B) receptors are expressed in the taste bud. The later was observed in a subset TRCs paracrine to GAD-expressing TRCs. Physiological effects of GABA were examined by patch clamp recordings. GABA and the GABA(A) agonists muscimol and isoguvacine enhanced isolated chloride currents in a dose-dependent manner. Also, GABA and the GABA(B) agonist baclofen both elicited increases of the inwardly rectifying potassium currents that could be blocked by the GABA(B) receptor antagonist CGP 35348 and the G protein blocker GDP-betaS. Collectively, these data suggest that GABAergic TRCs are able to shape the final chemosensory output of the bud by means of processes of cell-to-cell modulation.

Abstract
The second messenger, 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), is known to be modulated in taste buds following exposure to gustatory and other stimuli. Which taste cell type(s) (Type I/glial-like cells, Type II/receptor cells, or Type III/presynaptic cells) undergo taste-evoked changes of cAMP and what the functional consequences of such changes are remain unknown. Using Fura-2 imaging of isolated mouse vallate taste cells, we explored how elevating cAMP alters Ca(2+) levels in identified taste cells. Stimulating taste buds with forskolin (Fsk; 1 microm) + isobutylmethylxanthine (IBMX; 100 microm), which elevates cellular cAMP, triggered Ca(2+) transients in 38% of presynaptic cells (n = 128). We used transgenic GAD-GFP mice to show that cAMP-triggered Ca(2+) responses occur only in the subset of presynaptic cells that lack glutamic acid decarboxylase 67 (GAD). We never observed cAMP-stimulated responses in receptor cells, glial-like cells or GAD-expressing presynaptic cells. The response to cAMP was blocked by the protein kinase A inhibitor H89 and by removing extracellular Ca(2+). Thus, the response to elevated cAMP is a PKA-dependent influx of Ca(2+). This Ca(2+) influx was blocked by nifedipine (an inhibitor of L-type voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels) but was unperturbed by omega-agatoxin IVA and omega-conotoxin GVIA (P/Q-type and N-type channel inhibitors, respectively). Single-cell RT-PCR on functionally identified presynaptic cells from GAD-GFP mice confirmed the pharmacological analyses: Ca(v)1.2 (an L-type subunit) is expressed in cells that display cAMP-triggered Ca(2+) influx, while Ca(v)2.1 (a P/Q subunit) is expressed in all presynaptic cells, and underlies depolarization-triggered Ca(2+) influx. Collectively, these data demonstrate cross-talk between cAMP and Ca(2+) signalling in a subclass of taste cells that form synapses with gustatory fibres and may integrate tastant-evoked signals.

Abstract
ATP and serotonin (5-HT) are neurotransmitters secreted from taste bud receptor (type II) and presynaptic (type III) cells, respectively. Norepinephrine (NE) has also been proposed to be a neurotransmitter or paracrine hormone in taste buds. Yet, to date, the specific stimulus for NE release in taste buds is not well understood, and the identity of the taste cells that secrete NE is not known. Chinese hamster ovary cells were transfected with alpha(1A) adrenoceptors and loaded with fura-2 ("biosensors") to detect NE secreted from isolated mouse taste buds and taste cells. Biosensors responded to low concentrations of NE (>or=10 nm) with a reliable fura-2 signal. NE biosensors did not respond to stimulation with KCl or taste compounds. However, we recorded robust responses from NE biosensors when they were positioned against mouse circumvallate taste buds and the taste buds were stimulated with KCl (50 mm) or a mixture of taste compounds (cycloheximide, 10 microm; saccharin, 2 mm; denatonium, 1 mm; SC45647, 100 microm). NE biosensor responses evoked by stimulating taste buds were reversibly blocked by prazosin, an alpha(1A) receptor antagonist. Together, these findings indicate that taste bud cells secrete NE when they are stimulated. We isolated individual taste bud cells to identify the origin of NE release. NE was secreted only from presynaptic (type III) taste cells and not receptor (type II) cells. Stimulus-evoked NE release depended on Ca(2+) in the bathing medium. Using dual biosensors (sensitive to 5-HT and NE), we found all presynaptic cells secrete 5-HT and 33% corelease NE with 5-HT.

Abstract
Neuroactive substances such as serotonin and other monoamines have been suggested to be involved in the transmission of gustatory signals from taste bud cells to afferent fibers. Lampreys are the earliest vertebrates that possess taste buds, although these differ in structure from taste buds in jawed vertebrates, and their neurochemistry remains unknown. We used immunofluorescence methods with antibodies raised against serotonin, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), calretinin, and acetylated alpha-tubulin to characterize the neurochemistry and innervation of taste buds in the sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus L. For localization of proliferative cells in taste buds we used bromodeoxyuridine labeling and proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry. Results with both markers indicate that proliferating cells are restricted to a few basal cells and that almost all cells in taste buds are nonproliferating. A large number of serotonin-, calretinin-, and CGRP-immunoreactive bi-ciliated cells were revealed in lamprey taste buds. This suggests that serotonin participates in the transmission of gustatory signals and indicates that this substance appeared early on in vertebrate evolution. The basal surface of the bi-ciliated taste bud cells was contacted by tubulin-immunoreactive fibers. Some of the fibers surrounding the taste bud were calretinin immunoreactive. Lamprey taste bud cells or afferent fibers did not exhibit TH, GABA, glutamate, or NPY immunoreactivity, which suggests that expression of these substances evolved in taste buds of some gnathostomes lines after the separation of gnathostomes and lampreys.

Abstract
In the soft palate, tongue, pharynx and larynx surrounding the oral region, taste buds are present, allowing the sensation of taste. On the tongue surface, 3 kinds of papillae are present: fungiform, foliate, and circumvallate. Approximately 5,000 taste buds cover the surface of the human tongue, with about 30% fungiform, 30% foliate and 40% circumvallate papillae. Each taste bud comprises 4 kinds of cells, namely high dark (type I), low light (type II), and intermediate (type III) cells in electron density and Merkel-like taste basal cells (type IV) located at a distance from taste pores. Type II cells sense taste stimuli and type III cells transmit taste signals to sensory afferent nerve fibers. However, type I and type IV cells are not considered to possess obvious taste functions. Synaptic interactions that mediate communication in taste cells provide signal outputs to primary afferent fibers. In the study of taste bud cells, molecular functional techniques using single cells have recently been applied. Serotonin (5-HT) plays a role in cell-to-cell transmission of taste signals. ATP fills the criterion of a neurotransmitter that activates receptors of taste nerve fibers. Findings on 5-HT and ATP suggest that various different transmitters and receptors are present in taste buds. However, no firm evidence for taste-evoked release from type III cells has been identified, except for 5-HT and ATP. These results suggest that different transmitters and receptors may not be present in taste buds. Accordingly, an understanding of how transmitters might function remains elusive.

Abstract
Taste bud cells (TBCs) express various neurotransmitter receptors assumed to facilitate or modify taste information processing within taste buds. We investigated the functional expression of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) subtypes, M1-M5, in mouse fungiform TBCs. ACh applied to the basolateral membrane of TBCs elevates the intracellular Ca(2+) level in a concentration-dependent manner with the 50% effective concentration (EC(50)) of 0.6 microM. The Ca(2+) responses occur in the absence of extracellular Ca(2+) and are inhibited by atropine, a selective antagonist against mAChRs. The order of 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) examined with a series of antagonists selective to mAChR subtypes shows the expression of M3 on TBCs. Perforated whole-cell voltage clamp studies show that 1 microM ACh blocks an outwardly rectifying current and that 100 nM atropine reverses the block. Reverse transcriptase-mediated polymerase chain reaction studies suggest the expression of M3 but not the other mAChR subtypes. Immunohistochemical studies show that phospholipase Cbeta-immunoreactive TBCs and synaptosome-associated protein of 25 kDa-immunoreactive nerve endings are immunoreactive to a transporter that packs ACh molecules into synaptic vesicles (vesicular acetylcholine transporter). These results show that M3 occurs on a few fungiform TBCs and suggest that a few nerve endings, and probably a few TBCs, release ACh by exocytosis. The role of ACh in taste responses is discussed.

Neurotransmitter receptors on taste bud cells (TBCs) and taste nerve fibres are likely to contribute to taste transduction by mediating the interaction among TBCs and that between TBCs and taste nerve fibres. We investigated the functional expression of P2 receptor subtypes on TBCs of mouse fungiform papillae. Electrophysiological studies showed that 100 microm ATP applied to their basolateral membranes either depolarized or hyperpolarized a few cells per taste bud. Ca(2+) imaging showed that similarly applied 1 mum ATP, 30 microm BzATP (a P2X(7) agonist), or 1 microm 2MeSATP (a P2Y(1) and P2Y(11) agonist) increased intracellular Ca(2+) concentration, but 100 microm UTP (a P2Y(2) and P2Y(4) agonist) and alpha,beta-meATP (a P2X agonist except for P2X(2), P2X(4) and P2X(7)) did not. RT-PCR suggested the expression of P2X(2), P2X(4), P2X(7), P2Y(1), P2Y(13) and P2Y(14) among the seven P2X subtypes and seven P2Y subtypes examined. Immunohistostaining confirmed the expression of P2X(2). The exposure of the basolateral membranes to 3 mm ATP for 30 min caused the uptake of Lucifer Yellow CH in a few TBCs per taste bud. This was antagonized by 100 microm PPADS (a non-selective P2 blocker) and 1 microm KN-62 (a P2X(7) blocker). These results showed for the first time the functional expression of P2X(2) and P2X(7) on TBCs. The roles of P2 receptor subtypes in the taste transduction, and the renewal of TBCs, are discussed.

Abstract
We immunohistochemically examined the existence of dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH), a noradrenalin (NA)-synthesizing enzyme from dopamine, in the taste disc of frog, Rana catesbeiana. DBH-like immunoreactive cells were located in the intermediate layer in the taste disc; the cells showed an apical process reaching the surface of the disc and one or several basal processes. Cells with a thick apical process and those with a thin apical process were both immunoreactive: these cells corresponded to type II and III receptor cells of the frog taste disc. Immunoreactive granules were observed in the cytoplasm of those cells. In the frog taste disc, only type III cells are reported to have afferent synapses with the nerve via basal processes but those basal processes have not been reported in type II cells. In the present study, we found that type II-like cells possessed a long basal process extending toward the basal lamina. Mucous (type Ia) cells, wing (type Ib) cells, and glia-like sustentacular (type Ic) cells were all immunohistochemically unreactive. The present observations support the argument that NA (or adrenalin) may work as a chemical transmitter in the frog taste organ.

Abstract
Although adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is known to be an afferent transmitter in the peripheral taste system, serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) have also been proposed as candidate neurotransmitters and have been detected immunocytochemically in mammalian taste cells. To understand the significance of biogenic amines in taste, we evaluated the ability of taste cells to synthesize, transport, and package 5-HT and NE. We show by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and immunofluorescence microscopy that the enzymes for 5-HT synthesis, tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) and aromatic amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) are expressed in taste cells. In contrast, enzymes necessary for NE synthesis, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) are absent. Both TH and DBH are expressed in nerve fibers that penetrate taste buds. Taste buds also robustly express plasma membrane transporters for 5-HT and NE. Within the taste bud NET, a specific NE transporter, is expressed in some presynaptic (type III) and some glial-like (type I) cells but not in receptor (type II) cells. By using enzyme immunoassay, we show uptake of NE, probably through NET in taste epithelium. Proteins involved in inactivating and packaging NE, including catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A), vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT1,2) and chromogranin A (ChrgA), are also expressed in taste buds. Within the taste bud, ChrgA is found only in presynaptic cells and may account for dense-cored vesicles previously seen in some taste cells. In summary, we postulate that aminergic presynaptic taste cells synthesize only 5-HT, whereas NE (perhaps secreted by sympathetic fibers) may be concentrated and repackaged for secretion.

Abstract
Circumstances in which serotonin (5-HT) and noradrenaline (NA) are altered, such as in anxiety or depression, are associated with taste disturbances, indicating the importance of these transmitters in the determination of taste thresholds in health and disease. In this study, we show for the first time that human taste thresholds are plastic and are lowered by modulation of systemic monoamines. Measurement of taste function in healthy humans before and after a 5-HT reuptake inhibitor, NA reuptake inhibitor, or placebo showed that enhancing 5-HT significantly reduced the sucrose taste threshold by 27% and the quinine taste threshold by 53%. In contrast, enhancing NA significantly reduced bitter taste threshold by 39% and sour threshold by 22%. In addition, the anxiety level was positively correlated with bitter and salt taste thresholds. We show that 5-HT and NA participate in setting taste thresholds, that human taste in normal healthy subjects is plastic, and that modulation of these neurotransmitters has distinct effects on different taste modalities. We present a model to explain these findings. In addition, we show that the general anxiety level is directly related to taste perception, suggesting that altered taste and appetite seen in affective disorders may reflect an actual change in the gustatory system.

Abstract
Like with many sensory abilities a reduction of taste and smell occurs during aging. Since there are hints to an additional reduction in dementing diseases, we assessed 52 patients, 26 women and 26 men, who were presented to a memory clinic, using the Sniffin' Sticks, Whole Mouth and Taste Strip Tests. While smoking, alcohol consumption, intake of drugs and sex exerted only minor impact, age and the severity of cognitive impairment were of major importance. There was a moderate but significant correlation between the severity of dementia, taste and smell, even if the age effect was partialled out. Notably, patients with Parkinson syndrome showed worse taste and smell abilities than those without. Here the differences were indeed marked enough to play a possible role in making the diagnosis. This exploratory study confirms a mild reduction of gustatory function in dementing diseases over and beyond that of normal aging which--in addition to a reduction of smell--seems to be especially marked in Parkinson syndromes.

Abstract
Taste bud cells communicate with sensory afferent fibers and may also exchange information with adjacent cells. Indeed, communication between taste cells via conventional and/or novel synaptic interactions may occur prior to signal output to primary afferent fibers. This review discusses synaptic processing in taste buds and summarizes results showing that it is now possible to measure real-time release of synaptic transmitters during taste stimulation using cellular biosensors. There is strong evidence that serotonin and ATP play a role in cell-to-cell signaling and sensory output in the gustatory end organs.

Abstract
Taste buds are aggregates of 50-100 cells, only a fraction of which express genes for taste receptors and intracellular signaling proteins. We combined functional calcium imaging with single-cell molecular profiling to demonstrate the existence of two distinct cell types in mouse taste buds. Calcium imaging revealed that isolated taste cells responded with a transient elevation of cytoplasmic Ca2+ to either tastants or depolarization with KCl, but never both. Using single-cell reverse transcription (RT)-PCR, we show that individual taste cells express either phospholipase C beta2 (PLCbeta2) (an essential taste transduction effector) or synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP25) (a key component of calcium-triggered transmitter exocytosis). The two functional classes revealed by calcium imaging mapped onto the two gene expression classes determined by single-cell RT-PCR. Specifically, cells responding to tastants expressed PLCbeta2, whereas cells responding to KCl depolarization expressed SNAP25. We demonstrate this by two methods: first, through sequential calcium imaging and single-cell RT-PCR; second, by performing calcium imaging on taste buds in slices from transgenic mice in which PLCbeta2-expressing taste cells are labeled with green fluorescent protein. To evaluate the significance of the SNAP25-expressing cells, we used RNA amplification from single cells, followed by RT-PCR. We show that SNAP25-positive cells also express typical presynaptic proteins, including a voltage-gated calcium channel (alpha1A), neural cell adhesion molecule, synapsin-II, and the neurotransmitter-synthesizing enzymes glutamic acid decarboxylase and aromatic amino acid decarboxylase. No synaptic markers were detected in PLCbeta2 cells by either amplified RNA profiling or by immunocytochemistry. These data demonstrate the existence of at least two molecularly distinct functional classes of taste cells: receptor cells and synapse-forming cells.

Abstract
The effects of noradrenaline (NA) and its analogs on subfornical organ (SFO) neurons in rat slice preparations were investigated by using whole cell patch-clamp recording. In the current-clamp mode, the application of NA at 10-100 microM produced membrane depolarization (63%, 17 responsive neurons/27 neurons tested) and hyperpolarization (22%, 6/27 neurons). In the voltage-clamp mode, NA application at 1-100 microM produced inward currents (69%, 42/61 neurons) and outward currents (23%, 14/61 neurons). These currents remained in the presence of TTX or both glutamate and GABA receptor antagonists. In most of the neurons (25/31 neurons) showing inward currents in the presence of NA, the membrane conductance was not changed by voltage ramps or hyperpolarizing pulse stimulation. Similar responses were obtained by the application of the alpha1-agonist phenylephrine. The phenylephrine-induced inward currents were inhibited by the alpha1-antagonist prazosin. The alpha2-agonist clonidine decreased the frequency of spontaneous GABAergic inhibitory postsynaptic currents (4/10 neurons). In addition, RT-PCR assay and immunohistochemical staining showed the existence of alpha1-adrenoceptors in the SFO. The results suggest that SFO neurons in rats are activated postsynaptically through alpha1-adrenoceptors and that the activation is enhanced by suppressing GABAergic inhibitory synaptic inputs through presynaptic alpha2-adrenoceptors.

Abstract
Recent studies have suggested that neuropeptides could play previously unrecognized functional roles in peripheral gustation. To date, two peptides, cholecystokinin and vasoactive intestinal peptide, have been localized to subsets of taste-bud (TB) cells (TBC) and one, cholecystokinin, has been demonstrated to produce excitatory physiological actions. This study extends our knowledge of neuropeptides in TBC in three significant ways. First, using techniques of immunocytochemistry and RT-PCR, evidence is presented for the expression of a third peptide, neuropeptide Y (NPY). Like other peptide expression patterns, NPY expression is circumscribed to a subset of cells within the taste bud. Second, using physiological studies, we demonstrate that NPY specifically enhances an inwardly rectifying potassium current via NPY-Y1 receptors. This action is antagonistic to the previously demonstrated inhibitory effect exerted by cholecystokinin on the same current, thus providing important clues to their signaling roles in the TB. Third, using the technique of double-labeled fluorescent immunocytochemistry, the relationship of three subsets of neuropeptide-expressing TB cells to one another was examined. Remarkably, NPY expressions, although fewer in number than either the cholecystokinin or vasoactive intestinal peptide subsets, overlapped 100% with either peptide. Collectively, these three observations transform previously suggestive roles of neuromodulation by peptides in TB cells to more concrete signaling pathways. The extensive colocalization of these peptides suggests they may be subject to similar presynaptic influences of release yet have antagonistic postsynaptic actions. The convergence or divergence of these postsynaptic actions awaits further investigation.

Abstract
CHO cells transfected with high-affinity 5HT receptors were used to detect and identify the release of serotonin from taste buds. Taste cells release 5HT when depolarized or when stimulated with bitter, sweet, or sour tastants. Sour- and depolarization-evoked release of 5HT from taste buds is triggered by Ca2+ influx from the extracellular fluid. In contrast, bitter- and sweet-evoked release of 5HT is triggered by Ca2+ derived from intracellular stores.

Abstract
Taste receptor cells are primary sensory receptors utilized by the nervous system to detect the presence of gustatory stimuli in the oral cavity. These cells are particularly heterogeneous and may be divided into various subtypes based on morphological, histochemical, or physiological criteria. One example is the heterogeneous expression of neuropeptides, such as cholecystokinin and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide. These peptides are hypothesized to participate in the transduction processes. To pursue examination of this hypothesis, this study explored the relationship of peptide expression with two important and mostly non-overlapping transductive elements--the taste-specific G protein gustducin, involved in bitter and sweet transduction cascades, and the seven transmembrane taste receptor T1R2, hypothesized to respond to sweet compounds. Double labeling experiments were performed on taste buds of the posterior rat tongue combining immunocytochemistry for peptide expression and in situ hybridization experiments for either gustducin or T1R2 expression. Additionally, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-expression in posterior taste receptor cells was confirmed using the technique of RT-PCR. More than half (56%) of the CCK-expressing taste receptor cells co-expressed alpha-gustducin mRNA whereas far fewer (15%) co-expressed T1R2 mRNA. A majority of VIP-expressing taste receptor cells co-expressed alpha-gustducin mRNA (60%) whereas only 19% of these cells co-expressed T1R2 mRNA. More remarkable was the observation that these two peptides displayed almost identical expression patterns with these signal transduction molecules, suggesting that peptides are not randomly expressed with relation to signal transduction molecules. This observation supports the hypothesis that peptides may play roles in transduction. Further physiological exploration will be required to elucidate the nature of these roles.

Abstract
In a previous study, we characterized the gustatory system of a New World monkey the common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus jacchus, with electrophysiological techniques by recording from taste fibers of the chorda tympani proper (CT) and glossopharyngeal (NG) nerves. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified three clusters of taste fibers: S fibers, responding predominantly to sweeteners, Q fibers, responding predominantly to bitter stimuli, and H fibers, responding predominantly to acids. In this study, we employed two behavioral techniques, the two-bottle preference (TBP) and conditioned taste aversion (CTA), to study the taste of the compounds used in the previous electrophysiological study. The results showed that compounds that did not stimulate any taste fibers were neither preferred nor rejected. Compounds that activated only S fibers were always preferred over water. When aversion to sucrose was created by the CTA method, these compounds were rejected. Compounds that activated Q fibers were rejected and consumed less than water. We studied the relationship between intake and net response from S and Q fibers in the CT and NG nerves. Intake was measured as a preference ratio in TBP test. The net response was defined as: (SCT + SNG) − (QCT + QNG), where SCT + SNG denotes the sum of the responses in S fibers of the CT and NG nerves. Similarly, QCT + QNG represents the sum of the responses in Q fibers of the CT and NG nerves. The relationship between intake and the Net response was linear with a Pearson correlation coefficient 0.85. This study supports our hypothesis that intake is influenced by S and Q fibers, where S fibers serve as a hedonically positive input and Q fibers as a hedonically negative input.

Abstract
Recent advances in peripheral taste physiology now suggest that the classic linear view of information processing within the taste bud is inadequate and that paracrine processing, although undemonstrated, may be an essential feature of peripheral gustatory transduction. Taste receptor cells (TRCs) express multiple neurotransmitters of unknown function that could potentially participate in a paracrine role. Serotonin is expressed in a subset of TRCs with afferent synapses; additionally, TRCs respond physiologically to serotonin. This study explored the expression and cellular localization of serotonin receptor subtypes in TRCs as a possible route of paracrine communication. RT-PCR was performed on RNA extracted from rat posterior taste buds with 14 primer sets representing 5-HT1 through 5-HT7 receptor subtype families. Data suggest that 5-HT1A and 5-HT3 receptors are expressed in taste buds. Immunocytochemistry with a 5-HT1A-specific antibody demonstrated that subsets of TRCs were immunopositive for 5-HT1A. With the use of double-labeling, serotonin- and 5-HT1A-immunopositive cells were observed exclusively in nonoverlapping populations. On the other hand, 5-HT3-immunopositive taste receptor cells were not observed. This observation, combined with other data, suggests 5-HT3 is expressed in postsynaptic neural elements within the bud. We hypothesize that 5-HT release from TRCs activates postsynaptic 5-HT3 receptors on afferent nerve fibers and, via a paracrine route, inhibits neighboring TRCs via 5-HT1A receptors. The role of the 5-HT1A-expressing TRC within the taste bud remains to be explored.

The recent discovery that subsets of rat taste receptor cells (TRCs) express the peptide cholecystokinin (CCK) and that subsets of TRCs respond to CCK with altered potassium currents or elevated intracellular calcium via CCK-A receptor has lead to the hypothesis that CCK may play a novel signaling role within the taste bud, perhaps modifying tastant responses by co-transmission with a classic transmitter. To better understand this phenomenon, CCK-responsive TRCs were characterized for sensitivity to two bitter stimuli, quinine or caffeine, or to the neurotransmitter ACh using a ratiometric procedure with the calcium sensitive dye fura-2. In characterizing TRC responses to quinine, it was observed that quinine-induced elevations of intracellular calcium were not due to endogenous fluorescence of the quinine molecule. Most (60-70%) CCK-responsive cells were also sensitive to either bitter stimuli or to cholinergic stimulation. These data suggest that TRCs expressing CCK-receptors also express receptors to bitter stimuli and/or muscarinic receptors. They further support the notion of a putative modulatory role of CCK with convergence of multiple inputs occurring at the level of intracellular calcium.

Abstract
Evidence implicates a number of neuroactive substances and their receptors in mediating complex cell-to-cell communications in the taste bud. Recently, we found that ATP, a ubiquitous neurotransmitter/neuromodulator, mobilizes intracellular Ca2+ in taste cells by activating P2Y receptors. Here, P2Y receptor-cellular response coupling was characterized in detail using single cell ratio photometry and the inhibitory analysis. The sequence of underlying events was shown to include ATP-dependent activation of PLC, IP3 production, and IP3 receptor-mediated Ca2+ release followed by Ca2+ influx. Data obtained favor SOC channels rather than receptor-operated channels as a pathway for Ca2+ influx that accompanies Ca2+ release. Intracellular Ca2+ mobilized by ATP is apparently extruded by the plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase, while a contribution of the Na+/Ca2+ exchange and other mechanisms of Ca2+ clearance is negligible. Cyclic AMP-dependent phosphorylation is likely to control a gain of the phosphoinositide cascade involved in ATP transduction. ATP-responsive taste cells are abundant in circumvallate, foliate, and fungiform papillae. Taken together, our observations point to a putative role for ATP as a neurotransmitter operative in the taste bud.

Abstract
Despite extensive immunological characterization of the cells within taste buds, little is known about the functional significance of the different cell types. In this study, we use taste cells isolated from mouse vallate and foliate papillae to characterize voltage-gated currents in the three principal elongate types of taste cells: type I, II, and III. Cell types are identified by using antibodies to external epitopes [antigen H for type I cells, antigen A for type II cells, and neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) for type III cells]. In addition, we identify the subset of type II cells that contains alpha-gustducin, a G-protein involved in bitter transduction, by using transgenic mice expressing green fluorescent protein under the control of the gustducin promoter. Our results indicate that antigen H-immunoreactive (-IR) cells and many of the antigen A-IR cells have small voltage-gated inward Na(+) and outward K(+) currents but no voltage-gated Ca(2+) currents. In contrast, a subset of antigen A-IR cells and all NCAM-IR cells have large inward Na(+) and outward K(+) currents as well as voltage-gated Ca(2+) currents. Unexpectedly, all gustducin-expressing cells lacked voltage-gated Ca(2+) currents, suggesting that these cells use mechanisms other than classical synapses to communicate signals to the brain.

Abstract
The sense of taste plays a critical role in the life and nutritional status of organisms. During the last decade, several molecules involved in taste detection and transduction have been identified, providing a better understanding of the molecular physiology of taste receptor cells. However, a comprehensive catalogue of the taste receptor cell signaling machinery is still unavailable. We have recently described the occurrence of calcium signaling mechanisms in taste receptor cells via apparent store-operated channels and identified Trpm5, a novel candidate taste transduction element belonging to the mammalian family of transient receptor potential channels. Trpm5 is expressed in a tissue-restricted manner, with high levels in gustatory tissue. In taste cells, Trpm5 is co-expressed with taste-signaling molecules such as alpha-gustducin, Ggamma(13), phospholipase C beta(2) and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor type III. Biophysical studies of Trpm5 heterologously expressed in Xenopus oocytes and mammalian CHO-K1 cells indicate that it functions as a store-operated channel that mediates capacitative calcium entry. The role of store-operated channels and Trpm5 in capacitative calcium entry in taste receptor cells in response to bitter compounds is discussed.

Abstract
Gustatory perception arises not only from intracellular transduction cascades within taste receptor cells but also from cell-to-cell communication among the cells of the taste bud. This study presents novel data demonstrating that the brain-gut peptide cholecystokinin (CCK) is expressed in subsets of taste receptor cells, and that it may play a signaling role unknown previously within the taste bud. Immunocytochemistry revealed positively stained subsets of cells within taste buds throughout the oral cavity. These cells typically displayed round nuclei with full processes, similar to those classified as light cells. Peptide expression was verified using nested PCR on template cDNA derived from mRNA extracted from isolated posterior taste buds. Multiple physiological actions of cholecystokinin on taste receptor cells were observed. An outward potassium current, recorded with the patch-clamp technique, was inhibited by exogenous application of sulfated cholecystokinin octapeptide in a reversible and concentration-dependent manner. Pharmacological analysis suggests that this inhibition is mediated by CCK-A receptors and involves PKC phosphorylation. An inwardly rectifying potassium current, typically invariant to stimulation, was also inhibited by cholecystokinin. Additionally, exogenous cholecystokinin was effective in elevating intracellular calcium as measured by ratiometric techniques with the calcium-sensitive dye fura-2. Pharmacology similarly demonstrated that these calcium elevations were mediated by CCK-A receptors and were dependent on intracellular calcium stores. Collectively, these observations suggest a newly discovered role for peptide neuromodulation in the peripheral processing of taste information.
