Synergistic binding sites in a hybrid ultramicroporous material for one-step ethylene purification from ternary C2 hydrocarbon mixtures

Advancing Pore-Space-Partitioned Metal-Organic Frameworks with Isoreticular Cluster Concept

Trigonal planar M3(O/OH) trimers are among the most important clusters in inorganic chemistry and are the foundational features of multiple high-impact MOF platforms. Here we introduce a concept called isoreticular cluster series and demonstrate that M3(O/OH), as the first member of a supertrimer series, can be combined with a higher hierarchical member (double-deck trimer here) to advance isoreticular chemistry. We report here an isoreticular series of pore-space-partitioned MOFs called M3M6 pacs made from co-assembly between M3 single-deck trimer and M3x2 double-deck trimer. Important factors were identified on this multi-modular MOF platform to guide optimization of each module, which enables the phase selection of M3M6 pacs by overcoming the formation of previously-always-observed same-cluster phases. The new pacs materials exhibit high surface area and high uptake capacity for CO2 and small hydrocarbons, as well as selective adsorption properties relevant to separation of industrially important mixtures such as C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4. Furthermore, new M3M6 pacs materials show electrocatalytic properties with high activity.

Direct Ethylene Purification from a Four-Component Gas Mixture by a Microporous MOF with Aromatic Pore Surface and Carboxylates

The single-step purification of ethylene (C2H4) from a mixture of carbon dioxide (CO2), acetylene (C2H2), ethylene (C2H4), and ethane (C2H6) was achieved through MOF Compound-1, where the aromatic pore surface and carboxylates selectively recognized C2H6 and CO2, respectively, resulting in a reversal of the adsorption orders for both gases (C2H6 > C2H4 and CO2 > C2H4). Breakthrough testing verified that the C2H4 purification ability could be enhanced 2.6 times after adding impure CO2. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations demonstrate that there are interactions between CO2 and C2H6 molecules as well as between CO2 molecules themselves. These interactions contribute to the enhancement of the C2H4 purification ability upon the addition of CO2 and the increased adsorption of CO2.

Metal-Organic Framework Featuring Cubic Caged Structures for One-Step Ethylene Purification from Ethylene/Ethane Mixtures

Separation of C2H6/C2H4 mixtures is of significant importance in the chemical industry but remains a challenge due to the physicochemical similarities of C2H6 and C2H4. Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF), [Zn4(μ4-O)(PCTF)3]n (Zn-PCTF) (PCTF2-= 5-trifluoromethyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylic), is provided for the removal of C2H6 from C2H6/C2H4 mixtures. Zn-PCTF displays a three-dimensional framework featuring one-dimensional pore channels with periodic bottleneck segments. The well-balanced C2H6 adsorption capacity (79.0 cm3 g-1 at 298 K) and C2H6/C2H4 selectivity (1.8) for Zn-PCTF under ambient conditions boost Zn-PCTF with highly promising potentials for efficient purification of C2H4 from C2H6/C2H4 mixtures, which is verified by the dynamic column breakthrough experiments. The well-matched caged pores and suitable pore chemistry (particularly the presence of abundant Lewis base sites (N, O, and F) on the pore surfaces) for C2H6 account for the high-performance C2H6/C2H4 separation of Zn-PCTF unveiled by computational simulations.

Topology Reconfiguration of Anion-Pillared Metal-Organic Framework from Flexibility to Rigidity for Enhanced Acetylene Separation

Flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents commonly encounter limitations in removing trace impurities below gate-opening threshold pressures. Topology reconfiguration can fundamentally eliminate intrinsic structural flexibility, yet remains a formidable challenge and is rarely achieved in practical applications. Herein, a solvent-mediated approach is presented to regulate the flexible CuSnF6-dpds-sql (dpds = 4,4''-dipyridyldisulfide) with sql topology into rigid CuSnF6-dpds-cds with cds topology. Notably, the cds topology is unprecedented and first obtained in anion-pillared MOF materials. As a result, rigid CuSnF6-dpds-cds exhibits enhanced C2H2 adsorption capacity of 48.61 cm3 g-1 at 0.01 bar compared to flexible CuSnF6-dpds-sql (21.06 cm3 g-1). The topology transformation also facilitates the adsorption kinetics for C2H2, exhibiting a 6.5-fold enhanced diffusion time constant (D/r2) of 1.71 × 10-3 s-1 on CuSnF6-dpds-cds than that of CuSnF6-dpds-sql (2.64 × 10-4 s-1). Multiple computational simulations reveal the structural transformations and guest-host interactions in both adsorbents. Furthermore, dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrate that high-purity C2H4 (>99.996%) effluent with a productivity of 93.9 mmol g-1 can be directly collected from C2H2/C2H4 (1/99, v/v) gas-mixture in a single CuSnF6-dpds-cds column.

Systemic regulation of binding sites in porous coordination polymers for ethylene purification from ternary C2 hydrocarbons

The global demand for poly-grade ethylene (C2H4) is increasing annually. However, the energy-saving purification of this gas remains a major challenge due to the similarity in molecular properties among the ternary C2 hydrocarbons. To address this challenge, we report an approach of systematic tuning of the pore environment with organic sites (from -COOH to -CF3, then to -CH3) in porous coordination polymers (PCPs), of which NTU-73-CH3 shows remarkable capability for the direct production of poly-grade C2H4 from ternary C2 hydrocarbons under ambient conditions. In comparison, the precursor structure of NTU-73-COOH is unable to purify C2H4, while NTU-73-CF3 shows minimal ability to harvest C2H4. This is because the changed binding sites in the NTU-73-series not only eliminate the channel obstruction caused by the formation of gas clusters, but also enhance the interaction with acetylene (C2H2) and ethane (C2H6), as validated by in situ crystallographic and Raman analysis. Our findings, in particular the systematic tuning of the pore environment and the efficient C2H4 purification by NTU-73-CH3, provide a blueprint for the creation of advanced porous families that can handle desired tasks.

Optimizing Trace Acetylene Removal from Acetylene/Ethylene Mixture in a Flexible Metal-Organic Framework by Crystal Downsizing

Improving the gas separation performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by crystal downsizing is an important but often overlooked issue. Here, we report three different-sized flexible ZUL-520 MOFs (according to the crystal size from large to small, the three samples are, respectively, named ZUL-520-0, ZUL-520-1, and ZUL-520-2) with the same chemical structure for optimizing trace acetylene (C2H2) removal from acetylene/ethylene (C2H2/C2H4) mixture. The three differently sized activated ZUL-520 (denoted as ZUL-520a) exhibited almost identical C2H2 uptake of 4.8 mmol/g at 100 kPa, while the C2H2 uptake at 1 kPa increased with a downsizing crystal. The C2H2 uptake of activated ZUL-520-2 (denoted as ZUL-520-2a) at 1 kPa was ∼55% higher than that of activated ZUL-520-0 (denoted as ZUL-520-0a). The adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics validated that gas adsorptive separation is governed not only by adsorption thermodynamics but also by adsorption kinetics. In addition, all three different-sized ZUL-520a MOFs showed high C2H2/C2H4 selectivity. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations and dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) computations illustrated a plausible mechanism of C2H2 adsorption in MOFs. Importantly, breakthrough experiments demonstrated that ZUL-520a can effectively separate the C2H2/C2H4 (1/99, v/v) mixture and the C2H4 productivity obtained by ZUL-520-2a was much higher than that by ZUL-520-0a. Our work may provide an easy but powerful strategy for upgrading the performance of gas adsorptive separation in MOFs.

Efficient Ethane and Propane Separation from Natural Gas Using Heterometallic Metal-Organic Frameworks with Interpenetrated Structures

The development of efficient technology for natural gas separation in industrial processes has become imperative. In this regard, the exploration of novel and effective adsorbents has gained significant attention. One promising approach is the metal regulation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly heterometallic MOFs, which offer greater potential for gas separation due to their diverse composition. This study presents the synthesis of a series of iron- and vanadium-based heterometallic MOFs (MIL-126), featuring interpenetrated structures, and investigates their adsorption performance for methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), and propane (C3H8). Experimental results reveal that the choice of metal combinations within the MOF framework significantly influences the adsorption performance of MIL-126. Notably, heterometallic MIL-126(Fe/Ni) exhibits a stronger binding affinity for C3H8, with an impressive uptake of 177 cm3/g. The C3H8/CH4 ideal adsorbed solution theory selectivity of MIL-126(Fe/Ni) surpasses that of MIL-126(Fe) by a factor of 7, reaching a value of 853, second only to the highest reported value. Furthermore, MIL-126(Fe/Ni) exhibits remarkable potential for the recovery of pure CH4 from the equimolar C3H8/CH4 mixture, with the amount of pure CH4 approaching the maximum reported value for MOFs. Insights from isosteric heat at zero loading and Henry's coefficients indicate that the transformation of metal types leads to a change in the interaction energy between C3H8 and the framework. Furthermore, breakthrough experiments validate the effective separation capability of MIL-126(Fe/Ni) for CH4/C2H6/C3H8 mixtures. These findings underscore the remarkable potential of heterometallic MOFs in constructing a wide range of new MOFs with tailorable properties, thereby enhancing their gas separation performance.

Hydrogen bond unlocking-driven pore structure control for shifting multi-component gas separation function

Purification of ethylene (C2H4) as the most extensive and output chemical, from complex multi-components is of great significance but highly challenging. Herein we demonstrate that precise pore structure tuning by controlling the network hydrogen bonds in two highly-related porous coordination networks can shift the efficient C2H4 separation function from C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 ternary mixture to CO2/C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 quaternary mixture system. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the different amino groups on the triazolate ligands resulted in the change of the hydrogen bonding in the host network, which led to changes in the pore shape and pore chemistry. Gas adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics and gas-loaded crystal structure analysis indicated that the coordination network Zn-fa-atz (2) weakened the affinity for three C2 hydrocarbons synchronously including C2H4 but enhanced the CO2 adsorption due to the optimized CO2-host interaction and the faster CO2 diffusion, leading to effective C2H4 production from the CO2/C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 mixture in one step based on the experimental and simulated breakthrough data. Moreover, it can be shaped into spherical pellets with maintained porosity and separation performance.

Flow Channel with Recognition Corners in a Stable La-MOF for One-Step Ethylene Production

Single-step ethylene (C2H4) production from acetylene (C2H2), ethylene (C2H4), and ethane (C2H6) mixtures was realized via the strategy of a flow channel with recognition corners in MOF NTUniv-64. Both the uptake amounts and the enthalpy of adsorption (Qst) showed the same order of C2H2 > C2H6 > C2H4. Breakthrough testing also verified the above data and the C2H4 purification ability. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations indicated that uneven corners could precisely detain C2H2 and C2H6, in which the C-H···π interaction distance between C2H2 (2.84 Å) and C2H6 (3.03 Å) and the framework was shorter than that of C2H4 (3.85 Å).

Interaction-selective molecular sieving adsorbent for direct separation of ethylene from senary C2-C4 olefin/paraffin mixture

Olefin/paraffin separations are among the most energy-intensive processes in the petrochemical industry, with ethylene being the most widely consumed chemical feedstock. Adsorptive separation utilizing molecular sieving adsorbents can optimize energy efficiency, whereas the size-exclusive mechanism alone cannot achieve multiple olefin/paraffin sieving in a single adsorbent. Herein, an unprecedented sieving adsorbent, BFFOUR-Cu-dpds (BFFOUR = BF4-, dpds = 4,4'-bipyridinedisulfide), is reported for simultaneous sieving of C2-C4 olefins from their corresponding paraffins. The interlayer spaces can be selectively opened through stronger guest-host interactions induced by unsaturated C = C bonds in olefins, as opposed to saturated paraffins. In equimolar six-component breakthrough experiments (C2H4/C2H6/C3H6/C3H8/n-C4H8/n-C4H10), BFFOUR-Cu-dpds can simultaneously divide olefins from paraffins in the first column, while high-purity ethylene ( > 99.99%) can be directly obtained through the subsequent column using granular porous carbons. Moreover, gas-loaded single-crystal analysis, in-situ infrared spectroscopy measurements, and computational simulations demonstrate the accommodation patterns, interaction bonds, and energy pathways for olefin/paraffin separations.

Fine Tuning Metal-Organic Frameworks with Halogen Functional Groups for Ethylene Purification

One-step C2H4 purification from a mixture of C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 could be achieved by metal-organic framework (MOF) NTUniv-70 with an F-functional group. The selectivities of C2H4/C2H6 and C2H4/C2H2 of NTUnvi-70 based on ideal adsorbed solution theory were at least twice that of the original MOF platform, which was in line with the enthalpy of adsorption (Qst) and breakthrough testing. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations indicated that the C-H···F interactions played an important role in enhanced C2H4/C2H6 and C2H4/C2H2 adsorption selectivities.

Synergistic Nitrogen Binding Sites in a Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient N2 /O2 Separation

Porous materials with d3 electronic configuration open metal sites have been proved to be effective adsorbents for N2 capture and N2 /O2 separation. However, the reported materials remain challenging to address the trade-off between adsorption capacity and selectivity. Herein, we report a robust MOF, MIL-102Cr, that features two binding sites, can synergistically afford strong interactions for N2 capture. The synergistic adsorption site exhibits a benchmark Qst of 45.0 kJ mol-1 for N2 among the Cr-based MOFs, a record-high volumetric N2 uptake (31.38 cm3  cm-3 ), and highest N2 /O2 selectivity (13.11) at 298 K and 1.0 bar. Breakthrough experiments reveal that MIL-102Cr can efficiently capture N2 from a 79/21 N2 /O2 mixture, providing a record 99.99 % pure O2 productivity of 0.75 mmol g-1 . In situ infrared spectroscopy and computational modelling studies revealed that a synergistic adsorption effect by open Cr(III) and fluorine sites was accountable for the strong interactions between the MOF and N2 .

Pore chemistry and geometry control in a metal azolate framework for one-step ethylene purification from quinary gas mixture

In the petrochemical industry, obtaining polymer-grade ethylene from complex light-hydrocarbon mixtures by one-step separation is important and challenging. Here, we successfully prepared the Metal-Azolate Framework 7 (MAF-7) with pore chemistry and geometry control to realize the one-step separation of ethylene from cracking gas with up to quinary gas mixtures (propane/propylene/ethane/ethylene/acetylene). Based on the tailor-made pore environment, MAF-7 exhibited better selective adsorption of propane, propylene, ethane and acetylene than ethylene, and the adsorption ratios of ethane/ethylene and propylene/ethylene are as high as 1.49 and 2.81, respectively. The pore geometry design of MAF-7 leads to the unique weak binding affinity and adsorption site for ethylene molecules, which is clearly proved by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo theoretical calculations. The breakthrough experiments show that ethylene can be directly obtained from binary, ternary, and quinary gas mixtures. These comprehensive properties show that MAF-7 is expected to achieve one-step purification of ethylene in complex light hydrocarbon mixtures.

Spatial Distribution of Nitrogen Binding Sites in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Selective Ethane Adsorption and One-Step Ethylene Purification

The one-step purification of ethylene (C2 H4 ) from mixtures containing ethane (C2 H6 ) and acetylene (C2 H2 ) is an industrially important yet challenging process. In this work, we present a site-engineering strategy aimed at manipulating the spatial distribution of binding sites within a confined pore space. We realized successfully by incorporating nitrogen-containing heterocycles, such as indole-5-carboxylic acid (Ind), benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid (Bzz), and indazole-5-carboxylic acid (Izo), into the robust MOF-808 platform via post-synthetic modification. The resulting functionalized materials, namely MOF-808-Ind, MOF-808-Bzz, and MOF-808-Izo, demonstrated significantly improved selectivity for C2 H2 and C2 H6 over C2 H4 . MOF-808-Bzz with two uniformly distributed nitrogen binding sites gave the optimal geometry for selective ethane trapping through multiple strong C-H⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonds, leading to the highest C2 H2 /C2 H4 and C2 H6 /C2 H4 combined selectivities among known MOFs. Column breakthrough experiments validated its ability to purify C2 H4 from ternary C2 H2 /C2 H4 /C2 H6 mixtures in a single step.

Construction of Negative Electrostatic Pore Environments in a Scalable, Stable and Low-Cost Metal-organic Framework for One-Step Ethylene Purification from Ternary Mixtures

One-step separation of C2 H4 from ternary C2 mixtures by physisorbents remains a challenge to combine excellent separation performance with high stability, low cost, and easy scalability for industrial applications. Herein, we report a strategy of constructing negative electrostatic pore environments in a stable, low-cost, and easily scaled-up aluminum MOF (MOF-303) for efficient one-step C2 H2 /C2 H6 /C2 H4 separation. This material exhibits not only record high C2 H2 and C2 H6 uptakes, but also top-tier C2 H2 /C2 H4 and C2 H6 /C2 H4 selectivities at ambient conditions. Theoretical calculations combined with in situ infrared spectroscopy indicate that multiple N/O sites on pore channels can build a negative electro-environment to provide stronger interactions with C2 H2 and C2 H6 over C2 H4 . Breakthrough experiments confirm its exceptional separation performance for ternary mixtures, affording one of the highest C2 H4 productivity of 1.35 mmol g-1 . This material is highly stable and can be easily synthesized at kilogram-scale from cheap raw materials using a water-based green synthesis. The benchmark combination of excellent separation properties with high stability and low cost in scalable MOF-303 has unlocked its great potential in this challenging industrial separation.

Kilogram-Scale Fabrication of a Robust Olefin-Linked Covalent Organic Framework for Separating Ethylene from a Ternary C2 Hydrocarbon Mixture

One-step adsorptive purification of ethylene (C2H4) from a ternary mixture of acetylene (C2H2), C2H4, and ethane (C2H6) by a single material is of great importance but challenging in the petrochemical industry. Herein, a chemically robust olefin-linked covalent organic framework (COF), NKCOF-62, is designed and synthesized by a melt polymerization method employing tetramethylpyrazine and terephthalaldehyde as cheap monomers. This method avoids most of the disadvantages of classical solvothermal methods, which enable the cost-effective kilogram fabrication of olefin-linked COFs in one pot. Furthermore, NKCOF-62 shows remarkably selective adsorption of C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4 thanks to its unique pore environments and suitable pore size. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that polymer-grade C2H4 can be directly obtained from C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 (1/1/1) ternary mixtures through a single separation process. Notably, NKCOF-62 is the first demonstration of the potential to use COFs for C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 separation, which provides a blueprint for the design and construction of robust COFs for industrial gas separations.

Incorporation of multiple supramolecular binding sites into a robust MOF for benchmark one-step ethylene purification

One-step adsorption separation of C2H4 from ternary C2 hydrocarbon mixtures remains an important and challenging goal for petrochemical industry. Current physisorbents either suffer from unsatisfied separation performance, poor stability, or are difficult to scale up. Herein, we report a strategy of constructing multiple supramolecular binding sites in a robust and scalable MOF (Al-PyDC) for highly efficient one-step C2H4 purification from ternary mixtures. Owing to suitable pore confinement with multiple supramolecular binding sites, Al-PyDC exhibits one of the highest C2H2 and C2H6 uptakes and selectivities over C2H4 at ambient conditions. The gas binding sites have been visualized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, unveiling that the low-polarity pore surfaces with abundant electronegative N/O sites provide stronger multiple supramolecular interactions with C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4. Breakthrough experiments showed that polymer-grade C2H4 can be separated from ternary mixtures with a maximum productivity of 1.61 mmol g-1. This material can be prepared from two simple reagents using a green synthesis method with water as the sole solvent, and its synthesis can be easily scaled to multikilogram batches. Al-PyDC achieves an effective combination of benchmark separation performance, high stability/recyclability, green synthesis and easy scalability to address major challenges for industrial one-step C2H4 purification.

One-step ethylene purification from ternary mixtures by an ultramicroporous material with synergistic binding centers

Developing advanced porous materials with industrial potential to separate multicomponent gas mixtures that are structurally similar is a crucial but challenging task. Here, we report the efficient one-step separation of ethylene (C2H4) from acetylene (C2H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) using an ultramicroporous metal-organic framework UTSA-16. The synergistic effect of the polarized carboxyl groups and coordinated water molecules in its pore channel enables the material to have high uptakes for C2H2 and CO2 due to electrostatic potential matching, as well as excellent separation selectivity against C2H4. Breakthrough experiments suggest that UTSA-16 can efficiently separate 99.9% pure C2H4 from ternary mixtures with a high productivity of 403 L kg-1. Moreover, the preparation cost of UTSA-16 is significantly lower than other related adsorbents by 40-2000 times, indicating its unique potential for industrial applications.

Precise Pore Engineering of fcu-Type Y-MOFs for One-Step C2 H4 Purification from Ternary C2 H6 /C2 H4 /C2 H2 Mixtures

The purification of C2 H4 from C2 H6 /C2 H4 /C2 H2 mixtures is of great significance in the chemical industry for C2 H4 production but remains a daunting task. Guided by powerful reticular chemistry principles, herein a systematic study is carried out to engineer pore dimensions and pore functionality of fcu-type Y-based metal-organic frameworks (Y-MOFs) through the construction of a series of eight new structures using linear dicarboxylate linkers with different length and functional groups. This study illustrates how delicate changes in pore size and pore surface chemistry can effectively influence the adsorption preference of C2 H6 , C2 H4 , and C2 H2 by the MOFs. Importantly, clear relations between pore size/pore surface polarity and C2 adsorption selectivities of this series of MOFs are established. In particular, HIAM-326 built on a linker decorated with trifluoromethoxy group shows notably preferential adsorption of C2 H6 and C2 H2 over C2 H4 , with balanced C2 H2 /C2 H4 and C2 H6 /C2 H4 selectivities. This endows the compound with the capability of one-step purification of C2 H4 from C2 H6 /C2 H4 /C2 H2 ternary mixtures, which is validated by breakthrough measurements where high purity C2 H4 (99.9%+) can be obtained directly from the separation column. Its adsorption thermodynamics and underlying selective adsorption mechanisms are further revealed by ab initio calculations.

Separation of C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 and C2H2/CO2 in a Nitrogen-Rich Copper-Based Microporous Metal-Organic Framework

The purification of industrially valuable C2H2 and C2H4 from multicomponent mixtures represents a crucial process in the chemical industry. In this study, we present a copper-based metal-organic framework (L-py-Cu) built on a nitrogen-rich organic linker that is capable of separating C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 and C2H2/CO2 mixtures, therefore producing highly pure C2H4 and C2H2, respectively. L-py-Cu exhibits favorable adsorption of C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4 and thus achieves one-step C2H4 purification from C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 ternary mixtures, as verified by multicomponent breakthrough measurements. In addition, it can also extract C2H2 from C2H2/CO2 binary mixtures.

Programmed fluorine binding engineering in anion-pillared metal-organic framework for record trace acetylene capture from ethylene

Porous physisorbents are attractive candidates for selective capture of trace gas or volatile compounds due to their low energy footprints. However, many physisorbents suffer from insufficient sorbate-sorbent interactions, resulting in low uptake or inadequate selectivity when gases are present at trace levels. Here, we report a strategy of programmed fluorine binding engineering in anion-pillared metal-organic frameworks to maximize C2H2 binding affinity for benchmark trace C2H2 capture from C2H4. A robust material (ZJU-300a) was elaborately designed to provide multiple-site fluorine binding model, resulting in an ultrastrong C2H2 binding affinity. ZJU-300a exhibits a record-high C2H2 uptake of 3.23 millimoles per gram (at 0.01 bar and 296 kelvin) and one of the highest C2H2/C2H4 selectivity (1672). The adsorption binding of C2H2 and C2H4 was visualized by gas-loaded ZJU-300a structures. The separation capacity was confirmed by breakthrough experiments for 1/99 C2H2/C2H4 mixtures, affording the maximal dynamic selectivity (264) and C2H4 productivity of 436.7 millimoles per gram.

Deep removal of trace C2H2 and CO2 from C2H4 by using customized potassium-exchange mordenite

Adsorptive separation using porous materials is a promising approach for separating alkynes/olefins due to its energy efficiency, while the deep removal of trace amounts of C₂H₂ and CO₂ from C₂H₄ is still very challenging for a commercial adsorbent. Herein, we report a low-cost inorganic metal cation-mediated mordenite (MOR) zeolite with the specific location and distribution of K⁺ cations acting as a goalkeeper for accurately controlling diffusion channels, as evidence of the experimental and simulation results. Deep purification of C₂H₄ from ternary CO₂/C₂H₂/C₂H₄ mixtures was first realized on K-MOR with exceptional results, achieving a remarkable polymer-grade C₂H₄ productivity of 1742 L kg^-1 for the CO₂/C₂H₂/C₂H₄ mixture. Our approach which only involves adjusting the equilibrium ions, is both promising and cost-effective, and opens up new possibilities for the use of zeolites in the industrial light hydrocarbon adsorption and purification process.

Pillar-layer Zn-triazolate-dicarboxylate frameworks with a customized pore structure for efficient ethylene purification from ethylene/ethane/acetylene ternary mixtures

The selective adsorption of C₂H₆ and C₂H₂ over C₂H₄ from C₂H₂/C₂H₄/C₂H₆ ternary mixtures for one-step C₂H₄ purification represents a crucial yet challenging task in industry. The pore structure of the adsorbents must be finely tailored to meet the demanding requirements for the separation considering the very similar physicochemical properties of the three gases. Herein, we report a Zn-triazolate-dicarboxylate framework, HIAM-210, featuring a novel topology which possesses one-dimensional channels decorated with adjacent uncoordinated carboxylate-O atoms. The suitable pore size and customized pore environment enable the compound to selectively capture C₂H₆ and C₂H₂ with high C₂H₂/C₂H₄ and C₂H₆/C₂H₄ selectivities of both 2.0. Breakthrough experiments show that polymer-grade C₂H₄ can be directly harvested from C₂H₂/C₂H₄/C₂H₆ (34/33/33 and 1/90/9) ternary mixtures. The underlying mechanism of the preferential adsorption was uncovered by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and DFT calculations.

Customizing Metal-Organic Frameworks by Lego-Brick Strategy for One-Step Purification of Ethylene from a Quaternary Gas Mixture

One-step purification of ethylene (C₂ H₄ ) from a quaternary gas mixture of C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ /C₂ H₂ /CO₂ by adsorption is a promising separation process, yet developing adsorbents that synergistically capture various gas impurities remains challenging. Herein, a Lego-brick strategy is proposed to customize pore chemistry in a unified framework material. The ethane-selective MOF platform is further modified with customized binding sites to specifically adsorb acetylene and carbon dioxide, thus one-step purification of C₂ H₄ with high productivity of polymer-grade product (134 mol kg^-1 ) is achieved on the assembly of porous coordination polymer-2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (PCP-FDCA) and PCP-5-aminoisophthalic acid (IPA-NH₂ ). Computational studies verify that the low-polarity surface of this MOFs-based platform provides a delicate environment for C₂ H₆ recognition, and the specific binding sites (FDCA and IPA-NH₂ ) exhibit favorable trapping of C₂ H₂ and CO₂ via CH^δ+ ···O^δ- and C^δ+ ···N^δ- electrostatic interactions, respectively. The proposed Lego-brick strategy to customize binding sites within the MOFs structure provides new ideas for the design of adsorbents for compounded separation tasks.

One Atom Can Make All the Difference: Gas-Induced Phase Transformations in Bisimidazole-Linked Diamondoid Coordination Networks

Coordination networks (CNs) that undergo gas-induced transformation from closed (nonporous) to open (porous) structures are of potential utility in gas storage applications, but their development is hindered by limited control over their switching mechanisms and pressures. In this work, we report two CNs, [Co(bimpy)(bdc)]_n (X-dia-4-Co) and [Co(bimbz)(bdc)]_n (X-dia-5-Co) (H₂bdc = 1,4-benzendicarboxylic acid; bimpy = 2,5-bis(1H-imidazole-1-yl)pyridine; bimbz = 1,4-bis(1H-imidazole-1-yl)benzene), that both undergo transformation from closed to isostructural open phases involving at least a 27% increase in cell volume. Although X-dia-4-Co and X-dia-5-Co only differ from one another by one atom in their N-donor linkers (bimpy = pyridine, and bimbz = benzene), this results in different pore chemistry and switching mechanisms. Specifically, X-dia-4-Co exhibited a gradual phase transformation with a steady increase in the uptake when exposed to CO₂, whereas X-dia-5-Co exhibited a sharp step (type F-IV isotherm) at P/P₀ ≈ 0.008 or P ≈ 3 bar (195 or 298 K, respectively). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, in situ powder XRD, in situ IR, and modeling (density functional theory calculations, and canonical Monte Carlo simulations) studies provide insights into the nature of the switching mechanisms and enable attribution of pronounced differences in sorption properties to the changed pore chemistry.

Construction of Fluorinated Propane-Trap in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Record Polymer-Grade Propylene Production under High Humidity Conditions

Propane/propene (C₃ H₈ /C₃ H₆ ) separation is essential in the petrochemical industry but challenging because of their similar physical and chemical properties. Adsorptive separation with C₃ H₈ -selective porous materials can energy-efficiently produce high-purity C₃ H₆ , which is highly promising for replacing conventional cryogenic distillation but suffers from unsatisfactory performance. Herein, through the precise incorporation of fluorinated functional groups into the confined pore space, a new fluorinated metal-organic framework (FDMOF-2) featuring the unique and strong C₃ H₈ -trap is successfully constructed. FDMOF-2 exhibits an unprecedented C₃ H₈ capture capacity of 140 cm³ cm^-3 and excellent C₃ H₈ /C₃ H₆ (1:1, v/v) selectivity up to 2.18 (298 K and 1 bar), thus setting new benchmarks for all reported porous materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the tailored pore confinement in FDMOF-2 provides stronger and multiple attractive interactions with C₃ H₈ , enabling excellent binding affinities. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that C₃ H₈ can be directly extracted from various C₃ H₈ /C₃ H₆ mixtures with FDMOF-2, affording an outstanding C₃ H₆ production (501 mmol L^-1 ) with over 99.99% purity. Benefiting from the robust framework and hydrophobic ligands, the separation performance of FDMOF-2 can be well maintained even under 70% relative humidity conditions.

Highly Selective Separation of C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4 in an N-Rich Cage-Based Microporous Metal-Organic Framework

The separation of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2) and the purification of ethylene (C2H4) from C2H2 are quite essential processes for the chemical industry. However, these processes are challenging due to their similar physical properties, including molecule sizes and boiling points. Herein, we report an N-rich cage-based microporous metal-organic framework (MOF), [Cd5(Tz)9](NO3) (termed as Cd-TZ, TZ stands for tetrazole), and its highly efficient separation of C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4. Single-component gas adsorption isotherms reveal that Cd-TZ exhibits high C2H2 adsorption capacity (3.10 mmol g-1 at 298 K and 1 bar). The N-rich cages in Cd-TZ can trap C2H2 with a higher isosteric heat of adsorption (40.8 kJ mol-1) than CO2 and C2H4 owing to the robust host-guest interactions between the noncoordinated N atoms and C2H2, which has been verified by molecular modeling studies. Cd-TZ shows a high IAST selectivity for C2H2/CO2 (8.3) and C2H2/C2H4 (13.3). The breakthrough simulations confirm the potential for separating C2H2/CO2 and the purification of C2H4 from C2H2.

Highly Robust Microporous Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Ethylene Purification under Dry and Humid Conditions

Two C₂ H₆ -selective metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents with ultrahigh stability, high surface areas, and suitable pore size have been designed and synthesized for one-step separation of ethane/ethylene (C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ ) under humid conditions to produce polymer-grade pure C₂ H₄ . Experimental results reveal that these two MOFs not only adsorb a high amount of C₂ H₆ but also display good C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ selectivity verified by fixed bed column breakthrough experiments. Most importantly, the good water stability and hydrophobic pore environments make these two MOFs capable of efficiently separating C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ under humid conditions, exhibiting the benchmark performance among all reported adsorbents for separation of C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ under humid conditions. Moreover, the affinity sites and their static adsorption energies were successfully revealed by single crystal data and computation studies. Adsorbents described in this work can be used to address major chemical industrial challenges.

Insights into the thermodynamic-kinetic synergistic separation of propyne/propylene in anion pillared cage MOFs with entropy-enthalpy balanced adsorption sites

Propyne/propylene (C₃H₄/C₃H₆) separation is an important industrial process yet challenged by the trade-off of selectivity and capacity due to the molecular similarity. Herein, record C₃H₄/C₃H₆ separation performance is achieved by fine tuning the pore structure in anion pillared MOFs. SIFSIX-Cu-TPA (ZNU-2-Si) displays a benchmark C₃H₄ capacity (106/188 cm³ g^-1 at 0.01/1 bar and 298 K), excellent C₃H₄/C₃H₆ IAST selectivity (14.6-19.3) and kinetic selectivity, and record high C₃H₄/C₃H₆ (10/90) separation potential (36.2 mol kg^-1). The practical C₃H₄/C₃H₆ separation performance is fully demonstrated by breakthroughs under various conditions. 37.8 and 52.9 mol kg^-1 of polymer grade C₃H₆ can be produced from 10/90 and 1/99 C₃H₄/C₃H₆ mixtures. 4.7 mol kg^-1 of >99% purity C₃H₄ can be recovered by a stepped desorption process. Based on the in situ single crystal analysis and DFT calculation, an unprecedented entropy-enthalpy balanced adsorption pathway is discovered. MD simulation further confirmed the thermodynamic-kinetic synergistic separation of C₃H₄/C₃H₆ in ZNU-2-Si.

Negative electrostatic potentials in a Hofmann-type metal-organic framework for efficient acetylene separation

Efficient adsorptive separation of acetylene (C₂H₂) from carbon dioxide (CO₂) or ethylene (C₂H₄) is industrially important but challenging due to the identical dynamic diameter or the trace amount. Here we show an electrostatic potential compatible strategy in a nitroprusside-based Hofmann-type metal-organic framework, Cu(bpy)NP (NP = nitroprusside, bpy = 4,4’-bipyridine), for efficient C₂H₂ separation. The intruding cyanide and nitrosyl groups in undulating one-dimensional channels induce negative electrostatic potentials for preferential C₂H₂ recognition instead of open metal sites in traditional Hofmann-type MOFs. As a result, Cu(bpy)NP exhibits a 50/50 C₂H₂/CO₂ selectivity of 47.2, outperforming most rigid MOFs. The dynamic breakthrough experiment demonstrates a 99.9% purity C₂H₄ productivity of 20.57 mmol g⁻¹ from C₂H₂/C₂H₄ (1/99, v/v) gas-mixture. Meanwhile, C₂H₂ can also be captured and recognized from ternary C₂H₂/CO₂/C₂H₄ (25/25/50, v/v/v) gas-mixture. Furthermore, computational studies and in-situ infrared spectroscopy reveal that the selective C₂H₂ binding arises from the compatible pore electro-environment generated by the electron-rich N and O atoms from nitroprusside anions.
