Polyelectrolytes: From Seminal Works to the Influence of the Charge Sequence

We propose a selected tour of the physics of polyelectrolytes (PE) following the line initiated by de Gennes and coworkers in their seminal 1976 paper. The early works which used uniform charge distributions along the PE backbone achieved tremendous progress and set most milestones in the field. Recently, the focus has shifted to the role of the charge sequence. Revisited topics include PE complexation and polyampholytes (PA). We develop the example of a random PE in poor solvent forming pearl-necklace structures. It is shown that the pearls typically adopt very asymmetric mass and charge distributions. Individual sequences do not necessarily reflect the ensemble statistics and a rich variety of behaviors emerges (specially for PA). Pearl necklaces are dynamic structures and switch between various types of pearl-necklace structures, as described for both PE and PA.

Synthesis and Investigation of the Properties of Biphasic Hybrid Composites Based on Bentonite, Copper Hexacyanoferrate, Acrylamide and Acrylic Acid Hydrogel

This article presents a study of the synthesis and characterization of new biphasic hybrid composite materials consisting of intercalated complexes (ICC) of natural mineral bentonite with copper hexaferrocyanide (phase I), which are incorporated into the bulk of the polymer matrix (phase II). It has been established that the sequential modification of bentonite with copper hexaferrocyanide and introduction of acrylamide and acrylic acid cross-linked copolymers into its volume by means of in situ polymerization promote the formation of a heterogeneous porous structure in the resulting hybrid material. The sorption abilities of prepared hybrid composite toward radionuclides of liquid radioactive waste (LRW) have been studied, and the mechanism for binding radionuclide metal ions with the components of the hybrid composition have been described.

Antiseptic Polymer-Surfactant Complexes with Long-Lasting Activity against SARS-CoV-2

Antiseptic polymer gel-surfactant complexes were prepared by incorporating the low-molecular-weight cationic disinfectant cetylpyridinium chloride into the oppositely charged, slightly cross-linked polymer matrices. Three types of polymers were used: copolymers of acrylamide and sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate; copolymers of acrylamide and sodium methacrylate; copolymers of vinylpyrrolidone and sodium methacrylate. It was shown that the rate of the release of the cationic disinfectant from the oppositely charged polymer gels could be tuned in a fairly broad range by varying the concentration of the disinfectant, the degree of swelling, and degree of cross-linking of the gel and the content/type of anionic repeat units in the polymer matrix. Polymer-surfactant complexes were demonstrated to reduce SARS-CoV-2 titer by seven orders of magnitude in as little as 5 s. The complexes retained strong virucidal activity against SARS-CoV-2 for at least one week.

Increased Donnan exclusion in charged polymer networks at high salt concentrations

The swelling of univalent and multivalent charged polymeric networks in electrolytic solutions is studied using a classical thermodynamic model. Such systems were first modeled by Donnan, who derived an expression for the chemical potential of the ions by introducing an electric potential that is commonly referred to as the Donnan potential. This well-established theory leads to a simple quadratic relationship for the partitioning of ions between the network and the external solution. When the concentration of fixed charges in the swollen gel is large enough, the electrolyte in the external solution is "excluded" from the gel (commonly referred to as Donnan exclusion). In the standard Donnan theory, and in virtually all subsequent theories, the magnitude of Donnan exclusion decreases with increasing electrolyte concentration in the external solution. Our model predicts this is not necessarily true; we show that the magnitude of Donnan exclusion increases with increasing electrolyte concentration over a broad range of parameter space (average chain length between crosslinks, fraction of charged monomers in the network, the nature of the interactions between the ions, solvent molecules and polymer chains, and ion concentration in the external solution). We also present explicit bounds for the validity of Donnan's original theory. Model predictions are compared to simulations and experimental data obtained for a cationic gel immersed in electrolytic solutions of salts containing univalent and bivalent cations.

The effect of explicit polarity on the conformational behavior of a single polyelectrolyte chain

In this work using dissipative particle dynamics simulations with explicit treatment of polar species we demonstrate that the molecular nature of dielectric media has a significant impact on swelling and collapse of a polyelectrolyte chain in a dilute solution. We show that the small-scale effects related to the presence of polar species lead to the intensification of the electrostatic interactions when the charges are close to each other and/or their density is high enough. As a result, the electrostatic strength , usually regarded as the main parameter governing the polyelectrolyte chain collapse, does not have a universal meaning: the value of λ at which the coil-to-globule transition occurs is found to be dependent on the specific fixed value of the solvent bulk permittivity ε while varying the monomer unit charge Q and vice versa. This effect is observed even when the backbone and the counterions have the same polarity as the solvent beads, i.e. no dielectric mismatch is present. The reason for such behavior is rationalized in terms of the "effective" dielectric permittivity ε^eff which depends on the volume fraction φ of charged units inside the polymer chain volume; using ε^eff instead of ε collapses all data onto one master curve describing the chain shrinking with λ. Furthermore, it is shown that a polar chain adopts less swollen conformations in the polyelectrolyte regime and collapses more easily compared to a non-polar chain.

Carbomer microgels as model yield-stress fluids

The review presents current research results for Carbopol-based microgels as yield-stress materials, covering three aspects: chemical, physical and rheological. Such a joint three-aspect study has no analog in the literature. The chemical aspects of Carbopol polymers are presented in terms of a cross-linking polymerization of acrylic acid, their molecular structure, microgel formulation, polyacid dissociation and neutralization, osmotic pressure and associated immense microgel swelling. The physical characterization is focused on models of the shear-induced solid-to-liquid transition of microgels, which are formed of mesoscopic particles typical for soft matter materials. Models that describe interparticle effects are presented to explain the energy states of microgel particles at the mesoscale of scrutiny. Typical representatives of the models utilize attributes of jamming dispersions, micromechanical and polyelectrolyte reactions. Selected relationships that result from the models, such as scaling rules and nondimensional flow characteristics are also presented. The rheological part presents the discussion of problems of yield stress in 2D and 3D deformations, appearance and magnitude of the wall slip. The theory and characteristics of Carbopol microgel deformation in rotational rheometers are presented with graphs for the steady-state measurements, stress-controlled oscillation and two types of transient shear deformation. The review is concluded with suggestions for future research.

Volume Phase Transition in Gels: Its Discovery and Development

 The history of volume phase transition of responsive gels from its theoretical prediction to experimental discovery was described and the major role of mixing Gibbs energy function in theoretical models was stressed. For detailed analysis and fine tuning of the volume phase transition, the generalized Flory-Huggins model with concentration and temperature dependent interaction function coupled with Maxwell construction as a tool is very suitable. Application of expansive stresses can uncover the potential of various swelling gels for volume phase transition. Experimentally, the abrupt, equilibrium-controlled phase transition is often hard to achieve due to passage of gel through states of mechanical instability and slow relaxation processes in macroscopic objects.

State of ions and water molecules in the water salt solutions of polyacrylamide and co-polymer of “acrylamide–acrylic acid Na/k salt”

Geometrical and electronic parameters of the microstates of the molecular models of polyacrylamide and co-polymers of acrylamide-acrylic acid in aqueous solutions of sodium and potassium chlorides were computed by the non-empirical SCF MO LCAO method with the use of the basis MINI Huzinaga. The models contained four monomeric units of the polymer, including two metal carboxylate groups, 80 water molecules and two pairs of ions Na+ and Cl– or K+ and Cl–. It follows from the calculation results that there is a principal difference in the hydration of Na+ and K+: the Na+‧‧‧О2– bond is shorter than the sum of the radii of the interacting ions, while the k+‧‧‧O2– bond is equal or longer. This indicates that in the first case, the bonds are partially covalent, while in the second one they are pure electrostatic. All elements of the molecular models in the both cases are combined by the intermolecular bonds forming a spatial net. The polymer molecules have a flexible chain with oxygen containing functional groups that are built into the structure of the salt solutions without distorting it. We assume that this is the main reason for the good solubility of the studied polymers in the aqueous salt solutions.

Effects of charge contrast and composition on microgel formation and interactions with bacteria-mimicking liposomes

Microgels offer opportunities for improved delivery of antimicrobial peptides (AMP). To contribute to a foundation for rational design of such systems, we here study the effects of electrostatics on the generation of peptide-carrying microgels. For this, alginate microgels loaded with polymyxin B and cross-linked by Ca²⁺, were formed by electrostatic complexation using a hydrodynamic focusing three-dimensional (3D)-printed micromixer, varying pH and component concentrations. The structure of the resulting composite nanoparticles was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering, dynamic light scattering, and z-potential measurements, whereas peptide encapsulation and release was monitored spectrophotometrically. Furthermore, membrane interactions of these systems were assessed by dye leakage assays in model lipid vesicles. Our results indicate that charge contrast between polymyxin B and alginate during microgel formation affects particle size and network dimensions. In particular, while microgels prepared at maximum polymyxin B-alginate charge contrast at pH 5 and 7.4 are characterized by sharp interfaces, those formed at pH 9 are characterized by a more diffuse core, likely caused by a weaker peptide-polymer affinity, and a shell dominated by alginate that shrinks at high CaCl₂ concentrations. Quantitatively, however, these effects were relatively minor, as were differences in peptide encapsulation efficiency and electrolyte-induced peptide release. This demonstrates that rather wide charge contrasts allow efficient complexation and particle formation, with polymyxin B encapsulated within the particle interior at low ionic strength, but released at high electrolyte concentration. As a consequence of this, peptide-mediated membrane destabilization were suppressed by microgel incorporation at low ionic strength, but regained after microgel disruption. After particle disruption at high ionic strength, however, some polymyxin B was found to remain bound to alginate chains from the disrupted composite microgel particles, resulting in partial loss in membrane interactions, compared to the free peptide.

Response of a Permanently Charged Polyelectrolyte Brush to External Ions: The Aspects of Structure and Dynamics

Structure and dynamics inside permanently charged polyelectrolyte brushes, sodium polystyrene sulfonate brushes, during their response to the introduction of external ions (NaCl) are investigated by neutron reflectivity and dielectric spectroscopy. Neutron reflectivity measurements show that the segmental density of the inner part of the brushes decreases and that of the outer part increases when the salt level is tuned from the salt-free condition to a moderate level (<10^-2 M)-the brushes swell further compared with the salt-free condition. This is attributed to the breakup of the multiplets formed by dipole-dipole pairs, and by this process, the previously constrained chain segments by the multiplets are released. Dielectric spectroscopy discovers a giant dipole by the charge separation of the adsorbed counterions and the PSS^- chains, induced by electric field. The dynamics of the induced giant dipole is accelerated with the increase of external salt, as a result of the charge regularization by elevated salt level. At high-enough salt level, the screening effect reduces the electrostatic repulsion between the neighboring chains and makes the brushes shrink.

Surface behavior and bulk properties of aqueous chitosan and type-B gelatin solutions for effective emulsion formulation

The behavior of aqueous chitosan (CH), type-B gelatin (GB) and CH-GB coacervate was studied on oil-in-water emulsion formulation at various pH and concentration ratio. The coacervate was formed by phase separation at ratios CH:GB, 1:10 to 1:1 with total biopolymer concentrations of 0.55%-1.0% (w/v) at pH 4.0-5.5. Soluble complexes were formed below pH 5.0 and coacervate formation was confirmed at pH 5.0 and above by zeta potential and UV-spectroscopy measurements. The coacervate formation was found maximum at the CH-GB ratios of 1:10 and 1:5 at pH 5.5. Formulated emulsions (>10μm droplets) using 1% (w/v) chitosan and GB were found stable (+52.5mv and creaming index 86%) and unstable respectively. Emulsion stabilized by mixed CH:GB 1:5 (3%w/v) had no creaming effect. The instability was attributed to the lower surface activity (K=5.0Lg^-1) of pure GB compared to CH (K=14.3Lg^-1). The formulation and methods can successfully tune the stability of the emulsions.

Ionic Strength Responsive Sulfonated Polystyrene Opals

Stimuli-responsive photonic crystals (PCs) represent an intriguing class of smart materials very promising for sensing applications. Here, selective ionic strength responsive polymeric PCs are reported. They are easily fabricated by partial sulfonation of polystyrene opals, without using toxic or expensive monomers and etching steps. The color of the resulting hydrogel-like ordered structures can be continuously shifted over the entire visible range (405-760 nm) by changing the content of ions over an extremely wide range of concentration (from about 70 μM to 4 M). The optical response is completely independent from pH and temperature, and the initial color can be fully recovered by washing the sulfonated opals with pure water. These new smart photonic materials could find important applications as ionic strength sensors for environmental monitoring as well as for healthcare screening.

A Tunable Silk Hydrogel Device for Studying Limb Regeneration in Adult Xenopus Laevis

In certain amphibian models limb regeneration can be promoted or inhibited by the local wound bed environment. This research introduces a device that can be utilized as an experimental tool to characterize the conditions that promotes limb regeneration in the adult frog (Xenopus laevis) model. In particular, this device was designed to manipulate the local wound environment via a hydrogel insert. Initial characterization of the hydrogel insert revealed that this interaction had a significant influence on mechanical forces to the animal, due to the contraction of the hydrogel. The material and mechanical properties of the hydrogel insert were a factor in the device design in relation to the comfort of the animal and the ability to effectively manipulate the amputation site. The tunable features of the hydrogel were important in determining the pro-regenerative effects in limb regeneration, which was measured by cartilage spike formation and quantified by micro-computed tomography. The hydrogel insert was a factor in the observed morphological outcomes following amputation. Future work will focus on characterizing and optimizing the device's observed capability to manipulate biological pathways that are essential for limb regeneration. However, the present work provides a framework for the role of a hydrogel in the device and a path forward for more systematic studies.

Swelling enhancement of polyelectrolyte brushes induced by external ions

It has been observed previously that when permanently charged polyelectrolyte brushes are exposed to an external salt solution, they shrink when the salt level is high enough. In this study, we observed an enhanced swelling process before the salt concentration reached that limit. We systematically investigated a few strong polyelectrolyte brush systems, including sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSSNa), poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride) (PMETAC) and potassium poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PSPMA) with different molecular weights and grafting density using a combination of methods, including ellipsometry, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The swelling enhancement is expressed by the thickening of the brush layer at moderate salt concentrations, accompanied by the decrease of refractive index, the increase of the amount of solvent inside the brushes and an increase in retardation time. A scenario is proposed in which the counterions penetrate into the brushes driven by the external salt ions, they disrupt and break up the previously formed multiplets due to the dipole-dipole interaction by the ion-pairs on the polymer chain. This process results in the release of the bound segments and the stretching of the polymer chains.

Polymer micelles with hydrophobic core and ionic amphiphilic corona. 1. Statistical distribution of charged and nonpolar units in corona

Polymer micelles with hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) core and ionic amphiphilic corona from charged N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide (EVP) and uncharged 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) units spontaneously self-assembled from PS-block-poly(4VP-stat-EVP) macromolecules in mixed dimethylformamide/methanol/water solvent. The fraction of statistically distributed EVP units in corona-forming block is β = [EVP]/([EVP]+[4VP]) = 0.3-1. Micelles were transferred into water via dialysis technique, and pH was adjusted to 9, where 4VP is insoluble. Structural characteristics of micelles were investigated both experimentally and theoretically as a function of corona composition β. Methods of dynamic and static light scattering, electrophoretic mobility measurements, sedimentation velocity, transmission electron microscopy, and UV spectrophotometry were applied. All micelles possessed spherical morphology. The aggregation number, structure, and electrophoretic mobility of micelles changed in a jumplike manner near β ~ 0.6-0.75. Below and above this region, micelle characteristics were constant or insignificantly changed upon β. Theoretical dependencies for micelle aggregation number, corona dimensions, and fraction of small counterions outside corona versus β were derived via minimization the micelle free energy, taking into account surface, volume, electrostatic, and elastic contributions of chain units and translational entropy of mobile counterions. Theoretical estimations also point onto a sharp structural transition at a certain corona composition. The abrupt reorganization of micelle structure at β ~ 0.6-0.75 entails dramatic changes in micelle dispersion stability in the presence of NaCl or in the presence of oppositely charged polymeric (sodium polymethacrylate) or amphiphilic (sodium dodecyl sulfate) complexing agents.

Mechano-chemical oscillations and waves in reactive gels

We review advances in a new area of interdisciplinary research that concerns phenomena arising from inherent coupling between non-linear chemical dynamics and mechanics. This coupling provides a route for chemical-to-mechanical energy transduction, which enables materials to exhibit self-sustained oscillations and/or waves in both concentration and deformation fields. We focus on synthetic polymer gels, where the chemo-mechanical behavior can be engineered into the material. We provide a brief review of experimental observations on several types of chemo-mechanical oscillations in gels. Then, we discuss methods used to theoretically and computationally model self-oscillating polymer gels. The rest of the paper is devoted to describing results of theoretical and computational modeling of gels that undergo the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. We discuss a remarkable form of mechano-chemical transduction in these materials, where the application of an applied force or mechanical contact can drive the system to switch between different dynamical behavior, or alter the mechanical properties of the material. Finally, we discuss ways in which photosensitive BZ gels could be used to fabricate biomimetic self-propelled objects. In particular, we describe how non-uniform illumination can be used to direct the movement of BZ gel 'worms' along complex paths, guiding them to bend, reorient and turn.
