Abstract
AIM We want to verify the correlation between the increasing use of novel nicotine-containing products (NNCPs) and non-nicotine delivery products (NNDPs) among young individuals and the escalating negative health consequences, necessitating their prohibition. METHODS We performed a comprehensive analysis of the most relevant literature about the utilisation of NNCPs and NNDPs among young individuals and their health effects. RESULTS Despite being initially seen as less harmful alternatives, for smokers aiming to quit, these products have become more popular due to misleading marketing claims. Teenagers using NNCPs and NNDPs, despite having no smoking history, are more likely to transition to tobacco smoking. Consistent use can lead to health issues like pulmonary damage, asthma, and cardiovascular and ocular problems. CONCLUSION The EAP and the ECPCP endorse the WHO's appeal to outlaw these hazardous products. They urge European governments to forbid the sale of NNCPs and NNDPs to children and adolescents in order to safeguard their well-being. They also propose specific recommendations (box 4) to support this cause.

Abstract
Technology-based platforms offer crucial support for regulatory agencies in overseeing tobacco products to enhance public health protection. The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), such as electronic cigarettes, has surged exponentially over the past decade. However, the understanding of the impact of ENDS on lung health remains incomplete due to scarcity of physiologically relevant technologies for evaluating their toxicity. This review examines the societal and public health impacts of ENDS, prevalent preclinical approaches in pulmonary space, and the application of emerging Organ-on-Chip technologies and bioinspired robotics for assessing ENDS respiratory toxicity. It highlights challenges in ENDS inhalation toxicology and the value of multidisciplinary bioengineering approaches for generating reliable, human-relevant regulatory data at an accelerated pace.

Abstract
E-cigarettes are thought to aid in tobacco smoking cessation, but there are concerns about their overall effectiveness and safety for the general population, particularly adults. This review aims to investigate the mechanisms of toxicity and adverse effects of e-cigarettes on the respiratory system, comparing these effects with those of conventional smoking. A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Searches were performed on PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library using keywords, controlled vocabulary, and text words, with the following criteria: studies published in English from 2014 to 2024, open access, peer-reviewed, and full-text availability. Study selection, quality assessment, and data extraction were carried out by two independent reviewers. The Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias in included randomized controlled trials, and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) tool was employed to assess the strength of evidence and determine its generalizability. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have diverse mechanisms of toxicity, including inflammation, hypoxia, cardiovascular stress, and metabolic changes. Reported adverse effects include cough, throat irritation, nausea, and hemodynamic changes. However, ENDS are associated with fewer risks compared to conventional cigarette smoking. ENDS users experience fewer respiratory and cardiovascular issues and have lower levels of biomarkers such as NNAL and CO compared to traditional smokers. Additionally, ENDS are more effective than nicotine replacement therapy (nicotine patches) for smoking cessation, particularly in pregnant women. The side effects of ENDS and nicotine-free vaping are similar to those of conventional smoking in pregnant women, with the exception of a lower birth weight among newborns exposed to ENDS (p < 0.05). ENDS present a complex balance of benefits and risks regarding respiratory health. While there are adverse effects, ENDS are considered less detrimental than conventional smoking and a viable option for smoking cessation. Longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate their safety with long-term use (>16 weeks). Policymakers and health practitioners should use these findings to develop balanced public health policies that weigh the benefits of ENDS against potential health risks, enabling informed decision-making for users.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of circulating microvesicles isolated from chronic electronic (e-)cigarette users on cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) expression of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), cellular cytokine release, phosphorylation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and NO production. The HUVECs were treated with microvesicles isolated via flow cytometry from nine non-tobacco users (five male and four female; 22 ± 2 years of age) and 10 e-cigarette users (six male and four female; 22 ± 2 years of age). Microvesicles from e-cigarette users induced significantly greater release of interleukin-6 (183.4 ± 23.6 vs. 150.6 ± 15.4 pg/mL; P = 0.002) and interleukin-8 (160.0 ± 31.6 vs. 129.4 ± 11.2 pg/mL; P = 0.01), in addition to expression of p-NF-κB p65 (Ser536) (18.8 ± 3.4 vs. 15.6 ± 1.5 a.u.; P = 0.02) from HUVECs compared with microvesicles from non-tobacco users. Nuclear factor-κB p65 was not significantly different between microvesicles from the non-tobacco users and from the e-cigarette users (87.6 ± 8.7 vs. 90.4 ± 24.6 a.u.; P = 0.701). Neither total eNOS (71.4 ± 21.8 vs. 80.4 ± 24.5 a.u.; P = 0.413) nor p-eNOS (Thr495) (229.2 ± 26.5 vs. 222.1 ± 22.7 a.u.; P = 0.542) was significantly different between microvesicle-treated HUVECs from non-tobacco users and e-cigarette users. However, p-eNOS (Ser1177) (28.9 ± 6.2 vs. 45.8 ± 9.0 a.u.; P < 0.001) expression was significantly lower from e-cigarette users compared with non-tobacco users. Nitric oxide production was significantly lower (8.2 ± 0.6 vs. 9.7 ± 0.9 μmol/L; P = 0.001) in HUVECs treated with microvesicles from e-cigarette users compared with microvesicles from non-tobacco users. This study demonstrated increased NF-κB activation and inflammatory cytokine production, in addition to diminished eNOS activity and NO production resulting from e-cigarette use. HIGHLIGHTS: What is the central question of this study? Circulating microvesicles contribute to cardiovascular health and disease via their effects on the vascular endothelium. The impact of electronic (e-)cigarette use on circulating microvesicle phenotype is not well understood. What is the main finding and its importance? Circulating microvesicles from e-cigarette users increase endothelial cell inflammation and impair endothelial nitric oxide production. Endothelial inflammation and diminished nitric oxide bioavailability are central factors underlying endothelial dysfunction and, in turn, cardiovascular disease risk. Deleterious changes in the functional phenotype of circulating microvesicles might contribute to the reported adverse effects of e-cigarette use on cardiovascular health.

Abstract
AIM To measure trends in the use of various smoking products among children and adolescents from 2016 to 2023. METHOD The data is based on seven waves of the "Präventionsradar", a school-based epidemiological study in grades 5 to 10. The primary endpoints of the study were the lifetime and monthly prevalence of the use of tobacco cigarettes, e-cigarettes, shisha and the use of at least two of these smoking products (combined use). Prevalence estimates are based on logistic regression models. RESULTS The analysis was based on 94,127 questionnaires. The sex ratio was balanced (49% female), mean age was 13 years (SD=1.8). In 2022/2023, the lifetime prevalence of smoking tobacco cigarettes was 18.8% (95% CI 18.1-19.5), of e-cigarettes 23.5% (95% CI 22.8-24.3), of shisha 14.0% (95% CI 13.4-14.7) and combined use 19.0% (95% CI 18.3-19.7). The monthly prevalence of smoking tobacco cigarettes was 5.9% (95% CI 5.5-6.4), of e-cigarettes 7.0% (95% CI 6.5-7.4), of shisha 3.2% (95% CI 2.8-3.5) and combined use 4.8% (95% CI 4.4-5.2). The following trends in lifetime prevalence have emerged since 2016: tobacco cigarettes (-3.0 percentage points), e-cigarettes (+1.8 percentage points), shisha (-9.2 percentage points), combined use (-2.7 percentage points). In the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, youth smoking decreased and rose again post-COVID with the exception of shisha. DISCUSSION The use of smoking products in adolescence occurs frequently. Over the observational period, a trend reversal towards e-cigarettes as the most popular product among children and young people is most likely. In addition, the combined use of several smoking products has become a common pattern of consumption. Consistent preventive measures are required in order to achieve the goal of a smoke-free society in 2040.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Widespread use of e-cigarette (EC) or vaping products causes respiratory disorders including the nationwide outbreak of e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) in 2019. Chronic adverse health effects are now being reported as well. To address this important public health issue, an innovative approach of epidemic control and epidemiologic study is required. We aimed to assess the association between short-term and long-term use of EC products and respiratory health in adults using smartphone app data. METHODS A population-based, repeated measures, longitudinal smartphone app study that performed 8-day survey participation over 60 days for each participant from August 2020 to March 2021, including 306 participants aged 21 years and older in the US. The participants were asked to complete the respiratory health questionnaire daily, weekly, and monthly on their smartphone app. We analyzed the association between vaping habits and respiratory health using generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs). RESULTS EC use in the previous 7 days was associated with frequent cough (OR: 5.15, 95% CI: 2.18, 12.21), chronic cough (OR: 3.92, 95% CI: 1.62, 9.45), frequent phlegm (OR: 3.99, 95% CI: 1.44, 11.10), chronic phlegm (OR: 3.55, 95% CI: 1.41, 8.96), episodes of cough and phlegm (OR: 4.68, 95% CI: 1.94, 11.28), mMRC grade 3-4 dyspnea (OR: 3.32, 95% CI: 1.35 to 8.13), chest cold (OR: 3.07, 95% CI: 1.29, 7.33), eye irritation (OR: 2.94, 95% CI: 1.34, 6.47) and nose irritation (OR : 2.02, 95% CI: 0.95, 4.30). Relatively long-term effects of the past 90 days EC use was associated with an increased risk of wheeze (OR: 3.04, 95% CI: 1.31, 7.03), wheeze attack (OR: 2.78, 95% CI: 1.07, 7.24), mMRC grade 3-4 dyspnea (OR: 2.54, 9% CI: 1.05 to 6.18), eye irritation (OR: 3.16, 95% CI: 1.49, 6.68), and eye irritation during the past month (OR: 3.50, 95% CI: 1.52, 8.04). CONCLUSIONS In this smartphone app-based repeated measures study, short-term and relatively long-term use of EC increased the risk of respiratory symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Demographic and health factors are known to predict vaping. Less is known about psychological predictors of vaping uptake, particularly among non-smoking adults using longitudinal designs. We aimed to model how psychological factors related to personality and mental health predicted the likelihood of vaping uptake over time in non-smoking adults ages 18+ using longitudinal data. METHODS Longitudinal regression models utilised data from the 2018-2020 waves of the New Zealand Attitudes and Values Study to assess how the Big Five personality traits, mental distress and self-control predicted who began vaping over time among non-users (non-vapers and non-smokers), controlling for gender, age, ethnicity and economic deprivation. RESULTS Analyses included 36,309 adults overall (ages 18 to 99; M = 51.0). The number of non-users who transitioned into current vaping was small (transitioned from 2018 to 2019, n = 147; 0.48%; 2019 to 2020, n = 189, 0.63%). Fully adjusted models showed that adults with higher mental distress (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.43; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.09-1.88), lower self-control (aOR 0.79; 95% CI 0.69-0.89) and higher extraversion (aOR 1.09; 95% CI 1.06-1.13) were more likely to begin vaping at the next time point compared to adults who remained non-users. Higher neuroticism and lower conscientiousness also predicted vaping uptake in initial models, but inclusion of mental distress and self-control superseded these traits. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Psychological factors related to mental distress, impulse control and sociability predicted who was more likely to begin vaping as non-smoking adults. Harm prevention interventions could target these factors to reduce vaping uptake in non-smokers.

Evidence from in vitro and animal models has identified the pulmonary toxicity of flavors in electronic cigarettes (ECIGs); however, less is known from epidemiological studies about the effects of flavors in the respiratory health. This study examined the longitudinal association between exposure to ECIGs flavors and nocturnal dry cough among ECIGs users. A secondary analysis of data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (2014-2019) was conducted. The study population included adults who provided information (n = 18,925) for a total of 38,638 observations. Weighted-incidence estimates and weighted- generalized estimating equation models were performed to assess unadjusted and adjusted associations. The weighted incidence proportion (WIP) of nocturnal dry cough was significantly higher among current (WIP:16.6%; 95%CI 10.5, 21.2) and former fruit flavored ECIGs users (WIP:16.6%; 95%CI 11.3, 21.9) as compared to non-ECIGs users (WIP:11.1%; 95%CI 10.6, 11.6). Current ECIGs users of fruit flavors showed 40% higher risk of reporting cough than non-ECIGs users (aRR:1.40, 95%CI 1.01, 1.94). Former ECIGs users of multiple flavors and other flavors had 300% and 66% higher risk to develop cough, respectively (aRR:3.33, 95%CI 1.51, 7.34 and aRR:1.66, 95%CI 1.0.9, 2.51), relative to non-ECIGs users. We observed a significantly higher risk of developing nocturnal dry cough in the past 12 months in current and former ECIGs users of fruit flavors and in former ECIGs users of multiple flavors. To the extent that cough may serve as an early indicator of respiratory inflammation and potential disease risk, the association between ECIGs use and cough raises potential concerns.

Abstract
E-cigarettes are primarily used by teenagers and young adults. Flavors in e-cigarettes increase their attractiveness and encourage young people and adults to start using them. This exposes young people in particular to the risk of nicotine addiction and various toxic substances from the aerosol of e-cigarettes. There are indications that various flavors in e-cigarettes are harmful to health, although toxicological studies are still lacking for the majority of flavors. There is a need for independent scientific investigations in this area. The scientific societies involved are calling for a ban on flavors in e-cigarettes, a ban on disposable e-cigarettes, effective regulation of the sale of e-cigarettes and effective control and implementation of the provisions for the protection of minors.

Abstract
Objectives The prevalence of e-cigarettes is significantly increasing among adults as an alternative method to tobacco smoking. However, the chemical products of e-cigarettes have an influence on human general health. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between e-cigarette use and psychological distress as well as participation in daily activities among adults in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It also evaluates the demographic profile and usage patterns of e-cigarette users. Methods This cross-sectional study involved 396 e-cigarette smokers in Riyadh city. An online survey was administered, including questions about smoking patterns and the perceived effects of e-cigarettes on activities of daily living. Additionally, mental health were assessed using the Kessler 6 scale. Results Most of the participants were educated young males (61.4%). About 29.5% of the participants reported using e-cigarettes primarily to quit tobacco cigarettes. In addition, e-cigarette usage was significantly associated with lower participation in activities of daily living and higher psychological distress. Conclusion This study found that many e-cigarette users are well-educated young individuals who use e-cigarettes as a substitute for traditional cigarettes. However, the study also revealed that using e-cigarettes is associated with negative effects on smokers' daily activities and mental health.

Abstract
After several years of declining tobacco consumption, the number of smokers in Germany is currently stagnating or rising again. The reasons seem to be manifold, e. g. stress caused by the pandemic with social isolation, rising cost of living and war in Europe.With tobacco use still widespread in the German population, evidence-based tobacco cessation is rarely implemented.According to recent studies, e-cigarettes are involved in the pathogenesis of lung disease, cardiac and vascular damage. In addition, their ingredients also have carcinogenic effects. However, clinical studies on long-term use are not yet available.E-cigarettes as a consumer product are not superior to nicotine replacement products and addiction-reducing medications recommended in guidelines. In the therapeutic setting, they are slightly more effective than nicotine replacement products. However, they are usually consumed continuously and thus perpetuate nicotine dependence. Their use increases the risk of relapse to tobacco smoking.Despite the various new approaches, such as Internet-based offerings, app, etc., talks and pharmacotherapy are the gold standard and more effective than any therapy on its own.

Abstract
The electronic cigarette (EC) was developed as an alternative to cigarette smoking. In less than a decade, the prevalence of past-month EC usage increased from 1.5 to 27.5 % among US high-school students. In the coming years, Asia-Pacific countries will have the highest sales of electronic nicotine/non-nicotine delivery systems (ENDS/ENNDS) after Western Europe. Based on the World Health Organization and Indian Council of Medical Research recommendations, India approved a complete ban on EC in 2019. Even though it has been three years since the ban, EC is still being sold in India's grey markets, where marketing is not regulated. In this narrative review, we discuss that vaping is not just a harm reduction strategy for tobacco smoking cessation but poses a serious threat to India's existing tobacco control efforts as well as the health of the country's young people.

Abstract
To assess the association of regional socioeconomic deprivation and nicotine use, survey data from 17,877 pupils aged 9-17 years were analysed. Lifetime use of combustible, e-cigarettes, and both products were the outcome variables. The German Index of Socioeconomic Deprivation was the exposure variable. Logistic regression models controlling for age, gender, school type, and sensation seeking were used to examine associations between regional socioeconomic deprivation and nicotine use. Ever use of combustible cigarettes was 17.8%, of e-cigarettes 19.6%, and of both products 13.4%. Compared to the most affluent area, the adjusted odds ratio of combustible cigarette use in the most deprived area was 2.24 (95% CI: 1.67-3.00), of e-cigarette use 1.56 (95% CI: 1.20-2.03), and of poly use 1.91 (95% CI: 1.36-2.69). Nicotine use among young people across ages and especially in socioeconomic-deprived areas was widespread. Nicotine control measures are urgently needed to reduce smoking and vaping in German adolescents.

Abstract
Introduction The pulmonary effects of e-cigarette use (or vaping) became a healthcare concern in 2019, following the rapid increase of e-cigarette-related or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI) in young people, which resulted in the critical care admission of thousands of teenagers and young adults. Pulmonary functional imaging is well-positioned to provide information about the acute and chronic effects of vaping. We generated a systematic review to retrieve relevant imaging studies that describe the acute and chronic imaging findings that underly vaping-related lung structure-function abnormalities. Methods A systematic review was undertaken on June 13th, 2023 using PubMed to search for published manuscripts using the following criteria: [("Vaping" OR "e-cigarette" OR "EVALI") AND ("MRI" OR "CT" OR "Imaging")]. We included only studies involving human participants, vaping/e-cigarette use, and MRI, CT and/or PET. Results The search identified 445 manuscripts, of which 110 (668 unique participants) specifically mentioned MRI, PET or CT imaging in cases or retrospective case series of patients who vaped. This included 105 manuscripts specific to CT (626 participants), three manuscripts which mainly used MRI (23 participants), and two manuscripts which described PET findings (20 participants). Most studies were conducted in North America (n = 90), with the remaining studies conducted in Europe (n = 15), Asia (n = 4) and South America (n = 1). The vast majority of publications described case studies (n = 93) and a few described larger retrospective or prospective studies (n = 17). In e-cigarette users and patients with EVALI, key CT findings included ground-glass opacities, consolidations and subpleural sparing, MRI revealed abnormal ventilation, perfusion and ventilation/perfusion matching, while PET showed evidence of pulmonary inflammation. Discussion and conclusion Pulmonary structural and functional imaging abnormalities were common in patients with EVALI and in e-cigarette users with or without respiratory symptoms, which suggests that functional MRI may be helpful in the investigation of the pulmonary health effects associated with e-cigarette use.

Abstract
AIM To measure trends in the use of various smoking products among children and adolescents from 2016 to 2023. METHOD The data is based on seven waves of the "Präventionsradar", a school-based epidemiological study in grades 5 to 10. The primary endpoints of the study were the lifetime and monthly prevalence of the use of tobacco cigarettes, e-cigarettes, shisha and the use of at least two of these smoking products (combined use). Prevalence estimates are based on logistic regression models. RESULTS The analysis was based on 94,127 questionnaires. The sex ratio was balanced (49% female), mean age was 13 years (SD=1.8). In 2022/2023, the lifetime prevalence of smoking tobacco cigarettes was 18.8% (95% CI 18.1-19.5), of e-cigarettes 23.5% (95% CI 22.8-24.3), of shisha 14.0% (95% CI 13.4-14.7) and combined use 19.0% (95% CI 18.3-19.7). The monthly prevalence of smoking tobacco cigarettes was 5.9% (95% CI 5.5-6.4), of e-cigarettes 7.0% (95% CI 6.5-7.4), of shisha 3.2% (95% CI 2.8-3.5) and combined use 4.8% (95% CI 4.4-5.2). The following trends in lifetime prevalence have emerged since 2016: tobacco cigarettes (-3.0 percentage points), e-cigarettes (+1.8 percentage points), shisha (-9.2 percentage points), combined use (-2.7 percentage points). In the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, youth smoking decreased and rose again post-COVID with the exception of shisha. DISCUSSION The use of smoking products in adolescence occurs frequently. Over the observational period, a trend reversal towards e-cigarettes as the most popular product among children and young people is most likely. In addition, the combined use of several smoking products has become a common pattern of consumption. Consistent preventive measures are required in order to achieve the goal of a smoke-free society in 2040.

Abstract
Electronic cigarettes, or vape pens, have gained popularity among young people due to their attractive appearance, but they also have numerous side effects. These devices come in various shapes, sizes, and costs, with many brands and various flavors to choose from. As of now, there are around 2,807 people hospitalized in the United States due to vaping. Electronic cigarettes are illegal in many countries, with laws varying from country to country. The health service has been criticized for the implementation of the ban, with states implementing month-long drives and submitting reports. The Indian Police have also conducted raids and arrested five individuals under the 2019 ban on Electronic Cigarettes (Production, Manufacture, Trade, Transport, Sale, Distribution, Storage, and Advertisement) Act. The history of vapes can be traced back to the invention of the first electric vaporizer in 1927 by Joseph Robinson. Other pioneers like Herbert Gilbert and Jed Rose developed nicotine fixes using refined smoke. The vape was made in 2003 by Chinese smoker Hon Lik, who created the device as a better option to traditional smoking.

Abstract
Introduction Smokers use electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), including e-cigarettes, as a harm reduction strategy even though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved them for tobacco cessation. The limited literature about ENDS use for cigarette cessation is concerning for the U.S. military, which is largely comprised of young adults at increased risk for tobacco use. Thus, the current study aims to evaluate use of ENDS products as a cessation tool in relation to point-prevalence tobacco abstinence at one-year follow-up in a cohort of 8,901 U.S. Air Force personnel attending entry-level job training from March 2016 to April 2019. Methods A propensity-score adjusted multinomial logistic regression model was used to assess the association between the baseline motives for ENDS use (i.e., for cigarette cessation versus alternative reasons) and tobacco use at the one-year follow-up (cigarette use, non-cigarette tobacco product use, and tobacco abstinence) among those reporting history of cigarette use at baseline. Results Smokers reporting ENDS use for cigarette cessation were more likely to be abstinent at one-year follow-up (Odds Ratio[OR] = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.06-2.49, P =.03) as well as quit using non-cigarette tobacco products (OR = 2.11, 95% CI: 1.65-2.70, P <.001) than those reporting ENDS use for alternative reasons. Conclusions Current tobacco users are recommended to use FDA-approved products for smoking cessation, such as nicotine replacement therapy. However, given the high prevalence of cigarette use among military populations, ENDS may provide a useful alternative harm reduction strategy for this high-risk population.

Abstract
Evidence of the harms of e-cigarettes has been unfolding slowly and has been documented in many reviews and reports worldwide. A narrative review of new evidence is presented since, as research has continued, newly aggregated evidence of the dangers of electronic cigarettes on the brain, heart, and lungs is vital to inform decisions on restricting the use of e-cigarettes. Several biomedical research databases were searched for electronic cigarette health effects, emphasizing reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Over 50 review studies, primarily in 2022 and 2023, illustrate some of the latest information on e-cigarette harms. Results show studies of respiratory, neurological, and cardiovascular effects. Researchers call for expanding studies through new methods to elaborate on initial findings of multiple harms emerging in clinical investigations. Since the use of electronic cigarettes for adult cessation is not sanctioned in most countries, it is clear that health authorities see significant costs to the health of the general population if the promotion and use of electronic cigarettes occur worldwide. Regulatory action to control electronic cigarettes should consider the substantial evidence of electronic cigarette harm.

Abstract
Background Vaping is growing in popularity worldwide, especially among young adults. To develop effective tobacco prevention interventions, first, there must be an understanding of the attitudes and perceptions of young adults toward the use of vaping. Highlighting perception discrepancies between races may allow physicians to more effectively counsel their patients regarding the risks of vaping. Methodology We conducted an online survey using Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk, https://www.mturk.com/) to identify misconceptions about vaping among adults aged 18 to 24 years who currently vape. The survey consisted of 18 questions evaluating reasons for vaping, history of tobacco use, and thoughts on the adverse effects of vaping. The Penn State Electronic Cigarette Dependence Index was implemented to assess dependence. Exclusion criteria comprised respondents who did not vape and were under the age of 18 or over the age of 24. Results A total of 1,009 responses were received with 66% identifying as male (n = 667) and 33% (n = 332) identifying as female. Sixty-nine percent of patients smoked cigarettes or used another form of tobacco previously (n = 692). Of those respondents, 81% indicated that they had since quit using tobacco products (excluding vaping). Switching to vaping was the most common reason for quitting cigarettes or other forms of tobacco, with health concerns and social purposes being the second and third most common reasons provided, respectively. When asked whether vaping had negative health impacts, only 238 (24%) participants strongly agreed with this statement, while a majority (64%) neither agreed nor disagreed or only somewhat agreed. Most participants were white or Caucasian (n = 777). When asked whether smoking or vaping had more severe health implications, 55% of white or Caucasian participants, 41% of Asian participants, and 32% of black or African American participants indicated that vaping was worse than smoking cigarettes. The average Penn State dependence score was 8.7, suggesting medium dependence. Conclusions Our survey sample of 1,006 young adults who vape indicated that the majority did not perceive vaping as significantly harmful. A comprehensive smoking prevention policy, educational interventions, and quit support are needed to enhance awareness among young adults about the health effects associated with vaping. Such interventions should also consider the novel shift toward the replacement of smoking with vaping.

Abstract
This paper deals with the question of whether electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) can minimize the proven harm of smoking tobacco or may lead to a long-term harm. While the British Royal College of Physicians recommends smokers to use e-cigarettes as a substitute for tobacco products, the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine advises smokers against using e-cigarettes. The harm reduction strategy is based on three hypotheses. Hypothesis 1: It is assumed that e-cigarettes cause less damage to health than tobacco cigarettes. Hypothesis 2: It is postulated that smokers are motivated to switch from conventional cigarettes to e-cigarettes. Hypothesis 3: It is assumed that e-cigarettes are an effective means for quitting smoking with few side effects. Although the long-term health consequences of e-cigarette use remain unknown, there is increasing evidence that e-cigarettes are toxic, harmful to cardiovascular system, respiratory health and potentially carcinogenic. Population-representative epidemiological surveys have shown that three-quarters of all current e-cigarette users in Germany smoke tobacco at the same time. In a few randomized clinical trials, e-cigarettes showed higher success rates compared to nicotine replacement products. As over-the-counter consumer products, a large number of studies have found no advantage for e-cigarettes under real conditions. In addition, e-cigarettes prolong nicotine dependence compared to nicotine replacement products. According to the current state of knowledge, the hypotheses behind the harm minimization strategy using e-cigarettes must be regarded as refuted. It therefore appears ethically problematic when doctors recommend e-cigarettes to their patients as a substitute for smoking.

Abstract
Evaluating vaping parameters that influence electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) emission profiles and potentially hazardous exposure levels is essential to protecting human health. We developed an automated multi-channel ENDS aerosol generation system (EAGS) for characterizing size-resolved particle emissions across pod- and mod-type devices using real-time monitoring instruments, an exposure chamber, and vaping parameters including different ventilation rates, device type and age, e-liquid formulation, and atomizer setup. Results show the ENDS device type, e-liquid flavoring, and nicotine content can affect particle emissions. In general, pod-type devices have unimodal particle size distributions and higher number emissions, while mod-type devices have bimodal size distributions and higher mass emissions. For pod-type devices, later puff fractions emit lower aerosols, which is potentially associated with the change of coil resistance and power during ageing. For a mod-type device, an atomizer with a lower resistance coil and higher power generates larger particle emissions than an atomizer with a greater resistance coil and lower power. The unventilated scenario produces higher particle emission factors, except for particle mass emission from pod-type devices. The data provided herein indicate the EAGS can produce realistic and reproducible puff profiles of pod- and mod-type ENDS devices and therefore is a suitable platform for characterizing ENDS-associated exposure risks.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of vegetable glycerin (VG), a main e-cigarette constituent, on endotoxin-induced acute lung injury (ALI). Mice received intratracheal administration of 30% VG in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) vehicle or only PBS (control) for 4 days. On Day 5, mice received an intratracheal instillation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (LPS group and VG + LPS group) or PBS (VG group and control group). Lung histopathology, expression of chemokine receptors, and regulatory signaling were analyzed 24 h after the Day 5 treatment. VG significantly increased ALI-associated histopathological and fibrotic changes in both the VG group and LPS-induced ALI mice (VG + LPS group). Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and western blot analyses revealed that VG administration resulted in upregulation of neutrophil markers [lymphocyte antigen 6 complex locus G6D (Ly6G) and myeloperoxidase (MPO)] as well as upregulation of the expression of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), a central mediator of fibrogenesis, in the lungs of both VG and VG + LPS groups. VG enhanced the expression of adhesion molecules [very late antigen 4 (VLA-4) and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1)] and increased activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) to prompt neutrophil recruitment in the lungs of mice with ALI. Intraperitoneal administration of a p38 inhibitor attenuated these histopathological changes significantly as well as VG-induced upregulation in expression of Ly6G, MPO, VLA-4, VCAM-1, TGF-β, and collagen-1 in mice with ALI. In conclusion, VG enhances neutrophil chemotaxis and fibrosis and it amplifies the inflammatory response associated with LPS-induced ALI in the lungs via enhancement of p38 MAPK activity.

Abstract
9 years ago, in July 2013, a group of 12 experts, many who had previously expressed support for e-cigarettes, rated the relative harm of 12 nicotine-containing products by using 14 criteria addressing harms to the users and others [1]. The group concluded e-cigarettes were substantially less harmful than combustible cigarettes. The popular media have taken up these results and promoted e-cigarettes as “95% less risky” or “95% less harmful” than combustible cigarettes. However, the authors acknowledged, “a limitation of this study is the lack of hard evidence for the harms of most products on most of the criteria” [1]. Abstract
After several years of declining tobacco consumption, the number of smokers in Germany is currently stagnating or rising again. The reasons seem to be manifold, e. g. stress caused by the pandemic with social isolation, rising cost of living and war in Europe.With tobacco use still widespread in the German population, evidence-based tobacco cessation is rarely implemented.According to recent studies, e-cigarettes are involved in the pathogenesis of lung disease, cardiac and vascular damage. In addition, their ingredients also have carcinogenic effects. However, clinical studies on long-term use are not yet available.E-cigarettes as a consumer product are not superior to nicotine replacement products and addiction-reducing medications recommended in guidelines. In the therapeutic setting, they are slightly more effective than nicotine replacement products. However, they are usually consumed continuously and thus perpetuate nicotine dependence. Their use increases the risk of relapse to tobacco smoking.Despite the various new approaches, such as Internet-based offerings, app, etc., talks and pharmacotherapy are the gold standard and more effective than any therapy on its own.
