Abstract
PURPOSE Diverting ileostomy is related to postoperative high-output stoma (HOS) leading to kidney injury. The purpose of our study was to clarify the risk factors for ileostomy-associated kidney injury, which is kidney injury starting after the first operation to ileostomy closure after colorectal tumor surgery with diverting ileostomy. METHODS Between January 2013 and December 2020, 442 patients who underwent colorectal tumor surgery (cancer, neuroendocrine tumor, and leiomyosarcoma) following diverting ileostomy formation were included. We used the KDIGO (Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes) guidelines, which defines the acute kidney injury (AKI) to classify patients with ileostomy-associated kidney injury. The definition of AKI was (i) serum creatinine (sCr) ≥ 0.3 mg/dL or (ii) sCr ≥1.5-fold the preoperative level. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify the independent risk factors for kidney injury. RESULTS Kidney injury developed in 99/442 eligible patients (22.4%). Patients in the kidney injury group were older age, male sex, high American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status Classification System (ASA-PS) score, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes. The preoperative hemoglobin, albumin, prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and creatinine clearance (CCr) were lower, and the maximum wound length was more extended than the non-kidney injury group. The median highest daily stoma output was significantly higher in the kidney injury group. The postoperative white blood cell (WBC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were also high in the kidney injury group. The univariate analysis showed older age, male sex, high ASA-PS score, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes were the risk factors for kidney injury. The multivariate analysis revealed that age 70 or older, ASA-PS III/IV, hypertension, and HOS ≥2000 ml/day were independent risk factors for kidney injury. CONCLUSIONS Surgeons should consider diverting colostomy creation for patients with risk factors such as age 70 or older, ASA-PS III/IV, and hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND After colorectal surgery, acute kidney injury (AKI) results from a complex interplay of multiple independent causes and preventive measures that occur during the hospitalization. Prophylactic stenting for ureter identification has been identified as a potential cause, but the evidence is conflicting, possibly because of differing baseline characteristics and procedure-related approaches. OBJECTIVE This retrospective cohort study assesses the role of stents in the etiology of AKI after determining the independent predictors of AKI. METHODS From a population of 1224 consecutive colorectal patients (from 8/1/2016 through 12/31/2021), 382 (31.2%) received ureteral stents, and propensity score matching was used to create stented and control groups. Emergent cases and patients with sepsis were excluded from the analysis. Previously identified independent predictors of AKI, minimally invasive procedures, and a history of diabetes mellitus were used as criteria to create two balanced groups. RESULTS Baseline demographic characteristics and procedure-related factors baseline factors were similar between the groups. There was no difference in the rate of AKI between stented patients and controls (P = 0.82), nor was there any difference in postoperative complications, such as chronic renal insufficiency (CRI, P = 0.49), average postoperative creatinine (P = 0.67), urinary tract infections (UTI, P = 0.82), any postoperative infection (P = 0.48), in-hospital complications (P = 1.00), length of stay (LOS, P = 0.15), and 30-day readmissions (P = 0.79). CONCLUSIONS In a population of patients where stenting was frequently employed, ureter stents placed for identification did not appear to cause AKI or AKI-related complications.

Abstract
Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious adverse event often overlooked following major abdominal surgery. While radical gastrectomy stands as the primary curative method for treating gastric cancer patients, little information exists regarding AKI post-surgery. Hence, this study aimed to ascertain the incidence rate, risk factors, and consequences of AKI among patients undergoing radical gastrectomy. Methods This was a population-based, retrospective cohort study. The incidence of AKI was calculated. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify independent predictors of AKI. Survival curves were plotted by using the Kaplan-Meier method and differences in survival rates between groups were analyzed by using the log-rank test. Results Of the 2,875 patients enrolled in this study, 61 (2.1%) developed postoperative AKI, with AKI Network 1, 2, and 3 in 50 (82.0%), 6 (9.8%), and 5 (8.2%), respectively. Of these, 49 patients had fully recovered by discharge. Risk factors for AKI after radical gastrectomy were preoperative hypertension (odds ratio [OR], 1.877; 95% CI, 1.064-3.311; P = 0.030), intraoperative blood loss (OR, 1.001; 95% CI, 1.000-1.002; P = 0.023), operation time (OR, 1.303; 95% CI, 1.030-1.649; P = 0.027), and postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) admission (OR, 4.303; 95% CI, 2.301-8.045; P < 0.001). The probability of postoperative complications, mortality during hospitalization, and length of stay in patients with AKI after surgery were significantly higher than those in patients without AKI. There was no statistical difference in overall survival (OS) rates between patients with AKI and without AKI (1-year, 3-year, 5-year overall survival rates of patients with AKI and without AKI were 93.3% vs 92.0%, 70.9% vs 73.6%, and 57.1% vs 67.1%, respectively, P = 0.137). Conclusions AKI following radical gastrectomy is relatively rare and typically self-limited. AKI is linked with preoperative hypertension, intraoperative blood loss, operation time, and postoperative ICU admission. While AKI raises the likelihood of postoperative complications, it does not affect OS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this retrospective review, the relative importance of systemic inflammation among other causes of acute kidney injury (AKI) was investigated in 1224 consecutive colorectal surgery patients. A potential benefit from reducing excessive postoperative inflammation on AKI might then be estimated. METHODS AKI was determined using the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. The entire population (mixed group), composed of patients with or without sepsis, and a subpopulation of patients without sepsis (aseptic group) were examined. Markers indicative of inflammation were procedure duration, the first postoperative white blood cell (POD # 1 WBC) for the mixed population, and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (POD #1 NLR) for the aseptic population. Multivariable logistic regression was then performed using significant (P < 0.05) predictors. The importance of inflammation among independent predictors of AKI and AKI-related complications was then assessed. RESULTS AKI occurred in 24.6% of the total population. For the mixed population, there was a link between inflammation (POD # 1 WBC) and AKI (P = 0.0001), on univariate regression. Medications with anti-inflammatory properties reduced AKI: ketorolac (P = 0.047) and steroids (P = 0.038). Similarly, in an aseptic population, inflammation (POD # 1 NLR) contributed significantly to AKI (P = 0.000). On multivariable analysis for the mixed and aseptic population, the POD #1 WBC and the POD #1 NLR were independently associated with AKI (P = 0.000, P = 0.022), as was procedure duration (P < 0.0001, P < 0.0001). Inflammation-related parameters were the most significant contributors to AKI. AKI correlated with complications: postoperative infections (P = 0.016), chronic renal insufficiency (CRI, P < 0.0001), non-infectious complications (P = 0.010), 30-day readmissions (P = 0.001), and length of stay (LOS, P < 0.0001). Inflammation, in patients with or without sepsis, was similarly a predictor of complications: postoperative infections (P = 0.002, P = 0.008), in-hospital complications (P = 0.000, P = 0.002), 30-day readmissions (P = 0.012, P = 0.371), and LOS (P < 0.0001, P = 0.006), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Systemic inflammation is an important cause of AKI. Limiting early postsurgical inflammation has the potential to improve postoperative outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are no consensus definitions for evaluating kidney function recovery after acute kidney injury (AKI) and acute kidney disease (AKD), nor is it clear how recovery varies across populations and clinical subsets. We present a federated analysis of four population-based cohorts from Canada, Denmark and Scotland, 2011-18. METHODS We identified incident AKD defined by serum creatinine changes within 48 h, 7 days and 90 days based on KDIGO AKI and AKD criteria. Separately, we applied changes up to 365 days to address widely used e-alert implementations that extend beyond the KDIGO AKI and AKD timeframes. Kidney recovery was based on resolution of AKD and a subsequent creatinine measurement below 1.2× baseline. We evaluated transitions between non-recovery, recovery and death up to 1 year; within age, sex and comorbidity subgroups; between subset AKD definitions; and across cohorts. RESULTS There were 464 868 incident cases, median age 67-75 years. At 1 year, results were consistent across cohorts, with pooled mortalities for creatinine changes within 48 h, 7 days, 90 days and 365 days (and 95% confidence interval) of 40% (34%-45%), 40% (34%-46%), 37% (31%-42%) and 22% (16%-29%) respectively, and non-recovery of kidney function of 19% (15%-23%), 30% (24%-35%), 25% (21%-29%) and 37% (30%-43%), respectively. Recovery by 14 and 90 days was frequently not sustained at 1 year. Older males and those with heart failure or cancer were more likely to die than to experience sustained non-recovery, whereas the converse was true for younger females and those with diabetes. CONCLUSION Consistently across multiple cohorts, based on 1-year mortality and non-recovery, KDIGO AKD (up to 90 days) is at least prognostically similar to KDIGO AKI (7 days), and covers more people. Outcomes associated with AKD vary by age, sex and comorbidities such that older males are more likely to die, and younger females are less likely to recover.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) following radical cystectomy (RC) for bladder cancer and evaluate risk factors for AKI as well as the impact of AKI on development of long-term renal insufficiency. METHODS A retrospective analysis of patients undergoing RC between 2010 and 2020 at a high-volume tertiary referral center. AKI was graded according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome (KDIGO) criteria within 90days of surgery. Long-term renal insufficiency was defined as estimated glomerular function <45 mL/min. Cumulative incidence and Cox Proportional Hazards models were used to evaluate both short- and long-term loss of renal function and investigate their association with pre- and perioperative variables. RESULTS AKI occurred in 332 out of 755 patients (44%) within 90days. Preoperative chronic hypertension and obesity were independent preoperative risk factors. Robot-assisted RC was associated with a higher risk of AKI compared to open RC in multivariable analyses. The absolute risk of developing long-term renal insufficiency was 8.7% (95%CI: 5.6-12) after 5years in patients without AKI and 26% (95%CI: 16-36) in patients with KDIGO-stage ≥2. In multivariable analysis, both KDIGO-stage 1 and ≥2 were independently associated with long-term estimated glomerular filtration rate <45 mL/min. CONCLUSION A significant number of patients experienced AKI after RC, and even patients with KDIGO-stage 1 were at increased risk of long-term renal insufficiency. Recognizing pre- and perioperative risk factors can identify patients where close surveillance and early intervention may help minimize renal function decline following RC.

Abstract
AIM Fluid loss, dehydration and resultant kidney injury are common when a diverting ileostomy is formed during rectal cancer surgery, the consequences of which are unknown. The aim of this retrospective single-site cohort study is to evaluate the impact of sustained postoperative renal dysfunction after rectal resection on long-term renal impairment and survival. METHOD All patients with rectal adenocarcinoma undergoing resection between January 2003 and March 2017 were included, with follow-up to June 2020. The primary outcome was impact on long-term mortality attributed to a 25% or greater drop in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) following rectal resection. Secondary outcomes were the long-term effect on renal function resulting from the same drop in eGFR and the effect on long-term mortality and renal function of a 50% drop in eGFR. We also calculated the effect on mortality of a 1% drop in eGFR. RESULTS A total of 1159 patients were identified. Postoperative reductions in eGFR of 25% and 50% were associated with long-term overall mortality with adjusted hazard ratios of 1.84 (1.22-2.77) (p = 0.004) and 2.88 (1.45-5.71) (p = 0.002). The median survival of these groups was 86.0 (64.0-108.0) months and 53.3 (7.8-98.8) months compared with 144.5 (128.1-160.9) months for controls. Long-term effects on renal function were demonstrated, with those who sustained a >25% drop in renal function having a 38.8% mean decline in eGFR at 10 years compared with 10.2% in controls. CONCLUSION Persistent postoperative declines in renal function may be linked to long-term mortality. Further research is needed to assess causal relationships and prevention.

Abstract
Purpose To determine the rate of acute kidney injury (AKI) after laparoscopic colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery and the predictive value of urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) for postoperative AKI and mortality during 3 years of follow-up. Methods A total of 216 CRC patients who had undergone laparoscopic surgery were included in our study. We divided all patients into two groups, including group 1 (n = 31) with postoperative AKI and group 2 (n = 185) without postoperative AKI. Urine NGAL was measured using the ELISA technique. Clinical and laboratory data were collected the day before surgery. Postoperative AKI included events occurring within 7 days of the index operation, and mortality was obtained during 3 years of follow-up. Results The ratio of postoperative AKI was 14.35% (31/216 patients). The urine NGAL level in group 1 was significantly higher than in group 2, p < 0.001. At cut-off value = 14.94 ng/mL, uNGAL has a predictive value for AKI (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.858, p < 0.001). After 3 years of follow-up, the total mortality rate was 7.9%. The mortality rate in group 1 (45.2%) was significantly higher than in group 2 (1.6%) with p < 0.001). At cut-off value = 19.85 ng/mL, uNGAL has a predictive value for mortality (AUC = 0.941, p < 0.001). Conclusions The rate of acute kidney injury after laparoscopic CRC surgery was 14.35%. Preoperative urine NGAL has a good predictive value for postoperative acute kidney injury and mortality during 3 years of follow-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer survival has improved in recent decades but there are concerns that survivors may develop kidney problems due to adverse effects of cancer treatment or complications of the cancer itself. We quantified the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) in colorectal cancer survivors compared to people with no prior cancer. METHODS Retrospective matched cohort study using electronic health record primary care data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink GOLD linked to hospital data in England (HES-APC). Individuals with colorectal cancer between 1997-2018 were individually matched on age, sex, and GP practice to people with no prior cancer. We used Cox models to estimate hazard ratios for an incident hospital diagnosis of AKI in colorectal cancer survivors compared to individuals without cancer, overall and stratified by time since diagnosis adjusted for other individual-level factors (adj-HR). RESULTS Twenty thousand three hundred forty colorectal cancer survivors were matched to 100,058 cancer-free individuals. Colorectal cancer survivors were at increased risk of developing AKI compared to people without cancer (adj-HR = 2.16; 95%CI 2.05-2.27). The HR was highest in the year after diagnosis (adj-HR 7.47, 6.66-8.37), and attenuated over time, but there was still increased AKI risk > 5 years after diagnosis (adj-HR = 1.26, 1.17-1.37). The association between colorectal cancer and AKI was greater for younger people, men, and those with pre-existing chronic kidney disease. CONCLUSIONS Colorectal cancer survivors were at increased risk of AKI for several years after cancer diagnosis, suggesting a need to prioritise monitoring, prevention, and management of kidney problems in this group of cancer survivors.

Abstract
Background Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) has an alarmingly increasing trend and arouses increasing attention. Causes of death in EOCRC population remain unclear. Methods Data of EOCRC patients (1975-2018) were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Distribution of death was calculated, and death risk of each cause was compared with the general population by calculating standard mortality ratios (SMRs) at different follow-up time. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were utilized to identify independent prognostic factors for overall survival (OS). Results The study included 36,013 patients, among whom 9,998 (27.7%) patients died of colorectal cancer (CRC) and 6,305 (17.5%) patients died of non-CRC causes. CRC death accounted for a high proportion of 74.8%-90.7% death cases within 10 years, while non-CRC death (especially cardiocerebrovascular disease death) was the major cause of death after 10 years. Non-cancer death had the highest SMR in EOCRC population within the first year after cancer diagnosis. Kidney disease [SMR = 2.10; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.65-2.64] and infection (SMR = 1.92; 95% CI, 1.48-2.46) were two high-risk causes of death. Age at diagnosis, race, sex, year of diagnosis, grade, SEER stage, and surgery were independent prognostic factors for OS. Conclusion Most of EOCRC patients died of CRC within 10-year follow-up, while most of patients died of non-CRC causes after 10 years. Within the first year after cancer diagnosis, patients had high non-CRC death risk compared to the general population. Our findings help to guide risk monitoring and management for US EOCRC patients.

Analysis of factors associated with postoperative acute kidney injury in patients with colorectal cancer and the development of a risk prediction model: a retrospective study. Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the factors associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) in postoperative colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and develop a risk prediction model. METHODS The clinical data of 389 CRC patients were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into AKI (n = 30) and non-AKI groups (n = 359) according to KDIGO diagnostic criteria. Demographic data, the presence of underlying diseases, perioperative conditions and related examination results were compared between the two groups. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the independent risk factors for postoperative AKI, and a risk prediction model was established. And a verification group (94 patients) was used to verify the model. RESULTS 30 patients (7.71%) with CRC had postoperative AKI. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that preoperative combined hypertension, preoperative anemia, inadequate intraoperative crystalloid infusion, low intraoperative minimum mean arterial pressure (MAP) and moderate to severe postoperative decline in hemoglobin (Hb) levels were independent risk factors. The risk prediction model developed was expressed as Logit P = - 0.853 + 1.228 * preoperative combined hypertension + 1.275 *preoperative anemia - 0.002 * intraoperative crystalloid infusion (ml) - 0.091 * intraoperative minimum MAP (mmHg) + 1.482 * moderate to severe postoperative decline in Hb levels. In Hosmer-Lemeshow test, χ2 = 8.157, P = 0.718 showed that the fitting effect was good. The area under ROC curve was 0.776 (95% CI 0.682-0.871, P < 0.001), with a prediction threshold of 1.570, a sensitivity of 63.3% and a specificity of 88.9%. The sensitivity and specificity of the verification group were 65.8% and 86.1%. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative combined hypertension, preoperative anemia, inadequate intraoperative crystalloid infusion, low intraoperative minimum MAP, and moderate to severe postoperative decline in Hb levels were independent risk factors for AKI development in CRC patients. The prediction model can effectively predict the occurrence of postoperative AKI in patients with CRC.

Abstract
Background Ovarian cancer is one of the most common gynecologic cancers with the highest mortality rate in China. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a postoperative complication associated with all-cause mortality. The incidence and risk factors for AKI after cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) have not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and associate ed risk factors of AKI among those patients undergoing CRS-HIPEC. Methods This retrospective study collected demographic, tumor-related, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data from 282 advanced ovarian cancer patients who underwent CRS-HIPECs. AKI was defined and staged according to the clinical practice guideline of Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) in 2012. The prognosis of AKI was determined according to the change in serum creatinine 90 days after the operation. We conducted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to assess the association between variables of interest and the occurrence of AKI. Results Of 282 advanced ovarian cancer patients, 11.7% of them developed AKI. The Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk factors independently associated with AKI included cisplatin dose≥70mg/m2 (OR=3.668, 95%CI 1.336-10.070, P=0.012); Baseline eGFR<60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (OR=2.704, 95%CI 1.373-5.322, P=0.004); and concomitant medications of angiotensin convert enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ACEI or ARB) (OR=3.122, 95%CI 1.545-14.892, P=0.039). Conclusion Our study demonstrates that the incidence of AKI after CRS plus cisplatin-based HIPEC is not uncommon among advanced ovarian cancer patients. Cisplatin overdose, baseline kidney dysfunction, and use of ACEI or ARB are independent risk factors for the occurrence of AKI among those patients.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common and mortal disease. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the relatively common comorbidity among cancer patients affecting the available therapy and outcomes. However, data on prevalence of CKD in patients with CRC undergoing surgery is limited. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of CKD in a cohort of 560 consecutive patients with CRC undergoing surgical treatment with curative intent. Neoadjuvant therapy in a form of radiotherapy or radiochemotherapy was administered before the surgery in 67 patients and in 86 patients, respectively. Results: CKD was reported in 10%, diabetes in 25%, and hypertension in 60%, while anemia was reported in 47%. The patients with CKD were more likely to be older and anemic with higher serum CRP, which reflects a general inflammatory state. Relative to patients without this therapy, patients undergoing neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy were older, had significantly lower eGFR and albumin, and higher creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase and INR, before the surgery. All CKD patients, except two, were older than 65 years of age. Conclusions: In order to ensure the best possible outcomes, CKD should be diagnosed and treated appropriately in oncology patients to prevent complications, so they may continue their therapy with the least interruption or discontinuation of treatment.

Abstract
Objective The present study aimed to investigate whether acute kidney injury (AKI) was associated with 3-year mortality in elderly patients after non-cardiac surgery. Methods The present study was a 3-year follow-up study of two randomized controlled trials. A total of 1,319 elderly patients who received non-cardiac surgery under general anesthesia were screened. AKI was diagnosed by the elevation of serum creatinine within a 7-day postoperative period according to Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guidelines. A long-term telephonic follow-up was undertaken by investigators who were not involved in the previous two trials and had no access to the study group assignment. The date of death was taken from the official medical death certificate. The primary outcome was to investigate the association between AKI and postoperative 3-year mortality using the multivariable Cox regression risk model. Results Of the 1,297 elderly patients (mean age 71.8 ± 7.2 years old) who were included in the study, the incidence of AKI was 15.5% (201/1297). Of the patients with AKI, 85% (170/201) were at stage 1, 10% (20/201) at stage 2, and 5% (11/201) at stage 3. The 3-year all-cause mortality was 28.9% (58/201) in patients with AKI and 24.0% (263/1,096) in patients without AKI (hazard ratio 1.247, 95% confidence interval 0.939–1.657, P = 0.128). The multivariable Cox regression showed that AKI was not associated with 3-year mortality after adjustment of confounding factors (adjusted hazard ratio 1.045, 95% confidence interval 0.780–1.401, P = 0.766). Conclusions AKI was a common postoperative complication, but it was not associated with 3-year mortality in elderly patients who underwent non-cardiac surgery. The low incidence of severe AKI might underestimate its underlying association with long-term mortality.

Abstract
Oncosurgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, staging, and management of cancer and cancer-related complications. Acute kidney injury is a common and important complication related to oncologic surgery, associated with longer hospital length of stay, greater costs, increased risk of incident or progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD), and higher mortality. The pathogenesis of oncosurgery-related acute kidney injury is multifactorial and determined by different variables, including patient characteristics (comorbidities, volume status, age, pre-existing CKD), specific cancer type or location, surgical procedure involved, as well as intrinsic neuroendocrine and hemodynamic responses to anesthesia and/or surgery. Early nephrology evaluation may be helpful to assist with preservation of kidney function and prevention of further kidney injury.

Abstract
A 73-year-old woman with hypertension controlled by an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi) undergoes a laparoscopic converted to open low anterior resection with diverting loop ileostomy (DLI) for locally advanced rectal adenocarcinoma. On postoperative day 5, her serum creatinine (sCr) is 1.4 mg/dL compared to a baseline of 0.9 mg/dL. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are stopped, she is resuscitated with balanced crystalloid until her sCr returns to the nadir, and she is discharged. At her postoperative visit, she has mild tachycardia and reports 1 week of 1500 to 2000 mL/day of ileostomy output. She is admitted with an sCr of 2.4 mg/dL and a blood urea nitrogen of 50. She is discharged after infectious complications are excluded, her ileostomy output is controlled, and her sCr is 1.7 mg/dL. Before initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy, her sCr is 1.8 mg/dL, and her estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is 28 to 32 mL/minute/1.73m2. This severe renal impairment prompts dose reduction of adjuvant chemotherapy.

Abstract
AIM The aim was to characterize the incidence and short-term prognostic value of an acute kidney injury (AKI) during the admission where an ileostomy is formed. METHODS Adults with a baseline serum creatinine measurement discharged alive after ileostomy formation from 2014 to 2016 were included. All patients had daily basic metabolic panels and the Kidney Diseases Improving Global Outcomes criteria were used to determine the presence and severity of any AKI. Dehydration was defined by a single urine abnormality or clinical criteria combined with an objective abnormality in vitals or basic metabolic panels. RESULTS Of 262 patients, 19.4% sustained an AKI (74.5% Stage I, 15.7% Stage II, 9.8% Stage III) during the index admission. Predictors of incident AKI were increasing age, male sex, higher baseline creatinine and open surgery. Patients with AKI had significantly longer length of stay and 45% had creatinine <1.0 mg/dl at discharge. Of the total cohort, 11% were readmitted with dehydration and the independent predictors were AKI during the index admission, high ileostomy output, age >65 years, male sex and prior ileostomy. Of those readmitted with dehydration, 79% had AKI at readmission. CONCLUSIONS Nearly 20% of patients with ileostomies develop an AKI during the index admission with almost half resolving by discharge. Patients with AKIs are at high risk for 30-day dehydration-related readmission and AKI is present in nearly 80% of those readmitted with dehydration. Since AKI is objective, based on routine laboratory measures, and has known prognostic value it is probably a more robust outcome than dehydration for researchers, surgeons and patients.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal tumors remain a global health problem. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication during the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors. AKI can cause a decrease in the remission rate and an increase in mortality. In this review, we analyzed the causes and risk factors for AKI in gastrointestinal tumor patients. The possible mechanisms of AKI were divided into three groups: pretreatment, intrafraction and post-treatment causes. Treatment and prevention measures were proposed according to various factors to provide guidance to clinicians and oncologists that can reduce the incidence of AKI and improve the quality of life and survival rate of gastrointestinal tumor patients.

Abstract
Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies throughout the world, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Previous studies reported that serum creatinine (Scr) concentrations were associated with overall survival (OS) in cancer patients, but little is known about the association between Scr and OS in patients with CRC. This study investigated the relationship between Scr concentrations and OS in patients with CRC and examined possible effect modifiers. Methods A retrospective cohort, including 1,733 patients with CRC, was established from a multi-center clinical study. Patients were divided into low (<71 μmol/L in men or <59 μmol/L in women), normal (71-104 μmol/L in men or 59-85 μmol/L in women) and high (>104 μmol/L in men or >85 μmol/L in women) Scr groups. Cox regression analysis was used to examine association between Scr concentrations and OS. Stratified (subgroup) analyses were used to examine men and women separately. Interaction tests were used to evaluate associations between each variable and OS, as well as possible interactions of these variables with Scr levels. Cross-classified analyses were used only in men. Results Patients with low [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.43, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.19-1.72; P < 0.001] or high (HR = 1.89, 95% CI = 1.36-2.63; P < 0.001) Scr level had a significantly lower OS than patients with normal Scr levels. Significant interactions with Scr concentrations were observed for body mass index (P for interaction = 0.019) in men. Conclusion Low or high Scr concentration is associated with significantly lower OS in patients with CRC. Future study is warranted to investigate the underlying mechanism.

Abstract
Background A laparoscopic approach is widely used in abdominal surgery. Although several studies have compared surgical and oncological outcomes between laparoscopic surgery (LS) and open surgery (OS) in rectal cancer patients, there have been few studies on postoperative renal outcomes. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 1,633 patients who underwent rectal cancer surgery between 2003 and 2017. Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) was diagnosed according to the serum creatinine criteria of the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes classification. Results Among the 1,633 patients, 1,072 (65.6%) underwent LS. After matching propensity scores, 395 patients were included in each group. The incidence of postoperative AKI in the LS group was significantly lower than in the OS group (9.9% vs. 15.9%; p = 0.01). Operation time, estimated blood loss, and incidence of transfusion in the LS group were significantly lower than those in the OS group. Cox proportional hazard models revealed that LS was associated with decreased risk of postoperative AKI (hazard ratio [HR], 0.599; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.402–0.893; p = 0.01) and postoperative transfusion was associated with increased risk of AKI (HR, 2.495; 95% CI, 1.529–4.072; p < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis, the incidence of postoperative AKI in patients with middle or high rectal cancer who underwent LS was much lower than in those who underwent OS (HR, 0.373; 95% CI, 0.197–0.705; p = 0.002). Conclusion This study showed that LS may have a favorable effect on the development of postoperative AKI in patients with rectal cancer.

Abstract
AIM We aimed to identify risk factors associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) and to analyse 1-year mortality after oncological surgery. METHODS We retrospectively included 434 adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after oncological surgery, and classified AKI according to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes criteria. We performed logistic regression and Cox regression analyses to evaluate AKI and mortality risk factors. RESULTS Sixty-one percent of patients (n = 264) developed AKI. Previous abdominal radiotherapy and abdominal surgical packing were independently associated with stage 2 and 3 AKI, with adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 2.6 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.3-5.5, p = .010) and OR of 2.6 (95% CI 1.2-5.5, p = .014), respectively. Other independent risk factors were: glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 ml/min/1.73m2 (OR 3.6, 95% CI 1.2-11.4, p = .028), abdominal surgery 2.6 (1.4-4.9, p = .003), intraoperative diuresis <1 ml/k/h (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.4-4.0, p = .001), sepsis (OR 2.5, 95% CI 1.3-4.6, p = .002) and mechanical ventilation at ICU admission (OR 7.7, 95% CI 3.2-18.6, p < .001). Stage 2 and stage 3 AKI were independently associated with 1-year mortality, with adjusted hazard ratios (HR) of 2.6 (95% CI 1.3-5.0, p = .005) and HR of 5.0 (95% CI 2.6-9.6, p < .001), respectively. Additionally, patients who had postsurgical AKI, had a lower eGFR at 1-year follow-up. These findings may be limited by the retrospective single centre design of our study. CONCLUSION In addition to the conventional risk factors, our results suggest that abdominal radiotherapy and abdominal surgical packing could be independent risk factors for AKI after oncological surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the incidence of postoperative AKI after open gynecologic surgery within ERAS, compare AKI in pre-ERAS and ERAS cohorts, and identify factors associated with AKI. METHODS We compared postoperative AKI in patients who underwent open gynecologic surgery at one institution before and after ERAS implementation. AKI was defined as acute risk, injury, or failure by RIFLE criteria. Pre-ERAS and ERAS cohorts were matched using propensity score analysis in a 1:1 fashion using the nearest neighbor technique. Chi-squared, Fisher's Exact, and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests were used. RESULTS Among 1334 ERAS and 191 pre-ERAS patients, postoperative AKI incidence was higher in the ERAS cohort (13.1% vs 5.8%, p = .004). In 166 matched pairs, ERAS patients had higher incidence (16.9% vs 5.4%, p < .001) and odds (OR 3.54, 95% CI 1.61-7.76) of AKI. Within ERAS, AKI was associated with older age (median age 65 vs 57, p < .001), Charlson Comorbidity Index score ≥ 3 (71.4% vs 57.9%, p < .001), and higher intraoperative estimated blood loss (400 vs 225 mL, p < .001), fluid administration (net fluid balance +1535 vs 1261 mL, p < .001), and hypotension lasting >5 min (41.7% vs 30.7%, p < .001). ERAS patients with AKI had longer hospital stays (median 4 vs 3 days, p < .001) and more readmissions (19% vs. 10%, p < .001) and grade 3+ complications (26% vs. 7%, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS The incidence and odds of postoperative AKI was higher after gynecologic surgery within ERAS, and patients with AKI were more likely to have complications. Potential strategies to prevent postoperative AKI include perioperative fluid and blood pressure optimization.

Association of Acute Kidney Injury Receiving Kidney Replacement Therapy With Prognosis of Critically Ill Patients With and Without Cancer: A Retrospective Study. Crit Care Med 2021; 49:1932-1942. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess outcomes of cancer patients receiving kidney replacement therapy due to acute kidney injury in ICUs and compare these with other patient groups receiving kidney replacement therapy in ICUs. DESIGN Retrospective registry analysis. SETTING Prospectively collected database of 296,424 ICU patients. PATIENTS Patients with and without solid cancer with acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy were identified and compared with those without acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy. INTERVENTIONS Descriptive statistics were used to ascertain prevalence of acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy and solid cancer in ICU patients. Association of acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy and cancer with prognosis was assessed using logistic regression analysis. To compare the attributable mortality of acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy, 20,154 noncancer patients and 2,411 cancer patients without acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy were matched with 12,827 noncancer patients and 1,079 cancer patients with acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Thirty-five thousand three hundred fifty-six ICU patients (11.9%) had solid cancer. Acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy was present in 1,408 (4.0%) cancer patients and 13,637 (5.2%) noncancer patients. Crude ICU and hospital mortality was higher in the cancer group (646 [45.9%] vs 4,674 [34.3%], p < 0.001, and 787 [55.9%] vs 5,935 [43.5%], p < 0.001). In multivariable logistic regression analyses, odds ratio (95% CI) for hospital mortality was 1.73 (1.62-1.85) for cancer compared with no cancer 3.57 (3.32-3.83) for acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy and 1.07 (0.86-1.33) for their interaction. In the matched subcohort, attributable hospital mortality of acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy was 56.7% in noncancer patients and 48.0% in cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS Occurrence rate of acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy and prognosis in ICU patients with solid cancer are comparable with other ICU patient groups. In cancer, acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy is associated with higher crude hospital mortality. However, the specific attributable mortality conveyed by acute kidney injury necessitating kidney replacement therapy is actually lower in cancer patients than in noncancer patients. Diagnosis of cancer per se does not justify withholding kidney replacement therapy.

Abstract
The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) has been reported to be associated with postoperative complications and prognosis in cancer surgery. However, few studies have evaluated the association between preoperative PNI and postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in colorectal cancer patients. This study evaluated association of preoperative PNI and postoperative AKI in patients who underwent colorectal cancer surgery. This study retrospectively analyzed 3543 patients who underwent colorectal cancer surgery between June 2008 and February 2012. The patients were classified into four groups by the quartile of PNI: Q1 (≤43.79), Q2 (43.79–47.79), Q3 (47.79–51.62), and Q4 (≥51.62). Multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess the risk factors for AKI and 1-year mortality. AKI was defined according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes classification (KDIGO) criteria. Additionally, we assessed surgical outcomes such as hospital stay, ICU admission, and postoperative complications. The incidence of postoperative AKI tended to increase in the Q1 group (13.4%, 9.2%, 9.4%, 8.8%). In the multivariate analysis, high preoperative PNI was significantly associated with low risk of postoperative AKI (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 0.96, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.93–0.99, p = 0.003) and low 1-year mortality (OR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.86–0.98, p = 0.011). Male sex, body mass index, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension were risk factors for AKI. The Q1 (≤43.79) group had poor surgical outcomes, such as postoperative AKI (OR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.18–1.95, p = 0.001), higher rates of ICU admission (OR: 3.13, 95% CI: 1.82–5.39, p < 0.001) and higher overall mortality (OR: 3.81, 95% CI: 1.86–7.79, p < 0.001). In conclusion, low preoperative PNI levels, especially in the Q1 (≤43.79), were significantly associated with postoperative AKI and surgical outcomes, such as hospital stay, postoperative ICU admission, and mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enhanced recovery programs (ERPs) for colorectal surgery bundle evidence-based measures to reduce complications, accelerate postoperative recovery, and improve the value of perioperative health care. Despite these successes, several recent studies have identified an association between ERPs and postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the association between ERPs for colorectal surgery and postoperative AKI. METHODOLOGY After conducting a search of major databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect), we conducted a meta-analysis of observational studies that reported on the association between ERPs and postoperative AKI. RESULTS Six observational studies (n = 4765 patients) comparing ERP (n = 2140) to conventional care (n = 2625) were included. Overall, ERP patients had a significantly greater odds of developing postoperative AKI (odds ratio [OR] = 1.98, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.31-3.00, P = .001) than those who received conventional care. There was no evidence of publication bias (Begg's test P = 1.0, Egger's P value = .95). CONCLUSIONS Based upon pooled results from observational studies, ERPs are associated with increased odds of developing postoperative AKI compared to conventional perioperative care. The mechanism for this effect is likely multifactorial. Additional research targeting high risk patient populations should evaluate the role of restrictive fluid administration, hemodynamic goals, and scheduled nephrotoxic agents in ERP protocols.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I) and angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB) users may be associated with increased mortality in patients with post-operative acute kidney injury (AKI), but data are limited. We studied whether users of ACE-I/ARBs with AKI after colorectal cancer surgery (CRC) were associated with increased 1-year mortality after AKI. METHODS This population-based cohort study in Northern Denmark included patients with AKI within 7 days after CRC surgery during 2005-2014. From reimbursed prescriptions, patients were classified as ACE-I/ARB current, former, or non-users. We computed the cumulative 30-day and 1-year mortality after AKI with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) using the Kaplan-Meier method (1-survival function). Hazard ratios (HRs) comparing mortality in current and former users with non-users were computed by Cox proportional hazards regression analyses, controlling for potential confounders. RESULTS We identified 10 713 CRC surgery patients. A total of 2000 patients had AKI and were included. Thirty-day mortality was 16.5% (95% CI 13.7-19.8), 16.2% (95% CI 11.3-22.8), and 13.4% (95% CI 11.6-15.4) for current, former, and non-users. Adjusted HR was 1.26 (95% CI 0.96-1.65) and 1.19 (95% CI 0.78-1.82) for current and former users compared with non-users. One-year mortality rates were 26.4% (95% CI 22.9-30.4), 29.8% (95% CI 23.2-37.8), and 24.7% (95% CI 22.4-27.2) in current, former, and non-users. Compared with non-users, the adjusted 1-year HR for death in current and former users were 1.29 (95% CI 0.96-1.73) and 1.11 (95% CI 0.91-1.35). CONCLUSION Based on our findings, current users of ACE-I/ARB may possibly have a small increase in mortality rate in the year after post-operative AKI, although the degree of certainty is low.

Abstract
PURPOSES Enhanced recovery pathways (ERPs) have been disseminated worldwide to improve the perioperative patient outcomes while lowering direct healthcare costs. Recent evidence has revealed a potential association between ERPs for colorectal surgery and acute kidney injury (AKI). We, therefore, sought to identify the risk factors associated with postoperative AKI among patients in an ERP for colorectal surgery. METHODS We analyzed the data resulting from a large multicenter, prospective cohort study of patients in an ERP for colorectal surgery. A multivariable analysis was performed to identify factors independently associated with postoperative AKI. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and contour representations were plotted for the diagnostic prediction analysis. RESULTS Among those patients included in the analysis (n = 1652), the overall incidence of postoperative AKI was 7.7% (95% CI 6.5-9.1%). After adjustment, the independent risk factors for AKI included age > 60 (OR 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.05), male gender (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.36-4.02), ASA III-IV (OR 2.43, 95% CI 1.39-4.26), CKD (OR 2.45, 95% CI 1.42-4.23), open surgical approach (OR 2.62, 95% CI 1.63-4.21) and serum albumin < 3.5 g/dL (OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.02-2.79). An ROC analysis revealed that the composite of albumin, creatinine and age was a strong predictor of postoperative AKI [area under the curve (AUC) 0.756; 95% CI 0.705-0.808]. CONCLUSION Postoperative AKI is common in the setting of ERPs for colorectal surgery and it is associated with a poor clinical outcome. Of those characteristics associated with postoperative AKI, one modifiable factor is a low preoperative albumin level. Screening for malnourished patients or optimizing the nutritional status may be a useful preoperative intervention to prevent postoperative AKI and associated complications.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to explore the relationship between serum magnesium (Mg) levels and incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with malignancy. Patients and Methods Hospitalized patients with malignancy between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015 in Zhongshan Hospital were recruited. All relevant data were extracted from the electronic database. Results All 99,845 patients were enrolled and 16,082 eligible patients were divided into three groups according to admission serum Mg levels in this study. Among them, 2383 (14.8%) cases were diagnosed as AKI. The incidence of AKI showed a V trend with the increase of serum Mg level. The effect of low serum Mg level on the onset of AKI seems to be greater than high serum Mg level. Patients with low serum Mg level spent a longer time in the hospital than those with normal serum Mg level and high serum Mg level. Further, multivariate logistic regression model was used to assess the importance of serum Mg level to influence AKI incidence. There was a higher AKI incidence in patients with magnesium level 0.66mmol/L or less (aOR=2.438, 95% CI=1.696, 3.505). Conclusion Low serum Mg level might be a independent risk factor for AKI in patients with malignancy. Appropriate clinical intervention for serum Mg disorder may contribute to decreasing the incidence of AKI and the possibility of poor outcomes in cancer patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE An enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol for colorectal cancer resection encourages perioperative euvolemic status, and zero-balance fluid therapy is recommended for low-risk patients. Recently, several studies have reported concerns of increased acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients within an ERAS protocol. In the present study, we investigated the impact of intraoperative zero-balance fluid therapy within an ERAS protocol on postoperative AKI. METHODS Patients who underwent elective surgery for primary colorectal cancer were divided into zero-balance and non-zero-balance fluid therapy groups according to intraoperative fluid amount and balance. After propensity score (PS) matching, 210 patients from each group were selected. Incidences of AKI were compared between the two groups according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes criteria. Postoperative kidney functions and surgical outcomes were also compared. RESULTS AKI was significantly higher in the zero-balance fluid therapy group compared to the non-zero-balance fluid therapy group (21.4% vs. 13.8%, p = 0.040) in PS-matched patients. The decrease in the estimated glomerular filtration rate on the day of surgery was significantly higher in the zero-balance fluid therapy group (- 5.9 mL/min/1.73 m2 vs. - 1.4 mL/min/1.73 m2, p = 0.005). There were no differences in general morbidity or mortality rate, although surgery-related complications were more common in the zero-balance group. CONCLUSIONS Despite the proven benefits of zero-balance fluid therapy in colorectal ERAS protocols, care should be taken to monitor for postoperative AKI. Further studies regarding the clinical significance of postoperative AKI occurrence and optimised intraoperative fluid therapy are needed in a colorectal ERAS setting.

Abstract
The L-Arginine/NO pathway is involved in carcinogenesis and immunity. Its diagnostic and prognostic value in colorectal cancer (CRC) was determined using tandem mass spectrometry in 199 individuals (137 with CRC) and, during a three-day follow up, in 60 patients undergoing colorectal surgery. Citrulline was decreased and asymmetric (ADMA) and symmetric (SDMA) dimethylarginines and dimethylamine (DMA) were increased in CRC. The DMA increase corresponded with CRC advancement while arginine, ADMA, and SDMA levels were higher in left-sided cancers. Arginine, citrulline, ADMA, and DMA dropped and SDMA increased post incision. Females experienced a more substantial drop in arginine. The arginine and ADMA dynamics depended on blood loss. The initial SDMA increase was higher in patients requiring transfusions. Postoperative dynamics in arginine and dimethylarginines differed in robot-assisted and open surgery. Concomitant SDMA, citrulline, and DMA quantification displayed a 92% accuracy in detecting CRC. Monitoring changes in arginine, ADMA, and SDMA in the early postoperative period predicted postoperative ileus with 84% and surgical site infections with 90% accuracy. Changes in ADMA predicted operative morbidity with 90% and anastomotic leakage with 77% accuracy. If positively validated, L-arginine/NO pathway metabolites may facilitate CRC screening and surveillance, support differential diagnosis, and assist in clinical decision-making regarding patients recovering from colorectal surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES It is unknown whether preoperative use of ACE inhibitors (ACE-I) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) affects the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) after colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery. We assessed the impact of preoperative ACE-I/ARB use on risk of AKI after CRC surgery. DESIGN Observational cohort study. Patients were divided into three exposure groups-current, former and non-users-through reimbursed prescriptions within 365 days before the surgery. AKI within 7 days after surgery was defined according to the current Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome consensus criteria. SETTING Population-based Danish medical databases. PARTICIPANTS A total of 9932 patients undergoing incident CRC surgery during 2005-2014 in northern Denmark were included through the Danish Colorectal Cancer Group Database. OUTCOME MEASURE We computed cumulative incidence proportions (risk) of AKI with 95% CIs for current, former and non-users of ACE-I/ARB, including death as a competing risk. We compared current and former users with non-users by computing adjusted risk ratios (aRRs) using log-binomial regression adjusted for demographics, comorbidities and CRC-related characteristics. We stratified the analyses of ACE-I/ARB users to address any difference in impact within relevant subgroups. RESULTS Twenty-one per cent were ACE-I/ARB current users, 6.4% former users and 72.3% non-users. The 7-day postoperative AKI risk for current, former and non-users was 26.4% (95% CI 24.6% to 28.3%), 25.2% (21.9% to 28.6%) and 17.8% (17.0% to 18.7%), respectively. The aRRs of AKI were 1.20 (1.09 to 1.32) and 1.16 (1.01 to 1.34) for current and former users, compared with non-users. The relative risk of AKI in current compared with non-users was consistent in all subgroups, except for higher aRR in patients with a history of hypertension. CONCLUSIONS Being a current or former user of ACE-I/ARBs is associated with an increased risk of postoperative AKI compared with non-users. Although it may not be a drug effect, users of ACE-I/ARBs should be considered a risk group for postoperative AKI.

Abstract
Unplanned readmissions heavily affect the cost of health care and are used as an indicator of performance. No clear data are available regarding beyond-total mesorectal excision (bTME) procedure. Aim of the study is to identify patient-related and surgery-related factors influencing the 30-day readmissions after bTME. Retrospective data were collected from 220 patients who underwent bTME procedures at single centre between 2006 and 2016. Patient-related and operative factors were assessed, including body mass index (BMI), age, gender, American Society of Anaesthesiologists' (ASA) score, preoperative stage, neo-adjuvant therapy, primary tumour vs recurrence, the extent of surgery. The readmission rate was 8.18%. No statistically significant association was found with BMI, ASA score, length of stay and stay in the intensive care unit, primary vs recurrent tumour or blood transfusions. Not quite statistically significant was the association with pelvic side wall dissection (OR 3.32, p = 0.054). Statistically significant factors included preoperative stage > IIIb (OR: 4.77, p = 0.002), neo-adjuvant therapy (OR: 0.13, p = 0.0006), age over 65 years (OR: 5.96, p = 0.0005), any re-intervention during the first admission (OR: 7.4, p = 0.0001), and any post-operative complication (OR: 9.01, p = 0.004). The readmission rate after beyond-TME procedure is influenced by patient-related factors as well as post-operative morbidity.
