Abstract
The current approach was designed to unearth the therapeutic potential of osteoblasts infusion, yielded from cultivating rat mesenchymal stem cells of bone marrow source in osteogenic differentiation media supplied with either hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HA-NPs), chitosan/hydroxyapatite nanomaterials (C/HA-NPs), or chitosan nanoparticles, in the osteoporotic rats. The successful migration of the osteoblasts to the diseased bones of rats in C/HA-NPs and HA-NPs groups was evidenced by PCR screening of the Y-linked sex-determining gene (SRY) in the femoral bone tissue. Serum bone biomarker levels and gene expression patterns of cathepsin K, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL), and osteoprotegerin (OPG) were assessed. Additionally, histological examination of the femoral bone tissues of rats was performed. The current outcomes revealed that osteoblast implantation, resulted from C/HA-NPs or HA-NPs group, significantly lessened bone sialoprotein level. In Addition, it yielded a significant decline in the gene expression patterns of cathepsin K, RANKL, and RANKL/OPG proportion as well as up-regulation in BMP-2 and Runx-2 gene expression levels as opposed to the untreated ovariectomized animals. Moreover, it could restrain bone resorption and refine bone histoarchitecture. Conclusively, this study sheds light on the therapeutic significance of osteoblasts transplantation in alleviating the intensity of the bone remodeling cycle, consequently representing a hopeful therapeutic approach for primary osteoporosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the role of estrogens in myofiber cross-sectional area (CSA) of the pubococcyegeus (Pcm) and iliococcygeus muscles (Icm). METHODS In Experiment 1, we excised the Pcm and Icm during the metestrus and proestrus stages of the estrous cycle to measure the myofiber CSA. In Experiment 2, we allocated other rats into the following groups: sham (Sh), ovariectomized (OVX), OVX plus 1,4,6-androstatriene-3,17-dione (ATD; OVX + ATD), an aromatase inhibitor, and OVX plus estradiol benzoate (OVX + EB). We carried out appropriate statistical tests to determine significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) in variables measured for both Experiments. RESULTS The Pcm myofiber CSA at proestrus was higher than at metestrus, while the Icm myofiber CSA did not change. Ovariectomy increased the Pcm myofiber CSA, which was exacerbated with the ATD administration. The EB supplementation successfully reversed the ovariectomy-induced enlargement of the CSA. No significant changes were detected for the Icm myofiber CSA. CONCLUSIONS Fluctuating ovarian steroid levels at the estrus cycle significantly influence the CSA myofiber of the Pcm but not that of the Icm. Estrogen actions, having a gonadal or extragonadal origin, influence importantly the CSA of the Pcm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone density resulting in increased fracture susceptibility. This research was constructed to uncover the potential therapeutic application of osteoblasts transplantation, generated upon culturing male rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) in osteogenic medium (OM), OM containing gold (Au-NPs) or gold/hydroxyapatite (Au/HA-NPs) nanoparticles, in ovariectomized rats to counteract osteoporosis. METHODS Forty rats were randomized into: (1) negative control, (2) osteoporotic rats, whereas groups (3), (4) and (5) constituted osteoporotic rats treated with osteoblasts yielded from culturing BM-MSCs in OM, OM plus Au-NPs or Au/HA-NPs, respectively. After 3 months, osterix (OSX), bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP), sclerostin (SOST) and bone sialoprotein (BSP) serum levels were assessed. In addition, gene expression levels of cathepsin K, receptor activator of nuclear factor-κb ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG) and RANKL/OPG ratio were evaluated using real-time PCR. Moreover, histological investigation of femur bone tissues in different groups was performed. The homing of implanted osteoblasts to the osteoporotic femur bone of rats was documented by Sex determining region Y gene detection in bone tissue. RESULTS Our results indicated that osteoblasts infusion significantly blunted serum BALP, BSP and SOST levels, while significantly elevated OSX level. Also, they brought about significant down-regulation in gene expression levels of cathepsin K, RANKL and RANKL/OPG ratio versus untreated osteoporotic rats. Additionally, osteoblasts nidation could restore bone histoarchitecture. CONCLUSION These findings offer scientific evidence that transplanting osteoblasts in osteoporotic rats regains the homeostasis of the bone remodeling cycle, thus providing a promising treatment strategy for primary osteoporosis.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate whether 17β-estradiol (E2) exerts protective effects on bone deterioration induced by ovariectomy (OVX) through the ephA2/ephrinA2 signaling pathway in rats. Female rats were subjected to OVX, sham surgeryor OVX+E2 treatment. Levels of biomarkers were measured in serum and urine. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed on paraffin-embedded bone sections. Expression of genes and proteins was analyzed by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, respectively. Bone mineral density (BMD) was analyzed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Trabecular bone microarchitecture was also evaluated. Osteoclastogenesis was induced by in vitro culturing with mouse receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL) and macrophage colony-stimulating factor 1. small interfering RNA was designed to knockdown ehpA2 receptor and its ligand ephrinA2. Results of the present study demonstrated that E2 had suppressive effects on OVX-induced body weight gain and bone turnover factors in serum and urine. E2 inhibited the bone resorption function of osteoclasts by inhibiting the production of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b and RANKL, and induced bone formation function of osteoblasts by prompting runt-related transcription factor 2, Sp7 transcription factor and collagen alpha-1(I) chain expression in bone marrow cells. E2 treatment significantly increased the tibia BMD and prevented the deterioration of trabecular microarchitecture compared with the OVX group. Moreover, E2 significantly decreased the OVX-stimulated expression of ephA2 and ephrinA2. EphA2 or ephrin A2 knockdown significantly suppressed osteoclastogenesis in vitro. In conclusion, E2 can attenuate OVX-induced bone deterioration partially through the suppression of the ephA2/ephrinA2 signaling pathway. Therefore EphA2/ephrinA2 signaling pathway may be a potential target for osteoporosis treatment.

Abstract
Although aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are commonly used therapies for breast cancer, their use is limited because they produce arthralgia in a large number of patients. To determine whether AIs produce hypersensitivity in animal models of pain, we examined the effects of the AI, letrozole, on mechanical, thermal, and chemical sensitivity in rats. In ovariectomized (OVX) rats, administering a single dose of 1 or 5mg/kg letrozole significantly reduced mechanical paw withdrawal thresholds, without altering thermal sensitivity. Repeated injection of 5mg/kg letrozole in male rats produced mechanical, but not thermal, hypersensitivity that extinguished when drug dosing was stopped. A single dose of 5mg/kg letrozole or daily dosing of letrozole or exemestane in male rats also augmented flinching behavior induced by intraplantar injection of 1000nmol of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP). To determine whether sensitization of sensory neurons contributed to AI-induced hypersensitivity, we evaluated the excitability of neurons isolated from dorsal root ganglia of male rats chronically treated with letrozole. Both small and medium-diameter sensory neurons isolated from letrozole-treated rats were more excitable, as reflected by increased action potential firing in response to a ramp of depolarizing current, a lower resting membrane potential, and a lower rheobase. However, systemic letrozole treatment did not augment the stimulus-evoked release of the neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) from spinal cord slices, suggesting that the enhanced nociceptive responses were not secondary to an increase in peptide release from sensory endings in the spinal cord. These results provide the first evidence that AIs modulate the excitability of sensory neurons, which may be a primary mechanism for the effect of these drugs to augment pain behaviors in rats.

Abstract
Study Design Randomized, controlled animal study. Objective Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) is frequently utilized as a bone graft substitute in spinal fusions to overcome the difficult healing environment in patients with osteoporosis. However, the effects of estrogen deficiency and poor bone quality on rhBMP-2 efficacy are unknown. This study sought to determine whether rhBMP-2-induced healing is affected by estrogen deficiency and poor bone quality in a stringent osteoporotic posterolateral spinal fusion model. Methods Aged female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent an ovariectomy (OVX group) or a sham procedure, and the OVX animals were fed a low-calcium, low-phytoestrogen diet. After 12 weeks, the animals underwent a posterolateral spinal fusion with 1 μg rhBMP-2 on an absorbable collagen sponge. Representative animals were sacrificed at 1 week postoperative for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin serum analyses. The remaining animals underwent radiographs 2 and 4 weeks after surgery and were subsequently euthanized for fusion analysis by manual palpation, micro-computed tomography (CT) imaging, and histologic analysis. Results The ALP and osteocalcin levels were similar between the control and OVX groups. Manual palpation revealed no significant differences in the fusion scores between the control (1.42 ± 0.50) and OVX groups (1.83 ± 0.36; p = 0.07). Fusion rates were 100% in both groups. Micro-CT imaging revealed no significant difference in the quantity of new bone formation, and histologic analysis demonstrated bridging bone across the transverse processes in fused animals from both groups. Conclusions This study demonstrates that estrogen deficiency and compromised bone quality do not negatively influence spinal fusion when utilizing rhBMP-2, and the osteoinductive capacity of the growth factor is not functionally reduced under osteoporotic conditions in the rat. Although osteoporosis is a risk factor for pseudarthrosis/nonunion, rhBMP-2-induced healing was not inhibited in osteoporotic rats.

Abstract
Menopause is associated with higher plasma and liver triacylglycerol (TAG) and increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Lowering TAG in menopause may be beneficial; however, the mechanism underlying menopause-induced TAG accumulation is not clear. Ovariectomy is a model for menopause and is associated with metabolic alterations and hyperphagia. This study investigated the role of hyperphagia in ovariectomy-induced increases in blood and tissue TAG, as well as differences in lipid metabolism enzymes and resting metabolic measures. It was hypothesized that prevention of hyperphagia would restore blood and tissue TAG, enzyme expression, and metabolic measures to eugonadal levels. Ovariectomized rats were fed ad libitum (OVX + AL) or pair-fed (OVX + PF) relative to sham-operated rats (SHAM) to prevent hyperphagia. OVX + AL had higher TAG concentrations in liver and plasma than SHAM (60% and 50%, respectively), and prevention of hyperphagia in OVX + PF normalized TAG concentrations to SHAM levels in liver, but not plasma. OVX + AL also had 141% higher hepatic stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 which was almost completely normalized to SHAM levels by pair-feeding, suggesting normalization of hepatic lipid storage. In contrast, skeletal muscle carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1 was 40% lower in OVX + AL than SHAM and was intermediate in OVX + PF, suggesting lower muscle fatty acid oxidation that may underlie the higher plasma TAG in OVX. No differences were seen in energy expenditure, VO2, or VCO2. Overall, this study indicates that prevention of hyperphagia resulting from ovarian hormone withdrawal normalizes hepatic TAG to eugonadal levels but has no effect on ovariectomy-induced increases in plasma TAG.

Abstract
Bone loss occurs insidiously and initially asymptomatically; therefore, osteoporosis is frequently diagnosed only after the first clinical fracture. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis is that by simply observing the behavior of cultured peripheral monocytes, it might be possible to diagnose altered bone remodeling and, therefore, limit the complications associated with osteoporosis, especially fractures. Monocytes isolated as mononuclear precursors from healthy and ovariectomized rats were cultured both in basal and differentiation medium for up to 3 weeks. Viability and differentiation capability towards the osteoclastic phenotype was checked by light microscopy at early times, whereas differentiation state and synthetic activity (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining; phalloidin, fluorescin isothiocynate (FITC) staining, cathepsin K, metalloproteinase 7 and 9, MMP-7 and MMP-9) were measured at 1, 2, and 3 weeks. Compared to their controls, monocytes isolated from ovariectomized rats proliferate and lean toward the osteoclastic phenotype in the absence of differentiating factors. In both culture conditions, osteoclasts from ovariectomized rats showed significantly higher productions of cathepsin K, MMP-7, and MMP-9 than those of cells isolated from healthy rats, steadily over time. These results obtained in an animal osteoporotic model, if confirmed by clinical studies, open up the possibility to assess the presence of an alteration in bone remodeling with a simple in vitro diagnostic test requiring a small blood sample and less than 48 h. This might allow to early select patients with a spontaneous viability and differentiation of monocytes to osteoclasts for further diagnostic techniques.

Abstract
In order to standardize an experimental model to study the effects of absence of ovarian hormones in maxillary bones compared with long bones, the aim of this research was to analyze the influence of ovariectomy (OVX) on rat alveolar bone and tibiae, in different observation periods. Thirty-six female rats were ovariectomized or sham operated. After 60, 90 or 120 days, the animals were sacrificed and their hemimandibles, maxillae and tibiae were removed and routinely prepared for hematoxylin and eosin staining. The percentage of bone matrix area in bone septum in the first molar furcation region, and in tibial metaphysis was calculated, and data were submitted to statistical analysis (p<0.05). As regards the histomorphometrical analysis in jaw bones, there was no statistical difference between groups, while the effects of ovariectomy on tibiae were seen as early as 60 days. According to the methods used, there was no significant influence of absence of ovarian hormones on interradicular septum of mandibular or maxillary first molars in the periods studied, despite the reduction in bone matrix area in tibia metaphysis as early as 60 days.

Abstract
Cognitive dysfunction, as a consequence of dementia, is a significant cause of morbidity lacking efficacious treatment. Females comprise at least half of this demographic but have been vastly underrepresented in preclinical studies. The current study addressed this gap by assessing the protective efficacy of physical exercise and cognitive activity on learning and memory outcomes in a rat model of vascular dementia. Forty ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats (∼6 months old) were exposed to either a diet high in saturated fats and refined sugars or standard laboratory chow and underwent either chronic bilateral carotid occlusion or Sham surgery. Learning and memory abilities were evaluated using standard cognitive outcomes over the ensuing 6 months, followed by histologic analyses of hippocampal CA1 neurons. In Experiment 1, we confirmed hypoperfusion-induced cognitive dysfunction using a 2 × 2 (Surgery × Diet) experimental design, without alterations in hippocampal architecture. In Experiment 2, hypoperfused animals were either exposed to alternating days of physical (wheel running) and cognitive activity (modified Hebb-Williams maze) or sedentary housing. In contrast to males, this combination rehabilitation paradigm did not improve cognition or histopathologic outcomes in hypoperfused animals. These findings, highlighting differences between female and male animals, show the necessity of including both sexes in preclinical experimentation.

Abstract
Diminished estrogen influence at menopause is reported to be associated with cognitive decline, heightened anxiety and hypertension. While estrogen therapy is often prescribed to overcome these behavioral and physiological deficits, antioxidants which have been shown beneficial are gaining nutritional intervention and popularity. Therefore, in the present study, utilizing the antioxidant properties of grapes, we have examined effect of 3 weeks of grape powder (GP; 15 g/L dissolved in tap water) treatment on anxiety-like behavior, learning-memory impairment and high blood pressure in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Four groups of female Wistar rats were used; sham control, sham-GP treated, OVX and OVX+GP treated. We observed a significant increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in OVX rats as compared to sham-controls. Furthermore, ovariectomy increased anxiety-like behavior and caused learning and memory impairment in rats as compared to sham-controls. Interestingly, providing grape powder treated water to OVX rats restored both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, decreased anxiety-like behavior and improved memory function. Moreover, OVX rats exhibited an impaired long term potentiation which was restored with grape powder treatment. Furthermore, ovariectomy increased oxidative stress in the brain, serum and urine, selectively decreasing antioxidant enzyme, glyoxalase-1 protein expression in the hippocampus but not in the cortex and amygdala of OVX rats, while grape powder treatment reversed these effects. Other antioxidant enzyme levels, including manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Cu/Zn SOD remained unchanged. We suggest that grape powder by regulating oxidative stress mechanisms exerts its protective effect on blood pressure, learning-memory and anxiety-like behavior. Our study is the first to examine behavioral, biochemical, physiological and electrophysiological outcome of estrogen depletion in rats and to test protective role of grape powder, all in the same study.

Abstract
Sex differences in monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) levels suggest ovarian hormones may affect MUFA biosynthesis. Sprague-Dawley rats (8 weeks of age) were ovariectomized or sham operated with ovariectomized rats implanted with a constant-release hormone pellet providing 17β-estradiol, progesterone, both or neither at 10 weeks of age. After 14 days, rats were fasted overnight and sacrificed to collect plasma and livers for analysis. Hepatic stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD1) expression was unchanged between ovariectomized and sham controls, as determined by microarray and immunoblotting. However, SCD1 protein was increased in rats treated with estradiol plus progesterone. Elongase 6 protein levels were increased with 17β-estradiol treatment compared with sham. Rats treated with 17β-estradiol and 17β-estradiol plus progesterone had increased 16:0, 18:0, 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-7 in hepatic and plasma phospholipids. Ovarian hormones appear to be involved with MUFA biosynthesis, but the relationship appears complex and involves elongase 6 and SCD1.

Abstract
Secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG), a predominant lignan in flaxseed, has antioxidant activity as a dietary supplement. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the antidepressant-like effect and the possible mechanism of flaxseed SDG when the ovariectomized mice were exposed to the unpredictable chronic mild stress procedure. Chronic stress induced the increases in immobility time in mouse model of despair tests, but administration with SDG (80 and 160 mg/kg, p.o.) for 21 days inhibited these behavioral changes caused by stress in both forced swimming and tail suspension tests. These doses that affected the immobile response did not affect locomotor activity. Moreover, the changes in the serum corticosterone and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels were also measured to explore the SDG-associated regulation of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenals (HPA) axis. The results indicated that the chronic stress-induced increases in the serum corticosterone and ACTH were reversed by treatment with high doses of SDG. Chronic treatment with SDG also affected the body weight of mice and IL-6, IL1β levels in the frontal cortex. In addition, chronic stress procedure induced a decrease in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the frontal cortex of mice; while treatment with SDG reversed this reduction of BDNF. All these results provide compelling evidence that the behavioral effects of flaxseed SDG in the ovariectomized mice might be related to their modulating effects on the neuroendocrine-immune network and neurotrophin factor expression.

Abstract
Sexual dimorphism has been previously found both in mitochondrial biogenesis and function and in adiponectin expression of retroperitoneal WAT. However, little is known about the E2 effects on WAT mitochondrial function. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to examine in greater depth the role of estrogens in sexual dimorphism. This was accomplished by studying the effects of ovariectomy and E2 replacement on retroperitoneal WAT mitochondrial function. Fourteen-week-old female and ovariectomized (OVX) female Wistar rats were used in this study. The ovariectomy was performed at 5 weeks of age and at 10 weeks of age OVX rats were divided into two experimental groups: OVX, and OVX treated with 17β-estradiol (E2) (OVX+E2). Subcutaneous injections of E2 (10 μg/kg/48 h) were administered to the OVX+E2 rats for 4 weeks previous to the sacrifice whereas OVX rats were treated only with the vehicle. Levels of the main markers for mitochondrial biogenesis and function and those representatives of the antioxidant defense system and insulin sensitivity were determined. Additionally, the mRNA levels of the α and β estrogen receptors and of some adipocyte differentiation markers were studied. Our results indicate that retroperitoneal WAT was able to adapt itself to ovariectomy without any changes in mitochondrial function markers or for the adiponectin levels. However, E2 supplementation led to an unexpected decrease in: TFAM protein levels, in LPL, PPARγ and adiponectin gene expression and in the systemic HMW adiponectin levels. This decrease is probably due to the down-regulation of the ERα mRNA expression to avoid an over-stimulation by E2.

Abstract
Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) affects millions of people worldwide and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. However, fewer than 10% of heavy drinkers progress to later stages of injury, suggesting other factors in ALD development, including environmental exposures and genetics. Females display greater susceptibility to the early damaging effects of ethanol. Estrogen (E2) and ethanol metabolizing enzymes (cytochrome P450, CYP450) are implicated in sex differences of ALD. Sex steroid hormones are developmentally regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which controls sex-specific cycling of gonadal steroid production and expression of hepatic enzymes. The aim of this study was to determine if early postnatal inhibition of adult cyclic E2 alters ethanol metabolizing enzyme expression contributing to the development of ALD in adulthood. An androgenized rat model was used to inhibit cyclic E2 production. Control females (Ctrl), androgenized females (Andro) and Andro females with E2 implants were administered either an ethanol or isocalorically-matched control Lieber-DeCarli diet for four weeks and liver injury and CYP450 expression assessed. Androgenization exacerbated the deleterious effects of ethanol demonstrated by increased steatosis, lipid peroxidation, profibrotic gene expression and decreased antioxidant defenses compared to Ctrl. Additionally, CYP2E1 expression was down-regulated in Andro animals on both diets. No change was observed in CYP1A2 protein expression. Further, continuous exogenous administration of E2 to Andro in adulthood attenuated these effects, suggesting that E2 has protective effects in the androgenized animal. Therefore, early postnatal inhibition of cyclic E2 modulates development and progression of ALD in adulthood.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sex hormones underlie the lower incidence of cardiovascular disease in premenopausal women. Vascular inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of several cardiovascular diseases and it has been reported that sex hormones modulate inflammatory responses but mechanisms responsible for these effects are not yet fully established. Herein, we assessed whether sex differences in leukocyte recruitment might exist and investigated the underlying mechanisms involved in this response. METHODS AND RESULTS Treatment with interleukin-1β (IL-1β) or tumor necrosis factor-α caused leukocyte rolling, adhesion, and emigration in mesenteric postcapillary venules in vivo that was substantially reduced in female mice compared with male mice; this difference was abolished by ovariectomy and partially restored by estrogen replacement. Deletion of endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase or cyclooxygenase-1 alone or in combination did not alter the leukocyte recruitment in IL-1β-treated females but significantly enhanced this response in male mice. Treatment of murine pulmonary endothelial cells with IL-1β increased expression of P-selectin in male but not female cells. CONCLUSIONS We have demonstrated a profound estrogen-dependent and NO and prostacyclin-independent suppression of leukocyte recruitment in females.

Abstract
The low incidence of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, in premenopausal women has led to the conclusion that ovarian hormones may have a protective effect on the cardiovascular system. We evaluated the effects of ovariectomy and/or estradiol on sympathovagal balance and heart rate variability (HRV) in female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with tachycardia and compared them to Wistar rats (12 weeks old; N = 8-12). Ovariectomy (OVX) and/or estradiol (10 µg/kg) did not affect basal arterial pressure in either rat strain, but estradiol increased basal heart rate (HR) in OVX SHR (454 ± 18 vs 377 ± 9 bpm). HR changes elicited by methylatropine and propranolol were used to evaluate the sympathovagal balance. Ovariectomy did not affect the cardiac sympathovagal balance of any group, while estradiol increased sympathetic tone in OVX SHR (120 ± 8 vs 56 ± 10 bpm) and sham-operated Wistar rats (57 ± 7 vs 28 ± 4 bpm), and decreased the parasympathetic tone only in OVX SHR (26 ± 7 vs 37 ± 5 bpm). HRV was studied in the frequency domain (Fast Fourier Transformation). Spectra of HR series were examined at low frequency (LF: 0.2-0.75 Hz) and high frequency (HF: 0.75-3 Hz) bands. The power of LF, as well as the LF/HF ratio, was not affected by ovariectomy, but estradiol increased both LF (29 ± 4 vs 18 ± 3 nu in Wistar sham-operated, 26 ± 5 vs 15 ± 3 nu in Wistar OVX, 50 ± 3 vs 38 ± 4 nu in SHR sham-operated, and 51 ± 3 vs 42 ± 3 nu in SHR OVX) and LF/HF (0.48 ± 0.08 vs 0.23 ± 0.03 nu in Wistar sham-operated, 0.41 ± 0.14 vs 0.19 ± 0.05 nu in Wistar OVX, 0.98 ± 0.11 vs 0.63 ± 0.11 nu in SHR sham-operated, and 1.10 ± 0.11 vs 0.78 ± 0.1 nu in SHR OVX). Thus, we suggest that ovariectomy did not affect the cardiac sympathovagal balance of SHR or Wistar rats, while estradiol increased the sympathetic modulation of HR.

Abstract
Sex differences in cocaine addiction warrants further research focused on examining the growing population of female cocaine addicts. As demonstrated in both clinical and preclinical research, females are more susceptible to drug relapse with anxiety being a contributing factor. In support of this, a recent clinical study from our laboratory highlights the importance of menstrual cycle phase and anxiety at treatment admission for cocaine addiction on treatment retention. In support of these trends in the clinical population, the purpose of the present study was to design an animal model to directly test the role of circulating hormone levels during cocaine withdrawal. To directly measure the influence of estrogen on anxiety-like behavior during early stages of withdrawal, both ovariectomized and intact female rodent models were employed. The elevated-plus maze and elevated-zero maze were used to assess anxiety-like behavior. Recent evidence in male rodents highlights a potential role for the delta opioid-receptor (DOR) system in the modulation of cocaine withdrawal-induced anxiety. In addition to the evaluation of hormonal effects, a potential anxiolytic specific for DOR was tested for its efficacy in females withdrawn from cocaine. Our results support the use of DOR agonists as a potential anxiolytic in females and highlight the importance of estrogen and other circulating hormones during all phases of cocaine addiction.

Abstract
Previously we reported that prepubertally ovariectomized mice that received young, transplanted ovaries at a postreproductive age displayed a 40% increase in life expectancy. To study this increase in life expectancy in greater detail, prepubertally ovariectomized and ovary-intact CBA/J mice underwent ovarian transplantation at 11 months with 60-day-old ovaries or a sham surgery. Life span was significantly increased in transplant recipients. Body-weight changes of mice in each group were measured from the time of surgery (11 months) to death. Neither ovariectomy nor ovarian transplantation influenced the amount of peak body-weight attained or body-weight retained at death. However, the time (days) to peak body-weight was decreased by ovariectomy and ovarian transplant recipients displayed a trend toward an increase in time to peak weight. In addition, ovarian transplantation decreased the rate of weight loss to death. These results demonstrate that ovarian status, examined by means of ovariectomy and ovarian transplantation, clearly influenced the rate of weight change, but not the total amount of weight gain or loss in female mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postmenopausal women are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease (CVD) than premenopausal women. Increased vasoconstriction in the peripheral vasculature may underlie this risk. In vascular smooth muscle, cytochrome P450 4A (CYP4A) enzymes form the vasoconstrictor 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE). CYP4A modulation of alpha(1)-adrenergic vasoconstriction is increased in aging male rats; however, this pathway has not been investigated in aging females. To generate an appropriate model of menopause, we ovariectomized aged Sprague-Dawley rats to create an aged, ovarian-depleted phenotype. Because estrogen has profound effects on the peripheral vasculature, we also determined the effect of estrogen replacement on CYP4A modulation of vasoconstriction. METHODS Aged (15-16 months) rats were assigned to be intact or ovariectomized. Ovariectomized rats received either placebo (OVX) or 17beta-estradiol (OVX-E) subcutaneously for 4 weeks. Mesenteric arteries were isolated and constricted with the alpha(1)-adrenergic agonist phenylephrine or intraluminal pressure in the absence or presence of the CYP4A inhibitor, DDMS. RESULTS Ovariectomy increased CYP4A modulation of alpha(1)-adrenergic vasoconstriction. This was unaffected by estrogen replacement. Arteries from OVX-E animals exhibited increased phenylephrine sensitivity and forced dilation relative to arteries from intact and OVX animals. Myogenic tone was increased in both OVX and OVX-E animals relative to intact rats; however, CYP4A inhibition had no effect on myogenic tone in any group. CONCLUSIONS In aged female rats, ovariectomy caused an increase in CYP4A modulation of alpha(1)-adrenergic vasoconstriction that was not prevented by estrogen replacement. Future study of these pathways may provide important targets for the prevention of CVD in aging women.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Posterolateral intertransverse process spinal fusion (PLF) was performed in ovariectomized female rats using recombinant human BMP-7 (OP-1) delivered on a composite carrier. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether BMP-7 collagen on a composite carrier in a higher dose will enhance posterolateral spinal fusion in an estrogen deficiency rat model. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Osteoporosis is a systemic disease characterized by bone remodeling skewed in favor of excess bone resorption. This makes new bone formation and fixation of metallic implants difficult. Thus, treating osteoporotic patients who require posterior spinal fusion is challenging. Ovariectomized rats have been used as an osteoporotic model for posterolateral intertransverse process fusion. We have demonstrated in the past that endochondral bone formation in osteoporotic rats is delayed when compared with rats without osteoporosis. We have also shown that OP-1 Putty (BMP-7, collagen, and carboxy-methyl-cellulose) can overcome the effects of osteoporosis in a rat fracture model. However, it has not yet been demonstrated whether BMP-7 collagen composite carrier (Calstrux) can achieve a fusion in a process spinal fusion model in osteoporotic bone. METHODS A total of 42 ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly assigned to 4 control and 2 experimental groups: (1) no Calstrux, no BMP; (2) 400 mg Calstrux alone; (3) 30 microg lactose + 400 mg Calstrux; (4) 90 microg lactose + 400 mg Calstrux; (5) 30 microg rhBMP-7 + 400 mg Calstrux; and (6) 90 microg rhBMP-7 + 400 mg Calstrux. Spinal fusion was evaluated by manual motion testing, microradiographs, computed tomographic scans, DEXA scans, and histology. RESULTS Ovariectomized rats receiving Calstrux alone or either dose of lactose and Calstrux did not show spinal fusion. Ovariectomized rats receiving 90 microg BMP-7 + 400 mg Calstrux showed significantly higher fusion rates than these control animals. (P < 0.0001). The rats receiving 30 microg BMP-7 + 400 mg Calstrux exhibited only partial fusion. CONCLUSION BMP-7, delivered on a composite carrier, is able to overcome the detrimental effects of estrogen deficiency on posterolateral spinal fusion and generate a relatively robust fusion. The effect seems to be dose dependent.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of ovariectomy-induced estrogen deficiency as a risk factor of periodontal disease in rats. Forty 90-day old female rats were either ovariectomized (OVX; n=20) or sham operated (SHAM; n=20). After 30 days, periodontitis was induced by placement of a cotton ligature around the upper second molars of 10 OVX and 10 SHAM animals. All animals were sacrificed 5 weeks later. Body weight was assessed before all surgical procedures. The left hemimaxillas were removed and the percentage of periodontal bone support was determined radiographically and buccal alveolar bone loss was determined macroscopically using an image-analysis software. Furcation involvement was also evaluated. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA at 5% significance level. Within the evaluated period, the ovariectomized rats gained more weight than the sham-operated animals (p<0.001). The animals in which periodontitis was induced had less bone support, greater alveolar bone loss and furcation involvement than those without ligature (p<0.001). However, there was no difference between ovariectomized and sham-operated animals (p>0.05). Based on the findings of this study, estrogen deficiency could not be considered as a risk factor for periodontal disease.

Abstract
Low oestradiol levels in women are associated with decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk. The third-generation aromatase inhibitors (AIs; anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane) are used in the treatment of early and advanced breast cancer and act by substantially reducing oestrogen synthesis in postmenopausal women. However, due to their mechanism of action, there is concern regarding the long-term effects of these agents on bone, particularly when used in the adjuvant setting. In this paper, the currently available data on the effects of the third-generation AIs on markers of bone turnover, BMD, and fracture risk are reviewed, with the emphasis on results in the adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer. These data suggest that both the steroidal (exemestane) and non-steroidal (anastrozole and letrozole) AIs appear to affect bone turnover. Conclusions regarding any clinically relevant differences between these agents are difficult to make, and further data are awaited from long-term adjuvant use of these three agents in ongoing clinical studies. Postmenopausal women are at increased risk of osteoporosis and fracture, and the increasing use of AIs in the adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal breast cancer patients will require appropriate consideration of fracture risk, with the use of anti-osteoporotic therapies, if necessary.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Intertransverse process spinal fusion using recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7 (rhBMP-7) was performed in intact and ovariectomized female rats. OBJECTIVES To examine fusion rates in intact and ovariectomized female rats using rhBMP-7 to determine if spine fusion is dependent on estrogen status. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Rat spinal fusion has been established as a consistent, efficient model for posterolateral intertransverse process fusion. Previous experiments have confirmed the efficacy of pellets containing the carrier, insoluble collagen bone matrix (ICBM), and rhBMP-7 to augment intertransverse process single level fusion in a rat model. Studying these implications in an osteoporosis model is of clinical value because there are many patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery that have osteoporotic bone disease, and there is a steady increase in this group of patients. METHODS A total of 15 ovariectomized and 15 intact Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly assigned to groups receiving 25 mg ICBM alone, 25 mg ICBM + 10 microg rhBMP-7, and 25 mg ICBM + 30 microg rhBMP-7. Spinal fusion was evaluated by manual motion testing at each lumbar segment, radiographic evaluation using the Lenke grading system, and histology. RESULTS Ovariectomized and intact rats receiving 25 mg carrier ICBM alone did not show spinal fusion. With 25 mg ICBM + 10 microg rhBMP-7, there was not a significant difference in fusion rates between intact and ovariectomized rats (P = 0.63). Ovariectomized rats receiving 25 mg ICBM + 30 microg rhBMP-7 showed significantly lower fusion rates than intact rats (P = 0.013). CONCLUSION These data suggest that spinal fusion using rhBMP-7 is estrogen-dependent in rats. At the dosages used, rhBMP-7 was unable to overcome the inhibitory effects of estrogen deficiency on spinal fusion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The circulating estrogen concentration elevated gradually along with time after ovariectomy in rats. To explore the source of the increased circulation estrogen, the extragonadal aromatization as well as the synthesis of androgen in the adrenal cortex of the ovariectomized rats was evaluated. METHODS Female rats were divided into twelve groups: 1 month after ovariectomy (OVX1M), OVX2M, OVX3M, OVX4M, OVX5M, OVX6M; intact 1 month (INT1M), INT2M, INT3M, INT4M, INT5M, INT6M. The blood concentration of testosterone (T) was measured by radioimmunoassay. The mRNA expressions of P450 aromatase in the liver and subcutaneous abdominal (SA) adipose as well as the adrenal cytochrome P450 17 alpha hydroxylase/lyase (P450c17) were semiquantified by RT-PCR. The P450 aromatase protein expressions in the liver and SA adipose were detected by Western blot. RESULTS The blood E2 concentrations increased gradually along with time after ovariectomy in the rats. The 58-kDa aromatase protein and mRNA expressions normalized to beta-actin in the OVX6M rats' SA adipose tissues showed higher levels than those from corresponding tissues in the INT6M (p < 0.05). And the ratios of aromatase mRNA and protein to beta-actin in the OVX6M rats' liver tissues increased significantly compared with those in the OVX1M rats (p < 0.05). The ratio of adrenal P450c17 to beta-actin in the OVX6M increased markedly, and was higher than OVX1M (p < 0.05), though the blood concentration of T decreased significantly in all the ovariectomized rats (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Both the subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissues and the liver tissues contributed to the extragonadal aromatisation to promote the circulating E2 levels in the rats along with time after ovariectomy; the adrenal compensation might also be activated naturally.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Oxidant stress contributes to vascular injury and atherosclerosis. We hypothesized that estrogen treatment of ovariectomized rats decreases O(2)(-) by decreasing the activity of NAD(P)H oxidase and this reduction in O(2)(-) could have a vasculoprotective effect. METHODS AND RESULTS Ovariectomized rats were treated with 17-beta-estradiol E2 (0.25mg) or oil placebo for 21 days. Aorta were removed for contractility studies and O(2)(-) production was measured by lucigenin enhanced chemiluminescence (230 and 5microM). E2 treatment decreased basal O(2)(-) production but did not alter NADH or NADPH stimulated O(2)(-) production. Total p47phox and p47phox in membrane fractions of cardiac tissue were decreased, which suggests less activation of NAD(P)H oxidase in E2 treated rats. E2 did not change expression of other components of NAD(P)H oxidase in heart, lung, spleen and diaphragm. Expression of eNOS was also lower in E2 treated rats. E2 did not affect the contractile response to phenylepherine, dilation with acetylcholine, dilation with superoxide dismutase or constriction with l-NAME. This argues against changes in bioavailable NO. CONCLUSIONS E2 decreases activation of p47phox and O(2)(-) production by NAD(P)H oxidase. This did not affect contractile properties of the vessel, but could still potentially alter cell signaling from oxidant increasing stresses.

Abstract
As the prevalence of osteoporosis is increasing, and the adverse effects of hormone replacement therapy are evident, women are searching for natural alternatives such as soy isoflavones to help prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. Daidzein is one of the most abundant isoflavones present in soy and it is unique as it can be further metabolized to equol, a compound with greater estrogenic activity than other isoflavones. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of purified daidzein in combination with high calcium (Ca) on preserving femur and lumbar vertebrae (LV1-LV4) bone mineral density (BMD) and biomechanical bone strength at three different sites (femur midpoint, femur neck and LV3) in ovariectomized mice. Sham (SH) mice (n = 12) received control diet (AIN93G) containing 2 g Ca/kg diet and ovariectomized mice were randomized to 1 of 6 groups (n = 12/group): OVX (2 g Ca/kg diet), HCa (25 g Ca/kg diet), HD (2 g Ca + 200 mg daidzein/kg diet), HDCa (25 g Ca + 200 mg daidzein/kg diet), LD (2 g Ca + 100 mg daidzein/kg diet) or LDCa (25 g Ca + 100 mg daidzein/kg diet) for 12 weeks. HDCa preserved femur and vertebrae BMD and biomechanical bone strength (at all three sites) compared to the OVX group, however, only femur yield load (at midpoint) was preserved to a level that was greater (P < 0.05) than HCa alone. Mice fed HD diet had greater (P < 0.05) femur BMD than OVX group, however, daidzein alone (HD) did not appear to preserve trabecular bone (i.e., vertebrae BMD and vertebra peak load). All mice fed daidzein produced equol and there were no uterotrophic effects of daidzein at either dose. Both daidzein and Ca attenuated the increase in serum IL-1beta observed in the OVX group. The results from this study suggest that the combination of daidzein and high Ca favorably affect cortical and trabecular bone as indicated by femur and lumbar vertebrae BMD and biomechanical strength but much of this effect is mediated by the high Ca diet. Further investigation is required to determine optimal dietary levels of daidzein and Ca with the long-term goal of developing a dietary strategy to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and related fragility fractures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Repeated electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation is known to stimulate the activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, and to enhance the circulation level of estrogen in the ovariectomized rats. To explore the source of the increased circulation estrogen, the extragonadal aromatization was detected. METHODS Female rats were divided into five groups: 1) intact (INT), 2) intact with EA in specific points (INT+EA), 3) ovariectomized (OVX), 4) ovariectomized with EA in specific points (OVX+EA) and 5) ovariectomized with EA in non-specific points (OVX+C). Radiometric assay, Western blot and RT-PCR were adopted to determine the extragonadal aromatization in subcutaneous abdominal (SA) adipose and liver tissues of rats. The blood concentrations of estrogen, testosterone and corticosterone were measured by radioimmunoassay. RESULTS The aromatase activities of the SA adipose and liver tissues in the OVX+EA rats increased significantly (p < 0.01) compared with those in the INT, INT+EA and OVX rats. The 58-kDa aromatase protein and aromatase mRNA expressions normalized to beta-actin in the OVX+EA rats' SA adipose tissues showed higher levels than those from corresponding tissues in the INT and INT+EA rats (p < 0.05). And the ratios of aromatase mRNA and protein to beta-actin in the OVX+EA rats' liver tissues increased significantly compared with those in the OVX rats (p < 0.05). Furthermore, blood estrogen and corticosterone concentrations showed significant increase in the OVX+EA rats compared with the concentrations in the OVX and OVX+C rats (p < 0.05), but no statistical disparity occurred on the blood testosterone concentrations between the OVX+EA rats and the OVX ones. CONCLUSION Both the subcutaneous abdominal adipose and the liver tissues contributed to the effects of electroacupuncture on the extragonadal aromatization to promote the blood concentrations of estrogen in the ovariectomized rats.

Abstract
Although hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and calcium (Ca) supplementation preserve bone mass more when combined, there is a growing concern over the safety of HRT that necessitates thorough investigation of effective, alternative treatments for bone loss. While plant-derived estrogen-like compounds such as isoflavones preserve bone, it is not known whether isoflavones and Ca supplementation attenuate losses in bone mass and strength to a greater extent when combined. This study compared the effects of an isoflavone extract + high Ca to isoflavone extract or high Ca alone on preservation of bone mineral density (BMD) and biomechanical strength in ovariectomized (ovx) rats. Rats were sham-operated (n = 10) or ovx (n = 40). Shams were fed a 0.2% Ca diet. Ovx rats were randomized to a 0.2% Ca diet alone (OVX) or with isoflavone extract (IE; 1.6 g/kg diet) or to a high Ca diet (Ca; 2.5%) alone or a high Ca diet with the isoflavone extract (IE + Ca) for 8 weeks. BMD of femur and lumbar spine were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The biomechanical strength of femurs and individual vertebra was measured by three-point bending and compression testing, respectively. The average food intake was lowest (P < 0.05) among sham and IE groups and greatest (P < 0.05) among the OVX group. Final body weight was lowest (P < 0.05) among shams and highest (P < 0.05) among the OVX group while IE + Ca were lighter (P < 0.05) than all ovx groups. Femur and vertebra BMD was greater (P < 0.05) among IE + Ca and sham rats compared to IE, Ca, or OVX rats. Although there were differences in femur BMD among groups, biomechanical properties at the femur midpoint did not differ among groups, possibly due to the lack of cortical bone loss at this site. Conversely, vertebra biomechanical strength was greater (P < 0.05) among IE + Ca and Ca alone groups compared to IE alone. Uterine weight was higher (P < 0.05) among shams than OVX and IE with no difference among shams, Ca, or IE + Ca rats, suggesting that the isoflavones did not have an uterotrophic effect. In conclusion, isoflavones combined with high Ca are more protective against the loss of femur and vertebra BMD than isoflavones or high Ca diet alone.

Abstract
We examined chronic effects of 17beta-estradiol (E(2)beta) on the responses of isolated rat anterior cerebral small arteries to vasoactive substances with special reference to endothelial function. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into four groups: (1) sham-operated group (Sham), (2) sham-operated plus E(2)beta treated group (Sham+E), (3) ovariectomized group (OVX), (4) ovariectomized plus E(2)beta treated group (OVX+E). 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) (10(-10)-10(-3) M) and U46619 (10(-15)-10(-8) M) induced concentration-dependent contractions in the cerebral small arteries. The 5-HT- and U46619-induced contractions were not affected by pretreatment with 3 x 10(-5) M N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). No significant difference in high potassium (80 mM)- and the agonists-mediated contractions was observed among the four groups. Administration of acetylcholine (ACh) (10(-9)-10(-3) M) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) (10(-8)-10(-3) M) caused dose-related relaxations in the cerebral small arteries precontracted by 10(-8) M U46619. Chronic treatment with E(2)beta caused a significant potentiation of the ACh-induced relaxations in the Sham+E and OVX+E groups. The dose-response curve for ACh in the OVX group was quite similar to that obtained with the Sham group. The ACh-induced relaxation was reduced significantly by pretreatment with 3 x 10(-5) M L-NAME, and an additional treatment with 10(-3) M L-arginine reversed significantly the L-NAME-induced inhibition. The removal of endothelial cells produced a significant reduction of the ACh-induced relaxation. Indomethacin (10(-5) M) did not alter the ACh-induced relaxation. The findings suggest that E(2)beta potentiates ACh-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation in rat anterior cerebral arteries and that the potentiation may be, in part, mediated by increasing production and release of endogenous NO from the endothelial cells.

Abstract
It is the prevailing view that the neurohypophysis derives from neural crest while the pituitary's anterior lobe is of ectodermal origin. However, it has been recently suggested that anterior pituitary cells could have in part neuro-ectodermal origin, and thus should express specific neuronal markers. This issue was examined previously with conflicting results. The present study attempts to clarify the question of whether or not neuronal markers are expressed in the adenohypophysis. Using quantitative immunofluorescence, we have positively identified a subset of anterior pituitary cells, which express immunoreactivity for neuronal markers, including 68 kDa neurofilament (NF68). Interestingly, we noticed that the expression of NF68 is sexually dimorphic (i.e. neurofilament-positive cells are more abundant in sexually mature female rats). In addition, NF68 expression in female rats increases during ontogenic development and reaches a plateau level after puberty. Thereafter, it displays plastic changes along the oestrous cycle, with the maximum of neurofilament expression at oestrus and the minimum at proestrus. NF68 immunoreactivity was examined after ovariectomy, oestradiol replacement and treatment with an specific oestrogen receptor antagonist. Bilateral ovariectomy induced a significant reduction in the number of NF68-positive cells. This effect was completely prevented by treatment of ovariectomized rats with oestradiol. When intact female rats were treated with the anti-oestrogen tamoxifen, a drastic decrease in NF68 expression in anterior pituitary cells was observed. Furthermore, oestradiol administration in castrated male rats increased NF68 immunoreactivity. Double-immunolabelling experiments provided evidence that pituitary cells expressing neuronal traits correspond to subsets of lactotrophs, somatotrophs, thyrotrophs and gonadotrophs. It remains to be established if NF68 induction in the pituitary is due to direct and/or indirect effects of oestrogens. Also, the possible functional role of this subset of NF68-positive anterior pituitary cells in the female rat remains to be examined.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the long-term efficacy of intraperitoneal (IP) and subcutaneous (SC) ovarian autotransplantation in rats. DESIGN Experimental animal study. SETTING Unit of Experimental Research, Barcelona University School of Medicine. ANIMAL(S) Female syngeneic Lewis rats aged 14 weeks. INTERVENTION(S) Group A, control group undergoing ovariectomy (n = 15); group B, undergoing ovariectomy and IP autologous heterotopic transplant (n = 15); and group C, ovariectomized with SC autologous heterotopic transplant (n = 15). In groups B and C, five animals were killed and their ovaries removed for morphometric analysis at 30 days after transplantation; five additional animals were killed at 180 days, and the remaining five animals were killed at 360 days. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Ovarian morphometric analysis and serial measurement of E(2) and FSH serum levels. RESULT(S); The mean number of antral follicles in the control group A was significantly higher than that observed in the ovarian grafts collected and examined 30 days after grafting in rats from groups B and C, but the mean granulosa cell area was significantly higher in both transplantation groups than in controls because of ovarian follicular hyperplasia. Histological examination of ovaries removed at 6 and 12 months after grafting in groups B and C showed increasing degrees of fibrosis, loss of primordial follicles, and the presence of epithelial cysts. In groups B and C, from day 30 after surgery onward, serum E(2) was significantly higher and FSH significantly lower, respectively, than in group A. E(2) and FSH patterns in groups B and C were similar throughout the study period. CONCLUSION(S) Heterotopic ovarian transplantation without vascular pedicle in rats is characterized by follicular hyperplasia endocrinologically functional, followed by progressive loss of follicles in heterotopic ovarian autografts.
