The influence of priming exercise on oxygen uptake, cardiac output, and muscle oxygenation kinetics during very heavy-intensity exercise in 9- to 13-yr-old boys

A Comparison of Warm-Up Effects on Maximal Aerobic Exercise Performance in Children

The aim of this study was to compare the warm-up effects of treadmill walking (TW) with a dynamic (DY) bodyweight warm-up on maximal aerobic exercise performance in children. Sixteen children (10.9 ± 1.5 vrs) were tested for peak oxygen uptake (VO₂ peak) on 2 nonconsecutive days following different 6 min warm-up protocols. TW consisted of walking on a motor-driven treadmill at 2.2 mph and 0% grade whereas the DY warm-up consisted of 9 body weight movements including dynamic stretches, lunges, and jumps. Maximal heart rate was significantly higher following DY than TW (193.9 ± 6.2 vs. 191.6 ± 6.1 bpm, respectively; p = 0.008). VO₂ peak (54.8 ± 9.6 vs. 51.8 ± 8.7 mL/kg/min; p = 0.09), maximal minute ventilation (68.9 ± 14.8 vs. 64.9 ± 9.4 L/min; p = 0.27), maximal respiratory exchange ratio (1.12 ± 0.1 vs. 1.11 ± 0.1; p = 0.85) and total exercise time (614.0 ± 77.1 vs. 605 ± 95.0 s; p = 0.55) did not differ significantly between DY and TM warm-ups, respectively. These findings indicate that the design of the warm-up protocol can influence the heart rate response to maximal aerobic exercise and has a tendency to influence VO₂ peak. A DY warm-up could be a viable alternative to a TW warm-up prior to maximal exercise testing in children.

Heart rate and gas exchange dynamic responses to multiple brief exercise bouts (MBEB) in early- and late-pubertal boys and girls

Natural patterns of physical activity in youth are characterized by brief periods of exercise of varying intensity interspersed with rest. To better understand systemic physiologic response mechanisms in children and adolescents, we examined five responses [heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), oxygen uptake (V̇O2 ), carbon dioxide production (V̇CO2 ), and minute ventilation (V̇E), measured breath-by-breath] to multiple brief exercise bouts (MBEB). Two groups of healthy participants (early pubertal: 17 female, 20 male; late-pubertal: 23 female, 21 male) performed five consecutive 2-min bouts of constant work rate cycle-ergometer exercise interspersed with 1-min of rest during separate sessions of low- or high-intensity (~40% or 80% peak work, respectively). For each 2-min on-transient and 1-min off-transient we calculated the average value of each cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) variable (Y̅). There were significant MBEB changes in 67 of 80 on- and off-transients. Y̅ increased bout-to-bout for all CPET variables, and the magnitude of increase was greater in the high-intensity exercise. We measured the metabolic cost of MBEB, scaled to work performed, for the entire 15 min and found significantly higher V̇O2 , V̇CO2 , and V̇E costs in the early-pubertal participants for both low- and high-intensity MBEB. To reduce breath-by-breath variability in estimation of CPET variable kinetics, we time-interpolated (second-by-second), superimposed, and averaged responses. Reasonable estimates of τ (<20% coefficient of variation) were found only for on-transients of HR and V̇O2 . There was a remarkable reduction in τHR following the first exercise bout in all groups. Natural patterns of physical activity shape cardiorespiratory responses in healthy children and adolescents. Protocols that measure the effect of a previous bout on the kinetics of subsequent bouts may aid in the clinical utility of CPET.

The Effect of Inspiratory Muscle Warm-Up on VO2 Kinetics during Submaximal Rowing

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of an inspiratory muscle warm-up on the VO₂ kinetics during submaximal intensity ergometer rowing. Ten competitive male rowers (age 23.1 ± 3.8 years; height 188.1 ± 6.3 cm; body mass 85.6 ± 6.6 kg) took part in this investigation. A submaximal constant intensity (90% P_VO2max) rowing test to volitional exhaustion was carried out twice with the standard rowing warm-up (Test 1) and with the standard rowing warm-up with additional specific inspiratory muscle warm-up of two sets of 30 repetitions at 40% maximal inspiratory pressure (Test 2). We found a significant correlation between time constant (τ₁) and the VO₂ value at 400 s in Test 1 (r = 0.78; p < 0.05); however, no correlation was found between those parameters in Test 2. In addition, we found a positive association between VO_2max from the incremental rowing test and τ₁ from Test 1 (r = 0.71; p < 0.05), whereas VO₂ did not correlate with τ₁ from Test 2. Adding inspiratory muscle warm-up of 40% maximal inspiratory pressure to regular rowing warm-up had no significant effect on oxygen consumption kinetics during submaximal rowing tests.

Is a verification phase useful for confirming maximal oxygen uptake in apparently healthy adults? A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

The 'verification phase' has emerged as a supplementary procedure to traditional maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) criteria to confirm that the highest possible VO2 has been attained during a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET).

OBJECTIVE

To compare the highest VO2 responses observed in different verification phase procedures with their preceding CPET for confirmation that VO2max was likely attained.

METHODS

MEDLINE (accessed through PubMed), Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and Cochrane (accessed through Wiley) were searched for relevant studies that involved apparently healthy adults, VO2max determination by indirect calorimetry, and a CPET on a cycle ergometer or treadmill that incorporated an appended verification phase. RevMan 5.3 software was used to analyze the pooled effect of the CPET and verification phase on the highest mean VO2. Meta-analysis effect size calculations incorporated random-effects assumptions due to the diversity of experimental protocols employed. I2 was calculated to determine the heterogeneity of VO2 responses, and a funnel plot was used to check the risk of bias, within the mean VO2 responses from the primary studies. Subgroup analyses were used to test the moderator effects of sex, cardiorespiratory fitness, exercise modality, CPET protocol, and verification phase protocol.

RESULTS

Eighty studies were included in the systematic review (total sample of 1,680 participants; 473 women; age 19-68 yr.; VO2max 3.3 ± 1.4 L/min or 46.9 ± 12.1 mL·kg-1·min-1). The highest mean VO2 values attained in the CPET and verification phase were similar in the 54 studies that were meta-analyzed (mean difference = 0.03 [95% CI = -0.01 to 0.06] L/min, P = 0.15). Furthermore, the difference between the CPET and verification phase was not affected by any of the potential moderators such as verification phase intensity (P = 0.11), type of recovery utilized (P = 0.36), VO2max verification criterion adoption (P = 0.29), same or alternate day verification procedure (P = 0.21), verification-phase duration (P = 0.35), or even according to sex, cardiorespiratory fitness level, exercise modality, and CPET protocol (P = 0.18 to P = 0.71). The funnel plot indicated that there was no significant publication bias.

CONCLUSIONS

The verification phase seems a robust procedure to confirm that the highest possible VO2 has been attained during a ramp or continuous step-incremented CPET. However, given the high concordance between the highest mean VO2 achieved in the CPET and verification phase, findings from the current study would question its necessity in all testing circumstances.

Relationship between (non)linear phase II pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics with skeletal muscle oxygenation and age in 11-15 year olds

NEW FINDINGS

What is the central question of this study? Do the phase II parameters of pulmonary oxygen uptake ( V ̇ O 2 ) kinetics display linear, first-order behaviour in association with alterations in skeletal muscle oxygenation during step cycling of different intensities or when exercise is initiated from an elevated work rate in youths. What is the main finding and its importance? Both linear and non-linear features of phase II V ̇ O 2 kinetics may be determined by alterations in the dynamic balance between microvascular O₂ delivery and utilization in 11-15 year olds. The recruitment of higher-order (i.e. type II) muscle fibres during 'work-to-work' cycling might be responsible for modulating V ̇ O 2 kinetics with chronological age.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated in 19 male youths (mean age: 13.6 ± 1.1 years, range: 11.7-15.7 years) the relationship between pulmonary oxygen uptake ( V ̇ O 2 ) and muscle deoxygenation kinetics during moderate- and very heavy-intensity 'step' cycling initiated from unloaded pedalling (i.e. U → M and U → VH) and moderate to very heavy-intensity step cycling (i.e. M → VH). Pulmonary V ̇ O 2 was measured breath-by-breath along with the tissue oxygenation index (TOI) of the vastus lateralis using near-infrared spectroscopy. There were no significant differences in the phase II time constant ( τ V ̇ O 2 p ) between U → M and U → VH (23 ± 6 vs. 25 ± 7 s; P = 0.36); however, the τ V ̇ O 2 p was slower during M → VH (42 ± 16 s) compared to other conditions (P < 0.001). Quadriceps TOI decreased with a faster (P < 0.01) mean response time (MRT; i.e. time delay + τ) during U → VH (14 ± 2 s) compared to U → M (22 ± 4 s) and M → VH (20 ± 6 s). The difference (Δ) between the τ V ̇ O 2 p and MRT-TOI was greater during U → VH compared to U → M (12 ± 7 vs. 2 ± 7 s, P < 0.001) and during M → VH (23 ± 15 s) compared to other conditions (P < 0.02), suggesting an increased proportional speeding of fractional O₂ extraction. The slowing of the τ V ̇ O 2 p during M → VH relative to U → M and U → VH correlated positively with chronological age (r = 0.68 and 0.57, respectively, P < 0.01). In youths, 'work-to-work' transitions slowed microvascular O₂ delivery-to-O₂ utilization with alterations in phase II V ̇ O 2 dynamics accentuated between the ages of 11 and 15 years.

Oxygen Uptake Kinetics in Youth: Characteristics, Interpretation, and Application

Pulmonary oxygen uptake ( V˙O2 ) kinetics, which describes the aerobic response to near instantaneous changes in metabolic demand, provides a valuable insight into the control and coordination of oxidative phosphorylation during exercise. Despite their applicability to the highly sporadic habitual physical activity and exercise patterns of children, relatively little is known regarding the influence of internal and external stimuli on the dynamic V˙O2 response. Although insufficient evidence is available during moderate-intensity exercise, an age-related slowing of the phase 2 time constant (τ) and augmentation of the V˙O2 slow component appears to manifest during heavy-intensity exercise, which may be related to changes in the muscle phosphate controllers of oxidative phosphorylation, muscle oxygen delivery and utilization, and/or muscle fiber type recruitment patterns. Similar to findings in adults, aerobic training is associated with a faster phase 2 τ and smaller V˙O2 slow component in youth, independent of age or maturity, indicative of an enhanced oxidative metabolism. However, a lack of longitudinal or intervention-based training studies limits our ability to attribute these changes to training per se. Further, methodologically rigorous studies are required to fully resolve the interaction(s) between age, sex, biological maturity, and external stimuli, such as exercise training and exercise intensity and the dynamic V˙O2 response at the onset and offset of exercise.

Performance Enhancing Effect of Metabolic Pre-conditioning on Upper-Body Strength-Endurance Exercise

High systemic blood lactate (La) was shown to inhibit glycolysis and to increase oxidative metabolism in subsequent anaerobic exercise. Aim of this study was to examine the effect of a metabolic pre-conditioning (MPC) on net La increase and performance in subsequent pull-up exercise (PU). Nine trained students (age: 25.1 ± 1.9 years; BMI: 21.7 ± 1.4) performed PU on a horizontal bar with legs placed on a box (angular hanging) either without or with MPC in a randomized order. MPC was a 26.6 ± 2 s all out shuttle run. Each trial started with a 15-min warm-up phase. Time between MPC and PU was 8 min. Heart rate (HR) and gas exchange measures (VO₂, VCO₂, and VE) were monitored, La and glucose were measured at specific time points. Gas exchange measures were compared by area under the curve (AUC). In PU without MPC, La increased from 1.24 ± 0.4 to 6.4 ± 1.4 mmol⋅l^-1, whereas with MPC, PU started at 9.28 ± 1.98 mmol⋅l^-1 La which increased to 10.89 ± 2.13 mmol⋅l^-1. With MPC, net La accumulation was significantly reduced by 75.5% but performance was significantly increased by 1 rep (4%). Likewise, net oxygen uptake VO₂ (50% AUC), pulmonary ventilation (VE) (34% AUC), and carbon dioxide VCO₂ production (26% AUC) were significantly increased during PU but respiratory exchange ratio (RER) was significantly blunted during work and recovery. MPC inhibited glycolysis and increased oxidative metabolism and performance in subsequent anaerobic upper-body strength-endurance exercise.

Top 10 Research Questions Related to Youth Aerobic Fitness

Peak oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]₂) is internationally recognized as the criterion measure of youth aerobic fitness, but despite pediatric data being available for almost 80 years, its measurement and interpretation in relation to growth, maturation, and health remain controversial. The trainability of youth aerobic fitness continues to be hotly debated, and causal mechanisms of training-induced changes and their modulation by chronological age, biological maturation, and sex are still to be resolved. The daily physical activity of youth is characterized by intermittent bouts and rapid changes in intensity, but physical activity of the intensity and duration required to determine peak [Formula: see text]₂ is rarely (if ever) experienced by most youth. In this context, it may therefore be the transient kinetics of pulmonary [Formula: see text]₂ that best reflect youth aerobic fitness. There are remarkably few rigorous studies of youth pulmonary [Formula: see text]₂ kinetics at the onset of exercise in different intensity domains, and the influence of chronological age, biological maturation, and sex during step changes in exercise intensity are not confidently documented. Understanding the trainability of the parameters of youth pulmonary [Formula: see text]₂ kinetics is primarily based on a few comparative studies of athletes and nonathletes. The underlying mechanisms of changes due to training require further exploration. The aims of the present article are therefore to provide a brief overview of aerobic fitness during growth and maturation, increase awareness of current controversies in its assessment and interpretation, identify gaps in knowledge, raise 10 relevant research questions, and indicate potential areas for future research.

Effects of roller massager on muscle recovery after exercise-induced muscle damage

Two experiments (n = 10) were conducted to determine the effects of roller massager (RM) on ankle plantar flexor muscle recovery after exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Experiment 1 examined both functional [i.e., ankle plantar flexion maximal isometric contraction and submaximal (30%) sustained force; ankle dorsiflexion maximal range of motion and resistance to stretch; and medial gastrocnemius pain pressure threshold] and morphological [cross-sectional area, thickness, fascicle length, and fascicle angle] variables, before and immediately, 1, 24, 48, and 72 h after an EIMD stimulus. Experiment 2 examined medial gastrocnemius deoxyhaemoglobin concentration kinetics before and 48 h after EIMD. Participants performed both experiments twice: with (RM) and without (no-roller massager; NRM) the application of a RM (6 × 45 s; 20-s rest between sets). RM intervention did not alter the functional impairment after EIMD, as well as the medial gastrocnemius morphology and oxygenation kinetics (P > 0.05). Although, an acute increase of ipsilateral (RM = + 19%, NRM = -5%, P = 0.032) and a strong tendency for contralateral (P = 0.095) medial gastrocnemius pain pressure threshold were observed. The present results suggest that a RM has no effect on plantar flexors performance, morphology, and oxygenation recovery after EIMD, except for muscle pain pressure threshold (i.e., a soreness).

Gender differences in V˙O2 and HR kinetics at the onset of moderate and heavy exercise intensity in adolescents

The majority of the studies on V˙O2 kinetics in pediatric populations investigated gender differences in prepubertal children during submaximal intensity exercise, but studies are lacking in adolescents. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that gender differences exist in the V˙O2 and heart rate (HR) kinetic responses to moderate (M) and heavy (H) intensity exercise in adolescents. Twenty-one healthy African-American adolescents (9 males, 15.8 ± 1.1 year; 12 females, 15.7 ± 1 year) performed constant work load exercise on a cycle ergometer at M and H. The V˙O2 kinetics of the male group was previously analyzed (Lai et al., Appl. Physiol. Nutr. Metab. 33:107-117, 2008b). For both genders, V˙O2 and HR kinetics were described with a single exponential at M and a double exponential at H. The fundamental time constant (τ₁) of V˙O2 was significantly higher in female than male at M (45 ± 7 vs. 36 ± 11 sec, P < 0.01) and H (41 ± 8 vs. 29 ± 9 sec, P < 0.01), respectively. The functional gain (G₁) was not statistically different between gender at M and statistically higher in females than males at H: 9.7 ± 1.2 versus 10.9 ± 1.3 mL min^-1 W^-1, respectively. The amplitude of the slow component was not significantly different between genders. The HR kinetics were significantly (τ₁, P < 0.01) slower in females than males at M (61 ± 16 sec vs. 45 ± 20 sec, P < 0.01) and H (42 ± 10 sec vs. 30 ± 8 sec, P = 0.03). The G₁ of HR was higher in females than males at M: 0.53 ± 0.11 versus 0.98 ± 0.2 bpm W^-1 and H: 0.40 ± 0.11 versus 0.73 ± 0.23 bpm W^-1, respectively. Gender differences in the V˙O2 and HR kinetics suggest that oxygen delivery and utilization kinetics of female adolescents differ from those in male adolescents.

The positive effects of priming exercise on oxygen uptake kinetics and high-intensity exercise performance are not magnified by a fast-start pacing strategy in trained cyclists

The purpose of this study was to determine both the independent and additive effects of prior heavy-intensity exercise and pacing strategies on the VO2 kinetics and performance during high-intensity exercise. Fourteen endurance cyclists (VO₂max  = 62.8±8.5 mL.kg⁻¹.min⁻¹) volunteered to participate in the present study with the following protocols: 1) incremental test to determine lactate threshold and VO₂max; 2) four maximal constant-load tests to estimate critical power; 3) six bouts of exercise, using a fast-start (FS), even-start (ES) or slow-start (SS) pacing strategy, with and without a preceding heavy-intensity exercise session (i.e., 90% critical power). In all conditions, the subjects completed an all-out sprint during the final 60 s of the test as a measure of the performance. For the control condition, the mean response time was significantly shorter (p<0.001) for FS (27±4 s) than for ES (32±5 s) and SS (32±6 s). After the prior exercise, the mean response time was not significantly different among the paced conditions (FS = 24±5 s; ES = 25±5 s; SS = 26±5 s). The end-sprint performance (i.e., mean power output) was only improved (∼3.2%, p<0.01) by prior exercise. Thus, in trained endurance cyclists, an FS pacing strategy does not magnify the positive effects of priming exercise on the overall VO2 kinetics and short-term high-intensity performance.

Influence of prior exercise on VO2 kinetics subsequent exhaustive rowing performance

Prior exercise has the potential to enhance subsequent performance by accelerating the oxygen uptake (VO₂) kinetics. The present study investigated the effects of two different intensities of prior exercise on pulmonary VO₂ kinetics and exercise time during subsequent exhaustive rowing exercise. It was hypothesized that in prior heavy, but not prior moderate exercise condition, overall VO₂ kinetics would be faster and the VO₂ primary amplitude would be higher, leading to longer exercise time at VO_2max. Six subjects (mean ± SD; age: 22.9±4.5 yr; height: 181.2±7.1 cm and body mass: 75.5±3.4 kg) completed square-wave transitions to 100% of VO_2max from three different conditions: without prior exercise, with prior moderate and heavy exercise. VO₂ was measured using a telemetric portable gas analyser (K4b², Cosmed, Rome, Italy) and the data were modelled using either mono or double exponential fittings. The use of prior moderate exercise resulted in a faster VO₂ pulmonary kinetics response (τ₁ = 13.41±3.96 s), an improved performance in the time to exhaustion (238.8±50.2 s) and similar blood lactate concentrations ([La⁻]) values (11.8±1.7 mmol.L⁻¹) compared to the condition without prior exercise (16.0±5.56 s, 215.3±60.1 s and 10.7±1.2 mmol.L⁻¹, for τ₁, time sustained at VO_2max and [La⁻], respectively). Performance of prior heavy exercise, although useful in accelerating the VO₂ pulmonary kinetics response during a subsequent time to exhaustion exercise (τ₁ = 9.18±1.60 s), resulted in a shorter time sustained at VO_2max (155.5±46.0 s), while [La⁻] was similar (13.5±1.7 mmol.L⁻¹) compared to the other two conditions. Although both prior moderate and heavy exercise resulted in a faster pulmonary VO₂ kinetics response, only prior moderate exercise lead to improved rowing performance.

The effect of priming exercise on O2 uptake kinetics, muscle O2 delivery and utilization, muscle activity, and exercise tolerance in boys

This study used priming exercise in young boys to investigate (i) how muscle oxygen delivery and oxygen utilization, and muscle activity modulate oxygen uptake kinetics during exercise; and (ii) whether the accelerated oxygen uptake kinetics following priming exercise can improve exercise tolerance. Seven boys that were aged 11.3 ± 1.6 years completed either a single bout (bout 1) or repeated bouts with 6 min of recovery (bout 2) of very heavy-intensity cycling exercise. During the tests oxygen uptake, muscle oxygenation, muscle electrical activity and exercise tolerance were measured. Priming exercise most likely shortened the oxygen uptake mean response time (change, ±90% confidence limits; -8.0 s, ±3.0), possibly increased the phase II oxygen uptake amplitude (0.11 L·min(-1), ±0.09) and very likely reduced the oxygen uptake slow component amplitude (-0.08 L·min(-1), ±0.07). Priming resulted in a likely reduction in integrated electromyography (-24% baseline, ±21% and -25% baseline, ±19) and a very likely reduction in Δ deoxyhaemoglobin/Δoxygen uptake (-0.16, ±0.11 and -0.09, ±0.05) over the phase II and slow component portions of the oxygen uptake response, respectively. A correlation was present between the change in tissue oxygenation index during bout 2 and the change in the phase II (r = -0.72, likely negative) and slow component (r = 0.72, likely positive) oxygen uptake amplitudes following priming exercise, but not for muscle activity. Exercise tolerance was likely reduced (change -177 s, ±180) following priming exercise. The altered phase II and slow component oxygen uptake amplitudes in boys following priming exercise are linked to an improved localised matching of muscle oxygen delivery to oxygen uptake and not muscle electrical activity. Despite more rapid oxygen uptake kinetics following priming exercise, exercise tolerance was not enhanced.

Influence of exercise intensity on pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics in young and late middle-aged adults

It is unclear whether pulmonary oxygen uptake (Vo2) kinetics demonstrate linear, first-order behavior during supra gas exchange threshold exercise. Resolution of this issue is pertinent to the elucidation of the factors regulating oxygen uptake (Vo2) kinetics, with oxygen availability and utilization proposed as putative mediators. To reexamine this issue with the advantage of a relatively large sample size, 50 young (24 ± 4 yr) and 15 late middle-aged (54 ± 3 yr) participants completed repeated bouts of moderate and heavy exercise. Pulmonary gas exchange, heart rate (HR), and cardiac output (Q) variables were measured throughout. The phase II τ was slower during heavy exercise in both young (moderate: 22 ± 9; heavy: 29 ± 9 s; P ≤ 0.001) and middle-aged (moderate: 22 ± 9; heavy: 30 ± 8 s; P ≤ 0.001) individuals. The HR τ was slower during heavy exercise in young (moderate: 33 ± 10; heavy: 44 ± 15 s; P ≤ 0.05) and middle-aged (moderate: 30 ± 12; heavy: 50 ± 20 s; P ≤ 0.05) participants, and the Q τ showed a similar trend (young moderate: 21 ± 13; heavy: 28 ± 16 s; middle-aged moderate: 32 ± 13; heavy: 40 ± 15 s; P ≥ 0.05). There were no differences in primary component Vo2 kinetics between age groups, but the middle-aged group had a significantly reduced Vo2 slow component amplitude in both absolute (young: 0.25 ± 0.09; middle-aged: 0.11 ± 0.06 l/min; P ≤ 0.05) and relative terms (young: 15 ± 10; middle-aged: 9 ± 4%; P ≤ 0.05). Thus Vo2 kinetics do not demonstrate dynamic linearity during heavy intensity exercise. Speculatively, the slower phase II τ during heavy exercise might be attributable to reduced oxygen availability. Finally, the primary and slow components of Vo2 kinetics appear to be differentially influenced by middle age.

Training effects on peripheral muscle oxygenation and performance in children with congenital heart diseases

We investigated the effect of training on peripheral muscular performance and oxygenation during exercise and recovery in children with congenital heart diseases (CHD). Eighteen patients with CHD aged 12 to 15 years were randomly assigned into either an individualized 12-week aerobic cycling training group (TG) or a control group (CG). Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and endurance at 50% MVC (time to exhaustion, Tlim) of the knee extensors were measured before and after training. During the 50% MVC exercise and recovery, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to assess the fall in muscle oxygenation, i.e., deoxygenation ([Formula: see text]) of the vastus lateralis, the mean rate of decrease in muscle oxygenation, the half time of recovery (T1/2R), and the recovery speed to maximal oxygenation (RS). There was no effect of time on any parameter in the CG. After training, significant improvements were observed in TG for MVC (101.6 ± 14.0 vs. 120.2 ± 19.4 N·m, p < 0.01) and Tlim (66.2 ± 22.6 vs. 86.0 ± 23.0 s, p< 0.01). Increased oxygenation (0.20 ± 0.13 vs. 0.15 ± 0.07 a.u., p < 0.01) and faster mean rate of decrease in muscle oxygenation were also shown after training in TG (1.22 ± 0.45 vs. 1.71 ± 0.78%·s–1, p < 0.001). Moreover, a shorter recovery time was observed in TG after training for T1/2R (27.2 ± 6.1 vs. 20.8 ± 4.2 s, p < 0.01) and RS (63.1 ± 18.4 vs. 50.3 ± 11.4 s, p < 0.01). A significant relationship between the change in [Formula: see text] and both MVC (r = 0.95, p < 0.001) and Tlim (r = 0.90, p < 0.001) in TG was observed. We concluded that exercise training improves peripheral muscular function by enhancing strength and endurance performance in children with CHD. This improvement was associated with increased oxygenation of peripheral muscles and faster recovery.

Faster pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics in children vs adults due to enhancements in oxygen delivery and extraction

This study aimed to examine if the faster pulmonary oxygen uptake (VO2p) phase 2 in children could be explained by increased O2 availability or extraction at the muscle level. For that purpose, O2 availability and extraction were assessed using deoxyhemoglobin (HHb) estimated by near-infrared spectroscopy during moderate-intensity constant load cycling exercise in children and young adults. Eleven prepubertal boys and 12 men volunteered to participate in the study. They performed one maximal graded exercise to determine the power associated with the gas exchange threshold (GET) and four constant load exercises at 90% of GET. VO2p and HHb were continuously monitored. VO2p , HHb, and estimated capillary blood flow (Qcap) kinetics were modelled after a time delay and characterized by the time to achieve 63% of the amplitude (τ) and by mean response time (MRT: time delay + τ), respectively. Mean values of τ for VO2p (P < 0.001), of MRT for HHb (P < 0.01) and of MRT for Qcap (P < 0.001) were significantly shorter in children. Faster VO2p kinetics have been shown in children; these appear due to both faster O2 extraction and delivery kinetics as indicated by faster HHb and Qcap kinetics, respectively.
