Abstract
The vagus nerve is the only pathway for transmitting parasympathetic signals between the brain and thoracoabdominal organs, thereby exhibiting anti-inflammatory functions through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Despite often being resected during lymph node dissection in upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery, the impact of vagotomy on postoperative outcomes in gastric cancer patients remains unclear. Sub-diaphragmatic vagotomy was performed on C57BL/6 mice. Three weeks later, syngeneic murine gastric cancer cell line YTN16P was injected into the peritoneal cavity, and the number of peritoneal metastases (PM) on the mesentery and omentum compared with control mice. The phenotypes of immune cells in peritoneal lavage and omental milky spots one day after tumor inoculation were analyzed using flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry. Intraperitoneal transfer of 3 × 105 YTN16P significantly increased the number of metastatic nodules on the mesentery in the vagotomy group compared to the control group. The omental metastasis grade was also significantly higher in the vagotomy group. Phenotypic analysis of immune cells in peritoneal lavage did not reveal significant differences after vagotomy. However, vagotomized mice exhibited a notable increase in milky spot area, with a higher presence of cytokeratin(+) tumor cells, F4/80(+) macrophages, and CD3(+) T cells. Vagus nerve signaling appears to regulate the immune response dynamics within milky spots against disseminated tumor cells and inhibits the development of PM. Preserving the vagus nerve may offer advantages in advanced gastric cancer surgery to reduce peritoneal recurrence.

Abstract
Although there is little direct evidence supporting that stress affects cancer incidence, it does influence the evolution, dissemination and therapeutic outcomes of neoplasia, as shown in human epidemiological analyses and mouse models. The experience of and response to physiological and psychological stressors can trigger neurological and endocrine alterations, which subsequently influence malignant (stem) cells, stromal cells and immune cells in the tumour microenvironment, as well as systemic factors in the tumour macroenvironment. Importantly, stress-induced neuroendocrine changes that can regulate immune responses have been gradually uncovered. Numerous stress-associated immunomodulatory molecules (SAIMs) can reshape natural or therapy-induced antitumour responses by engaging their corresponding receptors on immune cells. Moreover, stress can cause systemic or local metabolic reprogramming and change the composition of the gastrointestinal microbiota which can indirectly modulate antitumour immunity. Here, we explore the complex circuitries that link stress to perturbations in the cancer-immune dialogue and their implications for therapeutic approaches to cancer.

Abstract
With continued smoking of tobacco products and expanded use of nicotine delivery devices worldwide, understanding the impact of smoking and vaping on respiratory health remains a major global unmet need. Although multiple studies have shown a strong association between smoking and asthma, there is a relative paucity of mechanistic understanding of how elements in cigarette smoke impact the airway. Recognizing that nicotine is a major component in both smoking and vaping products, it is critical to understand the mechanisms by which nicotine impacts airways and promotes lung diseases such as asthma. There is now increasing evidence that α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChRs) are critical players in nicotine effects on airways, but the mechanisms by which α7nAChR influences different airway cell types have not been widely explored. In this review, we highlight and integrate the current state of knowledge regarding nicotine and α7nAChR in the context of asthma and identify potential approaches to alleviate the impact of smoking and vaping on the lungs.

Abstract
Cancer is globally a disease of significant public health concern owing to its prevalence, and association with morbidity and mortality. Thus, cost-effective treatments for cancer are important to help reduce its significant morbidity and mortality. However, the current therapeutic options for cancer such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery may produce serious adverse events such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and peripheral neuropathy, especially in the long term. In addition, these therapeutic options may not be well tolerated by the elderly especially those who are frail. The current article is aimed at discussing an alternative therapeutic option, non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and the roles it plays in cancer pathology and immunotherapy. The VNS does this by reducing oxidative stress via silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1); inhibiting inflammation via both hypothalamic-pituitary-axis (HPA) and the release of corticosteroid from the adrenal gland, and cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP), and increasing vagal activity which helps in the regulation of cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and metabolism, and increase chance of survival. Furthermore, it helps with reducing complications due to cancer or its treatments such as postoperative ileus and severity of peripheral neuropathy induced by chemotherapy, and improves cancer-related fatigue, lymphopenia, and quality of life. These suggest that the importance of non-invasive VNS in cancer pathology and immunotherapy cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, considering the safety of non-invasive VNS and its cost-effectiveness, it is a therapeutic option worth trying for these patients, especially in combination with other therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Iran. The nervous system provides proximity to tumor cells by releasing neurotransmitters such as dopamine and presenting them to the corresponding receptor-bearing tumors. While nerve fibers infiltrate the tumor microenvironment, little is known about the expression levels of dopamine (DA), dopamine receptors (DRs), and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) in GC patients. METHODS DRs and COMT expression were analyzed in 45 peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and 20 paired tumor and adjacent tissue of GC patients by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. DA was measured in plasma specimens using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Protein-protein interaction analysis was carried out to identify GC-related hub genes. RESULTS Increased expression of DRD1-DRD3 was found in tumor specimens compared with adjacent non-cancerous specimens (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was found between DRD1 and DRD3 expression (P = 0.009); DRD2 and DRD3 expression (P = 0.04). Plasma levels of dopamine were significantly lower in patients (1298 pg/ml) than in controls (4651 pg/ml). DRD1-DRD4 and COMT were up-regulated in PBMCs of patients compared with controls (P < 0.0001). Bioinformatic analyses showed 30 hub genes associated with Protein kinase A and extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling pathways. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicated dysregulation of DRs and COMT mRNA expression in GC and suggest that the brain- gastrointestinal axis may mediate gastric cancer development. Network analysis revealed that combination treatments could be considered for optimizing and improving the precision treatment of GC.

Abstract
High vagal nerve activity, reliability measured by HRV, is considered protective in cancer, reducing oxidative stress, inflammation and opposing sympathetic nerve activity. The present monocentric study examines the relationship between HRV, TNM stage, co-morbidity, systemic inflammation and survival in patients who underwent potentially curative resections for colorectal cancer (CRC). Time-domain HRV measures, Standard Deviation of NN-intervals (SDNN) and Root Mean Square of Successive Differences (RMSSD), were examined as categorical (median) and continuous variables. Systemic inflammation was determined using systemic inflammatory grade (SIG) and co-morbidity using ASA. The primary end point was overall survival (OS) and was analysed using Cox regression. There were 439 patients included in the study and the median follow-up was 78 months. Forty-nine percent (n = 217) and 48% (n = 213) of patients were categorised as having low SDNN (< 24 ms) and RMSSD (< 29.8 ms), respectively. On univariate analysis, SDNN was not significantly associated with TNM stage (p = 0.830), ASA (p = 0.598) or SIG (p = 0.898). RMSSD was not significantly associated with TNM stage (p = 0.267), ASA (p = 0.294) or SIG (p = 0.951). Neither SDNN or RMSSD, categorical or continuous, were significantly associated with OS. In conclusion, neither SDNN or RMSSD were associated with TNM stage, ASA, SIG or survival in patients undergoing potentially curative surgery for CRC.

Abstract
This study evaluated the antihyperalgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of percutaneous vagus nerve electrical stimulation (pVNS) by comparing the effects of alternating and random frequencies in an animal model of persistent inflammatory hyperalgesia. The model was induced by Freund's complete adjuvant (CFA) intraplantar (i.pl.) injection. Mice were treated with different protocols of time (10, 20, or 30 min), ear laterality (right, left or both), and frequency (alternating or random). Mechanical hyperalgesia was evaluated, and some groups received i.pl. WRW4 (FPR2/ALX antagonist) to determine the involvement. Edema, paw surface temperature, and spontaneous locomotor activity were evaluated. Interleukin-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and IL4 levels were verified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. AnxA1, FPR2/ALX, neutrophil, M1 and M2 phenotype macrophage, and apoptotic cells markers were identified using western blotting. The antihyperalgesic effect pVNS with alternating and random frequency effect is depending on the type of frequency, time, and ear treated. The pVNS random frequency in the left ear for 10 min had a longer lasting antihyperalgesic effect, superior to classical stimulation using alternating frequency and the FPR2/ALX receptor was involved in this effect. There was a reduction in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and an increase in the immunocontent of AnxA1 and CD86 in mice paw. pVNS with a random frequency in the left ear for 10 min showed to be optimal for inducing an antihyperalgesic effect. Thus, the random frequency was more effective than the alternating frequency. Therefore, pVNS may be an important adjunctive treatment for persistent inflammatory pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is defined as a "distressing, persistent, subjective sense of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive tiredness or exhaustion related to cancer or cancer treatment that is not proportional to recent activity and interferes with usual functioning." CRF is frequently observed in cancer patients even before the initiation of tumor therapy. Its cause is not clear, but in addition to primary effects of therapy, a tumor-induced elevated level of inflammatory cytokines may play a role. Transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a noninvasive way to activate central nervous pathways and modulate pain perception and the immune system. It has positive effects on autoimmune conditions and can also improve fatigue associated with Sjogren's syndrome. It is the main purpose of this feasibility study to investigate the feasibility of daily taVNS against CRF. Therefore, the stimulation protocol of the newly introduced smartphone app of the manufacturer is evaluated. Additionally, the effect taVNS on CRF and quality of life (QoL) shall be evaluated. METHODS Thirty adult patients with gastrointestinal tumors during or after treatment, relevant CRF (Hornheide questionnaire) and life expectancy > 1 year, are enrolled. Patients are randomized to treatment or sham arm and be informed that they will either feel the stimulation or not. Treatment group will receive left-sided tragus above-threshold stimulation with 25 Hz, 250 µs pulse width, and 28-s/32-s on/off paradigm for 4 h throughout the day for 4 weeks. Sham group will receive no stimulation via a nonfunctional electrode. A daily stimulation protocol with time and average intensity is automatically created by a smartphone app connected to the stimulator via Bluetooth®. Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20, Short-Form 36 and Beck Depression Inventory questionnaires will be filled out before and after 4 weeks of stimulation. DISCUSSION Primarily, the patients' daily stimulation time and intensity will be evaluated through the electronic protocol after 4 weeks. Secondarily, the effect of taVNS on cancer-related fatigue and QoL will be measured through the questionnaires. As taVNS seems to modulate inflammatory cytokines, this noninvasive method may - if accepted by the patients - be a promising adjunct in the treatment of cancer-related fatigue. TRIAL REGISTRATION The study was approved by local ethics committee (21-7395) and registered at the DRKS database (DRKS00027481).

Abstract
The vagus nerve (VN) is the main parasympathetic nerve of the autonomic nervous system. It is widely distributed in the gastrointestinal tract and maintains gastrointestinal homeostasis with the sympathetic nerve under physiological conditions. The VN communicates with various components of the tumor microenvironment to positively and dynamically affect the progression of gastrointestinal tumors (GITs). The intervention in vagus innervation delays GIT progression. Developments in adeno-associated virus vectors, nanotechnology, and in vivo neurobiological techniques have enabled the creation of precisely regulated "tumor neurotherapies". Furthermore, the combination of neurobiological techniques and single cell sequencing may reveal more insights into VN and GIT. The present review aimed to summarize the mechanisms of communication between the VN and the gastrointestinal TME and to explore the potential and challenges of VN-based tumor neurotherapy in GITs.

Abstract
Recent studies have revealed that neural functions are involved in possibly every aspect of a cancer development, serving as bridges connecting microenvironmental stressors, activities of intracellular subsystems, and cell survival. Elucidation of the functional roles played by the neural system could provide the missing links in developing a systems-level understanding of cancer biology. However, the existing information is highly fragmented and scattered across the literature and internet databases, making it difficult for cancer researchers to use. We have conducted computational analyses of transcriptomic data of cancer tissues in TCGA and tissues of healthy organs in GTEx, aiming to demonstrate how the functional roles by the neural genes could be derived and what non-neural functions they are associated with, across different stages of 26 cancer types. Several novel discoveries are made, including i) the expressions of certain neural genes can predict the prognosis of a cancer patient; ii) cancer metastasis tends to involve specific neural functions; iii) cancers of low survival rates involve more neural interactions than those with high survival rates; iv) more malignant cancers involve more complex neural functions; and v) neural functions are probably induced to alleviate stresses and help the associated cancer cells to survive. A database, called NGC, is developed for organizing such derived neural functions and associations, along with gene expressions and functional annotations collected from public databases, aiming to provide an integrated and publicly available information resource to enable cancer researchers to take full advantage of the relevant information in their research, facilitated by tools provided by NGC.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have shown that the predictive value of traditional linear (time domain and frequency domain) heart rate variability (HRV) for the survival of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is controversial. Nonlinear methods, based on the concept of complexity, have been used to evaluate HRV, providing a new means to reveal the physiological and pathological changes in HRV. This study aimed to assess the association between heartbeat complexity and overall survival in patients with advanced NSCLC. Methods This study included 78 patients with advanced NSCLC (mean age: 62.0 ± 9.3 years). A 5-min resting electrocardiogram of advanced NSCLC patients was collected to analyze the following HRV parameters: time domain indicators, i.e., standard deviation of the normal-normal intervals (SDNN) and root mean square of successive interval differences (RMSSD); frequency domain indicators, i.e., total power (TP), low frequency power (LF), high frequency power (HF), and the ratio of LF to HF (LF/HF); nonlinear HRV indicators characterizing heartbeat complexity, i.e., approximate entropy (ApEn), sample entropy (SampEn), and recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) indexes: mean diagonal line length (Lmean), maximal diagonal line length (Lmax), recurrence rate (REC), determinism (DET), and shannon entropy (ShanEn). Results Univariate analysis revealed that the linear frequency domain parameter HF and nonlinear RQA parameters Lmax, REC, and DET were significantly correlated with the survival of advanced NSCLC patients (all p < 0.05). After adjusting for confounders in the multivariate analysis, HF, REC, and DET were found to be independent prognostic factors for the survival of patients with advanced NSCLC (all p < 0.05). Conclusion There was an independent association between heartbeat complexity and survival in advanced NSCLC patients. The nonlinear analysis method based on RQA may provide valuable additional information for the prognostic stratification of patients with advanced NSCLC and may supplement the traditional time domain and frequency domain analysis methods.

Is depression the missing link between inflammatory mediators and cancer? Pharmacol Ther 2022; 240:108293. Abstract
Patients with cancer are at greater risk of developing depression in comparison to the general population and this is associated with serious adverse effects, such as poorer quality of life, worse prognosis and higher mortality. Although the relationship between depression and cancer is now well established, a common underlying pathophysiological mechanism between the two conditions is yet to be elucidated. Existing theories of depression, based on monoamine neurotransmitter system dysfunction, are insufficient as explanations of the disorder. Recent advances have implicated neuroinflammatory mechanisms in the etiology of depression and it has been demonstrated that inflammation at a peripheral level may be mirrored centrally in astrocytes and microglia serving to promote chronic levels of inflammation in the brain. Three major routes to depression in cancer in which proinflammatory mediators are implicated, seem likely. Activation of the kynurenine pathway involving cytokines, increases tryptophan catabolism, resulting in diminished levels of serotonin which is widely acknowledged as being the hallmark of depression. It also results in neurotoxic effects on brain regions thought to be involved in the evolution of major depression. Proinflammatory mediators also play a crucial role in impairing regulatory glucocorticoid mediated feedback of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which is activated by stress and considered to be involved in both depression and cancer. The third route is via the glutamatergic pathway, whereby glutamate excitotoxicity may lead to depression associated with cancer. A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying these dysregulated and other newly emerging pathways may provide a rationale for therapeutic targeting, serving to improve the care of cancer patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Identifying new modifiable prognostic markers is important for ovarian cancer (OC). Low parasympathic activity is associated with inflammation, oxidative stress and sympathetic nervous system activation. Previous studies reported that low vagal nerve activity, measured by low heart rate variability (HRV), may predict poor cancer prognosis. We aimed to examine the prognostic value of HRV in OC. METHODS This bicentric retrospective study included patients diagnosed with serous OC FIGO stage ≥IIB, between January 2015 and August 2019, with electrocardiograms (ECG) available around diagnosis. HRV was measured from ECG using the time domain parameter of standard deviation of all normal-to-normal heartbeat intervals (SDNN). Optimal SDNN cut-off was determined using the Youden index criteria of time-dependent ROC curves. We used multivariate cox proportional hazard models to investigate the association between HRV and overall survival (OS), while adjusting for well-known OC prognostic factors. RESULTS The 202 patients included were 65.7 years-old on average, 93% had stage FIGO IIIC/IV, 56% had complete surgical resection. Median OS was 38.6 months [95%CI:34.4-47.4]. The median SDNN was 11.1ms, with an optimal cut-off of 10ms to predict OS. OS was shorter for patients with low HRV compared to high HRV (26.4 vs 45.1 months; p<0.001). In multivariate analysis, HRV remained an independent prognostic factor with a two-fold higher risk of death among patients with low SDNN compared to those with high SDNN (HR=2.03, 95%CI=1.35-3.06, p<0.001). CONCLUSION Low HRV, was associated with worse OS in OC patients, supporting previous studies on the prognostic role of HRV in cancer. If replicated in prospective studies, vagal nerve activity may be a new therapeutic target in OC.

Abstract
Background Chemoradiotherapy (CRT), which might affect the autonomic system, is the mainstay therapy for advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Autonomic dysfunction has been found to possibly lead to cancer mortality in those with elevated resting heart rates (RHR). Skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) is a new method of stimulating electrical signals in skin to evaluate autonomic function from sympathetic tone. In this study, we investigated the association between changes in RHR and autonomic function and ESCC mortality. Methods Thirty-nine stage II-IV ESCC patients receiving CRT between March 2019 and November 2020 were prospectively enrolled and carefully selected, followed up and received the same meticulous supportive care. Serial RHR was recorded every two weeks from before CRT to eight weeks after CRT and average SKNA were recorded before and four weeks after CRT. All-cause mortality was defined as primary outcome. Results We found the RHR of ESCC patients to be significantly elevated and peaking at four weeks after CRT (p < 0.001) and then to gradually decrease. Those with an elevated RHR above the cutoff level (18 beat-per-minute) at eight weeks after CRT had worse overall survival. In addition, those with higher baseline sympathetic tone (average SKNA ≥ 0.86 μV) also had poor outcome. Conclusions Increased pre-treatment sympathetic tone and elevated RHR after CRT are alarm signs of poor ESCC outcome. Further exploration of the mechanisms underlying these associations could potentially lead to intervention strategies for reducing mortality. Abstract
Breast cancer is the most frequent malignant disease among women, being responsible for a considerable percentage of fatalities and comorbidities every year. Despite advances in early detection and therapy, evidence shows that breast cancer survivors are at increased risk of developing other chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases.
Autonomic dysfunction is an emerging, but poorly understood topic that has been suggested as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in breast cancer patients. It clinically manifests through persistently elevated heart rates and abnormal heart rate variability, even before any signs of cardiovascular dysfunction appear. Since changes in the left ventricular ejection fraction only manifest when myocardial injury has already occurred, it has been hypothesized that autonomic dysfunction can constitute an early biomarker of cardiovascular impairment in breast cancer patients.
This review focuses on the direct and indirect effects of cancer and its treatment on the autonomic nervous system in breast cancer patients. We highlight the mechanisms potentially involved in cancer and antineoplastic therapy-related autonomic imbalance and review the potential strategies to prevent and/or attenuate autonomic dysfunction.
There are gaps in the current knowledge; more research in this area is needed to identify the relevance of autonomic dysfunction and define beneficial interventions to prevent cardiovascular disease in breast cancer patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Frailty can affect cancer treatment decisions and outcomes. Depression, fatigue, and cognitive impairment often experienced by patients with cancer are expected to be associated with frailty. We aimed to identify frailty and its related factors in older adults with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study in a Korean urban tertiary hospital. A structured self-report questionnaire was used including frailty and its related variables and measured heart rate variability (HRV). Multinomial logistic regression was performed to identify the factors related to frailty. RESULTS Data from 124 out of 136 patients with stomach, colorectal, and lung cancers were analyzed. Approximately 90% of the participants were in the pre-frail and frail groups. There were significant differences among the three groups in terms of depression (p = 0.006) and HRV (p = 0.041). The factor associated with higher frailty levels was depression across groups (pre-frail odds ratio (OR): 1.31, 95% CI: 1.14-1.51; frail OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.11-1.49). However, only deficits observed or commented on by others were retained as factors significantly associated with higher frailty in the pre-frail group (OR: 2.40, 95% CI: 1.40-4.13). In contrast, increased HRV (OR: 0.35, 95% CI: 0.13-0.95) was associated with lower frailty levels in the frail group. CONCLUSION It is important to classify older adult patients with cancer into pre-frail and frail groups so that interventions can be provided on time. Understanding the characteristics associated with frailty in older adult patients with cancer can positively affect their health-related quality of life and treatment outcomes.

Abstract
Background Evidence suggests that the risk of recurrence and death in patients with early cervical cancer (ECC) undergoing minimally invasive surgery is significantly higher than that in patients undergoing open surgery. However, the mechanisms underlying such a difference remain unclear. Heart rate variability (HRV) represents autonomic nerve activity, which is related to tumorgenesis and can be used as a prognostic indicator for various cancers. The main purpose of this study was to explore the difference in the effects of laparoscopic and open surgery on HRV in ECC patients. Methods A total of 68 ECC (FIGO IA1 with lymphovascular space invasion -IIA2) patients undergoing radical hysterectomy for the first time (84% open group vs. 16% laparoscopic group) were included. A single-lead micro-ECG recorder was used to collect 5 min electrocardiograms 1 day before the operation and 3 days after the operation, and then HRV time domain and frequency domain indices were analyzed, including mean heart rate (MeanHR), maximum heart rate (MaxHR), minimum heart rate (MinHR), the standard deviation of all normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN), the root mean square of successive interval differences (RMSSD), very low-frequency power (VLF), low-frequency power (LF), high-frequency power (HF), total power (TP), and the ratio of LF to HF (LF/HF). Results Heart rate (i.e., MeanHR, MaxHR, and MinHR) were significantly higher, and HRV (i.e., SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF, and TP) were significantly lower after the operation than before the operation in both the laparoscopic and open groups (P < 0.05). The postoperative reduction in RMSSD and HF was significantly higher in the laparoscopic group than in the open group (P < 0.05). Conclusions These data suggest that radical hysterectomy can lead to increased heart rate and decreased HRV in patients with ECC, which can negatively affect cardiac autonomic regulation. Compared with open surgery, laparoscopic surgery has a greater negative impact on the HRV of ECC patients.

Matériel et méthode : Étude pilote monocentrique, ouverte, contrôlée, randomisée non comparative, incluant 20 patients en soins courants vs 40 patients formés à la cohérence cardiaque avec biofeedback et guide respiratoire pour une pratique au domicile enregistrée.
Résultats attendus : Adhésion satisfaisante au programme, pouvant caractériser les éléments favorisant son implémentation avant et après chirurgie et évaluation de son impact sur l’anxiété.
Perspectives : Efficacité à déterminer pour transférer ce soin de support.

Abstract
Blood inflammatory biomarkers, including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), play a significant role in determining the prognosis of patients with cervical cancer (CC). Currently, no methods are available to predict these indexes pre-operatively. Cardiac autonomic function is determined based on the heart rate variability (HRV), which is also associated with a progressive inflammatory response and cancer. Thus, the main aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using pre-operative HRV parameters in CC patients to predict post-operative blood inflammation biomarkers as a means of determining prognosis. Between 2020 and 2021, 56 patients who were diagnosed with CC and then underwent hysterectomy surgery at the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, First Affiliated Hospital, Bengbu Medical College were enrolled in this study. Five-minute electrocardiogram data were collected 1 day before the operation for analysis of HRV parameters, including frequency domain parameters (LF, HF, and LF/HF) and Poincaré plot parameters (SD1, SD2, and SD2/SD1). Venous blood was collected 2 days post-operatively and inflammatory biomarkers were evaluated, with the NLR, LMR, and PLR determined. Pre-operative SD2 was significantly associated with post-operative PLR, with each 1-unit increase in SD2 decreasing the PLR value by 2.4 ± 0.9 (P < 0.05). Besides, LF/HF was significantly correlated with NLR, with each 1-unit increase in LF/HF increasing the NLR value by 1.1 ± 0.5 (P < 0.05). This association was independent of patient age and body mass index. These results suggest that the pre-operative autonomic nervous system plays a role in the regulation of post-operative cancer inflammation and that pre-operative HRV parameters can potentially predict post-operative inflammation and facilitate clinical treatment decisions.

Abstract
Most cancer patients exhibit autonomic dysfunction with attenuated heart rate variability (HRV) levels compared to healthy controls. This research aimed to create and evaluate a machine learning (ML) model enabling discrimination between cancer patients and healthy controls based on 5-min-ECG recordings. We selected 12 HRV features based on previous research and compared the results between cancer patients and healthy individuals using Wilcoxon sum-rank test. Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) identified the top five features, averaged over 5 min and employed them as input to three different ML. Next, we created an ensemble model based on a stacking method that aggregated the predictions from all three base classifiers. All HRV features were significantly different between the two groups. SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50%, HRV triangular index, and SD1 were selected by RFE and used as an input to three different ML. All three base-classifiers performed above chance level, RF being the most efficient with a testing accuracy of 83%. The ensemble model showed a classification accuracy of 86% and an AUC of 0.95. The results obtained by ML algorithms suggest HRV parameters could be a reliable input for differentiating between cancer patients and healthy controls. Results should be interpreted in light of some limitations that call for replication studies with larger sample sizes.

Abstract
Outcomes and prognostic factors among patients with brain metastases (BM) have been widely studied, but seldom for the non-elderly. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a physiological phenomenon and has been shown as a survival prognostic factor in cancer patients. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes and prognosis among non-elderly BM patients with the incorporation of HRV analysis. Forty non-elderly BM patients treated using whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) were studied from January 2010 prospectively with 5-min electrocardiography (ECG) recordings. Individualized HRV was generated by the ECG, and the time domain HRV index SDNN was chosen for survival analysis. The median overall survival (OS) for the entire group was 6.21 months. Univariate analysis revealed that a KPS < 80 (p = 0.019) and an SDNN < 10 ms (p = 0.007) demonstrated statistical significance for OS; multivariate analysis confirmed that a KPS < 80 (p = 0.004; HR = 3.060, CI = 1.437–6.517) and an SDNN < 10 ms (p = 0.010; HR = 2.664, CI = 1.262–5.624) were independent prognostic factors. Prospective studies for risk stratification among non-elderly BM patients based on our results are warranted to validate our findings.

Abstract
The influence of the naturally occurring population of microbes on various human diseases has been a topic of much recent interest. Not surprisingly, continuously growing attention is devoted to the existence of a gut brain axis, where the microbiota present in the gut can affect the nervous system through the release of metabolites, stimulation of the immune system, changing the permeability of the blood–brain barrier or activating the vagus nerves. Many of the methods that stimulate the nervous system can also lead to the development of cancer by manipulating pathways associated with the hallmarks of cancer. Moreover, neurogenesis or the creation of new nervous tissue, is associated with the development and progression of cancer in a similar manner as the blood and lymphatic systems. Finally, microbes can secrete neurotransmitters, which can stimulate cancer growth and development. In this review we discuss the latest evidence that support the importance of microbiota and peripheral nerves in cancer development and dissemination.

Abstract
Cardiac autonomic modulation, assessed by heart rate variability (HRV), is associated with tumor pathogenesis and development as well as invasion and metastasis. This study aimed to examine this association in breast cancer (BC) patients. A total of 133 patients (average age 49.2years) with BC or benign breast tumors were divided into three groups: benign group, early-stage group, and advanced-stage group. About 5-min resting ECG was collected for the analysis of linear and nonlinear HRV parameters. Multiple logistic regression models were performed to test the independent contribution of HRV to breast tumor stage. The advanced-stage group had significantly reduced HRV compared to the benign and early-stage groups. In particular, for each 1-SD increase in SD2, SD of normal-to-normal intervals, very-low frequency, total power, and low frequency, the odds of having advanced staging decreased by 69.3, 64.3, 58.3, 53.3, and 65.9%, respectively. These associations were independent of age, body mass index, mean heart rate (HR), and respiratory rate (RR). These findings suggest an association between HRV and breast tumor stage, and HRV parameters may help construct an effective early diagnostic and clinical prognostic model.

Abstract
In response to adverse social-environmental conditions, leukocytes gene expression profile is altered in a pattern recognized as the conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA). This entails the up-regulated expression of pro-inflammatory genes and down-regulated expression of genes involved in type-I interferon (IFN) related anti-viral immunity. In contrast, vagal nerve activity is recognized as a significant anti-inflammatory modulator. In this work, we investigated the association between CTRA and vagal activity indicated by the standard deviation of all NN interval (SDNN), a measure of heart-rate variability, in breast cancer patients awaiting surgery (n = 16). This association was tested both at the molecular leukocyte transcription factor activity level, as well as at the cytokines serum levels. We found an association between higher SDNN and increased interferon (IFN) related anti-viral pathways, both on the leukocyte transcription factor level and serum protein level. Unexpectedly, we also found a positive correlation between higher SDNN and pro-inflammatory transcription factor activity and cytokine serum level, potentially suggesting that increased vagal activity was induced by increased inflammation, in the context of pre-surgical stress and the presence of malignant tissue. Transcription origin analysis (TOA) suggests a role for monocyte and B-cells in the anti-inflammatory and anti-metastatic effects induced by vagal nerve signaling. Larger prospective studies are needed to verify and elaborate on the results from this small cross-sectional study. Increased HRV is associated with increased anti-viral immunity. Unexpectedly, HRV is also associated with increased pro-inflammatory signaling. Findings are evident separately at transcription factor activity level as well as at cytokine serum levels. Macrophages and B cells emerge as the origin of these differences. Findings may shed light on novel pathways in which vagal nerve activity modulate cancer progression.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to explore the potential effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at ST36 on mice bearing breast tumors by regulating inflammatory cytokines to enhance antitumor immunity via vagus nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS Female BALB/c mice were implanted with 4T1-luc2 breast tumor cells to establish a murine mammary cancer model. Tumor growth was evaluated by tumor volume, weight and bioluminescence imaging. Inflammatory conditions in serum and tumor tissue were assessed by cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-10) and HE staining. Proportions and functions of CD8+ T cells, NK cells and MDSCs were identified by flow cytometry and western blot. Involvement of vagal efferent components was confirmed by ChAT and c-Fos double labeling immunohistochemistry in dorsal motor nucleus of vagus (DMV). Subdiaphragmatic vagotomy was employed to determine if the effect of EA was mediated by vagus nerve. KEY FINDINGS EA at ST36 reduced the volume and weight of tumors within 22 days after implantation. Proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α in serum, tumor and local inflammatory infiltration were obviously attenuated after EA. Meanwhile, EA intervention significantly augmented the proportion and cytolytic function of CD8+ T cells and NK cells, along with a decline in the accumulation and immunosuppressive activities of MDSCs. Finally, c-Fos expression in ChAT+ neurons in DMV increased following EA, and the ameliorating effect of EA was obviously blocked by subdiaphragmatic vagotomy. SIGNIFICANCE EA intervention relieved tumor progression in breast tumor-bearing mice by alleviating inflammation and enhancing antitumor immunity, which was mediated by eliciting efferent vagus nerve activity.

Abstract
It is well known that tumours arising in different organs are innervated and that 'perineural invasion' (cancer cells escaping from the tumour by following the nerve trunk) is a negative prognostic factor. More surprisingly, increasing evidence suggests that the nerves can provide active inputs to tumours and there is two-way communication between nerves and cancer cells within the tumour microenvironment. Cells of the immune system also interact with the nerves and cancer cells. Thus, the nerve connections can exert significant control over cancer progression and modulating these (physically or chemically) can affect significantly the cancer process. Nerve inputs to tumours are derived mainly from the sympathetic (adrenergic) and the parasympathetic (cholinergic) systems, which are interactive. An important component of the latter is the vagus nerve, the largest of the cranial nerves. Here, we present a two-part review of the nerve inputs to tumours and their effects on tumorigenesis. First, we review briefly some relevant general issues including ultrastructural aspects, stemness, interactions between neurones and primary tumours, and communication between neurones and metastasizing tumour cells. Ultrastructural characteristics include synaptic vesicles, tumour microtubes and gap junctions enabling formation of cellular networks. Second, we evaluate the pathophysiology of the nerve input to five major carcinomas: cancers of prostate, stomach, colon, lung and pancreas. For each cancer, we present (i) the nerve inputs normally present in the cancer organ and (ii) how these interact and influence the cancer process. The best clinical evidence for the role of nerves in promoting tumorigenesis comes from prostate cancer patients where metastatic progression has been shown to be suppressed significantly in cases of spinal cord injury. The balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic contributions to early versus late tumorigenesis varies amongst the different cancers. Different branches of the vagus provide functional inputs to several of the carcinomas and, in two-way interaction with the sympathetic nervous system, affect different stages of the cancer process. Overall, the impact of the vagus nerve can be 'direct' or 'indirect'. Directly, the effect of the vagus is primarily to promote tumorigenesis and this is mediated through cholinergic receptor mechanisms. Indirectly, pro- and anti-tumour effects can occur by stimulation or inhibition of the sympathetic nervous system, respectively. Less well understood are the 'indirect' anti-tumour effect of the vagus nerve via immunomodulation/inflammation, and the role of sensory innervation. A frequent occurrence in the nerve-tumour interactions is the presence of positive feedback driven by agents like nerve growth factor. We conclude that the nerve inputs to tumours can actively and dynamically impact upon cancer progression and are open to clinical exploitation.

Abstract
Background Heart Rate Variability (HRV) represents efferent vagus nerve activity which is suggested to be inversely related to fundamental mechanisms of tumorigenesis and to be a predictor of prognosis in various types of cancer. HRV is also believed to predict the occurrence and severity of post-operative complications. We aimed to determine the role of pre-operative HRV as a prognostic factor in overall and cancer free survival in patients with colorectal cancer. Methods Retrospective analysis was performed in a detailed dataset of patients diagnosed with primary colorectal cancer between January 2010 and December 2016, who underwent curative surgical treatment. HRV was measured as time-domain parameters (SDNN (Standard Deviation of NN-intervals) and RMSSD (Root Mean Square of Successive Differences)) based on pre-operative 10 second ECGs. Groups were created by baseline HRV: Low HRV (SDNN <20ms or RMSSD <19ms) and normal HRV (SDNN ≥20ms or RMSSD ≥19ms). Primary endpoints were overall and cancer free survival. Results A total of 428 patients were included in this study. HRV was not significantly associated with overall survival (SDNN <20ms vs SDNN ≥20ms:24.4% vs 22.8%, adjusted HR = 0.952 (0.607–1.493), p = 0.829; RMSSD <19ms vs RMSSD ≥19ms:27.0% vs 19.5%, adjusted HR = 1.321 (0.802–2.178), p = 0.274) or cancer recurrence (SDNN <20ms vs ≥20ms:20.1% vs 18.7%, adjusted HR = 0.976 (0.599–1.592), p = 0.924; RMSSD <19ms vs ≥19ms, 21.5% vs 16.9%, adjusted HR = 1.192 (0.706–2.011), p = 0.511). There was no significant association between HRV and CEA-level at one year follow-up, or between HRV and occurrence of a post-operative complication or the severity of post-operative complications. Conclusions Heart rate variability was not associated with overall or cancer free survival in patients with primary colorectal cancer who underwent curative surgical treatment. These results do not align with results found in studies including only patients with advanced cancer, which suggests that there is only an association in the other direction, cancer causing low HRV.

Abstract
The nervous system plays an important role in cancer initiation and progression. Accumulated evidences clearly show that the sympathetic nervous system exerts stimulatory effects on carcinogenesis and cancer growth. However, the role of the parasympathetic nervous system in cancer has been much less elucidated. Whereas retrospective studies in vagotomized patients and experiments employing vagotomized animals indicate the parasympathetic nervous system has an inhibitory effect on cancer, clinical studies in patients with prostate cancer indicate it has stimulatory effects. Therefore, the aim of this paper is a critical evaluation of the available data related to the role of the parasympathetic nervous system in cancer.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Considering that heart rate (HR) autonomic control is impaired in cancer and subsequent respiratory effort may overload the heart, we aimed to evaluate the effect of a respiratory physical therapy session on HR autonomic regulation in children with leukemia so as to confirm its safety. METHODS We selected children with leukemia (n = 10) and healthy children (n = 11), which were submitted to a session of respiratory physical therapy. We used Spiron Kids (NCS, Brazil), Children's Voldyne (HUDSON RCI, USA), and Shaker (NCS, Brazil) as respiratory devices. The respiratory exercise protocols were founded on three standardized protocols. HR variability (HRV) was analyzed before, in the first minute and 5 to 10 min after intervention. RESULTS We recognized no change between rest and recovery from intervention in HRV (rMSSD-square root mean square of the differences between adjacent normal R-R intervals)-Control: p = 0.8111, Leukemia: p = 0.1197, among groups: p = 0.6574; SD1-standard deviation from instantaneous beat-to-beat variability-Control: p = 0.8111, Leukemia: p = 0.131, among groups: p = 0.6556; 0V-with no variation (3 equal symbols, for example (2,2,2)-Control: p = 0.3679, Leukemia: p = 0.3553, among groups: p = 0.7421); 2UV-with two variations to the contrary (the three symbols form a peak or a valley, for instance (3,5,3)-Control: p = 0.3679, Leukemia: p = 0.2359, among groups: p = 0.4007). HF-high frequency component, range 0.15 to 0.4 Hz-decreased 0 to 1 min after intervention in the leukemia group (p = 0.0303) and no change was observed in the control group between rest versus recovery from intervention (p = 0.9761). No significant change was reported in HF between groups (p = 0.8700). Two leukemia subjects treated with vincristine presented different HRV responses to the intervention group. CONCLUSION A respiratory physical therapy session did not significantly change autonomic control of HR in children with leukemia. Yet, clinicians should be mindful of subjects undergoing treatment with vincristine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxiety and depression are prevalent in women with breast cancer. These can affect their autonomic nervous system and hemodynamic stability, which are important factors during operation. We aimed to assess the effect of anxiety and depression on heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with breast cancer. METHODS Forty-nine women with breast cancer, scheduled for surgery, were asked to complete depression and anxiety questionnaires and categorized into depressed/non-depressed and anxious/non-anxious groups. Their electrocardiography (EKG) were assessed for 150 s on admission, before, and after induction of anesthesia for the presence, frequency, and range of HRV. Patients' blood pressure (BP) and HR were recorded, and normal unit high frequency (nuHF), normal unit low frequency (nuLF), LF/HF ratio, HRV index, and systolic and diastolic BP were compared between the groups in three intervals. RESULTS Anxious and depressed groups had a significantly higher systolic, diastolic, and mean BP before and after induction and higher nuLF before induction, while the changes in nuLF, LF/HF ratio, and HRV index were not significant. Both groups with and without mood disorders had increased BP and HR before induction, which decreased after induction (P < 0.001). Decreased mean BP after induction was associated with anxiety (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION According to the results of this study, patients with depression had less HRV in the operating theater, than the non-depressed group. After induction of anesthesia, the decrease in BP was associated with anxiety, while BP of the depressed group was higher than the non-depressed group at all intervals.

Abstract
Alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) is one of the main subtypes of nAChRs that modulates various cancer-related properties including proliferative, anti-apoptotic, pro-angiogenic and pro-metastatic activities in most of the cancers. It also plays a crucial role in inflammation control through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway in numerous pathophysiological contexts. Such diverse physiological and pathological functions that initiate from this receptor may have significant impacts in determining the outcome of different cancers. Various tissues of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers such as gastric, colorectal, pancreatic and liver cancers have shown the up-regulated expression of α7nAChR as compared to normal adjacent tissues. According to the well-established connection between inflammation and tumorigenesis in the digestive system, there are mounting studies demonstrated either stimulatory or inhibitory effects of α7nAChR signaling in the development of GI cancers. To date, the precise underlying mechanisms related to this receptor in patients with GI cancers have not been fully elucidated. Regarding the paradoxical modulatory effects of this receptor in carcinogenesis, in this review, we aim to summarize the accumulated evidence about the involvement of α7nAChR in inflammation-associated GI cancers. It seems that the complex influences of α7nAChR may be a promising target in designing novel strategies in the treatment of such pathologic conditions.

Abstract
A recent meta-analysis revealed that cardiac vagal activity (mostly indicated by vagally-mediated heart rate variability; HRV) decreases significantly from the follicular to luteal menstrual cycle phase in naturally-cycling participants. However, the question remains as to whether cyclical changes in estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), or both are responsible for HRV fluctuations. We present the first studies to use repeated measures of E2, P4, and HRV across the cycle to model both the unique and interactive effects of person-centered E2 and P4 on HRV in multilevel models. In study one, 40 naturally-cycling participants were assessed weekly across four weeks, and were blind to the cycle focus of the study. In study two, 50 naturally-cycling participants were examined in three precisely defined cycle phases via ovulation testing. Both studies revealed that only P4 was correlated with HRV, such that higher-than-usual P4 significantly predicted lower-than-usual HRV within a given participant. In line with this, cycle phase comparisons revealed lower HRV in the mid-luteal phase (characterized by elevated P4) than in other phases. No significant main or interactive effects of E2 on HRV were found. Future female health studies should investigate individual differences in these effects and potential consequences of cyclical HRV changes on daily functioning.

Abstract
Interest in cardiac vagal activity (CVA; e.g., parasympathetically-mediated heart rate variability) as a biomarker of physical and mental health has increased exponentially in recent years. However, the understanding of sources of within-person change (i.e., intra-individual variance) in CVA is lagging behind. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes and quantifies current empirical evidence of within-person changes in measures of CVA across the menstrual cycle in naturally-cycling premenopausal females. We conducted an extensive literature search following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement in five databases to identify observational studies with repeated measures of CVA in at least two menstrual cycle phases. A broad meta-analysis (nstudies = 37; nindividuals = 1,004) revealed a significant CVA decrease from the follicular to luteal phase (d = −0.39, 95% CI (−0.67, −0.11)). Furthermore, 21 studies allowed for finer-grained comparisons between each of two cycle phases (menstrual, mid-to-late follicular, ovulatory, early-to-mid luteal, and premenstrual). Significant decreases in CVA were observed from the menstrual to premenstrual (nstudies = 5; nindividuals = 200; d = −1.17, 95% CI (−2.18, −0.17)) and from the mid-to-late follicular to premenstrual phases (nstudies = 8; nindividuals = 280; d = −1.32, 95% CI (−2.35, −0.29)). In conclusion, meta-analyses indicate the presence of CVA fluctuations across the menstrual cycle. Future studies involving CVA should control for cycle phase. Recommendations for covarying or selecting cycle phase are provided.

Abstract
Excessive chronic inflammation is linked to many diseases and considered a stress factor in humans (Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease. Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders Co., 1999, Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, 2008, 105: 17949, Immunity, 44, 2016, 44: 463, N Engl J Med, 2011, 364: 656). Today, the resolution of inflammation is widely recognized as a cellular biochemically active process involving biosynthesis of a novel superfamily of endogenous chemical signals coined specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs; Nature, 2014, 510:92). Herein, we review recent evidence, indicating a role for the vagus nerve and vagotomy in the regulation of lipid mediators. Vagotomy reduces pro-resolving mediators, including the lipoxins, resolvins, protectins and maresins, delaying resolution in mouse peritonitis. Vagotomy also delays resolution of Escherichia coli infection in mice. Specifically, right vagus regulates peritoneal Group 3 innate lymphoid cell (ILC-3) number and peritoneal macrophage responses with lipid mediator profile signatures with elevated pro-inflammatory eicosanoids and reduced resolvins, including the novel protective immunoresolvent agonist protectin conjugate in tissue regeneration1 (PCTR1). Acetylcholine upregulates PCTR biosynthesis, and administration of PCTR1 to vagotomized mice restores tissue resolution and host responses to E. coli infections. Results obtained with human vagus ex vivo indicate that vagus can produce both pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, as well as the SPM. Electrical stimulation of human vagus in vitro reduces both prostaglandins and leukotrienes and enhances resolvins and the other SPM. These results elucidate a host protective mechanism mediated by vagus stimulation of SPM that includes resolvins and PCTR1 to regulate myeloid antimicrobial functions and resolution of infection. Moreover, they define a new pro-resolution of inflammation reflex operative in mice and human tissue that involves a vagus SPM circuit.

Abstract
The lung tissue expresses the cholinergic system including nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) which included in many physiologic and pathologic processes. Mounting evidence revealed that these receptors have important roles in lung carcinogenesis via modulating either stimulatory or inhibitory signaling pathways. Among different members of nicotinic receptors family, alpha7-subtype of nAChR (α7nAChR) is a critical mediator involved in both inflammatory responses and cancers. Several studies have shown that this receptor is the most powerful regulator of responses that stimulate lung cancer processes such as proliferation, angiogenesis, metastasis, and inhibition of apoptosis. Moreover, aside from its roles in the regulation of cancer pathways, there is growing evidence indicating that α7nAChR has profound impacts on lung inflammation through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Regarding such diverse effects as well as the critical roles of nicotine as an activator of α7nAChR on lung cancer pathogenesis, its modulation has emerged as a promising target for drug developments. In this review, we aim to highlight the detrimental as well as the possible beneficial influences of α7nAChR downstream signaling cascades in the control of lung inflammation and cancer-associated properties. Consequently, by considering the significant global burden of lung cancer, delineating the complex influences of α7 receptors would be of great interest in designing novel anticancer and anti-inflammatory strategies for the patients suffering from lung cancer.

Abstract
The present work was undertaken to study the effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on 1, 2-dimethyhydrazine (DMH) induced colon cancer and role of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathways (CAP) in the same. Groups of rats were randomly divided into ten groups (n = 8). DMH administration was very well apparent for autonomic dysfunction as observed through distorted hemodynamic (electrocardiogram and heart rate variability), increased aberrant crypt foci and flat neoplastic lesions (methylene blue staining, scanning electron microscopy and Hematoxylin and eosin staining). DMH administration was also recorded for per-oxidative damage. taVNS application restored the autonomic function, cellular morphology and curtailed the oxidative damage. DMH application conspicuously inhibited the mitochondrial apoptosis which was restored back after taVNS application, when scrutinized through immunoblotting and quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction studies. taVNS application up-regulated the CAP as perceived through increased expression for α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor(α7nAchR) and decreased expression for nuclear factor kappa-ligand-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NFκBp65), tissue necrosis factor-α and high mobility group box-1 at protein and mRNA levels. All in all, taVNS up-surged the CAP to counteract DMH induced colon carcinogenesis. Among all the stimulation parameters used, taVNS 3 (pulse width-1 ms, frequency-6 Hz, voltage-6 v, duration-240 min) was observed to be the most effective. Since only chemotherapy and surgery are available options for management of CRC, which are troublesome and painful, there is currently no non-invasive method available for management of CRC. Results of the current study affirmed the effectiveness of taVNS against DMH induced colon cancer. The present study established taVNS as a novel and non-invasive approach toward the management of CRC.
