Abstract
BACKGROUND Many young adults report poor diet quality. However, research evaluating whether young adult males and females differ in diet quality is limited. Additionally, although diet quality has a known inverse association with body mass index (BMI), it is unclear whether this association is observed in young adults and whether it varies by gender. The present study aimed to evaluate gender differences in diet quality in young adults, as well as the associations between diet quality and BMI. METHODS Data collected via the Healthy Eating Quiz (HEQ) in respondents aged 18-35 years between July 2019 and December 2021 were analysed, including demographics, and diet quality calculated using the Australian Recommended Food Score (ARFS). Differences in characteristics were analysed using a two-sample t-test, chi-squared and one-way analysis of covariance. Linear regressions were performed to estimate associations between diet quality and BMI. An interaction term was included in the model to test differences between genders. RESULTS The respondents (n = 28,969) were predominantly female (70.8%) with a mean ± SD age of 25.9 ± 5.0 years and BMI of 24.6 ± 5.2 kg/m2. The mean ± SD ARFS was significantly different between females and males (33.1 ± 8.6 vs. 31.4 ± 9.3 points out of 70; p < 0.001). Diet quality had a small, significant inverse association with BMI in both genders. The interaction effect between diet quality score and gender in predicting BMI was significant (p < 0.001), suggesting the impact of diet quality on BMI varies by gender, with lower diet quality more strongly associated with higher BMI in females compared to males. CONCLUSION Interventions that target young adults are needed to improve diet quality and its potential contribution to BMI status. As a result of the small observed effect sizes, caution should be applied in interpreting these findings.

Abstract
Introduction Vocal analysis of fundamental frequency (f0) represents a suitable index to assess emotional activation. However, although f0 has often been used as an indicator of emotional arousal and different affective states, its psychometric properties are unclear. Specifically, there is uncertainty regarding the validity of the indices of f0mean and f0variabilitymeasures (f0dispersion, f0range, and f0SD) and whether higher or lower f0 indices are associated with higher arousal in stressful situations. The present study therefore aimed to validate f0 as a marker of vocally encoded emotional arousal, valence, and body-related distress during body exposure as a psychological stressor. Methods N = 73 female participants first underwent a 3-min, non-activating neutral reference condition, followed by a 7-min activating body exposure condition. Participants completed questionnaires on affect (i.e., arousal, valence, body-related distress), and their voice data and heart rate (HR) were recorded continuously. Vocal analyses were performed using Praat, a program for extracting paralinguistic measures from spoken audio. Results The results revealed no effects for f0 and state body dissatisfaction or general affect. F0mean correlated positively with self-reported arousal and negatively with valence, but was not correlated with HRmean/maximum. No correlations with any measure were found for any f0variabililtymeasures. Discussion Given the promising findings regarding f0mean for arousal and valence and the inconclusive findings regarding f0 as a marker of general affect and body-related distress, it may be assumed that f0mean represents a valid global marker of emotional arousal and valence rather than of concrete body-related distress. In view of the present findings regarding the validity of f0, it may be suggested that f0mean, but not f0variabilitymeasures, can be used to assess emotional arousal and valence in addition to self-report measures, which is less intrusive than conventional psychophysiological measures.

Abstract
Introduction The current study evaluated obesity prevalence, physical activity, and dietary practices among Saudi adults in the Makkah region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The current survey was accomplished between November 2021 and March 2022. Method A validated questionnaire, Arab Teens Lifestyle Study (ATLS), was used to evaluate all participants' physical activities, sedentary behaviors, and nutritional habits in addition to demographic data. Result A total of 2,115 people [1,238 (58.5%) women and 877 (41.5%) men] participated in this survey. Being overweight was prevalent in 32.8% of the population (41% of men and 28.9% of women), obesity was prevalent in 23% of the population (males 23.1% and females 24.2%). Obese people consumed more soft drinks, and overweight people did not consume enough vegetables (fresh/cooked). Obese people consumed fast food (e.g., burgers, sausage, pizza, or Arabic shawarma) over three times each week. The mean (SD) number of days of practice walking was 2.51 (2.05) vs. 1.3 (1.87) (p < 0.001) for lean and obese individuals, respectively. In addition, individuals with normal BMI had more days of jogging, moderate and high-intensity exercise, dancing, and strength training than those with obesity. The odds of being obese increased with age (OR: 1.07; p < 0.001), in males (OR: 2.16; p < 0.001), in participants earning <5,000 SR/month (1.3 thousand $) and 10-15 thousand SR/month (1.34-2.66 thousand $) (OR: 2.36; P = 0.01). Obesity was inversely associated with moderate-intensity exercise (OR: 0.802; p = 0.009), and regular walking (OR: 0.685; CI: 0.624-0.752; p < 0.001). Discussion Overweight and obesity were prevalent in 32.8% and 23% of the population, respectively. Sociodemographic factors associated with obesity. Focused intervention strategies are needed to overcome the obesity issue.

Abstract
This randomized, controlled clinical trial examined the impact of a web-based weight loss intervention on diet quality. Furthermore, it was investigated whether corresponding changes in diet quality were associated with changes in measures of cardiovascular risk profile. Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 27.5 to 34.9 kg/m2 and an age of 18 to 65 y were assigned to either an interactive and fully automated web-based weight loss program focusing on dietary energy density (intervention) or a non-interactive web-based weight loss program (control). Examinations were performed at baseline (t0), after the 12-week web-based intervention (t1), and after an additional 6 (t2) and 12 months (t3). Based on a dietary record, the Healthy Eating Index-NVS (HEI-NVS) was calculated and analyzed using a robust linear mixed model. In addition, bootstrapped correlations were performed independently of study group to examine associations between change in HEI-NVS and change in dietary, anthropometric, and cardiometabolic variables. A total of n = 153 participants with a mean BMI of 30.71 kg/m2 (SD 2.13) and an average age of 48.92 y (SD 11.17) were included in the study. HEI-NVS improved significantly in the intervention group from baseline (t0) to t2 (p = 0.003) and to t3 (p = 0.037), whereby the course was significantly different up to t2 (p = 0.013) and not significantly different up to t3 (p = 0.054) compared to the control group. Independent of study group, there was a significant negative association between change in HEI-NVS and dietary energy density. A higher total score in HEI-NVS did not correlate with improvements in cardiovascular risk profile. The interactive and fully automated web-based weight loss program improved diet quality. Independent of study group, changes in HEI-NVS correlated with changes in energy density, but there was no association between improvements in HEI-NVS and improvements in cardiovascular risk profile.

Trends in concurrent tobacco use and heavy drinking among individuals 15 years and older in Mongolia. Sci Rep 2022; 12:16639. Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate trends in the prevalence and correlates of current tobacco use only (= CT), current heavy drinking only (= CHD), and current tobacco use and current heavy drinking (= CTHD) in people 15 years and older from 2009 to 2019 in Mongolia. Cross-sectional data were analyzed from 5,438 individuals (15-64 years) of the Mongolia STEPS 2009 survey, 6,013 (15-69 years) of the Mongolia STEPS 2013 survey, and 6,654 persons (15-69 years) of the Mongolia STEPS 2019 survey and responded to questions about substance use, other health risk behaviours and physical measurements. Trend analysis shows that the prevalence of CT increased from 14.4% in 2009 to 15.3% in 2019, and the prevalence of CHD significantly decreased from 13.3% in 2009 to 10.3% in 2019, and the prevalence of CTHD significantly decreased from 14.2% in 2009 to 9.4% in 2019. Middle and older age, male sex (13 times higher for CT, 3.4 times higher for CHD, and 28 times higher for CTHD) and high physical activity significantly increased the odds of CT, CHD and CTHD. Higher education decreased the odds of CT but increased the odds of CHD. Urban residence was positively associated with CT, and among women with CTHD. Underweight decreased the odds of CT, CHD, and CTHD, and obesity decreased the odds of CT and CTHD and increased the odds of CHD. Hypertension was positively associated with CHD and CTHD, while sedentary behaviour was positively associated with CT and CTHD. Being Khalkh by ethnicity increased the odds of CT and inadequate fruit and vegetable intake increased the odds of CHD. More than one in six persons 15 years and older engaged in CT and more than one in ten engaged in CHD and CTHD. Several sociodemographic factors, such as male sex and middle and/or older age, and health variables, such as obesity and hypertension for CHD, were identified associated with CT, CHD, and CTHD that can help in guiding public interventions.

Abstract
Background The pleural space can resorb 0.11–0.36 ml/kg of body weight/hour (h) per hemithorax. There are only a limited number of studies on thresholds for chest drain removal (CDR) and all are based on arbitrary amounts, for example, 300 ml/day. We studied an individualized size-based threshold for CDR–specifically 5 ml/kg, a simple, easily applicable measure. Methods This is a single-center prospective randomized trial enrolling 80 patients undergoing VATS lobectomy. There were two groups: an experimental (E) group, in which once the daily output went down to 5 ml/kg the chest drain was removed and a control (C) group, with chest drain removal as per our current practice of less than 250 ml/day. Results The groups did not differ in pre- and peri- and postoperative characteristics, except for chest drain duration (mean, SD 2.02 ± 0.97 vs. 3.25 ± 1.39 days, p < 0.001) and length of hospital stay (median, IQR 4.5; 3 vs. 6; 2.75 days, p = 0.008) in favor of E group. The re-intervention rate was the same in both groups (once in each group). Conclusion The new threshold for chest drain removal following thoracoscopic lobectomy of 5 ml/kg/d leads to both shorter chest drainage and hospital stay without apparent increase in morbidity. Abstract
Background Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a method used to evaluate linear causal relationships among variables. This study aimed to investigate the direct and indirect effects of serum 25(OH) D on certain cardiovascular risk factors using SEM. Methods An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in six provinces of Iran. Subjects (n = 922), aged 19–65 years, were selected from National Food and Nutrition Surveillance. The assessments were sun-exposure behavior, anthropometric and biochemical measurements. A series of SEM models were tested and the model with the best fit indices was considered for use in the structural part of the model. Based on the literature review of previous theoretical models and supporting bivariate analyses, an overall SEM examined direct or indirect associations among observed and latent variables. We put the demographic, duration of sun exposure, anthropometric and metabolic variables in our model. Results The paths between serum 25(OH) D and BMI were inverse and statistically significant, whereas age showed a positive association with BMI (B = 0.06, p < 0.001), both direct (st. effect = 0.11, p = 0.01) and indirect via vitamin D (st. effect = − 0.02, p = 0.01). The results confirmed that serum 25(OH) D concentration is a predictor for latent variable of lipid profile (B = − 0.13, p = 0.01) both through direct (p = 0.02) and indirect effects via BMI (p = 0.01). Conclusion Serum 25(OH) D concentration is a predictor of BMI and also a latent variable of lipid profile via direct and indirect effects. It can also attenuate the harmful effect of age on BMI and lipid profile particularly in women.

Abstract
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and correlates of overweight and obesity among adults in Iraq. Data from a 2015 nationally representative cross-sectional survey of 3916 persons 18 years or older (M (median) age = 40 years, IQR (interquartile range) age = 29–52 years; men: M = 41 years, IQR = 29–54 years; women: M = 40 years, IQR = 30–51 years) who responded to a questionnaire, and physical and biochemical measures were analysed. Multinomial logistic regression was utilised to predict the determinants of overweight and obesity relative to under or normal weight. The results indicate that 3.6% of the participants were underweight (body mass index (BMI) <18.5 kg/m2), 30.8% had normal weight (BMI 18.5–24.9 kg/m2), 31.8% were overweight (25.0–29.9 kg/m2), and 33.9% had obesity (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2). In the adjusted multinomial logistic regression, being aged 40–49 years (compared to 18–39 years old) (adjusted relative risk ratio (ARRR): 4.47, confidence interval (CI): 3.39–5.91), living in an urban residence (ARRR: 1.28, CI: 1.14–2.18), and having hypertension (ARRR: 3.13, CI: 2.36–4.17) were positively associated with obesity. Being male (ARRR: 0.47, CI: 0.33–0.68), having more than primary education (ARRR: 0.69, CI: 0.50–0.94), and having a larger household size (five members or more) (ARRR: 0.45, CI: 0.33–0.60) were negatively associated with obesity. Approximately two in three adult participants were overweight/obese, and sociodemographic and health risk factors were found that can be utilised in targeting interventions.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine whether the association between body mass index (BMI) and the intake of macronutrients varies along the BMI distribution of German adults. Based on a sample of 9214 men and women aged 18-80 years from the representative cross-sectional German National Nutrition Survey (NVS) II, quantile regression was used to investigate the association between BMI and the intake of macronutrients independent of energy intake and other predictors. In both sexes, BMI was positively associated with the intake of total protein and animal protein over its entire range and negatively associated with vegetable protein. A negative association between BMI and the intake of polysaccharides was found along the entire range of BMI in men. There was a weak negative association between BMI and the intake of total fat and saturated fatty acids observed in normal-weight-range women only. In conclusion, the association between BMI and the intake of macronutrients varies along the BMI range. Animal protein intake is positively associated with BMI independent of energy intake in both sexes whereas only in men an inverse association of polysaccharide intake with BMI was shown.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION the study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with underweight and overweight or obesity in an adult population in Kenya. METHODS data from a cross-sectional nationally representative community-based study in Kenya (N=4283, 18-69 years) conducted in 2015 was utilized. Assessments included anthropometric, interview, blood pressure and biochemistry mesures. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the determinants of underweight and overweight or obesity relative to normal weight. RESULTS in all, 11.9% of the study sample was underweight (BMI <18.5kg/m2), 60.1% had normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9kg/m2), 18.9% overweight (25.0-29.9kg/m2) and 9.1% obesity (BMI ≥30.0kg/m2). In adjusted multinomial logistic regression, male sex (adjusted relative risk ratio-ARRR: 1.47, confidence interval-CI: 1.01, 2.13), lower education (ARRR: 0.63, CI: 0.46, 0.88), lower wealth status (ARRR: 0.47, CI: 0.29, 0.78), inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption (ARRR: 1.79, CI: 1.19, 2.70), adding daily sugar into beverages (ARRR: 1.49, CI: 1.01, 2.22) and having no hypertension (ARRR: 0.54, CI: 0.40, 0.74) were associated with underweight. Factors associated with overweight or obesity were middle and older age (ARRR: 2.15, CI: 1.46, 3.80), being female (ARRR: 0.30, CI: 0.22, 0.41), higher education (ARRR: 1.61, CI: 1.26, 2.24), greater wealth (ARRR: 2.38, CI: 1.41, 3.50), being a Kikuyu by ethnic group (ARRR: 1.68, CI: 1.19, 2.37), urban residence (ARRR: 1.45, CI: 1.06, 1.99), no current tobacco use (ARRR: 0.39, CI: 0.24, 0.54), low physical activity (ARRR: 1.49, CI: 1.02, 2.18) and having hypertension (ARRR: 1.96, CI: 1.54, 2.50). CONCLUSION more than one in ten were underweight and almost three in ten were overweight or obese among adults in Kenya. Several risk factors, including sociodemographic, lifestyle and health status risk variables, were identified for underweight and overweight or obesity, which can assist in developing intervention strategies targeting both these conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone density in the young-adult life is associated with risk for osteoporosis in later life. Next to genetic factors, lifestyle seems to play an important role for bone health. Aim of the study was to clarify the relationship between various lifestyle factors and bone parameters in university students. METHODS In 233 women and 52 men (age: 22.7±3.1 vs. 24.0±3.2 years; BMI: 22.2±2.9 vs. 24.2±3.1 kg∙m-2) the following parameters were assessed: calcaneal Stiffness Index ([SI]; quantitative ultrasound), body composition (bioelectrical impedance analysis), actual and past physical activity level ([PAL]; standardized questionnaire), and food/nutrient intake (3-day dietary record). Sex differences (Mann-Whitney-U-tests), relationships between SI and lifestyle factors (Spearman's rank correlation), and the influence of the factors on the variance of SI (multiple linear regression) were tested (α=0.05). RESULTS 6.9% of the women and 5.8% of the men were classified as osteopenic (-2.5< T score <-1). Significant correlations between SI and BMI, absolute fat mass and fat-free mass, actual PAL, and physical activity during adolescence were found in women (r=0.18-0.24, all P<0.05), but not in men. Food/nutrient parameters did not significantly correlate with bone outcomes (P>0.05). In multiple regression analysis physical activity during adolescence, actual PAL, and BMI explained 8% of the variance of SI (P<0.0001): SI=32.2+3.5∙physical activity during adolescence [1: very low, 2: low, 3: medium, 4: high, 5: very high] +28.5∙PAL+0.8∙BMI [kg∙m-2]. CONCLUSIONS Parameters of physical activity seem to be more important for bone health than nutrition factors. Therefore, high levels of physical activity during childhood, adolescence, and early-adult life are highly recommended to improve bone parameters.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aimed to assess the prevalence of underweight and overweight or obesity and their sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health factors in a national adult population in Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) (Laos). METHODS A national cross-sectional study based on a stratified cluster random sampling was conducted in 2013. The total sample included 2531 individuals 18-64 years, (females = 59.3%; mean age 38.7 years, SD = 12.8) from Laos. Questionnaire interview, blood pressure and anthropometric measurements, and biochemistry tests were conducted. Multinomial logistic regression was utilized to determine the association between sociodemographic, lifestyle and health status factors, and underweight and overweight or obesity relative to normal weight. RESULTS Using Asian criteria for body mass index (BMI) classification, 9.7% of the population was underweight (BMI < 18.5, kg/m2), 47.5% had normal weight (BMI 18.5-22.9 kg/m2), 17.5% overweight (23.0-24.9 kg/m2), 19.6% class I obesity (BMI 25.0-29.9 kg/m2), and 5.6% class II obesity (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2) (or 42.8% overweight, class I or class II obesity). In adjusted multinomial logistic regression, female sex (adjusted relative risk ratio-ARRR 0.67, confidence interval-CI 0.45, 0.99), current tobacco use (ARRR 1.57, CI 1.02, 2.41), and having no hypertension (ARRR 0.50, CI 0.26, 0.97) were associated with underweight, and middle and older age (ARRR 1.79, CI 1.41, 2.25), being Lao-Tai (ARRR 1.37, CI 1.06, 1.76), urban residence (ARRR 1.62, CI 1.20, 2.17), having meals outside home (ARRR 1.36, CI 1.04, 1.77), no current tobacco use (ARRR 0.57, CI 0.34, 0.59), low physical activity (ARRR 1.39, CI 1.01, 1.92), having hypertension (ARRR 2.52, CI 1.94, 3.26), and dyslipidaemia (ARRR 1.56, CI 1.21, 2.00) were associated with overweight or obesity. CONCLUSION A dual burden of both adult underweight and overweight or obesity was found in Laos. Sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health status risk factors were identified for underweight and overweight or obesity, which can help in guiding public health programmes to address both these conditions. Abstract
In spite of the high prevalence of overweight and obesity among the Orang Asli (OA) of Malaysia being an increasing concern due to the associated adverse health implications, information regarding this issue is scarce. This cross-sectional study is aimed to investigate the predictors of overweight and obesity and its association with blood pressure and quality of life among Senoi OA women. A total of 19 villages at Batang Padang, Perak, were selected out of a total of 56 villages using a simple random sampling, in which 355 Senoi OA women were participated in the study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to obtain information on sociodemographic characteristics, dietary intake, physical activity, and quality of life. Weight, height and blood pressure were also measured. The prevalence of overweight and obesity were 32.4% and 26.2%, respectively. In terms of multiple linear regression, monthly household income, total energy intake, and metabolic equivalents (METs) for domestic activities were found to have significantly contributed to body mass index (BMI). Furthermore, BMI contributed significantly towards levels of blood pressure and quality of life after controlling for monthly household income, total energy intake, and METs for domestic activities. In conclusion, there should be urgent attention to poverty and overweight/obesity among the OA women. The findings would aid in alerting policy makers and health professionals as underweight is no longer a sole nutritional problem among OA but it appears to be coexisting with overweight and obesity. Strategies for improving their socioeconomic status, promoting a balanced and moderate diet, and encouraging involvement of OA women in physical activities should be implemented to prevent overweight and obesity.

Abstract
The relationship between aging and perception of health and quality of life is complex and its mediation mechanisms need to be further explored. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of total energy expenditure and intake, body mass, and body image dissatisfaction on the relationship between age and perception of health and quality of life. Forty-two senior athletes, 55 physically active, and 61 sedentary individuals (aged 55–84 years) were evaluated for total energy expenditure (EE), energy intake (EI), body mass index (BMI), absolute Body Dissatisfaction Index (BDIabx), and physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) health and quality of life perception. Multiple mediation analyses were applied to assess the relationship between age and PCS and MCS indices, through the mediators EE, EI, BMI, and BDIabx. For MCS, but not for PSC, the mediation analysis showed: (a) a direct effect of age; (b) a mediation path through EE, EI, BMI, and BDIabx; and (c) a positive total effect. The combination of positive and negative mediating effects influencing the mental health perception underlined that with advancing age, the maintenance of high levels of energy expenditure through physical activity could positively impact body image satisfaction and, in turn, mental health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to investigate comprehensively, the risk factors for underweight in cross-sectional study in the general population of Japan. METHODS The survey population was the general population of individuals aged >40 years in Takahata town, Japan in 2005. A postal survey in the form of a self-administered questionnaire was distributed, and 6084 individuals were entered into the final statistical analysis. The self-administered questionnaire contained items regarding lifestyle, oral health status, socio-economic status and dietary intake. To examine the independent relationships between an underweight status and several parameters, a multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs). RESULTS The number of teeth, age, alcohol consumption, hypertension, spousal status, smoking habit, appetite, body weight at 20 years of age, habit of going out and physical activity were independently associated with an underweight status compared with the normal weight group. Individuals with fewer than 10 teeth were especially more likely to be underweight than individuals with more than 20 teeth (OR = 1.956, 95% CI = 1.261-3.035). CONCLUSION This study showed an independent association between the number of teeth and an underweight status, indicating that fewer teeth can increase the risk of being underweight.

Abstract
Objective To quantify the prevalence of underweight and overweight or obesity and its related factors (socio-demographic, health behavior, health status) in a national adult population in Indonesia. Material and Methods In a national cross-sectional population-based survey in 2014–15 in Indonesia, 29509 adults (median age 41.0 years, Inter Quartile Range = 22.0, age range of 18–103 years) completed questionnaires and anthropometric measurements. Multinomial logistic regression modelling was used to determine the association between socio-demographic, health behavior and health status factors and underweight and overweight or obesity. Results Of total sample (n = 29509), 11.2% measured underweight (13.5% among men and 9.1% among women) (<18.5 kg/m2), 39.8% normal weight (48.1% among men and 32.0% among women) and 49.0% had overweight or obesity (≥23 kg/m2) (38.3% among men and 58.9% among women); 24.6% of the overall sample had class I obesity (25–29.9 kg/m2), and 8.5% had class II obesity (30 or more kg/m2). Among different age groups, underweight was the highest among 18–29 year-olds (20.0%) and those 70 years and older (29.8%), while overweight or obesity was the highest in the age group 30 to 59 years (more than 53%). In adjusted multinomial logistic regression, having less education, living in rural areas and not having chronic conditions were associated with underweight status. While better education, higher economic status, urban residency, dietary behavior (infrequent meals, frequent meat, fried snacks and fast food consumption), physical inactivity, not using tobacco, having chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterol), and better perceived health and happiness status were associated with overweight or obesity. Conclusions A dual burden of both adult underweight and having overweight or obesity was found in Indonesia. Sociodemographic, health risk behavior and health status risk factors were identified, which can guide public health interventions to address both these conditions.

Reasons, Motivational Factors, and Perceived Personal Barriers to Engagement in Physical Activity During Pregnancy Vary Within the BMI Classes: The Prenatal Prevention Project Germany. Abstract
BACKGROUND International data indicate that approximately only 20.0% of pregnant women reach physical activity recommendations (≥150 min/wk). To find ways for increasing physical activity, the reasons for exercising, motivational factors, and barriers need to be determined. The aim of this pilot study was to identify these factors in respect to body mass index classification in German pregnant women. METHODS A total of 61 women [age: 32.7 (4.8) y; 13.3 (3.4) wk of gestation] participated in this study. Before pregnancy, 10.0% of women were underweight, 58.3% were normal weight, 18.3% were overweight, and 13.4% were obese. Standardized questionnaires were used to evaluate the abovementioned factors. RESULTS "Fun" was one of the main reasons for being active in underweight/normal weight compared with overweight/obese women (53.7% vs 10.5%; P = .002), whereas "burning fat" was more important in overweight/obese women (9.8% vs 36.8%; P = .027). According to motivational factors, differences occurred in "calorie burning" (7.3% underweight/normal weight vs 31.6% overweight/obese; P = .025) and "fat burning" (7.3% underweight/normal weight vs 47.4% overweight/obese; P = .001). Regarding barriers for being active, "tiredness" was more often a barrier in overweight/obese (63.2%) compared with normal weight/underweight women (31.7%; P = .022). CONCLUSION Pregnant women should be given tailored advice/motivation according to prepregnancy body mass index. However, larger studies are necessary to evaluate these factors on pregnant women's physical activity level.
