Abstract
The objective of this cross-sectional study was to assess eating competence (EC) and the adherence to the division of responsibility in child feeding (sDOR) of Brazilian caregivers of children with celiac disease (CD). It also examined the association between EC and sDOR, children's adherence to a gluten-free diet, and sociodemographic data. This study administered a survey set that included sociodemographic data, health-related data, eating habits, and the instruments ecSI2.0TMBR and sDOR.2-6yTM BR, validated for a Brazilian population. The sample comprised 50 caregivers of children with CD (between 24 and 72 months of age). The participants following a gluten-free diet (GFD) presented higher scores for all EC domains and the total EC. The total EC scores were higher for the participants over 40 y/o, frequently having meals as a family, with their children consuming more than three servings of fruit and at least one serving of vegetables daily and complying with a GFD. Different from the EC, the sDOR.2-6yTM scores did not differ between the participants complying with a GFD. The sDOR.2-6yTM mealtime structure domain scores were significantly associated with the EC eating attitude, food acceptance, contextual skills, and total. These findings support the need for greater attention to exploring the division of responsibility in feeding and EC in pediatric celiac disease, potentially enhancing intervention strategies for patients and their families.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the BMI of the children with intellectual disability and the factors affecting their BMI. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out between March 2016 and April 2016 in Turkey and consisted of 135 children. Children's anthropometric measurements were and their BMI values were calculated. Categorization of children by BMI percentile according to AAP reference values was performed. There was a significant difference between the BMI categories of the children (p < 0.05) and the education level of children's father (x2 = 8.960; p = 0.028), the degree of intellectual disability (x2 = 16.113; p = 0.008), the presence of other disabilities (x2 = 22.013; p = 0.000), type of disability (x2 = 21.359; p = 0.001), the nutrient intake (x2 = 38.935; p = 0.000) and the presence of nutritional problems (x2 = 7.687; p = 0.042). Father's education level, children's degree of disability, child's having presence of other disabilities, child's being dependent in the view of nutrient intake, and child's having nutritional problems were determined as factors affecting BMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Unhealthy maternal diet leads to heavy metal exposures from the consumption of ultra-processed foods that may impact gene behavior across generations, creating conditions for the neurodevelopmental disorders known as autism and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children with these disorders have difficulty metabolizing and excreting heavy metals from their bloodstream, and the severity of their symptoms correlates with the heavy metal levels measured in their blood. Psychiatrists may play a key role in helping parents reduce their ultra-processed food and dietary heavy metal intake by providing access to effective nutritional epigenetics education. AIM To test the efficacy of nutritional epigenetics instruction in reducing parental ultra-processed food intake. METHODS The study utilized a semi-randomized test and control group pretest-posttest pilot study design with participants recruited from parents having a learning-disabled child with autism or ADHD. Twenty-two parents who met the inclusion criteria were randomly selected to serve in the test (n = 11) or control (n = 11) group. The test group participated in the six-week online nutritional epigenetics tutorial, while the control group did not. The efficacy of the nutritional epigenetics instruction was determined by measuring changes in parent diet and attitude using data derived from an online diet survey administered to the participants during the pre and post intervention periods. Diet intake scores were derived for both ultra-processed and whole/organic foods. Paired sample t-tests were conducted to determine any differences in mean diet scores within each group. RESULTS There was a significant difference in the diet scores of the test group between the pre- and post-intervention periods. The parents in the test group significantly reduced their intake of ultra-processed foods with a pre-intervention diet score of 70 (mean = 5.385, SD = 2.534) and a post-intervention diet score of 113 (mean = 8.692, SD = 1.750) and the paired t-test analysis showing a significance of P < 0.001. The test group also significantly increased their consumption of whole and/or organic foods with a pre-intervention diet score of 100 (mean = 5.882, SD = 2.472) and post-intervention diet score of 121 (mean = 7.118, SD = 2.390) and the paired t-test analysis showing a significance of P < 0.05. CONCLUSION Here we show nutritional epigenetics education can be used to reduce ultra-processed food intake and improve attitude among parents having learning-disabled children with autism or ADHD.

Abstract
Developing new food products for children is challenging, particularly in vulnerable groups including children with Down syndrome (DS). Focusing on children with DS, the aim of this study was to study the influence of parent liking on acceptance of food products by children with DS and demonstrate the influence of food sensory properties on indicators of food acceptance, food rejection, and challenging eating behaviours. Children (ages 1158 months) with DS (n = 111) participated in a home use test evaluating snack products with varying sensory properties as profiled by a trained sensory panel. Parents recorded their children's reactions to each food product; trained coders coded videos for eating behaviours. To understand the influence of each sensory modality on eating behaviour, ordered probit regression models were run. Results found a significant correlation between the parent liking and overall child disposition to the food (p < 0.05). From the regression analysis, the inclusion of all food sensory properties, including texture, flavour, taste, product shape and size, improved the percentage of variance explained in child mealtime behaviours and overall disposition over the base model (containing no sensory modalities), with texture having the largest influence. Overstuffing the mouth, a challenging eating behaviour, was most influenced by product texture (children ≥ 30 months), and product texture and size (children < 30 months). In both age groups, coughing/choking/gagging was most influenced by food texture and was associated with a product that was grainy and angular (sharp corners). In both age groups, product acceptance was associated with a product that was dissolvable, crispy, and savoury while rejection was associated with a dense, gummy and fruity product. These results suggest that a dissolvable, crispy texture, with a cheesy or buttery flavour are the sensory properties important in a desirable flavoured commercial snack product for children with DS; however, overall disposition must be balanced against mouth overstuffing.

Abstract
Parents of children with pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) often experience high stress and may be at advanced risk for mental health conditions. We conducted a retrospective chart review of 413 parents who completed intake surveys at an interdisciplinary feeding clinic to determine the prevalence and types of mental health conditions among parents; 41.8% of parents reported a mental health diagnosis among the mother and/or father. Of the parents with mental health conditions, the most prevalent conditions reported were anxiety (71.1% for mothers, 50% for fathers) and mood disorders (62.7% for mothers, 40.9% for fathers). For mothers, 21.1% indicated their mental health disorder had a postpartum onset. Parents of children with birth complications were more likely to have a mental health condition (50.9%) than parents of children without a birth complication (38.7%), and parents reporting mental health conditions had children with significantly more co-occurring medical conditions. Since parent stress and mental health can influence parent-child interactions during mealtime, this study suggests the importance of addressing both parent mental health factors and child factors when treating children for PFD. Future studies are needed to develop novel interventions that support the specific mental health needs of parents of children with PFD.

Abstract
Parental behaviours influence food acceptance in young children, but few studies have measured these behaviours using observational methods, especially among children with Down syndrome (CWDS). The overall goal of this study was to understand parent feeding practices used during snack time with young CWDS (N = 111, aged 11-58 months). A coding scheme was developed to focus on feeding practices used by parents of CWDS from a structured home-use test involving tasting variously textured snack products. Behavioural coding was used to categorise parental feeding practices and quantify their frequencies (N = 212 video feeding sessions). A feeding prompt was coded as successful if the child ate the target food product or completed the prompt within 20 s of the prompt being given without a refusal behaviour. CWDS more frequently consumed the test foods and completed tasks in response to Autonomy-Supportive Prompts to Eat (49.3%), than to Coercive-Controlling Prompts to Eat (24.2%). By exploring the parent-CWDS relationship during feeding, we can identify potentially desirable parent practices to encourage successful feeding for CWDS. Future research should build upon the knowledge gained from this study to confirm longitudinal associations of parent practices with child behaviours during feeding.

Abstract
PURPOSE This pilot study aimed to determine the parent/caregiver's role in nutrition/eating habits, physical activity behaviors, and food access among children diagnosed with spina bifida (SB). METHODS Parents/caregivers of children with SB were asked to participate at a single, outpatient SB clinic. Demographic, biomedical data, parent/caregiver nutrition knowledge, family nutrition and physical activity (FNPA), and food security survey scores were compared. Descriptive, regression, and correlational statistics were conducted for analysis via SPSS 29. RESULTS Of the 117 parents/caregivers surveyed, completed data suggested most were overweight/obese (average body mass index [BMI] of 30.63 kg/m2±8.40; n = 99) with an average nutrition knowledge score of 71% (17.83±3.33). As FNPA scores decreased, the patient/child's maximum BMI z scores increased (β= -0.043; confidence interval -0.079, -0.007; p = 0.020), suggesting the less active and/or less healthy eating habits, the higher body mass was noted for the child. Forty four percent of children (n = 99) were in the overweight/obese weight range based on maximum BMI z score. CONCLUSION These findings suggest there is a need for parental/caregiver nutrition education to assist children with SB with meal and activity planning to achieve optimal health.

Abstract
Fussy-eating children often display problematic behaviors around mealtimes, such as irritation, opposition, or may even throw tantrums. This may lead to reduced food variety and poor nutritional profiles, which may increase parents' worries about their children's diet, particularly when the children also have neurodevelopmental disorders (ND) such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). To investigate the effect of Taste Education on problematic mealtime behaviors, 81 children aged 8-12 years, with ND (n = 33) and without (n = 48), and their parents, participated in a 7-week Taste Education intervention. Children were matched on age, sex, and ND, and allocated at random into Immediate-intervention and Delayed-intervention groups. Parents completed the Meals in Our Household Questionnaire (MiOH). To examine changes in MiOH-scores, repeated-measures analysis-of-variance with time-points were used, with condition as factors (Immediate intervention and Delayed intervention). Baseline measures were adjusted for, and a robust linear mixed-model was fitted. Results showed superior outcomes for Intervention compared to waiting on all measures of MiOH, with stable effects through six-month follow-up. Differences were non-significant between children with and without ND. The Taste Education program suggests a promising, simple, and non-intrusive way to reduce children's problematic mealtime behaviors in the long term.

Abstract
Children with Down syndrome (DS) display a disproportionate number of health challenges, including feeding and swallowing difficulties and food texture sensitivities. To start addressing food texture challenges early in life, the aim of this research was to understand mealtime behaviors and identify preferred food textures of children with DS. Children (aged 11 to 58 months) with DS (n = 111) and without (typically developing, TD; n = 107) participated in a home use test evaluating snack products of varying textures. Parents recorded their children's reactions to each food product; a panel of trained coders coded videos for mealtime behaviors. Children were also identified as food texture sensitive (TS) or non-texture sensitive (NTS). Results showed that age, TS, the presence of a DS diagnosis and the TS*DS interaction influenced the child's behaviors to the food products. Children with DS were more likely to increase distance from the food, mouth/suck on the food, and less likely to chew/much on the food compared to children TD. Children with DS also ate significantly less than typically developing children. Similar mealtime behaviors were observed between the children with TD/<30 months of age and children with DS regardless of age (p < .05). While children with DS/TS had a higher disposition for the dissolvable texture, along with products that were salty and cheesy, children with DS/NTS had a greater tolerance for more textures in general, including crunchy and grainy. Overall, this research identified mealtime behaviors in children with DS, determined overall disposition of children with DS to foods of differences sensory properties, and demonstrated the influence of TS on a child's disposition to a food. This research will be extended to develop acceptable and innovative food products for children with DS/TS.

Abstract
Children with Down syndrome (DS) exhibit higher overweight and obesity rates than their typically developing peers, although it is unknown whether parent feeding practices for children with DS are associated with child weight status or parental and demographic factors, especially in the Hispanic and Latino populations. A prospective study of 68 children with DS from 2 to 7 years of age, who received care at a single, large, pediatric academic hospital was conducted to evaluate parent child feeding practices. Parents completed the Child Feeding Questionnaire+ (CFQ+) assessing seven primary factors of feeding practices and comparisons to children without DS were conducted. Data for body mass index (BMI) and BMI-for-sex/age z score (BMIz scores) were collected in clinic at the time of CFQ+ completion for both parent and child. Parents of children with DS endorsed higher perceived responsibility but lower concern about child weight and restriction compared to previously reported feeding practices in typically developing children. Hispanic/Latino parents of children with DS reported higher perceived responsibility and monitoring than non-Hispanic/Latino parents of children with DS. Higher BMIz scores in children with DS correlated with greater perceived child weight (p = 0.001) and concern about child weight (p = 0.008). Differences in BMIz scores were observed when comparing sex/ethnicity groups as determined by one-way ANOVA (F(3,64) = 4.170, p = 0.009); with Hispanic/Latino boys with DS more likely to have obesity. Our results suggest a need for specific DS Guidelines to educate providers and parents of children with DS on recommended feeding practices prior to parental concern about their child's weight, especially in the Hispanic/Latino population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research investigating feeding problems in children with Down syndrome is scarce. This study investigated feeding problems, eating behaviours and parental feeding practices in children with Down syndrome (n = 40), and typically developing (TD) children of the same age and sex (n = 40). METHOD Parents of children aged 6-months to 5-years in the UK completed questionnaires assessing their child's feeding problems and eating behaviours and parental feeding practices. RESULTS For children with Down syndrome, feeding problems were: significantly greater than for TD children; negatively associated with breast milk duration and appetite during exclusive milk feeding; and positively associated with drinking more slowly. For both groups, feeding problems were significantly correlated with more food avoidant eating behaviours. CONCLUSIONS This study provides new information about the relationships between feeding problems and eating behaviours in early development. Longitudinal research is needed to further investigate these relationships, so that effective support can be developed for families.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood overweight and obesity have become significant public health challenges worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate whether caregivers' feeding behaviour and children's eating behaviour were associated with the weight status of preschool children in China. METHODS A cross-sectional questionnaire was administered to 912 caregivers of preschool children from April to July 2016. Caregivers' feeding behaviours were assessed by the Chinese Preschooler's Caregiver Feeding Behaviour Scale. Children's eating behaviours were evaluated using the Chinese Preschooler's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire. After controlling for demographic characteristics, multiple linear regression and logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the relationship between caregivers' feeding behaviour, children's eating behaviour and children's body mass index (BMI). RESULTS The results showed that weight concerns on the part of caregivers (β = 0.53) and food responsiveness on the part of children (β = 0.93) were positively correlated with children's BMI, whereas caregivers' responsibility for feeding (β = -0.68) and children's external eating (β = -0.53) were negatively correlated with BMI. Among caregiver feeding behaviours, weight concerns [odds ratio (OR) =4.54, p < 0.001] and behaviour-restricted feeding (OR =0.29, p < 0.001) were positively correlated with children's BMI. A child's food responsiveness (OR =4.04, p < 0.001) was also positively correlated with his/her BMI, whereas the child's satiety responsiveness (OR =0.42, p < 0.001) and emotional eating habits (OR =0.56, p < 0.001) were negatively correlated with overweight/obesity status. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that children's eating behaviour and caregivers' feeding behaviour were associated with weight status among preschool children in China. Behaviour interventions on caregivers and their children may prevent or reduce weight problems in preschool children.

Abstract
Atypical eating behaviors displayed by children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) predispose them to unhealthy weight gain. We determined the factors associated with body weight status among 261 children with ASD (3-18 years) at nine autism intervention centers. Their mothers completed a self-administered questionnaire on sociodemographic background, parenting style, parental feeding practices, parenting stress, sleep habits, eating behaviors, and autism severity. Children with older age, non-full term gestational age, high maternal perceived weight, high maternal concern about child weight, and low pressure to eat were more likely to be overweight and obese. Obesity is a major concern among children with ASD. Healthy weight management programs for parents should incorporate appropriate feeding practices and a healthy perception of body weight.

Abstract
Children with neurodevelopmental disorders (ND) such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) have high levels of fussy eating. However, no school-based food interventions exist for children with ASD and ADHD. To investigate the effect of Taste Education, 81 children with ND (n = 33), and without (n = 48), aged 8-12 years, and their parents, participated in a 7-week food intervention. Children were matched on age, ND, and sex, and randomized into Immediate-intervention and Delayed-intervention groups. Parents completed the Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ), and a food-variety questionnaire. After adjusting for baseline measures, repeated-measures analysis-of-variance with time-points, and condition as factors (Immediate intervention and Delayed intervention) were used to examine changes in CEBQ-scores, with a robust linear mixed-model fitted. Changes in percentage of accepted foods were tested using a logistic-regression model adjusting for baseline acceptance. Results showed superior results for Intervention compared to waiting, on Food fussiness, but not Enjoyment of food, with stable effects through six-months follow-up. There were non-significant differences between children with and without ND. Results also showed increased odds of accepting vegetables by a factor of 1.6 (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.33-1.93, p < .001); nuts and seeds by a factor of 1.4 (95% CI: 1.27-1.6, p < .001), but no significant association for fruit (OR 1.12, 95% CI: 0.92-1.34, p = .244). Trends were similar for children regardless of ND-status. The Taste Education program, shows promise, as a simple, non-invasive way to decrease fussy eating and increase food variety in the long-term.

Abstract
The purpose of this scoping review was to identify the family and child quality of life variables that have been studied in relation to one another in children with Down syndrome, the frequency with which different relationships have been studied, and the extent to which family variables were the focus of the research aims. A literature search was conducted to find studies published between January 2007 and June 2018. The initial search yielded 2314 studies; of these, 43 were selected for a final review. Researchers most often addressed family resources and family problem-solving and coping concerning child personal development and physical well-being. Little attention to child emotional well-being was observed, with none considering family appraisal of child emotional well-being. The relationship between family variables and child QoL rarely was the primary focus of the study. Methodologically, most reviewed studies used cross-sectional designs, were conducted in North America and based on maternal report. From future research considering the issues found in this review, healthcare providers can obtain an in-depth understanding of relationships between children and family variables.

Abstract
Nutritional challenges and a lack of activity can lead to health problems across the lifespan for people with spina bifida. Children and adults with spina bifida are also at greater risk of being classified as overweight or obese compared to their peers without the condition. Therefore, early recognition of nutrition problems, weight management counseling, and timely referrals for evaluation and management of diet and activity can help those with spina bifida and their families achieve a healthy lifestyle. This article details the development of the Nutrition, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity Guidelines, which are part of the 2018 Spina Bifida Association's Fourth Edition of the Guidelines for the Care of People with Spina Bifida. It discusses the identification and management of poor nutrition and prevention of obesity for children, adolescents, and adults with spina bifida and highlights areas requiring further research.

Abstract
Background: Childhood overweight and obesity, in addition to weight stigma, can result in numerous physical and psychosocial conditions. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are at a higher risk of developing overweight/obesity than their typically developing peers, yet we know little about what matters to them with regards to weight and their bodies.Methods: Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with youth with ASD. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using a phenomenological approach within an interpretive paradigm.Results: Participants mostly showed little concern about their weight. Participants highly valued moving their bodies and reported feeling good about their bodies.Discussion: Findings suggest that children with ASD may be more engaged in healthcare discussions focusing on growth and health rather than size and weight. This approach can also reduce stigmatizing discussions.

Abstract
Globally, overweight and obesity (OW/OB) levels are high among children, with rates surpassing the adult population. With such high pediatric OW/OB rates, it is imperative that risk factors are identified and explored. Thus, Davison and Birch developed an adapted framework, based on Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, which identifies and categorizes the factors in a child's life that put them at risk for OW/OB. While a socioecological perspective has been a useful tool for examining risk factors in typically developing pediatric populations, this holistic approach has not yet been applied to populations of children with disabilities, who are at an even higher risk of OW/OB than their typically developing peers. This commentary, therefore, explores Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Framework as applied to OW/OB by Davison and Birch, and critically examines its application to children with disabilities.

Abstract
The prevalence of Down syndrome (DS) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is high in comparison to the global statistics. The aim of this study is to assess the physical status, feeding problems, parent-child feeding relationship and weight outcome in children and adolescents with DS in the UAE. In this cross-sectional study, 83 individuals aged between 2–19 years with DS were recruited from three humanitarian centres for differently abled in the Emirates of Sharjah and Dubai, UAE. Socio-demographic characteristics; height, weight, BMI and body composition; feeding problems (STEP-CHILD screening tool); and parent-child feeding relationship (child feeding questionnaire—CFQ) were assessed. Correlations and regression analyses were used to determine the relationships and the best predictor of weight outcome (BMI) in DS participants. The median age of the participants was 9 (8) years. Fifty-five (66.3%) males and twenty-eight (33.7%) females constituted a sex ratio of 1.96:1. Five (6.2%) participants were short for their age, and 20.6% were overweight/obese compared to the growth charts for DS population. Body composition of females showed significantly higher percent body fat than males (25.5 (14.3)% vs. 18.2 (4.0)%, p = 0.03; 29.9 (2.8)% vs. 16.3 (12.2)%, p = 0.006) in 5–8.99 years and 12–19.99 years, respectively. The most common feeding difficulties on STEP-CHILD tool were food selectivity (62.2%), continued eating in the presence of food (57.7%) and swallowing without sufficient chewing (50%). Median score of total-CFQ for the parent-child feeding behaviour was 3.2 (1.9); parental restriction 3.3 (1.0); pressure to eat 3.0 (0.8); concern about child weight 3.7 (2.3). Parent-child feeding relationship was significantly positively correlated with feeding problems, and body weight of the participants. The best predictor for BMI was the parental concern about child weight (OR: 1.4, p = 0.02). The findings can be valuable for the health care professionals, parents and caretakers of children and adolescents with DS in emphasizing the need for regular monitoring of their physical status, and feeding behaviours. In addition, it reinforces the role of parents in mindfully managing their child feeding relationship in promoting healthy eating behaviours and weight of their youth with DS.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between caregivers' feeding behaviors and children's eating behaviors among preschoolers in China. From April to July 2016, a cross-sectional survey was administered to 912 preschoolers' caregivers in China. The Chinese Preschooler's Caregiver Feeding Behavior Scale (CPCFBS) and Chinese Preschooler's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CPEBQ) were used to assess caregivers' feeding behaviors and children's eating behaviors, respectively. Pearson correlation and canonical correlation analysis (CCA) based on principal component analysis were performed to explore the relationships between them. Two interpretable canonical variables and structures were yielded through CCA. The first canonical variable could explain 35.1% and 29.0% of the total variance of the caregivers' feeding behaviors and the children's eating behaviors variable groups, respectively, with a canonical correlation coefficient of 0.659 (rU1,V1 = 0.659, P < 0.001). The second canonical variable could explain 17.6% and 14.9% of the total variance of the caregivers' feeding behaviors and the children's eating behaviors variable groups, respectively, with a canonical correlation coefficient of 0.309 (rU2,V2 = 0.309, P < 0.001). According to the canonical structure, higher performance behaviors of the caregiver, such as encouragement of healthy eating, responsibility for feeding, supervision of eating, behavior restricted feeding, content restricted feeding and lower weight concerns, were associated with reasonable behaviors of children, including lower emotional eating, food responsiveness, unhealthy eating habits and higher initiative eating. Our results demonstrated that caregivers' feeding behaviors were the major influencing factors of children's eating behaviors, and caregivers' encouragement of healthy eating, responsibility for feeding, supervision of eating, restricted feeding and lower weight concerns were associated with reasonable children's eating behaviors, especially low children's emotional eating, low food responsiveness, infrequent unhealthy eating habits, frequent initiative eating, infrequent satiety responsiveness and food fussiness behaviors.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Interventions that aim to alter child eating behaviors often focus on parents as a proximal influence. Yet, parents can be difficult to engage. Therefore, intervention recommendations are often not implemented as designed. The goal of this review is to highlight factors at multiple contextual levels that are important to consider when developing interventions to address child eating, due to their implications for overcoming parent engagement challenges. RECENT FINDINGS Intervention studies suggest that parents are often the key to successfully changing child eating behaviors, and many interventions focus on feeding. Factors such as child eating phenotypes, parent stress, family system dynamics, and sociodemographic constraints have also been identified as shaping food parenting. Challenges at multiple contextual levels can affect the likelihood of parent engagement. Addressing factors at the child-, parent-, family-, and broader social-contextual levels of influence is essential in order to promote best practices for parent-focused feeding interventions.
