Abstract
BACKGROUND Hamstring (HS) strength deficits and imbalances have been identified as risk factors for sustaining anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and muscular strains, with HS injuries being the most prevalent muscle injuries in soccer athletes. The aim of this study was to investigate HS eccentric strength before and after a soccer match in both male and female soccer athletes. HYPOTHESIS Soccer athletes have changes in eccentric HS strength after a soccer game. STUDY DESIGN Cohort observational study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level 3. METHODS HS eccentric strength (mean and absolute peak torque and total work) was measured in 64 healthy male and female competitive football athletes (14-25 years) with an automatic device during the execution of the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) test before and after a 90-minute soccer match. The anterior-knee laxity (AKL) was quantified with an arthrometer. RESULTS Mean and absolute eccentric HS peak torque decreased by 24.5 N.m (-12.34%; P < 0.01) and 21.9 N.m (-10.08%; P < 0.01) in female athletes, whereas their male peers improved by 19.9 N.m (+9.01%; P = 0.01) and by 20.9 N.m (+8.51%; P = 0.02), respectively. HS total work in female athletes decreased by 831.1 J (P < 0.01) compared with the male athlete reduction of 235.3 J. Both the pre- versus postmatch intersex mean and absolute eccentric HS peak torque changes were significant (P < 0.01), as were the changes in HS total work (P < 0.01). The pre- versus postmatch AKL difference and the dominant versus nondominant limb comparison of the strength parameters were not significantly different. Younger female athletes (14-19 years old) presented a greater decrease in mean and absolute peak HS eccentric strength compared with those in older female athletes and men. CONCLUSION HS eccentric strength and work differ based on athlete sex, as measured by the NHE test. Mean peak, absolute peak, and total work showed greater reductions in female athletes than those in their male peers. The subgroup of 14- to 19-year-old female athletes experienced the highest reduction in strength parameters.

Abstract
Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a frequent injury among athletes, particularly women. Various techniques have shown effectiveness, but their impact on laxity and clinical outcomes varies. This study aims to compare the rupture rates of patellar tendon (PT) reconstruction versus hamstring reconstruction (HR) combined with anterolateral ligament reconstruction (ALLR) in young women. The secondary objectives include comparing functional ACL-RSI and subjective IKDC scores, as well as the Tegner scale, between these two groups. The hypothesis is that adding ALLR to HR will result in rupture rates and functional scores similar to those of PT reconstruction. Methods: Between 2015 and 2019, 96 patients were treated at two facilities, with 70 having an average follow-up of 44 ± 14.5 months: 35 underwent PT reconstruction, and 35 had HR combined with ALLR. Patients were re-evaluated remotely after at least 2 years using a standardised questionnaire and assessing subjective IKDC, ACL-RSI, and Tegner scores. Results: Rupture rates were 5.7% in both groups. The mean subjective IKDC score was 81% for the HR + ALLR group versus 80.8% for the PT group (p = 0.09). The mean ACL-RSI score was 66% for HR + ALLR versus 68% for PT (p = 0.78). The HR + ALLR group lost an average of 0.4 points on the Tegner scale postoperatively, while the PT group lost an average of 0.77 points (p = 0.09). Conclusions: Hamstring surgery combined with anterolateral surgery provides subjective results, as assessed by patients using subjective scales and questionnaires, that are as good as those obtained with PT surgery in young women. Notwithstanding, the results are not corroborated by clinical or radiological examination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have attempted to determine prognostic factors for predicting the occurrence of noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. However, studies on risk factors for noncontact ACL injuries in Asian female soccer players are limited. PURPOSE To identify intrinsic risk factors for noncontact ACL injuries among young female Asian soccer players. STUDY DESIGN Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. METHODS This study evaluated 145 female Japanese soccer players for potential risk factors for noncontact ACL injury during the preseason medical assessment. In total, 25 variables were examined-including anthropometric data, joint range of motion, muscle flexibility, muscle strength, and balance measurements. Participants were monitored throughout a single season for noncontact ACL injuries diagnosed by physicians. RESULTS Noncontact ACL injuries occurred in 13 knees of 13 players (9%). Lower hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio (0.44 ± 0.07 vs 0.50 ± 0.10; P = .04), greater knee extension muscle strength (3.2 ± 0.5 vs 2.7 ± 0.5 N·m/kg; P < .01), and longer playing experience (10.8 ± 3 vs 8.1 ± 4.2 years; P = .02) were significantly associated with new-onset noncontact ACL injuries in young female soccer players. No statistically significant between-group differences were found for any other variables. CONCLUSION New-onset noncontact ACL injury in young female soccer players was significantly associated with lower hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio, greater knee extension muscle strength, and longer soccer experience. These findings will help develop strategies for preventing noncontact ACL injuries among female soccer players.

Abstract
The increased participation of females in sports has been accompanied by an increase in the rate of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The literature has identified risk factors for non-contact ACL injuries in female athletes including anatomic, hormonal, biomechanical, neuromuscular, and environmental factors. This review will provide an overview of sex-specific considerations when managing female athletes with ACL injuries. A discussion of sex-specific surgical and rehabilitative treatment strategies with the goal of optimizing return to sport after ACL reconstruction will be emphasized.

Abstract
In athletes, a mismatch between caloric intake and energy expended in exercise can eventually lead to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), where the athlete suffers from physiological derangements and decreased sport performance. The prevalence of REDs is higher in females than males. Females are already at a higher risk of knee injuries, which has been attributed to a multitude of factors such as hormonal influences, differences in musculoskeletal anatomy and neuromuscular control compared to males. The literature demonstrates an even higher risk of knee injuries in female athletes with symptoms of REDs. We propose the various factors that influence this risk. A reduction in anabolic hormones can affect muscle development and tendon repair. A relationship between poor neuromuscular control and knee injury has been established, and this can be further worsened in patients with menstrual dysfunction. Chronic deficiency in nutrients such as collagen and vitamin D can result in poorer recovery from microtrauma in tendons and ligaments. All these factors may contribute to increasing the risk of knee injuries, which may include anterior cruciate ligament tears, patella tendinopathy and patellofemoral pain syndrome. This review aims to educate sports clinicians to have a high index of suspicion when treating knee injuries in females; to screen and then manage for REDs if present, for holistic patient care.

Abstract
Background Weightlifting exposes athletes to significant loads, potentially placing the knee joint in an abnormal mechanical environment and leading to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Once an ACL injury occurs, it can affect athletes' competitive ability to varying degrees and even prematurely end their career. Understanding the biomechanical mechanisms of ACL injuries in weightlifters helps in comprehensively understanding the stress patterns and degrees on ACL during human movement, and identifying potential injury-causing factors, thereby enabling the implementation of appropriate preventive measures to reduce the occurrence of injuries. This study aimed to explore the biomechanical mechanisms of ACL injuries during the jerk dip phase of clean and jerk in weightlifters, providing a theoretical basis for the prevention of ACL injuries in weightlifting sports. Methods This study utilized the German SIMI Motion 10.2 movement analysis system and the AnyBody simulation system to analyze the kinematic and dynamic parameters of a 109 kg + class weightlifter (height: 191 cm, age: 22 years, weight: 148 kg, athletic level: elite) performing a 205 kg clean and jerk (non-injured) and a 210 kg clean and jerk (ACL injury occurred). The differences in kinematic and dynamic indicators of lower limb joints under injured and non-injured jerk dip conditions were investigated. Results Knee joint torque during non-injured clean and jerk was consistently positive (i.e., external rotation) but turned from positive to negative (i.e., from external rotation to internal rotation) during injured clean and jerk and reached a maximum internal rotation torque of 21.34 Nm at the moment of injury. At every moment, the muscle activation and simulated muscle force of the quadriceps and gastrocnemius during the injured clean and jerk were higher than those during the non-injured clean and jerk. By contrast, the muscle activation and simulated muscle force of the semitendinosus, semimembranosus, biceps femoris, and soleus during non-injured clean and jerk were higher than those during injured clean and jerk. The knee joint internal rotation angle during injured clean and jerk first increased and then declined, reaching a peak at 46.93° at the moment of injury, whereas it gradually increased during non-injured clean and jerk. The proximal tibia on the left side during the injured clean and jerk moved forward faster by 0.76 m/s compared with that during the non-injured clean and jerk. Conclusions The small muscle activation and simulated muscle force of the hamstring and soleus could not resist timely and effectively the large muscle activation and simulated muscle force of the quadriceps (especially the medial quad) and gastrocnemius. As such, the force applied to the ACL could exceed its ultimate load-bearing capacity. Kinematic indicators in the athlete's injured lift demonstrated certain disparities from those in their non-injured lift. Knee internal rotation and tibial anterior translation during the jerk dip phase of weightlifting might be the kinematic characteristics of ACL injuries.

Abstract
Background Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries often occur when an athlete experiences an unexpected disruption, or perturbation, during sports. ACL injury rates may also be influenced by the menstrual cycle. Purpose To determine whether training adaptations to knee control and muscle activity during a perturbed single-leg squatting (SLS) task depend on menstrual cycle phase in female athletes. Study Design Controlled laboratory study. Methods A total of 21 healthy female collegiate athletes (current or former [<3 years]) who competed in 9 different sports performed an SLS task in which they attempted to match their knee position (user signal) to a target signal. The protocol consisted of a 9-condition pretest, 5 sets of 3 training trials, and a 9-condition posttest. One perturbation was delivered in each condition by altering the resistance of the device. Sagittal knee control (absolute error between the target signal and user signal) was assessed using a potentiometer. Muscle activity during perturbed squat cycles was normalized to maximal activation and to corresponding muscle activity during unperturbed squat cycles (%unperturbed) within the same test condition. Athletes performed the protocol during a distinct menstrual cycle phase (early follicular [EF], late follicular [LF], midluteal [ML]). Two-way mixed analysis of variance was used to determine the effects of the menstrual cycle and training on knee control and muscle activity during task performance. Venous blood was collected for hormonal analysis, and a series of health questionnaires and anthropometric measures were also assessed to determine differences among the menstrual cycle groups. Results After training, athletes demonstrated better knee control during the perturbed squat cycles (lower absolute error, P < .001) and greater soleus feedback responses to the perturbation (%unperturbed, P = .035). Better knee control was demonstrated in the ML phase versus the EF phase during unperturbed and perturbed squat cycles (P < .039 for both). Quadriceps activation was greater in the ML phase compared with the EF and LF phases, both immediately before and after the perturbation (P < .001 for all). Conclusion Athletes learned to improve knee control during the perturbed performance regardless of menstrual cycle phase. The best knee control and greatest quadriceps activation during the perturbed squatting task was found in the ML phase. Clinical Relevance These findings may correspond to a lower incidence of ACL injury in the luteal phase and alterations in exercise performance across the menstrual cycle.

Abstract
PURPOSE Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) in children is indicated to reduce recurrent knee instability and further damage to the joint. Postoperative modified gait pattern was reported in the adult population after ACLR. The aim of this study was to analyse gait abnormalities, and especially knee and ankle adaptations during gait in children after ACLR. METHODS A prospective study was performed between 2018 and 2022 on 50 children, aged nine to 15 years with unilateral ACL deficiency. Changes in gait pattern were evaluated by gait analysis before surgery and at the latest follow-up of 24 months. Kinematic data of ACL-deficient limb were compared to contralateral limb and to those of a matched control group of healthy children. RESULTS Compared to control group, knee flexion was decreased for both ACL-deficient and contralateral knee before surgery. Decreased knee flexion during gait cycle persisted at latest follow-up. Ankle kinematics showed decreased dorsal flexion for both ACL-deficient and contralateral limb before surgery. At latest follow-up, ankle kinematics were modified for ACL-reconstructed limbs only at initial contact and showed no significant difference for contralateral limb compared to the control group. CONCLUSION In children with ACL injury, abnormal gait patterns persist two years after ligament reconstruction, in spite of extensive rehabilitation and no clinical complaints. These findings might guide neuromuscular training to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the rerupture rate.

Abstract
During the ascent phase of a maximal barbell back squat after an initial acceleration, a deceleration region occurs as the result of different biomechanical factors. This is known as the sticking region. However, whether this region is similar in the last repetition of different repetition maximums and if sex has an impact on biomechanics of this region are not known. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of sex (men/women) and repetition maximum (1-, 3-, 6-, and 10RM) on kinematics and surface electromyography around the sticking region. Twenty-six resistance-trained individuals comprising 13 men (body mass: 82.2 ± 8.7; age: 23.6 ± 1.9; height: 181.1 ± 6.5) and 13 women (body mass: 63.6 ± 6.6; age: 23.9 ± 4.5; height: 166.0 ± 4.5) participated in the study. The main findings were that women, in comparison to men, displayed larger trunk lean and lower hip extension angles in the sticking region, possibly due to different hip/knee extensor strength ratios. Moreover, an inverse relationship was discovered between repetition range and timing from V0 to Vmax2, in which lower repetition ranges (1- and 3RM) were shorter in Vmax2 compared to higher ranges (6- and 10RM). It was concluded that this occurrence is due to more moments of inertia in lower repetition ranges. Our findings suggest that both sex and repetition range might induce different requirements during the squat ascent.

Abstract
After an ACL injury, rehabilitation consists of multiple phases, and progress between these phases is guided by subjective visual assessments of activities such as running, hopping, jump landing, etc. Estimation of objective kinetic measures like knee joint moments and GRF during assessment can help physiotherapists gain insights on knee loading and tailor rehabilitation protocols. Conventional methods deployed to estimate kinetics require complex, expensive systems and are limited to laboratory settings. Alternatively, multiple algorithms have been proposed in the literature to estimate kinetics from kinematics measured using only IMUs. However, the knowledge about their accuracy and generalizability for patient populations is still limited. Therefore, this article aims to identify the available algorithms for the estimation of kinetic parameters using kinematics measured only from IMUs and to evaluate their applicability in ACL rehabilitation through a comprehensive systematic review. The papers identified through the search were categorized based on the modelling techniques and kinetic parameters of interest, and subsequently compared based on the accuracies achieved and applicability for ACL patients during rehabilitation. IMUs have exhibited potential in estimating kinetic parameters with good accuracy, particularly for sagittal movements in healthy cohorts. However, several shortcomings were identified and future directions for improvement have been proposed, including extension of proposed algorithms to accommodate multiplanar movements and validation of the proposed techniques in diverse patient populations and in particular the ACL population.

Abstract
Background Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a challenging clinical problem affecting adults, adolescents, and physically active populations. PFPS impacts the patient's trunk kinematics in the frontal plane. Previous studies have found gender-based biomechanical differences in patients with PFPS; however, sagittal trunk kinematics during mini-squats and lumbar proprioception in PFPS have not been studied previously. Objectives To investigate sagittal trunk excursion (It is defined as the sagittal trunk flexion angle from the start to the end of the mini squat) during mini-squats as well as lumbar repositioning error between individuals with and without PFPS, and determine gender differences in the outcome variables. Methods A sample of 56 participants aged 18-25 years was enrolled; 30 with PFPS (13 males, 17 females) and 26 asymptomatic controls (11 males, 15 females). The sagittal trunk excursion during mini-squats was examined by two-dimensional (2D) photographic analysis using Surgimap software. Active lumbar flexion repositioning error was assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer. Results For sagittal trunk excursion, no significant main effect of group was observed (p = 0 . 136 ). On the other hand, the main effect was significant for gender (p = 0 . 005 ), as was the interaction effect. Compared to the control group, the PFPS group showed significantly (p = 0 . 01 ) lower sagittal trunk excursion in females than in males during mini-squats. For active lumbar flexion repositioning error, no evidence was found for significant main or interaction effects (p > 0 . 05 ). Conclusion Females with PFPS exhibit a more erect sagittal trunk posture than males during mini-squats. Trunk posture should be considered during weight-bearing activities in PFPS, and gender-specific assessment protocols should be developed.

Abstract
Neuromuscular alterations are reported in patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) and conservative treatment (copers with ACL deficiency, ACL-C). However, it is unclear whether sex influences neuromuscular control. The objective was to investigate differences in neuromuscular control regarding sex and treatment type one year after ACL rupture in comparison to a group with an intact ACL (ACL-I). Electromyography of vastus medialis (VM) and lateralis, biceps femoris (BF) and semitendinosus (ST) was recorded in ACL-R (N = 38), ACL-C (N = 26), and ACL-I (N = 38) during stair descent and reflex activity by anterior tibial translation while standing. The movements of stair descent were divided into pre-activity, weight-acceptance and push-off phases, reflex activity in pre-activation, short, medium (MLR), and long latency responses (LLR). Normalized root mean squares for each muscle of involved and matched control limb per phase were calculated and analyzed with two-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). During stair descent, neuromuscular differences of BF were significant during push-off only (p = 0.001). Males of ACL-R and ACL-C had higher BF activity compared to ACL-I (p = 0.009, 0.007 respectively). During reflex activity, VM and BF were significantly different between treatment groups for pre-activation (p = 0.013, 0.035 respectively). VM pre-activation of females was higher in ACL-R compared to ACL-C (p = 0.018), and lower in ACL-C compared to ACL-I (p = 0.034). Males of ACL-R showed higher VM and less BF pre-activation (p = 0.025, p = 0.003 respectively) compared to ACL-I. Males of ACL-C had less BF pre-activation compared to ACL-I (p = 0.019). During MLR, intra-group differences in ST were found for treatment (p = 0.011) and females of ACL-R compared to ACL-I (p = 0.015). During LLR, overall intra-group differences in VM were present for treatment (p = 0.034) and in females (ACL-R versus ACL-C (p = 0.015), ACL-I (p = 0.049), respectively). One year after an ACL rupture, neuromuscular alterations persist regardless of treatment and sex. Standard rehabilitation protocols may not be able to restore neuromuscular control. Future research should include long-term follow up and focus on exercises targeting neuromuscular function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A bony Bankart lesion directly affects the stability of the shoulder by reducing the glenoid joint-contact area. The aim of this study was to report on the epidemiological data relating to bony Bankart lesions in Sweden using the Swedish fracture register. The purpose is to evaluate age and sex distribution in the population with bony Bankart lesions, its impact on treatment strategy and further to analyse patient-reported outcomes. METHODS This was an epidemiological descriptive study. The inclusion criteria were all patients with a unilateral bony Bankart lesion registered between April 2012 and April 2019. The patients' specific data (age, sex, type and time of injury, treatment option and patient-reported outcomes) were extracted from the Swedish fracture register database. RESULTS A total of 790 unilateral bony Bankart fractures were identified. The majority of the patients were male (58.7%). The median age for all patients at the time of injury was 57 years. Females had a higher median age of 66 years, compared with males, 51 years. Most of the bony Bankart lesions, 662 (91.8%), were registered as a low-energy trauma. More than two-thirds of all treatment registered cases, 509/734 patients (69.3%), were treated non-surgically, 225 (30.7%) were treated surgically, while, in 17 patients (7.5% of all surgically treated patients), the treatment was changed from non-surgical to surgical due to recurrent instability. Surgical treatment was chosen for 149 (35%) of the males and for 76 (25%) of the females. Patient quality of life decreased slightly in both surgically and non-surgically treated groups 1 year after bony Bankart injury. CONCLUSION This national register-based study provides detailed information on the epidemiology, choice of treatment and patient-reported outcomes in a large cohort of bony Bankart lesions. Most bony Bankart lesions affected males between 40 and 75 years after low-energy falls and non-surgical treatment dominated.

Abstract
Frontal and sagittal plane landing biomechanics differ between sexes but reported values don't account for simultaneous segment or joint motion necessary for a coordinated landing. Frontal and sagittal plane coordination patterns, angles, and moments were compared between 28 males and 28 females throughout the landing phase of a drop vertical jump. Females landed with less isolated thigh abduction (p = 0.018), more in-phase motion (p < 0.001), and more isolated shank adduction (p = 0.028) between the thigh and shank in the frontal plane compared with males. Females landed with less in-phase (p = 0.012) and more anti-phase motion (p = 0.019) between the thigh and shank in the sagittal plane compared with males. Females landed with less isolated knee flexion (p = 0.001) and more anti-phase motion (p < 0.001) between the sagittal and frontal plane knee coupling compared with males. Waveform and discrete metric analyses revealed females land with less thigh abduction from 20 % to 100 % and more shank abduction from 0 to 100 % of landing, smaller knee adduction at initial contact (p = 0.002), greater peak knee abduction angles (p = 0.015), smaller knee flexion angles at initial contact (p = 0.035) and peak (p = 0.034), greater peak knee abduction moments (p = 0.024), greater knee abduction angles from 0 to 13 % and 19 to 30 %, greater knee abduction moments from 19 to 25 %, and smaller knee flexion moments from 3 to 5 % of landing compared with males. Females utilize greater frontal plane motion compared with males, which may be due to different inter-segmental joint coordination and smaller sagittal plane angles. Larger knee abduction angles and greater knee adduction motion in females are due to aberrant shank abduction rather than thigh adduction.

Abstract
To analyze the impact of balance, lower-limb explosive strength and anthropometric variables on the result of the hop test in young elite female basketball athletes. Ninety young elite female basketball athletes (13-17 years), without current or recent lower-limb injury, were assessed in the off-season period of July 2021. Single leg hop test, countermovement jump, Y balance test and anthropometric outcomes were assessed. A correlation study and a regression model were performed to investigate the influence of such outcomes and the value of their participation on the hop test results. It was found a low-to-moderate correlation effect size for both countermovement jump (distance and power flight) and Y balance test values (except interlimb outcomes) with the single leg hop test results. Anthropometric outcomes did not show significant correlation (p > 0.05). Regression model revealed that for right hop test, countermovement jump values exhibited an adjusted determination coefficient of 0.408, (β = 0.249, p = 0.013), For left hop test, again the countermovement jump values (β = 0.229, p = 0.025), and left Y balance test values (β = 0.331, p = 0.011) jointly obtained an adjusted determination coefficient of 0.263 significant predictive value for countermovement jump outcomes in both right (β = 0.249, p = 0.013; β = 0.301; p = 0.031) and left leg (β = 0.229, p = 0.025; β = 0.365, p = 0.040), as well as certain Y balance outcomes values. Explosive strength, and dynamic balance although to a lesser extent, appear to be the most relevant physical-functional factors influencing the single leg hop test results among young elite female basketball athletes. These findings may a serve as a basis to implement targeted interventions, such as plyometric and balance training, for an enhancement on functional rehabilitation and reducing the risk of injury related to the hop test results.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most common injuries of the knee. Women have a higher injury rate for ACL ruptures than men. Various indicators for this sex-specific difference are controversially discussed. AIM A systematic review of the literature that compares surface electromyography (EMG) values of adult female and male subjects to find out if there is a difference in neuromuscular activation of the knee stabilizing muscles. METHODS This systematic review has been guided and informed by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies which examined sex-specific differences with surface EMG measurements (integral, root mean squares, mean values, analysis of time and amplitude) of the knee stabilizing muscles were retrieved via searches from the databases PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, CENTRAL and SPORTDiscus. The risk of bias of included studies was assessed with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) study quality assessment tool. A synthesis of results was performed for relevant outcomes. RESULTS Fifteen studies with 462 healthy participants, 233 women (mean age 21.9 (± 2.29) years) and 299 men (mean age 22.6 (± 2.43) years), were included in the systematic review. The methodological quality of the studies was mostly rated "fair" (40%). A significantly higher activity of the muscles vastus lateralis and vastus medialis was found in females, in three studies. Two studies found significantly lower neuromuscular activity in the muscles biceps femoris and semitendinosus in females. All other included studies found no significant differences or reported even contradicting results. CONCLUSION The controversial findings do not allow for a concluding answer to the question of a sex-specific neuromuscular activation. Further research with higher statistical power and a more homogeneous methodical procedure (tasks and data normalisation) of the included studies may provide insight into possibly existing sex-specific differences in neuromuscular activation. This systematic review could help to improve the methodical design of future studies to get a more valid conclusion of the issue. TRIAL REGISTRATION CRD42020189504.

Background
Sports injuries are strongly associated with the impact loading at landing. The abilities to produce force and adjust timing are simultaneously required to absorb impact loading.
Aims
Hence, we aimed to examine the hypothesis that the ability to produce an explosive force at the right timing is related to the ability to absorb the impact loading at landing.
Methods
Twenty-nine healthy young men volunteered to participate in the study. We proposed a new test to measure the rate of force development (RFD) in accordance with the countdown signal. To evaluate the ability to produce explosive force at the right time, we measured the rate of change between the RFD at the standard start signal and the RFD at the countdown signal. Furthermore, to evaluate the ability to land from a jump, we measured the loading rate at single-leg drop landing (20 cm).
Results
We divided the participants into two groups based on the timing effect: the positive group (participants with increased RFD at the countdown signal, n = 11) and the negative group (participants with decreased RFD at the countdown signal, n = 18). The loading rate was significantly greater (P < .01) in the negative group (47.4 ± 11.2 body weight (BW)/s) than in the positive group (34.7 ± 7.1 BW/s).
Conclusions
Participants with increased RFD at the countdown signal had a lower loading rate at landing. Our results suggest that the ability to produce a timely explosive force may be a determinant of safe landing ability.

Abstract
The present study aimed to examine the changes that occurred in vertical jump and isokinetic dynamometer (ISK) performances at the beginning of a preparatory period (PRE) and at the start of the competitive period (POST). Sixteen U-17 elite female volleyball players, from a national level (15.34 ± 1.19 years; 66.35 ± 7.95 kg; 169.22 ± 24.79 cm), performed bilateral squat jump (SJ), bilateral and unilateral countermovement jump (CMJ) and unilateral ISK tests for knee flexors (Fl) and extensors (Ex) both at 60°/s and at 300°/s. Peak torque (PT) and the hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) ratio were assessed by concentric actions. Asymmetries were calculated by the percentage differences between dominant (DOM) and nondominant legs (NDOM). The paired Student's t-test was used for comparisons at a level of significance of 5%. The effect size was also calculated. A significant increase was found for both SJ (15%; p = 0.004; ES = 0.82) and CMJ (12%; p = 0.017; ES = 0.62). The PT of NDOM flexors at 60°/s was significantly lower than DOM both at PRE (4.6%; p = 0.048; ES = -0.22) and POST (6.3%; p = 0.037; ES = -0.33). The NDOM extensors at 60°/s had a significantly lower PT than DOM at POST (7.0%; p = 0.048; ES = -0.23). Both DOM and NDOM flexors at 60°/s had a PT enhancement at POST related to PRE (6.7%; p = 0.031; ES = 0.51 and 5.6%; p = 0.037; ES = 0.48, respectively). The PT of NDOM extensors at 300°/s increased at POST in comparison to PRE (7.9%; p = 0.038; ES = 0.27). The NDOM at 300°/s had a H:Q ratio higher than DOM both in PRE and POST (8.6%; p = 0.041; ES = 0.37 and 11.6%; p = 0.013; ES = 0.71, respectively), and the highest H:Q ratios were lower than the reference values (<80%). The asymmetry of the unilateral CMJ was higher at POST than at PRE (102%; p = 0.03; ES = 0.81). The PT for the flexors at 300°/s and the H:Q ratio at POST exceeded 10%. In conclusion, a training program of 15 weeks increased the neuromuscular performance of young volleyball athletes, but many H:Q ratios and asymmetries remained out of the normal recommendation. Volleyball professionals should carefully apply an adequate training program to enhance physical fitness performance without increasing the risk of lower limb injuries concurrently.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Past research indicated that scapular malposition is related to the glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD). However, there is no research examining the effect of throwing-related pain on this relationship. This study investigated the relationship between scapular position and range of motion (ROM) and compared the difference in this relationship between with and without throwing-related pain. METHODS Forty male baseball players in high school were recruited for this study. The existence and degree of throwing-related pain were obtained from a questionnaire. Participants were divided into 2 groups according to the presence or absence of the pain. Glenohumeral internal and external rotation ROM (abduction internal rotation angle and abduction external rotation angle [ABER], respectively) were measured using a digital inclinometer. The pectoralis minor muscle length was measured using a vernier caliper and scapula index, which indicated the scapular position, measured using a measuring tape. All these measurements were taken on both dominant and nondominant sides. The GIRD and total motion arc (TMA) deficit were calculated from the ROM measurements. Groups were compared using a mixed-model analysis of variance. RESULTS There was a significant interaction between group and ABER dominance. Other variables were not seen as the interaction effect. There was a significant positive correlation between the scapula index and TMA (r = 0.47, P = .02) and a negative correlation between the scapula index and GIRD (r = -0.65, P < .01) in the dominant side of the pain group. In addition, in the nondominant side of the pain group, the scapula index and ABER were significantly correlated (r = 0.43, P = .04). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study indicate that the scapular position is associated with the glenohumeral ROM in high school baseball players. In addition, this study demonstrated that the scapular internally rotated position was correlated with the GIRD and TMA deficit in high school baseball players who had throwing-related pain. On the other hand, the scapular externally rotated position was correlated with increased ABER, mainly in the pain-free baseball players or on the nondominant side. These results indicated that the scapular position might affect the glenohumeral rotational ROM in high school baseball players.

Abstract
Introduction Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in military personnel and civilians can be a devastating injury. A service member is 10 times more likely to suffer an ACL injury than their civilian counterparts, and despite successful surgical stabilization, 4%-35% will develop arthrofibrosis, over 50% will not return to full active duty, and up to 50% will develop post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) within 15 years. Equally concerning, woman are 2 to 8 times more likely to experience ACL injuries than men, which represents a major knowledge gap. Materials and Methods A comprehensive literature search was performed in December 2021 using structured search terms related to prevalence, risk factors, disease progression, and treatment of ACL injury and reconstruction. The literature search was conducted independently by two researchers using PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases, with inclusion of articles with military, civilian, and sex relevance, and exclusion of most papers with a publication date greater than 10 years. The resources used for the review reflect the most current data, knowledge, and recommendations associated with research and clinical findings from reliable international sources. Results Currently, there is no effective system-based drug therapy that creates a “permissive environment” to reduce synovial and cartilage stress after ACL injury and reconstruction and prevent secondary complications. We argue that progress in this area has been hampered by researchers and clinicians failing to recognize that (1) an ACL injury is a system’s failure that affects the whole joint, (2) the early molecular events define and perpetuate different injury phenotypes, (3) male and female responses may be different and have a molecular basis, (4) the female phenotype continues to be under-represented in basic and clinical research, and (5) the variable outcomes may be perpetuated by the trauma of surgery itself. The early molecular events after ACL injury are characterized by an overexpression of joint inflammation, immune dysfunction, and trauma-induced synovial stress. We are developing an upstream adenosine, lidocaine, and magnesium therapy to blunt these early molecular events and expedite healing with less arthrofibrosis and early PTOA complications. Conclusions ACL injuries continue to be a major concern among military personnel and civilians and represent a significant loss in command readiness and quality of life. The lack of predictability in outcomes after ACL repair or reconstruction underscores the need for new joint protection therapies. The male–female disparity requires urgent investigation.

Neuromuscular Impairment of Knee Stabilizer Muscles in a COVID-19 Cluster of Female Volleyball Players: Which Role for Rehabilitation in the Post-COVID-19 Return-to-Play? APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
COVID-19 athletes reported persistent and residual symptoms many weeks after initial infection, including cough, fatigue, and neuromuscular disorders. Poor neuromuscular control may cause inefficient movement strategies increasing anterior cruciate ligament load. This is particularly relevant in female athletes, who show a 3-time higher risk than male counterparts. Aim is to evaluate the impairment in thigh muscles activation, body composition, and physical performance after COVID-19 in volleyball athletes. We recruited a cohort of female professional players from the same team. We assessed the pre-activation time of Rectus Femoris (RF), Vastus Medialis (VM), Medial Hamstring (MH), and Lateral Hamstring (LH) before (T0) and after (T1) COVID-19 infection, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and jump tests. We included 12 athletes with COVID-19 infection diagnosis in January 2021. At T1 we found a significant (p < 0.05) delay (ms) of the activation time of RF (426 ± 188 vs. 152 ± 106); VM (363 ± 192 vs. 140 ± 96); BF (229 ± 60 vs. 150 ± 63); MH (231 ± 88 vs. 203 ± 89), and a significant reduction of body composition at BIA. The neuromotor imbalance of the knee stabilizer muscle in female athletes after COVID-19 infection determines a deficit of knee stabilization. Physicians should consider neuromuscular and metabolic sequelae to identify athletes at higher risk of injury and set up specific neuromuscular rehabilitation protocols.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this narrative review, we highlight sex-specific anatomic and biomechanical features of the hip region in female athletes, as well as the potential impact of these characteristics on observed disparities in both intra-articular and extra-articular injury patterns between female and male athletes. It is our goal to broaden the scope of knowledge related to hip pathology in active female athletes among sports medicine providers with the hope of better optimizing sport participation and performance in female athletes. DATA SOURCES A literature review was conducted using PubMed database and Google Scholar search engine. Search terms included sport, female, athlete, sex differences, injury, hip, and all diagnoses discussed in this review. Cross-reference of these articles identified additional resources. MAIN RESULTS Sex-specific differences in both static design and dynamic function contribute to disparities in hip injury patterns between female and male athletes. Intra-articular injuries, including labral and ligamentum teres pathology, as well as extra-articular injuries, including iliopsoas tendon dysfunction, gluteal and proximal hamstring tendinopathy, ischiofemoral impingement, bone stress injuries, and certain nerve entrapment syndromes, seem to affect female athletes more commonly than male counterparts. CONCLUSIONS Given unique anatomic and functional considerations, the growing population of female athletes worldwide warrants specialized care and consideration. Potential predisposition to specific hip injuries should be taken into consideration during diagnostic evaluation of hip pain in the female athlete.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To present a new knee isokinetic assessment procedure linked to noncontact knee injury mechanisms and examine correlations between variables relevant to noncontact knee injury prevention screening (peak torque [PT, Nm], time-to-peak torque [TTPT, ms], angle-of-peak torque [APT, °], mean PT [MPT, Nm]). DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Sports medicine laboratory. PARTICIPANTS Thirty-four agility-sport athletes (male/female n = 18/16, age 24.1 ± 3.5yr, height 171.8 ± 9.6 cm, mass 70.6 ± 12 kg). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Pearson's/Spearman's correlation (r/rs), coefficient of determination (r2/rs2). RESULTS Most correlations were statistically non-significant or statistically-significant with only weak-to-moderate coefficients. For both knee extension and flexion, PT and MPT were significantly and strongly correlated (r = 0.99, r2 = 0.98, p = 0.001). Graphical analyses revealed two datapoint clusters for knee flexion TTPT and APT. One cluster indicated some participants could generate knee flexor PT rapidly (<150 ms) at low knee flexion angles (<45°) and the other cluster indicated that other participants could not (>200 ms, >50°). CONCLUSIONS In this study, most isokinetic variables represented distinct knee neuromuscular characteristics. For both knee extension and flexion, only PT or MPT need be used to represent isokinetic maximal strength. Knee flexion TTPT and APT may have utility in noncontact knee injury prevention screening with amateur adult agility-sport athletes.

Abstract
Background: Differences in postoperative recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) between men and women have been demonstrated in the adult population. Sex-based differences have been incompletely investigated in adolescents, which represent the subpopulation most affected by ACL injury. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to compare the 6-month postoperative functional recovery after ACLR between adolescent boys and girls. It was hypothesized that significant differences in postoperative strength, dynamic balance, and functional hop test performance would be seen between the sexes. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Included in this study were athletes aged 12 to 19 years with closed or closing growth plates who underwent ACLR with hamstring autograft between May 2014 and May 2018 at a single institution. All athletes had undergone strength and functional testing between 5 and 8 months postoperatively. Exclusion criteria were previous knee surgery (contralateral or ipsilateral knee), concomitant injury/surgery other than meniscal tear/repair, allograft supplementation, and incomplete medical records. The limb symmetry index (LSI) for strength (measured with handheld dynamometer), as well as dynamic Y-balance and functional hop test performance, was compared between groups. To account for differences in physical characteristics between the sexes, 1-way between-group multivariate analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data. Results: Overall, 543 patients (211 boys, 332 girls) were included. There was no significant difference in age, body mass index, incidence of concomitant meniscal pathology, use of regional anesthesia, or time to functional testing between cohorts. Female athletes demonstrated a statistically significantly greater deficit in quadriceps strength LSI compared with male athletes (boys, +3.4%; girls, –2.3%; P = .011). Both male and female athletes demonstrated 33% hamstring strength deficits, with no statistically significant sex-based differences in dynamic balance or functional hop testing. Conclusion: Female athletes demonstrated greater quadriceps strength deficits than male athletes at 6 months after ACLR with hamstring autograft. Severe hamstring strength deficits persisted in both male and female patients at this time point. The correlation of such deficits to risk of ACL retear warrants continued study in the adolescent population and may support a delay in return to sports, which has been suggested in the more recent literature.

Abstract
The stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) assists in effective force attenuation upon landing and augments force generation at take-off during a drop vertical jump (DVJ). General performance outcomes such as jump height or peak measures have been used to assess SSC function in youth populations; however, these discrete metrics fail to provide insight into temporal jump-landing characteristics. This study assessed DVJ force-time profiles in 1013 middle and high-school female athletes (n = 279 prepubertal, n = 401 pubertal, and n = 333 postpubertal). Maturity status was determined using the Pubertal Maturation Observation Scale. Ground reaction force data were analyzed to extract a range of variables to characterize force-time profiles. SSC function was categorized as poor, moderate, or good dependent on the presence of an impact peak and spring-like behavior. No differences in jump height or ground contact time were observed between maturity groups (p > 0.05). Significant differences in absolute peak landing and take-off force were evident between all maturational statuses (p < 0.05). Relative to bodyweight normalized forces, only peak take-off force was significantly different between prepubertal and postpubertal groups (p < 0.05; d = 0.22). Spring-like behavior showed small improvements from pubertal to postpubertal (p < 0.05; d = 0.25). Most females displayed poor SSC function at prepubertal (79.6%), pubertal (77.3%), and postpubertal (65.5%) stages of maturity. Large increases in absolute forces occur throughout maturation in female athletes; however, only small maturational differences were found in relative force or spring-like behavior. Consequently, most girls display poor SSC function irrespective of maturity.

Abstract
Trunk positioning and unexpected perturbations are high-risk conditions at the time of anterior cruciate ligament injury. The influence of trunk positioning on motor control responses to perturbation during dynamic performance is not known. We tested the influence of trunk position on feedforward and feedback control during unexpected perturbations while performing a novel single-limb squatting task. We also assessed the degree that feedforward control was predictive of feedback responses. In the flexed trunk condition, there were increased quadriceps (p < 0.026) and gluteus medius long-latency reflexes (p < 0.001) and greater quadriceps-to-hamstrings co-contraction during feedforward (p = 0.017) and feedback (p = 0.007) time bins. Soleus long-latency reflexes increased more than 100% from feedforward muscle activity regardless of trunk condition. Feedforward muscle activity differentially predicted long-latency reflex responses depending on the muscle (R2: 0.47-0.97). These findings support the concept that trunk positioning influences motor control responses to perturbation and that feedback responses may be invariant to the feedforward control strategy.

Abstract
CONTEXT The range of shoulder rotation is associated with shoulder pain in young male and female swimmers. However, the association between shoulder pain and shoulder complex mobility of the scapulothoracic and acromioclavicular joints has not yet been examined. Moreover, shoulder pain occurs more frequently in females than in males, but only a few studies have examined the relationship between shoulder pain and sex as a risk factor. This study aims to determine the association between shoulder complex mobility and shoulder pain in young male and female swimmers. DESIGN Prospective cohort design. METHODS The participants were competitive swimmers (n = 76; 37 males and 39 females) with a mean age of 14 years in Japan. The shoulder rotation width, which was the index of shoulder complex mobility, shoulder internal and external rotation range, and middle finger distance of the back-scratch test were measured. An examiner regularly visited the swimming clubs to evaluate the development of shoulder pain and swimming distance. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the physical characteristics related to the overall development of shoulder pain in both female and male swimmers. The cutoff value was calculated using receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS Sixteen participants, composed of 8 males and 8 females, developed shoulder pain. The overall swimming distance of the male (odds ratio [OR]: 1.0007, P = .01) and female (OR: 1.0018, P = .02) swimmers and the shoulder rotation width of the male (OR: 1.0952, P = .04) and female (OR: 0.888, P = .03) swimmers were identified as risk factors for shoulder pain. The cutoff value for swimming distance was 6000 m. Shoulder rotation width was more than 88 cm in males and <54 cm in females. CONCLUSIONS Hypomobility and hypermobility of the shoulder complex were identified as risk factors for shoulder pain in male and female swimmers, respectively.

Abstract
Dynamic knee valgus (DKV) malalignment affects the biomechanical characteristic during sports activities. This cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate mechanical energy absorption (MEA) strategies at initial contact (IC) and total landing (TL) phases during single-leg landing (SLL), and double-leg landing (DLL). Twenty-eight female athletes with DKV (age 10-14) were invited. MEA analysis of lower extremity joints was done in sagittal and frontal motion planes employing 8 Vicon motion capture cameras and 2 Kistler force plates. Statistical analysis was done using IBM Statistics (version24) by Bivariate Pearson Correlation Coefficient test. Knee extensors MEA during SLL (IC: P = 0.008, R = 0.522/TL: P < 0.001, R = 0.642) and DLL (IC: P < 0.001, R = 0.611/TL: P = 0.011, R = 0.525), and knee abductors during SLL (IC: P = 0.021, R = 0.474) were positively correlated with increased DKV angle. Ankle plantar flexors during SLL (TL: P = 0.017, R = - 0.477) and DLL (TL: P = 0.028, R = - 0.404), and hip extensors during SLL (TL: P = 0.006, R = - 0.5120) were negatively correlated with increased DKV angle. Compensated MEA in knee extensors was correlated with less ankle plantar flexion MEA during SLL (IC: P = 0.027, R = - 0.514/TL: P = 0.007, R = - 0.637) and DLL (IC: P = 0.033, R = - 00.412/TL: P = 0.025, R = - 0.485). These outcomes indicated a knee-reliant MEA strategy in female athletes with DKV during puberty, putting them at higher risks of ACL injuries during landing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The standard method to treat physically active patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is ligament reconstruction surgery. The rehabilitation training program is very important to improve functional performance in recreational athletes following ACL reconstruction. OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to compare the effects of three different training programs, eccentric training (ECC), plyometric training (PLYO), or combined eccentric and plyometric training (COMB), on dynamic balance (Y-BAL), the Lysholm Knee Scale (LKS), the return to sport index (RSI), and the leg symmetry index (LSI) for the single leg hop test for distance in elite female athletes after ACL surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fourteen weeks after rehabilitation from surgery, 40 elite female athletes (20.3 ± 3.2 years), who had undergone an ACL reconstruction, participated in a short-term (6 weeks; two times a week) training study. All participants received the same rehabilitation protocol prior to the training study. Athletes were randomly assigned to three experimental groups, ECC (n = 10), PLYO (n = 10), and COMB (n = 10), and to a control group (CON: n = 10). Testing was conducted before and after the 6-week training programs and included the Y-BAL, LKS, and RSI. LSI was assessed after the 6-week training programs only. RESULTS Adherence rate was 100% across all groups and no training or test-related injuries were reported. No significant between-group baseline differences (pre-6-week training) were observed for any of the parameters. Significant group-by-time interactions were found for Y-BAL (p < 0.001, ES = 1.73), LKS (p < 0.001, ES = 0.76), and RSI (p < 0.001, ES = 1.39). Contrast analysis demonstrated that COMB yielded significantly greater improvements in Y-BAL, LKS, and RSI (all p < 0.001), in addition to significantly better performances in LSI (all p < 0.001), than CON, PLYO, and ECC, respectively. CONCLUSION In conclusion, combined (eccentric/plyometric) training seems to represent the most effective training method as it exerts positive effects on both stability and functional performance in the post-ACL-surgical rehabilitation period of elite female athletes.

Abstract
Background The incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in women's basketball exceeds that of men. There is a paucity of data regarding career performance in Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) athletes with a history of ACL reconstruction. Purpose To determine whether WNBA athletes with a history of ACL injury prior to professional play have reduced career game utilization, defined as games played and started and minutes per game (MPG), as well as statistical performance, defined by player efficiency rating (PER). Study Design Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods Included were 42 WNBA players from 1997 to 2018 who had a history of ACL reconstruction before entering professional leagues. Body mass index (BMI), age, and position were collected for each player. Career data and performance statistics were likewise collected for each player's entire WNBA career. A control group of WNBA players with no history of ACL injury were matched by position, BMI, and age at the time of WNBA debut. Statistics compared game utilization and performance to assess the impact of ACL reconstruction. Results Athletes who sustained an ACL tear before entering the league played in fewer games per season in their first 3 professional seasons compared with healthy controls (24.2 ± 8.4 vs 28.2 ± 6.1; P = .02). Among athletes with a history of ACL reconstruction, 11 (26.2%) played only a single WNBA season, while no control athletes played in just 1 season. Additionally, athletes who had a previous ACL tear started significantly fewer games per season (9.0 ± 9.4 vs 14.0 ± 9.0; P < .01) and played fewer MPG (15.5 ± 7.2 vs 20.7 ± 5.5; P < .01) during their WNBA career. Athletes with a history of ACL tear had significantly shorter WNBA careers (4.8 ± 4.1 vs 8.1 ± 3.3 seasons; P < .001). Total professional play duration (WNBA + overseas) was significantly reduced in players with an ACL tear compared with controls (P < .05). PER was not significantly different between cohorts at any time point. Conclusion WNBA athletes with a history of an ACL tear before professional play had decreased career game utilization and workload throughout their career despite having similar PER compared with healthy controls.

Abstract
Ground reaction force (GRF) is a key metric in biomechanical research, including parameters of loading rate (LR), first impact peak, second impact peak, and transient between first and second impact peaks in heel strike runners. The GRFs vary over time during stance. This study was aimed to investigate the variances of GRFs in rearfoot striking runners across incremental speeds. Thirty female and male runners joined the running tests on the instrumented treadmill with speeds of 2.7, 3.0, 3.3, and 3.7 m/s. The discrete parameters of vertical average loading rate in the current study are consistent with the literature findings. The principal component analysis was modeled to investigate the main variances (95%) in the GRFs over stance. The females varied in the magnitude of braking and propulsive forces (PC1, 84.93%), whereas the male runners varied in the timing of propulsion (PC1, 53.38%). The female runners dominantly varied in the transient between the first and second peaks of vertical GRF (PC1, 36.52%) and LR (PC2, 33.76%), whereas the males variated in the LR and second peak of vertical GRF (PC1, 78.69%). Knowledge reported in the current study suggested the difference of the magnitude and patterns of GRF between male and female runners across different speeds. These findings may have implications for the prevention of sex-specific running-related injuries and could be integrated with wearable signals for the in-field prediction and estimation of impact loadings and GRFs.

Abstract
Ankle sprains are a common sports-related injury, and female athletes are more likely to sustain this injury than their male counterparts. Previous reviews have evaluated the efficacy of prevention programs in reducing ankle sprains in athletes, but no reviews have specifically focused on female athletes. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the sex-specific effectiveness of neuromuscular training (NMT) programs in reducing the risk of ankle sprains in female athletes. A search of PubMed, Ovid Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases was performed using the terms: (proprioception OR proprioceptive OR balance OR neuromuscular OR stability OR sensorimotor) AND training AND (ankle sprain OR ankle injury OR inversion injury OR ankle instability) AND (sport* OR athlet* or basketball OR volleyball OR soccer OR handball OR tennis OR netball OR hockey OR softball OR gymnastics OR danc* OR ballet OR cheerlead*) AND (female OR women OR girl). Studies selected for inclusion were written in English, evaluated female athletes in organized athletics or reported female-specific data for mixed-sex cohorts, included a non-NMT comparison, and used ankle injury rate outcome measures. Seven articles were selected for inclusion, which evaluated a combined 5,187 female basketball, handball, volleyball, soccer, and floorball players. Two studies reported significant differences between NMT participants and controls, concluding the greatest effects were observed in preventing non-contact ankle sprains. The remaining 5 studies, although not statistically significant, revealed an evident trend toward the efficacy of ankle injury prevention with NMT programs. Current available evidence supports the efficacy of NMT in preventing ankle sprains in female athletes. When designing NMT programs, investigators should consider utilizing comprehensive approaches that incorporate strength, balance, plyometric, and agility training as the studies with significant findings created comprehensive NMT programs. Further investigations into sport- and female-specific programs are warranted.

Severe ACL injuries that are inappropriately rehabilitated can potentially end athletes' careers. Consequently, a quick-and-simple to administer screening tool that can be used to infer knee moments during single-leg jump-landing could be useful for regular screening of netballers' predispositions to increased knee loading during single-leg jump-landing. Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate whether knee moments during weight-acceptance phase of a forward single-leg jump for maximal distance were correlated with reach scores in the Y-Balance Test (YBT). Study Design Cross-sectional, Correlation. Methods Twenty-one female national-level netballers performed two and three successful trials on the YBT and forward single-leg jump-landing, respectively, with the non-dominant leg. A three-dimensional motion analysis system captured trunk and lower limb kinematics and ground reaction forces of the non-dominant leg during landing. Averages of peak knee flexion-extension, valgus-varus and internal-external rotation moments across jumps were calculated and correlations with peak directional reach scores were examined. Results A strong positive correlation existed between posteromedial reach with externally applied flexor moments (r = 0.56, p = ≤ 0.01). A moderate negative correlation existed between anterior reach distances with internal rotation moments (T b = -0.32, p = 0.05). No correlation was found between valgus moments and YBT reaches. Conclusions The YBT shows potential to indicate externally applied flexion- and internal rotation moments during forward jump-landing on the non-dominant leg. Level of Evidence 3.

Evaluation included the isometric maximal strength to body mass (MS/BM) of the lower extremities extensors for unilateral and bilateral conditions, concentric isokinetic peak torque to body mass (PT/BM) of the hamstrings and quadriceps at 60°·s and 180°·s, IK to UK extensors maximal strength ratio (SR), IK to UK hamstrings (or quadriceps) peak torque ratio (TR), and hamstrings to quadriceps peak TR (H/Q). The results indicated a significantly lower unilateral and bilateral MS/BM of lower extremities extensors for IK than UK (p < 0.001). However, there were no significant differences in SR variable between the unilateral condition and bilateral condition (p = 0.448). Only at the 60°·s velocity, significantly lower quadriceps PT/BM for IK compared with the UK (p < 0.001) and the control group (p < 0.001) were observed. Torque ratio related to the quadriceps group was significantly lower at 60°·s than 180°·s (p = 0.004). Furthermore, significantly higher H/Q for IK compared with UK (p < 0.001) and control group (p = 0.008) only at 60°·s was found. These findings show a significant isometric strength asymmetry for both unilateral and bilateral conditions and a significant concentric strength asymmetry at the low velocity. This study suggests strengthening the weaker quadriceps group and balancing the strength between hamstrings and quadriceps within the knee with patellar tendinopathy.

Abstract
CONTEXT Patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are likely to have deficient dynamic postural stability compared with healthy sex- and age-matched controls. OBJECTIVES To test the hypothesis that patients undergoing ACL reconstruction have decreased dynamic postural stability compared with matched healthy controls. DESIGN Prospective case-control study. SETTING Orthopedic sports medicine and physical therapy clinics. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS Patients aged 20 years and younger with an ACL tear scheduled for reconstruction were enrolled prospectively. Controls were recruited from local high schools and colleges via flyers. INTERVENTIONS Patients underwent double-stance dynamic postural stability testing prior to surgery, recording time to failure and dynamic motion analysis (DMA) scores. Patients were then matched with healthy controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Demographics, time to failure, and DMA scores were compared between groups. RESULTS A total of 19 females and 12 males with ACL tears were matched with controls. Individuals with ACL tears were more active (Marx activity score: 15.7 [1.0] vs 10.8 [4.9], P < .001); had shorter times until test failure (84.4 [15.8] vs 99.5 [14.5] s, P < .001); and had higher (worse) DMA scores (627 [147] vs 481 [132], P < .001), indicating less dynamic postural stability. Six patients with ACL deficiency (1 male and 5 females) demonstrated lower (better) DMA scores than their controls, and another 7 (4 males and 3 females) were within 20% of controls. CONCLUSIONS Patients undergoing ACL reconstruction had worse global dynamic postural stability compared with well-matched controls. This may represent the effect of the ACL injury or preexisting deficits that contributed to the injury itself. These differences should be studied further to evaluate their relevance to ACL injury risk, rehabilitation, and return to play.

Abstract
Background: Graft choice in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and postoperative rehabilitation may affect strength recovery differently in men than women and therefore affect a timely and successful return to sport. Purpose: To compare knee extensor and flexor strength between men and women who underwent isolated ACLR with either patellar tendon or hamstring tendon (HST) autografts. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 166 patients (87 women, 79 men) with primary unilateral and uncomplicated ACLRs were recruited for participation. A total of 100 patients had bone–patellar tendon–bone (BPTB) autografts and 66 had HST autografts. At 6 months postoperatively, all patients completed the Tegner activity scale and International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Evaluation as well as underwent bilateral isokinetic (90 deg/s) tests of the knee extensor and flexor groups. Outcomes were recorded in a single session as part of a return-to-sport test battery. Surgical notes were obtained to determine the type of autograft and nerve block used at the time of ACLR. Results: There was a significant sex × graft type interaction for mass-normalized knee flexor torque (P = .017). Female patients with an HST graft had a significantly lower knee flexor torque compared with female patients with a BPTB graft (0.592 ± 0.49 N·m/kg vs 0.910 ± 0.24 N·m/kg; Cohen d [95% CI] = 0.91 [0.45, 1.36]). They also had a significantly lower knee flexor torque when compared with male patients with an HST graft (0.592 ± 0.49 N·m/kg vs 0.937 ± 0.35 N·m/kg; Cohen d [95% CI]= 0.88 [0.45, 1.31]). There were significant main effects for graft type with knee flexion (P = .001) and extension (P = .008) symmetry. Patients with a BPTB graft demonstrated lower knee extensor symmetry (65.7% ± 17.0%) and greater knee flexor symmetry (98.7% ± 18.0%) compared with patients with an HST graft (extension: 77.1% ± 32%, Cohen d [95% CI] = 0.47 [0.16, 0.79]; flexion: 82.9% ± 33.3%, Cohen d [95% CI] = 0.63 [0.31, 0.95]). We also observed a significant main effect for sex (P = .028) and graft type (P = .048) for mass-normalized knee extensor strength. Female participants and patients of either sex with BPTB grafts had lower knee extensor strength compared with male participants and patients with HST grafts, respectively. Conclusion: At approximately 6 months after ACLR, female patients reconstructed with HST autografts demonstrated weaker HST strength compared with female patients with a BPTB autograft. There were no differences in HST strength between graft types in male patients. Female patients appear to be recovering HST strength differently than male patients when using an HST autograft. These findings may have implications in surgical planning, postoperative rehabilitation, and return-to-sport decision making.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare clinical outcomes of knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) autograft reconstruction using all-inside quadrupled semitendinosus (AIST) versus bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) in a high-risk athletic population 24 years or younger. METHODS Skeletally mature candidates younger than 24 years old with an ACL tear were randomized into either the AIST (n = 32) or BPTB (n = 32) group and were followed for 2 years. Magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained at 1-year follow-up, and radiographs were obtained at 2-year follow-up. All surgeries were performed by a single surgeon using an anteromedial portal to establish the femoral tunnel. The primary outcome measure was KT-1000 stability testing. Secondary outcome measures included International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) Knee Evaluation Form, IKDC Subjective Form, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, Marx Activity Scale, visual analog pain scale, and SF-12 (Mental and Physical). RESULTS At 2-year follow-up, no statistical difference existed with KT-1000-measured side-to-side laxity between AIST (0.3 ± 0.7 mm, 95% confidence interval 0.0-1.0 mm) and BPTB (0.0 ± 0.8 mm, confidence interval CI -0.3 to 1.1 mm) (P = .197). In addition, no statistical differences between the groups were found for IKDC Subjective Form, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, Marx, SF-12 Mental, SF-12 Physical, or with regards to imaging findings. Patients with BPTB reported significantly greater postoperative pain scores at days 2 (P = .049), 3 (P = .004), and 7 (P = .015) and had significantly greater kneeling pain at 2 years (P < .019). A return to sport questionnaire at 2 years revealed no significant difference between the groups for returning to preoperative level of sport activity (83% AIST, 74% BPTB; P = .415). Two graft retears (7%; P = .222) occurred in the AIST group. Three patients in the BPTB group experienced ACL tears in the contralateral knee (9%; P = .239). CONCLUSIONS ACL reconstruction with an all-inside quadrupled semitendinosus autograft construct is equivalent to patellar BPTB autograft based on KT-1000 stability testing in athletes 24 years or younger. Abstract
CONTEXT Neuromuscular training programs can reduce the rate of noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, particularly in female athletes. OBJECTIVE To assess the awareness of, experience with, and factors associated with participation in preventive training programs (PTPs) among female collegiate athletes and their knowledge of ACL injuries. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sports programs. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS A total of 440 female NCAA athletes (age = 20 ± 1 years) representing 20 sports during the 2017-2018 academic year. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) We used a 12-item survey to collect data on each participant's age, sport, position, college, NCAA division, and awareness of and experience with PTPs. We performed descriptive statistics and used odds ratios (ORs) to assess relationships between demographic data and awareness of or interest in PTPs. RESULTS Of the 440 respondents, 85% (n = 373) knew that female athletes were at higher risk for sustaining ACL injuries than male athletes, and 89% (n = 391) knew that ACL injuries were preventable. Thirty-three percent (n = 143) were familiar with the concept of ACL PTPs. Only 15% (n = 64) had ever performed PTPs, but 89% (n = 391) reported they would perform a daily PTP if it could prevent ACL injuries. Fifty-two of the 64 respondents (81%) who had performed PTPs said athletic trainers or coaches oversaw the PTPs. Participants were more likely to be familiar with ACL PTPs if they (OR = 3.5; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.0, 5.8) or a teammate (OR = 4.6; 95% CI = 2.1, 9.8) had sustained an ACL injury. Respondents were more willing to perform PTPs if they (OR = 2.3; 95% CI = 0.80, 6.6) or a teammate (OR = 3.4; 95% CI = 1.8, 6.6) had sustained an ACL injury. CONCLUSIONS Although 89% of respondents expressed interest in performing daily ACL PTPs, only 15% had performed such programs, and only 33% were familiar with the concept of ACL PTPs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common in adults and cause knee instability, pain, and an increased risk of osteoarthritis. Previous studies demonstrated changed gait patterns in adult patients with ACL deficiency. In paediatric patients, ACL injuries were once thought to be rare but are being increasingly diagnosed due to greater involvement of children in contact sports and to the introduction of more effective diagnostic tools such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, little is known about gait adaptation in children with ACL deficiency. The objective of this study was to look for compensatory foot and ankle behaviours during gait in paediatric patients with symptomatic ACL deficiency. HYPOTHESIS Compensation for ACL deficiency during gait occurs at the foot and ankle in children, because compensation at the hip and pelvis would require greater energy expenditure. MATERIAL AND METHODS We included 47 patients, 33 males and 14 females, ranging in age from 9 to 17 years (mean, 14.1 years). The patients had a history of unilateral ACL injury documented by MRI and initially treated by immobilisation and physical therapy. They were allowed to walk with full weight-bearing on the affected limb and were not taking medications at the time of the study. All patients had pain, knee instability, or functional limitation. The physical examination showed joint laxity indicating surgical ACL reconstruction. None had neurological conditions, congenital musculoskeletal abnormalities, or a history of knee surgery. Gait analysis (GA) was performed using a Vicon 460 system. Kinematic data for the ankle and foot were compared to those in a control group of 37 healthy children. Ankle angular positions were calculated for each group at the following stance time points: initial contact (0% of gait cycle [GC]), mid-stance (25% GC), terminal stance (60% GC), and swing (83% GC). Foot progression data were recorded at mid-stance (25% GC) and swing (70% GC). Student's t test was applied to compare the results to reference values obtained at our laboratory and to data from the control group. RESULTS Compared to the reference values, the ankle was in plantar flexion at initial contact in 41 patients, and ankle dorsiflexion during the stance phase was diminished in 39 patients. The external foot progression angle was increased in 23 patients during the stance phase and 38 patients during the swing phase. Compared to the control group (mean age, 9.1 years), the patients had plantar flexion of the ankle at initial contact (3.43°±3.5° vs. 0.74°±3.6°, p<0.05) and decreased dorsiflexion during the stance phase (3.43°±3.5° vs. 0.74°±3.6°, p<0.05). No significant differences were found for any of the other parameters. DISCUSSION Children with ACL deficiency developed compensatory foot and ankle behaviours during gait that improved knee stability. Understanding these compensations may guide treatment optimisation. Abstract
Leg dominance has been reported as one potential risk factor for lower-limb injuries in recreational downhill skiers. The current study proposed and tested two possible mechanisms for a leg dominance effect on skiing injuries-imbalance of the knee muscle strength and bilateral asymmetry in sensorimotor control. We hypothesized that the knee muscle strength (Hypothesis 1; H1) or postural control (Hypothesis 2; H2) would be affected by leg dominance. Fifteen well-experienced recreational downhill skiers (aged 24.3 ± 3.2 years) participated in this study. Isometric knee flexor/extensor muscle strength was tested using a dynamometer. Postural control was explored by using a kinematic principal component analysis (PCA) to determine the coordination structure and control of three-dimensional unipedal balancing movements while wearing ski equipment on firm and soft standing surfaces. Only H2 was supported when balancing on the firm surface, revealing that when shifting body weight over the nondominant leg, skiers significantly changed the coordination structure (p < 0.006) and the control (p < 0.004) of the lifted-leg movements. Based on the current findings, bilateral asymmetry in sensorimotor control rather than asymmetry in strength seems a more likely mechanism for the previously reported effect of leg dominance on lower-limb injury risk in recreational downhill skiers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) lesion represents one of the most dramatic injuries in a football (soccer) player's career. There are many injury risk factors related to intrinsic (non-modifiable) and/or extrinsic (modifiable) factors of ACL injury. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION Research of the studies was conducted until September 2018 without publication data limitation or language restriction on the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, ISI, EXCERPTA. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS To date, evidence from the literature suggests that the risk of ACL injury is multifactorial and involves biomechanical, anatomical, hormonal, and neuromuscular factors. Despite this relative complexity, the mechanisms of injury are well known and rationally classified into two categories: mechanisms of injury based on contact or on non-contact with another player, with the non-contact injury mechanisms clearly prevailing over the mechanisms of contact injury. One of the most frequent biomechanical risk factors, associated with ACL non-contact injury, is represented by the valgus knee in the pivoting and cutting movements and in the landing phase after jumping. Gender-related risk factors show female populations to have a higher predisposition to ACL injury than males However, there are still some theoretical and practical aspects that need further investigation such as; genetic risks together with the role of estrogen and progesterone receptors in female populations, and the in-vivo interaction shoe-playing surface. In particular, the genetic risk factors of ACL lesion seem to be an interesting and promising field of investigation, where considerable progress has still to be made. CONCLUSIONS This narrative review provides an insight into the risk factors of ACL injury that could be used by practitioners for preventing injury in football (soccer).

Abstract
Athletes exposed to rapid maneuvers need a high level of dynamic knee stability and robustness, while also controlling whole body movement, to decrease the risk of non-contact knee injury. The effects of high-level athletic training on such measures of movement control have not, however, been thoroughly evaluated. This study investigated whether elite athletes (who regularly perform knee-specific neuromuscular training) show greater dynamic knee robustness and/or different movement strategies than non-athletic controls, in relation to overall knee function. Thirty-nine women (19 athletes, 20 controls) performed standardized rebound side hops (SRSH) while a motion capture system synchronized with two force plates registered three-dimensional trunk, hip, and knee joint angles and moments. Dynamic knee robustness was evaluated using finite helical axis (FHA) inclination angles extracted from knee rotation intervals of 10°, analyzed with independent t tests. Angle and moment curves were analyzed with inferential methods for functional data. Athletes had superior knee function (less laxity, greater hop performances, and strength) but presented similar FHA inclination angles to controls. Movement strategies during the landing phase differed; athletes presented larger (a) hip flexion angles (during 9%-29% of the phase), (b) hip adduction moments (59%-99%), (c) hip internal rotation moments (83%-89%), and (d) knee flexion moments (79%-93%). Thus, elite athletes may have a greater ability than non-athletes to keep the knee robust while performing SRSH more efficiently through increased engagement of the hip. However, dynamic knee robustness associated with lower FHA inclination angles still show room for improvement, thus possibly decreasing knee injury risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine eccentric knee flexor strength in elite female Australian Rules Football (ARF) players with and without a history of unilateral anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) using an ipsilateral semitendinosus graft. DESIGN Case-control. SETTING Elite ARF Women's competition. PARTICIPANTS Eighty-four elite female ARF players (mean age, 25 ± 4.9 years; height, 1.71 ± 0.73 m; weight, 67 kg ± 7.4 kg) with (n = 12) and without (n = 72) a history of unilateral ACLR in the previous 10 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Peak eccentric knee flexor force during the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE). RESULTS Players with a history of unilateral ACLR displayed lower levels of eccentric knee flexor strength in their surgically reconstructed limb than their uninjured contralateral limb (mean difference -53.77 N, 95% CI = -85.06 to -24.27, d = -0.51) and compared to the limbs of players with no history of injury (mean difference = -46.32 N, 95% CI = -86.65 to -11.13, d = -0.73). CONCLUSION Elite female ARF players with a history of unilateral ACLR display deficits in eccentric knee flexor strength in their surgically reconstructed limb for up to 10 years following surgery.
