A sensitive and specific solid-phase extraction-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of 11 haloacetic acids in aqueous samples

Enhanced detection of monoiodoacetic acid at ng/L level by ion chromatography with novel derivatization-free pretreatment

Concerns have recently arisen regarding the formation of carcinogenic and genotoxic iodinated haloacetic acids (HAAs), such as monoiodoacetic acid (MIAA), during the disinfection of iodine-containing water with chloramine. Existing detection methods for MIAA rely on either labor-intensive derivatization operations or expensive instruments, making analysis challenging. To bypass these issues, this study proposed a novel two-step liquid-liquid extraction strategy to enrich MIAA and then pioneered the integration of common ion chromatography (IC) with an ultraviolet detector to measure trace MIAA precisely. This novel approach achieved a remarkable 155.6-fold enrichment of MIAA and significantly reduced the need for water and chemicals, hence enhancing its efficiency and environmental friendliness. Besides, this method effectively removed coexisting anions and separated MIAA from other interferents by adjusting IC column and eluent conditions. The method detection limit of MIAA is an impressive 21.44 ng/L, and the recoveries in synthetic and real water samples ranged from 85 to 113%, with maximum deviations of 7.59%. We validated the reliability of our approach by comparing it with the USEPA 552.3 method. In conclusion, this IC-based method proves to be a robust and environment-benign solution for detecting trace MIAA in complex water components.

Derivatization-free multi-step extraction for trace haloacetic acids analysis with ion chromatography: Performance and mechanisms

Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are a type of disinfection byproducts commonly found in drinking water with carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic risks to humans. Currently, the analytical methods of trace HAAs are either labor-intensive or very expensive. We herein propose a facile multiple-step extraction strategy for HAAs analysis with common ion chromatography (IC). This study is based on a fundamental water chemistry principle that HAAs become protonated featuring positive logK_ow values (> 0.34) under pH < pK_a but deprotonated featuring negative logK_ow values (< -2.37) under pH > pK_a. By taking advantage of the species and property switches, HAAs can be extracted and enriched into methyl tert-butyl ether first at pH < 0.5 and then back-extracted into neutral water and enriched again. Equally important, interfering anions in IC chromatogram are eliminated because they have negative logK_ow values. Verification results show that HAAs were enriched by 11.4 times in average while interfering anions were almost eliminated (> 99%). Although similar to USEPA Method 552.3 in method detection limits (0.033-0.246 μg/L), recoveries (70%~110%), and relative standard deviations (< 9.91%), this method took ≤ 70 min to run a batch of samples without derivatization, which takes over 2 h. The methodology may be applicable to other pollutants that also have contrasting K_ow values at different pH.

Formation potential and analysis of 32 regulated and unregulated disinfection by-products: Two new simplified methods

Water disinfection is an essential process that provides safe water by inactivating pathogens that cause waterborne diseases. However, disinfectants react with organic matter naturally present in water, leading to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Multi-analyte methods based on mass spectrometry (MS) are preferred to quantify multiple DBP classes at once however, most require extensive sample pre-treatment and significant resources. In this study, two analytical methods were developed for the quantification of 32 regulated and unregulated DBPs. A purge and trap (P&T) coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was optimized that automated sample pre-treatment and analyzed volatile and semi-volatile compounds, including trihalomethanes (THMs), iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), haloketones (HKTs) and halonitromethanes (HNMs). LOQs were between 0.02-0.4 µg/L for most DBPs except for 8 analytes that were in the low µg/L range. A second method with liquid chromatography (LC) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was developed for the quantification of 10 haloacetic acids (HAAs) with a simple clean-up and direct injection. The LC-MS/MS direct injection method has the lowest detection limits reported (0.2-0.5 µg/L). Both methods have a simple sample pre-treatment, which make it possible for routine analysis. Hyperchlorination and uniform formation conditions (UFC) formation potential tests with chlorine were evaluated with water samples containing high and low TOC. Hyperchlorination formation potential test maximized THMs and HAAs while UFC maximized HANs. Ascorbic acid was found to be an appropriate quencher for both analytical methods. Disinfected drinking water from four water utilities in Alberta, Canada were also evaluated.

Impact of combined chlorine and UV technology on the bacterial diversity, antibiotic resistance genes and disinfection by-products in treated sewage

This paper explores the effect of hybrid chlorine and UV disinfection treatment against their individual usage on microbial community, functional genes, antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) and disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation. The disinfectant doses of 2.5 mg L^-1 chlorine and 41 mJ cm^-2 UV were selected based on the coliform counts to be attained in treated sewage. The highest bacterial diversity was observed in control (secondary treated) sample followed by UV, chlorine and hybrid disinfection. The highest elimination of bacterial species (296) was achieved in hybrid treatment, which was far better than the standalone treatments. The disinfection with all the disinfectants used resulted in increased abundance of ARGs. Motility genes were found to be enriched in hybrid disinfected samples. DBP concentrations were within the stipulated norms for all the disinfectant treatments used. Hybrid disinfection was observed to be more effective in alleviating the risks associated with the reuse of treated sewage.

Rapid determination of trace haloacetic acids in water and wastewater using non-suppressed ion chromatography with electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry

A simple and rapid method employing non-suppressed ion chromatography with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry has been developed for the direct determination of trace-level haloacetic acids (HAAs) in water samples. Using 70/30 (v/v) acetonitrile/1 M aqueous methylamine as the mobile phase, three IC columns - AS16, AS18 and AS24 from Thermo-Scientific - were tested, respectively, with the AS16 column exhibiting the best overall performance with respect to resolution and retention time. To assess the effects of mobile phase composition on retention time of HAAs, the AS16 column was further tested using (i) different proportions of acetonitrile to aqueous methylamine, (ii) different proportions of acetonitrile to aqueous solution at fixed methylamine concentrations, and (iii) different concentrations of methylamine at fixed proportions of acetonitrile to aqueous solution. With a low proportion of aqueous solution, van der Waals and/or hydrogen-bonding interactions appeared to play an important role in governing HAA retention, i.e., HAAs with relatively higher apparent logK_ow* caused by elevated solvent _s^spK_a exhibited longer retention times; whereas with a high proportion of aqueous solution, ionic interactions appeared to dominate retention of HAAs, with the more polarizable HAAs exhibiting longer retention times. Using 70/30 (v/v) acetonitrile/1 M aqueous methylamine, the method detection limits were in the range of 0.090-0.216 μg/L for the 11 selected chloro-, bromo- and iodoacetic acids. Finally, this method was applied to monitor HAAs yields in laboratory chlorination experiments and to determine concentrations of HAAs in tap water and wastewater effluent samples.
