Abstract
This health literacy intervention study, conducted on adolescent students, aimed to evaluate the impact of a comprehensive educational program on promoting healthy eating habits. The intervention sought to enhance adolescents' knowledge about nutrition, foster self-regulation skills, and ultimately improve their overall health, including their body mass index (BMI). Through a multi-component approach that combined theoretical learning with practical activities and the integration of digital tools such as the MyFitnessPal app, the study targeted improvements in food literacy, which encompasses nutrition knowledge, food label interpretation skills, and cooking abilities. These elements are critical in influencing adolescents' food choices and eating behaviors, with a focus on increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables while reducing the intake of fast food and processed snacks. The intervention was structured around a series of educational workshops and interactive sessions, facilitated by professionals experienced in nutrition. These sessions covered topics such as food composition, the importance of a balanced diet, and strategies for avoiding excessive consumption of processed and high-energy-density foods. A distinctive feature of the program was its use of digital tools to enhance engagement and allow for the practical application of learned concepts through food tracking and activity monitoring. Preliminary results indicate positive outcomes in terms of increased food knowledge and improved dietary habits among participants. Notably, there was a significant improvement in adolescents' BMI, highlighting the potential of food literacy interventions to contribute to better physical health outcomes. The study underscores the importance of adopting multidisciplinary and technology-enhanced approaches in educational programs aimed at promoting healthy eating among adolescents. The study's findings suggest that well-structured food education programs, tailored to address the specific needs of adolescents, can facilitate positive changes in eating behavior. This highlights the critical role of food literacy in adolescents' health and wellbeing and points to the need for continued investment in research and development to optimize intervention strategies. The integration of digital technologies and a focus on self-regulation strategies are identified as promising avenues for future research and educational practice, reinforcing the call for innovative investments in food education and health promotion among the youth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy measurement lays a solid foundation to identify associations with health outcomes and monitor population health literacy levels over time. In mainland China, most existing health literacy instruments are either knowledge-based or practice-based, making health literacy results incomparable between China and other countries. This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the 12-item Health Literacy Population Survey (HLS19-Q12) in a general population of Chinese adults. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted to recruit primary carers of students from 11 schools in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, using convenience cluster sampling. Participants completed an online self-administered survey that collected information on key sociodemographics, health literacy (HLS19-Q12 and a comparison tool: Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ)), and health-related outcomes. Using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist as a guideline, we tested internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, structural validity, concurrent predictive validity, and convergent validity of the HLS19-Q12. RESULTS Overall, 14,184 participants completed the full survey. The HLS19-Q12 showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.93), moderate test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient = 0.54), satisfactory content validity (based on the 12-matrix health literacy model), and strong structural validity (comparative fit index = 0.94, Tucker and Lewis's index of fit = 0.93, root mean square error of approximation = 0.095). Concurrent predictive validity results showed health literacy was associated with both health determinants and health-related outcomes. The HLS19-Q12 had weak to strong correlations (coefficients = 0.24 to 0.42) with the nine scales of the HLQ. Respondents had an average score of 81.6 (± 23.0) when using the HLS19-Q12, with 35.0% and 7.5% having problematic and inadequate levels of health literacy, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The HLS19-Q12 is a reliable and valid instrument to measure health literacy in our sample. Further validation is needed with a more nationally representative sample of Chinese adults. The HLS19-Q12 could be used as a comprehensive, skills-based, and easy-to-administer health literacy assessment tool integrated into population surveys and intervention evaluations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the relationship between sociodemographic and clinical factors with health literacy in Brazilian adolescents. METHOD This is a cross-sectional study with 526 adolescents aged 14 to 19. Data were collected virtually between July and September 2021 using a sociodemographic characterization questionnaire, clinical profile and the Health Literacy Assessment Tool - Portuguese version. The variables were evaluated by multiple linear regression with normal response, with significance p < 0.05. RESULTS The average age was 16.9 years (±1.6), the average health literacy score was 25.3 (±5.4). Female gender (p = 0.014), university educational level (p = 0.002) and use of medication (p = 0.020) were related to higher levels of health literacy. Adolescents with chronic illnesses had a higher total literacy score, on average 1.51 points, compared to those without chronic illnesses. CONCLUSION Male adolescents and those with less education performed worse in health literacy and, therefore, deserve special attention in health promotion actions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the effective factors on BF (Breastfeeding) continuation is Breastfeeding self-efficacy (BFSE). This study was conducted to determine the relationship between Health Literacy (HL) and BFSE in lactating mothers referring to primary health care centers. METHODS This cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out on lactating mothers referring to primary health care centers in 2022. Multi-stage cluster sampling was done with 160 samples. The data were collected using demographic questionnaire, Persian shortened form of the BSES is a self-reported instrument for measuring a mother's Breastfeeding self-efficacy and Health Literacy for Iranian Adults (HELIA). Data were analyzed using ANOVA, independent t-test, correlation test and liner regression by SPSS version 16, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS There was a significant positive correlation between the HL score and its four domains( Reading, Behaviour and decision making, Accessing, and Understanding) except for the appraisal domain with BFSE score. The variables of use of formula, HL, duration of breastfeeding, and education were considered predictors of BFSE. CONCLUSION In general, the results indicate a possible relationship between BFSE and mothers' HL. Therefore, improving mother's HL can have a positive effect on promoting infants' nutrition.

Abstract
Introduction Health literacy (HL) refers to an individual's ability to process and use health information to make health-related decisions. However, previous HL scales did not fully cover all aspects of this concept. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive Hong Kong HL scale (HLS-HK) and evaluate its psychometric properties among Chinese adults. Methods A scale of 31-item covering Nutbeam's framework, namely functional and interactive HL (FHL and IHL), and critical HL (CHL) within three subdomains: critical appraisal of information, understanding of social determinants of health, and actions to address social determinants of health, was developed based on previous literature review and Delphi survey. Cognitive interviews were performed to examine all items' face validity in terms of three aspects: comprehensiveness, clarity, and acceptability. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to investigate the scale's psychometric properties, including its internal consistency reliability, factorial structure validity, convergent validity, and predictive validity. Results Nine interviewees participated in the cognitive interviews in October 2021. Based on the input from respondents, two items were deleted, two items were combined, and several items' wording was revised. The other items were clear and readable. Finally, 28 items remained. A total of 433 adults completed the questionnaire survey between December 2021 and February 2022. After excluding one item with low inter-item correlations, the scale's internal consistency reliability was acceptable, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.89. Exploratory factor analysis produced a five-factor model, as shown in the original theoretical framework. These factors accounted for 53% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that the fit indices for this model were acceptable (comparative fit index = 0.91, root mean square error of approximation = 0.06, and root mean square residual = 0.06). The scale is also significantly correlated with theoretically selected variables, including education and self-rated health. Conclusion The HLS-HK is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating HL. Compared with existing tools, this scale extended the operationalization of FHL, IHL, and CHL and fully operationalized the CHL via three subdomains. It can be used to understand the difficulties and barriers that people may encounter when they use health-related information and services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy is a critical driver of achieving an equitable world for every child and adolescent. Although the relationship between health literacy and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been documented, little is known among adolescents. In addition, due to lack of theory-driven empirical research, it remains unknown about the full relationship between health literacy, its antecedents, and HRQoL. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to apply Manganello's framework to investigate how health literacy was associated with its antecedents and HRQoL in Beijing secondary students. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with 650 students in years 7 to 9 from four secondary schools in Beijing. Based on Manganello's health literacy framework, a self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on health literacy, its antecedents (i.e., sociodemographics, self-efficacy, social support, school and community environment), and HRQoL. The 8-item Health Literacy Assessment Tool was used to measure health literacy (score range 0-37), and the KIDSCREEN-10 was used to measure HRQoL (score range 10-50). Path analysis was conducted to examine the mediating role of health literacy in the relationship between its antecedents and HRQoL. KEY RESULTS Overall, the average score of students' health literacy and HRQoL was 26.37 (±5.89) and 37.49 (±5.78), respectively. Health literacy was positively correlated with HRQoL (r = 0.36, p < .01). In the final path model, health literacy was not associated with HRQoL. However, students' social support, school environment, and community environment were associated with HRQoL. Health literacy was affected by self-efficacy, social support, and school environment (all p < .05). CONCLUSIONS A range of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental factors were associated with health literacy and HRQoL. A holistic approach is needed to improve health literacy and HRQoL through multilevel intervention strategies such as increasing personal self-efficacy, promoting social support, and creating positive environments. Abstract
Health literacy is a broad and multidimensional construct, making its measurement and conclusions inconsistent. This study aims to compare the patterning of health literacy using different assessment tools and examine their impact on children's developmental outcomes. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 650 students in Years 7-9 from four secondary schools in Beijing. Health literacy was measured by the eight-item health literacy assessment tool (HLAT, score range 0-37), the six-item Newest Vital Sign (NVS, score range 0-6), and the 16-item Health Literacy Survey (HLS, score range 0-16). Based on Manganello's health literacy framework, information on upstream factors (e.g., gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status) and developmental outcomes (e.g., health-promoting behaviours, health service use, global health status) was collected. Overall, the average scores for health literacy were 26.34 ± 5.89, 3.64 ± 1.64, and 13.72 ± 2.94, respectively, for HLAT, NVS, and HLS. The distribution of health literacy varied by socio-demographics and individual characteristics except for gender, no matter which health literacy assessment tool was used. The magnitude of associations between health literacy, its upstream factors and developmental outcomes was greater when using three-domain instruments (HLAT and HLS) than using single-domain instruments (NVS). The approach to health literacy measurement will influence the conclusion. Using multidimensional assessment tools may better capture a child's health literacy and contribute to the maximum efficiency and effectiveness of school-based health literacy interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been about 30 years since the first health literacy instrument was developed. This study aimed to review all existing instruments to summarize the current knowledge on the development of existing measurement instruments and their possible translation and validation in other languages different from the original languages. METHODS The review was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar on all published papers on health literacy instrument development and psychometric properties in English biomedical journals from 1993 to the end of 2021. RESULTS The findings were summarized and synthesized on several headings, including general instruments, condition specific health literacy instruments (disease & content), population- specific instruments, and electronic health. Overall, 4848 citations were retrieved. After removing duplicates (n = 2336) and non-related papers (n = 2175), 361 studies (162 papers introducing an instrument and 199 papers reporting translation and psychometric properties of an original instrument) were selected for the final review. The original instruments included 39 general health literacy instruments, 90 condition specific (disease or content) health literacy instruments, 22 population- specific instruments, and 11 electronic health literacy instruments. Almost all papers reported reliability and validity, and the findings indicated that most existing health literacy instruments benefit from some relatively good psychometric properties. CONCLUSION This review highlighted that there were more than enough instruments for measuring health literacy. In addition, we found that a number of instruments did not report psychometric properties sufficiently. However, evidence suggest that well developed instruments and those reported adequate measures of validation could be helpful if appropriately selected based on objectives of a given study. Perhaps an authorized institution such as World Health Organization should take responsibility and provide a clear guideline for measuring health literacy as appropriate.

Aspectos socioeconômicos, perfil saúde-doença, letramento em saúde, ameaça à saúde pela COVID-19 e intenção de não se vacinar foram analisados por associação bivariada e regressão linear múltipla com resposta Poisson. Resultados: maior pontuação de letramento em saúde (p=0,010), doença cardíaca (p=0,006), menor renda (p=0,000) e morar na região norte (p=0,007) foram fatores que contribuíram para o sentimento de maior ameaça pela COVID-19. O letramento em saúde não influenciou a intenção de não se vacinar (p=0,091), cuja prevalência foi menor entre os adolescentes do Sudeste quando comparados aos do Norte (p=0,010), entre os que cursavam o ensino superior (p=0,049) e entre aqueles com maior renda (p=0,000). Conclusão: letramento em saúde influenciou a percepção da ameaça da doença, mas não a intenção de não se vacinar. Avaliação da ameaça à saúde pela COVID-19 e a prevalência da intenção de não se vacinar foram influenciadas pela região de residência, renda e escolaridade, o que reforça a importância dos determinantes sociais da saúde nesse contexto.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivo Analisar os efeitos de intervenção educativa no letramento em saúde e no conhecimento sobre diabetes em adultos atendidos na atenção primária à saúde. Método Trata-se de estudo quase-experimental com intervenção educativa durante a consulta de enfermagem, atividade em grupo e acompanhamento telefônico com 33 adultos diagnosticados com diabetes mellitus tipo 2, cadastrados em uma Unidade Estratégia Saúde da Família no Sul do Brasil. Aplicaram-se instrumentos sociodemográfico e clínico (Spoken Knowledge in Low Literacy Patients with Diabetes e Eight-Item Health Literacy Assessment Tool) antes e após a intervenção. Os dados foram analisados pelos testes de Wilcoxom, coeficiente de correlação de Spearman e McNemar. Resultados A maioria dos participantes eram mulheres (69,7%), com idade média de 57,0 anos, tempo de escolaridade inferior a nove anos (69,7%) e tempo de diagnóstico ≤10 anos (51,5%). Após a intervenção, obteve-se aumento do conhecimento sobre a diabetes (p = 0,001), correlacionado ao letramento em saúde (r = 0,494; p = 0,001) e ao tempo do diagnóstico (r = 0,455; p = 0,001). Conclusão e implicação para a prática A utilização de instrumentos para mensurar o letramento em saúde e o conhecimento sobre diabetes possibilitou a construção de estratégias educativas voltadas para as lacunas existentes, promovendo aumento do conhecimento, o qual favorece o desenvolvimento das habilidades para a autogestão.

Abstract
Objective: investigate the influence of health literacy on the assessment of COVID-19 threat to health and the intention not to be vaccinated among Brazilian adolescents. Method: cross-sectional study with 526 Brazilian adolescents aged 14 to 19 years. Socioeconomic aspects, health-disease profile, health literacy, health threat by COVID-19 and intention not to be vaccinated were analyzed by bivariate association and multiple linear regression with Poisson response. Results: higher health literacy score (p=0.010), cardiovascular disease (p=0.006), lower income (p=0.000), and living in the North region (p=0.007) were factors that contributed to feeling more threatened by COVID-19. Health literacy did not influence the intention not to be vaccinated (p=0.091), whose prevalence was lower among adolescents in the Southeast region when compared to those in the North region (p=0.010), among those who attended higher education (p=0,049) and those with higher income (p=0.000). Conclusion: health literacy influenced the perception of COVID-19 threat, but not the intention not to be vaccinated. Assessment of COVID-19 threat to health and prevalence of the intention not to be vaccinated were influenced by the region of residence, income, and education, which reinforces the importance of social determinants of health in this context.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the effects of educational intervention on health literacy and knowledge about diabetes in adults assisted in primary health care. Method This is a quasi-experimental study with educational intervention during the nursing consultation with 33 adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus registered in a Family Health Strategy Unit in southern Brazil and involving group activity and telephone follow-up. Sociodemographic and clinical instruments were applied before and after the intervention; these instruments included the Spoken Knowledge in Low Literacy Patients with Diabetes and the Eight-Item Health Literacy Assessment Tool. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon, Spearman, and McNemar correlation coefficient tests. Results Most participants were women (69.7%), with a mean age of 57.0 years, less than nine years of schooling (69.7%), and ≤10 years of diagnosis (51.5%). After the intervention, there was an increase in knowledge about diabetes (p = 0.001), correlated with health literacy (r = 0.494; p = 0.001) and the time of diagnosis (r = 0.455; p = 0.001). Conclusion and implications for practice The instruments to measure health literacy and knowledge about diabetes enabled the construction of educational strategies aimed at existing gaps, increasing the knowledge, thereby favoring the development of skills for self-management.

Abstract
Depressive symptoms are prevalent in university students and may impair their social, educational, and economic transition into adulthood. Identifying the factors that determine depressive symptoms is crucial for the design of effective policy interventions. This study aims to examine the associations between health literacy and depressive symptoms among medical students, and to evaluate the effect of different types of social support as a potential mediator. A cross-sectional survey of medical students was conducted through convenience sampling in East China. Associations between variables were explored using OLS and the mediation effect was estimated using the Karlson, Holm and Breen method. A total of 746 valid questionnaires were collected. The prevalence of depressive symptoms among the sample was 32.4%. Higher health literacy levels and social supports were significantly associated with lower levels of depressive symptoms. Social support partially mediated the association between health literacy and depressive symptoms, accounting for a 54.03% of the total effect size. These findings suggest that interventions for medical student mental wellbeing could improve health literacy. Whilst family support reflects greatest impact, Universities can also lead and innovate novel interventions for this critical stage of life. Future research can extend this study by exploring the dynamic interactions between health literacy, depressive symptoms, and other sources of social support. Comparisons of these findings across the different regions of China and in other university subject disciplines are also warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy enables a person to make good decisions regarding health care, disease prevention, and health promotion to maintain and improve health. Although health literacy research in China has gained increasing attention in recent years, most existing studies focus on adults rather than adolescents. In addition, little theory-driven empirical research has been conducted to fully understand the relationship among health literacy, its influencing factors, and health outcomes scored on a skills-based health literacy instrument. OBJECTIVE This study applied Manganello's framework to investigate how health literacy was related to its antecedents and health status in secondary students in Beijing, China. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with 650 students in Years 7 to 9 (age 11-17 years) from four secondary schools. Students completed a self-administered questionnaire based on Manganello's health literacy framework, which measured key upstream determinants, including health literacy and self-report health status. Health literacy was measured on an 8-item skills-based instrument that assesses a person's ability to find, understand, appraise, and communicate health information in everyday life (scores range from 0-37). Descriptive statistics and path analysis were conducted to investigate the mediating role of health literacy in predicting health status. KEY RESULTS Overall, the average scores of students' health literacy was 26.37 (±5.89). Manganello's framework was supported by the data collected (χ2/df = 2.049, p = .001, comparative fix index = 0.966, root mean square error of approximation = 0.041). Personal self-efficacy (r = 0.11, p = .007), social support (r = 0.18, p < .001), and school environment (r = 0.27, p < .001) predicted health literacy, which in turn predicted students' health status (r = 0.12, p = .005). CONCLUSIONS Adolescent health literacy is not only a person's capability to protect health, but also an interactive outcome with the broader environment. Promoting health literacy could be a useful strategy to improve health status for adolescents; however, a holistic approach is needed to increase students' self-efficacy, promote social support, and create positive school environments to achieve optimal health literacy and health outcomes. Abstract
While health literacy research in mainland China has gained increasing attention, most studies focus on adults. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of health literacy in the relationship between a range of upstream factors and health behaviors among Chinese secondary students. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 650 students in Years 7 to 9 from four secondary schools in Beijing. Based on an adapted health literacy framework from Manganello, a self-administered questionnaire was designed to collect information on upstream factors, health literacy, and health behaviors. Path analysis results showed that the proposed framework was mostly supported by empirical data after modification indices were examined and 3 direct paths were added. Students' self-efficacy, social support, and school environment were associated with health literacy, which in turn predicted health behaviors. A holistic approach is needed to improve both adolescent health literacy and health behaviors for Chinese school-aged adolescents.

Abstract
ISSUES ADDRESSED While adolescent health literacy research has gained momentum, there is little evidence regarding its implementation and data collection in school settings. This study explored the feasibility of collecting health literacy data from Australian secondary schools and piloted three health literacy instruments. METHODS A cross-sectional study was designed to recruit four government secondary schools in Melbourne. Active, opt-in consent was obtained from parents and students in Years 7-9, and an online survey was conducted. Three health literacy instruments were used: the 8-item Health Literacy Assessment Tool (HLAT-8), the Newest Vital Sign (NVS), and the 47-item Health Literacy Survey (HLS-47). RESULTS A total of 120 students (age 12-15 years) were finally recruited from one school, whereas the other three schools declined due to busy educational commitment or no interest in research. Learnings and reflections on data collection included: a shared perspective of health literacy evaluation between school and researchers; the feasibility of online data collection; and the possibility of obtaining passive, opt-out consent. About one-quarter (23.7%-32.2%) of students were likely to have poor health literacy. CONCLUSIONS Although the recruitment was challenging, this pilot study indicates the feasibility of large-scale online health literacy survey in future school-based research. SO WHAT?: Measuring and monitoring adolescent health literacy is essential to achieve the aim of the Australian Curriculum of Health and Physical Education. More implementation research is needed with representative samples to validate health literacy instruments and examine the impact of health literacy on health promotion outcomes in Australian adolescents.

Abstract
(1) Background: There is a need for studies on population-level health literacy (HL) to identify the current state of HL within and between countries. We report comparative findings from 10 European countries (Austria, Belgium (Fl), Czechia, England, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Macedonia, Poland, and Slovakia) on adolescents’ HL and its associations with gender, family affluence (FAS), and self-rated health (SRH). (2) Methods: Representative data (N = 14,590; age 15) were drawn from the HBSC (Health Behavior in School-Aged Children) study. The associations between HL, gender, FAS, and SRH were examined via path models. (3) Results: The countries exhibited differences in HL means and in the range of scores within countries. Positive associations were found between FAS and HL, and between HL and SRH in each country. Gender was associated with differences in HL in only three countries. HL acted as a mediator between gender and SRH in four countries, and between FAS and SRH in each country. (4) Conclusions: The findings confirm that there are differences in HL levels within and between European countries, and that HL does contribute to differences in SRH. HL should be taken into account when devising evidence-informed policies and interventions to promote the health of adolescents.

Abstract
Health literacy is a promising approach to promoting health and preventing disease among children and adolescents. Promoting health literacy in early stages of life could contribute to reducing health inequalities. However, it is difficult to identify concrete needs for action as there are few age-adjusted measures to assess generic health literacy in young people. Our aim was to develop a multidimensional measure of health literacy in German to assess generic health literacy among 14- to 17-year-old adolescents, namely, the "Measurement of Health Literacy Among Adolescents Questionnaire" (MOHLAA-Q). The development process included two stages. Stage 1 comprised the development and validation using a literature review, two rounds of cognitive interviews, two focus groups and two rounds of expert assessments by health literacy experts. Stage 2 included a standard pretest (n = 625) of the questionnaire draft to examine the psychometric properties, reliability and different validity aspects. The MOHLAA-Q consists of 29 items in four scales: (A) "Dealing with health-related information (HLS-EU-Q12-adolescents-DE)"; (B) "Communication and interaction skills", (C) "Attitudes toward one's own health and health information", and (D) "Health-related knowledge". The confirmatory factor analysis indicated a multidimensional structure of the MOHLAA-Q. The internal consistency coefficients (Cronbach's α) of the scales varied from 0.54 to 0.77. The development of the MOHLAA-Q constitutes a significant step towards the comprehensive measurement of adolescents' health literacy. However, further research is necessary to re-examine its structural validity and to improve the internal consistency of two scales.

Abstract
While adolescent health literacy has gained momentum, it is under-researched from a cross-cultural perspective. This study aims to compare health literacy among two cultural groups of secondary students in Beijing and Melbourne. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 770 students from five secondary schools in Beijing and Melbourne. A self-administered questionnaire was designed to collect information on health literacy (the eight-item health literacy assessment tool (HLAT-8), the Newest Vital Sign (NVS) and the 47-item Health Literacy Survey (HLS-47)), its antecedents and health outcomes. Overall, students’ health literacy in Melbourne (n = 120) was higher than that in Beijing (n = 650): 28.25 ± 6.00 versus 26.37 ± 5.89 (HLAT-8); and 4.13 ± 1.73 versus 3.65 ± 1.64 (NVS). The proportion of students with low health literacy varied by instruments, representing 23.7–32.2% in Melbourne and 29.0%–45.5% in Beijing. In both cultural groups, students’ self-efficacy, social support, and perceptions of school environment were associated with their health literacy, which in turn predicted their health behaviours, patient-provider communication and health status. Given the nature of our study design and small samples, a cautious conclusion would be that adolescent health literacy is sensitive to the broad cultural context and might be an interactive outcome influenced by an individual’s health skills and the social environment. Particularly, creating a supportive school environment is critical to develop adolescent health literacy that would eventually contribute to better health outcomes.

Abstract
To verify the validity of functional health literacy scale and analyze what influences functional health literacy.Using convenience sampling method based on cross-sectional data to select 589 left-behind senior high-school students in an ethnic minority area, using the functional health literacy scale.The scale results were relatively strong, and the absolute fitness index, value-added fitness index, and simple fitness index reached the fitness standards. The overall functional health literacy score was (0.65 ± 0.12), which falls within the upper middle class. Gender(t = 2.40, P < .05), ethnicity (t = 4.28, P < .001), place of residence (t = = 4.51, P < .001), mother's education level (F = 3.608, P < .05), self-assessment of grades for 1 year (F = 25.781, P < .001), and whether the participant liked the health education content (F = 9.416, P < .001) had impacts on overall functional health literacy.The study results show that relatively satisfactory reliability and validity and can be applied further analysis for improving students functional health literacy levels.

Abstract
Health literacy has gained popularity as a useful concept to promote and protect health. Even though health literacy research has been prolific it has also been fragmented, facing challenges in achieving its empowerment and social justice-related aims. Crucial limitations make the application of its principles to the health of vulnerable and underrepresented groups problematic, even though these groups are disproportionately affected by ill health. Efforts to refine and make the concept more relevant have tended to expand health literacy models and situate health literacy 'in context' to reflect environmental and social factors shaping health literacy. Context-related factors however, have not been consistently embedded in operationalisation and measurement efforts.This paper argues for health literacy to be re-conceptualised through a capabilities approach lens. It proposes that the capabilities approach can uniquely address the conceptual and methodological criticisms applied to health literacy, whilst encompassing its critical conceptual understandings of health. The advantage of this approach over and above other developments in health literacy theory and practice is its focus on both people's opportunities or freedoms to achieve desired health-related aims, and their ability to do so. It enables shifting the focus away from health literacy as individual skills and competencies and towards the enabling or inhibiting factors shaping health literacy. A participatory approach is seen as essential for realising this conceptual shift.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous studies indicate substantial correlations between low health literacy and poor health outcomes. However, empirical findings remain inconsistent and are theoretically challenging. In this study, we conceptually place health literacy within an established model of health inequality. Studying multiple pathways, we estimate the associations between health literacy and six health outcomes and decompose these associations with health literacy's covariates. METHODS Cross-sectional data from the Young Adult Survey Switzerland was used for the analyses (n = 5959, age = 18-25). Logistic regression and KHB decomposition analyses were applied to estimate health literacy's coefficients and confounding percentages. RESULTS Eleven covariates were associated with health literacy (p < 0.001). Ten covariates reduced the naïve health literacy coefficient when included in the regression models (confounding percentages: 36.7-86.9%). In three out of six models, the confounding effects led to non-significant health literacy coefficients. CONCLUSIONS We found that health literacy's associations with health outcomes are confounded by socioeconomic, material, psychosocial, and health-related factors. More investigations on the causal importance of health literacy, respectively, on its potential to health promotion are required.
