Abstract
Phytoestrogens are xenoestrogens found in plants with a myriad of health benefits. However, various studies reported the genotoxic effects of these substances. Thus, we reviewed in vitro and in vivo studies published in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to evaluate the genotoxic and the genoprotective potential of phytoestrogens. Only studies written in English and intended to study commercially available phytoestrogens were included. The screening was performed manually. Moreover, the underlying mechanism of action of phytoestrogens was described. Around half of those studies (43%) reported genoprotective results. However, several studies revealed positive results for genotoxicity with specific model organisms and with dose/concentration dependence. The assessment of the selected articles showed substantial differences in the used concentrations and a biphasic response was recorded in some phytoestrogens. As far as we know, this is the first study to assess the genotoxic and genoprotective effects of phytoestrogens systematically.

Abstract
Cryogels are support materials which are good at mimicking extracellular matrix due to their excellent hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and macroporous structure, thus they are useful in facilitating cell activities during healing process. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol-gelatin (PVA-Gel) based cryogel membranes loaded with pterostilbene (trans-3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxystilbene; PTS) (PVA-Gel/PTS) was synthesized as wound dressing materials. PVA-Gel and PVA-Gel/PTS were synthesized with the polymerization yields of 96% ± 0.23% and 98% ± 0.18%, respectively, and characterized by swelling tests, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The swelling ratios were calculated as 98.6% ± 4.93% and 102% ± 5.1%, macroporosities were determined as 85% ± 2.13% and 88% ± 2.2%, for PVA-Gel and PVA-Gel/PTS, respectively. It was determined that PVA-Gel and PVA-Gel/PTS have 17 m2 /g ± 0.76 m2 /g and 20 m2 /g ± 0.92 m2 /g surface areas, respectively. SEM studies were demonstrated that they have ~100 μm pore sizes. According to 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), trypan blue exclusion and live-dead assay results, it was observed that cell proliferation, cell number and cell viability were higher in PVA-Gel/PTS cryogel at 24, 48, and 72 h compared to PVA-Gel. A strong and transparent fluorescent light intensity was observed indicating higher cell population in PVA-Gel/PTS in comparison with PVA-Gel, according to 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining. SEM, F-Actin, Giemsa staining and inverted-phase microscope image of fibroblasts in PVA-Gel/PTS cryogels revealed that dense fibroblast proliferation and spindle-shaped morphology of cells were preserved. Moreover, DNA agarose gel data demonstrated that PVA-Gel/PTS cryogels had no effect on DNA integrity. Consequently, produced PVA-Gel/PTS cryogel can be used as wound dressing material to promote wound therapies, inducing cell viability and proliferation.

Abstract
Phenylselenenylzinc chloride (PhSeZnCl) is an air-stable selenolate, easily synthesizable through oxidative insertion of elemental zinc into the Se-halogen bond of the commercially available phenylselenyl chloride. PhSeZnCl was shown to possess a marked GPx-like activity both in NMR and in vitro tests, and to effectively react with cellular thiols, and was supposed for a potential use in the chemotherapy of drug-resistant cancers. However, activity of PhSeZnCl in hepatic cells has never been tested before now. In this in vitro approach, we evaluated the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and apoptotic activities, as well as the effects on cell cycle of PhSeZnCl in two preclinical hepatic models, namely HepG2 and HepaRG cells. Results showed that cell viability of HepG2 and HepaRG cells decreased in a dose-dependent manner, with a more marked effect in HepG2 tumour cells. Moreover, treatment with 50 µg/mL PhSeZnCl caused an increase of primary DNA damage (4 h) and a statistically significant increase of HepG2 cells arrested in G2/M phase. In addition, it altered mitochondrial membrane potential and induced chromosomal DNA fragmentation (24 h). In HepaRG cells, PhSeZnCl was able to determine a cell cycle-independent induction of apoptosis. Particularly, 50 µg/mL induced mitochondrial membrane depolarization after 24 h and apoptosis after 4 h treatment. Futhermore, all PhSeZnCl concentrations tested determined a significant increase of apoptotic cells after 24 h. Apoptosis was also highlighted by the detection of active Caspase-3 by Western Blot analysis after 24 h exposure. In conclusion, this first toxicological assessment provides new insights into the biological activity of PhSeZnCl in preclinical hepatic models that will be useful in future safety assessment investigation of this compound as a potential pharmaceutical. Abstract
Obesity has become a prominent epidemic disease since its worldwide prevalence has
shown a continuous rise over the past few decades. The primary aim of obesity treatment is to effectively
reduce the intake of energy, while simultaneously increasing energy expenditure. Increasing
thermogenesis is one of the methods to increase energy expenditure. Thermogenesis, which primarily
occurs in brown adipose tissue, can also be produced by beige adipose tissue, through a process
known as browning. The browning process has recently been attracting a great deal of attention as
a potential anti-obesity agent. Many well-researched inducers of the browning process are readily
available, including cold exposure, agonist β3-adrenergic, agonist peroxisome proliferator activated
receptor γ, fibroblast growth factor 21, irisin and several nutraceuticals (including resveratrol,
curcumin, quercetin, fish oils, green tea, etc.). This mini review summarizes the current knowledge
and the latest research of some nutraceuticals that are potentially involved in the browning process.

Abstract
Probiotics are living microorganisms, which when taken in adequate amount, provide various health benefits by maintaining the balance of bacteria in the intestine. Probiotics are purported to have countless health benefits, some of which include improved digestion, enhanced immunity, prevention of cancer and diabetes. The most common group of probiotics include species of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Enterococcus. In order to work as an effective probiotic, the microbial strain is expected to exhibit certain desirable characteristics like acid and bile tolerance, antimicrobial activity, adhesion to intestinal epithelium, etc. The fermented products contain a myriad of bacteria, some of which are characterized as probiotics and are responsible for various health benefits associated with the product. The fermented foods and drinks have been consumed in India since time immemorial. The art of fermentation has been a part of the traditional knowledge of India for thousands of years. The use of fermented products is strongly linked to the culture and tradition of India. Some traditional fermented drinks of India having probiotic potential include Koozh, Toddy, Kanji, Hamei and Handia. Further research on the probiotic potential of traditional fermented drinks may pave a path for their medical usage and commercial development.

Abstract
High levels of disinfection by-products (DBPs) are constantly found in drinking water distributed in Sardinia, an Italian island with a tourist vocation and critical issues related to the drinking water supply. To reduce the concentration of trihalomethanes the disinfectant in use was changed - chlorine dioxide was adopted instead of hypochlorite. However, this caused the appearance of other DBPs (e.g., chlorites) in water distributed to the population. Thus, the use of monochloramine as a secondary disinfectant (associated with chlorine dioxide as the primary disinfectant) was evaluated in four drinking water treatment plants supplied by artificial basins located in the central-northern part of Sardinia. Raw, disinfected and distributed waters were studied for genotoxicity using a battery of in vitro tests on different cells (bacteria, plant and mammalian cells) to detect different genetic endpoints (i.e., point and chromosome mutations and DNA damage). Moreover, a chemical and microbiological characterisation of water samples was performed. All samples of water distributed to the people showed mutagenic or genotoxic effects in different cells/organisms. In particular, chromosome aberrations in plant cells and DNA damage in human cells were observed. In this study, the use of chloramines associated with other disinfectants did not eliminate the mutagenicity present in the raw water and when the raw water was not mutagenic it introduced mutagenic/genotoxic substances. A careful management of drinking water is needed to reduce health hazards associated with the mutagenicity of drinking water.

Abstract
The characteristics of plum fruits of three different species were investigated throughout their development (including over-ripening). The content of primary and secondary metabolites was expressed as amount per gram DW (dry weight) and per fruit in order to obtain information about the balance between their synthesis and dissimilation at different stages of fruit development. In all the plums, during the first stages of development, glucose was the most abundant sugar, whereas sucrose increased during ripening. There was no decrease in malate content per fruit before the commercial harvesting time of any of the plums, whereas a decrease was observed during over-ripening. In general, both the total phenol content and the contents of individual phenols in the flesh expressed on gram DW decreased throughout development, whereas their content per fruit increased, indicating that these decreases were due to a dilution effect arising from the expansion of the flesh. During the development of the flesh, the increase in the contents of the investigated metabolites per fruit shows that there was no net dissimilation of malate up to commercial harvest and of phenols throughout fruit development. Good correlations between the content of phenols to antioxidant activity were found. Shiro flesh, during the last part of fruit development, had lower total carbohydrate and polyphenol contents, lower antioxidant activities, and a higher malate content than the flesh of the other two genotypes.

Abstract
Agro-industry byproducts can still contain large amounts of phenolic compounds, and one of the richest sources are grape skins and seeds as grape pomace, both fermented (red winemaking) and unfermented (white winemaking). The residual polyphenolic content depends on various factors such as grape variety, vintage, and winemaking technique. In this work, four red grape varieties cultivated in northern Italy were studied: Albarossa, Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Uvalino. The work was aimed at studying the polyphenolic composition of skins and seeds from fresh grapes and from the corresponding pomace after fermentative maceration, to assess the actual importance of the varietal differences when processing winemaking byproducts for the extraction of phenolic compounds. The skin and seed extracts were prepared by solvent extraction with a 50% hydroalcoholic solution. The polyphenolic composition of all extracts was determined by spectrophotometry and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); the content and the monomer composition of condensed tannins were determined by phloroglucinolysis; the antioxidant capacity was measured with the ABTS (2,2’-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonate)) method. The antioxidant capacity was higher for the seeds than for the skins, and it was positively correlated with the condensed tannins content. Significant differences in polyphenolic composition of fresh grape skins and seeds were observed between the different cultivars. In particular, Barbera and Albarossa skins were significantly distinguished from Nebbiolo and Uvalino skins for a higher content of anthocyanins and a lower content of vanillin-reactive flavans and condensed tannins; regarding seeds, Barbera and Albarossa had a lower content of vanillin-reactive flavans, proanthocyanidins, and condensed tannins than Nebbiolo and Uvalino. The winemaking process extracted the phenolic compounds to a different extent from skins and seeds, regardless of the cultivar. The differences between cultivars in the polyphenolic profile disappeared after fermentative maceration.

Abstract
The in vitro antithrombotic properties of polar lipid constituents of malted grain (MG), pelleted hops (PH), brewer’s spent grain (BSG), spent hops (SH), wort, and bottled beer from the same production line were assessed in human platelets. The total lipids (TL) were extracted according to the Bligh and Dyer method and further separated into the total neutral lipids (TNL) and total polar lipids (TPL) extracts by counter-current distribution. The TL, TNL, and TPL extracts of all samples were assessed for their ability to inhibit platelet-activating factor (PAF) and thrombin-induced human platelet aggregation. The raw materials, by-products, wort, and beer lipid extracts all exhibited antithrombotic properties against PAF and thrombin. However, the beer TPL exhibited the lowest IC50 values against PAF-induced (7.8 ± 3.9 µg) and thrombin-induced (4.3 ± 3.0 µg) platelet aggregation indicating that these polar lipids were the most antithrombotic. The lipid extracts tended to be more bioactive against the thrombin pathway. The fatty acid content of all the TPL extracts were assessed using GC-MS. The fatty acid composition of the most bioactive TPL extracts, the wort and the beer, shared similar fatty acid profiles. Indeed, it was noted that fermentation seems to play a role in increasing the antithrombotic properties of polar lipids against PAF and thrombin by moderately altering the polar lipid fatty acid composition. Furthermore, the use of brewing by-products as a source of functional cardioprotective lipids warrants further investigation and valorisation.

Abstract
Polyphenols, including anthocyanins, flavonoids and stilbenes, which constitute one of the most abundant and ubiquitous groups of plant metabolites, are an integral part of the human diet. Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene), a naturally occurring polyphenol produced by some plants as a self-defence agent, has an antifungal activity. Resveratrol has been found in some plants (such as grapevine, pine and peanuts) and is considered to have beneficial effects also on human health. The number of studies on resveratrol greatly increased in PubMed database since 1997, after the anticancer effect of this molecule was first reported. The interest in resveratrol in grape was originally sparked by epidemiological studies indicating an inverse relationship between long-standing moderate consumption of red wine and the risk of coronary heart disease; this effect has been ascribed to resveratrol, which possesses diverse biochemical and physiological properties, including antiplatelet and anti-inflammatory proprieties, and provides a wide range of health benefits ranging from chemoprevention to cardioprotection. Recently, resveratrol has been described as an anti-aging compound. The consumption of resveratrol (red wine) together with a Mediterranean diet or a fast-food meal (“McDonald'sMeal”) had a positive impact on oxidized (ox-) LDL and on the expression of oxidative and inflammatory genes. Therefore, this review summarized the most important scientific data about healing and preventive potential of resveratrol, acting as cardioprotective, neuroprotective, chemopreventive and antioxidant agent.

Piceid (resveratrol 3- O-β-D-glucoside) was glycosylated by cyclodextrin glucanotransferase to give oligosaccharides of resveratrol. Resveratrol oligosaccharides induced mRNA expression of SIRT1–6.

Abstract
Resveratrol and its derivative, oxyresveratrol, have various pharmacological effects. Several studies demonstrated the anticancer activity of resveratrol. However, little is known about the anticancer activity of oxyresveratrol. In this study, we compared the antiproliferative and antiangiogenic effects of oxyresveratrol and resveratrol. Three head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines (HSC-3, HN-8, and HN-30) were treated with a range of concentrations of either resveratrol or oxyresveratrol. MTT assays demonstrated that resveratrol and oxyresveratrol significantly inhibited cell survival in a dose-dependent manner. Although ELISA and Real-time PCR revealed that oxyresveratrol inhibited vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression at both the mRNA and protein level, the reduction was lower than that of resveratrol. Altogether, these findings indicate that oxyresveratrol possesses anticancer properties by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation and VEGF expression. However, its efficacy is lower compared with that of resveratrol.
