Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between current pet keeping and allergic diseases, including bronchial asthma in adolescents, is controversial. This study was conducted to evaluate these associations among children aged 13-14 years in Yazd. METHODS This study is part of a multicenter cross-sectional study of the Global Asthma Network (GAN) in Yazd, Iran, in 2020, in which 5141adolescents enrolled. Information on respiratory symptoms and pet-keeping (dog/cat/birds) was obtained by a questionnaire derived from the GAN standard questionnaire. RESULTS Of 5141 participants who completed the study, 1800 (35%) children kept pets during the last year. Birds were the most common pet kept by adolescents (88%). Severe asthma was more common in bird and cat keepers (P=0.003 and P=0.034, respectively) than dog keepers. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant association between study-defined current asthma and cat keeping, but not bird or dog ownership (P=0.02). Moreover, we found that current any pet-keeping (birds, cats, dogs) was associated with a higher prevalence of asthma-related symptoms, including wheezing, night dry cough, and exercise-induced wheezing in the past year (P=0.002, P=0.000 and P=0.000 respectively). CONCLUSION Current any pet-keeping is associated with asthma-related symptoms. Additionally, cat keeping had a significant association with study-defined current asthma. The current keeping of birds, as the most common pet in our area, or cat keeping increases the risk of severe asthma in adolescents. Therefore, as an important health tip, this needs to be reminded to families by health care providers.

Abstract
The number of people suffering from allergies is increasing worldwide every year. With the prevalence of domestic animals, especially dogs, allergens associated with them can be found ubiquitously, thereby increasing the risk of anaphylaxis in sensitized individuals. Currently, there are 8 known dog allergens, but not all of them have been thoroughly studied. The commonly used skin prick tests often fall short and fail to provide a comprehensive assessment of a patient's condition, thus making allergy diagnosis challenging. Fortunately, the introduction of new allergy diagnostic methods has made it possible to accurately identify clinically significant allergens for patients. These findings can then be used to prescribe appropriate therapy or provide specific recommendations to the patients. This review focuses on the most important dog allergens and modern allergy diagnostic techniques that are gradually being incorporated into medical practice, thus expanding the capabilities of allergists.

Prevalence and influencing factors of wheeze and asthma among preschool children in Urumqi city: a cross-sectional survey. Sci Rep 2023; 13:2263. Abstract
To investigate the prevalence and indoor environmental influencing factors of wheeze and asthma among preschool children in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China to provide a strong basis for prevention and control. In August 2019, a cross-sectional study involving 8153 preschool children was conducted in 60 kindergartens in Urumqi. The ALLHOME-2 questionnaire was used for childhood wheeze and asthma survey, and the dampness in buildings and health (DBH) questionnaire was used for the childhood home dwelling and living environment survey. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression was then used to analyze the potential influencing factors of childhood asthma and wheeze. The prevalence of wheeze and asthma in children was 4.7% and 2.0%, respectively. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression results suggested that ethnicity other than the Han Chinese (odds ratio (OR) 1.39, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05-1.84), caesarean section (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.00-1.53), family history of asthma (OR 5.00, 95% CI 3.36-7.44), carpet or floor bedding at home (OR 1.40, 95% CI 1.05-1.87), purchasing new furniture in the mother's residence during pregnancy (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.06-2.36), pet keeping in the residence at aged 0-1 year (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.13-2.13), passive smoking by child in the current residence (OR 1.35, 95% CI 1.01-1.80), and having mould or hygroma in the child's residence at aged 0-1 year (OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.12-2.64) were risk factors for wheeze. In addition, Girls (OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.59-0.90) was a protective factor for wheeze. Caesarean section (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.06-2.00), family history of asthma (OR 7.06, 95% CI 4.33-11.53), carpet or floor bedding at home (OR 2.20, 95% CI 1.50-3.23), and pet keeping in the residence at aged 0-1 year (OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.04-1.83) were risk factors for asthma, whereas Girls (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.42-0.80) was a protective factor for asthma. This survey indicates that the purchase of new furniture, the placement of carpet or floor bedding in the child's residence, the pets keeping, room dampness or moldy phenomena, and passive smoking may all contribute to an elevated risk of wheeze or asthma in children.

Abstract
Introduction Wheezing is a common symptom in early childhood. Recurrent wheezing is defined as more than three episodes of wheezing in the past year. Many studies have been conducted to delineate the risk factors for recurrent wheezing and to predict which of these children will progress to asthma. Most studies about risk factors and the clinicodemographic profile of children with recurrent wheeze have been carried out in developed nations. Data in developing countries may differ. This study was carried out to identify risk factors associated with recurrent wheezing in children in a tertiary care center. Materials and methods It was a retrospective, matched case-control study conducted over a period of two years (July 2019 to July 2021). Records of children aged one month to 12 years who came to pediatric OPD or were admitted to a pediatric ward with a history of recurrent wheezing were included in the study. Cases with uncontrolled recurrent wheezing diagnosed by examination with an unreliable history and those with a global developmental delay were excluded from the study. The study involved the hospital records of 60 children. Of these, 30 were recurrent wheezers, and 30 were non-wheezers (controls). Data were collected with detailed proformas from case histories and examination sheets. The proforma had several known and suspected risk factors associated with wheezes. Each risk factor was studied and compared with the control group. The risk factors included in this study were male gender, not exclusively breastfed, history of bottle feeding, exposure to vehicles; exposure to pollen; exposure to animals; using an agarbatti or dhoop, passive smoking, or playing with a soft toy. Data were entered in an Excel sheet, and appropriate statistical analyses were done. Results The male-to-female ratio was 2:1. Out of the number of cases, 73.33% were younger than six years; 56.66% of cases were not exclusively breastfed, and 43.33% were exclusively breastfed for six months; 20% of the cases were bottle-fed, and 40% of the controls were bottle-fed. The percentage of cases exposed to vehicle smoke was 26.66%, while 20% of cases had exposure to pollen and 16% of controls were exposed to pollen. 30% of cases were exposed to animals, and 23% of controls were exposed to animals. With regard to passive smoking, 16.66% of cases were exposed to passive smoking, and 20% of controls were not exposed to passive smoking. Out of the study group, 26.66% of the children played with soft toys. Of all these risk factors, a significant difference between cases and controls was found in only one factor: not being exclusively breastfed for six months. All other risk factors showed no significant difference between cases and controls. Conclusion The present study concluded that the significant risk factor that was associated with recurrent wheezing was "not exclusively breastfeeding." The other factors studied that were suspected to be associated with recurrent wheezing cannot be ruled out entirely due to the relatively small size of the sample and the need to be studied further in detail.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases among children and adults and can lead to a high health and socioeconomic burden. Allergic rhinitis (AR) often precedes the development of asthma. This study aims to clarify the risk factors for cocurrent asthma in patients with AR in eastern China. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 3739 patients with AR was performed in eastern China. Patients meeting the criteria for AR were evaluated using a skin-prick test (SPT) of 16 common aeroallergens. A logistic regression analysis was used to assess the risk factors of asthma in patients with AR. RESULTS The prevalence of asthma in patients with AR was 14.23%. The patients sensitive to dust mites (D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus) had the highest prevalence (76.84% and 73.68%). A significant difference was found in sensitization to four types of allergens (D. farinae, D. pteronyssinus, dog dander, Alternaria alternata) in patients with AR with and without asthma. The strongest risk factor for asthma in patients with AR was an allergy to Aspergillus fumigatus (adjusted OR, 2.42; 95% CI, 1.50-3.90), followed by allergy to D. pteronyssinus (adjusted OR, 2.06; 1.30-3.27), and allergy to dog dander (adjusted OR, 1.92; 1.24-2.97). Various risk factors that are independently associated with asthma in patients with AR were found in different age groups. CONCLUSIONS We observed a difference in risk factors in patients with AR with and without asthma. Clarifying the risk factors for asthma in patients with AR is important and may be beneficial to the optimal interventions of asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The relationship between pet ownership and childhood asthma remains controversial. In recent years, there have been increasing studies with large sample size. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between pet ownership and childhood asthma. METHOD Relevant research was retrieved from PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Web of science. The retrieval was as of October 1, 2021. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Stata 15.0 was used to conduct the meta-analysis. RESULTS A total of 60 studies with large sample size published between 1995 and 2021 were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, which included 18 cohort studies and 42 case-control studies covering 27 countries and 1,871,295 children. As shown by meta-analysis results, cat ownership (OR = 1.18, 95%CI: 1.05∼1.33) and dog ownership (OR = 1.12, 95%CI: 1.0 0∼1.24) have a significant bearing on the occurrence of childhood asthma. Pet ownership was also positively correlated with the occurrence of severe childhood asthma (OR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.11∼1.20). CONCLUSION Pet ownership, especially cats and dogs, is associated with the occurrence of asthma in children.

Abstract
Asthma is a group of inflammatory conditions that compromises the airways of a continuously increasing number of people around the globe. Its complex etiology comprises both genetic and environmental aspects, with the intestinal and lung microbiomes emerging as newly implicated factors that can drive and aggravate asthma. Longitudinal infant cohort studies combined with mechanistic studies in animal models have identified microbial signatures causally associated with subsequent asthma risk. The recent inclusion of fungi in human microbiome surveys has revealed that microbiome signatures associated with asthma risk are not limited to bacteria, and that fungi are also implicated in asthma development in susceptible individuals. In this review, we examine the unique properties of human-associated and environmental fungi, which confer them the ability to influence immune development and allergic responses. The important contribution of fungi to asthma development and exacerbations prompts for their inclusion in current and future asthma studies in humans and animal models.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the associations between domestic pets and respiratory health in children. METHODS We randomly recruited 11,611 school children from Zhongshan, a southern city in China. Information about the respiratory symptoms and disease history of the recruited children, the status of domestic pets, and other related risk factors were collected from March to July 2016. RESULTS We identified cat-keeping at home increases the risk of persistent cough (OR, 1.77; 95%CI, 1.03-3.05); poultry-keeping at home increases the risk of current asthma (OR, 3.87; 95%CI, 1.08-13.92) and allergic rhinitis (OR, 1.84; 95%CI, 1.01-3.37); sleeping with pets increases the risk of persistent phlegm (OR, 5.04; 95%CI, 1.05-24.28), doctor-diagnosed asthma (OR, 3.35; 95%CI, 1.31-8.57) and current asthma (OR, 4.94; 95%CI, 1.05-23.31) in children. CONCLUSIONS Cat-keeping and molds on the wall of the house had the multiplicative and additive interaction in doctor-diagnosed asthma. In conclusion, pet-keeping increased the risk of respiratory symptoms in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Controversies persist regarding whether exposure to cat or dog increases the risk of asthma and allergic rhinitis. OBJECTIVE This meta-analysis aimed to assess the associations between exposure to cats or dogs and the development of asthma and allergic rhinitis. METHODS A systematic review was performed to identify case-control and cohort studies before May 2019, evaluating the association between exposure to cats and dogs and the risk of asthma and rhinitis. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The odds ratios (ORs) and risk ratios (RRs) were pooled for case-control and cohort studies, respectively. Subgroup analyses were performed on prespecified study-level characteristics. RESULTS The meta-analysis of 34 cohort studies showed a protective role of exposure to cats [RR: 0.88, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.77-0.99] or dogs (RR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.73-0.97) in the development of asthma. The subgroup analysis of birth cohort (RR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.56-0.93) and children population (RR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.70-0.96) also suggested a favorable role of exposure to dogs in the development of asthma. Pooled evidence from 13 case-control studies indicated no significant impact of cats (OR: 1.66, 95% CI: 0.39-2.94) and dogs (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 0.92-1.52) on the development of asthma. A pooled analysis of five cohort studies showed a favorable effect of exposure to cats (RR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.33-0.86) or dogs (RR: 0.68, 95% CI 0.44-0.90) on the development of allergic rhinitis. CONCLUSION The findings indicated a protective effect of exposure to cats and dogs, especially ownership, on the development of asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
Background Aeroallergens and food allergens play a key role in the pathogenesis of asthma; they are the target for future immunotherapy worldwide. Food allergens have been studied often in Egypt, but data are defective concerning the prevalent Egyptian aeroallergens that can be affected by the climatic conditions in Egypt. So, our study aimed to explore the dominant sensitizing aeroallergens in Egyptian patients with bronchial asthma. Methods Cross-sectional study performed on 122 Egyptian asthmatic patients. Sera from all patients were examined by enzyme allegro sorbent test (EAST) method for specific IgE to a panel of 18 inhaled allergens. Results Positive specific IgE to aeroallergens was detected in 43.44% of our patients. German cockroach (18.9%) was the most frequent sensitizing aeroallergen amongst our asthmatic patients, followed by the fungal allergens (15.57%) and house dust mites (HDMs) (13.93%). Conclusion German cockroach, fungi, and house dust mite are the chief sensitizing aeroallergens in Egyptian asthmatic patients.

Abstract
Asthma is a group of inflammatory conditions that compromises the airways of a continuously increasing number of people around the globe. Its complex etiology comprises both genetic and environmental aspects, with the intestinal and lung microbiomes emerging as newly implicated factors that can drive and aggravate asthma. Longitudinal infant cohort studies combined with mechanistic studies in animal models have identified microbial signatures causally associated with subsequent asthma risk. The recent inclusion of fungi in human microbiome surveys has revealed that microbiome signatures associated with asthma risk are not limited to bacteria, and that fungi are also implicated in asthma development in susceptible individuals. In this review, we examine the unique properties of human-associated and environmental fungi, which confer them the ability to influence immune development and allergic responses. The important contribution of fungi to asthma development and exacerbations prompts for their inclusion in current and future asthma studies in humans and animal models.

Abstract
The human microbiota plays a crucial role in educating the immune system and influencing host health right since birth. Various maternal factors along with the vertical microbial transfer from the mother, as well as the horizontal environmental transmission and internal factors relating to the infant, play a crucial role in modulating the gut microbiota. The early life microflora is highly unstable and undergoes dynamic changes during the first few years, converging towards a more stabilized adult microbiota by co-evolving with the host by the age of 3-4 years. Microbiota studies have underlined the role of dysbiosis in developing several metabolic disorders like obesity, diabetes and immune-related disorders like asthma, to name a few. Thus, understanding early life microbial composition and various factors affecting the microbial community will provide a platform for developing strategies/techniques to maintain host health by restoring gut microbial flora. This review focuses on the factors that affect the microbial composition of the foetus in utero, during birth, infancy through childhood.

Abstract
Decades of peer reviewed evidence demonstrate that: 1)Bordetellapertussisand pertussis toxin are potent adjuvants, inducing asthma and allergic sensitization in animal models of human disease, 2)Bordetella pertussisoften colonizes the human nasopharynx, and is well documented in highly pertussis-vaccinated populations and 3) in children, a history of whooping cough increases the risk of asthma and allergic sensitization disease. We build on these observations with six case studies and offer a pertussis-based explanation for the rapid rise in allergic disease in former East Germany following the fall of the Berlin Wall; the current asthma, peanut allergy, and anaphylaxis epidemics in the United States; the correlation between the risk of asthma and gross national income per capita by country; the lower risk of asthma and allergy in children raised on farms; and the reduced risk of atopy with increased family size and later sibling birth order. To organize the evidence for the pertussis hypothesis, we apply the Bradford Hill criteria to the association between Bordetella pertussisand asthma and allergicsensitization disease. We propose that, contrary to conventional wisdom that nasopharyngealBordetella pertussiscolonizing infections are harmless, subclinicalBordetella pertussiscolonization is an important cause of asthma and diseases of allergic sensitization.

Abstract
The global increase in the prevalence of asthma has been related to several risk factors; many of them linked to the "westernization" process and the characteristics of the indoor microbial environment during early life may play an important role. Living in moisture damaged homes contributes to the exacerbation and development of asthma. However, living in homes with a rich variety and high levels of microbes (e.g., traditional farming environments) may confer protection. While the results of previous research are rather consistent when it comes to observation/report of indoor moisture damage or when comparing farming versus non-farming homes, when actual measures targeting indoor microbial exposure are included, the picture becomes less clear and the associations appear inconsistent. This may partly be due to limitations of sampling and measurement techniques that make comparisons difficult and provide an incomplete picture of the indoor microbial environment and in particular also human exposure. In this regard, new generation sequencing techniques represent a potential revolution in better understanding the impact of the indoor microbiome on human health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Finnish and Russian Karelian children have a highly contrasting occurrence of asthma and allergy. In these two environments, we studied associations between total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) with methylation levels in cluster of differentiation 14 (CD14). METHODS Five hundred Finnish and Russian Karelian children were included in four groups: Finnish children with high IgE (n = 126) and low IgE (n = 124) as well as Russian children with high IgE (n = 125) and low IgE (n = 125). DNA was extracted from whole blood cells and pyrosequenced. Three CpG sites were selected in the promoter region of CD14. RESULTS Methylation levels in two of the three CpG sites were higher in the Finnish compared to Russian Karelian children. In the promoter area of CD14, the Finnish compared to Russian children with low IgE had a significant (p < 0.0001) increase in methylation levels at the Amp5Site 2. Likewise, the Finnish compared to Russian children with high IgE had a significant (p = 0.003) increase in methylation levels at the Amp5Site 3. In Russian children with low vs. high IgE, there were significant differences in methylation levels, but this was not the case on the Finnish side. In the regression analysis, adding the methylation variation of CD14 to the model did not explain the higher asthma and allergy risk in the Finnish children. CONCLUSIONS The methylation levels in the promoter region of CD14 gene were higher in the Finnish compared to Russian Karelian children. However, the methylation variation of this candidate gene did not explain the asthma and allergy contrast between these two areas.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the associations of in utero and early life exposure to cats/dogs and birds with the risk of lifetime doctor-diagnosed asthma and other respiratory conditions in a sample of Mexican American (MA) children 4-18 years of age. METHODS This study is a population-based cross-sectional investigation of 1816 MA children. We conducted multiple logistic models examining the relationship of asthma and wheezing with exposures to cats/dogs and birds in utero, infancy and at the time of the survey adjusted for country of birth, family history of asthma/allergies, antibiotics use in infancy and other covariates. RESULTS In adjusted analyses, in utero exposure to cats/dogs and birds jointly was associated with increased odds of asthma (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 2.89; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.34-6.23), ever wheezing (aOR: 1.96; 95% CI: 1.11-3.46) and current exercise-induced wheezing (aOR: 3.16; 95% CI: 1.27-7.85) compared to children not exposed to these pets in utero. Children who were exposed to both cats/dogs and birds in utero had an elevated, albeit statistically non-significant, odds of current wheezing. Exposures in infancy and at the time of the survey to cats/dogs and birds were not associated with asthma or wheezing. CONCLUSIONS In utero exposure to pets might be associated with an increased risk of asthma and respiratory conditions in a sample of non-affluent MA children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In epidemiological studies that aim to investigate the relationship between pet exposure and allergy/asthma, pet exposure is often ascertained by means of a questionnaire, but it is unclear which questionnaire items are used. The objective of this study was to systematically review self-reported pet exposure assessment in questionnaires used in epidemiological studies which explore the associations between pets and allergy/asthma. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and papers were selected according to pre-specified eligibility criteria. The pet exposure questions used were classified within a framework including direct pet contact, indirect pet contact (e.g. through carers or grandparents) and avoidance behaviour. Authors were contacted when the questions used were not reported in detail. RESULTS Ninety-six full text papers were systematically reviewed. All studies assessed direct pet contact, but less than half (45%) explicitly assessed whether pets were allowed indoors. The vast majority of studies assessed both pet exposures during the first year of life and after the first year of life. The minority (13%) assessed whether pet(s) were kept at places regularly visited by the child and pet exposure in utero (15%). Even fewer studies assessed indirect contact to pets (n = 8) and avoidance behaviour (n = 10). CONCLUSIONS In epidemiological studies, the ascertainment of pet exposure through questionnaires appears to vary greatly. This variation might partly explain the inconsistent and contradictory results of the effects of pet exposure on the development of allergy and asthma.

Abstract
Aims: To quantify the reduction potential of asthma in Finland achievable by adjusting exposures to selected environmental factors. Methods: A life table model for the Finnish population for 1986–2040 was developed and Years Lived with Disability caused by asthma and attributable to the following selected exposures were estimated: tobacco smoke (smoking and second hand tobacco smoke), ambient fine particles, indoor dampness and mould, and pets. Results: At baseline (2011) about 25% of the total asthma burden was attributable to the selected exposures. Banning tobacco was the most efficient mitigation action, leading to 6% reduction of the asthma burden. A 50% reduction in exposure to dampness and mould as well as a doubling in exposure to pets lead each to a 2% reduction. Ban of urban small scale wood combustion, chosen as a mitigation action to reduce exposure to fine particles, leads to a reduction of less than 1% of the total asthma burden. Combination of the most efficient mitigation actions reduces the total asthma burden by 10%. A more feasible combination of mitigation actions leads to 6% reduction of the asthma burden. Conclusions: The adjustment of environmental exposures can reduce the asthma burden in Finland by up to 10%.

Abstract
This paper presents an analysis of airborne biogenic particles (1 mkm–1 mm) found in the snow in several cities of the Russian Far East during 2010–2013. The most common was vegetational terraneous detritus (fragments of tree and grass leaves) followed by animal hair, small insects and their fragments, microorganisms of aeroplankton, and equivocal biological garbage. Specific components were found in samples from locations close to bodies of water such as fragments of algae and mollusc shells and, marine invertebrates (needles of sea urchins and shell debris of arthropods). In most locations across the Far East (Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Blagoveshchensk, and Ussuriysk), the content of biogenic particles collected in the winter did not exceed 10% of the total particulate matter, with the exception of Birobidzhan and the nature reserve Bastak, where it made up to 20%. Most of all biogenic compounds should be allergic: hair, fragments of tree and grass leaves, insects, and microorganisms.

Abstract
Background There are a number of different methods that can be used when estimating the size of the owned cat and dog population in a region, leading to varying population estimates. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to evaluate the methods that have been used for estimating the sizes of owned cat and dog populations and to assess the biases associated with those methods. A comprehensive, systematic search of seven electronic bibliographic databases and the Google search engine was carried out using a range of different search terms for cats, dogs and population. The inclusion criteria were that the studies had involved owned or pet domestic dogs and/or cats, provided an estimate of the size of the owned dog or cat population, collected raw data on dog and cat ownership, and analysed primary data. Data relating to study methodology were extracted and assessed for biases. Results Seven papers were included in the final analysis. Collection methods used to select participants in the included studies were: mailed surveys using a commercial list of contacts, door to door surveys, random digit dialled telephone surveys, and randomised telephone surveys using a commercial list of numbers. Analytical and statistical methods used to estimate the pet population size were: mean number of dogs/cats per household multiplied by the number of households in an area, human density multiplied by number of dogs per human, and calculations using predictors of pet ownership. Conclusion The main biases of the studies included selection bias, non-response bias, measurement bias and biases associated with length of sampling time. Careful design and planning of studies is a necessity before executing a study to estimate pet populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effect of dog and cat contacts on the frequency of respiratory symptoms and infections during the first year of life. METHODS In this birth cohort study, 397 children were followed up from pregnancy onward, and the frequency of respiratory symptoms and infections together with information about dog and cat contacts during the first year of life were reported by using weekly diaries and a questionnaire at the age of 1 year. All the children were born in eastern or middle Finland between September 2002 and May 2005. RESULTS In multivariate analysis, children having dogs at home were healthier (ie, had fewer respiratory tract symptoms or infections) than children with no dog contacts (adjusted odds ratio, [aOR]: 1.31; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13-1.52). Furthermore, children having dog contacts at home had less frequent otitis (aOR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.38-0.81) and tended to need fewer courses of antibiotics (aOR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.52-0.96) than children without such contacts. In univariate analysis, both the weekly amount of contact with dogs and cats and the average yearly amount of contact were associated with decreased respiratory infectious disease morbidity. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that dog contacts may have a protective effect on respiratory tract infections during the first year of life. Our findings support the theory that during the first year of life, animal contacts are important, possibly leading to better resistance to infectious respiratory illnesses during childhood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between pet exposure and the respiratory disease in childhood has been a controversial topic, much is still unknown about the nature of the associations between pet exposure and children's respiratory health stratified by gender and allergic predisposition. The objective of the present study was to assess the relationship between pet exposure and respiratory symptoms in Chinese children, and to investigate the modified effects of gender and allergic predisposition on such relationship. METHODS 31,049 children were selected from 25 districts of 7 cities in Northeast China in 2009. Information on respiratory health and exposure to home environmental factors was obtained via a standard questionnaire designed by the American Thoracic Society. RESULTS Children with an allergic predisposition were found to have more frequent exposure to pets than those without an allergic predisposition (18.5% vs. 15.4%). In children without an allergic predisposition, pet exposure was associated with increased susceptibility to respiratory symptoms/diseases, with girls being more susceptible than boys. No association was found between pet exposure and respiratory symptoms/diseases in boys with an allergic predisposition. In girls with an allergic predisposition, association was found between doctor-diagnosed asthma and pet exposure of their mother during pregnancy (adjusted odds ratio (ORs)=2.03; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-4.33), and their current pet exposure (ORs=1.37; 95%CI: 1.00-1.88). CONCLUSIONS Pet exposure in children without an allergic predisposition was associated with increased susceptibility to respiratory disease, with girls being more susceptible than boys.

Abstract
This review describes the recent literature on microbial exposures and protective effects for asthma and atopy. Certain microorganism-associated molecular patterns have been identified as agents that might influence the development of the immune system, which in turn leads to protective effects for asthma and atopy. Endotoxins from gram-negative bacteria were the first agents associated with a reduced risk for asthma and atopy. In later studies, β(1→3)glucans, extracellular polysaccharides, and muramic acid from, respectively, molds and gram-positive bacteria were associated with a reduced risk of allergy and asthma separately in rural and urban populations. These results already suggested that not just one but several independent microbial signals from gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, as well as molds, might play a role in explaining the protective effects. Recently, the diversity of microbial exposure has been associated with such a reduced risk in farmers' children. Surprisingly, the diversity of both fungal and bacterial exposure seemed to have protective effects. These results open new areas of research and create complex challenges. Methodological issues, such as environmental exposure characterization and assessment and elucidation of potential underlying mechanisms, are discussed because these aspects have a major influence on how microbial diversity can be studied in future studies in relation to protective effects for asthma and atopy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Associations between early life exposure to farm animals and respiratory symptoms and allergy in children have been reported in developed countries, but little is known about such associations in developing countries. OBJECTIVE To study the association between early life exposure to farm animals and symptoms of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema in a worldwide study. METHODS Phase Three of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) was carried out in 6- to 7-year-old children in urban populations across the world. Questions about early life exposure to farm animals (at least once/week) were included in an additional questionnaire. The association between such exposures and symptoms of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema was investigated with logistic regression. Adjustments were made for gender, region of the world, language, gross national income and 10 other subject-specific covariates. RESULTS A positive association was found between early exposure to farm animals and the prevalence of symptoms of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema, especially in non-affluent countries. In these countries, odds ratios (ORs) for 'current wheeze', 'farm animal exposure in the first year of life' and 'farm animal exposure in pregnancy' were 1.27 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12-1.44] and 1.38 (95% CI 1.21-1.58), respectively. The corresponding ORs for affluent countries were 0.96 (95% CI 0.86-1.08) and 0.95 (95% CI 0.84-1.08), respectively. CONCLUSION Exposure to farm animals during pregnancy and in the first year of life was associated with increased symptoms of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema in 6- to 7-year-old children living in non-affluent but not in affluent countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of asthma and allergies in 13- to 14-year-old adolescents in the city of Taubaté, São Paulo, Brazil using the INTERNATIONAL STUDY OF ASTHMA AND ALLERGIES IN CHILDHOOD (ISAAC) questionnaire and to describe the presence of risk factors in current asthma carriers. METHODS We used a cross-sectional study involving 920 adolescents who completed the ISAAC questionnaire and answered additional questions regarding smoking and the presence of pets and/or insects at home. RESULTS The mean prevalence rate of "current asthma" was 15.3% and "asthma ever" was 6.8%. The mean prevalence rate of "current rhinitis" was 36.6% and "rhinitis ever" 37.6%. The prevalence of "eczema ever" was 16.2%. The frequency of active smoking was low (0.7%), and the presence of indoor animals (34%) and of insects (55.1%) was high. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of "current asthma" was twice as high as that of "asthma ever". There was no association between risk factors studied and current asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to indoor allergens is an established risk factor for poor asthma control. Current guidelines recommend removing pets from the home of patients with asthma. OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of furry pet ownership in asthmatics compared to non-asthmatics and to identify factors associated with furry pet ownership among those with asthma. Secondary analysis assessed characteristics among asthmatics that might be associated with allowing a furry pet into the bedroom. METHODS Using data from The National Asthma Survey collected from 2003 to 2004, we carried out univariate and multiple regression analyses, in 2009, to identify independent predictors of furry pet ownership in asthma sufferers after controlling for potential confounders. RESULTS Overall, asthmatics were more likely to own a furry pet than nonasthmatic individuals in the general population (49.9% versus 44.8%, p < .001). Multivariate analysis showed that female sex, older age, white race, and high income were independent predictors of furry pet ownership among asthmatics. Additionally, 68.7% of patients with asthma who own a furry pet allowed them into their bedroom. Higher income and carrying out < or =2 environmental control practices in the home were associated with increased likelihood of allowing a furry pet into the bedroom. CONCLUSIONS Furry pet ownership is equally or more common among asthmatics compared to those without asthma. The majority of asthmatics with furry pets allow them into the bedroom. Recognizing and addressing these problems may help decrease asthma morbidity.

Abstract
Studies have reported contradictory effects of cat and dog exposure on allergy, resulting in inconsistent recommendations on animal avoidance. We conducted a systematic review of observational studies published in English from 2000 to January 2009. It shows in this review that the reported exposure-response relationships are contradictory. A total of 17 and 13 birth cohort studies on cat and dog exposure, respectively, are included in the review. Most of the birth cohort studies found that cat or dog exposure in early life had no effect on the development of asthma or wheezing symptoms and dog exposure during infancy was found to protect children from developing sensitization against aeroallergens. A total of 7 and 6 prospective studies in school-age children or adults on cat and dog exposure, respectively, are included in this review and most of these studies suggested an inverse association between cat exposure and asthma and wheezing symptoms. As for cross-sectional studies, 26 and 21 studies on cat and dog exposure, respectively, are included in this review, which cover a broad range of age groups and geographical areas, and reported inconsistent results. The evidence summarised in this systematic review needs to be interpreted with caution, the inconsistent study results may be due to study design, exposure assessment, and avoidance measure. The exposure-response relationships may also alter in geographical areas where the community prevalence of cats and dogs are significantly different. However, as the evidence of the effects of pet keeping on subsequent development of asthma or allergic diseases presented in this review are not overwhelmingly strong, the decision of whether to keep a cat or a dog in the family should be based on arguments other than the concern of developing asthma and allergy.

Abstract
In Russian population of Siberia asthma is usually concomitant with high sensitization to indoor allergens (cat, dog and house dust mites), overproduction of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and airway hyperreactivity. Definition of genes that predispose to development of various sub-components of the asthma phenotype is important for understanding of etiology of this disease. To map genes predisposing to asthma, we tested 21 microsatellite markers from candidate chromosomal regions in 136 Russian nuclear families with asthma from Siberia. We performed non-parametric analysis for linkage with asthma, total IgE, specific IgE to cat, dog, and dust mites, and spirometric indices (FEV1 (%) - percentage of predicted forced expiratory volume in 1s, FVC (%) - percentage of predicted forced vital capacity, and FEV1/FVC (%) - Tiffenau index). The most significant linkage was to the candidate region on chromosome 12. Locus controlling cat-specific IgE, which is the most abundant in asthma patients from Siberian population, mapped within the interval between 136 and 140 cM on chromosome 12q24.3, with the suggestive linkage at the marker D12S1611 (LOD=2.23, P=0.0007). Total IgE was also linked to this region (D12S1611 - LOD=1.12, P=0.012). FEV1 (%) exceeded LOD>1 threshold for significance with the same locus 12q24.3, but with the peak at a more proximal region at 111.87 cM (D12S338 - LOD=1.21, P=0.009). Some evidence of linkage (LOD>1.0) was also detected for asthma at 6p21.31 (D6S291) and total IgE at 13q14.2 (D13S165). These data indicate that the locus 12q24.3 is the most promising candidate for identification of asthma genes in Russian population of Siberia.
