Abstract
BACKGROUND Ghee, known as "roghane heiwâni," or "Kermanshahi oil" is a traditional fermented butter-like product highly esteemed for its nutritional value. Ghee is prepared using traditional methods and has substantial potential as a reservoir of probiotic microorganisms. Previous research delved into isolating and identifying lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in Kermanshahi through culture and PCR sequencing. This study seeks to elucidate the microbial profiles and diversity within Kermanshahi using culture, Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE), and sequencing methodologies. METHODS Twenty samples of Kermanshahi oil were meticulously gathered from diverse locales across Kermanshah province. These samples were cultivated under specialized conditions in MRS and M17 environments spanning 24 to 72 h. Following DNA extraction, amplification of the 16SrRNA gene sequences was performed, culminating in sequencing for conclusive identification of the isolates. Furthermore, the DGGE technique was directly employed to separate and identify various species present in the oil samples utilizing bioinformatics software. RESULTS Sequencing outcomes revealed a diverse array of microorganisms among the isolates, with Lactobacillus constituting 43%, Streptococcus comprising 27.6%, Enterococcus at 4.61%, and yeasts at 7.6%. Other species exhibited lower frequencies, encompassing Rhizobium, Bacillus coagulans, and Staphylococcus hominis. CONCLUSIONS The isolation of a diverse spectrum of probiotic microorganisms underscores their potential utility in the realm of industrial dairy product production. These findings allude to the possibility of integrating these valuable microorganisms, which have historically been associated with traditional products, into the contemporary dairy industry. As consumer interest in probiotic-enriched products surges, the insights gained from this study pave the way for harnessing the benefits of Kermanshahi-derived probiotics.

Abstract
Cancer remains a global problem, with millions of new cases diagnosed yearly and countless lives lost. The financial burden of cancer therapy, along with worries about the long-term safety of existing medicines, necessitates the investigation of alternative approaches to cancer prevention. Probiotics generate chemopreventive compounds such as bacteriocins, short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which have demonstrated the ability to impede cancer cell proliferation, induce apoptosis, and bolster the expression of pro-apoptotic genes. On the other hand, prebiotics, classified as non-digestible food ingredients, promote the proliferation of probiotics within the colon, thereby ensuring sustained functionality of the gut microbiota. Consequently, the synergistic effect of combining prebiotics with probiotics, known as the synbiotic effect, in dietary interventions holds promise for potentially mitigating cancer risk and augmenting preventive measures. The utilization of gut microbiota in cancer treatment has shown promise in alleviating adverse health effects. This review explored the potential and the role of probiotics and synbiotics in enhancing health and contributing to cancer prevention efforts. In this review, the applications of functional probiotics and synbiotics, the mechanisms of action of probiotics in cancer, and the relationship of probiotics with various drugs were discussed, shedding light on the potential of probiotics and synbiotics to alleviate the burdens of cancer treatment.

Abstract
Fermentation of fruit and vegetable juices with probiotics is a novel nutritional approach with potential health benefits. Lactic acid fermentation-based biotransformation results in changes in the profile and nature of bioactive compounds and improves the organoleptic properties, shelf life and bioavailability of vitamins and minerals in the fermented juices. This process has been shown to enrich the phenolic profile and bioactivity components of the juices, resulting in a new type of functional food with improved health benefits. Fruits and vegetables are the ideal substrate for microbial growth, and fruit and vegetable juice will produce rich nutrients and a variety of functional activities after fermentation, so that the high-quality utilization of fruits and vegetables is realized, and the future fermented fruit and vegetable juice products have a wide application market. This paper explores the typical fermentation methods for fruit and vegetable juices, investigates the bioactive components, functional activities, and the influence of fermentation on enhancing the quality of fruit and vegetable juices. The insights derived from this study carry significant implications for guiding the development of fermented fruit and vegetable juice industry.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the cholesterol lowering ability of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) isolated from human breast milk under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Six LAB isolates namely Lacticaseibacillus casei 1A, Lactobacillus gasseri 5A, Enterococcus faecium 2C, Limosilactobacillus fermentum 3D, Pediococcus acidilactici 1C, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 7A, were examined for their bile resistance, bile salt hydrolase activity, cholesterol assimilation and viability in cholesterol rich; DeMan Rogosa and Sharpe broth, simulated gastric, small and upper intestinal conditions. During in vivo experiments, two putative LAB isolates were orally gavage to BALB/c mice, fed with normal basal and cholesterol rich (HCD) diets, daily for a period of 4 weeks. Blood serum analysis including total serum cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels and total fecal LAB counts of the animals were determined. The isolates in study showed bile resistance and bile salt hydrolysis activity, while significant differences (P < 0.05) were seen in their cholesterol assimilation ability. L. gasseri 5A (195.67%) and L. plantarum 7A (193.78%) displayed highest cholesterol removal percentages, respectively. Animals in HCD, fed with L. gasseri 5A and L. plantarum 7A showed decreased levels of total cholesterol and LDL, compared to the control groups. In HCD group liver weight was increased, while fecal LAB counts were decreased. No changes were observed in behavior or body weight in all experimental groups. In conclusion, L. gasseri 5A and L. plantarum 7A isolated from human breast milk demonstrates significant hypocholesterolaemic actions in vitro and in vivo and might be considered a promising candidates for preventing hypercholesterolemia in man and animals.

Abstract
Cognitive decline and constipation are common complications in the elderly. Probiotics are potential therapeutic agents to ameliorate cognitive impairment through gut-brain axis. Several clinical studies have investigated the beneficial effects of probiotics on cognitive impairment and constipation in elderly. However, a quantitative meta-analysis is required to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics on cognitive function and constipation. Thirteen clinical studies were included in this meta-analysis. We examined the risk of bias assessment and heterogeneity of eight studies for cognition and five studies for constipation, followed by group and subgroup meta-analyses using a random-effects model to evaluate the potential of probiotic supplements on cognition function and constipation in aged people. The results of the pooled meta-analysis revealed that probiotic supplementation did not improve the cognitive rating scale assessment for all studies (estimate = 0.13; 95%CI [-0.18, 0.43]; p = 0.41; I2 = 83.51%). However, subgroup analysis of single strain supplementation showed improved cognitive function in elderly people (estimate = 0.35; 95%CI [0.02, 0.69]; p = 0.039; I2 = 19.19%) compared to multiple strains. Probiotics also enhanced defecation frequency in constipated patients (estimate = 0.27; 95%CI [0.05, 0.5]; p = 0.019; I2 = 67.37%). Furthermore, probiotic supplementation resulted in higher fecal Lactobacillus counts than placebo (estimate = 0.37; 95%CI [0.05, 0.69]; p = 0.026; I2 = 21.3%). Subgroup analysis indicated that a probiotic intervention period of ≥4 weeks was more effective (estimate = 0.35; 95%CI [0.01, 0.68]; p = 0.044; I2 = 0%) in reducing constipation symptoms than a short intervention duration. Based on these results, probiotic supplementation could be a potential intervention to reduce constipation symptoms in the elderly population. The heterogeneity between studies is high, and limited trials are available to evaluate the cognitive function of aged individuals using probiotics. Therefore, further studies are required to determine the effect of probiotics on cognition.

Abstract
In a broad sense, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is a general term for Gram-positive bacteria that can produce lactic acid by utilizing fermentable carbohydrates. It is widely used in essential fields such as industry, agriculture, animal husbandry and medicine. At the same time, LAB are closely related to human health. They can regulate human intestinal flora and improve gastrointestinal function and body immunity. Cancer, a disease in which some cells grow out of control and spread to other body parts, is one of the leading causes of human death worldwide. In recent years, the potential of LAB in cancer treatment has attracted attention. Mining knowledge from the scientific literature significantly accelerates its application in cancer treatment. Using 7794 literature studies of LAB cancer as source data, we have processed 16 543 biomedical concepts and 23 091 associations by using automatic text mining tools combined with manual curation of domain experts. An ontology containing 31 434 pieces of structured data is constructed. Finally, based on ontology, a knowledge graph (KG) database, which is called Beyond 'Lactic acid bacteria to Cancer Knowledge graph Database' (BLAB2CancerKD), is constructed by using KG and web technology. BLAB2CancerKD presents all the relevant knowledge intuitively and clearly in various data presentation forms, and the interactive system function also makes it more efficient. Abstract
Pellet feces are generated by a number of animals important to science or agriculture, including mice, rats, goats, and wombats. Understanding the factors that lead to fecal shape may provide a better understanding of animal health and diet. In this combined experimental and theoretical study, we test the hypothesis that pellet feces are formed by drying processes in the intestine. Inspirational to our work is the formation of hexagonal columnar jointings in cooling lava beds, in which the width L of the hexagon scales as L ∼ J-1 where J is the heat flux from the bed. Across 22 species of mammals, we report a transition from cylindrical to pellet feces if fecal water content drops below 0.65. Using a mathematical model that accounts for water intake rate and intestinal dimensions, we show pellet feces length L scales as L ∼ J-2.08 where J is the flux of water absorbed by the intestines. We build a mimic of the mammalian intestine using a corn starch cake drying in an open trough, finding that corn starch pellet length scales with water flux-0.46. The range of exponents does not permit us to conclude that formation of columnar jointings is similar to the formation of pellet feces. Nevertheless, the methods and physical picture shown here may be of use to physicians and veterinarians interested in using feces length as a marker of intestinal health.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a health problem worldwide, and elevated cholesterol levels are a key risk factor for the disease. Dysbiotic gut microbiota has been shown to be associated with CVD development. However, the beneficial effects of healthy microbiota in decreasing cholesterol levels have not been summarized. Herein, we begin by discussing the potential mechanisms by which the gut microbiota reduces cholesterol levels. We further sketch the application of probiotics from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in reducing cholesterol levels in clinical studies. Finally, we present the cholesterol-lowering function of beneficial commensal microbes, such as Akkermansia and Bacteroides spp., as these microbes have potential to be the next-generation probiotics (NGPs). The information reviewed in this paper will help people to understand how the gut microbiome might alter cholesterol metabolism and enable the development of NGPs to prevent and treat CVD.

Abstract
Recently, the use of synbiotics for managing various diseases has dramatically increased. Synbiotics have been shown to be a good approach to influence the composition of the gut microbiota with positive health effects. Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) complications is one of the reasons for the ingestion of synbiotics and so the aim of the current study was to determine the effects of synbiotic bread intake on markers of lipid profile in T2DM patients. One hundred T2DM patients (age between 20 and 60 years) were randomly assigned to four groups to consume different types of synbiotic bread, three times/day, for 8 weeks: "synbiotic + lactic acid" (n = 25; IV), "synbiotic" (n = 25; III), "lactic acid brad" (n = 25; II), or "control" (n = 25; I). The measured outcomes included anthropometric characteristics, glycemic control parameters, blood lipids, and apolipoproteins. The consumption of "synbiotic + lactic acid bread" (group IV) and "lactic acid bread" (group II) led to a significant decrease in total cholesterol (TC) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) compared to the "control bread." The HbA1c levels were also significantly lower when compared to group II. Additionally, apolipoprotein A (Apo A1) levels were significantly decreased in group IV, compared to control and other groups (post hoc analysis). No significant differences between groups were observed for triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and apolipoprotein B100 (Apo B100) levels. The observed results show that the synbiotic bread (with or without lactic acid) promoted a decrease in total cholesterol (TC) and Apo A1 in diabetic patients when consumed daily for 8 weeks.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests an important role of gut microbiota in physiological processes of host metabolism as well as cardiometabolic disease. Recent advances in metagenomic and metabolomic research have led to discoveries of novel pathways in which intestinal microbial metabolism of dietary nutrients is linked to metabolic profiles and cardiovascular disease risk. A number of metaorganismal circuits have been identified by microbiota transplantation studies and experimental models using germ-free rodents. Many of these pathways involve gut microbiota-related bioactive metabolites that impact host metabolism, in particular lipid and glucose homeostasis, partly via specific host receptors. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of how the gut microbiome can impact cardiometabolic phenotypes and provide an overview of recent advances of gut microbiome research. Finally, the potential of modulating intestinal microbiota composition and/or targeting microbiota-related pathways for novel preventive and therapeutic strategies in cardiometabolic and cardiovascular diseases will be discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dadiah is a traditional dish from West Sumatra made from buffalo milk, which is fermented in bamboo tubes and left at room temperature for ±2 days. Dadiah is included in the staple food category because it contains Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) which has the potential to be a probiotic. This study aims to determine the identification and characterization of LAB from Dadiah from Halaban, Kab. Fifty Cities, West Sumatra. DESIGN AND METHODS A survey method was used in this research with a descriptive analysis, Antimicrobial activity testing was done with bacteria Escherichia coli O157, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Listeria innocua. Molecular identification was done using the 16S rRNA gene. RESULTS Probiotic candidate test with the best results in testing for resistance to stomach acid at pH3 with the viability of 65.98%, bile salt resistance 0.3%, viability of 54.90% from 2DA isolates. Antimicrobial activity with the best clear zone area results was obtained in 2DA isolates with Escherichia coli O157 test bacteria of 21.16 mm, Staphylococcus aureus with a clear zone area of 23.17 mm, Listeria innocua of 19.24 mm and Listeria monocytogenes with a clear zone area 18.23 mm in 4DA isolate, LAB identification using 16S sRNA gene, results of running PCR base length 1419bp. CONCLUSIONS Phylogenetic analysis shows that Dadiah of Limapuluh Kota Regency is a kin to Lactobacillus plantarum. The superiority of identification technology by using 16S rRNA gene only can be conducted if the nucleotide sequence information of the targeted bacteria is known beforehand.

Abstract
As a potential biomarker, there is increasing evidence showing that Fusobacterium nucleatum is positively correlated with the occurrence and development of colorectal cancer. Although antibiotics were expected to eliminate F. nucleatum, the side effects associated with gut microbiotal disorders have to be considered. Here, by performing shotgun metagenomic and transcriptome sequencing, we systematically evaluated the antagonistic effects of probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HNU082 (Lp082) on F. nucleatum in vivo and in vitro. The results showed that the F. nucleatum invasion significantly altered the host intestinal microbiome including the microbial composition, specific species, metabolic pathways and metabolites, as well as impacted the transcriptome of the intestinal epithelial cells. Moreover, the F. nucleatum invasion triggered inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory responses in the intestine but did not develop into colorectal cancer. Excitingly, the Lp082 intervention inhibited the growth of F. nucleatum both in vivo and in vitro and alleviated the inflammatory response introduced by F. nucleatum invasion. Further network-based mechanism exploration demonstrated that Lp082, which negatively correlated to F. nucleatum, maintained the intestinal microbiome homeostasis and prompted the production of beneficial metabolites in the intestine which decreased the expression of inflammatory cytokines in a mouse model. The present research suggested a feasible probiotic intervention strategy for F. nucleatum antagonism in vivo, which may prevent colorectal cancer at the early stage.

Abstract
Aim The naturally fermented yak yogurt of pastoralists in the Tibetan Plateau, China, because of its unique geographical environment and the unique lifestyle of Tibetan pastoralists, is very different from other kinds of sour milk, and the microorganisms it contains are special. Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis HFY14 (LLSL-HFY14) is a new lactic acid bacterium isolated from naturally fermented yak yogurt. The purpose of this study was to study the inhibitory effect of the bacterium on constipation. Methods Constipation was induced in ICR mice with diphenoxylate, and the constipated mice were treated with LLSL-HFY14. The weight and feces of the mice were visually detected. Colonic tissues were observed on hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections. Serum indices were detected with kits. mRNA expression in the colon was determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay. Results Constipation caused weight loss, the number of defecation granules, defecation weight, fecal water content decreased, and the first black stool excretion time increased. LLSL-HFY14 alleviated these symptoms, and the effects were similar to those of lactulose (drug). The pathological examination revealed that constipation caused pathological changes in the colon, and LLSL-HFY14 effectively alleviated the disease. LLSL-HFY14 increased serum levels of motilin, gastrin, endothelin, substance P, acetylcholinesterase, and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and decreased serum levels of somatostatin in constipated mice. In addition, LLSL-HFY14 upregulated VIP, cAMP, protein kinase A, and aquaporin 3 expression in colonic tissues of constipated mice in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion LLSL-HFY14 inhibited constipation, similar to lactulose, and has the potential to become a biological agent.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal inducing a range of adverse effects on organs including liver and kidneys. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of Cd-induced intestinal toxicity through dietary intake is poorly studied. This study evaluated the toxic effects of Cd on intestinal physiology and confirmed the effectiveness of the protective mechanism of the probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum CCFM8610 against chronic Cd toxicity. After treatment with Cd, the HT-29 cell line was subjected to iTRAQ analysis, which revealed that changes in the proteomic profiles after Cd exposure were related to pathways involved in the stress response and carbohydrate metabolism. The results of an animal trial also indicated that 10 weeks of Cd exposure decreased the fecal water content and contractile response of colonic muscle strips in mice, and delayed the excretion time of the first black feces. L. plantarum CCFM8610 treatment provided protective effects against these Cd-induced intestinal motility dysfunctions by recovering the levels of neurotransmitters, including substance P, acetyl cholinesterase, vasoactive intestinal peptide, 5-hydroxytryptamine, calcitonin gene-related peptide, and nitric oxide, and suppressing the cellular stress response in mice (e.g., the inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways). The administration of this probiotic was also observed to reduce Cd levels in the tissues and blood of the mice. Our results suggest a newly identified protective mechanism of probiotics against Cd toxicity that involves the recovery of intestinal motility and increase in fecal cadmium excretion.

Abstract
Simple Summary Cancer is considered one of the leading causes of human mortality in the world and is the subject of much research. The risk of developing cancer depends on genetic factors, as well as the body’s immune status. The intestinal microbiome plays very important role in maintaining homeostasis in the human body. Probiotics have gained increasing medical significance due to the beneficial effect on the human body associated with the prevention and support of the treatment of many chronic diseases, including cancer in the absence of side effects. The aim of this review was to summarize the knowledge about the effect of probiotic microorganisms in the prevention of cancer. There is a lot of evidence that the use of probiotics can play an important role in cancer prevention and support anti-cancer therapies. Abstract The gut microbiome can play important role in maintaining homeostasis in the human body. An imbalance in the gut microbiome can lead to pro-inflammatory immune responses and the initiation of disease processes, including cancer. The research results prove some strains of probiotics by modulating intestinal microbiota and immune response can be used for cancer prevention or/and as adjuvant treatment during anticancer chemotherapy. This review presents the latest advances in research into the effectiveness of probiotics in the prevention and treatment support of cancer. The described issues concern to the anticancer activity of probiotic microorganisms and their metabolites. In addition, we described the potential mechanisms of probiotic chemoprevention and the advisability of using probiotics.

Abstract
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) play a synergistic role with conducting polymer in practical applications such as biological sensing. In this paper, multi-walled carbon nanotube and polypyrrole (PPy) composites were prepared on a fiber surface for the first time, and their morphology and electrical properties were characterized. Compared with PPy-coated fiber, the presence of carbon nanotubes induced the growth of large areas of PPy nanowires. In addition, fiber organic electrochemical transistors (FECTs) based on PPy and MWCNT were assembled, showing a higher on/off ratio, better stability, and greater flexibility. The lactate biosensor based on FECTs exhibits high sensitivity, with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.9889, quick response time of 0.6-0.8 s, a wide linear response range of 1 nM-1 mM, and excellent selectivity for lactate. Furthermore, the lactate concentration in human sweat was successfully detected by a FECT-based sensor. The hybrid fibers can be easily woven and placed on fabric simply by stitching. This favorable performance of the FECT-based sensor makes it suitable for noninvasive sensing of lactate. Therefore, it provides a promising platform for future use in healthcare and detection applications. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Molokhia is highly consumed in Egypt as edible and medicinal plants, and its leaves are used for the treatment of pain, fever, and inflammation. AIM OF THE STUDY High-fat diet (HFD) induces gut dysbiosis, which is closely linked to metabolic diseases including obesity and leaky gut. The effects of molokhia (Corchorus olitorius L.) on anti-obesity and gut health were investigated in this study. MATERIALS AND METHODS The effects of a water-soluble extract from molokhia leaves (WM) on lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and on body weight, gut permeability, hormone levels, fecal enzyme activity of the intestinal microflora, and gut microbiota in HFD-induced C57BL/6J mice were examined. RESULTS WM treatment significantly inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Mice treated with 100 mg/kg WM had 13.1, 52.4, and 17.4% significantly lower body weights, gut permeability, and hepatic lipid accumulation than those in the HFD group, respectively. In addition, WM influenced gut health by inhibiting metabolic endotoxemia and colonic inflammation. It also altered the composition of the gut microbiota; in particular, it increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and decreased that of Desulfovibrio. CONCLUSION Our results extend our understanding of the beneficial effects of WM consumption, including the prevention of gut dysbiosis and obesity.

Abstract
Recent evidence indicates the use of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Probiotics are capable of changing the gut microbiota composition and bile acid synthesis to elicit health benefits such as cholesterol-lowering, weight reduction, and improving insulin sensitivity. The aging population is prone to develop diseases because of their decreased physiological and biological systems. Probiotics are one of the promising supplements that may potentially counteract these detrimental effects. This review will discuss the influence of probiotics on bile acids in different populations-the elderly, obese individuals, and those with hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease mediated by monocyte infiltration and cholesterol deposition into the subendothelial area, resulting in foam cell development. Probiotics are live bacteria that are beneficial for health when administered orally in adequate amounts. In this study, 8-week-old atherosclerosis-prone apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice were fed with or without Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC 14917 per day for 12 weeks. Serum was collected to analyse the lipid profile, oxidative status and proinflammatory cytokines. The heart was isolated to quantify the atherosclerotic lesion size in the aortic arch. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed to determine the expression levels of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin (IL)-1β in the aorta. The proteins extracted from the aorta were used for Western blot analysis to assess the expression levels of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and inhibitor of NF-κB (IκBα). The composition of gut microbiota was also examined through high-throughput sequencing. Results showed that the daily consumption of L. plantarum ATCC 14917 had no effect on body weight and lipid profile. L. plantarum ATCC 14917 treatment significantly inhibited atherosclerotic lesion formation. In addition, the oxLDL, MDA, TNF-α and IL-1β levels were significantly reduced, whereas the SOD level was induced in the bacteria + high-fat diet group. Furthermore, the administration of L. plantarum ATCC 14917 significantly attenuated IκBα protein degradation and inhibited the translocation of P65 subunits of NF-κB. L. plantarum ATCC 14917 treatment also modulated the composition of gut microbiota in ApoE-/- mice. Our findings showed that L. plantarum ATCC 14917 supplementation decreases the progression of atherosclerotic lesion formation by alleviating the inflammatory process and lowering oxidative stress.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oxidative stress is a key contributor to aging and age-related diseases. In the present study, we examine the protective effects of PFT, a novel kefir product, against age-associated oxidative stress using aged (10-month-old) mice. METHODS Mice were treated with PFT orally at a daily dose of 2 mg/kg body weight over 6 weeks, and antioxidant status, protein oxidation, and lipid peroxidation were studied in the brain, liver, and blood. RESULTS PFT supplementation significantly reduced the oxidative stress biomarkers malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide; reversed the reductions in glutathione (GSH) levels, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and anti-hydroxyl radical (AHR) content; enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD); inhibited the liver enzyme levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT); significantly reduced triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels; and significantly elevated high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Interestingly, PFT supplementation reversed the oxidative changes associated with aging, thus bringing levels to within the limits of the young control mice in the brain, liver, and blood. We also note that PFT affects the redox homeostasis of young mice and that it is corrected post-treatment with PFT. CONCLUSION Our findings show the effectiveness of dietary PFT supplementation in modulating age-associated oxidative stress in mice and motivate further studies of PFT's effects in reducing age-associated disorders where free radicals and oxidative stress are the major cause.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of probiotic bacteria of Lactobacillus acidophilus, cinnamon powder and their combinations on the glycemic and antioxidant indices in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods A total of 136 patients randomized with type 2 diabetes entered the study and were randomly divided into four groups who were matched for age and gender. Thereafter, alongside their routine pharmacotherapy, each group followed one of the following diets: Group A: Lactobacillus acidophilus 108 cfu and 0.5 g of powdered cinnamon (synbiotic). Group B: Lactobacillus acidophilus (probiotic), Group C: powdered cinnamon. Group D: rice flour powder as placebo. At the beginning and end of the intervention, fasting blood sugar (FBS), HbA1c, advance glycation end products (AGE), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and antioxidant enzymes of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) were measured. Results Following 3 months of treatment, the mean FBS level was decreased significantly in probiotic, cinnamon, and synbiotic supplementation groups compared with control (P < 0.01). FBS levels in probiotic, cinnamon, and synbiotic groups were significantly decreased compared with the control group (P = 0.001, P = 0.063 and P = 0.001, respectively). The mean HbA1C in probiotic, cinnamon, and synbiotic groups were also decreased (P = 0.001, P = 0.001 and P = 0.04, respectively). The mean AGE in synbiotic group was significantly decreased (P = 0.037). Probiotic, cinnamon and synbiotic all could improve antioxidant enzyme activity modestly. However, the most significant effect was seen in probiotic group. Conclusions According to the current results, the use of probiotic supplements (individually or in combination with cinnamon) leads to a reduction in blood glucose and an increase in antioxidant enzymes in people with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a nondairy fermented product based on mango slurry. Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae DV10 were used as starter cultures in single and co-cultivations. The microbial populations and metabolites produced during mango slurry fermentation were investigated. At the end of all fermentations, the bacterial populations were higher than 6.0 log CFU/mL. Lactic acid was the main organic acid produced, achieving up to 6.12 g/L after 24 h in co-culture with L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae DV10. Volatile compounds were determined after 24 h of fermentation, the co-cultures of L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae DV10 could decrease terpenes and produce alcohols and esters. The co-cultivations obtained the most total phenolics as well as showed the strongest 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation inhibition. Hence, a high-bioactivity probiotic product was successfully obtained via mango slurry fermentation inoculated with a co-culture of L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae DV10.

Abstract
The current research project was undertaken to explore the therapeutic potential of two potent probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum strains, i.e., PD2 and PH5 in a hyperlipemic healthy adult Wistar rat model, with a particular focus as biotherapeutics for the management of high cholesterol in Indian population. Rats fed on cholesterol-enriched diet supplemented with potential probiotics strain Lactobacillus fermentum PH5 significantly affected serum lipid profile by reducing serum cholesterol (67.21%), triglycerides level (66.21%), and LDL cholesterol level (63.25%) in comparison to rats that received cholesterol-enriched diet (Model) only. Both the strains decreased the cholesterol levels in liver compared with Model group, but PH5 was found to be more effective (30.65% reduction) in liver total cholesterol (TC) lowering action. In addition, the fecal coliforms were significantly reduced besides increased LAB in feces of rats receiving probiotic curd having Lactobacillus fermentum PH5. Our results demonstrated that supplementation with either of the two strains was efficient in reducing serum cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG concentrations in rats compared to those fed the same high-cholesterol diet but without LAB supplementation.

Abstract
Mango slurries were fermented with 6 different probiotic microorganisms (Lactobacillus plantarum, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Saccharomyces cerevisiae D254, S. cerevisiae DV10, and S. cerevisiae R2) to develop products with higher bioactivity. Changes in pH, reducing sugars, organic acids, and volatile compounds were determined. In addition, total phenolics and antioxidant capacity during fermentation were monitored. Among the strains used, S. cerevisiae D254 exhibited the fastest utilization of sugar in a mango slurry. Different volatile compounds were produced, mainly consisting of fatty acids, alcohols, and esters. S. cerevisiae DV10 produced higher amounts of esters and alcohols. The antioxidant capacity of the mango slurries improved by different degrees after fermentation with the six probiotic microorganisms. Fermentation with L. plantarum obtained the most organic acids as well as total phenolics and exhibited the highest FRAP and CUPRAC values. The results of this study indicated that fermentation with probiotic microorganisms can enhance the health benefits obtained from mango slurries. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Probiotic-fermented mango slurry is a fermentation product that combines the nutritional value of mango with the health benefits of probiotics. Probiotic fermentation improves the flavor of a mango slurry and increases the availability and variety of mango products that can be appreciated by consumers.

Abstract
Tomato juice was fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei to produce an innovative high-bioactivity probiotic beverage. The levels of lycopene, total carotenoids, ascorbic acid, total phenolic and volatile compounds, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2’-azinobis-3-ethylbenzotiazo-line-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging capacities, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and Escherichia coli flora, as well as the inhibition of copper-induced human low-density lipoproteins (LDL)-cholesterol oxidation assays, were measured. The results revealed that the ABTS and DPPH inhibition values, as well as the FRAP and total phenolic content, were significantly increased. LDL-cholesterol oxidation was markedly delayed after the addition of the fermented juice. The in vitro inhibitory effects of Escherichia coli flora were substantially increased after being fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei. The results associated with the volatile compounds indicated that fermentation with Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei is a meaningful strategy for modifying flavors.

Abstract
Cancer remains one of the most common causes of mortality globally. Chemotherapy, one of the major treatment strategies for cancer, primarily functions by targeting the cancer cells and affecting them physiologically, but also affects normal cells, which is a major concern at present. Therefore, adverse effects of chemotherapy drugs, including myelosuppression and liver and kidney damage, are of concern. Now, microbial products have attracted attention in cancer treatment research. Notably, carcinogenesis is considered to be associated with microbial dysbiosis, particularly the positive antitumor effects of bifidobacteria. Although there remains a substantial amount to be understood about the regulation of bifidobacteria, bifidobacteria remain an attractive and novel source of cancer therapeutics. The present review focuses on introducing the latest information on the antitumor effects of bifidobacteria and to propose future strategies for using bifidobacteria in the development of cancer therapeutics.

Abstract
Arteriosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and its risk can be independently decreased by regular physical activity. Recently, ASCVD and its risk factors were found to be impacted by the gut microbiota through its diversity, distribution and metabolites. Meanwhile, several experiments demonstrated the relationship between physical exercise and diversity, distribution, metabolite of the gut microbiota as well as its functions on the lipid metabolism and chronic systematic inflammation. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the effects of physical exercise on ASCVD through modulation of the gut microbiota and intestinal function.

Abstract
Diet1 modulates intestinal production of the hormone, fibroblast growth factor (FGF)15, which signals in liver to regulate bile acid synthesis. C57BL/6ByJ mice with a spontaneous Diet1-null mutation are resistant to hypercholesterolemia compared with wild-type C57BL/6J mice through enhanced cholesterol conversion to bile acids. To further characterize the role of Diet1 in metabolism, we generated Diet1-/- mice on the C57BL/6J genetic background. C57BL/6J Diet1-/- mice had elevated bile acid levels, reduced Fgf15 expression, and increased gastrointestinal motility and intestinal luminal water content, which are symptoms of bile acid diarrhea (BAD) in humans. Natural genetic variation in Diet1 mRNA expression levels across 76 inbred mouse strains correlated positively with Ffg15 mRNA and negatively with serum bile acid levels. This led us to investigate the role of DIET1 genetic variation in primary BAD patients. We identified a DIET1 coding variant (rs12256835) that had skewed prevalence between BAD cases and controls. This variant causes an H1721Q amino acid substitution that increases the levels of FGF19 protein secreted from cultured cells. We propose that genetic variation in DIET1 may be a determinant of FGF19 secretion levels, and may affect bile acid metabolism in both physiological and pathological conditions.

Abstract
Lactobacillus helveticus KLDS1.8701 isolated from Chinese traditional fermented dairy product has been shown earlier to possess probiotic potentials but it is important to evaluate its safety in view of its possible use as a probiotic. The aim of the present study is to critically assess the safety of L. helveticus KLDS1.8701 through multiple perspectives. The complete genome of L. helveticus KLDS1.8701 was sequenced to mine for safety-associated genes. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of 15 antimicrobials and the adverse metabolites were determined. Standard acute oral and subacute toxicity studies were conducted in rats. The results in silico disclosed that the genome of L. helveticus KLDS1.8701 carries no transferable antibiotic resistance genes, no virulence factors and only 3 genes related to adverse metabolites. In vitro results showed that L. helveticus KLDS1.8701 was resistant against 6 antimicrobials and did not raise safety concerns about biogenic amine, D-lactic acid and nitroreductase. The results in vivo revealed that no adverse effects on experimental rats were observed in the oral toxicity tests. Overall, findings from this study suggest that L. helveticus KLDS1.8701 is safe and can be used as a potential probiotic for human consumption.

Abstract
Consumption of reishi mushroom has been reported to prevent colon carcinogenesis in rodents, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To investigate this effect, rats were fed a high-fat diet supplemented with 5% water extract from either the reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lingzhi) (WGL) or the auto-digested reishi G. lingzhi (AWGL) for three weeks. Both extracts markedly reduced fecal secondary bile acids, such as lithocholic acid and deoxycholic acid (colon carcinogens). These extracts reduced the numbers of Clostridium coccoides and Clostridium leptum (secondary bile acids-producing bacteria) in a per g of cecal digesta. Fecal mucins and cecal propionate were significantly elevated by both extracts, and fecal IgA was significantly elevated by WGL, but not by AWGL. These results suggest that the reishi extracts have an impact on colon luminal health by modulating secondary bile acids, microflora, mucins, and propionate that related to colon cancer.

Abstract
During the last few decades we have become accustomed to the idea that viruses can cause tumors. It is much less considered and discussed, however, that most people infected with oncoviruses will never develop cancer. Therefore, the genetic and environmental factors that tip the scales from clearance of viral infection to development of cancer are currently an area of active investigation. Microbiota has recently emerged as a potentially critical factor that would affect this balance by increasing or decreasing the ability of viral infection to promote carcinogenesis. In this review, we provide a model of microbiome contribution to the development of oncogenic viral infections and viral associated cancers, give examples of this process in human tumors, and describe the challenges that prevent progress in the field as well as their potential solutions.

Abstract
FaeG is the major subunit of K88 fimbriae. These cell surface attachments are considered to be the major virulence factor of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), which causes diarrhoea in piglets. The use of dendritic cell-targeting peptide (DCpep) has been demonstrated to be an effective approach to enhance the immunity of vaccines. Lactobacillus plantarum is an attractive candidate for oral vaccination owing to its beneficial effects and safety. In this study, L. plantarum was employed to deliver a FaeG-DCpep fusion antigen, and the immune response in mice was evaluated. The synthesis of FaeG-DCpep dramatically increased the adhesion of recombinant L. plantarum (RLP) to IPEC-J2 cell surfaces, resulting in direct competition between L. plantarum and ETEC during adhesion assays. Significantly higher levels of body weight gain, sera immunoglobulin G and intestinal immunoglobulin A were observed in BALB/c mice immunised with RLP. In addition, the number of CD19+ B cells and CD11c+DC cells and the expression levels of several cytokines in the spleen and lymph nodes increased significantly compared to non-immunised mice. The oral administration of RLP also alleviated the symptoms of ETEC challenge, as shown by haematoxylin-eosin staining, indicating that RLP may be an efficient vaccine candidate.

Abstract
The ban or severe restriction on the use of antibiotics in poultry feeds to promote growth has led to considerable interest to find alternative approaches. Probiotics have been considered as such alternatives. In the present study, the effects of a Lactobacillus mixture composed from three previously isolated Lactobacillus salivarius strains (CI1, CI2 and CI3) from chicken intestines on performance, intestinal health status and serum lipids of broiler chickens has been evaluated. Supplementation of the mixture at a concentration of 0.5 or 1 g kg-1 of diet to broilers for 42 days improved body weight, body weight gain and FCR, reduced total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, increased populations of beneficial bacteria such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, decreased harmful bacteria such as E. coli and total aerobes, reduced harmful cecal bacterial enzymes such as β-glucosidase and β-glucuronidase, and improved intestinal histomorphology of broilers. Because of its remarkable efficacy on broiler chickens, the L. salivarius mixture could be considered as a good potential probiotic for chickens, and its benefits should be further evaluated on a commercial scale.

Abstract
CVD affect a large proportion of the world's population, with dyslipidaemia as the major risk factor. The regular consumption of both probiotic bacteria and yeast has been associated with improvement in the serum lipid profile. Thus, the present review aims to describe and discuss the potential mechanisms responsible for the hypocholesterolaemic effect of regular consumption of probiotic bacteria and yeast. Regarding the hypocholesterolaemic effect of probiotic bacteria, the potential mechanisms responsible include: deconjugation of bile salts; modulation of lipid metabolism; and decreased absorption of intestinal cholesterol through co-precipitation of intestinal cholesterol with the deconjugated bile salts, incorporation and assimilation of cholesterol in the cell membrane of the probiotics, intestinal conversion of cholesterol in coprostanol, and inhibition of the expression of the intestinal cholesterol transporter Niemann-Pick C1 like 1 (NPC1L1) in the enterocytes. The potential mechanisms responsible for the hypocholesterolaemic effect of probiotic yeasts include: deconjugation of bile salts; co-precipitation of intestinal cholesterol with the deconjugated bile salts; incorporation and assimilation of cholesterol in the cell membrane; and inhibition of hepatic cholesterol synthesis. The regular consumption of probiotic bacteria and yeast, as a non-pharmaceutical approach to help manage cardiovascular risk, holds promise, according to the beneficial hypocholesterolaemic effects described herein. However, the hypocholesterolaemic effects vary according to the strains used, the physiological state of the host, and the type of diet to which the probiotics are added. Further studies are necessary to fill the gaps with regard to the knowledge related to this topic.

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate bifidobacteria flora in fecal
samples from children with rotavirus infection and determine the significance of
their selected probiotic properties for improvement of health status. Enzyme-linked
immunosorbent assay was used to identify rotavirus antigen in fecal samples from 94
patients with gastroenteritis and from 30 without gastroenteritis. Bifidobacteria
were identified by selective media, gram reaction, colony morphology,
fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase enzyme activity and classical identification
tests. Exopolysaccharide (EPS) production was identified by phenol-sulphuric acid
method. The modified method was then used to identify the quantity of taurocholic and
glycocholic acid deconjugation and cholesterol elimination of the strains.
Thirty-five of the 94 fecal samples were found positive for rotavirus antigen
(37.23%). Bifidobacteria were identified in 59 of the samples. The EPS production
ranges were 29.56-102.21 mg/L. The cholesterol elimination rates ranged between
8.36-39.22%. Furthermore, a positive and strong correlation was determined between
EPS production and the presence of cholesterol (r=0.984,
P<0.001). The deconjugation rates for the sodium glycocholate group was higher
than the sodium taurocholate group. Rotavirus (+) bifidobacteria strains had higher
EPS production, deconjugation rate and cholesterol elimination compared to
bifidobacteria strains isolated from children in the rotavirus (-) sample and without
gastroenteritis. Significant differences were observed among groups in all parameters
(P<0.05). Given the increased number of rotavirus cases in Turkey and worldwide,
it is very important to add superior bifidobacteria in the diets of infected children
to improve the intestinal and vital functions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was performed to determine the effects of probiotic supplementation on clinical and metabolic status of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS Sixty patients with RA aged 25-70 years were assigned into two groups to receive either probiotic capsules (n = 30) or placebo (n = 30) in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The patients in the probiotic group received a daily capsule that contained three viable and freeze-dried strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus (2 × 10(9) colony-forming units [CFU]/g), Lactobacillus casei (2 × 10(9) CFU/g) and Bifidobacterium bifidum (2 × 10(9) CFU/g) for 8 weeks. The placebo group took capsules filled with cellulose for the same time period. Fasting blood samples were taken at the beginning and the end of the study to quantify related markers. RESULTS After 8 weeks of intervention, compared with the placebo, probiotic supplementation resulted in improved Disease Activity Score of 28 joints (DAS-28) (-0.3 ± 0.4 vs. -0.1 ± 0.4, P = 0.01). In addition, a significant decrease in serum insulin levels (-2.0 ± 4.3 vs. +0.5 ± 4.9 μIU/mL, P = 0.03), homeostatic model assessment-B cell function (HOMA-B) (-7.5 ± 18.0 vs. +4.3 ± 25.0, P = 0.03) and serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) concentrations (-6.66 ± 2.56 vs. +3.07 ± 5.53 mg/L, P < 0.001) following the supplementation of probiotics compared with the placebo. Subjects who received probiotic capsules experienced borderline statistically significant improvement in total- (P = 0.09) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels (P = 0.07) compared with the placebo. CONCLUSION Overall, the results of this study indicated that taking probiotic supplements for 8 weeks among patients with RA had beneficial effects on DAS-28, insulin levels, HOMA-B and hs-CRP levels.

Abstract
Background Traditional fermented cheese whey (TFCW), containing probiotics, has been used both as a dairy food with ethnic flavor and a medicine for cardiovascular disease, especially regulating blood lipid among Kazakh. We therefore investigated anti-atherosclerotic effects of TFCW in atherosclerotic rabbits and identified lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts in TFCW. Methods Atherosclerotic rabbits were induced by administration of atherosclerotic diet for 12 weeks and divided randomly into three groups and treated for 4 weeks with Simvastatin (20 mg/kg) or TFCW (25 mg/kg) and (50 mg/kg). In addition, a normal control group and an atherosclerotic group were used for comparison. All drugs were intragastrical administered once daily 10 mL/kg for 4 weeks. Body weight (BW), lipid profiles, C-reactive protein (CRP), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) were tested and theromatous plaques and the number of foam cells and infiltrating fibroblast cells in the thoracic aorta endothelium was evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin stainin. LAB and yeasts were isolated and purified by conventional techniques and identified using morphological and biochemical properties as well as gene sequences analysis. Results After 4 weeks of treatment, high and low dose TFCW decreased serum TC, TG, LDLC, CRP, VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 (P < 0.05) compared to atherosclerotic group, and increased HDL-C (P < 0.05) compared to normal controls. Histological analysis showed TFCW reduced VCAM-1 expression and formation of atheromatous plaques on the aortic endothelium of atherosclerotic rabbits. Conclusion Seven classes of LBA from two different genera including Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus kefianofaciens, Lactobacillus helveticus, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus kefiri and Lactococcus lactic as well as 2 classes of yeasts from two different genera including Saccharomyces unisporus and Issatchenkia orientalis were isolated and identified from TFCW. In summary, TFCW, containing 7 classes of LBA and 2 classes of yeasts, has significant anti-atherosclerotic potential in atherosclerotic rabbits and may modulate lipid metabolism and protect aorta in the atherosclerotic condition, which might be related to various probiotics acting through reducing the CRP, VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 levels and protecting the aortic endothelium.

Abstract
Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems are widespread in bacteria and archaea. However, the roles of chromosomally encoded TA systems in bacterial physiology are still open to debate. In this study, a TA module-relBE in Bifidobacterium longum JDM301 (relBE(Bif)) was identified and its function in stress response was evaluated. Bioinformatics analysis of the whole genome sequences of JDM301 revealed a pair of linked genes encoding a RelBE-like TA system (RelBE(Bif)). Our results revealed a bicistronic operon formed by relBE(Bif) in JDM301. Over-expression of RelE(Bif) had a toxic effect on Escherichia coli, which could be neutralized by co-expression of its cognate antitoxin, RelB(Bif) Our data also demonstrated that RelE(Bif) is an mRNA interferase and that the activity of RelE(Bif) can be inhibited by RelB(Bif) These results suggest that RelE(Bif) is a toxic nuclease which arrests cell growth through mRNA degradation, and that the activity of RelE(Bif) can be abolished by co-expression of RelB(Bif) In addition, we also found that the expression of RelBE(Bif) is increased during osmotic stress, suggesting that RelBE(Bif) is activated under this adverse condition. Our results imply that the RelBE(Bif) TA module may represent a cell growth modulator which helps B. longum to deal with osmotic stress.

Abstract
Two previously isolated Lactobacillus strains (L. fermentum HM3 from human milk and L. buchneri FD2 from fermented dates), intended as probiotic for human, were assessed for their safety using acute and subacute oral toxicity tests in rats. In addition, their effects on cecal microflora and harmful bacterial enzymes (β-glucuronidase and β-glucosidase) of the tested animals were also determined. The results showed that L. buchneri FD2, L. fermentum HM3, or a mixture of them were safe up to a level of 1010 CFU/kg BW/day in a 14-day or 28-day treatment period. Both strains were well tolerated and there were no observed adverse effects on growth, feed consumption, cellular blood components and vital organs of the treated animals. The Lactobacillus strains were also able to reduce harmful intestinal bacterial enzymes, and decrease pathogenic bacterial populations while increasing beneficial bacterial populations. These results suggest that the two Lactobacillus strains are safe and could be potential probiotic for human.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Probiotics have been suggested as prophylactic measure in colon carcinogenesis. This study aimed at determining the potential prophylactic activity of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG CGMCC 1.2134 (LGG) strain on colorectal carcinogenesis via measuring its effect on Nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) inflammatory pathway and apoptosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS 64 Sprague Dawley rats were grouped into four as follows; Group 1 (Healthy control), Group 2 (LGG), Group 3 (cancer control Dimethyl hydrazine (DMH)) and Group 4 (LGG+DMH). LGG was administered orally to LGG and LGG+DMH groups. Colon carcinogenesis was chemically induced in LGG+DMH and DMH groups by weekly injection of 40mg/kg DMH. Animals were sacrificed after 25 weeks of experiment and tumor characteristics assessed. The change in expression of NFκB-p65, COX-2, TNFα, Bcl-2, Bax, iNOS, VEGFα, β-catenin, Casp3 and p53 were evaluated by western blotting and qRT-PCR. RESULTS LGG treatment significantly reduced tumor incidence, multiplicity and volume in LGG+DMH treatment group compared to DMH cancer control group. Also, LGG treatment reduced the expression of β-catenin and the inflammatory proteins NFκB-p65, COX-2 and TNFα; the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2, but increased the expression of the pro-apoptotic proteins Bax, casp3 and p53 compared with DMH group. CONCLUSION LGG have a potential protection effect against colon carcinogenesis; inducing apoptosis and ameliorating inflammation, and may hold a promise as bio-therapeutic dietary agent.

Abstract
By autoclaving, we obtained a polyphenol and dietary fiber from pea (Pisum sativum L.) pods in parallel without acid or alkali treatment or organic solvent extraction. Rats fed a high-sucrose (HS) diet containing 3% autoclaved extract (AE) for 4 wk exhibited significantly lower serum triglyceride and total cholesterol levels than rats fed a HS diet. AE and soluble dietary fiber (SDF) from AE exhibited pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity at 13.3 mg/mL in vitro. AE and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) from AE adsorbed cholesterol. In total, 30% and 10% of a cholesterol micelle were significantly adsorbed by 2,000 mg of AE and 100 mg of IDF from AE in 7 mL, respectively. The amount of bifidobacteria in the cecum of the AE group was significantly increased compared with that in the HS group. These results suggest that AE has hypolipidemic, bifidogenic potential.

Abstract
‘Manda Koso’ is a commercial fermented plant product (FPP) made from 53 types of fruits and vegetables that have been fermented for >3 years and 3 months. We hypothesized that FPP intake improves the luminal environment of rats fed a high-fat diet. Thus, the present study examined the effects of consumption of 5% FPP diet for 3 weeks on colonic luminal parameters in rats fed a 30% beef tallow diet. Food intake and body weight gain were unaffected. Consumption of the FPP diet did not influence the proportions of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, Prevotella or Clostridium in cecal contents. However, the FPP diet caused a significant reduction (−88%) in the level of cecal succinate, a putative inflammatory signal (P<0.01), but did not affect the levels of n-butyrate, propionate, acetate and lactate. The fecal levels of deoxycholate and hyodeoxycholate, which are toxic bile acids, were also significantly reduced by the FPP diet (P<0.05). The FPP diet significantly increased fecal immunoglobulin A and mucins responsible for intestinal immune and barrier functions (P<0.05). The results suggest that the consumption of FPP is beneficial for the colonic luminal environment in rats fed a high-fat diet.

Abstract
Introduction Recent experimental and clinical studies have suggested that probiotic supplementation has beneficial effects on serum lipid profiles. However, there are conflicting results on the efficacy of probiotic preparations in reducing serum cholesterol. Objective To evaluate the effects of probiotics on human serum lipid levels, we conducted a meta-analysis of interventional studies. Methods Eligible reports were obtained by searches of electronic databases. We included randomized, controlled clinical trials comparing probiotic supplementation with placebo or no treatment (control). Statistical analysis was performed with Review Manager 5.3.3. Subanalyses were also performed. Results Eleven of 33 randomized clinical trials retrieved were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. No participant had received any cholesterol-lowering agent. Probiotic interventions (including fermented milk products and probiotics) produced changes in total cholesterol (TC) (mean difference –0.17 mmol/L, 95% CI: –0.27 to –0.07 mmol/L) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (mean difference –0.22 mmol/L, 95% CI: –0.30 to –0.13 mmol/L). High-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels did not differ significantly between probiotic and control groups. In subanalysis, long-term (>4-week) probiotic intervention was statistically more effective in decreasing TC and LDL-C than short-term (≤4-week) intervention. The decreases in TC and LDL-C levels with probiotic intervention were greater in mildly hypercholesterolemic than in normocholesterolemic individuals. Both fermented milk product and probiotic preparations decreased TC and LDL-C levels. Gaio and the Lactobacillus acidophilus strain reduced TC and LDL-C levels to a greater extent than other bacterial strains. Conclusions In conclusion, this meta-analysis showed that probiotic supplementation could be useful in the primary prevention of hypercholesterolemia and may lead to reductions in risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Background
Lactic fermentation of foods increases the availability of iron as shown in a number of studies throughout the years. Several explanations have been provided such as decreased content of inhibitory phytate, increased solubility of iron, and increased content of lactic acid in the fermented product. However, to our knowledge, there are no data to support that the bioavailability of iron is affected by lactic fermentation.
Objectives The objective of the present study was to investigate whether the bioavailability of iron from a vegetable mix was affected by lactic fermentation and to propose a mechanism for such an event, by conducting human and cell (Caco-2, HepG2) studies and iron speciation measurements (voltammetry). We also investigated whether the absorption of zinc was affected by the lactic fermentation. Results In human subjects, we observed that lactic-fermented vegetables served with both a high-phytate and low-phytate meal increased the absorption of iron, but not zinc. In vitro digested fermented vegetables were able to provoke a greater hepcidin response per ng Fe than fresh vegetables, indicating that Fe in the fermented mixes was more bioavailable, independent on the soluble Fe content. We measured that hydrated Fe3+ species were increased after the lactic fermentation, while there was no significant change in hydrated Fe2+. Furthermore, lactate addition to Caco-2 cells did not affect ferritin formation in response to Fe nor did lactate affect the hepcidin response in the Caco-2/HepG2 cell system. Conclusions The mechanism for the increased bioavailability of iron from lactic-fermented vegetables is likely an effect of the increase in ferric iron (Fe3+) species caused by the lactic fermentation. No effect on zinc bioavailability was observed.
