Size dependence of the magnetic properties of Ni nanoparticles prepared by thermal decomposition method

Influence of shock waves on bifunctional nickel particles: Enhancing magnetic properties and supercapacitor applications

In the present study, shock-wave impact experiments were conducted to investigate the structural properties of nickel metal powder when exposed to shock waves. Both X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate the structural and surface morphological changes in the shock-loaded samples. Notably, the experimental results revealed variations in lattice parameters and cell structures as a function of the number of shock pulses and the increasing volume. The transition occurred from P2 (100 shocks) to P3 (200 shocks). Remarkably, P5 (400 shocks) exhibited attempts to return to its initial state, and intriguingly, P4 displayed characteristics reminiscent of the pre-shock condition. Additionally, significant morphological changes were observed with an increase in shock pulses. Magnetic measurements revealed an increase in magnetic moment for P2, P3, and P4, but a return to the original state was observed for P5. Moreover, the capacitance exhibited an upward trend with increasing shock pulses, except for P5, where it experienced a decline. These findings underscore the significant impact of even mild shock waves on the physical and chemical characteristics of bifunctional nickel particles. This research sheds light on the potential applications of shock wave-induced structural changes in enhancing the magnetic properties and supercapacitor performance of nickel particles.

Interfacial negative magnetization in Ni encapsulated layer-tunable nested MoS2 nanostructure with robust memory applications

Combining interfacial interactions and layer-number tunability, the evolution of magnetism in low-dimensional diamagnetic systems like MoS2 is indeed an interesting area of research. To explore this, Ni nanophases with an average size of 12 nm were encapsulated in MoS2 and the magnetization dynamics were studied over the temperature range of 2-300 K. Surprisingly, the newly formed hybrid nanostructure was found to have a negative magnetization state with giant exchange bias that showed a reversible temperature-induced increase in both spin magnetic moment and coercivity. Density functional theory calculations proved an interfacial charge transfer interaction with a spin-polarized density of states. The magnetization state, along with giant exchange correlation among the magnetic clusters, suggested the possibility of robust thermomagnetic memory. The dc magnetization and relaxation, investigated with different measurement protocols, unveiled robust thermoremanent magnetization as a memory effect. The time-dependent magnetization study indicated that contributions from the negative magnetization state along with charge transfer induced spin states are responsible for the memory effect, which can be controlled by both temperature and external field.

Exchange Coupling Effects on the Magnetotransport Properties of Ni-Nanoparticle-Decorated Graphene

We characterize the effect of ferromagnetic nickel nanoparticles (size ∼6 nm) on the magnetotransport properties of chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) graphene. The nanoparticles were formed by thermal annealing of a thin Ni film evaporated on top of a graphene ribbon. The magnetoresistance was measured while sweeping the magnetic field at different temperatures, and compared against measurements performed on pristine graphene. Our results show that, in the presence of Ni nanoparticles, the usually observed zero-field peak of resistivity produced by weak localization is widely suppressed (by a factor of ∼3), most likely due to the reduction of the dephasing time as a consequence of the increase in magnetic scattering. On the other hand, the high-field magnetoresistance is amplified by the contribution of a large effective interaction field. The results are discussed in terms of a local exchange coupling, J∼6 meV, between the graphene π electrons and the 3d magnetic moment of nickel. Interestingly, this magnetic coupling does not affect the intrinsic transport parameters of graphene, such as the mobility and transport scattering rate, which remain the same with and without Ni nanoparticles, indicating that the changes in the magnetotransport properties have a purely magnetic origin.

A New Class of Cluster-Matrix Nanocomposite Made of Fully Miscible Components

Nanocomposite materials, consisting of two or more phases, at least one of which has a nanoscale dimension, play a distinctive role in materials science because of the multiple possibilities for tailoring their structural properties and, consequently, their functionalities. In addition to the challenges of controlling the size, size distribution, and volume fraction of nanometer phases, thermodynamic stability conditions limit the choice of constituent materials. This study goes beyond this limitation by showing the possibility of achieving nanocomposites from a bimetallic system, which exhibits complete miscibility under equilibrium conditions. A series of nanocomposite samples with different compositions are synthesized by the co-deposition of 2000-atom Ni-clusters and a flux of Cu-atoms using a novel cluster ion beam deposition system. The retention of the metastable nanostructure is ascertained from atom probe tomography (APT), magnetometry, and magnetotransport studies. APT confirms the presence of nanoscale regions with ≈100 at% Ni. Magnetometry and magnetotransport studies reveal superparamagnetic behavior and magnetoresistance stemming from the single-domain ferromagnetic Ni-clusters embedded in the Cu-matrix. Essentially, the magnetic properties of the nanocomposites can be tailored by the precise control of the Ni concentration. The initial results offer a promising direction for future research on nanocomposites consisting of fully miscible elements.

Multifunctional tunable ZnFe2O4@MnFe2O4 nanoparticles for dual-mode MRI and combined magnetic hyperthermia with radiotherapy treatment

With the increase in non-communicable diseases, cancer is becoming one of the most lethal ailments of the coming decades. Significant progress has been made in the development of NPs that combine diagnostic and therapeutic properties in a single system. Multimodal NPs that sequentially perform MRI diagnostics with increased contrast and then act as synergistic agents for magnetic hyperthermia and radiotherapy can be considered as next-generation anticancer drugs. Thus, we propose a systematic study of composite theranostic ZnFe₂O₄@MnFe₂O₄ NPs for the first time. Two types of magnetic NPs with MnFe₂O₄ shell thicknesses of 0.5 (ZM0.5) and 1.7 nm (ZM3) were prepared via hydrothermal synthesis. Tuning the shell thickness was shown to influence the NP r₂ and r₁ relaxivities and allow T₁-T₂ dual-mode contrast agents to be obtained. A radiotherapy study demonstrated a significant dose factor enhancement (about 40%) for both NP types. The specific absorption rate of ZM3 in a 100 Oe alternating magnetic field with a frequency of 75 kHz was found to be 8 W g^-1, which results in heating up to 42 °C within a few seconds. This work presents high-performance multifunctional NPs capable of combining different diagnostic and therapeutic methods for a full course of treatment using only one type of NP.

Three Approaches for Representing the Statistical Uncertainty on Atom-Counting Results in Quantitative ADF STEM

A decade ago, a statistics-based method was introduced to count the number of atoms from annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF STEM) images. In the past years, this method was successfully applied to nanocrystals of arbitrary shape, size, and composition (and its high accuracy and precision has been demonstrated). However, the counting results obtained from this statistical framework are so far presented without a visualization of the actual uncertainty about this estimate. In this paper, we present three approaches that can be used to represent counting results together with their statistical error, and discuss which approach is most suited for further use based on simulations and an experimental ADF STEM image.

Dependence of Exchange Bias on Interparticle Interactions in Co/CoO Core/Shell Nanostructures

This article reports the dependence of exchange bias (EB) effect on interparticle interactions in nanocrystalline Co/CoO core/shell structures, synthesized using the conventional sol-gel technique. Analysis via powder X-Ray diffraction (PXRD) studies and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images confirm the presence of crystalline phases of core/shell Co/CoO with average particle size ≈ 18 nm. Volume fraction (φ) is varied (from 20% to 1%) by the introduction of a stoichiometric amount of non-magnetic amorphous silica matrix (SiO2) which leads to a change in interparticle interaction (separation). The influence of exchange and dipolar interactions on the EB effect, caused by the variation in interparticle interaction (separation) is studied for a series of Co/CoO core/shell nanoparticle systems. Studies of thermal variation of magnetization (M-T) and magnetic hysteresis loops (M-H) for the series point towards strong dependence of magnetic properties on dipolar interaction in concentrated assemblies whereas individual nanoparticle response is dominant in isolated nanoparticle systems. The analysis of the EB effect reveals a monotonic increase of coercivity (HC) and EB field (HE) with increasing volume fraction. When the nanoparticles are close enough and the interparticle interaction is significant, collective behavior leads to an increase in the effective antiferromagnetic (AFM) CoO shell thickness which results in high HC and HE. Moreover, in concentrated assemblies, the dipolar field superposes to the local exchange field and enhances the EB effect contributing as an additional source of unidirectional anisotropy.

Synergistic induction of IL-6 production in human bronchial epithelial cells in vitro by nickel nanoparticles and lipopolysaccharide is mediated by STAT3 and C/EBPβ

We previously reported that delivery of nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) and bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into the lungs of mice synergistically increased IL-6 production and inflammation, and male mice were more susceptible than female mice. The primary goal of this study was to utilize an in vitro human lung epithelial cell model (BEAS-2B) to investigate the intracellular signaling mechanisms that mediate IL-6 production by LPS and NiNPs. We also investigated the effect of sex hormones on NiNP and LPS-induced IL-6 production in vitro. LPS and NiNPs synergistically induced IL-6 mRNA and protein in BEAS-2B cells. TPCA-1, a dual inhibitor of IKK-2 and STAT3, blocked the synergistic increase in IL-6 caused by LPS and NiNPs, abolished STAT3 activation, and reduced C/EBPβ. Conversely, SC144, an inhibitor of the gp130 component of the IL-6 receptor, enhanced IL-6 production induced by LPS and NiNPs. Treatment of BEAS-2B cells with sex hormones (17β-estradiol, progesterone, or testosterone) or the anti-oxidant NAC, had no effect on IL-6 induction by LPS and NiNPs. These data suggest that LPS and NiNPs induce IL-6 via STAT3 and C/EBPβ in BEAS-2B cells. While BEAS-2B cells are a suitable model to study mechanisms of IL-6 production, they do not appear to be suitable for studying the effect of sex hormones.

Tailoring Interfacial Exchange Anisotropy in Hard-Soft Core-Shell Ferrite Nanoparticles for Magnetic Hyperthermia Applications

Magnetically hard-soft core-shell ferrite nanoparticles are synthesized using an organometallic decomposition method through seed-mediated growth. Two sets of core-shell nanoparticles (S1 and S2) with different shell (Fe3O4) thicknesses and similar core (CoFe2O4) sizes are obtained by varying the initial quantities of seed nanoparticles of size 6.0 ± 1.0 nm. The nanoparticles synthesized have average sizes of 9.5 ± 1.1 (S1) and 12.2 ± 1.7 (S2) nm with corresponding shell thicknesses of 3.5 and 6.1 nm. Magnetic properties are investigated under field-cooled and zero-field-cooled conditions at several temperatures and field cooling values. Magnetic heating efficiency for magnetic hyperthermia applications is investigated by measuring the specific absorption rate (SAR) in alternating magnetic fields at several field strengths and frequencies. The exchange bias is found to have a nonmonotonic and oscillatory relationship with temperature at all fields. SAR values of both core-shell samples are found to be considerably larger than that of the single-phase bare core particles. The effective anisotropy and SAR values are found to be larger in S2 than those in S1. However, the saturation magnetization displays the opposite behavior. These results are attributed to the occurrence of spin-glass regions at the core-shell interface of different amounts in the two samples. The novel outcome is that the interfacial exchange anisotropy of core-shell nanoparticles can be tailored to produce large effective magnetic anisotropy and thus large SAR values.

Azo-functionalized superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles: an efficient adsorbent for the removal of bromocresol green from contaminated water

Water contamination is regarded as one of the world's worst tragedies owing to the continual depletion of water resources suitable for drinking and agriculture. Researchers have recently been interested in developing novel and more effective adsorbents for wastewater purification. We report herein a magnetic adsorbent nanomaterial for the removal of the anionic dye bromocresol green (BCG) from wastewater. The adsorbent is based on superparamagnetic iron oxide (cubic Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated with a high-molecular-weight azo dye synthesized via diazo coupling of vitamin B1 with a trisubstituted benzene derivative. The proposed adsorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, FTIR and ¹H-NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, dynamic light scattering, vibrating sample magnetometry, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction crystallography. At room temperature and pH 2.0, the synthesized adsorbent showed an average particle size of 65.9 ± 8.0 nm, a high magnetization saturation (65.58 emu g⁻¹), a high equilibrium adsorption capacity (36.91 mg g⁻¹). Adsorption of BCG was found to take place via a physisorption mechanism and followed a pseudo-second-order rate kinetics. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process is enthalpy driven by hydrogen bonding and/or van der Waals interactions. After treating water samples with the suggested adsorbent, it can be easily removed from water using a strong external magnetic field.

An efficient adsorbent based on azo-dye-coated superparamagnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles was synthesized for the removal of the anionic dye, bromocresol green, from wastewater.

Sol-gel auto combustion synthesis, characterization, and application of Tb2FeMnO6 nanostructures as an effective photocatalyst for the discoloration of organic dye contaminants in wastewater

In this study, the auto-combustion sol-gel method was used to prepare novel Tb2FeMnO6 (TFMO) double perovskite nanoparticles. Chemical and natural fuels were used to achieve these particles with appropriate size. The resulting particles were examined via X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Rietveld analysis was also performed to confirm the crystallinity and lattice parameters of the formed particles. The particles obtained in the presence of maleic acid were selected as the optimal sample (S4), and the particles obtained in the presence of pomegranate paste were chosen as the non-optimal sample (S8) in terms of size and morphology. Both particles were used to investigate the photocatalytic activity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analyses and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms were performed for both samples and the results were compared. Erythrosine and malachite green dyes in aqueous solutions were used as contaminants in the photocatalysis process. The results showed 22% and 20% discoloration for S4 and 41% and 30% discoloration for S8 in the presence of erythrosine and malachite green under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity was investigated under UV light for S4, which showed 80% and 50% discoloration for erythrosine and malachite green, respectively. Investigating the photocatalytic activity of TFMO double perovskite nanoparticles showed that these nanoparticles could be a desirable option for mitigating water pollution.

Magnetic surfactants: A review of recent progress in synthesis and applications

Magnetic surfactants are a special class of surfactants with magneto-responsive properties. These surfactants possess lower critical micelle concentrations and are more effective in reducing surface tension as compared to conventional surfactants. Such surfactants' ability to manipulate self-assembly in a controlled way by tuning the magnetic field makes them an attractive choice for several applications, including drug delivery, catalysis, separation, oilfield, and water treatment. In this work, we reviewed the properties of magnetic surfactants and possible explanations of magnetic behavior. This article also covers the synthesis methods that can be used to synthesize different types of cationic, anionic, nonionic, and zwitterionic magnetic surfactants. The applications of magnetic surfactants in different fields such as biotechnology, water treatment, catalysis, and oilfield have been discussed in detail.

Sustainable Ethanol Production From Sugarcane Molasses by Saccharomyces cerevisiae Immobilized on Chitosan-Coated Manganese Ferrite

The interaction between nanostructures and yeast cells, as well as the description of the effect of nanoparticles in ethanol production are open questions in the development of this nanobiotechnological process. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the ethanol production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the free and immobilized state on chitosan-coated manganese ferrite, using cane molasses as a carbon source. To obtain the chitosan-coated manganese ferrite, the one-step coprecipitation method was used. The nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction obtaining the typical diffraction pattern. The crystal size was calculated by the Scherrer equation as 15.2 nm. The kinetics of sugar consumption and ethanol production were evaluated by HPLC. With the immobilized system, it was possible to obtain an ethanol concentration of 56.15 g/L, as well as the total sugar consumption at 24 h of fermentation. Productivity and yield in this case were 2.3 ± 0.2 g/(L * h) and 0.28 ± 0.03, respectively. However, at the same time in the fermentation with free yeast, 39.1 g/L were obtained. The total consumption of fermentable sugar was observed only after 42 h, reaching an ethanol titer of 50.7 ± 3.1, productivity and yield of 1.4 ± 0.3 g/(L * h) and 0.25 ± 0.4, respectively. Therefore, a reduction in fermentation time, higher ethanol titer and productivity were demonstrated in the presence of nanoparticles. The application of manganese ferrite nanoparticles shows a beneficial effect on ethanol production. Research focused on the task of defining the mechanism of their action and evaluation of the reuse of biomass immobilized on manganese ferrite in the ethanol production process should be carried out in the future.

Nickel nanoparticle-decorated reduced graphene oxide/WO3 nanocomposite - a promising candidate for gas sensing

We report for the first time the combination of WO3 sensing elements with a non-noble metal-carbon composite, namely a nickel metal nanoparticle-carbon composite (Ni@rGO). Previous work with WO3 had used either NiO (as part of the WO3 lattice), solely carbon, Pd-surface decorated WO3 (Pd@WO3), or Pd or Pt@carbon@WO3. We demonstrate the gas response for pure WO3, rGO/WO3 and Ni@rGO/WO3 sensing elements towards NO2 and acetone in air as well as towards CO in N2. The addition of 0.35 wt % Ni@rGO composite to WO3 enables the increase of the sensory response by more than 1.6 times for NO2 vapors. The gas response towards acetone using 0.35 wt % Ni@rGO/WO3 composite was 1.5 times greater for 3500 ppm than for 35,000 ppm acetone. For 0.35 wt % Ni@rGO/WO3 composite and CO gas, a response time (T res) of 7 min and a recovery time (T rec) of 2 min was determined.

Structural and Magnetic Properties of Ni/C Composites Synthesized from Beet Pulp and Corn Stems

Nickel/carbon composites were synthesized by the carbonization method with the use of the steam-gas activation technique. Beet pulp and corn stems were used as initial raw materials for composites synthesis. The obtained substances were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and magnetic properties investigation. The presence of nickel in synthesized composites was estimated during analysis, and the average particle size of nickel was determined as well. The specific surface area of the obtained samples was measured by the technique of Methylene blue sorption from the aqueous solution. The results of the performed investigation demonstrate clearly the promising application of synthesized composites as magneto-active sorbents, which could be easily separated from water solutions.

Synthesis of manganese doped β-FeOOH and MnFe2O4 nanorods for enhanced drug delivery and hyperthermia application

Preparation of manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) nanorods by the reduction of akaganeite seeds in the presence of oleylamine is reported. The Mn-doped β-FeOOH akaganeite seeds have been processed by the hydrolysis of metal-chloride salts in the presence of polyethylenimine (PEI) surfactant. The hydrophobic oleylamine capped nanorods are made hydrophilic using trisodium citrate as a phase transferring agent. The nanorods form with an aspect ratio of 5.47 and possess a high magnetisation value of 69 emu/g at an applied magnetic field of 1.5 T. The colloidal water dispersion of nanorods exhibits superior heating efficiency by the application of alternating magnetic field (AMF). A specific absorption rate value of 798 W/g is achieved at an applied AMF of field strength 500 Oe and frequency 316 kHz. Further, the citrate functionalised nanorods are capable of attaching with doxorubicin (DOX) electrostatically with a loading efficiency of 97% and the drug release is pH responsive. The DOX loaded nanorods show a promising effect on the apoptosis of MCF-7 as experimented in vitro.

Sex differences in the acute and subchronic lung inflammatory responses of mice to nickel nanoparticles

Nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) are increasingly used in nanotechnology applications, yet information on sex differences in NiNP-induced lung disease is lacking. The goal of this study was to explore mechanisms of susceptibility between male and female mice after acute or subchronic pulmonary exposure to NiNPs. For acute exposure, male and female mice received a single dose of NiNPs with or without LPS by oropharyngeal aspiration and were necropsied 24 h later. For subchronic exposure, mice received NiNPs with or without LPS six times over 3 weeks prior to necropsy. After acute exposure to NiNPs and LPS, male mice had elevated cytokines (CXCL1 and IL-6) and more neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), along with greater STAT3 phosphorylation in lung tissue. After subchronic exposure to NiNPs and LPS, male mice exhibited increased monocytes in BALF. Moreover, subchronic exposure of male mice to NiNP only induced higher CXCL1 and CCL2 in BALF along with increased alveolar infiltrates and CCL2 in lung tissue. STAT1 in lung tissue was induced by subchronic exposure to NiNPs in females but not males. Males had a greater induction of IL-6 mRNA in liver after acute exposure to NiNPs and LPS, and greater CCL2 mRNA in liver after subchronic NiNP exposure. These data indicate that susceptibility of males to acute lung inflammation involves enhanced neutrophilia with increased CXCL1 and IL-6/STAT3 signaling, whereas susceptibility to subchronic lung inflammation involves enhanced monocytic infiltration with increased CXCL1 and CCL2. STAT transcription factors appear to play a role in these sex differences. This study demonstrates sex differences in the lung inflammatory response of mice to NiNPs that has implications for human disease.

Synthesis and Characterization of Core–Shell Magnetic Nanoparticles NiFe2O4@Au

In this study, NiFe2O4@Au core–shell nanoparticles were prepared by the direct reduction of gold on the magnetic surface using amino acid methionine as a reducer and a stabilizing agent simultaneously. The obtained nanoparticles after three steps of gold deposition had an average size of about 120 nm. The analysis of particles was performed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy techniques. The results indicate successful synthesis of core–shell particles with the magnetic core, which consists of a few agglomerated nickel ferrite crystals with an average size 25.2 ± 2.0 nm, and the thick gold shell consists of fused Au0 nanoparticles (NPs). Magnetic properties of the obtained nanoparticles were examined with magnetic circular dichroism. It was shown that the magnetic behavior of NiFe2O4@Au NPs is typical for superparamagnetic NPs and corresponds to that for NiFe2O4 NPs without a gold shell. The results indicate the successful synthesis of core–shell particles with the magnetic nickel ferrite core and thick gold shell, and open the potential for the application of the investigated hybrid nanoparticles in hyperthermia, targeted drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, or cell separation. The developed synthesis strategy can be extended to other metal ferrites and iron oxides.

Microstructure of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 Nanofiber with Metal Nitrates in Electrospinning Precursor

Electrospun NiZn ferrite nanofibers have great potential due to their one-dimensional structure and electrical properties, but they have a low reproducibility resulting from many process confounders, so much research effort is needed to achieve optimized process control. For structure control, the viscosity of the precursor solution is a likely parameter. One solution is to use polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and metal nitrate to obtain the desired viscosity by increasing the nitrate content, even if the polymer content is decreased. Ni_0.5Zn_0.5Fe₂O₄ ferrite nanofiber was electrospun with various precursor conditions. Fifteen different precursor solutions, with a content of five polymers and three metal nitrates, were prepared, with precursor solutions composed of Fe(NO₃)₂·9H₂O, Ni(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and N,N-dimethylmethanamide. The fiber diameter changed from the lowest, of 62.41 nm, to 417.54 nm. This study shows that the average diameter can be controlled using the metal nitrate concentration without a difference in crystal structure when PVP is used. In a 24.0 mmol metal nitrate precursor solution, the process yield was improved to 140% after heat treatment. There was also no significant difference in the crystal structure and morphology. This system reduces the cost of raw materials for electrospinning and increases the process yield of NiZn ferrite nanofibers.

High Yield Synthesis and Application of Magnetite Nanoparticles (Fe3O4)

Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4), average particle size of 12.9 nm, were synthesized de novo from ferrous and ferric iron salt solutions (total iron salt concentration of 3.8 mM) using steady-state headspace NH3(g), 3.3% v/v, at room temperature and pressure, without mechanical agitation, resulting in >99.9% yield. Nanoparticles size distributions were based on enumeration of TEM images and chemical compositions analyzed by: XRD, EDXRF, and FT-IR; super-paramagnetic properties were analyzed by magnetization saturation (74 emu/g). Studies included varying headspace [NH3(g)] (1.6, 3.3, 8.4% v/v), and total iron concentrations (1.0 mM, 3.8 mM, 10.0 mM, and >>10 mM). An application of the unmodified synthesized magnetite nanoparticles included analyses of tetracycline’s (50, 100, 200, 300, and 400 ppb) in aqueous, which was compared to the same tetracycline concentrations prepared in aqueous synthesis suspension with >97% extraction, analyzed with LC-MS/MS.

Antimicrobial Metal Nanomaterials: From Passive to Stimuli-Activated Applications

The development of antimicrobial drug resistance among pathogenic bacteria and fungi is one of the most significant health issues of the 21st century. Recently, advances in nanotechnology have led to the development of nanomaterials, particularly metals that exhibit antimicrobial properties. These metal nanomaterials have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional antimicrobial therapies. In this review, a broad overview of metal nanomaterials, their synthesis, properties, and interactions with pathogenic micro-organisms is first provided. Secondly, the range of nanomaterials that demonstrate passive antimicrobial properties are outlined and in-depth analysis and comparison of stimuli-responsive antimicrobial nanomaterials are provided, which represent the next generation of microbiocidal nanomaterials. The stimulus applied to activate such nanomaterials includes light (including photocatalytic and photothermal) and magnetic fields, which can induce magnetic hyperthermia and kinetically driven magnetic activation. Broadly, this review aims to summarize the currently available research and provide future scope for the development of metal nanomaterial-based antimicrobial technologies, particularly those that can be activated through externally applied stimuli.

A Study on Magnetic Removal of Hexavalent Chromium from Aqueous Solutions Using Magnetite/Zeolite-X Composite Particles as Adsorbing Material

Toxic and heavy metals are considered harmful derivatives of industrial activities; they are not biodegradable and their accumulation in living organisms can become lethal. Among other heavy and toxic metals, chromium is considered hazardous, especially in the hexavalent (Cr6+) form. Numerous established studies show that exposure to Cr6+ via drinking water leads to elevated chromium levels in tissues, which may result in various forms of cancer. The purpose of this research is to synthesize magnetite/zeolite-X composite particles for the adsorption and magnetic removal of Cr6+ ions from aqueous solutions. Synthesis and characterization of such composite nanomaterials, along with an initial experimental evaluation of Cr6+ removal from water-based solution, are presented. Results show that zeolite-X is a very promising zeolite form, that when bound to magnetic nanoparticles can be used to trap and magnetically remove toxic ions from aqueous solutions.

Thermal decomposition of a layered double hydroxide as a bottom up approach for the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles embedded in carbon structures

Thermal behaviour of a layered double hydroxide intercalated with a carboxymethylcellulose polymer was evaluated to inspect chemical processes occurring during its decomposition above 500 °C, under N₂, as well as the product properties.

Confinement-Induced Giant Spin-Orbit-Coupled Magnetic Moment of Co Nanoclusters in TiO2 Films

High magnetization materials are in great demand for the fabrication of advanced multifunctional magnetic devices. Notwithstanding this demand, the development of new materials with these attributes has been relatively slow. In this work, we propose a new strategy to achieve high magnetic moments above room temperature. Our material engineering approach invoked the embedding of magnetic nanoclusters in an oxide matrix. By precisely controlling pulsed laser deposition parameters, Co nanoclusters are formed in a 5 at % Co-TiO₂ film. The presence of these nanoclusters was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption fine structure. The film exhibits a very high saturation magnetization of 99 emu/cm³. Detailed studies using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism confirm that Co has an enhanced magnetic moment of 3.5 μ_B/atom, while the Ti and O also contribute to the magnetic moments. First-principles calculations supported our hypothesis that the metallic Co nanoclusters surrounded by a TiO₂ matrix can exhibit both large spin and orbital moments. Moreover, a quantum confinement effect results in a high Curie temperature for the embedded Co nanoclusters. These findings reveal that 1-2 nm nanoclusters that are quantum confined can exhibit very large magnetic moments above room temperature, representing a promising advance for the design of new high magnetization materials.

Synthesis and controlled morphology of Ni@Ag core shell nanowires with excellent catalytic efficiency and recyclability

Ni@Ag core shell nanowires (NWs) were prepared by in situ chemical reduction of Ag⁺ around NiNWs as the inner core. Different Ni@Ag NWs with controllable morphologies were achieved through the layer-plus-island growth mode and this mechanism was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. When used as a catalyst, the synthesized Ni@Ag NWs exhibited high reduction efficiency by showing a high reaction rate constant k of 0.408 s^-1 in reducing 4-nitrophenol at room temperature. Besides, combining the magnetic property, including high saturation magnetization and low coercivity, the magnetic NiNW core contributes to excellent recyclability and long-term stability with only a 2.2% performance loss after 10 recycles by magnets. The Ni@Ag NWs proposed here show unprecedentedly high potential in applications requiring high efficiency and a recyclable catalyst.

Sustainable preparation of sunlight active α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles using iron containing ionic liquids for photocatalytic applications

Inspired by the nano-segregation of ionic liquids (ILs) into bi-continuous structures constituting of arrays of ionic and non-ionic components, herein, a new and sustainable strategy for preparation of mesh-like nano-sheet α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles and their photo-catalytic activity under sunlight, is presented. For the purpose, metal (iron) containing ionic liquids (MILs), 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrates, [C_nmim][FeCl₄], (n = 4, 8 and 16), which not only act as precursors and solvents but also as structure directing agents have been used. Thus prepared NPs show MIL dependent structural, photophysical and magnetic properties. The catalytic efficiency of NPs has been tested for the photo-degradation of organic dyes (Rhodamine B) in aqueous solution under sunlight. The NPs are found to exhibit comparable catalytic efficiency under sunlight as compared to that observed under high intensity visible lamplight, without showing a decline in their catalytic efficiency even after 4 catalytic cycles. It is anticipated that the present work will provide a new platform for preparation of sunlight active nanomaterials for photo-catalytic applications with control over the structural and physical properties via varying the molecular structure of MILs.

Inspired by nanosegregation of ionic liquids into bicontinuous structures of arrays of ionic and non-ionic components, we present a new sustainable strategy for preparation of mesh-like nano-sheets of α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles and their photocatalytic activity under sunlight.

Non-Supported Nickel-Based Coral Sponge-Like Porous Magnetic Alloys for Catalytic Production of Syngas and Carbon Bio-Nanofilaments via a Biogas Decomposition Approach

Porous Ni, Ni-Co, Ni-Fe, and Ni-Cu magnetic alloys with a morphology similar to a giant barrel sponge were synthesized via a facile co-precipitation procedure and then by hydrogen reduction treatment. For the first time, the non-supported alloys with their unique morphology were employed in catalytic biogas decomposition (CBD) at a reaction temperature of 700 °C and 100 mL min^-1 to produce syngas and carbon bio-nanofilaments, and the catalysts' behavior, CH₄ and CO₂ conversion, and the carbon produced during the reaction were investigated. All of the equimolar alloy catalysts showed good activity and stability for the catalytic biogas decomposition. The highest sustainability factor (0.66) and carbon yield (424%) were accomplished with the Ni-Co alloy without any significant inactivation for six hours, while the highest carbon efficiency of 36.43 was obtained with the Ni-Co catalyst, which is considered relatively low in comparison with industry standards, indicating a low carbon production process efficiency, possibly due to the relatively high biogas flow rate. The higher activity of the Ni-Co alloy catalyst was associated with the synergistic impact between nickel and cobalt, allowing the catalyst to maintain a high stability throughout the reaction period. Moreover, highly uniform, interwoven carbon bio-nanofilaments with a parallel and fishbone structure were achieved.

Dielectric Properties for Nanocomposites Comparing Commercial and Synthetic Ni- and Fe3O4-Loaded Polystyrene

Nanomaterial-loaded thermoplastics are attractive for applications in adaptive printing methods, as the physical properties of the printed materials are dependent on the nanomaterial type and degree of dispersion. This study compares the dispersion and the impact on the dielectric properties of two common nanoparticles, nickel and iron oxide, loaded into polystyrene. Comparisons between commercial and synthetically prepared samples indicate that well-passivated synthetically prepared nanomaterials are dispersed and minimize the impact on the dielectric properties of the host polymer by limiting particle-particle contacts. Commercial samples were observed to phase-segregate, leading to the loss of the low-k performance of polystyrene. The change in the real and imaginary dielectric was systematically studied in two earth abundant nanoparticles at the concentration between 0 and 13 vol % (0-50 wt %). By varying the volume percentage of fillers in the matrix, it is shown that one can increase the magnetic properties of the materials while minimizing unwanted contributions to the dielectric constant and dielectric loss. The well-dispersed nanoparticle systems were successfully modeled through the Looyenga dielectric theory, thus giving one a predictive ability for the dielectric properties. The current experimental work coupled with modeling could facilitate future material choices and guide design rules for printable polymer composite systems.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Iron and Cobalt Magnetic Metal Nanoparticles and Iron/Calcium Oxide and Cobalt/Calcium Oxide Nanocomposites

We report an environmentally benign and cost-effective method to produce Fe and Co magnetic metal nanoparticles as well as the Fe/Cao and Co/CaO nanocomposites by using a novel, dry mechanochemical process. Mechanochemical milling of metal oxides with a suitable reducing agent resulted in the production of magnetic metal nanoparticles. The process involved grinding and consequent reduction of low-costing oxide powders, unlike conventional processing techniques involving metal salts or metal complexes. Calcium granules were used as the reducing agent. Magnetometry measurements were performed over a large range of temperatures, from 10 to 1273 K, to evaluate the Curie temperature, blocking temperature, irreversibility temperature, saturation magnetization, and coercivity. The saturation magnetizations of the iron and cobalt nanoparticles were found to be 191 and 102 emu g-1, respectively. The heating abilities of these nanoparticles suspended in several liquids under alternating magnetic fields were measured and the specific loss power was determined. Our results suggest that the dry mechanochemical process is a robust method to produce metallic nanoparticles and nanocomposites.

Synthesis of Highly Uniform Nickel Multipods with Tunable Aspect Ratio by Microwave Power Control

As the importance of anisotropic nanostructures and the role of surfaces continues to rise in applications including catalysis, magneto-optics, and electromagnetic interference shielding, there is a need for efficient and economical synthesis routes for such nanostructures. The article describes the application of cycled microwave power for the rapid synthesis of highly branched pure-phase face-centered cubic crystalline nickel multipod nanostructures with >99% multipod population. By controlling the power delivery to the reaction mixture through cycling, superior control is achieved over the growth kinetics of the metallic nanostructures, allowing formation of multipods consisting of arms with different aspect ratios. The multipod structures are formed under ambient conditions in a simple reaction system composed of nickel acetylacetonate (Ni(acac)₂), oleylamine (OAm), and oleic acid (OAc) in a matter of minutes by selective heating at the (111) overgrowth corners on Ni nanoseeds. The selective heating at the corners leads to accelerated autocatalytic growth along the ⟨111⟩ direction through a "lightning rod" effect. The length is proprtional to the length and number of microwave (MW)-on cycles, whereas the core size is controlled by continuous MW power delivery. The roles of heating mode (cycling versus variable power versus convective heating) during synthesis of the materials is explored, allowing a mechanism into how cycled microwave energy may allow fast multipod evolution to be proposed.

Shape and Size-Dependent Magnetic Properties of Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Piperidine

In this article, we proposed a facile one-step synthesis of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles of different shapes and sizes by co-precipitation of FeCl₂ with piperidine. A careful investigation of TEM micrographs shows that the shape and size of nanoparticles can be tuned by varying the molarity of piperidine. XRD patterns match the standard phase of the spinal structure of Fe₃O₄ which confirms the formation of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that molar concentration of FeCl₂ solution plays a significant role in determining the shape and size of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. Changes in the shape and sizes of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles which are influenced by the molar concentration of FeCl₂ can easily be explained with the help of surface free energy minimization principle. Further, to study the magnetic behavior of synthesized Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, magnetization vs. magnetic field (M-H) and magnetization vs. temperature (M-T) measurements were carried out by using Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS). These results show systematic changes in various magnetic parameters like remanent magnetization (Mr), saturation magnetization (Ms), coercivity (Hc), and blocking temperature (T _B) with shapes and sizes of Fe₃O₄. These variations of magnetic properties of different shaped Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles can be explained with surface effect and finite size effect.

Microwave Enhancement of Autocatalytic Growth of Nanometals

The desire for designing efficient synthetic methods that lead to industrially important nanomaterials has led a desire to more fully understand the mechanism of growth and how modern synthetic techniques can be employed. Microwave (MW) synthesis is one such technique that has attracted attention as a green, sustainable method. The reports of enhancement of formation rates and improved quality for MW driven reactions are intriguing, but the lack of understanding of the reaction mechanism and how coupling to the MW field leads to these observations is concerning. In this manuscript, the growth of a metal nanoparticles (NPs) in a microwave cavity is spectroscopically analyzed and compared with the classical autocatalytic method of NP growth to elucidate the underpinnings for the observed enhanced growth behavior for metal NPs prepared in a MW field. The study illustrates that microwave synthesis of nickel and gold NPs below saturation conditions follows the Finke-Watzky mechanism of nucleation and growth. The enhancement of the reaction arises from the size-dependent increase in MW absorption cross section for the metal NPs. For Ni, the presence of oxides is considered via theoretical computations and compared to dielectric measurements of isolated nickel NPs. The study definitively shows that MW growth can be modeled by an autocatalytic mechanism that directly leads to the observed enhanced rates and improved quality widely reported in the nanomaterial community when MW irradiation is employed.

From Colloidal Monodisperse Nickel Nanoparticles to Well-Defined Ni/Al2O3 Model Catalysts

In the past few decades, advances in colloidal nanoparticle synthesis have created new possibilities for the preparation of supported model catalysts. However, effective removal of surfactants is a prerequisite to evaluate the catalytic properties of these catalysts in any reaction of interest. Here we report on the colloidal preparation of surfactant-free Ni/Al₂O₃ model catalysts. Monodisperse Ni nanoparticles (NPs) with mean particle size ranging from 4 to 9 nm were synthesized via thermal decomposition of a zerovalent precursor in the presence of oleic acid. Five weight percent Ni/Al₂O₃ catalysts were produced by direct deposition of the presynthesized NPs on an alumina support, followed by thermal activation (oxidation-reduction cycle) for complete surfactant removal and surface cleaning. Structural and morphological characteristics of the nanoscale catalysts are described in detail following the propagation of the bulk and surface Ni species at the different treatment stages. Powder X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction experiments as well as infrared spectroscopy of CO adsorption and magnetic measurements were conducted. The applied thermal treatments are proven to be fully adequate for complete surfactant removal while preserving the metal particle size and the size distribution at the level attained by the colloidal synthesis. Compared with standard impregnated Ni/Al₂O₃ catalysts, the current model materials display narrowed Ni particle size distributions and increased reducibility with a higher fraction of the metallic nickel atoms exposed at the catalyst surface.

Exploring quantum Griffiths phase in Ni1-x V x nanoalloys

Metallic Ni_1-x V _x alloys exhibit a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic disordered quantum phase transition in bulk. Such a phase transition is accompanied by a quantum Griffiths phase (QGP), featuring fractional power-law temperature dependences of physical variables, like magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, at low temperatures. As nanoparticles (NP's) usually exhibit properties significantly different from their bulk counterparts, it is intriguing to explore the occurrence of quantum Griffiths phase in Ni_1-x V _x nanoalloys. NP's of Ni_1-x V _x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.17) alloys are prepared by a chemical reflux method. The structure and composition of the nanoalloys are determined by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron microscopy techniques. Metallicity of the samples has been ensured by electrical resistivity measurements. DC magnetization results suggest that ferromagnetism persists in the NP's until x = 0.17. Low-temperature upturns in magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity hint at critical fluctuations evolving with V-doping. The fluctuations might stem from isolated Ni-clusters within the ferromagnetic NP, indicating a QGP region ranging from x = 0.085 to x ≫ 0.17.

Effect of Particle Size on the Magnetic Properties of Ni Nanoparticles Synthesized with Trioctylphosphine as the Capping Agent

Magnetic cores of passive components are required to have low hysteresis loss, which is dependent on the coercive force. Since it is well known that the coercive force becomes zero at the superparamagnetic regime below a certain critical size, we attempted to synthesize Ni nanoparticles in a size-controlled fashion and investigated the effect of particle size on the magnetic properties. Ni nanoparticles were synthesized by the reduction of Ni acetylacetonate in oleylamine at 220 °C with trioctylphosphine (TOP) as the capping agent. An increase in the TOP/Ni ratio resulted in the size decrease. We succeeded in synthesizing superparamagnetic Ni nanoparticles with almost zero coercive force at particle size below 20 nm by the TOP/Ni ratio of 0.8. However, the saturation magnetization values became smaller with decrease in the size. The saturation magnetizations of the Ni nanoparticles without capping layers were calculated based on the assumption that the interior atoms of the nanoparticles were magnetic, whereas the surface-oxidized atoms were non-magnetic. The measured and calculated saturation magnetization values decreased in approximately the same fashion as the TOP/Ni ratio increased, indicating that the decrease could be mainly attributed to increases in the amounts of capping layer and oxidized surface atoms.

Nickel Nanoparticles Entangled in Carbon Nanotubes: Novel Ink for Nanotube Printing

We report the serendipitous discovery of a rapid and inexpensive method to attach nanoscale magnetic chaperones to carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) become entangled in CNTs after both are dispersed in kerosene by sonication and form conjugates. An externally applied magnetic field manipulates the resulting CNTs-NiNP ink without NiNP separation, allowing us to print an embedded circuit in an elastomeric matrix and fabricate a strain gage and an oil sensor. The new method to print a circuit in a soft material using an NiNP-CNT ink is more rapid and inexpensive than the complex physical and chemical means typically used to magnetize CNTs.

Engineering Nanostructures by Decorating Magnetic Nanoparticles onto Graphene Oxide Sheets to Shield Electromagnetic Radiations

In this study, a minimum reflection loss of -70 dB was achieved for a 6 mm thick shield (at 17.1 GHz frequency) employing a unique approach. This was accomplished by engineering nanostructures through decoration of magnetic nanoparticles (nickel, Ni) onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. Enhanced electromagnetic (EM) shielding was derived by selectively localizing the nanoscopic particles in a specific phase of polyethylene (PE)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends. By introduction of a conducting inclusion (like multiwall carbon nanotubes, MWNTs) together with the engineered nanostructures (nickel-decorated GO, GO-Ni), the shielding efficiency can be enhanced significantly in contrast to physically mixing the particles in the blends. For instance, the composites showed a shielding efficiency >25 dB for a combination of MWNTs (3 wt %) and Ni nanoparticles (52 wt %) in PE/PEO blends. However, similar shielding effectiveness could be achieved for a combination of MWNTs (3 wt %) and 10 vol % of GO-Ni where in the effective concentration of Ni was only 19 wt %. The GO-Ni sheets facilitated in an efficient charge transfer as manifested from high electrical conductivity in the blends besides enhancing the permeability in the blends. It is envisioned that GO is simultaneously reduced in the process of synthesizing GO-Ni, and this facilitated in efficient charge transfer between the neighboring CNTs. More interestingly, the blends with MWNTs/GO-Ni attenuated the incoming EM radiation mostly by absorption. This study opens new avenues in designing polyolefin-based lightweight shielding materials by engineering nanostructures for numerous applications.

Nickel nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide sheets: a phosphine free, magnetically recoverable and cost effective catalyst for Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions
