Abstract
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic, debilitating disease characterised by a wide range of symptoms that severely impact all aspects of life. Despite its significant prevalence, ME/CFS remains one of the most understudied and misunderstood conditions in modern medicine. ME/CFS lacks standardised diagnostic criteria owing to variations in both inclusion and exclusion criteria across different diagnostic guidelines, and furthermore, there are currently no effective treatments available. Moving beyond the traditional fragmented perspectives that have limited our understanding and management of the disease, our analysis of current information on ME/CFS represents a significant paradigm shift by synthesising the disease's multifactorial origins into a cohesive model. We discuss how ME/CFS emerges from an intricate web of genetic vulnerabilities and environmental triggers, notably viral infections, leading to a complex series of pathological responses including immune dysregulation, chronic inflammation, gut dysbiosis, and metabolic disturbances. This comprehensive model not only advances our understanding of ME/CFS's pathophysiology but also opens new avenues for research and potential therapeutic strategies. By integrating these disparate elements, our work emphasises the necessity of a holistic approach to diagnosing, researching, and treating ME/CFS, urging the scientific community to reconsider the disease's complexity and the multifaceted approach required for its study and management.

Abstract
Kawasaki disease (KD) is a medium vessel vasculitis that has a special predilection for coronary arteries. Cardiovascular complications include the development of coronary artery abnormalities (CAAs) and myocarditis. Endothelial dysfunction (ED) is now recognized to be a key component in the pathogenesis of KD and is believed to contribute to the development of CAAs. ED has been evaluated by several clinical parameters. However, there is paucity of literature on laboratory markers for ED in KD. The evaluation of ED can be aided by the identification of biomarkers such as oxidative stress markers, circulating cells and their progenitors, angiogenesis factors, cytokines, chemokines, cell-adhesion molecules, and adipokines. If validated in multicentric studies, these biomarkers may be useful for monitoring the disease course of KD. They may also provide a useful predictive marker for the development of premature atherosclerosis that is often a concern during long-term follow-up of KD. This review provides insights into the current understanding of the significance of ED in KD.

Abstract
Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) resides at the outermost boundary of the vascular wall, surrounding most conduit blood vessels, except for the cerebral vessels, in humans. A growing body of evidence suggests that inflammation localized within PVAT may contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs), e.g., systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriasis, etc., exhibit heightened systemic inflammation and are at increased risk for CVD. Data from clinical studies in patients with ARDs support a linkage between dysfunctional adipose tissue, and PVAT in particular, in disease pathogenesis. Here, we review the data linking PVAT to the pathogenesis of CVD in patients with ARDs, focusing on the role of novel PVAT imaging techniques in defining disease risk and responses to biological therapies.

Abstract
Background Sepsis mortality has remained unchanged for greater than a decade, and early recognition continues to be the most important factor in mortality outcome. Plasma resistin concentration is increased in sepsis, but its mechanism and clinical relevance is unclear. As one function, resistin interacts with toll-like receptor 4 in competition with lipopolysaccharide, a main component of the gram-negative bacterial cell wall. It is not known if the type of infection leading to sepsis influences resistin production. The objective of this study was to investigate whether 1) early plasma resistin concentration can predict mortality, 2) elevated plasma resistin concentration is associated with clinical disease severity scores, such as SOFA, mSOFA and APACHE II, and 3) plasma resistin concentrations differ between gram negative versus other etiologies of sepsis. Methods This was an exploratory study in the framework of a prospective observational design. Peripheral venous blood samples were obtained from subjects admitted to the intensive care unit at clinical recognition of sepsis (0 hour) and at 6 and 24 hours. Vasopressor utilization was not a requirement for inclusion. Plasma was analyzed for resistin concentration by ELISA. Cytokine concentrations including IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 were determined by cytokine bead array. Cytokine data were evaluated against publicly available sepsis RNA expression datasets to compare protein versus RNA expression levels in predicting clinical disease state. Clinical data were collected from electronic health records for clinical severity index calculations and context for interpretation of resistin and cytokine concentrations. Subjects were followed up to 60 days, or until death, whichever came first. Statistical analysis was completed with R package and SPSS software. Results Resistin levels were elevated in subjects admitted to the intensive care unit with sepsis. Four-hundred subjects were screened with 45 subjects included in the final analysis. Thirteen of 45 patients were non-survivors. Mortality within 60 days correlated with significantly higher resistin concentrations than in survivors. A resistin concentration of >126 ng/mL at clinical recognition of sepsis and >197 ng/mL within the first 24 hours were associated with mortality within 60 days with an area under the curve of 0.82 and 0.88, respectively. Most subjects with resistin concentration greater than these threshold values were deceased prior to 30 days. Resistin concentrations correlated with SOFA, mSOFA, and APACHE II scores in addition to having association with increases in inflammatory and sepsis biomarkers. These associations were validated with analysis of RNA expression datasets. Conclusion Plasma resistin concentrations of >126 ng/mL at clinical recognition of sepsis and >197 ng/mL within the first 24 hours of clinical sepsis recognition are associated with all-cause mortality. Resistin concentration within this timeframe also has comparable mortality association to well-validated clinical severity indices of SOFA, mSOFA, and APACHE II scores.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a higher frequency of atherosclerotic lesions is associated with poor prognosis. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) has been reported to improve the lifespan and the prognosis of dyslipidaemia in patients with SLE, but the mechanism is unclear. We investigated the effect of supplemental HCQ treatment on the levels of serum cytokines associated with atherosclerosis in patients with stable SLE. METHODS Patients with SLE who received supplemental HCQ and maintained low disease activity between January 2016 and September 2020 were included in this study. Disease activity was assessed using Safety of Estrogens in Lupus National Assessment-SLE Disease Activity Index, Cutaneous Lupus Erythematous Disease Area and Severity Index, and Lupus Low Disease Activity State. Serum complement titres, anti-dsDNA antibodies, and serum cytokines (adiponectin, resistin, and leptin) were analyzed before and after HCQ treatment. RESULTS Forty-one patients (4 males and 37 females, mean age 41.3 ± 13.2 years) were included. Serum adiponectin levels were significantly increased after 3 months of HCQ treatment compared to baseline, and serum resistin levels were significantly reduced. The change in serum resistin level after HCQ administration was correlated with a significant reduction in serum TNF-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and IL-1RA levels. CONCLUSIONS Supplemental HCQ treatment in patients with SLE improved adipokine levels. HCQ may improve prognosis by controlling disease activity in SLE and reducing risk factors for atherosclerosis. Key Points • Hydroxychloroquine has been reported to improve the prognosis of dyslipidaemia in patients with SLE, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. • In this study, hydroxychloroquine improved adipokine levels in patients with SLE, implicating adipokines as a potential mechanism underlying the benefit of hydroxychloroquine on dyslipidaemia. • Supplemental hydroxychloroquine should be considered in patients with SLE harboring lipid abnormalities and risk factors for atherosclerosis.

Abstract
The risk of osteoporosis and fragility fracture is increased in patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Although the use of glucocorticoids is the major contributing factor, inflammation mediated by cytokines and growth factors and other medications, including the biologic and targeted disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, also play important roles in bone remodeling. Pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6, IL-17, and TNF[Formula: see text] increase RANK expression and promote osteoclast activity while inhibiting osteoblast-mediated bone formation through the Dickkopf-1 pathway. Certain autoantibodies stimulate differentiation of the osteoclasts, resulting in localized bone resorption. This article covers the prevalence and risk factors for osteoporosis in patients with common rheumatic diseases and the role of inflammatory cytokines and other clinical factors. Controlling disease-related inflammation and optimizing the diagnostic and therapeutic instrumentation is needed to reduce fragility fractures in patients with rheumatic diseases.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a polygenic chronic inflammatory condition that influences several body organs. While renal and dermatological changes are among the most common presentations of the disease. The current study examines the possible association between human Resistin (h-Res) and signs of disorder activities such as inflammation, renal function, lipids, and Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in females with SLE.
We performed cross-sectional research on 50 females with SLE diagnosed using the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. Forty females were recruited as controls. They matched the following items, including gender and body mass index (BMI) with age. In SLE patients, we discovered a statistically significant positive relationship between h-Res levels and ESR, CRP, Cr, ds-DNA, C3, duration of steroid treatment, and other variables. Disorder activity as determined by systemic lupus erythematosus disease index (SLEDAI) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) (p-value <0.05). The levels of h-Res and C3 are discovered to have a statistically significant negative relationship. In the case of SLE, the h-Res level can be used as a marker for Lupus Nephritis (LN) and atherosclerosis. In patients of SLE, more aggressive therapy of the underlying inflammatory process and better control of the traditional risk factors may be beneficial in reducing the risk of renal and atherosclerotic derangement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous studies have shown that adipokines may serve as potential biomarkers reflecting disease activity in various autoimmune diseases. Here, we investigated the relationship between four adipokines and clinical/laboratory findings in patients with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA). METHODS Sera from 63 patients with MPA and GPA who were registered in a prospective cohort were used to detect serum levels of adiponectin, chemerin, resistin, and vaspin using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Associations between adipokines and clinical and laboratory data was assessed using Pearson's correlation analysis. RESULTS The median age was 65.0 years, 24 patients were male, and 42 patients were diagnosed with MPA. The median levels of adiponectin, chemerin, resistin, and vaspin in patient sera were 13.9 ng/mL, 9.2 ng/mL, 23.7 ng/mL, and 0.1 ng/mL, respectively. A significant correlation between chemerin level and five-factor score (FFS) was found (r = 0.320, p = 0.011), and resistin was correlated with both Birmingham vasculitis activity score and FFS (r = 0.256, p = 0.043 and r = 0.320, p = 0.011). Regarding laboratory data, adiponectin level was associated with creatinine, and chemerin level was associated with creatinine, albumin, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). On the other hand, resistin was found to be associated with white blood cell count, creatinine, ESR, and C-reactive protein. Age did not have a significant impact on the levels of adipokines. CONCLUSIONS The expression of adipokines in the sera of patients with MPA and GPA differs depending on clinical and laboratory features, and serum resistin may be suggested as a potential biomarker reflecting disease activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies assessing the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values, serum adiponectin, leptin and resistin levels in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHOD Online databases were searched on 31 March 2019 in order to identify studies comparing HOMA-IR, serum adiponectin, leptin and resistin levels between patients with SLE and controls. A random-effects model was adopted. RESULTS Fifty-six studies involving a total of 4460 patients with SLE were included. Patients with SLE had significantly higher HOMA-IR values (standardized mean difference (SMD)=0.425; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.156-0.693; I2=93.8%) than the control group. The serum levels of adiponectin (SMD=0.547; 95% CI 0.219-0.874; I2=90.1%), leptin (SMD=0.843; 95% CI 0.454-1.231; I2=94.4%) and resistin (SMD=0.856; 95% CI 0.199-1.513; I2=96.6%) were all higher among patients with SLE than controls. A meta-regression analysis revealed that the serum resistin level was positively correlated with disease activity (coefficient 0.123; 95% CI 0.051-0.195; p<0.001). CONCLUSION Patients with SLE have higher HOMA-IR values and serum levels of adiponectin, leptin and resistin than individuals without SLE. The serum level of resistin correlates with SLE disease activity.

Abstract
Objective Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a disease with autoimmune etiology. The main pathomechanism is related to the production of antibodies against nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. The present study is aimed to compare the serum level of adipokines in patients with MG with that in controls, as well as to study the relation of these levels with disease severity. Patients and methods Fifty patients with MG and 30 healthy individuals were enrolled in our study. Serum concentrations of select adipokines, namely adiponectin, leptin, omentin, visfatin, and resistin were measured. Results The results showed a significant increase in serum concentrations of adiponectin and resistin in the patients with MG compared with the controls. Conclusion Further studies are warranted to assess changes in adipokine concentration levels in patients with MG.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adipokines are chemical mediators released from adipose tissue involved in regulation of appetite, insulin sensitivity, immune system and inflammatory responses. Adipokines contributes to low grade inflammatory response in autoimmune disease like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) but the pathophysiology is yet not clear. The aim of this study is to understand role of adipokine interactions in SLE disease pathogenesis. METHODS Sixty newly diagnosed treatment naïve SLE patients fulfilling the ACR criteria and forty age-sex matched healthy subjects were enrolled in thiscase-control study. Disease activity in SLE patients was evaluated using SELENA-SLEDAI. Array of adipokines, C1q circulating immune complexes (C1q-CIC), anti-C1q, anti-ribososmal P0 (anti-RibP0) and anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) levels were detected by ELISA. Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and anti-dsDNA autoantibodieswere detected by Indirect Immunofluorescence (IIF), while antigen specificities were detected by Immunoassay blot. Serum levels of C3 and C4 complement factors were assessed by nephlometer. RESULTS Statistically significant elevation in progranulin, adipsin and resistin levels was seen among SLE patients when compared to healthy controls (p < 0.0001). Leptin and omentin levels were significantly reduced in SLE patients (p < 0.0001). There was no statistically significant difference in serum adiponectin, chemerin and visfatin levels when these two groups were compared (p > 0.05). Adiponectin, adipsin and resistin levels were elevated in SLE patients with renal manifestations (p < 0.05). Reduced leptin levels were significantly associated with presence of renal manifestations (p < 0.05). Adiponectin levels positively correlated with disease activity (r = 0.294, p = 0.027) whereas negatively correlated with C3 levels (r = -0.439, p = 0.0007). A positive correlation was observed between hypocomplementemia and leptin levels (p < 0.05). Leptin levels were negatively correlated with disease activity, anti-dsDNA, C1q-CIC and anti-C1q levels (p < 0.05). A significant positive correlation was observed between progranulin levels and anti-ribosomal P0 antibodies (r = 0.499, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Adipokines levels and associated clinical manifestations suggest involvement of adipokines in disease pathogenesis of SLE. SLE disease activity and complement components may suggest regulatory effect of adipokines (adiponectin and leptin) on disease pathogenesis. Further studies on adipokines in SLE patients with renal manifestations may propose them as prognostic markers in renal damage. TRIAL REGISTRATION NA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Higher serum adiponectin in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients mitigates the inflammatory response. Previous studies investigated serum adiponectin level in SLE patients compared with control subjects, yielding inconsistent results. OBJECTIVE The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the difference between serum adiponectin levels in SLE patients compared with control subjects. METHODS MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched from inception to August 31, 2016, to identify all observational studies that examined the relationship between serum adiponectin levels and SLE. The study quality was assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Standard mean difference values and 95% confidence intervals were estimated and pooled using the meta-analysis methodology. The Cochrane Q test and I statistics were used to test heterogeneity. To assess publication bias, visual observations of a funnel plot were used. The Stata software (version 11.0) was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS A total of 8 studies including 782 SLE patients and 550 control subjects were eligible for the meta-analysis. In overall random-effects model including all the studies, we found that patients with SLE had higher serum adiponectin levels than control subjects (eight studies; pooled standardized mean difference, 0.502 μg/mL; 95% confidence interval, 0.021-0.984; I = 94.0%; P < 0.001). In subgroup analyses, SLE patients with body mass index of 25 kg/m or greater had higher serum adiponectin levels compared with control subjects. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, our results demonstrate that higher serum adiponectin level is significantly associated with SLE. Furthermore, they suggest that serum adiponectin levels in SLE patients are not correlated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index scores. Imbalanced adiponectin levels might be associated with onset of other chronic diseases.

Abstract
Background The exact role of cytokines in inflammation and metabolic disorders in case of connective tissue diseases (CTDs) is under discussion. Methods In this study, we intended to find the relationship between the selected cytokines in inflammatory and metabolic disorders in patients with CTDs (n=55) and compared the results with those of control group subjects (n=25) matched by age and body mass. We estimated their nutritional status by the bioimpedance method. The levels of basic biochemical parameters and the levels of adiponectin, resistin, and chemerin were also estimated. Multiple regressions and area under the curve in receiver operating characteristic (AUC-ROC) curve were used to find the associations of aforementioned parameters. Results Patients with CTDs exhibited higher levels of chemerin than that of control group subjects. We found an inverse relationship between chemerin, RBC count, and hemoglobin levels. The concentration of adiponectin inversely correlated with the levels of platelets and concentrations of glucose and triglycerides as well as the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, whereas the concentration of resistin was positively correlated with WBC count, C-reactive protein (CRP), and the amount of used oral glucocorticosteroids. The mean ± standard deviation for the AUC-ROC curve in case of chemerin was the highest (AUC-ROC=0.714, p=0.0005) than that of both resistin and adiponectin. Conclusions Chemerin and resistin levels are related to the inflammatory state in patients with CTDs, whereas adiponectin levels seem to be correlated with a protective effect. Chemerin can be considered as a marker differentiating a proinflammatory state present in CTDs.

Abstract
Physical activity ameliorates fatigue in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients by an unknown mechanism. Adipokines, which are influenced by adiposity and physical activity, may be associated with patient-reported fatigue. We describe cross-sectional associations between adipokines and fatigue, physical activity, and SLE disease activity. We measured adipokines, self-reported fatigue, and objective physical activity in 129 SLE patients. Fatigue was assessed with the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System® (PROMIS®) Fatigue score. Disease activity was measured with the Safety of Estrogens in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus National Assessment-Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SELENA-SLEDAI). Participants wore an accelerometer for 7 days to measure physical activity. Leptin, adiponectin, and resistin were measured in stored serum with a Luminex bead-based assay. Multivariable regression models assessed relationships between fatigue and adipokines, and Spearman correlation coefficients summarized associations between adipokines, physical activity, and SELENA-SLEDAI. Median adipokine levels were: leptin 30.5 ng/ml (Interquartile Range 14.0, 56.6), adiponectin 11.6 μg/ml (7.2, 16.8) and resistin 1.4 ng/ml (1.0, 2.2). Associations between adipokines and FSS or PROMIS fatigue were not significant. Body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2 was associated with FSS and PROMIS fatigue in regression analyses (p < 0.05). Weak correlations between leptin, adiponectin, leptin/adiponectin (L/A) ratio, and physical activity and between adiponectin and SELENA-SLEDAI score were not significant after adjusting for BMI. Adipokines were not associated with fatigue in SLE. Adipokines were correlated with physical activity (leptin, adiponectin, L/A ratio) and SLE disease activity (adiponectin), but most of these associations were explained by BMI.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by multisystem organ involvement and unclear pathogenesis. Several adipokines synthesized in the adipose tissue, including leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and chemerin, have been explored in autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially SLE, and results suggest that these mediators may be implicated in the pathogenesis of SLE. However, the current results are controversial. In this review, we will briefly discuss the expression and possible pathogenic role of several important adipokines, including leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and chemerin in SLE.

Abstract
Although some signs of inflammation have been reported previously in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), the data are limited and contradictory. High-throughput methods now allow us to interrogate the human immune system for multiple markers of inflammation at a scale that was not previously possible. To determine whether a signature of serum cytokines could be associated with ME/CFS and correlated with disease severity and fatigue duration, cytokines of 192 ME/CFS patients and 392 healthy controls were measured using a 51-multiplex array on a Luminex system. Each cytokine's preprocessed data were regressed on ME/CFS severity plus covariates for age, sex, race, and an assay property of newly discovered importance: nonspecific binding. On average, TGF-β was elevated (P = 0.0052) and resistin was lower (P = 0.0052) in patients compared with controls. Seventeen cytokines had a statistically significant upward linear trend that correlated with ME/CFS severity: CCL11 (Eotaxin-1), CXCL1 (GROα), CXCL10 (IP-10), IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-5, IL-7, IL-12p70, IL-13, IL-17F, leptin, G-CSF, GM-CSF, LIF, NGF, SCF, and TGF-α. Of the 17 cytokines that correlated with severity, 13 are proinflammatory, likely contributing to many of the symptoms experienced by patients and establishing a strong immune system component of the disease. Only CXCL9 (MIG) inversely correlated with fatigue duration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the association of adipokines and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and its receptors with characteristics of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to investigate the correlation between adipokines and the TNF system. METHODS One hundred and thirty-six SLE women, aged ≥18 years old, were assessed. TNFα, soluble TNFα receptors 1 (sTNFR1) and 2 (sTNFR2) and adipokines were analyzed by ELISA kits. RESULTS The median (IQR) of age was 41.5 (33.0-49.7) years old and of disease duration 11.3 (7.8-15.8) years. The median (IQR) of disease activity was 0 (0-4) and of damage index was 2 (1-3). Higher levels of sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 were associated with nephritis (p < 0.001 for both), and sTNFR1 (p = 0.025) and TNFα (p = 0.014) were positively associated with arthritis. Higher sTNFR1 levels were found in participants that were not using antimalarial drugs (p = 0.04). Independent correlation was found between sTNFR1 (β = 0.253; p = 0.003) and sTNFR2 (β = 0.297; p < 0.001) levels and disease activity and damage index (sTNFR1: β = 0.367; p < 0.001; sTNFR2: β = 0.335; p < 0.001). Higher adiponectin levels were independently associated with nephritis (p = 0.009) and antimalarial drugs use (p = 0.015). There was a positive correlation between leptin and sTNFR2 levels (p = 0.002) and between resistin levels and sTNFR1 (p < 0.001) and sTNFR2 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The correlation between adipokines and TNF system allows a better understanding of the role of adipokines in the inflammatory response in SLE patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Resistin, which acts as a pro-inflammatory cytokine, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several autoimmune diseases. However, the involvement of resistin in neuromyelitis optica (NMO), a severe inflammatory central nervous system disorder that targets the optic nerve and spinal cord, remains unclear. METHODS We measured serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) resistin levels in patients with NMO and controls matched by age and sex. The link between resistin levels and clinical variables in NMO was subsequently assessed. RESULTS The concentrations of serum and CSF resistin were significantly higher in patients with NMO than in controls, and decreased following treatment with methylprednisolone. High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and annualized relapse rate positively correlated with resistin levels in patients with NMO. CONCLUSION Resistin might be a useful biomarker of inflammation in NMO, and a potential target for the treatment of NMO.

Abstract
A high level of serum resistin has recently been found in patients with a number of cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Hence, resistin may play a role in CRC development. Fulvic acid (FA), a class of humic substances, possesses pharmacological properties. However, the effect of FA on cancer pathophysiology remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of resistin on the endothelial adhesion of CRC and to determine whether FA elicits an antagonistic mechanism to neutralize this resistin effect. Human HCT-116 (p53-negative) and SW-48 (p53-positive) CRC cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were used in the experiments. Treatment of both HCT-116 and SW-48 cells with resistin increases the adhesion of both cells to HUVECs. This result indicated that p53 may not regulate this resistin effect. A mechanistic study in HCT-116 cells further showed that this resistin effect occurs via the activation of NF-κB and the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). Co-treating cells with both FA and resistin revealed that FA significantly attenuated the resistin-increased NF-κB activation and ICAM-1/VCAM-1 expression and the consequent adhesion of HCT-116 cells to HUVECs. These results demonstrate the role of resistin in promoting HCT-116 cell adhesion to HUVECs and indicate that FA might be a potential candidate for the inhibition of the endothelial adhesion of CRC in response to resistin.

Abstract
Over the past few decades, our understanding of the role of adipose tissue has changed dramatically. Far from simply being a site of energy storage or a modulator of the endocrine system, adipose tissue has emerged as an important regulator of multiple important processes including inflammation. Adipokines are a diverse family of soluble mediators with a range of specific actions on the immune response. Autoimmune diseases are perpetuated by chronic inflammatory responses but the exact etiology of these diseases remains elusive. While researchers continue to investigate these causes, millions of people continue to suffer from chronic diseases. To this end, an increased interest has developed in the connection between adipose tissue-secreted proteins that influence inflammation and the onset and perpetuation of autoimmunity. This review will focus on recent advances in adipokine research with specific attention on a subset of adipokines that have been associated with autoimmune diseases.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis (LN) have strong concomitance with cardiovascular disease that cannot be explained fully by typical risk factors. We examined the possibility that serum or urine expression of adipokines may act as biomarkers for LN, as these proteins have been associated previously with cardiovascular disease as well as SLE. Antibody arrays were performed on serum and urine from lupus patients and matched controls using a cross-sectional study design. From the initial array-based screening data of 15 adipokines, adiponectin, leptin and resistin were selected for validation by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Correlations were determined between adipokine expression levels and measures of disease activity or lupus nephritis. The expression of adiponectin and resistin was increased in both sera and urine from LN patients, while leptin was increased in LN patient sera, compared to matched controls. Serum resistin, but not urine resistin, was correlated with measures of renal dysfunction in LN. Serum resistin expression may be useful as a marker of renal dysfunction in patients with LN, although longitudinal studies are warranted. Further studies are necessary to determine if resistin has functional consequences in LN.

Abstract
Both immune and non-immune mechanisms are involved in muscle damage and dysfunction occurring in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). Crosstalk among inflammatory cells, muscle and endothelial cells is essential in the pathogenesis of IIMs. Resistin, originally described as an adipokine linking obesity and insulin resistance in rodents, has been shown a pro-inflammatory molecule in humans. Besides its direct effect on production of several inflammatory mediators, resistin influences chemotaxis, migration, proliferation, cell survival, endothelial dysfunction and metabolism--all aspects implicated in the pathogenesis of IIMs. Up-regulation of resistin in muscle tissue and elevated serum resistin levels have been recently demonstrated in patients with IIMs. In addition, serum levels of resistin reflected global disease activity, including extramuscular organ involvement, in patients with this disease. However, there are currently not sufficient data to distinguish the features of resistin that cause injury of muscle tissue from those that promote muscle regeneration and repair. The aim of this review is therefore to summarize current knowledge about potential implication of resistin in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Resistin increases during several inflammatory diseases and after intracerebral bleeding or head trauma. Resistin activates the endothelium and may initiate an inflammatory response. No data are available on resistin in brain dead donors (DBD) that regularly manifest a pronounced inflammatory state. METHODS We analyzed plasma resistin in 63 DBDs and correlated results with donor variables and the postoperative course following kidney transplantation using organs from these donors. Endocan and monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 were also studied. Twenty-six live kidney donors (LD) and the corresponding kidney transplantations were used as controls. RESULTS DBDs had higher resistin (median/range 30.75 ng/ml, 5.41-173.6) than LD (7.71 ng/ml, 2.41-15.74, p < 0.0001). Resistin in DBD correlated with delayed graft function (DGF) in the kidney recipients (r = 0.321, p < 0.01); receiver operating characteristic curve revealed an area under the curve of 0.765 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.648-0.881, p < 0.01) and a cut-off value for resistin of 25 ng/ml; MCP-1 and endocan were higher in DBDs (p < 0.0001) but did not correlate with DGF or acute rejection. No relationship was found between the studied molecules and the postoperative course of LD kidney transplants. CONCLUSIONS High resistin levels in the DBD before organ retrieval are associated with DGF after kidney transplantation. The resistin increase seems related to the inflammatory state after brain death but not to the cause of death.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) tends to be high among rheumatic patients, and cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in these conditions. We aimed to determine the prevalence of MetS in patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA) and its association with risk factors and adipokine and cytokine levels. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in 45 consecutive women with TA and 47 healthy controls matched by age and body mass index. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS (International Diabetes Federation/American Heart Association criteria) was higher in TA compared to controls (33.34 vs 8.51%, p = 0.003). Patients with TA had a higher frequency of hypertension (p < 0.001) and dyslipidemia (p = 0.001) and higher levels of insulin (p = 0.021), homeostasis model assessment index (p = 0.024), apolipoprotein E (p = 0.029), resistin (p = 0.018), and C-reactive protein (CRP, p < 0.001) compared to healthy subjects, with similar levels of adiponectin and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1; p > 0.05). Further analysis of patients with TA with and without MetS revealed a higher frequency of overweight/obesity (66.66 vs 26.66%, p = 0.022), higher Framingham score ≥ 1 (p = 0.032), and lower adiponectin levels (20.37 ± 21.16 vs 38.64 ± 22.62 μg/ml, p = 0.022) in the patients with MetS. No differences were found regarding disease duration, activity, glucocorticoid use, resistin, and PAI-1 levels in the 2 groups of patients with TA (p > 0.05). Patients with and without MetS showed no differences in cytokine levels [interleukin 12 (IL-12, IL-1a, IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α]. IL-6 had a positive Pearson correlation with CRP only in TA patients with MetS (r = 0.57; p = 0.050). CONCLUSION A high prevalence of MetS was observed in patients with TA and this comorbidity seems to identify a subgroup of overweight/obese patients with high cardiovascular risk without a significant association with disease status. Further longitudinal studies are necessary to observe the effects of controlling this modifiable risk factor in the quality of life and survival of patients with TA.

Abstract
Adipose tissue is still regarded as a principle site for lipid storage and mobilizing tissue with an important role in the control of energy homeostasis. Additionally, adipose tissue-secreted hormones such as leptin, visfatin, resistin, apelin, omentin, sex steroids, and various growth factors are now regarded as a functional part of the endocrine system. These hormones also play an important role in the immune system. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have suggested the complex role of adipocyte-derived hormones in immune system and inflammation. Adipokines mediate beneficial and detrimental effects in immunity and inflammation. Many of these adipocytokines have a physiological role in metabolism. The uncontrolled secretions of several adipocytokines were associated with the stimulation of inflammatory processes leading to metabolic disorders including obesity, atherosclerosis, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Obesity leads to the dysfunction of adipocytes andcorrelated with the imbalance of adipokines levels. In obese and diabetic conditions, leptin deficiency inhibited the Jak/Stat3/PI3K and insulin pathways. In this review, ample evidence exists to support the recognition of the adipocyte's role in various tissues and pathologies. New integral insights may add dimensions to translate any potential agents into the future clinical armamentarium of chronic endocrine metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Functional balance of both adipocytes and immune cells is important to exert their effects on endocrine metabolic disorders; furthermore, adipose tissue should be renamed not only as a functional part of the endocrine system but also as a new part of the immune system.

Abstract
In this study, the levels of bone turnover markers (BTMs) and bone mineral density (BMD) were studied in relation to body mass and several inflammatory markers, in postmenopausal patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Fifty-nine postmenopausal women with active RA (lean, overweight, obese) were studied. The femoral BMD and serum levels of BTMs: osteocalcin (OC) and collagen type I cross-linked C-telopeptide fragments (CTX), and osteopontin (OPN), resistin, high sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in these patients were measured. It has been noticed that obese women had significantly higher total femoral BMD and total T-score compared to the lean subjects (p ≤ 0.01). The significant associations of BMD measures and CTX levels with body mass parameters (p ≤ 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively) were found. Values of neck BMD adjusted for BMI were inversely associated with concentrations of TNF-α (p < 0.05). Osteocalcin levels inversely correlated with resistin (p ≤ 0.01) and CTX levels positively correlated with OPN (p ≤ 0.01). There were found no associations between BTMs and BMD with other inflammatory indices. Inverse correlations between OPN levels and body mass (p < 0.05), waist circumference (p < 0.05), and duration of postmenopausal period (p ≤ 0.01) were observed. Findings of the present study suggest that body mass and inflammatory markers, most of all OPN, resistin and TNF-α, play an important role in bone metabolism in postmenopausal women with active RA.

Abstract
Adipocytokines, hormones secreted from adipose tissue, have been shown to be associated with many cancers such as breast, prostate and colorectal cancer. Recent studies have indicated that resistin and visfatin, two of these adipokines have high level plasma concentrations in colorectal cancer patients and may be promising biomarkers for colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to identify whether the colorectal cancer cell line, HCT-116, itself is the source of these two adipokines secretion. Resistin and visfatin expression were investigated in HCT-116 by RT - PCR at mRNA level and confirmed by ELISA at protein level. Visfatin showed a high expression at both mRNA and protein levels in HCT-116. Conversely, resistin was not expressed in either cell lysate or supernatant. These results showed that HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells secrete and express visfatin endogenously. However, they are not the main source of resistin and the high level of resistin in colorectal cancer may be due to monocytes and other inflammatory cells which increase in proinflammation status of cancer. Taken together, visfatin may act on colorectal cancer cell in an autocrine manner while resistin may act in a paracrine manner.

Abstract
Patients with rheumatic diseases have an increased risk of mortality by cardiovascular events. In fact, several rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and ankylosing spondylitis are associated with a higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Although traditional cardiovascular risk factors have been involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases in rheumatic patients, these alterations do not completely explain the enhanced cardiovascular risk in this population. Obesity and its pathologic alteration of fat mass and dysfunction, due to an altered pattern of secretion of proinflammatory adipokines, could be one of the links between cardiovascular and rheumatic diseases. Indeed, the incidence of CVDs is augmented in obese individuals with rheumatic disorders. Thus, in this paper we explore in detail the relationships among adipokines, rheumatic diseases, and cardiovascular complications by giving to the reader a holistic vision and several suggestions for future perspectives and potential clinical implications.

Abstract
AIM Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic fibrotic collagen tissue disease. Leptin's role in regulating immune and inflammatory response has become increasingly evident. Resistin has pro-inflammatory properties and also is associated with inflammatory markers in some rheumatologic diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine serum leptin, resistin and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in SSc patients and evaluate their association with other frequently used laboratory and clinic findings. METHOD Sixteen patients were compared with 30 healthy women of similar age and body mass index. Serum leptin, resistin and TNF-α levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and results were assessed by Mann-Whitney U -test and Spearman's correlation test. RESULTS Leptin levels were significantly increased in the SSc group compared to controls (7789.43 ± 1180.72 pg/mL, 1790.55 ± 333.68 pg/mL, P < 0.0001). TNF-α was significantly elevated in patients and it was also positively correlated with leptin (25.30 ± 2.16 pg/mL, 20.95 ± 0.30 pg/mL, P = 0.001), (P = 0.002, r = 0.523). There was no association between leptin, resistin, TNF-α levels and skin score, activity score and disease duration in the SSc patients (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Leptin, resistin and TNF-α levels were found to be higher in SSc in contrast to the control group. These adipokines may have differentiating roles in the pathogenesis of SSc. In order to verify these findings, further clinical studies are needed with larger patient groups.

Abstract
Objective To discuss the relationship between adipokines and connective tissue diseases, by putting special emphasis on the potential role of leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and other adipose tissue products in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus and on possible application of adipokine-targeted therapy in the treatment of these disorders with emphasis on the recent findings. Methods PubMed literature search complemented by review of bibliographies listed in identified articles. Results Most of the data presented by different research groups showed changed levels of leptin, adiponectin, and resistin and occasionally also other adpokines in rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The relationship between the remaining connective tissue diseases and adipokines is less documented. Conclusions Plasma levels of adipokines might tell us too little about their role in connective tissue disorders, whereas adipokine effects on synovial tissues might differ from their known metabolic or cardiovascular effects, which implies that some re-appraisal of adipokines role may need to take place. It still remains obscure whether the observed disturbances in various adipokine systems in subjects with connective tissue diseases contribute to their development or only reflect the presence or activity of inflammatory process, which itself is induced by other pro-inflammatory factors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the serum levels and local expression of resistin in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies to controls, and to determine the relationship between resistin levels, inflammation and disease activity. METHODS Serum resistin levels were determined in 42 patients with inflammatory myopathies and 27 healthy controls. The association among resistin levels, inflammation, global disease activity and muscle strength was examined. The expression of resistin in muscle tissues from patients with inflammatory myopathies and healthy controls was evaluated. Gene expression and protein release from resistin-stimulated muscle and mononuclear cells were assessed. RESULTS In patients with inflammatory myopathies, the serum levels of resistin were significantly higher than those observed in controls (8.53 ± 6.84 vs. 4.54 ± 1.08 ng/ml, P < 0.0001) and correlated with C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (r = 0.328, P = 0.044) and myositis disease activity assessment visual analogue scales (MYOACT) (r = 0.382, P = 0.026). Stronger association was observed between the levels of serum resistin and CRP levels (r = 0.717, P = 0.037) as well as MYOACT (r = 0.798, P = 0.007), and there was a trend towards correlation between serum resistin and myoglobin levels (r = 0.650, P = 0.067) in anti-Jo-1 positive patients. Furthermore, in patients with dermatomyositis, serum resistin levels significantly correlated with MYOACT (r = 0.667, P = 0.001), creatine kinase (r = 0.739, P = 0.001) and myoglobin levels (r = 0.791, P = 0.0003) and showed a trend towards correlation with CRP levels (r = 0.447, P = 0.067). Resistin expression in muscle tissue was significantly higher in patients with inflammatory myopathies compared to controls, and resistin induced the expression of interleukins (IL)-1β and IL-6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 in mononuclear cells but not in myocytes. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study indicate that higher levels of serum resistin are associated with inflammation, higher global disease activity index and muscle injury in patients with myositis-specific anti-Jo-1 antibody and patients with dermatomyositis. Furthermore, up-regulation of resistin in muscle tissue and resistin-induced synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines in mononuclear cells suggest a potential role for resistin in the pathogenesis of inflammatory myopathies.

Abstract
Introduction. Experiments on genetically modified animals have discovered a complex cross-regulation between adipokines (leptin, adiponectin) and osteocalcin. The relationships between these molecules in human osteoporosis are still unclear. We evaluated the hypothesis of a bidirectional link between adipokines and osteocalcin. Materials and Methods. In a cross-sectional study of 294 older patients with osteoporotic hip fracture, we estimated serum concentrations of leptin, adiponectin, resistin, osteocalcin, parameters of mineral metabolism, and renal function. Results. After adjustment for multiple potential confounders, serum osteocalcin concentration was inversely associated with resistin and positively with leptin, leptin/resistin ratio, and adiponectin/resistin ratio. In multivariate regression models, osteocalcin was an independent predictor of serum leptin, resistin, leptin/resistin, and adiponectin/resistin ratios. Conclusions. Our data support the bidirectional regulation between osteocalcin and adipokines, but contrary to the genetically modified animal models, in older subjects with osteoporotic hip fracture, serum osteocalcin is positively associated with leptin and inversely with resistin.

Abstract
Resistin is a cysteine-rich protein, which is abundantly expressed at the site of inflammation, and acts as a regulator of the NF-kB-dependent cytokine cascade. The aim of this study was to evaluate resistin levels in relation to inflammatory mediators, disease phenotype and autoantibody status in a spectrum of pathological conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. Resistin levels were measured with an ELISA in sera originated from 227 patients and 40 healthy controls (HC). Fifty patients diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), 53 ulcerative colitis (UC), 51 Crohn's disease (CD), 46 autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and 27 primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) were included. The sera were analysed with respect to biochemical parameters of systemic inflammation and liver function and to the presence of antibodies to nuclear antigens (ANA), mitochondria (AMA) and smooth muscle (SMA). Compared with HC, resistin levels were raised in AIH (P = 0.017) and PSC (P = 0.03); compared with NAFLD, levels were elevated in CD (P = 0.041), AIH (P < 0.001) and PSC (P < 0.001). Patients with elevated levels of resistin were more often treated with corticosteroids, but no difference was found between active disease and clinical remission. Resistin levels were significantly higher in ANA-positive individuals compared with ANA-negative (P = 0.025). Resistin levels were directly correlated with IL-6 (r = 0.30, P = 0.02) and IL-8 (r = 0.51, P < 0.001). Elevated levels of resistin were prominent in patients with hepatobiliary inflammation and were associated with breach of self-tolerance, i.e. ANA positivity. Thus, we propose that resistin may be an important marker of disease severity in autoantibody-mediated gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
The cloning of leptin in 1994 by Zhang et al. introduced a novel concept about white adipose tissue (WAT) as a very dynamic organ that releases a plethora of immune and inflammatory mediators, such as adipokines and cytokines, which are involved in multiple diseases. Actually, adipokines exert potent modulatory actions on target tissues involved in rheumatic diseases including cartilage, synovial, bone and immune cells. The goal of this paper is to elucidate the recent findings concerning the involvement of adipokines in rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA), and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

OBJECTIVE To evaluate levels of resistin in female subjects with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) compared to age and race-matched controls and to determine the relationship between resistin and systemic inflammation, disease measures, and coronary artery calcification (CAC). METHODS Resistin levels were measured on stored samples from 159 women with SLE and 70 controls as an extension of a previous cross-sectional study. Spearman correlations and multivariable regressions were used to examine whether resistin levels were associated with SLE, disease-specific and inflammatory markers, insulin resistance, and CAC. RESULTS In a multivariable linear regression model, a diagnosis of SLE was significantly associated with higher resistin levels independent of age, race, renal function, body mass index (BMI), high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP), hypertension, diabetes, and steroid use. In SLE, resistin levels correlated positively with Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics Damage Index, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), hsCRP, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, homocysteine, and disease duration (all p < 0.03). Resistin level did not correlate with markers of insulin resistance or body adiposity, including homeostatic model assessment or BMI. Resistin levels were significantly elevated in SLE cases with CAC compared to cases without CAC (16.58 vs 13.10 ng/ml, respectively; p = 0.04). In multivariate logistic regression, the association was not present after adjustment for age, race, and GFR. CONCLUSION SLE was independently associated with higher resistin levels. Among subjects with SLE, higher resistin level correlated positively with renal dysfunction, inflammatory markers, and disease damage but not with insulin resistance or BMI. SLE cases with CAC had higher resistin levels than cases without CAC; however, this relationship was dependent on other established risk factors.

Abstract
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease which predominantly affects certain ethnic groups mainly Sephardic Jews, Turks, Arabs, and Armenians. Differential diagnosis of an attack of FMF with appendicitis could be difficult in patients presenting with acute abdomen. Circulating levels of resistin and visfatin have been shown to increase in several inflammatory conditions. In this study we aimed to investigate the role of resistin and visfatin in diseases activity by monitoring these adipokines' levels in patients with FMF (attacks and attack-free period) and acute appendicitis. The study involves four groups: group 1-31 FMF patients at attack (M/F, 14/17), group 2-27 FMF patients at attack-free period (M/F, 9/18), group 3-29 acute appendicitis patients (M/F, 16/13), and group 4-20 healthy controls (M/F, 10/10). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, white blood cell count, fibrinogen, resistin, visfatin, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, TNF-α, and IFN-γ were evaluated concurrently. Resistin level could be a useful test in diagnosis of FMF patients in attacks period but not in acute appendicitis as differential diagnosis. Measuring visfatin levels would not give additional information neither for attacks and attack-free period nor FMF attack and appendicitis.

Abstract
Our study was aimed to analyze clinical manifestations, autoantibodies and other serological abnormalities in South Indian patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Clinical history and findings on systemic examination were noted. Antinuclear antibodies (ANA), antibodies to double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) were detected by immunofluorescence and ANA profile by Immunoblotting. Arthritis was most common followed by fever and skin rash. Clinical manifestations vary according to geographical location of the patient. ANA was positive in 64.28% and anti-dsDNA in 89.36% of patients. All patients with lupus nephritis were positive for dsDNA. Detection of antibodies to dsDNA, RNP and anti-Smith (Sm) are of diagnostic and prognostic importance.

Abstract
Biomarkers have the potential to be useful tools for noninvasively evaluating and managing patients with lupus nephritis. Many candidate biomarkers have been identified, but they require validation in larger cohorts. It is likely that combinations or biomarker profiles, rather than individual markers, will emerge to help better predict the severity of inflammation, the extent of fibrosis, degree of drug responsiveness, and other variables. This approach has the potential to reduce the use of the renal biopsy, improve therapeutic efficacy, and limit toxicity. We predict algorithms based on genotype and biomarkers combined with clinical presentation will emerge to help guide physicians in management. Assays that show the most potential include serum erythrocyte bound complement C4d, interleukin 17, interleukin 23, interferon score/chemokine score ratio, and anti-C1q antibodies. Such urinary biomarkers as fractional excretion of endothelial-1, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, and TWEAK (tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis) may also be useful but require validations.

Abstract
Resistin was originally described as an adipocyte-secreted peptide that induced insulin resistance in rodents. Increasing evidence indicates its important regulatory roles in various biological processes, including several inflammatory diseases. Further studies have shown that resistin in humans, in contrast to its production by adipocytes in mice, is synthesized predominantly by mononuclear cells both within and outside adipose tissue. Possible roles for resistin in obesity-related subclinical inflammation, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, rheumatic diseases, malignant tumors, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic kidney disease have already been demonstrated. In addition, resistin can modulate several molecular pathways involved in metabolic, inflammatory, and autoimmune diseases. In this review, current knowledge about the functions and pathophysiological implications of resistin in different human pathologies is summarized, although there is a significant lack of firm evidence regarding the specific role resistin plays in the "orchestra" of the numerous mediators of inflammation.
